- 2:39this show off.
- 2:39All right.
- 2:40So welcome to another of the ever popular,
- 2:43powerful episode of the Inspirations for Your Life,
- 2:46the Daily Motivational Show.
- 2:48Now, I show here content and give you
- 2:52insights to help you unlock your potential and
- 2:55take bold, meaningful action every single day, not
- 3:00just once, but every single day.
- 3:02Hey, by the way, I'm John C.
- 3:04Morley, serial entrepreneur.
- 3:05I'm an engineer.
- 3:06I'm a marketing specialist.
- 3:08I'm a video producer, a podcast host, coach,
- 3:12graduate student and yes, guys, a passionate, lifelong
- 3:16learner.
- 3:17This show is designed to meet you where
- 3:19you are and move you forward in your
- 3:22life one insight at a time.
- 3:25And the master topic in this series for
- 3:30is spotting real life signs.
- 3:33That's what the whole week is about.
- 3:35And this particular episode five or show 52
- 3:42segment, walking forward with limited info.
- 3:47In this episode, I'm going to guide you
- 3:51through what it really means to keep moving
- 3:54even when the path is a little foggy.
- 3:58The answers aren't clear and certainty is nowhere
- 4:02to be found.
- 4:03So you can't just turn around.
- 4:05You have to figure out what your game
- 4:06plan is going to be.
- 4:07And I think that's something that a lot
- 4:08of people don't realize that their game plan
- 4:11is definitely important in their lives.
- 4:15So I want to share this with you
- 4:17because I think it's very important that you
- 4:19understand what's going on.
- 4:22And so what I want to tell you
- 4:24guys is number one, no spoiler alerts in
- 4:28life.
- 4:28Focus on the next right step.
- 4:31Okay.
- 4:32I know a lot of times people say,
- 4:33oh, gee, you know, I know that I've
- 4:35been there and I've done it.
- 4:36That's great.
- 4:37Okay.
- 4:37But you can use that information they give
- 4:40you as a springboard, not as something to,
- 4:44let's say, deter you from trying to achieve
- 4:49your goals and aspirations.
- 4:51A lot of times people say, you know,
- 4:53it's really simple.
- 4:54It's really easy.
- 4:55But then they give up.
- 4:59And, you know, you haven't quit unless you've
- 5:03completely stopped.
- 5:04It's one thing to take a break, but
- 5:07it's another to completely give up and to
- 5:09do nothing.
- 5:11And I've said that you have to do
- 5:12consistent action every single day.
- 5:14The same amount of action.
- 5:15No less, no more.
- 5:17All right.
- 5:17That's an important piece, guys.
- 5:20Number two, you don't need full certainty to
- 5:23move.
- 5:24Clarity comes after action.
- 5:27It sure does.
- 5:28Clarity comes after action.
- 5:30So, when you're able to, let's say, dive
- 5:35into something, all right, and you're able to
- 5:39execute, whether it's a project, whether it's a
- 5:42task, that clarity actually kicks in when you
- 5:47start to take some action.
- 5:48Now, you might need to refine the action.
- 5:50I'm not saying the action's going to be
- 5:51perfect, but you at least know that you
- 5:54can move from there.
- 5:56Number three, guys, control feels safe.
- 6:00A real power is in how you think
- 6:02and you respond.
- 6:05When life shakes, trust your ability to adapt
- 6:09and adjust.
- 6:12Number five, waiting for guarantees keeps you frozen
- 6:16where you are.
- 6:18And if you are going to wait and
- 6:24you're never going to see changes in your
- 6:25life, it's going to demotivate you and you're
- 6:28going to actually, well, either stay stagnant or
- 6:33you're going to backpedal.
- 6:34So, it's important that we realize that sometimes
- 6:37what we see in front of us, that's
- 6:40not the final landing point.
- 6:42That's just a work in progress and we
- 6:45have to be kind to ourself about that.
- 6:48Number six, guys, progress often feels like confusion
- 6:53and doubt from the inside.
- 6:57Number seven, you can be unsure and still
- 7:00take bold, imperfect steps.
- 7:04Number eight, the process is working even when
- 7:08you can't post the results yet.
- 7:11And I think that causes some people to
- 7:14be a little bit dismayed.
- 7:16Like, you know, how do I get somewhere
- 7:18if I can't get the results?
- 7:20You'll get a firm understanding of where you're
- 7:22going.
- 7:23And then you can obviously take your temperature
- 7:26along the way.
- 7:28It may not be formal, but it will
- 7:30at least give you enough of an insight
- 7:33as to where you should be on your
- 7:36roadmap to success.
- 7:38Number nine, you're not lost.
- 7:42You're simply between chapters of your story.
- 7:45And I think when we think about this,
- 7:49so many people say to me, John, I
- 7:51don't know what to do.
- 7:51I don't know where to go.
- 7:54We've all been there, right?
- 7:55We've all had issues where we just don't
- 7:57know how to start the first chapter of
- 7:58our book, or we don't know what to
- 8:01do in our life.
- 8:03Okay.
- 8:05Everyone has that similar story.
- 8:07But that doesn't mean you should be giving
- 8:08up.
- 8:09It doesn't mean that you should stop what
- 8:11you're doing.
- 8:11Okay, that's really, really important.
- 8:16Number 10, trust isn't blind.
- 8:20It's informed risk in a direction that fits
- 8:23your values.
- 8:27I think that's one that a lot of
- 8:28people, I think a lot of people don't
- 8:30understand that very well.
- 8:32Number 11, sometimes the only proof of progress
- 8:36is that you didn't quit.
- 8:39They might not have got to your goal
- 8:41yet, you might have not got to the
- 8:42place where you want to go and celebrate
- 8:44everything.
- 8:45That's okay.
- 8:47What we do need to do is understand
- 8:49where you're at, and where you're going.
- 8:54Number 12, you don't have to love every
- 8:58moment.
- 8:59You just have to keep going.
- 9:03Number 13, trusting yourself only when it's easy.
- 9:09Comfort, not real faith.
- 9:14I think sometimes people, you know, they don't
- 9:19do something because of something they've seen in
- 9:23the world or something they felt in the
- 9:24world.
- 9:25And although this can be very positive to
- 9:27help push you toward a certain direction, it
- 9:30also can be very negative because it can
- 9:32detract you from getting to your actual goal.
- 9:36That's a big problem, right?
- 9:38A really, really big problem.
- 9:40So number 14, ask what has already worked
- 9:46out better than you expected.
- 9:49Sometimes we don't take the time to figure
- 9:53out why something is working.
- 9:57And I think that's an important thing that
- 9:59we need to all understand is that we
- 10:01have to figure out what's working, then we
- 10:03have to kind of clone that so that
- 10:05we can build a process that's similar to
- 10:07that and give us great results, right?
- 10:12That's really important to embrace and to understand.
- 10:18Number 15, guys, I want you to remember
- 10:20times you thought it was over and it
- 10:23became a turning point.
- 10:26Ever had those moments?
- 10:27Yeah, we've all had them.
- 10:29Maybe one of your turning points were you
- 10:32being in school.
- 10:33And maybe, I don't know, maybe the first
- 10:36time you were in the class, it's like
- 10:37it didn't go well.
- 10:39But then when you got that grade that
- 10:42you weren't, let's say, very keen with, you
- 10:45didn't fight about it.
- 10:46You just said, look, I've got to do
- 10:48better.
- 10:48I've got to do what I need to
- 10:50do.
- 10:50I got this grade because of me.
- 10:53Now you might say, gee, it was the
- 10:54teacher, it was the professor.
- 10:55And we all can say those things.
- 10:57But at the end of the day, our
- 10:59learning is really based on us.
- 11:03So if we can't take accountability for who
- 11:05we are and what we're learning, then we
- 11:08have no right to blame a professor.
- 11:09I mean, yes, they would want to help
- 11:11us to learn, but we can't make them
- 11:15100% accountable.
- 11:17They should be accountable.
- 11:18But just because they don't put in what
- 11:21we need doesn't mean that we can blame
- 11:25it all on the professor or blame any
- 11:27of it on the professor.
- 11:29If we want to learn, we pay money
- 11:32to go to college.
- 11:33And that money we pay allows us to
- 11:37get an education.
- 11:38But sometimes, especially as a graduate student, I
- 11:40find that I've got to do a lot
- 11:42of my own education.
- 11:43I've got to teach myself stuff.
- 11:45Either class moves very quickly, or maybe they
- 11:48don't cover a point as in depth as
- 11:51I would like it to be.
- 11:52You know, sometimes I find myself studying more
- 11:55about a topic than we're actually covering a
- 11:57class.
- 11:58And that gets me excited about it.
- 12:00And then I learn not only the point
- 12:01that I need to learn for class, but
- 12:02I also learn other points that help me
- 12:05really want to dive into it.
- 12:08So what are the turning points you had
- 12:11in your life?
- 12:12Maybe it was going on a date.
- 12:15And maybe that date didn't go so well,
- 12:17right?
- 12:18So it doesn't mean you don't ever date
- 12:19again.
- 12:21It means that you have to embrace the
- 12:24concept of what do I do now?
- 12:26What do I do now?
- 12:28Because this didn't work out.
- 12:30Right?
- 12:31I don't play a pity party.
- 12:33I don't say, Oh, my gosh, I date
- 12:35this person, they're gonna date again.
- 12:36This didn't work out.
- 12:37No, you don't do that.
- 12:39And I know how that's easy to do,
- 12:42because you're probably saying, what's the easiest thing
- 12:44to do?
- 12:44And I could just give up.
- 12:46You could.
- 12:48I don't want you to give up.
- 12:49I don't think you want yourself to give
- 12:50up either.
- 12:52So again, we're talking about walking forward with
- 12:55limited information today.
- 12:58And maybe you're asking somebody out and maybe
- 13:01you don't have enough information about that person.
- 13:04So you're out of the limb.
- 13:06Maybe they tell you yes, but then for
- 13:09some reason, down the road, they say, Oh,
- 13:13I'm busy.
- 13:15We've all had that happen before.
- 13:17Does that mean anything about you?
- 13:19No, it might mean something about the person.
- 13:21It might mean that they're maybe too immature,
- 13:25or it might mean that they're not ready
- 13:26to go on a date.
- 13:27That's what it could mean.
- 13:29Right?
- 13:30Or it might mean something like that they've
- 13:33had bad experiences, and they just don't want
- 13:36to try again.
- 13:38So another thing about a turning point, it
- 13:41could be in relationships, it could be in
- 13:43fitness, okay.
- 13:47It could be in education, it could be
- 13:50in a lot of different things.
- 13:54Okay, a lot of different things.
- 13:56And this is something that's very, very important
- 13:58to all of us.
- 14:00Okay.
- 14:01We've got to make sure that we know
- 14:05that turning points are those magical times, when
- 14:13we get that aha moment.
- 14:14Oh, yeah.
- 14:16Okay.
- 14:16Now I know what I've got to do.
- 14:18Right?
- 14:19Hopefully that makes some sense to you guys.
- 14:21Right?
- 14:23Number 16.
- 14:25You're allowed to pause guys, and reset without
- 14:30calling it a failure.
- 14:31That's right, guys.
- 14:32So let's say that you're working on something,
- 14:36okay, it could be a small project, whatever
- 14:37it was, maybe even maybe it was even
- 14:39dating.
- 14:39And it was a complete abomination.
- 14:42Right?
- 14:42You can completely reset, okay, and start again.
- 14:46And it's not a failure.
- 14:48So you took the data that you learned
- 14:50from that situation.
- 14:51And now you're able to impose that on
- 14:54your new situation, so that you can use
- 14:57that information, that intelligence, if you will, call
- 15:00it market intelligence, and then be able to
- 15:02now be better.
- 15:04Okay, without calling it a failure.
- 15:06Remember, failure is not failure, as long as
- 15:10you haven't quit.
- 15:12If you need to reset, if you need
- 15:13to take a break, that is not failure,
- 15:15guys.
- 15:16Failure is when you say, Okay, I can't,
- 15:18I can't, I can't, I can't.
- 15:19And I'm not doing this.
- 15:20And, and I've had people do this.
- 15:23I've known people very close to me that
- 15:26have said, you know, I can't, I can't
- 15:28do this.
- 15:28I can't lift this, I can't do that.
- 15:30And I understand that maybe there's reasons, maybe
- 15:34it's pain or discomfort.
- 15:36But every time they say that can't, it's
- 15:39like they're putting a nail, you know, in
- 15:44a in a board against hitting them, like,
- 15:46you know, against the wall, you know, kind
- 15:48of like hold them against the wall with
- 15:50that nail.
- 15:51And I feel that sometimes, when somebody can
- 15:57just keep pushing the button, you know, like,
- 15:59Oh, I can't, I can't, I can't, I
- 16:01can't, I can't.
- 16:02First thing I hear when I hear the
- 16:04word I can't, is I know the whole
- 16:07body has already shut down.
- 16:10Okay?
- 16:11The body has already shut down.
- 16:13And it's not always easy to motivate these
- 16:16people because they've got one track in their
- 16:19mind.
- 16:19If I move, I'm going to be in
- 16:21pain or I'm going to be in discomfort.
- 16:24I've said to you before, that success does
- 16:27not lie where comfort lives.
- 16:31Success begins where discomfort starts.
- 16:36And as we get uncomfortable, just like if
- 16:39you were used to writing with your right
- 16:40hand, and now you have to do something
- 16:42with your left hand.
- 16:43Well, we call it ambidextrous if you can
- 16:45actually do that.
- 16:46But the thing is, if you learn how
- 16:49to write with the other hand, maybe not
- 16:52as well, but you can kind of get
- 16:54used to, it's a little funny, but you
- 16:55can do it, right?
- 16:56And that's discomforting.
- 16:59But it also could mean that you could
- 17:00hit a lot of points for success.
- 17:04Number 17, guys, let this season be about
- 17:07learning, not just winning.
- 17:10All right.
- 17:11So as tonight is Christmas Eve, and tomorrow's
- 17:14Christmas Day, and some of you I know
- 17:17a few weeks ago celebrate Hanukkah and some
- 17:19other things like Kwanzaa, etc.
- 17:23I think we oftentimes get stressed about our
- 17:30environment, especially when the environment is centered around
- 17:35a holiday, right?
- 17:38Maybe you're getting ready to go on vacation
- 17:40like I did.
- 17:41I had a lot of things to do
- 17:42within the last, let's say, let's call it
- 17:46the last 72 to 48 hours before I
- 17:50depart.
- 17:52And I think that's the thing.
- 17:57We have to sometimes realize that we don't
- 18:00give ourselves enough time to get things done.
- 18:05Now, walking forward with limited information, that happens
- 18:08once or but once we've known how maybe
- 18:11pushing ourselves too much, maybe harms us in
- 18:16some way, like it depletes our energy, or
- 18:20it doesn't make us feel well.
- 18:23I think that's a very important thing that
- 18:25I want to bring across to all of
- 18:26you this evening, is that limited information is
- 18:31not something that stays limited.
- 18:33It might be limited the first time, but
- 18:35the next time around, it may not be
- 18:37so limited.
- 18:38You might have data say, you know what,
- 18:40now I know what I could do differently.
- 18:42Now I know how I could ask him
- 18:43out, or I can ask her out a
- 18:44different way.
- 18:45Now I know how I am not going
- 18:47to get shut down, right?
- 18:49Now I know that the conversation's got to
- 18:51be about them, not about me.
- 18:54As Dale Carnegie said, I've got a stride
- 18:56to become genuinely interested in the other person.
- 18:58But how many of you guys out there
- 19:00actually do that?
- 19:01How many of you actually care about the
- 19:03other person?
- 19:04You might say you do, okay, and we
- 19:06all could do this, but the matter of
- 19:09the point is that if what you're doing
- 19:13is a motive outside of something that's gonna
- 19:16benefit the greater good of that person, or
- 19:18the greater good of all concerned, you don't
- 19:20really give jack about that person.
- 19:23And I want you to really ponder this,
- 19:28because this is what's gonna affect you going
- 19:31forward in success.
- 19:32Financially, relationships, education, fitness, health, right?
- 19:40All right, let's move on to the next
- 19:41point.
- 19:42Number 18, guys.
- 19:44You don't need the whole plan.
- 19:47Just one good aligned choice today.
- 19:53So maybe you're trying to build a birdhouse.
- 19:57You don't need the whole plan.
- 20:00Maybe you just need to know you got
- 20:01to start.
- 20:02Maybe you need to know that you're gonna
- 20:03build it out of wood.
- 20:05Maybe you need to know that you're gonna
- 20:07use screws to put it together.
- 20:08You need to know some basic things.
- 20:10Then maybe you'll research how certain birdhouses are
- 20:13made with screws, right?
- 20:16Maybe you're gonna think about, are you gonna
- 20:17paint the birdhouse?
- 20:18Or are you gonna use aluminum siding?
- 20:21I mean, I know that's a little bit
- 20:22much, but maybe you know somebody that has
- 20:24some leftover aluminum siding, and you decide, oh,
- 20:26you know what?
- 20:27I'm gonna use the leftover aluminum siding in
- 20:29my birdhouse.
- 20:31See, that's being resourceful.
- 20:33If we're resourceful when we're in a pinch
- 20:36or when we have a challenge, that's when
- 20:39it gets stressful.
- 20:40But if we can learn to be resourceful
- 20:42before we get squeezed, before we get pinched,
- 20:45before the air gets sucked out of us,
- 20:48that's when we start to become resourceful.
- 20:50That's when we start to build a plane
- 20:52of potentially being successful.
- 20:57Number 19, guys.
- 20:58Trust shows up as small, boring, consistent actions
- 21:04repeatedly.
- 21:06You might say to me, John, what does
- 21:09it mean to show up every day on
- 21:11time?
- 21:12Well, showing up on time, I told you,
- 21:15means you're late.
- 21:16You've always got to be earlier.
- 21:17So if somebody said to you, meet me
- 21:19at 9, well, I'm gonna be there at
- 21:21850, because I was always taught many years
- 21:24ago that if you are on time, you're
- 21:26late.
- 21:27And you might say, John, where did you
- 21:28learn that?
- 21:29Well, it was probably about, I'm gonna say,
- 21:3730 years ago, when my family and I
- 21:40were getting ready to go on a vacation.
- 21:43And well, the car was supposed to come
- 21:46around, I think it was like 630.
- 21:50And so, you know, obviously, we're up early
- 21:53anyway, but it was like, I think it
- 21:55was like 515.
- 22:00And the doorbell rings.
- 22:02And I'm like, who's at the door?
- 22:04It's 515.
- 22:06And sure enough, it was the limo company.
- 22:08And I said to the guy, I said,
- 22:10we're not ready.
- 22:11And I said, we just got up at
- 22:11half.
- 22:12He says, that's okay.
- 22:12He says, I just want to make sure
- 22:13you're all ready.
- 22:14He says, whenever you're ready, I can take
- 22:15the luggage.
- 22:16And I was like, wow.
- 22:18And it was nice being able to not
- 22:21have to worry about the limo guy being
- 22:24on time.
- 22:24How many times have you taken a Lyft
- 22:26or taken an Uber, and they just decided
- 22:28to do whatever the heck they want?
- 22:29Limos are a lot more, let's see, accountable,
- 22:34right?
- 22:35Because you have a relationship with the limo
- 22:37driver.
- 22:38It's not like you're using the same person
- 22:40with Lyft, right?
- 22:42You're using different people all the time.
- 22:43So, they don't really care how they treat
- 22:46you.
- 22:46I mean, I'm just being quite honest.
- 22:47I'm just stating the facts.
- 22:49Number 20, growing roots, not chasing quick fireworks.
- 22:54I know it sounds like we want to
- 22:58chase a firework.
- 22:59I know that sounds really, really cool.
- 23:01But I want to tell you something.
- 23:03That is not what it is about.
- 23:08Nope, nope, nope.
- 23:10It's about growing from the root level.
- 23:13Number 21, the outcome you want may arrive
- 23:17in a form you didn't expect.
- 23:19So, what I want to tell you is,
- 23:21be open to that.
- 23:25It may come in a different packaging, as
- 23:27we've said.
- 23:28And by packaging, I mean the vehicle in
- 23:31which it's delivered.
- 23:32That could be how you learn about something,
- 23:35how the opportunity comes across your lap, or
- 23:37how you get the experience to do what
- 23:40you need, right?
- 23:41It may come in a form you didn't
- 23:43expect.
- 23:44So, if you're not willing to do that,
- 23:46then you're going to obviously block it.
- 23:49Number 22, focus on what you can control.
- 23:52Effort, honesty, and boundaries.
- 23:54Yes.
- 23:56If we focus on what we can control,
- 23:59we'll find that what we can't control, that
- 24:02suddenly just kind of falls into the ditch.
- 24:04And that becomes not as important.
- 24:06We focus on what we can control.
- 24:08It's like we have so much more ability
- 24:11because like, hey, I have all this stuff
- 24:14I can control.
- 24:15Number 23, it's okay if your life doesn't
- 24:19look clean and linear on LinkedIn, all right?
- 24:23And I say that to you.
- 24:26One of the things one of my companies
- 24:27does is actually helps people create very good
- 24:30profiles on LinkedIn.
- 24:32But I think in order to be somebody
- 24:35on LinkedIn, you first have to know what
- 24:38it is you stand for.
- 24:40I remember helping an attorney.
- 24:43I'm going to say it was probably over,
- 24:45I don't know, maybe just right after COVID
- 24:47or something.
- 24:48Or right around that time.
- 24:51Actually, it was right in COVID, right in
- 24:52that time.
- 24:53And we did great work for him.
- 24:56We never got a thank you, okay?
- 24:59We never got a referral anywhere.
- 25:01But he's still using the profile we created
- 25:04him and the branding we created him that
- 25:07has helped him make millions.
- 25:10Unfair?
- 25:11Yes.
- 25:12Lesson learned?
- 25:13Yep, definitely.
- 25:15Number 24, guys, your timeline isn't broken just
- 25:21because it doesn't match theirs.
- 25:24And I think that's something a lot of
- 25:25people don't want to say is that it
- 25:28must be broken because I'm not aligned with
- 25:31you.
- 25:31Number 25, measure progress against your past self,
- 25:35not strangers online or in person.
- 25:37I know so many people that want to
- 25:39compare themselves to other people they don't even
- 25:40know.
- 25:42It's a stranger, it could be a celebrity.
- 25:45And they compare themselves instead of comparing themselves
- 25:50to themselves.
- 25:52Number 26, drop the idea that you're behind.
- 25:55Behind what?
- 25:57And by whose rules?
- 25:58Who said you were behind?
- 26:00Everybody blooms at different times.
- 26:03Number 27, trusting the process includes forgiving earlier
- 26:07versions of you.
- 26:08That's right.
- 26:09You weren't perfect in the past.
- 26:11And you're not going to be perfect in
- 26:12the future.
- 26:13So be kind to yourself.
- 26:16You're doing the best you can.
- 26:19Number 28, changing the plan is adaptation.
- 26:22It's not automatic quitting.
- 26:24And I said there's a difference between quitting
- 26:26and adapting.
- 26:28Adapting means this doesn't work and I need
- 26:31to retool.
- 26:32I need to regroup.
- 26:33I need to go back to the drawing
- 26:34board.
- 26:34That's not quitting.
- 26:36That's still working on this thing.
- 26:38Like I'll give you an example.
- 26:41Many years ago, I was involved in a
- 26:43science competition, done other science competitions, but this
- 26:46was one we did with an egg drop.
- 26:48And I remember the very first time I
- 26:50did this, without the competition, just doing it
- 26:53for practice before we even entered into the
- 26:55competition, the egg broke.
- 26:57The first three or four designs broke.
- 26:59I'm like, oh, really?
- 27:01And we had like a week to bring
- 27:03this to summer camp and to actually do
- 27:04it.
- 27:05And they were going to drop this egg
- 27:07carrier, if you will, off a building.
- 27:10And I was determined.
- 27:11I mean, I just worked at this.
- 27:12I looked at different things.
- 27:13I had to stay within a certain weight
- 27:14class limit.
- 27:17And after doing it for a while, I
- 27:18started making it like a puzzle.
- 27:20Then I started to realize that I got
- 27:24this.
- 27:25You got it too.
- 27:26Just find the missing puzzle link.
- 27:29Number 29, zoom out and ask, will this
- 27:32still matter in five years?
- 27:33If it doesn't, you're probably putting a lot
- 27:35more energy into it than you really need
- 27:37to.
- 27:37Number 30, remember, you've figured things out before.
- 27:40You can figure them out again too.
- 27:42There's no need for you to get all
- 27:44stressed about it.
- 27:45As you walk forward, ladies and gentlemen, with
- 27:47limited information, remember, you're not walking alone.
- 27:50You have your experience, your resilience, your intuition,
- 27:55and you have inspirations for your life to
- 27:58support you every single day.
