- 0:33Speaker 0: The energy that we get from the crowd is so infectious.
- 0:41Speaker 1: My German is a bit better for the podcast.
- 0:45Speaker 1: We still need some time until we can make a podcast in German?
- 1:02Speaker 0: Two
- 1:04Speaker 1: questions, but not too
- 1:07Speaker 0: much.
- 1:09Speaker 0: More than two questions!
- 1:12Speaker 0: Okay, everything's
- 1:15Speaker 1: fine.
- 1:16Speaker 1: Colin trains in
- 1:19Speaker 0: German, it will take longer to speak
- 1:22Speaker 1: German.
- 1:23Speaker 1: so that's why today of course we're making this podcast in English because we want to learn more about you, Colin Let's change to English, so tell us a little bit about your family and their connection with Germany.
- 1:40Speaker 0: So my mom... My mother comes from North, Germany is very north.
- 1:47Speaker 0: They
- 1:47Speaker 1: speak Holstein?
- 1:48Speaker 1: Yeah
- 1:49Speaker 0: And I lived there.
- 1:52Speaker 0: maybe..I've lived here for like five years but you weren't
- 1:56Speaker 1: born in Germany.
- 1:57Speaker 0: It wasn´t born in German.
- 1:57Speaker 0: I was born New York, lived in New York two years when i as baby came here at primary school and lived in Grafenwehr, Vizek.
- 2:09Speaker 0: And a small town is called Kattenbrühen?
- 2:14Speaker 0: Yes so I lived there for five years.
- 2:19Speaker 0: that was all.
- 2:21Speaker 0: my father comes from Texas and i have three brothers.
- 2:26Speaker 0: two were here.
- 2:27Speaker 0: we're born here in germany and can't remember the name of And then I have one little brother.
- 2:35Speaker 0: He was born in Texas, so okay.
- 2:38Speaker 1: So gravenberg and filsack is basically around the corner.
- 2:40Speaker 1: Yeah Which is a crazy coincidence that you ended up here in Byron.
- 2:43Speaker 1: actually right?
- 2:45Speaker 1: Take us a little bit through your childhood.
- 2:47Speaker 1: You mentioned that you spend your first couple of years here in Germany But i think your childhood must've been a little different compared to other kids from the u.s.. Right
- 2:55Speaker 0: yeah army bratso moved round Not as much of some other army kids.
- 3:02Speaker 0: I was fortunate enough that when after Germany we moved to South Korea How
- 3:07Speaker 1: old were you?
- 3:08Speaker 0: Approximately I moved in twenty thirteen, i had a B ten.
- 3:17Speaker 0: So from ten to eighteen I was in south korea so Loved it there.
- 3:24Speaker 0: It was uh great culture A great new experience A lot different From the German Culture where everybody's A lot more private.
- 3:32Speaker 0: There's a lot more privacy in like where you live and it's not really crowded.
- 3:36Speaker 0: So there was huge culture shock because I went from being at a small quiet little German town, You know we have mitzak stunde Everybody has to be quite.
- 3:45Speaker 0: And then you go to South Korea.
- 3:46Speaker 0: were is non-stop noise?
- 3:48Speaker 0: And your just like sitting.
- 3:49Speaker 0: they're just like oh my god.
- 3:50Speaker 1: You work within an army base But sometimes you left it and went on to the South Korean cities?
- 3:56Speaker 0: So my dad, when we moved into South Korea he retired.
- 4:00Speaker 0: We were civilians that lived there.
- 4:01Speaker 0: so we live outside of military base.
- 4:05Speaker 0: We went to school in a military base... We went grocery shopping at a military bases but we lived outside in the south korean community.
- 4:12Speaker 1: Why did they pick South Korea?
- 4:14Speaker 0: I guess this was his best job opening.
- 4:19Speaker 1: But also, did you have the chance to spend some time in
- 4:21Speaker 1: U.S.,
- 4:21Speaker 1: during that stay?
- 4:22Speaker 1: Or did you ever travel home?
- 4:24Speaker 0: No I've been overseas... Non-stop!
- 4:28Speaker 0: Yeah..I've been oversees more of my life than i've been in the states.
- 4:31Speaker 0: so uh.... I actually lived in Germany longer now and I live United States.
- 4:37Speaker 0: Still still try to pick up the language my mom.
- 4:40Speaker 0: She texts me every day and nothing but German.
- 4:42Speaker 0: I Have to use Google translate when i don't understand a big word.
- 4:47Speaker 0: so
- 4:48Speaker 1: But it helps that you know live here actually yeah have To talk A little bit and perhaps You will think during The Day When, you just have to like shop groceries or Talk to people
- 4:57Speaker 0: when i go to the gas station.
- 4:58Speaker 0: It's really fun because the gas Station Attendings they talked to Me a lot So i speak with them in german And its Just Quick way for me to like learn conversation sure
- 5:08Speaker 1: and you don't seem to be afraid of anyone or talking.
- 5:11Speaker 1: I think that's more like a result.
- 5:13Speaker 1: Of your childhood.
- 5:14Speaker 1: did you spend abroad?
- 5:15Speaker 1: Yeah,
- 5:15Speaker 0: yeah Especially being in a lot of different countries with a lot other than languages.
- 5:20Speaker 0: I had friends that were from Columbia where their parents only spoke Spanish and i Had Friends That Were Korean And Their Parents Only Spoke Korean.
- 5:27Speaker 0: so Just Being Confident Enough and Trying To Speak the Language and Understanding how words are spoken, and each language is spoken kind of helps me.
- 5:38Speaker 0: And German it was just always like.
- 5:41Speaker 0: I can't speak all the German words but when i try to like speaking German...I tried not to have an American accent because that's a big thing at least my grandfather used say to me all the time.
- 5:52Speaker 0: he said you sound too american!
- 5:54Speaker 0: You gotta start sounding german.
- 5:55Speaker 0: so
- 5:56Speaker 1: Colin, you have to speak
- 6:14Speaker 0: good German.
- 6:23Speaker 0: like multi-cultural place.
- 6:27Speaker 1: What's the biggest difference being raised in a military family compared to regular US families?
- 6:34Speaker 1: Not sure if you can compare it, but
- 6:36Speaker 0: definitely just how much trust your parents have and where they're living.
- 6:42Speaker 0: when you are overseas or not from an area that has no idea what their dangers are around then They don't know how safe is for them.
- 6:52Speaker 0: I couldn't just like go to my friend's house that lived thirty minutes away because my parents didn't know.
- 6:57Speaker 0: how could he get back home if He couldn't come in contact with me?
- 7:00Speaker 0: and What is it?
- 7:01Speaker 0: Like when he gets into trouble.
- 7:03Speaker 0: Is he gonna be in way more trouble of what?
- 7:05Speaker 0: are the consequences?
- 7:05Speaker 0: looking like Things like that?
- 7:07Speaker 1: yeah, especially when you can't communicate.
- 7:09Speaker 0: Yeah
- 7:09Speaker 1: And you had lost as a ten year old.
- 7:12Speaker 1: That's difficult.
- 7:14Speaker 1: You mentioned your have two siblings
- 7:15Speaker 0: three brothers Three brothers!
- 7:17Speaker 0: Two older brother one younger brother.
- 7:19Speaker 0: My two older brothers Fluent absolutely fluent.
- 7:22Speaker 0: They could.
- 7:23Speaker 0: they've lived in Germany and Thrived, then they can sit there and have a conversation.
- 7:27Speaker 0: I could be lost.
- 7:28Speaker 0: Okay And I had younger brother me and him.
- 7:31Speaker 0: we kind of struggled because it was kind of just as We got as were raised.
- 7:35Speaker 0: It was this like they grew up.
- 7:37Speaker 0: They went to German kindergarten uh?
- 7:39Speaker 0: Then we got to the States and they had us.
- 7:41Speaker 0: you know is kinda Just like the only time he learned German was from my mom.
- 7:44Speaker 0: so I see yeah
- 7:45Speaker 1: Do they also play basketball?
- 7:47Speaker 0: My two older brothers do play baseball.
- 7:49Speaker 0: One played semi-pro, he played in Nortoff and he also played in Rensburg.
- 7:54Speaker 0: so He did a little bit.
- 7:56Speaker 0: And then my brother right above me...he's currently trying to get into pro basketball.
- 8:01Speaker 0: I've been pushing him alot..He was a lot better than me.
- 8:05Speaker 0: So it kind of shocking for me not see him coming to play Pro over
- 8:09Speaker 1: here.
- 8:10Speaker 1: bring them at your level and we will sign him.
- 8:14Speaker 1: Well, it would be great to have a Matka family reunion in the environment!
- 8:20Speaker 1: In Korea you attended like an American high school as you just mentioned?
- 8:24Speaker 1: And then you transferred to Mercesburg and Pennsylvania... The idea behind that was to make yourself visible for the NCAA or...?
- 8:33Speaker 0: When I was in South Korea, nobody from colleges and the states are looking at me.
- 8:38Speaker 0: You know especially not division ones.
- 8:40Speaker 0: so a Small little group called global squad came through with.
- 8:46Speaker 0: they do A lot of recruiting with a lot of army kids still come to Germany.
- 8:50Speaker 0: They'll go to their version Of there big tournament that goes south korea or Japan.
- 8:55Speaker 0: So they kind of helped Me Through The process And mercisburg Was willing To take me In.
- 9:00Speaker 0: it was a boarding school.
- 9:02Speaker 0: I gotta live there, finally see what it was like to be in the States.
- 9:05Speaker 0: Never lived in the states that... It's crazy
- 9:07Speaker 1: for actually an American boy to figure out how to do this when you're only about eighteen!
- 9:11Speaker 0: Yeah, everybody else- I thought nobody is insane over here and everyone shoots everybody else.
- 9:19Speaker 0: so.. Did
- 9:20Speaker 1: he have a reverse culture shock?
- 9:23Speaker 0: Yeah!!
- 9:26Speaker 0: There'd be like me to see way more gun violence and I was just, I was shocked that it was a lot calmer but the food is different.
- 9:34Speaker 0: The unlimited refills...
- 9:37Speaker 1: Did you gain weight when?
- 9:38Speaker 1: I
- 9:40Speaker 0: was at my mother-in-law's house for about two months recently Probably a hundred and one kilos to like a hundred nine just like a matter of two months.
- 9:50Speaker 1: Yeah, but it helps as a big man right together.
- 9:52Speaker 1: Then
- 9:53Speaker 0: I lost all my athleticism.
- 9:55Speaker 0: Okay?
- 9:55Speaker 1: It's what depends where you gain the weight.
- 9:58Speaker 1: your buddy You spend three years at Northeastern University in Boston Especially i think In year three you made A big step As a player.
- 10:07Speaker 1: take me little bit through the few three Years.
- 10:10Speaker 0: um so The first two years that was kind Of Just trying To find My spot on the team.
- 10:15Speaker 0: It's like any young guy that is coming into a new team, you've got to find your role.
- 10:20Speaker 0: And it was kind of hard for me at first because the communication between my coach and I...it was rough.
- 10:27Speaker 0: He would communicate but i didn't understand what he was communicating..and I kept asking him What do we need?
- 10:34Speaker 0: What should be done?
- 10:35Speaker 0: Eventually I finally found my spot!
- 10:38Speaker 0: We needed someone who plays a lot of defense with scores.
- 10:45Speaker 0: We need you to grab rebounds.
- 10:46Speaker 0: We need helping the small things, we need somebody who's gonna set example on what they do in a small thing.
- 10:53Speaker 0: so going into year three after I had played for two years and gaining my confidence uh...I kinda just learned that You gotta go..you got give it your all get up there jump with the best of them.
- 11:06Speaker 0: Uh....You've got hit the floor.
- 11:08Speaker 0: you have every rebound.
- 11:09Speaker 0: don't be scared to end up on a highlight reel, it's gonna happen in everybody's career.
- 11:14Speaker 0: So if you just try and give your all there is nothing that can do but say hey I gave my
- 11:19Speaker 0: best.".
- 11:20Speaker 1: And after the year you were nominated for the CAA All-Defensive team?
- 11:24Speaker 1: Yes!
- 11:24Speaker 1: That made even more visible when decided to enter the transfer portal and come into Maryland.
- 11:29Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 11:30Speaker 1: Um...I guess we're looking forward.
- 11:31Speaker 1: place make next step as
- 11:33Speaker 0: a player or...?
- 11:34Speaker 0: It was uh.... At that point, I was kind of looking to get the same experience everybody is looking for in college basketball.
- 11:40Speaker 0: I wanted to go to the NCAA tournament... Big arenas!
- 11:44Speaker 0: Yeah March Madness.
- 11:46Speaker 0: So i had a lot faith in Buzz Williams and the roster he was creating.
- 11:52Speaker 0: Sadly we just didn't put it together until its too late.
- 11:57Speaker 0: Same thing happening here at Byroy.
- 11:59Speaker 0: We came across alot injuries..we started off our season last year.
- 12:03Speaker 0: Our first game we had seven healthy guys out of fifteen and then
- 12:07Speaker 1: sounds familiar.
- 12:08Speaker 0: Yeah, and Then right after that it was We played some lower-level teams so he got some victories That were really handed to us And then we started playing some harder.
- 12:18Speaker 0: competition knows we're playing against Yaxle Leningborg in a day Mara.
- 12:25Speaker 0: So you're going up against like lottery picks which
- 12:27Speaker 1: is drafted
- 12:28Speaker 0: yeah?
- 12:28Speaker 0: You're gonna go against top five Draft picks in the NBA and then you have barely seven healthy guys, and guys are coming back from injury And they're not playing the same as I used to ready
- 12:39Speaker 1: yet.
- 12:40Speaker 0: Yeah so uh That was really hard because our fan base turned on us very quickly.
- 12:45Speaker 0: They
- 12:46Speaker 1: sound familiar.
- 12:47Speaker 1: yeah
- 12:49Speaker 0: There's a lot of support there still but there is a lot Of hate and aggression expectations.
- 12:56Speaker 0: So it Was just.
- 12:58Speaker 0: It was Just A battle of Hey, can we stick in there?
- 13:01Speaker 0: Can we persevere.
- 13:02Speaker 0: Can we push past the hard stuff?
- 13:05Speaker 0: Can take the losses as lessons instead of just letting the loss is way down on us?
- 13:10Speaker 0: so We kept fighting through the injuries.
- 13:13Speaker 0: Uh...we lost our star big man and Our coach asked me.
- 13:17Speaker 0: he said hey I need you to step up.
- 13:22Speaker 0: You really haven't been like on the court all year But now we need you come in.
- 13:26Speaker 0: we needed a play a bit big role for it.
- 13:28Speaker 0: So I did what i could.
- 13:30Speaker 0: Like, like I said...I gave it my all!
- 13:32Speaker 0: Put everything out there and at the end of this season we had a lot more success.
- 13:37Speaker 0: We didn't ended up exactly how he wanted to..we felt short.
- 13:40Speaker 0: We lost to Iowa who eventually went on to lead eight And It was just A lot better that we played hard instead of worrying about hey What is everybody saying?
- 13:53Speaker 0: Or were you-We just lost his last game?
- 13:55Speaker 0: Buhu us.
- 13:57Speaker 0: pity me pity me
- 13:59Speaker 1: But who was the toughest guy you had to defend during that year?
- 14:03Speaker 1: As we just mentioned, he played against several other
- 14:06Speaker 0: big teams.
- 14:08Speaker 0: I forget his name... He's a German kid too!
- 14:09Speaker 0: We were talking trash in Germany and everybody on the court is like what do you guys
- 14:12Speaker 0: sing?!
- 14:13Speaker 0: You play at Ohio State... I can't remember his name.
- 14:19Speaker 0: Yeah
- 14:21Speaker 1: it doesn't come to my mind as well but
- 14:22Speaker 0: yeah.. He probably was the toughest guy i've ever had to guard And then after him there was Heinz Steinbach.
- 14:27Speaker 0: No of course.
- 14:30Speaker 0: We talked trash in German too, so those are probably the hardest guys I had to play.
- 14:35Speaker 1: He's tough!
- 14:36Speaker 0: Yeah and he was like a double-double machine.
- 14:38Speaker 0: So yeah Those were just some of the tougher guys at guard.
- 14:43Speaker 0: This one kid out of Illinois.
- 14:45Speaker 0: they had this freshman four man And he was just One great player.
- 14:51Speaker 0: He hustled, gave it his all.
- 14:52Speaker 0: He could score or shoot Or dribble.
- 14:54Speaker 0: It was an all around threat.
- 14:57Speaker 1: So you just mentioned at Maryland, that you were like a role player with certain roles the coach wanted to fill out.
- 15:05Speaker 1: What were your expectations when you came to Bayreuth?
- 15:07Speaker 1: Like there might be in similar role for first year as professional or...?
- 15:13Speaker 0: Yeah I came up with understanding... There's lot of pros who can score twenty-thirty points.
- 15:22Speaker 0: We've seen it on our team this season Josh who came out and had a thirty point game the first Game of The Season.
- 15:29Speaker 0: then you have guys turning around.
- 15:31Speaker 0: We have multiple guys going seventeen here eighteen here twenty here Nineteen sixteen, so I know that points are gonna come naturally to you if You just hustling stuff like that.
- 15:42Speaker 0: But the only way that you're gonna be successful is if everybody can play their role.
- 15:47Speaker 0: So everybody can't beat the number one score on their team.
- 15:49Speaker 0: There's only so many points they get scored?
- 15:51Speaker 0: So i knew That coming in how To Be Something Different Couldn't just be hey score score score.
- 15:57Speaker 0: Hey, what else can I do?
- 15:58Speaker 0: And
- 15:58Speaker 1: then you came from like a defensive mindset.
- 16:00Speaker 1: Yeah always were like the rim protector guys who had to focus on upside defense rebounding The ball and actually putting the ball in the basket.
- 16:07Speaker 1: yeah
- 16:08Speaker 0: so it was just that level of That level of difference is kind of kind of shocking me too when I came here because I was Ready to come in and just kind of play my role and this talk When I'm in the ball screens talked when I'm coming back in transition, but it's more of a. you have to communicate with the whole five and not just You and The guy that's interacting right now.
- 16:30Speaker 0: So
- 16:32Speaker 1: Yeah But still your very effective on the offensive end this season as well.
- 16:37Speaker 1: Was it like coach who made you believe?
- 16:39Speaker 1: That It's possible for you to put the ball into basket?
- 16:41Speaker 1: or was it Like More like A confidence shift On Your side?
- 16:44Speaker 1: um
- 16:45Speaker 0: i think it was Just.
- 16:45Speaker 0: uh i Think is a little bit Of both.
- 16:47Speaker 0: i think It was.
- 16:48Speaker 0: We had a game where Coach looked And he said hey guys look Collins working his butt off.
- 16:57Speaker 0: He's trying to get behind the defense, he was open X amount of times sometimes just looking through on the ball.
- 17:03Speaker 0: and when I have the trust from my teammates who score they give me a ball say hey go score this.
- 17:09Speaker 0: you know i can't let my team mates down had be aggressive or attack do what they trust me.
- 17:19Speaker 1: Yeah, I
- 17:23Speaker 0: had to probably say around ten.
- 17:25Speaker 0: maybe
- 17:25Speaker 1: it's six.
- 17:26Speaker 1: Six thirty three out of thirty nine Besides the free-throw free throw is fine a straight line thing.
- 17:34Speaker 1: you should like seventy percent for center.
- 17:36Speaker 1: It's quite fine.
- 17:37Speaker 1: So what really impresses me besides your performance on the quarter already mentioned Is how mature?
- 17:42Speaker 1: You seem to be in our positive and vocal.
- 17:45Speaker 1: you are instead all result of your past.
- 17:48Speaker 0: Yeah, it's
- 17:49Speaker 1: not every rookie who is coming over here like I seem different players Over the years and most of them are very shy especially when they come to a new country into A New organization And so on.
- 17:58Speaker 1: So
- 17:59Speaker 0: yeah uh i had To give credit all my brothers in My dad.
- 18:03Speaker 0: Uh no matter what was happening?
- 18:05Speaker 0: My Dad always told me hey Like you can either Be a big baby about It and cry and wine or You Can Give it your All and then after The fact After that final buzzer Goes Off Then Go back to the locker room, hang your head and be sad.
- 18:22Speaker 0: It's easy to be negative but like my brother has always taught me hey if you're positive If you keep giving that push You can come back from being down a lot Like we saw in that second half.
- 18:34Speaker 0: That was all energy for our guys.
- 18:36Speaker 0: it is about Being positive with one another.
- 18:38Speaker 0: When you see teams who are always negative And have rookies who were shy The whole team starts feeding off of the negative energy.
- 18:48Speaker 0: You'll have gains or you lose by forty every time.
- 18:52Speaker 0: so it's been a big adjustment.
- 18:54Speaker 0: trying to be the biggest positive guy.
- 18:57Speaker 0: Sometimes I want to be frustrated.
- 18:58Speaker 0: I really do wanna be frustrated, but we don't-we don't have that luxury right now for guys to be wallowing they We all need somebody to help us all emotionally and It was really easy especially here in Obam Frenk et Halle When you when I hear the crowd going and I have a play And it's just like, I heard that the chance now here to scream.
- 19:19Speaker 0: You know, I'm just like We.
- 19:21Speaker 0: we have a chance?
- 19:21Speaker 0: So he had a chance to Turn this around.
- 19:24Speaker 0: We have a change to keep going and keep fighting
- 19:27Speaker 1: But also think of the court.
- 19:28Speaker 1: so when I met you The first couple of days when we had like team events and stuff Like that you were so open-minded so your weren't like a guy sitting on the last chair at the table, being on his phone.
- 19:37Speaker 1: You were always like trying to talk people and be open-minded.
- 19:40Speaker 1: I think that's part of your past where you've had to get along with different peoples from different nations in different languages.
- 19:47Speaker 0: Yeah!
- 19:48Speaker 0: It can't shine a big family either.
- 19:50Speaker 1: And i think it is easy for you make new friends because we have just adapted.
- 19:58Speaker 1: Can we talk about your volleyball career real quick?
- 20:02Speaker 1: I figured out that you were a decent volleyball player in high school.
- 20:05Speaker 0: Yeah, uh That was actually the first sport i got to college offer too.
- 20:09Speaker 0: Uh...I just- I played even harder and volleyball than I did basketball.
- 20:14Speaker 0: You
- 20:14Speaker 1: can't imagine!
- 20:16Speaker 0: It's my.
- 20:16Speaker 0: it was my first passion.
- 20:18Speaker 0: Um Definitely was a lot easier of a sport to play because you don't have to run up and down Up and Down Up And Down.
- 20:23Speaker 0: Now Just Move from this spot to that spot, and it's not that hard.
- 20:26Speaker 0: I just jumped so... It was a lot of fun!
- 20:29Speaker 0: Uh..I hit the ball really hard-it was like a good time in a really fun sport.
- 20:36Speaker 0: And uh....I wanted to play because i wanted to play for the german national team.
- 20:41Speaker 0: but those guys are just ridiculous.
- 20:44Speaker 0: Yeah they're taller than me and jump way higher.
- 20:48Speaker 0: You guys got it.
- 20:49Speaker 1: I think i read that Simon Hildebrand used to play a volleyball player at high school as well.
- 20:52Speaker 1: Yeah, I think you too would make two good middle blockers.
- 20:57Speaker 1: So maybe our local volleyball team can hire you in the north season.
- 21:01Speaker 1: No actually out players get hurt and off-season when they do sports.
- 21:03Speaker 1: so please don't do.
- 21:06Speaker 1: Have some of your German relatives already attended one of our games?
- 21:10Speaker 0: Um my mom shouted best friends.
- 21:12Speaker 0: uh They came to The kidder's time game.
- 21:18Speaker 0: They came and they saw me there.
- 21:19Speaker 0: My uncle, he lives too far north And
- 21:23Speaker 1: I think it's still a two-hour drive from their but
- 21:26Speaker 0: yeah.
- 21:27Speaker 0: But uh It was just hard for them because they had to take off work and stuff like that.
- 21:31Speaker 0: so
- 21:33Speaker 1: So as positive as your start has been For you personally at least as the player As frustrating and must be That we couldn't get our first win yet How would you describe The current mood on team?
- 21:43Speaker 1: um
- 21:47Speaker 0: i feel Like The same mood that the fans have.
- 21:51Speaker 0: I feel like we're so frustrated with ourselves right now, That... We've kind of started to see- Like..We can't start pointing fingers!
- 21:58Speaker 0: We had to start taking accountability.
- 22:02Speaker 0: Uh...I think....The last two games?
- 22:05Speaker 0: I been very happy With the team's effort towards pushing forward.
- 22:12Speaker 0: Because we saw hey...we keep losing by twenty because we keep not playing hard and it is Oh, we can't say oh it's coach is fault and always his fall.
- 22:23Speaker 0: Always the ref fault.
- 22:24Speaker 0: no We got to take The if you gotta take into our own hands to play harder And I think has been a lot easier now seeing that.
- 22:33Speaker 0: hey where only six?
- 22:34Speaker 0: You have nothing to lose you.
- 22:35Speaker 0: Have you had to go out there and play harder than you've ever played you at the play Harder.
- 22:39Speaker 0: then the last game.
- 22:40Speaker 0: you can't take your game off.
- 22:46Speaker 0: We're starting to slowly become more mature.
- 22:59Speaker 0: You
- 23:03Speaker 1: will never be able to dig out of that hole when you stay negative.
- 23:06Speaker 1: Yeah, so with you We already have a good defender but still defense.
- 23:09Speaker 1: might we?
- 23:10Speaker 1: one of our biggest problems?
- 23:11Speaker 1: So far what do you think is the main reason for that?
- 23:13Speaker 1: Is it just like not playing hard enough lack of energy talent communication would?
- 23:19Speaker 1: um
- 23:22Speaker 0: I Think it's just uh A little bit of energy and maturity.
- 23:25Speaker 0: Mm-hmm Sometimes When we're on a ten point run And we're hitting all of our shots Our defense looks amazing.
- 23:33Speaker 0: Then we come down and start missing some shots, it's like our energy goes down... I had to go play defense now.
- 23:41Speaker 0: so the maturity of letting our offense be a motor for our defense is kind-of backwards.
- 23:49Speaker 0: We are slowly starting to see that our defense has become a little bit more of an offence.
- 23:54Speaker 0: So when you get a stop now Excited to go play offense instead of when we get a score more excited.
- 24:01Speaker 0: Go play defense now.
- 24:02Speaker 0: So I think the reverse of that is The maturity of it and the energy of it.
- 24:08Speaker 0: as we.
- 24:10Speaker 0: You can see in some guys's face That they kind of get tired, and then they try take a playoff on defense
- 24:16Speaker 1: which you can't afford.
- 24:17Speaker 0: Yeah, he can't forwarded.
- 24:18Speaker 0: And it's not just one guy who can't just point his finger and say hey its Number eighty eight You can't say his number is seventy five.
- 24:28Speaker 0: It's players one, two three four or five as all of us are taking some plays off and that kind have been infectious on the team And we're trying to fix that in coaches looking at this and saying hey look on film This is you right here taking a playoff so he starting.
- 24:42Speaker 0: hold us accountable now.
- 24:43Speaker 0: I
- 24:46Speaker 1: think the maturity thing that you just mentioned is always that.
- 24:49Speaker 1: You tend not to be in the present moment, always so Always think about The last play that went wrong and suddenly already sleeping on defense because In your head?
- 24:58Speaker 1: You're still thinking maybe About the last shot That was being missed.
- 25:01Speaker 1: So i Think that's something you learn in Your career when you get more experience To always Be present no matter what happened in the Last thirty seconds.
- 25:10Speaker 1: that might be Something that Maybe the team might figure out in the next couple of games hopefully actually.
- 25:16Speaker 1: So as you just mentioned last game, we made some mistakes in the first half that led basically to The same losses that we had before In the second half.
- 25:26Speaker 1: You turn things around so but why does it?
- 25:29Speaker 1: Looks like that We first have to make mistakes on the game in order to fix them.
- 25:34Speaker 0: Yeah I think I said an interview earlier this season.
- 25:40Speaker 0: It's kind of like were either one half or the other and its.
- 25:43Speaker 0: Well, I can't figure it out.
- 25:45Speaker 0: I can put my mind to and I can really explain It.
- 25:47Speaker 0: but sometimes we'll have a great first five minutes.
- 25:51Speaker 0: where were?
- 25:52Speaker 0: hey like we're at Cures time is We're going up work.
- 25:55Speaker 0: We're up fourteen to twelve mm-hmm And then?
- 25:58Speaker 0: We kind of lose that confidence.
- 25:59Speaker 0: when the guy comes down he hits three contested threes in a row or
- 26:03Speaker 1: Same in cologne.
- 26:04Speaker 0: Yeah
- 26:05Speaker 1: They hit like crazy shots on the second quarter and then you lost confidence.
- 26:08Speaker 0: yeah, and this kind of just like its hard too.
- 26:11Speaker 0: It's hard when you're starting to put your head down and you're coming back.
- 26:14Speaker 0: And now You're like, all right They just hit a crazy shot was.
- 26:17Speaker 0: now is my turn to hit a Crazy Shot?
- 26:18Speaker 0: So sometimes we try to go bucket for bucket.
- 26:22Speaker 0: When we need to stop get-a-bucket they maybe get one.
- 26:26Speaker 0: Now We Need A find way To Get Another Stop.
- 26:28Speaker 0: so it Is not so much of were losing the whole half.
- 26:34Speaker 0: We lose a quarter in really bad Way Sometimes.
- 26:39Speaker 0: I'll look at it after the game and say, hey let me go back to what happened.
- 26:43Speaker 0: First quarter we were hanging in there then got into second quarter.
- 26:47Speaker 0: We went from a six-point deficit to an eighteen point deficit.
- 26:50Speaker 0: So What happened?
- 26:51Speaker 0: There was that we saw them going up by so much.
- 26:56Speaker 0: Was is the fact That we just couldn't hit good shots or was this The fact that we rushed shots?
- 27:03Speaker 0: I took a very rushed shot last game and i looked at myself, why did you take that?
- 27:10Speaker 0: We could have stopped.
- 27:10Speaker 0: We had way more time on the clock.
- 27:12Speaker 0: I shot it with too much time left.
- 27:15Speaker 0: It's not just one person doing this.
- 27:17Speaker 0: All of us are doing it.
- 27:20Speaker 0: The runs were about maturity With the offense leading into defense.
- 27:26Speaker 0: When we finally get turned all-way around It will be easier for me to play full forty.
- 27:34Speaker 0: That second half showed us to ourselves that hey, we gotta stop letting one instance change our whole aspect on the game because if we just play hard there's not.
- 27:45Speaker 0: a lot of teams are like gonna push back and fight back.
- 27:48Speaker 0: Some guys were pretty old some teams or pretty old like Kiersheim.
- 27:52Speaker 0: We should have ran them out in the gym when they had young legs At Cologne.
- 27:58Speaker 0: we should've kept running him up super aggressive defensive guard.
- 28:04Speaker 0: so there's just a lot of like little things that lead to these bad first halves.
- 28:12Speaker 1: So what is your biggest reason for not losing hope?
- 28:15Speaker 1: you will figure out soon how to win games?
- 28:19Speaker 0: When you lose hope, you should go pack it up and go home.
- 28:23Speaker 0: You're wasting everybody time.
- 28:26Speaker 0: I have faith in my coach.
- 28:32Speaker 0: When we're a solid machine, We look like we could be further along than we should.
- 28:40Speaker 0: I've seen so many stretches that i'm just like hey Like how can't play basketball?
- 28:44Speaker 0: And then turn around and lose by this much.
- 28:47Speaker 0: Uh...I have faith because I've Seen the snapshots of what we Could Be The snapshots Of when you Play A full-forty Playing as Hard As You Can.
- 28:57Speaker 0: It's Not Easy For People To Be With Us.
- 29:01Speaker 0: Coach has plenty of great game plans and we have plenty of Great Scout.
- 29:04Speaker 0: We have plenty Of talent.
- 29:06Speaker 0: so when, we get the hard work Into that equation then it will be a lot easier for us to start winning games.
- 29:12Speaker 0: That
- 29:12Speaker 1: sounds great.
- 29:13Speaker 1: And if you could make A wish For yourself or The remainder of the season what would It Be?
- 29:17Speaker 0: Um...that we as uh..we As a team and we as a community Keep trying To Have that positive energy.
- 29:24Speaker 0: i'm happy to see That fans are still showing up.
- 29:28Speaker 0: Uh it means alot Especially at home.
- 29:31Speaker 0: The energy that we get from the crowd is so infectious.
- 29:34Speaker 0: And I saw it last year at Maryland when fans started leaving and everybody was like, oh, We don't trust this team anymore to play in blah-blah-blAH.
- 29:43Speaker 0: our losses got worse and worse and worst.
- 29:45Speaker 0: So uh When we when we have somebody look forward to Satisfying them when we win at home?
- 29:54Speaker 0: It's like we had a look at the crowd now say hey Like you stuck out when were are bad space.
- 30:00Speaker 0: So now that you were in our bad space, welcome to the good space.
- 30:03Speaker 0: It's it's a lot easier To win when you have this support of everybody still behind you.
- 30:08Speaker 1: absolutely.
- 30:09Speaker 1: so let's talk about The game on Friday.
- 30:11Speaker 1: Yes, where are we playing?
