- 0:00Speaker 1: What's up, everyone, and welcome to another episode of the
- 0:03Epstein Chronicles. In this episode, we're going to pick up
- 0:07where he left off with the Bill Gates testimony to Congress.
- 0:11Question correct, Now, I want to talk a little bit
- 0:15more about this blackmail that I think you characterize these drafts,
- 0:19these emails Epstein sent to himself as potential blackmail. Answer
- 0:24as I see them today, that's, you know, my guess
- 0:27about what he might be thinking about. Question do you
- 0:29think that he was hoping to take a cut of
- 0:31this proposed deal he was offering to doctor Nicolch. Answer?
- 0:35I'm not aware of that he may have. Question he
- 0:38never did he ever ask you for money directly paid
- 0:40to him? Or was it always this discussion of money
- 0:43for doctor Nicolich. Answer? He had one point, kind of
- 0:46a weird email says that I he purports that I
- 0:51said that I was in his debt, but that he
- 0:54said I wasn't in his debt. And the truth is
- 0:57I never said he was in debt. But despite his
- 1:00saying that he didn't think that I was in his debt,
- 1:02in that email, he seems to ask for donations to
- 1:05be made in his name to a variety of entities.
- 1:08So that's along the lines of, hey, I helped you
- 1:10out with this exit, and you owe me, even though
- 1:13the email says you don't owe me. Question did you
- 1:16ever make a donation to that entity in Jeffrey Epstein's
- 1:19name for him? Answer? Never in his name? Question did
- 1:22you ever make a donation to any entity that he
- 1:25had asked you to donate to? Answer? Yeah, there's an
- 1:28intersection of the list he sent me and an institution
- 1:31that I'd given to literally for decades through my work
- 1:34at Microsoft personally and through the foundation, which is MIT.
- 1:38And I did make a two million dollar donation to MIT. Well,
- 1:41I made it. We can get the date overlapping this
- 1:44period that I knew mister Epstein. Question was that donation
- 1:47related in any way to mister Epstein or you saying
- 1:50it's happenstance since you had already been donating to them.
- 1:54Answer I'd say the timing was somewhat related. That is,
- 1:57I've given to MIT many times. There's a building there,
- 2:01you know, there's some ongoing medical work, which is absolutely fantastic.
- 2:06But I gave a two million dollar donation without you know,
- 2:09mentioning mister Epstein's name. You know, not related to any
- 2:12program that he was involved in, and so that was
- 2:14the primary purpose was to help MIT. As a secondary thing,
- 2:19I did tell mister Epstein about the donation, hoping that
- 2:22it might factor into his no longer coming to me
- 2:25and asking for donations in his name, which is something
- 2:27I've been clear I was not going to do. Question. So,
- 2:31just to be clear, the donation to MIT was not
- 2:34in response to any blackmail or threats that mister Epstein
- 2:37had made. Answer. No, The primary purpose was to get
- 2:42resources to MIT, who had always used my gifts in
- 2:45a very effective way. There was a secondary thing that
- 2:48I told Epstein about and hoping that would bring an
- 2:50end to this weird set of emails where he acted
- 2:53like I should make a donation in his name. Mister Grant,
- 2:57And did MIT ever discuss Jeffrey Epstein with Hugh at
- 2:59any point during the donation process? Gates No. No. In fact,
- 3:05they did an investigation to make sure that the donation
- 3:08was not Epstein related and found that it was not.
- 3:12Question And did they talk to you as part of
- 3:14the investigation? Answer? Yes, question by mister spector. Question again,
- 3:19I'll try to avoid too much paper, but a representative
- 3:22for you in the media said that mister Gates met
- 3:24with Epstein solely for philanthropic purposes. Having failed a repeated
- 3:29lead to draw mister Gates beyond these matters, Epstein tried
- 3:32unsuccessfully at a leverage a pass relationship the threatened mister Gates.
- 3:37So let's talk about that last part first. He tried
- 3:41unsuccessfully to leverage a pass relationship. Is that the three
- 3:44affairs we've discussed or is it something else? Answer? Doctor
- 3:49Jacobs never came up with Epstein any way, shape or form,
- 3:52so it certainly doesn't refer to that. As I said
- 3:55during the exit period, there was never an explicit hey,
- 3:58if you don't do something, I'll reveal this. There was
- 4:02a veiled type of language, Hey, we should all want
- 4:04to be friends. And as I've said, I took that
- 4:08on very explicitly and said, look, if you think you're
- 4:11going to get more money out of this, it's not
- 4:13gonna happen. And if that means you go out and
- 4:15talk to people about things, I will just bear the
- 4:17pain of that and deal with it. And so I was.
- 4:22I was not blackmailed. But you know, as you look
- 4:24at the emails, you know it looks like mister Epstein brainstorming,
- 4:27and he was going in that direction. Question, and just
- 4:30to be clear the past relationship that he unsuccessfully tried
- 4:33to leverage. What that refers to is the thinly veiled
- 4:36threats we've already discussed over the course of today's interview.
- 4:40Answer relative to the bridge player and the nuclear well.
- 4:43At the time, I mean, I wasn't sure what it
- 4:46referred to, but I had to assume that there was
- 4:48some chance that the two affairs that Boris was aware
- 4:51of had communication mister Epstein. Question, and just to clarify
- 4:55also the beginning part of that statement, mister Gates met
- 4:59with Epstein's solely for philanthropic purposes. As we've discussed today,
- 5:04you also met with mister Epstein with regard to the
- 5:06dispute with the negotiation with doctor Nikolitch. Is that right? Answer? Yeah,
- 5:11And there were dinners where a philanthropic thing would have
- 5:13come up, but wouldn't have necessarily, you know, when Jess
- 5:16Daily or Larry Summers was there, these you and people
- 5:19that I'm meeting for the first time, we would discuss
- 5:21other topics. So the primary topic of the times I
- 5:25spent with mister Epstein were my attempt to raise billions
- 5:28for global health. There were other things, including doctor Nikolitch's exit,
- 5:33you know, when he comes out in August. I doubt
- 5:35we discussed global health at that meeting. I think that
- 5:38was solely focused on this exit question. And just to
- 5:41be clear, the statement says that you solely met with
- 5:44mister Epstein for philanthropic purposes, So that's not true then, right, answer,
- 5:51I it's the correct summary would be to say that
- 5:54the primary reason that I met with him, you know,
- 5:56so if a report is oversimplified, that's a mistake. Question.
- 6:00And again, you've said that you were not black meilt,
- 6:02and I think maybe what you mean is you were
- 6:05not successfully black melt, but it seems like mister Epstein
- 6:07was trying to really hard to blackmail you answer. If
- 6:10those emails that contained some truth and some false things
- 6:13were ever sent, then we could say that there was
- 6:16an attempt to blackmail that never happened. You know, I
- 6:18don't know if doctor Nikolch ever saw those, but I
- 6:21certainly never saw those. Those would have been then it
- 6:24would have been hard or been black and white that
- 6:27that's what they were attempting to do. What actually happened
- 6:30is that they made veiled references that because of that,
- 6:33you know, I explicitly raised the idea that they're disclosing
- 6:36whatever they knew about me, that I would deal with that,
- 6:39and I was going to raise the offer because of
- 6:41my concerns about what might be behind those veiled references. Question.
- 6:46And I think that's correct when you look back at
- 6:48majority Exhibit one and in the emails that are open
- 6:51discussions between mister Epstein and nicolch about you, you know,
- 6:54in an email they might send to you again that
- 6:57they ultimately did not. It's more thinly. It only references,
- 7:02as we discussed earlier, sensitive information and a dilemma of
- 7:05trust and these thinly veiled threats. Is that kind of
- 7:10what you're talking about, that sort of language. Answer? I
- 7:13think you're referring to an email that I'm not copied on. Question.
- 7:16You are not copied on the email? That's correct? Answer, Yeah, moron.
- 7:21Is that the type of statement gets cut off by Gates.
- 7:24That is the type of statement that Epstein made. Specter, Okay,
- 7:28they go off the record, they come back on question.
- 7:32Good afternoon, mister Gates answer, good afternoon. Question. When we left,
- 7:36during our last round together, we were proceeding through the
- 7:39chronology of your meetings with mister Epstein. I'd like to
- 7:42continue doing that if I could, but first just step
- 7:45back in time to twenty eleven, and this would be
- 7:48your first meeting with mister Epstein at his home. In
- 7:51January of twenty eleven, it was reported in Forbes magazine
- 7:55that after visiting Epstein for the first time, you told
- 7:58colleagues in an email the next day that Epstein, and
- 8:02I'm quoting from the article lifestyle is very different and
- 8:05kind of intriguing, although it would not work for me.
- 8:08Do you recall telling colleagues that after your initial visit. Answer? Yeah,
- 8:13I sent an email to one person saying that question.
- 8:15Who was that person? Answer, doctor Walker question? And what
- 8:19did you mean by different and intriguing? Answer? Well, as
- 8:23you said, that was the first time I'd ever met Epstein,
- 8:26and during that dinner meeting, he'd refer to a lot
- 8:28of scientists and economists that would spend time talking to him.
- 8:32You know, I never followed up to see, you know,
- 8:34particularly given what I know about his credibility now which
- 8:37of those were real and were not real? But you know,
- 8:40my first impression was that he took time being kind
- 8:43of different, a lot of different science and economic areas,
- 8:47and you know, I picked particular areas to focus in
- 8:50software while I was at Microsoft, and global health and
- 8:53education at the Foundation, and so yes, I made the
- 8:56remark that it was what I'd heard from him was
- 8:59intriguing but not for me. Question I appreciate that. And
- 9:04then stepping ahead in time again back to twenty fourteen,
- 9:08just generally, do you have any recollection of the meetings
- 9:10that you had with Jeffrey Epstein during that year? Answer?
- 9:14I know the last two. If we want to go
- 9:16through the mall, I should refresh my recollection. Answer. I
- 9:20think before you do that, I'll show you another exhibit,
- 9:23and this will be Exhibit F. This is yet another
- 9:26email setting forth Jeffrey Epstein's schedule from September twenty fourteen.
- 9:31It refers to some kind of specific meetings I'd like
- 9:33to ask you about. So, looking at the first entry
- 9:37at the top of the email from September eighth, twenty fourteen,
- 9:41there is a notation for ten am meeting with you
- 9:43and Tom Pritzker at the Park Hyatt in New York.
- 9:46Do you recall that meeting? Answer? Yes? Question okay, what
- 9:50was the purpose of that meeting answer, Well, as we
- 9:54got into late twenty thirteen. In twenty fourteen, and Epstein
- 9:57was focusing on more of the structure of how these
- 10:00reported donations would be handled. I, particularly after the fall
- 10:04of twenty thirteen, put a lot more pressure on them
- 10:07to identify specifically, you know, which Wall Street or Middle
- 10:10East or other billionaires. Did he really think we're going
- 10:13to make these large donations, because you know, very few
- 10:16people give money to global health and I, you know,
- 10:20wanted to see if he was stringing me out or
- 10:22was legitimate. And in response to that, he said, oh, yeah,
- 10:25there's a bunch. Let me set up some meetings with
- 10:28some of the people who may do this thing. And
- 10:31so this series of meetings on September fifth. This is
- 10:34the second to last time that I ever spent with Epstein,
- 10:37but it's the first time that I'm getting concrete that, hey,
- 10:40if this is going to happen, here are the people
- 10:43or some of the people. And he still referred to
- 10:45the Middle East and said, you know, they might be
- 10:47available later, but that didn't amount to anything. So we
- 10:51met with several people on September fifth in New York City.
- 10:55Question and I'll walk through each of these meetings set
- 10:57forth in the exhibit in more detail, but overall, you know, oh,
- 11:00the first entry, as I noted, refers to a meeting
- 11:02with Tom Pritzker. There's another referringly on Black, another to
- 11:06Larry Summers, another to mort Zuckerman, and another with Kathy Rumler.
- 11:12What was your overall assessment at the conclusion of this
- 11:15series of meetings. Were you satisfied that the prospect of
- 11:18securing funding was becoming more concrete or did it still
- 11:21remain nebulous and in choate in your mind? Answer? Yeah,
- 11:26to be clear, I never saw Larry Summers on this day.
- 11:29Question sure, and I'll get to that one answer. Okay, question,
- 11:33but yeah, I appreciate the clarification. Answer. No, Unfortunately, these
- 11:39were friendly meetings, and you know, I talked about Gavey
- 11:42and Global Fund and lots of things in global health
- 11:44where lives are being saved, you know, for less than
- 11:46two thousand per life. It didn't appear any of these people.
- 11:50The Kathy Rumler meeting is of a different nature, which
- 11:54we can talk about, but she was not a potential giver.
- 11:57The other men that I met that day were presented
- 11:59as POTENTI givers, and they were very polite, you know,
- 12:02praising the work I was doing in global health, but
- 12:05they clearly none of them was at a point where
- 12:08they were deciding to give large additional sums in general
- 12:11and not the global health. They were impolite enough to
- 12:14say that, you know, maybe when they get around to
- 12:17doing their full giving plans, they might think about it.
- 12:20But it was complete disappointment from my point of view,
- 12:23even though it was all very friendly. All right, folks,
- 12:26we're going to wrap up right here, and in the
- 12:28next episode dealing with the topic, we're going to pick
- 12:30up where we left off. All the information that goes
- 12:33with this episode can be found in the description box.
