- 0:00What's up y'all, you're listening to the Extra Point
- 0:03College football podcast. I'm your host Jacob Carnes,
- 0:05joined as always by my Co host Daniel Hammock.
- 0:09Daniel is we're both festive. You know, I've got a red and
- 0:12green hat on just for the Rose Bowl.
- 0:14You're wearing your red and green hat for Christmas
- 0:16recording this December 23rd. So Merry Christmas everybody,
- 0:19whenever you're listening to this.
- 0:21But on this episode, we're going to recap our first round College
- 0:25Football Playoff matchups. We'll talk about there.
- 0:28There was a lot of discourse over the weekend of what changes
- 0:33need to be made because change is inevitably coming.
- 0:35I don't think anyone likes the results of having two blowouts
- 0:39in first round games. We'll talk about that kind of
- 0:41the feature of the playoff future of college football.
- 0:43Where do we go from here? And then of course, we've now
- 0:46got our quarterfinal games and matchups, four games.
- 0:51We'll pick them against the spread.
- 0:52So we'll give you our winners, but also picks against the
- 0:55spread. Daniel, we three and one last
- 0:57week should have been 4. Now we can we can talk about
- 1:00that as we get to our first round recap here.
- 1:02But Daniel, Merry Christmas. Happy to have some some more
- 1:06football on the horizon. Although it is winding down, we
- 1:09are going to crown a champion here within the next few weeks.
- 1:12So excited to talk about these first round matchups.
- 1:14Daniel. We had the we had the stand
- 1:18alone game on Friday of Alabama and Oklahoma.
- 1:21That was a great stand alone game.
- 1:23Small thing I did here before the game, Alabama players
- 1:27talking about the lights in Norman and how they're different
- 1:30and it messed with them last time.
- 1:32And I saw past the excuses and watching it was really
- 1:36interesting because in Norman they've only got 4 light poles
- 1:42in the four corners, which most stadiums, if you look, most
- 1:45stadiums have lights running the length of the sideline like it's
- 1:48more than just four places. So the lighting did seem dark
- 1:51and the lighting is unique there.
- 1:53So there was something I had an eye on that I thought was
- 1:55interesting about the game. The other interesting part was
- 1:58that Oklahoma now becomes the first team in college football
- 2:00to blow 217 point leads in the playoff.
- 2:03Bama comes back, wins by 10. Credit to Bama, man, huge win to
- 2:08come back from. And the surprising thing for me
- 2:11was they flipped the script from the first matchup we talked
- 2:16about in our pick that the Alabama had out came to
- 2:19Oklahoma. Like they had doubled him up in
- 2:21yardage in the first matchup, Just had a crazy turnover game.
- 2:23And Dang, that was kind of the opposite.
- 2:25Bama won the way that Oklahoma won the first time.
- 2:29Now post game win expectancy was way different.
- 2:31Alabama actually had like an 85% post game win expectancy but
- 2:36didn't not gain him, didn't do anything exceptionally well, but
- 2:40had the turnover luck, which I think it is.
- 2:42Flipped the other way and have a 10 point win and it came back
- 2:45from a 10 point deficit. So 27 point square, excuse me, a
- 2:4817 point deficit, a 27 point swing there.
- 2:52Pretty incredible and really impressive win from Alabama on
- 2:54the road. Yeah, I mean, Alabama, they did
- 2:58what they needed to do in this game.
- 3:00Oklahoma, you know, you mentioned they kind of switch
- 3:02things up. I mean, Oklahoma's kicker, you
- 3:04know the the guy with the short shorts, he missed his first
- 3:08field goal since the first game of the year, so.
- 3:10Crazy. Definitely some things that
- 3:13went, I guess you could say uncharacteristic for Oklahoma.
- 3:16John Material actually looked right.
- 3:18You know, obviously that getting things going, you know,
- 3:21obviously they were talking about before the game he had the
- 3:24tape removed from his hand for the first time since the injury.
- 3:28But yeah, that was definitely a game where early on we started
- 3:31to get some texts from people saying no, hey, y'all picked
- 3:34Alabama. And I I was in the sense that,
- 3:38you know, like, oh man, I didn't realize Oklahoma was going to
- 3:41come out and play like this, you know, but very quickly, I mean,
- 3:45you know, within the first half, they came back.
- 3:47So it wasn't even something where you had to count on like a
- 3:50second-half or fourth quarter come back.
- 3:52It was like, Oh no, it's even at halftime.
- 3:54And very confidently at halftime, I could say I was
- 3:57looking at it thinking, I mean, we've seen these teams.
- 4:00I know how the game is going to play out and in no disrespect,
- 4:03Oklahoma, but it's in the pedigree, like the playoff
- 4:07pedigree so far. Alabama is a team that's not
- 4:10going to go away. They've been that way in the
- 4:12playoff era. I'm going to give them credit
- 4:15all the way back to, you know, 20/14/2015 as well.
- 4:17All of those years, even with, you know, Saban versus De Boer,
- 4:21De Boer is that way as well. Just as a coach, even when he
- 4:24was at, you know, his previous stops.
- 4:27Oklahoma, you know, and I know it's been multiple head coaches,
- 4:30but they've they're over the playoff.
- 4:34You know, you have to start thinking those things and if I'm
- 4:38Oklahoma, I I would be upset that I got the draw of Alabama
- 4:41getting a rematch with them for my home game.
- 4:44But it is what it is. You got to win the game.
- 4:46They got up early. I agree with you this one.
- 4:49I'm glad this was the stand alone of the three.
- 4:51I'm glad this was the Friday night game.
- 4:54Not that the any of them are competing with one another
- 4:56because you have each of them by themselves.
- 4:58But I feel like the Friday night just kind of had all eyes on it
- 5:02because there's nothing else going on.
- 5:04So you can kind of settle in and it was a cool, it was a fun
- 5:07feeling. But yeah, dude, you mentioned we
- 5:09went three and one got, you know, you get to the playoffs,
- 5:13you got to have your best is expected in the playoffs and
- 5:16we're given our best. It should have been four and oh.
- 5:20But it should have. Been three and three and you
- 5:22can't go four and oh without going three and oh first.
- 5:25And that's what we did. And it was very, it was very
- 5:28close to being four and oh. I, I want to shout out our
- 5:31pick'em group, which you can still join because ESPN will let
- 5:34you recreate a bracket. So if you have a bracket and you
- 5:36want to join our ESPN group, there is a link in the bio to
- 5:39join. We got 26 people in there having
- 5:42a good time, I believe. Let's see how many 12 people
- 5:45still perfect, including you and I in the first four games so.
- 5:48There you go. Join us there.
- 5:50Links down below or you can search the extra point on ESPN's
- 5:54bracket College Football Playoff Bracket Challenge.
- 5:57So join us there. Yeah, you and I still perfect
- 6:00for no straight up. I mean, let's go.
- 6:03Let's start with the big game first and we'll we'll get to our
- 6:05our loss on the picks. Texas A&M beats Miami.
- 6:10Excuse me, Miami beats Texas A&M. 2:50 Yeah.
- 6:14In a rock fight of a game. I walk away, Daniel.
- 6:19I'll talk about winners first. Really impressed with Miami's
- 6:22defense. It's seeming #1 Texas A&M has a
- 6:25big and physical offensive line, big and physical run game.
- 6:29And the way Miami shut that down throughout the game was really
- 6:32impressive. And then on the other side, we
- 6:35knew Miami was supposed to have a very good offensive line.
- 6:37And they looked that way really early in the season.
- 6:39And it looked kind of, you know, in the middle of the season and
- 6:42looked strong again at the end. They showed up.
- 6:45I think Bud Elliott is tweeted in the middle of the game that I
- 6:48mean, if Miami just keeps running it between the tackles,
- 6:50one of these is going to break. Like they're so close to just
- 6:53breaking one of these. And then they started having
- 6:56these runs pop for 10/12/15. And they had that long one, I
- 6:59forget how long it was toward the end to set up the go at the
- 7:02go ahead touchdown with Fletcher.
- 7:04And what an unbelievable lead blocker he was on the touchdown
- 7:08as well. With with with Fletcher there.
- 7:11They get the one touchdown they needed to win the game.
- 7:15They go on the road, they hold Texas A&M to three really,
- 7:18really impressive win. This is where Daniel, and this
- 7:22is not just me. It's hard out to be a prisoner
- 7:24at the moment watching these games.
- 7:26We're texting in our group chat and I'm thinking like, gosh, can
- 7:29Alabama beat Indiana? Can can Miami go and beat Ohio
- 7:33State? And I know their offense didn't
- 7:35look spectacular, but look, 30 mile an hour winds and the way
- 7:38their defense play. And I'm, you know, we'll get
- 7:40into those games, but hard not to be present at the moment when
- 7:43you watch a really impressive Rd. win, which did not happen
- 7:45last year in the playoff. All four home teams won last
- 7:48year in the first round. So now the first two games the
- 7:52team on the road goes in and wins.
- 7:54I just walked away impressed with Miami, despite the lack of
- 7:56offensive production in the way they won that I felt like they
- 8:00played Texas A&M's game and beat them at it and which was on the
- 8:04road with everything on the line.
- 8:06I was impressed by that. Yeah, and these are the two coin
- 8:09flip games, you know, the other two we're, you know, obviously
- 8:12they're much more. You're just betting against the
- 8:14spread more or less rather than who's going to win.
- 8:17So this one though, Jacob, you're absolutely right.
- 8:20I mean, Fletcher carries 172 yards, No mathematician, but
- 8:23that's 10 yards of carry. So he was pounding the rock.
- 8:27And this is Jacob. This is why we picked Miami said
- 8:31they have multiple ways they can win this game.
- 8:34And when you took the pass game away because of all the crazy
- 8:37wins and you know, the you know, the field goals were a toss up.
- 8:41It's like, OK, well, they can exist in this rock fight of a
- 8:45game. They can play defense, they can
- 8:47run the ball, they can play field position and they can just
- 8:51keep doing it and doing it. And then eventually it broke.
- 8:53Now I've never it's, it feels almost like a maybe an Iowa,
- 8:59Iowa State kind of a game or something where it's like the
- 9:02end of the game. A single touchdown feels like it
- 9:06has iced the game. There's, you know, everybody
- 9:09runs two-minute, there's a minute 40 left or whatever for
- 9:12Texas A&M to go down. But it felt like this might as
- 9:15well have been 10 seconds left and they're going to be chucking
- 9:18it for the end zone. That's kind of the feeling I had
- 9:21after Miami punched it in finally.
- 9:23But yeah, I I agree. I come impressed with the
- 9:25defense. I think that both teams, maybe I
- 9:28don't want to say they pulled punches, but I think they both
- 9:31kind of understood the game and tried to play a different game.
- 9:35This was played in a Dome. I think you see a completely
- 9:37different game than, you know, on campus with the wind and all
- 9:40this kind of, you know, just to create, you know, elements of
- 9:43the game. I still think Miami would have
- 9:44won the other way, but I think you would have seen a higher
- 9:47scoring game. Like I didn't realize the wind
- 9:49was as bad. My father-in-law leans over
- 9:52before the game kicks off and says, Hey, what score
- 9:54prediction? I'm, I am not actually a fan of
- 9:56giving score predictions as much as I talk about college
- 10:00football. I, you know, I want to just, I
- 10:03don't want to shift my feeling on the game like I, I don't want
- 10:08it to, you know, and tarnish how I'm, I'm feeling while I'm
- 10:12watching the game. But right before the game, he
- 10:16said that. So I was like, you know what,
- 10:17what do I think? And the words that came out of
- 10:20mouth, mouth was, I think 2721 Miami.
- 10:25And boy, you know, I was like and then.
- 10:28Long away from that. He left, he left my house at
- 10:31halftime and I said, yeah, we're going to see it.
- 10:33It's going to be a 10 to 3 game. And I was right on that.
- 10:37You know, I just got to see the first half though.
- 10:38So that's cheating. But yeah, that was a some people
- 10:42watch it, say it was boring. Yeah, it's boring if you're not
- 10:45living and dying on each play. It's a defensive matchup.
- 10:48It's a field position game. You can see the anguish in the
- 10:53eyes of the fans. And I don't know about you,
- 10:55Jacob, but I know that feeling. And so I'm sitting there
- 10:58watching them watch this game and get fired up for their team,
- 11:03but also just be so nervous. I mean, there's nothing better
- 11:06than on campus college football. I mean, at that point, see, and
- 11:10I love it because dude, if it feels like every play matters,
- 11:14it's like, man, if one of us scores, so it's like you have
- 11:17one. It's like watching the NBA
- 11:18Finals game and like every possession counts.
- 11:21It's the fourth quarter and you're just watching every time
- 11:24they bring up the floor. If they get if it goes out of
- 11:26bounds, it's like the biggest deal ever.
- 11:28It's a turnover, you know, so the.
- 11:29Turnover is, yeah. So I have one text A&M thing to
- 11:33say. Marcel Reed, he this is his
- 11:35third year of eligibility. He's eligible to come back next
- 11:38year. Is Texas saying them look for
- 11:40another quarterback? I mean, this is a guy who they
- 11:42said Heisman contender earlier in the year and their two
- 11:45biggest games, Daniel, he's thrown what, 5 interceptions,
- 11:48something like that this year. He threw 2 in this game.
- 11:51No touchdowns, 25 of 39. But for 2:30, seven, 6.1 yards
- 11:55per attempt. Ran the ball for 1.8 yards per
- 11:58attempt. I mean, at the end, it was just,
- 12:01I mean, we texted our group chat, our friend Hunter, It was
- 12:03like Reed's going to throw a pick on the last drive.
- 12:05And it's exactly what happened. With as many quarterbacks that
- 12:08are available and as good as Texas A&M's team was this year
- 12:11and as high as their expectations are and as much as
- 12:14they're investing into this program, I think they look
- 12:18elsewhere. And I'll say this to this is
- 12:20bigger conversation, but I was surprised by how low DJ Lagway
- 12:26was rated as far as the quarterbacks that are available
- 12:28in the transfer portal. Don't think he's in the top 8
- 12:31which is crazy. Yeah.
- 12:35I think, I think A&M looks at Lagway.
- 12:36I, I have no sources. I just he's from.
- 12:39Texas so that's a you know, I think he does find his way back.
- 12:43I could see him finding his way back.
- 12:45I would be and I agree with you read.
- 12:48I think the fact that they had all of last year due to injury
- 12:52where he was the starter and then he had this year where it
- 12:55was his essentially his show, his offense.
- 12:57I say all of last year he had half of last year where they
- 12:59finally settled on him. And then this year he had the
- 13:02full season. I think you've you've given him
- 13:04his chance to do it and in the biggest games he's showing you
- 13:08he can't. I mean, Texas A&M can go get
- 13:13somebody that that's if it was a school that was like, yeah, I
- 13:16just don't know if we're going to be able to attract somebody
- 13:18who's actually better if there's better guys out there.
- 13:21You're already going to be changing offensive coordinators
- 13:23because Colin Klein's leaving. Why don't you bring a new guy in
- 13:27and just have it be an A fresh new offense?
- 13:30If Reed wants to stay and compete, dude, let him stay and
- 13:32compete. He's a good player.
- 13:34And then, you know, if he beats him out, great.
- 13:36But yeah, I I think Lagway is a way to go.
- 13:38There's some other guys that are entering the portal that could
- 13:41definitely be an improvement. Tough way for texting him to end
- 13:44their season again. The drought continues.
- 13:48Was it 1937 since their national championship?
- 13:52So they're the one everybody's talking about.
- 13:53But Miami marches on, and they get the prize of playing Ohio
- 13:58State. Get the prize of playing Ohio
- 14:00State Daniel two more games. Ole Miss beats 2 lane, 4110.
- 14:05First scores 4510 and then Oregon 5134.
- 14:10They lose the cover. But Daniel at one point in this
- 14:12game had 20. Oregon had 21 plays and had
- 14:16scored I think 35 points, 34 points.
- 14:19Yeah, because then it's the extra point.
- 14:21I mean, this is where EPA comes in, Daniel, of like, what EPA
- 14:25have you added? And it's like every time they
- 14:28snap the ball they are at. It was like they're adding at
- 14:32one point in the game. It was like every time they
- 14:34snapped the ball, it's like they're adding 1.25 points to
- 14:37the scoreboard, like every time they took a snap.
- 14:40That's a video game and that's like if you put the video game
- 14:43on freshman, you can't do that on Heisman.
- 14:46And you're just running it. It looked like they were just
- 14:48running go routes and he's just like Hut, wait a second, wait a
- 14:51second, Chuck it. 60 yard touchdown.
- 14:54OK, let's try that again next drive like it it was like 18
- 14:57yards of play at one point. So the fact that we lost that
- 15:00cover, it's. Frustrating.
- 15:02It's infuriating. I'll say this.
- 15:04So as far as that game is concerned, you, you know, we
- 15:07both kind of called it out. You know, I think you're going
- 15:10to see a big a big statement from Oregon.
- 15:12That's exactly what you got. We were still right, all of that
- 15:15stuff, still the one field goal and this whole game is
- 15:18different. So as far as our pick being
- 15:20correct or not, I do. I just want to shout out the
- 15:24Twitter for both James Madison, Oregon.
- 15:27This was possibly the most fun I've had as a complete third
- 15:32party just watching 2 teams tweeted each other at trash talk
- 15:37leading up to this game. Both of these teams should be
- 15:41very proud of their fan bases. Phenomenal job.
- 15:44I think very classy. And yeah, I think that this was
- 15:47a good, you know, send off for, you know, Oregon and being able
- 15:53to win that game and go to the next round.
- 15:55They were able to do it comfortably.
- 15:57I think you're going to see both of them and Ole Miss were able
- 15:59to rest guys because they got up to big leads.
- 16:02That may make a difference because I also obviously Alabama
- 16:05and Miami both actually have maybe the the two toughest
- 16:09teams. They've got the one and two
- 16:10seeds they're playing. So definitely tough matchups in
- 16:13the second round for those teams.
- 16:15But yeah, Oregon, great job. James Madison.
- 16:19I saw a tweet which I thought was funny.
- 16:20I think I shared it to our group, James Madison, as soon as
- 16:24Oregon's second string and third string guys were in and they
- 16:27share the clip of the Get the Gap video from the 2019 LSUI.
- 16:32Just thought that was hilarious because it's like all the sudden
- 16:35they weren't dropping any passes.
- 16:37Everybody was open and they were playing loose, but it was too
- 16:40late. They were just, they were after
- 16:42the cover, clearly so. Clearly, Yeah, I that was a
- 16:47frustrating loss. Yeah, both those games were
- 16:49blowouts. I don't have a lot to add.
- 16:51Both those teams did exactly what they should have.
- 16:53The spreads were not big enough. Well, Oregon could have named
- 16:57their score. Oregon could have scored 100 in
- 16:59that game if they wanted to. Clearly took the foot off the
- 17:01gas, Daniel. That sparked a lot of
- 17:05conversation about. There's one side saying this is
- 17:10a joke. And look, someone who I followed
- 17:12for a long time and I think is one of the smartest people in
- 17:16the space is Bud Elliott. I think he's very smart.
- 17:19I think he's very intelligent. He's a statner, which I love.
- 17:22He knows ball. He's in recruiting, like, I feel
- 17:24like he knows the sport. Extremely well.
- 17:27He came up with blue chip ratio he's and we love that.
- 17:29He, he, he's a ball knower, all right, but Elliott's the best.
- 17:35I was annoyed and fans were annoyed by some of the discourse
- 17:38he's had about just how maybe for two weeks to talk about how,
- 17:41how much of a joke this is. I agree.
- 17:44My point was the people that fought for expansion, this was
- 17:47always a part of it was G6 inclusion.
- 17:51This was always a part of it. And I had someone say, oh, well,
- 17:55you know, not what you know, it was like, well, before it was 5
- 17:59automatic qualifiers. I was like, yeah, that was when
- 18:01they were like, oh, there's, you know, there used to be 5 Power 5
- 18:05conferences and there's your five qualifiers.
- 18:07I was like, yeah, the, the rule was 6 before we only had four
- 18:11power conferences. You know, G5 inclusion was
- 18:13always a part of it, which I'm fine with because this is what,
- 18:16this is what you asked for. You know, I mean, this, this is
- 18:18what you get. And the reason for it is, look,
- 18:20they're going to get sued if they don't include the group of
- 18:22five. This is a bigger system issue
- 18:24which which is we have to stop pretending that all of FBS plays
- 18:27the same sport because everyone's comeback is no there.
- 18:31You know this isn't a different football they're all FBS.
- 18:33I'm like yes, that's that exactly that is the problem that
- 18:36the problem is that we pretend that 136 teams play the same
- 18:39sport. But here's the thing.
- 18:41Bud was right. It is a safety issue.
- 18:43These players names Madison like they can practice all they want
- 18:48or against threes would smoke them they'd smoke them like you.
- 18:51You cannot replicate that size and speed in practice.
- 18:54You can't. I don't know.
- 18:56To me, Daniel, the biggest thing with the discourse to me is, is
- 18:59that there's a lot of problems of college football right now,
- 19:02despite the fact that it's probably the most popular it's
- 19:05ever been. So we better get the right
- 19:07people making decisions to fix it quickly before they lose this
- 19:11window of opportunity. I'm glad the sport's popular.
- 19:14Our podcast has grown this year as a result of it.
- 19:16That's fun. I'm glad the sport is popular.
- 19:19That brings more eyeballs into the sport that we love.
- 19:22What I don't want that to mean is that it changes that it
- 19:25doesn't look anything like what we love about it.
- 19:27And I think there are bigger changes that need to be made
- 19:29besides the playoff. Do I think the G5 these they're
- 19:32in playoff? Absolutely.
- 19:34I do. I think that is the solution.
- 19:36And I mean we we probably will do a whole podcast episode on
- 19:39what needs to change and our solution and the whole thing.
- 19:42There's been a lot of solutions on social media this weekend,
- 19:44but my biggest take on it, Daniel, is that there are things
- 19:48that need to change, like the college football schedule before
- 19:51we change the playoff. Like the and I think that you
- 19:54have to answer the question before we have a conversation
- 19:56about this is what like what is the purpose of a playoff?
- 19:59I think whenever you answer that question for me, I can then
- 20:02guide our conversation as to like where it needs to go
- 20:05because my answer to that question, Daniel, is I think the
- 20:09purpose of a playoff is to crown a national champion.
- 20:13And if that is the case, then again, that's going to inform
- 20:15what I want in a playoff. I want only the best teams.
- 20:19James Madison was not one of the best teams in college football
- 20:21this year. And I also think that means that
- 20:23I think 12's too many Jeannie's not going back in the bottle.
- 20:26We're not going less than 12, so I'm not going to waste time
- 20:29talking about that. But I don't think there have
- 20:32ever been, and there will never be 12 teams that are good enough
- 20:36or deserving enough either or to compete for a national
- 20:40championship, which is what I think the purpose of a playoff
- 20:43should be at the end of the season.
- 20:46If you disagree on what you think of what the purpose of a
- 20:49playoff is, then you probably disagree with me about format
- 20:52that that's where I start with before we go anywhere, what's
- 20:55the purpose of the playoff? Is it to crown the best team in
- 20:57the sport or is it something else?
- 20:59And that's where we probably disagree at it at the core.
- 21:02I had someone on Twitter to say to me, Daniel, like I think the
- 21:04playoffs, the greatest thing to happen in the sport in my
- 21:06lifetime. I'm like, that's fine.
- 21:07We're just going to have to disagree there because I think
- 21:09the best part of the sport is teams beating their rivals in
- 21:13October and November and September.
- 21:16And completely changing the fabric of their season.
- 21:20Exactly, and the pride you get from that, that's where I'm
- 21:22like, that's fine if you love the playoff.
- 21:23We're just going to have to disagree there.
- 21:25I think the playoff is nice. I love these games.
- 21:27I love that there's big games. I wish they were on campus this
- 21:29weekend. That's an easy change to me is
- 21:31the top 4 seeds should get the benefit of hosting a playoff
- 21:34game. The the atmospheres this
- 21:35weekend, all four were unbelievable.
- 21:38All four teams did an incredible job creating just an it's the
- 21:42best thing about the sport of games on campus.
- 21:44To me, a benefit of getting a top four seed should be a buy
- 21:47and a home playoff game. I'm McDaniel this weekend.
- 21:50Imagine Ohio State hosting Miami and the standalone game and at
- 21:55night, Buckeye fans at night. All right, you get a night game
- 21:59with Miami coming into town. Texas Tech hosts Oregon in
- 22:03Lubbock, amazing. Indiana hosting Alabama, Indiana
- 22:06hosting Alabama, very cool with Indiana being the higher seed.
- 22:09We're going to get to the game. Georgia hosting Ole Miss.
- 22:13We've seen this, but, you know, Indiana, Texas Tech, Ohio State
- 22:17and Georgia hosting playoff games will be amazing.
- 22:18That, to me, is the easiest change without getting into the
- 22:21changes in the sport that I'd love to see for even next
- 22:23season. Yeah, I mean, a lot, a lot of
- 22:26discourse this weekend. I thought, you know, it's always
- 22:28fun. This is a This is a feature not
- 22:31about your college football is debating about what should
- 22:33change and rankings and it gets people talking, which is.
- 22:36It's been part of, it's widely been one of the only subject of
- 22:40sports out there. You know, you've got all the pro
- 22:42sports have their playoffs, they've got their professionals,
- 22:45they've got their divisions and they've got equality and player
- 22:49disbursement for the most part, salary cap or whatever, you
- 22:53know, luxury tax, which isn't really fair in the base in Major
- 22:58League Baseball. But you know, you have a
- 23:00standardization. So that's obviously what's got
- 23:02to be done because all of these, like you said, are not created
- 23:05equal. And honestly, that one of my
- 23:07favorite parts of college football is that like a James
- 23:10Madison could just have for years, could just have like a
- 23:14great season. And then they could just win
- 23:18their conference and go play in a bowl game that we didn't
- 23:21attach the word meaningless to. And we could just say, oh, dude,
- 23:25James Madison went and won Fiesta Bowl or they won, you
- 23:29know, a bowl. They could be Boise State in the
- 23:31Fiesta Bowl. They could go do these fun
- 23:33things. And it means a ton.
- 23:36And it's a great story. And you don't have to look at
- 23:39them with the eyes of Hey, you're, you're you're a
- 23:44sacrificial lamb for Oregon. You know, like right now we all
- 23:47look at James Madison and I'll say, oh, they're they're trash.
- 23:50They got destroyed by Oregon. Weren't those of us who know
- 23:54Ball are not saying that, but like, for what they are, they're
- 23:57great, but they're not supposed to be on the field with Oregon,
- 24:00you know, And so let's just call it what it is.
- 24:04Let's let you know if it needs to be a group of five, group of
- 24:076, whatever playoff, that's great, whatever.
- 24:09If it needs, you know, the bowl games, you know, that's, that's,
- 24:13that's what I miss, but we'll we'll get there.
- 24:16I think you just got a they're they're still experimenting with
- 24:19everything. I hope that we there's been so
- 24:22much change and it's the last thing I'll say and we'll move on
- 24:24to the next games. There's been so much change in a
- 24:28short amount of time. For those of us who have been
- 24:31college ball fans for our whole life, you know, for so long, for
- 24:34150 years, things didn't change yet.
- 24:36Amateurism. You had all these things and
- 24:38since 2021, there's been so much change so quickly that it's
- 24:44tough to have kind of a North star of like what's true and
- 24:47what's, you know, the conferences are different, all
- 24:51this stuff's different. It's like what is, you know, the
- 24:54essence of college football? How do we keep that and preserve
- 24:57that for future generations and everything like that?
- 25:00So I if I was picking one thing, if you were like Daniel, you
- 25:04only get one thing to do, I would select a commissioner and
- 25:09have that person have to answer and guide what happens because I
- 25:15think you could start, but there's no central governing
- 25:18body. And so I think that's probably
- 25:21largest issue right now. But we will, we've teased it.
- 25:24We're going to have that in offseason pod.
- 25:26Don't worry, we'll get to the bottom of it.
- 25:28We'll have all of your favorite, you know, scenarios of what
- 25:31needs to happen. But dude, we got some ball to
- 25:34talk. So let's jump in.
- 25:36Let's go move on to the quarterfinals and get, you know,
- 25:39my appetite's been wet. Let's let's let's start eating.
- 25:43The stand alone game on New Year's Eve.
- 25:48We've got Ohio State in Miami in the Cotton Bowl.
- 25:52Yeah, Cotton Bowl here, Daniel. Last year, all four teams, the
- 25:56first round by lost. Ohio State was the benefactor of
- 25:59one of those. So the only team in the top 4
- 26:02now that did this last year as far as had the layoff and has it
- 26:05again is Georgia. So curious to see how Ohio State
- 26:10is on the other side of that now is different.
- 26:12Miami has some momentum coming off of the win at Texas saying
- 26:15it, they're going back to Texas. Look in a Dome stadium on, you
- 26:19know, on field turf. Ohio State opened higher than
- 26:25this, but they are a 9 1/2 point favorite over Miami.
- 26:28They're the favorite to win the whole thing.
- 26:30Daniel, who do you like to win the Cotton Bowl and advance to
- 26:33the semi final? Yeah.
- 26:35So last week I think we said this was the most confident we
- 26:39had been so far this year. I think that was because of some
- 26:42of the matchups, how they were. This, I think because I have,
- 26:47you know, stood over this for a while now, I feel pretty
- 26:50confident. I mean, I think Ohio State wins
- 26:52this game. Obviously, it's spoiler alert,
- 26:54They're one of the best teams in the country.
- 26:56I think that you kind of have, and I don't want to downgrade
- 27:00what we saw for Miami just because they weren't a heavy
- 27:04offensive team. I do think that there's a
- 27:06certain amount of momentum that Miami has from winning that game
- 27:09on the road and feeling good about themselves.
- 27:12But I also think there's enough doubt in their passing game
- 27:15after, you know, just not doing it.
- 27:17Like compare it to a pitcher in baseball getting the yips and
- 27:21kind of having to like throw strikes and get a get a guy out.
- 27:25I feel like they walked a lot of guys, but they were able to, you
- 27:28know, get out of that game late. So I that's how I feel about
- 27:32Miami. So I don't know if they
- 27:33necessarily carry a ton of momentum defensively.
- 27:36I think they do. But this Ohio State team
- 27:38defensively has been a nightmare.
- 27:40But I'll say this outside of the conference championship game and
- 27:46maybe their first game of the year, this may be the best team
- 27:49Ohio State has played all year, which we're in the playoff.
- 27:51That should happen. So I'm, I'm excited to see Ohio
- 27:54State meet this challenge of this great defense, this great
- 27:57pass rush. This is our offensive line have
- 27:59enough. It's a 9 1/2 point spread.
- 28:03I'm I'm just kind of in on Ohio State on this one.
- 28:07I think they're going to they're going to be well rested.
- 28:09They're going to run the ball, they're going to be able to
- 28:11play, you know, defense and I think they come up with a couple
- 28:16turnovers because of that. I think just having that many
- 28:20additional possessions over Miami.
- 28:23I like the the double digit win. I think 10 points is kind of
- 28:27right at the number. It's a good line by Vegas.
- 28:29I would probably flex it up to 12 or 14 as far as my personal
- 28:34like, you know how how I think the game's going to play, but
- 28:37I'm laying 10 1/2 or laying 9 1/2.
- 28:39I'll take that point. Laying 9 1/2 with the Buckeyes.
- 28:43Give me a higher state. Then you I again, this is me.
- 28:45I'm trying to be a person of the mobile with Miami because I
- 28:49walked game against Texas and I'm thinking, you know, if they
- 28:52play defense like that man, like they can give people the higher
- 28:56state. We saw Indiana do it.
- 28:57This is where Daniel the coming into the playoff and Josh Pace
- 29:02said this too. And I I completely agree.
- 29:03It was if Ohio State looks vulnerable, there are several
- 29:05teams that can win this whole thing.
- 29:07If they don't, they're probably going to run away with it.
- 29:10And they looked vulnerable and lost and and they hadn't really
- 29:12looked vulnerable all season. And so I'm like watching the
- 29:15struggle against a team that plays good defense makes me
- 29:18think Miami can stay in this game in the 9 1/2 is too many
- 29:21points. Regardless, I think Ohio State
- 29:23wins. I think that Miami offensively
- 29:27had two buttons that compress. It's running the ball with
- 29:29Fletcher and it's getting the ball to Malachi Tony.
- 29:33They don't really have a threat at receiver outside of Malachi
- 29:36Tony. It's kind of been him or bust in
- 29:39the past game, especially recently and they fed him a ton
- 29:42in the Texas A&M game. Which version of Carson Beck do
- 29:45we get? Beck looked off in that game,
- 29:48but again, high winds. So he he played his best ball in
- 29:51November. Carson Beck did coming in into
- 29:53the playoff. That being said, Daniel, I'm
- 29:56laying 9 1/2. I think Ohio State has too many
- 29:58ways to win. My only concern the 9 1/2 is
- 30:02that I think this will be a low scoring game.
- 30:05These are two very good defenses.
- 30:06I don't know how many points Miami's going to score against
- 30:09Ohio State's defense. I think Ohio State's going to
- 30:11score more. But Daniel, like I wouldn't be
- 30:13shocked if this were 2110, like 24 to 13, 17 to 7.
- 30:21Like that would not surprise me if it's that low scoring of a
- 30:25game. But I do think on the that both
- 30:27defenses are good. Ohio State has several more ways
- 30:30to win on offense. They've got multiple threats of
- 30:33receiver, a really good tight end room, a really good running
- 30:36backroom and a better quarterback.
- 30:38They have more ways to score. I think they scored just enough.
- 30:42I do think it's like that 24 to 14 type of game, low scoring
- 30:49defensive battle. And maybe it's they even break
- 30:51it open late. You know, it's a it's a 1714
- 30:54game and finally a run breaks off kind of like Miami to the
- 30:57Texas saying it. I think there's just a little
- 30:59bit more points than in that game because Ohio State's
- 31:01offense is much more dynamic and their defense is better.
- 31:05I think there's a reason they're putting 9 1/2 on this.
- 31:07Give me the Buckeyes to win and cover and to advance to the
- 31:10Fiesta Bowl here in a few weeks. So you and I both on the
- 31:15Buckeyes in this one. All right, we move to Daniel,
- 31:21the Orange Bowl, Texas Tech and Oregon.
- 31:26This should be a very good game. The lowest point spread of the
- 31:29four quarterfinal games, 1 1/2, is the line, which is
- 31:33interesting for a lot of reasons to me.
- 31:35Daniel, let's dive into it. I honestly would have thought
- 31:38Oregon would have been a bigger favorite.
- 31:39Texas Tech opened up as the 1 1/2 point favorite.
- 31:42It has moved to an Oregon 1 1/2. These are two good football
- 31:45teams. Daniel.
- 31:45This might be the best game of the weekend.
- 31:48Who do you like in the Orange Bowl?
- 31:51Yeah, I agree. This is 1.
- 31:52I I mean, I'm just glad to have this matchup.
- 31:55This is 2 teams that haven't had like they don't have any common
- 32:00opponents. There's not, you know, we've
- 32:02seen a lot of rematches. We've seen some teams that we
- 32:05have a really good feel for their style of play.
- 32:07I feel like this is just a fun matchup because you're really
- 32:11going to get to see just two, two juggernauts go head to head.
- 32:16They both have had, you know, some help with their schedule
- 32:18where it may be at times it was a lull and they were able to
- 32:21kind of not have to expel as much energy.
- 32:25There's been parts where they've had big time matchups.
- 32:28It's a really good barometer also on, you know, Big 10 versus
- 32:33the Big 12 as far as, you know, conference strength, that kind
- 32:36of thing, 'cause you've got essentially you could say the
- 32:39class of both conferences. Obviously there's three big time
- 32:42Big 10 teams in this playoffs still, so you know, any one of
- 32:47them. But this match up in, in
- 32:49particular Oregon just with their pedigree with they've been
- 32:55good for several years now. Dan Lanning has been to this
- 32:58spot. He's been the spot as a
- 33:00coordinator. He's been in the spot as a head
- 33:02coach. I, I'm, I'm leaning that way.
- 33:05I've I've looked at this game up and down.
- 33:08I think Texas Tech, one thing that they benefit from, I mean,
- 33:12Dickey running the ball being over 1000 yards this year, 14
- 33:14touchdowns. I they're more balanced, I
- 33:18guess, statistically speaking, than Oregon.
- 33:21But you know that I just like Oregon coming off of this.
- 33:25You know, they they had a game, so they were able to, you know,
- 33:29rest up for the championship week, have a game close to this.
- 33:32And then, you know, you really get that game plan out against
- 33:37James Madison early. Rest some guys even in that
- 33:40game. So they're not, you know, coming
- 33:43into this one banged up. They didn't have to expel a
- 33:46whole lot of energy. I'm saying a lot of words here.
- 33:49Look, it's a 1 1/2 point spread. I like Oregon to make the
- 33:53championship game. We talked about that one with
- 33:55our bracket. I think they win.
- 33:57It's a 1 1/2 point spread. I'm going to keep it, keep it
- 33:59100. Let's just see what happens.
- 34:01I like the pedigree on this side.
- 34:03I think Texas Tech, because they just started spending money,
- 34:08they're going to be in this more often.
- 34:09And, you know, I think you'll see there'll be more comfortable
- 34:12next year perhaps in this spot. I think Oregon wins.
- 34:15I think they win by a touchdown, but 1 1/2 points, I'll lay that
- 34:19with Oregon. Give me the Ducks.
- 34:20Daniel, it is hard for me to there's two teams that are left
- 34:25that it's hard for me to wrap my head around the like that not
- 34:29just they've won a lot of games that they're they're, they're
- 34:32legitimately good. And if you look at power
- 34:34ratings, just legitimately good football team.
- 34:36That's that's Texas Tech in Indiana.
- 34:37We've talked about a little bit with Indiana, but in Texas Tech
- 34:40has definitely got more dues than they used to get.
- 34:42But it's still hard to comprehend.
- 34:45It's not hard to comprehend a rush like this one in the Big
- 34:4712. I'll say, yeah, it's hard for me
- 34:49to get my head around them contending for a national
- 34:51championship. And, you know, friend of the
- 34:54show David Cobb picked Texas Tech to win it all.
- 34:56And whenever we filled out our bracket, I, I mean, I gave it a
- 34:59really good look because I'm like, look, I'm trying to take,
- 35:03you know, my P2 glasses off, my blue chip ratio glasses off.
- 35:07And I'm trying to look at this and be like, OK, Texas Tech is
- 35:10really good. Like, what do you see?
- 35:11And the question I asked him is the question I ask here, which
- 35:14is what is the best defense that Texas Tech has faced all season?
- 35:19And the answer is BYU. And they're barely a top 25
- 35:23level defense. And Oregon's a top five defense
- 35:26in the countries. To me, that's the mismatch in
- 35:28this game. Daniel is, I think Texas Tech
- 35:30defense is very good. Now, again, Oregon, we far and
- 35:33away the best offense they faced.
- 35:35But I do think they have a stout defense, especially up front,
- 35:38which is what you need to contend in some of these games,
- 35:40right, is if you can get pressure on the quarterback and
- 35:42stop the run with your defensive line, your front 7, your
- 35:44linebackers, that will help your past game in your corners
- 35:48because Oregon's got a really good receiving room.
- 35:50But on the other side, I just, I wonder if there's going to be
- 35:54some shell shock. I mean, Texas Tech has blown
- 35:56everybody out. They've played this year.
- 35:58Whenever you play a team like Oregon that has a top five level
- 36:01defense, I don't know that Texas Tech has a dynamic enough
- 36:05offense to contend in this game. And that's where the spread
- 36:09really surprises me. And I still think as good as
- 36:13power ratings are nowadays and I know their opponent adjusted, I
- 36:17still think there's a handicap here of what happens when a team
- 36:21faces a team that they've seen nothing like it all season.
- 36:24Because that's what's going to happen in this game with Texas
- 36:26Tech, where it's not like, I mean, Ohio State has seen
- 36:30Indiana, right? They've seen what a top five
- 36:33level team looks like. They face and they lost.
- 36:36It was a close game. They've seen it so that you you
- 36:38can calibrate like OK, that's what this level of team looks
- 36:41like. Texas Tech has not had that this
- 36:44year. So I I think it's hard for me to
- 36:46imagine them walk into a playoff game seeing this for the first
- 36:49time and then winning when this is the first time on the stage.
- 36:52Oregon now has playoff experience under their belt.
- 36:55Lay the 1 1/2 give me Oregon. I will say the angle though, I
- 36:58did, I don't know if you did this or not.
- 36:59I am looking at these games fresh with new data that we have
- 37:02from the first round and I'm not just going to stick, It's not
- 37:05necessarily going to stick to my playoff bracket from before.
- 37:09So if you're listening to me saying we already have their
- 37:11whole bracket, we are looking at these games fresh and and we're
- 37:14picking to get the spread obviously.
- 37:15So he knows we might stick to our bracket, we might not.
- 37:19More to come. Let's go to the Rose Bowl, one
- 37:22of my favorite college football games all year.
- 37:25I've made my opinion known that I think we should change the
- 37:27calendar and make the national championship game just be the
- 37:29Rose Bowl. Play it on January 1st at 4:00
- 37:32PM every year. I think that should be our
- 37:34championship. New Year's Day, 4:00 PM.
- 37:36You don't have to call it the national championship.
- 37:38Let's call it the Rose Bowl game, and that's our
- 37:41championship. I've never been, but I have a
- 37:44lot of respect for the Rose Bowl, as do you, Daniel.
- 37:46We were talking about the pretentiousness of it is a
- 37:49feature. I love it because they treat it.
- 37:52They treat their own game with a lot of respect, right?
- 37:55Like the Masters, the Master, Augusta National treats the
- 37:58Masters as if it's the greatest golf tournament in the world and
- 38:01that it is an honor to host their fans and that their fans
- 38:04get to experience something special.
- 38:06And it is. And they treat it that way,
- 38:08which is what makes it so special.
- 38:09And it, you know, it makes it better and then the fans take it
- 38:12special and that feeds into, you know, it's, it's it's a it's a
- 38:15cycle in a good way. the Rose Bowl is this for me.
- 38:17I really want to go at some point where my Rose Bowl hat.
- 38:20We get a big 10 SEC matchup in the Rose Bowl with two teams
- 38:23that wear the same color, Crimson in Indiana and Alabama.
- 38:28Interesting uniform matchup because it when it because it's
- 38:31the same color, it'll just be high contrast, you know, which I
- 38:35didn't even mention uniform matchups.
- 38:36I'm going to come back to that in a second, Daniel.
- 38:38Yeah. But this should be a good game.
- 38:41Indiana 6 1/2 point favorite Daniel, Who do you like in the
- 38:46Rose Bowl? Yeah, I mean, I don't know if
- 38:47you've looked this up, Jacob, but do you know how many times
- 38:50Indiana has been to the Rose Bowl?
- 38:52Oof, is it once before or never? They have once before I thought
- 38:57it was never. I thought this was their first
- 38:59time and so I've been saying that but I just googled myself
- 39:02to keep myself honest so that's smart.
- 39:05That's smart. First time was 1967 season 68
- 39:10Rose Bowl. The cardiac kids is what they
- 39:12called them, which would be a fitting name for Mendoza's.
- 39:14You know, touchdown against Penn State felt very cardiac kid.
- 39:19How many times would you say Alabama has been to the Rose
- 39:21Bowl? It's obviously not traditional
- 39:23for an SEC team to go to the Rose Bowl is why I'm asking the
- 39:26question. And obviously usually used to
- 39:29eat traditionally. Of course, Big 10, PAC 10, PAC
- 39:3212, eventually. OK.
- 39:35How many times the? Rose Bowl venue or like there's
- 39:39a they have. Played in the Rose Bowl game.
- 39:41In the Rose Bowl game, Yeah, so. I would get OK.
- 39:45They've done it twice in the playoff.
- 39:47No three times in the playoff era.
- 39:49Two or three 10/10 is my guess. And it's including to this one,
- 39:54so you say 10. Yeah, 10.
- 39:56That's a great guess. It's 9.
- 39:58Yeah, dude, you're right there, right there.
- 40:01So that's just, I just wanted to paint that picture for
- 40:03everybody. Obviously, if you listen to this
- 40:05podcast, you love Ball. You know, Ball.
- 40:09We're talking about Alabama and Indiana.
- 40:10You're talking about story program and new kid on the
- 40:13block. So someone who's not supposed to
- 40:15be here, someone who, you know, Becks to be here.
- 40:20And even if it's the Rose Bowl, Alabama knows their way around,
- 40:23you know? Caitlin de Boer as a head coach
- 40:26has been to the Rose Bowl more times in Indiana, you know, and
- 40:29he was a head coach at Indiana. It's there's a lot of fun things
- 40:32in this game. You mentioned the color
- 40:34contrast. That's going to be interesting
- 40:36to watch. Obviously the coaching where you
- 40:39know, Caitlin de Boer coach that like Kurt Cignetti coached at
- 40:43Alabama. So you've got some some fun
- 40:47there. And then it's just fun that
- 40:49Indiana is the big dog. They're the favorite in this
- 40:53game over Alabama. You see that script A, it's
- 40:55weird to pick against them. I am certainly not going to do
- 40:58it. I'm picking Alabama in this
- 40:59game. I picked them in the bracket.
- 41:01I'm staying true to myself. And watching them in the first
- 41:04round, I felt almost validated in my assumptions.
- 41:09I was thinking Alabama could get up off the mat.
- 41:11After getting ran over by Georgia in the SEC championship
- 41:14game. Ty Simpson did not look like
- 41:17himself in the first part of the game against Oklahoma.
- 41:21It kind of looked the same way. I got worried.
- 41:23But then you saw a kind of an awakening.
- 41:25Some receivers, you know, just kind of emerged and it was, it
- 41:29kind of became OK. You could be comfortable with
- 41:32Alabama and Caitlin De Bourg in. They're still a extremely
- 41:35talented team. And yes, going into this game,
- 41:38it's a 6 1/2 point spread and it's favored.
- 41:41I'm absolutely going to take those points.
- 41:43So that's all I have to do. But I'm going to tell you,
- 41:45Alabama's going to win this game outright.
- 41:48They've had exactly what they needed to, you know, get rid of
- 41:51the rust. They've played a lot of football
- 41:53because they had to play an extra game and, you know, they
- 41:57lost and had to play in the first round on the road.
- 42:01So I think there's something to be said of their toughness.
- 42:04I think that's going to come out in this game.
- 42:06I really try not to minimize Indiana.
- 42:08They've been phenomenal. This isn't like a Cinderella
- 42:11story that's coming to an end. This is going to be two
- 42:14juggernauts coming, you know, to do battle in the greatest venue
- 42:18we have in college football. It's just the championship
- 42:22pedigree of Alabama is going to be too much for Indiana for four
- 42:26quarters. I don't even have Alabama
- 42:28necessary blowing them out. I have it as a tight win, but a
- 42:33win is a win if they're within 6 1/2 points.
- 42:36I'm still taking this as a win myself, but Alabama wins
- 42:40outright. I'm going to stop talking and
- 42:41let you have some meat on the spoon, Jacob.
- 42:45I do want to mention real quick as far as uniform matchups go,
- 42:48the first two games should be excellent depending on what
- 42:50Texas Tech wears. Oregon, just you know, they've
- 42:54been really good with her your broad uniform.
- 42:56So I'm not I'm not worried about that with Oregon.
- 42:58Texas Tech, I know they like to do the the black, red, black.
- 43:03I'd love to do some black, black, white, maybe some red
- 43:06would look good. But regardless, should be a good
- 43:08uniform matchup. Then Ohio State and Miami, I
- 43:10will say I hope Ohio State brings back the home heritage
- 43:14stripe jerseys. Daniel I I've gone, I have a
- 43:19different take than I used to have.
- 43:21I think it's a better look than their regular home jersey, but I
- 43:23like that they save it for the playoff.
- 43:26My one change would be I don't love the black numbers on the
- 43:28shoulders. You'll have to look to something
- 43:30like a light on screen here for us.
- 43:31But their haters jerseys has that like Gray stripe that they
- 43:36typically save for post season play on the home jerseys.
- 43:39They wore the heritage of wagers using the natty last year.
- 43:42But I hope Ohio State wears those at home and then Miami
- 43:44just wear the all white or green pants.
- 43:46Just don't do orange pants with the red, but it won't look as
- 43:48good. Yeah, the Rose Bowl should be
- 43:49OK. That's the same color red, so
- 43:51not a lot of contrast there. But the Rose Bowl itself is
- 43:55gonna look beautiful. Something you and I talked about
- 43:57how the uniform matchup looks on the field is also important,
- 44:01like the color of the grass and stuff.
- 44:03Everything looks good on there in the Rose Bowl.
- 44:04And that grass is I get. That's why I compare it to
- 44:06Augustine. Out of 10.
- 44:08Yeah, 10 out of 10. The field design's perfect.
- 44:10That's something we should do in the offseason.
- 44:11I want to I want to do a ranking of like fields.
- 44:14How good fields look. Plus, you're talking about
- 44:17lighting, you know, in Norman and how it's a little darker and
- 44:20everything. Well, Rose Bowl, the lighting's
- 44:22always perfect because it's perfect.
- 44:24Picturesque. Starting the day afternoon.
- 44:26Exactly so. I love it.
- 44:29All right, the Rose Bowl, Daniel, I walked away from
- 44:33Alabama's win over Oklahoma in prison at the moment.
- 44:36I texted our group chat and I said not me thinking Alabama is
- 44:39going to beat Indiana here in a couple weeks.
- 44:42And I'm like, man, I just, it is so hard for me to look past, you
- 44:47know, depending on where you look, the first or second or
- 44:49third best roster in college football as far as the level of
- 44:53talent of the players, yeah, they're in a playoff setting.
- 44:56That's what we always said is like when an 8 or a nine seed
- 44:59wins it or a ten seed wins it. Ohio State last year, it's going
- 45:02to be in Ohio State and Alabama. A Georgia that lost a couple
- 45:06games, got hot late and they've got this roster that can go and
- 45:09beat anybody, right? I don't think that's Alabama
- 45:12this year, but they at least fit that build.
- 45:15I'm laying the points to Indiana.
- 45:16I I thought a lot about it. I walked away saying I'm at
- 45:19least going to take the points. I'm laying the points in
- 45:21Indiana. I'm trying to trust the
- 45:23performances that I've seen 2025 on the field and Indiana has
- 45:27looked like the best team in the country in 2025 and including if
- 45:31I'm taking the Oklahoma game into account.
- 45:33For Alabama, my red flag is they gave up over 400 yards to an
- 45:38Oklahoma offense that had done nothing the second-half of the
- 45:42season. And I know, but tears thumb was
- 45:43better, but the way they were able to run the ball and Alabama
- 45:47has Alabama has struggled to run the ball year and they've
- 45:50struggled to stop the rental year.
- 45:51And they're going up against a very stout Indiana defense that
- 45:55shut down Ohio State and held them to what was it 10 points in
- 45:59the Big 10 championship. On the other side, they're going
- 46:02up against the number one pass offense in the country, number
- 46:05six offense, you know, opponent adjusted for your Archer play in
- 46:09the country. I think Indiana's going to win
- 46:11and cover here. I think that they've they've
- 46:13been the better team all season. I'm trying to just I've I've
- 46:18admitted it's hard for me to look into Indiana and trust it,
- 46:21but I'm trying to go with what I've seen in 2025 and trust it.
- 46:25Lay the points with Indiana can be Indiana to win and cover in
- 46:29the Rose Bowl. I like this game to be like 27
- 46:33to like 17 ish. I don't know if Amy's going to
- 46:38be able to score enough to win. If they they hold Indiana 27,
- 46:43that'll be impressive because that's about what Oklahoma did
- 46:45in Indiana's offense is a lot better.
- 46:49Give me Indiana to winning covering the Rose Bowl, man.
- 46:53That brings us to New Year's evening, not Eve, but 8:00 PM
- 46:57New Year's Day. We go to the Sugar Bowl.
- 47:00I like the Sugar Bowl, think it's a good venue there in New
- 47:04Orleans. You know, we grew up SEC fans,
- 47:07so always tied to the Sugar Bowl being kind of the big bowl game
- 47:10for for the SEC schools and Big 12 traditionally.
- 47:14Daniel, we get an SEC on SEC matchup in New Orleans.
- 47:18It's a rematch from earlier in the season, Georgia and Ole
- 47:22Miss. So we expected to be here when
- 47:24the bracket came out. We get it now a Lane Kiffin less
- 47:28Ole Miss Georgia 6 1/2 point favorite.
- 47:32This was 4335. The first game of the first time
- 47:35around. Daniel high scoring affair with
- 47:38the only stops came in the fourth quarter.
- 47:41Only a couple of punts in the game.
- 47:44High scoring. That means the spreads about
- 47:47where that game ended last time, about a touchdown in favor of
- 47:50Georgia. Who do you like to win and cover
- 47:53in the Sugar Bowl? Because you mentioned that this
- 47:55is ACC venue and there's two SEC teams.
- 47:59I mean, I just would like to know.
- 48:00I wanted to see how many times each of these teams has played.
- 48:04Obviously, your perception would be probably Georgia has played
- 48:08plenty more. You want to take a guess on
- 48:11either one. I do think it's Georgia more we
- 48:14can we go on number of appearances.
- 48:16Yeah, number of appearances. Georgia is more My initial
- 48:19thought was they probably. Had the amount.
- 48:21If I was guessing, but I did look it up and it was
- 48:23interesting. Is it more than 10?
- 48:27Both teams have more than 10. OK, OK.
- 48:30That was just. Surprising.
- 48:31I mean, is it is Georgia like like 20?
- 48:34No. It's Georgia's got 13.
- 48:38Well, this has got 11. So I saw Ole Miss with 11.
- 48:42I expected to see Georgia at 22. I mean, it's not something I've
- 48:45kept, you know, close track of, but you know, usually it's tied
- 48:49to winning SEC championships. I think Georgia has won, I think
- 48:53was it 17 SEC championships, something like that.
- 48:58So you know, but Yep, that is that's the number.
- 49:02So 13 for Georgia, 11 for Ole Miss.
- 49:06Speaking of uniform matchups, this one's going to be
- 49:08interesting. I like, you know, Georgia
- 49:09wearing the red. Ole Miss is probably wearing
- 49:12white, I would think. I don't think they're going to
- 49:14do a color, but I guess they technically could.
- 49:18But yeah, apparently the reason they chose the Navy blue for the
- 49:21last game was because that was Lane Kiffin's least favorite of
- 49:24the sword on the street, at least, which I do like the Navy
- 49:26blue look. I think it will look good.
- 49:28It's. A classic.
- 49:29It's classy. But we're going to get
- 49:31essentially the same look that we got in Athens because George
- 49:34was at home. Of course, fun rematches are
- 49:37always interesting because you want to glean what you had from
- 49:41the first game. This one's, you know, take it a
- 49:45step up and in that, you know, one team doesn't have their head
- 49:49coach. Most of the time you would just
- 49:50chalk it up and say, OK, well, OK, Ole Miss doesn't have Lane
- 49:53Kiffin. This is easy.
- 49:55You know, George is going to win big, but you know, Lane Kiffin
- 49:59was not the sole play caller. Charlie Weis junior did call the
- 50:02plays. You know, you still have the
- 50:04defensive, pretty much both Staffs completely in place.
- 50:07The difference is, you know, of course, you don't have a a staff
- 50:11solely focused on this. You've got staff, you know,
- 50:14partially focused on this, partially recruiting for LSU
- 50:18because they've moved on. You also have the one thing I
- 50:22thought especially in this matchup, because we talked about
- 50:25matchups, specifically the matchup with Ole Miss in
- 50:29Georgia, bring it down to the head coaches, You've got Lane
- 50:33Kiffin and Kirby Smart. They know each other so well.
- 50:35These guys are close friends back to the years at Bama, but
- 50:39they both have immense respect for one another.
- 50:42They are good friends. They have their text group that
- 50:45I'd love to be a part of, but I'd love to see, you know, get a
- 50:48glimpse of what's going on in that, in that Sabin tree text
- 50:51group that they have flaunted before.
- 50:53But these guys, because they know each other so well, it's
- 50:56almost that. I think Lane gives an edge that
- 51:02can't necessarily be quantified in XS and OS.
- 51:04He knows Kirby well and he knows what Kirby likes to do.
- 51:09He knows what Saban likes to do. And because of that, even if he
- 51:12didn't have the guys that could play with him, he knows kind of
- 51:16how their mind works. And you hear about the the
- 51:18Kiffin whistle, you won't be hearing that in this game that
- 51:22becomes famous where, you know, he he whistles to get his
- 51:25quarterback's attention to change something.
- 51:27Or if he knows exactly what they're in or what they're going
- 51:30to do, he'll whistle so he can give, you know, a note to the
- 51:33quarterback that's not there. Because of that specifically, I
- 51:38feel better about Georgia. I don't want to just wash it all
- 51:40and say, oh, they don't have their head coach.
- 51:42I think Ole Miss is still an extremely formidable team.
- 51:45And I think specific matchups, I think they could win and advance
- 51:49in the playoffs. I just think that running into
- 51:52Georgia, where they are and the way Georgia has played
- 51:56defensively since the Ole Miss game, Ole Miss was able to get
- 52:00all those yards on them. Now I think Georgia has found
- 52:03their footing. Glenn Schumann has gotten more
- 52:07exotic with the blitz scheme and better with disguising certain
- 52:12things and not necessarily that he's become better.
- 52:14The players have gotten better over the course of the season.
- 52:17They've grown up with the Georgia defensive back.
- 52:20We've seen them just grow and, you know, become a strength of
- 52:24the team now, whereas early in the season they were liability.
- 52:27So all of those things together, I think are going to contribute
- 52:31to Georgia playing better defense in this game.
- 52:34I think Georgia because of that does not, you know, maybe have
- 52:38the offensive game that they had against Ole Miss as well.
- 52:41I think they're probably a dialed down version of that.
- 52:43They've not been as electric offensively, but Georgia is a
- 52:48very complimentary football, very geared towards
- 52:51complimentary football. That's how Kirby wants to play
- 52:54things. I think that's how it's going to
- 52:56go. A 6 1/2 point spread.
- 52:58I think Georgia wins this comfortably.
- 53:00I don't think that it's a snoozer of a game.
- 53:03I think that, you know, Ole Miss is in this game till the very
- 53:07end. But I, I think you'd probably
- 53:08see a A2 touchdown victory, maybe something along the lines
- 53:12where Georgia is not ever in danger of necessarily losing
- 53:18lead in the second-half, I'll say, where they've always at
- 53:21least got a touchdown lead. And basically they're trading
- 53:23possessions. Maybe Georgia goes and scores,
- 53:25almost comes right back down. I could see that happening.
- 53:29But I think Georgia wins comfortably in that sense.
- 53:32So give me the dogs, lay the points.
- 53:34And Daniel, if we just copy and paste the first game, that's why
- 53:37the spread is where it is, right?
- 53:38We've seen this game. Georgia was able to get more
- 53:40stops than Ole Miss, I think. Like what's the same from the
- 53:43first game? I think the same is that both
- 53:47teams are going to be able to score.
- 53:49I think what's different is I agree that both defenses have
- 53:51gotten better. I think Georgia's defense from
- 53:53the from the really from the fourth quarter of this game on
- 53:56Georgia's defense was different the rest of the year.
- 54:00And two, I mean, I think Chambliss is probably this.
- 54:02This was his first Rd. start. Yeah.
- 54:05Chambliss is a lot more comfortable in this offense.
- 54:08I think if there is energy behind the like being Kiffin
- 54:13less and like the we're going to show him, I think that probably
- 54:17expires after the first quarter of this game.
- 54:19I think at home you get to beat up on 2 lane.
- 54:23I think about the second quarter it's going to be OK like that.
- 54:26That kind of wave is over with. The biggest difference that's.
- 54:30Possibly split, not to interrupt you.
- 54:32I think it's also possibly split because the coaches, like all
- 54:35those offensive coaches are leaving too.
- 54:37So I don't think there can be like a unified galvanization
- 54:40right where I agree with you. If it otherwise, I feel like it
- 54:43would be, hey, we're US against the world.
- 54:46Well, it's US against this team, this, this game.
- 54:50But all these guys are, you know, 1 foot out the door.
- 54:53Sorry, you continue. No, but to me, the difference of
- 54:56this game, Daniel, is Georgia outrushed Ole Miss in the last
- 55:00game, 221 to 88. They were still able to play
- 55:03their game even in a shootout. And I think that's the
- 55:05difference in this game. I think that Georgia, as bad as
- 55:08the defense was early on in the year, they committed to stopping
- 55:11the run and they stopped every team from running the ball and
- 55:14they've committed to running the ball and that created a lot of
- 55:16balance with their offense that I don't think Ole Miss is going
- 55:18to be able to stop. Gunner Stockton had his his best
- 55:21game of the of the season in this game against Ole Miss.
- 55:24You could argue maybe the Texas game as well.
- 55:26He's been kind of off since the Georgia Tech game against, you
- 55:29know, he was kind of off in the SEC Championship too.
- 55:32He was efficient but not as explosive as he was in this Ole
- 55:35Miss game. I do wonder if maybe facing the
- 55:38Ole Miss defense can give Gunner Stockton some more confidence.
- 55:41I I do think Georgia wins in coverage, but I think the
- 55:43biggest difference in the game is that Georgia can stop the run
- 55:46and runs the ball in an elite clip.
- 55:48And it's why in the first matchup they held the ball for
- 55:4937 minutes compared to Ole Miss is 22.
- 55:52So I think that's a big difference in this game.
- 55:54I think Georgia wins in coverage.
- 55:56I didn't think I'll miss score some points.
- 55:57I think this could be like a 31 for a game.
- 55:59Not as high scoring as the first time around, but George's pass
- 56:02rush has come on where Chambliss was able to sit back and kind of
- 56:06toss it all over the place on the 1st 3/4 against Georgia.
- 56:09The first time. I do think that's a difference
- 56:11too, is the Georgia pass rush has come on where they're start.
- 56:14They're starting to get a lot of pressure rushing 4 guys and then
- 56:17you get into third and long and you start to get defensive play
- 56:21calls that Georgia was not doing early in the year.
- 56:23You start to get stemming up front, you start to get
- 56:26simulated pressure, you start to get 6 guys in the line.
- 56:29You don't know who's dropping back and who's going to wear and
- 56:31you start to get stunts in the defensive line.
- 56:32It it's a lot of stuff Georgia was not doing early because they
- 56:35played a ton of young players and I don't think the coaching
- 56:38staff trusted the players to execute that early in the year.
- 56:42If they had to simplify it now, I think you're getting a more
- 56:44exotic version of Georgia's defense.
- 56:46I don't know if all miss is going to be able to keep up
- 56:48scoring with Georgia, even if Georgia's scoring is more
- 56:51limited to. So I think Georgia has more ways
- 56:53to win. I think they win and cover.
- 56:55It's 6 1/2 under a touchdown. Yeah, I like Georgia by about a
- 56:59touchdown this game. I always took the points because
- 57:01I do think almost of being overlooked a little bit.
- 57:03But I think you could also say is George being overlooked a
- 57:06little bit as far as I'm not hearing a lot of conversation
- 57:09nationally about Georgia winning this whole thing.
- 57:12So we'll see. Interesting off the field stuff
- 57:15with Georgia having played in this game last year, lost the
- 57:19game obviously, but there was the terror attack in New Orleans
- 57:21last year. Kirby Smart lost his dad in New
- 57:23Orleans last year. I, I am curious if that has an
- 57:26effect, good or bad on the team of this is the Smart family's
- 57:29first time back in New Orleans since that all happened.
- 57:32But Kirby Smart talked about in this press conference of just
- 57:34like, hey, you know, we'll deal with that off the field.
- 57:37And by the time the game kicks off, he'll be so busy that it'll
- 57:39be focused on the game at that point.
- 57:41But something to keep an eye on, talk about.
- 57:44Yeah, this move the game last year that was I you know those
- 57:47things, this a whole day. So yeah, that changed kind of
- 57:52the the essence of it. And you know, you talked about
- 57:56coaches that are returning to their spot.
- 57:58This Georgia is the only one that's returning to the hosting
- 58:01position in this spot. So they're if you want to stay
- 58:06used to it or have a beat on it. And then of course, Gunner
- 58:09Stockton is the only returning quarterback to, you know, who
- 58:12started a playoff game. So something else to kind of
- 58:14just keep in your back pocket as you go to the second round where
- 58:18all these teams are getting more and more, these games get more
- 58:20and more competitive. So uniforms, Daniel almost don't
- 58:24mess this up. This is very easy.
- 58:26They asked her fans to wear powder blue, so I'm assuming
- 58:28they're wearing a powder blue helmet.
- 58:29Powder helmet, white jersey, grey pants don't mess it up.
- 58:31Very easy. Very easy elite uniform mash up.
- 58:34If we do that, Daniel, if there's a game we picked that
- 58:37you're least confident in your pick, which one is it?
- 58:40I would say my least confident pick is Oregon and Texas Tech
- 58:45just because I, I feel like of course it's just a 1 1/2 point
- 58:48spread. But I think it's one of those
- 58:50things I just, there's not a lot of data of common opponents that
- 58:54I could look at and be like, oh, look, this points to, you know,
- 58:59of course, because this, you know, the associative property
- 59:02always works by being like, Oh yeah, because of this, this will
- 59:05happen. But at least just getting a
- 59:08look. So I, I really feel like it's
- 59:09going to be eye opening when we see those two teams come out.
- 59:12Mine would be the Rose Bowl and I'll say this point because I
- 59:15was thinking about with Georgia in the not that it won't be
- 59:19done, but it's hard for me to trust A-Team that's never been
- 59:22in the spot to all of a sudden go and do it.
- 59:25And Indiana has a playoff experience last year.
- 59:27But I got to think about all missing this game.
- 59:29This is the biggest game all misses played in since I mean.
- 59:34Ever sweet? Yeah.
- 59:36Since last week, I mean, that's at home and now you go facing a
- 59:40Georgia team where this is what Kirby smarts like.
- 59:42Fifth playoff appearance. They've been in the a new year,
- 59:466 ball every year since Kirby second year at the pro.
- 59:49This is 9 years in a row. So I think you've got a lot of
- 59:52experience and I think that's why about Indiana and Alabama.
- 59:56Alabama has played in these games.
- 59:58I mean, even I know it's a new staff, but Caitlyn Dubois played
- 1:00:00for a national championship. He won a playoff game at
- 1:00:03Washington. So staff's used to it.
- 1:00:05The players are used to it on that are on the roster.
- 1:00:07So that would be my answer is the Rose Bowl.
- 1:00:09I do wonder it's hard to quantify that as far as what it
- 1:00:12feels like when I know it's fun to talk about.
- 1:00:15But now your season is actually on the line.
- 1:00:17It really is winner go home, you've got these special patches
- 1:00:20in the jersey, you've got a 5050 crowd split.
- 1:00:24It's just interesting. It's.
- 1:00:26It's hard to these it's hard to forget.
- 1:00:28It's easy to forget that these are 18 to 22 year olds and this
- 1:00:32is what made what Saban did so special.
- 1:00:35And a lot of these historically great coaches is especially in
- 1:00:38this, you know, social media world is keeping these players
- 1:00:42motivated. It's really impressive.
- 1:00:44That's why I think he's the GOAT.
- 1:00:46And again, it's just something in the back of my mind as I'm
- 1:00:48watching this is like, how do you get this 18 year old to lock
- 1:00:51in when they haven't been here before?
- 1:00:54Something to keep an eye on. I think it's fun to think about.
