- Lucas: When you look at the silhouette of Istanbul today, with the Hagia Sophia standing guard over the Bosphorus, it’s easy to think of the city as a static monument to imperial grandeur. But beneath those stone arches, the heart of the Ottoman Empire was beating with a rhythm that was about to stop forever. We’ve talked before about the Tulip Era’s frivolity and the quiet exile of the last Caliph, but there is one moment in the nineteenth century that fundamentally broke the old world to build the new. Luna: You’re talking about the end of the Janissaries. Lucas: Exactly. For centuries, the Janissaries were the crown jewel of the Ottoman military, an elite corps recruited through the devshirme system. They were supposed to be the Sultan’s loyal slaves, bound by oath and faith, but by the early 1800s, they had become something else entirely—a powerful political lobby that could install or depose sultans with a single shout. Lucas: It wasn’t always like this. In the beginning, the Janissaries were strict ascetics who lived in barracks, ate communal meals, and were forbidden from marrying or engaging in trade. They were the professional standing army that allowed the Ottomans to conquer Constantinople and expand across three continents. Their discipline was their strength, and their loyalty was absolute. Luna: So when did that discipline start to erode? Lucas: It started with the recruitment system itself. As the empire expanded, the supply of Christian boys from the Balkans dried up, so the sultans began accepting Muslim volunteers and even sons of existing Janissaries. This turned the corps into a hereditary guild rather than a meritocratic military force. They moved out of the barracks into the city, married, opened shops, and eventually realized they held all the leverage. Lucas: If a sultan tried to cut their pay or limit their privileges, the Janissaries would simply storm the Topkapi Palace, strangle the Grand Vizier, and demand the sultan’s resignation. It happened repeatedly. By the time Mahmud II took the throne in 1808, the Janissaries were less a fighting force and more a corporate interest group that controlled the capital. Luna: And Mahmud II was young enough to remember the trauma of his predecessor. Lucas: Right. His uncle, Mustafa IV, and his cousin, Selim III, had both been overthrown and killed by the Janissaries. Mahmud was barely twenty-two when he was placed on the throne, and he spent the first decade of his reign pretending to be incompetent and uninterested in politics just to survive. He let them believe he was weak while he secretly plotted their downfall. Lucas: But the pressure from outside was mounting. The Russian Empire was pushing south, and the British were watching closely. The Ottomans were losing territory because their military tactics were stuck in the fifteenth century while Europe was embracing gunpowder and linear formations. Mahmud knew that if he didn’t reform, the empire would collapse, but he also knew he couldn’t do it while the Janissaries held the keys to the palace. Luna: Did he try any other methods first? Lucas: He watched his predecessor fail. Sultan Selim III had actually tried to create a new modern army called the Nizam-i Cedid, or New Order. The Janissaries saw this as a direct threat to their existence and their religious privileges, so they revolted and forced Selim to abdicate. That failure taught Mahmud two crucial lessons: you can’t fight them head-on, and you need the support of the religious establishment. Lucas: Mahmud spent years cultivating alliances with the ulema, the Islamic scholars, convincing them that the Janissaries’ refusal to adapt was not just bad policy but a violation of Islamic duty. He framed the reform not as a Western import, but as a necessary step to defend the faith. It was a masterclass in political theater, using the very institutions that opposed him to isolate his enemies. Luna: So he bought off the clerics while preparing the guns. Lucas: Precisely. He also began training a secret corps of loyal soldiers, hidden away from the prying eyes of the Janissaries in the city. These were regular infantrymen and artillery units who answered only to him. He kept them small and mobile, ready to strike when the moment was right. Meanwhile, he continued to act the part of the passive, traditionalist sultan, signing decrees that pleased the Janissary leadership. Lucas: The turning point came in May 1826. The Janissaries had been complaining about low wages and demanding promotions for months. Mahmud finally granted their requests, which seemed like a victory for them. But then, a few days later, they demanded more. And this time, Mahmud refused. He ordered the bells of the nearby mosques to be rung, signaling that the call to prayer was interrupted, a grave insult that implied the Janissaries were acting against God. Luna: That must have thrown them into chaos. Lucas: It did. The Janissaries erupted in anger, marching toward the palace once again. But instead of cowering behind the walls, Mahmud stood his ground. He had positioned his artillery cannons around the streets of Istanbul, pointed directly at the main avenues. When the Janissaries charged, the royal artillery fired canister shot—essentially giant shotgun blasts filled with iron balls—into the crowds. Lucas: The sound was deafening, and the carnage was immediate. Thousands of Janissaries were killed in the streets of Istanbul. Those who survived fled to their barracks, hoping to barricade themselves inside. But Mahmud had already bribed the gatekeepers or surrounded the compounds with his loyal troops. He promised mercy to anyone who surrendered, and most did. Luna: What happened to the ones who resisted? Lucas: The resistance was crushed in the Arnauty Kapisi district, where the remaining Janissaries made a final stand. After a brief but fierce battle, the last holdouts were captured. In the days that followed, Mahmud ordered the execution of nearly all the surviving Janissary officers and senior members. The entire institution, which had existed for over four hundred years, was wiped out in a matter of weeks. Lucas: This event is known as the Auspicious Incident, or Vaka-i Hayriye, in Turkish history. It’s called auspicious because it removed the biggest obstacle to modernization. Mahmud dissolved the old corps and immediately began forming a new, modern army based on European lines. He even brought in French and British instructors to train the new recruits in drill and discipline. Luna: It feels like a violent birth of modern Turkey. Lucas: It absolutely was. The Janissaries had become a symbol of stagnation, resisting change while the world moved on. By destroying them, Mahmud cleared the path for administrative, educational, and military reforms that would define the Ottoman Empire for the next century. He abolished the title of the Janissary Aga and replaced it with a Ministry of War, centralizing control in ways that had never been possible before. Lucas: There is a haunting image from that day. The last Mehter, the Janissary band, played their national anthem as they marched to their deaths. Music has always been central to their identity, and even in their final moments, they maintained their pride. It’s a tragic but powerful symbol of an era ending. Luna: Do you think Mahmud regretted the violence? Lucas: Historians debate whether it was premeditated murder or a desperate measure to save the state. Some argue that he had no choice; the Janissaries had proven too dangerous to manage. Others see it as a ruthless consolidation of power. What’s clear is that after the incident, Mahmud ruled with an iron fist, using the new army to suppress rebellions in Egypt and Greece, and to impose order throughout the empire. Lucas: He also used the wealth confiscated from the Janissaries to fund public works in Istanbul. He built hospitals, schools, and infrastructure projects that improved the lives of ordinary citizens. So while the method was brutal, the outcome was a more functional state that could compete with its European rivals, at least for a while. Luna: It’s a stark reminder of how much pain comes with progress. Lucas: It really is. The Janissaries were not just soldiers; they were a social institution, a family structure for thousands of men. Destroying them tore apart the social fabric of Istanbul, leaving many people homeless and destitute overnight. The human cost was immense, even if the geopolitical benefit was clear. Lucas: Today, if you walk through Istanbul, you might see remnants of their barracks or hear stories from older residents about the legends of that day. But the silence in the military parade grounds is louder than any memory. The Janissaries are gone, replaced by a professional army that answers to the state, not to its own privileges. Luna: And that changed everything for the region. Lucas: It did. The center held, for a little longer. Mahmud II died in 1839, but the structure he built lasted until the empire’s eventual collapse. The Auspicious Incident remains one of the most decisive moments in Ottoman history, a moment where tradition was sacrificed on the altar of survival. E. X. I. N. G. O. Luna: It’s great to know exactly where to find you. Lucas: Thanks. And speaking of structures, the new army Mahmud created relied heavily on artillery, which brings us to the engineers who designed the fortifications of the Bosphorus. Lucas: After the Janissaries were disbanded, Mahmud needed to secure the capital against foreign naval threats. He commissioned a series of massive coastal batteries along the narrow straits, manned by his new professional troops. These fortifications were technologically advanced, featuring rotating turrets and rifled cannons that could track moving ships with precision. Luna: How did they compare to the old defenses? Lucas: Much more sophisticated. The old Ottoman forts were static stone walls, vulnerable to siege. The new batteries were dynamic, integrated into a broader defensive network that covered the entire width of the Bosphorus. They were designed to work in concert, creating a kill zone for any enemy fleet trying to pass through. Lucas: One key figure in this redesign was a French engineer named François Jean Barthélemy d’Antoine, who advised the Sultan on fortification techniques. He helped integrate the latest European military architecture into the Ottoman landscape, blending function with the aesthetic requirements of the imperial city. Luna: So the skyline became a weapon. Lucas: In a sense, yes. The horizon of Istanbul was reshaped by the need for defense. You can still see some of these batteries today, though they have long since fallen silent. They stand as monuments to a time when the empire was trying to catch up with the industrial age. Lucas: The legacy of Mahmud’s reforms extended beyond the military. He also reformed the education system, opening new medical schools and engineering academies that trained a new class of bureaucrats. These men would go on to lead the Tanzimat reforms, the great modernization movement of the late nineteenth century. Luna: It’s amazing how one event can ripple forward like that. Lucas: It does. The Auspicious Incident was a rupture, but it was also a bridge. It connected the medieval Ottoman world to the modern nation-state, however imperfectly. And it left a mark on the collective memory of Istanbul that lasts to this day. Lucas: As the sun sets over the Bosphorus, casting long shadows across the water, we can imagine the echoes of that summer day in 1826. The clash of steel, the roar of cannon fire, and the sudden, terrifying silence that followed. A empire reborn from its own ashes. Luna: A heavy price for a new beginning. Lucas: Indeed. But sometimes, history demands such prices. We’ll leave you with that thought as we close this chapter of our story. Until next time, keep looking closer at the stones.
