Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: We are out of the gates on sport and state.
- 0:02Speaker 1: Good morning to you.
- 0:03Speaker 2: Glad you're with us for Hutton and Withrow presented by
- 0:06Speaker 2: Hard Rock Bet.
- 0:06Speaker 1: He's Chad Withrow. I'm Jonathan Hutton. Chad, good morning to you.
- 0:10Speaker 1: Good morning, Hutton. Thrilled to be with you this morning.
- 0:13Speaker 3: Excited about what's going to be a big day here
- 0:16Speaker 3: on this show as we get ready for a huge weekend.
- 0:18Speaker 1: No doubt, man.
- 0:19Speaker 2: I'm excited for your top 10 games of the college
- 0:21Speaker 2: football weekend coming up a little bit later in the show.
- 0:24Speaker 3: You know, you kind of win some, you lose some
- 0:26Speaker 3: each week. And this could turn out to be the
- 0:29Speaker 3: greatest weekend in the history of the sport. But coming
- 0:31Speaker 3: off a weekend, Hutton, where we had the second most
- 0:34Speaker 3: views of any college football weekend on record, I don't
- 0:38Speaker 3: think we're going to match that this weekend with my
- 0:39Speaker 3: top 10 games. I'm just going to make that prediction.
- 0:42Speaker 3: I hope that I'm wrong. I hope every game goes
- 0:44Speaker 3: down to the wire. And we come back on Monday
- 0:46Speaker 3: and we're like, damn, that was a great college football weekend.
- 0:50Speaker 3: But just looking at the top 10, it's going to
- 0:52Speaker 3: be tough. There are weeks where I write down 14,
- 0:54Speaker 3: 15 games. and I have a hard time deciding. I
- 0:57Speaker 3: wrote down exactly eight games this week, and then I
- 1:00Speaker 3: had to go find two more at the tail end
- 1:02Speaker 3: of the top ten to put in that list.
- 1:04Speaker 1: Well, we've got some good games in the SEC. I
- 1:06Speaker 1: know that.
- 1:08Speaker 2: Let's run through those, man. Let's give some definitive predictions
- 1:11Speaker 2: as we get ready for the weekend.
- 1:12Speaker 1: Where do we want to start?
- 1:13Speaker 3: Let's go Tennessee, South Carolina to start because... We've been
- 1:17Speaker 3: talking a lot about Tennessee's physical manhandling of Alabama all week, Hutton,
- 1:21Speaker 3: and now it's what feels like from everybody talking about it,
- 1:26Speaker 3: what Vegas thinks that this is the eventual letdown, the
- 1:30Speaker 3: relief syndrome.
- 1:31Speaker 1: It's going to be natural.
- 1:32Speaker 3: This is Tennessee's eighth straight game in eight weeks before
- 1:36Speaker 3: they finally get the bye next week. You've got South
- 1:38Speaker 3: Carolina coming off a bye. South Carolina coming off that
- 1:41Speaker 3: bye after beating Florida on the road. What do you
- 1:44Speaker 3: think is going to happen in this game?
- 1:46Speaker 2: See, I think it's bulletin board material here that Tennessee
- 1:50Speaker 2: is the road underdog going into this game. I think
- 1:54Speaker 2: if they were the favorite and everyone were betting into
- 1:57Speaker 2: the hype and the sharp money wasn't going against Tennessee
- 2:00Speaker 2: here and the line hadn't swapped the way it did,
- 2:03Speaker 2: that 6-1 Tennessee is going up there pissed off for greatness.
- 2:06Speaker 2: That's the way I feel. And look, they forced four turnovers.
- 2:10Speaker 2: South Carolina, like 100th in the nation in turnover margin.
- 2:15Speaker 2: They've played a very, very tough schedule. But being the
- 2:18Speaker 2: home favorite, I think that gives motivation to the Vols
- 2:20Speaker 2: to not overlook this game. I realize it's a very
- 2:22Speaker 2: tough place to play. But the turnover issues for the Gamecocks, Chad,
- 2:26Speaker 2: I think the Vols' opportunistic defense paired with South Carolina's
- 2:29Speaker 2: just atrocious pass defense. I think McIntyre's going to have
- 2:33Speaker 2: some very definitive play-action throws that are going to be
- 2:35Speaker 2: working well. He doesn't have to go deep with the football.
- 2:38Speaker 2: I will take the points. I take Tennessee to win
- 2:40Speaker 2: the game. And look, I think Shane Beamer has a
- 2:43Speaker 2: lot to play for here. He remains the head coach
- 2:46Speaker 2: with a win. I think that goes without saying because
- 2:49Speaker 2: he's already beat Florida. He'll have the game against Tennessee.
- 2:51Speaker 2: But Chad, give me Tennessee to win this game. And
- 2:55Speaker 2: I realize that there's a lot of people that feel
- 2:57Speaker 2: like the letdown's happening.
- 2:59Speaker 1: I don't think it's happening yet.
- 3:01Speaker 3: I think it's a fascinating matchup of styles and what
- 3:04Speaker 3: the strengths are of this team. South Carolina's got the
- 3:07Speaker 3: best rush defense in the SEC. We know that Tennessee
- 3:10Speaker 3: ultimately wants to run the ball, especially in the second
- 3:12Speaker 3: half with their closer, Deshaun Bishop. He is the closer
- 3:15Speaker 3: of this football team. He did that against Alabama. They've
- 3:18Speaker 3: yet to allow 150 yards on the ground this season. Now,
- 3:21Speaker 3: in a couple of games, like Mississippi State and Alabama,
- 3:24Speaker 3: that's because teams can throw it all over them. But
- 3:26Speaker 3: you've got a guy now in his third start in
- 3:30Speaker 3: George McIntyre that doesn't have a ton of experience. Is
- 3:32Speaker 3: he able to throw all over South Carolina this season?
- 3:35Speaker 3: in this game because there will be opportunities in the
- 3:37Speaker 3: passing game. Mike Matthews suddenly has gotten things going for Tennessee.
- 3:41Speaker 3: I think there are some strengths that line up well
- 3:43Speaker 3: here for South Carolina.
- 3:44Speaker 1: But if you're looking for a.
- 3:45Speaker 3: Strength that lines up really well for Tennessee, Carter Miller
- 3:49Speaker 3: is currently listed as questionable for South Carolina. Tennessee, for
- 3:52Speaker 3: the first time, has a clean sheet. They've got all
- 3:53Speaker 3: the guys out for the season, but they don't have
- 3:56Speaker 3: one player who's doubtful, questionable, anything going into this game.
- 3:59Speaker 3: The starting center for South Carolina, Carter Miller from Ravenwood
- 4:03Speaker 3: High School. here in Brentwood, Tennessee. His list is questionable.
- 4:08Speaker 1: Do we recall how.
- 4:09Speaker 3: It went for Alabama a week ago when their starting
- 4:11Speaker 3: center was out for the game and Xavier Gilliam was
- 4:14Speaker 3: in the backfield?
- 4:14Speaker 1: Yes, we do. On every play.
- 4:16Speaker 3: And Tennessee could do whatever they wanted on that defensive front.
- 4:19Speaker 3: South Carolina wants to run the football.
- 4:21Speaker 1: They want to run it with their running backs.
- 4:23Speaker 3: They want to run the ball with Lenora Sellers. Even
- 4:26Speaker 3: if he plays at less than 100%, that should be
- 4:29Speaker 3: an advantage for Tennessee across the defensive front.
- 4:32Speaker 1: If he doesn't play... they could wreak.
- 4:34Speaker 3: Havoc in the backfield against South Carolina, which would be
- 4:37Speaker 3: a huge advantage for Tennessee. Hutton, I said coming into
- 4:41Speaker 3: this season, I looked at this game the whole time
- 4:44Speaker 3: and I thought, this is a loss for Tennessee. This
- 4:47Speaker 3: is a spot where they lose because they're going into
- 4:50Speaker 3: the bye that week because they have a bit of
- 4:52Speaker 3: a gauntlet with Texas and Alabama and those games going
- 4:55Speaker 3: into it, that this is a natural letdown spot. And
- 4:59Speaker 3: I don't think it was going to take much of
- 5:00Speaker 3: a letdown to lose Tennessee. Going into the season, this
- 5:02Speaker 3: was a 50% chance for both teams on the ESPN-FBI.
- 5:06Speaker 1: I'm looking at it this morning. While South Carolina is.
- 5:09Speaker 3: A 2.5-point favorite, ESPN-FBI has Tennessee as a 59.5% chance
- 5:15Speaker 3: of winning based on what's happened already this year, even
- 5:18Speaker 3: on the road.
- 5:19Speaker 1: This will be Tennessee's first true road game. I mean,
- 5:21Speaker 1: let's face it.
- 5:22Speaker 3: At Georgia Tech, half the stadium was orange, at least.
- 5:26Speaker 3: And then at Arkansas, nobody cared. In the crowd. There
- 5:29Speaker 3: was hardly anyone there. It was not a raucous atmosphere.
- 5:32Speaker 3: George McIntyre is going to go on the road and
- 5:34Speaker 3: feel some noise for the first time this season. I
- 5:39Speaker 3: want to pick the Vols. I badly want to pick
- 5:41Speaker 3: the Vols, especially after picking Alabama last week and being
- 5:44Speaker 3: wrong about it. But I've got to go two straight
- 5:46Speaker 3: weeks where I'm picking the opponent against Tennessee. I think
- 5:49Speaker 3: South Carolina wins a close home game. I think Vegas
- 5:53Speaker 3: does know something. I don't think this is some better trap.
- 5:56Speaker 3: When people look at that line and think that Vegas
- 5:59Speaker 3: is crazy, I think South Carolina finds a way to
- 6:02Speaker 3: win at home. And then Tennessee is going to have
- 6:04Speaker 3: a week off to get ready for a November slate
- 6:07Speaker 3: that's going to feature do-or-die games throughout the month if
- 6:10Speaker 3: they want to be in the college football playoff hunt.
- 6:14Speaker 2: I've been mentioning the defense a lot in this preview
- 6:17Speaker 2: all week, but I'm thinking myself too. At some point,
- 6:20Speaker 2: McIntyre settles in. You knew how I was thinking pregame,
- 6:25Speaker 2: watching him warm up a week ago.
- 6:27Speaker 1: I'm thinking, is this guy locked in? Turns out he was.
- 6:31Speaker 1: Turns out he is.
- 6:33Speaker 2: I come out of that game thinking, this guy kind
- 6:36Speaker 2: of knows who he is and what he needs to
- 6:37Speaker 2: do to get ready. There comes to be a trust
- 6:41Speaker 2: factor at some point where you have to slowly start
- 6:44Speaker 2: to allow him to run the entire offense. And his
- 6:47Speaker 2: receivers are starting to make plays. Jed, I think that
- 6:50Speaker 2: everything's coming together at a nice pace. They're not forcing
- 6:54Speaker 2: a lot of things. They still run the ball, what, 60%, 65%
- 6:56Speaker 2: of the time. That's their offense. But at what point
- 6:59Speaker 2: do you start to push the lever forward a little
- 7:01Speaker 2: bit and see if he's kind of starting to come
- 7:04Speaker 2: along within the offense after starting the season.
- 7:06Speaker 1: As a backup?
- 7:07Speaker 2: Look, we've been waiting to see that with the Tennessee
- 7:09Speaker 2: Titans and Cam Ward. That hasn't happened. I do think
- 7:13Speaker 2: with McIntyre, he's calm, cool, and collected, right? And I
- 7:17Speaker 2: think in an atmosphere like this, The way I saw
- 7:20Speaker 2: him in warm-ups last week at home, I think that
- 7:23Speaker 2: serves him well going into the game like this. I
- 7:25Speaker 2: think that's a cold-blooded killer is what I saw in
- 7:28Speaker 2: warm-ups last week. When I thought he wasn't locked in,
- 7:31Speaker 2: I thought he looked nervous. Turns out he was the opposite.
- 7:33Speaker 2: He came out throwing the football over the yard, moving
- 7:35Speaker 2: the football down the field. So let's see more of that.
- 7:38Speaker 2: And maybe Vegas is always right. They do know something
- 7:43Speaker 2: we don't know. But in this case... I think the
- 7:45Speaker 2: money just initially wanted to go Tennessee's way, and it didn't.
- 7:51Speaker 2: South Carolina's coming off a nice win. They have a
- 7:55Speaker 2: team that's very talented, but for whatever reason, they've never
- 7:58Speaker 2: put everything together collectively. And they don't play well at
- 8:01Speaker 2: home whenever they get up by, what, 13 to 17 points.
- 8:04Speaker 1: They give up those leads.
- 8:06Speaker 3: Yeah. And that's something to keep in mind, too, if
- 8:08Speaker 3: you're Tennessee. Even if you fall behind two scores, you're right.
- 8:11Speaker 3: I mean, keep plugging, because against Kentucky and against Mississippi State,
- 8:15Speaker 3: they blew some early two, three-score leads in one of
- 8:19Speaker 3: the games, too, that they blew in those games. So
- 8:21Speaker 3: definitely something to keep in mind. Also, with George McIntyre,
- 8:25Speaker 3: there was a lot of criticism of Tennessee's offensive line
- 8:28Speaker 3: earlier in the year with all the sacks they gave up.
- 8:30Speaker 1: Yes.
- 8:30Speaker 3: I do now wonder how much of that was on
- 8:32Speaker 3: Faison Brandon just holding the ball too long or not
- 8:35Speaker 3: being in the right spot or not having his eyes
- 8:37Speaker 3: in the right spot because he got sacked against Arkansas,
- 8:40Speaker 3: but the sack problems have not been as big of
- 8:42Speaker 3: an issue since. I'll also say, I don't know that
- 8:45Speaker 3: Tennessee had the right five offensive linemen on the field.
- 8:48Speaker 3: You know, when Wendell Moy got hurt and Nick Moore
- 8:51Speaker 3: came in and Sham Umarov went out and they started
- 8:54Speaker 3: doing some different things with different guys. Donovan Haslam comes
- 8:57Speaker 3: into the game. They became more physical in the interior
- 9:00Speaker 3: of that defensive line. And that's how you see that
- 9:03Speaker 3: you've got a running back in Deshaun Bishop that ran
- 9:05Speaker 3: for more yards between the tackles than any one player
- 9:08Speaker 3: has done against Alabama in a decade. behind that physical
- 9:12Speaker 3: interior of the offensive line for Tennessee. So that's going
- 9:16Speaker 3: to be a huge factor in this game also. I'm
- 9:18Speaker 3: also betting on.
- 9:19Speaker 2: The fact, Chad, that the defense will set up the
- 9:21Speaker 2: offense in good opportunistic situations here.
- 9:23Speaker 1: I'm confident in their defense.
- 9:25Speaker 3: Tennessee's formula, we know what it is.
- 9:28Speaker 1: Yep.
- 9:28Speaker 3: Right?
- 9:28Speaker 1: I mean, it is.
- 9:29Speaker 3: You're going to pass to open up the run. You're
- 9:32Speaker 3: going to get Deshaun Bishop going over the course of
- 9:34Speaker 3: the game. And in the third and fourth quarter, you're
- 9:35Speaker 3: going to feed him steadily.
- 9:36Speaker 1: Yes. And you're going to win a game.
- 9:37Speaker 3: You're going to play great defense. You're going to pressure
- 9:39Speaker 3: the quarterback. And you're going to do all of those things.
- 9:42Speaker 3: There will be a game at some point. Maybe it's
- 9:44Speaker 3: this weekend on the road. But we're George McIntyre. They're
- 9:46Speaker 3: going to fall behind. He's going to have to make
- 9:47Speaker 3: a lot of throws. They're going to have to throw
- 9:49Speaker 3: the ball more than they've thrown it. And he's going
- 9:52Speaker 3: to have to make some big plays.
- 9:53Speaker 1: I'm taking Tennessee.
- 9:55Speaker 3: I'm taking South Carolina. I think it's very close. But look,
- 9:59Speaker 3: I'm fascinated to watch how Tennessee responds to the huge
- 10:03Speaker 3: win over Alabama. And then what South Carolina looks like.
- 10:05Speaker 3: Was that a blip on the radar in the swamp?
- 10:08Speaker 3: And they go right back to being a disappointing team.
- 10:11Speaker 3: in this game after the break, or are we going
- 10:12Speaker 3: to see a different South Carolina team? The South Carolina
- 10:15Speaker 3: team that had the huge ceiling, the very high ceiling
- 10:18Speaker 3: coming into the season. We talked to Shane Beamer in Tampa.
- 10:21Speaker 3: He knew how talented this team is, and they were
- 10:25Speaker 3: one of those teams. Hey, maybe this is a sleeper
- 10:27Speaker 3: college football playoff team. Do they play like that team
- 10:30Speaker 3: the remainder of the season?
- 10:31Speaker 1: I can't wait to watch. Same here, man. Same here.
- 10:34Speaker 2: I was thinking this until you made the comment yesterday
- 10:37Speaker 2: about Lane Kiffin publicly saying I was rooting for Auburn
- 10:41Speaker 2: because I was thinking Auburn can now parlay consecutive upsets
- 10:44Speaker 2: over Georgia and LSU because I think.
- 10:46Speaker 1: They're a live home dog in an 11 a.m. Central kickoff.
- 10:51Speaker 2: A dogfight in this where LSU coming into a game
- 10:57Speaker 2: where they've already gone on the road. They lost to Kentucky.
- 11:00Speaker 2: They do play in these dogfight games. but Auburn was
- 11:04Speaker 2: able to show something against Georgia of all teams, but
- 11:07Speaker 2: LSU favored by seven for a reason over under at
- 11:10Speaker 2: 50 and a half. I, Chad, I think this is
- 11:13Speaker 2: a close game until the fourth and LSU opens it up.
- 11:16Speaker 1: Um, and I I'm with you.
- 11:18Speaker 2: I think LSU wins this game, Auburn, not going to
- 11:20Speaker 2: parlay consecutive upsets, but I, I do think they're going
- 11:24Speaker 2: to show that they're more locked in than what we
- 11:25Speaker 2: saw to begin the season.
- 11:27Speaker 1: Yeah. I think, um, Fascinating.
- 11:31Speaker 3: I mean, a couple of elimination-type games.
- 11:33Speaker 1: Yes.
- 11:33Speaker 3: You know, Auburn with two losses also. You've got to
- 11:35Speaker 3: throw them in the mix.
- 11:36Speaker 2: Sure.
- 11:36Speaker 3: Right now with only the two losses and LSU and
- 11:38Speaker 3: then a game we're about to get to also.
- 11:40Speaker 1: A & M and Alabama. A & M comes in 4-3.
- 11:45Speaker 2: Alabama 5-2 with back-to-back losses. And, again, the over-under here
- 11:51Speaker 2: at 50.5. Bama by 14. Initially, Chad, I love the
- 11:55Speaker 2: under in this stuff.
- 11:57Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 11:58Speaker 2: Keelan Russell has been held to under 200 passing yards
- 12:00Speaker 2: in back-to-back weeks. But you made the point yesterday, if
- 12:03Speaker 2: this is a week to get back on track, he's
- 12:07Speaker 2: been served up with the A & M defense to
- 12:10Speaker 2: do just that.
- 12:11Speaker 3: Yeah, and I think it's just kind of the story
- 12:13Speaker 3: of Keelan DeBoer's career at Alabama. It's like, you know,
- 12:16Speaker 3: the moment you feel comfortable as an Alabama fan, boy,
- 12:20Speaker 3: we're headed in the right direction. This offense is great.
- 12:23Speaker 3: We got exactly what we thought we did from the
- 12:25Speaker 3: guy from Washington. It's like that's the moment. that they
- 12:28Speaker 3: have 200 total yards of offense and 10 points against Tennessee.
- 12:33Speaker 3: And in the moment, Alabama fans are complaining and crying about,
- 12:37Speaker 3: this isn't the program we signed up for, this is.
- 12:39Speaker 1: Nothing like Nick Saban.
- 12:40Speaker 3: They go out and physically dominate someone or look great
- 12:44Speaker 3: the next week. He is a good bounce-back coach, is
- 12:46Speaker 3: what I'm saying, and Kalen DeBoer. There's a lot of
- 12:49Speaker 3: talk about he needs to fire Ryan Grubb as offensive coordinator,
- 12:52Speaker 3: all these things.
- 12:54Speaker 1: I'm not buying that.
- 12:55Speaker 3: Just a couple weeks ago, we were praising this offense
- 12:58Speaker 3: as being one of the greatest. I mean, remember, they
- 13:00Speaker 3: had to score a ton of points to beat Florida State. Also,
- 13:03Speaker 3: in a game, they gave up a lot of points.
- 13:04Speaker 3: They scored a ton on the road at Mississippi State.
- 13:07Speaker 3: I think the offense gets back on track. I think
- 13:10Speaker 3: Alabama wins comfortably, and they cover the spread against A & M.
- 13:14Speaker 1: They may win comfortably.
- 13:16Speaker 2: I just think this is a low-possession grinder is the
- 13:18Speaker 2: way I described it. I think Keelan Russell, it's going
- 13:22Speaker 2: to take some time for him to get back into
- 13:24Speaker 2: rhythm and out of the funk. A & M' s defense, though,
- 13:28Speaker 2: is a defense that can play well at times, but offensively,
- 13:33Speaker 2: they get no help. They've scored two touchdowns, and they
- 13:37Speaker 2: haven't scored a touchdown on the road in SEC play.
- 13:39Speaker 2: Their points scored is two touchdowns, 13 points combined. on
- 13:49Speaker 2: the road in SEC play. Low possession grinder. I think
- 13:52Speaker 2: Keelan Russell makes enough plays to win, and I think
- 13:54Speaker 2: this is the fourth quarter game where the score is
- 13:57Speaker 2: going to be more separated than the way this game
- 13:59Speaker 2: is played, Chad. I'm taking Bama. Finally, Ole Miss and Texas.
- 14:04Speaker 2: Let's go back to what we said about South Carolina
- 14:05Speaker 2: and Tennessee. What does Vegas know here with Texas favored
- 14:09Speaker 2: in this game?
- 14:11Speaker 1: I think Vegas.
- 14:12Speaker 3: Knows that it is hard to win on the road
- 14:14Speaker 3: in the SEC, but we've seen it time and time again.
- 14:18Speaker 3: I would say that Vegas would respond, Hutton, and say, boy,
- 14:21Speaker 3: everybody questioned us when the line was so close with
- 14:23Speaker 3: Florida and Ole Miss after Florida was America's sweetheart after
- 14:28Speaker 3: beating LSU in Oxford, a game that we were at.
- 14:32Speaker 1: I think that they do know something.
- 14:34Speaker 3: I think Texas responds after a bad performance against Florida,
- 14:38Speaker 3: costly turnovers, bad decision-making. They lost to a backup quarterback.
- 14:43Speaker 3: in Florida at home a week ago. I think they
- 14:45Speaker 3: come back at home this week. I think the Longhorns get.
- 14:48Speaker 1: The job done.
- 14:49Speaker 3: We're going to talk a little bit about Arch Manning
- 14:51Speaker 3: a little bit later in the show. I don't know
- 14:52Speaker 3: that edgy Arch is going to be the difference. I
- 14:55Speaker 3: do think that defense for Texas is still good enough
- 14:59Speaker 3: to slow down Ole Miss' offense, even with Trinidad Chambliss
- 15:02Speaker 3: being as good as he is. Give me Texas at
- 15:04Speaker 3: home to stay alive in the college football playoff hunt
- 15:08Speaker 3: and give Ole Miss their second loss of the season.
- 15:10Speaker 2: Glaring styles classes here. Ole Miss struggles on defense. Texas
- 15:13Speaker 2: has problems on offense. And I'll take Chambliss and Lacey
- 15:17Speaker 2: to make enough plays. I think the Rebels are locked in,
- 15:21Speaker 2: and they continue to be locked in as the SEC
- 15:24Speaker 2: title game favorite with a straight-up.
- 15:26Speaker 1: Win here on the road.
- 15:29Speaker 2: I'm taking the better overall team that I've seen and
- 15:32Speaker 2: the quarterback that is more consistent in this.
- 15:35Speaker 1: Maybe we see two quarterbacks for Texas, Chad. Could be.
- 15:39Speaker 3: If you're seeing two quarterbacks for Texas, I'm switching my pick.
- 15:44Speaker 1: I'm going Ole Miss.
- 15:46Speaker 3: So if that's the case, I'll go ahead and call
- 15:48Speaker 3: it right now. I don't think this is some, you know,
- 15:51Speaker 3: not redemption story or, boy, the backup comes in and
- 15:54Speaker 3: leads them to victory. If you see the backup quarterback
- 15:57Speaker 3: and not Arch Mangany playing this game, that's because Ole Miss.
- 16:00Speaker 1: Is winning the football game.
- 16:02Speaker 3: Bad.
- 16:03Speaker 1: Do Texas fans boo Arch Manning in this game? Is
- 16:06Speaker 1: that possible?
- 16:07Speaker 3: This is not going to be like when Tennessee went
- 16:08Speaker 3: to George McIntyre and beat Auburn after falling behind at halftime.
- 16:14Speaker 3: They're down two scores already, and now in desperation they're
- 16:17Speaker 3: going to the backup, and it's not going to be
- 16:18Speaker 3: enough against this Ole Miss team. Coming up, we discuss
- 16:23Speaker 3: bad optics. There are a couple of examples straight ahead
- 16:26Speaker 3: here on Hutton and Withrow. Sutton Withrow presented by Hard
- 16:30Speaker 3: Rock Bet, and we turn to Hard Rock Bet for
- 16:32Speaker 3: all of the odds, lines, plus sharp insights, analysis, top content.

- 17:13Speaker 1: Guess what? The NBA's back, Chad. We would have known.
- 17:16Speaker 3: Oh, man.
- 17:16Speaker 1: Yeah. NBA's back, and we've got the bad optics. LeBron.
- 17:20Speaker 3: LeBron.
- 17:21Speaker 2: During the national anthem, he's dismissing criticism from the president
- 17:25Speaker 2: of how he's been handling that. And, uh, after Trump
- 17:29Speaker 2: called him a total disgrace.
- 17:32Speaker 1: Yeah. Uh, total disgrace.
- 17:34Speaker 3: And LeBron's response was, uh, must be a slow news day. Um,
- 17:38Speaker 3: you know, it must be a slow, slow day in
- 17:40Speaker 3: the office. Never said slow news day. Um, Hey, you
- 17:44Speaker 3: can make your own news by, by doing dumb things. Um,
- 17:48Speaker 3: is this a national emergency? No. No. With what LeBron
- 17:51Speaker 3: James is doing here. Is this something that President Trump
- 17:55Speaker 3: should comment on?
- 17:57Speaker 1: I don't know. It's what he does.
- 17:59Speaker 3: I'm not here to say one way or the other
- 18:01Speaker 3: whether he should.
- 18:02Speaker 1: It's just very obvious that this is something.
- 18:04Speaker 3: If one of his harshest critics, which LeBron James has
- 18:08Speaker 3: consistently been, does something that is not only bad optics,
- 18:12Speaker 3: but just makes him look bad and like he doesn't
- 18:14Speaker 3: really respect the flag and people who serve the country
- 18:17Speaker 3: and everything else.
- 18:19Speaker 1: President Trump is going to pounce.
- 18:20Speaker 3: All over it, and he's going to issue a statement
- 18:22Speaker 3: about it, calling LeBron James, as you mentioned, Hutton, a quote,
- 18:26Speaker 3: total disgrace, in all caps, about LeBron James. Here's what
- 18:31Speaker 3: I'd like for people to do when you're at a
- 18:33Speaker 3: sporting event, and this is for fans, and it's certainly
- 18:37Speaker 3: for players, and there are policies. There's been a WNBA
- 18:41Speaker 3: policy in place that they don't even go out on
- 18:42Speaker 3: the court to acknowledge that you stand during the national
- 18:46Speaker 3: anthem and And you don't make gestures. If you're swaying
- 18:50Speaker 3: to keep your legs loose, you know, with your hands
- 18:52Speaker 3: behind your back, it's totally fine. Everybody does that in
- 18:55Speaker 3: basketball games.
- 18:56Speaker 1: Yes.
- 18:57Speaker 3: But there's a way that you stand and you acknowledge
- 18:59Speaker 3: the national anthem. I remember being at the Grizzlies-Knicks game,
- 19:03Speaker 3: you know, a couple years ago and watching it. And
- 19:07Speaker 3: I'm like, everybody, look at that. They're uniformly go out
- 19:10Speaker 3: for the starting lineups. They're standing facing each other. The
- 19:13Speaker 3: coaches are on one end. The players are all here.
- 19:15Speaker 3: There is clearly a protocol in place for how you
- 19:18Speaker 3: acknowledge the national anthem.
- 19:21Speaker 1: I don't think anywhere in that.
- 19:21Speaker 3: NBA protocol is there anything about practicing your four iron
- 19:26Speaker 3: swing when you're doing it the way LeBron James was
- 19:28Speaker 3: and practicing a fadeaway jump shot at another point during
- 19:31Speaker 3: the national anthem.
- 19:33Speaker 1: It's intentional.
- 19:34Speaker 3: It is.
- 19:35Speaker 1: It's totally intentional. It's for attention.
- 19:38Speaker 3: I'm not going to honor the flag of the country
- 19:41Speaker 3: that elected this man as president. That is what LeBron
- 19:44Speaker 3: James said. That's the message he is trying to send.
- 19:46Speaker 1: And if I'm going to.
- 19:47Speaker 3: Make a mockery of it and do this and that,
- 19:50Speaker 3: this is my way to give the middle finger to
- 19:52Speaker 3: the president.
- 19:53Speaker 1: And he probably knows, oh, I might get a response
- 19:56Speaker 1: from this.
- 19:56Speaker 3: I don't care because then he's going to come at
- 19:58Speaker 3: me and it doesn't bother me one bit.
- 20:01Speaker 1: I don't like it.
- 20:02Speaker 3: I wish everyone would just stand and acknowledge the national anthem.
- 20:06Speaker 3: That's not old school of me. That's someone who loves America.
- 20:09Speaker 3: And I love the people who serve our country. And
- 20:12Speaker 3: when I'm standing for the national anthem, I'm thinking about
- 20:14Speaker 3: those that lost their lives for our country and those
- 20:18Speaker 3: that currently serve our country. And I want everybody who's
- 20:21Speaker 3: an American citizen to do that. Clay joked that if
- 20:24Speaker 3: it was the Chinese national anthem, LeBron James would stand
- 20:26Speaker 3: and honor it the entire time.
- 20:28Speaker 1: And sadly, he's probably correct. Yeah, he wouldn't be doing this. Yes.
- 20:32Speaker 1: He wouldn't be doing this.
- 20:33Speaker 2: He's treating this like he's listening to Sandstorm during an
- 20:36Speaker 2: intro video for the team, right before tip-off. You know,
- 20:39Speaker 2: like they're playing something on the Jumbotron instead of playing
- 20:42Speaker 2: the anthem.
- 20:44Speaker 1: But you're right.
- 20:45Speaker 2: Intentional, that's the right word. It's for attention and it's intentional.
- 20:51Speaker 3: It's intentionally for attention.
- 20:53Speaker 1: Yes. That is LeBron James. And you're right.
- 20:55Speaker 3: That's something you would see as they're like breaking huddle
- 20:58Speaker 3: and they're playing the pregame hype video before the opening tip.
- 21:01Speaker 3: That someone would be doing. Not something you do during
- 21:04Speaker 3: the national anthem.
- 21:05Speaker 1: Rob North, Carolina. And knowing LeBron, he's so.
- 21:10Speaker 3: I.
- 21:11Speaker 1: Was going back.
- 21:12Speaker 3: ESPN had a story about all the run-ins with LeBron
- 21:15Speaker 3: James and Donald Trump over the years.
- 21:19Speaker 1: He called him.
- 21:20Speaker 3: A bum when Laura Ingraham of Fox News said he
- 21:22Speaker 3: should shut up and dribble. He said, we will definitely
- 21:26Speaker 3: not shut up and dribble. I will definitely not do that.
- 21:29Speaker 3: I mean too much to society. He said, I mean
- 21:32Speaker 3: too much to the youth to shut up and dribble.
- 21:36Speaker 3: And I'm thinking, a guy who says, I mean too
- 21:40Speaker 3: much to society, this is the type of stuff that
- 21:43Speaker 3: he does. I bet the NBA sent some sort of
- 21:45Speaker 3: memo out about, hey, new season, just a reminder, here's
- 21:49Speaker 3: our protocol for the National Anthem. Now that the WNBA
- 21:52Speaker 3: not being out there for the National Anthem is getting
- 21:54Speaker 3: some attention. The NBA may have sent something to all
- 21:56Speaker 3: their member teams. Here's how we do it. LeBron James
- 21:59Speaker 3: probably got told that by someone or the coach is like, oh, okay,
- 22:02Speaker 3: I'll go out.
- 22:03Speaker 1: There and stand. But you know what I'm going to do?
- 22:05Speaker 3: I'm going to stand with my WNBA sisters and I'm
- 22:07Speaker 3: going to practice my golf swing while I do it.
- 22:09Speaker 3: And I'm going to practice my free throws for the
- 22:12Speaker 3: national anthem and not stand there like I'm supposed to.
- 22:14Speaker 3: You're just being a bratty little boy.
- 22:19Speaker 1: At that point is what you're doing.
- 22:20Speaker 3: You're standing there and you're thinking, oh, the teacher told
- 22:22Speaker 3: me to do something and there's a certain way to
- 22:24Speaker 3: do it, but that's just boomers out there that believe
- 22:27Speaker 3: you stand and put your arms behind your back or
- 22:29Speaker 3: put your arm on your chest for the National Anthem.
- 22:31Speaker 3: That's not me, LeBron James. I mean way too much
- 22:34Speaker 3: to society. I've been doing this in this league for
- 22:36Speaker 3: far too long. I do what I want, so I'll
- 22:38Speaker 3: practice golf during the National Anthem.
- 22:41Speaker 1: I think it's BS. It's ridiculous.
- 22:45Speaker 3: I don't think it's some national emergency or But when
- 22:48Speaker 3: the president talks about it, then it's going to become
- 22:50Speaker 3: a huge national story.
- 22:52Speaker 1: And let's say this, too.
- 22:54Speaker 2: The NBA, you mentioned the owners sending something out, and
- 22:58Speaker 2: maybe they did, maybe they didn't, from the league, not
- 23:02Speaker 2: the owners. Keep in mind that the NBA also practically
- 23:06Speaker 2: owns the WNBA. They're in control of the media contracts
- 23:12Speaker 2: that they have. Chad, in the NBA, you don't need
- 23:16Speaker 2: this for attention. You don't need this to be discussed.
- 23:20Speaker 2: The brand itself is good enough. In the WNBA, they
- 23:24Speaker 2: have to have the Caitlin Clark drama. They have to
- 23:27Speaker 2: have Sophie Cunningham drama. They have to have the anthem drama. Otherwise,
- 23:32Speaker 2: we're not talking about the games. We're not talking about
- 23:35Speaker 2: anything that's going on with their league. That's the truth.
- 23:41Speaker 2: It's not getting the attention to detail. Unless it's controversial,
- 23:45Speaker 2: you know, unless it's splitting up part of their fan
- 23:48Speaker 2: base into a group that's lumped in with Trump. And
- 23:51Speaker 2: that's what LeBron is playing to here.
- 23:54Speaker 1: It's all an act.
- 23:54Speaker 2: It's no different than any book we've ever seen him
- 23:56Speaker 2: read being on page two. When he's sitting there, he's
- 23:59Speaker 2: reading a book, or if he's talking about a movie
- 24:03Speaker 2: that he likes. He can't name two details about it,
- 24:07Speaker 2: and he can't be past page two on a book
- 24:09Speaker 2: that he's reading and tell you any.
- 24:10Speaker 1: Of the details that he likes or why he's reading it.
- 24:12Speaker 3: The LeBron James book club is less extensive than the
- 24:15Speaker 3: Andrew Luck book club, is what we're saying. If he
- 24:19Speaker 3: held a book club podcast.
- 24:20Speaker 1: There would be fewer books to discuss.
- 24:22Speaker 2: There was a montage of all the photos of him
- 24:23Speaker 2: either at a locker or walking into an arena, holding
- 24:26Speaker 2: a book or reading a book. He's always reading page two.
- 24:30Speaker 2: He's never in the middle of a book. If I
- 24:32Speaker 2: were going to fake it, I would flip to halfway through.
- 24:35Speaker 2: He's like first page.
- 24:37Speaker 3: LeBron James has definitely read two pages of more books
- 24:40Speaker 3: than any player in NBA history. Bill Walton was famously
- 24:44Speaker 3: well read, but he read the entire book and LeBron
- 24:48Speaker 3: James read two. He read more books, but he only
- 24:50Speaker 3: read the first two pages of all those books that
- 24:53Speaker 3: he read. Yes, no doubt about it. By the way,
- 24:56Speaker 3: do you know that the WBA finals are currently taking place?
- 24:59Speaker 3: And do you know what the series is at between
- 25:02Speaker 3: the Golden State Valkyrie? Is it Valkyrie or Valkyries? I'm
- 25:06Speaker 3: confused if it's plural or it's Valkyries.
- 25:08Speaker 2: I think it's Valkyrie. I do know that because we've
- 25:10Speaker 2: talked about which have the S. No, I don't even
- 25:13Speaker 2: know about this, Chad. I have not been paying attention.
- 25:15Speaker 3: You know what I know?
- 25:17Speaker 1: Because I read Sporting State.
- 25:18Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah. I know that they're not coming out for
- 25:20Speaker 3: the National Anthem. To your point, I don't know.
- 25:23Speaker 1: What's going on in the games. I did know that.
- 25:25Speaker 1: I happened to glance.
- 25:27Speaker 3: My TV to my right is on ESPN. I happened
- 25:29Speaker 3: to glance at one point yesterday and saw Stephen A.
- 25:32Speaker 3: Smith talking about Angel Reese having 12 points and 11
- 25:35Speaker 3: rebounds in one of the games. I didn't know Angel
- 25:38Speaker 3: Reese was in the WNBA Finals. That's a problem for
- 25:41Speaker 3: your product. And this has also been a problem for
- 25:44Speaker 3: the NBA. I am an NBA fan growing up. I
- 25:49Speaker 3: grew up in the Michael Jordan era.
- 25:50Speaker 1: I loved it. There's really good players in the NBA.
- 25:53Speaker 3: I'm not saying there's not. There's a reason to watch
- 25:57Speaker 3: the games as the season goes along, but it too
- 26:00Speaker 3: often gets overshadowed by this stuff. I watched the second half.
- 26:03Speaker 3: It was a pretty good game between the Sixers and
- 26:06Speaker 3: the Knicks. I was rooting for the Sixers. I'm rooting
- 26:08Speaker 3: for LeBron James' team. I want them to be the
- 26:10Speaker 3: New York Knicks of this year. and be that franchise
- 26:13Speaker 3: that hasn't won in a long time that goes on
- 26:15Speaker 3: and wins a title.
- 26:16Speaker 1: I'm interested in what they're doing in Philly.
- 26:19Speaker 3: But I get less interested when I see LeBron James
- 26:22Speaker 3: practicing his shots out of a bunker during the National
- 26:24Speaker 3: Anthem because this then becomes the narrative and the talking
- 26:27Speaker 3: points around the game. And then everybody wants to come
- 26:30Speaker 3: back and say, boy, let's make it about the games.
- 26:32Speaker 3: You're just distracting from the games. First off, the WNBA
- 26:35Speaker 3: product to me is not good enough to care that
- 26:38Speaker 3: much about the games.
- 26:39Speaker 1: They need this type of stuff. The NBA, I don't think,
- 26:42Speaker 1: needs it like the WNBA needs it.
- 26:45Speaker 3: And so LeBron James, it's an intentional misstep. That bothers
- 26:51Speaker 3: me about this. Let me just compare it to other leagues.
- 26:54Speaker 2: And I think the league to compare it to is
- 26:56Speaker 2: the National Hockey League because they play practically two anthems
- 26:59Speaker 2: every single night in that league. Chad, I never see
- 27:02Speaker 2: this there. I don't see a bunch of skating in
- 27:05Speaker 2: circles and warming up. I see both teams at the
- 27:08Speaker 2: red lines getting ready for a game where they're honoring
- 27:13Speaker 2: two different anthems at the arena. And there's not a
- 27:17Speaker 2: bunch of antics going on here. This can be done
- 27:21Speaker 2: without having to practice your golf swing. Again, there's no
- 27:25Speaker 2: attention to be had by some of the best players
- 27:27Speaker 2: in that league trying to draw attention to an anthem
- 27:31Speaker 2: or something political. It's about the sport itself. Again, it's
- 27:35Speaker 2: intentionally for attention. I don't see it in the hockey.
- 27:40Speaker 2: I'm talking in a league where I know that they
- 27:43Speaker 2: come out for the anthem, and that's done with intention.
- 27:47Speaker 1: Not the case. Football, absolutely, you see it there, too.
- 27:52Speaker 2: There's just so many people on the line, and teams
- 27:54Speaker 2: do this in different ways where you can salute the
- 27:57Speaker 2: flag on the sideline, or you have to line up
- 27:59Speaker 2: on the line. Uh, Vrabel used to make every, every
- 28:02Speaker 2: player lineup on the line. There are different ways to
- 28:04Speaker 2: do it in hockey and in the NBA, there is
- 28:06Speaker 2: a certain way to do it. And, uh, LeBron just,
- 28:10Speaker 2: you know, drawing attention to himself on purpose.
- 28:13Speaker 3: I mean, going back to high school, like we were
- 28:16Speaker 3: taught a certain way to stand in line and where
- 28:18Speaker 3: we were in the line each year. when they played
- 28:21Speaker 3: the National Anthem. Baseball, travel teams, tournament teams I was
- 28:25Speaker 3: on for Mount Joy Little League, the coaches would say,
- 28:28Speaker 3: we're going to stand down at the baseline. They're going
- 28:29Speaker 3: to announce you before the game. Both teams stand down
- 28:32Speaker 3: the lines, and you're going to stand there, and you're
- 28:34Speaker 3: going to put one hand behind your back. You're going
- 28:35Speaker 3: to take your hat off, and you're going to put
- 28:37Speaker 3: it here, and we're going to stand and face the
- 28:39Speaker 3: flag for the National Anthem. That stuff is cool. That's
- 28:43Speaker 3: part of what makes being an American a cool experience.
- 28:47Speaker 1: This is not old-timey. It's not boomer.
- 28:50Speaker 3: It is being patriotic and respecting and appreciating the country
- 28:55Speaker 3: you live in. And great point about the NHL, because
- 28:59Speaker 3: if LeBron James was an enforcer in the NHL and
- 29:03Speaker 3: he played for the Chicago Blackhawks, let's say, and he's
- 29:06Speaker 3: out there on the line getting ready, LeBron James, everything
- 29:10Speaker 3: with his mentality, everything he thinks right now, you know
- 29:13Speaker 3: what he would do during O Canada? He would show respect.
- 29:17Speaker 3: Because LeBron James cares more about Canada and not disrespecting
- 29:22Speaker 3: Canada or another country than he does disrespecting that flag.
- 29:27Speaker 3: Because that flag to LeBron James represents one man, Donald Trump.
- 29:32Speaker 1: Right, instead of the country. Exactly.
- 29:35Speaker 3: Donald Trump is an elected representative as president of the
- 29:39Speaker 3: United States of America. There have been other presidents. Barack
- 29:42Speaker 3: Obama is one of them, who LeBron James worships. There
- 29:45Speaker 3: have been plenty of presidents, Joe Biden, who he supported.
- 29:49Speaker 3: You respect the flag. It's not about one person who's
- 29:53Speaker 3: in office at that time. Respect the flag. Because I
- 29:56Speaker 3: guarantee you if he was in the NHL, he wouldn't
- 29:59Speaker 3: be practicing his golf swing during O Canada. And that's
- 30:01Speaker 3: what really bothers me about this. He would be at
- 30:04Speaker 3: attention for that. Clay talked about the Chinese national anthem,
- 30:07Speaker 3: which is funny. I think any other country, LeBron James
- 30:10Speaker 3: would rather be seen disrespecting the American flag than be
- 30:14Speaker 3: seen as someone who disrespects another country or another country's
- 30:17Speaker 3: anthem or flag.
- 30:19Speaker 1: Yep.
- 30:20Speaker 3: And what about the Falcons, Chad? So the Falcons, we
- 30:25Speaker 3: got a photo of this, right? They released some new
- 30:27Speaker 3: branding for an upcoming game, and it's very Third Reich-ish.
- 30:32Speaker 1: Yeah, it is.
- 30:33Speaker 3: This looks like Nazi propaganda with the way that Falcon
- 30:38Speaker 3: looks and, of course, the gold involved in the logo
- 30:42Speaker 3: of it. This is where I think a chief executive
- 30:49Speaker 3: officer over common sense could be involved.
- 30:51Speaker 1: Marketing.
- 30:52Speaker 3: Just someone that in the meeting room says, guys, if
- 30:56Speaker 3: you're doing the Rorschach test on what does this say
- 30:59Speaker 3: to you and you see that.
- 31:00Speaker 1: I would think Nazis.
- 31:02Speaker 3: The first time I saw that color, especially if you
- 31:03Speaker 3: take the Falcon out of it, it looks like Nazis
- 31:07Speaker 3: is all you think about. Someone in the room has
- 31:10Speaker 3: to see that and say it. And if you don't
- 31:13Speaker 3: have the courage to say it in that room, then
- 31:16Speaker 3: you should be fired from the Falcons. If you knew it,
- 31:19Speaker 3: if you come out after the fact and said, man,
- 31:20Speaker 3: I saw that, And, you know, I'm a history buff.
- 31:23Speaker 3: And the first thing I thought was Adolf Hitler and
- 31:25Speaker 3: the Nazi party. And I didn't say a word because
- 31:27Speaker 3: I didn't want to offend the person who put it together.
- 31:29Speaker 3: You should be fired. Because that's why you do things
- 31:32Speaker 3: like that. There needs to be checks and balances. And
- 31:35Speaker 3: someone needs to come up with and say, hey, you
- 31:37Speaker 3: know what? This is not a good idea, guys. Because
- 31:39Speaker 3: they are getting roasted in the mentions immediately. Millions of
- 31:44Speaker 3: people responding, trashing them for this decision.
- 31:47Speaker 2: And let's also, common sense would tell me and you,
- 31:50Speaker 2: all of us, They had a selection. They were given
- 31:54Speaker 2: several pitches of this. They probably had, you know, seven
- 31:59Speaker 2: to ten options to choose from. And they laid them
- 32:01Speaker 2: out on a table, you know, like, hey, which one
- 32:04Speaker 2: looks the best? And they chose this one. They chose
- 32:07Speaker 2: this one. One can only imagine how bad the other
- 32:10Speaker 2: ones must have been in salute to Germany back in
- 32:15Speaker 2: the Nazi era compared to this.
- 32:17Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 32:18Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 32:19Speaker 1: Do something better than that. Use some common sense.
- 32:22Speaker 2: What's up with all the marketing geniuses now running all
- 32:25Speaker 2: of the organizations? Football organizations ran by marketing professionals, quote-unquote?
- 32:35Speaker 1: It's bad.
- 32:36Speaker 3: JT, do we have what someone responded with, what the
- 32:38Speaker 3: new 49ers branding and logo is going to look like
- 32:40Speaker 3: in response to what they did?
- 32:45Speaker 1: That made me laugh, the hammer and sickle.
- 32:47Speaker 3: We're going to go Soviet. It's going to be Soviet
- 32:50Speaker 3: night at Levi's Stadium as the 49ers get ready to
- 32:53Speaker 3: battle the Third Reich and the Nazi Party. I mean,
- 32:59Speaker 3: this is just terrible, terrible decision-making by the Atlanta Falcons.
- 33:03Speaker 3: Trey in our YouTube chat chimes in and says, The
- 33:07Speaker 3: flag protects LeBron's protest. It's not disrespectful when the sitting
- 33:11Speaker 3: president threatens nuclear war, is a rapist, etc., Also, Vrabel
- 33:15Speaker 3: is a scumbag, was his response to that. Yes, the
- 33:19Speaker 3: flag and the Constitution protects your right to protest. This
- 33:24Speaker 3: is not a protest. This is LeBron James being a brat.
- 33:29Speaker 3: And being intentionally, I'm just not going to do this
- 33:32Speaker 3: because I don't like the president. And you were incorrect
- 33:35Speaker 3: to say that the American flag represents one president. You
- 33:38Speaker 3: can hate the president all you want, Trey, or anybody else.
- 33:41Speaker 1: It does not.
- 33:42Speaker 3: Represent one sitting president. I've disagreed with a number of presidents.
- 33:47Speaker 3: and their stances on things. I believe there are other
- 33:50Speaker 3: criminals who have been in office as the president of
- 33:53Speaker 3: the United States. But when you see the flag, think
- 33:56Speaker 3: about the men and women who serve our damn country.
- 33:58Speaker 1: It represents every American, not one party.
- 34:00Speaker 3: That are in forward territories, in areas of hostility that
- 34:05Speaker 3: are out there protecting us right now. That's who I
- 34:07Speaker 3: think about when I see the flag, the whole of
- 34:10Speaker 3: the United States. The whole of the United States is
- 34:13Speaker 3: not one man. or one woman, or one president. Hell,
- 34:16Speaker 3: LeBron James, in this summary I read of his problem
- 34:19Speaker 3: with Donald Trump, has said that. I'm not going to
- 34:22Speaker 3: let America stand for this one racist guy who is
- 34:25Speaker 3: the president of the U.S. That's what LeBron James said
- 34:27Speaker 3: at one point. It cannot stand for just that. Well,
- 34:30Speaker 3: then put some truth behind your words there and make
- 34:34Speaker 3: sure you're showing that that flag doesn't represent one person
- 34:37Speaker 3: that you disagree with, or hate, or dislike, or whatever
- 34:40Speaker 3: word you want to throw into it.
- 34:43Speaker 2: Those serving our country, they serve the country no matter
- 34:47Speaker 2: who's in office. We know several of those people, Chad,
- 34:50Speaker 2: who have served many different tours. And several different presidents
- 34:55Speaker 2: have been in office during those times. And they protected
- 34:58Speaker 2: both of them, too. Chad, coming up, one could only
- 35:02Speaker 2: imagine what the TriStar would look like with a new logo.
- 35:05Speaker 2: Had the Titans rebranded, much like the Falcons. we discussed
- 35:11Speaker 2: the opportunity for the Tennessee Titans to actually win back-to-back games.
- 35:15Speaker 2: They can do that on Sunday. Sutton and Withrow presented

- 36:14Speaker 1: Chad, the Tennessee Titans.
- 36:16Speaker 2: Who would have thought that the Titans are coming into
- 36:20Speaker 2: a week where they just need to beat the Cleveland
- 36:22Speaker 2: Browns in order to win back-to-back games. And they can
- 36:27Speaker 2: do that and they can tell a lot of demons
- 36:31Speaker 2: of the last four years, hey, GTFO, they have not
- 36:34Speaker 2: won back-to-back games yet. since November of 2022. This was
- 36:38Speaker 2: whenever John Robinson was the general manager. In fact, this
- 36:41Speaker 2: is the last really thing that anybody can point to
- 36:42Speaker 2: John Robinson for that's connected to the team, although this
- 36:45Speaker 2: roster is somehow still connected to J-Rob.
- 36:48Speaker 3: Oh, it's all his fault. You ask certain people, it's
- 36:52Speaker 3: all his and Vrabel's fault.
- 36:53Speaker 1: I mean, it's still to this day.
- 36:55Speaker 3: We've had multiple GMs come through now, multiple head coaches,
- 37:00Speaker 3: and somehow that big bad John Robinson is the root
- 37:03Speaker 3: of all evil. But I tell you what, when he
- 37:05Speaker 3: selected Isaiah Wilson, that one move just set the franchise
- 37:08Speaker 3: back to where we are right now so many years
- 37:11Speaker 3: later because of that. It's ridiculous. He made his mistakes,
- 37:15Speaker 3: but his hands are clean of this team now.
- 37:18Speaker 1: Give me a break. Yeah, exactly. It's been a while.
- 37:22Speaker 1: It's been a while.
- 37:23Speaker 3: November 17, 2022 was the exact date. We watched that
- 37:28Speaker 3: Thursday night game at Old Smoky where the Titans beat
- 37:32Speaker 3: the Green Bay Packers.
- 37:34Speaker 1: That night. That was the last time.
- 37:36Speaker 3: And it was four days before, November 13th, from Sunday
- 37:39Speaker 3: to a Thursday night football game, back-to-back wins for the Titans.
- 37:43Speaker 1: I don't have all the franchise NFL.
- 37:46Speaker 3: I'd like to know a longer streak of not winning
- 37:48Speaker 3: back-to-back games than the Tennessee Titans.
- 37:50Speaker 2: I'm sure it's the Lions or something. I could find it. JT,
- 37:54Speaker 2: see if you can look that up for us.
- 37:56Speaker 3: What's the longest a team has gone in between winning
- 37:59Speaker 3: consecutive football games in the NFL? Let's see if AI
- 38:04Speaker 3: can produce that for us quickly.
- 38:05Speaker 2: Doesn't it have to be the Lions or the Browns?
- 38:09Speaker 2: That's my initial guess.
- 38:11Speaker 3: Yes, I would guess one of those two teams. But
- 38:13Speaker 3: even them, I mean, maybe like the Tampa Bay Buccaneers
- 38:17Speaker 3: when they started out as an expansion team in 76.
- 38:20Speaker 2: They went like five years, maybe, until they won back-to-back. Well,
- 38:23Speaker 2: to your point, I mean, the Jets were awful last year.
- 38:26Speaker 2: They won back-to-back games last year. Who would have thought, too,
- 38:32Speaker 2: just going into the season, you think about the teams
- 38:35Speaker 2: that are really struggling, and you think about the Titans
- 38:40Speaker 2: are going to have the same record as the Chargers
- 38:43Speaker 2: going into last week, winless. The Titans by week five
- 38:47Speaker 2: are going to have the same record as the Los
- 38:49Speaker 2: Angeles Chargers. And by the way, they're going to be
- 38:54Speaker 2: facing the Colts who are going to be having a
- 38:57Speaker 2: down year, the Texans who are going to be coming
- 39:00Speaker 2: in with just one win. They're going to come in
- 39:04Speaker 2: with no wins. And you didn't know the Titans record,
- 39:06Speaker 2: but they're going to have the same record as the Chargers.
- 39:07Speaker 2: You'd be like, the Titans got off to a great start.
- 39:10Speaker 1: Great start. No, a worse start even than some of
- 39:14Speaker 1: these teams.
- 39:15Speaker 3: Brooks Carter, by the way, says he has a very
- 39:17Speaker 3: reliable database and he is looking it up right now
- 39:19Speaker 3: to let us know because he's now interested to see
- 39:21Speaker 3: if the Titans hold the record for longest time in
- 39:23Speaker 3: between consecutive games.
- 39:25Speaker 1: We'll compare it to him because the longest stretch... an NFL.
- 39:30Speaker 2: Franchise has gone without winning back-to-back games is 67 games
- 39:36Speaker 2: that has tracked the Dallas Cowboys from the mid 1965
- 39:40Speaker 2: to mid 1970.
- 39:42Speaker 1: So five years. The Titans nearly said it. Or they
- 39:46Speaker 1: still could.
- 39:46Speaker 3: Oh no, it's still very much alive. Let's not Let's
- 39:49Speaker 3: not get ahead of ourselves. Let's not act rash. They've
- 39:52Speaker 3: yet to beat the Cleveland Browns. The Titans could very
- 39:55Speaker 3: easily set this record if they go another season with this.
- 39:59Speaker 1: That's crazy.
- 40:00Speaker 3: The Dallas Cowboys were not the franchise I was thinking
- 40:03Speaker 3: that would be there. We'll have Brooks confirm, but that's
- 40:05Speaker 3: five years. Were they playing 16 then or 14 during
- 40:10Speaker 3: the season also?
- 40:11Speaker 1: Maybe 12 or 10. Yeah, so they could have.
- 40:13Speaker 3: It was longer than that.
- 40:14Speaker 1: From mid-65 to the.
- 40:16Speaker 3: Mid-70s, would be 10 years. Close to it. So maybe
- 40:22Speaker 3: playing 10 or 12 games. Oh, I took that to mean, okay,
- 40:25Speaker 3: 10 years. I took that to mean the season. It
- 40:28Speaker 3: said from mid-1965 to mid-1970.
- 40:31Speaker 2: Yeah, so not plural, just mid-1970, the year.
- 40:36Speaker 1: Okay.
- 40:37Speaker 3: I have a hard time believing that.
- 40:40Speaker 1: Mid-1965, the year, to mid-1970, the year. Well, you know what?
- 40:43Speaker 3: That's why AI is smarter than we are. I'm sure
- 40:45Speaker 3: they're right and I'm wrong, but that's... That's a tough
- 40:48Speaker 3: one to buy, that it was a 10-year stretch. But
- 40:51Speaker 3: the Titans, by number of games, Hutton, could certainly get
- 40:55Speaker 3: to that point.
- 40:56Speaker 1: Brooks will tell us soon.
- 40:57Speaker 2: So the question would be, this is a game where
- 41:01Speaker 2: the Browns have a very good, very good run defense. Chad,
- 41:06Speaker 2: you found that out because you took the over for
- 41:09Speaker 2: Derrick Henry rushing yards last week, right?
- 41:13Speaker 1: Or two weeks ago?
- 41:14Speaker 3: No, I didn't take anything with Derrick Henry last week.
- 41:16Speaker 3: I don't think Derrick Henry scored. He had very few
- 41:18Speaker 3: points for a fantasy team.
- 41:20Speaker 1: He did.
- 41:21Speaker 2: Anytime touchdown, he did score. He did score a touchdown
- 41:23Speaker 2: from short yardage. And I believe it was on a
- 41:26Speaker 2: Wildcat deal. But he was shut down. I mean, he
- 41:30Speaker 2: had very little to work with against the Browns defense.
- 41:32Speaker 2: They're going to shut Tony Pollard down. That's just what
- 41:35Speaker 2: they do. And what does that mean? Well, it means
- 41:37Speaker 2: that Cam Ward's going to have to throw the football.
- 41:40Speaker 2: And I just, do I trust that?
- 41:42Speaker 3: No.
- 41:43Speaker 2: I don't trust that. I trust Carnell Tate, but I
- 41:47Speaker 2: don't trust the accuracy of the quarterback. And it's not
- 41:49Speaker 2: like he's going to get the ball to anybody else
- 41:52Speaker 2: in this. Gunnar Helm has been non-existent. Is Calvin Ridley
- 41:55Speaker 2: on this team? I haven't heard his name in a
- 41:59Speaker 2: long time. Wandel Robinson is used, but in a limited variety.
- 42:06Speaker 2: It's Carl Taylor bust or the run game.
- 42:09Speaker 3: Do you remember when the Titans were an organization that
- 42:11Speaker 3: would bring in a free agent or someone and they
- 42:13Speaker 3: would thrive? Like Delaney Walker. Delaney Walker was the last one.
- 42:18Speaker 3: You know, like Delaney Walker would come in. But like
- 42:20Speaker 3: for years, there was always someone. They didn't hit on everybody,
- 42:24Speaker 3: but there'd be someone they'd bring in that wasn't much
- 42:27Speaker 3: somewhere else.
- 42:28Speaker 1: And they really improved when they got the Titans. Nate Washington.
- 42:30Speaker 3: Kyle VandenBosch going years back.
- 42:32Speaker 1: Nate Washington. Nate Washington's a good one.
- 42:34Speaker 3: Nate Washington, a great example. Kyle VandenBosch. There were guys
- 42:38Speaker 3: who the Titans got a hold of.
- 42:39Speaker 1: Logan Ryan. Logan Ryan, a great example.
- 42:42Speaker 3: Who's been that guy since Rand Carthon took over? Who
- 42:46Speaker 3: is the guy that you would say came in as
- 42:48Speaker 3: a free agent, thrived with this organization, played better? And look,
- 42:53Speaker 3: some of this is separate of the players around them.
- 42:56Speaker 3: You can have a really good individual season and be
- 42:59Speaker 3: on a bad team. You're allowed to do that. I
- 43:01Speaker 3: can't remember the guy who did that where you thought,
- 43:04Speaker 3: I didn't expect this out of him based on what
- 43:06Speaker 3: he's done. Instead, you get a bunch of legerious sneeds
- 43:09Speaker 3: who are overpaid that come in to do a job
- 43:11Speaker 3: that don't do it for any number of reasons. Elante Taylor,
- 43:14Speaker 3: I mean, a healthy scratch. And Elante Taylor was told he.
- 43:17Speaker 1: Needed a reset.
- 43:19Speaker 3: He didn't seem too happy about it when they interviewed
- 43:21Speaker 3: him at his locker. About being scratched from the lineup.
- 43:25Speaker 2: Well, now they're going to move him inside. The talk
- 43:28Speaker 2: is they're going to move him inside and have him
- 43:30Speaker 2: play the slot after they signed him to play the
- 43:31Speaker 2: outside corner. He hasn't been able to handle the coverages
- 43:35Speaker 2: is what I heard it described by the media. To me,
- 43:38Speaker 2: it's like you've got to be able to play on
- 43:40Speaker 2: the outside one-on-one. And here's the other problem with this.
- 43:45Speaker 2: Salah's defense, the pass rush has to be able to
- 43:48Speaker 2: get to the quarterback. Now, they did that last week.
- 43:51Speaker 2: They did that last week. But it all starts up
- 43:54Speaker 2: front with Silas' defense and then works its way back.
- 43:57Speaker 2: It helps the corners because you can get to the
- 44:00Speaker 2: quarterback with four or they're bringing heat. But it's really
- 44:03Speaker 2: about the four and the rotation, right? If you go back,
- 44:06Speaker 2: I went back and looked at the San Francisco. San
- 44:07Speaker 2: Francisco had a ton of injuries. If you go back
- 44:10Speaker 2: last year to like week 12, just randomly pick a
- 44:13Speaker 2: week in the second half of the season and look
- 44:15Speaker 2: at who he's working with, a defensive coordinator, and who
- 44:18Speaker 2: he's rushing the passer with, I don't know these guys.
- 44:21Speaker 2: I've never heard of these dudes. And they're still routinely
- 44:24Speaker 2: getting after the quarterback. Last week's the first time we've
- 44:26Speaker 2: seen that. Can they continue to do that against Deshaun Watson,
- 44:30Speaker 2: who all of a sudden, Deshaun Watson is looking pretty good.
- 44:34Speaker 2: He's looking closer to the quarterback he was prior to
- 44:37Speaker 2: going through all of the legal stuff that he went through.
- 44:43Speaker 2: The Titans are in a good spot, but a tough spot.
- 44:45Speaker 2: Because they come in at least with a little momentum.
- 44:49Speaker 2: But they're in a tough spot because the momentum's not
- 44:51Speaker 2: with their quarterback. It's not like the quarterback made some.
- 44:54Speaker 2: He made two good throws that I remember. He made
- 44:57Speaker 2: more than two. But two throws that are part of
- 45:00Speaker 2: the description of why they won the game. It's the
- 45:01Speaker 2: third down throw to Cardinal Tate that ended up in
- 45:03Speaker 2: a field goal after the Jeffrey Simmons forced fumble to recovery.
- 45:07Speaker 2: And then later, it was the touchdown... that he threw
- 45:10Speaker 2: to Carnell Tate in the back corner of the end zone.
- 45:12Speaker 2: Both great catches, but also good throws. Other than that,
- 45:16Speaker 2: it's not like he had anything going for him. The
- 45:18Speaker 2: first half was abysmal. Got to do more than what
- 45:22Speaker 2: we've seen. A lot more to beat this team coming
- 45:25Speaker 2: in on Sunday.
- 45:26Speaker 1: Absolutely. I'm totally with you. By the way, I've read
- 45:28Speaker 1: that wrong.
- 45:29Speaker 3: It wasn't mid-1970s. It was mid-1970s. So yeah, 65 to mid-70s.
- 45:32Speaker 3: So apologies. I was reading that incorrectly. David in the
- 45:38Speaker 3: YouTube chat pointed that out as well.
- 45:40Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 45:40Speaker 1: So five years.
- 45:41Speaker 3: So the Titans could break the record. If they don't
- 45:43Speaker 3: win this week, I don't know that they're going to
- 45:45Speaker 3: win two consecutive. I mean, again, I said this about
- 45:48Speaker 3: the Texans game too. Are you going to get a
- 45:49Speaker 3: better opportunity than an 0-4 team at home? And they
- 45:52Speaker 3: lost 26-3 in that game. Are you going to get
- 45:56Speaker 3: a better opportunity than a game that's basically a pick-em
- 45:59Speaker 3: with the Cleveland Browns at home coming off a win
- 46:02Speaker 3: to win two in a row this year? Looking at
- 46:05Speaker 3: the schedule, I don't know that you're going to have
- 46:06Speaker 3: a lot of great opportunities. So this thing could go
- 46:09Speaker 3: into year five with not winning two consecutive games.
- 46:14Speaker 2: Man.
- 46:15Speaker 1: And it goes into the new stadium.
- 46:17Speaker 3: Also, the NFL is not the NFL of 1965. No.
- 46:22Speaker 1: Right now.
- 46:23Speaker 3: This is a different era. You have more opportunities to
- 46:25Speaker 3: win back-to-back. Yes, and everything's built to promote parity. Where
- 46:29Speaker 3: you just don't.
- 46:30Speaker 1: That's what.
- 46:31Speaker 3: College football fans and SEC fans are having a hard
- 46:33Speaker 3: time adjusting to the new reality in college football, which
- 46:36Speaker 3: is parity. Every week is its new story, and you
- 46:42Speaker 3: don't really know what's going to happen. There's a lot
- 46:44Speaker 3: of unpredictability between teams because the bad teams have gotten better,
- 46:49Speaker 3: and the greatest of teams aren't quite as dominant and
- 46:52Speaker 3: deep as they were even three to five years ago.
- 46:56Speaker 3: That's the NFL. That's the NFL model. So it makes
- 46:59Speaker 3: it even more improbable for a Titans team in the
- 47:02Speaker 3: 2020s to not win two consecutive games than it did
- 47:05Speaker 3: for the Dallas Cowboys in the mid-60s.
- 47:08Speaker 2: One thing I do know, Chad, is Jeffrey Simmons is
- 47:11Speaker 2: playing lights out at his position, man. I mean, he
- 47:17Speaker 2: is a conqueror in the middle. He gets after it, dude.
- 47:20Speaker 1: It's fun to watch.
- 47:22Speaker 2: If anything, he's worth whatever low ticket price people are
- 47:26Speaker 2: paying to go to these games.
- 47:27Speaker 3: Do you think Jeffrey Simmons would like to get traded
- 47:29Speaker 3: to a contender?
- 47:31Speaker 1: Man, I've thought about this for a while.
- 47:34Speaker 3: Does he really want to be in Nashville? Not Nashville
- 47:36Speaker 3: as a city, not that he hates the city, but
- 47:39Speaker 3: do you think that he really wants to be a
- 47:41Speaker 3: part of this organization right now, or would he be
- 47:44Speaker 3: thrilled if he got traded to the Buffalo Bills? I'm
- 47:48Speaker 3: just throwing a team out there that's going to be
- 47:50Speaker 3: a contender.
- 47:50Speaker 2: Right now, personally, he bought into the defensive-minded head coach,
- 47:55Speaker 2: I mean, everyone did. Sala, because of the Brian Dable addition, too.
- 48:00Speaker 2: You know, the young quarterback, you finally, you're headed in
- 48:03Speaker 2: the right direction in terms of the coach you had
- 48:05Speaker 2: versus the coach you just hired, right? You have more
- 48:09Speaker 2: of an alpha mentality, guys who have been there and
- 48:11Speaker 2: done that, who know what they got right and what
- 48:14Speaker 2: they got wrong and how they're going to change, and
- 48:18Speaker 2: a coach that was going to be in his favor.
- 48:20Speaker 2: And then it's still like this? The problem is no
- 48:23Speaker 2: one else in the locker room is like him. So, yeah,
- 48:26Speaker 2: I mean, I want to win championships. I want to
- 48:28Speaker 2: be like Derrick Henry is the way I would think
- 48:30Speaker 2: about it, Chad. At some point, you want to go win.
- 48:33Speaker 2: And I don't– he wasn't a part of the good runs.
- 48:37Speaker 2: He's been a part of some really down years, Simmons has. So,
- 48:42Speaker 2: Brown's coming in off a victory last Sunday. They boast
- 48:44Speaker 2: one of the top defenses. They're 4-2. Look at what
- 48:47Speaker 2: Vegas has done. The bad teams are actually starting to
- 48:50Speaker 2: win a little bit. And meantime, you've got Jordan Elliott deal.
- 48:53Speaker 2: You've got Elante Taylor being benched. It's the lowest total
- 48:56Speaker 2: on the board right now. This is a combined total
- 49:00Speaker 2: of 36.5 to 37.5 total points. The defense can play
- 49:05Speaker 2: really well and still lose by 14. I wouldn't want
- 49:08Speaker 2: to be a part of it.
- 49:09Speaker 1: No.
- 49:10Speaker 3: Brooks letting us know that he's getting the rest of
- 49:13Speaker 3: the info, but the Titans currently are at 64 games
- 49:16Speaker 3: without consecutive games won.
- 49:19Speaker 1: So they're 3-1. from the Cowboys.
- 49:21Speaker 3: The Cowboys probably started late in the 65 season and
- 49:25Speaker 3: then went early in that fifth season. That's why they're
- 49:28Speaker 3: so close in actual games. And they didn't play as
- 49:31Speaker 3: many games. I think they played 14 then, so that
- 49:34Speaker 3: would make the difference in the years also instead of
- 49:36Speaker 3: 17 now.
- 49:38Speaker 1: So he's going to get the rest of the.
- 49:39Speaker 3: Info for us, but If that's true, Hutton, the Titans are,
- 49:42Speaker 3: if they lose the Browns, they are two more games away.
- 49:45Speaker 3: If they don't win the next two, essentially, they'd have
- 49:48Speaker 3: to win consecutively. After that, they will have set the
- 49:51Speaker 3: NFL record for longest streak of not winning consecutive football games.
- 49:56Speaker 1: That is atrocious.
- 49:59Speaker 3: David Griffin says in the chat also, the Titans quarterback
- 50:02Speaker 3: stats are also like the mid-1960s currently with the passing statistics.
- 50:06Speaker 1: Well said, David. Well done.
- 50:09Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 50:10Speaker 2: This is a quarterback who had 36 different games in
- 50:13Speaker 2: college with over 300 yards passing. We've yet to see
- 50:19Speaker 2: Cam Ward pass for over 200. He's coming off a
- 50:22Speaker 2: game where he passed for 102. They average 14 points
- 50:24Speaker 2: per game. Jeffrey Simmons has to have a defense that
- 50:28Speaker 2: only allows 13. Titans have cashed the under, by the way,
- 50:31Speaker 2: in four of six games.
- 50:34Speaker 3: Even in this game, though, Hutton, the pass game and
- 50:37Speaker 3: the win with Cam Ward, I'm watching him and thinking,
- 50:39Speaker 3: he He plays the game like a lackadaisical flag football
- 50:42Speaker 3: player at times. Even when he escapes pressure.
- 50:45Speaker 1: He's not moving his feet.
- 50:47Speaker 3: It looks so odd when he's just all running it
- 50:50Speaker 3: to someone. There's no adjustment or improvement with this is
- 50:54Speaker 3: how your feet should look when you throw the football.
- 50:57Speaker 3: It's like he's stubborn to the point of, I'm going
- 50:59Speaker 3: to look like I'm playing fraternity flag football as a
- 51:03Speaker 3: quarterback no matter what, and you can't tell me how
- 51:05Speaker 3: to play the game. And that's going to get him
- 51:07Speaker 3: cut and out of this league.
- 51:09Speaker 2: 11 games left in the season. The death march could
- 51:11Speaker 2: be on here with Cam Ward at quarterback. I say
- 51:14Speaker 2: that could be because it'll take an injury. And I'm
- 51:16Speaker 2: not rooting on that for him. But that's the only
- 51:19Speaker 2: way you'll see the backup. And, yeah, it's the Titans. No,
- 51:23Speaker 2: I'm not picking them in this game. 19 points from
- 51:26Speaker 2: special teams.
- 51:26Speaker 1: Go ahead.
- 51:27Speaker 3: Brooks lets us know in the YouTube chat, the Browns
- 51:29Speaker 3: had a 65-game streak of no consecutive wins from 2014-20.
- 51:34Speaker 1: To 2018. Okay.
- 51:35Speaker 3: That includes an 0-16 team in there.
- 51:37Speaker 1: There you go.
- 51:38Speaker 3: The Cleveland Browns come to Nashville to play the Tennessee Titans.
- 51:41Speaker 1: I was going to say Browns or Lions.
- 51:43Speaker 3: So if these numbers line up, if the Browns win,
- 51:47Speaker 3: they would then tie the Titans. They would force them
- 51:50Speaker 3: into a tie with matching the Browns from 10 years
- 51:54Speaker 3: ago with their 65-game streak of not winning consecutive games. Wow.
- 52:00Speaker 1: That's the headline.
- 52:02Speaker 3: You get stats like that on shows like this, ladies
- 52:04Speaker 3: and gentlemen. Well done by JT and Brooks putting that together,
- 52:07Speaker 3: and well done by me for asking the right questions
- 52:10Speaker 3: so these guys could get to work on getting us
- 52:12Speaker 3: the stats. But history is on the line at Nissan Stadium,
- 52:16Speaker 3: old Nissan Stadium, this weekend, Hutton, when the Browns and
- 52:19Speaker 3: Titans play.
- 52:19Speaker 1: How about that?
- 52:20Speaker 2: It's a Jim Nance-worthy game right there. Hey, coming up,
- 52:23Speaker 2: Arch is edgy. That's straight ahead here on Hutton & Withrow.
