- 0:29Speaker 1: Their next preseason game is this Saturday, with Melo Reys
- 0:32Speaker 1: and Mike Quick calling all the action here on your
- 0:35Speaker 1: home for Eagles Football in South Jersey ninety seven three ESPN.
- 0:39Speaker 1: But before we get there, we got inner squad practices
- 0:43Speaker 1: and that's where Adam kaplan on his way joining us
- 0:47Speaker 1: to Foxborough, Massachusetts as the Eagles and Patriots square off.
- 0:53Speaker 2: Adam, how are you doing today.
- 0:56Speaker 3: Josha, I'm well, hope you deal well. So I am
- 0:59Speaker 3: driving to Boxborough, Massachusetts some halfway there for the Eagles
- 1:04Speaker 3: joint practices. We're really going to get a better idea
- 1:07Speaker 3: of where the Eagles are apt because they've got this
- 1:09Speaker 3: brand new offensive scheme. Uh and we're gonna see the
- 1:12Speaker 3: one versus the ones. We'll get into that what that
- 1:14Speaker 3: looks like. But they're looking forward to it for two
- 1:17Speaker 3: days of practice. You know, I've done it when there's
- 1:20Speaker 3: been one. I've done it when they've been two, and
- 1:21Speaker 3: it's always good get two days in.
- 1:25Speaker 1: So explain to the audience who you know may not
- 1:28Speaker 1: be as familiar with how this actually works, because I
- 1:31Speaker 1: think understanding why teams do this and the value that
- 1:36Speaker 1: comes from this. For why the Eagles and Patriots are
- 1:39Speaker 1: getting together this week.
- 1:42Speaker 3: Yeah, so a couple of things here. Nick Sirianni, the
- 1:44Speaker 3: Eagles head coach, and Mike Braball, the Patriots head coach.
- 1:47Speaker 3: They love get having these joint practices with their opponents
- 1:52Speaker 3: in a particularly whether they're the road team or the
- 1:54Speaker 3: home team, because they they really want to get an
- 1:57Speaker 3: idea of whether players are at because instead of coming
- 1:59Speaker 3: against your your own players all the time, they'd really
- 2:02Speaker 3: like to see your your first team offense versus the
- 2:07Speaker 3: opponent's first team offense. Now we'll get into the scripting
- 2:12Speaker 3: of it and how you do it, because I've talked
- 2:14Speaker 3: to coaches and put off with people about how they
- 2:16Speaker 3: like doing these things. But it's it's real important for teams, Josh.
- 2:21Speaker 3: They want to get an idea of where their teams
- 2:24Speaker 3: are at and how they and how they want to
- 2:27Speaker 3: do it going forward and how they adjust off of it.
- 2:30Speaker 3: They want to see certain parts of their team and
- 2:33Speaker 3: where it stands. And you can't really do it so
- 2:35Speaker 3: much against your own people because they know your own plays.
- 2:38Speaker 3: Whereas Mike Frable Eagles up first team offense, well, Vrabel's
- 2:42Speaker 3: never seen it. He knows they run a West coast,
- 2:45Speaker 3: but he has no idea what it's going to look like.
- 2:47Speaker 3: Because Sean man has never caught plays before. See, he
- 2:49Speaker 3: don't know what what it's going to look like. There's
- 2:51Speaker 3: so much value and seeing how your first team offense
- 2:55Speaker 3: does against the Patriots first team defense.
- 2:58Speaker 1: How much value also is it, Adam, not just for
- 3:01Speaker 1: the coaches, but for the players. You know, we heard
- 3:03Speaker 1: Sean Manning yesterday talk about how, you know, a lot
- 3:06Speaker 1: of the offense was derieled in the first preseason game
- 3:09Speaker 1: because of the penalties and guys not being on the
- 3:12Speaker 1: same page. So talk about the importance for the players
- 3:15Speaker 1: with these two days.
- 3:18Speaker 3: Oh yeah, Josh, Actually, this is an important point you
- 3:20Speaker 3: brought up. So let's look. The Eagles had seven offensive penalties, Okay,
- 3:27Speaker 3: three of them killed three nice plays. Now what you
- 3:31Speaker 3: do is now again, I was second third team offense
- 3:34Speaker 3: in some of the fourteam offense, no starters. But the
- 3:37Speaker 3: fact of matter is they had a bunch of mental
- 3:39Speaker 3: errors from physical errors. Those two's could go up against
- 3:45Speaker 3: the New England second team defense, they could actually run
- 3:49Speaker 3: the same play. Because the practices are scripted, Josh, what
- 3:54Speaker 3: will happen tonight, Mike Rabel and Nick Sirianni with your
- 3:58Speaker 3: meet tonight or tomorrow morning, well before practice to run
- 4:02Speaker 3: by their staff what they want to run, and New
- 4:06Speaker 3: England could say, yes, we're good that or no, or okay,
- 4:09Speaker 3: we like that. We ratther not do this? How about this?
- 4:12Speaker 3: This is what coaches have told me. They have to
- 4:14Speaker 3: run it by. They're all scripted and and we'll get
- 4:18Speaker 3: into that in a minute. What that looks like. What
- 4:19Speaker 3: kind of scripting it looks like? But there's no question
- 4:22Speaker 3: there's tremendous value and make of those corrections because the
- 4:26Speaker 3: Eagles backups on not just offense, Mike, defensively, excuse me, Josh,
- 4:31Speaker 3: they made so many mistakes defensively. Did you see what
- 4:35Speaker 3: the Ravens quarterbacks did against them?
- 4:39Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 4:39Speaker 1: I think that is a big part of it, Adam.
- 4:41Speaker 1: You know, you what the Ravens did to the Eagles.
- 4:44Speaker 1: You know, the Ravens on both sides of the ball
- 4:47Speaker 1: looked really good for three quarters, and the Eagles looked
- 4:51Speaker 1: like the team that you know is one of the
- 4:53Speaker 1: worst teams of football. But then you got to remember
- 4:56Speaker 1: you got third and four string guys in there, right, Adam.
- 4:58Speaker 3: Exactly right. And one thing to understand, And I know
- 5:02Speaker 3: it's hard because I so on our YouTube comments, people
- 5:06Speaker 3: are really upset. I I understand, but understand, folks, It's
- 5:11Speaker 3: not like going to get to the regular season eleven
- 5:14Speaker 3: backups will be starting. It doesn't work that way. A
- 5:18Speaker 3: lot of these guys will not even play on offensive defense,
- 5:20Speaker 3: a lot of role play on special teams. Someone won't
- 5:22Speaker 3: eveuild the football team, somebody in the practice squad. I
- 5:26Speaker 3: understand that you're frustration and anger. I read the comments.
- 5:29Speaker 3: We don't We don't comment a lot on our board. Well,
- 5:33Speaker 3: you know, we monitor them for foul language, personal all
- 5:35Speaker 3: that crazy stuff, but you know, we let people generally
- 5:38Speaker 3: say what they want. But man, the frustration level, because
- 5:42Speaker 3: I think what's happened here, Gosh, the offense has been
- 5:47Speaker 3: intriguing in trading camp. It's been a little bit better
- 5:49Speaker 3: than I expected from execution standpoints. Clearly up and down
- 5:53Speaker 3: as we expected, but there's been a lot of good
- 5:56Speaker 3: And when that when that when the fans actually get
- 6:00Speaker 3: to watch it because they don't get into training camp
- 6:02Speaker 3: Unlet's say, if a business relationship with Eagles or their
- 6:04Speaker 3: season ticket holders, they don't select season ticket holders, they
- 6:07Speaker 3: don't get to see practice. So they watched this game.
- 6:11Speaker 3: The performances were terrible mostly and they're like, oh, this
- 6:15Speaker 3: is ridiculous. So I feel you. But again, it doesn't
- 6:19Speaker 3: really matter in the scheme of things. Just relax a
- 6:22Speaker 3: little bit. I'll be there. Andrew Decheco is already there Boxboro.
- 6:27Speaker 3: I'll join him tomorrow. We taught like it is. We
- 6:30Speaker 3: don't sugarcoat anything. We try to give context.
- 6:33Speaker 1: Everything, and that's why we're excited here for football on
- 6:36Speaker 1: four powered by the Inside of Birds podcast. We got
- 6:38Speaker 1: Adam and Andrew on the ground, gonna give us reports
- 6:42Speaker 1: tomorrow and Thursday, and then Jeff Musher will be the
- 6:46Speaker 1: recap at all on Friday. Here on ninety seven three ESPN.
- 6:49Speaker 1: Adams just speaking to the offense for a moment with
- 6:52Speaker 1: a new offensive coordinator. You mentioned before, a guy's never
- 6:55Speaker 1: called plays in the NFL before.
- 6:58Speaker 2: What do you think is going to be the.
- 7:00Speaker 1: Biggest thing the Eagles want to get from these two
- 7:03Speaker 1: days with Sean Mannion in the offense, UH, timing.
- 7:09Speaker 3: Checktion, better limit the preset penalties, no doubt about that.
- 7:15Speaker 3: You get off to a good start. Now. I don't
- 7:19Speaker 3: have the Patriot ginger report, but like they're gonna see
- 7:23Speaker 3: guys like as long as they're healthy, Milton Williams, Christian Gonzales,
- 7:27Speaker 3: a lot of big time NFL talent, some very underrated
- 7:31Speaker 3: players that new Land has in their defense. I remember
- 7:34Speaker 3: talking to someone with the Patriots after the Super Bowl
- 7:37Speaker 3: who said that Milton Williams in the final quarter of
- 7:40Speaker 3: their season he dealt with I think a high ankles frame,
- 7:42Speaker 3: but once he got healthy, he actually carried them some weeks.
- 7:45Speaker 3: It's a phenomenal football player, obviously the Eagles know very well.
- 7:49Speaker 3: And I just I would like to see Wix who
- 7:54Speaker 3: obviously they held him out, and we don't know about
- 7:57Speaker 3: DeVante Smith because he's just getting back to practice. He's
- 8:00Speaker 3: been two weeks from the hamstring. Hopefully we'll see you
- 8:04Speaker 3: a little bit of Johnny Wilson. You know they were
- 8:06Speaker 3: down four receivers Eagles were in the preseason game. So
- 8:09Speaker 3: you like to see a lot of these guys practicing.
- 8:12Speaker 3: And then let's see how Hurtz does Josh against the
- 8:16Speaker 3: first team defense. This is great. This is like the
- 8:18Speaker 3: value that coaches get. And also, and I want to
- 8:22Speaker 3: get into the scripting because that's really important. You want
- 8:25Speaker 3: to see, also, Josh, the timing part about it. It's
- 8:29Speaker 3: not like Vrabel and his defensive coaches has never seen
- 8:33Speaker 3: the West Coast offense before. Then they're going to see that,
- 8:35Speaker 3: but they don't know what type of one they're going
- 8:37Speaker 3: to see.
- 8:38Speaker 2: Yeah, so get you that out of it.
- 8:39Speaker 1: Explain to the audience what you mean by scripting case.
- 8:43Speaker 1: I think people they've probably seen like the concept, like
- 8:46Speaker 1: on a HBO Hard Knocks or something, but they might
- 8:49Speaker 1: not fully understand what that actually on a deeper level means.
- 8:53Speaker 3: All right, So this is what coaches have told me
- 8:57Speaker 3: over the years. They want to work on red zone,
- 9:00Speaker 3: two minute, four minute goal line, certain personnel group ins.
- 9:05Speaker 3: They want to see how the defense reacts, not their
- 9:07Speaker 3: defense which they've ran and running their own practice. They
- 9:10Speaker 3: want to see that by the way the Patriots went
- 9:12Speaker 3: at thirty four. Egals run at thirty four, but they're
- 9:14Speaker 3: running fantrio. They're running way more zone defense than man
- 9:19Speaker 3: and their coverage responsibilities are different than the Patriots are defenses.
- 9:24Speaker 3: So they want to see how the Patriots defense reacts.
- 9:26Speaker 3: So they'll submit what they want to run to Vraybel.
- 9:31Speaker 3: The Vrabel will go over with Sirianni. I don't know.
- 9:34Speaker 3: I don't know that the coordinators will be there or not,
- 9:36Speaker 3: but you know they'll want to go through this gosh,
- 9:40Speaker 3: and they'll they'll talk about it. The Patriots will submit
- 9:44Speaker 3: what they want to run, what they want to work on,
- 9:47Speaker 3: and it'll be fun. And I cannot wait to see
- 9:50Speaker 3: the Eagles first team defense and that phenomenal defensive line
- 9:53Speaker 3: against just an okay Patriot offensive line, just okay, and
- 9:58Speaker 3: Drake May who's a gunslinger and obviously a J. Brown,
- 10:02Speaker 3: and you know, the the drama of that, it's gonna
- 10:05Speaker 3: be kind of comical, you know. And and seeing Quinnon,
- 10:08Speaker 3: he's seeing Quinnon, seeing Mitchell versus a J. Brown or
- 10:12Speaker 3: well obviously will reequill and be on him. That's gonna
- 10:16Speaker 3: be talking about matchups. That's gonna happen one way or
- 10:19Speaker 3: the other. And Romeo Dobs, so I know they're really
- 10:22Speaker 3: excited about and some of the interesting offensive talent and
- 10:28Speaker 3: running back to Patriot sevn so lots of challenges and
- 10:31Speaker 3: the scripting of how it's gonna look. It's gonna be very,
- 10:33Speaker 3: very interesting.
- 10:34Speaker 1: And speaking of the defense, Adam, you know, talk about
- 10:37Speaker 1: who you're gonna be keeping eye on the defense side
- 10:39Speaker 1: of the ball, because we know that even though Fangio
- 10:43Speaker 1: he's established he's the play caller, we know what he is.
- 10:46Speaker 1: But there are some guys, as you and I talking
- 10:48Speaker 1: about on Friday, who are on this defense. They are
- 10:51Speaker 1: fighting for roster spots.
- 10:53Speaker 3: Oh good spot. Good point, because you know I was
- 10:56Speaker 3: thinking I was Sophy Andrew earlier today. One of the
- 11:00Speaker 3: biggest concerns that I have is the depth of corners
- 11:02Speaker 3: not very good, Fanjo. Not that we didn't know this,
- 11:05Speaker 3: We've told our Patreon members this five months ago. Vic
- 11:10Speaker 3: Fanjo does not want de Jene playing corner. If you
- 11:12Speaker 3: can help it now, Jonman Jones is hurt. We don't
- 11:16Speaker 3: know when he's gonna be ready. Okay, you start practicing fully, Okay.
- 11:20Speaker 3: Jacaran Bennetts heart he's not had a good camp. Mac
- 11:24Speaker 3: McWilliams up and down camp. The Eagles quality of depthic
- 11:27Speaker 3: corners are not very good. The Patriots can spread them out.
- 11:31Speaker 3: The Patriots are like six deep at receiver. Well, if
- 11:35Speaker 3: they run a lot of Leavin personnel gets the Eagles, Josh,
- 11:40Speaker 3: that's not good. Like, I want to see how they
- 11:42Speaker 3: react on your question. I'd love to see them spread
- 11:45Speaker 3: them out. I want to because you know what if
- 11:48Speaker 3: I'm Josh, if i am Vic Fango and Howie Roseman
- 11:55Speaker 3: Eagles shower manager, I want to know the quality of
- 11:58Speaker 3: my players going against my own players. I want to
- 12:01Speaker 3: see how they play in practice against our guys. And
- 12:05Speaker 3: there's no question this is a big deal. Really glad
- 12:07Speaker 3: you brought it up that way. A great way to
- 12:09Speaker 3: frame the question because they're going to learn about the
- 12:11Speaker 3: depth of corner. Okay, yep. The addresh step Arnold Lebackhetty,
- 12:17Speaker 3: they're really excited about, you know, playing him over four
- 12:19Speaker 3: million fully guaranteed. And my guy Jay alex Son, who's
- 12:22Speaker 3: been our number fifty eight, we're in Trent Cole's all number.
- 12:25Speaker 3: He's been our guy since he was drafted. We've been
- 12:27Speaker 3: high on him ever since he was drafted. We didn't
- 12:29Speaker 3: to keep you this goodness early. I want to see
- 12:31Speaker 3: how he goes against a team that was in the
- 12:34Speaker 3: super Bowl last season, Josh, and that that's what makes
- 12:36Speaker 3: this thing exciting. Should also mention to you, barring a
- 12:39Speaker 3: major surprise, the weather's going to be good, so we're
- 12:42Speaker 3: not going to have that problem. So this is gonna
- 12:44Speaker 3: be fascinating, Josh, to see how it all plays out.
- 12:48Speaker 1: And the other thing is Adam is not just you
- 12:50Speaker 1: know who these specific guys are, but you're going against
- 12:53Speaker 1: the quarterback who is extremely different than jillen Hurst.
- 12:56Speaker 2: Drake May is not risk averse like Hurts.
- 12:59Speaker 3: It No, he's very aggressive, he's a gunslinger. He's very athletic,
- 13:05Speaker 3: he can run, he's big, he's coachable. From what I'm told,
- 13:10Speaker 3: I am really looking forward to this man. And you
- 13:12Speaker 3: know what, with Hurts, I've noticed this in some practices, Josh.
- 13:17Speaker 3: He's made some throws where you go, wow, that's not
- 13:20Speaker 3: him from last year. So let's just let's just let's
- 13:25Speaker 3: just not assume that Hurts won't make those throws. I
- 13:29Speaker 3: know that's last year. I get that in years past,
- 13:32Speaker 3: but I'm I'm fascinated to see what happens here really, Am.
- 13:36Speaker 2: And we will hear all about it after Day one.
- 13:38Speaker 1: Tomorrow, Adam Cappel will join us for the next edition
- 13:40Speaker 1: of Football and four powered by the Inside the Birds podcast.
- 13:44Speaker 1: Inside the Birds dot com and follow Kaplan NFL on
- 13:48Speaker 1: exit Instagram for all of your NFL coverage.
- 13:51Speaker 2: Adam, safe travels. Talk to you tomorrow.
- 13:54Speaker 3: Thank you.
