- 0:00Speaker 1: Let us pray. And Jonathan cried after the lad, Make speed, haste,
- 0:07Speaker 1: stay not. Then Jonathan's lad gathered up the arrows and
- 0:11Speaker 1: came to his master. 1 Samuel 20.38 Dear God, as
- 0:18Speaker 1: my life continues to grow and evolve, I thank you
- 0:21Speaker 1: for blessing me with covenant relationships like David and Jonathan's.
- 0:26Speaker 1: When I'm on the verge of stepping into my destiny,
- 0:29Speaker 1: Bless me with friendships that have the inside scoop on
- 0:32Speaker 1: whomever is trying to cause me harm or hinder my purpose.
- 0:37Speaker 1: I pronounce love and favor as the main companions in
- 0:41Speaker 1: my friendships. I declare that the inner circle of friends
- 0:45Speaker 1: surrounding my life are purpose-driven and destiny-minded. Thank you, Lord,
- 0:52Speaker 1: that you are bringing the right people into my life
- 0:54Speaker 1: at the right time. From this day forward, I will
- 0:58Speaker 1: make the conscious decision to invest into my relationships and
- 1:03Speaker 1: ensure that our bond of friendship will be strong and purposeful.
- 1:09Speaker 1: Even when it seems like I'm in a season of
- 1:11Speaker 1: hiding and preparing, I will remain confident that distance and
- 1:16Speaker 1: time won't break the God connections surrounding my life. In Jesus' name, Amen.

- 1:46Speaker 2: The Bond of Friendship In our last story, we learned
- 1:50Speaker 2: how Saul sought to take David's life. Jealousy and rage
- 1:55Speaker 2: filled Saul, and he sent men to murder him. But
- 1:59Speaker 2: Jonathan saved David, and David escaped to Samuel. In this story,
- 2:05Speaker 2: we learn how Jonathan and David's friendship grows stronger. Jonathan
- 2:11Speaker 2: protects and nurtures David from the heavy hand of Saul,
- 2:14Speaker 2: as inspired by the book of 1 Samuel.
- 2:19Speaker 3: Hello, I'm Pastor Jack Graham with today's episode of the
- 2:22Speaker 3: Bible in a Year podcast. In our story yesterday, we
- 2:26Speaker 3: saw how Saul's jealousy spilled over in his desire to
- 2:30Speaker 3: destroy David. Saul could not take the praise and adulation
- 2:34Speaker 3: and adoration that was growing in the hearts of the
- 2:37Speaker 3: people for David. He knew he was losing his kingdom.
- 2:41Speaker 3: So he tried to kill David again and again. David
- 2:45Speaker 3: fled into Samuel's territory. And David was protected not only
- 2:49Speaker 3: by God but by Saul's own household, his son Jonathan
- 2:53Speaker 3: and David's wife Michael, the daughter of Saul. And today
- 2:56Speaker 3: we will see how Saul continues to pursue David and
- 2:59Speaker 3: how Jonathan once again protects the life of his dear friend.
- 3:03Speaker 3: Let's listen now to today's reading.
- 3:07Speaker 2: David and Jonathan sat sitting on a stone facing the
- 3:10Speaker 2: city below. Subtle tears welled up in David's eyes as
- 3:15Speaker 2: he watched the city from afar. What have I done
- 3:18Speaker 2: to deserve this from him? David said, shaking his head.
- 3:23Speaker 2: Jonathan sat there silently for a moment, allowing David to
- 3:27Speaker 2: feel the sting of betrayal. He put his hand on
- 3:31Speaker 2: David's shoulder and said, You shall not die, my friend.
- 3:35Speaker 2: My father does nothing without telling me first. I will
- 3:39Speaker 2: know if he tries anything else. David was not convinced.
- 3:44Speaker 2: He was still soaking up the view of the city.
- 3:47Speaker 2: He loved the people as his own sheep. The sun
- 3:50Speaker 2: was beginning its descent, and a mild orange filled the skies. David,
- 3:56Speaker 2: still looking forward, said, Your father knows we are closer
- 4:00Speaker 2: than brothers. He would not tell you of his plans
- 4:03Speaker 2: to kill me again. I'll do whatever you want, Jonathan said.
- 4:09Speaker 2: Tomorrow is the new moon, and your father is expecting
- 4:12Speaker 2: me to feast with him and the elders. I will
- 4:15Speaker 2: hide instead, and you will tell him I am in Bethlehem,
- 4:19Speaker 2: making a sacrifice with my clan. If your father is fine,
- 4:23Speaker 2: then we will know he means me no harm. If
- 4:26Speaker 2: your father is angry, we will know his heart. David
- 4:31Speaker 2: paused for a moment. He felt his tears returning. He
- 4:35Speaker 2: regained his composure and stood up. You and I have
- 4:39Speaker 2: made a promise to be friends. However, if you find
- 4:42Speaker 2: any guilt in me, you should kill me yourself. Jonathan
- 4:47Speaker 2: sprang to his feet and said, Nonsense. Come, let us
- 4:52Speaker 2: go out into the field. So the two walked through
- 4:55Speaker 2: the fields. Jonathan put his arm around David and said,
- 4:59Speaker 2: I shall send word of Saul's temperament. Jonathan paused and
- 5:04Speaker 2: became very serious.
- 5:05Speaker 3: Listen. Listen.
- 5:07Speaker 2: God will show you favor wherever you go. He will
- 5:11Speaker 2: exalt you as king and destroy all those that make
- 5:14Speaker 2: you their enemy. Please, show love to my house when
- 5:19Speaker 2: God removes your enemies. David took Jonathan's words very seriously
- 5:25Speaker 2: and the two of them made a covenant with one
- 5:27Speaker 2: another there in the field. Jonathan promised to serve David
- 5:32Speaker 2: and protect him and David swore to show Jonathan and
- 5:35Speaker 2: his entire household love and favor. Jonathan spoke again, saying,
- 5:42Speaker 2: In the next three days I will go out into
- 5:44Speaker 2: the field for target practice where you are hiding. I
- 5:47Speaker 2: will shoot three arrows towards you and send my servant
- 5:51Speaker 2: to go and retrieve them. If you hear me yell,
- 5:54Speaker 2: The arrows are on that side, it means the coast
- 5:58Speaker 2: is clear for you to return. If you hear me yell,
- 6:01Speaker 2: Go further, then that means Saul is still seeking your
- 6:05Speaker 2: life and you should flee. The two of them embraced
- 6:09Speaker 2: in parted ways. David loved Jonathan's soul as much as
- 6:13Speaker 2: his own, and there were no closer friends in all
- 6:16Speaker 2: of Israel. The moon festival had begun, and David's place
- 6:20Speaker 2: at the king's table was empty. Saul paid little attention
- 6:24Speaker 2: to David's absence, thinking he may have just been ill. However,
- 6:29Speaker 2: when the second day of the festival passed, Saul asked Jonathan, saying,'
- 6:33Speaker 2: Where is the son of Jesse?' Jonathan cleared his throat
- 6:38Speaker 2: and replied, David asked me if he could go back
- 6:41Speaker 2: to Bethlehem to make a sacrifice with his clan. His
- 6:44Speaker 2: brothers demanded it. Saul drove his knife into the table.
- 6:49Speaker 2: You stupid son of a whore, he yelled. Do you
- 6:53Speaker 2: think I'm a fool? I know you want him to
- 6:55Speaker 2: be king in your place. You shame yourself and your mother.
- 7:00Speaker 2: As long as David lives, you will never be king again.
- 7:04Speaker 2: Saul shoved his chair back and pointed to his servants. Go,
- 7:08Speaker 2: find David so I can slaughter him myself. Jonathan stood
- 7:12Speaker 2: up and yelled back at his father. Why should he
- 7:15Speaker 2: be put to death? As Jonathan was speaking, Saul took
- 7:19Speaker 2: his spear and hurled it at Jonathan. He missed, and
- 7:22Speaker 2: the spear was driven into the wall behind him. The
- 7:26Speaker 2: room was silent. Saul was huffing in anger. Jonathan met
- 7:30Speaker 2: his father's gaze with complete rage in his eyes. Jonathan
- 7:35Speaker 2: did not fear Saul, for he knew that the Lord
- 7:38Speaker 2: was with David. Jonathan said nothing and left the room
- 7:42Speaker 2: in a silent fury. The next morning, Jonathan went out
- 7:46Speaker 2: into the field with his servant for target practice. He
- 7:50Speaker 2: shot three arrows into the distance where he knew David
- 7:53Speaker 2: was hiding. He turned to his servant and said,' Start running.
- 7:57Speaker 2: You will find the arrows as I shoot them.' So
- 8:01Speaker 2: the boy ran unknowingly in David's direction. The boy was
- 8:05Speaker 2: close to where the arrows were, but Jonathan yelled, Keep running!
- 8:09Speaker 2: The arrow is still ahead of you!
- 8:11Speaker 3: Hurry!
- 8:12Speaker 2: Hurry! Do not wait even a moment! So the boy
- 8:15Speaker 2: ran faster, but the command to run was really for David.
- 8:19Speaker 2: He bowed in Jonathan's direction and fled into the wilderness
- 8:22Speaker 2: to escape the judgment of Saul. Although David was in hiding,
- 8:26Speaker 2: God's desire to use him was not finished. Neither would
- 8:30Speaker 2: there be separation between his heart.
- 8:34Speaker 3: Today's scripture begins with David and Jonathan having a conversation.
- 8:42Speaker 3: The mood is heavy because Saul is trying to kill
- 8:45Speaker 3: David and remove the threat to his own kingdom. But Jonathan,
- 8:49Speaker 3: though he is Saul's son, is loyal to David. He
- 8:52Speaker 3: knows that God has anointed this man to be the king.
- 8:56Speaker 3: Proverbs tells us that there is a friend that sticks
- 8:59Speaker 3: closer than a brother. And certainly, this is the relationship
- 9:02Speaker 3: between these two men, David and Jonathan. They are like brothers.
- 9:07Speaker 3: It is a beautiful example of the closeness and the
- 9:11Speaker 3: commitment that is stronger than even the bonds of family.
- 9:15Speaker 3: Jonathan wants to reassure David and says his father would
- 9:18Speaker 3: not do anything to David without telling Jonathan first. But
- 9:21Speaker 3: David has already had his life threatened by Saul on
- 9:25Speaker 3: multiple occasions. He is understandably anxious and he's certain that Saul,
- 9:30Speaker 3: knowing the closeness between these two, would hide his plans
- 9:32Speaker 3: from Jonathan. Jonathan promises to do whatever he needs to
- 9:37Speaker 3: do in order to help David. So David devises a plan.
- 9:41Speaker 3: Jonathan will tell his father that David has decided to
- 9:44Speaker 3: go to Bethlehem to offer sacrifices with his people there.
- 9:47Speaker 3: If Saul seems okay with that, David can rest easy.
- 9:50Speaker 3: But if he flies off into one of his now
- 9:53Speaker 3: characteristic tirades, Jonathan will know that he means harm to David.
- 9:58Speaker 3: So Jonathan tells David that he will do as he asks,
- 10:01Speaker 3: and he tells David how he will use a code
- 10:04Speaker 3: to get him the word of his safety. He would
- 10:06Speaker 3: shoot arrows for practice, and if he tells his servant
- 10:09Speaker 3: who goes to retrieve the arrows that they are farther out,
- 10:12Speaker 3: David will know to run. These two men swore an
- 10:16Speaker 3: oath to each other. and David promised to show kindness
- 10:19Speaker 3: to Jonathan's offspring no matter what would happen to Jonathan.
- 10:23Speaker 3: In 1 Samuel 20, verses 13 to 15, this is
- 10:27Speaker 3: what Jonathan says in God's Word. May the Lord be
- 10:30Speaker 3: with you as he has been with my father. If
- 10:33Speaker 3: I am still alive, show me the steadfast love of
- 10:36Speaker 3: the Lord that I may not die. And do not
- 10:39Speaker 3: cut off your steadfast love in my house forever when
- 10:42Speaker 3: the Lord cuts off every one of the enemies of
- 10:45Speaker 3: David from the face of the earth. Jonathan knew that
- 10:48Speaker 3: God had chosen David to be the king. Jonathan would
- 10:52Speaker 3: not stand in God's way. He would support God's man.
- 10:57Speaker 3: He only wanted to ensure that his offspring, his children
- 11:00Speaker 3: and their children, would not suffer for the sins of
- 11:02Speaker 3: their father or their grandfather. And so at the New
- 11:06Speaker 3: Moon Festival, Jonathan tells his father that David wanted to
- 11:09Speaker 3: go to Bethlehem to offer sacrifices. And Saul's response couldn't
- 11:13Speaker 3: be more clear. He is incensed and turns his anger
- 11:17Speaker 3: to his own son, cursing him for his loyalty to David. Saul,
- 11:22Speaker 3: in a fit of rage, accuses Jonathan of not caring
- 11:25Speaker 3: that someone else would be the king and not Jonathan.
- 11:28Speaker 3: And he's right. Jonathan would have been the rightful heir.
- 11:33Speaker 3: But Jonathan is not interested in power. He only wanted
- 11:37Speaker 3: to obey God. And clearly, God's plan, God's purpose, was
- 11:41Speaker 3: for David to rule. So Jonathan sends his message to David,
- 11:45Speaker 3: who bows in his friend's direction. He is deeply indebted
- 11:49Speaker 3: to his friend as he flees into the wilderness. David's
- 11:53Speaker 3: path to the throne would twist and turn even more
- 11:56Speaker 3: before he would finally become king. And tomorrow, we'll hear
- 12:00Speaker 3: how he continues to run for his life. Dear God,
- 12:03Speaker 3: we thank you for faithful friends, for the people in
- 12:07Speaker 3: our lives that love us, care for us, and always
- 12:10Speaker 3: seek our best. Thank you in this passage of Scripture
- 12:14Speaker 3: that we can learn about the loyalty of Jonathan and
- 12:17Speaker 3: David and practice that same kind of faithfulness with our
- 12:20Speaker 3: family and our friends. Help us to be friends that
- 12:24Speaker 3: others can trust with their very lives. In Jesus' name, amen.
