- 0:04Speaker 1: Hey, we're in We're back.
- 0:05Speaker 2: We're in Orlando right now and a lot of people
- 0:07Speaker 2: are leaving. But things are happening. This tends to happen.
- 0:11Speaker 2: Bob Knightingale USA Today regular on FT joining us right now,
- 0:15Speaker 2: give us the inside word on what you heard about
- 0:18Speaker 2: Pete Alonzo moving over to Baltimore and the Mets kind
- 0:21Speaker 2: of being like, man, we're not gonna throw an offer.
- 0:23Speaker 3: I don't think it's a surprise. Really, I don't think
- 0:25Speaker 3: they want them back. Last year David Turns, I thought
- 0:28Speaker 3: there was no way they're going to bring him back
- 0:30Speaker 3: this year. He wants to make that team his own way.
- 0:33Speaker 3: They grossly performed last year, big inner achievers. So hey,
- 0:38Speaker 3: he didn't care in Milwaukee. Remember when he traded Josh
- 0:40Speaker 3: Hater and he's doing his style.
- 0:43Speaker 1: What's not to like about Pete? They don't like his defense?
- 0:47Speaker 3: What's not to like?
- 0:48Speaker 1: They don't like his defense? What's the problem.
- 0:51Speaker 3: I just think the whole I just think they think
- 0:52Speaker 3: he's not gonna be the same player. I mean, this
- 0:54Speaker 3: guy posted what are sixty games each of the last three years.
- 0:59Speaker 3: I think they think that evens can go sour. I
- 1:01Speaker 3: think they want to change, not that you know, he
- 1:03Speaker 3: was finding the clubhouse. But I think they want to
- 1:05Speaker 3: change that whole dynamic there. I mean, you're just trading
- 1:08Speaker 3: to you know, getting rid of three proper guys with
- 1:10Speaker 3: you know, Nemo and and of course Diaz and and
- 1:13Speaker 3: now Alonso. I think he says it didn't work, let
- 1:17Speaker 3: me do my way.
- 1:17Speaker 4: Okay, Well what's his way then? Because you have Soda,
- 1:21Speaker 4: You're stuck with Toda.
- 1:22Speaker 5: You ain't you ain't moving him.
- 1:23Speaker 4: You got Lindor still, yep, you got McNeil, who everyone's like, oh,
- 1:28Speaker 4: you know, he didn't have.
- 1:28Speaker 5: A great year. What's his way? He tried his I
- 1:32Speaker 5: thought we've talked about this.
- 1:33Speaker 4: He tried his way, bringing in cheaper, starting pitching and
- 1:36Speaker 4: trying to hope he win in the one in the margins,
- 1:38Speaker 4: you're you're the mats man, got Uncle Stevie Cohen right,
- 1:42Speaker 4: like he's willing to spend go get the big fish.
- 1:45Speaker 3: I think he's doing his way Like Milwaukee. Hey worked
- 1:48Speaker 3: in Milwaukee. I'm gonna see it working.
- 1:49Speaker 5: Did they win a World Series in Milwaukee and did
- 1:52Speaker 5: it really work? That's that's the next thing.
- 1:54Speaker 3: At least you're in the playoffs every year, is that
- 1:56Speaker 3: is that.
- 1:57Speaker 4: What is that what we've now become as a as
- 1:59Speaker 4: a sport. When I talk to people, they're like, well,
- 2:03Speaker 4: if we get in, we have a chance, right right,
- 2:05Speaker 4: But if you get in and get swept in two games, didn't,
- 2:07Speaker 4: did you?
- 2:08Speaker 5: Was it still a good year?
- 2:09Speaker 3: No? It wasn't. But I think everybody just say get
- 2:12Speaker 3: in and uh, you know when you look back now
- 2:14Speaker 3: that he really want one and Soto, I don't think so.
- 2:17Speaker 3: I think it was a Steve Cohen sign. What we're
- 2:19Speaker 3: seeing right now. You know, it's probably a deal where hey, Steve,
- 2:23Speaker 3: you got your way last year, Now let me do
- 2:25Speaker 3: it this way. You're paying me the most of any
- 2:27Speaker 3: executive and baseball. I'm not gonna just sign checks. I'm
- 2:31Speaker 3: gonna do it my way.
- 2:33Speaker 6: Is there any indication of the players that they've kept
- 2:36Speaker 6: around of what that way is? Aj kind of asked
- 2:38Speaker 6: this too, like what is that? Because in Milwaukee it
- 2:42Speaker 6: was just, you know, find little value on the margins.
- 2:46Speaker 6: He doesn't need to do that. In New York he
- 2:49Speaker 6: has to do that, but he doesn't need to do that.
- 2:53Speaker 3: Yeah, It's almost like he just wants to change the
- 2:55Speaker 3: entire culture. I think he was so discussed about last year,
- 2:59Speaker 3: just the way the under achieve that something was wrong. Uh. So,
- 3:03Speaker 3: I think there's been more stories coming out, but Hicklin's
- 3:06Speaker 3: spring turning, like what was going on. We already saw stories,
- 3:10Speaker 3: you know, last couple of weeks about the whole relationship
- 3:13Speaker 3: you know with the you know, Lindor and Soto, which
- 3:16Speaker 3: was always whispered, now starting to become more public.
- 3:20Speaker 6: All right, let's go to where where Pete went to.
- 3:23Speaker 6: Pete went to the O's. Are the O's gonna still
- 3:27Speaker 6: be able to get pitching? Do they want to get pitching?
- 3:29Speaker 6: Or is Michaelias on the same line as David Sterens,
- 3:33Speaker 6: like no pitching over three years? Like this is all
- 3:37Speaker 6: and there we're gonna see the same Orioles again from
- 3:39Speaker 6: last year, but with more Homers.
- 3:42Speaker 3: No. I think they got to get a couple of pitchers. Uh.
- 3:45Speaker 3: It was disaster for the Oils too, I mean as
- 3:47Speaker 3: much as the mets Iner chiefs or of the Oriols.
- 3:49Speaker 3: So I think they'll definitely go get a uh at
- 3:52Speaker 3: least one big guy. If not to I think Rubinstein
- 3:55Speaker 3: is spending some money. Uh, you know, he's trying to
- 3:58Speaker 3: get the fans back. No, I fully expect them to
- 4:01Speaker 3: hit the pitch. That's your market for sure.
- 4:04Speaker 5: Who give us the name? Zach Allen?
- 4:07Speaker 3: I think to go bigger than that, I think, am
- 4:09Speaker 3: I try to get that? Oh wow, I think Michael King.
- 4:12Speaker 3: I think it goes after a couple of big boys.
- 4:14Speaker 3: So the Orioles are going to go do that. That
- 4:16Speaker 3: would help right now?
- 4:17Speaker 4: If you look at their team, we had this discussion
- 4:19Speaker 4: there are they better than the Blue Jays? Where the
- 4:21Speaker 4: Blue J's are aut right now? Are they better than
- 4:23Speaker 4: the Red Sox? They better than the Yankees?
- 4:25Speaker 3: I think, yes, I'm pitching.
- 4:26Speaker 4: You can argue, but I'm talking about right I'm not
- 4:28Speaker 4: talking about Yeah listen, if there were if some butts
- 4:31Speaker 4: all the time. But I'm saying right now, where they stand,
- 4:34Speaker 4: they're four maybe maybe third.
- 4:37Speaker 5: Maybe third ahead of which which one?
- 4:40Speaker 3: I put them right behind the Blue Jay I put
- 4:42Speaker 3: them ahead of the Yankees?
- 4:43Speaker 5: Wow?
- 4:43Speaker 3: Right now?
- 4:44Speaker 5: Wow?
- 4:44Speaker 3: You heard it? You heard it.
- 4:45Speaker 1: Put the O's ahead of the Yankees right now?
- 4:48Speaker 3: Right now? Wow?
- 4:49Speaker 5: Wow.
- 4:49Speaker 1: I think there's enough.
- 4:50Speaker 3: I I mean, yeah.
- 4:53Speaker 4: The col col rod On and Free top three Luis Heal,
- 4:59Speaker 4: I'll take the offense.
- 5:03Speaker 6: Won't pitch still may.
- 5:06Speaker 3: Yeah, We'll see how they do after you know, missing
- 5:08Speaker 3: missing all the time last year exactly.
- 5:10Speaker 5: Okay, that's fair.
- 5:13Speaker 3: I like, oh, it's a toss up.
- 5:14Speaker 5: Okay. So then who's the next big guy to go?
- 5:17Speaker 5: Who do you think is the best?
- 5:18Speaker 4: Because Schwarber boom then right away Pete Alonzo, So who
- 5:22Speaker 4: do you think is Is it Tucker? Is it Bellinger?
- 5:25Speaker 4: Is it a Pitcher? Is it one of the pictures
- 5:27Speaker 4: you're talking about? Who do you think is the next
- 5:28Speaker 4: big domino to fall?
- 5:29Speaker 3: I think Doninger signs after Tucker. I think lumber Tucker
- 5:32Speaker 3: gets Doninger's gonna want close to it. If someone's gonna
- 5:35Speaker 3: give Tucker a eight, nine, ten year contract, Dollinger wants
- 5:39Speaker 3: the same thing, maybe one year shy at the same money,
- 5:42Speaker 3: and me look at this thing. I mean, as soon
- 5:44Speaker 3: as the Schwarber got five years at one fifty, you
- 5:47Speaker 3: know that Boris is gonna top it. So you know,
- 5:49Speaker 3: one more million dollar a year, same type of thing.
- 5:52Speaker 3: So I think the two play off each other. I
- 5:55Speaker 3: still think Dollinger and Tucker a little ways away.
- 6:00Speaker 2: What about the trade market, we haven't actually seen any
- 6:02Speaker 2: of those big trades happen yet.
- 6:05Speaker 1: To tell Marte uh.
- 6:08Speaker 2: Scoobl sounds lofty, but maybe maybe I'm off there. Do
- 6:12Speaker 2: you think him could tell Derek or somebody else, you know,
- 6:17Speaker 2: upper echelon gets moved in the next couple of weeks.
- 6:21Speaker 3: I think the Marte market is picking up when the
- 6:24Speaker 3: two weeks ago at that Okay, they're not going to
- 6:26Speaker 3: train him. I think too many people are showing interest.
- 6:29Speaker 3: I think goes a Red Sox. I think the Red
- 6:31Speaker 3: Sox have got the pitch and get it done. Then
- 6:33Speaker 3: we'll see what they do with Bregman. I think the
- 6:36Speaker 3: mass is saying, you know what, we're not gonna win
- 6:37Speaker 3: all day for Brugman, Let's go get Marte and that
- 6:40Speaker 3: he'd fit in that clubhouse and Alex core would be
- 6:43Speaker 3: a perfect manager for him.
- 6:44Speaker 5: I can't. I can't argue that, all right.
- 6:46Speaker 4: So everyone, there's a couple of teams that everyone's asking
- 6:48Speaker 4: that have kind of set out we're the Cubs this
- 6:52Speaker 4: whole thing because we haven't heard Chicago. I know they're
- 6:56Speaker 4: in Chicago, but couch fans are what why aren't we
- 7:00Speaker 4: doing anything? Why where's where's Jed Hoyer and Tom Ricketts
- 7:04Speaker 4: and Craig council to make their moves Because if you
- 7:07Speaker 4: look around the Dodgers clearly got better, right, So teams
- 7:10Speaker 4: are starting to make their moves. The Phillies bring back
- 7:12Speaker 4: Shoreber where the Cubs they were a good team, they
- 7:14Speaker 4: were a playoff team last year.
- 7:16Speaker 3: I think they get one or two starters, they really do.
- 7:18Speaker 3: I don't know about offense. Uh, they talk about match
- 7:21Speaker 3: all the time. I'm sure Bregmant's a bet there. I
- 7:23Speaker 3: think they think that Matt Shawk can handle it, you know,
- 7:26Speaker 3: and go get some uh, you know, little help. I
- 7:28Speaker 3: don't see him spinning big unless they get to Maya.
- 7:31Speaker 3: I think they're right in the necks ver Maya. I
- 7:33Speaker 3: think a when the final deal is done, they'll be
- 7:37Speaker 3: at least a finalist.
- 7:41Speaker 1: Crats.
- 7:43Speaker 6: Yeah, I agree. I think there's plenty of teams that
- 7:46Speaker 6: have to that have to get in on some of
- 7:49Speaker 6: these Some of these free agents are the teams leary
- 7:53Speaker 6: of where the market's been set because of the fact
- 7:57Speaker 6: that older players over we're thirty years old have gotten
- 8:01Speaker 6: one hundred and fifty million, and couple that with a
- 8:04Speaker 6: CBA looming or a team's going CBA's looming. We're gonna
- 8:08Speaker 6: go hard and who cares what the rules happen, What
- 8:10Speaker 6: happens with the rules after this.
- 8:13Speaker 3: Yeah, I haven't heard any agent that said the CBA's
- 8:17Speaker 3: pediment to negotiations. You know, I think the big question
- 8:21Speaker 3: is how many years is Tucker get. I don't think
- 8:24Speaker 3: he's gonna get the big nine, ten, ten year contract.
- 8:28Speaker 3: I don't know if the Blue Jays are gonna do it.
- 8:30Speaker 3: I know the Dodgers will not do that. They might
- 8:33Speaker 3: get a high high AaB, but I think maybe he
- 8:36Speaker 3: might have to settle for the If these guys are
- 8:38Speaker 3: getting five year deals, maybe six seven years tops.
- 8:41Speaker 4: Okay, So you keep hearing the Reds were in on Schwerber,
- 8:45Speaker 4: the Pirates were in on Schwerver and Naylor. Well they
- 8:48Speaker 4: so they've shown they have money to spend. Will they
- 8:50Speaker 4: actually spend it now? I give the Oels a ton
- 8:52Speaker 4: of credit. They said they were in on Schwerber, didn't
- 8:54Speaker 4: get them, pivoted right away got Alonzo. But will a
- 8:56Speaker 4: team like the met or no, the Reds and the
- 8:59Speaker 4: Pirates to actually use the money that they've said, we
- 9:02Speaker 4: clearly have this amount of money. Will they actually go
- 9:04Speaker 4: out and get other players now to make their team better?
- 9:07Speaker 3: Talking the Reds, no, they thought so.
- 9:09Speaker 5: The red just said Schwarber or nothing.
- 9:11Speaker 3: Yeah, he was gonna solve. He was gonna make a
- 9:14Speaker 3: lot of money for the Reds. But as everyone's rip,
- 9:16Speaker 3: you went there.
- 9:19Speaker 5: As a fan. You have that money, let's go use
- 9:21Speaker 5: it to get our team better. We were in the playoffs.
- 9:23Speaker 3: But they thought that Schwarberg just been a hometown guy.
- 9:26Speaker 3: They would make you know, half of this contract just
- 9:30Speaker 3: with the tenants marketing stuff. They didn't think Alonzo can
- 9:33Speaker 3: do that. They don't think Bonzo could do that. So
- 9:35Speaker 3: now the Pirates might spend some money, but I don't
- 9:38Speaker 3: see the Reds jumping in said, Okay, here's our arm
- 9:41Speaker 3: fifty million dollars we could have spent I think hanging
- 9:43Speaker 3: on to it.
- 9:44Speaker 2: They were almost there. The Reds didn't want to just
- 9:47Speaker 2: keep going. And by the way, for everyone to know,
- 9:49Speaker 2: the Rule five draft is coming up in like ten
- 9:51Speaker 2: fifteen minutes.
- 9:52Speaker 1: We're not covering it. We'll talk about anything that happens there.
- 9:54Speaker 2: But that's why it is a quarter zip biker gang
- 9:59Speaker 2: running around behind mind us right now.
- 10:00Speaker 1: But anyway, I think the Reds.
- 10:02Speaker 3: Would have kept going if they want to. I think
- 10:04Speaker 3: they had the feeling and I think uh Schwarber said
- 10:08Speaker 3: once he got the five years at one fifty. Don't
- 10:11Speaker 3: even bother. I'm going back. I think, yeah, that could
- 10:13Speaker 3: of respect for the Reds organization. So I think him
- 10:15Speaker 3: the Reds that said here's six at one eighty, Phillies
- 10:18Speaker 3: would have said okay at six at one eighty, so
- 10:20Speaker 3: they would have gone one fifty.
- 10:22Speaker 1: Okay, I've got one for you.
- 10:23Speaker 2: On the Dodgers, they pick up Edwin Diaz, the rich
- 10:26Speaker 2: get richer. What do you think they could do or
- 10:29Speaker 2: are they just kind of hanging out and saying, hey,
- 10:30Speaker 2: if something falls in our lap. They clearly thought that
- 10:33Speaker 2: Edwin Diaz was a nice value and I expected him
- 10:36Speaker 2: to get at.
- 10:37Speaker 1: Least four years. He ends up getting three. What did
- 10:40Speaker 1: you think of that whole situation?
- 10:42Speaker 3: Are you just say the kin of the market dried up?
- 10:43Speaker 3: There was a teams that wanted to do it. Dogs
- 10:45Speaker 3: made the most sense, and uh, I think they kind
- 10:48Speaker 3: of set back. Like I said, remember last year they
- 10:51Speaker 3: played around the Soto market. I think they'll play around
- 10:53Speaker 3: in the Tucker market. I don't think they'll be an Unbellinger,
- 10:56Speaker 3: so I think they'll just say, who falls in our lap?
- 11:00Speaker 2: What is one more for? While we're on the Dodgers.
- 11:02Speaker 2: Real quick light, go ahead, Krats, Are you on the
- 11:04Speaker 2: Dodgers or you're switching?
- 11:05Speaker 6: It was on closers. It was on closures with the
- 11:08Speaker 6: because the fact that two of them are off, three
- 11:10Speaker 6: of them are off the board. Now, does this make
- 11:14Speaker 6: Robert Schwarz's market better or just what you said about Edwin, like,
- 11:18Speaker 6: you know what, people weren't really into going four years.
- 11:21Speaker 6: Does this make Robert Swarz's market a little more tenuous?
- 11:27Speaker 3: Well, I think he'll get Alicia strung two year deal,
- 11:30Speaker 3: and I think it'll you know, get close to the
- 11:32Speaker 3: uh you know, I get twenty three million a year
- 11:34Speaker 3: like Diaz. But I think he can get around the
- 11:36Speaker 3: twenty million dollar mark, at least close to it. So
- 11:38Speaker 3: I actually think it helps because he's the last big
- 11:41Speaker 3: guy available. But you know, his age obviously hurts him. No,
- 11:45Speaker 3: I think it helps his market.
- 11:47Speaker 2: Were you in the room when Dave Roberts made his
- 11:50Speaker 2: comment or kind of double down on his salary cop comment?
- 11:55Speaker 2: So because Kratz was like, I want to hear more
- 11:57Speaker 2: context of it, Well, give us the context of the room,
- 11:59Speaker 2: because it's funny. A lot of people are like, how
- 12:01Speaker 2: ironic the highest paid manager on the team with the
- 12:04Speaker 2: highest payroll, back to back shams whatever, wants to cap
- 12:08Speaker 2: it down.
- 12:10Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean some of the reporter asks a question
- 12:13Speaker 3: directly in right off the notes, and he says, hey,
- 12:17Speaker 3: I'm gonna tell in my opinion, I'm not changing what
- 12:19Speaker 3: I said. I'm not apologizing for what I said. This
- 12:22Speaker 3: is what I believe. But he did say, hey, the
- 12:24Speaker 3: game's going great. You know, I think it's fine the
- 12:27Speaker 3: way it is. But he did reiterate if we have
- 12:30Speaker 3: a cap, need a floor. He wants these small market
- 12:33Speaker 3: teams and start spending money. But he says, hey, I'm
- 12:35Speaker 3: not backing up what I said.
- 12:37Speaker 2: Question for you, do you think that his players would
- 12:41Speaker 2: be pissed out of comment like that. I mean, he's
- 12:42Speaker 2: got a lot of high paid players on the team.
- 12:44Speaker 2: It's a real thought, right. I mean, I'm here, I'm
- 12:47Speaker 2: speaking to many people on both sides of the equation there,
- 12:50Speaker 2: and ultimately, when you make a comment like that, it
- 12:53Speaker 2: will lead.
- 12:54Speaker 1: To players making less money.
- 12:56Speaker 2: I know, fans don't really give a crap, right, everybody's really.
- 12:59Speaker 1: Rich in this scenario, but it does affect the players
- 13:02Speaker 1: he's talking about. Plus he used to be a player.
- 13:04Speaker 3: Hed dressed that and someone said, you think will affect
- 13:07Speaker 3: your relationship with players? He said, no, I got Gary
- 13:10Speaker 3: which a relationship with that players. I'm not telling to
- 13:13Speaker 3: my opinion, and that's kind of the end of it.
- 13:15Speaker 3: But he was asked about that and he doesn't think
- 13:17Speaker 3: it will have any effect.
- 13:18Speaker 4: Huh, that's right, all right. Last thing for me. You
- 13:22Speaker 4: know who my allegiancers are too, Bob. Are the White
- 13:27Speaker 4: Sox gonna actually spend money besides Anthony k because Chris
- 13:30Speaker 4: Gatz came out and they got the first pick. Overall,
- 13:33Speaker 4: they're gonna take probably the guy from UCLA unless something
- 13:35Speaker 4: crazy happens.
- 13:37Speaker 5: Are they going to actually spend money? And are they
- 13:39Speaker 5: going to do something?
- 13:40Speaker 3: Bob? I don't think so.
- 13:41Speaker 4: Give us hope, Bob, give us hope. You're tighted with Rhinestort,
- 13:44Speaker 4: Give us hope.
- 13:45Speaker 3: I mean, they're so far away. White spend money. It's
- 13:47Speaker 3: not going to help you right now, yeah, but it
- 13:48Speaker 3: might help you two years away.
- 13:50Speaker 1: It's already been two years of crap. How many years
- 13:52Speaker 1: away are we here.
- 13:54Speaker 3: Actually second rebuilding? Five or by five years? I mean, yeah,
- 13:57Speaker 3: their window what about a year and a half?
- 14:01Speaker 5: Their window is two thousand and five buck.
- 14:03Speaker 1: How bad years has it been already? AJ three?
- 14:06Speaker 4: Well, twenty three is when it really started, and then
- 14:09Speaker 4: they lost one hundred and twenty four was a year
- 14:11Speaker 4: they set the record, and then twenty five, I mean
- 14:13Speaker 4: they got better. They couldn't be even worse, right right,
- 14:15Speaker 4: So now you're time to start, all right.
- 14:18Speaker 3: I think I think it's gonna be a least. It's
- 14:19Speaker 3: gonna be at least in our year. I mean they're
- 14:21Speaker 3: even close to uh, you know, the Tigers in Cleveland.
- 14:24Speaker 3: That's what I think. So I mean, who's who they're
- 14:26Speaker 3: gonna been on. I mean, if you sign a guy
- 14:28Speaker 3: like Cody Bellinger, I mean you're not gonna win for
- 14:29Speaker 3: a few years anywhere.
- 14:30Speaker 4: Went to National States, did the Jason Worth and look
- 14:33Speaker 4: where I got them. And Viikers did that with Padre
- 14:36Speaker 4: Rodriguez and Maglo and got to the World Series in
- 14:37Speaker 4: two years.
- 14:38Speaker 3: I think they think they're further away.
- 14:40Speaker 4: Okay, yeah, but all these trades and all these things, though,
- 14:42Speaker 4: Bob quit breaking my heart, breaking my heart, Bob used
- 14:46Speaker 4: to break Bob used to cover me in Minnesota, break
- 14:48Speaker 4: my heart. Every time Bob came up to me. I'm like, Bob,
- 14:51Speaker 4: am I getting traded. Am I getting sit at triple A?
- 14:53Speaker 4: But now he's doing it. Now he's doing it with
- 14:55Speaker 4: the white side and get the more pick excited. That's
- 14:59Speaker 4: true Number one.
- 15:01Speaker 5: Yea, Harold Banks came through for him.
- 15:03Speaker 1: Yeah, big Bob, thanks for stopping by.
- 15:06Speaker 2: Good to see you in person. Enjoy the remains of
- 15:09Speaker 2: the winter meetings. Are you going to this Rule five draft?
- 15:11Speaker 3: I am just to see what Mets officials I can
- 15:13Speaker 3: find and talking about.
- 15:15Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 15:17Speaker 3: The reason I'm going in that room good because I
- 15:20Speaker 3: was like, what do you really care? Well, no, I
- 15:22Speaker 3: do not care.
- 15:22Speaker 2: Yeah, well we'll talk. Well, we'll talk to you after
- 15:25Speaker 2: you get that word, maybe later this week or early
- 15:27Speaker 2: next week. Thanks again, Bob, Thank you guys.
- 15:35Speaker 1: Let's start with Edwin Diaz.
- 15:38Speaker 2: Jeff Passing said that the split between Diaz and the
- 15:41Speaker 2: Mets started when he did not get a call giving
- 15:44Speaker 2: him a heads up about the decision to sign Devin Williams.
- 15:48Speaker 1: Mm hmm Is that true?
- 15:51Speaker 3: Oo? Mm hmm?
- 15:54Speaker 4: Okay, Bro, is that true? We have Raffy Devers Part two.
- 15:58Speaker 4: Remember that whole Alex Bregman. It's not that hard to
- 16:02Speaker 4: pick up the phone, especially in today's world. Now, back
- 16:05Speaker 4: in the day, Krafts when they had to call you
- 16:07Speaker 4: on your landline, had to go through your mom to
- 16:09Speaker 4: talk to Remember, you pick up the phone and call
- 16:11Speaker 4: a girl and you're like, hey mom, just hi, hi
- 16:14Speaker 4: missus Kratz. Yes, yes, I'd love to talk to your daughter. Yes,
- 16:17Speaker 4: thank you, yes hi, yes, yes, I'm getting all a's
- 16:19Speaker 4: thank you.
- 16:20Speaker 5: Can we just get your daughter?
- 16:21Speaker 3: No?
- 16:21Speaker 5: But what about your mom and dad? Okay, yeah, it's
- 16:24Speaker 5: not that hard.
- 16:25Speaker 4: You can just literally pick up your you pick up
- 16:26Speaker 4: this thing right here and go hey, yes, hey Edwin. Thanks, Yes,
- 16:29Speaker 4: we're thinking about signing Devil Wims. Okay with that, Yes, cool,
- 16:31Speaker 4: we'd also love to resign you. Okay, thank you by
- 16:34Speaker 4: phone at a phone call?
- 16:39Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 16:39Speaker 2: What so, Kratz, do you think that Edwin Diaz deserved
- 16:44Speaker 2: a phone call from the Mets when they signed Devin Williams.
- 16:49Speaker 6: Yes, I mean, especially if they have an offer out there,
- 16:55Speaker 6: like a Leslie their offer, like if you even if
- 16:59Speaker 6: it's a player that you never had a con had
- 17:02Speaker 6: a relationship with, if you're if you're going after a
- 17:05Speaker 6: free agent and you have sixty six million dollars on
- 17:09Speaker 6: the table like they had. Hey, you know what, we're
- 17:12Speaker 6: also going after Devin Williams. Hey, you know what, Devin
- 17:15Speaker 6: Williams looks like he's close to signing. We want you
- 17:18Speaker 6: and him. This is not an and or type of thing.
- 17:21Speaker 6: He's not taken. He's not taking any trumpet from you. Like,
- 17:25Speaker 6: there's no he's not taking your walk out music. You
- 17:28Speaker 6: are the ninth inning guy. We just want to build
- 17:31Speaker 6: the best bullpen possible. Oh thank you for calling.
- 17:35Speaker 3: Hang up.
- 17:36Speaker 6: That's it, And like the next level is Edwin Diaz
- 17:41Speaker 6: has been a New York met. He has been the
- 17:43Speaker 6: New York met in that bullpen. So there's even easier
- 17:48Speaker 6: of a chance that you have that communication. And he
- 17:51Speaker 6: says he doesn't know. We'll wait till the other side
- 17:53Speaker 6: comes out. I can't wait to read the back of
- 17:55Speaker 6: the New York Post tomorrow morning. I want to see
- 17:58Speaker 6: the picture.
- 18:01Speaker 1: Isn't the phone call? Hey, Edwin?
- 18:04Speaker 2: You know how we had to use you sometimes for
- 18:07Speaker 2: more than three outs. We might have to do a
- 18:09Speaker 2: little bit less of that. You might feel fresher and better.
- 18:12Speaker 2: How were just desperately throwing you into games at the
- 18:15Speaker 2: final week of the season.
- 18:16Speaker 5: It's the same thing, same thing with Devers when they
- 18:19Speaker 5: signed Bragman.
- 18:20Speaker 4: If they just pick up the phone and say, hey, Rafie,
- 18:22Speaker 4: we're thinking about signing Alex Bragman. Are you okay moving
- 18:24Speaker 4: to first or DH, rather than him just getting call, hey,
- 18:28Speaker 4: we are seeing it. We signed Alex Bragman. Say what
- 18:31Speaker 4: you want. But guys have egos and guys get their
- 18:33Speaker 4: feelings hurt and hey.
- 18:36Speaker 2: We had Paul Tibony who actually just saw walk by
- 18:38Speaker 2: us and said a quick head not high. He is
- 18:42Speaker 2: now newly running the front office for the Nationals. He
- 18:47Speaker 2: told us that he's got guys popping up in trade
- 18:50Speaker 2: talks and he called them.
- 18:53Speaker 1: This was all in our interview the other day.
- 18:54Speaker 2: If you want to go back and watch it, and
- 18:56Speaker 2: there is a line and a needle to thread, because
- 18:58Speaker 2: you can't have every rumor.
- 19:00Speaker 3: Pop up and call a guy.
- 19:02Speaker 2: But it sounds like when there's something not I won't
- 19:04Speaker 2: even say serious, but when he has conversations with teams
- 19:06Speaker 2: they've had a particular player and it's coming from him,
- 19:09Speaker 2: He's like, I'm going to pick up the phone and
- 19:11Speaker 2: just be a person with them, and it sounded like
- 19:13Speaker 2: they really appreciated that.
- 19:15Speaker 4: Yes, I'll tell you this if you talk to people
- 19:18Speaker 4: that red Sox because Tiboni came from the Red Sox.
- 19:23Speaker 4: They thought losing him was a big deal because he
- 19:25Speaker 4: did a lot of the draft stuff. He did a
- 19:26Speaker 4: lot of the minor the stuff that people don't really
- 19:29Speaker 4: know about. So him going to the Nationals is a
- 19:31Speaker 4: big deal. But I love when he said, oh, I
- 19:32Speaker 4: called Mackenzie Corre, I talked to CJ.
- 19:34Speaker 5: Abrams.
- 19:35Speaker 4: These are the guys that are being rumored to be traded.
- 19:37Speaker 4: That means something to the players man. And I would
- 19:41Speaker 4: also love is a lot of these managers that are
- 19:43Speaker 4: new managers by Tello Butterra, Right, these guys they're calling
- 19:47Speaker 4: their players, They're going to see their players. That's something
- 19:50Speaker 4: that you can do, and it means something to these
- 19:51Speaker 4: players because if they look up and Blake Puterra is
- 19:55Speaker 4: in their hometown, He's like, Hey, I want to sit
- 19:57Speaker 4: down and have lunch with you. You know what, this
- 20:00Speaker 4: guy actually kind of cares about me, And that means
- 20:02Speaker 4: I'm more of a person. I'm more of a person
- 20:04Speaker 4: and a human being than just a quantity just to
- 20:07Speaker 4: just to something that I can just they can just
- 20:09Speaker 4: get rid of, right, because at least I have a
- 20:11Speaker 4: personal relationship. So I think this is great and it's
- 20:15Speaker 4: a new way and it's not that hard. It's really
- 20:16Speaker 4: not that hard.
- 20:19Speaker 1: Agree.
- 20:21Speaker 2: So, on the topic of Edwin Diaz, a couple other
- 20:24Speaker 2: teams that were either in or out on him. We
- 20:27Speaker 2: can show this Brian Hope tweet, Brian Cashman's or not
- 20:31Speaker 2: that tweet. Actually, well it's on Edwin Diaz. Here he
- 20:37Speaker 2: said the Yankees weren't in on Edwin Diaz. I guess
- 20:41Speaker 2: I could give you the whole thing so far.
- 20:44Speaker 3: Blah blah blah.
- 20:45Speaker 1: We spread cations.
- 20:47Speaker 2: I don't know, because Cashman apparently doesn't go on podcasts
- 20:53Speaker 2: that have too many millions of downloads, So I don't
- 20:55Speaker 2: really know.
- 20:56Speaker 5: I just haven't seen him. I've seen pretty much everybody.
- 20:58Speaker 3: I think.
- 20:58Speaker 2: I did see him for a millisec coming out of
- 21:01Speaker 2: the press conference room when he had his little thang,
- 21:04Speaker 2: I think. But yeah, he's not mingling walking around. I mean,
- 21:12Speaker 2: he's working, hopefully for Yankee fan purposes.
- 21:15Speaker 1: I think.
- 21:15Speaker 2: Anyway, let me get to some notes from Ken Rosenthal
- 21:19Speaker 2: and Will Salmon on Edward Diez while we're on that topic.
- 21:23Speaker 2: They reported in The Athletic this morning that the Braves
- 21:25Speaker 2: explored price points for Diaz as well as other late
- 21:30Speaker 2: inning relievers ultimately did not sign him because they're in
- 21:33Speaker 2: a different position than other teams when considering free agents
- 21:38Speaker 2: who rejected qualifying offers.
- 21:40Speaker 1: This actually is a real thing.
- 21:42Speaker 2: So if you sign a player like Edwin Diaz, you
- 21:47Speaker 2: lose at least your second highest draft pick. The Braves
- 21:51Speaker 2: have picked number nine overall, which is protected, but then
- 21:54Speaker 2: they also have number twenty six overall, which is what
- 21:58Speaker 2: they got for Drake Baldwin winning rookie the year. That's
- 22:00Speaker 2: a first round pick, so they would lose that if
- 22:06Speaker 2: they signed someone like Edwin Diaz.
- 22:10Speaker 3: Is it that.
- 22:11Speaker 4: Valuable were getting Edwin Diaz, who can save you fifty
- 22:13Speaker 4: plus games a year?
- 22:14Speaker 3: I mean?
- 22:14Speaker 5: Or is that draft? It just does what I don't understand.
- 22:16Speaker 1: But let me just explain from their perspective.
- 22:18Speaker 5: Now, let me explain.
- 22:19Speaker 4: I'd rather have the fifty plus saves if from a
- 22:21Speaker 4: guy I know they can do it every year, than
- 22:22Speaker 4: a guy I might pick who might never make it
- 22:24Speaker 4: to the major leagues.
- 22:25Speaker 5: I'll take the fifty plus save guy.
- 22:29Speaker 2: Hirston Waldrip last year that was really good in the
- 22:33Speaker 2: time that he pitched to eight ad R fifty six
- 22:36Speaker 2: and the third innings. He was twenty fourth overall. In
- 22:37Speaker 2: twenty twenty three. They've done a nice job right with
- 22:42Speaker 2: that pick status. I think the point is, let me
- 22:46Speaker 2: actually bring you a real snaro. Let's say, person Waldrip,
- 22:50Speaker 2: who is I think going to be a big league
- 22:52Speaker 2: regular starter, maybe a three ish if you get him,
- 22:58Speaker 2: and then instead of Edwin dia As, you can sign
- 23:01Speaker 2: Pete Fairbanks and Robert Suarez or something like that. Although
- 23:04Speaker 2: I don't know did Suarrez get a qualifying offer and
- 23:07Speaker 2: I remember, but point is non qualifying offer relievers. That
- 23:12Speaker 2: is why they're choosing to look at Diaz and say, okay,
- 23:16Speaker 2: unless this is at some crazy price point that we
- 23:19Speaker 2: just have to jump into, we'd rather dance with guys
- 23:22Speaker 2: that don't have qualifying offers attached to them. I know
- 23:25Speaker 2: it's not what Brads fans want to hear, but that's
- 23:27Speaker 2: the thinking from a front office krats that probably values
- 23:30Speaker 2: that first overall pick or that first round pick at
- 23:34Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 23:35Speaker 1: Ten fifteen million bucks.
- 23:37Speaker 2: They put prices on those in terms of what it
- 23:40Speaker 2: could turn into more than that.
- 23:42Speaker 6: More than that, I mean you start talking about like
- 23:44Speaker 6: high end prospects. Now, those are guys that that start
- 23:49Speaker 6: to become that prospect being thirty five to forty million
- 23:52Speaker 6: dollar prospects. They how they make that evaluation. I have
- 23:55Speaker 6: no idea. I mean, an elite level prospect like Jackson Holliday,
- 24:01Speaker 6: what did they say he was worth when he's still
- 24:03Speaker 6: in the minor league? He's like forty two or forty
- 24:05Speaker 6: nine million something ridiculous like that. So, yeah, they have
- 24:09Speaker 6: a major They have high value.
- 24:11Speaker 3: On that.
- 24:14Speaker 1: In the next other guys.
- 24:16Speaker 6: Right in the next three years, this team needs to win.
- 24:20Speaker 6: This team needs to win the World Series. That's why
- 24:22Speaker 6: you extended all these guys you won back in twenty one.
- 24:27Speaker 6: They need to continue to figure out why it wasn't
- 24:31Speaker 6: going well, especially at the beginning of the season last year,
- 24:33Speaker 6: and they got themselves in a hole. Does Edwin Diaz
- 24:37Speaker 6: change that for you? Or does the Hurston Waldrip of
- 24:43Speaker 6: the twenty twenty six draft change that for you in
- 24:46Speaker 6: the next three years. No, that draft pick does not
- 24:50Speaker 6: change that. Even if Herson Waldrop plays ten years in
- 24:53Speaker 6: the big leagues, his impact on the team is not
- 24:56Speaker 6: going to be what Edwin Diaz's impact is going to be.
- 24:59Speaker 6: And I understand that front offices have to run it
- 25:02Speaker 6: differently than that, but I just think I think teams,
- 25:08Speaker 6: like we always say, they convince themselves it's not worth it.
- 25:11Speaker 6: Why Because it's one hundred and sixty two games and
- 25:14Speaker 6: it's played by humans. Hitters that hit amazing are going
- 25:18Speaker 6: to make out seven out of ten times. Pitchers like
- 25:22Speaker 6: Edwin Diaz who pitch at the end of the game
- 25:25Speaker 6: are going to blow safe. You're not going to have
- 25:28Speaker 6: seasons where dudes have perfect save you know, fifty for
- 25:33Speaker 6: fifty in saves, like it's just not it. But you
- 25:36Speaker 6: want to build the best team possible. And that's when
- 25:38Speaker 6: that's where I'm kind of like, that's where I'd make
- 25:40Speaker 6: wrong decisions. I'd spend my money incorrectly if I was
- 25:44Speaker 6: a GM.
- 25:45Speaker 2: Well, I think they're looking at Diaz, and then they're
- 25:47Speaker 2: looking at Robert Squires, who's also very good and ken
- 25:51Speaker 2: and will put his name in the notes column as
- 25:54Speaker 2: well as someone that the Braves could be looking to
- 25:56Speaker 2: go after, and that would certainly be a nice pickup
- 25:58Speaker 2: for them. They brought back Rice Elglecias you bring Robert
- 26:02Speaker 2: Suarez to join the.
- 26:03Speaker 4: H They already have Bummer and the other lefty. They
- 26:07Speaker 4: have two good lefties that they can deal with, so
- 26:09Speaker 4: they need a right handed guy, right handed, high leverage reliever.
- 26:13Speaker 1: Isn't Robert Suarez the top guy for that?
- 26:15Speaker 5: He would be the top guy.
- 26:17Speaker 1: Yeah, So.
- 26:19Speaker 6: Dylan Lee's been great for them. They they kind of stacked, yeah,
- 26:24Speaker 6: lefty right over the top, but they stacked their bullpen
- 26:28Speaker 6: with a lot of lefties and maybe that's what didn't work.
- 26:30Speaker 6: So maybe they're going after those those right handers again.
- 26:33Speaker 2: I who knows, hey, I mean there could be some
- 26:37Speaker 2: trades too, so this Notes column says. In addition to
- 26:42Speaker 2: Brewers closer Trevor McGill, right handed reliever Nick Mears is
- 26:45Speaker 2: another player generating trade interest from Milwaukee's bullpen. Mears is
- 26:50Speaker 2: under club control for two more seasons and projected to
- 26:53Speaker 2: make one about one and a half mil this coming season.
- 26:57Speaker 1: I mean, neither of these guys are expensive.
- 27:00Speaker 2: I guess this is what Milwaukee has to do if
- 27:02Speaker 2: they do want to make off season changes and they
- 27:04Speaker 2: can't really do anything with free agency, they try to
- 27:07Speaker 2: get creative and trade value guys and then see if
- 27:10Speaker 2: they can just pump out new versions of what they
- 27:14Speaker 2: already created. Right, because most brewery friends look at this like, wait,
- 27:18Speaker 2: you're going to trade away two of our better relievers.
- 27:20Speaker 1: Hunh, what they don't cost you anything? What are we doing?
- 27:23Speaker 2: But it's not about that. It's the same thing with
- 27:25Speaker 2: Freddy Peralta. It's not about the eight million bucks. They're
- 27:27Speaker 2: fine there. It's about them seeing the starting pitching market
- 27:31Speaker 2: and being like, uh, Freddy Peralta in this market would
- 27:33Speaker 2: have gotten.
- 27:34Speaker 1: Like two hundred million bucks.
- 27:35Speaker 2: Someone can get the next year for eight Ok, you
- 27:38Speaker 2: got a lot in return for that, right.
- 27:41Speaker 5: Pers are good at this. They they've they're forward thinking,
- 27:45Speaker 5: risk averse. They're not risk averse.
- 27:47Speaker 4: They take risks, yeah, they're they're definitely not risk averse
- 27:50Speaker 4: when it comes to trades. They're they're just forward thinking
- 27:52Speaker 4: and they try to stay ahead of it, which is
- 27:55Speaker 4: why they've been successful for a long time because they're
- 27:57Speaker 4: always trying to stay ahead of it.
- 27:58Speaker 5: They're always trying to be ahead of The girl agreed,
