Chapter sixteen. Hagar is the person most concerned in the story of this chapter,
0:06
an obscure Egyptian woman whose name and story we never should have heard of
0:11
if Providence had not brought her into the family of Abram. Probably she was
0:16
one of those made servants whom the King of Egypt, among other gifts,
0:21
bestowed upon Abram Genesis fourteen sixteen. Concerning her, we have four things in
0:28
this chapter numeral one. Her marriage to Abram, her master, Verses one
0:33
through three, Numeral two. Her misbehavior towards Serai, her mistress, Verses
0:38
four through six, Numeral three. Her discourse with an angel that met her
0:44
in her flight Verses seven through fourteen, Numeral four. Her delivery of a
0:49
son Verses fifteen through sixteen. Abrams Sarah and Hagar b. C. Nineteen
0:55
eleven, Verses one through three. Now Sarah, abrams wife bear him no
1:00
children, and she had a handmaid, an Egyptian whose name was Hagar.
1:06
And Sarah said, unto Abram, behold, now the Lord hath restrained me
1:11
from bearing I pray thee go in unto my maid. It may be that
1:15
I may obtain children by her. And Abram hearkened to the voice of Sarah,
1:22
and Sarah, Abram's wife, took Hagar, her maid the Egyptian,
1:26
after Abram had dwelt ten years in the land of Canaan, and gave her
1:30
to her husband, Abram, to be his wife. We have here the
1:36
marriage of Abram to Hagar, who was his secondary wife. Herein though some
1:42
excuse may be made for him, he cannot be justified, for from the
1:46
beginning it was not so, and when it was so, it seems to
1:49
have been proceeded from an irregular desire to build up families for the speedier peopling
1:56
of the world and the Church. Certainly, it must not be sown.
2:00
Christ has reduced this matter to the first institution and makes the marriage union to
2:06
be between one man and one woman only now numeral one the maker of this
2:12
match. Would one think it was Sarah herself. She said to Abram,
2:17
I pray thee go in unto my maid. Verse two. Note number one.
2:23
It is the policy of Satan to tempt us by our nearest and dearest
2:29
relations, or those friends that we have an opinion of and affection. For
2:35
the temptation is most dangerous when it is sent by a hand that is least
2:39
suspected. It is our wisdom therefore to consider not so much who speaks as
2:46
what is spoken. Number two. God's commands consult our comfort and honor much
2:53
better than our own contrivances. Due it would have been much more for Sarah's
2:58
interest if Abram had kept to the rule of God's law instead of being guided
3:04
by her foolish projects. But we often do ill for ourselves Numeral two.
3:09
The inducement to it was Sarah's barrenness. Number one. Sarah bear Abram no
3:15
children. She was very fair Genesis twelve fourteen, was a very agreeable,
3:22
dutiful wife and a sharer with him in his large possessions, and yet written
3:29
childless. Note Subscript one. God dispenses his gifts, variously loading us with
3:36
benefits, but not overloading us. Some cross or other is appointed to be
3:42
an alloy to great enjoyments. Subscript two. The mercy of children is often
3:47
given to the poor and denied to the rich, given to the wicked,
3:52
and denied to good people. Though the rich have most to leave them,
3:57
and good people would take most care of their own education. God does herein
4:02
as it has pleased him. Number two. She owned God's providence in this
4:08
affliction the Lord hath restrained me from bearing. Note subscript one. As where
4:15
children are it is God that gives them Genesis thirty three five, so where
4:21
they are wanted, it is He that withholds them Genesis thirty two. This
4:28
evil is of the Lord. Subscript two. It becomes us to acknowledge this,
4:33
that we may bear it and improve it as an affliction of His ordering
4:40
for wise and holy ends. Number three. She used this as an argument
4:45
with Abram to marry his maid, and he was prevailed upon by this argument
4:49
to do it. Note subscript one. When our hearts are too much set
4:56
upon any creature comfort, we are easily put upon the use of indirect methods
5:01
for the obtaining of it. Inordinate desires commonly produce irregular endeavors. If our
5:09
wishes be not kept in a submission to God's providence, our pursuits will scarcely
5:15
be kept under the restraints of His precepts. Subscript too. It is for
5:21
want of a firm dependence upon God's promise and a patient waiting for God's time,
5:29
that we go out of the way of our duty to catch at expected
5:32
mercy. He that believes does not make haste No. Four. Abram's compliance
5:40
with Sarah's proposal, we have reason to think, was from an earnest desire
5:45
of the promised seed on whom the covenant should be entailed. God had told
5:49
him that his heir should be a son of his body, but had not
5:54
yet told him that it should be a son by Sarah. Therefore, he
5:59
thought, why not by Hagar, since Sarah herself proposed it. Note Subscript
6:05
one, Foul temptations may have very fair pretenses and be colored with that which
6:12
is very plausible. Subscript two fleshly wisdom, as it anticipates God's time of
6:18
mercy, so it puts us out of God's way. Subscript three. This
6:24
would be happily prevented if we would ask counsel of God by the word and
6:29
by prayer, before we attempt that which is important and suspicious. Herein Abram
6:35
was wanting he married without God's consent. This persuasion came not of him that
6:42
called him Verses four through six. And he went in unto Hagar, and
6:48
she conceived. And when she saw that she had conceived, her mistress was
6:53
despised in her eyes. And Sarah said, unto Abram, my wrong be
6:59
upon Thee, I have given my maid into thy bosom. And when she
7:02
saw that she had conceived, I was despised in her eyes the Lord judge
7:08
between me and thee. But Abram said, unto Syah, behold, thy
7:13
maid is in thy hand. Do to her as it pleaseth THEE. And
7:15
when Sarah dealt hardly with her, she fled from her face. We have
7:21
here the immediate bad consequences of Abram's unhappy marriage to Hagar. A great deal
7:29
of mischief it made quickly. When we do not do well, Both sin
7:33
and trouble lie at the door. And we may thank ourselves for the guilt
7:39
and grief that follow us when we go out of the way of our duty.
7:44
See it in this story Numeral one, Sarah is despised and thereby provoked
7:49
and put into a passion. Verse four. Hagar no sooner perceives herself with
7:55
child by her master than she looks scornfully upon her mistress, upbraids her,
8:01
perhaps with her barrenness, insults over her to make her to fret as first
8:07
Samuel one six, and boasts of the prospect she had of bringing an heir
8:13
to Abram, to that good land and to the promise. Now she thinks
8:18
herself a better woman than Sarah, more favored by Heaven, and likely to
8:24
be better beloved by Abram, and therefore she will not submit as she has
8:28
done. Note number one. Mean and servile spirits, when favored and advanced
8:35
either by God or man, are apt to grow haughty and insolent, and
8:41
to forget their place and origin. See Proverbs twenty nine, twenty one,
8:46
thirty twenty one through twenty three. It is a hard thing to bear honor
8:50
or aright. Number two. We justly suffer by those whom we have sinfully
8:56
indulged, And it is a righteous thing with God to make those instruments of
9:01
our trouble, whom we have made instruments of our sin, and to ensnare
9:07
us in our own evil counsels. This stone will return upon him that rolleth
9:13
it. Numeral two. Abram is clamored upon and cannot be easy, while
9:22
Sarah is out of humor. She upbraids him vehemently and very unjustly charges him
9:28
with the injury. Verse five. My wrong be upon thee with a most
9:33
unreasonable jealousy, suspecting that he countenanced Hagar's insolence, and as one not willing
9:41
to hear what Abram had to say for the rectifying of the mistake and the
9:48
clearing of himself. She rashly appeals to God in the case the Lord judged
9:52
between me and thee, as if Abram had refused to write her. Thus
9:58
does Sarah, in her passion speak as one of the foolish women speaketh Note
10:03
number one. It is an absurdity which passionate people are often guilty of,
10:09
to quarrel with others for that of which they themselves must bear the blame.
10:15
Sarah could not but own that she had given her maid to Abram. And
10:20
yet she cries out my wrong be upon thee when she should have said,
10:24
what a fool was I to do? So that is never said wisely,
10:30
which pride and anger have the indicting of. When passion is upon the throne,
10:35
reason is out of doors and is neither heard nor spoken. Number two.
10:41
Those are not always in the right who are most loud and forward in
10:46
appealing to God. Rash and bold imprecations are commonly evidences of guilt and a
10:52
bad cause. Numeral three. Hagar is afflicted and driven from the house.
11:00
Verse six. Observe number one. Abram's meekness resigns the matter of the maid
11:05
servant to Sarah, whose proper province it was to rule that part of the
11:11
family. Thy maid is in thy hand. Though she was his wife,
11:16
he would not countenance nor protect her in anything that was disrespectful to Sarah,
11:22
for whom he still retained the same affection that ever he had. Note.
11:28
Those who would keep up peace and love must return soft answers to hard accusations.
11:35
Husbands and wives particularly should agree and endeavor not to be both angry together.
11:43
Yielding pacifies great offenses see Proverbs fifteen one, number two. Sarah's passion
11:50
will be revenged upon Hagar. She dealt hardly with her, not only confining
11:56
her to her usual place and work as a servant, but probably making her
12:01
to serve with rigor. Note God takes notice of and is displeased with the
12:07
hardships which harsh masters unreasonably put upon their servants they ought to forbear. Threatening
12:16
with Job's thought, did not he that made me make him Job? Thirty
12:20
one fifteen number three. Hagar's pride cannot bear it. Her high spirit,
12:26
having become impatient of rebuke, she fled from her face. She not only
12:33
avoided her wrath for the present, as David did Sauls, but she totally
12:37
deserted her service and ran away from the house forgetting Subscript one, What wrong
12:43
she hereby did to her mistress, whose servant she was, and to her
12:50
master, whose wife she was. Note pride will hardly be restrained by any
12:56
bonds of duty. No, not by many script too, that she herself
13:01
had first given the provocation by despising her mistress. Note those that suffer for
13:09
their faults ought to bear their sufferings patiently. One Peter two twenty, verses
13:16
seven through nine. And the Angel of the Lord found her by a fountain
13:20
of water in the wilderness, by the fountain in the way to shore.
13:24
And he said, Hagar, sayah is maid, whence camest thou, and
13:28
whither wilt thou go? And she said, I flee from the face of
13:33
my mistress Sarah. And the Angel of the Lord said, unto her,
13:39
return to thy mistress, and submit thyself under her hands. Here is the
13:43
first mention we have in scripture of an angel's appearance. Hagar was a type
13:50
of the law which was given by the disposition of angels. But the world
13:54
to come is not put in subjection by them. Hebrews two five. Observe
14:00
merle I. How the angel arrested her in her flight verse seven, It
14:05
should seem she was making towards her own country, for she was in the
14:09
way to shore, which lay towards Egypt. It were well if our afflictions
14:15
would make us think of our home, the better country. But Hagar was
14:20
now out of her place and out of the way of her duty, and
14:24
going further astray when the angel found her. Note number one, it is
14:31
a great mercy to be stopped in a sinful way, either by conscience or
14:35
by providence. Number two. God suffers those who are out of the way
14:41
to wander awhile, that when they see their folly and what a loss they
14:46
have brought themselves to, they may be the better disposed to return. Hagar
14:50
was not stopped till she was in the wilderness and had sat down, weary
14:56
enough and glad of clear water to refresh herself with God brings us into a
15:01
wilderness, and there meets us Joseah two fourteen numeral two. How he examined
15:07
her verse eight, Observe number one. He called her Hagar Siria's maid Subscript
15:16
one as a check to her pride, though she was Abram's wife and as
15:20
such was obliged to return. Yet he called her Siri's maid to humble her.
15:26
Note though civility teaches us to call others by their highest titles, yet
15:33
humility and wisdom teach us to call ourselves by the lowest. Subscript two,
15:39
as a rebuke to her flight. Sirie's maid ought to be in Sarah's tent,
15:46
and not wandering in the wilderness and sauntering by a fountain of water.
15:50
Note it is good for us often to call to mind what our place and
15:54
relation are see Ecclesiastes ten four, number two. The questions the angel posed
16:00
to her were proper and very pertinent. Subscript one. Whence comest thou consider
16:07
that thou art running away both from the duty thou wast bound to and the
16:12
privileges thou wast blessed with in Abram's tent. Note it is a great advantage
16:18
to live in a religious family, which those ought to consider who have that
16:23
advantage. Yet upon every slight inducement are forward to quit it. Subscript two.
16:30
Whither wilt thou go thou art running thyself into sin in Egypt. If
16:36
she returned to that people, she will return to their gods and into danger
16:41
in the wilderness through which she must travel. Deuteronomy eight fifteen. Note those
16:48
who are forsaking God and their duty would do well to remember not only whence
16:53
they have fallen, but whither they are falling. See Jeremiah two eighteen.
16:59
What has thou to do with Hagar in the way of Egypt? John six
17:03
sixty eight, Number three. Her answer was honest and of fair confession.
17:10
I flee from the face of my mistress. In this subscript one she acknowledges
17:17
her fault in fleeing from her mistress, and yet subscript two excuses it that
17:23
it was from the face of displeasure of her mistress. Note children and servants
17:32
must be treated with mildness and gentleness, lest we provoke them to take any
17:37
irregular courses and so become accessory to their sins, which will condemn us,
17:44
though it will not justify them. Number four, how he sent her back
17:48
with suitable and compassionate counsel. Return to thy mistress and submit thyself under her
17:55
hand. Verse nine. Go home and humble thyself, for what thou hast
18:00
done amiss, and beg pardon and resolve for the future, to behave thyself
18:06
better. He makes no question, but she would be welcome, though it
18:10
does not appear that Abrams sent after her. Note, those that have gone
18:15
astray from their place and duty, when they are convinced of their error,
18:19
must hasten their return and reformation, how mortifying soever it may be. The
18:26
promise concerning Ishmael b. C. Nineteen eleven, verses ten through fourteen.
18:33
And the Angel of the Lord said unto her, I will multiply thy seed
18:37
exceedingly, that it shall not be numbered for multitude. And the Angel of
18:41
the Lord said unto her, behold thou art with child, and shalt bear
18:47
a son, and shalt call his name Ishmael. Because the Lord hath heard
18:52
thy affliction, and he will be a wild man. His hand will be
18:56
against every man, and every man's hand against him, and he shall dwell
19:02
in the presence of all his brethren. And she called the name of the
19:07
Lord that spake unto her, Thou God seest me, For she said,
19:12
have I also here looked at him that seeth me? Wherefore the well was
19:19
called beer LAHIROI behold it is between Kadosh and Baread. We may suppose from
19:26
the Angel having given Hagar that good counsel verse nine to return to her mistress.
19:33
She immediately promised to do so, and was setting her face homeward.
19:38
And then the angel went on to encourage her with an assurance of the mercy
19:44
God had in store for her and her seed. For God will meet those
19:48
with mercy that are returning to their duty. I said, I will confess,
19:53
and thou forgavest Psalm thirty two five. Here is numeral one a prediction
20:02
concerning her posterity given her for her comfort in her present distress. Notice is
20:08
taken of her condition. Behold thou art with child, and therefore this is
20:14
not a fit place for thee to be in. Note it is a great
20:18
comfort to women with child to think that they are under the particular cognizance and
20:22
care of the divine providence. God graciously considers their case and suits supports to
20:30
it. Now Number one, the Angel assures her of a safe delivery and
20:36
that of a son, which Abram desired. This fright and ramble of hers
20:41
might have destroyed her hope of an offspring, but God dealt not with her
20:45
according to her folly, thou shalt bear a son. She was saved in
20:49
child maring, not only by providence, but by promise. Number two He
20:56
names her child, which was an honor but to her, and it call
21:02
him Ishmael. God will hear, and the reason is because the Lord has
21:07
heard. He has and therefore he will. Note the experience we have had
21:12
of God's seasonable kindness to us in distress would encourage us to hope for similar
21:18
help in similar exigencies. Psalm ten seventeen. He has heard thy affliction,
21:26
Verse eleven. Note even when there is little cry of devotion, the God
21:30
of pity sometimes graciously hears the cry of affliction. Tears speak as well as
21:37
prayers. This speaks comfort to the afflicted that God not only sees what their
21:42
afflictions are, but hears what they say. Note further, seasonable succors in
21:48
a day of affliction ought always to be remembered with thankfulness to God. Such
21:55
a time, in such a strait, the Lord heard the voice of my
21:59
affliction and helped me See Deuteronomy twenty six seven. Psalm thirty one twenty two.
22:06
Number three He promises Sir a numerous offspring verse ten, I will multiply
22:11
thy seed exceedingly Hebrew multiplying. I will multiply it, that is, multiply
22:18
it in every age, so as to perpetuate it. It is supposed that
22:25
the Turks at this day descend from Ishmael, and they are a great people.
22:30
This was in pursuance of the promise made to Abram, I will make
22:34
thy seed as the dust of the earth. Chapters thirteen through sixteen. Note
22:41
many that are children of godly parents have for their sakes a very large share
22:47
of outward common blessings, though like Ishmael, they are not taken into covenant.
22:52
Many are multiplied that are not sanctified. Number four, He gives the
23:00
character of the child she should bear, which, however it may seem to
23:03
us, perhaps was not very disagreeable to her. Verse twelve. He will
23:10
be a wild man, a wild ass of a man. So the word
23:14
is rude and bold and fearing, no man untamed, untractable, living at
23:19
large, and impatient of service and restraint. Note the children of the bond
23:26
woman who are out of covenant with God are as they were born. Like
23:30
the wild ass is cold. It is grace that reclaims men civilizes them and
23:37
makes them wise and good for something. It is foretold Subscript one, that
23:44
he should live in strife and in a state of war, his hand against
23:48
every man, this is his sin, and every man's hand against him,
23:53
this is his punishment. Note those that have turbulent spirits have commonly troublesome lives.
24:02
Those that are provoking, vexatious, and injurious to others must expect to
24:07
be repaid in their own coin. He that has his hand and tongue against
24:14
every man shall have every man's hand and tongue against him, and he has
24:18
no reason to complain of it. And yet subscript too, that he should
24:25
live in safety and hold his own against all the world. He shall dwell
24:30
in the presence of all his brethren. Though threatened and insulted by all his
24:36
neighbors, yet he shall keep his ground, and for Abram's sake, more
24:41
than his own, shall be able to make his part good with them.
24:45
Accordingly we read chapters twenty five through twenty eight that he died and lived in
24:52
the presence of all his brethren. Note many that are much exposed by their
24:56
own imprudence are yet strangely preserved by the divine providence. So much better is
25:04
God to them than they deserve, when they not only forfeit their lives by
25:10
sin, but hazard them Numeral two. Hagar's pious reflection upon this gracious appearance
25:18
of God to her Verses thirteen and fourteen. Observe in what she said,
25:25
Number one, her awful adoration of God's omniscience and providence, with application of
25:32
it to herself. She called the name of the Lord that spoke unto her.
25:36
That is, thus she made confession of his name. This she said,
25:41
to his praise, Thou God seest me. This should be with her
25:48
his name forever, and this his memorial by which she would know him and
25:52
remember him while she lives. Thou God seest me. Note subscript one.
26:00
The God with whom we have to do is a seeing God, and all
26:04
seeing God. God is, as the ancients express it all I Subscript two.
26:14
We ought to acknowledge this with application to ourselves. He that sees all
26:19
sees me as David saw one hundred thirty nine one. O, Lord,
26:26
Thou hast searched me and known me. Subscript three. A believing regard to
26:32
God as a God that sees us will be of great use to us in
26:37
our returns to him. It is a proper word for a penitent. Sup
26:41
Point one, thou seest my sin and folly. I have sinned before THEE,
26:48
says the prodigal in thy sight, says David. Sub Point two,
26:55
thou seest my sorrow and affliction. This hagar especially refers to when we have
27:02
brought ourselves into distress by our own folly. Yet God has not forsaken us.
27:08
Some point three, thou seest the sincerity and seriousness of my return and
27:14
repentance. Thou seest my secret mournings for sin and secret motions towards THEE.
27:22
Su point four, thou seest me if in any instance I depart from thee
27:29
Psalm forty four, twenty and twenty one, this thought should always restrain us
27:33
from sin and excite us to duty. Thou God seest me Number two her
27:41
humble admiration of God's favor to her? Have I here also looked after him
27:48
that seeth me? Have I here seen the back parts of him that seeth
27:55
me? So it might be read, for the word is much the same
28:00
with that Exodus thirty three twenty three. She saw not face to face,
28:06
but as through a glass darkly First Corinthians, thirteen twelve. Probably she knew
28:11
not who it was that talked with her till he was departing as Judges six
28:18
twenty one and twenty two thirteen twenty one. And then she looked after him
28:25
with a reflection like that of the two Disciples Luke twenty four, thirty one
28:29
and thirty two. Or have I here seen him that sees me? Note
28:37
subscript one. The communion which holy souls have with God consists in their having
28:42
an eye of faith towards Him. As a God that has an eye of
28:47
favor towards them, The intercourse is kept up by the eye. Subscript two.
28:56
The privilege of our communion with God is to be looked upon with wonder
29:00
and admiration. Sub Point one. Considering what we are who are admitted to
29:07
this favor? Have I I that am so mean? I that am so
29:12
vile? Tewod Samuel seven eighteen su point two Considering the place where we are
29:21
thus favored? Here also not only in Abram's tent and at his altar,
29:27
but here also in this wilderness, here where I never expected it, where
29:34
I was out of the way of my duty. Lord how is it John
29:40
fourteen twenty two. Some make the answer to this question to be negative,
29:45
and so look upon it as a penitent reflection. Have I here, also,
29:52
in my distress and affliction, looked after God? No I was as
29:56
careless and unmindful of Him as ever I used to be, And yet He
30:03
has thus visited and regarded me. For God often anticipates us with favors,
30:10
and is found of those that seek him. Not Isaiah sixty five one,
30:15
numeral three. The name which this gave to the place beer Lahiroi, the
30:22
well of Him that liveth and seeth me verse fourteen. It is probable that
30:27
Hagar put this name upon it, and it was retained long after in perpetuum.
30:33
Ray Memoriam a lasting memorial of this event. This was a place where
30:38
the God of Glory manifested the special cognizance and care he took of a poor
