- 0:42Speaker 1: Welcome to the Philadelphia Sports Table podcast show, the longest
- 0:45Speaker 1: running weekly Philly sports podcast show in the world, twelve
- 0:48Speaker 1: years strong. We got a great show coming your way
- 0:50Speaker 1: this week. I'm Jeff Warren. Here are my good buddy
- 0:53Speaker 1: Len Hunsicker, a friend. You have been gone for some time,
- 0:56Speaker 1: You've been on vacation, You've been just trapping all around.
- 1:00Speaker 1: It is good to see you. How was How was
- 1:02Speaker 1: your trift?
- 1:03Speaker 2: I got to the I got out of the Outer
- 1:05Speaker 2: Banks like a week before the storms supposed to hit.
- 1:09Speaker 1: Good.
- 1:10Speaker 2: I got to go on the beach and in the
- 1:11Speaker 2: water and everything, And apparently you can't do that now
- 1:14Speaker 2: down there. So yeah, I went at the right time.
- 1:17Speaker 2: My family had done that in the past in like
- 1:20Speaker 2: South Carolina, where yeah, they like rented a house during
- 1:25Speaker 2: like hurricane season. Yeah, and it's you're just courting fate
- 1:30Speaker 2: in terms of having your vacation ruins. But like I just, yeah,
- 1:34Speaker 2: it's always a roll of the dice when you do that.
- 1:36Speaker 1: It is. And look, I was actually thinking about you
- 1:39Speaker 1: in terms of that being down there is like is
- 1:41Speaker 1: he actually going to be able to enjoy himself? Because
- 1:43Speaker 1: for some reason, when you roll the dice at times,
- 1:45Speaker 1: my friend, you don't always have the best lucky No
- 1:50Speaker 1: flucked out for you though. Yeah, I couldn't believe it.
- 1:53Speaker 2: Yeah, No, it was good. Yeah. Fortunately we just went
- 1:57Speaker 2: a couple of weeks before all the whole thing with
- 1:59Speaker 2: Aaron started going down and uh yeah, so yeah, so yeah,
- 2:03Speaker 2: I'm glad I got down there. When I did. It
- 2:04Speaker 2: wasn't like hot, like like we were out on the
- 2:07Speaker 2: beach and had some beach days, but it wasn't like,
- 2:09Speaker 2: oh man, I'm dying to get in the water because
- 2:11Speaker 2: it's like ninety degrees. It was like eighty two. Like
- 2:13Speaker 2: the whole time. It was as hot as it got.
- 2:15Speaker 1: That's awesome.
- 2:16Speaker 2: It was good. It was nice.
- 2:17Speaker 1: You were up in Maine too with your wife. You
- 2:19Speaker 1: and Kristin were up in Maine.
- 2:20Speaker 2: Well, No, that was that was like that was last year.
- 2:23Speaker 1: I thought you were up in Maine for some reason.
- 2:25Speaker 1: This year, I don't know what that. Well I was
- 2:26Speaker 1: thinking about. No, I don't know what kind of money
- 2:28Speaker 1: you think I made. No, God, I wish I was.
- 2:33Speaker 1: You mean, you're not making a ton of money from
- 2:35Speaker 1: that trucking company that you work for. No, did I
- 2:38Speaker 1: think you were in Maine too? For I thought you
- 2:41Speaker 1: were in both places. I was like, boy, we've got
- 2:42Speaker 1: ourselves old traveler here.
- 2:45Speaker 2: No, no, main, Maine was last summer. So yeah, we're
- 2:48Speaker 2: either last summer or two summer. Want to say last
- 2:50Speaker 2: think it was last summer? Yeah, but I know for
- 2:53Speaker 2: fact it wasn't this summer.
- 2:54Speaker 1: Okay, all right, maybe maybe christ maybe Kristin was posting
- 2:57Speaker 1: some stories about Maine last year and I was thinking
- 2:59Speaker 1: it was this year. I think that might be the issue. Probably,
- 3:02Speaker 1: I think that's what was happening. Memory. He's, yeah, all right, whatever,
- 3:07Speaker 1: nobody needs to hear that. But yeah, seriously, buddy, it's
- 3:11Speaker 1: great to have you back. When Eric is up at
- 3:12Speaker 1: the University of Buffalo right now moving his daughter into college,
- 3:16Speaker 1: my gosh, oh yeah.
- 3:17Speaker 2: Holy cav he's he's in for it. Tomorrow. I knows
- 3:23Speaker 2: tears are going to be flowing. I can imagine it. Now.
- 3:26Speaker 1: My daughters are heading into high school just a week, freaking.
- 3:30Speaker 2: Doing a couple of years unless they go to Lehigh
- 3:32Speaker 2: and then they're just always around.
- 3:34Speaker 1: Mate, Well let's have him live on campus. How about
- 3:37Speaker 1: that if they're two miles down the road. Yeah all right, Well, everybody,
- 3:42Speaker 1: we got a great show for you here. We're going
- 3:44Speaker 1: to certainly be getting into some Phillies talk. We're going
- 3:46Speaker 1: to dive into Zach Wheeler, that really scary health situation
- 3:50Speaker 1: that he's been going through. He's on the IR Aaron
- 3:53Speaker 1: Nola's back, but man has he struggled, of course in
- 3:56Speaker 1: his first outing when he was on the mound. Alec
- 3:59Speaker 1: Boum is back. Can he provide another spark to this
- 4:03Speaker 1: Phillies offense that has been producing as of late. But
- 4:07Speaker 1: it's good to have Alec Bohm back. And then from there,
- 4:09Speaker 1: we're gonna get into some Flyers talk. It's been a
- 4:11Speaker 1: while since we talked about this team, but the Flyers
- 4:14Speaker 1: prospects and some of these guys in the farm system,
- 4:18Speaker 1: they are poised to take a step forward under the
- 4:21Speaker 1: Phantom's new system that's gonna be in place. We really
- 4:24Speaker 1: haven't talked about the new head coach for the Flyers,
- 4:29Speaker 1: but we're certainly gonna be diving into that a little
- 4:31Speaker 1: bit more. And then we've got a ton of Eagles
- 4:33Speaker 1: talk this week. The Eagles definitely appear to have their
- 4:36Speaker 1: next starting safety in Andrew mccooba after as he's just
- 4:40Speaker 1: had a fantastic preseason thus far. But even though that
- 4:44Speaker 1: position seems to be solidified, what is going to happen
- 4:49Speaker 1: with that number two cornerback position. Got some good news
- 4:53Speaker 1: in the secondary, some challenges and some unknowns. We're gonna
- 4:56Speaker 1: dive into that as well. Then we're thrown down on
- 4:58Speaker 1: the table this week. Friend of the pod Tommy from
- 5:01Speaker 1: a Daily Dose of Eagles over on Twitter slash x.
- 5:05Speaker 1: He's gonna be joining us to dive into Eagles training camp,
- 5:08Speaker 1: some of the storylines we've been following, what's gonna be
- 5:10Speaker 1: coming this season with some positions on the team. We
- 5:15Speaker 1: got a great conversation with Tommy that's gonna be starting. So, Len,
- 5:19Speaker 1: let's dive into this Phillies team. It's been a while
- 5:22Speaker 1: since you and I have talked about this team, buddy,
- 5:24Speaker 1: because it's been an up and down season of course
- 5:26Speaker 1: for them. They're currently still a top of the NL
- 5:29Speaker 1: East at this time of us recording this on August nineteenth,
- 5:34Speaker 1: we're recording this Tuesday night. I know this is going
- 5:37Speaker 1: to be dropping on Thursday this week, Len, but let's
- 5:41Speaker 1: start off with Zach Wheeler. He goes on the IR
- 5:44Speaker 1: with a pretty scary injury. Like I said, he was
- 5:47Speaker 1: diagnosed with a blood clot near his right shoulder. Over
- 5:49Speaker 1: the weekend, underwent a procedure down at Thomas University Hospital,
- 5:55Speaker 1: and timeline has not been determined on whether or not
- 5:59Speaker 1: he's gonna be coming back. I mean, it's not clear
- 6:03Speaker 1: when or if Wheeler is going to pitch again this
- 6:06Speaker 1: season as he deals with this pretty pretty significant medical
- 6:10Speaker 1: issue here. As Matt Strump said, he really is the
- 6:13Speaker 1: heart of this team, the heart of the staff, and
- 6:16Speaker 1: this is really tough to see. Man, I'm really concerned
- 6:19Speaker 1: about what this means for the Phillies moving forward.
- 6:22Speaker 2: Yeah, it's it's really tough. And the word that you
- 6:25Speaker 2: use there that I think is huge, as if because
- 6:29Speaker 2: I was reading a little bit about you know, this
- 6:32Speaker 2: whole thing, and the blood clot was removed in the surgery,
- 6:35Speaker 2: so it's it's out, but you know, down now there's
- 6:38Speaker 2: recovery and now there's monitoring to make sure, you know,
- 6:41Speaker 2: a clock doesn't come back and all this, from what
- 6:44Speaker 2: I understand, is caused by repetitive moching, which is all
- 6:47Speaker 2: that pitching is basically. So yeah, and I've heard the
- 6:52Speaker 2: recovery time can be three months. So in that case,
- 6:57Speaker 2: he's done, you know, they can they can go as
- 7:00Speaker 2: deep as they want. He's still done at that point
- 7:02Speaker 2: in time. So yeah, it's not a good scenario at all.
- 7:07Speaker 2: I mean, you're you're you're talking about a guy that
- 7:11Speaker 2: you know, I know he doesn't have a cy Young
- 7:13Speaker 2: in his in his you know, cabinet there. But if
- 7:16Speaker 2: you had a cy Young Award for the previous five years,
- 7:19Speaker 2: not just one year, but just previous five years of
- 7:22Speaker 2: pitching in the National League, it's Zach Wheeler and there's
- 7:25Speaker 2: not a close second.
- 7:26Speaker 1: Yea.
- 7:26Speaker 2: He is the best pitcher in the National League over
- 7:30Speaker 2: the past five years combined. So that's a lot to
- 7:34Speaker 2: lose fortunately. I mean Christopher Sanchez, man, he has just
- 7:41Speaker 2: I don't want to say come out of nowhere, because
- 7:42Speaker 2: he was great last year too, But man, I remember
- 7:47Speaker 2: when he first came up and came up with the
- 7:48Speaker 2: Phills and just I just thought, Okay, he's a guy
- 7:52Speaker 2: and he's going to be a guy that like is
- 7:54Speaker 2: on the bust between Philly and Lehigh Valley quite often.
- 7:57Speaker 2: He's he's just a guy. I never thought thing about him,
- 8:00Speaker 2: And man, has he proven that he's he's a frontline
- 8:05Speaker 2: starting pitcher. He's he's probably gonna be their number one
- 8:08Speaker 2: starter in the postseason.
- 8:09Speaker 1: Yeah. Absolutely, Look, Len, we don't don't. We don't like
- 8:13Speaker 1: to do a lot of hot takes on this podcast.
- 8:15Speaker 1: In fact, I am finding hot takes anymore online, whether
- 8:19Speaker 1: it's Twitter, x wherever, to be so freaking annoying anymore.
- 8:24Speaker 1: I mean, we're getting to this stage in social media
- 8:26Speaker 1: where it's like, Okay, hot takes get so old. But
- 8:29Speaker 1: I mean, we really do. I think, from a feeling
- 8:31Speaker 1: standpoint about Zach Wheeler, have to ask those questions, you know,
- 8:36Speaker 1: because we feel it within us. Can this team actually
- 8:39Speaker 1: do it? Can they get to the NLCS? Can they
- 8:41Speaker 1: actually and potentially get to the World Series without having
- 8:44Speaker 1: Zach Wheeler pitching? I don't think that can happen. And
- 8:48Speaker 1: I know it's a hot take, and I just look
- 8:51Speaker 1: at the reality of what this team wanted to be,
- 8:54Speaker 1: what the front office wanted this team to be in
- 8:57Speaker 1: the off season. It was all about pitching because you
- 9:00Speaker 1: had these two guys in Chris Sanchez and Zach Wheeler
- 9:03Speaker 1: being able to really be that anchor for you. You
- 9:06Speaker 1: lose one of those guys. I don't know if it's
- 9:09Speaker 1: possible for them to be able to get through this
- 9:12Speaker 1: postseason in a in a productive fashion from a pitching standpoint,
- 9:16Speaker 1: I just thought, I don't think it can happen. I
- 9:19Speaker 1: don't know, That's what I'm that ringing.
- 9:20Speaker 2: Makes it harder.
- 9:21Speaker 1: Yeah, sure, we absolutely, but I just don't know if
- 9:24Speaker 1: it can happen. Again. I hate doing the hot take thing,
- 9:26Speaker 1: but it's just something I'm feeling within myself. I'm like, Man,
- 9:29Speaker 1: you lose Zach Wheeler during the postseason, how are you
- 9:31Speaker 1: gonna get it done? Because we're going to be getting
- 9:33Speaker 1: into Aaron Nolan in a second. And I know he's
- 9:35Speaker 1: only had one start since his return as of us
- 9:37Speaker 1: recording this, but man, that was not promising well.
- 9:41Speaker 2: And before I get into Nola, I mean, yes, losing
- 9:45Speaker 2: Wheeler is enormous. It's gigantic and it sucks. But you know,
- 9:52Speaker 2: I think that Sanchez can be, you know, a number
- 9:55Speaker 2: one star starter in the postseason. Suarez has been good
- 9:59Speaker 2: in the past. I think Zardo is a good arm.
- 10:02Speaker 2: Nola we're going to see about. To me, the bigger
- 10:05Speaker 2: concern I guess I always had with regard to the
- 10:08Speaker 2: Phillies in the postseason is the bats just tend to
- 10:13Speaker 2: they they lose their approach of the play in the postseason.
- 10:16Speaker 2: We've seen it happen a couple of years in a
- 10:18Speaker 2: row now where it's just like these guys are swinging
- 10:21Speaker 2: and anything. Yeah, and just like what what are you
- 10:24Speaker 2: guys like just chasing everything? And to me, if that
- 10:30Speaker 2: remains the same, it's not gonna matter. I mean, to me,
- 10:34Speaker 2: those guys have to be like, hey, we're veteran professional players.
- 10:37Speaker 2: We've been in this league for a long time. We've
- 10:39Speaker 2: been playing baseball all our lives. We got to be
- 10:42Speaker 2: able to recognize what's a strike and what's a ball.
- 10:45Speaker 1: I think the bats have been more disciplined as of late, though.
- 10:48Speaker 2: They've been they've been good recently, I will give you that.
- 10:51Speaker 2: But you know, they've been good in the regular season
- 10:53Speaker 2: in the past two that's true. You know, you you
- 10:55Speaker 2: get up against the best of the best in terms
- 10:57Speaker 2: of you know, opposing pitching staffs, and suddenly it all
- 11:02Speaker 2: just kind of disappears. So to me, if they if
- 11:05Speaker 2: the offense doesn't know, if they go that route again,
- 11:09Speaker 2: none of this other stuff matters, right, Yeah. So, I mean,
- 11:13Speaker 2: and I was gonna mention Nola, but I figure I'll
- 11:15Speaker 2: let you you know.
- 11:15Speaker 1: Yeah, well, I mean, let's go yeah, let's get let's
- 11:18Speaker 1: get into Aaron Nola here, because he has struggled since
- 11:21Speaker 1: his return to the mound. I mean, you take a
- 11:24Speaker 1: look at I mean, we all know what happened is
- 11:26Speaker 1: it's six runs and two and one third innings. It
- 11:29Speaker 1: was a Sunday victory this past week over the Washington Nationals,
- 11:33Speaker 1: but a start that ended when seven consecutive batters reached
- 11:38Speaker 1: the bases safely. I mean, holy cow, he struck out
- 11:42Speaker 1: four in his first major league outing since May fourteenth.
- 11:47Speaker 1: But still, oh my gosh, really shaky. And look, this
- 11:52Speaker 1: happens to pictures every now and again who are out
- 11:54Speaker 1: for a significant period of time again mid May is
- 11:59Speaker 1: you know, time he pitched in the majors. It's going
- 12:01Speaker 1: to take a little bit of time for him to
- 12:03Speaker 1: get reacclimated to the major league mound. But I was
- 12:07Speaker 1: just I was really concerned, and I hope again I
- 12:11Speaker 1: don't want to get into hot take stuff here, I
- 12:13Speaker 1: really don't. Oh, Aaron Nola has done. His career is over.
- 12:16Speaker 1: I mean, how many times have we seen that over
- 12:18Speaker 1: the course of these of years with when it comes
- 12:21Speaker 1: to Nola. But you know, it does beg the question,
- 12:25Speaker 1: you know, is this really going to start to become
- 12:27Speaker 1: the downslide of his career.
- 12:30Speaker 2: I mean I'm willing to give him a little bit
- 12:33Speaker 2: more rope than that. Literally one start, yeah, after coming
- 12:39Speaker 2: back from injury. So I mean before we all, you know,
- 12:42Speaker 2: drive our cars off the Walt Whitman, let's just take
- 12:45Speaker 2: a break. I mean it was one start. Guys have
- 12:48Speaker 2: stinkers every now and again. Zach Wheeler has had a
- 12:51Speaker 2: couple of stinkers this season. Absolutely, it happens to literally everybody.
- 12:54Speaker 2: So let's just wait and see what happens there. I mean,
- 12:58Speaker 2: you know, give him a couple of starts, maybe find
- 13:00Speaker 2: his form that that could be something that that he's
- 13:03Speaker 2: still struggling with. I know, when Harper came back from
- 13:06Speaker 2: his injury earlier this year, it took him a little
- 13:09Speaker 2: bit of time to find his timing at the plate.
- 13:11Speaker 2: So that could be very well be something that happens
- 13:14Speaker 2: for Nola as well. But he is perhaps the key
- 13:18Speaker 2: now to to this pitching staff because you know, you
- 13:22Speaker 2: have a guy that you know, he's being paid very handsomely.
- 13:26Speaker 2: He's I would consider him, you know, a number two
- 13:29Speaker 2: starter when he's you know, completely right, and when he's
- 13:32Speaker 2: doing what he's what he's supposed to be doing. He's
- 13:35Speaker 2: a good pitcher when he's doing what he's supposed to do.
- 13:37Speaker 2: He's just got to get back to that point. And
- 13:40Speaker 2: you know, you're always worried about, oh, you know, how
- 13:44Speaker 2: many innings does this guy have on his arm?
- 13:46Speaker 1: This year?
- 13:47Speaker 2: Nola is only at about fifty innings. Now. I think,
- 13:50Speaker 2: you know, maybe maybe the numbers are getting away from
- 13:53Speaker 2: me a little bit, but I think he's only tossed
- 13:54Speaker 2: fifty major league innings this year, so he should be
- 13:57Speaker 2: fresh when when the postseason comes around. I know that.
- 14:02Speaker 2: You know, they manage a little bit differently in the postseason.
- 14:04Speaker 2: You know, you don't like to, you know, send a
- 14:08Speaker 2: guy through the lineup more than twice. But you know,
- 14:11Speaker 2: if there's a guy that whose arm can probably take
- 14:13Speaker 2: that workload, now, it's going to be Aaron Nola. So
- 14:16Speaker 2: it's it's up to him to you know, hey, I'm
- 14:19Speaker 2: the guy that you gave all that money to, and
- 14:21Speaker 2: here's why. That's what he's got to do.
- 14:23Speaker 1: So folks, let's not like Lenn said, let's not take
- 14:27Speaker 1: our cars off the Walt Whitman Bridge. At this point,
- 14:30Speaker 1: there's certainly time he is quote fresh as we get
- 14:33Speaker 1: into this latter part of the season and as this
- 14:36Speaker 1: team is looking towards the postseason. So I agree, I
- 14:39Speaker 1: think that. I mean, I mean, look, we can't overreact
- 14:42Speaker 1: with this.
- 14:43Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, if we're into mid September and he's
- 14:46Speaker 2: still doing this, okay, then we got a legitimate problem.
- 14:49Speaker 2: But you know, let's let him find himself a little
- 14:52Speaker 2: bit coming off with a long injury and we'll see
- 14:54Speaker 2: where we're at.
- 14:55Speaker 1: Yeah, all right, Well, before we head to break, we
- 14:58Speaker 1: do want to talk about Alec Baum and his return,
- 15:01Speaker 1: because I gotta tell you, after missing twenty six games
- 15:05Speaker 1: with a left rib fracture, he had a huge game
- 15:08Speaker 1: his first game back, hitting two out of three. Or
- 15:12Speaker 1: Or hit a homer as well off of lefty Mitchell
- 15:16Speaker 1: Parker and second inning to double the Phillies lead at
- 15:20Speaker 1: that point in the game. It proved necessary again because
- 15:23Speaker 1: Aaron Nola gave up those you know, six runs at
- 15:27Speaker 1: the top of the third inning this past Sunday. Alec
- 15:30Speaker 1: Bohm was a spark in his first game back. And
- 15:33Speaker 1: I think the one thing Len you know me, I've
- 15:37Speaker 1: been at Alec Bohm defender now for years and years
- 15:41Speaker 1: and years. The one thing that this guy has is resiliency,
- 15:45Speaker 1: and resiliency means something in the game of baseball. To
- 15:48Speaker 1: me when I look at players, whether they're injured, they're
- 15:51Speaker 1: going from team this team to that team, adapting to
- 15:55Speaker 1: different atmospheres, environments, fan bases. Alec Boem has resiliency here,
- 16:02Speaker 1: and I think that's an important aspect of who he
- 16:04Speaker 1: is as a player and what it means for this
- 16:06Speaker 1: Phillies team overall. I think he can be that spark
- 16:09Speaker 1: towards the end of the season here, I really do.
- 16:12Speaker 1: I've always been a Boem defender. I don't know, what
- 16:14Speaker 1: are you thinking about Alec Bowman his return here.
- 16:17Speaker 2: I mean, I think he's kind of got to be,
- 16:21Speaker 2: you know, the guy that we, you know, think can
- 16:23Speaker 2: he can be like a you know, a two eighty hitter,
- 16:26Speaker 2: a guy that can you know, they can drive the
- 16:28Speaker 2: ball a little bit. I'm not looking at him as
- 16:29Speaker 2: a huge power threat, but a guy that can you know,
- 16:32Speaker 2: hit doubles into the gap and stuff like that. I mean,
- 16:35Speaker 2: remember at the end of last season in the playoffs,
- 16:39Speaker 2: Alec Bohm was one of those guys that just completely
- 16:42Speaker 2: tanked in the playoffs and that we were just like, oh, geez,
- 16:45Speaker 2: do we need to do something at third base. I
- 16:47Speaker 2: remember he was on the trading block last year at
- 16:50Speaker 2: the at the end of the season that there were
- 16:53Speaker 2: they were.
- 16:53Speaker 1: We were talking about it.
- 16:54Speaker 2: Okay, let's get him out of here and get another
- 16:56Speaker 2: starter in here. So yeah, I mean he's got to
- 17:00Speaker 2: kind of maybe prove a little bit that he can
- 17:02Speaker 2: do that in the postseason. And he's a guy that
- 17:05Speaker 2: I think. You know, there's certain guys in the lineup,
- 17:08Speaker 2: like casianis for example, he is who he is. He's
- 17:11Speaker 2: always gonna be a free swinger. Yeah you're not looking
- 17:13Speaker 2: at him that's gonna draw a walk and get on base.
- 17:16Speaker 2: I think Alec Bowm is capable of doing that. So
- 17:18Speaker 2: he's a guy I mean, we he's a guy that
- 17:21Speaker 2: you need him to get on base and not just
- 17:24Speaker 2: being easy out. So yeah, he's I think he's kind
- 17:29Speaker 2: of an important part of this lineup. But I just
- 17:31Speaker 2: think it's the lineup as a whole. They've gotta they've
- 17:34Speaker 2: got to come through this year.
- 17:35Speaker 1: They do they do. The bats have to come through
- 17:37Speaker 1: for sure, and getting ready to take a break. But
- 17:40Speaker 1: if you're new to watching us on YouTube, folks, if
- 17:43Speaker 1: you like and subscribe. We don't think you'll be disappointed

- 18:15Speaker 1: I are over on Twitter, slash x and Instagram as well.
- 18:22Speaker 1: So with that being said, Lenn, we're gonna take a
- 18:24Speaker 1: little break here. When we get back. We got some
- 18:26Speaker 1: Flyers talk, some Eagles talk. You got anything else with
- 18:28Speaker 1: Phillies before we had to break.
- 18:31Speaker 2: No, I mean, they've just been in the midst of
- 18:33Speaker 2: a good stretch. It's good to see what they're doing
- 18:35Speaker 2: against Seattle. The Mets have been helping them out in
- 18:38Speaker 2: terms of going through some stumbles of their own. Yes,
- 18:40Speaker 2: so that I mean that's nice to see. Yeah, it's
- 18:44Speaker 2: it's it's helped out a lot. So hopefully you know,
- 18:46Speaker 2: both teams can keep it rolling with what they're doing.
- 18:49Speaker 1: Absolutely, all right, folks, when we get back from break,
- 18:52Speaker 1: we're gonna be talking about Phantoms, some farm system changes
- 18:58Speaker 1: to the Flyers farm system, and we're going to dive
- 19:01Speaker 1: into some Eagles talk. Stick with us, all right, we
- 19:05Speaker 1: are back and to dive into some Flyers talk and
- 19:10Speaker 1: in fact some farm system talk. Because one of our
- 19:15Speaker 1: friends we've had on the pod a number of times
- 19:17Speaker 1: excuse me, she's a writer not just at Broadstreet Hockey
- 19:20Speaker 1: dot com but phl y as well, Madeline Campbell. She
- 19:24Speaker 1: she wrote a great article just on how the Flyers
- 19:27Speaker 1: prospects in the farm system are really poised to take
- 19:30Speaker 1: a step forward under the new system and what is
- 19:33Speaker 1: that new system. So, as many know, the Flyers and
- 19:37Speaker 1: the Phantoms, I should say, now have a brand new
- 19:40Speaker 1: head coach in Lehigh Valley, John Snowden. He was named
- 19:47Speaker 1: he was named the head coach within the past month.
- 19:49Speaker 1: I believe he's going to be the new face of
- 19:51Speaker 1: this Phantoms team and he's going to be bringing a
- 19:56Speaker 1: new system. So just to let you know in turn
- 20:00Speaker 1: of what this system is going to be. Some quotes
- 20:02Speaker 1: from him in that article that Madeline Campbell wrote, he said,
- 20:07Speaker 1: the style of play that we have, it's very aggressive,
- 20:10Speaker 1: very fast, offensively attacking team. I want the puck. I
- 20:14Speaker 1: want to value the puck. I don't want to give
- 20:16Speaker 1: it away. I want to hold on to it. You
- 20:19Speaker 1: want the puck, you have to earn it back. That's
- 20:21Speaker 1: the way we're going to do a lot of things.
- 20:23Speaker 1: I want to drive our offense up. We're going to
- 20:25Speaker 1: defend the right away, We're going to check. We're going
- 20:28Speaker 1: to move the game from our defensive zone to the
- 20:30Speaker 1: offensive zone as fast as we can, and when we
- 20:33Speaker 1: get there, we want to stay there. We want to
- 20:36Speaker 1: grind them down. Len sounds a lot different than Ian Lapariz.
- 20:41Speaker 2: Right, Yeah, sign me up for all of that. I
- 20:44Speaker 2: mean that sounds very aggressive. Yes, they're constantly going to
- 20:50Speaker 2: be forcing the issue, which is, you know, I don't
- 20:53Speaker 2: care what team you root for, what sport you're watching,
- 20:57Speaker 2: you want a team that's going to push the action
- 20:59Speaker 2: and kinda dictate the pace. And that's what it sounds
- 21:03Speaker 2: like like Snowden's gonna do here. So I'm all for it.
- 21:06Speaker 1: And it seems i mean, based on Madeline's article here too,
- 21:10Speaker 1: it sounds like he and Rick Tockett are basically married
- 21:14Speaker 1: to that type of approach. He said, Rick Tockett and
- 21:17Speaker 1: I have a very similar approach and what makes a
- 21:20Speaker 1: player good and what makes a player hard to play against.
- 21:24Speaker 1: So for us, it's about being able to play with
- 21:26Speaker 1: people around you, like inside contact, guys on your back,
- 21:30Speaker 1: inviting contact. We feel the same way because it's hard
- 21:33Speaker 1: to play against them. I mean, if we see this
- 21:37Speaker 1: level of play with the Flyers, then as well, this
- 21:41Speaker 1: is gonna be some different hockey. It's gonna be some
- 21:43Speaker 1: fun hockey, and it's gonna take these guys, especially in
- 21:47Speaker 1: the farm system, from a developmental perspective to another level.
- 21:51Speaker 1: I mean, she mentioned players like Hunter McDonald that could
- 21:54Speaker 1: excel in this type of system, Ethan Samson, Oliver Bonk,
- 21:58Speaker 1: Alex Bump as well based on their skill level. And yes,
- 22:02Speaker 1: some of these guys may not be making it to
- 22:05Speaker 1: the NHL level. They may not be making it to
- 22:08Speaker 1: the Wells Fargo or what is it Exfinity Mobile Center Now.
- 22:11Speaker 2: Yeah, I think that's what it is. Now.
- 22:12Speaker 1: Damn it, we got a freaking it's not just what
- 22:15Speaker 1: it is. My tongue, it's not going to roll off
- 22:17Speaker 1: my tongue anymore, damn it. But uh, not a lot
- 22:21Speaker 1: of these guys, well, who knows who's going to make
- 22:23Speaker 1: it up in the future. But the fact that there
- 22:25Speaker 1: is a certain skill set and expectation, I uh, that
- 22:29Speaker 1: that that is going to be in place in Lehigh
- 22:33Speaker 1: Valley I think abodes very well for what these guys
- 22:36Speaker 1: can do possibly at.
- 22:37Speaker 2: The major league level. Yeah, no exactly is yeah, well, yeah,
- 22:43Speaker 2: I know what you mean. As long as the message
- 22:47Speaker 2: is the same throughout, you know, because we we can.
- 22:49Speaker 2: We complained about that last year where yeah, you know,
- 22:53Speaker 2: they've got there here in one thing in Lehigh Valley
- 22:56Speaker 2: and then when they got up to the Flyers, Tortorello
- 22:58Speaker 2: was telling them different stuff, and you know, you're you're
- 23:01Speaker 2: just kind of playing with your head on a swivel
- 23:03Speaker 2: because you don't you don't know what the hell you're
- 23:05Speaker 2: supposed to be doing. So as long as the messaging
- 23:07Speaker 2: between Snowden and what Tackett wants up in Philly is clear,
- 23:11Speaker 2: we're doing the same thing, we're using hopefully a lot
- 23:14Speaker 2: of the same terminology, then yeah, that's great. And and
- 23:18Speaker 2: that style of hockey that you know Snowden is talking about,
- 23:21Speaker 2: and that I think that Tackett is going to try
- 23:24Speaker 2: to do as well. Is a fun brand of hockey
- 23:27Speaker 2: to watch. So yeah, I'm I'm looking forward to all
- 23:30Speaker 2: that this year, and I think that they have a
- 23:32Speaker 2: good chance of being successful. I mean, you know, I
- 23:35Speaker 2: think a lot of the names with Lehigh Valley are
- 23:37Speaker 2: going to be similar to last year, perhaps going to
- 23:40Speaker 2: build some continuity. I don't know if Bank is Oliver
- 23:43Speaker 2: Bank is is I know there's like an age limit
- 23:47Speaker 2: thing with the AHL. Yeah, I don't know if he's
- 23:49Speaker 2: there yet, if he's going to be on the team
- 23:50Speaker 2: this year or if he goes back to London, but
- 23:53Speaker 2: I think he's a HL ready.
- 23:54Speaker 1: I'm sure he's a HL level ready this fall here,
- 23:59Speaker 1: and I think that a lot of a lot, a
- 24:01Speaker 1: lot of spotlight it's going to be shining on him.
- 24:03Speaker 2: Yeah, because that's a guy that you know, Look, you
- 24:05Speaker 2: spent a first round pick on this guy. He's a
- 24:08Speaker 2: guy that you know eventually projects as maybe a second
- 24:10Speaker 2: pairing defenseman. I want to see him. I want to
- 24:13Speaker 2: see how he's going to do. I want to see
- 24:15Speaker 2: how he acclimates and and you know, it's good to have,
- 24:19Speaker 2: you know, well thought of prospects in the system. They
- 24:22Speaker 2: are coming up. You know, I know a lot of times,
- 24:24Speaker 2: if they're that good, they're just automatically going to make
- 24:26Speaker 2: the you know, the big club. But there's guys like him.
- 24:30Speaker 2: There's guys like Bump, who I hear that the the
- 24:33Speaker 2: staff in Philadelphia is very happy with and very pleased
- 24:37Speaker 2: with how he's been doing. He's a guy that a
- 24:39Speaker 2: lot of people think could make the Flyers out of camp.
- 24:42Speaker 2: So maybe he's not even in Ley High Valley, but
- 24:44Speaker 2: it's good that they seem to have this, this group
- 24:47Speaker 2: of guys that are back and are there again. I said,
- 24:51Speaker 2: because I'm kind of comparing it to I live out
- 24:56Speaker 2: near Hershey, so I follow the Bears. I go to
- 24:59Speaker 2: Bears games every year, and it feels like this offseason
- 25:03Speaker 2: half their team went over to Russia to go play
- 25:05Speaker 2: in the KHL, and it's just like all these new guys.
- 25:09Speaker 2: So I expect them to take a state even the coach,
- 25:12Speaker 2: So I expect them to take a step back this year.
- 25:14Speaker 2: And I think if you've got a group that's been
- 25:18Speaker 2: together for a while in Lee High Valley with a
- 25:20Speaker 2: new coach, that's that's you know, pushing the action I
- 25:24Speaker 2: mean Lee High Valley could be a force in the
- 25:26Speaker 2: in the AHL this year. Yeah, if everything comes together,
- 25:29Speaker 2: So that'll be exciting to follow.
- 25:32Speaker 1: It's interesting what you mentioned with Alex Bump, like he
- 25:34Speaker 1: could potentially be on the on the Flyers roster. I mean,
- 25:40Speaker 1: his offensive acumen is already I think pretty well developed
- 25:44Speaker 1: from what we saw. I mean, he showed a lot
- 25:47Speaker 1: in the AHL playoffs. I mean it was a real
- 25:49Speaker 1: testament to that. But his game did drop off in
- 25:55Speaker 1: that postseason appearance to the point where you know, his
- 25:58Speaker 1: game still needed I'm fine tuning, but that offensive acumen
- 26:02Speaker 1: is definitely there with him, you know. And I just
- 26:05Speaker 1: I want him and Bunk to just be standing next
- 26:07Speaker 1: to each other as Bunk and Bump. A yeah, I know,
- 26:14Speaker 1: what a dope. I'm like, well, Bunk, and.
- 26:18Speaker 2: Maybe maybe you should call the Fantoms and try to
- 26:21Speaker 2: get a job there in their marketing department.
- 26:23Speaker 1: I think they would give me the middle finger and say,
- 26:25Speaker 1: why don't you go back to Bethlehem there you go
- 26:29Speaker 1: go screw yourself, mister Warren. So all right, well, uh,
- 26:34Speaker 1: there was some good Flyers talk there.
- 26:36Speaker 3: You know.
- 26:36Speaker 1: I can't wait for the season to start. I can't
- 26:38Speaker 1: wait for the season to start. Folks go back in
- 26:40Speaker 1: the feed uh Table talk show. This past week, Ryan
- 26:44Speaker 1: Quigley from brush Street Hockey dot Com was on. We
- 26:46Speaker 1: had a great talk about the Flyers and just what
- 26:48Speaker 1: what you know this off season was what we were
- 26:51Speaker 1: able to expect or what we should be expecting this
- 26:55Speaker 1: coming season. So, Buddy, before I let you go, got
- 26:57Speaker 1: to get into some birds talk because the season's almost
- 26:59Speaker 1: he y oh god. A lot of injuries on this team,
- 27:04Speaker 1: a lot of injuries happening. But specifically I wanted to
- 27:09Speaker 1: get into with you when I was really concerned when CJ.
- 27:13Speaker 1: Gardner Johnson left in that trade. It was like, man,
- 27:17Speaker 1: they bring They only had him for like two years.
- 27:19Speaker 1: They only had him for two total years during his
- 27:22Speaker 1: time with this Eagles defense, and he made such a
- 27:26Speaker 1: dramatic impact six interceptions in both seasons, and it's like, man,
- 27:30Speaker 1: you lose that type of productivity, you lose that type
- 27:33Speaker 1: of the attitude. Yeah, the energy and attitude. Absolutely. But
- 27:37Speaker 1: now it seems that the Eagles do have their next
- 27:40Speaker 1: starting safety that's gonna be playing next to the red
- 27:42Speaker 1: blanken ship in Andrew mccouba, a rookie who was has
- 27:48Speaker 1: been fantastic in this preseason so far. We saw that
- 27:52Speaker 1: pick six interception, Oh my gosh, it was great during
- 27:56Speaker 1: the Browns preseason game. This ti Yes, Yes, absolutely great,
- 28:02Speaker 1: great news. I'm feeling better about the safety position. We've
- 28:05Speaker 1: talked a number of times during this offseason about how
- 28:07Speaker 1: that could potentially be a weak part of this team.
- 28:10Speaker 1: I'm feeling better about it. Good news for the secondary. However, however,
- 28:15Speaker 1: there are a lot of questions about cornerback two. Who's
- 28:18Speaker 1: going to be opposite of Quinnon Mitchell, Who's going to
- 28:23Speaker 1: be opposite of him? And Vic Fangio has basically said
- 28:26Speaker 1: at this point he admitted they don't have any answers
- 28:29Speaker 1: right now to the second cornerback position. I mean right now.
- 28:32Speaker 1: I mean you can mention Jacryn Bennett. I think adri
- 28:36Speaker 1: Jackson has actually played his way off the team. I
- 28:40Speaker 1: really don't think he's going to I'll be surprised if
- 28:43Speaker 1: they do actually keep him. Mac McWilliams is another guy
- 28:47Speaker 1: competing for this job as well. I mean, they're talking
- 28:49Speaker 1: about moving Cooper Dejen out outside full time here. I'm
- 28:55Speaker 1: really concerned about cornerback two because you know, Darius Slay
- 28:59Speaker 1: hasn't talked about a lot during this offseason just how
- 29:02Speaker 1: valuable he was. No, he wasn't one hundred percent perfect
- 29:05Speaker 1: last year, however, Man, he made some great plays his
- 29:09Speaker 1: veteran leadership. I think this could be the thorn in
- 29:13Speaker 1: the Achilles heel in this Eagles defense, you know, in
- 29:16Speaker 1: the first few weeks of the season.
- 29:18Speaker 2: Here.
- 29:18Speaker 1: Man, I'm a little concerned.
- 29:19Speaker 2: I mean, yeah, I mean this is a it's a
- 29:21Speaker 2: passing league, so yeah, I mean people are gonna be
- 29:26Speaker 2: there's gonna be quarterbacks that are just eyeing that other
- 29:29Speaker 2: side of the field, whatever side Mitchell isn't on, They're
- 29:32Speaker 2: they're gonna be focusing on on you know, targeting that area.
- 29:36Speaker 2: So I don't know, you know, if if they're confident
- 29:40Speaker 2: enough in Degene at this point to move him to
- 29:43Speaker 2: the outside. But even if you do that, then okay,
- 29:46Speaker 2: do you have somebody that you trust in the slot
- 29:48Speaker 2: because you know, we know what the Gene can do
- 29:51Speaker 2: as a slot corner. Yeah, we know how good he
- 29:54Speaker 2: is at it. And if you don't have to move
- 29:57Speaker 2: him off of that, you really don't want to, right
- 29:59Speaker 2: but you know, yeah, it's uh, I unfortunately think at
- 30:05Speaker 2: this point.
- 30:06Speaker 1: You know, yeah, Killey Ringo is not lighting things up either.
- 30:11Speaker 1: I mean, there was the hope that some of these
- 30:13Speaker 1: guys who have been depth positions, you know, for a while,
- 30:16Speaker 1: now we're going to be able to really step up
- 30:18Speaker 1: and Eli Rix, you know, come on, Ringo was a
- 30:23Speaker 1: guy that I.
- 30:23Speaker 2: Really kind of had hoped it would kind of step up,
- 30:26Speaker 2: and I've been a little disappointed in the fact that
- 30:28Speaker 2: he hasn't been able to because I think if you
- 30:30Speaker 2: gave that that outside corner spot to de Gene, I
- 30:34Speaker 2: think he could do it. But again, now you're making
- 30:38Speaker 2: another position week two, exactly who's going to take less
- 30:41Speaker 2: you have one of those guys that maybe and you're
- 30:45Speaker 2: running out of time in the preseason. But you know,
- 30:47Speaker 2: I don't know if they've been cycling those guys in
- 30:50Speaker 2: the slot corner position and seeing if any of them
- 30:53Speaker 2: are good enough at that to, you know, maybe just
- 30:56Speaker 2: take that role and make it at least passable while
- 30:59Speaker 2: the Gene bumps to the outside. You know, I don't
- 31:02Speaker 2: know if any of that has happened, but you know,
- 31:04Speaker 2: you're gonna have to come up with some answers there.
- 31:06Speaker 1: I don't like it. I just don't like that with
- 31:09Speaker 1: Cooper Degene what we saw last year playing in the
- 31:12Speaker 1: in the in these nickel packages that that Vic Fangio
- 31:16Speaker 1: enjoys playing, even the dime packages that he enjoys uh
- 31:20Speaker 1: putting out on the field. That slot corner position is
- 31:23Speaker 1: so absolutely critical. I'm not saying that cornerback two is,
- 31:26Speaker 1: and of course it is, you know, especially when you're
- 31:29Speaker 1: playing a team, you know, like you know, the Bengals,
- 31:31Speaker 1: when you have prolific wide receivers like t Higgins and
- 31:34Speaker 1: Jamar Chase, you know you're gonna need exactly you know,
- 31:38Speaker 1: but you're also going to need to protect that over
- 31:42Speaker 1: the middle part of the field and have somebody that understands,
- 31:46Speaker 1: you know what, what they're reading in terms of the offense.
- 31:49Speaker 1: And Cooper Degene is so good at that. I would
- 31:52Speaker 1: hate to see him moving out to the outside. I
- 31:55Speaker 1: really would. And it it I don't know, losing Darius
- 31:58Speaker 1: Lay it kind of kind of stinks here, really does Yeah.
- 32:01Speaker 2: You you almost wonder if maybe they got to look
- 32:04Speaker 2: at a trade of some sort.
- 32:07Speaker 1: They did and Bennett though, you know, and it's like, well,
- 32:11Speaker 1: things are still up in the air there.
- 32:12Speaker 2: I mean, you might need a bigger name than that.
- 32:15Speaker 1: I know. I look, I'm gonna be talking about it
- 32:20Speaker 1: with our guest Tommy, but uh, you know what, what
- 32:23Speaker 1: were your thoughts on John Metchi, you know, the the
- 32:27Speaker 1: trade with the Texans. You know, I thought it was interesting,
- 32:29Speaker 1: you know, I because they really him, because the forty
- 32:32Speaker 1: nine ers also wanted him to and the Eagles.
- 32:34Speaker 2: I remember him at Alabama and like, damn, he's a
- 32:38Speaker 2: good player. Like he's a guy I wouldn't mind seeing
- 32:40Speaker 2: on the Eagle. So I mean, yeah, why not give
- 32:43Speaker 2: give him a shot? I mean I know that they've
- 32:45Speaker 2: got some you know, some people in the in the
- 32:47Speaker 2: the depth positions there at wide receiver they really like.
- 32:51Speaker 2: So I feel like maybe him coming in at this
- 32:54Speaker 2: point in the game, he's fighting a bit of an
- 32:56Speaker 2: uphill battle just because he hasn't been with the Eagles
- 32:59Speaker 2: since maybe the beginning of camp. Yeah, you know, it
- 33:02Speaker 2: had enough time as you would like to establish yourself.
- 33:05Speaker 2: But I mean he's a guy that if he made
- 33:08Speaker 2: the fifty three man roster, I I'd be excited about it.
- 33:12Speaker 2: I think he can. I think he can play.
- 33:14Speaker 1: Yeah, it's gonna be interesting if you don't, because I
- 33:17Speaker 1: mean he's good. They traded for him he's gonna make
- 33:19Speaker 1: the fifty three man roster. In my opinion, he's gonna
- 33:22Speaker 1: make it because they made the trade for him. Then
- 33:24Speaker 1: again last year around this time, they made the trade
- 33:26Speaker 1: for John Dotson and we kind of saw what he
- 33:30Speaker 1: wasn't throughout the season. It's just kind of interesting how
- 33:33Speaker 1: how he is making these wide receiver trades the past
- 33:36Speaker 1: two seasons here or that this year and last year,
- 33:39Speaker 1: and we still don't we don't know the direction of
- 33:43Speaker 1: where these guys are gonna fit into this coming season.
- 33:46Speaker 1: That's kind of an interesting storyline here.
- 33:49Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, there are certain spots on this team that, like,
- 33:54Speaker 2: you know, yes, they just won the Super Bowl. Yes,
- 33:56Speaker 2: they're bringing a lot of you know, talent back, and
- 33:59Speaker 2: they're very strong in a lot of positions. But there's
- 34:01Speaker 2: certainly some soft underbellies on this team that you know,
- 34:06Speaker 2: you you can you can scheme for, I think on
- 34:09Speaker 2: both sides of the ball.
- 34:10Speaker 1: Yep. Absolutely, all right, Well, buddy, I'll let you go.
- 34:12Speaker 1: We're gonna get to our interview here and our discussion
- 34:15Speaker 1: more Eagles talk along the way. Are you sure you
- 34:17Speaker 1: don't want to come down to the Fantasy football draft?
- 34:20Speaker 1: You know, just call off.
- 34:23Speaker 2: Well, I can't do that because I'm the only person there.
- 34:27Speaker 1: I will call them and say, look, he is really sick,
- 34:31Speaker 1: he's on the turlet.
- 34:34Speaker 2: They they don't, They couldn't care less about you, really,
- 34:38Speaker 2: And yeah, I would literally rather be anywhere that at
- 34:41Speaker 2: that place. I know, I know, and I mean now
- 34:44Speaker 2: and forever. Yeah, I'm if.
- 34:48Speaker 1: You're hiring, Oh, if you're hiring folks out there, get
- 34:52Speaker 1: touch Len Huntsicker. Wait, I'm not on social anymore. What
- 34:57Speaker 1: are we gonna do here?
- 34:58Speaker 2: Well, they can, they can, they can contact you and
- 35:01Speaker 2: email the show, folks. I'm yeah, email the show.
- 35:04Speaker 1: Here we go, folks, Philadelphia Sports Table at gmail dot com.
- 35:07Speaker 1: See how I dovetailed that rate in there?
- 35:09Speaker 2: There you go. And you were you were talking about
- 35:12Speaker 2: hot takes earlier. Yeah, I mean you don't get tired
- 35:15Speaker 2: of hot takes if you're not on social media.
- 35:17Speaker 1: That is very saying something to give some thought about tonight, right, folks,
- 35:24Speaker 1: Philadelphia Sports Table at gmail dot com. If you'd love
- 35:26Speaker 1: to email us about any topic here on the show,
- 35:28Speaker 1: we'd love to hear from you and respond to your email.
- 35:31Speaker 1: And Lyn, I'm gonna let you go, buddy. We'll see
- 35:34Speaker 1: you later. We got more birds talk right coming your way, folks,
- 35:37Speaker 1: stick with us.
- 35:39Speaker 2: And now on the table.
- 35:44Speaker 1: All right, we are backing to dive into this Philadelphia
- 35:46Speaker 1: Eagles team that much more. Had a great conversation with
- 35:49Speaker 1: Len specifically about the secondary, but now to really dive
- 35:53Speaker 1: into what we've been seeing during training camp, what we
- 35:56Speaker 1: can expect this coming season. We've got our good friend
- 35:59Speaker 1: Tommy's over on Twitter slash x search out dose man
- 36:02Speaker 1: because he has got fantastic content, really your daily dose
- 36:07Speaker 1: for the Philadelphia Eagles, and he's doing great things over
- 36:10Speaker 1: on Twitter slash x. We got Tommy, buddy man, how
- 36:13Speaker 1: you doing it? Thanks so much for jumping on.
- 36:15Speaker 3: Deal, good man, glad. I appreciate it bringing me on
- 36:18Speaker 3: back man. Real excited.
- 36:19Speaker 1: Yeah, absolutely, but I cannot wait for this season. I mean,
- 36:22Speaker 1: I will say first and foremost kind of stinks that
- 36:25Speaker 1: there are so many injuries going on with this team
- 36:27Speaker 1: right now. I think a lot of us have this
- 36:29Speaker 1: little bit of nervousness in the back of our minds
- 36:32Speaker 1: about what's happening from a health perspective with this team
- 36:36Speaker 1: and how that's going to translate to certain aspects of
- 36:38Speaker 1: what we're going to be seeing on offensive defense, But
- 36:40Speaker 1: I first wanted to dive into the defense first because,
- 36:44Speaker 1: like I said, my co host and I we were
- 36:46Speaker 1: just talking about cornerback number two on this team and
- 36:49Speaker 1: what this position may look like this coming season. Frankly,
- 36:52Speaker 1: from all reports, from everything we have seen thus far,
- 36:55Speaker 1: I do think a Dori Jackson is kind of playing
- 36:58Speaker 1: his way out of this position. He could be playing
- 37:01Speaker 1: his way off the team at this point. And when
- 37:04Speaker 1: they initially brought him in, wasn't necessarily the biggest fan
- 37:07Speaker 1: of the signing had high hopes for him. For sure,
- 37:09Speaker 1: Killey Ringo hasn't been too too impressive ja Core and
- 37:13Speaker 1: Bennett that they get in the trade, he could be
- 37:15Speaker 1: that cornerback number two positions. So let's start off here
- 37:19Speaker 1: talking about where CB two may be going this season.
- 37:23Speaker 1: What are your thoughts here dose.
- 37:25Speaker 3: You know, looking at the depth chart just just off
- 37:30Speaker 3: the top of my head, if I were to put
- 37:32Speaker 3: a depth chart, it would probably go Kaylee Ringo, Jacoryan Bennett,
- 37:35Speaker 3: and Adorri Jackson. I feel like we watched the Bengals game,
- 37:40Speaker 3: both of them just struggled right off the bat. Ye mean,
- 37:44Speaker 3: they were attacking Ringo right away and people would go
- 37:48Speaker 3: to his defense. Oh he was guarding Jamar Chase. Well,
- 37:50Speaker 3: he's gonna guard those guys. He's gonna, I mean, we're gonna.
- 37:53Speaker 3: We're gonna have quinnyon follow wide receiver one. Of course,
- 37:56Speaker 3: we cannot allow the CB two spot right now to
- 38:00Speaker 3: stay on the same side. Quinnon has to shadow these guys. So,
- 38:04Speaker 3: I mean, you look at our schedule, man, like we
- 38:06Speaker 3: have the Vikings, like we have the Lions, we have
- 38:09Speaker 3: the Commanders. Even now, I know the Terry situation is
- 38:12Speaker 3: completely out of control right now, but let's just say
- 38:15Speaker 3: he does come back, man, Like, yes, Ringo or one
- 38:18Speaker 3: of them got a guard debo.
- 38:19Speaker 1: And by the way, in New York, these wide.
- 38:23Speaker 3: Receiver twos are getting better and better each year. I mean,
- 38:27Speaker 3: let's let's keep let's put this into perspective. Devonte Smith
- 38:30Speaker 3: is a wide receiver too. Yeah, I mean ste Higgins
- 38:34Speaker 3: is a wide receiver to Addison Waddell. These are some
- 38:38Speaker 3: guys that could be wide receiver ones on half of
- 38:40Speaker 3: the league. So, like we saw Sleigh last year, he
- 38:44Speaker 3: could keep up with them. He's one of those guys,
- 38:48Speaker 3: A younger guy like Ringo is. It's it's tough a
- 38:50Speaker 3: Dori Jackson's a veteran guy, so there's a little bit
- 38:52Speaker 3: more Okay, maybe we're a little bit more comfortable, but
- 38:55Speaker 3: you know, then we watched him guard wide receiver threes
- 38:58Speaker 3: against Cincinnati just wasn't strong. I think bringing in Jacrian
- 39:02Speaker 3: Bennett is a good move. The little we saw from
- 39:06Speaker 3: him in with the Raiders showed real well, really battle
- 39:11Speaker 3: lot of injuries, but I mean we saw him against
- 39:13Speaker 3: Cleveland played real well. If I had to guess how
- 39:16Speaker 3: it's gonna go based on what I've been seeing, when
- 39:18Speaker 3: I've been reading, when I've been talking to some people
- 39:20Speaker 3: about I think you're gonna see a Dori Jackson week one.
- 39:25Speaker 3: I think that is the consensus I've seen, you know,
- 39:28Speaker 3: you know Elliott Off of ninety four say it. VIC
- 39:32Speaker 3: has been starting you know, Jackson Moore with the first
- 39:35Speaker 3: team at camp, but I also think we might see
- 39:39Speaker 3: more of a rotation when it comes to certain teams.
- 39:44Speaker 3: I personally think I'm a big fan of Bennett. I
- 39:46Speaker 3: think Bennett's gonna be a real good guy for us.
- 39:47Speaker 3: I think if he could stay healthy and stay on
- 39:49Speaker 3: the field. Agree, you know, Vic's gonna have him in
- 39:53Speaker 3: positions where he can succeed. But it's definitely concerning because
- 39:57Speaker 3: you do look at the schedule and some of the
- 39:59Speaker 3: teams we play great wide receiver twos, and I just
- 40:03Speaker 3: think Kaylie Ringo hasn't picked up on it yet. I
- 40:06Speaker 3: don't think he's comfortable one hundred percent. I don't think
- 40:10Speaker 3: it's all there. I don't think a Dori Jackson's all there.
- 40:13Speaker 3: I think they brought in Bennett because they saw those
- 40:15Speaker 3: two and went, all right, we definitely need to do something.
- 40:18Speaker 3: I think Bennett is going to be the guy that
- 40:20Speaker 3: does get in the most. But I think week one,
- 40:22Speaker 3: from what I've seen, you will see a Dori Jackson.
- 40:25Speaker 1: Yeah. Interesting. It's going to be interesting to follow and
- 40:28Speaker 1: how the development of that number two cornerback actually manifest
- 40:32Speaker 1: itself during the course of the season, because I mean,
- 40:34Speaker 1: all these guys are quote projected to potentially have a
- 40:39Speaker 1: higher ceiling than what we're seeing from them now. But
- 40:42Speaker 1: you know, I mean as we're moving along here throughout camp,
- 40:46Speaker 1: you know, and it happens every year, Tommy, it happens
- 40:49Speaker 1: every single year. You see certain studs that you're like,
- 40:52Speaker 1: you know what, they're really going to be contributors this year,
- 40:54Speaker 1: and then you also see weaknesses throughout Camp two, and
- 40:58Speaker 1: I want to get into this right now. So let's
- 41:00Speaker 1: get into the studs that you've been seeing so far
- 41:03Speaker 1: or a stud and then and then we'll end that
- 41:06Speaker 1: part with the weak player on the defensive side of
- 41:10Speaker 1: the ball. So, who is the one stud in your
- 41:12Speaker 1: mind that's really gonna help take this Eagles defense to
- 41:15Speaker 1: the next level. If it's maybe somebody who maybe is
- 41:17Speaker 1: surprising for you or somebody that you've really been honing
- 41:20Speaker 1: in on, who is that? Who's that studding camp from
- 41:23Speaker 1: a defensive perspective.
- 41:25Speaker 3: Man, I'm in a big Eagles you know group chat
- 41:28Speaker 3: on twinter. We were actually talking about this the other
- 41:30Speaker 3: day because we were like, hey, man, like we did
- 41:33Speaker 3: lease some core guys, so we I have two, but
- 41:37Speaker 3: one of them, like rookie safety Andrew mccooba. He's battled
- 41:43Speaker 3: injuries early, he really has. But man, every time he's
- 41:47Speaker 3: on the training you know, he's in training camp and
- 41:50Speaker 3: he's on that field. I mean, the tweets about him
- 41:52Speaker 3: are just their eye opening. He's all over the field.
- 41:54Speaker 3: We saw what he did against Cleveland, Yes, you know,
- 41:56Speaker 3: the pick six, the fumble recovery. He was flying around everywhere.
- 42:00Speaker 3: But due to the injuries we've we've seen so far,
- 42:03Speaker 3: I'm not going to use him as the stud I
- 42:05Speaker 3: on this defense. I really think so far the stud
- 42:09Speaker 3: at least I've read the most about it's gotta be Johatcampbell.
- 42:14Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 42:14Speaker 3: Everything I've read about him is he's you know, he's
- 42:18Speaker 3: guarding the running back out of backfield, sometimes covering Godard,
- 42:22Speaker 3: He's they're putting him at edge. It seems like he
- 42:23Speaker 3: can do everything. And I think the versatility is going
- 42:28Speaker 3: to be good for him in this defense because yes,
- 42:30Speaker 3: he can play cover as a middle linebacker. He can
- 42:33Speaker 3: he can pair up with Bond, but when Da Kobe
- 42:35Speaker 3: comes back, he could drop down to edge. Sometimes he
- 42:37Speaker 3: can cover the running back out of the backfield. I've
- 42:39Speaker 3: read so much about this kid that's positive. I haven't
- 42:42Speaker 3: seen one thing about him struggling.
- 42:44Speaker 2: YEA one.
- 42:45Speaker 3: And the people I follow, they are definitely not shy
- 42:48Speaker 3: about saying the Eagles are struggling. I'll tell you that.
- 42:50Speaker 3: Philly reporters, they will let you know. But I haven't
- 42:53Speaker 3: read one negative thing about this kid. And it's just sure,
- 42:59Speaker 3: you know, with the question mark when he got drafted
- 43:01Speaker 3: was the injuries. We haven't heard anything about it now.
- 43:03Speaker 3: Injuries are going to happen, But I really think what
- 43:07Speaker 3: Vic can do with this kid, This linebacking course probably
- 43:10Speaker 3: the best we've had in fifteen five years.
- 43:13Speaker 1: On the flip side of that, who do you think
- 43:15Speaker 1: is the weakness on this defense here in terms of
- 43:19Speaker 1: you know that one week player that may potentially be
- 43:22Speaker 1: a concern here? What are you thinking?
- 43:24Speaker 3: I really don't think there's one player. I know we
- 43:27Speaker 3: discussed the CB two position, right, but I do want
- 43:29Speaker 3: to note I do think the true weakness is the
- 43:32Speaker 3: safety room. A lot of the concern is around that
- 43:37Speaker 3: that center field role. CJ played a great center field
- 43:41Speaker 3: role last year, stayed up top a lot, you know,
- 43:45Speaker 3: safety help on some some corners here and there. But
- 43:48Speaker 3: now you take him away, your your your safety room
- 43:51Speaker 3: goes as follows. Read your is your number one safety
- 43:55Speaker 3: on that one side, and then under him is Tristan McCollum.
- 43:58Speaker 3: Then you have CJ. I'm sorry of Sidney Brown and
- 44:01Speaker 3: mccuba batting it out, one of them go down. We
- 44:05Speaker 3: don't have many safeties and Reed is not a huge
- 44:09Speaker 3: cover guy. He's just not He's good at kind of
- 44:12Speaker 3: roaming the middle of the field. So I think as
- 44:15Speaker 3: a whole, the safety room is my biggest weakness. And
- 44:18Speaker 3: I've seen a lot of things about Justin Simmons possibly
- 44:21Speaker 3: being a candidate to bring in, and I just think
- 44:25Speaker 3: that overall, if Reid ever went down, the safety room's
- 44:28Speaker 3: in deep trouble. I really think it is. And that's
- 44:31Speaker 3: a place where you know, CJ played great, very good
- 44:35Speaker 3: there last year, but at times safety room was sometimes
- 44:39Speaker 3: an issue. So now you take away CJ and you
- 44:41Speaker 3: leave Reed to kind of carry the workload. He got
- 44:45Speaker 3: an inexperienced safety in Sidney Brown because he hasn't played
- 44:48Speaker 3: much there, came back from an ACL. You have mccouba,
- 44:51Speaker 3: who's a rookie who's battling injury now, so who knows
- 44:55Speaker 3: if he can even stay on the field for a
- 44:57Speaker 3: whole season. And then Tristan McCollum was a big special
- 45:00Speaker 3: teams guy and got in in some of those games
- 45:03Speaker 3: later in the season when we were up a bunch.
- 45:04Speaker 3: So there's a lot of inexperience in that safety room,
- 45:07Speaker 3: which is to me the biggest weakness on the defense,
- 45:10Speaker 3: and it's a huge concern because you need good safeties.
- 45:12Speaker 1: Absolutely definitely a concern. I mean from a depth standpoint,
- 45:15Speaker 1: like you're talking about one guy goes down, that could
- 45:18Speaker 1: be a ridiculous negative domino effect for sure in terms
- 45:22Speaker 1: of the safety position. But let's move over to the
- 45:24Speaker 1: offense now here dose because I want to get into
- 45:29Speaker 1: John Metchi, new wide receiver that was just acquired this
- 45:32Speaker 1: past week, played twenty nine games for the Texans, only
- 45:35Speaker 1: starting in three of them. It's got a total of
- 45:37Speaker 1: four hundred and twelve yards on forty catches one touchdown
- 45:41Speaker 1: during his tenure in Houston. I've been trying to think,
- 45:45Speaker 1: you know, you look at what his stats are, you
- 45:48Speaker 1: look at you your eye test when you're actually watching
- 45:51Speaker 1: video of him and what he was able to do
- 45:54Speaker 1: in Houston. I'm wondering what type of aspect he's going
- 45:59Speaker 1: to bring two who this offense? And I'm wondering, do
- 46:02Speaker 1: you see him as a key part of this wide
- 46:04Speaker 1: receiver group and how is it inevitably going to be
- 46:07Speaker 1: utilized in the passing game? What are your thoughts here.
- 46:11Speaker 3: I'm a big fan of John Metchi, and I tell
- 46:13Speaker 3: people this that I've been talking to recently because I
- 46:16Speaker 3: think a lot of people I love diving into, you know,
- 46:19Speaker 3: players and football and all that I've really become a
- 46:21Speaker 3: dig student of the game. And if you take a
- 46:23Speaker 3: look at match, you just based off the eye test.
- 46:25Speaker 3: If we're looking at stats alone, they're not great, but
- 46:27Speaker 3: nobody knows. But then you dig deeper. Wide he missed
- 46:30Speaker 3: his whole rookie season right battling leukemia. Yeah, I mean
- 46:35Speaker 3: he he wrote missed a whole rookie season. He comes back.
- 46:38Speaker 3: That wide receiver room is filled with Nico Collins, Tank Dell,
- 46:42Speaker 3: Noah Brown, the addition of Dalton shows. So that second year,
- 46:45Speaker 3: you're you're, you're, you're the fourth option on that offense.
- 46:49Speaker 3: Then the next year they bring in Stefan Diggs. You're
- 46:52Speaker 3: you're You're buried there. You're buried there. And he had
- 46:54Speaker 3: good production last year with that injured wide receiver room.
- 46:58Speaker 3: Philly brought him in my opinion, because as much as
- 47:02Speaker 3: I hate to say it, I do think that wide
- 47:04Speaker 3: receiver three position is up for grabs. I know, Jahan Dotson,
- 47:08Speaker 3: we gave up a third from last year. I don't
- 47:10Speaker 3: think the production was all there.
- 47:11Speaker 2: But also you got to.
- 47:12Speaker 3: Take a look at the offense. You know, you have
- 47:14Speaker 3: aj and Devonte Smith, but we're run first off. How
- 47:17Speaker 3: do you run offense, ye a lot of Saku Jalen.
- 47:22Speaker 3: Jalen likes to roll out a lot rarely. If you
- 47:25Speaker 3: go back to even Jalen's first year as a starter
- 47:28Speaker 3: wide receiver, three rarely got any targets or looks their way.
- 47:33Speaker 3: And that just goes to show that this offense really
- 47:37Speaker 3: has it's either your first option, your second option, run
- 47:40Speaker 3: the ball. It's a very, very i want to say,
- 47:44Speaker 3: systematic offense, and it really benefits the run game. Now,
- 47:50Speaker 3: I do think it adds a great depth because we
- 47:54Speaker 3: saw last year early in the season Aj went down
- 47:57Speaker 3: with that hamstring, which he's still battling. Now. He has
- 47:59Speaker 3: a practice in eighteen gains, which to me is not concerning.
- 48:03Speaker 3: I like what they're doing keeping them out, getting him
- 48:04Speaker 3: ready for Week one. Hamstrings can linger. It's a great move.
- 48:08Speaker 3: But if we have that again where AJ's missing three weeks,
- 48:11Speaker 3: three of the first four weeks, Smitty goes down with something.
- 48:14Speaker 3: You have Johan Metchi, Johnny Wilson who's played well, Darius Cooper,
- 48:19Speaker 3: who by the way, has been absolutely Yeah. I mean
- 48:22Speaker 3: he needs in my opinion, he's got to make the
- 48:24Speaker 3: roster some way. Yes, but you take a look so
- 48:27Speaker 3: then it offers you a little bit more depth that
- 48:30Speaker 3: you're comfortable with. Last year, in that Tampa game of
- 48:32Speaker 3: Week four, you know, we were throwing to Johan was
- 48:35Speaker 3: number one, but you had a rookie Johnny Wilson. You
- 48:38Speaker 3: had Paris Campbell who was a practice squad guy for
- 48:40Speaker 3: the last two years before that. You had a Naiah
- 48:43Speaker 3: Smith who was a fifth round rookie that what just
- 48:47Speaker 3: didn't get much time at all, So the options weren't there. Now,
- 48:50Speaker 3: if that ever happens again, you're throwing to Jahan, You're
- 48:53Speaker 3: throwing to John Matchie, who've both been in the league
- 48:55Speaker 3: for a few years now. They're comfortable as a league guy.
- 48:58Speaker 3: You have back up, you have Johnny Wilson. So I
- 49:01Speaker 3: really think he brings great depth. But I also think
- 49:05Speaker 3: he is going to get incorporated and involved right away
- 49:09Speaker 3: because he's a really quick guy on the outside. He
- 49:11Speaker 3: gets great separation, he has pretty solid hands. He's a
- 49:15Speaker 3: little undersized for the role he was given in Houston,
- 49:19Speaker 3: but I think he'll fit good in here because, like
- 49:22Speaker 3: I said, I think Kevin Putulo's style. Yeah, we're gonna
- 49:25Speaker 3: be run heavy, but I've heard a lot about how
- 49:27Speaker 3: Jalen's passing more. And I mean I just saw today.
- 49:30Speaker 3: I'm looking at it right now. Hurts was fourteen to
- 49:32Speaker 3: fifteen today for four touchdowns without aj without Schmidty, without
- 49:36Speaker 3: half the offensive line. I mean he threw to Darius
- 49:39Speaker 3: Cooper eight targets today. I mean, so he's getting comfortable
- 49:43Speaker 3: throwing to these guys. So the more comfortable he can
- 49:45Speaker 3: get thrown to those guys, I think he's just gonna
- 49:47Speaker 3: trust these guys more. I think Metchi's a guy you
- 49:49Speaker 3: can trust because he's been in the league for a
- 49:51Speaker 3: little bit now, so he's a reliable depth guy. And
- 49:56Speaker 3: I do think that wide receiver three spot is open.
- 49:59Speaker 3: I really do.
- 50:00Speaker 1: It's interesting how you mentioned trusting the depth, especially from
- 50:03Speaker 1: a receiving standpoint, because it's a really good segue dose
- 50:07Speaker 1: into our next topic here, because I've been getting more
- 50:10Speaker 1: and more concerned about the tight end position just in
- 50:13Speaker 1: terms of the depth, because look, Dallas Goddard, I mean,
- 50:16Speaker 1: he's not a young pup anymore, and he continues to
- 50:19Speaker 1: fight through injuries year after year. That's you know the
- 50:22Speaker 1: nature of the game, nature of the beast. Yet you
- 50:25Speaker 1: know we know how key that he is. As you
- 50:28Speaker 1: just mentioned, you know, for the success of this offense. Honestly,
- 50:31Speaker 1: I don't think the Eagles win the Super Bowl without
- 50:34Speaker 1: Dallas Goddard. They don't win the Super Bowl without a
- 50:36Speaker 1: lot of various moving parts of that Eagles offense from
- 50:38Speaker 1: last season. However, the depth behind him, though, is very concerning.
- 50:46Speaker 1: It isn't that inspiring at all. So what are your
- 50:49Speaker 1: thoughts on the tight end position, the overall depth behind
- 50:53Speaker 1: Dallas Goddard if he were to go down. I mean,
- 50:55Speaker 1: that does change some things here and there.
- 50:58Speaker 3: I definitely think the depth at time height end is
- 51:00Speaker 3: a little thin. And with Dallas got it, he was
- 51:04Speaker 3: a question mark this offseason where we're gonna resign him,
- 51:07Speaker 3: we we're gonna trade him. I made a few posts
- 51:10Speaker 3: about it just to see what people thought. I mean,
- 51:12Speaker 3: he's look, he's a thirty year old guy, right, He's
- 51:14Speaker 3: getting into those thirties. He hasn't played fifteen games in
- 51:19Speaker 3: a season since twenty twenty one. At twenty twenty two,
- 51:22Speaker 3: he played twelve gamest with seven hundred and two yards
- 51:25Speaker 3: for three touchdowns. Twenty twenty three played fourteen games with
- 51:29Speaker 3: a little little under six hundred and then last year,
- 51:32Speaker 3: I mean he played ten games. He played ten games
- 51:35Speaker 3: last year, and he is grea when he's on the field.
- 51:39Speaker 3: This offense is at a different level. Yes, he is great.
- 51:42Speaker 3: We saw him in the playoffs phenomenal. However, he's one
- 51:48Speaker 3: of those guys that do go down. They traded I
- 51:52Speaker 3: think it was Harrison Brian they traded for a mention,
- 51:56Speaker 3: traded him. I think he was more of a bubble guy.
- 51:59Speaker 3: Great Alcatara, I've said it before. I trust Grant I do.
- 52:05Speaker 3: I think when he had to step up last year
- 52:06Speaker 3: he played he played pretty well. He played pretty well.
- 52:09Speaker 3: I mean, steems comfortable in that role. Obviously, you know
- 52:12Speaker 3: he's not your ideal tight end you want long term.
- 52:15Speaker 3: Could he be for sure? Who knows how he would
- 52:17Speaker 3: play as an everyday tight end one We haven't seen
- 52:20Speaker 3: that yet, so you can't write him off. But the
- 52:23Speaker 3: death is definitely not there. From what I've been seeing,
- 52:29Speaker 3: I could see possibly Johnny Wilson getting converted to a
- 52:33Speaker 3: tight end to keep a Nyah Smith Darius Cooper on
- 52:36Speaker 3: the roster as well. I mean, he's a tall what
- 52:38Speaker 3: is he one of the tallest receivers in football sixty
- 52:40Speaker 3: six sixty seven. He's a pretty big guy right he's bed.
- 52:46Speaker 3: I've been seeing when he's on the field not getting
- 52:48Speaker 3: targets pretty good in the wrong game with blocking. He's
- 52:51Speaker 3: just a big body. I'm just thinking outside the box.
- 52:54Speaker 3: He could be moved over there. But the depth is
- 52:57Speaker 3: definitely concerning, and I think that that's why they were
- 53:01Speaker 3: bringing in some guys this offseason. We were signing some
- 53:03Speaker 3: tight ends, we were moving some people around. You take
- 53:07Speaker 3: a look at the death right now, it's Dallas Goddard,
- 53:09Speaker 3: Grant Calcatara. Nick Gates is probably going to get cut.
- 53:14Speaker 3: He's just one of those training camp bodies, hasn't made
- 53:17Speaker 3: much of an impact. So then you're realistically you're stuck
- 53:20Speaker 3: with two true tight ends and it's just not enough.
- 53:25Speaker 3: I think Johnny Wilson could make the move, but I
- 53:27Speaker 3: also think that they need to be okay with Hey,
- 53:31Speaker 3: if God it goes down man, Grant's there, we don't
- 53:35Speaker 3: really have a true tight end three. So do I
- 53:38Speaker 3: think they make a move about it. No, But I
- 53:42Speaker 3: also think it could be something we see mid season.
- 53:45Speaker 3: You know, like I said, he's thirty years of age.
- 53:47Speaker 3: We're not going to resign him going in. They restructured
- 53:50Speaker 3: the deal, but they didn't extend it to a degree.
- 53:53Speaker 3: They gave him that option, but they didn't give him
- 53:56Speaker 3: the guaranteed extension. So we're gonna look at hey mid season.
- 53:59Speaker 3: Let's a value anyway. I think that could be a
- 54:01Speaker 3: good move. Last year of his contract, he could be
- 54:04Speaker 3: worth something. However, it's thin. Now do we see jail
- 54:09Speaker 3: and throw the tight end much here and there, but
- 54:12Speaker 3: you only see him throwing goddards on the field. So
- 54:14Speaker 3: I do think, God, it's a big key part of
- 54:16Speaker 3: this offense. I just like you were saying, I am
- 54:19Speaker 3: worried about the death. I don't know if there's enough.
- 54:22Speaker 3: I don't know if there's enough whether one goes down,
- 54:25Speaker 3: Goddard stays, you have to have some cushion. And I think,
- 54:29Speaker 3: besides the safety room, that is the thinnest part of
- 54:32Speaker 3: the depth chart.
- 54:33Speaker 1: Absolutely on offense. Yes, that absolutely is because I think
- 54:36Speaker 1: when you look at the history that you gave with
- 54:39Speaker 1: Dallas Goddard, I mean he's going to be missing time
- 54:41Speaker 1: this year. His body is at a certain point in
- 54:44Speaker 1: his career. We have seen this time and time again.
- 54:47Speaker 1: Only playing ten games last year, As you mentioned, he
- 54:50Speaker 1: is going to miss some time and that.
- 54:52Speaker 3: It's a physical position. It's one of the most physical
- 54:55Speaker 3: positions they do it.
- 54:56Speaker 1: All, So yeah, absolutely well, I mean it leads me
- 54:59Speaker 1: to to the running back position too, because if we
- 55:02Speaker 1: were to lose one Saquon Barkley too. The depth that
- 55:05Speaker 1: running back I think is also absolutely critical as this
- 55:09Speaker 1: is a run first team and we're going to be
- 55:11Speaker 1: seeing atmas Saquon Barkley again this season. Rightfully so based
- 55:15Speaker 1: on the season he had in twenty twenty four. But
- 55:18Speaker 1: I'm looking forward to seeing how the running back room,
- 55:21Speaker 1: specifically how will Shipley continues to develop and progresses. We've
- 55:26Speaker 1: seen that development and progression through this training camp for sure.
- 55:29Speaker 1: He appears to be the number two right behind Barkley,
- 55:31Speaker 1: and I do wonder if aj Dillon makes the team
- 55:35Speaker 1: become some sort of a contributor. So in terms of
- 55:38Speaker 1: the depth that running back does, what are your thoughts
- 55:42Speaker 1: on the depth and just how these players may contribute
- 55:45Speaker 1: on offense this coming season.
- 55:48Speaker 3: I personally think, and this might be a little bit
- 55:51Speaker 3: of a hot take, I think this is the defense
- 55:54Speaker 3: the room's been since the twenty seventeen season.
- 55:56Speaker 1: Okay, I really do.
- 55:57Speaker 3: I mean our twenty seventeen room, we have the Garrett Blue,
- 56:00Speaker 3: we had Jay Jaidi. You had the absolute wonder of
- 56:06Speaker 3: Corey Clement, the undrafted guy. That was one of the
- 56:09Speaker 3: best undrafted seasons I think I've seen in my short life.
- 56:13Speaker 3: So but you look at it now, you have Saquon
- 56:16Speaker 3: hands down the best running back in the league. No arguments,
- 56:19Speaker 3: you can't, there's no disputing it. But you have an
- 56:22Speaker 3: approven guy of aj Dillon. Sure he's battuted some injuries,
- 56:25Speaker 3: but when healthy he's good. Yeah, he has been a
- 56:28Speaker 3: good RB two when healthy. Will Stipley's a guy where
- 56:33Speaker 3: we've seen flashes here and there, very really quick and
- 56:35Speaker 3: fit through some good gaps, can burst speed if needs
- 56:39Speaker 3: to be. I think this is a good room. If
- 56:42Speaker 3: Saquon were to go down, which the running back, it's
- 56:44Speaker 3: a position, a lot of wear and tear in that position.
- 56:46Speaker 3: We've seen it over time. Christian McCaffrey, let's go to
- 56:49Speaker 3: his career. Yeah, he has every team he's been on
- 56:53Speaker 3: abused him every year, rightfully, so, but it catches up
- 56:57Speaker 3: to you. So but with the line we have, I
- 57:02Speaker 3: think that gives a little cushion to the depth. I
- 57:05Speaker 3: think if Saquon we're gonna to go down maybe the
- 57:09Speaker 3: production wouldn't be as high, but Shipley and Dylan could
- 57:12Speaker 3: still manufacture good play and good production because behind that line.
- 57:17Speaker 3: I'm not saying that line is the only reason our
- 57:20Speaker 3: running backs have been good, but look at the drop
- 57:22Speaker 3: off of DeAndre Swift's production from the year he was
- 57:25Speaker 3: with us to his year in Chicago. I mean, your
- 57:29Speaker 3: O line is gonna set up that run game. Saquon's
- 57:32Speaker 3: full potential was unlocked with us, right DeAndre Swift's full
- 57:36Speaker 3: potential was unlocked with US, as as Miles Sanders was.
- 57:40Speaker 3: So you go, look, now Saquon goes down, We're gonna
- 57:44Speaker 3: get to see these two full potential. And I think
- 57:46Speaker 3: every running back does have their full potential, but it's
- 57:49Speaker 3: all not the same. Swift's full potential and Saquon's were
- 57:51Speaker 3: not the same. So behind this O line, God willing
- 57:55Speaker 3: they stay healthy. I think the run game is going
- 57:59Speaker 3: to be fine. I think that depth is going to
- 58:02Speaker 3: be okay because Shipley he's shown us some runs even
- 58:05Speaker 3: last season that were impressive, like the one of the
- 58:07Speaker 3: NFC Championship game. I mean he almost took it fifty
- 58:10Speaker 3: yards of the house. So you get an O line
- 58:13Speaker 3: like that. I really don't think the depth is much
- 58:15Speaker 3: to worry about. I think Dylan's health is something to
- 58:17Speaker 3: worry about. Right If he were to battle injuries and
- 58:20Speaker 3: then Saquon goes down, then we have an issue. Because
- 58:23Speaker 3: Shipley cannot carry every game. You got to give your
- 58:25Speaker 3: running back to a chance to breathe. That's where I think
- 58:27Speaker 3: Kenneth Gainwell was a tough loss for us last year,
- 58:31Speaker 3: but understandably so he's going to go get a lot
- 58:33Speaker 3: more time in Pittsburgh. So as of right now, I
- 58:37Speaker 3: don't think there's much worry about the running back depth
- 58:41Speaker 3: because I think Saquon will get most of the carries
- 58:43Speaker 3: short yardage, maybe near the goal line. You plug Dylan
- 58:46Speaker 3: and they're bigger back. But I think for now this
- 58:49Speaker 3: depth is honestly one of the things I'm most comfortable with.
- 58:52Speaker 1: It looks great, well, I agree with you completely, and
- 58:56Speaker 1: I can't wait to see how these guys behind Barkley
- 58:59Speaker 1: are going to be able to contry in their own
- 59:01Speaker 1: way this season. Fingers crossed that Barkley stays healthy, of course,
- 59:05Speaker 1: But as we're moving along and finishing up our conversation
- 59:09Speaker 1: here at DOSE, I finally want to get into one
- 59:12Speaker 1: guy and that is the leader of this team. Jalen Hurts.
- 59:17Speaker 1: My gosh, I just we have all as Eagles fans
- 59:20Speaker 1: have come to love him, of course, for so many reasons,
- 59:23Speaker 1: mainly bringing another super Bowl, helping to bring another Super
- 59:26Speaker 1: Bowl to the city of Philadelphia. But the one thing
- 59:30Speaker 1: with him, and it never ceases to amaze me. There's
- 59:33Speaker 1: always seems to be drama, whether it's made up or
- 59:36Speaker 1: whether it's you know, legit, whether it comes to, you know,
- 59:40Speaker 1: the quarterback position. In Philadelphia, it seems like Philly sports
- 59:43Speaker 1: talk radio constantly needs to make some sort of issue
- 59:46Speaker 1: out of the quarterback position, even though your quarterback is
- 59:49Speaker 1: a Super Bowl winner and the Super Bowl MVP, for
- 59:52Speaker 1: God's sake, and he's gone to two super Bowls, one
- 59:55Speaker 1: one of them again the MVP last year's Super Bowl.
- 59:58Speaker 1: He continues to grow as a player. Yet whether it's
- 1:00:01Speaker 1: the national media some within the Philly sports talk world,
- 1:00:05Speaker 1: we see disrespect with regard to Jalen Hurts, and it does.
- 1:00:08Speaker 1: It bothers me quite frankly. And and and I I
- 1:00:13Speaker 1: can't seem to grasp why it's there, given what he
- 1:00:17Speaker 1: has done so far during his NFL career for the
- 1:00:20Speaker 1: Philadelphia Eagles and how again he continues to grow as
- 1:00:25Speaker 1: a player. Here, I mean, what are your thoughts on
- 1:00:28Speaker 1: the disrespect that that some folks out there give to
- 1:00:30Speaker 1: Jalen Hurts and you know what it what it means,
- 1:00:33Speaker 1: and what it doesn't mean. How one are your thoughts
- 1:00:35Speaker 1: here is we're closing things out.
- 1:00:38Speaker 3: I think when it comes to talking about Jalen Hurts,
- 1:00:41Speaker 3: a lot of people do not give him the credit
- 1:00:45Speaker 3: that's deserved because of I think there's a few factors.
- 1:00:48Speaker 3: I think you take a look at the team around him, yeah,
- 1:00:51Speaker 3: and they go, oh, he's got a J. Brown, Oh,
- 1:00:54Speaker 3: he's got DeVante Smith, Oh he's got this. But let's
- 1:00:57Speaker 3: let's let's backtrack in two twenty when he was a rookie.
- 1:01:03Speaker 3: He was you know, didn't play for the first thirteen
- 1:01:06Speaker 3: fourteen weeks, got the final four starts. His depth room
- 1:01:11Speaker 3: was Greg Ward.
- 1:01:12Speaker 1: It was horrendous.
- 1:01:13Speaker 3: It was al Sean Jeffrey. Yes, I love al Sean,
- 1:01:17Speaker 3: So it was it was I believe it was Dante No,
- 1:01:21Speaker 3: not Dante high Time, sorry, Jonathan Jonathan.
- 1:01:24Speaker 1: Yep.
- 1:01:24Speaker 3: It was Quez Watkins, a rookie, rookie, Quez Watkins, And
- 1:01:29Speaker 3: I think I saw a few jj ar Sega whiteside
- 1:01:33Speaker 3: appearances during those four games. We had a very bad room.
- 1:01:39Speaker 3: And yeah, he went one in three during those games.
- 1:01:41Speaker 3: In those four games, he threw for twelve hundred yards,
- 1:01:46Speaker 3: eight touchdowns and three picks.
- 1:01:48Speaker 2: Yeah, sure, you.
- 1:01:50Speaker 3: Went one in three in that four game spent. There
- 1:01:52Speaker 3: was something twenty twenty one. You know, you bring in
- 1:01:54Speaker 3: Devonte Smith, got her still battled some injuries, so you
- 1:01:57Speaker 3: had Smitty, Jalen Rager, and you had Ques Watkins. We
- 1:02:02Speaker 3: went nine to eight. It's a playoff there. People don't
- 1:02:07Speaker 3: want to acknowledge that he made the playoffs with that team.
- 1:02:10Speaker 3: But what you do is you build around your quarterbacks.
- 1:02:13Speaker 3: You build around it. That's what every smart organization does.
- 1:02:17Speaker 3: Look at what Washington's doing with Jay and Daniels, stacking
- 1:02:20Speaker 3: up the front, giving him a few playmakers. Guess what
- 1:02:23Speaker 3: will his play be elevated this year? I'd assume so,
- 1:02:26Speaker 3: but we don't know. We did the same with Jalen.
- 1:02:29Speaker 3: We got him guys that he's comfortable with. He is
- 1:02:32Speaker 3: super close with aj off the field. They brought him
- 1:02:35Speaker 3: in someone who's comfortable with. They got him, you know,
- 1:02:38Speaker 3: guys on the O line that would make the offense better,
- 1:02:43Speaker 3: that's what you do. So just because of the people
- 1:02:45Speaker 3: he has around him, you cannot take away from what
- 1:02:49Speaker 3: he's done.
- 1:02:49Speaker 1: Right.
- 1:02:50Speaker 3: And I think the push push is another thing. I
- 1:02:52Speaker 3: know people hate it. I get it. I get it.
- 1:02:55Speaker 3: They think they're you know, But I then throw this
- 1:02:58Speaker 3: point at him. If you had something that was a
- 1:03:00Speaker 3: guaranteed six points every time from the one, are you
- 1:03:04Speaker 3: not running it?
- 1:03:04Speaker 1: Exactly? Yep, exactly are you not running it?
- 1:03:08Speaker 3: And even if they've banned it, I think, I mean
- 1:03:10Speaker 3: that dude's legs, he's getting in on a normal sneak.
- 1:03:12Speaker 2: I just think.
- 1:03:13Speaker 3: So we've seen it, But I just think it's because
- 1:03:16Speaker 3: he's not your traditional quarterback in people's eyes, which is ridiculous,
- 1:03:22Speaker 3: and because we're run heavy. But look at the Super
- 1:03:25Speaker 3: Bowl keating on the run? What's sek one haf maybe
- 1:03:27Speaker 3: fifty yards maybe? Yeah, he's and he throws all over
- 1:03:31Speaker 3: the place. So I just think it's a because we're
- 1:03:34Speaker 3: Philadelphia Eagles fans and obviously we're we're not liked by
- 1:03:41Speaker 3: thirty one teams in the league. And I also think though,
- 1:03:44Speaker 3: it's because everything they say he can't do he does
- 1:03:49Speaker 3: the next game. Oh he can't throw. Guess what you know,
- 1:03:53Speaker 3: He'll throw for three hundred yards for three touchdowns in
- 1:03:55Speaker 3: the game, and then he'll go and say, hey, is
- 1:03:57Speaker 3: that what you want to see? Oh, he can only
- 1:03:59Speaker 3: rely on this guy. This guy goes down. Guess what
- 1:04:02Speaker 3: he beats you with this. It's I love the saying
- 1:04:05Speaker 3: everybody's better than Jalen Hurts until it's time to be
- 1:04:09Speaker 3: better than Jalen Hurts RaSE. And he continues to outplay
- 1:04:15Speaker 3: every elite quarterback he's faced, and people then say, we'll
- 1:04:19Speaker 3: look at his weapons, we'll look at their weapons. So
- 1:04:21Speaker 3: he outplayed Burrow, with Jamar and t Higgins, he all
- 1:04:24Speaker 3: played Mahomes, who was quote unquote the greatest of our era.
- 1:04:27Speaker 3: He outplayed Lamar Jackson, who is should be a three
- 1:04:31Speaker 3: time MVP. He's outplayed these guys. He's outplayed these guys,
- 1:04:34Speaker 3: So why doesn't he get his credit? But I enjoy
- 1:04:37Speaker 3: hearing oh he's not top five, he's not this because
- 1:04:40Speaker 3: I think if they did give him his flowers, I
- 1:04:43Speaker 3: think maybe it could play out a little differently. I
- 1:04:46Speaker 3: think the team feeds off that. I think he feeds
- 1:04:48Speaker 3: off of that. I know he sees it. We've seen
- 1:04:51Speaker 3: we've seen his responses to some of this. So I
- 1:04:54Speaker 3: think as long as he's that underdog and that okay,
- 1:04:56Speaker 3: you know he's not this, he's still gonna be that
- 1:04:59Speaker 3: guy in Philly, and whether you like it or not,
- 1:05:01Speaker 3: when it's all said and done in Philly, I think
- 1:05:03Speaker 3: will be QB one in Philly history.
- 1:05:05Speaker 1: Absolutely. I think you're absolutely right too. Boy, what a
