- 0:11Hello friends. It's Sean here.
- 0:14It's Tuesday. It's the 27th of January, which
- 0:18means yeah, yesterday was the day that many of us celebrated
- 0:22Australia Day. And I didn't even say that
- 0:23yesterday. Yes, it's it's a day that's kind
- 0:26of confusing because we love living in a country where we
- 0:31have peace and prosperity and stability, but at the same time,
- 0:36choosing that date is just the cause of so much controversy and
- 0:40hurt in some sections of our community.
- 0:42So we are unsure at the Connery household exactly how to
- 0:46approach that day. But we are grateful for what we
- 0:49have in our part of the world. And we are also grateful for a
- 0:53day. But we didn't have to go to
- 0:54work. But oh, it's back to work.
- 0:55I have not been back to work since well before Christmas, so
- 0:59boy, I'm going to have to put on some respectable looking
- 1:03clothing and shave and go to work.
- 1:07Wish me luck. I can do it and we can do it.
- 1:11And before we do that, before we have to worry about any of the
- 1:14different parts of the day, let us come before our God and hear
- 1:19His words as Jesus in Jerusalem. Is sharing more parables, more
- 1:25teaching, more challenging, and more predicting of the future?
- 1:31As we read together Luke chapter 20, one day as Jesus was
- 1:45teaching the people and preaching the good news in the
- 1:47temple, the leading priests, the teachers of religious law, and
- 1:51the elders came up to him. They demanded, By what authority
- 1:55are you doing all these things? Who gave you the right?
- 1:59Let me ask you a question first, he replied.
- 2:03Did John's authority to baptise come from heaven, or was it
- 2:06merely human? They talked it over among
- 2:09themselves. If we say it was from heaven, he
- 2:12will ask us why we didn't believe John.
- 2:15But if we say it was merely human, the people will stone us
- 2:19because they are convinced John was a prophet.
- 2:22So they finally reported that they didn't know, and Jesus
- 2:26responded. Then I won't tell you by what
- 2:29authority I do these things. Now Jesus turned to the people
- 2:34again and told them this story. A man planted a vineyard, leased
- 2:39it to tenant farmers, and moved to another country to live for
- 2:42several years. At the time of the grape
- 2:45harvest, he sent one of his servants to collect his share of
- 2:48the crop. But the farmers attacked the
- 2:50servant, beat him up, and sent him back empty handed.
- 2:54So the owner sent another servant, but they also insulted
- 2:57him, beat him up and sent him away empty handed.
- 3:01A third man was sent and they wounded him and chased him away.
- 3:05What will I do? The owner asked himself.
- 3:08I know I'll send my cherished son, surely they will respect
- 3:13him. But when the tenant farmers saw
- 3:16his son, they said to each other, Here comes the heir to
- 3:19this estate, let's kill him and get the estate for ourselves.
- 3:23So they dragged him out of the vineyard and murdered him.
- 3:27What do you suppose the owner of the vineyard will do to them?
- 3:30Jesus asked. I'll tell you, He will come and
- 3:33kill those farmers and leave the vineyard to others.
- 3:37How terrible that such a thing should ever happen, His
- 3:40listeners protested. Jesus looked at them and said,
- 3:44Then what does this scripture mean?
- 3:46The stone that the builders rejected has now become the
- 3:49cornerstone. Everyone who stumbles over that
- 3:53stone will be broken into pieces and it will crush anyone it
- 3:57falls on. The teachers of religious law
- 3:59and the leading priests wanted to arrest Jesus immediately
- 4:03because they realised he was telling the story against them.
- 4:06They were the wicked farmers, but they were afraid of the
- 4:09people's reaction. Watching for their opportunity,
- 4:13the teachers sent spies pretending to be honest men.
- 4:17They tried to get Jesus to say something that could be reported
- 4:19to the Roman governor so he would arrest Jesus.
- 4:23Teacher, they said we know that you speak truth and teach what
- 4:27is right and are not influenced by what others think.
- 4:31You teach the way of God truthfully.
- 4:33Now tell us, is it right for us to pay taxes to Caesar or not?
- 4:38He saw through their trickery and said, Show me your Roman
- 4:42coin whose picture and title are stamped on it, Caesars, they
- 4:48replied. Well then he said, give to
- 4:51Caesar what belongs to Caesar, and give to God what belongs to
- 4:55God. So they failed to trap him by
- 4:58what he said in front of the people.
- 5:00Instead, they were amazed by his answer and they remained silent.
- 5:07Then Jesus was approached by some Sadducees, religious
- 5:11teachers who say there is no resurrection from the dead.
- 5:14They posed this question. Teacher Moses gave us a law that
- 5:18if a man dies leaving a wife but no children, his brother should
- 5:23marry the widow and have a child who will carry on the brother's
- 5:26name. Well, suppose there were seven
- 5:28brothers. The oldest 1 married and then
- 5:30died without children. So the second brother married
- 5:33the widow, but he also died. Then the third brother married
- 5:37her. This continued with all seven of
- 5:39them who died without children. Finally, the woman also died.
- 5:44So tell us, whose wife will she be in the resurrection?
- 5:48For all seven were married to her.
- 5:51Jesus replied. Marriage is for people here on
- 5:54earth. But in the age to come, those
- 5:57worthy of being raised from the dead will neither marry nor be
- 6:00given in marriage, and they will never die again.
- 6:04In this respect they will be like angels.
- 6:07They are children of God and children of the resurrection.
- 6:11But now as to whether the dead will be raised.
- 6:14Even Moses proved this when he wrote about the burning Bush
- 6:18long after Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob died.
- 6:21He referred to the Lord as the God of Abraham, the God of
- 6:25Isaac, and the God of Jacob. So he is the God of the living,
- 6:29not the dead, for they are all alive to him.
- 6:34Well, said Teacher, remarked some of the teachers of
- 6:37religious law who were standing there, and then no one dared to
- 6:42ask him any more questions. Then Jesus presented them with a
- 6:46question. Why is it, he asked, that the
- 6:49Messiah is said to be the son of David?
- 6:52For David himself wrote in the book of Psalms.
- 6:55The Lord said to my Lord, sit at the place of honour, at my right
- 6:59hand, until I humble your enemies, making them a footstool
- 7:03under your feet. Since David called the Messiah
- 7:07Lord, how can the Messiah be his son?
- 7:12Then with the crowds listening, he turned to his disciples and
- 7:15said, Beware of these teachers of religious law, for they like
- 7:20to parade around in flowing robes and love to receive
- 7:24respectful greetings as they walk in the marketplace.
- 7:27And how they love the seats of honour in the synagogues and the
- 7:31head table at banquets. Yet they shamelessly cheat
- 7:34widows out of their property and then pretend to be pious by
- 7:38making long prayers in public. Because of this, they will be
- 7:43severely punished. O Lord, you are wise beyond our
- 7:56comprehension. And as we read these stories of
- 7:59you responding to these challenging questions, ah, we
- 8:03think, boy, Jesus was so wise. I wish I had that sort of
- 8:08wisdom. But let us not forget Jesus,
- 8:11that as you walk the earth within you was the wisdom of all
- 8:16time stretching out from the beginning of creation because
- 8:20you were there. Yes, even though you are in
- 8:24human form, you are still the Almighty God of the universe.
- 8:31So we just worship you and we humbly just magnify your
- 8:36glorious name. I may your kindness and
- 8:40prescience and brotherly love to us never confuse us that we
- 8:46would diminish the awesome power and magnificence of you, our
- 8:52Almighty Creator God and our close loving Saviour.
- 8:59We just fall on our faces and we worship you with all that we
- 9:03are. And we pray this in your
- 9:06glorious name, Jesus, Amen.
