- 0:39SPEAKER_03: Welcome in, everybody, to the Talk and Tech Podcast.
- 0:42SPEAKER_03: My name is Steven Rodriguez, my co-host Tristan McGonagall, and Tristan, football season has come to an end.
- 0:49SPEAKER_02: Sweet, sweet relief has come upon Raiderlands.
- 0:54SPEAKER_02: That great feeling of when football can hurt you no longer and basketball can only take you to great heights that only a Texas tea otherwise could.
- 1:03SPEAKER_02: That was beautiful.
- 1:05SPEAKER_03: Thank you.
- 1:06SPEAKER_03: Except for a part of that.
- 1:10SPEAKER_03: That's lowest of lows.
- 1:11SPEAKER_03: That's not highs.
- 1:12SPEAKER_02: No, it's the it's the hangover because after the basketball season is amazing, it ends in an amazing way.
- 1:17SPEAKER_02: You're hungover from it.
- 1:18SPEAKER_02: Like, damn.
- 1:18SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 1:19SPEAKER_02: What am I gonna do with my life?
- 1:20SPEAKER_02: This is the one that I live for, you know.
- 1:22SPEAKER_02: That's that's a nice metaphor.
- 1:24SPEAKER_03: Yeah, sure.
- 1:25SPEAKER_02: Was that a metaphor or simile?
- 1:26SPEAKER_03: Simile uses like an as, I think.
- 1:29SPEAKER_02: Didn't I say like a hangover?
- 1:30SPEAKER_02: So did you?
- 1:31SPEAKER_02: Okay, journalism is cool, kid.
- 1:34SPEAKER_03: I dude, they don't teach you that stuff.
- 1:36SPEAKER_03: I'm sorry.
- 1:37SPEAKER_03: It's you know, I don't know how to read or write still.
- 1:40SPEAKER_03: All right, enough small talk.
- 1:43SPEAKER_03: Enough small talk.
- 1:45SPEAKER_03: We are back.
- 1:46SPEAKER_03: We are talking uh a season recap of Texas Tech football.
- 1:51SPEAKER_03: We're also gonna give you some basketball stuff, but we want to start it off first.
- 1:54SPEAKER_03: We always find a reason to talk about our Lord and Savior, Patrick Mahomes.
- 1:59SPEAKER_03: He he wins, uh, I don't know if he wins, he was named the Sports Illustrated Sports Person of the Year.
- 2:07SPEAKER_03: This is a reflection of the university.
- 2:09SPEAKER_03: It's a great thing for obviously for him, for the school, for you and me, for everybody that is that is associated with Texas Tech.
- 2:19SPEAKER_03: Patrick Mahomes continues to be one of the best alumni that we have.
- 2:25SPEAKER_02: Absolutely.
- 2:25SPEAKER_02: You know, he's got the he's got a great head on his shoulder, he's just a decent guy, and he seems to he's become the face of the NFL, he's become the face of Kansas City, he's become the you know, uh probably the most famous face of Texas Tech, even.
- 2:39SPEAKER_02: And you know, I just couldn't be more proud to call him a fellow Red Raider.
- 2:42SPEAKER_02: And I just hope he continues down this path of being a good, decent member of society and just uh lifts everybody up where he can and continues to be a badass football player.
- 2:52SPEAKER_03: What more can he even do?
- 2:54SPEAKER_03: You know, like he's got he's got it all right now.
- 2:57SPEAKER_02: He can escape every tackle and be perfect in every way.
- 3:00SPEAKER_02: That's just his thing.
- 3:01SPEAKER_03: He can make every throw, he can throw to Tyreek Hill uh for 200 receiving yards in the first quarter to completely destroy my fantasy team.
- 3:10SPEAKER_03: He is the pinnacle of Texas Tech.
- 3:13SPEAKER_03: Uh, but yeah, congrats to Patrick Mahomes.
- 3:15SPEAKER_03: This is obviously a great honor.
- 3:17SPEAKER_03: Uh in any case.
- 3:18SPEAKER_03: Uh, and he's he rocks, man.
- 3:20SPEAKER_03: He rocks.
- 3:20SPEAKER_02: What doesn't he have?
- 3:21SPEAKER_03: He's got it all.
- 3:22SPEAKER_03: Have it all.
- 3:24SPEAKER_03: Have it all, Patty.
- 3:25SPEAKER_03: Um, and then okay, but let's get into some basketball before we go into the football recap.
- 3:29SPEAKER_03: Basketball, of course, winning these last two games, one against Troy, who awesome for them to replace the St.
- 3:36SPEAKER_03: John's game last minute.
- 3:38SPEAKER_03: Uh, you know, awesome of them to come to Lubbock and play that game.
- 3:41SPEAKER_03: We ended up uh killing them pretty badly.
- 3:43SPEAKER_03: I think we won by 34 or something like that.
- 3:45SPEAKER_03: And then um we also played who did we just beat?
- 3:48SPEAKER_03: Grambling State.
- 3:49SPEAKER_03: Grambling State.
- 3:50SPEAKER_03: We ended up winning by I think 41 or 39 or something like that.
- 3:55SPEAKER_03: Uh just a couple cupcakes that we destroyed.
- 3:59SPEAKER_03: Um, yeah, Grambling's not even a state.
- 4:02SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I'm always confused about the colleges that are like Grambling State or what you know, what whatever's not a state.
- 4:09SPEAKER_03: 51st state Grambling.
- 4:12SPEAKER_03: Where are they in?
- 4:12SPEAKER_03: Are they in Louisiana?
- 4:14SPEAKER_03: Yep.
- 4:14SPEAKER_03: Louisiana.
- 4:16SPEAKER_02: Sorry, Wax School, I believe.
- 4:17SPEAKER_03: Oh, okay.
- 4:18SPEAKER_03: Well, right on.
- 4:19SPEAKER_03: Um, but we ended up beating them pretty badly.
- 4:21SPEAKER_03: Uh again, it's hard to judge this basketball team yet.
- 4:25SPEAKER_03: Uh, obviously, with the you know, tough loss to Houston, but we played so badly that I I I still think we're better than Houston um from an from an eye test standpoint, but we just played about as bad as we could in that first half.
- 4:38SPEAKER_03: Uh, and then we've gone and beat four you know real cupcakes.
- 4:41SPEAKER_03: So it's it's hard to judge this team.
- 4:43SPEAKER_03: It's it stinks that we don't have a stronger out-of-conference slate like some other teams, especially in the Big 12.
- 4:49SPEAKER_03: You see Texas and you see Baylor, West Virginia getting these, you know, tough, real tough opponents, uh, two or three to to begin the year and really get their team ready for conference play.
- 4:59SPEAKER_03: And we're kind of sitting here playing these, you know, destroying these teams by 30, 40 points.
- 5:03SPEAKER_03: So um, and we have two more coming up.
- 5:06SPEAKER_03: Uh Abilene Christian, we have uh coming up tomorrow, which is Wednesday, and then we have AM Corpus Christi on Saturday, two teams which we should uh beat pretty badly.
- 5:16SPEAKER_03: I will say though, Abilene Christian is probably the toughest of the cupcakes that we're gonna play.
- 5:22SPEAKER_03: They're five and oh coming in, and uh they usually have a pretty solid basketball program.
- 5:27SPEAKER_02: You know, if if if we're gonna complain about this amazing team and sound like the spoiled brats, we are.
- 5:33SPEAKER_02: Um the problem with Houston has kind of been repeating these past couple games.
- 5:37SPEAKER_02: We've been slow offensively in the first half.
- 5:39SPEAKER_02: It seems like there's still some meshing issues that need to we need to overcome offensively.
- 5:43SPEAKER_02: But this this defense is 100% beard ball.
- 5:46SPEAKER_02: Um, there's we're we're number one in K and Ken Palm, and it teams are having a hard time scoring on us, and uh, you can't complain about that.
- 5:55SPEAKER_02: I just hope we really pick it up and uh start putting it on them.
- 5:58SPEAKER_02: So, but it'll come.
- 6:00SPEAKER_02: I'm just it's just if you could if you could find one thing to complain about, that's what it is.
- 6:04SPEAKER_03: Yeah, no doubt.
- 6:05SPEAKER_03: We started off slow.
- 6:07SPEAKER_03: Uh, we need to get it together a little bit on the um offensive end of the floor.
- 6:11SPEAKER_03: It seems like we're a little too passive at times, uh, you know, and and some of our guys just you know haven't meshed as as was we'd like to see so far.
- 6:19SPEAKER_03: Again, it's only the beginning of the season, so uh that'll change as it goes on.
- 6:23SPEAKER_03: Um, but I I think the last couple of games, especially a bright spot has been namari Burnett.
- 6:28SPEAKER_03: He's really shown up and shown that he uh he's really showing some of his potential that he can be.
- 6:34SPEAKER_03: Had six steals in that Grambling State game, 12 points off the bench.
- 6:38SPEAKER_03: Uh, if he gets to you know full capacity, we're gonna be a really tough team.
- 6:43SPEAKER_03: He could potentially break his way into the starting lineup.
- 6:45SPEAKER_03: He could uh just be another guy off the bench that that you know plays against their reserves and and kills it.
- 6:51SPEAKER_03: So um uh I we should mention that Terrence Shannon Jr.
- 6:55SPEAKER_03: was uh injured in the Grambling State game.
- 6:59SPEAKER_03: Uh I believe it looked like an ankle injury.
- 7:01SPEAKER_03: Looks like he should be back for the uh well, he's a game time decision for ACU.
- 7:06SPEAKER_03: So that's the best news.
- 7:07SPEAKER_03: Honestly, when you saw him coming off the floor, he was he was being helped off, couldn't really put a lot of weight on it.
- 7:12SPEAKER_03: So that's good news all in all.
- 7:14SPEAKER_03: Uh Kevin McCullough still hasn't played a game yet.
- 7:16SPEAKER_03: He's still recovering from a twisted ankle.
- 7:18SPEAKER_03: I think it was a high ankle sprain, something like that.
- 7:20SPEAKER_03: Um, but uh, you know, hopefully he gets in before Big 12 slate starts.
- 7:25SPEAKER_03: But uh, you know, just another another couple blowouts for Texas Tech basketball.
- 7:29SPEAKER_03: Let's keep it rolling.
- 7:31SPEAKER_02: Yeah, let's let's smoke them.
- 7:33SPEAKER_02: Let's let's adjust our offensive issues.
- 7:35SPEAKER_02: And especially when we play the Aggies.
- 7:38SPEAKER_02: I mean, I guess they're not necessarily the Aggies, but it's AM.
- 7:40SPEAKER_02: So just treat them like they are and uh let's uh you know take care of business and move forward to the Big 12 Gauntlet.
- 7:45SPEAKER_03: Are AM Corpus are they their mascots not the Aggies, are they?
- 7:48SPEAKER_02: No, I think it's the Islanders.
- 7:50SPEAKER_03: Oh, there you go.
- 7:50SPEAKER_03: That's a good mascot.
- 7:51SPEAKER_03: Yeah, Corpus Christie.
- 7:52SPEAKER_03: Right on.
- 7:53SPEAKER_02: They are on Island.
- 7:54SPEAKER_03: That's cool.
- 7:54SPEAKER_03: Oh, there you go.
- 7:56SPEAKER_03: Some some geographical information uh from Tristan today.
- 8:00SPEAKER_03: We should mention uh last week we recorded before the news came out, but uh Joel Intabway has left the Texas Tech program.
- 8:07SPEAKER_03: Uh obviously a depth piece that uh is now gone from the team, but not something that's a real issue, to be honest, uh, for Texas Tech.
- 8:15SPEAKER_03: Um, he cited the his his reasoning as uh you know family concerns and family issues.
- 8:20SPEAKER_03: So we wish him the best of luck with everything as Chris Beard did.
- 8:24SPEAKER_03: So um I not a major depth piece, uh, really.
- 8:27SPEAKER_03: He he logged a few minutes in the first three games of the year.
- 8:30SPEAKER_03: So um he's just another, you know, kind of big guy that that I would have liked to have on the team, uh, and a and a guy that's that's played college basketball before.
- 8:38SPEAKER_03: So that's always good.
- 8:39SPEAKER_03: Uh, but you know, wish him the best of luck.
- 8:42SPEAKER_02: For sure.
- 8:43SPEAKER_02: I mean, you you're if you're lucky enough to make it to college out of high school, uh like playing ball, you know, you only get to do it once because the all the odds are heavily against you doing it beyond college.
- 8:53SPEAKER_02: So go and make the most of it wherever you can, be happy, have fun.
- 8:56SPEAKER_02: Because I mean, that's you only get one shot at this.
- 8:59SPEAKER_02: So, no, no, no hard feelings there.
- 9:01SPEAKER_02: And because I mean, if you if you can't mesh into the beard system, then it's just it's not gonna work because he is a huge culture guy, and if you can't fit into the culture, it's just not gonna work.
- 9:11SPEAKER_03: And that's the thing that you have to balance with college basketball, man.
- 9:14SPEAKER_03: It's like it you have to find the right system that fits for you and that's also winning, like it's tough to do that.
- 9:21SPEAKER_03: And Beard has managed to find a way to do that.
- 9:23SPEAKER_03: But if he but if he has guys that are within the program that aren't willing to, you know uh fit the system, then you know, better to get them out than to keep them in and have a liability on your team.
- 9:32SPEAKER_03: So uh, you know, good luck to Joel moving forward.
- 9:35SPEAKER_03: But I I really don't think it's gonna be an issue for for basketball moving forward, but uh, you know what will be an issue is the football program.
- 9:45SPEAKER_03: And let's go into it, our season recap of the Texas Tech 2020 football season.
- 9:52SPEAKER_03: Uh, tough one, I to say the least.
- 9:55SPEAKER_02: Yeah, well, we we I guess we better talk about this Kansas game as much as I really do not want to.
- 10:01SPEAKER_02: Um, my goodness, I really I not only did I expect us to blow out Kansas, I Vegas thought we were gonna blow out the uh Kansas.
- 10:11SPEAKER_02: They favored us by like 27 points, and we beat them by three.
- 10:15SPEAKER_02: We we it comes down to the wire and a field goal, and it's it's just utterly pathetic.
- 10:20SPEAKER_02: And I don't want to rag on our boys too hard, but that was Kansas got crushed by everyone they played.
- 10:30SPEAKER_02: No one was close, but we somehow take him to the wire and at home in the season finale, and it just was utterly pathetic and incredibly difficult to watch.
- 10:42SPEAKER_03: Yeah, it was it was the most Texas Tech way to end the football season, I think.
- 10:46SPEAKER_03: Uh, pulling out a close win to an O and eight Kansas team.
- 10:50SPEAKER_03: Uh, then really we we could have lost.
- 10:53SPEAKER_03: And I I guess when you're talking about the team as a whole, Tristan, what what's the first thing that comes to your mind when you're talking about the 2020 Red Raiders?
- 11:01SPEAKER_02: I'm disappointed and exhausted.
- 11:03SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it's just we have good players, like we it's it's talent isn't necessarily an issue right now, and it's just it seems like a whole lot of bone-headed coaching decisions and schemes really held this team back.
- 11:21SPEAKER_02: That I I just think the potential was there for a decent season, and I really think we just shot ourselves in the foot because I don't think everybody, I don't think we stepped onto field onto the field with teams that were just better than us talent-wise.
- 11:33SPEAKER_02: I think it was just we play everybody we play has a better coaching staff.
- 11:37SPEAKER_02: That's really how it feels.
- 11:38SPEAKER_02: And I mean, I don't want to.
- 11:40SPEAKER_02: I I mean, I guess it's fair, he's getting paid millions.
- 11:43SPEAKER_02: Matt Wells is getting paid millions, and this is the best we get, and it's it's year two.
- 11:47SPEAKER_02: You're supposed to improve, and it feels like we regressed.
- 11:50SPEAKER_02: Uh, and I know we lost to Kansas last year, and we won four games last year and won four games this year in a shorter season, but man, I think we're just really lucky that we played a lot of bad teams because the only team we beat that was better than us was West Virginia.
- 12:04SPEAKER_03: Yeah, and those four wins were all tight.
- 12:06SPEAKER_03: I mean, down to the wire.
- 12:08SPEAKER_03: Uh, and we're talking Houston Baptist and we're talking Kansas were within two and three points, respectively.
- 12:14SPEAKER_03: So uh a terrible Baylor team.
- 12:17SPEAKER_03: We only won by one, and uh yeah, and West Virginia, you know, we we did end up pulling that.
- 12:23SPEAKER_03: That was probably our best game of the year, uh, all things considered.
- 12:25SPEAKER_03: Maybe you could argue UT, I guess, but we still blew it.
- 12:28SPEAKER_03: But uh just yeah, disappointment is is the word to describe this football team.
- 12:34SPEAKER_02: Yeah, you bring up that UT game.
- 12:35SPEAKER_02: I I I don't think I've been as heartbroken after a game than that UT game in a long time because we we we found every way to lose that game, not to cut you off, but it's just like that one really was a heartbreaker.
- 12:46SPEAKER_03: That's the thing.
- 12:47SPEAKER_03: I I wonder how this team would have progressed if we were to have won that game because that would have been such a huge win for the game.
- 12:54SPEAKER_03: Like we should have.
- 12:55SPEAKER_03: Like I know, I know we blew it so hard.
- 12:58SPEAKER_03: I don't, I don't know.
- 12:59SPEAKER_03: It's so sad.
- 13:00SPEAKER_03: Um, I will never re-watch that game ever again.
- 13:03SPEAKER_03: It was awful.
- 13:04SPEAKER_03: I I was in my room in darkness for two hours after.
- 13:07SPEAKER_03: I want to hurt more than the Sooner game.
- 13:09SPEAKER_03: The Sooner game sucked to watch.
- 13:10SPEAKER_03: Well, the shoot the Sooner game was just like a just a beatdown early on.
- 13:14SPEAKER_03: You were kind of out of it early on.
- 13:16SPEAKER_03: The UT, you know you know, we had it, and you know, losing a game like that is just awful, but especially to your biggest rival, so it really hurt.
- 13:24SPEAKER_03: Yeah, and so I I would agree with you that coaching was the main just downer of this season.
- 13:31SPEAKER_03: Everything was bad from the scheme to the to the execution to the game plan to everything in a lot of these games, and and that was the issue.
- 13:38SPEAKER_03: A lot of games that we could have won, but we didn't because uh we uh either decided to do a stupid play, like you know, onside kick when you're up and your defense is rolling and they return it and go back and take the lead, like at Oklahoma State, and uh just just tough, just tough trying to kick in a field goal on second down when you need a touchdown and a and a field goal to tie the game.
- 14:04SPEAKER_03: Uh, I I forgot, was that against TCU?
- 14:06SPEAKER_03: I think it was against TCU.
- 14:08SPEAKER_03: Um, awful, awful from all in UT.
- 14:13SPEAKER_02: If we've made field goals in UT, it would have been a win.
- 14:16SPEAKER_03: So I I want to see some change from this coaching staff.
- 14:20SPEAKER_03: I uh you and me both agree that Matt Wells is probably not gonna get fired after this year.
- 14:24SPEAKER_03: It's his second year of a five or six year deal.
- 14:26SPEAKER_03: I I you know I can't really remember, but that's tough to buy out that contract already.
- 14:31SPEAKER_03: Um, I know a lot of people want to do it, and I'm I'm there with you as well, but it's it's just a financial strain, especially when we've just had to buy out Cliff Kingsbury's contract, and then we have to think about paying the new coach.
- 14:45SPEAKER_03: So uh, you know, I uh there's rumors that the donors are on the side of buying him out or whatever, and we haven't heard much from Matt Wells or Kirby Hoke in these last few days since the Kansas game.
- 14:55SPEAKER_03: So we'll see what happens as it progresses.
- 14:57SPEAKER_03: But you and me both kind of believe that Matt Wells is going to still be here for next season.
- 15:02SPEAKER_03: Uh, so we may as well accept it and just, you know, roll with it moving forward and have some positivity.
- 15:07SPEAKER_03: But uh one of the guys when we're talking about the coordinators, Patterson uh was a bright spot this year because the defense, I think, actually was a little better than last season and actually had some shining spots and and shining moments, especially with that linebacking core, guys like Zach McPherson who who showed up and had a great season uh overall, some of the defensive line guys who were young and and still you know took on a bigger role and they and they did well.
- 15:32SPEAKER_03: So uh, but when we're talking about guys like David Yost and we're talking about guys like Mike Tomerdal, the special teams coordinator, uh some of those guys have to go, yeah.
- 15:41SPEAKER_02: No, it with 100.
- 15:43SPEAKER_02: I think Keith Patterson has earned his right to stay on the staff because without I I believe this defense with Patrick Mahomes offense, we win 10 games.
- 15:52SPEAKER_02: We're talking about going to the Big 12 championship, in my opinion.
- 15:55SPEAKER_02: We're talking about Patrick Mahomes winning the Heisman um with this defense.
- 15:58SPEAKER_02: So it's I think I I know there's tons of people that think the whole staff just get wiped, they even think that uh Keith Patterson is no good.
- 16:05SPEAKER_02: And you know I understand if you look at the stats, you know, obviously we're still low, but this defense was serviceable.
- 16:10SPEAKER_02: We held some teams, you know.
- 16:12SPEAKER_02: We really did outside the OU game.
- 16:14SPEAKER_02: We didn't get blown out, you know.
- 16:15SPEAKER_02: You just every game was tight, and our defense really our defense never gave up.
- 16:19SPEAKER_02: But some really weird stuff happened this season, like stuff we're never bad at.
- 16:24SPEAKER_02: Quarterback play was really disappointing.
- 16:27SPEAKER_02: Um, the offensive schemes in general were really uh underwhelming and just couldn't score, which is bizarre at Texas Tech.
- 16:35SPEAKER_02: And special teams lost us games, like the UT game, and and uh like you're talking about some other ones.
- 16:40SPEAKER_02: And I I truly think that it's time to move on for both those coaches because I think Matt Wells needs a multi mulligan anyway.
- 16:46SPEAKER_02: Because if we're gonna if there's any hope for him to be the guy, and I don't think anyone in this fan base thinks he is right now for a good reason.
- 16:53SPEAKER_02: Um, you're gonna have to make those changes.
- 16:55SPEAKER_02: It's gonna have to happen.
- 16:56SPEAKER_02: I understand they're your guys, I understand they've been they've been with you for a while, but this is big boy ball where and I understand that that's the funny thing.
- 17:03SPEAKER_02: Yost was at Missouri, Yost played and Yost was a good offensive coordinator at Utah State.
- 17:08SPEAKER_02: People are saying that he was the gym on the staff, but he has been the Achilles heel.
- 17:13SPEAKER_03: Absolutely, for sure.
- 17:15SPEAKER_03: Uh, and I think I I saw this tweet a little bit ago from uh our guy BJ Simons.
- 17:20SPEAKER_03: Is it Simmons or Simons?
- 17:21SPEAKER_03: Simmons.
- 17:22SPEAKER_03: Simmons, yeah.
- 17:23SPEAKER_03: Uh, you know, he's he's obviously got a huge Twitter presence, but uh he was talking about the program, the state of the program, and how it's worse to have people be numb to the losses than for people to be upset about them.
- 17:36SPEAKER_03: And I think, especially with that Kansas game, I was getting a little numb.
- 17:39SPEAKER_03: I was like, you know, I I can I can understand you weren't the same case, but for me, I was like, Yeah, I I you know, the way this season's gone, I can see us freaking losing to ONA Kansas.
- 17:50SPEAKER_03: I really could, and I'm not upset about it.
- 17:52SPEAKER_02: He said fan apathy was the worst thing that happened to a program, which is it is which is what you're talking about.
- 17:56SPEAKER_03: It is because that leads to years of mediocrity.
- 17:59SPEAKER_03: I mean, and and we don't want mediocrity, or worse, it's been worse.
- 18:02SPEAKER_02: We had not been mediocre.
- 18:04SPEAKER_03: No, no, no, no, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 18:06SPEAKER_03: But like you know what I'm trying to say, it's just it's it's one of the we're at a bad state of this program right now, and something needs to change.
- 18:13SPEAKER_03: Uh, and step one of a of a coach on the hot seat is firing a coordinator and getting somebody new in there, trying to get a different scheme going.
- 18:20SPEAKER_03: So um, I would be surprised if David Yost is still on the staff.
- 18:23SPEAKER_03: I think uh the entire Red Raider fan base would be pretty upset if he was still on the staff next season.
- 18:30SPEAKER_03: Uh, and and we'll see it moving forward.
- 18:32SPEAKER_03: But uh, you know, Tristan, I did I did want to talk to you about potential candidates.
- 18:37SPEAKER_03: Uh, I know Matt Wells isn't fired yet, and I know this may be premature because you know he may end up being something, but uh right now it's fun just to talk about this kind of stuff.
- 18:47SPEAKER_03: Who in your mind, and I I know we have the same list here, but who do you think would be a good candidate to replace Matt Wells?
- 18:55SPEAKER_02: Do you want my favorite or do you want my list?
- 18:57SPEAKER_03: Just go ahead and name them.
- 18:58SPEAKER_03: We have the same four, so go ahead and name them.
- 19:01SPEAKER_02: All right, so number one, Anthony Lynn, head coach of the NFL team, the Los Angeles Chargers.
- 19:07SPEAKER_02: Number two is Brent Venables, defensive coordinator of Powerhouse Clemson.
- 19:13SPEAKER_02: Number three is Graham Harrell, offensive coordinator of the USC Trojans, and number four is Sonny Dykes, head coach of the SMU ponies and legacy coach.
- 19:25SPEAKER_02: Okay, so we have which are Red Raider alum.
- 19:28SPEAKER_03: There you go.
- 19:29SPEAKER_03: So let's break down those four because we we have them in order there, too.
- 19:32SPEAKER_03: The the ordered the list that you named, we have them in uh, you know, who we would want most to who we would, I guess, want least.
- 19:39SPEAKER_03: I'd be excited about any of these four, to be honest with you.
- 19:42SPEAKER_03: They're all kind of exciting hires, uh, especially when we're talking about how Matt Wells and you and me were discussing this at length after the Kansas game because we were in full on fire, everybody blow it up mode.
- 19:53SPEAKER_03: And so um passion took over.
- 19:57SPEAKER_03: Yeah, passion took over for sure.
- 19:58SPEAKER_03: They were high.
- 20:00SPEAKER_03: But uh when we when we hired Cliff Kingsbury, it was an exciting hire.
- 20:04SPEAKER_03: It was something that brought the fan base kind of together and really was fun for that first for the first couple years, even you know, even it was always fun with Cliff.
- 20:13SPEAKER_03: It just wasn't I I won't say always fun, but uh we at least had you know something to look forward to in terms of offense and someone to stand behind.
- 20:23SPEAKER_03: Yeah, yeah.
- 20:23SPEAKER_03: He's an alumni.
- 20:24SPEAKER_03: We still love him.
- 20:26SPEAKER_03: We want him to succeed.
- 20:27SPEAKER_03: People don't want Matt Wells to succeed, and there have been those, and I would consider them bad fans that never wanted Matt Wells to succeed with this team, and that's a you know, that's a bad, that's a bad look.
- 20:37SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it's no one felt that way with Cliff.
- 20:39SPEAKER_03: Yeah, just to be right about about it, to to look at Matt Wells and you know, crap on everything he's done and and everything.
- 20:46SPEAKER_03: There were guys from day one like that, and that's not the way to look at things.
- 20:49SPEAKER_03: Uh, after after we've seen these two years, sure, I get it now, but you always want to stand behind the guy who's gonna represent the university and the and the team.
- 20:58SPEAKER_03: But uh and when we did hire Matt Wells, it wasn't exciting though.
- 21:01SPEAKER_03: I'll give I'll give him that.
- 21:03SPEAKER_03: He wasn't an exciting hire, he was a guy that not really uh not a lot of people knew a lot about.
- 21:07SPEAKER_03: We just kind of trusted Kirby because he had his, he was pretty much 100% sold on Wells, and it has not worked out.
- 21:14SPEAKER_03: But all four of these candidates that you named are guys that we can really get behind.
- 21:19SPEAKER_03: Um, Anthony Lynn, you know, obviously the NFL experience with him.
- 21:25SPEAKER_03: Uh, it it looks like he's probably gonna lose his job with the LA Chargers.
- 21:30SPEAKER_03: Uh, but the thing about him is that he hasn't lost the locker room yet with with the Chargers.
- 21:36SPEAKER_03: And that's I mean, that's big time because we've seen coaches that just completely lose the locker room.
- 21:40SPEAKER_03: He's a guy that people will rally behind.
- 21:42SPEAKER_03: He's a Texas Tech guy, he uh is probably a fantastic recruiter.
- 21:47SPEAKER_03: I would be excited as hell to get him in and get his program rolling.
- 21:52SPEAKER_03: Um and you know, what do you what do you have to say about Anthony Lynn?
- 21:56SPEAKER_02: It'd be an exciting hire.
- 21:57SPEAKER_02: And I think just because you don't succeed at the end.
- 22:00SPEAKER_02: NFL level doesn't mean you're not a good football coach.
- 22:03SPEAKER_02: And we've seen that with Cliff Kingsbury.
- 22:05SPEAKER_02: You know, it's just they're not the same game, and people really need to stop thinking it is.
- 22:10SPEAKER_02: We've seen that, we've seen that with Nick's, we've seen that with Nick Saban, the greatest college football coach of all time, sucked in the NFL.
- 22:17SPEAKER_03: Yeah, it's just a different strokes for different folks, man.
- 22:20SPEAKER_03: Exactly.
- 22:20SPEAKER_03: It's it's it's a whole different game.
- 22:22SPEAKER_02: And like you said, I I think Anthony Lynn is a player's coach and he loves Lubbock.
- 22:27SPEAKER_02: He comes back to tech all the time, you know.
- 22:28SPEAKER_02: He he could he gets on the court and on the basketball court on the football field like every other season.
- 22:33SPEAKER_02: So the dude loves Lubbock, he loves tech, and I think he would absolutely would love the task of taking his alma mater to new heights.
- 22:40SPEAKER_02: And I I think it would be a great opportunity to try something new, you know, try trying an NFL guy and try someone who would probably rule the land the recruiting landscape.
- 22:51SPEAKER_02: You know, you have this NFL head coach trying to recruit you to Texas Tech, the guy that went there loved it.
- 22:56SPEAKER_02: It was a great player, by the way.
- 22:58SPEAKER_02: And it just I see magical things happening with him.
- 23:03SPEAKER_02: And um I I I he's the he's the number one guy for a good for a good reason for us, and uh I I can't see why anyone would be against that hire.
- 23:14SPEAKER_03: Yeah, no doubt.
- 23:15SPEAKER_03: But let's get into number two because number two is Brent Venables, he is the defensive coordinator with the Clemson Tigers, and you're like, Oh, why would he want to come to Texas Tech?
- 23:23SPEAKER_03: He's at Clemson.
- 23:24SPEAKER_03: We get it, and even he might not be, he's just this is just a wish list we're doing here.
- 23:29SPEAKER_03: So uh, but Brent Venables is a fairly realistic one.
- 23:32SPEAKER_02: We have reasons why we think they would come back, yeah.
- 23:34SPEAKER_03: It's a it's a realistic one for sure, but uh it's we just don't know what the guy because he has had a lot of talk.
- 23:41SPEAKER_03: Uh he's interviewed, he's talked with guys about potentially being head coaches at at programs over the last you know several years.
- 23:48SPEAKER_03: So the thing about Venables is I don't think he leaves that job at least until and he may not leave that job at all, he may just be happy where he's at, you know, being with Clemson, who is obviously one of the powerhouses of college football these days.
- 24:01SPEAKER_03: So he may just be happy with it.
- 24:03SPEAKER_03: But his son is currently on the team at Clemson, so I don't see him really leaving while his son is still there.
- 24:10SPEAKER_03: Uh, but it would be he's a defensive coordinator, he's a he's a defensive-oriented guy, he knows Kirby Hokut.
- 24:15SPEAKER_03: He was his what his roommate in college at Kansas State.
- 24:19SPEAKER_03: So, you know, that that would be an unbelievable hire.
- 24:22SPEAKER_03: I'd be happy to to rally behind him as well.
- 24:25SPEAKER_02: For sure.
- 24:25SPEAKER_02: Uh he uh, like you said, like he and uh he and Kirby Holcutt have a very tight relationship.
- 24:30SPEAKER_02: I do think he's the reason why we hired Matt Wells, actually, because uh whenever uh Clemson, I forget where he was, but whenever he he played, he his team played against Utah State, uh Matt Wells' Utah State, and he told Kirby Holcutt to watch out for this new young head coach named Matt Wells at Utah State.
- 24:46SPEAKER_02: Um, so I think he trusts him a lot.
- 24:48SPEAKER_02: I he probably tried to hire him in the first place to to have Matt Wells' job.
- 24:53SPEAKER_02: But see, I I think that that connection helps a lot, but I think your points kind of maybe overcome what the the possibility of him coming to tech.
- 25:01SPEAKER_02: But I think I think this would be a great first head coach job.
- 25:04SPEAKER_02: I mean, I I people like to rag on the especially outsiders, and a lot of hate uh spites spiteful insiders like to rag on Texas Tech, but this is a great job.
- 25:13SPEAKER_02: You have uh you have a you have billions of dollars behind you, you're in Texas, you're one of the most popular brands in Texas, you have amazing facilities.
- 25:21SPEAKER_02: So I think this would be a great place to start out.
- 25:24SPEAKER_02: It's not like you can't get talented kids here, and he can you have a passionate fan base behind you, so because I know that's it's probably a concern for him.
- 25:30SPEAKER_02: He probably doesn't want to step into a bear trap, but I don't think Texas Tech is a bear trap, but uh I I think he's probably the least likely on this list.
- 25:39SPEAKER_03: Yeah, he's and and the thing is he's not he's the one Texas Tech guy that's on this list, or the one non-Texas Tech guy that's on this list.
- 25:46SPEAKER_03: So I don't know if the fan base I think would rally behind the other three versus Venables, probably more.
- 25:51SPEAKER_03: Uh, especially this next guy, especially this next guy that we're talking about, Graham Harrell.
- 25:56SPEAKER_03: He is, of course, the former Texas Tech quarterback, uh one of the best quarterbacks we've had in history here at Texas Tech.
- 26:04SPEAKER_02: Well, the best college football had uh quarterbacks.
- 26:07SPEAKER_03: Yeah, no doubt.
- 26:08SPEAKER_03: He's in at the top, probably the probably peak Texas Tech football was when Graham Harrell was throwing throwing the pig skin for us.
- 26:15SPEAKER_03: Uh he's currently the offensive coordinator for USC.
- 26:19SPEAKER_03: Um, and he's looking to get a head coaching job.
- 26:22SPEAKER_03: And what you know, people will say, hey, this is just gonna be Cliff Kingsbury 2.0, but we have to remember that this is a different person.
- 26:30SPEAKER_03: This is not just and I know he's a former Texas Tech quarterback, he's offensive coordinator looking to be head coach.
- 26:36SPEAKER_03: It's everything that's similar to to Cliff, but it's a different person, it's a different guy with different schemes and different a different mind and everything like that.
- 26:45SPEAKER_03: I would be hyped if Graham Harrell wanted to be our first head or his first head coaching job would be here at tech.
- 26:51SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I obviously that is a scary thing.
- 26:53SPEAKER_02: People think that you're right, maybe it's it's Cliff 2.0, but I think a positive about him being Cliff 2.0 and quotations marks is the entire fan base would be there, like everyone would rally behind him.
- 27:03SPEAKER_02: Uh it would refresh the program and it would inject new life, people would be excited about it.
- 27:08SPEAKER_02: Um, but uh there's rumors going around that like that he is kind of set up to be the next USC head coach.
- 27:15SPEAKER_02: And I'm I'm not gonna try, I'm not like gonna like sit here and trying to solidify those rumors, but I mean that that shows if if he's set up, like if he's rumored to be a head coach of a blue blood, you he would absolutely come to his to his alma mater first if we called him, but it's you that that's gotta say something.
- 27:34SPEAKER_02: No one was saying that Cliff Kingsbury was in line to become head coach at Texas AM or become head coach anywhere else.
- 27:39SPEAKER_02: I bet Graham Harrell's at the top of a lot of short lists to become head coach at the program, be it be whether it's g5 or p5.
- 27:46SPEAKER_02: So it's I think he'd be a phenomenal hire.
- 27:48SPEAKER_02: I think what's what would be really important to Texas Tech is having an offensive identity because I think that's a really important point.
- 27:55SPEAKER_02: I know Cliff had that, but and and lacked the defense.
- 27:58SPEAKER_02: But we have zero offensive identity right now, and I would love a quarterback guy because Texas Tech puts some stellar quarterbacks on the grid hiring, and you know they would come with him.
- 28:10SPEAKER_03: Yeah, no doubt.
- 28:11SPEAKER_03: He would be he would be an exciting hire, and like we said earlier, we need something to rally the fan base, we need something to sell tickets, and I think Graham Harrell would be a guy that uh would sell some more tickets and and get and he has blue blood experience, exactly, no doubt, over there at USC.
- 28:26SPEAKER_03: So uh let's let's let's touch on the fourth guy uh to end kind of the coaching carousel talk with Sonny Dykes, of course.
- 28:33SPEAKER_03: The SMU head coach right now.
- 28:35SPEAKER_03: He's got the Dykes last name, of course.
- 28:37SPEAKER_03: Spike Dykes' son.
- 28:39SPEAKER_03: He's got the Texas Tech blood in him, and he's at SMU, who is, in my opinion, a a worse job than Texas Tech.
- 28:47SPEAKER_03: I don't know why anybody would argue differently right now, but um it'd be cool to see another Dykes here for sure.
- 28:54SPEAKER_02: That's that is the most legendary head coach we've ever had.
- 28:57SPEAKER_02: Okay, I know the pirate was big, but but no, spike spike is Texas Tech football.
- 29:02SPEAKER_02: He was what really what solidified our place in the Texas football landscape.
- 29:08SPEAKER_02: Um, and that would talk, talk about a legend in the making, then you know that's that's that'd be one of the coolest stories in Texas in uh in college football history.
- 29:17SPEAKER_02: Like, you know, your son goes and takes on, follows through the footsteps of the greatest football coach of the one before.
- 29:23SPEAKER_02: And it's not like we're we're just going out on a limb either.
- 29:25SPEAKER_02: SME's had a great season, and uh it's not like that's the easiest job in the world either.
- 29:30SPEAKER_02: So I I again I think he's a very realistic hire.
- 29:34SPEAKER_02: I don't know if he gets people as hyped as perhaps the others, but especially with the younger crowd.
- 29:39SPEAKER_02: But the old obviously the older crowd loves him, and that's probably where most of the money's coming from.
- 29:44SPEAKER_02: Um, so I I think the great thing about hiring him is you're hiring a college football head coach.
- 29:49SPEAKER_02: The others you're not, so he brings in the head coach experience with success at in Texas as well, which is a bonus as well.
- 29:56SPEAKER_02: He's already established a recruiting trail to uh to SMU, so he just transfers that to tech, which is obviously the better job.
- 30:03SPEAKER_02: Um, so it's I think it's I think it'd be a great hire, and it's a very Texas tech hire.
- 30:09SPEAKER_03: Yeah, it would yeah, no doubt.
- 30:11SPEAKER_03: And I I think we should bring up the kind of I don't know if it's elephant in the room, but uh something that's been talked about kind of swerving around Twitter the last few days.
- 30:20SPEAKER_03: Uh the donors have a big say in who gets hired because they're the money, and that's how college sports works, unfortunately.
- 30:27SPEAKER_03: But uh a guy that's name has been floated around is Art Bryals.
- 30:32SPEAKER_03: Um, and you and me, I don't I don't know if we have the same opinion on this or not, but uh Tristan, what would be kind of your first thought about Art Bryals being Texas Tech's new head coach?
- 30:46SPEAKER_02: I have a uh obviously a moral uh feeling about it that I I don't think I'll I'll dig into too much.
- 30:53SPEAKER_02: I'm just gonna go ahead and talk about this from a Texas Tech standpoint.
- 30:56SPEAKER_02: I am I let's say I am Texas Tech, you know.
- 30:58SPEAKER_02: I why you would ever want to bring in what would be the biggest PR nightmare you could ever imagine to Texas Tech, who has who right now is a very clean that's Ho Cut's thing, is he he tries to do things the right way in a clean way.
- 31:14SPEAKER_02: You bring in who the the the scummiest story to come out of college sports in the the past 50 years or whatever.
- 31:23SPEAKER_02: I don't even know.
- 31:23SPEAKER_02: It's probably maybe even the worst.
- 31:25SPEAKER_02: Um why you would ever want to deal with that?
- 31:29SPEAKER_02: I don't care if we go on and instantly win eight games.
- 31:33SPEAKER_02: Everyone would hate us.
- 31:36SPEAKER_02: We would be our our the double T would take some hits in the worst possible way.
- 31:42SPEAKER_02: People wouldn't want to send their daughters to Texas Tech, it would be that bad.
- 31:46SPEAKER_02: So I I don't want that to ever be our campus.
- 31:49SPEAKER_02: I don't think that doesn't fit Lubbock at all.
- 31:52SPEAKER_02: It's the friendliest city in America, you know, and we're we're we're we're good, we're good old Texas Tech.
- 31:57SPEAKER_02: You know, we're not we're not we we we try to I uh you know where I'm going with this.
- 32:02SPEAKER_02: I just that's where I stand on it.
- 32:04SPEAKER_02: Um I'm I I I would be just I would be incredibly disappointed.
- 32:08SPEAKER_03: I would be too.
- 32:09SPEAKER_03: Uh and the thing is we just had two different coaching scandals that just took place with the softball program and with the women's basketball program that uh don't make her be look very good right now.
- 32:20SPEAKER_03: So when you're thinking about hiring a new head coach, why would you go to the guy who has who has the biggest scandal in the last 20 years for college football?
- 32:30SPEAKER_03: Um, I would be disgusted if we hired our Bryals.
- 32:33SPEAKER_03: I would be uh disappointed in the highest caliber uh that man does not deserve to coach in college football ever again, in my opinion, for what went on at Baylor during those times.
- 32:45SPEAKER_03: Um, and I don't care if he's a Texas Tech guy, I don't care if he's an alum, I don't care about any of that.
- 32:49SPEAKER_03: This this man does not deserve to be a head coach at Texas Tech or a head coach at anybody in college football.
- 32:55SPEAKER_03: I get the whole second chances argument.
- 32:57SPEAKER_03: I get it.
- 32:58SPEAKER_03: That was too much that that this man doesn't deserve a second chance, and I would be horribly disappointed if we decided to do this.
- 33:04SPEAKER_03: Uh I it's not like I'm gonna boycott the team or anything like that, like some people are saying, but uh I'd just be extremely disappointed if we decide to go that route.
- 33:14SPEAKER_02: I mean, you you you and I feel the exact same way on us then.
- 33:18SPEAKER_02: I mean, yeah, yeah, there's there's gonna be people that say that he he didn't have any much to do with it or he was exonerated, blah blah blah.
- 33:26SPEAKER_02: But I mean, this was his football program.
- 33:29SPEAKER_02: Is he not supposed to have a relationship with every single player in the locker room?
- 33:33SPEAKER_02: Is this not something he's supposed to be aware of in general?
- 33:35SPEAKER_02: You know, it then that's uh you can never you're you're you're the leader of something, and a part the responsibility of being a leader for something is whenever something like that happens under your leadership, you get the blame.
- 33:48SPEAKER_02: And I mean, I don't even want to say for right or wrong.
- 33:50SPEAKER_02: You're the you're supposed to be the one that is the head of this.
- 33:54SPEAKER_02: What use they're supposed to reflect you, so if that's happening, it's a reflection on you.
- 33:59SPEAKER_02: So I I I do not want that at Texas Tech.
- 34:02SPEAKER_02: I expect more out of my school, and I I I thankfully I don't think there's a chance in hell it's gonna happen.
- 34:07SPEAKER_03: Absolutely, I agree with you.
- 34:09SPEAKER_03: I think that was just something that was swerving around the Twitter sphere, uh, like you know, a lot of things, but but it did bring up the conversation, especially after the Kansas game when we were thinking about you know new head coaches and all that kind of stuff.
- 34:20SPEAKER_03: Uh, I I really hope it doesn't happen, and I don't think it will.
- 34:23SPEAKER_03: So uh, but you know, back to the back to the season itself.
- 34:28SPEAKER_03: Uh I think one of the main points that we need to think about moving into 2021, obviously the quarterback situation, uh, and then keeping the skill position guys and keeping the defensive guys making sure they don't transfer off because we've seen transfers, uh, guys that have been good for Texas Tech that transfer because we're not winning games, especially in the recent recent memory here.
- 34:50SPEAKER_03: Um, but you know, keeping guys like Eric Ezukama.
- 34:53SPEAKER_03: I know he was so disappointed with the Kansas game and he let it let it loose kind of in the in the locker room afterwards in the press conference.
- 35:01SPEAKER_03: So uh keeping guys like him, keeping guys like Sir Rodric, making sure these guys don't transfer out of the program, you know, keeping them here because we that gives you a stable base and that gives you stuff to improve on.
- 35:14SPEAKER_03: But I we had some really bright spots this year, and we need to keep some of those linebackers as some of those defensive linemen, make sure they don't transfer out of here.
- 35:22SPEAKER_02: We need to focus on keeping them for sure, and then we have the some of the best receivers in the nation and uh an amazing running back core.
- 35:29SPEAKER_02: So I really want to keep those pieces.
- 35:31SPEAKER_02: Obviously, uh I keeping a coach probably helps maintain that, and but I some changes need do need to happen.
- 35:39SPEAKER_02: Also, something I don't think we've talked about this yet is recruiting.
- 35:41SPEAKER_02: I mean, you don't want to lose any of the recruits, so uh I uh it's you got to get now well as a third year, so before we talk in circles, just uh, but yeah, I agree with you.
- 35:53SPEAKER_03: No doubt, no doubt.
- 35:54SPEAKER_03: So, football season disappointing as it has been the last few seasons.
- 35:59SPEAKER_03: Uh, we're gonna, I know when football starts rolling around again, we're gonna be positive as always and and kind of have a false sense of positivity.
- 36:07SPEAKER_03: Uh, but you know, hopefully moving forward, we're gonna be better.
- 36:11SPEAKER_03: Um, and uh hopefully we see some changes on the coaching front.
- 36:15SPEAKER_02: Absolutely.
- 36:16SPEAKER_02: Hey, it's there's always something to look forward to, and that's always next year.
- 36:20SPEAKER_02: Always next year next year.
- 36:22SPEAKER_03: We got it.
- 36:23SPEAKER_03: Next year's our season, baby.
- 36:24SPEAKER_03: I'm drinking the Kool Aid.
- 36:27SPEAKER_02: All right, but hey, just one more thing on that before we move on for football before we're next year.
- 36:32SPEAKER_02: So, what do you think?
- 36:33SPEAKER_02: Six and six saves his job next year.
- 36:36SPEAKER_03: Yeah, yeah, and a lot a lot goes into that.
- 36:38SPEAKER_03: Uh, we don't even know if we're gonna have a real season next year.
- 36:41SPEAKER_03: You know, we thought we were gonna have a real season this year, and then that didn't happen.
- 36:44SPEAKER_03: So uh we'll see how how things pan out uh with the scheduling and with everything like that.
- 36:50SPEAKER_03: But uh yeah, I think in a normal season, six and six and a bowl win would save his job.
- 36:55SPEAKER_03: People may still not be happy.
- 36:58SPEAKER_03: So well, and especially if we lose tight games with stupid decisions like we did this year.
- 37:02SPEAKER_03: I mean, if we do that to to a UT or a Kansas State or whatever next season, it's like okay, this is just the same stuff.
- 37:09SPEAKER_03: We haven't seen a ton of improvement, you know.
- 37:12SPEAKER_03: So uh we'll just kind of play it by ear.
- 37:14SPEAKER_03: But I think six and six and a bowl win kind of saves Matt Wells.
- 37:17SPEAKER_02: Speaking of bowls, uh unfortunately don't I kind of changed my opinion from last episode.
- 37:22SPEAKER_02: It's not looking like we're going.
- 37:23SPEAKER_02: I've seen some rejections and we're not listed in any.
- 37:25SPEAKER_02: So that's good.
- 37:27SPEAKER_03: I mean, it's it's not a bad thing because it's not a good or a bad thing, I suppose.
- 37:31SPEAKER_03: Four wins, you don't deserve to be in a bowl period, so yeah, you know, just kind of move on.
- 37:35SPEAKER_03: Go into next season, and uh hopefully that's some motivation for some of the players.
- 37:40SPEAKER_03: But uh, let's okay.
- 37:42SPEAKER_03: I think we're done talking football, tough season.
- 37:44SPEAKER_03: But we all there's always next year, it's always next year, and we have basketball to look forward to.
- 37:50SPEAKER_03: Conference play starts on the 17th.
- 37:51SPEAKER_02: All we get to talk about for a while, man.
- 37:53SPEAKER_02: I know, and then we get to talk about baseball.
- 37:55SPEAKER_02: Hell yeah.
- 37:56SPEAKER_03: This is the good times, these are the good times.
- 38:00SPEAKER_03: These these are fun times, fun times for for Texas Tech Sports, baby.
- 38:04SPEAKER_03: So uh, but Tristan, why don't you give me your song of the week?
- 38:09SPEAKER_02: All right, so you know, here we are.
- 38:11SPEAKER_02: We're talking some Lubbock, what we want to see in Lubbock.
- 38:13SPEAKER_02: I thought we'd do a Lubbock guy that we haven't talked about yet, another country music man who I think is a next star.
- 38:21SPEAKER_02: I think this guy is going to he's already signed an Asheville record deal.
- 38:24SPEAKER_02: I think this guy's gonna take it by storm.
- 38:26SPEAKER_02: His name is Randall King.
- 38:28SPEAKER_02: He is a big Texas Tech fan.
- 38:30SPEAKER_02: Uh, he's he's gonna release a new EP this Friday.
- 38:33SPEAKER_02: And he just dropped a new song, very sweet song.
- 38:36SPEAKER_02: It's called Hey Moon, and it's about a uh a father who obviously doesn't get to see his child, and he's just talking to the moon saying, Look after my daughter.
- 38:45SPEAKER_02: It's a very sweet song.
- 38:46SPEAKER_02: He said I listened to a podcast about it.
- 38:48SPEAKER_02: He said it very well could have been just your normal love song, but he decided to take a different path with it and uh talk about a maybe a father-daughter relationship instead.
- 38:55SPEAKER_02: So it's a really sweet song.
- 38:56SPEAKER_02: The guy's amazing.
- 38:57SPEAKER_02: Y'all need to go dig into his uh uh album and into his library.
- 39:01SPEAKER_02: I think he's very George Strady, and I think y'all get that.
- 39:03SPEAKER_02: And uh yeah, go get a listen.
- 39:05SPEAKER_02: Hey Moon, Randall King.
- 39:25SPEAKER_03: We saw him live, didn't you?
- 39:27SPEAKER_03: Sort of we did, yeah.
- 39:30SPEAKER_03: We sort of saw him live.
- 39:32SPEAKER_03: Uh it was a block party at uh at the blue light, uh kind of over there in the depot district.
- 39:39SPEAKER_03: Uh I do remember, I I slightly remember that a little bit.
- 39:42SPEAKER_03: But he did, I think you always bring up him bringing it uh singing a George Strait song, don't you?
- 39:48SPEAKER_02: Yes, yes.
- 39:49SPEAKER_02: So uh that's uh he opened up for uh Mike Ryan that night, but you I don't think you and I made it.
- 39:55SPEAKER_02: So uh that was a great time, though.
- 39:57SPEAKER_02: Block party of the blue light.
- 39:59SPEAKER_02: Uh those are so much fun.
- 40:00SPEAKER_02: I'm sure many of our listeners are very familiar with those.
- 40:03SPEAKER_02: So uh sure we had I'm sure we had a hell of a time.
- 40:06SPEAKER_03: Sure, we had a hell of a time.
- 40:07SPEAKER_03: But very nice, very nice.
- 40:08SPEAKER_03: Uh Mike, you're gonna like so.
- 40:11SPEAKER_03: You're gonna like my pick again.
- 40:12SPEAKER_03: It's uh it's a song that you showed me probably, oh, I don't know, probably a couple years ago at this point.
- 40:19SPEAKER_03: But uh it's it's a guy that's not very well known, but it's a fun song, it's a weird, weird mix, weirdest song you've ever showed me before, but it's definitely a fun one.
- 40:30SPEAKER_03: It is Let Go by David Beck's Tejano Weekend.
- 40:36SPEAKER_03: And now listen, this song is absolutely ridiculous.
- 40:41SPEAKER_03: It is the whitest of white guys singing Tejano music.
- 40:45SPEAKER_03: It is it's it's I promise you, just give it a chance.
- 40:49SPEAKER_03: It's fun, it's something that I will put on every once in a while.
- 40:53SPEAKER_03: Just be it.
- 40:54SPEAKER_03: You just you just don't understand it.
- 40:56SPEAKER_03: I don't understand it still, but it's great.
- 40:58SPEAKER_03: It's it somehow works.
- 41:00SPEAKER_03: Uh, that was let go by David Beck's Tejano weekend.
- 41:05SPEAKER_04: It'll all the time if it's remained to happen.
- 41:10SPEAKER_04: It'll happen.
- 41:13SPEAKER_04: Oh yeah.
- 41:15SPEAKER_04: If a thing stops working out, we just let go.
- 41:21SPEAKER_02: Phenomenal pick.
- 41:23SPEAKER_02: I was waiting to put to to to say that one too eventually because I was gonna do it during the San Antonio Fiesta, but then COVID uh cancelled it.
- 41:30SPEAKER_02: But such a fun song.
- 41:32SPEAKER_02: I mean, talk about being Texas as heck.
- 41:35SPEAKER_02: So great pick, man.
- 41:37SPEAKER_02: I think people are gonna love that one.
