- 2:16Speaker 1: look at your computer. We're not doing this today. You're
- 2:19Speaker 1: gonna work with me and we're gonna make you do
- 2:21Speaker 1: what to do. Okay, So you guys, I want to
- 2:26Speaker 1: introduce you to Miss Phoenix.
- 2:28Speaker 2: How are you, girly, I'm good? How are you?
- 2:33Speaker 1: I am great? Welcome to SI book gousand friends.
- 2:38Speaker 2: Thank you for having me.
- 2:40Speaker 1: Of course, this is an honor. You're from my neck
- 2:45Speaker 1: of the woods, so you guys, let me get a
- 2:48Speaker 1: little something out. So I just did yesterday. I did
- 2:52Speaker 1: staff there. Okay, twenty years of service. Congratulations to me.
- 2:56Speaker 1: Been through it, been through it, love it. So me
- 3:01Speaker 1: and three co workers, we're talking about the talent, the
- 3:06Speaker 1: hidden talent, the unknown talent that we have in our area.
- 3:12Speaker 1: And look at this, I am interviewing somebody that.
- 3:16Speaker 2: Is that talent.
- 3:18Speaker 1: So this is a complete honor. So next year, y'all
- 3:22Speaker 1: look for her at Charles County Poppet glob. Okay, so
- 3:28Speaker 1: tell us a little bit about yourself.
- 3:33Speaker 3: My author name is Sonier Phoenix. I'm originally from Jamaica, Queens,
- 3:40Speaker 3: New York. I have been down here in Charleston for
- 3:44Speaker 3: eleven years.
- 3:47Speaker 2: I'm a mom, I am a Lucas Warrior.
- 3:52Speaker 3: I am a kidney transplant recipient seven years in Counting
- 3:59Speaker 3: Este yes, ma'am. And I just love to write very
- 4:07Speaker 3: vivid stories with crazy cliffhangers. And I am obsessed with
- 4:13Speaker 3: nineties R and B in early two thousands.
- 4:19Speaker 1: See that's why I mean after that, remember what you said,
- 4:27Speaker 1: you need that knowledge, kid? Okay, okay, so what made
- 4:33Speaker 1: you want to become an author?
- 4:39Speaker 2: In high school?
- 4:40Speaker 3: I got into my Elective was center for writing, so
- 4:45Speaker 3: you know, we read a lot.
- 4:47Speaker 2: Of boring.
- 4:49Speaker 3: Books and then I was just like, this is so whack.
- 4:53Speaker 3: And then a friend of mine introduced me to I'm
- 4:58Speaker 3: Sister Soldier. So my first real urban book was like
- 5:02Speaker 3: everybody else post one to ever. And then I read
- 5:07Speaker 3: fly Girl and it just it was a snowball effect
- 5:11Speaker 3: after that, and I was just like, oh, these books
- 5:14Speaker 3: is crazy. I think growing up in New York could
- 5:18Speaker 3: write something like this. And I think it was like
- 5:23Speaker 3: two thousand and one.
- 5:25Speaker 2: I was on MSN.
- 5:27Speaker 3: I'm telling my age right now, but I was on
- 5:29Speaker 3: MSN and there was like this fan fiction group, so
- 5:35Speaker 3: I dabbled in it and I wrote like a little
- 5:38Speaker 3: short story about B two K members and it got
- 5:43Speaker 3: a lot of attention. And from then on I was
- 5:48Speaker 3: just you know, dabble hearing their right little short stories.
- 5:52Speaker 2: Never really took it serious. And then.
- 5:56Speaker 3: In twenty twenty, my best friend passed away, and you know,
- 6:01Speaker 3: kind of to pay homage to her, I continued the
- 6:06Speaker 3: stories that we used to write together, and in twenty
- 6:10Speaker 3: twenty two I got the courage to actually self publish.
- 6:13Speaker 2: It and I just been doing it ever since.
- 6:19Speaker 1: Wow, So how many books do you have in your
- 6:21Speaker 1: catalog right now?
- 6:23Speaker 3: I have two novellas, which is Closure and Beautifully Shattered.
- 6:28Speaker 3: And then I did take part in the twenty twenty
- 6:32Speaker 3: five Just Read anthology with AA Lewis, Cassandra Charle, Kaylin Hunt.
- 6:41Speaker 3: Who else is in here, Simonnet, Vivian Blue Lady Rainmaker.
- 6:50Speaker 3: So it's like eleven other authors and we just did
- 6:55Speaker 3: a bunch of short stories.
- 6:59Speaker 1: Listen here that name that group by itself, do you
- 7:03Speaker 1: know how much? Okay, listen that group that she did
- 7:09Speaker 1: just named you guys, y'all need to go ahead watch
- 7:12Speaker 1: the replay and write them all down, especially.
- 7:15Speaker 4: Lewis Louise You're bad boy as Yeah, I feel like
- 7:21Speaker 4: that's she not for nothing.
- 7:26Speaker 3: She she really gave me a lot of encouragement last
- 7:29Speaker 3: year during Bray, during the Brave Festival, she she pushed
- 7:35Speaker 3: me and she was just like, listen twenty twenty twenty
- 7:37Speaker 3: twenty five Brave Festival, I need you. She was like,
- 7:41Speaker 3: I'm not even playing with you, like we're gonna be
- 7:44Speaker 3: celebrating you. And I was just like, Okay, I'm gonna
- 7:47Speaker 3: stop being scary and really do it.
- 7:52Speaker 1: Listen. I love Brave. I love ray. I have someone
- 7:57Speaker 1: that's gonna be in the Brave Festival, and I love it.
- 8:03Speaker 1: It's a great way to introduce authors and readers together.
- 8:08Speaker 1: And I just asked, if you are a reader and
- 8:12Speaker 1: you're participating in Bray, the least she can do is
- 8:17Speaker 1: leave a review. Yes, that's the least she can do
- 8:23Speaker 1: is leave a review. Now, if you want to do more,
- 8:25Speaker 1: you can share the book in box of the authors
- 8:28Speaker 1: say hey, thank you, because a lot of these authors
- 8:31Speaker 1: don't get thank you. They don't mm hm, and they
- 8:37Speaker 1: work be Oh my god, and y'all wait to y'all
- 8:39Speaker 1: see her covers because y'all don I'm a cover checks,
- 8:42Speaker 1: you know, and I look at these covers all day.
- 8:48Speaker 1: So I'm ready to get to these books. So what
- 8:56Speaker 1: what is your motivation for your right?
- 9:02Speaker 3: It's an escape. For me, it's you know, it's therapeutic
- 9:08Speaker 3: for me. So when I'm going through something, I'll just
- 9:12Speaker 3: get lost in the characters and just right right, right,
- 9:15Speaker 3: right right.
- 9:17Speaker 2: And I typically like to.
- 9:20Speaker 3: Incorporate some type of autoimmune disease in the books because
- 9:26Speaker 3: a lot of us Brown women and men deal with
- 9:33Speaker 3: these autoimmune diseases and nobody understands what we're going through.
- 9:38Speaker 3: So I kind of want to shed light to that
- 9:42Speaker 3: because people are looking at me and be like, Oh,
- 9:44Speaker 3: you're not sick, there's nothing wrong with you. You don't
- 9:48Speaker 3: know half of what autoimmune disease does to a person mentally, physically, emotionally.
- 9:58Speaker 3: So when I'm in that mode, when I'm going through
- 10:03Speaker 3: a crisis or something and I feel like nobody will understand,
- 10:08Speaker 3: I put that in the characters because they understand what
- 10:13Speaker 3: I'm going through, I guess because it's me writing it.
- 10:16Speaker 1: So I like that. I like that, and it rais awareness.
- 10:26Speaker 1: That's very smart and very creepy. Have you ever had
- 10:32Speaker 1: your readers come to you and what do they say
- 10:38Speaker 1: to you?
- 10:42Speaker 3: Some people ask me like, well, are these things that
- 10:46Speaker 3: you went through dealing with your lucas? And I'm just like, yeah,
- 10:51Speaker 3: you know, it gets scary. But it's not just me.
- 10:55Speaker 3: I have friends who have sickle cell. I have friends
- 10:58Speaker 3: who have a mess. So sometimes I take things that
- 11:03Speaker 3: they have gone through with their permission, and I'll put
- 11:07Speaker 3: my own little twist to it to like you said,
- 11:09Speaker 3: bring awareness to the things. The invisible diseases is what
- 11:15Speaker 3: I call them.
- 11:17Speaker 1: Okay, okay, so let's go to these books of yours,
- 11:25Speaker 1: looking here, looking here, y'all, especially that Closure. So which
- 11:34Speaker 1: one would you like to start off first? And tell
- 11:36Speaker 1: us a little bit about We could start.
- 11:39Speaker 3: With Closure because technically it's not a series, but Beautifully
- 11:44Speaker 3: Shattered has a lot to do with Closure, so it's
- 11:49Speaker 3: easier to start with Closure and then go into Beautifully Shattered.
- 11:55Speaker 1: Okay, so tell us a little bit about Closure.
- 11:59Speaker 3: So Closure is a second chance romance with a lot
- 12:05Speaker 3: of unexpected events. They Derek and Shakima were dating in
- 12:15Speaker 3: high school and then you know, they went their separate ways,
- 12:19Speaker 3: but the universe said their story wasn't finished. So they
- 12:25Speaker 3: run into each other and they find out well not
- 12:28Speaker 3: they Derek finds out a little secret, and that secret
- 12:35Speaker 3: kind of rocks his world and shifts his life's path.
- 12:40Speaker 3: And they attempt to rekindle a relationship, but Derek has
- 12:48Speaker 3: a girlfriend and she's not too fond of him rekindling
- 12:53Speaker 3: that relationship. And then, you know, towards the end of
- 12:58Speaker 3: the book, we find out some things about the girlfriend.
- 13:02Speaker 2: And it gets a little crazy, you know, a lot.
- 13:05Speaker 3: Of shocks and surprises and people are not who they
- 13:08Speaker 3: say they are, and then their secret babies and stuff
- 13:12Speaker 3: so after while, No, honestly, I've had a person that
- 13:36Speaker 3: read the book. She read the book last year, but
- 13:39Speaker 3: you know she's she works in the school district. So
- 13:42Speaker 3: she was just like, well, it took me some time
- 13:43Speaker 3: to actually like sit down and read it.
- 13:45Speaker 5: And I literally got a phone call, not an inbox,
- 13:52Speaker 5: not a text message, I got a phone call, and
- 13:56Speaker 5: it was just like, where's the rest of the book?
- 14:00Speaker 3: He is Diamond, And do we need to pull up
- 14:03Speaker 3: on her for real? Like this needs to be on
- 14:05Speaker 3: to b or b et.
- 14:07Speaker 1: Plus or something.
- 14:09Speaker 3: Somebody gets Tyler Perry on the phone right now, because
- 14:12Speaker 3: absolutely not.
- 14:13Speaker 2: And then the way that I ended it, people.
- 14:17Speaker 3: Were really like, no, no, no, no, no, no no, You're
- 14:20Speaker 3: not just gonna end it like this, where's.
- 14:22Speaker 2: The rest of this? What happens? So then comes Beautifully Shattered.
- 14:31Speaker 1: Oh see, you please don't make me find out where
- 14:38Speaker 1: you love as much? But you love close now, so
- 14:47Speaker 1: let's talk about it.
- 14:51Speaker 3: So Beautifully Shattered is Diamond? Sorry, Diamond is the girlfriend
- 14:59Speaker 3: of Derek.
- 15:00Speaker 2: In Closure and Beautifully.
- 15:04Speaker 3: Shattered, we find out why Diamond is obsessed with Derek.
- 15:12Speaker 3: We dive into her childhood, the traumas that she faced
- 15:19Speaker 3: as a child, and then once she realizes that Derek
- 15:29Speaker 3: wants Shakima and not her, she takes drastic, drastic measures
- 15:35Speaker 3: to get her man back. And when I say drastic,
- 15:39Speaker 3: I mean drastic, like flying across the country and creating
- 15:45Speaker 3: a whole new life just to be with this man.
- 15:50Speaker 2: And it doesn't it. Yeah, Derek is that guy?
- 16:00Speaker 6: Oh okay, okay, so oh okay. So so let me
- 16:11Speaker 6: find out. So if you had to choose either one
- 16:14Speaker 6: of these two books to give to.
- 16:18Speaker 1: Me, which one would you choose? And why?
- 16:26Speaker 2: Which one would I choose? I would say Closure.
- 16:30Speaker 3: I would say Closure because you have to read Closure
- 16:35Speaker 3: to understand Beautifully Shattered. So it's gonna make you go
- 16:40Speaker 3: get beautifully shattered.
- 16:44Speaker 1: Okay, Okay, so you're telling me I should go get closure.
- 16:53Speaker 1: This Closure is gonna make me want to read beautiful
- 16:57Speaker 1: truly Shattered. But what if I want this, this this
- 17:00Speaker 1: book boy trained for myself. I'm not gonna want to
- 17:04Speaker 1: read beautifully Shattered. Becau see, I might have to hurt
- 17:07Speaker 1: her trying to come and get my man.
- 17:09Speaker 3: No, because you'll understand why she clung to him the
- 17:16Speaker 3: way that she did. It's it's it's gonna from from
- 17:22Speaker 3: what I have been told it's gonna take you on.
- 17:24Speaker 2: Closure is gonna take you on an emotional roller coaster.
- 17:29Speaker 3: And the cliff hanger ending is gonna make you go wait,
- 17:33Speaker 3: hold on, hold on, hold on, hold on, wait now
- 17:35Speaker 3: what happened? Okay, yeah, so we need to go figure
- 17:38Speaker 3: out why Diamond is cuckoo for Coco Pups because she's
- 17:42Speaker 3: not right in the head. I'll tell you that now,
- 17:43Speaker 3: she's not right in the head.
- 17:46Speaker 1: Oh oh, she wanted him one.
- 17:49Speaker 2: Yeah, she's that. My me and my man, my man.
- 17:54Speaker 1: Oh, them the scary ones because them the one that
- 17:56Speaker 1: will do almost anything from my man, my man. Listen, KI,
- 18:01Speaker 1: if you ever hear chicks say my man, my man,
- 18:05Speaker 1: my man, run because it ain't all the way up. Yeah,
- 18:09Speaker 1: that's one of them true ownership type chicks. So we're
- 18:15Speaker 1: getting close to that little closing period. But member, I
- 18:19Speaker 1: told you that we had some fun questions. Mm hmm, yes,
- 18:25Speaker 1: about time. Alright, here we go, here we go. We
- 18:31Speaker 1: got a call and someone is read Closure and they
- 18:35Speaker 1: would like to make it into a Lifetime mini series.
- 18:39Speaker 1: They want to bring to the Lifetime. You know, Lifetime
- 18:41Speaker 1: got them dramas, They got them dramas who would play
- 18:48Speaker 1: your main male character, and it has to be her
- 18:55Speaker 1: nineties R and B male. Who would it be?
- 19:00Speaker 2: Who would play Derek nineties R and B.
- 19:06Speaker 3: I'm gonna go Casey Casey from Casey and Jojo well
- 19:12Speaker 3: Jojsy Casey.
- 19:15Speaker 1: Now, that's the first time I've heard that one. Why
- 19:19Speaker 1: did you choose Keith now Can? And this is the
- 19:22Speaker 1: small one, right mhm?
- 19:25Speaker 3: Is case the big Casey is the one that was
- 19:29Speaker 3: marriage and why I picked him?
- 19:31Speaker 2: Because it's toxic. Derek is toxic.
- 19:39Speaker 1: I want Derek now got toxic? Okay? Is he that
- 19:47Speaker 1: is he? Is he that good? Toxic or that turn
- 19:51Speaker 1: of chick crazy?
- 19:52Speaker 2: Toxic Derek?
- 19:55Speaker 3: Is that? No nonsense? I'm I'm telling you what's good
- 20:01Speaker 3: for you, but you don't want to listen to me
- 20:04Speaker 3: because you got daddy issues.
- 20:06Speaker 1: Toxic Dang. I can't even come back with that one man,
- 20:19Speaker 1: So he is that listen to me? I'm gonna put
- 20:22Speaker 1: you in your police but I'm doing it because I
- 20:23Speaker 1: love you type toxic. Yeah, Dang, I think I got
- 20:33Speaker 1: back on. Okay, And now the female, but she has
- 20:43Speaker 1: to be a ninety six sickcom actress. Who would she
- 20:48Speaker 1: be and.
- 20:49Speaker 3: Why ninety sick calm actress. And who would she be hmmm,
- 20:56Speaker 3: ninety sitcom to Shea Arnold, She's gonna be Pam.
- 21:03Speaker 1: Ooh, why Pam?
- 21:09Speaker 3: I would pick to Sheena Arnold one because her sister
- 21:12Speaker 3: has Lucas, so I'm definitely gonna throw that in there too,
- 21:16Speaker 3: because she's so stubborn, like she didn't want nobody to
- 21:23Speaker 3: tell her what to do.
- 21:24Speaker 2: I'm gonna do what I want to do, how I
- 21:25Speaker 2: want to do it. It ain't nobody gonna tell me different. Hm.
- 21:34Speaker 1: Okay, I can see. Ooh, that's Casey and Tsha Arnold.
- 21:42Speaker 1: Ooh that is a combination. Oh God, all right, Lifetime
- 21:48Speaker 1: calling and said, you know, we love that, we love
- 21:51Speaker 1: this combination. Closure was a hit, but now we need
- 21:54Speaker 1: a soundtrack. That's that one song that would represent beautifully
- 22:00Speaker 1: simplifying the part two? What song would represent book two?
- 22:10Speaker 1: From the did you choose that's from the nineties.
- 22:18Speaker 2: Relia, the one I Gave My Heart too?
- 22:23Speaker 1: And why did you choose that one? Because that's that's
- 22:27Speaker 1: a that's a strong song. Now, that's one of them
- 22:33Speaker 1: wailing snot coming down your nose type song. Back in
- 22:37Speaker 1: the days where we didn't know what we were singing about,
- 22:40Speaker 1: but I was singing it.
- 22:43Speaker 2: Because you that once line.
- 22:47Speaker 3: How could the one I gave my heart to break
- 22:49Speaker 3: my heart so bad? How could the one who made
- 22:53Speaker 3: me happy make me feel so sad? That is diamond
- 22:57Speaker 3: in a nutshell because she Derek wholeheartedly and he crushed
- 23:04Speaker 3: her when he picked Shakima over her.
- 23:10Speaker 1: Okay, lifetime call again. They say, you know what, the
- 23:17Speaker 1: movie was great, the soundtrack for the second book was great,
- 23:22Speaker 1: and you know what, we feel you deserve a movie.
- 23:25Speaker 1: So now we're gonna make a movie about you. Who
- 23:30Speaker 1: would you give.
- 23:31Speaker 7: The honor a plane you from the nineties? Well, you
- 23:39Speaker 7: know what, let's just let this be anybody who would
- 23:42Speaker 7: you give that honor to?
- 23:47Speaker 2: Mm Hmmky Palma? I'm going Kiki Palma.
- 23:56Speaker 1: Ooh. I do like her. She nobody, but she is
- 24:01Speaker 1: a very good actress, very versatile. She's a very good actress.
- 24:05Speaker 1: So why did you choose Kiki Palmer?
- 24:08Speaker 3: Because there's levels to Kiki, Like she could be funny,
- 24:11Speaker 3: she could be serious. You know, she could give you drama,
- 24:16Speaker 3: she could give you comedy, she could give you action,
- 24:20Speaker 3: and she could sing and dance.
- 24:24Speaker 1: Yeah, because she proved that when she did that Usher.
- 24:27Speaker 1: That tribute to Usher was that the b et O
- 24:29Speaker 1: or the Soul Train Award.
- 24:31Speaker 2: One of them was one of them?
- 24:33Speaker 1: Yes, all right, So we got Casey and th Arnold
- 24:39Speaker 1: for closure. Then we have book two, we had the
- 24:43Speaker 1: one I gave my heart to, and then the person
- 24:47Speaker 1: to play you, Kiki Palmer. All of this success is beautiful,
- 24:52Speaker 1: but we're gonna bring it back to the roots of writing.
- 24:56Speaker 2: M hm.
- 24:56Speaker 1: You got call and you are like, oh my god,
- 25:00Speaker 1: I would love the co author a book with you. You
- 25:06Speaker 1: chose me. Oh my god, who would that person on
- 25:11Speaker 1: the other end of the phone be? They ooh not
- 25:18Speaker 1: the mother?
- 25:20Speaker 2: Why why are you then?
- 25:26Speaker 3: Because like, I ain't had no business reading those books
- 25:31Speaker 3: when I was reading them.
- 25:32Speaker 2: But now as an adult, I know why I read
- 25:36Speaker 2: those books. And she's just off the wall.
- 25:44Speaker 3: It makes you really be like, oh, okay, I like
- 25:49Speaker 3: her storytelling more so than the eroticness of the books.
- 25:56Speaker 3: But that erotic gives it back.
- 26:01Speaker 2: And you know it was.
- 26:03Speaker 1: What was your favorite? What was your favorite book? By Zane?
- 26:07Speaker 2: This is the a p F.
- 26:10Speaker 1: Yoh that was mine. You can't tell me, yo, you
- 26:15Speaker 1: can tell me them chicks. I thought for sure that
- 26:18Speaker 1: when she had her little It was an HBO series,
- 26:21Speaker 1: The Yes that Sisters of the A p F.
- 26:26Speaker 2: She turned to one but she didn't nope.
- 26:30Speaker 1: And I was barely shocked at that. All the drama
- 26:33Speaker 1: enough things, not the things, the things that the thanks
- 26:43Speaker 1: never forget. We didn't have no sense reading those about.
- 26:48Speaker 1: But see I didn't read them at that time. I
- 26:51Speaker 1: wasn't read getting when I was younger, I didn't start reading.
- 26:54Speaker 1: So I started working at the library and that was
- 26:58Speaker 1: one of the second round the book, because the first
- 27:01Speaker 1: one I read was Thugs and the Woman who Loved
