- 0:02Yeah, lace them up another way. Another.
- 0:12Easy double. Yeah.
- 0:15From the track to the rodeo, we talk that talk splits on the
- 0:18watch, but we still take the Mick.
- 0:19Dean in Perth with the long run, legs going, breaks the fire when
- 0:22the session gets thick. Ryan in the mix with the numbers
- 0:24and plans from everything, the medals, Yeah, we break it all
- 0:26down. Hard graft Monday left about a
- 0:28Sunday still chasing. What is happening everyone?
- 0:32Welcome to London Call in 2026. I'm your host Ryan and I am
- 0:36extremely excited to be joined by three very special guests for
- 0:40a special easy double podcast series in the lead up to London
- 0:43Marathon. We'll try and get together
- 0:46roughly every couple of weeks and catch up and we'll follow
- 0:49the lad's journey all the way to the start and the finish line.
- 0:53Now I guess over to the fun part.
- 0:56We've got 3 introductions so you'll have to bear with me
- 0:59Welcome to don't know how the other guys are going to feel
- 1:02about this. The fastest marathoner on the
- 1:04show at the start of the series will he be the fastest man on
- 1:08the show at the end of the series?
- 1:10Dialing in from sunny Brisbane, the two O 9 Australian
- 1:13representative welcome Tim Vincent that.
- 1:20Is too good. You've got to keep that in.
- 1:27He can't be that happy to be here.
- 1:29Yeah, happy to be here now. Fuck off, I'm gone.
- 1:34It was an intro. He.
- 1:38Just took the limelight and left us.
- 1:40Yeah, yeah, that was it. He's done his bit.
- 1:45I'm out. All right, we'll come and speak
- 1:47to Tim in a minute. When he's back, we'll go.
- 1:50We'll go to the second fastest marathon on the show, the guy
- 1:54with the fastest half marathon PB fresh off the back of an
- 1:57amazing run at Barcelona Half. And he's been there.
- 2:00He's done it all before. This time last year, he ran
- 2:03London Marathon. Welcome to the show, Jake Smith.
- 2:05Thanks. For having me, yeah, hopefully
- 2:10can, like you said, beat Tim's PB, but if he ever comes back
- 2:15onto the podcast. But I'm looking forward to
- 2:18talking to all you guys. I'm looking forward to seeing
- 2:20Jake in London in a couple of, well, nine weeks now.
- 2:25I know he has about 17 marathons before then, but I'm excited to
- 2:29see him. Yeah, the European standard just
- 2:33sits precariously just below Tim's PB, doesn't it?
- 2:36So I've no doubt that will be at the forefront of your mind.
- 2:40Yeah, I think we also will have like a massive group.
- 2:44I am going to put a request in for a pacer because last year
- 2:47one of the guys I trained with the Uganda took them up to 38
- 2:51kilometers at two O 9 pace. So I am going to request that
- 2:54one guy he's called Abel. So I'm going to put my a big ask
- 3:00him to be pace in the group. So we just have, we know we have
- 3:03someone who can get us the full way, almost.
- 3:06That would be lovely. You lay it up there.
- 3:09What's the weather like in Cardiff?
- 3:11Shape. It's it's rained every day since
- 3:15the start of the year. We were just talking about it's
- 3:17actually getting a little bit warmer now.
- 3:18It's like 1012°. Yeah, it's not it's not nice.
- 3:24It's probably the worst winter we've had in a long time in
- 3:29terms of the rain. So it's not fun.
- 3:31And will you just be grinding it out there in Cardiff up until
- 3:34race day? Yeah, I have a couple of races
- 3:37before I'm doing Bath Half, which is the, well, like the
- 3:41world half trials race. And then doing Berlin is a bit
- 3:44of a race stimulation, stimulation.
- 3:47Apart from that, I have a little garage gym where I do a lot of
- 3:51cross training. Got just got a squat rack in,
- 3:53got a treadmill, have no idea what calibration it's on.
- 3:56It does feel a lot harder than normal.
- 3:59And then, yeah, probably meet up with Dan Nash quite a bit.
- 4:03So yeah, it's it's going to be good fun.
- 4:08This. Yeah, It'll be tough, but we'll
- 4:10be good. Nice, well we'll just go back
- 4:14and chat to Tim seen as he temporarily left us.
- 4:16So Tim you back please stay now you're all good.
- 4:21We thought you were just trying to get an early nice already.
- 4:26No, he's teasing us. Oh, playing games right now.
- 4:34This is going to be a parody, right?
- 4:38Go to the other man. Last but certainly not least, he
- 4:43doesn't quite have the PBS of Tim and Jake, but if you think
- 4:45that's going to stop and try, and you're most certainly
- 4:47incorrect. He does however, still hold a
- 4:50very impressive PB of 214 from Tokyo last year.
- 4:54It's Jake ran to Japan. Barraclough.
- 4:56How are you doing mate? They are very good.
- 4:59I can't believe I'm the hobby jogger on this podcast.
- 5:02I'm not. Not just that, but I'm not even
- 5:05the quickest Jake on the pod. This is this is some kind of
- 5:08sick joke. I don't know how we've ended up
- 5:10with this, but yeah, I've got to step up my game to home mind
- 5:13against these boys. Yeah, it's quite ground and not
- 5:17even being the fastest Jake in a four person chat room isn't.
- 5:22It painful, yeah. I never thought it would come to
- 5:23this, but yeah, actually, like Jake was saying, the the the
- 5:28reason I wanted to do London was pretty much that group factor.
- 5:31Like the the fact that, yeah, it sounds like a good shout.
- 5:34Get that pacemaker in, drag us through because I say Japan,
- 5:38unbelievable if you're in 205 shape, but that's the slowest
- 5:43they're going to set the pacemakers.
- 5:45It's like, unless you can go through half in a 62, there's no
- 5:49point in in being in these Japanese marathons.
- 5:51You're going to be soloing start to finish.
- 5:53So it's like, for me, I feel like London's absolutely unreal.
- 5:56There'll be a ton of guys going for that 209.
- 5:59Hopefully we get a massive squad rolling along.
- 6:01So I'm just going to, yeah, hopefully, if training goes
- 6:04well, jump in that pack. Just hang on for dear life as
- 6:07long as I can. I know you're potentially doing
- 6:10Tokyo this weekend, which is maybe up in the air at the
- 6:13minute as well, but what would the start line there look like
- 6:17for you in terms of like, do you have anyone to follow if you are
- 6:20going to race it or anything? So it's probably going to come
- 6:24down to basically last year I did it with the elite female
- 6:29group. So they were going, they had a
- 6:31pacemaker for 308 per K. So it's meant to be 212 marathon
- 6:35pace, just outrageously quick. So we had a massive squad there
- 6:39because after that it was like no man's land from 2:12 to about
- 6:442:06, maybe just complete gap. So it's like I'd like to fall
- 6:48somewhere in in the middle ideally, but I think it's a
- 6:51whole lot safer going slower route.
- 6:54So my thinking is actually it's August going to come down to the
- 6:58technical meeting. So I'm going to, I'm actually
- 7:00doing a YouTube live stream. I've got to give it a little
- 7:02plug. Yeah, I'm going to do a live
- 7:03stream straight after that technical meeting, basically
- 7:06announcing what the game plan is on race day.
- 7:09Because I literally don't know until we have that technical
- 7:11meeting and they announce what the pacemakers are going.
- 7:15I don't know whether it's going to be jump in the female group
- 7:17or try and just do it solo, maybe pack up with a couple
- 7:21other guys. It's a little up in the air.
- 7:22And then actually, as you alluded to, wherever I actually
- 7:26start is the other question as I've effectively had a week off
- 7:32trying to be a battle this Patella issue.
- 7:35So there's been a little bit of a bumpy year last week.
- 7:38Did that Patella thing flare up from the like the 30 case study
- 7:42had done on the snowy ice roofs? It was, it had that 30K had some
- 7:48actually quite a lot of up and downs.
- 7:50So it's like a lap course. There's about 3 sort of hills,
- 7:54it's going over these bridges and every lap.
- 7:56So I think it was just hammering down these hills.
- 7:59Like the next time I caught actually running it, I was like,
- 8:01oh, this is so easy. Like this is this is perfect.
- 8:04I'm in the best shape I've ever been.
- 8:05And then it was the next day just the quads were battered and
- 8:08that just kind of blew out my knee I think.
- 8:10Yeah, put the little bit of strain on the Patella.
- 8:14So it's it's one of them as well where you can't run through any
- 8:17other little *** I'd try and power through.
- 8:19But with this is a bit like Achilles, like those tendons are
- 8:22just nasty. So I had to sit out and I'm
- 8:25hoping just like manage a job today that I can sort of build
- 8:28it back and just, yeah, squeeze back into shape for the start
- 8:33line. Well, you're the master of
- 8:34anticipation and building hype, so I won't push you for an
- 8:38answer, but we'll we'll be following and waiting to see if
- 8:41you're on that start line. Exactly, it's all for the
- 8:44YouTube always part of the. Storyline, Tim, in terms of the
- 8:47race you're going to be travelling the further, so I
- 8:50wanted to ask you all, but I'll start with you.
- 8:52Why London Marathon and how did it come about that you actually
- 8:55got a star in the elite field there?
- 8:57And what was your reaction once you got that confirmed?
- 9:03Every time Shit. Yeah, We'll see what happens if
- 9:08he comes back. Oh, yeah.
- 9:12Yeah. Jake Smith, you were there this
- 9:16time last year. You've done it all before.
- 9:20You know what to expect. You know what it feels like.
- 9:23Can you give Jake and Tim, if he returns, an insight into what
- 9:27what that race they feel and is like going over Tower Bridge?
- 9:30Where's the atmospheric points where you're looking deep into
- 9:33your soul and it's quiet and dark?
- 9:39I can't really explain how crazy it is.
- 9:42Like I've done like quite a few races in different countries and
- 9:48everything like that, but you can't actually hear yourself
- 9:51think around across Tower Bridge and it's actually quite a scary
- 9:55feeling. And you don't going over Tower
- 9:58Bridge. You actually need to make sure
- 10:00when you don't get over excited because the bridge isn't flat.
- 10:03It's like a tiny, you know, like bridges are tiny incline up to
- 10:07it and down and there's people both sides screaming.
- 10:10And I mean Jake, like I thought I was going to get a lot of like
- 10:16shout outs and stuff, but I think the name Jake might get
- 10:19shout out a lot this year, which is a good thing.
- 10:23But it's it's a wicked, wicked race.
- 10:26I mean, as you know, like the first half, the 1st 5K is rapid
- 10:29because it is downhill. The first half you do go through
- 10:33some, don't be rude to anyone who lives there, but shite areas
- 10:37in London and makes me makes you want to run a bit quicker
- 10:40through it. And that's what I always tell
- 10:42myself. The group situation is going to
- 10:45be incredible for us. And like I guess Tim might go a
- 10:48bit for a quicker group and that would be like the Phil Sessman,
- 10:52maybe Mohammed job like 12 and Wayne.
- 10:54So he will always have a group as well if he wants slightly
- 10:57quicker. Going through Canary Wharf is a
- 11:00bit there are some quiet times. I remember last year I got
- 11:02dropped at my pace. They dropped me off at 26 K and
- 11:06I was at a major and there was not one athlete in front or
- 11:09behind. You couldn't see anyone and that
- 11:10was a bit weird being in a major marathon and no one being there.
- 11:15So I had to grind out and catch. I went past Phil who's like he
- 11:19was having a tough day out. Jack Rd.
- 11:22Johnny Miller and I just grinded out to catch.
- 11:24Alex Sheehan, 32K But I think, yeah, it's Canary Wharf.
- 11:30I would say it's the toughest part because there is a bit
- 11:34twisty and tiny. Some sections.
- 11:37Again, there's so much support, but then there are times where
- 11:40you wouldn't even guess you're in an hour.
- 11:42Like it's a bit, it's a bit annoying.
- 11:46And then the whole way down the last 6 miles is tough.
- 11:49That's where we kind of need a bit of a tailwind.
- 11:52So like if you look at the course profile, you kind of
- 11:54want, I mean, I'm, I'm, I love my data and stuff.
- 11:57You kind of want a wind from the South East, so it's like going
- 12:01up. So the last bit, the more the
- 12:03six miles you have it behind you.
- 12:06And I remember catching Alex and I've never seen someone an
- 12:09athlete so good with drinks like phenomenal, like he would hold
- 12:13it for a kilometer just from his triumph and backgrounds.
- 12:16And I was actually the closest I've ever been to Alex Sheehan a
- 12:19race considering I've racing over 6 kilometers of cross
- 12:22country before in tons of time, the closest I've ever been.
- 12:26But the atmosphere is just, yeah, it's I can't even describe
- 12:32it. And I think if, like James said,
- 12:35like guys have run 201, like it's a bit annoying because last
- 12:40year was a bit warmer. Everyone saw fantasies.
- 12:42London is maybe a tougher course, but it is such a quick
- 12:46course. Kitchen ran 201 on it basically
- 12:48solo and last year, like I didn't get around 204 national
- 12:54record. So it's a very quick course.
- 12:56Hopefully we get the right day. If we get like Jake, you're
- 12:58saying 10° before. I think it's going to be rap.
- 13:01It's it's so, so fast. But yeah, I'm quite excited
- 13:05because normally I get, I would say I would get quite a lot of
- 13:08the shouts, but I can't believe I'm like you were saying, you're
- 13:11not the fastest Jake on this podcast.
- 13:12But I'm not going to be the favorite Jake in London.
- 13:14So it's going to piss me off a little bit.
- 13:17At least you won't know yeah who they're shouting for.
- 13:20We'll just double up the support get get a whole load of Jakes
- 13:23shouted at us. And then you see him ran to
- 13:25Japan like on a sign. I'm like bollocks, not me.
- 13:30Well, you 2 are trying to blend the Jakes to your advantage.
- 13:33But I was going to ask is that is there a way we can
- 13:35differentiate? Because if I'm going to say,
- 13:37hey, Jake, I don't know who I'm going to.
- 13:41Have you got a nickname? Maybe like sometimes people call
- 13:46me Smithy, but that's just just my last name.
- 13:49I've quite a boring name like Jake Smith.
- 13:52So I don't know that's that's it really.
- 13:55I can take round to Japan if you want it, RTJ, whatever.
- 13:59I feel like that's probably surpassed my actual name now.
- 14:01I get shouted that more. Actually, during races I hear
- 14:04way more round to Japan than I do Jake, which is a little
- 14:08weird. But yeah, it's pretty cool.
- 14:10What will If you make the Tokyo start line on the weekend, what
- 14:14will the locals shout? They what would I say?
- 14:20They they love so in Japanese words instead of like, you know,
- 14:24we shout like let's go, come on, they shout fight.
- 14:28So it literally in Japanese. It's like with a Japanese
- 14:31accent. It will sound like fight though.
- 14:34Fight though. It's just the whole way you get
- 14:36people yelling at you fight though, and it doesn't literally
- 14:39mean like you're scrapping. But to them, I don't know how
- 14:41there's some mistranslation there that they think it means
- 14:45like keep going, like keep running, that kind of thing.
- 14:49Little do not know in English, it's like you want to scrap type
- 14:53of thing. But yeah, that gets you going.
- 14:55You hear a lot of that. And how does that differ to like
- 14:58Gambare? Or is it the same thing man?
- 15:01Yeah, pretty much exact same meaning.
- 15:04It has a bit of Japanese there. Where?
- 15:06Where's that come from, Ryan? From from marigami last year.
- 15:10I was, I was leaning into it like, oh, I could get a little
- 15:13tattooing in kanji here, but I never.
- 15:18Gambara. Yeah.
- 15:19You get Gambara and fight, though.
- 15:21They're like the classic teeth throughout.
- 15:24The atmosphere in Tokyo will be, I imagine, pretty insane as
- 15:27well, and warm. Yeah, actually pretty cool.
- 15:30It's I feel like the crowds are massive.
- 15:33I mean, I've never done London so it's hard to compare.
- 15:36But yeah, they love it just because the running coach is so
- 15:38big here that even sort of casuals like people with no
- 15:42interest in running, they will get up for it like with the
- 15:45Hakon Echiden and stuff. It's weird though that almost
- 15:49this university Echiden race relay race is actually bigger
- 15:54than Tokyo Marathon itself. Crazy.
- 15:56So like a Tokyo is huge, but just nothing compares to that.
- 16:01Like 100, What is it like 50 million people watching the
- 16:05Haqqani? I don't know how many watch
- 16:06Tokyo, but yeah, this should be a good few out on the street.
- 16:10Well, yeah, in London you'll have the BBC broadcast.
- 16:13Hopefully you'll you'll catch the airwaves there.
- 16:16I was thinking that there is a crazy world depending how how
- 16:20Japanese you want to attack the race, where you all go through
- 16:23the halfway split together. It could be a dangerous way to
- 16:28run it. Same question that I asked the
- 16:32Tim to you ran to Japan, Jake, kind of what was the process of
- 16:38you getting a start at London? How, when did you like first
- 16:42think of it as an option given you've kind of got races so
- 16:46easily at your disposal over there?
- 16:47What made you want to go to London?
- 16:50Well, The thing is, it's actually the only race that I've
- 16:53never been a get an entry into. I've managed to get into any
- 16:56other race I've ever wanted to, except my own local hometown
- 17:00race. But the last two years,
- 17:02actually, I've tried getting in. There was some weird rules last
- 17:06year. I was treated as a foreigner.
- 17:09So they were like, you can't get a British star because you're
- 17:12living in Japan. They're like, you've got to tick
- 17:14the foreigner entry box, which is like 2:06 or something.
- 17:19Like what is happening is like, I'm actually from London and I
- 17:22can't get a place in, yeah, my own hometown race, whereas Tokyo
- 17:26will happily give me one. So at that point I was nearly
- 17:29like, oh, like I'm sacking this off.
- 17:31I'm, I'm just going full Japanese.
- 17:33But luckily this year, last minute, actually, I think it was
- 17:37because a couple people pulled out and so I managed to get
- 17:41squeezed in like just before they announced it ends up
- 17:44getting, I don't know if you saw the entry list, but I got
- 17:46announced as Jack Barakla. In fact, maybe that's the
- 17:51nickname. I've got to be jacked from now
- 17:53on because that's apparently what the organizers think.
- 17:55I have, couldn't believe it, disrespect.
- 17:59I can't remember what website it was, I'll have to dig it out for
- 18:02you. I was looking for the like elite
- 18:04start list a few weeks ago and they had an FAQ section and in
- 18:11the FAQ section was is ran to Japan running?
- 18:15I was here. Let's go get the people talking.
- 18:20I guess logistically you've got it a bit tougher than Jake to
- 18:24commute to London. So when are you heading over
- 18:27back home? Yeah, especially with how well
- 18:31the Valencia Marathon went. I feel like travel I I don't do
- 18:35too well with the long distance travel.
- 18:37I think before Valencia it was Copenhagen and that's where I
- 18:41nearly lost my arm due to an infection.
- 18:44So yeah, I'm not going to. I'm a little concerned.
- 18:46I don't know how to play it, whether with Valencia I came out
- 18:5010 days early. So I was thinking nice and safe,
- 18:53like beat the jet lag, adjust all of that.
- 18:55But then almost like I'm now wondering, do I fly out
- 19:00literally the day before, like 2 days before, almost try and get
- 19:04my body to not even realise what's going on, just try and
- 19:07jump straight in Because I think I'm so set up in my like routine
- 19:10in Japan. I'm such a routine person.
- 19:13It's like I know exactly when I train, I know what I eat, I know
- 19:16like everything's kind of structured.
- 19:18So then it must be something about changing time zones
- 19:21changing like even the diet, like everything changes, but
- 19:25then it must just throw everything out of sync.
- 19:27So it's one of them where, yeah, I'm, I'm still sort of weighing
- 19:29up how I play it with travel, but hopefully I can, yeah,
- 19:33survive it this time. And.
- 19:35What about you, Jake? Are you going down a couple of
- 19:37days before you were in like the Elite Hotel or anything or?
- 19:40I normally go to see my girlfriend's parents house which
- 19:44is next to literally, well, how I describe.
- 19:46It's Stonehenge and I don't like staying in elite hotel until
- 19:51it's like the day before because like if Jake's there might
- 19:57change my mind a bit. But I feel like sometimes with
- 20:00athletes that I want to talk about on F1 football, like pets
- 20:05and stuff. But then when you go there
- 20:07sometimes in an elite hotel environment, it's just like, oh,
- 20:10what pace did you run last week? And I'm like, I just can't be
- 20:12arsed with that. And I think it like get to my
- 20:15head a little bit. So I never go until like they're
- 20:18like technical meeting on the Saturday and then stay in the
- 20:21hotel that night. But I will probably because from
- 20:25Cardiff it's, it's really easy, but I'll probably travelled to
- 20:28my girlfriend's parents which who live just outside like
- 20:32Salisbury area. So it's like, you know, a little
- 20:35train towards London. Try and wear a mask all through
- 20:40London because I reckon the illness rate will be quite high
- 20:44around London Marathon. But yeah, but then I think I
- 20:48have to do some stuff with, you know, the new DSM team.
- 20:51So they might want me there a few days earlier anyway.
- 20:56Yeah, it's it'd be good. I'm just, like you said, just
- 20:59hoping we have a good day, good weather day and excited to see,
- 21:02well, both of these guys now in London.
- 21:05But if both of them are coming earlier, I might go down a bit
- 21:08earlier. But if those two aren't staying
- 21:09going earlier, I will not be going earlier.
- 21:12That's that's all I'm saying. Nice.
- 21:15Well, Tim, we know that you're heading over a little bit early
- 21:18to get on the time zone with plenty of time.
- 21:20What's your travel plans look like?
- 21:22Take three, we'll see how we go. Heading this Friday to London.
- 21:29Nick has a house in Teddington, so myself and Liam Bowden will
- 21:34be based there for probably 8 weeks.
- 21:37Or the better part of we're entered in Bashir's half or
- 21:42Bashir's run in Ghent in Belgium.
- 21:44Yeah, about 10 days away. And then the plans to try and
- 21:48sneak up to the Asec's house in front remote, which you guys are
- 21:52now a bit more than me on seasons and stuff, but it could
- 21:55be a bit of like, I don't know if it'll be too cold or too
- 21:59snowy. So that's an idea, but if not,
- 22:03we'll be in Teddington the whole time.
- 22:05That's bushy, isn't it? That's the bushy.
- 22:07Yeah, yeah. Oh I'm, I'm actually going
- 22:11sports. I'll let you know, but I'm going
- 22:13there in like 3 weeks for like just for two days or something.
- 22:16Yeah, if you want. To meet for.
- 22:18A Yeah, let's get a coffee, go for a run, have a meal.
- 22:21So it that. 'D be great.
- 22:24So do you fly with Liam as well then?
- 22:26So Liam's the other Australian representative in the elite
- 22:29field, isn't he? Yeah.
- 22:30So we're flying together with, I can't remember which point it
- 22:35cut out before, but yeah, we've both been at Falls Creek
- 22:37together, we share rooms together.
- 22:39We were lucky enough to be in Tokyo together trying to get
- 22:43off, so know each other very well.
- 22:45And yeah, looking forward to the next 8 weeks.
- 22:49Yeah, nice. Well, typically it's been Brett
- 22:51and Jack representing Australia over in London.
- 22:54So now it's it's you and Liam this time around.
- 22:58So that'll be fun. Yeah, came for as I was like
- 23:02hinting out before, it's just like a whole new experience,
- 23:04like the majors. And what excites me about London
- 23:07is I don't know, like sure, running a time in a marathon
- 23:12scored in like London's a fast course, don't get me wrong, but
- 23:15it's just like the prestige of the race.
- 23:17Like it just feels special talking about it and even seeing
- 23:21the stylist and how stuck it is on both the men's and women's
- 23:25side. It's it feels like as an
- 23:28Australian an opportunity that doesn't come around very much
- 23:31and maybe something that we're very lucky that now have Sydney.
- 23:34But yeah, I'm really, really excited to take part in Mind It.
- 23:39Just on not mentioning Sydney, Jake Smith, I wonder if you can
- 23:43talk to this. Is there any chatter amongst
- 23:45European athletes with an appetite to do Sydney or is it
- 23:49kind of not really going there yet?
- 23:51Because it's the same sort of time as Europeans, isn't it?
- 23:54It's is it August time? Yeah.
- 23:58It's a shame because everyone over here, a lot of, a lot of, a
- 24:03lot of the London base I, I, well, I say I might get hate for
- 24:07this, but they all love a flat race.
- 24:10And then as soon as I heard Sydney and hills, I was, that's
- 24:13the first one I wanted to do. So I love a Hillier race.
- 24:17There hasn't been any talk about going over, which is a bit of a
- 24:21shame. I understand it is a far, far
- 24:24away, but then all these strings come over for months, like
- 24:27months and times do racism here, but it's it's, it's the same old
- 24:32races. The guys in the UK do Valencia
- 24:35half, Valencia Marathon, Valencia 10K.
- 24:37It's just if you're not in Valencia, there's no point.
- 24:40Like everyone goes to Valencia and it's a bit of a shame
- 24:43there's no no one else goes anywhere else, if that makes
- 24:47sense. They don't do, but I, I lucky
- 24:49you boy, where you both have just raced in different places
- 24:53in Japan. It's all different areas.
- 24:55Whereas it's got to a point in the UK where if you don't turn
- 24:58up to Valencia, you every race you do that's not Valencia.
- 25:03You'll say I could run a minute quicker than Valencia.
- 25:05It's almost got to that point and it's getting a bit negative.
- 25:07Almost no one wants to just go to these bloody.
- 25:10That's why I do park rents. I love a bloody park rent.
- 25:12No one that goes to these bloody silly old races and just runs
- 25:16hard. Everyone needs to like the
- 25:17perfect weather, the perfect temperature.
- 25:20So I doubt many people go to Sydney.
- 25:22The only probably people who go to Sydney is to collect the is
- 25:25it the seven medals or six medals to, you know, the all the
- 25:28majors? Yeah.
- 25:31So it's it's a bit of a shame, but yeah, it's on my bucket
- 25:35list. It'll be interesting for sure.
- 25:37I mean, it's only brand new as a major, isn't it?
- 25:39So perhaps over like the next 5 or 10 years, it'll become part
- 25:43of people's plans. But yeah, I wouldn't expect
- 25:46maybe initially everyone will jump to it.
- 25:50In terms of current form, what's been going on, Tim, you've just
- 25:53recently been to Japan yourself and raced to Maragami.
- 25:56You ran 6335 there in the half marathon.
- 25:59How did you find that as an experience?
- 26:01Snow beating around the Bush, They're like overall tough day.
- 26:07I put a really good month of training together before it, so
- 26:09it's one of those ones where you're like, you're almost
- 26:11scratching your head a little bit.
- 26:14So yeah, still trying to get to the bottom of that at the
- 26:16moment. Can't say too much yet on that,
- 26:20but I think we'll hopefully see a bit more out of me in Bashir's
- 26:24half. But it's been the first time in
- 26:26my career and I'm really happy to speak open about this.
- 26:30Where sometimes like the training, you're doing the work
- 26:34and then sometimes it just doesn't click.
- 26:36So going through that at the moment.
- 26:39But once again, I'm healthy and I'm really happy to be healthy
- 26:43because it was only a year ago had first major injury,
- 26:47fracturing sacrum. So I've got to remind myself of
- 26:50that. And you know, like, even though
- 26:52maybe I'm not PD shape, I'm really in terms of training not
- 26:57that far off. And it feels like if I can get
- 26:59things to click, I've still got 8 weeks I'm there and
- 27:02thereabouts. So that's what we're working on
- 27:05at the moment. Few form things and bits and
- 27:07pieces. And yeah, trying to almost put
- 27:10together more than the one puzzle piece of why marigami
- 27:15didn't go so good. And I don't expect Bashir's run
- 27:18to maybe be, let's say, PBI. Think I'm hoping to be somewhere
- 27:22along the lines of that, that it's a pretty unique spot and I
- 27:25enjoy the challenge of yeah, trying to get back to my best.
- 27:30How did you find the overall vibes and stuff of Marigoni?
- 27:33Was that your first time in Japan?
- 27:36I've, I've been there a fair bit, Jake.
- 27:38So like if anything, it was probably the most disappointing,
- 27:40I think just because I my PB is actually run there from two
- 27:44years ago and I just felt so different that day compared to
- 27:48this year. Like I went out at the same pace
- 27:50and it just felt like I've been shot through taking.
- 27:53So y'all have a good day or not so good day there.
- 27:58But love Japan. The winter races are just nuts.
- 28:02But yeah, Jake, I'll never run a marathon in the summer there
- 28:04again. That is hard.
- 28:08You just want to leave Japan. I'm I'm already planning out my
- 28:10summer. I want to hear up Australia
- 28:12actually, just about what, four months, I reckon, where it's
- 28:15unlivable in Japan, but at least, yeah, they may cut
- 28:18through winter. Just those, it's pretty much
- 28:21back to about weeks almost. You just got that train of like
- 28:2560 minute half marathon 6162. It's like, yeah, if you have a
- 28:29good day, you just jump on that. Then you see people actually pop
- 28:32off. But yeah, I know.
- 28:34You mean if you're feeling rough in one of those races, it's like
- 28:37especially how aggressive people start, it can end up being a
- 28:39painful day. There's always just bodies
- 28:41littering the course. Like even if you blow up, you
- 28:45know, there'll be a ton of Japanese guys blowing up so much
- 28:47worse just with how sort of yeah, all out they guys the all
- 28:51or nothing approach. Yeah, it's a pretty cool race to
- 28:55be a part of. And yeah, I'd like to.
- 28:58I think I've still got a little bit more I can squeeze out of
- 29:00myself there, so I'd love to get back to, yeah, maybe next year
- 29:03or so, or run Kobe as well. Jake and I loved that race.
- 29:08I think they've changed it now so it doesn't have the bridge
- 29:11anymore, but yeah, really cool man.
- 29:13Quicker. Yeah, yeah, yeah, a good start.
- 29:17Yeah, get over there for. Sure.
- 29:18Yeah. How did you plan for Tokyo in
- 29:21September, Tim, knowing it was going to be that hot?
- 29:24Like how could you even think about paces?
- 29:26Was it all just effort based? Yeah, great question.
- 29:30It was like purely effort based and I was doing sessions at like
- 29:36midday here which was getting close to 28 but the on the worst
- 29:41days. But the problem was there was no
- 29:43humidity so we did two blocks. I think I did 3 weeks in Cairns
- 29:4912 weeks out and then our pre departure camp was also in
- 29:52Cairns probably from close to let's say 3 weeks out from race
- 29:57day. I was doing saunas within a
- 30:00minute of finishing a run on the treadmill.
- 30:04So I did did just about everything we thought we could
- 30:07have, did precooling. That was massive, to be honest.
- 30:12And then we kind of just got in the race and our whole as a
- 30:15nation, we were just trying to, if anything, sit back and get
- 30:19the stragglers. And even that strategy, I
- 30:22learned a lot in the heat. You just don't get the time
- 30:25back. So we kind of went out pretty
- 30:27slow and I was expecting to feel good and you don't get the time
- 30:31back and you still feel bad. So it was, it was cool
- 30:34experience, but yeah, very happy to finish a point people that
- 30:38didn't. But yeah, I'd like to put the
- 30:42heat on the back burners for a bit, I think, with the marathon.
- 30:47Alluding to what Jake was just saying before Jake Smith about
- 30:50fast and flat marathons. It's nice to kind of get one of
- 30:53those ones on the about where the conditions aren't in your
- 30:56favor and it really kind of like pushes you psychologically.
- 31:00Yeah, yeah. I'll never forget the last two
- 31:03care of that marathon, like the marathon and everyone listening
- 31:07to this will easily be able to relate like your best day at the
- 31:09marathon to you, let's say your worst day or your hardest day.
- 31:12It's like a different sport and Tokyo felt a lot like that.
- 31:16And I can look back and laugh on it now, but it it just blows
- 31:19your mind. And staying on the current form,
- 31:23fame, Jake Smith, you've just gone sub 62 again for the first
- 31:27time in a while. Congratulations.
- 31:30Are you stoked with that? Yeah, it was, it's actually my
- 31:34second fastest time ever. So if you take away the 6030
- 31:39around, but I, I don't say shit myself with that.
- 31:42I felt like I was cheating back then.
- 31:43So I was 10 kilos later, I was, I was basically just a stick and
- 31:48I was doing it so unhealthily. So to actually run the time now
- 31:53with the healthiest body I've ever had, I will message you
- 31:56anyway after it because we went through 10K in 2858 and I'd only
- 32:03run 2846 like in the last three years since my, you know, my
- 32:08sacrum injury, my red ass and everything.
- 32:11I was running with Joe Wakefield and I was running with the boys
- 32:14who run 2740 the month before. And I just committed to it.
- 32:18And Wiggy looks like he was bloody walking.
- 32:20It was, it's just, it's just a horrible, horrible feeling when
- 32:23like you're coming down and they're stepping up.
- 32:25It's like that in between pace. But when I crossed that line, it
- 32:30was, yeah, it was like it was another big step forward, like
- 32:346147. And as soon as I finished, I
- 32:39already thought of how I could improve on that.
- 32:42So like my last five Ki didn't exactly slow down too much like
- 32:46other people slowed down a bit more than me, but I just needed
- 32:49to, I just need to put together a few more, like you said,
- 32:53training blocks. But the way I'm looking at it is
- 32:54making these small progress. So every race I start now, I'm
- 32:58making a small progress instead of beforehand when I was
- 33:01struggling, my food and everything, I'd make such large
- 33:04leaps. Maybe that was because I would
- 33:05drop a lot of weight or something, but it caused me to
- 33:08have constant injuries and illness.
- 33:10Whereas now it's like I'm just every race I'm doing just this
- 33:16little bit better and then I get I can recover.
- 33:19I don't know whether that's the the massive wine glass of babies
- 33:23the next day that helps me or my thought process, but it's yeah,
- 33:28it's going really well at the minute.
- 33:30So I'm very happy. Yeah, nice.
- 33:32Did you have a few Sangrias in Barcelona to celebrate?
- 33:35No, no, because we had to leave that evening.
- 33:38I don't recommend doing a race and leaving that evening ever
- 33:42again. So the next day I got home.
- 33:45I think I walked about 10 minutes that day, 15 minutes
- 33:50that day, had a 2 hour nap. I found the biggest wine glass I
- 33:53could and poured Terry's chocolate orange babies into it.
- 33:57My girlfriend had a wine next to me.
- 33:59I bought 40 Part 2 steaks for £40 because you know, red meat
- 34:03and stuff from the butchers. I was properly celebrating that
- 34:06evening. But yeah, it's.
- 34:08And then just back to the drawing board I guess.
- 34:10And another half in two and a bit weeks where after race
- 34:14against Wakefield again, which is going to be tough.
- 34:17But now it's it's another step forward.
- 34:19Did some testing yesterday. So the numbers in a very in a
- 34:21very good spot and I just need to stay just keep saying drew
- 34:26free. So that's that's my end.
- 34:29That testing you done, Did I read it right that you recorded
- 34:332.8 millimile at like 23 K an hour?
- 34:36No, not 23/20. It was so I deal with Danny
- 34:39Jones, so he works with Paula when she ran 215 so he can
- 34:44associate. It's three minute basis, 3
- 34:47minute intervals. You start 15K an hour, go up to
- 34:4923 K an hour and the 23 K an hour you're running a 236 K and
- 34:54you have to carry on for three minutes.
- 34:55So it's, it's tough. And last year I couldn't
- 34:58complete the 23 K an hour. I could only do a minute.
- 35:01But this year I completed the whole thing and I I almost
- 35:04thought about starting 24K an hour, but then it was like
- 35:07that's a 62nd 400. And my KPB is about that.
- 35:12And so I'm like, OK, there's not much point as well because the
- 35:15value you wouldn't get the same numbers.
- 35:17But it was like the numbers were it was like 20 K an hour.
- 35:20Monaptic was 1.8 at 19 was 1.3. At 20 was 1.8.
- 35:26At 21 was 2.8, at 22 was 4.3. So it's like, but then of course
- 35:34you have to look in my LT1 could be 1.21.3, my LT2 could be under
- 35:38like 2.72 point 6. I'm finding out.
- 35:42I'll let you know in the next podcast, but I'll let you know
- 35:44exactly my LT2LT1 scores. But the shift from last year.
- 35:49I just wanted to see what my numbers were.
- 35:53Unfortunately, I'll get like my what my VO2 in my running
- 35:57economy. But of course my running economy
- 35:59is my best thing. But it wasn't as good as when I
- 36:02was 55 kilos because it has to divide by your weight.
- 36:05And now I'm I'm a strong 67 kilos, but I have grown 1
- 36:09centimeter. I promise I'm 1.71100 and 71cm
- 36:15instead of 170. Maybe they just miscalculated,
- 36:18but my running economy won't be as good as when I was really
- 36:22like. But the actual numbers compared
- 36:24to when I was at my fittest are the same.
- 36:27So it's it's, it's getting there.
- 36:29It's really, it's getting there. And I like working.
- 36:31It's just to show that the training is working.
- 36:35But I'm very into double thresholds.
- 36:36So I like seeing just to make sure I get the right numbers if
- 36:40that makes sense and work the right zones.
- 36:42So what are you sorry? Do both of you do lactate and
- 36:47threshold and stuff? No.
- 36:49I just I do. I've we've dabbled in a little
- 36:52bit before, but I'd say there's not many Australian groups that
- 36:56do just yet. Like there's bits and pieces.
- 37:01I definitely think it's more practiced in Europe than
- 37:04Australia. Yeah.
- 37:06So I was wondering because it feels like back home everyone's
- 37:08talking about it. I don't think they've even
- 37:10discovered or know what lactate or a threshold even is over here
- 37:15is purely the old school like flog yourself in every session
- 37:20that on the floor if you haven't yeah, you're able to walk at the
- 37:23end. You've not gone hard enough, but
- 37:25it's always it's quite interesting then how I guess
- 37:28different the approach you're going to be like hearing you far
- 37:31away with the numbers. Yeah, I find it interesting, but
- 37:34I think for me, yeah, I I like the feeling of being absolutely
- 37:38fucked at the end of a session. I thought, I mean, it looks
- 37:41like, yeah, you do still actually hammer it sometimes.
- 37:43But yeah, for me it should purely pace effort.
- 37:47That's it. I think what I do is because of
- 37:51damage I did to my body a couple years ago, where I did probably
- 37:56I did completely overlook everything and overlook my
- 38:00body's health. So that's why they brought it in
- 38:03now purely to make sure I don't go back to that that way.
- 38:08And also because with the numbers it so you know, like for
- 38:12example, if you do one in the morning, one in the evening,
- 38:14your numbers can be a bit suppressed.
- 38:17So like on a Saturday, I'll do AVO 2 specific.
- 38:19So if my lactic number is low, it probably means I've under
- 38:23fueled the day before that day. So it kind of ensures I don't go
- 38:27back to what was happening before.
- 38:30That's more how I use it. But yeah, it's like I said, I'm
- 38:37such a geek with these numbers. I could bore you both the days
- 38:41and days about it. But then of course like every
- 38:45like in the Britain is just what, three or two hour flight
- 38:49from here. The whole training method up
- 38:50here is just latte, latte, latte, and I do see it, but I
- 38:55just use it almost for my personal health to make sure I
- 38:58don't go back, I don't go backwards, if that makes sense.
- 39:02That's probably a good call. Yeah, keep it controlled.
- 39:04It's true with these how in Europe it's like I was up doing
- 39:08some testing with Nomio up in Sweden and yeah, the the guy was
- 39:12asking me Lord, so like what are your lactates?
- 39:14What what you pasted you on this?
- 39:16I was like, mate, firstly, I've never stepped on a treadmill in
- 39:20the last five years. So secondly, I don't have a clue
- 39:23what my threshold pace is. And he was just mind blown, like
- 39:26they they couldn't understand. I guess it's so embedded in the
- 39:29like Scandinavian culture and pretty much it seems like Europe
- 39:32as well that everyone's now on it, that then he just he was
- 39:36just completely might. I just thought I was an absolute
- 39:38moron. I think just like how how I've
- 39:40been training. But I've got to say I was
- 39:43interested, like getting my numbers and stuff back.
- 39:45But yeah, maybe in the future. We said what did you do with
- 39:49them straight out the window? Yeah, yeah, Like these look
- 39:52great. All right.
- 39:54Time's absolutely flogged the next session.
- 39:58Tim, do you use heart rate a lot then to kind of control your
- 40:01sessions and stuff or how do you do it?
- 40:03Yeah, I train typically to like heart rate and I'll notice like
- 40:09one thing I noticed with mine is like I gauge fatigue also on my
- 40:14easy runs with it. And what I'll look for is it not
- 40:17actually getting up to my normal ranges if you like.
- 40:22And then I just use a wrist like Garmin, which isn't too
- 40:27accurate. But my thing is, if you use the
- 40:30same inaccurate sensor every day, there's some sort of truth
- 40:33to it. So yeah, pretty, I don't know if
- 40:36you call it old school or not, but yeah, I'll promptly rely off
- 40:40heart rate. And I've been using the same
- 40:42sensor so long that I can't have my own normative data that way.
- 40:48What kind of heart rate range is marathon effort then?
- 40:52Depending on the climate it can be.
- 40:55I noticed back home it'll be a little bit higher.
- 40:59Previous marathons, 165 to low one 70s and then back into the
- 41:05race. If I'm having a good one, I've,
- 41:07yeah, got the ability to go a bit higher.
- 41:11See that? That amazes me because for
- 41:13London last year, mine was, yeah, that was Outset.
- 41:16Mine is 178 for London last year.
- 41:19But it's just you just like, because I'm, I take all my heart
- 41:22rate as well and I find it absolutely fascinating.
- 41:24And I think Jake, me and you have very, very similar heart
- 41:27rates. I've noticed in races and stuff.
- 41:31But when I see like people like yourself and have like can hold
- 41:34165, it's the same as Dan Nash 165 per marathon.
- 41:37I'm just like no, I just, I can't comprehend it.
- 41:43But then again, like mine doesn't.
- 41:44Get up. Yeah, like I can't really get
- 41:47above 180. Like even this morning I think
- 41:49we did 8 by K that was like peaked at 181.
- 41:52So then we're still working pretty hard.
- 41:55And yeah, I'm not even sure I'd be able to get past 195 if I
- 41:58tried. Because yesterday I got to 199
- 42:02and I think I could maybe push over 2 hundreds, but then it's
- 42:06like like that's I just find it heart rate.
- 42:08So fascinating how everyone is so different, but then it's
- 42:12yeah, sorry, I, I, no, I like to talk about.
- 42:15That we had a go on our group that hit 2:15 and then another
- 42:19guy who like pretty much couldn't break 170.
- 42:22Both very good runners and whatnot, but it was like did
- 42:25just even the genetic difference between high rate?
- 42:29I don't know. Is there actually an answer for
- 42:31that? Yes.
- 42:32As to like how two people could be the exact same fitness, run
- 42:36the exact same marathon time, yet be operating at completely
- 42:39different heart rates just because of Physiology.
- 42:43As far as I'm aware, I'm pretty sure there's no link and it's
- 42:46completely irrelevant, but could be wrong.
- 42:50So that's why it's important to only ever don't don't compare
- 42:54your heart rates between training buddies.
- 42:56It's just looking at your own and your own zones.
- 42:59Yeah, I, I believe so. And to be honest, if I was
- 43:02probably being, oh, as best practice as I could be, I'd
- 43:06probably be taking lactates too, even if it was like a pre
- 43:09session, post session and mid session thing.
- 43:14Yeah, that's something to think about.
- 43:15Like I was tossing it up in December.
- 43:18The main thing for me is actually just the cost of the
- 43:20strips and like try to work out a cost effective way to do it.
- 43:24But once again, it's like we're this far in the sport, we
- 43:27probably should just bite the bullet and do it.
- 43:30I was going to move the conversation on a little bit if
- 43:33you guys are happy to. We've, we've got lost in a bit
- 43:36of detail there. But the next kind of thing I was
- 43:38going to speak about was just to kind of talk about the different
- 43:42coaching setups and different brand sponsors you each may
- 43:46have. So potentially, let's start with
- 43:49Japanese. Jake, are you still self coached
- 43:52and who's supporting you? I'm indeed, I'm uncoachable
- 43:57mate. No, no coach is taking me on.
- 44:01Yeah, so I've got Brooks very kindly sponsoring me and Post
- 44:08Tokyo got some pretty big changes.
- 44:11Again, got to say that for the YouTube channel.
- 44:14I apologise the no teasers here, but you just have to, yeah, keep
- 44:18an eye on the channel because actually I'd say Tokyo
- 44:21Marathon's big, but the changes that are going to happen after
- 44:26it's so much bigger than one race, like even London Marathon,
- 44:29I'd say it's a pretty game changing little set up change
- 44:36from I guess what I've been having the last year or so, two
- 44:39years. So I'm pretty excited for that.
- 44:41But yeah, currently up until now I've just been pretty much self
- 44:44coaching, looking at other runners and stuff like taking
- 44:48pieces from them. For last year's Tokyo Marathon,
- 44:51I literally copied to the tee like identically the old
- 44:55training plan from this like 1970s Japanese guy.
- 44:59And so I went back to it this year.
- 45:00I was like, it worked a treat last time.
- 45:02I've been following similar. I've been actually jumping in.
- 45:05That's where I'm at now on this training camp with one of the
- 45:08sort of company teams here. So I've been trying to recently
- 45:12like jump in with as many other groups as possible, like other
- 45:15people, because I find I just respond so well to like having
- 45:19training partners that I've tried to sort of more.
- 45:23Before it was like, very much, I'm going to do this, do this
- 45:26way. Whereas now I'm like, I don't
- 45:28really care what the session is. If I can do a session with a
- 45:31group and it's roughly people with similar ability or ideally
- 45:35better than me, then I'm going to pick that any day.
- 45:38So it's like just basically seeking out, yeah, faster
- 45:41runners than me to then drag me along.
- 45:45On Tokyo, do you think, is it Seguru Asako?
- 45:48Has he got any chance of winning on the weekend?
- 45:50That was Dean's fantasy pick. That would be a legendary
- 45:55hometown pool. I think winning though, I mean,
- 45:58to win Tokyo, you've got to be 202 basically, which I think is
- 46:04going to be a stretch when if, I mean Valencia, you just hit
- 46:06Thunder, what is it, 2:05, which is unreal.
- 46:11But then I think there's a couple other Japanese runners
- 46:14who I'd have backed ahead of him to win who've got a better
- 46:18chance than him. Actually, I think I was just
- 46:20listening to your pods earlier, but you know, the Osaka race.
- 46:25So the OR the guy who he ended up running like 209 or
- 46:30something, but he's run the equivalent.
- 46:31I think it's a 58 minute half marathon.
- 46:34And he's also, there's a current student in Japan who's also
- 46:39equivalent 58 minute half. Like obviously it's during these
- 46:42relay races. So it's not an official split,
- 46:44but he's yeah this like 20 year old who I think personally is
- 46:48going to run about 203 walks still at uni like mental, but
- 46:54he's neither of them are running.
- 46:55So I think, yeah, it's going to be pretty tough for a Japanese
- 46:57boy to win it. That's sick.
- 47:00And the, that Ethan Shuley guy, the American, he was the guy who
- 47:05was on your video the other week.
- 47:06That's the fellow you're referring to.
- 47:08Yeah. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 47:10I feel like now everyone's suddenly talking about him.
- 47:13He's, I featured him actually, we ran when he ran his 218 last
- 47:17year. We're in the same race.
- 47:19And even then he was talking about like sub 2/10.
- 47:22He was aiming for sub 210 in that race.
- 47:24He's so I said it straight after.
- 47:28I think he'll beat Connor Manse's American Record.
- 47:32I think he's the most talented runner I've ever seen easily.
- 47:35Like to basically retire from the sport and then come back and
- 47:41within, yeah, a year, under a year, he's gone from like 220
- 47:44shape 2207. And what's mad is he was on he
- 47:48was on sub 205 pace. That's just like absolute
- 47:52bullies on him to just commit to that.
- 47:54So he's actually one of the guys that I've been training with
- 47:57recently or trying to just hanging on for dear life at the
- 48:01back because yeah, he's like crazy talent.
- 48:05Fair play. And Tim, what's your set up in
- 48:07terms of sponsorship and support?
- 48:09Then let's see the top you had on earlier.
- 48:12Yeah, I'm running for ASICS. And so, yeah, that's as of
- 48:17January this year for head to toe, which I'm pretty excited
- 48:20about and I guess most excited for the European house and
- 48:24things like that. I do have this dream one day.
- 48:28I don't know if ASICS athletes can do it, but they do have.
- 48:30I think it's a JoJo camp in Kenya.
- 48:33I would love to get to Kenya one day, but no, I can't.
- 48:37That's not for another day. But yeah, loving the shoes,
- 48:42loving trying the different things and giving feedback on
- 48:45prototypes. I probably similar to Jake in
- 48:48that sense. I could bore you all day with
- 48:50shoes and all that stuff. But yes, based in Brisbane, Gold
- 48:55Coast based running group and coach.
- 48:57So I kind of, I guess correlation get sessions sent
- 49:03through and then link up with a few guys in Brisbane, mainly
- 49:07Liam Boone. And then every other day I'll
- 49:09just run kind of by myself here. You guys never do anything with
- 49:16like Ryan Gregson and Callum Davis and Demlot.
- 49:19One day a week. So we'll all kind of join forces
- 49:23together for our track Tuesday. And it's been good we've been
- 49:28able to do that like over the last few years I'd say.
- 49:32Like I wasn't doing that. We had bits and pieces, kind of
- 49:36a load of the shock and there's not enough runners here to
- 49:39really do that. We may as well all work together
- 49:41and we're all under the same management now, which is great.
- 49:44And it's funny how we've got everything from like 1500 to
- 49:49marathon in this Tuesday group, so everyone can kind of pull a
- 49:53turn at different reps and it's really quite fun.
- 49:57And it's my worst day of the week.
- 49:59I hate it. It's my weakness, so it's nice
- 50:01to have people pull me through. With BM with R6, do the mega
- 50:05blast have a space in your rotation or is it all super
- 50:08blast? Dude, they're, they're actually
- 50:11that good. I'm considering trying to take
- 50:13them off my feet. I don't feel the ground.
- 50:16I did 2 hours 40 I think on Sunday and you just, you don't
- 50:20even pull up sore and that's like concrete the whole week.
- 50:23So it, it's the craziest shoe I've ever worn.
- 50:27It's the only show I've ever worn as a jogger that I've
- 50:30considered it being like too good.
- 50:33So I have jumped back into Super Blast 2 a bit recently.
- 50:38They're also great shoe, but just a little bit firmer.
- 50:42Just trying to almost, yeah, beat the legs up a little bit.
- 50:46I understand that we're going to need a bit of that for the
- 50:50marathon. And I'm, I just remember my
- 50:53first marathon build, like the way I felt even before Frankfurt
- 50:56when I didn't have Mega Blasts. And yeah, I do like into the end
- 51:00of a long run feeling something so great.
- 51:03True though. Nice.
- 51:05Thank you. And Jake, you're with Team Nike.
- 51:09Yes, T Nike and the TSM, Funny, it's not TSM firm and next team.
- 51:18They've changed names from the NN running team.
- 51:21They've changed those sponsors when I was sponsored by the
- 51:25Huawei. So if we go for runs, I keep
- 51:29the, every kilometer, there's an American guy who tells you the
- 51:32pace you're on, your heart rate and everything very out loud.
- 51:35And I'm going to leave it on for London Marathon.
- 51:37So Jake, just beware, you'll be hearing that for 42 kilometers.
- 51:43Yeah. And I get, I basically just, I
- 51:46have to, I guess it's the same between like you just have to or
- 51:49the same as you have to wear pure Nike gear.
- 51:53You can't really wear other outfits.
- 51:57The only outfits you're out to wear.
- 51:58I would like if you go on a night out and you want to wear
- 52:00some, I don't know what age, not aging last bit poor, but another
- 52:05brand. They can't be sports brands.
- 52:09And yeah, it's going it's going well.
- 52:11I think I'm in my 4th or 5th year with both and seeing big
- 52:18progress. Unfortunately, they really
- 52:20helped me the last few years. So it's it's been really good.
- 52:25Was there much of an overhaul and when the sponsorship changed
- 52:27from NN or did it relatively remain the same?
- 52:31No, so we have the watch went from chorus to Huawei.
- 52:35The Morton has stayed and and any off is completely gone
- 52:40because any off was the big factor.
- 52:42I think DSM there are they are quite a big cycling team as
- 52:46well. So it's a team after sporting
- 52:48the tour. Now there's there's still some
- 52:52smaller brands I just can't get in my head.
- 52:54So like for example, you know, keep choking just released that
- 52:57running app. So yeah, so it's like it's every
- 53:03day I look up and I see someone else was sponsored by and I've
- 53:06never even heard of them, which is a can be a blessing.
- 53:09But you kind of want the stuff. Yeah, I'm still getting my head
- 53:12around it. And you get all the new kits.
- 53:16I'm a bit jealous because I've all dressed a complete black kit
- 53:21and I had to bring Mark Scott's bag over from Barcelona to send
- 53:25to him and he has all the different colours.
- 53:27So I need I'm going to send in a bit of a complaint so hopefully
- 53:32I'll get some more stuff. I did notice in Barcelona you're
- 53:36in the different singlet. Is that because you're like the
- 53:39the DSM group rather than just the pure Nike group?
- 53:43Yes, that is the DSM. They are changing colors like
- 53:47they're going to like because it is a bit dull.
- 53:50It's just it's just white like is like, yeah, it's not very
- 53:53nice. And they are creating a specific
- 53:59different color maybe for tote. They might actually be.
- 54:01There's a couple of guys in Tokyo this weekend.
- 54:03It might be done. But then but they said around
- 54:07March, April. Yeah.
- 54:09And we'll just well, I'm almost sometimes a surprise to you boys
- 54:13when you see something come out in the DSM some.
- 54:16Oh, thanks for letting me know. But yeah, it's it's good fun.
- 54:21It is good fun. And your coach and settle.
- 54:25It's with Gavin and Joe Pavey. So Joe Pavey was a five time
- 54:31Olympian. She won the European gold in
- 54:342014 like 10 months after being pregnant at 42 or something.
- 54:40So I'm my favorite training partner is Ines Fitzgerald.
- 54:44I do have to bring my A game when I train with that girl, but
- 54:48I go back every like once a month because they're based in
- 54:52Exeter because I have a house in Cardiff.
- 54:54So it's like hopefully I'll do some runs with Dan Nash here.
- 54:59And I think you boys have a bit. I don't want to be rude to the
- 55:03the Welsh runners, but I think you boys.
- 55:04So my thoughts just on me, you boys have a lot more quality of
- 55:07training partners than I do here over here.
- 55:11And so it is a case of just absolutely a lot of solo
- 55:18training. But I don't mind that.
- 55:19And then it's quite nice when I go back to Excel, have Gav on
- 55:21the bike. So it works really really well.
- 55:26That's a nice transition into training because I was going to
- 55:29just ask kind of where everyone's training is up to
- 55:31now. Maybe just from a point of view
- 55:33of like what mileage looks like. And then would you look at
- 55:38peaking that mileage? Like are you going to increase
- 55:41from here towards the race or is everyone got a pretty decent
- 55:44training load now? We'll start with Tim.
- 55:48So I'm just quickly flicking up a strider.
- 55:50It's pretty funny. I couldn't even tell you what I
- 55:52did 7 days ago. Mileage has been pretty good.
- 55:56I had biggest week of my last 12 on the week just gone, which was
- 56:01pretty much spot on 200. I'm rolling the Tuesday workout
- 56:07that I mentioned and then last week was my first marathon
- 56:11workout which didn't get a plan. One day guess just kind of
- 56:17wasn't really ready for it and went out at a pace that we
- 56:20thought was going to be OK and it just wasn't.
- 56:22So I actually pulled the pin. It was 6 by 3K, only did 4.
- 56:27I got the same session this week.
- 56:28So in a sense it's like we've got a week in the legs.
- 56:32Probably a bit more ready now to tackle it and even see probably
- 56:36just need to move the goal posts a bit further back than what I
- 56:39thought by a few seconds, see how this half marathon goes.
- 56:43And then yeah, there's a bit to like, like mileage is there?
- 56:46I'm not that far off. Just feels like we got 8 weeks
- 56:50to try and find the key to get things to click.
- 56:55Sitting at 200 now, would you look to increase that between
- 56:59now and race day or you're kind of happy there?
- 57:01I don't. I feel like my body responds
- 57:03quite well to the mileage. There is a point like I don't
- 57:07know what I didn't really explored much above 220.
- 57:10I think before Frankfurt I might have done one week in Labigno at
- 57:16I'd have to look back to be honest, but I'd say 2:30 plus
- 57:19for one week all I was doing was eating, sleeping and running.
- 57:25So having this similar opportunity in London, I can't
- 57:29rule it out. And if the body's feeling up to
- 57:31it, I'd like to pick things up a bit.
- 57:33And once again, I don't want to lose quality in doing that.
- 57:37So that's a big indicator for me is like quality of training's
- 57:40got to stay the same, or ideally in my case, now get a bit
- 57:43better. And then if I can do that, then
- 57:46yeah, pick up knowledge of it. And then how does your sessions
- 57:52look like? What days are you doing them on?
- 57:56The marathon ones. Just your intensity throughout
- 57:59the week. Do you doing the kind of track
- 58:02stuff on a Tuesday and then will you do a Friday or a Saturday
- 58:05session? Yeah, exactly right.
- 58:07And so, yeah, track Tuesday or interval reps pretty much
- 58:11probably nothing over a mile. I assume marathon workouts up to
- 58:1825, surely not much more than that.
- 58:20I hope on a Friday and then depending on like the week, I
- 58:26don't mind doing a bit of stuff on a Sunday as well.
- 58:29So in the middle of a long run or at the end of it, that'll
- 58:33always be the marathon effort. So I've only done one, a lot of
- 58:36that already. I think I had 2 1/2 hours with
- 58:39the last 30 minutes, like a build from three 40s to 3/10.
- 58:45So just things where you kind of start to try and roll a bit on
- 58:48tired legs that might be fortnightly, something like
- 58:52that. Nice, sounds like you're in a
- 58:56good position for 9 to 8 weeks out.
- 59:00Yeah, happy with it. And like I said, it's it's a
- 59:03tricky 1. I feel like it's not necessarily
- 59:06a time thing that's going to unlock this door.
- 59:10It's probably the best analogy I've got.
- 59:13But yeah, I'm excited by the challenge to try and find the
- 59:16key and we got more than enough time to try and do that.
- 59:19So yeah, looking forward to. It run to Japan.
- 59:24How's your mileage looking? Quite polarizing, I think.
- 59:29Yeah, I was coming on here as the slowest PBS.
- 59:32I thought, at least there's one thing I know I've got in the
- 59:34bank. I'll be the highest mileage,
- 59:36man. I'm I'm currently sitting at, I
- 59:39think it was 77 K last week. I think my lowest maybe ever
- 59:45since coming to Japan, probably at least the lowest in the last
- 59:48year I reckon. So yeah, slightly different
- 59:52compared to the usual like 252 sixties.
- 59:55It's been a fair drop. But hopefully, yeah, bounce back
- 1:00:00from this little knee niggle and then the plan is.
- 1:00:04Yeah, I think I can. I find it almost the most comfy
- 1:00:08is around 26250 especially before I went higher and I will
- 1:00:15I think go back up to sort of two 80s and eventually I want to
- 1:00:18get to like 3 hundreds. But since recently the the it's
- 1:00:25it's the way to go. It's the logical step.
- 1:00:27Obviously you you must say. You're just going to have to die
- 1:00:32on that hill, aren't you? Yeah, the the thing recently,
- 1:00:36because I've been training with these like quality runners, the
- 1:00:40actual session like intensity stuff's gone up so much.
- 1:00:44Like whereas before my like half marathon pay sessions threshold
- 1:00:48in a way would be like 3 minutes, 305, now it's like 255.
- 1:00:52Like with this group that I feel like to try and survive those
- 1:00:56sessions, I had to cut it back a little bit, this block, focus on
- 1:01:00my sort of speed, which is, yeah, obviously my weakness.
- 1:01:03And then I think always sort of happens, like getting used to
- 1:01:06the quality's the hardest bit. And then it's once a body clicks
- 1:01:09on that, then I try and sort of just nudge up the volume a
- 1:01:12little bit. Because for me it's tends to be
- 1:01:14just the more volume I can survive while still maintaining
- 1:01:19quality. Like basically like what Tim
- 1:01:20said, once you start losing the session quality, then it's just
- 1:01:23waste. Like it's pointless junk mileage
- 1:01:26and you're killing the the actual gains there.
- 1:01:29But if you can still hit the session quality that I feel like
- 1:01:33more mileage around, that is always going to be better.
- 1:01:37Yeah, I did notice you'd kind of dropped a little bit from the
- 1:01:39dizzy heights of 300, but it does seem like you, as you say
- 1:01:43you you're working a little bit harder with this protein.
- 1:01:47Yeah, yeah, sympathetically low two 50s this, but.
- 1:01:51How does the body feel after 75K by the way?
- 1:01:54If you just like crawling the walls all of last week.
- 1:01:57But I tell you, I feel so much more banged up of 75 K than I
- 1:02:02did of 300 KS. It's like my body just doesn't
- 1:02:05know what is going on. Like, yeah, just every little
- 1:02:10ache and pain. It's almost, I always feel like
- 1:02:13it's as if someone was to go from nothing to 40 KA day.
- 1:02:17It's the same kind of reaction that my body's had going from 40
- 1:02:20to 0. So that's almost the biggest
- 1:02:23challenge coming back is trying to not get some other little
- 1:02:27niggle and stuff because when I'm in that routine, that
- 1:02:29homeostasis, that's when I feel the most good in a way.
- 1:02:34Like I'm tired, obviously running 250 go a week, but it's
- 1:02:37a good level of tired. It's like sort of normal, yeah,
- 1:02:41manageable level fatigue. Whereas now it's like, yeah, I
- 1:02:44feel rough. I feel like I've got a whole lot
- 1:02:46of extra energy. Today I went for a three hour
- 1:02:49walk to try and replace some of that mileage.
- 1:02:52I did the same yesterday, so yeah, you got to get it in
- 1:02:57somehow. Shit.
- 1:02:58Well, what does the rest of the week look like if in in a good
- 1:03:02scenario? So I've I've realised that the
- 1:03:05so I'm fine that walking about all of that, no pain, but it
- 1:03:08seems to be load related. It's like I was trying to come
- 1:03:11back and do like double s, like sort of normal, like some
- 1:03:15slightly shorter double s. Now I'm just OK one run a day,
- 1:03:19literally jogging. So today was 8K, survive that
- 1:03:23without any pain. Tomorrow probably 10, and then
- 1:03:27the big thing's going to be on Thursday.
- 1:03:29So obviously racing Sunday. On Thursday I'm going to try a
- 1:03:34session, like a very light session, but some few K reps at
- 1:03:38marathon pace because I've not done any session for the last 10
- 1:03:42days or something since that 30K that screwed me up.
- 1:03:46And basically, if I can survive that, get through no pain, then
- 1:03:49I'll race Tokyo. So it's pretty much, yeah, I'll
- 1:03:51make the call pretty late, but for me it's like London's the
- 1:03:56main goal. I think whatever I run at Tokyo,
- 1:03:59I like to think I'll go quicker at London, just another couple
- 1:04:03extra months training, getting some yeah, group training
- 1:04:06sessions, hopefully level up more.
- 1:04:08So Tokyo, though it'd be nice to just, yeah, bank a little PB to
- 1:04:11start with. It's funny isn't it, because
- 1:04:13fitness takes weeks to leave but confidence goes away straight
- 1:04:18away. Yeah, yeah, 100%.
- 1:04:21You sure? You, I'm not going to have lost
- 1:04:22any fitness, but it's that sharpness that like you can
- 1:04:26throw you off completely. Like you get out of that rhythm
- 1:04:29and hopefully it comes out a bit of race.
- 1:04:31Adrenaline should do the trick I guess.
- 1:04:34And Jake Smith, then where's your mileage at and do you plan
- 1:04:37to do anything different from where you are now?
- 1:04:40I was in Montegoro, a hit. So in January I did a bit of
- 1:04:44training camp. I hit 220 K, That was my biggest
- 1:04:47week. Last week was and lower because
- 1:04:52like I had a the rest day on the Monday the fall.
- 1:04:54I always have a rest day the day after a race, no matter what
- 1:04:57sort of race it is. I don't know why I prefer that
- 1:05:02and then building back. So I want to, I've already said
- 1:05:07to my coach that it was like 154 K last week.
- 1:05:10I want to I want to keep above the 200 K's a week, but every
- 1:05:15other week I'm not allowed to run on the Monday.
- 1:05:20So it has to be just a cross training day.
- 1:05:23So I still do like 2 on top. Say if I do 200 and 210 KA week,
- 1:05:28it'll still be I'll probably put in two cross training sessions,
- 1:05:32not sessions but like you know, easy a week and it's just
- 1:05:38basically it's like a double threshold on Tuesday, a marathon
- 1:05:41specific on Thursday and more VO2 based Saturday.
- 1:05:45I kind of the way my coach likes me to train his marathon guys,
- 1:05:50like a 10K guy, he likes me to get that speed work in.
- 1:05:56And I always find when I let that go, I don't really enjoy it
- 1:06:00as much because it's a session you're allowed to really hurt
- 1:06:02yourself. But it's like it's, again, it's
- 1:06:05the same thing for me. It's just keeping it really,
- 1:06:08really. I can't do anywhere near what
- 1:06:11ran to Japan's mileage does. I just, I just, I can't like, I
- 1:06:16just can't put into words how I can't physically see how he does
- 1:06:20it. I just have so much.
- 1:06:22I just find it fascinating. But yeah, it's I'm not allowed
- 1:06:27to go over. That was one of the question I
- 1:06:29wanted to ask if you guys go over distance from marathon
- 1:06:33training and the coach doesn't want me to do it this, but I was
- 1:06:36asking whether I should. I see people do it.
- 1:06:38So like A45K run, but I don't think I will do in this training
- 1:06:43block. So it's literally very similar
- 1:06:46to Tim, like 200 to 210. Maybe push a bit more on the
- 1:06:50peak weeks, keep the cross training in.
- 1:06:53I love my gym sessions. So two of them are weekends, a
- 1:06:58lot of two hour naps a day. That's that's the way forward.
- 1:07:03So is your 200 plus cross train and then or are you factoring
- 1:07:06the cross training? So no.
- 1:07:07So 200 plus, but I mean like in terms of again, probably the
- 1:07:12boring statistic, my heart is like 1/15, 1:20.
- 1:07:15So if in Barcelona I held my heart rate 184, me doing 45
- 1:07:21minutes at 1:15 is is isn't going to really it's just
- 1:07:25basically just the way I do it is just, I don't know, it almost
- 1:07:29feel it almost helps my legs a little bit.
- 1:07:31So I'm so into I bet you guys are the same like Jake was
- 1:07:33saying when he's gone down to 70 KS legs more battered.
- 1:07:37If I take away a couple of those runs and just do singles, I get
- 1:07:40this almost the same sensation unless it's for a race.
- 1:07:44It's just to keep that schedule. And I have like, I don't know if
- 1:07:47you guys have ever watched it. I have like ATV screen in front
- 1:07:50of it. I just watched shameless.
- 1:07:51It's a it's a very it's a weird old show.
- 1:07:54So just put that on and yeah, it's it's good fun.
- 1:08:00It's good fun. How many hours you topping off
- 1:08:02on the cross trainer then? Oh, so be.
- 1:08:05So if it's say, if it's two times, it'll be an hour and a
- 1:08:08half, two hours. So I'll be 45 minutes a session
- 1:08:11or an hour and maybe I might do a few more treadmill runs just
- 1:08:16in case London's a bit warmer. I'm just so we get a bit more of
- 1:08:20that and I guess because in the garage, you know, it gets a bit
- 1:08:24hotter in it anyway. But that's yeah, that's, that's
- 1:08:29the way forward. Just keep plugging those mile,
- 1:08:33those kilometers together. Nice.
- 1:08:36Well, before I move us on to the outro section, have you guys got
- 1:08:40any burning questions for each other?
- 1:08:43Have we covered hobbies? Outsider running.
- 1:08:49Has anyone mentioned how you guys have time?
- 1:08:51Yeah, old start since I've brought it up.
- 1:08:54I love the Brisbane Roar and my mates, he'll be listening to
- 1:08:57this, he'll be laughing. So it's like the it's called the
- 1:09:02A league District Soccer League. And I follow the Brisbane Roar
- 1:09:06for my whole life. So down the bottom of the ladder
- 1:09:09every year and 3000 people go and it's terrible.
- 1:09:12And I put my heart and soul into following that team, and that's
- 1:09:16what I do outside of running. Do you not get the joy in the
- 1:09:19success of the Lions though? I've had to because the roar is
- 1:09:23just so bad that like, yeah, it'd be it's almost a bit of
- 1:09:28torture because you go like the whole city is brought together
- 1:09:31by the Lions and it's been what, two years in a row?
- 1:09:33We've had even multiple grand finals, almost public holiday
- 1:09:39worthy. Like the streets are closed and
- 1:09:41you're just like, what could be, but it'll never be.
- 1:09:45So do the role play like one league lower or something?
- 1:09:49Oh, sorry, it's different. So the Lions are AFL and then
- 1:09:54the raw like soccer round ball game.
- 1:09:58But yeah, the Australian Football League or the AFL,
- 1:10:01yeah, we're doing really well in that at the moment.
- 1:10:03So I guess I just watch that with the rest of Brisbane who
- 1:10:06love it. Right now, Jake Smith has a
- 1:10:11rather obscure soccer team in comparison to most in Redding FC
- 1:10:16soccer. We're not calling you soccer,
- 1:10:21Ryan. You're better than that, mate.
- 1:10:22Come on. Yeah, I saw.
- 1:10:24I support Reading, but I go, so I went last Tuesday.
- 1:10:27I go to Tuesday night Cardiff City games with there's a few of
- 1:10:30us who go. My favorite sports competition
- 1:10:33is on at at the minute it's the Six Nations.
- 1:10:36I absolutely love it. I went and watched.
- 1:10:39I loved one Wales get batted, I actually loved that.
- 1:10:43So I went to three out of the four autumn internationals last
- 1:10:46year and I missed the game. They beat Japan in which I'm
- 1:10:49very happy, but they got, they lost 73 nil to South Africa.
- 1:10:54I'm a Reading FC fan but our fans are 1516 year olds who
- 1:10:59probably carry knives and thinks they can take on the world's and
- 1:11:03then as soon as they go outside the stadium they are scared
- 1:11:05shitness. Basically that's the fan base.
- 1:11:09And on top of the other things. I do Tuolingo every morning for
- 1:11:13Spanish and I collect Pokémon cards.
- 1:11:16So that's not that's that's me, that's me at the minute.
- 1:11:20I'm getting a bit jealous of how much money Jakob has spent on
- 1:11:25total cars, so I don't have that amount I can spend otherwise I'm
- 1:11:30my girlfriend. Might break up with me, but
- 1:11:33yeah, yeah. You see, didn't Jake Paul just
- 1:11:37like auction one off for like $15 million or something?
- 1:11:41It's yeah, I mean they have a lot more money than I.
- 1:11:44It's just like it's the old Gen. cards now.
- 1:11:46It's like they there's all these new cards, which again, it might
- 1:11:51be huge in Japan, but there's all these new J parts, which is
- 1:11:53don't look proper. They've come up with these
- 1:11:55random ones and everyone wants the old ones like, and he's
- 1:12:00yeah, he's yeah, yeah, exactly. So he, yeah, So but there's none
- 1:12:04of those anymore. But then it's like you go to a
- 1:12:07store and you buy. So for, for those types, you
- 1:12:10have to spend £10 on a pack, whereas these new packs like 6-7
- 1:12:14quid just because they're worth more.
- 1:12:18So yeah, I do enjoy doing that, but also on Reading, Reading are
- 1:12:22in League 1. So we're not We're not.
- 1:12:24It gets to a point, I don't know if you get it in where you watch
- 1:12:26your sport and you're like I I definitely if I spent a year of
- 1:12:29trying, I could play for that team like it is shambles.
- 1:12:32Yeah, what I'll have to do, maybe in Teddington because I
- 1:12:36bought all the A league on my phone and stuff because it's not
- 1:12:40really on telly. It's that bad.
- 1:12:41You can't even like the pups. Don't put it on.
- 1:12:45I'll have to show you a game and a few clips and I think it's non
- 1:12:49league football. Like that's what we're working.
- 1:12:52But that's the best, that's the best football to go to.
- 1:12:55Like I've been to like Yeovil Town and stuff with my dad.
- 1:12:57And it's like, you know, the fans are like right behind the
- 1:13:00keeper, sending him abuse, throwing, not throwing stuff a
- 1:13:03bit and just, But that's proper football where it's like, I'm
- 1:13:07watching like the Champions League's all right.
- 1:13:08But I was watching like, so who I watched last week.
- 1:13:11But it was just, you know, they they, you know, when they always
- 1:13:14say like I, I don't, I think Jake used for Arsenal.
- 1:13:16But you know, they always say, like United against Chelsea are
- 1:13:19it's going to be a great game. Nil, nil, draw.
- 1:13:21And it's just like, yeah, great, great.
- 1:13:23Why have I done this? Yeah.
- 1:13:25Let me just ride you. We have just destroyed Spurs,
- 1:13:28for one, an absolute banger of a result.
- 1:13:31And this is our year. But it's true.
- 1:13:33The other teams, yeah, it's all shit.
- 1:13:36Now one of my best mates supports Arsenal and I've, I've
- 1:13:39always liked Arsenal, but I've never wanted them not to win the
- 1:13:41league because of the, the stuff he's putting into the chat.
- 1:13:45So I'm, yeah. But it's they're doing very
- 1:13:49well, very, very well. I feel like everyone's hoping or
- 1:13:53praying on a downfall this year. Yeah, I guess because Arsenal
- 1:13:57fans give it so much chat that it's like, but now this year is
- 1:14:01our year. It's different this time.
- 1:14:03It's our testimony is insufferable.
- 1:14:06Oh he's bloody good though. What a guy.
- 1:14:10Are you going to try and go to a game when you're back?
- 1:14:14I went over Christmas because my dad's actually got season
- 1:14:18tickets, so I'll try. And yeah, if it lines out.
- 1:14:21I guess it depends how long I'm back in London, but that's
- 1:14:23always on the checklist when I head home.
- 1:14:26Have you checked post London Marathon?
- 1:14:28Go straight to the Emirates. Have you checked if they're
- 1:14:30playing on the? Oh, shit, yeah, I need to see
- 1:14:32that. That could be a big one.
- 1:14:33Yeah, I need to have a look at you.
- 1:14:35If I'm not in the medical tent, that is.
- 1:14:37I've always got to factor that in.
- 1:14:38Post marathon, I'm going to be out of action for at least four
- 1:14:42hours. You could see the bottling
- 1:14:45happen in person. That'll be good.
- 1:14:46Wouldn't. It.
- 1:14:48Oh no, we'll have won it by then.
- 1:14:49There's no point even going. The league will be wrapped up.
- 1:14:53Do you think they'll do the treble?
- 1:14:54That's the question. The Champions League won in the
- 1:14:57League Cup as well, or FA Cup. We we're going straight past
- 1:15:00Premier League. It's like that.
- 1:15:01That's done. It's going big all the way.
- 1:15:04I wanted us to kind of race or if if we were to be stood on the
- 1:15:09start line tomorrow, how would you feel out of 100%?
- 1:15:13And then we'll take this score into the next episode.
- 1:15:16Say we say 60% now because training has been shit or we're
- 1:15:19fatigued and hopefully we can we can drive it or episode on
- 1:15:23episode. So how we feeling out of 100%
- 1:15:26right now? Who wants to start?
- 1:15:30You got a new guy. I feel like, I think after
- 1:15:34Barcelona last week, I feel in a very good position.
- 1:15:37I just need couple of the long runs.
- 1:15:42And I think like, of course, you know, you can do those
- 1:15:44comparisons, but I think like a 61 high half does can get me
- 1:15:49that 2 or 9. I really won.
- 1:15:52But it's just I, I just need to, I, I need to get back on to
- 1:15:55working with Charles again. I think that was a bit in my
- 1:15:58downfall in London last year, especially running with Alex and
- 1:16:01just seeing how good triathletes are at their drinks and
- 1:16:06everything. I would say I'm going to give it
- 1:16:10a big, a big on the way for, I'll say like 87%.
- 1:16:16I'll give it a random number. That's a solid start.
- 1:16:20Yeah, I'm happy. I'm happy.
- 1:16:22Good, good. I can jump in next if you want
- 1:16:26off a similar basis. I'd say my feelings going
- 1:16:29alright. I haven't had too many issues
- 1:16:31that front yet. I'd say the biggest ones
- 1:16:34confidence. But then the actually way that
- 1:16:36can work in your favour is like if you have a good result all of
- 1:16:39a sudden, then you know, that's all the way back up there.
- 1:16:44And then I'd probably like to be a bit further along on the the
- 1:16:48shorter stuff, just feeling a bit snappier.
- 1:16:50And once again, it's probably tied in with confidence in the
- 1:16:53half marathon and even just having a a better result as my
- 1:16:57previous race. So I'll go 78%.
- 1:17:01I'm feeling a lot better actually over the long stuff.
- 1:17:04Like I'm not scared of the marathon, I'm scared of the pace
- 1:17:07at the moment and like how I'm not sure how the body would go
- 1:17:09over the half and all that stuff.
- 1:17:12So yeah, 78. I feel like if we were talking
- 1:17:16literally tomorrow, what percentage now I'm about a three
- 1:17:21because I think AA10K jog seems like a bit of a challenge.
- 1:17:26That's an intimidating thought right now, but I think hopefully
- 1:17:31the works banked from this whole block that whether or not I run
- 1:17:35Tokyo, I think one week off I'd still keep all that fitness
- 1:17:39pretty much. And I'd say yeah, if you'd asked
- 1:17:41me a week ago, my weirdly enough this time I fill up my top ends
- 1:17:47easily the best it's ever been. Like I'd PB over 15105 K, 10K
- 1:17:52whatever half marathon. It's actually the longest stuff
- 1:17:54where so I've not done a single long run this entire block.
- 1:17:58My last long run was actually November.
- 1:18:00So yeah, the longest I ran in one go IS30K, which is so weird.
- 1:18:04Actually relates to that. You're asking about over
- 1:18:06distance. Like before, I'd almost every
- 1:18:10week be doing 45 to 50K, like in the lead up to last year's
- 1:18:15Tokyo. This time it's the complete
- 1:18:16opposite almost. I feel like I'm training like a
- 1:18:19sprinter with these sessions. But yeah, I think I'm in a good
- 1:18:24place. What what can I give it?
- 1:18:25Like, I'm going to go 64. I I was surprised how high you
- 1:18:30boys went, but I feel like I can, yeah, make some big jumps
- 1:18:34and just need to work on that durability, the long stuff, then
- 1:18:38hopefully, yeah, make that three or five per K 210 marathon pays
- 1:18:41doable. Very nice.
- 1:18:45Lastly, you don't have to answer.
- 1:18:47Is there any kind of like an accountability action which you
- 1:18:50want to take away from this episode and either make a change
- 1:18:53or continue to do something in the next couple of weeks,
- 1:18:56whether that be like or need to get in the gym more or need to
- 1:18:59sort my diet out a little bit? Yeah, yeah.
- 1:19:04I need to sort my not that like, like 'cause I don't weigh, I
- 1:19:09don't weigh myself every, every like I never weigh myself and I
- 1:19:13weigh myself yesterday and OK, I'm putting the same numbers as
- 1:19:16I did before and I'm 10 kilos heavier than when I was so at my
- 1:19:19worst. But I do have, you know, the
- 1:19:24chocolate share patch you have. I'll just devour one of them
- 1:19:29every single night and then three nights a week a whole Ben
- 1:19:31and Jerry's tub. So I've now come to the
- 1:19:33conclusion I'm not having the share pack.
- 1:19:35I'm going to have two little yogurts in two of these.
- 1:19:38Like do you know, have you guys been to Netherlands before?
- 1:19:41You know, the stroopwafels, you know, the unbelievable.
- 1:19:44Yeah, yeah, there you go, There you go, there you go, two of
- 1:19:46them. And then I'm still keeping my 3
- 1:19:48hanging outs a week because I'm not going to lie, I just have
- 1:19:51the biggest sweet tooth. But yeah, I think I need to,
- 1:19:56yeah. So that that the chocolate and
- 1:20:00sweets addiction out a little bit.
- 1:20:04But yeah, that's my big thing. I'd like to keep going with my
- 1:20:09hip mobility. That's something that Coach and
- 1:20:12I established is something I can improve on after Morigami, so
- 1:20:16I've been doing that, yeah, most days.
- 1:20:20So yeah, you guys can absolutely keep me honest.
- 1:20:23I need more range through my hips and there was one other
- 1:20:26thing as well that's really a big one.
- 1:20:30The other one will probably come back to me next week.
- 1:20:34I'm going to go for me sauna. I've been trying to recently
- 1:20:37bang out the sauna just because I'm so bad in the heat.
- 1:20:41It's a joke. And yeah, I feel like this time
- 1:20:43with London I'm not going to take any gambles, just with how
- 1:20:48unpredictable it is. Like yeah, it could be 20 plus
- 1:20:51easily, but you never know. So I want to get comfortable
- 1:20:55just sweating out Yeah sauna post run.
- 1:20:58I actually hate it. Like I love a nice icy cold day.
- 1:21:01Ideally I'd race a marathon in like 0°, that would be the
- 1:21:05absolute dream. But I realise London is not
- 1:21:08going to be that, so I've got to just prep for a little bit of
- 1:21:11yeah, spicy weather. It's after bedroom sauna.
- 1:21:16Oh yes, the sauna tent. The best £100 I've ever spent on
- 1:21:20Amazon. Unreal.
- 1:21:21There's. 100 Oh wow. But it's incredible.
- 1:21:25You can spend like some of these saunas, like 2 grand. 3 grand
- 1:21:29isn't just, yeah, £100 infrared and it gets up to like 65.
- 1:21:35So I was sitting there for half hour.
- 1:21:38I'll eat dinner in it as well. Bit of multitasking.
- 1:21:41Unreal. Yeah, yeah.
- 1:21:43Maybe one of these later pods might be recorded in sauna.
- 1:21:46We'll see what happens. Yeah.
- 1:21:49Jake will be in the normal tech boots and you'll be in the
- 1:21:52summer. Yeah, yeah.
- 1:21:54You just see me pass out halfway through.
- 1:21:56I'm not making the hour. That's crazy, right?
- 1:22:01Well, we'll, we'll let Tim get to bed.
- 1:22:03I just want to say to the listeners, anyone who's
- 1:22:05listening, this series is unsponsored and the lads are
- 1:22:08doing it off their own goodwill, completely off their backs and
- 1:22:12the the easy double finances are in dire straits.
- 1:22:15So if anyone would like to sponsor and support the series
- 1:22:19and win, we'll we'll help the lads out, whether that be like
- 1:22:21travel to London or even if it's just some money for some food
- 1:22:25whilst they're there. Like they're giving their time
- 1:22:27to us and sharing their valuable knowledge and insights which
- 1:22:31they don't have to do. So we'd love to give something
- 1:22:34back to them to thank them. You mean we're not getting an
- 1:22:36appearance fee? What?
- 1:22:40We've been done dirty, Yeah. Ask Owen mate, you'll sort you
- 1:22:44out. He's.
- 1:22:46Doing well all right. Thanks guys.
- 1:22:50Thanks very much. Lovely.
- 1:22:52Cheers boys. If you would like to follow the
- 1:22:55Lads Train in between now and the next episode, you can catch
