- 0:56You're already taking the first step. just by
- 1:00joining us here today. Well you know it's it's
- 1:04almost as if the Fed is playing political games
- 1:07here and you would think that they're just basically
- 1:11another wing of their government which in a way
- 1:13they are because you have the head politically
- 1:15appointed but that's what people have come to
- 1:19expect. We've had this perfect Goldilocks economy
- 1:23for some time, maybe not perfect, but again,
- 1:25we haven't had inflation for the longest time
- 1:28and we've had a long economic expansion. Don't
- 1:31get me started about how anemic the expansion
- 1:33has been. It's been pretty weak, but people really
- 1:39haven't felt pain for a long time and they're
- 1:41not used to it. So, Angel, you may be aware that
- 1:45most of the... central banks around the world,
- 1:48they have a single mandate. We have a dual mandate,
- 1:51makes our central bank a little bit different
- 1:55in that they're supposed to not only fight inflation,
- 1:59but also keep people employed. And you'd argue
- 2:03back and forth whether that's a good thing or
- 2:05a bad thing, but certainly we're going to have
- 2:09more inflation given that our central bank is
- 2:13trying to basically balance these two contradictory
- 2:17goals. Well, and part of that historically is
- 2:21that there is there's a there's a negative relationship
- 2:26between unemployment and inflation. Usually they
- 2:29work in opposite directions. Phillips curve tells
- 2:31us that right. That has not really been the case
- 2:35here, even though I feel like. The numbers. make
- 2:40it look like that's what's happening. But I can't
- 2:42help but think, how are these numbers accurate
- 2:46if every place I go in town, there's still help
- 2:49wanted signs? I'm just, I'm having such a hard
- 2:53time with that. And maybe that's only true in
- 2:55my area. I don't know. But there's a lot of jobs
- 2:58out there. Well, it's not just true in your area,
- 3:00Angel, I promise. We have a major labor force
- 3:03participation rate. problem. And I know, I know
- 3:05you realize that if you want, I can go and I
- 3:07can show you some stats on that. But basically,
- 3:13the issue here, oh, yeah, that's what's going
- 3:14to happen is it doesn't like me to go into slide
- 3:16sorter with two, two screens, but that's okay.
- 3:19You know, we every time we have a recession,
- 3:21you see that we do not recover to the same level
- 3:26of labor force participation that we had in the
- 3:29last. And that's sad, because COVID really did
- 3:32number on us people got a lot of free money and
- 3:35maybe decided that they don't really feel like
- 3:37working and since we really haven't had the economic
- 3:44turmoil that everybody's predicting and I'm sure
- 3:46it is probably just right around the corner sad
- 3:48to say that it's going to probably take something
- 3:51like that to snap people out of this complacency
- 3:55where you know I don't really have to work or
- 3:57I work when I want to and you can say well you
- 4:00know what's the big deal that the bar is closed
- 4:02on Monday but wait we have issues throughout
- 4:05our entire supply chain shipping lumber it's
- 4:09always something and then just a few weeks ago
- 4:12it was eggs probably by the time this airs we're
- 4:15going to have another supply chain issue because
- 4:19it's always something, somebody is not working
- 4:22or we can't get it shipped where we need it to
- 4:24be. This is a major issue. And I think that when
- 4:28the sugar buzz of all that printed money wears
- 4:31off, maybe people realize that no, wanting people
- 4:35to work during the pandemic. was not just all
- 4:38about money. I mean, this is people's lives.
- 4:40I mean, people who may not be able to afford
- 4:43a home. Maybe they find it very difficult to
- 4:46get married because they can't form a new household.
- 4:49People who are having a difficulty. going to
- 4:52college. So this is going to impact real people.
- 4:54But again, I think we're still living in Oz,
- 4:59and it's going to take something to shake us
- 5:00out of it before we realize that, you know, yes,
- 5:03we have done something wrong here. And no, we
- 5:05can't live in a world where there are just no
- 5:07consequences. Well, and I think another thing
- 5:09that's happened here over the past few years
- 5:11is people really began to just value their leisure
- 5:14time. So we already had some gig economy going.
- 5:18We already had people that were working job to
- 5:20job here and there. They didn't have full -time
- 5:22jobs, but they were working for cash. And I think
- 5:25that that economy is still strong in and of itself.
- 5:29But the other thing you've got is you've got
- 5:31people who really just got comfortable in that
- 5:34lifestyle and they're not going to go back to
- 5:36full -time jobs. They've figured out ways to
- 5:39make it on less. They figured out ways to survive
- 5:42without that full -time income. And I don't think
- 5:45they're going back. And that's that's going to
- 5:49be tough to recover from too. It's just. It's
- 5:54just different, and so that's where I really
- 5:56fuss about and has such a hard time with all
- 5:58the stats that are coming out, because. You know,
- 6:01if you're if you're looking at employment on
- 6:04a smaller base. The fraction is not going to
- 6:07look as bad as it is. And that's why we're talking
- 6:11labor force participation rate, because like
- 6:13you're only unemployed as long as you're looking
- 6:15for work. Once you're no longer looking for work,
- 6:18you're no longer unemployed, you're disgruntled,
- 6:20and you're no longer counted. Now, why is it
- 6:22that people like you don't write the headlines?
- 6:26Because people don't want to read that. They
- 6:28don't want to read that. They want to read other
- 6:29bad stuff. I guess so. And you're 100 % right.
- 6:33I mean, you understand the statistics. And unfortunately,
- 6:38even those in the financial press who do understand
- 6:41economics, they've got to write some scare headlines.
- 6:44They've got to go sell copy every day. And the
- 6:47facts may not be what sells copy, unfortunately.
- 6:52Well, now it's like with the whole, we're not
- 6:54in a recession. Oh, we're going to change the
- 6:56definition because the jobs report doesn't look
- 6:59that bad. right nobody ever said but wait a second
- 7:03where where have all the unemployed gone they
- 7:07didn't just disappear they're just no longer
- 7:10counted oh yeah hundred percent so but anyway
- 7:15yeah we could go on and on about this and just
- 7:18be it's really frustrating yeah it's really frustrating
- 7:21and it's i don't know i don't know how to how
- 7:25to talk about it in a way that would convince
- 7:27people. And once people's minds are made up,
- 7:29they're not going to. It's the reason why there's
- 7:32no use to arguing on Facebook or anything else,
- 7:35because you're not going to persuade anybody.
- 7:39Yeah, well, 100 percent. And I can show you some
- 7:41calculations over here. If you actually take
- 7:43a look at the labor force participation, you
- 7:46can see just how much of it is due to the increase
- 7:50in the aging population. You know, here we go.
- 7:54I think I have to. Oh, what happened again? Oh,
- 7:57my goodness. I am just. Yeah, it's I'm no good
- 8:04with two screens, but you can see that most of
- 8:06it was due to the fact that we have an aging
- 8:10population, but a lot of it isn't. And shame
- 8:13on us. Shame on us for the fact that that we're
- 8:17not fixing fixing our labor force participation
- 8:20problem. But anyway, yeah, there we go. I knew
- 8:24it was here someplace. Yeah, see, that's insane.
- 8:26But nobody's going to talk about that. Nobody's
- 8:28going to look at that. I mean, look at the drop.
- 8:32It's insane. So of course, the fraction isn't
- 8:35going to look or the percentage, a percentage
- 8:37is a fraction. OK, but it's not going to look
- 8:39as bad as it is because you just keep making
- 8:42the number on the bottom smaller. So it's not
- 8:45as big of an issue. Right, right. And so people
- 8:49who are above 65 are 50 % absolute terms less
- 8:55likely to be working than someone who is under
- 8:5865. So then when you factor in that we have,
- 9:03say, another 4 .4 percent, well we should see
- 9:06a 2 .2 percent decline, but yeah we've actually
- 9:09seen a four percent decline in labor force participation.
- 9:13So when you see the headlines that say most of
- 9:15this is due to the aging population, well yes
- 9:17it is, but depending on how you calculate it,
- 9:19oh it's a sizable minority that's due to, gosh
- 9:23can we just say it, it seems like people have
- 9:25just gotten kind of lazy. Or we've got an underground
- 9:30economy that we're not even aware of. that is
- 9:34bridging that gap and they're not having to have
- 9:39a documented employment to make ends meet, which
- 9:44is scary in its own right as well. Right. Well,
- 9:48there you go. And I'm not saying bad things.
- 9:52I'm just saying that, I mean. No, 100%. I mean,
- 9:55there are a lot of people coming to the country
- 9:56and they're undocumented and we don't know the
- 9:59extent of that. But again, we have seen a large
- 10:03influx. Well, and I'm even thinking about like,
- 10:06if you think about like jobs, like people that
- 10:09clean houses or people that do events. maybe
- 10:14some of those bouncers, maybe they're at a club
- 10:17one night and a friend says, hey, I'm having
- 10:19a house party in a couple of weeks. Can I pay
- 10:22you a hundred bucks for you to come bounce at
- 10:23my door? Like be the guy at the door that's checking
- 10:26IDs, checking IDs for the party, you know? But
- 10:30those are events that they make thousands of
- 10:32dollars, totally undocumented. None of that is
- 10:36documented in the economy. And those kinds of
- 10:38events take place. I mean, whether it's a rave
- 10:42or just a party or the college kids are like,
- 10:45hey, I want to make money. I'm going to have
- 10:46a house party this weekend. I already get stuff
- 10:48in Hollywood or in California where they're having
- 10:51these big elaborate stars having parties and
- 10:55stuff. Some of those have fees associated with
- 10:58them to get to one part or another. I mean, there's
- 11:01all of these things that there's just a lot of
- 11:04cash that's being exchanged, and so even though
- 11:07a lot of people also talk about us becoming an
- 11:10electronic currency or digital currency society,
- 11:14there is a lot of cash out there because not
- 11:17only is there cash in those kinds of things,
- 11:19but people in poverty deal in cash. 100%. Anybody
- 11:24who's got a Class D or even maybe a Class C minus
- 11:27property, it's hard even in 2023 to collect that
- 11:31rent. electronically and it would be easy for
- 11:34us you maybe think it's easy for them but it
- 11:37isn't right people just they're not in the banking
- 11:40system and other ways around it you can go to
- 11:437 -eleven etc but i mean whoa you you really
- 11:46just yeah there's a lot and they're afraid they're
- 11:50afraid of having their money in the bank they're
- 11:53afraid of not being able to access their money
- 11:55because it's just and i got this from working
- 11:58in high poverty schools is they don't want to
- 12:01lose access to their cash because it's harder
- 12:04to come by than it is for some of the other people
- 12:06that maybe we know and we're surrounded by. And
- 12:09so they have a huge distrust of putting it somewhere
- 12:13and not being able to see it, not being able
- 12:15to touch it, not being able to keep it on their
- 12:18body and keep it safe. And so there's a lot of
- 12:22cash transactions that take place. It takes place
- 12:24all over. A lot of us don't recognize it because
- 12:27we put our money in banks. We have debit cards.
- 12:29We're used to doing things digitally. We buy
- 12:30stuff online. We don't we don't see dollars the
- 12:34same way we did when we were younger. I think
- 12:35about it when I was like in high school and I
- 12:37would count every dollar. I would literally like
- 12:39iron my dollars. You can do that because there's
- 12:41a lot of cotton in them and I would straighten
- 12:44them all out and I would have them all safe.
- 12:46They would all face the same direction. I would
- 12:48have them in orders of denominations and I had
- 12:51them in this little green can. and I would put
- 12:53all my dollars in there and I popped the top
- 12:55on and nobody ever messed with it. I got pretty
- 12:57lucky because nobody in my house is going to
- 12:58take it. But that was what I did and I could
- 13:01see my money. There was a summer. I was the breadwinner.
- 13:05Jason was still in grad school and we paid off
- 13:08a ten thousand dollar credit card and I was getting
- 13:11my teacher pay in the summer and then I was working
- 13:14for a hockey team selling hockey tickets and
- 13:17sponsorship packages. But when I would cash my
- 13:19check, I would get it in cash. and I would put
- 13:22it in our safe because I needed to be able to
- 13:25see it, touch it. I needed to know it was there.
- 13:28And that was how we saved the money that summer
- 13:30to pay off that $10 ,000 credit card was because
- 13:33every time I got a paycheck, I was putting cash
- 13:35back in there so I could see it, I could touch
- 13:37it, I could look at it. And there's a lot of
- 13:39significance to that. So, you know, as we get
- 13:42further along and we no longer see the dollar,
- 13:44no longer touch the dollars and we move more
- 13:46electronically, we forget what it was like. to
- 13:49be in those situations where we needed the dollars.
- 13:52We needed to be able to see them, touch them,
- 13:54feel them, smell them. We needed that, but that's
- 13:59my own experience with it was when I was in high
- 14:00school, junior high. And then the way that Jason
- 14:03and I saved when I was making like 30 ,000 a
- 14:05year and I was the breadwinner and that's crazy.
- 14:09And I just think about that's my own experience
- 14:12with not having the same security that we have
- 14:15now with the dollars that we make. So just kind
- 14:18of think about those things too. And I just be,
- 14:23be conscientious that there could be some serious,
- 14:26um, highlight reels going on with the various
- 14:30statistics that are being pushed out to us. Um,
- 14:33just be, be conscious of that. And I'm not saying
- 14:35put on a 10, like a temple hat, don't get all
- 14:37conspiracy. Um, that's not what I'm saying at
- 14:39all. I'm just saying be conscious of what could
- 14:42be occurring and just question it. Just question
- 14:46it. Don't. I'm not saying yes or no. Yes, it's
- 14:49amazing. No, it's crap. I'm just saying think
- 14:51about it. Give us some actual thought and then
- 14:54draw your own conclusions. Well, it would be
- 14:56just dandy if everybody understood macroeconomics
- 15:00and made good decisions and. I know it's it's
- 15:04frustrating, but you know, George, I just want
- 15:06to thank you for being here and you have you've
- 15:09been such a great friend and you always bring
- 15:12amazing information to the table. I love your
- 15:14charts. It's a lot and I'm okay with charge but
- 15:20I know that there's some people out there that
- 15:21are not and that is why friends you want to get
- 15:24the VIP subscription because what you just saw
- 15:27presented to you probably needs to be watched.
- 15:29I probably need to look at at least four or five
- 15:31more times because I'm sure I missed some parts
- 15:34in there because while he was presenting I was
- 15:35thinking about what happened in the 90s in Texas
- 15:39when some of the homestead laws went away. and
- 15:43allowed for people to be able to take out those
- 15:45loans against their homes so that they could
- 15:48refinance credit cards or pay whatever. And I
- 15:50was looking on the charts. I was trying to find
- 15:51that information. So I'm absolutely going to
- 15:53go back because I want to see those because I
- 15:56remember it happening and I want to see what
- 15:58kind of an effect it had nationally because I
- 16:00don't think Texas was the only state that did
- 16:01that. I think there were some other states that
- 16:03also had some of those homestead exemptions where
- 16:05basically you couldn't lose your home. because
- 16:08it was your homestead. And so when that was taken
- 16:09away, people could get those equity lines, the
- 16:12credit or home equity loans, whatever they were
- 16:14doing. And they could use that money to pay off
- 16:17bills or do whatever they needed to do. And that
- 16:19would have been, oh gosh, maybe the mid nineties,
- 16:23late nineties. And so I need to go back and look
- 16:26at those. So, and I'm not trying to say that
- 16:28like, if I have to do it, wow. But I'm just saying
- 16:30there's a lot of information there. And having
- 16:33that subscription allows you to get into those
- 16:35recordings and really dissect them. because it's
- 16:39just awesome to have that information and have
- 16:40it right at your fingertips. All right. Well,
- 16:43you're a great friend, Angel, as well. And I
- 16:45just want to say thank you so much for the opportunity.
- 16:47I love this audience. I have met so many amazing
- 16:49people. Yeah, no, it is a lot of fun. And guys,
- 16:54thank you for being here. These are my six most
- 16:56fabulous days of the year. We do this twice a
- 16:58year, three days each time. And until next time,
- 17:02and hopefully we see you on the live side.
