On 4 August 1897, two kilometers south of Elche, Alicante, in Spain, a young worker named Manuel Campello Esclapez was clearing farmland when he stumbled upon an unusual-looking object protruding from the ground. He began digging and soon realized this was no ordinary object; it was the bust of a woman with very distinct and unusual features. Although Esclapez didn’t know it at the time, he had just found one of the world’s most mysterious artifacts, the Lady of Elche.
