Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Four-finger discount, dude.
- 0:11Speaker 2: It's Simpsons News Time, guys. Infotainment.
- 0:17Speaker 1: Welcome to the news.
- 0:18Speaker 2: You know what the best part about that, and I've
- 0:20Speaker 2: always said this, is Kent Brockman having sushi in the spa.
- 0:24Speaker 2: And it drops in and everyone just starts laughing.
- 0:25Speaker 1: Everyone thinks it's hilarious. His wife peaked in that moment.
- 0:29Speaker 1: I like to think it's the jiggling... Hey, enough about that.
- 0:33Speaker 1: The news. What about the news?
- 0:34Speaker 2: What about the news, indeed? So there's lots of news happening. Normally,
- 0:37Speaker 2: there's not much happening in the Simpsons world, but I
- 0:39Speaker 2: feel like the next 12 months is going to be
- 0:41Speaker 2: ramped up. In particular, this month, because we've just had
- 0:44Speaker 2: the D23 Expo over in the States, and... They like
- 0:47Speaker 2: their reveals at D23. And boy, did the Simpsons crew
- 0:50Speaker 2: do some reveals.
- 0:51Speaker 1: There was a heap of reveals. There was some Star
- 0:54Speaker 1: Wars stuff. There was some Marvel stuff. But yeah, primarily
- 0:56Speaker 1: there was some Simpsons stuff. I mean, usually when you
- 0:58Speaker 1: have D23, the D stands for Disney, don't you know?
- 1:02Speaker 1: It's like, okay, who's going to be in the new
- 1:04Speaker 1: X-Men movies? Here's who we're going to have in our
- 1:07Speaker 1: new Star Wars movies. Here are some projects that will
- 1:10Speaker 1: never happen. But usually you don't get a whole lot
- 1:12Speaker 1: of Simpsons stuff. This time, we got an animatic... Yeah,
- 1:15Speaker 1: we got an animatic.
- 1:16Speaker 2: We got the reveal of the name of the new
- 1:18Speaker 2: Simpsons movie, and it's called The New Simpsons Movie. I
- 1:22Speaker 2: have said this because we just did a reaction video
- 1:25Speaker 2: to this animatic, right?
- 1:26Speaker 1: We sure did. Watch out for soy face. Watch out for... No, no,
- 1:29Speaker 1: we didn't do that.
- 1:30Speaker 2: Check out on our YouTube channel if you're listening now.
- 1:32Speaker 2: We just did a video watching the animatic and giving
- 1:34Speaker 2: our thoughts on that. We're going to be also discussing here,
- 1:36Speaker 2: of course, but they revealed that the title of the
- 1:38Speaker 2: new Simpsons movie is The New Simpsons Movie, and I
- 1:40Speaker 2: discussed there how when I first read that, I went, Really?
- 1:43Speaker 2: That's what you're doing? And the more I thought about it,
- 1:45Speaker 2: I went, if I'm talking about this movie, what am
- 1:48Speaker 2: I going to be calling it? I'm not going to
- 1:50Speaker 2: be calling it the Simpsons movie, because it already is
- 1:52Speaker 2: the Simpsons movie. It's the new Simpsons movie. It's the
- 1:55Speaker 2: Simpsons movie with a new hat. And I put it
- 1:59Speaker 2: side by side, and I feel like the design of
- 2:01Speaker 2: the new, in what they revealed anyway at D23... Felt
- 2:04Speaker 2: like it was an homage to Lisa versus Malibu Stacy
- 2:07Speaker 2: with a new hat.
- 2:08Speaker 1: Complete with new hat.
- 2:09Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 2:09Speaker 1: She got a new hat.
- 2:10Speaker 2: The new even looked very, almost, not exactly the same,
- 2:12Speaker 2: but very similar.
- 2:13Speaker 1: It sure did, yeah. The pointy star around it. It's
- 2:15Speaker 1: very much an if you know, you know for diehard
- 2:17Speaker 1: fans of the show or even casual fans of the show.
- 2:19Speaker 1: Everyone knows she's got a new hat. But yeah, it's
- 2:22Speaker 1: a nice in-joke as well. I was a little concerned
- 2:25Speaker 1: because if you've got the Simpsons movie and the new
- 2:27Speaker 1: Simpsons movie, what happens if you make another movie after
- 2:30Speaker 1: this one?
- 2:31Speaker 2: And I've said to you, I'd call it the newer.
- 2:34Speaker 1: The newest. Yes, and then you held up two bags
- 2:36Speaker 1: with dollar signs on them. But we'll get to that
- 2:40Speaker 1: when we get to it.
- 2:40Speaker 2: It did feel like watching that D23 Expo, sort of the,
- 2:45Speaker 2: what's it called, the panel. Watching the panel, it felt
- 2:47Speaker 2: like this was the door opening for what's going to
- 2:49Speaker 2: be 12 months of just Simpsons everywhere or just new
- 2:53Speaker 2: merch and new news up until the release of the
- 2:56Speaker 2: new movie.
- 2:56Speaker 1: Sure.
- 2:57Speaker 2: Because I remember when the last movie came out.
- 2:59Speaker 1: It was massive. It was just Simpsons tie-ins everywhere.
- 3:02Speaker 2: I remember I just posted on the Facebook page, it's
- 3:04Speaker 2: been leaked that Jack in the Box over in the States,
- 3:06Speaker 2: the fast food franchise, are doing a munchie meal of
- 3:10Speaker 2: terror or something to tie in with a Treehouse of
- 3:12Speaker 2: Horror themed happy meal for the kids. And each one
- 3:15Speaker 2: comes with a glow-in-the-dark Simpsons Halloween themed collector cup.
- 3:18Speaker 1: And I'm like... It begins. Okay. Be prepared to fill
- 3:23Speaker 1: your house with all manner of merch. Yeah. And then
- 3:26Speaker 1: fill landfill with all manner of merch. No, no, no.
- 3:28Speaker 2: Fill my garage.
- 3:30Speaker 1: These are going to be collector's items that you will
- 3:31Speaker 1: hold on to forever and ever.
- 3:34Speaker 2: My wife, Nicola, is currently over in England, where she's from,
- 3:37Speaker 2: of course, visiting family because her sister's just had a baby. So,
- 3:40Speaker 2: shout out to baby Darcy and Benita and Isabel. But
- 3:43Speaker 2: she's over there. So, I said to Nicola, when you
- 3:44Speaker 2: get back, this garage is going to be sorted. I'm
- 3:46Speaker 2: going to be selling all the shit that's in here.
- 3:47Speaker 2: It's going to be tidying and get rid of stuff.
- 3:49Speaker 2: You won't know it.
- 3:50Speaker 1: It's been a week.
- 3:50Speaker 2: I looked at it and I went, I don't know
- 3:53Speaker 2: where to start. You shouldn't have said that, man. I
- 3:56Speaker 2: picked up something and I was like, and it was
- 3:58Speaker 2: always like looking at me going, don't show me there, no.
- 4:03Speaker 1: Oh, you watch too much Toy Story. Everything's sparking joy
- 4:06Speaker 1: for you. I did clear.
- 4:10Speaker 2: Out some shit the other day though. And I sold
- 4:12Speaker 2: it pretty cheap. Well, not as cheap as it could
- 4:14Speaker 2: have gone, but you know, I pretty much got back
- 4:16Speaker 2: just under what I paid for it originally. And I
- 4:18Speaker 2: was like, I wish I had made money on that,
- 4:20Speaker 2: but I also feel good that it's gone. I've cleared
- 4:23Speaker 2: stuff out of the house. I was like, you're doing super, Dano.
- 4:27Speaker 1: I had an item that I'd been trying to sell
- 4:29Speaker 1: for some time that I legitimately took a complete bath on.
- 4:33Speaker 1: I'm not sure what the markdown was, but it was
- 4:36Speaker 1: somewhere in the neighborhood of 90%. Just get rid of it.
- 4:39Speaker 1: I was like, yeah, this is just gathering dust, both
- 4:42Speaker 1: physically and psychologically. The more it sits in my house,
- 4:45Speaker 1: the more I want it.
- 4:46Speaker 2: But also for me- So I can replace it with
- 4:48Speaker 2: new stuff. For me, though, I can't justify just giving
- 4:51Speaker 2: it away. I'm like, I have to get something for it.
- 4:53Speaker 1: Oh, sure.
- 4:53Speaker 2: Every now and then it's just five bucks. At least
- 4:55Speaker 2: I got something for it.
- 4:56Speaker 1: That's correct, yeah. Because you're the wheel at- You and Trump,
- 5:00Speaker 1: you're the art of the deal guys.
- 5:02Speaker 2: But yeah, so the new Simpsons movie. Yes, let's talk
- 5:04Speaker 2: about that. I'm excited for it. I think- So we'll
- 5:07Speaker 2: talk about the animatic. So they revealed the animatic as well.
- 5:09Speaker 2: It goes for about three minutes. And the whole concept
- 5:11Speaker 2: is apparently there's some sort of contest. There's a baseball
- 5:13Speaker 2: player for the isotopes.
- 5:14Speaker 1: He's hitting.
- 5:14Speaker 2: Well, that isotope stadium, anyway. I don't think it was
- 5:16Speaker 2: an isotope. He was throwing the batter. The batter and
- 5:19Speaker 2: the pitcher. He hits the ball, and whoever catches it
- 5:22Speaker 2: wins a lot of money, apparently.
- 5:23Speaker 1: Gets a cash prize, yeah. So it looks like Homer's
- 5:25Speaker 1: going to get it. Coming his way... Until it's not.
- 5:28Speaker 1: Until it's not. And what ensues is the ball bouncing
- 5:32Speaker 1: all through the stadium and then all through Springfield. And, yeah,
- 5:34Speaker 1: we're getting a bit of tour of the town and
- 5:36Speaker 1: a bit of a reintroduction to a lot of the characters,
- 5:39Speaker 1: some of whom we haven't seen for a very long time.
- 5:41Speaker 1: One personal favourite of guys. I'm not going to name names, but,
- 5:43Speaker 1: you know... watch the reaction video. Please watch the reaction video.
- 5:47Speaker 1: Let's talk about it. It's Aunty Pie in the Sky.
- 5:48Speaker 1: It's Aunty Pie in the Sky. We're so happy to
- 5:50Speaker 1: see you again. But yeah, when's the last time we
- 5:52Speaker 1: saw him? 10 years or something.
- 5:53Speaker 2: Yeah, I can't remember. He's one of those characters that
- 5:55Speaker 2: you've always loved. I haven't seen him in recent seasons,
- 5:58Speaker 2: but it's been a long time. It's kind of like
- 5:59Speaker 2: a poo. Now, I did see someone posted on Twitter saying,
- 6:02Speaker 2: a poo's in this. I was like, it's Sanjay. Like, yeah,
- 6:04Speaker 2: but for like 0.1 seconds, it's a poo. And I'm like,
- 6:08Speaker 2: It's not.
- 6:08Speaker 1: It's an animatic. It just looks like it's Sanjay.
- 6:11Speaker 2: It's like, that's pretty racist, man. They're trying to throw
- 6:15Speaker 2: us off. A poo's returning. Otherwise, why would they do this?
- 6:18Speaker 2: I'm like, it's not a poo. It's Sanjay.
- 6:20Speaker 1: Cite your sources, please.
- 6:21Speaker 2: But yeah, it's just Jacques was in there in the
- 6:26Speaker 2: men's room. Again, I think you were right. During that video,
- 6:30Speaker 2: you were saying, the reaction video, you feel like this
- 6:32Speaker 2: could be the opening sequence to the movie. And I
- 6:34Speaker 2: think you're probably right because you wouldn't reveal this much
- 6:36Speaker 2: of the movie for it to be at the middle
- 6:38Speaker 2: of the movie. It feels like, you know, you go
- 6:40Speaker 2: to the movie like, oh, yeah, I've seen this, but
- 6:41Speaker 2: now it's going to look better.
- 6:43Speaker 1: Yes, it's going to have, yeah, the sound's going to
- 6:45Speaker 1: be amped up and the colour's going to be brighter.
- 6:47Speaker 2: And things will be different.
- 6:48Speaker 1: Oh, absolutely. You've just planted a tiny seed of doubt, though.
- 6:54Speaker 1: What if this is the opening sequence and then after
- 6:59Speaker 1: that we don't get as much sort of Springfield and
- 7:01Speaker 1: the colourful characters of Springfield as we might have hoped?
- 7:05Speaker 1: I was hoping that we'd, Not that this would be
- 7:07Speaker 1: the whole movie, but that the whole movie would have
- 7:10Speaker 1: all the hustle and bustle of Springfield. Not just about
- 7:13Speaker 1: the Simpsons family. They may put them front and center,
- 7:15Speaker 1: of course. It is the Simpsons movie, after all. But yeah,
- 7:19Speaker 1: take into account the whole town.
- 7:21Speaker 2: Yeah, I want this to be a town. The first
- 7:23Speaker 2: movie was a town-wide story. Until it's not. Until they
- 7:26Speaker 2: get out of the dome. And then it's like, I'm
- 7:27Speaker 2: going to cut back to the dome and see how
- 7:28Speaker 2: Springfield's gone for like 20 seconds. And then it's coming
- 7:30Speaker 2: back to the family again. I'm like, this doesn't feel right.
- 7:33Speaker 2: I hope this one stays within Springfield. And it's a,
- 7:37Speaker 2: it's a story that is incorporating the, like you said,
- 7:38Speaker 2: and you travel all over Springfield. You go to the
- 7:40Speaker 2: power plant, you go to the church, you go, you
- 7:41Speaker 2: go everywhere, but it stays in Springfield. Yeah. And I
- 7:44Speaker 2: don't want an outside big bad coming in. Just make,
- 7:47Speaker 2: keep it within the confines of Springfield.
- 7:49Speaker 1: Yeah. I think something that we both liked about this animatic,
- 7:52Speaker 1: this display as well, was the fact that it felt
- 7:54Speaker 1: like a movie. It felt really sort of, it felt
- 7:57Speaker 1: fast and big and energetic. I mean, not that the
- 8:00Speaker 1: average episode of The Simpsons is not those things or
- 8:03Speaker 1: can't be those things, but yeah, this felt like a
- 8:05Speaker 1: big event.
- 8:06Speaker 2: I was apprehensive when I first watched it. I was like,
- 8:08Speaker 2: I don't know, this could be, this could go one
- 8:10Speaker 2: of two ways. Either I'm going to really like it
- 8:11Speaker 2: or I'm going to go, oh, great. That's more of
- 8:13Speaker 2: that for the, in, what is it, September 2027. But no,
- 8:16Speaker 2: I watched it and I went, it seems like they're,
- 8:20Speaker 2: they've got their heart in the right place and they
- 8:22Speaker 2: know what we want.
- 8:23Speaker 1: Sure.
- 8:23Speaker 2: By incorporating as many characters as possible.
- 8:25Speaker 1: Yeah. No, but, I'm pretty excited. Yes.
- 8:28Speaker 2: All right. So other news that they revealed at D23.
- 8:30Speaker 2: So this one wasn't really like news they revealed, but
- 8:33Speaker 2: it's something that happened. And I know we see, it
- 8:35Speaker 2: feels like every time we do a news episode here
- 8:37Speaker 2: at 4-Fingered Discount, we cover this story. The remaster of
- 8:40Speaker 2: Simpsons Hit and Run.
- 8:40Speaker 1: I was about to say.
- 8:42Speaker 2: It's just like, it's just won't die. It's like that
- 8:44Speaker 2: cockroach that won't go away. And I think it's got
- 8:46Speaker 2: to the point where it seems they've gone, fine. Because
- 8:49Speaker 2: what happened was, did you read what happened?
- 8:51Speaker 1: Well, this came from the source. Yeah, yeah.
- 8:53Speaker 2: So what happened was they're doing the panel and they
- 8:55Speaker 2: took questions from the audience. And one fan said, is
- 8:58Speaker 2: there any chance of having a new Simpsons hit and run,
- 9:00Speaker 2: like a follow-up game? And sort of Matt Salmon's just
- 9:03Speaker 2: being sheepish as he always does. Oh, yeah, we really
- 9:05Speaker 2: want to. And Matt Green just comes out and goes, yeah,
- 9:08Speaker 2: I think the original one's returning in some way, right?
- 9:11Speaker 2: And it's like an awkward pause and someone just goes,
- 9:15Speaker 2: Or not. And then they swiftly move on to the
- 9:21Speaker 2: next story. So I feel like Groening there knows something.
- 9:25Speaker 2: Someone knows something, but we weren't supposed to know it yet.
- 9:29Speaker 1: Many such cases at events like this, you know, you
- 9:32Speaker 1: always have someone who didn't get the memo or is just,
- 9:35Speaker 1: you know, a loose lips kind of person who feels
- 9:39Speaker 1: they need to Share info with the world. Or they're
- 9:42Speaker 1: just absent-minded like Matt Groening and these guys.
- 9:44Speaker 2: If you're the ultimate conspiracy theorist, you could say, well,
- 9:47Speaker 2: maybe that was just purely designed this way to create
- 9:50Speaker 2: buzz for it. But then I would say, but this
- 9:53Speaker 2: was taking questions from the audience. And then that person
- 9:55Speaker 2: would say, well, that was a plant to ask that question.
- 9:57Speaker 2: I'm like, okay then, right?
- 9:58Speaker 1: Conspiracy theorists have always got an answer. for this kind
- 10:00Speaker 1: of thing.
- 10:00Speaker 2: There's always something, right? There's always, yeah, a justification. I
- 10:04Speaker 2: do feel that this was information that was not meant
- 10:06Speaker 2: to come out. When you watch it, you know, you.
- 10:09Speaker 1: Sometimes just get a vibe.
- 10:09Speaker 2: Matt Salmon and Matt Gray aren't good at acting like this.
- 10:13Speaker 2: Salmon looked like he was like, Caught off guard. Caught
- 10:18Speaker 2: off guard, indeed. So, I mean, I'll be excited. The
- 10:21Speaker 2: thing is, though, do I want the original game to
- 10:23Speaker 2: simply remastered? Or do I want a modern version of
- 10:27Speaker 2: the same kind of game? Because Simpsons Hit and Run,
- 10:29Speaker 2: you can still play it now. And yes, it's not
- 10:32Speaker 2: 2026 graphics, but they're good enough. And it's fun and
- 10:35Speaker 2: it's enjoyable. And the nostalgia of it is it's a
- 10:38Speaker 2: 23-year-old game, so it's not going to look perfect, right?
- 10:39Speaker 2: That's a bit of nostalgia for it.
- 10:41Speaker 1: I don't simply.
- 10:42Speaker 2: If you're going to remaster it, remaster the game, But
- 10:45Speaker 2: the way the game works though is, so there's various levels,
- 10:47Speaker 2: there's seven levels. And in the first level, you're in
- 10:51Speaker 2: one part of Springfield and you're driving around and it's basically,
- 10:53Speaker 2: it's like GTA, but Simpsons. You go to complete missions,
- 10:55Speaker 2: you drive and it's open world. So you can just
- 10:57Speaker 2: drive around and just get out of the car and
- 10:59Speaker 2: just wander for three hours if you want to. You
- 11:01Speaker 2: don't have to do any of the missions. You can
- 11:02Speaker 2: just wander around Springfield. But then, so the next map is,
- 11:06Speaker 2: you've got like, there's one where it's downtown Springfield and
- 11:09Speaker 2: there's one where it's like in the, in the heart
- 11:10Speaker 2: of the actual town where Moe's and all that is,
- 11:13Speaker 2: and the other one's a residential area, blah, blah, blah.
- 11:15Speaker 2: But you can't, they're not all joined. So if you
- 11:18Speaker 2: want to drive in downtown Springfield, you've got to do
- 11:20Speaker 2: level three and level five or whatever. I hope in
- 11:23Speaker 2: this new one, if they do remaster it, because some
- 11:25Speaker 2: guy has been remastering himself, sort of making his own
- 11:28Speaker 2: sort of mod on YouTube, and he's made it complete
- 11:30Speaker 2: open world. So you can drive from one to the next,
- 11:33Speaker 2: and it's one consecutive big giant map. I hope if
- 11:36Speaker 2: they do remaster it, they do that because it would
- 11:38Speaker 2: be fun to just be able to drive around all
- 11:40Speaker 2: of Springfield. Well, sure.
- 11:41Speaker 1: I mean, if you can play the old one and
- 11:42Speaker 1: it still works, then play the old one. I mean,
- 11:44Speaker 1: if you want to do it for nostalgia value or
- 11:46Speaker 1: you just like playing that particular version of the game,
- 11:49Speaker 1: then by all means do so. But if you're going
- 11:50Speaker 1: to be releasing a quote-unquote new version, make it a
- 11:53Speaker 1: new version. Don't just make it look newer. No, no, no.
- 11:56Speaker 2: Or do the same game, but have the open map,
- 11:59Speaker 2: but also add new missions to it and new characters.
- 12:01Speaker 2: Expand on it. Don't just give me the same game.
- 12:04Speaker 2: I mean- The game is great, but it's great already.
- 12:06Speaker 2: We've already got a great game. I can put it
- 12:08Speaker 2: in my PlayStation right now and play it.
- 12:10Speaker 1: Got a new hat.
- 12:10Speaker 2: Yeah, give me... Maybe I'll call it the new Simpsons
- 12:13Speaker 2: Hit and Run.
- 12:17Speaker 1: One would hope not. But anyway, yeah, so there we go.
- 12:21Speaker 2: But that was the first time where I've heard things
- 12:23Speaker 2: and gone, okay, it feels kind of real now because
- 12:26Speaker 2: Matt Graney was just like, yeah, isn't the first one
- 12:29Speaker 2: coming out? Because it was almost like he was answering
- 12:31Speaker 2: the question going, well, we're not getting a new one,
- 12:32Speaker 2: but isn't the first one coming out or something? And then, Yeah.
- 12:38Speaker 1: I'd say this with all due respect, and I'm not
- 12:39Speaker 1: trying to be ageist or anything like that. How old
- 12:41Speaker 1: is Matt Groening?
- 12:41Speaker 2: Oh, he'd be in his 70s now, right?
- 12:43Speaker 1: Okay.
- 12:43Speaker 2: Let's have a look. I'm going to say 72.
- 12:45Speaker 1: What do you reckon? I'm going to say 74.
- 12:48Speaker 2: Matt Groening is 72. I promise you I didn't know that.
- 12:53Speaker 2: I did not know that.
- 12:55Speaker 1: I promise you I did not know that, and I
- 12:57Speaker 1: was right to not know it. But anyway, look, I'm
- 12:59Speaker 1: not saying....
- 13:02Speaker 2: I am- You're 15 years away from that, right? You're
- 13:04Speaker 2: 20 years away from that.
- 13:06Speaker 1: I'm a little younger than Matt Groening, and I'm going
- 13:08Speaker 1: to have occasions when I'll say, I've said something, it's like, oh,
- 13:10Speaker 1: was I meant to say that? Yes. Yeah, so- Slip
- 13:13Speaker 1: of the tongue. It happens.
- 13:14Speaker 2: The thing is for me, though, sometimes I don't believe it,
- 13:16Speaker 2: because it got to the point where I feel like
- 13:19Speaker 2: Marvel and Disney were sending out Tom Holland to accidentally
- 13:22Speaker 2: leak information.
- 13:22Speaker 1: Sure.
- 13:23Speaker 2: I think the first time he may have accidentally leaked stuff,
- 13:25Speaker 2: but then it just became a bit, and everyone's like,
- 13:27Speaker 2: you can't say that. Ruffalo did it as well.
- 13:29Speaker 1: That's right, yeah.
- 13:30Speaker 2: Ruffalo is not a fucking idiot. He's not revealing stuff
- 13:33Speaker 2: unless it's been passed by the board.
- 13:36Speaker 1: Yeah, one gets the feeling things are pretty... When you're
- 13:38Speaker 1: dealing with global expensive properties like this, yeah, one gets
- 13:44Speaker 1: the feeling.
- 13:44Speaker 2: They know what they're doing.
- 13:45Speaker 1: There's a lot of PR stuff going on behind the scenes. Yes.
- 13:49Speaker 2: All right, so the next news story we have here,
- 13:51Speaker 2: this one is not new movie related, but it was
- 13:54Speaker 2: doing the rounds because it was able to give news websites,
- 13:57Speaker 2: I say news lightly... the headline of The Simpsons Might
- 14:01Speaker 2: End Soon, according to the cast. And what happened was
- 14:04Speaker 2: our pal Michael Rosenbaum has a podcast called Inside of
- 14:06Speaker 2: You Podcast. It's a really good podcast. It's a really
- 14:08Speaker 2: good podcast, yeah. And Nancy Cartwright, the voice of Bart
- 14:11Speaker 2: and others, was a guest recently on the show. And
- 14:14Speaker 2: he asked her about... It's the question that they always
- 14:16Speaker 2: get asked. When do you think The Simpsons is going
- 14:17Speaker 2: to end?
- 14:17Speaker 1: Here's the thing. Michael's interviews usually go for an hour,
- 14:23Speaker 1: hour and a half.
- 14:23Speaker 2: You see about three minutes of them, I guess.
- 14:25Speaker 1: And then, yeah... 30 seconds of this bit has been clipped. Yeah.
- 14:31Speaker 1: This is part of a much bigger, broader conversation. But yes,
- 14:35Speaker 1: we'll take this bit out of it.
- 14:36Speaker 2: So essentially, he asked her, when do you think The
- 14:39Speaker 2: Simpsons is going to end? And she thinks it's going
- 14:41Speaker 2: to end at season 40.
- 14:43Speaker 1: Is she operating from any deep insider knowledge or anything
- 14:46Speaker 1: like that? No. Or is this just speculation on her part?
- 14:48Speaker 1: Or not even speculation on her, but it's like, oh- No,
- 14:50Speaker 1: she literally says, it's my opinion. Yes.
- 14:52Speaker 2: He's like, are you sure? And she's like, yeah, it's
- 14:54Speaker 2: just my opinion. I don't know anything. It's just, that's
- 14:56Speaker 2: what I think. And she's entitled to that opinion.
- 14:58Speaker 1: Of course, yeah. I mean, 40 years.
- 15:00Speaker 2: And the thing is, though, Matt Groening quickly dismissed that
- 15:03Speaker 2: at D23 because someone, one of the fans, another fan
- 15:05Speaker 2: brought it up saying, Nancy said the show's going to
- 15:06Speaker 2: end at season 40.
- 15:07Speaker 1: Is that true? And he's like, no. What? Why? Look
- 15:09Speaker 1: at this.
- 15:10Speaker 2: Why would we end this?
- 15:11Speaker 1: Correct. Yeah. And I think she also said, yeah, look,
- 15:14Speaker 1: I hope it goes longer and it may well do.
- 15:16Speaker 2: Because you mentioned, I don't know how we discussed this
- 15:20Speaker 2: recently on a podcast, but the idea of the Simpsons
- 15:23Speaker 2: ending just seems ludicrous to me because the license, the
- 15:27Speaker 2: IP is just worth way.
- 15:28Speaker 1: Too much money. Correct.
- 15:30Speaker 2: You can make so much merch, money out of the
- 15:32Speaker 2: merch and whatnot. And it felt like for a long
- 15:33Speaker 2: time they weren't capitalizing on that.
- 15:36Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 15:36Speaker 2: Now they've realized, oh shit, we can slap The Simpsons
- 15:39Speaker 2: on anything and these motherfuckers will buy it. So why
- 15:42Speaker 2: would they- It's an awfully cynical point of view, Dan.
- 15:44Speaker 2: But yeah, but you're right. That's what they would say
- 15:46Speaker 2: in the board meeting. The thing is, why would they
- 15:51Speaker 2: end that? If people are still watching, if there are
- 15:53Speaker 2: people out there who are still watching The New Simpsons- Sure.
- 15:56Speaker 1: Why would they end it?
- 15:57Speaker 2: Even if it becomes a Disney Plus exclusive, it's still
- 15:59Speaker 2: going to exist.
- 15:59Speaker 1: That's what I was thinking. I mean, even if the
- 16:01Speaker 1: show doesn't exist anymore. As we know it, as 20-something people.
- 16:05Speaker 1: If it's 15 specials on a year on Disney. Well,
- 16:08Speaker 1: that's the thing. Let me put it to you this way.
- 16:12Speaker 1: I'd say that Bart Simpson, or Homer Simpson, or any
- 16:15Speaker 1: of the Simpson characters, but primarily, say, Bart and Homer,
- 16:18Speaker 1: are as iconic and recognizable animated characters as, say, Mickey
- 16:22Speaker 1: Mouse is. When was the last time there was a
- 16:24Speaker 1: Mickey Mouse movie?
- 16:26Speaker 2: I thought it was Disney Plus ones, yeah.
- 16:28Speaker 1: Yeah, but.
- 16:30Speaker 2: Disney's Christmas Carol. It's all that kind of shit, yeah.
- 16:32Speaker 1: Yeah, so The Simpsons still has to exist in one
- 16:36Speaker 1: form or another because you may not see Mickey Mouse
- 16:39Speaker 1: on screen going, Hi, it's me, Mickey Mouse. That was
- 16:41Speaker 1: a pretty good one, wasn't it? It was not bad, yeah.
- 16:44Speaker 2: It wasn't bad. What's Brett Irwin? The guy, the new
- 16:47Speaker 2: voice of... Anyway, Brett. I know his name's Brett. He's
- 16:50Speaker 2: worried now.
- 16:50Speaker 1: Okay, he's shit scared. Yeah, you don't necessarily see Mickey
- 16:54Speaker 1: Mouse having adventures on screen or anything like that, but
- 16:57Speaker 1: you do see a hell of a lot of Mickey
- 16:58Speaker 1: Mouse t-shirts. And, you know, figurines and Funko Pops and
- 17:01Speaker 1: all that kind of shit. So, yeah. The Simpsons is
- 17:05Speaker 1: going to keep existing.
- 17:07Speaker 2: Whether the show ends or not.
- 17:08Speaker 1: I still don't think the show ends. I don't think
- 17:09Speaker 1: the show is going to end, but I think it'll
- 17:13Speaker 1: exist maybe in a different form or in fewer episodes
- 17:16Speaker 1: or maybe they'll just keep doing Disney Plus specials or
- 17:20Speaker 1: something like that. Who knows? But, yeah.
- 17:21Speaker 2: In some form, it'll exist. Special-wise, I think, yeah.
- 17:24Speaker 1: Correct, yeah. I can imagine, though.
- 17:27Speaker 2: The producer of Inside of You, the cameraman, when she says, yeah,
- 17:30Speaker 2: I reckon it's going to end at 40, he's sitting
- 17:31Speaker 2: there going, I'm going to clip the shit out.
- 17:34Speaker 1: Of this one. Little Edward Scissorhands over there. Yes.
- 17:39Speaker 2: So they're currently in their 37th season. Well, it's just finished,
- 17:42Speaker 2: the 37th season. Season 38 starts.
- 17:44Speaker 1: On next month. Yeah, fuck, we're in September. Wowee. Man,
- 17:47Speaker 1: this year has flown by, right? Oh my God, yeah. Yeah.
- 17:50Speaker 2: So they've contracted up to 40 seasons. She also discussed
- 17:53Speaker 2: the topic of being replaced, didn't she?
- 17:56Speaker 1: Correct. Yeah. I mean, there's a lot of talk of
- 17:59Speaker 1: AI when it comes to things these days, particularly when
- 18:02Speaker 1: it comes to the creative industries and the replacement of
- 18:05Speaker 1: voices and voice actors who have been doing the same
- 18:08Speaker 1: thing for goodness knows how long. As the body gets older,
- 18:11Speaker 1: so does the voice as well. And you can noticeably
- 18:13Speaker 1: tell in some cases. So if they want The Simpsons
- 18:16Speaker 1: to keep going ad infinitum, yeah, there's a chance that
- 18:20Speaker 1: you may have to the actor who gives the characters
- 18:23Speaker 1: these distinctive voices, or you make use of modern technology
- 18:26Speaker 1: to do so. We're still weighing up the pros and
- 18:29Speaker 1: cons of that. We did a really great interview. Well,
- 18:33Speaker 1: Dando did a really great interview. I sat next to
- 18:35Speaker 1: him while he did it. With Brent Forrester. Yeah.
- 18:38Speaker 2: Writer of Lemon of Troy.
- 18:40Speaker 1: Writer of Lemon of Troy.
- 18:41Speaker 2: Peggy's Turtle Song.
- 18:42Speaker 1: Yeah. Writer of- Homer Palooza. Affiliated with many great shows.
- 18:46Speaker 1: I went through his weekly. I was like- This guy's
- 18:48Speaker 1: done it all. This guy's just hitting them out of
- 18:51Speaker 1: the park left and right.
- 18:52Speaker 2: And to me, he's living the best life because he's
- 18:54Speaker 2: not like a household name.
- 18:56Speaker 1: Oh, no.
- 18:56Speaker 2: But he's had a solid career. He's earned enough money
- 18:58Speaker 2: to get by and be comfortable. Absolutely.
- 19:00Speaker 1: And he probably lived a fun life. Oh, absolutely. And
- 19:02Speaker 1: I get the feeling if you asked anyone in the
- 19:04Speaker 1: entertainment industry or anyone in the comedy writing industry, it's like,
- 19:07Speaker 1: what do you think of that Brent Forrester? That dude's
- 19:10Speaker 1: the shit.
- 19:11Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 19:11Speaker 1: That dude's fucking knocking it out. We talked a little
- 19:14Speaker 1: bit about AI and about the possibility of replacing... beloved
- 19:18Speaker 1: voice actors with that, they can hit the notes, but
- 19:21Speaker 1: they can't find the soul in it. Now, you know, AI,
- 19:24Speaker 1: who knows what it will be able to get up to,
- 19:25Speaker 1: I was about to say next year, but probably next week.
- 19:29Speaker 1: Will it have the soul that, say, Dan C brings
- 19:31Speaker 1: to his voice work? Unlikely not. You know, we still
- 19:36Speaker 1: need that human spark.
- 19:37Speaker 2: Yeah, because it's like, you know, voice acting is two things.
- 19:41Speaker 2: There's the voice and there's the acting.
- 19:42Speaker 1: Sure.
- 19:42Speaker 2: And AI will never be able to capture the acting because... Dan,
- 19:46Speaker 2: say for example, right? I might give him a line,
- 19:48Speaker 2: He's going to give him 20 different versions of that line.
- 19:51Speaker 1: Correct, yes.
- 19:52Speaker 2: Until they find the one that they want where AI
- 19:54Speaker 2: might try to do that but it won't quite capture
- 19:57Speaker 2: that human spirit.
- 19:58Speaker 1: No, and then, you know, how does the other actor
- 20:01Speaker 1: bounce off that? And particularly if that actor is not AI. Yeah.
- 20:05Speaker 2: There's two ways of looking at it though because there's
- 20:06Speaker 2: two ways. There's the way of looking at AI being
- 20:09Speaker 2: used from a voice actor's perspective and just a fan's perspective.
- 20:14Speaker 2: And I completely understand why voice actors would be stressing
- 20:16Speaker 2: and furious that they could be replaced by AI.
- 20:19Speaker 1: Oh, sure.
- 20:20Speaker 2: Because it's going to make them redundant, essentially, right?
- 20:23Speaker 1: If you do that.
- 20:25Speaker 2: For me, though, as a fan, if I'm watching The Simpsons,
- 20:28Speaker 2: I think I would prefer, personally, for the voices to sound.
- 20:32Speaker 1: The way they always have. The same. Yeah. Yeah.
- 20:35Speaker 2: I don't want my characters to sound like they've aged
- 20:38Speaker 2: if they haven't aged on the show.
- 20:40Speaker 1: Correct, yeah.
- 20:41Speaker 2: And that's just the selfishness coming out of me.
- 20:43Speaker 1: I think Homer and Marge look the way they do,
- 20:46Speaker 1: but the voices do sound different now.
- 20:48Speaker 2: And to the point where I put a newer one
- 20:51Speaker 2: on for the kids recently, because they've been smashing through
- 20:53Speaker 2: the golden era. So my kids are eight and five.
- 20:56Speaker 2: And Elliot said, why does Marge sound like that now?
- 21:00Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 21:01Speaker 2: Why does Homer sound like that now? Why does Mr.
- 21:03Speaker 2: Burns sound like that now? Why does Ned Flanders sound
- 21:06Speaker 2: like that now? It was all these characters. He's going,
- 21:08Speaker 2: why do they sound like that now? And I'm like,
- 21:11Speaker 2: because the people that do the voices are getting older.
- 21:13Speaker 2: And he goes, oh, why don't they get new ones?
- 21:15Speaker 2: That's just his eight-year-old mind.
- 21:17Speaker 1: Sure. He's eight. Yeah. I'm wondering how someone like Elliot
- 21:21Speaker 1: would feel about watching the very first episodes where Dan is, say,
- 21:25Speaker 1: doing that.
- 21:25Speaker 2: I was going to bring this up. He said to me,
- 21:27Speaker 2: he goes, in particular, it wasn't Homer.
- 21:30Speaker 1: It was, Mr.
- 21:30Speaker 2: Burns sounds weird in the first, in the older ones.
- 21:33Speaker 1: Okay. And he goes- Because we were just going to
- 21:35Speaker 1: watch Who Shot Mr. Burns?
- 21:37Speaker 2: And he goes, I put on a season two episode,
- 21:40Speaker 2: the blood feud, right? And he goes, Mr. Burns sounds
- 21:43Speaker 2: different in the really old looking ones. And I was like, yeah,
- 21:45Speaker 2: he does. Because the voice, the guy that does the voice,
- 21:47Speaker 2: he's still working it out. And, you know, he just
- 21:49Speaker 2: changed it. And he goes, okay. But then when I
- 21:51Speaker 2: put the new one on, he goes, it was almost
- 21:53Speaker 2: like he was going, that doesn't sound, as opposed to
- 21:56Speaker 2: it sounds different. He goes, that doesn't sound right.
- 21:57Speaker 1: Yeah. I get it. I get it. Well, I mean,
- 22:00Speaker 1: Nancy is not the only person who's talking about this.
- 22:03Speaker 1: Harry Shearer. I had a bit of a conversation about
- 22:05Speaker 1: this as well. He's been doing the rounds.
- 22:08Speaker 2: He's got something to promote. He's got a new play,
- 22:09Speaker 2: I believe.
- 22:10Speaker 1: He's doing a musical about J. Edgar Hoover. Okay. It
- 22:12Speaker 1: sounds very on brand for Harry Shearer. But something he
- 22:17Speaker 1: talks about is about AI sort of voice replacement or
- 22:21Speaker 1: anything like that. But I think something that he mentioned
- 22:24Speaker 1: as well was you've got some actors who are being
- 22:26Speaker 1: very proactive and licensing their voices to, say, AI companies.
- 22:30Speaker 1: I think McConaughey is someone who's really at the forefront
- 22:33Speaker 1: of this. He licensed his voice, which is very distinctive.
- 22:36Speaker 2: So he allows him to AI his voice?
- 22:39Speaker 1: I think, yeah. I think someone like Don Connor Hayes
- 22:41Speaker 1: being quite proactive in, yeah, licensing his voice for advertising
- 22:46Speaker 1: or just, you know, maybe future-proofing his career as well.
- 22:48Speaker 2: It's just the way of the future, I think. I
- 22:50Speaker 2: think it's going to get to a point where everyone
- 22:52Speaker 2: who's fighting against it is going to go, all right,
- 22:55Speaker 2: I'm not going to win this battle. Let's find a
- 22:57Speaker 2: middle ground here.
- 22:58Speaker 1: Yes, that's very much the case. I mean, right now
- 23:00Speaker 1: you've still got a lot of... Very anti-II people who,
- 23:04Speaker 1: particularly when creative industries come into the mix.
- 23:07Speaker 2: Okay. Were people like this when the internet first started? Say,
- 23:09Speaker 2: I'm not going to get a website. It's anti-internet. It's
- 23:11Speaker 2: going to ruin everything.
- 23:12Speaker 1: Yada, yada, yada.
- 23:13Speaker 2: No.
- 23:14Speaker 1: I think we were a bit more optimistic about that. Optimistic, yeah.
- 23:16Speaker 1: In all honesty. It's like, oh, but- Superhighway. Well, it's
- 23:19Speaker 1: like we could have both. It's like, yeah, we'll have
- 23:21Speaker 1: newspapers and then you'll get extra information on the internet.
- 23:24Speaker 1: That'll be fantastic.
- 23:25Speaker 2: Well, video stores would have been like this without streaming, right?
- 23:27Speaker 1: Wouldn't they? Oh, no. You're not going to like your streaming.
- 23:30Speaker 2: You're not going to like it. You're going to want
- 23:31Speaker 2: to stay with video stores.
- 23:32Speaker 1: Oh, no. I think with streaming, it was more like,
- 23:34Speaker 1: we're bringing the video store to you.
- 23:36Speaker 2: The video store was saying that?
- 23:38Speaker 1: Well, I think video stores were kind of history by
- 23:40Speaker 1: the time streaming came around. Okay. Yeah. But certainly with AI,
- 23:47Speaker 1: voice licensing and things like that, or even image licensing,
- 23:49Speaker 1: because this is a very early example, but I think
- 23:53Speaker 1: Bruce Willis, while he was in his phase of trying
- 23:56Speaker 1: to get as much money as he could before, you know,
- 23:58Speaker 1: thing sort of went south i think he licensed his
- 24:01Speaker 1: image and he had like a deep fake bruce willis
- 24:03Speaker 1: in some ad i mean he i think he did
- 24:06Speaker 1: he did ads as himself but i think there was
- 24:09Speaker 1: also some like russian ad where it's see it they
- 24:13Speaker 1: deep faked bruce willis's face onto some stuntman or whatever
- 24:16Speaker 1: and it was selling vodka or whatever so yeah this
- 24:19Speaker 1: is not unprecedented.
- 24:20Speaker 2: Hey maybe and Obviously, what happened to Bruce Willis, maybe
- 24:24Speaker 2: he knew and he was like, I'm not going to
- 24:25Speaker 2: be able to do this myself.
- 24:26Speaker 1: Correct.
- 24:26Speaker 2: And I want my family just to be able to
- 24:28Speaker 2: make money from- You want 1985 Bruce Willis? You can
- 24:31Speaker 2: have him, baby.
- 24:32Speaker 1: Sure.
- 24:32Speaker 2: And honestly, it sounds despicable, but as a fan, I
- 24:37Speaker 2: don't care. If the actual person themselves is willing to say, look,
- 24:41Speaker 2: I'm licensing out my face. Say Mark Hamill, for example.
- 24:45Speaker 2: Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, Harrison Ford, they all say, look,
- 24:47Speaker 2: I'm allowing Disney to do this. My estate is making...
- 24:51Speaker 2: My kids, my grandkids are going to make money from this.
- 24:53Speaker 2: I will watch a Star Wars that's deepfake if they've
- 24:56Speaker 2: approved it.
- 24:56Speaker 1: I get it. But at the same time, it really
- 24:59Speaker 1: does sort of slam the brakes on any sort of
- 25:01Speaker 1: future innovation. It does. I know. Yeah. Which.
- 25:05Speaker 2: The fandom is just like, I don't care. I get
- 25:07Speaker 2: to see Harrison Ford from 1983.
- 25:08Speaker 1: I get it. I get that. But at the same time.
- 25:10Speaker 2: There's a Catch-22.
- 25:11Speaker 1: At the same time, I would hope that there is
- 25:14Speaker 1: someone just as talented, just as charismatic... Waiting in the wings. Oh, yeah, yeah. Yeah,
- 25:19Speaker 1: to be the star of the next Star Wars movie
- 25:22Speaker 1: or something like that.
- 25:23Speaker 2: The thing is, though, eventually, the people who want the
- 25:26Speaker 2: 1983 Star Wars characters won't be around anymore, myself included.
- 25:30Speaker 2: Elliot's generation, he's watched the old Star Wars, but there's
- 25:33Speaker 2: going to be new Star Wars movies that are his
- 25:36Speaker 2: Star Wars films, right?
- 25:37Speaker 1: Oh, yeah, absolutely.
- 25:38Speaker 2: And he won't want deep fakes of Harrison Ford and
- 25:40Speaker 2: Luke Skywalker anymore. He's like, just give me the new stuff.
- 25:42Speaker 2: So there's always going to be room for new stuff,
- 25:45Speaker 2: and I think there's going to be room for... Nostalgia content.
- 25:48Speaker 1: Yes, that's the thing. But yeah, the new stuff used
- 25:51Speaker 1: to be the normal. And now it seems to me
- 25:53Speaker 1: like we might be heading to an area where the
- 25:56Speaker 1: new stuff might be more of a niche.
- 25:58Speaker 2: Well, we peaked pop culture-wise, like 20, 30 years ago.
- 26:03Speaker 1: Oh, certainly, yeah. We did it in 1986.
- 26:06Speaker 2: We're in the year of nostalgia where everyone's going, oh,
- 26:09Speaker 2: it was the best then, wasn't it? Let's just... And
- 26:12Speaker 2: everyone just seems to be so... with the state of
- 26:16Speaker 2: the world right now. They want to be taken back
- 26:17Speaker 2: to when they were a kid again.
- 26:18Speaker 1: Of course, yeah.
- 26:18Speaker 2: It's like, put a bubble around me. Remind me what
- 26:21Speaker 2: it was like to eat Froot Loops and watch Saturday
- 26:22Speaker 2: morning cartoons.
- 26:23Speaker 1: Oh, yeah. When everyone else was taking care of things
- 26:25Speaker 1: and I also knew the outcome. Yeah. That's why we
- 26:29Speaker 1: re-watch TV shows. Oh, very nice.
- 26:30Speaker 2: Because we know how it's going to end. But yeah,
- 26:32Speaker 2: so what did Harry Shearer have to say? He was
- 26:34Speaker 2: talking about the AI and he was talking about how...
- 26:37Speaker 2: It feels like when you listen to a Harry Shearer
- 26:38Speaker 2: interview now, it's like, why are you still doing The Simpsons, dude?
- 26:41Speaker 2: I mean, I know why you're doing it because it's
- 26:42Speaker 2: the easiest money you can get. I say easiest money.
- 26:45Speaker 2: I'm sure it's very hard to do the voices and whatnot,
- 26:47Speaker 2: but it's a guaranteed.
- 26:48Speaker 1: Bank, right?
- 26:50Speaker 2: But he just comes across like someone who just does
- 26:52Speaker 2: not like The Simpsons anymore. When Nancy Cartwright, for example,
- 26:55Speaker 2: comes across like someone who's embraced her persona as Bart Simpson,
- 26:59Speaker 2: and she's doing a podcast now, and she's doing the
- 27:02Speaker 2: clips of the various voices and whatnot, where Harry Shearer
- 27:04Speaker 2: feels like he could not want to be further away
- 27:06Speaker 2: from The Simpsons.
- 27:07Speaker 1: I don't want to draw comparisons between the two people
- 27:10Speaker 1: we're talking about here, but I mean, Harry Shearer also
- 27:12Speaker 1: has a lot of stuff To his name. So does
- 27:17Speaker 1: Nancy Catwright.
- 27:18Speaker 2: But, I mean, this is a guy who- She's Bart Simpson,
- 27:21Speaker 2: and the Simpsons voice actor. She did some other Disney cartoons, but.
- 27:23Speaker 1: She's the Simpsons. She's primarily known as the voice of
- 27:25Speaker 1: Bart Simpson. Whereas, yeah, Harry Shearer, he's a member of
- 27:27Speaker 1: Spinal Tap. He was on Saturday Night Live. He's part
- 27:30Speaker 1: of the Christopher Guest sort of repertory company that does
- 27:32Speaker 1: all this great improv stuff that people really love.
- 27:35Speaker 2: Dan See, the same.
- 27:36Speaker 1: Yeah, likewise. Yeah, yeah.
- 27:38Speaker 2: Hank Azari, they've starred in movies and whatnot. Correct, yeah.
- 27:40Speaker 2: I think Hank Azari's probably the biggest star out of
- 27:42Speaker 2: a lot of them.
- 27:42Speaker 1: Don't you think?
- 27:43Speaker 2: Probably.
- 27:44Speaker 1: I think Hank Azaria is someone that you would recognize as, hey,
- 27:48Speaker 1: that's Hank Azaria. Whereas Harry Shearer, it might take you
- 27:50Speaker 1: a second to go, oh yeah, it's Harry Shearer.
- 27:51Speaker 2: Isn't that the cameraman from the Godzilla in 1998?
- 27:56Speaker 1: Isn't that the guy from the Truman Show? Yes. It's
- 27:58Speaker 1: also Truman Show? Harry... Oh, Harry Shearer. Yeah.
- 28:01Speaker 2: Yeah, no, Hank Azaria.
- 28:02Speaker 1: I was like, who's Hank Azaria? Hank Azaria's in Godzilla
- 28:04Speaker 1: as well, isn't he? That's what I said. He's the cameraman. Oh, yeah. No,
- 28:07Speaker 1: but Harry Shearer is in Godzilla.
- 28:08Speaker 2: Harry Shearer, he's the smarmy news reporter.
- 28:10Speaker 1: In Godzilla. In Godzilla. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 28:12Speaker 2: Yeah, no, I said, isn't it the cameraman? That's Hank Azaria.
- 28:14Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah.
- 28:14Speaker 2: But Nancy Cartwright's in Godzilla as well.
- 28:16Speaker 1: I think Roland Emmerich must have been a citizen.
- 28:20Speaker 2: But he did say, and this is what the headline said.
- 28:23Speaker 2: It was, he goes, I don't watch the show. So
- 28:26Speaker 2: the headline is, he's starred in 800 episodes and he's
- 28:28Speaker 2: never watched it before. I'm sure it was a throwaway
- 28:31Speaker 2: comment saying I've never watched it. Of course he's watched it.
- 28:33Speaker 2: Of course he's watched The Simpsons before. But yeah, he
- 28:37Speaker 2: comes across a bit....
- 28:39Speaker 1: Grumpy's not the word. Maybe grumpy? I don't know. I mean,
- 28:42Speaker 1: I've had discussions with people... Let's be generous and say
- 28:44Speaker 1: grumpy as opposed to bitter.
- 28:46Speaker 2: I've had discussions with people who work on the show
- 28:48Speaker 2: without naming names. And they've basically said to me, yeah,
- 28:53Speaker 2: we don't really hear from him anymore. He sends in
- 28:56Speaker 2: his lines and that's pretty much it.
- 28:58Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 29:00Speaker 2: I mean, hey, why not? The guy's like 80-something, right?
- 29:03Speaker 1: Correct, yeah.
- 29:04Speaker 2: How old is Harry? I'm going to say 86. What
- 29:07Speaker 2: are you going to say?
- 29:07Speaker 1: I'm going to say 81. 81?
- 29:08Speaker 2: He's probably a bit younger than 86.
- 29:11Speaker 1: He's 82. You nearly got it.
- 29:14Speaker 2: I mean, he's 82, and he sounds 82. When you
- 29:19Speaker 2: watch New Sims, especially Mr. Burns and Flanders, you're like, oh,
- 29:21Speaker 2: and Lenny. Let's do his voice. It feels like Julie
- 29:27Speaker 2: Kavanagh's the go-to. Oh, my God, her voice sounds wrong.
- 29:30Speaker 2: Harry's voice is arguably more different.
- 29:34Speaker 1: Now, if in a perfect world, you could get Harry
- 29:39Speaker 1: or Julie. or Dan using their actor's imagination to, it's like, okay,
- 29:45Speaker 1: this is the particular spin I would put on this line,
- 29:48Speaker 1: or this is the inflection or the emphasis I would do.
- 29:51Speaker 1: And then you had wonderful AI thing that's like, okay,
- 29:54Speaker 1: I'm going to take that as is, but I'm just
- 29:57Speaker 1: going to, lower it an octave or raise it up,
- 29:59Speaker 1: raise the pitch a little bit, or I'm going to
- 30:02Speaker 1: tweak the sound so it sounds like the Simpsons of old.
- 30:04Speaker 1: I mean, would that be the perfect?
- 30:06Speaker 2: That's what I've always said. And I pitched that to
- 30:08Speaker 2: my pal, Matt Salmon. I was like, well, can't you
- 30:12Speaker 2: just sort of like tweak it? And he's like, no.
- 30:15Speaker 1: Is that out of because we don't have the tech
- 30:17Speaker 1: to do that or we've got ethical concerns or like
- 30:20Speaker 1: Harry would come to our house and murder us?
- 30:22Speaker 2: The latter, I think.
- 30:23Speaker 1: Okay.
- 30:24Speaker 2: I was like, can't you just like, they can still
- 30:25Speaker 2: act it and you can just slightly make it sound.
- 30:27Speaker 1: And he's just like, no.
- 30:29Speaker 2: I'm like, wait, he's just like, no. He's like, don't
- 30:31Speaker 2: even start.
- 30:32Speaker 1: I'm going to go back to the interview that I
- 30:35Speaker 1: always quote, the interview that I did with the late,
- 30:36Speaker 1: great Joel Schumacher. Who? Ba-dum-bum.
- 30:42Speaker 2: What did he say?
- 30:42Speaker 1: Say the line guy. I'm not going to say the
- 30:45Speaker 1: line guy. Because this is unrelated. But I think we
- 30:49Speaker 1: were talking about some of the voice work of some
- 30:52Speaker 1: of the characters in his movie. Now, I don't know
- 30:54Speaker 1: if we were talking about, again, the late, great Val Kilmer.
- 30:56Speaker 1: Holy shit, everybody's dying. About the differences between his Bruce
- 31:00Speaker 1: Wayne voice and his Batman voice. And I said, what
- 31:03Speaker 1: a wonderful sort of creative choice it was. He goes, oh, yeah,
- 31:05Speaker 1: we sort of tweaked that in post-production to make him
- 31:07Speaker 1: sound different in the way that. So, yeah, this is
- 31:10Speaker 1: something that's been done. They did this back in the 90s. So, yeah,
- 31:14Speaker 1: clearly it's a thing that happens. But I don't know.
- 31:16Speaker 2: The thing is, that's one role. And it's also not
- 31:20Speaker 2: changing a role to sound like it used to. Saying
- 31:24Speaker 2: you can't do this properly anymore.
- 31:26Speaker 1: Yeah, that's true. And if you've been associated with these
- 31:28Speaker 1: characters for goodness knows how long and they become, if
- 31:31Speaker 1: not part of your personal identity, then certainly part of
- 31:33Speaker 1: your creative identity. Yeah, you're going to be possessive about it.
- 31:36Speaker 2: And because the thing is, Val Kilmer didn't give a shit.
- 31:38Speaker 2: He's like, give me my Batman money and you can
- 31:40Speaker 2: do whatever the fuck you want with my voice.
- 31:42Speaker 1: I think Val took the word pretty seriously. But anyway.
- 31:45Speaker 2: I thought he was good as Batman, Val Kilmer.
- 31:47Speaker 1: I liked him. Yeah. I don't like Batman forever. I
- 31:50Speaker 1: don't think it's a good movie. But I like Val
- 31:52Speaker 1: Kilmer in it.
- 31:53Speaker 2: I have a nostalgia for it, which is why I
- 31:55Speaker 2: think I'd watch it with Royce into glasses.
- 31:57Speaker 1: Yeah. I'm a little freak, so I like Batman Returns.
- 32:02Speaker 2: I think Batman Forever, that's sort of Poison Ivy, right?
- 32:04Speaker 1: No, no, Batman and Robin.
- 32:05Speaker 2: That's a bit freaky as well. Like, Uma Thurman, I'm like...
- 32:08Speaker 2: They're all kind of freaky.
- 32:09Speaker 1: Yeah. Tim Burton is my kind of kink. Joel Schumacher
- 32:15Speaker 1: is other people's kind of kink. Yeah.
- 32:17Speaker 2: And Arnold Schwarzenegger's Mr. Freeze, say what you will, like,
- 32:19Speaker 2: He went for it.
- 32:21Speaker 1: Oh, I think Arnold understood the assignment. Yeah. Yeah, I
- 32:23Speaker 1: think he probably understood it better than most people in
- 32:25Speaker 1: that movie. Yeah, all right. Anyway.
- 32:28Speaker 2: But now, there's obviously, we're talking about Simpsons merch for
- 32:31Speaker 2: the Simpsons movie, but this isn't Simpsons movie related, but
- 32:33Speaker 2: there's more Simpsons merch that's been announced available at imretro.com.
- 32:38Speaker 2: And they've been doing a lot of Jack Specific's toys.
- 32:40Speaker 2: And it feels like in Australia, they've pulled the pin
- 32:42Speaker 2: on Jack Specific Australia because you can't find the shit
- 32:45Speaker 2: anywhere anymore. We have to order it from the States.
- 32:48Speaker 2: But they've released, look at this, a Stonecutter Homer figure.
- 32:51Speaker 2: A fat Tony figure. Comes with, I think it's knuckles?
- 32:55Speaker 1: Knuckle dust?
- 32:55Speaker 2: Like brass knuckles. Let's have a look. Oh no, it's
- 32:57Speaker 2: a wad of cash. So, the money. Is that all
- 33:03Speaker 2: it comes with?
- 33:03Speaker 1: Let's have a look.
- 33:05Speaker 2: Would you want to, there's a brass knuckle. There you go, yeah.
- 33:07Speaker 2: I think they look good, these figures.
- 33:10Speaker 1: Jack specific, get in touch.
- 33:12Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 33:14Speaker 1: We need to be careful how you pronounce that. I mean,
- 33:15Speaker 1: I'm sure everyone knows what Jack's Pacific is. It sounds
- 33:19Speaker 1: like we're saying Jack's Pacific. Jack specifically likes this toy. Yes, indeed.
- 33:25Speaker 2: So there's a Homer here.
- 33:26Speaker 1: I'm just thinking of a private eye called Jack's Pacific.
- 33:32Speaker 1: I've got one particular question I'd like to ask him.
- 33:35Speaker 1: That's his catchphrase. It's like fucking Columbia.
- 33:37Speaker 2: Let me get specific for a second.
- 33:42Speaker 1: Where were you on the name of the question? Specific Pacific.
- 33:46Speaker 2: This is a Ben Stiller show skit. We've done well.
- 33:49Speaker 2: Brent Boris again in touch. There's a Santa Homer. So
- 33:54Speaker 2: one of the holy grails for Simpsons collectors is they
- 33:57Speaker 2: released like a five-foot dancing Homer in the 90s, I believe,
- 34:01Speaker 2: like 98-ish, maybe early 2000, maybe 2002. And they did
- 34:04Speaker 2: a Christmas one as well. So there's like a normal
- 34:05Speaker 2: Homer who just dances and there's a Santa Homer who
- 34:08Speaker 2: dances as well. And finding one now, in general, is
- 34:12Speaker 2: impossible for sale. Finding one that works is even harder
- 34:15Speaker 2: because people are like, yeah, I've got it, but it
- 34:17Speaker 2: doesn't dance anymore. So what the release here is- Never
- 34:20Speaker 2: going to dance again. It's just a plush Homer, which
- 34:24Speaker 2: one thing I struggle with is finding Simpsons Christmas-related merch
- 34:27Speaker 2: because we love decorating the house with Christmas stuff.
- 34:29Speaker 1: No shit.
- 34:31Speaker 2: And finding Simpsons-related Christmas stuff is near impossible, but I
- 34:34Speaker 2: feel like they're getting better with it. So there's a plush,
- 34:35Speaker 2: a 10-inch- plush coming out. This is the one I'm
- 34:38Speaker 2: intrigued by though. So this is, you know, Stretch Dude.
- 34:42Speaker 2: It's a Stretch Armstrong. It actually stretches, which I think
- 34:45Speaker 2: is pretty cool. How big is this one here? It's
- 34:48Speaker 2: a 10-inch Stretch Armstrong. Is there a picture of it stretching?
- 34:51Speaker 2: Let's have a look. Surely there's a picture of it stretching, right?
- 34:54Speaker 1: There we go. Do you ever have a Stretch Armstrong
- 34:57Speaker 1: when you were a kid?
- 34:59Speaker 2: So the kids have these things called jujitsus, which are
- 35:01Speaker 2: basically licensed Stretch Armstrongs.
- 35:04Speaker 1: Okay. So it's Spider-Man. Stretches.
- 35:08Speaker 2: But they don't always stretch. Sometimes you squeeze them. They're
- 35:11Speaker 2: sensory toys, essentially.
- 35:12Speaker 1: Sure.
- 35:13Speaker 2: Which are the big thing at the moment. The kids
- 35:14Speaker 2: are all about these- Needles.
- 35:16Speaker 1: Dumplings. Oh, yes, yes, yes. Dumplings are big.
- 35:18Speaker 2: Yeah, dumplings are big. Except I said to my kids,
- 35:21Speaker 2: I'm not buying you a dumpling because I'm telling you
- 35:23Speaker 2: in like three weeks' time, kids won't want them anymore.
- 35:25Speaker 1: They will.
- 35:25Speaker 2: I'm like, remember when every kid wanted a little boo-boo?
- 35:29Speaker 2: And now you can't see them anymore. You can't buy
- 35:31Speaker 2: them anymore. No one has them anymore. Yeah, I'm like,
- 35:33Speaker 2: that'll be the dumpling. Anyway- caves, let Elliot spend some
- 35:37Speaker 2: of his birthday money in buying a dumpling, took it
- 35:39Speaker 2: to school, thought it was the greatest thing in the world.
- 35:40Speaker 2: I was like, you're taking dumplings today? And he goes, no,
- 35:42Speaker 2: no one brings dumplings to school anymore. I'm like, ah,
- 35:45Speaker 2: that took, what, fucking three days?
- 35:48Speaker 1: Let me tell you about a little thing called the slinky.
- 35:53Speaker 1: But this is cool, right? Oh, it is. And it
- 35:54Speaker 1: makes sense. He's a stretch dude. I just remember back
- 35:58Speaker 1: in the day when, you know, The only thing that
- 36:01Speaker 1: stretched was Stretch Armstrong. And that was his special powers,
- 36:03Speaker 1: that he was stretchy. Yeah.
- 36:04Speaker 2: Well, I've got an original Stretch Armstrong. Well, it's not
- 36:06Speaker 2: an original one from the 60s or whatever, but it's
- 36:08Speaker 2: based on that one. It's just an old Stretch Armstrong.
- 36:10Speaker 2: And I stretched it out for Holly. Now watch it.
- 36:13Speaker 2: And it like slowly went back.
- 36:14Speaker 1: She was like, what?
- 36:17Speaker 2: How?
- 36:19Speaker 1: Her little mind was blown.
- 36:20Speaker 2: Other figures, we've got some Halloween themed ones. We've got
- 36:22Speaker 2: Werewolf Flanders. We've got Homer is Death. And we've got
- 36:25Speaker 2: Krusty when he was doing his Halloween Krusty special. I'm
- 36:27Speaker 2: a big fan of this one here, Donut Head Homer.
- 36:29Speaker 2: Another plush toy there. And I've got this one here.
- 36:32Speaker 2: So this is Fly Bart.
- 36:34Speaker 1: Oh, yeah. I saw that.
- 36:35Speaker 2: So here is Fly Bart. I've got it right here.
- 36:37Speaker 2: I'm going to be doing an unboxing on the YouTube channel,
- 36:39Speaker 2: if you are listening out.
- 36:40Speaker 1: There, with the kiddies.
- 36:41Speaker 2: So make sure you look out for that. But what
- 36:42Speaker 2: I like about it is that it lights up.
- 36:45Speaker 1: I didn't realize.
- 36:46Speaker 2: So you put it in there, and he can turn
- 36:48Speaker 2: into Bart.
- 36:48Speaker 1: Neat. As the fly.
- 36:50Speaker 2: Clever.
- 36:51Speaker 1: Clever. Indeed. Indeed.
- 36:52Speaker 2: So lots of cool Simpsons merch coming out, which I'm
- 36:55Speaker 2: pretty excited for.
- 36:56Speaker 1: I like that they've got King Size Home.
- 36:58Speaker 2: Yeah, which is down there.
- 36:59Speaker 1: And he's, you know, he's drinking the water. And there's
- 37:04Speaker 1: a Lard Lad as well. The problem is, I used
- 37:06Speaker 1: to get all this stuff given to me by Jack's
- 37:07Speaker 1: Pacific Australia. And now they don't have Simpsons stuff in
- 37:09Speaker 1: Australia anymore.
- 37:10Speaker 2: Jack pacific america if.
- 37:12Speaker 1: You're listening send through some stuff please please do it'll
- 37:15Speaker 1: get unboxed.
- 37:16Speaker 2: But that all this is apparently exclusive to i am
- 37:18Speaker 2: retro so check out i am retro in the states
- 37:20Speaker 2: and um yeah get yourself some new simpsons merch but

- 37:32Speaker 2: the hype yes um they've Matt Groening is officially hyped.
- 37:36Speaker 2: The remaster of Sims is hit and run. In a
- 37:39Speaker 2: very Matt Groening kind of way. Well, what made me
- 37:43Speaker 2: believe it is that he didn't have a follow-up to
- 37:46Speaker 2: Matt Summers saying, or not.
- 37:47Speaker 1: He just sort of went, okay.
- 37:48Speaker 2: Glitched out. But yeah, let us know, guys, if you're
