- 0:27Hey everybody, good morning from the chicken coop.
- 0:30Today we are talking about musts versus shoulds.
- 0:34So I have noticed a pattern in myself where I will say, oh, I
- 0:41should do this. I should do this.
- 0:43And believe me, I've called this out to my coach because it
- 0:46drives me crazy and I'm not typically that person.
- 0:50I get a lot done. But I do know that there are
- 0:52times in my life when I start shooting all over myself, as we
- 0:56say. And I have noticed that it has
- 1:00been showing up with certain things that I don't like to get
- 1:03done, like paperwork. Paperwork is the bane of my
- 1:05existence. I can't stand doing paperwork,
- 1:08office work that doesn't have to do with any of my clients, but
- 1:12just has to do with all like tax stuff, you know, anything that
- 1:17has to do with stuff that you don't like to deal with.
- 1:20I hate doing it, so I wait till the last minute.
- 1:23I put it off because it's just a in my world, it's a should, but
- 1:29it's not a must. So I started thinking about this
- 1:32as I was getting ready to record a session this morning.
- 1:35And I said, you know, I should talk about this just so I can
- 1:37give myself a good reminder as well as maybe help somebody else
- 1:41out there who's doing it. So often we do this to ourselves
- 1:45where we talk about things that are important, necessary,
- 1:51urgent, however you want to look at it.
- 1:53But we assign them these things of saying, oh, well, I should do
- 1:57this, I should do this. Like I must brush my teeth
- 1:59before I go to bed. I should get up early and work
- 2:02out. Because really, nobody's going
- 2:05to know, right? At some point, it's going to
- 2:08show up eventually in the long run, but it's so far out that we
- 2:12don't worry about it because it's so far out.
- 2:14You know, the damages of not working out aren't going to
- 2:17affect you immediately as as they all say, it will take a
- 2:21little bit of time for it to show up typically.
- 2:23And because of that, we put it off and we put it off and we put
- 2:27it off because we don't have quote UN quote, the urgency for
- 2:31it. And it is not a must, it is a
- 2:33should. So for me, I know there's a,
- 2:37there's time in the year to process and do this type of
- 2:40paperwork that I don't like to do.
- 2:42So it doesn't become a must, it becomes a should.
- 2:45And when I was thinking about this today, I started saying to
- 2:48myself, OK, I have to really focus myself and get myself to
- 2:53recognize that I need to make this an absolute without
- 2:57question must. So I'm going to teach you guys
- 3:01how to do this at the same time, because anything is digestible
- 3:05when we do it in small chunks and things become a big deal
- 3:08when we make them a big deal by putting them off and not doing
- 3:11them when we are supposed to do them in a timely manner.
- 3:15And again, it could be anything when you think about it, if you,
- 3:19if you didn't have the must of brushing your teeth, Oh my gosh,
- 3:22Can you imagine how gross your mouth would be?
- 3:24By the time you know you didn't do it for a week or so, you'd be
- 3:27like, this is ridiculous. I feel absolutely disgusting.
- 3:30Most of us would feel disgusting after missing one of the times
- 3:34we do it during the day. So you have to start looking at
- 3:38the consequences of allowing something to be a should instead
- 3:42of a must. And then put together in your
- 3:46mind, what, what are those things that are a must that
- 3:49you're already doing? Like I must brush my teeth.
- 3:52I must go to sleep, I must eat food.
- 3:56Fundamental things, yes, but we make it a must and we have to do
- 4:01it. I, you know, just earlier today
- 4:03we were out, I had had only a protein shake in the morning.
- 4:07I had gone hours without anything else other than the
- 4:10protein shake. And I started to get really
- 4:13antsy, you know, hangry, if you will.
- 4:16And right away I said, I, I need to pull over and go to the gas
- 4:20station and get some nuts or something because this isn't
- 4:23going to be pretty. And I, and I knew it.
- 4:24I knew it, I felt it coming. And because there was an urgency
- 4:28with it, it went from, I should get something to eat to I must
- 4:31get something to eat. So it switches very quickly and
- 4:35we can start to follow this along in our life and see where
- 4:38else this shows up. So we can kind of bridge the gap
- 4:41and teach yourselves how to do this in all areas.
- 4:44So one of my plans is to make it a must that every month when I
- 4:49do my wrap up of a month and I say OK, because I like to
- 4:53debrief things in detail and say, OK, what worked well this
- 4:57month? What could have been better?
- 4:58What can I add in? How can I be more efficient?
- 5:01I'll look at months. I add up all the things that I
- 5:03do. Crazy about that.
- 5:04Love to give myself stickers for great jobs, but I've never
- 5:08included this particular one in it.
- 5:10So now I'm going to make it a must that every month I'm going
- 5:14to download all the information in so that I have everything
- 5:19right away. I'm not going to wait and have
- 5:21to do a year's worth it a whole time.
- 5:23Instead I'm just going to do it month by month and that will cut
- 5:26down the time and it will be painless and effortless when I
- 5:29have to just put this all together.
- 5:31Actually get software that does this.
- 5:34What a concept. So I'm telling you this and I'm
- 5:37sharing this with you, one, because I want you to know
- 5:39again, we all do these things and this is my Achilles heel, if
- 5:43you will. And two, I want you to see 99.9%
- 5:48of the time it's all these little tiny things that we can
- 5:51do quickly that will change things.
- 5:53It's not that it's big giant shoves that we need to do and
- 5:57give ourselves. It's just the small little
- 5:59things. So take that into consideration.
- 6:03Work on that. Ask yourself, what am I saying
- 6:05is a should when it could be a must or should be a must?
- 6:08There you go. Get that one.
- 6:10What are the things I want to turn into a must instead of a
- 6:13should? And really start just the whole
- 6:15process by just observing. What are you allowing yourself
- 6:18to say? I should, I should, I should
- 6:22again, shooting all over yourself and then turn those
- 6:26into must. And then let's see where you go
- 6:29from there. All right, guys, I hope you have
- 6:30a great day. Talk to you soon.
- 6:32Bye.
