Transcript
- 0:15Speaker 1: Hello, and welcome everybody to episode eighty two of Cards
- 0:19Speaker 1: and Categories. I'm Mike Coolard from Rasball, joined as always
- 0:22Speaker 1: by my very good friend Jeremy Burr, also from Rasball.
- 0:26Speaker 2: It's just the two of us tonight.
- 0:27Speaker 1: After we did all those preview pods the past six weeks,
- 0:29Speaker 1: it feels a little intimate.
- 0:31Speaker 2: You're ready for just the two of us to chat tonight.
- 0:34Speaker 3: I'm not sure. It's actually snowing outside here in Centralllinois,
- 0:37Speaker 3: so we've got a nice ambiance. So let's talk spring
- 0:39Speaker 3: training baseball baseball cards. Just you and me with little
- 0:44Speaker 3: snow in the background. It's very, very romantic, so I
- 0:46Speaker 3: think we can pull this off.
- 0:48Speaker 2: Okay, well, I'll throw a log another log on the
- 0:49Speaker 2: fireplace for us.
- 0:50Speaker 3: I appreciate it.
- 0:51Speaker 2: Yeah, all right, Well.
- 0:53Speaker 1: Since we are both from rasball, certainly do you check
- 0:56Speaker 1: out those rasball subscriptions. I'm going to link to that
- 0:58Speaker 1: in the notes here. Also check out anything else.
- 1:01Speaker 2: We're talking about.
- 1:02Speaker 1: We are going to do a show here today talking
- 1:05Speaker 1: about investments, especially at the major league level, is where
- 1:09Speaker 1: we're going to focus because hint, hint, we're coming back
- 1:11Speaker 1: for the minor league level next week. The prospect level
- 1:14Speaker 1: of card investments. So we're looking at players who either
- 1:19Speaker 1: are you know, we think they could jump forward in
- 1:22Speaker 1: terms of just notoriety or overall ability. So kind of
- 1:27Speaker 1: rounding out the previews we've done in the past few
- 1:29Speaker 1: weeks where we can go back if you want to
- 1:31Speaker 1: go back through. I think it's a great preview series
- 1:33Speaker 1: gives you. I mean we talked about like forty five
- 1:36Speaker 1: players a pod for six straight pods to give you
- 1:38Speaker 1: insights to all sorts of prospects buys sells. Certainly go
- 1:43Speaker 1: check that out and check out all the work from
- 1:45Speaker 1: all the guests we had on But as I was
- 1:47Speaker 1: saying with the ras ball connection here, certainly coick in
- 1:51Speaker 1: the show notes to get those rass Ball subscriptions. Check
- 1:55Speaker 1: out what you can sign up for the year long
- 1:58Speaker 1: is definitely the most economical option.
- 2:00Speaker 2: Will get you access to tools like the.
- 2:02Speaker 1: Hitter Tron, the streamer Nader, all of the great projections
- 2:05Speaker 1: that you can then download from the site. Also cut
- 2:08Speaker 1: down on the ads too, so lots of great benefits
- 2:12Speaker 1: if you sign up for that ras Ball subscription, we would.
- 2:14Speaker 2: Highly suggest it.
- 2:15Speaker 1: And with that too, we've got ras Slam that kicked
- 2:19Speaker 1: off literally today as we're recording here on March fifth.
- 2:23Speaker 2: It is a points based best ball league.
- 2:26Speaker 1: I know that you've been drafting here all day and
- 2:29Speaker 1: you are actually in the same league as our editor
- 2:31Speaker 1: in chief, the Mustachio Lithario himself.
- 2:34Speaker 2: Gray. Alright, so how's that been going for you?
- 2:37Speaker 3: Well, we've actually been making progress. We are just just
- 2:41Speaker 3: about in the fourth round. We've got one more pick
- 2:43Speaker 3: left from the third round, so we are flying, which
- 2:46Speaker 3: is fantastic because from my experience in the past with Raslam,
- 2:49Speaker 3: that's not always the way it goes. Sometimes you get
- 2:51Speaker 3: to the evening and you're like, okay, we're the sixth
- 2:53Speaker 3: picked overall, because you do get quite quite some time
- 2:57Speaker 3: to make your pick. I think you get four hours
- 3:00Speaker 3: to make your pick if you if you need it
- 3:02Speaker 3: at least at this point. But hey, I'm actually really excited.
- 3:05Speaker 3: I ended up with I think the tenth pick overall
- 3:09Speaker 3: in our draft, and I uh, before the Gunner Henderson
- 3:13Speaker 3: a little tweak of his news came out today, I
- 3:16Speaker 3: grabbed Gunner Henderson and followed up with the pall Skians
- 3:19Speaker 3: probably the only place I'll own Paul Skan because is
- 3:21Speaker 3: probably the only places I would actually picked him in
- 3:23Speaker 3: the second round, which I was thrilled with. But the
- 3:25Speaker 3: most exciting thing for me is to your point, our
- 3:29Speaker 3: our Edward Chief, our our guru, Gray loves Brent Rooker,
- 3:34Speaker 3: And if anybody listens to this podcast, there's another guy
- 3:37Speaker 3: that loves Brett Brooker just as much, and that's myself.
- 3:40Speaker 3: And I've got the next pick, and I'm taking Brett
- 3:43Speaker 3: Rooker before Greg gets a chance for it. And I'm
- 3:46Speaker 3: not sure if I'm picking it because he fits my
- 3:47Speaker 3: team or if I'm picking it slightly out of spite
- 3:50Speaker 3: to make sure Gray knows that I'm taking Brett Rooker.
- 3:52Speaker 3: But either way, he's gonna be on my team. And
- 3:54Speaker 3: I'm really excited about this. And I'm just waiting for
- 3:56Speaker 3: the chat, the rasball Rider Chat to to throw some
- 4:00Speaker 3: things at me when when Gray Record realizes that I've
- 4:03Speaker 3: that I've grabbed one of his, one of his boys.
- 4:05Speaker 3: So how about you? How's your drafting? Once? Have you
- 4:09Speaker 3: guys made it through three rounds yet?
- 4:11Speaker 1: No, we're stuck mid in the second. We've got it's Trust.
- 4:16Speaker 1: Matt Trust is in my league with me, as well
- 4:18Speaker 1: as Jordan White, who was on the NL Central preview
- 4:21Speaker 1: here so it's a it's kind of a funny league
- 4:23Speaker 1: of lots of Rasball lumps and there. I'm also in
- 4:26Speaker 1: the TGFBI that's going on right now that's hosted by
- 4:30Speaker 1: Justin Mason from Friends with Fantasy Benefits and Fangrafts. That
- 4:35Speaker 1: is an all industry like experts league, and I'm in
- 4:38Speaker 1: that one with Beaton from Rasball, who posts the regular
- 4:42Speaker 1: podcast that runs on Tuesdays. And it's been quite fun
- 4:47Speaker 1: in that one because we're starting to get pretty deep
- 4:49Speaker 1: where I think we're in the eighth round right now,
- 4:51Speaker 1: but Beaton and I are just sniping the hell out
- 4:54Speaker 1: of each other on all the picks because we're just
- 4:57Speaker 1: creating super ras Ball teams and it's it was It
- 5:00Speaker 1: would work great if feed On wasn't kind of sitting there.
- 5:02Speaker 1: I'm sure he's mumbling the same self stuff to himself.
- 5:06Speaker 1: As you know, we're just constantly taking i think the
- 5:10Speaker 1: next player on each other's queue out from each other.
- 5:14Speaker 3: Yeah, it's a great time. It's one of those that
- 5:16Speaker 3: you know, I actually do love slow drafts just because
- 5:20Speaker 3: it lets your draft while not taking times away from
- 5:23Speaker 3: other things going on in your life. And I think
- 5:26Speaker 3: it's absolutely fun my phone bings. I'm like, all right,
- 5:27Speaker 3: I gotta catch up what's been happening, who's been gone,
- 5:31Speaker 3: and what am I going to do next? When it
- 5:32Speaker 3: gets there? And I have yet to be sniped in
- 5:34Speaker 3: my first three rounds, I think I'll make it the
- 5:35Speaker 3: fourth as well. That's probably as far as it goes.
- 5:40Speaker 1: Counting your eggs before the chickens has there, Yeah, exactly
- 5:43Speaker 1: the other way around, the chickens for the eggsact.
- 5:46Speaker 3: You know, either way, I'm happy about it. I'm not
- 5:49Speaker 3: sure which came first, the chicken or the eggs.
- 5:51Speaker 1: And I mean, if you're still looking to get in
- 5:53Speaker 1: on some drafting action, We've still got space in our
- 5:55Speaker 1: RcLs our Raspball Commentary leagues. I will link to that
- 5:59Speaker 1: into the show notes. It's a great space to kind
- 6:01Speaker 1: of also practice drafting that it's a most of the
- 6:04Speaker 1: leagues are free, and I think there's still a few
- 6:07Speaker 1: that might have buy INDs of like ten twenty bucks.
- 6:09Speaker 1: Nothing significant, but great kind of daily moves to keep
- 6:13Speaker 1: you engaged in that in that format as well as
- 6:16Speaker 1: like there is an overall kind of bragging rights. The
- 6:18Speaker 1: way that RAS Slam is set up where all of
- 6:21Speaker 1: the RcLs are competing against each other, and I love
- 6:25Speaker 1: it just to be able to kind of practice new
- 6:27Speaker 1: team builds. I mean, it's free leagues. The rasball commenters
- 6:31Speaker 1: are sharp that, like, I am always on my toes
- 6:34Speaker 1: in these drafts and in the in the season moves
- 6:37Speaker 1: that it's great because you get you know, oddball teams
- 6:40Speaker 1: where they're maybe trying to build off of aces or
- 6:43Speaker 1: all upside or you know, just taking lots of risk
- 6:46Speaker 1: and other safer teams, and like it's great. It's a
- 6:49Speaker 1: it's a good tool to be able to help you
- 6:52Speaker 1: get into draft season here. But with that, let's maybe
- 6:55Speaker 1: get into some of the latest and greatest news that's
- 6:57Speaker 1: happened over the last week. We haven't had too much
- 6:59Speaker 1: going on, but a few moves and injuries that are
- 7:02Speaker 1: going to significantly impact our fantasy game. First one we
- 7:07Speaker 1: have is I think this was kind of in the
- 7:09Speaker 1: works when we recorded last week, but officially kind of
- 7:12Speaker 1: the signing happened since is that Kyle Finnegan is rejoining
- 7:17Speaker 1: the Washington Nationals. Should walk right in as the closer
- 7:20Speaker 1: there and be able to fill that seat that he
- 7:23Speaker 1: occupied there, even though Washington cut him in the off
- 7:27Speaker 1: season at the arbitration deadline because they didn't want to
- 7:29Speaker 1: go to arb with him, But ultimately they ended up
- 7:32Speaker 1: saving a couple million dollars bringing back Finnegan on a
- 7:36Speaker 1: one year deal. And I don't know if I want
- 7:39Speaker 1: to kind of direct this conversation just on Finn again,
- 7:42Speaker 1: because I think he is what he is at this point.
- 7:45Speaker 1: You can kind of expect him to be a mid
- 7:48Speaker 1: ish mid tier ish closer just because of availability and
- 7:52Speaker 1: that path to the job in Washington, But what are
- 7:57Speaker 1: you doing with closers? Because we haven't touched on it
- 7:59Speaker 1: too much. We've had little smatterings of the conversations through
- 8:03Speaker 1: draft season based on some of our buys and cells.
- 8:05Speaker 1: But I've found it to be one of the most
- 8:08Speaker 1: confounding markets as I've been getting into draft season, is
- 8:11Speaker 1: like how are you working your way through like the
- 8:15Speaker 1: upper tiers of the position, And then you know some
- 8:19Speaker 1: of these open jobs as well, like are you trying
- 8:21Speaker 1: to invest early and heavily or are you just gonna
- 8:24Speaker 1: leave it to scrambling on the waiver wire in your leagues?
- 8:27Speaker 3: Yeah, it is an oddynamics, like it feels like every
- 8:31Speaker 3: year there's more and more like issues with bullpens and
- 8:36Speaker 3: less guaranteed jobs. That's why actually fink And is slightly
- 8:38Speaker 3: attractive because yeah, he has he should have the job
- 8:42Speaker 3: without question. But that's like it used to be. It's like, okay,
- 8:45Speaker 3: there's twenty five closers, there's a few unsettled jobs. Now
- 8:48Speaker 3: I feel like you were lucky if we have like
- 8:50Speaker 3: ten or fifteen pretty confident jobs, and then you're kind
- 8:53Speaker 3: of chasing it. So for me, I'm still trying to
- 8:56Speaker 3: avoid the top end. I think the top is just
- 8:58Speaker 3: not the place that that I want to play it.
- 9:01Speaker 3: There's just too much other upside out there, and there's
- 9:03Speaker 3: too much volatility in any closer, let alone a pitcher
- 9:06Speaker 3: that has an arm that might want to fall off.
- 9:08Speaker 3: Plus they have a job that they could potentially lose,
- 9:12Speaker 3: And so I'm playing more in that probably you know, eight, nine,
- 9:17Speaker 3: tenth closer off the board through the fifteen seventeen, like
- 9:21Speaker 3: trying to get probably like two of those guys and
- 9:24Speaker 3: then take a few late dart throws of kind of
- 9:26Speaker 3: young up and comers, guys that I think have decent potential,
- 9:30Speaker 3: and then I'm going after a few fireballers that are
- 9:33Speaker 3: maybe a second tier second in the bullpen, and it
- 9:37Speaker 3: used to be, like I said, it used to be
- 9:39Speaker 3: like I really want three closers. I feel like now
- 9:41Speaker 3: if I can get two guys that I know have
- 9:43Speaker 3: a job and I can get some upside elsewhere, I might,
- 9:47Speaker 3: you know, stumble into some saves. I'm actually pretty happy
- 9:49Speaker 3: with that. So it's definitely changed over the years, and
- 9:52Speaker 3: I think this year's no exception. It's just you got
- 9:55Speaker 3: to be ready to snipe right in middle of the
- 9:57Speaker 3: draft and grab a few of those guys before all
- 9:59Speaker 3: of a sudden pickings get way too thin, so because
- 10:01Speaker 3: you can't be playing chickens a little bit with with
- 10:03Speaker 3: this role. So I don't about you. Are you are
- 10:05Speaker 3: you playing the high end of these guys or are
- 10:07Speaker 3: you kind of in the same boat as me.
- 10:09Speaker 1: I think I'm generally in the same boat as you.
- 10:12Speaker 1: But I mean, if some of those upper end guys
- 10:13Speaker 1: do fall a little bit, and you know, there's not
- 10:16Speaker 1: necessarily like a standout bat or I mean usually I'm
- 10:20Speaker 1: not going for a picture at that range because of
- 10:22Speaker 1: some of the just great pitching options that kind of
- 10:25Speaker 1: appear like after the sixth round. I mean, part of
- 10:29Speaker 1: it too is I think there are a lot of
- 10:30Speaker 1: land mines in that upper tier, Like most of them
- 10:33Speaker 1: were my cells when we went back through those divisional
- 10:37Speaker 1: previews between like Hater and Devin Williams and Ryan Helsley
- 10:42Speaker 1: and Felix Bautista, that there's a lot of arms there
- 10:46Speaker 1: that scare me, so I shy away from a lot
- 10:48Speaker 1: of them. But then I do come back round to
- 10:50Speaker 1: like trying to get in on like a Andre's Muno
- 10:53Speaker 1: so Hughan Duran, And then I've been loving just popping
- 10:56Speaker 1: Kenley Jansen where I can, because like at that point,
- 10:59Speaker 1: you know, I understand he could maybe not be the
- 11:02Speaker 1: great ratio ass that some of these other guys are,
- 11:05Speaker 1: but at the end of the day, it's sixty innings
- 11:07Speaker 1: and the volume of saves you get from somebody like
- 11:10Speaker 1: Jansen's fantastic. And then yeah, I think that that like
- 11:13Speaker 1: kind of tier with Jansen, with like him and Jordan Romano,
- 11:18Speaker 1: Chris Martin, Justin Martinez. There's a lot of interesting arms
- 11:21Speaker 1: on good teams too. That's the really kind of key
- 11:24Speaker 1: is I think I'm starting to once you get deeper
- 11:27Speaker 1: into the draft, trying to hone in on good teams
- 11:31Speaker 1: where it's a pretty steady closer like not playing around
- 11:34Speaker 1: with any of the closing options in Boston, not playing
- 11:38Speaker 1: around with any on the Chicago Cubs, just because, like
- 11:41Speaker 1: I think it's going to be a very volatile and
- 11:44Speaker 1: hostile closer marker all of twenty twenty five.
- 11:47Speaker 3: Yeah, I'm probably playing maybe a round or two earlier
- 11:50Speaker 3: than some of those geta mentioned like the Ryan Walker,
- 11:52Speaker 3: Pete Fairbanks type type area I think is a really
- 11:55Speaker 3: attractive area for me to like grab a few closers.
- 11:58Speaker 3: But then you're right, I'm I'm really interested in going
- 12:01Speaker 3: after some like high upside guys with like uh, you know,
- 12:05Speaker 3: even a Seth Seth Halverson in Colorado. He looks like
- 12:08Speaker 3: he could be the only Colorado picture worth draftings. I'm
- 12:11Speaker 3: not sure that that's a really great endorsement of him,
- 12:14Speaker 3: But like a Calvin Foucher, you know, even uh, you know,
- 12:20Speaker 3: a rebound from like a Bednar or something like that.
- 12:23Speaker 3: Those are all intriguing that I'm willing to try to play.
- 12:27Speaker 3: But I want to probably grab a handful of those
- 12:31Speaker 3: intriguing guys, maybe the Tyler holten over in Detroit who
- 12:34Speaker 3: likes to try to do a little bit of everything,
- 12:36Speaker 3: and he's going to back into you know, seven or
- 12:38Speaker 3: ten saves and that's better than anything else. So, uh,
- 12:42Speaker 3: definitely an interesting dynamic. Gotta have the guys got to
- 12:45Speaker 3: play for him. But I'm avoiding much of that top end, gotcha.
- 12:50Speaker 1: Okay, let's get into the next signing that we had,
- 12:53Speaker 1: and that is Jose Kintana inking a one year deal
- 12:56Speaker 1: with the Milwaukee Brewers, and so he's coming off of
- 13:00Speaker 1: a decent season with the New York Mets. I mean,
- 13:02Speaker 1: I guess part of this is also driven by I
- 13:05Speaker 1: write the waiver wire call, so he's like in terms
- 13:08Speaker 1: of like fifteen teamers and things like that. I think
- 13:10Speaker 1: this is a decent signing spot for Kintana given last year,
- 13:14Speaker 1: you know, coming off of a season with a three
- 13:16Speaker 1: seventy five VRA over one hundred and seventy third innings,
- 13:20Speaker 1: ten wins, ten losses, and just kind of like an
- 13:23Speaker 1: option is like he takes the ball every fifth day,
- 13:27Speaker 1: and like maybe you find some good matchups. I think
- 13:30Speaker 1: where I want to go with this conversation is the
- 13:33Speaker 1: Milwaukee Brewers thinned out pretty fast here. I don't know
- 13:36Speaker 1: if you've looked at their rotation since the spring has started,
- 13:40Speaker 1: but we have Aaron Ashby getting hurt again. We have
- 13:44Speaker 1: Dall Hall hitting the sixty day il today. Brandon Woodruff
- 13:47Speaker 1: still hasn't worked his way back to game action, and
- 13:51Speaker 1: that scares the living daylights out of me. So honestly,
- 13:55Speaker 1: there's a good shot Kintana sticks in this rotation for
- 13:58Speaker 1: the Brewers for a long time, given the rubber arm
- 14:01Speaker 1: that he has.
- 14:02Speaker 2: But I mean maybe you're a little bit higher on
- 14:05Speaker 2: Kingtona than I am.
- 14:06Speaker 1: But anybody else maybe in that Brewer system that is
- 14:09Speaker 1: also kind of like wow, now that I look at this,
- 14:12Speaker 1: there's maybe a pathway to some more opportunity than I
- 14:15Speaker 1: thought there was a couple of weeks ago.
- 14:17Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean I there's I would say, there's nothing
- 14:20Speaker 3: too exciting from a what's already up there. I do
- 14:24Speaker 3: still have some intrigue with Woodruff. I think he is
- 14:28Speaker 3: going to get back, and he's still young enough that
- 14:31Speaker 3: he can has a good shot, and he's always been
- 14:34Speaker 3: a workhorse so that the shoulder injuries are not easy
- 14:37Speaker 3: to get over. But I think he's got a shot there.
- 14:39Speaker 3: Probably the only guy that I'd be really too intrigued
- 14:41Speaker 3: with maybe is if like Jacob Mizerowski, you know, gets
- 14:45Speaker 3: a chance but long term, I wonder if he's gonna
- 14:48Speaker 3: be much more of a bullpen type arm. He just
- 14:52Speaker 3: he doesn't have the control that really seems like it's
- 14:54Speaker 3: gonna play in in a rotation. So I think he's
- 14:58Speaker 3: an interesting one, but beyond that, there really just isn't
- 15:03Speaker 3: a ton in that in that system right now. Like yeah,
- 15:07Speaker 3: let's it's like we were talking with the Mets and
- 15:09Speaker 3: you're like, oh, give me a brand sprout or give
- 15:10Speaker 3: me you know, see see what this means for some
- 15:13Speaker 3: of those guys, Like no, this just doesn't seem to
- 15:16Speaker 3: exist here that all the guys I would like to
- 15:18Speaker 3: see an opportunity or the guys that are heard it's
- 15:19Speaker 3: Aaron Ashby's DL hall As treverort Gazer like it's it's
- 15:23Speaker 3: those guys. So yeah, I'm I'm kind of just watching
- 15:26Speaker 3: from afar, and I I don't know if there's really
- 15:28Speaker 3: any starter that I really want to own on this team,
- 15:32Speaker 3: even like a Freddie Peralta, Like there's a lot of
- 15:34Speaker 3: warning sides with him. So I'm I'm probably, like I said,
- 15:37Speaker 3: the one I'm only interested in like Brandon Woodruff, just
- 15:39Speaker 3: because I'm the price is so cheap and if I'm wrong.
- 15:43Speaker 3: I didn't really lose out on too much like the
- 15:46Speaker 3: rest of these guys, Like I feel like I know
- 15:48Speaker 3: if I'm gonna be wrong drafting them.
- 15:50Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, I don't mind.
- 15:51Speaker 1: Like Tobias Myers, Nester Cortez, Aaron Safali is like really
- 15:55Speaker 1: late kind of round options. But I think it's gonna
- 15:58Speaker 1: be something to keep an eye on because Milwaukee he
- 16:00Speaker 1: does seem to develop pitching. We'll have to see if
- 16:03Speaker 1: maybe David Stearns was like this spur of that and
- 16:06Speaker 1: is taking it to New York with him. But if
- 16:08Speaker 1: they do develop more of these pitchers that were in
- 16:12Speaker 1: High A, Double A last year, certainly watch those minor
- 16:15Speaker 1: league stats from the Milwaukee Brewers system because they can
- 16:20Speaker 1: shoot to the majors pretty quickly, and there's a great
- 16:23Speaker 1: opportunity just with that team and the wins I think
- 16:26Speaker 1: they'll provide.
- 16:28Speaker 2: Okay, let's get.
- 16:28Speaker 1: Into a couple of injuries that we have really affecting
- 16:32Speaker 1: our fantasy pools. The first is Atlanta Braves catcher Sean
- 16:35Speaker 1: Murphy out again to start the season four to six
- 16:39Speaker 1: weeks now with a cracked rib on a hit by pitch.
- 16:42Speaker 1: I noticed you stuck this through in our Autunu draft
- 16:45Speaker 1: this past Sunday where honestly I missed this news where
- 16:49Speaker 1: Sean Murphy. I think he went down with the injury
- 16:52Speaker 1: on Friday, but we actually didn't get word until like
- 16:54Speaker 1: Monday or Tuesday that it was a cracked rib from
- 16:57Speaker 1: the Braves. But on Sunday you snuck through a one
- 17:01Speaker 1: dollar Drake Baldwin in our autonew League. Currently, it does
- 17:04Speaker 1: look like he's starting to be slated for full time
- 17:07Speaker 1: play in spring training. He's starting just about every day,
- 17:11Speaker 1: splitting it with Chadwick Trump and Kurt Casali, who are
- 17:15Speaker 1: the veterans there in camp with the Braves. But so far,
- 17:19Speaker 1: through seventeen plate appearances, Drake Baldwin slashing three h eight
- 17:23Speaker 1: four seventy one, three eighty five hasn't struck out in
- 17:26Speaker 1: those seventeen plate appearances, which you love to see. How
- 17:30Speaker 1: high is too high to take Drake Baldwin in drafts
- 17:32Speaker 1: right now in terms of catcher rankings, Yeah.
- 17:35Speaker 3: It's a really tough one because you know, the the
- 17:37Speaker 3: rib injuries, those are kind of thinicky as far as
- 17:40Speaker 3: when you might get back. They've got given Murphy quite
- 17:43Speaker 3: a bit of money, so like they they definitely want
- 17:47Speaker 3: to get something out of him. So I think, you know,
- 17:50Speaker 3: best case right now for for Baldwin is that he
- 17:52Speaker 3: does get the job out of Camp. I think it's
- 17:55Speaker 3: really going to come down to how far off to
- 17:57Speaker 3: think Sean Murphy is, Like, is he gonna be back
- 18:00Speaker 3: like two weeks in the season. That that's the case,
- 18:02Speaker 3: they probably try to use Chadwick Trump to try to
- 18:04Speaker 3: sneak by and not start the clock on Baldwin because
- 18:08Speaker 3: I think ultimately it ends up being a timeshare situation.
- 18:10Speaker 3: Is I think what happens here they try to you know,
- 18:13Speaker 3: it's there's not a whole lot of room in that
- 18:15Speaker 3: lineup from like a DH perspective. You got this Marcelo
- 18:18Speaker 3: Zuna guy that is he can't really play the field,
- 18:22Speaker 3: that never has been able to even put him in
- 18:23Speaker 3: the past, and so it's not like some other situations
- 18:27Speaker 3: where you might see like a Salvador Perez, you know,
- 18:29Speaker 3: kind of a splitting time between them things like that.
- 18:32Speaker 3: I think it ends up being pretty much a time
- 18:34Speaker 3: share between Drake Baldwin and Sean Murphy throughout the whole year,
- 18:37Speaker 3: and it just comes down to who's healthy. And unfortunately
- 18:40Speaker 3: for Baldwin, I don't think the Braves are gonna move
- 18:43Speaker 3: on from Murphy because of what they've committed to him,
- 18:46Speaker 3: and he has been pretty guys sharing good in the past.
- 18:49Speaker 3: So I think I'm excited for it because I think
- 18:52Speaker 3: Baldwin gets a shot and I'm hopeful to a degree
- 18:55Speaker 3: that he does make the opening day roster and he's
- 18:58Speaker 3: able to kind of get off to a hot start.
- 19:00Speaker 3: So that means the Braves take their time with Murphy
- 19:02Speaker 3: and then he stays in that time share. But I'm
- 19:06Speaker 3: I'm much more interesting in a long term dynasty aspect
- 19:10Speaker 3: than I am on a redraft at this point because,
- 19:12Speaker 3: like I said, I think Murphy's gonna still split time
- 19:14Speaker 3: with them throughout the season. But if you're in a
- 19:16Speaker 3: two catcher league, we split time with Baldwin might be
- 19:19Speaker 3: just as good as a lot of those second catchers.
- 19:22Speaker 1: Yeah, I think this is a great opportunity to like
- 19:24Speaker 1: maybe sneak Baldwin into the back end of a team
- 19:27Speaker 1: if you've got two catchers. And then I mean, I
- 19:30Speaker 1: guess we'll kind of see.
- 19:31Speaker 2: I want to see.
- 19:32Speaker 1: Another week of actual play with the Braves to see
- 19:36Speaker 1: how often they're running Baldwin out there compared to Trump
- 19:40Speaker 1: and Kassali and Candy Leone I think is in Camp two,
- 19:42Speaker 1: so there's a lot of catchers there. They can't sign
- 19:45Speaker 1: any there's no catchers on the market, so they're stuck here,
- 19:48Speaker 1: and so it is going to be I think if
- 19:51Speaker 1: Baldwin is playing pretty often within another week, honestly, I
- 19:56Speaker 1: might start moving him into like fifteen team terror toy
- 20:00Speaker 1: as even one catcher league that if your two catcher
- 20:03Speaker 1: league for twelve teamers. Absolutely he's got to be off
- 20:06Speaker 1: the board just given the upside.
- 20:08Speaker 3: Yep, No, I'm absolutely fine with it. I'm very happy
- 20:11Speaker 3: to own a one dollar Drake Baldwin.
- 20:13Speaker 2: That's a great pickup, great sneak.
- 20:15Speaker 1: Okay, next injury we have is I've actually got it
- 20:17Speaker 1: in our rundown as a Louis heel shoulder injury. But
- 20:20Speaker 1: I think since that piece of news came out, he's
- 20:24Speaker 1: actually been diagnosed with a strained lat in his out
- 20:27Speaker 1: six weeks.
- 20:28Speaker 2: So we touched on this a little bit. This is
- 20:31Speaker 2: pretty close to.
- 20:32Speaker 1: The Montess trade that or injury that happened the other week,
- 20:36Speaker 1: where you know, put a pitchers out six to eight
- 20:40Speaker 1: weeks to start the season. What are we doing with
- 20:42Speaker 1: them going into the season in terms of just the
- 20:45Speaker 1: injury projection, because Louis Hill is coming off a pretty
- 20:50Speaker 1: decent season, even though the walks were, you know, pretty
- 20:53Speaker 1: high at four and a half per nine, but you know,
- 20:56Speaker 1: a three fifty fifteen wins, a Rookie of the Year
- 20:59Speaker 1: with a one nineteen whippy with all those walks because
- 21:01Speaker 1: he's so nasty, the strikeouts were there for him. He
- 21:04Speaker 1: had a total of one hundred and seventy one and
- 21:06Speaker 1: one hundred and fifty one and two thirds innings. So
- 21:09Speaker 1: I was kind of intrigued in Heel as like a
- 21:12Speaker 1: kind of later strikeouts option. Now I'm totally out. This
- 21:16Speaker 1: is the type of injury where I'm totally out. I know,
- 21:20Speaker 1: you're the more kind of injury risk not adverse person,
- 21:27Speaker 1: And so is this another one where you're maybe still
- 21:30Speaker 1: stashing on the il or are you kind of starting
- 21:33Speaker 1: to get into the camp where I am where Like, honestly,
- 21:36Speaker 1: at this point in spring training, these type of guys
- 21:38Speaker 1: just don't seem to bounce back.
- 21:40Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, Louise Heel has never a kind of
- 21:42Speaker 3: guy that really fit into the profile guys I liked
- 21:45Speaker 3: in the first place. He doesn't have any control. He
- 21:50Speaker 3: relies on some bait of luck. He doesn't keep the
- 21:53Speaker 3: ball on the ground, like there's other things that don't work.
- 21:56Speaker 3: The only thing I really liked was the strikeouts. And
- 21:58Speaker 3: he plays for the Yankees, which gets some win. It's like,
- 22:01Speaker 3: and so you start to put some things that are
- 22:04Speaker 3: going to double down on, you know, keep you know,
- 22:07Speaker 3: I could see him usually flying open and put the
- 22:10Speaker 3: ball up to the zone. Double and now those fly balls,
- 22:13Speaker 3: the control is going to take time to get back.
- 22:15Speaker 3: Like I just I'm not too interested at all. I'm
- 22:19Speaker 3: I'm more interested in what's gonna happen with that Yankees rotation.
- 22:23Speaker 3: I mean, they're probably sitting there, you know, more happy
- 22:27Speaker 3: that they didn't trade Marcus Stroman. And but you know,
- 22:31Speaker 3: I'm I'm I've got i got two names I want
- 22:33Speaker 3: to throw out there for you that I'm interested in. First,
- 22:36Speaker 3: we've got Will Warren, who has looked pretty gouch starnk
- 22:39Speaker 3: good in spring training. He's he's gone through eight innings,
- 22:42Speaker 3: he's got a one thirteen eras he got one run.
- 22:46Speaker 3: Strikeouts are there. Control looks to be there, like he
- 22:50Speaker 3: looks like he's doing some some pretty good work. And
- 22:53Speaker 3: you know, he's they've got no reason to keep him
- 22:55Speaker 3: in the minors. He's twenty five years old. He's kind
- 22:58Speaker 3: of done his thing across his career. He's last year
- 23:02Speaker 3: he had one hundred and thirty Indians in the minors.
- 23:06Speaker 3: A year before he was one hundred and twenty nine.
- 23:08Speaker 3: So who's right there. So he's built up. So I
- 23:11Speaker 3: think Will Warren is gonna be a very interesting guy
- 23:14Speaker 3: and then a dark horse I got for you. And
- 23:16Speaker 3: this is much more hope than actual analysis. Is Luke Weaver.
- 23:21Speaker 3: Luke weaver history of starting isn't. I mean, he was
- 23:26Speaker 3: kind of looked like a shutout closure last year, but
- 23:29Speaker 3: he isn't in the mold of a closer. He has
- 23:31Speaker 3: multiple pitches. He just found one that was actually working
- 23:33Speaker 3: much better for him. And so he's always had that
- 23:35Speaker 3: ability to to kind of go deep into games. And
- 23:37Speaker 3: so I doubt they're gonna pull him out there. They
- 23:39Speaker 3: want him setting up for Devin Williams. I think he's
- 23:41Speaker 3: gonna be in the fireman role this year. But you know,
- 23:44Speaker 3: if I'm the Yankees and I'm looking at my options,
- 23:46Speaker 3: I'm not too excited by Marcus Stroman. I'd much rather
- 23:49Speaker 3: give a Luke Weaver run because I'm not I'm not
- 23:52Speaker 3: paying him that much. You know, he was a waiver
- 23:55Speaker 3: pick up back in twenty three, and so that or
- 23:58Speaker 3: Will Warren. So I the end of the day, I
- 24:00Speaker 3: think that from a fantasy perspective, there's some there's some
- 24:02Speaker 3: injury here.
- 24:04Speaker 1: The Will Warren call is a really good one because
- 24:06Speaker 1: Stroman does have an option that vests into.
- 24:09Speaker 2: A player option.
- 24:10Speaker 1: If he puts up one hundred and forty innings this year,
- 24:13Speaker 1: they'll be to guarantee his salary at eighteen and a
- 24:16Speaker 1: half million dollars for twenty twenty six. Pretty much means
- 24:19Speaker 1: Marcus Stroman is not throwing one hundred and forty innings
- 24:22Speaker 1: this year.
- 24:23Speaker 3: So that's that's a bad business. If they let him
- 24:25Speaker 3: throw at millions. They're just not happy right now.
- 24:28Speaker 1: Well, yeah, I mean there's there's a there's a union
- 24:30Speaker 1: grievance filing coming. But you know down the road when
- 24:34Speaker 1: Stroman is obviously held back because I mean.
- 24:37Speaker 2: He should get this fifth job.
- 24:38Speaker 1: But I wouldn't be surprised that the Yankees just go
- 24:41Speaker 1: with Bill Warren considering how electric he's looked in the spring.
- 24:44Speaker 1: That that is a I think a great call, and
- 24:47Speaker 1: from a fantasy perspective, Warren is certainly much more intriguing
- 24:50Speaker 1: than Stroman right now, just because of that upside.
- 24:52Speaker 3: Yep, absolutely so He's a guy I'm kind of watching
- 24:55Speaker 3: later in drafts seeing if I can maybe pick him
- 24:57Speaker 3: up or just see what happens, because you know, the
- 25:00Speaker 3: the downside is very very limited with Warren.
- 25:03Speaker 1: All right, let's get into another piece of news, not
- 25:06Speaker 1: an injury piece of news, I mean, could lead to
- 25:08Speaker 1: an injury maybe eventually, but we got essentially. The Astros
- 25:13Speaker 1: have come out and they've said it that this was
- 25:15Speaker 1: an intriguing kind of SoundBite that came through during the winter.
- 25:19Speaker 1: But jose Al Tuovy looks like he's slated to play
- 25:24Speaker 1: most of his games in left field now for the Astros,
- 25:27Speaker 1: which if you find video of it, it is really hilarious. Obviously,
- 25:31Speaker 1: the first like joke that was made that is it
- 25:34Speaker 1: looks like one of the kids during the home run
- 25:36Speaker 1: derby like shagging fly balls in the outfield because it's
- 25:39Speaker 1: pretty spot on. He is not the tallest sky still
- 25:42Speaker 1: and the glove is just like it's as big as
- 25:45Speaker 1: his body practically, and it looks really funny when he's
- 25:49Speaker 1: just kind of out there because it just you've not
- 25:52Speaker 1: used to it.
- 25:52Speaker 2: Jose Al Tuove, it's.
- 25:55Speaker 1: A weird move because it looks like Brendan Rodgers is
- 25:58Speaker 1: going to win that second base job and Houston, which
- 26:01Speaker 1: I mean, I'm putting a star rate next to his name.
- 26:03Speaker 1: I've always kind of liked Brendan Rodgers and didn't like
- 26:06Speaker 1: that the Rockies couldn't figure out what to do with him.
- 26:09Speaker 1: But I think my question with this is just like
- 26:13Speaker 1: what on earth?
- 26:14Speaker 2: Like, what are we doing?
- 26:16Speaker 1: What do you do with players like this where you're
- 26:17Speaker 1: making a significant change. Meryl did it, Jackson, Merril did
- 26:21Speaker 1: this last year, went to center field. But he's twenty
- 26:24Speaker 1: two years old, oh two vas thirty four and trying
- 26:28Speaker 1: to play left field.
- 26:29Speaker 3: Now, Yeah, I mean I'm not I'm not really taking
- 26:31Speaker 3: too much into account with it. Like if they're give
- 26:34Speaker 3: them the shot, they think the s and do a
- 26:36Speaker 3: two days a veteran. He's a professional hitter, So I
- 26:37Speaker 3: don't think it's gonna play on both sides of the
- 26:40Speaker 3: ball for us. If anything from a fantasy game and
- 26:42Speaker 3: gives them some positional flexibility, I think that that's actually
- 26:45Speaker 3: kind of a win. But the bigger thing I'm watching.
- 26:48Speaker 3: Is Win's Nolan Ernando going to be a hough Ston astro?
- 26:52Speaker 3: Like that's my question because like this this was the
- 26:55Speaker 3: move was they were doing this because they want to
- 26:57Speaker 3: free up third base for Bregman. Move A zc Parades
- 27:00Speaker 3: over to second and al two van left. Now they're
- 27:03Speaker 3: still moving two eight to left and they're gonna roll
- 27:05Speaker 3: out Brennan Rodgers or Mauritio Dubon, Like I don't think so.
- 27:11Speaker 3: I'm maybe I'm not as high as you and Brennan Rodgers,
- 27:13Speaker 3: but I just doesn't feel like the right move there.
- 27:15Speaker 3: And I well, I think there if they're doing it
- 27:17Speaker 3: for defensive purposes bringing in a former gold Glover at
- 27:20Speaker 3: third base, and Ernando is not too shabby the deal either.
- 27:25Speaker 1: Uh.
- 27:25Speaker 3: So I'm just waiting for that one to work out.
- 27:27Speaker 3: And I know we saw some rumors maybe a week
- 27:28Speaker 3: back that they were re engaging in talks and they
- 27:30Speaker 3: were shot down and things like that, so it doesn't
- 27:32Speaker 3: seem like that door is completely closed. And you know,
- 27:36Speaker 3: the Cardinals want to get rid of Aeronado, so gouts
- 27:39Speaker 3: turned bad. Uh, they might take Brendan Rodgers back.
- 27:42Speaker 1: So yeah, I mean, he did reject the trade to Houston,
- 27:45Speaker 1: which is a little bit of a factor. I think honestly,
- 27:48Speaker 1: one of the names that really this brings intrigue back
- 27:52Speaker 1: to you is Shay Whitcomb, who looked blocked by that
- 27:55Speaker 1: Estoc Paradus trade. He is gonna be in his age
- 27:58Speaker 1: twenty sixth season, but last year in triflea put up
- 28:01Speaker 1: two ninety three, three seventy eight, five thirty batting line,
- 28:05Speaker 1: one hundred and twenty three WRC plus with twenty five
- 28:09Speaker 1: homers twenty six stolen bases. It's somebody who lots of
- 28:13Speaker 1: like Dynasty players have been getting in on, but certainly
- 28:16Speaker 1: if Houston is opening up more space for him, I
- 28:18Speaker 1: think that becomes another name to watch as we get
- 28:21Speaker 1: into spring, because let me see their lineups over the
- 28:25Speaker 1: past couple of days. What comes playing pretty regularly at
- 28:29Speaker 1: third and then at second is Brendon. A lot of
- 28:32Speaker 1: Brandon Rodgers though, so I think it's between those two
- 28:36Speaker 1: and Dubon kind of goes back to his utility role.
- 28:39Speaker 2: But it's something to keep an eye on, is.
- 28:42Speaker 1: What the Astros are doing with Whitcomb and Rogers over
- 28:45Speaker 1: the next kind of week or so, while you're also
- 28:48Speaker 1: watching those Braves lineups for Drake Baldwin. Okay, well, we've
- 28:54Speaker 1: got a few pieces of updates to the card calendar.
- 28:59Speaker 1: We've still got those Panini products that are on there
- 29:01Speaker 1: that have been kind of slated into our news notes
- 29:04Speaker 1: for a while. If you go into those show notes now,
- 29:08Speaker 1: you'll see that we actually got a date now for
- 29:10Speaker 1: twenty twenty four Heritage High Number. It is coming out
- 29:13Speaker 1: in three weeks from when we're talking today. Slay had
- 29:16Speaker 1: come out on March twenty six. Should be an intriguing
- 29:19Speaker 1: project because our product, because it's gonna have lots of
- 29:22Speaker 1: those rookies that we had in twenty twenty four, including
- 29:25Speaker 1: Paul's Skiens and the likes. So I think there's probably
- 29:28Speaker 1: gonna be I also wonder if maybe that's part of
- 29:31Speaker 1: the reason why it took so long to get Heritage
- 29:33Speaker 1: High Number out out the doors. That there's you have
- 29:36Speaker 1: to think that the Paul Skeens on card Heritage Auto
- 29:41Speaker 1: is going to be a hot ticket as well as
- 29:43Speaker 1: probably Jackson Turio, Jackson Holiday, and Jackson Merrill. So when
- 29:49Speaker 1: they had to go out and collect all those autographs,
- 29:51Speaker 1: I think that's probably why some of these delays occurred.
- 29:54Speaker 2: With Heritage High Number.
- 29:55Speaker 3: Yep.
- 29:56Speaker 1: I've usually kind of like been shying away from the
- 29:58Speaker 1: past couple of years because it's it's also been like
- 30:01Speaker 1: tough hits in terms of heritage. But are you intrigued
- 30:05Speaker 1: by High Number coming out in a few weeks.
- 30:07Speaker 3: I'm slightly intrigued to your point. It feels like it's
- 30:10Speaker 3: gonna be a better class than it has been in
- 30:13Speaker 3: the past. There's been some pretty pretty big clunkers as
- 30:17Speaker 3: far as heritage. I had number the last few years,
- 30:19Speaker 3: and those are the products that you know, and I
- 30:22Speaker 3: don't know it's going to come out to the hobby
- 30:23Speaker 3: boxes for Heritage High Number usually in the eighty ninety
- 30:27Speaker 3: dollars range, cheaper hoppy box. But like even some of
- 30:30Speaker 3: the recent stuff like was you can find a box
- 30:32Speaker 3: for like forty bucks, you know, just a year or
- 30:35Speaker 3: two later because there's nobody. There's nobody in some of
- 30:38Speaker 3: those products, and so I'm slightly intrigued. Bicks. It can
- 30:42Speaker 3: probably be where the price point is that for me,
- 30:45Speaker 3: because it is going to be a kind of hit
- 30:46Speaker 3: or miss, Like it's one of those Viking grab it
- 30:48Speaker 3: at a good cost on a release day, I'll probably
- 30:51Speaker 3: probably give it a shot. Otherwise I'll probably wait it
- 30:53Speaker 3: out and see because it does feel like they've overproduced
- 30:56Speaker 3: it a little bit more in recent years, and so
- 30:58Speaker 3: some of those fun things heritage where you're looking for
- 31:01Speaker 3: the air cards and all those things, like it's you're
- 31:04Speaker 3: getting like one a box where it used to be
- 31:05Speaker 3: like three or four, and all you're getting is your
- 31:09Speaker 3: quasi sps, which with Heritage, I don't want to call
- 31:11Speaker 3: it sp the high number of sps that they're like,
- 31:14Speaker 3: do you get one of your two packs? So it's
- 31:16Speaker 3: not quite the same thing. So I like it, but
- 31:19Speaker 3: I'm I'm probably gonna pass unless I get, you know,
- 31:21Speaker 3: find a smoking deal on a release day.
- 31:24Speaker 2: Yeah, that totally makes sense.
- 31:26Speaker 1: Okay, Well, with that, we're going to take a short break,
- 31:28Speaker 1: but we will be back after that break to get
- 31:31Speaker 1: into some of our card buys for twenty twenty five.
- 31:34Speaker 1: Stick around, all right, Welcome back everybody from that break.
- 31:54Speaker 1: So we're going to get into some card buys and
- 31:57Speaker 1: investments here for twenty twenty five Faith focusing on major
- 32:01Speaker 1: league players and kind of up and comers for this segment.
- 32:06Speaker 1: So now is a really great time to kind of
- 32:08Speaker 1: start collecting cards of players who might break out going
- 32:13Speaker 1: into the season, because we've covered this a few times
- 32:15Speaker 1: that usually, like the card market peaks most when baseball
- 32:19Speaker 1: comes back at the beginning of the year, so like
- 32:21Speaker 1: spring training and to opening Day. There's another kind of
- 32:24Speaker 1: little peak around the All Star break in terms of
- 32:27Speaker 1: you know, the players that have made new All Star teams,
- 32:30Speaker 1: as well as just board baseball fans finding something to do,
- 32:34Speaker 1: flocking to eBay, kind of getting card collections updated. Then
- 32:38Speaker 1: usually another little bit of like a spike towards the
- 32:40Speaker 1: end of the season, getting to the playoffs because of
- 32:43Speaker 1: you know, as players round out their seasons and have
- 32:46Speaker 1: put up the numbers and people can kind of see
- 32:48Speaker 1: where they're at on leader boards, they start making investments
- 32:51Speaker 1: again as well as the playoffs just kind of drive
- 32:55Speaker 1: intrigue in the card market, as we've seen in actually
- 32:57Speaker 1: one of the guys that we're going to talk about
- 32:59Speaker 1: here this segment, but you'll see spikes in the market.
- 33:03Speaker 1: As you know, intrigue happens throughout the playoffs because players
- 33:08Speaker 1: are hitting big home runs, they're doing crazy things, winning
- 33:11Speaker 1: World Series stuff like that, and so we figured now
- 33:14Speaker 1: is a good time to focus on some players that
- 33:17Speaker 1: we're looking to invest in because the card market for
- 33:20Speaker 1: them is you know, flat, or a little bit down,
- 33:24Speaker 1: or just kind of hasn't taken off because these cards
- 33:27Speaker 1: have been either in the market for a little bit
- 33:30Speaker 1: and the players kind of cooled off from their original
- 33:33Speaker 1: prospect pet status in the greater baseball sphere, or you know,
- 33:38Speaker 1: our players that we're looking think can really break out
- 33:42Speaker 1: into another level of stardom getting into this year. So
- 33:45Speaker 1: this coincides well with all those team previews that we
- 33:47Speaker 1: did the past six weeks where we did the buys
- 33:49Speaker 1: and cells, because I think one thing that we really
- 33:52Speaker 1: kind of focus on here in this podcast is dynasty values,
- 33:57Speaker 1: fantasy values, and card values all kind of trend in
- 34:01Speaker 1: the same directions.
- 34:02Speaker 2: So you can certainly go back to.
- 34:04Speaker 1: A bunch of those divisional previews that we covered, and
- 34:07Speaker 1: I'm sure those would also be great names in terms
- 34:10Speaker 1: of the players that we're buying and selling to track
- 34:13Speaker 1: those card markets for the similar things in terms of
- 34:16Speaker 1: guys that you want to sell at peak or cards
- 34:18Speaker 1: that you want to invest in for those players.
- 34:21Speaker 2: So with that, we've.
- 34:21Speaker 1: Got three kind of main categories, and in each main category,
- 34:26Speaker 1: we've got two players that we want to highlight and
- 34:28Speaker 1: make some PC picks. So we haven't done any PC
- 34:30Speaker 1: picks in a few pods. It's been a little while,
- 34:33Speaker 1: so it'd be great to get some cards. Check out
- 34:36Speaker 1: this post on rasball dot com where you can see
- 34:38Speaker 1: pictures of all the cards and not just listen to
- 34:41Speaker 1: us talk about them.
- 34:42Speaker 2: That way you can actually get the visual.
- 34:44Speaker 1: Obviously, there's links to all this in the show notes
- 34:47Speaker 1: too if you just want to see the links to,
- 34:49Speaker 1: especially the eBay links that we're looking at for these cards. Okay,
- 34:54Speaker 1: so Brew you were the ones that kind of put
- 34:57Speaker 1: together these kind of different categories for us and different players.
- 35:00Speaker 1: So let's get into the first one, which is breakout guys, Like,
- 35:03Speaker 1: what are you looking for in a breakout player quote
- 35:07Speaker 1: unquote for card investments? Like what sort of hallmarks in
- 35:12Speaker 1: both the player themselves, their traits and their card market.
- 35:16Speaker 3: Yeah, so I for for me, you know, I'm looking
- 35:19Speaker 3: uh for guys with really just upside, That's what I'm
- 35:24Speaker 3: looking for. Guys that are going to out reform expectations.
- 35:27Speaker 3: That's really where where I'm starting. And for for guys
- 35:30Speaker 3: that are you kind of mentioned there's you know, guys
- 35:32Speaker 3: when you're getting called up and the prospects and things
- 35:34Speaker 3: like that. It's kind of predictable when they're they're gonna
- 35:36Speaker 3: pop like that when they get called up, is like,
- 35:39Speaker 3: is the the best time to to to invest to,
- 35:43Speaker 3: you know, Kurt Teil your investment and and cash in.
- 35:46Speaker 3: But for for me, as I'm looking at guys that
- 35:48Speaker 3: are already up in the majors, I'm probably I'm breaking
- 35:50Speaker 3: into a few groups like breakouts U and these are
- 35:52Speaker 3: guys that like they they've they're already there generally and
- 35:56Speaker 3: probably a little bit younger, and for whatever reason, it
- 36:00Speaker 3: feels like they haven't truly made an impact yet, they
- 36:02Speaker 3: haven't truly hit their full potential. I'm also looking at
- 36:06Speaker 3: the market they're in and maybe some of the scarcity
- 36:10Speaker 3: of their cards. And we'll talk about few guys here
- 36:11Speaker 3: that will fall into some of those those categories. I'm
- 36:15Speaker 3: also looking at guys that have had some some rough seasons,
- 36:17Speaker 3: like they might have had a down season from an
- 36:19Speaker 3: injury perspective or just an overall performance perspective, and that
- 36:24Speaker 3: I think is, you know, it was just kind of
- 36:25Speaker 3: an off year and so their card market may have
- 36:27Speaker 3: tanked because man, they're just not doing anything to do
- 36:30Speaker 3: wasn't on the national stage whatever reason, and they're primed
- 36:34Speaker 3: to be healthy and you know, kind of reclaim that
- 36:37Speaker 3: spot in the upcoming year. Those are great guys to
- 36:39Speaker 3: try to invest in. And then the last one are
- 36:41Speaker 3: really those guys that barely, you know, barely made it
- 36:44Speaker 3: to the majors. They maybe got a cup of coffee
- 36:46Speaker 3: in September, showed a little potential, but they've lost that
- 36:50Speaker 3: that that call up card, and there's you know, people
- 36:54Speaker 3: have kind of moved on because you know, they've already
- 36:56Speaker 3: been called up and they if they didn't hit the
- 36:57Speaker 3: ground running in the first month and blow over away,
- 37:00Speaker 3: I've kind of they've kind of moved on. They've kind
- 37:01Speaker 3: of forgotten about him. So those are kind of the
- 37:04Speaker 3: areas we're gonna kind of walk through here. And so
- 37:07Speaker 3: the first one we're gonna we're gonna hit is we're
- 37:09Speaker 3: gonna talk about the breakout guys. And then we talked
- 37:11Speaker 3: about in our divisional breakdowns a ton of breakout guys.
- 37:16Speaker 3: But these are the kind of guys that, like I said,
- 37:18Speaker 3: for whatever reason, they seem to be undervalued in the
- 37:20Speaker 3: fantasy drafts, and the same thing than for the card market.
- 37:25Speaker 3: Talking about guys like a Trevor Laarnich who really has
- 37:28Speaker 3: a great potential this year to bust out, and he
- 37:31Speaker 3: might you know, jump on the scene all of a sudden,
- 37:34Speaker 3: Folks are like, wait, I should pick up it up
- 37:36Speaker 3: from that guy and jump. So that's just an example.
- 37:38Speaker 3: But the two first guy we're gonna hit on today,
- 37:42Speaker 3: let's talk about Jordan Westburgh, one of my favorite breakout
- 37:46Speaker 3: guys this year. And I threw him on the list
- 37:50Speaker 3: here specifically because great breakout potential, really good team. Actually,
- 37:55Speaker 3: Baltimore card collectors, believe it or not, seem to be
- 37:59Speaker 3: pretty evasive, especially the last few years of they. I mean,
- 38:02Speaker 3: they've always loved cal Ripken, but it seems like they've
- 38:05Speaker 3: you know with the Adleys and the Jackson Holidays and
- 38:08Speaker 3: the Gunner Henderson's, and you know, everybody in that realm
- 38:11Speaker 3: is really kind of pumped up that that market. And
- 38:14Speaker 3: I think Jordan Westburg is the next guy that plays
- 38:16Speaker 3: in that that market. And his cards are gosh tarn
- 38:20Speaker 3: cheap right now. It's nobody is treating him like anything
- 38:24Speaker 3: like a Gunner Henderson. Like first moment Autumn, hundreds hundreds
- 38:27Speaker 3: of bucks. I had one sold it for twenty bucks
- 38:29Speaker 3: a few years ago. Poor life choice. But so Jordan
- 38:34Speaker 3: Westburgh's first guy, I'm gonna tsk to you to kind
- 38:37Speaker 3: of say, what card for Jordan Westburg would you be
- 38:40Speaker 3: looking to throw into your PC?
- 38:42Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 38:42Speaker 1: So what I picked here for a PC pick. It
- 38:46Speaker 1: actually goes back a little bit to that Al East
- 38:48Speaker 1: preview that we did with our boy Marmou's dad, because
- 38:52Speaker 1: he picked Jordan Westburg for his prospect pic to click
- 38:56Speaker 1: you for year Bye picked Heston Kurstad So I figured
- 39:00Speaker 1: why not combine both of them into one fantastic card.
- 39:04Speaker 1: That happened in Bowman Draft twenty twenty, And that's when
- 39:10Speaker 1: I believe they were both drafted. If I'm correct, let
- 39:13Speaker 1: me look and confirm that, yes, they were both drafted,
- 39:16Speaker 1: So they're both technically like this is a Bowman first
- 39:20Speaker 1: as well for both of them. And it's a beautiful
- 39:24Speaker 1: card from the twenty twenty Bowman Draft set. It's just
- 39:27Speaker 1: a dual franchise futures card with Heston kurst Ed signing
- 39:32Speaker 1: on the top Jordan Westberg on the bottom. And I
- 39:34Speaker 1: even picked the of twenty five version to get that
- 39:37Speaker 1: orange variation because that is like the one consistent variation.
- 39:41Speaker 1: I think across all Tops products is twenty five is orange.
- 39:45Speaker 1: And I think part of the reason why Orioles cards
- 39:48Speaker 1: are so hot is because they always pop with the
- 39:52Speaker 1: orange and black, especially when you get that in the
- 39:53Speaker 1: orange parallel. One of my main PC investments is a
- 39:57Speaker 1: pretty well centered up, pretty clean orange Manny Machado Rookie parallel.
- 40:03Speaker 1: So whenever we do have Orioles, I've noticed when I
- 40:05Speaker 1: went back through the PC list, we pick a lot
- 40:07Speaker 1: of orange Orioles cards. This is in that long list,
- 40:11Speaker 1: so that you can get two breakout candidates on one card.
- 40:15Speaker 1: You know, killed two birds with one stone. That's not
- 40:17Speaker 1: even like the correct saying anymore, because you know it's
- 40:20Speaker 1: we're anti violence nowadays. But what do you think about
- 40:23Speaker 1: this pick?
- 40:24Speaker 3: I mean, I love it all the fact that you
- 40:26Speaker 3: got another my guys in there with hesseen kearstab making
- 40:29Speaker 3: it because I think both of them actually have great
- 40:31Speaker 3: potential this year. And you're right, there's just something about
- 40:33Speaker 3: the orange with the Orioles. A love the fact that
- 40:35Speaker 3: they've got the home in the away jerseys in the
- 40:37Speaker 3: in the pictures as well. So it is a really
- 40:40Speaker 3: really clean card and I can't tell it doesn't look
- 40:43Speaker 3: like it's a sticker on it. It doesn't. I couldn't
- 40:45Speaker 3: really tell from the pictures. I didn't blow it up
- 40:49Speaker 3: large enough so I could be wrong, but I couldn't.
- 40:51Speaker 3: I didn't see. Uh, yeah, it might be an actual
- 40:55Speaker 3: on card auto.
- 40:56Speaker 1: So it's it a hard signed So yes, you're right.
- 41:00Speaker 2: I thought maybe it was a sticker at first. It
- 41:01Speaker 2: looks like it's got the spots, but I think it's
- 41:03Speaker 2: on card.
- 41:04Speaker 3: Yeah, that's what That's what I was thinking. So I
- 41:05Speaker 3: actually I love this. This pick is a really really
- 41:08Speaker 3: cool card.
- 41:09Speaker 2: All right, well book card did you pick for Jordan Weisburg.
- 41:12Speaker 3: Yeah, So I went going to caveat pretty much all
- 41:14Speaker 3: my cards here. I went with a little bit of
- 41:16Speaker 3: that investment focus as we talked about in the intro.
- 41:19Speaker 3: I wanted to pick cards that I thought would actually
- 41:21Speaker 3: pop in value themselves along within the PCs, so they
- 41:24Speaker 3: might not be in my pcso too long because I
- 41:26Speaker 3: might be cashing in. But I'm going with the twenty
- 41:30Speaker 3: twenty four Top Stadium Club Westburg rookie. But it's the
- 41:34Speaker 3: design variation for the auto INSUD of fifty and it's
- 41:39Speaker 3: a very just clean card. It's an on card auto.
- 41:42Speaker 3: I'll give Westbirds maybe a little demerit here. He doesn't
- 41:45Speaker 3: have the best auto. It's kind of just a little
- 41:47Speaker 3: bit of a scribble.
- 41:48Speaker 2: I was gonna say.
- 41:49Speaker 1: When I was looking at as auto, I was like,
- 41:50Speaker 1: the one word that comes to my mind is demure.
- 41:53Speaker 1: Like it is like the most like shy little scribble
- 41:57Speaker 1: of an auto that I've ever seen.
- 41:59Speaker 3: Yeah, it is. But like when you're talking about cards
- 42:02Speaker 3: that you're hoping pop, like if Jordan really breaks out
- 42:05Speaker 3: this year, it's gonna be rookies, it's gonna be on cards,
- 42:08Speaker 3: it's gonna be great photos. And what speaks better than
- 42:11Speaker 3: that than design variations and stadium club And so that's
- 42:14Speaker 3: kind of why I jumped on this one is right
- 42:16Speaker 3: now we buy it on eBay for seventy five bucks.
- 42:18Speaker 3: I'm sure I don't looked at Sol's. There's probably forty
- 42:20Speaker 3: fifty that you've been able to pick them up for.
- 42:22Speaker 3: And that is gonna shoot through the roof if he
- 42:25Speaker 3: does what I'm hoping that he does. So I think
- 42:28Speaker 3: it's a really clean card. I also absolutely love the
- 42:31Speaker 3: Orioles when they're wearing their orange jerseys. We just talked
- 42:34Speaker 3: about it there, so I didn't get the orange otherwise,
- 42:36Speaker 3: but the orange jersey definitely plays in this one. So
- 42:40Speaker 3: adding it out of fifty to the PC, I love it.
- 42:43Speaker 2: Great pick.
- 42:45Speaker 1: Okay, who is the next breakout guy that you have
- 42:48Speaker 1: picked for us to discuss here?
- 42:51Speaker 3: Yeah, So next guy I am going with, and I'm
- 42:53Speaker 3: gonna clarify this could be considered a Homer pick, but
- 42:57Speaker 3: I don't think it is because he's no longer on
- 42:58Speaker 3: the Cardinals. I'm going with Tommy Edmund And there's a
- 43:02Speaker 3: few reasons here. You know, Edmund did have some injury
- 43:06Speaker 3: issues last year and that kind of held him back,
- 43:08Speaker 3: so I could throw him in maybe like the guys
- 43:11Speaker 3: that had down seasons, but he came back in the
- 43:14Speaker 3: the postseason and just lit it on fire for for
- 43:17Speaker 3: the Dodgers. He was pretty got starn good. I don't
- 43:20Speaker 3: have the numbers in front of me, but yeah, he
- 43:22Speaker 3: was okay, and his card market the of any market
- 43:26Speaker 3: out there. I think the Dodgers card market is one
- 43:29Speaker 3: of the hottest out there. And that said, I also
- 43:33Speaker 3: when I look at a lot of a lot of
- 43:36Speaker 3: team collectors have to have it. I want them have
- 43:38Speaker 3: to have their guys in their jersey. It doesn't seem
- 43:41Speaker 3: to be the same way for the Dodgers, uh since
- 43:43Speaker 3: there their whole team is like this amalgamation of like
- 43:47Speaker 3: stars that started elsewhere. And so you know, Mookie Bets
- 43:51Speaker 3: in the Red Sox uniform, Freddy Freeman and the Braves
- 43:54Speaker 3: like uh O Tani, the Angels like they the collectors
- 43:58Speaker 3: don't care. They're fine with that. When a lot of
- 44:00Speaker 3: other teams, like the Yankees, just like I've got my
- 44:03Speaker 3: Derek Jeter and here's the Yankees uniform. It's got to
- 44:05Speaker 3: be that way, right, And so Edmund what's really intriguing
- 44:10Speaker 3: about him is he's in that Dodgers market. He has
- 44:13Speaker 3: a lot of potential. He should have a full time job,
- 44:15Speaker 3: and he looks to be healthy. Also, Edmund has a
- 44:19Speaker 3: very very thin card market from what from a production standpoint,
- 44:24Speaker 3: there's not been a lot out there. So when we
- 44:27Speaker 3: hit the postseason last year, his cards went, which were
- 44:30Speaker 3: always kind of high because of the limited market, they
- 44:33Speaker 3: doubled and tripled in price. And they've come back down
- 44:36Speaker 3: a decent amount, but not all the way to where
- 44:38Speaker 3: they were before then. And all it takes is a
- 44:41Speaker 3: little bit more of that magic, and we're doubling tripulently
- 44:44Speaker 3: and again. So anyway, I'm going on a on a
- 44:47Speaker 3: soapbox here, but Tommy Edmund is as a breakout for
- 44:52Speaker 3: the PC. What are you throwing in there?
- 44:55Speaker 1: Yeah, And this is a card that actually personally pulled
- 44:59Speaker 1: at one point and I sold during that Tommy had
- 45:01Speaker 1: been World Series craze that it did hurt to depart
- 45:06Speaker 1: with it because it was a beautiful card.
- 45:09Speaker 2: Is one of my favorite cards in my collection.
- 45:12Speaker 1: I'm going with the twenty twenty Stadium Club Chrome Tommy
- 45:16Speaker 1: Edmund Auto. It's just a beautiful photo of him swinging
- 45:20Speaker 1: the bat goes back to I mean almost at this point,
- 45:24Speaker 1: can't have a PC card show without picking something from
- 45:27Speaker 1: twenty twenty Stadium Club Chrome because it's just continues to
- 45:30Speaker 1: be like one of the most impressive sets that has
- 45:33Speaker 1: been released I think ever.
- 45:36Speaker 2: Like personally, it's just beautiful photographs.
- 45:39Speaker 1: This is a great shot of Tommy swinging it left
- 45:42Speaker 1: handed while in front of the crowd, and you just
- 45:45Speaker 1: it just feels like a Saint Louis Cardinals game right
- 45:48Speaker 1: in front of your face on this card. What I
- 45:51Speaker 1: also love about it is that because you talked about
- 45:55Speaker 1: this where because Edmund had a very limited number of cards,
- 46:00Speaker 1: never had a bowman first, just given that his prospect
- 46:03Speaker 1: status was never great coming up that you know, he
- 46:06Speaker 1: debuted in card sets, not that outside of minor league
- 46:11Speaker 1: cards in twenty nineteen an update and didn't have any autos,
- 46:15Speaker 1: just had kind of the base card.
- 46:17Speaker 2: So the autos that came out in twenty twenty all
- 46:20Speaker 2: have RC's on them, all rookie card designations, even though
- 46:24Speaker 2: they're technically not rookie cards, so it's kind of like
- 46:26Speaker 2: a semi error. But they're the first time he's ever
- 46:29Speaker 2: kind of had signatures on anything, any autos, on anything.
- 46:33Speaker 2: So I think it makes an.
- 46:34Speaker 1: Intriguing buy from that perspective, should be relatively affordable, and
- 46:38Speaker 1: I can tell you that this is one of those
- 46:39Speaker 1: cards that pictures will never do a justice. It looks
- 46:42Speaker 1: beautiful in person. That's why it's my choice.
- 46:45Speaker 3: Yeah, And I can't disagree because I was in the
- 46:47Speaker 3: exact same boat. I had this card, and I sold
- 46:49Speaker 3: this card at the peak of the postseason last year.
- 46:52Speaker 3: I want to say, like after his one of his
- 46:54Speaker 3: breakout games, I think I've flipped this for maybe one
- 46:57Speaker 3: hundred and twenty five dollars, when you know I probably
- 46:59Speaker 3: bought it for twenty And funny thing is we were
- 47:02Speaker 3: preparing for this this podcast. I was kind of looking
- 47:04Speaker 3: through and the link you actually have in the show notes,
- 47:08Speaker 3: I actually had favorited in my watch list on eBay
- 47:11Speaker 3: to see if I could buy my card back. That's great,
- 47:14Speaker 3: and so we'll see. I might be actually adding the
- 47:16Speaker 3: PC later later tonight, but but well, we'll see. So
- 47:22Speaker 3: I thought that was a great pick, and I might
- 47:24Speaker 3: have gone there myself myself, but since you got there first,
- 47:29Speaker 3: I went with probably the the other key Rookie Auto refractor,
- 47:36Speaker 3: which is the twenty twenty Tops Chrome Update version, and
- 47:41Speaker 3: it is a fantastic card. It's one of those back
- 47:45Speaker 3: in the twenty twenty Tops Chrome Update refractors weren't numbered.
- 47:49Speaker 3: Typically there are like out of four ninety nine. These
- 47:52Speaker 3: are not numbered, So I don't know exactly what the
- 47:54Speaker 3: prep run was. But this is absolutely sick card. I
- 47:59Speaker 3: don't know any other way to put it. Is Edmund.
- 48:02Speaker 3: He's got his full on red Cardinals Jersey. Also from
- 48:07Speaker 3: the left side of the plate in this card, I
- 48:11Speaker 3: believe it's a sticker auto. It's kind of hard to see,
- 48:14Speaker 3: but I believe it is. But it also having that
- 48:17Speaker 3: refractor just pop and he's got the meanest mug look
- 48:20Speaker 3: on his face in this one. So absolutely love it.
- 48:24Speaker 3: I'm a big sucker for twenty twenty chrome cards, you know,
- 48:28Speaker 3: as you and I both kind of got back into
- 48:30Speaker 3: the hobby around that time with with COVID, and so
- 48:33Speaker 3: I had a heck of a lot of twenty twenty cards.
- 48:35Speaker 3: I tried to do the Rainbow of Tommy Emond in
- 48:37Speaker 3: twenty twenty and it just never got there. I got
- 48:40Speaker 3: a lot of Supia Tommy Edmond cards sitting around, But
- 48:45Speaker 3: so this is another one, kind of same deal. I
- 48:48Speaker 3: believe I owned this one as well and sold at
- 48:49Speaker 3: the same time, and now I'm trying to kind of
- 48:51Speaker 3: recoup it. So I think there's maybe just a little
- 48:55Speaker 3: seller's remorse here in RPC for Tommy Edmond. But the
- 48:59Speaker 3: thing is, like, when the season starts, I think we
- 49:01Speaker 3: might be going back to the same spot where we
- 49:03Speaker 3: were in the postseason. So if you're gonna buy something
- 49:06Speaker 3: from a Tommy Edmund, especially if he's getting a full
- 49:08Speaker 3: run with the Dodgers and he does anything close to
- 49:11Speaker 3: what we've known he's been able to do with the Cardinals,
- 49:13Speaker 3: he just gets a full healthy season, He's gonna those
- 49:17Speaker 3: cards are gonna be up there for sure. Maybe not
- 49:19Speaker 3: the one hundred and twenty five dollars for a rookie
- 49:22Speaker 3: chromato like wasn't the postseason, but eighty ninety hundred bucks.
- 49:26Speaker 3: I wouldn't be shocked at all.
- 49:27Speaker 2: Yeah, exactly.
- 49:28Speaker 1: And I do think he's also one of those players
- 49:31Speaker 1: where once you get him on your team. Maybe again,
- 49:34Speaker 1: this is a little bias from our Cardinals kind of
- 49:37Speaker 1: point of view, that I think the Dodgers fans will
- 49:41Speaker 1: fall in love with him and so that will kind
- 49:43Speaker 1: of drive up the market even further. And yeah, now
- 49:47Speaker 1: is the time to get in because there just aren't
- 49:49Speaker 1: very many signed cards of Tommy Edmund out there in
- 49:52Speaker 1: the market period. And so you can even see it
- 49:54Speaker 1: a little bit when you do these eBay searches on
- 49:56Speaker 1: the two cards that we mentioned.
- 49:57Speaker 2: It's pretty shallow.
- 49:59Speaker 1: And Cardinals collectors are pretty serious, so a lot of
- 50:02Speaker 1: them have great memories of Edmund and are probably retican
- 50:05Speaker 1: to let those cards.
- 50:07Speaker 2: Go out of their PCs the way that we were.
- 50:10Speaker 1: And yeah, or maybe in the boat that we are
- 50:12Speaker 1: right now, where we're having a little bit of virus
- 50:15Speaker 1: remorse and won our cards back.
- 50:18Speaker 2: Okay, next category.
- 50:19Speaker 1: Of players that we have that you touched on with
- 50:21Speaker 1: the down season guys. So, who are some examples of
- 50:25Speaker 1: investments here for down season guys that you're looking to
- 50:27Speaker 1: buy in for for twenty twenty five.
- 50:29Speaker 3: Yeah, so's just some guys to call out in this range.
- 50:32Speaker 3: This is kind of like your Austin Riley's of the
- 50:34Speaker 3: world who definitely had a down year last year, A
- 50:36Speaker 3: Dollas Garcia, maybe a Randy rose Arena, all guys that
- 50:39Speaker 3: have had really hot card markets in the past, but
- 50:42Speaker 3: they really soured last year. To you know, Arose Arena
- 50:46Speaker 3: had a down year, got traded, Garcia just had an
- 50:49Speaker 3: off year, and Riley. I don't. I couldn't. I honestly
- 50:53Speaker 3: could not tell you what was wrong with Riley. It
- 50:54Speaker 3: looks like the exact same player. The results just weren't there,
- 50:57Speaker 3: and all of those guys, they're their markets softened considerably.
- 51:01Speaker 3: But we've got two guys that we're gonna call out here.
- 51:04Speaker 3: Let's start with a pretty well known name. I don't
- 51:07Speaker 3: know if you've heard of this guy, Mike Trout. He
- 51:10Speaker 3: was He's pretty good from what I recall, and he
- 51:14Speaker 3: started hot last year he started hot last year and
- 51:17Speaker 3: then the injury hit in his cards with just through
- 51:20Speaker 3: the basement like it was not good. Like I mean,
- 51:24Speaker 3: I have a single, actually have two Mike Trout rookie
- 51:27Speaker 3: cards in my collection. I got the Bowman Rookie and
- 51:31Speaker 3: then the Tops Rookie. And we're talking base paper rookies here.
- 51:34Speaker 3: We're not talking the chromes or anything exciting. And I
- 51:36Speaker 3: remember paying probably five hundred dollars for my Trout Rookie
- 51:39Speaker 3: and it's no, by no means like a perfect card.
- 51:42Speaker 3: And now those things are probably you know, two fifty
- 51:44Speaker 3: three hundred, which is still incredible for a paper rookie,
- 51:47Speaker 3: but it tells you how far his market has fallen.
- 51:50Speaker 3: So I think he's one of those guys that he
- 51:53Speaker 3: is a generational talent. Everybody knows that is just the
- 51:56Speaker 3: kind of recency bias, and maybe it's Otani effect like
- 52:00Speaker 3: overshadowing Trout that I do think if he's healthy, which
- 52:05Speaker 3: it's peers that he is this year, he gets, let's
- 52:07Speaker 3: call at least a half season of health and does
- 52:11Speaker 3: what Mike Trout can do playing left field, and I
- 52:15Speaker 3: think his hard market hits right back up because he
- 52:17Speaker 3: is a no doubt first ballot Hall of Famer and
- 52:22Speaker 3: you can't not have him in your PC. So with
- 52:25Speaker 3: that said, uh, there are plenty of options for Mike
- 52:28Speaker 3: Trout and I don't I don't have we added Mike
- 52:30Speaker 3: Trout to our PC. I don't think he has.
- 52:32Speaker 2: Yeah, I was thinking.
- 52:33Speaker 1: I was like, this might have also been a good
- 52:34Speaker 1: way to shoehorns and Mike Trout cards into our PC.
- 52:37Speaker 1: Because we haven't picked any, and there's thousands upon thousands
- 52:41Speaker 1: out there just about it was not easy to narrow
- 52:44Speaker 1: it down.
- 52:45Speaker 3: Yeah. So with that, where are you going with your
- 52:47Speaker 3: Mike Trout choice? Okay?
- 52:49Speaker 1: Well I decided I'd go something a little more economical,
- 52:53Speaker 1: just because, like, this is a player where the high
- 52:57Speaker 1: end gets pretty high pretty quick because of what you
- 53:01Speaker 1: just explained in terms of his Hall of Fame trajectory
- 53:03Speaker 1: and what people have been stashing away. My personal favorite
- 53:07Speaker 1: Mike Trout card is the twenty nineteen card of his
- 53:10Speaker 1: where he's making that leaking grab in front of center
- 53:14Speaker 1: field and robbing a home run. That this is kind
- 53:16Speaker 1: of one of the iconic Mike Trout plays of his
- 53:19Speaker 1: career when he went up and made this grab. Also
- 53:22Speaker 1: just absurd that you can just see the physicality of
- 53:25Speaker 1: Mike Trout within this photo.
- 53:26Speaker 2: He looks like a linebacker making this play. I'm going with.
- 53:30Speaker 1: The Tops Chrome Sapphire version of the car. You just
- 53:33Speaker 1: get add a little flare. I've even found a PSA
- 53:36Speaker 1: ten version that you can pick up. But you can
- 53:39Speaker 1: certainly pick this up cheaper if you just buy the
- 53:41Speaker 1: card raw. It was hard to find just raw versions
- 53:45Speaker 1: out there. It's kind of one of another one of
- 53:47Speaker 1: these cards that people have tucked away because I think
- 53:50Speaker 1: it is a popular card out that the twenty nineteen
- 53:53Speaker 1: design for Trout, that one, I mean, I think twenty
- 53:57Speaker 1: nineteen was a prestyle design and then two you get
- 53:59Speaker 1: this icon photo on it.
- 54:01Speaker 2: It's become a pretty popular card for collectors out there.
- 54:04Speaker 1: So, yep, that is my pick, twenty nineteen Tops Chrome
- 54:07Speaker 1: Sapphire Edition Mike Trout. That's the first Mic Trout card
- 54:10Speaker 1: in the PC.
- 54:11Speaker 2: It's official.
- 54:13Speaker 3: Yeah, So you know, I do love this card. And
- 54:17Speaker 3: I'm trying to look up the print run from a
- 54:19Speaker 3: twenty nineteen Sapphire because I know the few years before
- 54:21Speaker 3: it was like two fifteen, and I want to say
- 54:22Speaker 3: it was around three hundred.
- 54:25Speaker 2: Or still when they were really short printing it.
- 54:27Speaker 3: Yeah, so this is so when they were really short
- 54:29Speaker 3: printing it.
- 54:29Speaker 2: So I know I couldn't find too many of them
- 54:32Speaker 2: out there.
- 54:32Speaker 3: Yeah, I haven't been able to find the print run.
- 54:34Speaker 3: But like I said, the few years before, it's like
- 54:37Speaker 3: twenty sixteen, twenty seventeen, it was around two to fifty.
- 54:39Speaker 3: I think twenty eighteen twenty nineteen, I think it bumps
- 54:41Speaker 3: to about three hundred if I recall. But regardless, the
- 54:48Speaker 3: way to describe the card is absolutely right. It is
- 54:49Speaker 3: an iconic photo of Mike Trout. I have this card
- 54:52Speaker 3: in the Rainbow foil. That's my budget version, and it's
- 54:56Speaker 3: one I've I've been tempted to grade myself just because
- 54:59Speaker 3: it is such a cool card. And you know that
- 55:04Speaker 3: the sapphire aspect, I absolutely love sapphire. This is and
- 55:07Speaker 3: I think for folks that are familiar sapphire, this isn't
- 55:09Speaker 3: the blue sapphire. This is what I would actually call it,
- 55:11Speaker 3: more of the atomic version of the sapphire, because a
- 55:14Speaker 3: lot of the sapphire cards wore have that blue and
- 55:16Speaker 3: I think that started more in that twenty twenty timeframe
- 55:19Speaker 3: where they moved a more true blue for the Sapphire,
- 55:22Speaker 3: So I think it's a great pick. You had to
- 55:24Speaker 3: go high end, and I do not falster.
- 55:26Speaker 2: You for it. Excellent ware? Did you pick here?
- 55:30Speaker 3: Well? I had a little fun with this one. So
- 55:33Speaker 3: first of all, I love my Trout cards. I added
- 55:36Speaker 3: my first actual auto to my PC about two months ago,
- 55:42Speaker 3: and it's it's it's awesome to have an on card
- 55:44Speaker 3: auto for Mike Trout. But I had to go with
- 55:48Speaker 3: the twenty seventeen Tops Dynasty Patch Auto for Mike Trout.
- 55:55Speaker 3: And the version I picked is an out of ten,
- 55:57Speaker 3: so it's you know, pretty pretty cheap one about nine
- 56:00Speaker 3: hundred dollars you want to buy now on eBay. But
- 56:02Speaker 3: the reason I'm going with this one is, if you
- 56:05Speaker 3: recall back in twenty twenty one, Tops did a through
- 56:09Speaker 3: the Year's Dynasty run where they took iconic cards and
- 56:15Speaker 3: which were most all almost all one of one and
- 56:18Speaker 3: printed them on an insert card with like a border
- 56:22Speaker 3: around it that said through the years and the you
- 56:25Speaker 3: can't tell them the photo that it's not a one
- 56:27Speaker 3: of one card. And the card market has been so
- 56:31Speaker 3: messed up around these card for years that people actually
- 56:34Speaker 3: pay like fifteen twenty dollars for these, and then every
- 56:36Speaker 3: once in a while somebody pays like three hundred dollars
- 56:38Speaker 3: because somebody kind of doesn't advertise the way they probably should.
- 56:41Speaker 3: So I'm not endorsing that, but it's the kind of
- 56:44Speaker 3: kind of this folklore card for a number of players.
- 56:48Speaker 3: It's not just Mike Trout. There's a ton of them
- 56:49Speaker 3: out there, but Mike Trout is one of the better
- 56:53Speaker 3: ones in that Through the Years set in twenty twenty one,
- 56:58Speaker 3: and I wanted to fly like that card. But that
- 57:01Speaker 3: card itself I was not able to find. I don't
- 57:03Speaker 3: know that that one actually exists, because well it does exist,
- 57:06Speaker 3: it's the one of one version, so hns. I couldn't
- 57:08Speaker 3: find it, and so maybe it hasn't been pulled, who knows.
- 57:12Speaker 3: But I found the out of ten version, which is
- 57:15Speaker 3: the exact same design, just a slightly different picture of him,
- 57:19Speaker 3: And I'm like, how cool would it be to have
- 57:21Speaker 3: like that? I mean, the one on one bed, so
- 57:23Speaker 3: would be cool. But like that card where everybody's been
- 57:26Speaker 3: buying this, everybody's seen that image, tons of people have
- 57:29Speaker 3: in their collection, but I would actually have the card,
- 57:32Speaker 3: and so I stretched it a little bitcause I couldn't
- 57:34Speaker 3: find the card, but such a cool card, great patch
- 57:38Speaker 3: Auto absolutely love it. So I just liked the little
- 57:40Speaker 3: extra story that went along with it.
- 57:42Speaker 2: That's fantastic.
- 57:43Speaker 1: Yeah, I didn't realize that when you made this pick
- 57:45Speaker 1: that that's a that's a good like kind of extra
- 57:47Speaker 1: layer to this.
- 57:48Speaker 2: Honestly, the fact that this grated.
- 57:51Speaker 1: Nine and a half Beckett version of this card out
- 57:54Speaker 1: of ten on auto on card nice patch, nine hundred
- 57:59Speaker 1: bucks for Mike Trout, that shows how this used to
- 58:02Speaker 1: probably be a four thousand and five thousand dollars card right.
- 58:05Speaker 3: Absolutely, it absolutely was Like there is not a better
- 58:08Speaker 3: time right now to buy Mike Trout than than this.
- 58:11Speaker 3: I've never seen it. And you know, you look at
- 58:15Speaker 3: the guys over the years that's retired, that have been
- 58:18Speaker 3: you know, all stars, and you know the guys like
- 58:20Speaker 3: Mike Trout, the future Hall of Famers, like their cards
- 58:22Speaker 3: hold value and it even slightly goes up over time.
- 58:25Speaker 3: Like there is a ton to be said for that.
- 58:27Speaker 3: And so I don't see much like we've got to
- 58:30Speaker 3: be at the floor for Mike Trout on where his
- 58:32Speaker 3: cards are, and especially some of these niche cards, I
- 58:35Speaker 3: think you're only gonna go up. So maybe I'll put
- 58:38Speaker 3: a five dollars offer on it after we finish here.
- 58:41Speaker 3: Good fue, Okay, all right, So the next guy, I'm
- 58:46Speaker 3: gonna throw him out there and you're gonna get the pick.
- 58:48Speaker 3: Another guy that I absolutely absolutely love here Josh Young
- 58:53Speaker 3: of the Texas Rangers. He absolutely looked fantastic in twenty
- 58:57Speaker 3: twenty three. He battled injury all way through twenty twenty four,
- 59:01Speaker 3: so we add a down season, but he is an
- 59:04Speaker 3: absolute beast at the plate. He's a great glove in
- 59:07Speaker 3: the field. He plays in a good market in Texas
- 59:11Speaker 3: and on a good team, and so like, if you're
- 59:13Speaker 3: looking at a guy who could absolutely break out, absolutely
- 59:16Speaker 3: be playing the postseason in October getting that hype, I
- 59:19Speaker 3: think Josh Young is absolutely in that ballgame, and his
- 59:22Speaker 3: stuff is dirt, dirt cheap right now. I'm just shocked
- 59:26Speaker 3: by by what you can find out there. So I
- 59:29Speaker 3: had to throw him on the list because I think
- 59:30Speaker 3: there's only upside with Josh Young. Cards. Where are you
- 59:33Speaker 3: going with your Josh Young?
- 59:35Speaker 1: Yeah, this is a good way to sneak him into
- 59:38Speaker 1: this conversation after I denigrate him last week on our
- 59:41Speaker 1: West preview when he bought him and I saw him,
- 59:44Speaker 1: which I'm noting because yeah, maybe in a couple of
- 59:47Speaker 1: weeks we'll.
- 59:47Speaker 2: Just have a Joe A Dallas section.
- 59:53Speaker 3: I'll just buy his like it was the Bees, is
- 59:55Speaker 3: my league card from the Bees.
- 1:00:00Speaker 2: Cityvs.
- 1:00:01Speaker 3: I couldn't remember what was saying. I wanted to say
- 1:00:02Speaker 3: Sacramento too, but.
- 1:00:03Speaker 2: No, yeah that's the A's.
- 1:00:06Speaker 3: Now say minor league team. Sorry, sorry, sorry, sorry athletics.
- 1:00:11Speaker 2: Fancy So Josh Young I picked.
- 1:00:14Speaker 1: He does have a lot of great cards from twenty
- 1:00:16Speaker 1: twenty three and from I believe twenty twenty one was
- 1:00:19Speaker 1: his Bowman draft year. Lots of lots of cards there
- 1:00:22Speaker 1: for Young. Because he was a first round.
- 1:00:24Speaker 2: Pick, I had to go with.
- 1:00:26Speaker 1: So what I was thinking is, you know, if I
- 1:00:29Speaker 1: am a Texas Rangers collector and I wanted to put
- 1:00:35Speaker 1: myself into that mindset, I think I want to get
- 1:00:38Speaker 1: like the most Texas card that I can. And I
- 1:00:41Speaker 1: think you found it here or I found it here
- 1:00:43Speaker 1: in the uh Josh Young twenty twenty three home field
- 1:00:47Speaker 1: advantage insert rookie card that this is the We've covered
- 1:00:53Speaker 1: this the past couple of releases. That Tops rolls out
- 1:00:56Speaker 1: this quote unquote home field advantage insert which is a
- 1:00:59Speaker 1: short print slash case hit and it features lots of
- 1:01:02Speaker 1: different pictures that kind of relate to that market. And
- 1:01:05Speaker 1: they nailed it here with the Josh Young card for.
- 1:01:09Speaker 2: The Texas Rangers.
- 1:01:10Speaker 1: It's got a cowboy hat, it's got a covered wagon, it's.
- 1:01:14Speaker 2: Got an oil pumping machine thing.
- 1:01:18Speaker 1: I don't even know the official name for it, because
- 1:01:20Speaker 1: I'm not in like oil and gas, but you know
- 1:01:21Speaker 1: what I'm talking about, the Texas State Seal. And then
- 1:01:25Speaker 1: you know what, we really had to hammer it home.
- 1:01:27Speaker 1: Even though the Rangers are located in Dallas. We put
- 1:01:30Speaker 1: the Alamo on this card for you, just Texas, Texas, Texas.
- 1:01:35Speaker 1: It looks fantastic. The coloration of it all kind of
- 1:01:38Speaker 1: works too, in terms of like all the colors of
- 1:01:42Speaker 1: those little things that they put on the card with
- 1:01:44Speaker 1: Josh Young all are kind of this faded brownish color
- 1:01:48Speaker 1: and it causes Young to really pop on the card. Currently,
- 1:01:52Speaker 1: a pretty cheap home field advantage rookie card in terms
- 1:01:56Speaker 1: of going somewhere like the fifteen to twenty dollars range,
- 1:01:59Speaker 1: certainly could up if you see Young having a big season.
- 1:02:02Speaker 2: So that's my pick for Josh Young and.
- 1:02:05Speaker 3: RPC I think you did a great job, Like is
- 1:02:08Speaker 3: Texas the core? And so I had to as I
- 1:02:10Speaker 3: was looking on the side of like what does the
- 1:02:12Speaker 3: Houston home field advantage look like, because it looks like
- 1:02:14Speaker 3: Texas just tole the entire state and Houston's just got
- 1:02:18Speaker 3: like the the space shuttle going off behind all and
- 1:02:21Speaker 3: like a just kind of like a city escape from Houston.
- 1:02:25Speaker 3: I'm like, man, they did Houston dirty in this one, Like.
- 1:02:28Speaker 1: Yeah, well, it's also it's hard to emulate humidity in
- 1:02:32Speaker 1: a card.
- 1:02:34Speaker 3: It's very true. That's that. That was the foil refractor
- 1:02:37Speaker 3: part of it, I guess, But yeah, no, this is
- 1:02:40Speaker 3: like like your point, like they really went after they
- 1:02:42Speaker 3: put the Alamo in here. But the thing is like.
- 1:02:45Speaker 2: My favorite San Antonio.
- 1:02:48Speaker 3: But the side of the state, you you could absolutely
- 1:02:51Speaker 3: see Josh Young and the cowboy hat and the big
- 1:02:53Speaker 3: belt buckle like I probably could. And Josh Young is
- 1:02:56Speaker 3: also I think, very much into the hobby, which is
- 1:02:58Speaker 3: another great great part of things. He's he's been known
- 1:03:00Speaker 3: to buy his own card. So so so from my side,
- 1:03:05Speaker 3: I went to I went a little higher end here.
- 1:03:08Speaker 3: I went to twenty twenty three Tops Reverence, Rookie Patch
- 1:03:13Speaker 3: Auto out of five Josh Young on card Auto. I
- 1:03:18Speaker 3: don't know if you've played much in the Reverence space before.
- 1:03:22Speaker 3: These are cards we rarely talk about. They are in
- 1:03:26Speaker 3: the flagship products as inserts, generally out of five autos,
- 1:03:31Speaker 3: and so they're incredibly hard to find. And I actually
- 1:03:34Speaker 3: have a Reverence card in my collection Jack Flaherty that
- 1:03:37Speaker 3: I picked up maybe a year or two ago when
- 1:03:40Speaker 3: Jack Flaherty was flailing around and didn't have much of
- 1:03:43Speaker 3: a following. But they are absolutely beautiful, well put together card.
- 1:03:49Speaker 3: Some of the best designs that you see out there.
- 1:03:51Speaker 3: They are cleaning. This has got Josh Young in his
- 1:03:54Speaker 3: Red Rangers jersey. You know, the patch appears to see
- 1:03:59Speaker 3: slightly blue, so I'm not quite sure what's going on there,
- 1:04:03Speaker 3: but it is a is a beautiful card and one
- 1:04:08Speaker 3: that would absolutely be gum up any Josh Young collector's collection,
- 1:04:12Speaker 3: so I had to add it to mine as well.
- 1:04:14Speaker 2: Yeah, I think this is a great choice.
- 1:04:16Speaker 1: I didn't actually know that about Reverence, but this card
- 1:04:18Speaker 1: does have like a top Sterling feel to it, with
- 1:04:22Speaker 1: a little bit lower, tighter priced tier, and honestly looks
- 1:04:27Speaker 1: better than some of the Sterling cards that come out
- 1:04:29Speaker 1: can that almost kind of look stuffy like in terms
- 1:04:33Speaker 1: of just like they're too nice. And so this has
- 1:04:36Speaker 1: got a nice little in between. Josh Jung has a
- 1:04:39Speaker 1: beautiful autograph too. Compared to what we just said about
- 1:04:42Speaker 1: Jordan Westburg, this one is fantastic. You know, you can,
- 1:04:46Speaker 1: I like the little touch of the triangles for his
- 1:04:49Speaker 1: jas and then like Josh is written all the way out.
- 1:04:51Speaker 1: But then Young is kind of like summarized real quick.
- 1:04:55Speaker 1: You can tell that he collects cards and cares about
- 1:04:58Speaker 1: cards because he took a good, good, just like focused
- 1:05:02Speaker 1: job of making sure his auto looked fantastic on this card.
- 1:05:05Speaker 3: Yeah, it's it's absolutely great. And the thing with Josh Young,
- 1:05:08Speaker 3: if you pull like a one of one auto of his,
- 1:05:10Speaker 3: you could probably trade with Josh Young himself.
- 1:05:12Speaker 1: That's true. You can probably reach out to him. I
- 1:05:14Speaker 1: know Bobby Witt does that too. That if you do
- 1:05:16Speaker 1: find those Mike trouts on there too, Like if you
- 1:05:18Speaker 1: find a player that's a collector, really easy to get
- 1:05:21Speaker 1: a hold of them and trade it for something else.
- 1:05:24Speaker 3: Yeah, I believe I saw something Josh Young did, uh
- 1:05:27Speaker 3: where he did a kind of meet up at a
- 1:05:28Speaker 3: Rangers game with a fan or actually think it was
- 1:05:31Speaker 3: maybe it was actually a Boston game when they were
- 1:05:33Speaker 3: visiting and he fan came on the field. They you know,
- 1:05:36Speaker 3: made a trade of you know, a few game bats
- 1:05:40Speaker 3: autographed by Young and some photos and traded the card
- 1:05:43Speaker 3: for it, and you know, it's it's a really cool thing.
- 1:05:47Speaker 3: He just seems to be a really great guy. So
- 1:05:49Speaker 3: that's awesome.
- 1:05:50Speaker 1: All right, Well, let's get into our next category, which
- 1:05:52Speaker 1: is kind of like out and out young guys who
- 1:05:55Speaker 1: you know, these kind of fall into that category of
- 1:05:58Speaker 1: what we were talking about. But prospects lose their shine
- 1:06:02Speaker 1: sometimes in both dynasty keeper fantasy situations but also cards
- 1:06:06Speaker 1: where you know, players if they don't pop right away
- 1:06:09Speaker 1: and they don't reach the major leagues super quick, people
- 1:06:13Speaker 1: fade them pretty fast. They get lost in dollar boxes,
- 1:06:17Speaker 1: and they're easy to make investments and be able to
- 1:06:20Speaker 1: kind of yield some profit once they make first All
- 1:06:23Speaker 1: Star team, start making some hay and MVP votes, or
- 1:06:26Speaker 1: just kind of start really rising up the rinks. So
- 1:06:29Speaker 1: what types of players are you looking to hunt in
- 1:06:32Speaker 1: this category?
- 1:06:33Speaker 3: Yeah, so you're right, kind of guys here, like think
- 1:06:36Speaker 3: of almost any guy that got called up last year
- 1:06:38Speaker 3: and didn't burst on the scene, right, And so we're
- 1:06:40Speaker 3: talking your Jordan Walker's, your Jordan Lawler's hestin kearstats, Jordan Beck's.
- 1:06:45Speaker 3: Apparently if your name is Jordan, it works really well.
- 1:06:48Speaker 3: I didn't realize that about the list that I put together,
- 1:06:50Speaker 3: but it's like.
- 1:06:51Speaker 2: On the Jackson's Jackson and Jordana.
- 1:06:54Speaker 3: Yeah, Jackson and Jordan. That's a good investing strategy. But
- 1:06:57Speaker 3: the two guys we're going to focus on, and I'm
- 1:07:00Speaker 3: stretching one of them because I'm gonna make a call
- 1:07:02Speaker 3: here that you know, has the potential to be a
- 1:07:05Speaker 3: face forook franchise. Actually, I'd argue both of these guys
- 1:07:08Speaker 3: have that potential. And I think that there are guys
- 1:07:12Speaker 3: that maybe less in my fantasy game, but much more
- 1:07:16Speaker 3: like that hard nosed type player that team like fans
- 1:07:20Speaker 3: just fall in love with because their grit, they have
- 1:07:23Speaker 3: good defense, they they do have little things, right, Like
- 1:07:25Speaker 3: that's kind of like the Tommy Edmund we talked about,
- 1:07:27Speaker 3: Like it's that kind of player that like you resonate with.
- 1:07:29Speaker 3: He's like, that's that's the kind of player I'd be.
- 1:07:31Speaker 3: I wouldn't be the Peede Alonso matching Homers. I'm the
- 1:07:33Speaker 3: kind of the guy that's you know, got my my
- 1:07:35Speaker 3: jersey dirty, and that's the I'm hoping for the best.
- 1:07:37Speaker 3: So first guy clout here is not the biggest card
- 1:07:40Speaker 3: market going to own that. It is Connor Norby for
- 1:07:44Speaker 3: the Marlins. Norby did leave a better card market in Baltimore,
- 1:07:49Speaker 3: and I think Baltimore still regretting that trade for from
- 1:07:53Speaker 3: last year. But Norby has absolutely the potential to be
- 1:07:58Speaker 3: a breakout this year. He looked pretty good in the
- 1:08:01Speaker 3: limited sample he had with Miami just last last year,
- 1:08:06Speaker 3: so I think that he has potential to kind of,
- 1:08:09Speaker 3: you know, break out. He had seven homers, three stolen bases,
- 1:08:12Speaker 3: and thirty six games for the Marlins, and he's consistently
- 1:08:16Speaker 3: been kind of one of those you know, twenty five, fifteen,
- 1:08:19Speaker 3: twenty five, twenty kind of guys in the minor leagues
- 1:08:23Speaker 3: and again just a guy that really has a ton
- 1:08:26Speaker 3: of grits. So really excited about him. I think he's
- 1:08:29Speaker 3: going to be a guy that the Marlins rely on
- 1:08:32Speaker 3: for a number of years to come. So where did
- 1:08:35Speaker 3: you go with Connor Norby?
- 1:08:37Speaker 1: So, Connor Norby in twenty twenty five, it's going to
- 1:08:40Speaker 1: be as rookie cards, So I think we probably have
- 1:08:43Speaker 1: only scratched the surface of what our choices could be.
- 1:08:46Speaker 1: Maybe he'll have a big season or make some of
- 1:08:49Speaker 1: the rookie of the months so we can get some
- 1:08:51Speaker 1: more kind of Norby PC cards in there. But I
- 1:08:54Speaker 1: had to go with a brand new twenty twenty five
- 1:08:57Speaker 1: card that just came out a couple of weeks ago, and.
- 1:09:01Speaker 2: I really love this card. It's so beautiful.
- 1:09:04Speaker 1: It's the nineteen ninety insert autograph on card auto of
- 1:09:09Speaker 1: Connor Norby from twenty twenty five, so it's got that
- 1:09:11Speaker 1: nineteen ninety design that we covered when we did the
- 1:09:14Speaker 1: preview of Top Series one for the thirty fifth anniversary,
- 1:09:18Speaker 1: and the garish colors of the nineteen ninety borders just
- 1:09:23Speaker 1: pop with the garish colors of the Miami Marlins that
- 1:09:27Speaker 1: I think this is like a fantastic example of like
- 1:09:31Speaker 1: where it can all go right when the colors line
- 1:09:33Speaker 1: up from just like nineties design and just kind of
- 1:09:36Speaker 1: teal and black and orange and blue, and there's a
- 1:09:41Speaker 1: little yellow in here so red. I absolutely love this card,
- 1:09:44Speaker 1: and it's a great shot of Condor Norby batting. Just
- 1:09:48Speaker 1: a fantastic little pickup that I think all these like
- 1:09:51Speaker 1: nineteen ninety insert cards are going to be pretty popular
- 1:09:54Speaker 1: for the rookies given that they're on card and the
- 1:09:57Speaker 1: ninety design just looks amazing kind of in the reprints.
- 1:10:00Speaker 1: So that's where I'm going for my Connor Norby PC pick.
- 1:10:04Speaker 3: Yeah, I absolutely love it. I'm actually jealous you made
- 1:10:06Speaker 3: this pick because I I didn't look before the show
- 1:10:09Speaker 3: to see what you you had picked here, and you're right,
- 1:10:11Speaker 3: like it's I love the back in the day, the
- 1:10:14Speaker 3: framed cards, like how clean it could be. And his
- 1:10:18Speaker 3: auto is no Josh Young auto. There's there's definitely a
- 1:10:22Speaker 3: C in there, maybe an O U and that literally
- 1:10:25Speaker 3: might be it.
- 1:10:27Speaker 2: It must be an N is an M and I
- 1:10:30Speaker 2: don't know.
- 1:10:31Speaker 3: Just guess. Uh, well, don't don't go look at my card.
- 1:10:35Speaker 3: I think you got a you in there, but I
- 1:10:39Speaker 3: mean you and his name. So but I think it's
- 1:10:41Speaker 3: a great, great card. And you're absolutely right. The Marlins
- 1:10:44Speaker 3: have this that they're kind of a goofy color scheme
- 1:10:47Speaker 3: to their entire team, and with the goofy color scheme
- 1:10:50Speaker 3: of that nineteen ninety design, it just works. It just works.
- 1:10:54Speaker 3: So definitely got the retro vibe going.
- 1:10:57Speaker 2: Yeah, what was your pick?
- 1:10:58Speaker 3: Here for Connor Norby, I had to go back to
- 1:11:00Speaker 3: basics here just I don't know why, but I just
- 1:11:02Speaker 3: love this card. I went with his first Bowman Chrome Auto.
- 1:11:05Speaker 3: It's you know, it's probably like a forty dollars card,
- 1:11:07Speaker 3: nothing too exciting. It is in the Orioles jersey. I
- 1:11:10Speaker 3: didn't go with the color match or anything like that.
- 1:11:12Speaker 3: But for a guy that I think is going to
- 1:11:15Speaker 3: break out, to your point, doesn't really have much in
- 1:11:17Speaker 3: the rookie card market yet, So if you're looking to
- 1:11:19Speaker 3: kind of jump out there and buy it, the twenty
- 1:11:21Speaker 3: twenty five stuff still has the twenty twenty five price
- 1:11:23Speaker 3: point in the early sheen on it. The Bowman stuff
- 1:11:27Speaker 3: doesn't yet. So going down a little bit of a
- 1:11:30Speaker 3: limb here because I'm going to a different team's jersey.
- 1:11:33Speaker 3: But I do think Condor normally value. If I'm looking
- 1:11:37Speaker 3: for value here, the first Bowen Chrome is going to
- 1:11:40Speaker 3: be the card that pops for him when he really
- 1:11:42Speaker 3: hits a pig.
- 1:11:43Speaker 2: Yeah. I think this is a great pick.
- 1:11:45Speaker 1: You can't ever go wrong with the first Bowman Auto
- 1:11:48Speaker 1: and twenty twenty one. I did like the twenty twenty
- 1:11:51Speaker 1: one Bowman design that it kind of gets back to
- 1:11:53Speaker 1: what you're talking about with the nineties Top or the
- 1:11:56Speaker 1: nineteen to eighty tops design, where nice kind of frame
- 1:11:59Speaker 1: around the card and on top of it, great fun
- 1:12:02Speaker 1: facts on the back. I didn't know Connor Norby was
- 1:12:05Speaker 1: from Minnesota and went to Eastern Carolina University.
- 1:12:09Speaker 2: And the last little tidbit that they put on the
- 1:12:11Speaker 2: back of this card has drawn Adam Frasier comps. Nothing
- 1:12:14Speaker 2: higher praise than that.
- 1:12:16Speaker 3: No higher praise than be given. Oh geez, it's great.
- 1:12:21Speaker 1: Okay, who is the next player that you identified to
- 1:12:25Speaker 1: make some PC investments here?
- 1:12:27Speaker 3: All right? Well, this is the last one of the
- 1:12:28Speaker 3: pods tonight. We are going with a guy that I
- 1:12:31Speaker 3: know is close to your heart, and I probably picked
- 1:12:34Speaker 3: him from a slightly different lens than what you are
- 1:12:37Speaker 3: because I know you've been just talking about his potential
- 1:12:39Speaker 3: breakout from fancy perspective. I'm looking at it from one
- 1:12:42Speaker 3: of the elite defenders in the league and from a
- 1:12:46Speaker 3: pure fan perspective, fans falling in love perspective. I think
- 1:12:50Speaker 3: this guy is going to be top now. She seems
- 1:12:51Speaker 3: like a clean cut guy that just works hard and
- 1:12:55Speaker 3: then plays just amazing defense, and that is Pete Crow.
- 1:12:57Speaker 3: Armstrong of the Chicago Cubs. He just seems to have
- 1:13:02Speaker 3: that potential to really just ignite a fan base, get
- 1:13:05Speaker 3: behind him, get behind that type of play that hard
- 1:13:08Speaker 3: knows effort. So I think he also has potential to
- 1:13:12Speaker 3: do great things on the field. But I think it's
- 1:13:15Speaker 3: like he kind of hits that perfect sweet spot of effort,
- 1:13:19Speaker 3: kind of likability, big card market with the Cubs, So
- 1:13:23Speaker 3: I think there's a ton of ton of potential here
- 1:13:25Speaker 3: for his cards, even though he's in kind of the
- 1:13:28Speaker 3: newer cards that tend to be a little overprinted. So
- 1:13:31Speaker 3: with that PCA, Pete Crow Armstrong, what do you got so?
- 1:13:37Speaker 1: First, I mean, I don't know if i'd actually like
- 1:13:39Speaker 1: consider clean cut, considering like he is actually kind of
- 1:13:43Speaker 1: punk rock in terms of like he was doing the
- 1:13:45Speaker 1: bleach bond hair and he put the stars in the hair.
- 1:13:48Speaker 1: But that's actually like why I like him too, is
- 1:13:51Speaker 1: that he does have this little bit of like flare
- 1:13:54Speaker 1: to him, honestly, I think, and part of it I
- 1:13:56Speaker 1: think comes from his upbringing that I mean, he grew
- 1:14:00Speaker 1: up in Hollywood, went to Harvard Westlake with like Lucas Giolito,
- 1:14:05Speaker 1: Jack Flaherty, everybody else that they always talk about that
- 1:14:07Speaker 1: comes from there. His mother was the actress in Little
- 1:14:12Speaker 1: Big League, was Bill.
- 1:14:14Speaker 2: Haywood's mom, Ashley Crow.
- 1:14:17Speaker 1: So I've always been tracking Pete crom Armstrong from that
- 1:14:20Speaker 1: because Little Big League is, like, I mean, it's easily
- 1:14:24Speaker 1: my favorite baseball movie of all time and might be
- 1:14:26Speaker 1: just like one of my just regular favorite movies of
- 1:14:30Speaker 1: all time because you know, it's like one of those
- 1:14:31Speaker 1: movies that you see when you're eight years old and
- 1:14:34Speaker 1: you can never find a flaw in it after you
- 1:14:36Speaker 1: see it that first time. But because of that, I
- 1:14:39Speaker 1: think that like that's another level here for Pete Crow Armstrong.
- 1:14:42Speaker 1: It's not only does of everyone we've talked about here
- 1:14:44Speaker 1: tonight other than I mean Mike Trout, but like in
- 1:14:48Speaker 1: terms of the chance to be a baseball superstar and
- 1:14:51Speaker 1: like a media superstar, I think PCA could really start
- 1:14:55Speaker 1: threading that needle because I mean, he's only twenty two.
- 1:14:58Speaker 1: He can relate to some of the younger kids in
- 1:15:00Speaker 1: some of the conversations that I've had that I've seen
- 1:15:04Speaker 1: like him have in interviews from like the Cub's Caravan stuff.
- 1:15:07Speaker 1: He just is an engaging personality. So I love this
- 1:15:11Speaker 1: pick for just an investment player overall, I just had
- 1:15:15Speaker 1: to go with a little bit of a bread and
- 1:15:16Speaker 1: butter pick here he is his rookie cards were in
- 1:15:20Speaker 1: twenty twenty four. I went with the twenty twenty four
- 1:15:23Speaker 1: Golden Mirrors short print parallel because I think it gives
- 1:15:27Speaker 1: you a little flare of like that fun that PCA
- 1:15:30Speaker 1: can bring to the game where I do think that
- 1:15:32Speaker 1: he's going to add his own style to baseball overall.
- 1:15:35Speaker 2: And in this card.
- 1:15:36Speaker 1: He's warming up in like a full sweatsuit and it's
- 1:15:40Speaker 1: just like all blue just kind of captures who he is,
- 1:15:44Speaker 1: I think in terms of an approachable and just like
- 1:15:50Speaker 1: regular kind of dude vibe that like can kind of
- 1:15:53Speaker 1: really resonate with all sorts of people. And like you said,
- 1:15:57Speaker 1: great market with the Cubs in Chicago, I mean, can't
- 1:16:00Speaker 1: go wrong with investing in a Golden mere SSP of
- 1:16:03Speaker 1: any rookie card that's kind of coming through and rising
- 1:16:07Speaker 1: through baseball.
- 1:16:08Speaker 2: So that's my pick here for PCA.
- 1:16:10Speaker 3: Yeah, good pick, and even get the ivy in the
- 1:16:12Speaker 3: background this one, which is a nice little little kick nicker.
- 1:16:15Speaker 3: So yeah, I think you're absolutely right. There is something
- 1:16:18Speaker 3: the marketability of PCA is gonna be gonna be huge,
- 1:16:21Speaker 3: as you know, as long as he you know, gets
- 1:16:22Speaker 3: off the schneid here a little bit and runs and
- 1:16:26Speaker 3: does some good things, make some big plays. Yeah, I
- 1:16:28Speaker 3: think that's why I threw Pete Crow on here is.
- 1:16:31Speaker 3: I think there's a ton of potential for him, and
- 1:16:33Speaker 3: like the collect the collecting collecting community hasn't really jumped
- 1:16:37Speaker 3: on PCA too much yet at this point, So for me,
- 1:16:43Speaker 3: I had to go back. We talked about sapphire earlier
- 1:16:47Speaker 3: with with Mike Trout, and I had to go there.
- 1:16:50Speaker 3: Twenty twenty four Sapphire, Pete Crow Armstrong and the reason
- 1:16:54Speaker 3: beams As I mentioned, Sapphire went and blue posts that
- 1:16:57Speaker 3: kind of twenty nineteen timeframe and the Pete Crow Armstrong
- 1:17:03Speaker 3: blue sapphire. If we talk color matches, cubs being blue,
- 1:17:08Speaker 3: sapphire being blue, Yeah, you don't get better color matches
- 1:17:11Speaker 3: than the cubs sapphire cards. And I'm this hurts me
- 1:17:13Speaker 3: to say. It's especially when you try to collect your
- 1:17:17Speaker 3: cardinals red sapphire cards that are only out of five,
- 1:17:22Speaker 3: so I have none. But when when I when I
- 1:17:25Speaker 3: look at Pete Crow in this you know, great up
- 1:17:28Speaker 3: front up close picture of him and Batty's dance. I
- 1:17:32Speaker 3: got the left go of it up there, and just
- 1:17:35Speaker 3: again the color match is just unbelievable. The other little
- 1:17:38Speaker 3: little thing I love about this card, Crow Armstrong, is
- 1:17:42Speaker 3: not the shortest last name, and you can actually see it.
- 1:17:45Speaker 3: You see this as a front shot and you can
- 1:17:47Speaker 3: actually see the name like mid back wrapping around because
- 1:17:51Speaker 3: of that, So I thought that was also hilarious as well.
- 1:17:53Speaker 3: So this is just great.
- 1:17:54Speaker 1: I was going to call that out if you passed
- 1:17:56Speaker 1: it over to me and didn't call that out, because
- 1:17:58Speaker 1: that is, like, it is a very unique thing I
- 1:18:00Speaker 1: think about PCA, and now that they also have like
- 1:18:03Speaker 1: the normal sized letters back on their jerseys, like it's
- 1:18:06Speaker 1: gonna be fascinating to see how they fit Crow Armstrong
- 1:18:09Speaker 1: on this.
- 1:18:11Speaker 3: Yeah, this is probably the only time in our podcast
- 1:18:13Speaker 3: that we've ever been able to talk about Jared Salt Tolmachia.
- 1:18:16Speaker 3: So I had to throw, you know, at least get
- 1:18:18Speaker 3: that in there, because that's one of the best parts
- 1:18:19Speaker 3: of you know, little weird things about baseball. You actually
- 1:18:22Speaker 3: my p Crow Armstrong just doesn't it rolls off, the
- 1:18:25Speaker 3: tongue doesn't stick on a jersey. So well, but yeah,
- 1:18:28Speaker 3: this lots of lots of fun cards today added to
- 1:18:31Speaker 3: the PC finishing it out with a cub even though
- 1:18:34Speaker 3: maybe not my favorite thing to do, but I know
- 1:18:37Speaker 3: you being up there in Chicago have to absolutely love
- 1:18:39Speaker 3: these ones.
- 1:18:40Speaker 1: Yeah, and this is a great choice. This was one
- 1:18:42Speaker 1: of the ones that I considered when we were researching cards.
- 1:18:45Speaker 1: So I'm glad that you picked it, and it's it
- 1:18:48Speaker 1: is funny the way that we can be on the
- 1:18:49Speaker 1: same wavelength here even though like we're independently researching that
- 1:18:54Speaker 1: love this card pick for all the reasons that you
- 1:18:56Speaker 1: just hit. All right, Well, that's going to wrap us
- 1:18:58Speaker 1: up for this week. Like I said, if you want
