Transcript
- 0:06Speaker 1: Hello everybody, and welcome to another edition of Cardinal Territory
- 0:10Speaker 1: Jim Hayes along with Kyle Gibson and Lance Lynn and gentlemen.
- 0:16Speaker 1: Let's start with something that seems to be a tradition
- 0:19Speaker 1: amongst baseball fans. The All Star team rosters are set,
- 0:24Speaker 1: and now there's a couple of days before some players
- 0:28Speaker 1: bag out of it with injuries or not wanting to
- 0:32Speaker 1: not wanting to mess anything up, so we don't know
- 0:35Speaker 1: exactly who's going totally.
- 0:38Speaker 2: But this is the time.
- 0:40Speaker 3: You're not saying, not even close to being set, gotcha? Okay,
- 0:44Speaker 3: but but what vote and player votes are in and
- 0:48Speaker 3: the alternates of becomings of rosters are not set. Here
- 0:51Speaker 3: we go. There'll be fifteen new names before the actual games.
- 0:54Speaker 4: Gosh, I still.
- 0:55Speaker 5: Want to take this political right now of how long
- 0:57Speaker 5: this process is gonna drawn out, but I'm not going
- 0:59Speaker 5: to do it.
- 1:02Speaker 1: But can we at least complain about the snubs because
- 1:05Speaker 1: that seems to be fun to fans.
- 1:07Speaker 5: It's fun because when we say it, when we say it,
- 1:09Speaker 5: it's gonna get them into the game, right, So we'll
- 1:12Speaker 5: talk about how they got snubbed, and then over the.
- 1:14Speaker 4: Next six days they'll be in.
- 1:16Speaker 1: Yep, all right, So I'm gonna start with with Lance
- 1:21Speaker 1: give me your number one snob as it stands.
- 1:26Speaker 3: The number one. I mean, I gotta go with Sunny Gray.
- 1:28Speaker 3: I saw his numbers the other day. I was like,
- 1:30Speaker 3: man like, why, but he's gonna get in when a
- 1:34Speaker 3: starter pitches on Saturday or Sunday the day before. So
- 1:37Speaker 3: I'm not like, That's what people don't realize. Some of
- 1:39Speaker 3: these guys are named knowing that they're gonna get subbed out,
- 1:43Speaker 3: and they know that they can't get or can't pitch
- 1:46Speaker 3: it or won't pitch it for starters that are going
- 1:48Speaker 3: to be in the game. So it's a you know,
- 1:51Speaker 3: it's a weird little little thing that they've got going on.
- 1:54Speaker 3: So and or managers. Some managers get to choose some
- 1:58Speaker 3: guys too, so they choose some of their own guys
- 2:00Speaker 3: knowing that they're not gonna let him pitch in the game.
- 2:02Speaker 3: Then they can replace them later. So there's a lot
- 2:04Speaker 3: of a lot of moving parts and a lot of
- 2:06Speaker 3: political stuff going on in Kyle. Kyle knows that very well.
- 2:11Speaker 2: Kyle.
- 2:14Speaker 5: Right now, think for right now, my biggest nub is
- 2:17Speaker 5: Luis Garcia. Junior with the Nats. The guy's got like,
- 2:21Speaker 5: I don't know what his ops. I'm pretty sure it's
- 2:23Speaker 5: north of nine hundred. He's got a ton of RBIs,
- 2:26Speaker 5: he's got twenty homers. He's played really, really well.
- 2:29Speaker 4: So for a.
- 2:30Speaker 5: Position player, first base is a tough one, especially with
- 2:34Speaker 5: how the voting is. I mean I have to dive
- 2:37Speaker 5: into Olsen and Freeman and some of these guys' numbers
- 2:40Speaker 5: to really see. But he's playing a tough position of
- 2:43Speaker 5: first base. And when the fans vote the first round
- 2:47Speaker 5: and vote in the starters and take up those positions,
- 2:50Speaker 5: then you're inevitably gonna have some of these, you know,
- 2:54Speaker 5: players that are gonna end up getting in because he'll
- 2:56Speaker 5: get in, but they don't make it, you know, in
- 2:59Speaker 5: that first round or two.
- 3:00Speaker 1: I'm gonna I'm gonna throw some names. Uh you mentioned
- 3:03Speaker 1: Sonny Gray ten and one two point six to one
- 3:06Speaker 1: e r A and he might get in. Hopefully he
- 3:09Speaker 1: does with a team that's terrible. He's tough, lagmans Worth tough, right,
- 3:14Speaker 1: Jim uh Wilson Contreras to eighty four batting average, twenty
- 3:19Speaker 1: homers to Ryan two sixty eight. Numbers not as good
- 3:24Speaker 1: as JJ Weatherhol. I think those guys could be looked
- 3:28Speaker 1: at snubbers. How about Zach Wheeler. I know he only
- 3:30Speaker 1: has eighty innings two point three six e r A
- 3:33Speaker 1: eight and one e r A and a whip that's
- 3:36Speaker 1: like sub one uh and Miller one point seventy one
- 3:42Speaker 1: e r A with fifty two innings. There's a bunch
- 3:44Speaker 1: of guys who have a case who might well end
- 3:47Speaker 1: up in there. But let's talk about JJ Weatherhol Like
- 3:50Speaker 1: we see him all the time because we watched the Cardinals.
- 3:53Speaker 2: But Kyle, is that a guy who you think should
- 3:55Speaker 2: be in there?
- 3:57Speaker 5: Yeah, I mean I'd really have to dive into some
- 3:59Speaker 5: of the second basement numbers, but I mean, I think
- 4:01Speaker 5: everybody around the league that's watched kind of feels like
- 4:03Speaker 5: he's one of the better second basemen and he plays
- 4:06Speaker 5: great defense. In second base historically is not a position
- 4:10Speaker 5: that you get a lot of offense out of. I
- 4:12Speaker 5: mean I say that like no history, but I mean.
- 4:15Speaker 4: You just not.
- 4:16Speaker 5: You don't normally get the thump, you don't normally get
- 4:18Speaker 5: the slug. You know, it's just kind of rare to
- 4:20Speaker 5: have that dual package at their second base. So yeah,
- 4:23Speaker 5: I mean I think he should probably get in, but
- 4:27Speaker 5: we'll see.
- 4:29Speaker 2: You also.
- 4:30Speaker 1: But those are two guys with solid numbers. But for
- 4:34Speaker 1: JJ's twenty three years old, maybe they look at him.
- 4:37Speaker 1: He'll be an All Star again. I'm pretty sure he will.
- 4:40Speaker 4: Yeah, but that's not right.
- 4:43Speaker 5: I think it's you know, some of this, some of
- 4:45Speaker 5: this is created a little bit by MLB last year
- 4:48Speaker 5: when they put you know, you talked about Zach Wheeler.
- 4:50Speaker 5: You know, Miserowski was in the All Star Game with
- 4:53Speaker 5: how many starts, you know, I mean, obviously he's a
- 4:56Speaker 5: really good pitcher, five big lead it starts, and he
- 4:59Speaker 5: was in the All Star Games. So realistically, innings and
- 5:02Speaker 5: qualifying for anything shouldn't matter anymore, Right, Zach Wheelers should
- 5:05Speaker 5: be in there because he's got you know, you just
- 5:07Speaker 5: throw out qualifiers and you just list everybody by E
- 5:10Speaker 5: RA and wins. You know, I think Zach is obviously
- 5:14Speaker 5: a stud and he should be in. But you know,
- 5:17Speaker 5: you create this for yourself as MLB when you make
- 5:21Speaker 5: decisions like that.
- 5:24Speaker 1: Lance Sometimes if there's a young player who's in the
- 5:27Speaker 1: headlines pretty much daily, MLB wants to see them in
- 5:32Speaker 1: the All Star Game, maybe so that the ratings get
- 5:36Speaker 1: a little a little boost.
- 5:38Speaker 3: Is that possible, Yeah, it depends if you're if you
- 5:41Speaker 3: throw one hundred miles an hour, you're in a big market,
- 5:44Speaker 3: So it depends on how big your name is. So
- 5:46Speaker 3: like JJ's screwed because he's in a mid market, to
- 5:49Speaker 3: be honest with you, and they're in Philly, So they
- 5:52Speaker 3: would rather have a bigger market team or a kid
- 5:56Speaker 3: that plays in a bigger market. You know, the kid
- 5:59Speaker 3: last year got added in Milwaukee, hughes those one hundred
- 6:02Speaker 3: and five miles an hour and was striking out everyone
- 6:05Speaker 3: at the time. So it's an easy one for them
- 6:07Speaker 3: to do. You know, the same thing that we dealt
- 6:09Speaker 3: within twenty one Kyle when they said, hey, show he's
- 6:12Speaker 3: going to start the All Star Game when he wasn't
- 6:13Speaker 3: the best starter in the American League at the time.
- 6:17Speaker 3: So you know, it just comes and goes with whatever
- 6:20Speaker 3: suits mob and what they want to do and make
- 6:22Speaker 3: it look you know, and it is an all star game,
- 6:25Speaker 3: so fans want different things. So sometimes the best player
- 6:28Speaker 3: doesn't get in. It's the you know, the one that
- 6:30Speaker 3: gets you the most headlines.
- 6:33Speaker 1: So you, Kyle were an All Star one time, Lance
- 6:37Speaker 1: was a two time All Star. Can you guys share
- 6:40Speaker 1: some All Star stories. Give us a peek behind the
- 6:43Speaker 1: curtain for what it's like when you're an All Star.
- 6:46Speaker 1: How about you, Kyle, because I know Lance had the stories.
- 6:50Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean, I think the It was just really cool.
- 6:53Speaker 4: For me.
- 6:54Speaker 5: Being an All Star was never a goal of lining
- 6:56Speaker 5: in my career. You know, it wasn't something that you know,
- 6:59Speaker 5: there were a couple of times where I thought it
- 7:01Speaker 5: might have been possible, but I was kind of right
- 7:02Speaker 5: on the fringe and just you know, didn't end.
- 7:04Speaker 4: Up making it.
- 7:05Speaker 5: But for me, it was a pretty deep into my career.
- 7:08Speaker 5: At twenty twenty one, I was in Texas, you know,
- 7:11Speaker 5: had a really good first half and really, for the
- 7:15Speaker 5: first time, I felt like I showed up to a
- 7:17Speaker 5: locker room and it was really cool to be a
- 7:20Speaker 5: part of that kind of a group and to be
- 7:21Speaker 5: associated with that kind of a group. Pretty humbling experience
- 7:25Speaker 5: to have some of the biggest names in the sport
- 7:27Speaker 5: come up and congratulate you on first half and congratulate
- 7:30Speaker 5: you on on your All Star selection when you know,
- 7:32Speaker 5: Aaron Judge had however many at the time, Garrett Cale
- 7:35Speaker 5: had however many at the time. You know, it was
- 7:38Speaker 5: pretty special to do it, you know with Lance as well,
- 7:41Speaker 5: you know, just with our history there being teammates and
- 7:44Speaker 5: and you know playing together already, so that was a
- 7:47Speaker 5: cool part of it. There's a lot of autographs. I
- 7:50Speaker 5: think that's the thing that I didn't realize going into it. Uh,
- 7:54Speaker 5: there's probably forty dozen baseballs at least, maybe more. You know,
- 8:00Speaker 5: however many hats and jerseys and and everything from the
- 8:03Speaker 5: game that you know they give away and they you know,
- 8:06Speaker 5: auction off and stuff. That was probably the most unexpected
- 8:09Speaker 5: thing going in was you know, you've got really a
- 8:13Speaker 5: day and a half. I guess maybe it's two full
- 8:16Speaker 5: days to kind of get through quite a few autographs
- 8:20Speaker 5: on top of doing media actually getting ready for the game,
- 8:24Speaker 5: you know, if you wanted to work out to stay
- 8:26Speaker 5: ready for the second half. You know, there was a
- 8:28Speaker 5: lot of things to do there on top of you know,
- 8:30Speaker 5: signing five or six hundred autographs, maybe even more.
- 8:33Speaker 1: And they also give you free swag, right, you got
- 8:37Speaker 1: T shirts because you guys are both wearing T shirt.
- 8:41Speaker 5: I mean, I don't Yeah, we didn't plan this, I swear,
- 8:46Speaker 5: but I was going I was going through old bags yesterday.
- 8:50Speaker 3: To you, I was like, man, that looks like a
- 8:51Speaker 3: good T shirt. I'll just throw that in the thing
- 8:53Speaker 3: and in board today. So yeah, that's where I go.
- 8:56Speaker 3: They either they just get they just get pulled out
- 8:58Speaker 3: of bags years later. So that's the beauty of it.
- 9:01Speaker 1: Give me Lance, give me some All Star stories that
- 9:04Speaker 1: are fun, maybe with a couple of cusswards thrown in there.
- 9:08Speaker 3: Uh no, So my first one, you know, it was
- 9:11Speaker 3: my first full season. So when you you know, when
- 9:13Speaker 3: you're able to do that. Riley Gate, I was you know,
- 9:17Speaker 3: voted in by my peers as a pretty much a
- 9:19Speaker 3: rookie in twenty twelve, so that was that was pretty cool.
- 9:24Speaker 3: You know. I think it was Chipper Jones's last year
- 9:27Speaker 3: that he played, so he was there obviously, gave a
- 9:31Speaker 3: speech to the clubhouse, all that good stuff. So got
- 9:33Speaker 3: to play, you know, on a team with Chipper Jones
- 9:36Speaker 3: and that's someone I watched growing up and stuff like that.
- 9:39Speaker 3: So when you're young and make an All Star team
- 9:42Speaker 3: and the older guys are say on their way out,
- 9:45Speaker 3: you know, Jeter I think played another year or two
- 9:48Speaker 3: after that and stuff like that, but you knew that
- 9:50Speaker 3: they were kind of coming towards the back end of
- 9:52Speaker 3: their career and you're on an All Star teams are
- 9:54Speaker 3: playing against him on All Star fields is pretty cool.
- 9:59Speaker 3: So yeah, and then twenty one was cool just because
- 10:02Speaker 3: there was quite a long time in between appearances. And then,
- 10:06Speaker 3: you know, I got some stories of why I was
- 10:08Speaker 3: quite a long time in between appearances. I had a
- 10:10Speaker 3: couple of good first halfs in there, you know, in
- 10:12Speaker 3: between those ten years. But the year after, covid to
- 10:16Speaker 3: do the All Star Game and have it, and it
- 10:19Speaker 3: was kind of a you know, a breath of fresh
- 10:21Speaker 3: air for everyone at that time of life. So my
- 10:25Speaker 3: coyle said, there's a lot that goes into them, a
- 10:27Speaker 3: lot of travel plans, a lot of this and that.
- 10:29Speaker 3: My first one was in Kansas City, so I got
- 10:32Speaker 3: to drive over. I didn't have too much expenses, you know,
- 10:36Speaker 3: expenses for families to get places and stuff like that.
- 10:40Speaker 3: The one in twenty one was definitely way more expensive,
- 10:42Speaker 3: but I had a you know, a little bigger pockets
- 10:45Speaker 3: to get there and get everybody there. And you know,
- 10:48Speaker 3: it was a d Kyle, you say you on that one.
- 10:51Speaker 3: I think we played the game for free just to
- 10:53Speaker 3: make sure all our family and everybody gets there, and
- 10:58Speaker 3: just tickets and hotels and this and that. So you know,
- 11:01Speaker 3: I remember being stressed as a young kid because it
- 11:03Speaker 3: costs so much for everything, and then as an older guy,
- 11:06Speaker 3: I was like, screw it, just get it. Let's go.
- 11:09Speaker 3: You know, everybody have fun. So there's a lot of
- 11:12Speaker 3: a lot of ins and outs that comes with all
- 11:14Speaker 3: star travel and stuff like that. It is definitely stressful,
- 11:17Speaker 3: but it's a fun time.
- 11:19Speaker 1: Did you walk away, either one of you with like
- 11:21Speaker 1: an autograph jersey that's hagging in your uh land cave
- 11:26Speaker 1: or anything. I'd like to know what you took away
- 11:28Speaker 1: from that outside of empty pockets or a thing wat right.
- 11:33Speaker 3: Yeah, Baseball's jerseys. You know, whatever you want to sign,
- 11:36Speaker 3: you put on a table and everyone goes through it,
- 11:38Speaker 3: and you're that's what you're doing for literally up until
- 11:41Speaker 3: a game time or when you're done with the game.
- 11:42Speaker 3: You're finishing up and you know exactly where you're at.
- 11:46Speaker 3: And then you have like your own uh like we
- 11:50Speaker 3: had one of our club bouse guys or something like
- 11:53Speaker 3: that would be with us, and think each team would
- 11:56Speaker 3: have a guy that's like, hey, what do you want
- 11:57Speaker 3: to get signed by everybody? That's like truly personal. And
- 12:00Speaker 3: then you have them. They just go around to each
- 12:02Speaker 3: guy and make sure they get everybody checklists off, so
- 12:04Speaker 3: that I would say, I sent my jersey around just
- 12:07Speaker 3: because that's one that you're gonna have forever jersey. And
- 12:10Speaker 3: then so both jerseys are hung up sign you know,
- 12:13Speaker 3: make sure everybody was on it, and then baseballs and
- 12:16Speaker 3: stuff like that just kind of comes as they go.
- 12:19Speaker 2: Pretty good. How about you cale, what's hanging your man cave?
- 12:24Speaker 4: Yeah?
- 12:24Speaker 3: I did.
- 12:24Speaker 5: We've got a little a couple of shelves at the
- 12:26Speaker 5: bottom of our stairs here that have just some memorabilia
- 12:29Speaker 5: for my career, and one is a hat from that
- 12:32Speaker 5: game I had everybody signed the All Star Game hat,
- 12:35Speaker 5: and then the other thing is sitting there. Jose Travino,
- 12:38Speaker 5: the catcher for Texas that year, he surprised me. He
- 12:42Speaker 5: had a guy who does custom cleats and I had
- 12:44Speaker 5: given him a pair of cleats to see if he
- 12:46Speaker 5: would do me a road pair of cleats, and he's like, yeah, absolutely,
- 12:51Speaker 5: I got you taken care of. And the week before
- 12:53Speaker 5: the All Star Game, he showed me the cleats and
- 12:55Speaker 5: he had the guy do a custom set for the
- 12:57Speaker 5: All Star Game instead. So that was pretty special for
- 13:02Speaker 5: him to kind of think ahead and take a chance
- 13:04Speaker 5: really and to do that. But you know, that's probably
- 13:08Speaker 5: the coolest thing I can walk away from the game.
- 13:10Speaker 5: Was was that set of cleats? You know, you know,
- 13:13Speaker 5: the jerseys and the hat is awesome, But that's probably
- 13:17Speaker 5: the coolest, coolest piece of memorabily I have.
- 13:19Speaker 1: I would say I like it all Star Game memories.
- 13:22Speaker 1: We're going to take a break here. You're watching Cardinal
- 13:25Speaker 1: Territory on the Foul Territory Network.
- 13:29Speaker 6: Hey for the families out there looking for a different
- 13:31Speaker 6: path to help your child succeed at home, looking to

- 13:37Speaker 6: thing in the past.
- 13:38Speaker 2: I know you liked it.
- 13:40Speaker 7: Yeah, I did. I liked it a lot. All my
- 13:41Speaker 7: kids have done it before. It's an opportunity for them
- 13:45Speaker 7: to stay at home and enjoy school just as much.
- 13:48Speaker 7: They learn a lot. And this is an opportunity for
- 13:51Speaker 7: families that are on the go too as well. They
- 13:53Speaker 7: have to understand, Listen, can't be at a regular school
- 13:56Speaker 7: at all times. I need my child to be doing this,
- 13:59Speaker 7: whether it's not a career, whatever stature they are at.
- 14:02Speaker 7: And we loved every second of it. And I think
- 14:05Speaker 7: it is an easy opportunity for some children.
- 14:07Speaker 6: K twelve offers tuition free, accredited online public education for
- 14:11Speaker 6: students in K through twelve, all in a setting that

- 14:23Speaker 6: the number twelve dot com slash foul. K twelve dot
- 14:27Speaker 6: com slash foul.
- 14:29Speaker 2: Okay.
- 14:29Speaker 1: As lance Lynn has pointed out, Jordan Walker slump was
- 14:35Speaker 1: hitting two ninety okay, So all the talk about Jordy
- 14:38Speaker 1: Walker slipping a little, I understand people's his average slipped
- 14:42Speaker 1: a little, and he was getting a lot of base
- 14:44Speaker 1: hits on the ground through the hole because he hits
- 14:47Speaker 1: the ball. So are now he's back to blasting baseballs.
- 14:50Speaker 1: And you look at his numbers, two ninety two batting
- 14:53Speaker 1: average as of today, twenty homers.
- 14:56Speaker 2: Now he's an all star, Kyle.
- 14:59Speaker 1: Just your impressions of a young man who you guys
- 15:03Speaker 1: saw struggling fighting, some guys wrote him off to not
- 15:07Speaker 1: only come back, to come back in this way, pretty impressive.
- 15:12Speaker 4: Yeah, I thought.
- 15:12Speaker 5: The Cardinals post on social media about Alli giving him
- 15:15Speaker 5: the All Star News and his speech was pretty special
- 15:19Speaker 5: as well. You can tell it's a it's a guy
- 15:21Speaker 5: that appreciates his journey to get where he is, and
- 15:26Speaker 5: that's not always easily said. You know, I think it's
- 15:30Speaker 5: it's really easy to hear the cliche and say, oh,
- 15:33Speaker 5: you know what, it's all about the journey. I'm so
- 15:35Speaker 5: glad that you know, I had to go through what
- 15:37Speaker 5: I went through. Uh, maybe Jordan just said that, but
- 15:40Speaker 5: I feel like you can learn so much about your
- 15:42Speaker 5: stuff when you struggle. You can learn so much about
- 15:44Speaker 5: yourself when you go through the hardest of times, and
- 15:47Speaker 5: then just like the old cliche is that kind of
- 15:49Speaker 5: makes you appreciate the really good times even that much more. So,
- 15:53Speaker 5: you know, I think it's uh, it's pretty cool to
- 15:56Speaker 5: see how much he he has grown and probably on
- 16:00Speaker 5: the mental side, how much better he is because of
- 16:03Speaker 5: what he's gone through. You know, a slump for him
- 16:06Speaker 5: obviously is looking a little bit different right now. But
- 16:09Speaker 5: congratulations to Jordan Walker. You know, we've been talking about
- 16:11Speaker 5: him a lot on this podcast and obviously they have
- 16:13Speaker 5: around the country too, and so well deserved with the
- 16:17Speaker 5: work that he's put in from what it sounds like.
- 16:19Speaker 5: And I'm just really happy that it's paid off for him,
- 16:21Speaker 5: because not all the times is a payoff and turn
- 16:23Speaker 5: into this kind of success.
- 16:25Speaker 1: Agree, and last, you look at a guy and they
- 16:28Speaker 1: could talk about fixing his swing and you know, opening
- 16:31Speaker 1: him up a little, moving his hands whatever. That is
- 16:34Speaker 1: a mental challenge that Jordan Walker answered the call talk
- 16:39Speaker 1: about the mentality of being able to go through what
- 16:42Speaker 1: he went through and bounce back in the way he has.
- 16:46Speaker 3: So I'm gonna put something in perspective here. Jordan Walker's
- 16:49Speaker 3: twenty four years old. My rookie season, I was twenty
- 16:52Speaker 3: four and didn't make an All Star team toil I
- 16:54Speaker 3: was twenty five. So people need to realize this kid's
- 16:57Speaker 3: three and a half three three and a half years
- 16:59Speaker 3: into the big leagues and they're like, oh man, we're
- 17:02Speaker 3: worried he wasn't going to figure it out. Here's the issue.
- 17:04Speaker 3: They rushed him up. He had some success because he's talented,
- 17:08Speaker 3: The league figured him out and he wasn't quite ready mentally,
- 17:12Speaker 3: so they had he had to go back re establish
- 17:14Speaker 3: his mentality of how he's going to go about his business,
- 17:18Speaker 3: be a professional and deal with the failures are going
- 17:19Speaker 3: to happen, and then he evolved into what he is
- 17:22Speaker 3: today and you're saying, oh, man, good thing he figured
- 17:25Speaker 3: it out. It was going to be too late. He's
- 17:27Speaker 3: twenty four years old. Like, you know, I got the
- 17:30Speaker 3: big leagues at twenty four and played till I was
- 17:32Speaker 3: thirty eight. So it's like, hey, this guy's on pace
- 17:35Speaker 3: for a twenty year major league career and where we're
- 17:37Speaker 3: worried about him, you know, if everything goes well health
- 17:40Speaker 3: wise and all that. So, yes, there's mental challenges in
- 17:43Speaker 3: this game. He didn't go to college, he had COVID years.
- 17:47Speaker 3: He you know, he got rushed to the big leagues.
- 17:50Speaker 3: There was a lot of transition in the minor leagues
- 17:52Speaker 3: at the time that he was coming up through blah
- 17:54Speaker 3: blah blah. He's dealt with all of it. Had failures
- 17:57Speaker 3: at the big league level, which you're going to have,
- 18:00Speaker 3: but he had failures at the big league level when
- 18:02Speaker 3: they were trying to compete. And you put a guy
- 18:04Speaker 3: in a situation where you're like, hey, we need you
- 18:06Speaker 3: to be the middle order bat when you really didn't
- 18:09Speaker 3: have any of the development that you needed in the
- 18:10Speaker 3: minor leagues to be a middle of the bat, but
- 18:13Speaker 3: the last couple of years when they weren't competing, he's
- 18:15Speaker 3: able to go down the minor leagues and develop. Now
- 18:17Speaker 3: he's the middle order of the bat. So that just
- 18:19Speaker 3: shows everybody just because you're super talented doesn't mean it
- 18:22Speaker 3: happens right away. And we need to realize he's still
- 18:25Speaker 3: only twenty four years old, and he's got a lot
- 18:27Speaker 3: of time to mature and a lot of games to
- 18:29Speaker 3: be played to have mental fortitude to even be better
- 18:34Speaker 3: than what he is now. So I played with him, Kyle,
- 18:36Speaker 3: and I played with him. I was at times worried
- 18:39Speaker 3: about him, and then I would be reminded that when
- 18:41Speaker 3: we were playing with him, he was twenty two years old,
- 18:43Speaker 3: and I was like, good lord, man, he's got a
- 18:46Speaker 3: ways to go. We were like, man, he's got a
- 18:48Speaker 3: ways to go, but he's only twenty two, so it's
- 18:51Speaker 3: going to come. It's just going to come at his
- 18:53Speaker 3: own pace. And he was able to figure out who
- 18:55Speaker 3: he was, what he was about, what he was trying
- 18:57Speaker 3: to do day in and day out, and then they
- 18:58Speaker 3: finally talked to him and his language instead of trying
- 19:01Speaker 3: to say, hey, you need to do this. It's like Hey,
- 19:03Speaker 3: how can we help you be you? And that's what
- 19:06Speaker 3: they've done this year and now you know so I finally,
- 19:08Speaker 3: you know, you tip your cap to the coaching staff
- 19:10Speaker 3: to hey, how can we make you the best player
- 19:13Speaker 3: and make you feel the most comfortable you can be
- 19:15Speaker 3: to be what you're supposed to be. And they've been
- 19:17Speaker 3: able to do that, and I think you're slowly adding
- 19:19Speaker 3: onto it. And now that he knows who he is,
- 19:21Speaker 3: he has a base and now he can go from there.
- 19:23Speaker 3: Originally he didn't have any bass because everything was being
- 19:26Speaker 3: changed at all times. Everything that he knew was being changed.
- 19:28Speaker 3: Now he knows who he is. Now he can keep building.
- 19:30Speaker 3: So I'm looking forward to what he can do in
- 19:32Speaker 3: the future and what he can become.
- 19:34Speaker 1: Well said, now you guys are both pitchers and brings
- 19:38Speaker 1: us to Jordan Walker. Yes or no for home run derby.
- 19:42Speaker 1: He said he'd consider it. Don't know how that's going
- 19:44Speaker 1: to shake out now, but from my perspective as a fan,
- 19:49Speaker 1: please don't do it, because I've heard stories from guys
- 19:53Speaker 1: who are in home run derbys that pulled somewhat shoulder
- 19:57Speaker 1: whatever got their swing out of whack. I don't know
- 19:59Speaker 1: what the canis of that or Kyle. But and granted,
- 20:03Speaker 1: Jordan Walker is a tough guy mentally now he's earned
- 20:06Speaker 1: his stripes. If he wants to go, I'll root for him,
- 20:10Speaker 1: But I'm hoping deep down he doesn't go.
- 20:12Speaker 2: Am I wrong?
- 20:15Speaker 4: Absolutely? You just never know.
- 20:17Speaker 5: You never know when these opportunities are going to come
- 20:20Speaker 5: up again. I mean it's just like, I don't know.
- 20:22Speaker 5: This was one thing that never I couldn't really wrap
- 20:26Speaker 5: my head around in twenty twenty one. And not judging
- 20:29Speaker 5: anybody that didn't pitch right because they all had their reasons.
- 20:34Speaker 5: I couldn't understand why you wouldn't want to play in
- 20:37Speaker 5: this game. I and same would go with the home
- 20:40Speaker 5: run derby. I mean, if you have the chance to
- 20:42Speaker 5: do it, unless you've already done it four or five
- 20:44Speaker 5: times and you want to give somebody else a chance, okay,
- 20:47Speaker 5: but if this is your first chance to do it,
- 20:50Speaker 5: and I just don't see how you turn it down.
- 20:54Speaker 5: I mean, I don't know if we're going to get
- 20:55Speaker 5: to trade deadline talk today, but we're gonna probably talk
- 20:59Speaker 5: about how you guys think they should just tear it
- 21:01Speaker 5: down and sell. And we're worried about Jordan Walker you know,
- 21:04Speaker 5: is swinging and messing up his swinging the home run.
- 21:07Speaker 5: Everyone Apparently to you guys, it's not even gonna matter.
- 21:09Speaker 5: So they're just gonna tear down and sell everybody. So
- 21:11Speaker 5: just go have your fun, Jordan, you know, like, but
- 21:14Speaker 5: no all joking aside. I think you just never know
- 21:17Speaker 5: when you're gonna get this chance again. And it's that
- 21:20Speaker 5: is one thing that probably a little bit on the
- 21:22Speaker 5: selfish side of the All Star Game is you do
- 21:24Speaker 5: what you can to enjoy it because it is a
- 21:26Speaker 5: personal achievement and you you surround yourself with the family
- 21:30Speaker 5: like Lance talked about, so you can enjoy it with
- 21:32Speaker 5: other people. But man, if you get a chance to
- 21:34Speaker 5: do it, you gotta go do it for you and
- 21:37Speaker 5: go have some fun.
- 21:39Speaker 2: So Lance, do you agree with that? Am I wrong? Again?
- 21:42Speaker 3: Here's here's what I have to say. If as a
- 21:45Speaker 3: child and as a kid, when he was watching this
- 21:47Speaker 3: game and he saw the home run derby on the
- 21:49Speaker 3: screen and said, man, that would be awesome and that's
- 21:52Speaker 3: something I wish I could do, or a goal, and
- 21:54Speaker 3: then it's a no doubt, or if it's something that
- 21:56Speaker 3: he has no desire to do, then it's it. And
- 22:00Speaker 3: it's a different story. He shouldn't feel pressured to do
- 22:02Speaker 3: it just because they say he should do it. Now,
- 22:05Speaker 3: I'm going to tell you, most likely, if he watched
- 22:07Speaker 3: an All Star game ever in his life and saw
- 22:09Speaker 3: them him hitting home runs in the home run derby,
- 22:11Speaker 3: it was like, man, that looks awesome, then he should
- 22:14Speaker 3: one hundred percent do it, because unfortunately, in my first
- 22:18Speaker 3: All Star game, I didn't pitch. I wanted to pitch.
- 22:21Speaker 3: I was informed after the All Star Game that I
- 22:24Speaker 3: was that the Cardinals didn't want me to pitch without
- 22:28Speaker 3: telling me, so they told them that I was unavailable
- 22:30Speaker 3: without me even knowing. So that was one of my
- 22:33Speaker 3: one of my biggest things up until twenty one. I
- 22:36Speaker 3: never I've been an All Star, but I never pitched
- 22:38Speaker 3: an All Star game, so it doesn't count. And my
- 22:40Speaker 3: I didn't count in my opinion, so I didn't play
- 22:42Speaker 3: in the game, so technically was I Just because I
- 22:45Speaker 3: was on the roster doesn't mean you know, I was
- 22:47Speaker 3: an All Star. So that's the way I felt. So
- 22:52Speaker 3: to get back to the point, if he ever had
- 22:54Speaker 3: dreams of hitting the home run derby or a home
- 22:56Speaker 3: you know, being in a home run derby, then it's
- 22:58Speaker 3: you have to do it, especially at the age of
- 23:00Speaker 3: twenty four, because if you go ten years in between
- 23:03Speaker 3: All Stars games and you're thirty four, you might be
- 23:05Speaker 3: you might be a little old and tired by the
- 23:07Speaker 3: time you do it again. So that would be my suggestion,
- 23:10Speaker 3: do it now while you're young.
- 23:12Speaker 4: And I think the fans want to see that.
- 23:13Speaker 5: I think the fans want to see the guys that
- 23:15Speaker 5: have been hitting homers too, right, Like, That's the other
- 23:17Speaker 5: thing that's pretty cool, is I mean, if you just
- 23:20Speaker 5: went off the top ten or twelve or how many
- 23:22Speaker 5: guys you want to have, you know, eight top home
- 23:25Speaker 5: run guys, I think people would be okay with that.
- 23:27Speaker 5: You know, I think the fans that are there want
- 23:29Speaker 5: to see the people that have hit the ball the
- 23:30Speaker 5: hardest in the most home runs.
- 23:32Speaker 4: Let's watch them see how far they can hit the ball.
- 23:34Speaker 5: So I said it was mostly selfish, but I think
- 23:36Speaker 5: it also the fans kind of deserve to see, you know,
- 23:39Speaker 5: those best home run hitters take their crack and see
- 23:41Speaker 5: who can hit the most. And at Citizens Bank, you're
- 23:44Speaker 5: going to see some balls go really far and high
- 23:46Speaker 5: up into the into the rafters.
- 23:48Speaker 7: Uh.
- 23:49Speaker 4: And it's going to be pretty cool.
- 23:51Speaker 3: Is it based on swings this year?
- 23:54Speaker 4: Yeah, they're doing it different.
- 23:55Speaker 5: They're doing it different through the way, certain number of swings,
- 23:58Speaker 5: no time limits. So Peter Lons mentioned this the other day.
- 24:01Speaker 5: You're gonna actually get a chance to see the ball hit,
- 24:04Speaker 5: watch the ball. The fans enjoy it, and it's not
- 24:06Speaker 5: you know, rushing into the next swing. So I think
- 24:08Speaker 5: coverage fans are gonna enjoy better. Hopefully less people on
- 24:12Speaker 5: the stands get hit by baseballs because they're not watching
- 24:14Speaker 5: the last one yep.
- 24:16Speaker 3: And you risk the risk of being injured to less
- 24:19Speaker 3: because you're not rushing correct and trying to as many
- 24:21Speaker 3: balls as fast as you can. So I would say
- 24:23Speaker 3: everything pushes to do it because of the way that
- 24:27Speaker 3: they've done it now. And your last round of BP
- 24:29Speaker 3: every single day is let's see if I can hit
- 24:31Speaker 3: five homers and five swings. So people are stupid to
- 24:34Speaker 3: think that they don't try to hit home runs and
- 24:36Speaker 3: batting practice every day, and that's part of what they do.
- 24:39Speaker 5: They asked Bryce Harper the other day why he went
- 24:41Speaker 5: out to take early VP and what he was working on.
- 24:43Speaker 5: He goes, I was just trying to hit homers. I
- 24:46Speaker 5: mean like every now and then, you just want to
- 24:47Speaker 5: see the ball go over the fence. So didn't make
- 24:50Speaker 5: you feel good, Jim.
- 24:52Speaker 4: I think we just figured out. Yes, you were absolutely.
- 24:54Speaker 1: Wrong, okay, and it's happened before. But that does bring
- 24:57Speaker 1: us to our daily Dingers been brought to you by
- 25:01Speaker 1: Fan Duel. Yeah, I'm gonna go the the Brewers have
- 25:08Speaker 1: a lefty going, I guess so.
- 25:12Speaker 2: Yeah, I always do because and he's hot again.
- 25:14Speaker 1: In terms of the long ball, who you gotkle.
- 25:20Speaker 2: Who you got?
- 25:20Speaker 4: Just pick a go?
- 25:22Speaker 5: I mean normally you tell us who's gonna go, Jim,
- 25:24Speaker 5: you just throw you know, the alley up that for
- 25:26Speaker 5: both of us to try dunk it at the same time. Yeah,
- 25:33Speaker 5: gotta lefty up. I'm gonna go. I'm gonna try to
- 25:36Speaker 5: go unconventional here. I we don't even know the lineup.
- 25:42Speaker 4: I don't know. I'll go with Blaize Jordan dirty dog.
- 25:47Speaker 3: Okay, I was gonna go there, but the next obvious
- 25:50Speaker 3: is Herrera, So so I.
- 25:54Speaker 4: Go lefty lefty.
- 25:55Speaker 3: I think left eleft.
- 25:56Speaker 5: We got some lefties that do a good job of
- 25:58Speaker 5: staying on the ball. I don't think burleson New bar
- 26:00Speaker 5: or Weather. It would have been a backpick, so no.
- 26:04Speaker 1: The point is you can swing for the fences with FanDuel.
- 26:08Speaker 1: Just go to FanDuel dot com slash podcast to get started. FanDuel,

- 26:30Speaker 8: dot com. Gambling problem caller tax one eight hundred gambler.
- 26:34Speaker 2: I know you guys have different thoughts.
- 26:38Speaker 1: I just want to go on the record as saying
- 26:40Speaker 1: I don't want them to trade everyone. I've always been
- 26:43Speaker 1: a proponent of if there's a window of opportunity, you
- 26:48Speaker 1: try to climb through it, and if you have this
- 26:51Speaker 1: long term plan as him does, and I agree with it,
- 26:54Speaker 1: there's a way, as he says, to be creative and
- 26:57Speaker 1: do things that can help now but also don't matter
- 27:00Speaker 1: with the future planning. But my question is just so
- 27:04Speaker 1: maybe we get clicks. I don't want to see this
- 27:06Speaker 1: guy trade it. But if you talk about guys who
- 27:09Speaker 1: you think are going to be traded again, I'm not
- 27:11Speaker 1: an advocate of trading him, but Lars Newpar. Let me
- 27:15Speaker 1: just say this, Lars Newpar had heal surgery on both
- 27:18Speaker 1: heels and is having a really good season as comeback.
- 27:22Speaker 1: He was out for a long time. I watched that
- 27:24Speaker 1: guy play and he looks quicker, more comfortable than before
- 27:28Speaker 1: the surgery. The thing is, he's twenty eight, and the
- 27:32Speaker 1: Cardinals have guys in the minor leagues like Biez who
- 27:35Speaker 1: they may want to make a path for. That's why
- 27:38Speaker 1: I'm saying I think Newpar is likely to go, not
- 27:41Speaker 1: that I'm calling for it. I'm just saying I think
- 27:44Speaker 1: that's the way it may shake out.
- 27:46Speaker 2: Lance.
- 27:47Speaker 3: What do you think would I be surprised if Lars went? No,
- 27:52Speaker 3: I would not, and he's not. He's one of what
- 27:55Speaker 3: I say, five people that I think are possibly going
- 27:59Speaker 3: to get traded, traded with it being May O'Brien, Romero,
- 28:06Speaker 3: Soriano and Stanic are the ones that I was talking about,
- 28:10Speaker 3: and then there's a reason for each of them may
- 28:13Speaker 3: probably gonna opt out. Stanic one year deal, O'Brien's thirty one,
- 28:20Speaker 3: and Soriano's out of options, and then who who else?
- 28:23Speaker 3: Would I say, the rest of the bullpen? Yeah, Romero,
- 28:28Speaker 3: Who's who? Will be a free agent next year. So
- 28:30Speaker 3: that's what I think is it's not so much. And
- 28:33Speaker 3: I don't think, to be honest with you, if you
- 28:35Speaker 3: can't see somewhere on free agency and or what you're
- 28:38Speaker 3: getting back. Lars is under control next year, so I
- 28:43Speaker 3: actually see Hints as less likely to get traded than
- 28:46Speaker 3: the people that are not under team control for next year.
- 28:49Speaker 3: That's why O'Brien's probably a maybe. But I think the
- 28:53Speaker 3: age might push him to do it and see if
- 28:57Speaker 3: they could get a younger arm with more years of control.
- 29:00Speaker 3: So those are my reasons for it. And I know
- 29:04Speaker 3: Kyle and I kind of say, hey, hold everything, and
- 29:07Speaker 3: then add, if you are going for a World Series push,
- 29:12Speaker 3: then yes. So if then you go for it and
- 29:16Speaker 3: you get what you want. But if you're saying, hey,
- 29:18Speaker 3: we do not think we can win the World Series
- 29:20Speaker 3: and we do not, you know, we're going to stick
- 29:23Speaker 3: to what we're doing. Those are the guys that are
- 29:26Speaker 3: tradeable assets where you're not giving away any of the core.
- 29:29Speaker 3: But I also think Lars is a core member and
- 29:32Speaker 3: I think large should be extended. That's my opinion on
- 29:34Speaker 3: that one. To be honest, like you, I don't think
- 29:36Speaker 3: Dark could go anywhere.
- 29:38Speaker 1: I liked that he's a different player this year, and
- 29:41Speaker 1: I'm happy for what do you say.
- 29:42Speaker 3: Did you do that? Should you do any of that?
- 29:45Speaker 3: I would say no. If you're ten games over five hundred,
- 29:47Speaker 3: you add they're and they're in that ballpark right now,
- 29:51Speaker 3: Let's see what they do closer to the deadline, see
- 29:53Speaker 3: where they're at. But if they if you are.
- 29:57Speaker 1: There's something that Kyle has said too like I think
- 29:59Speaker 1: it was Kyle, but I agree with it. There's also
- 30:02Speaker 1: an element of rewarding your team and your fans. So
- 30:05Speaker 1: I think if you're creative, like him says, I think
- 30:09Speaker 1: you can do some of that and still put yourself
- 30:13Speaker 1: in a really good position to push for the postseason.
- 30:16Speaker 2: Kyle, what do you think?
- 30:18Speaker 4: I mean?
- 30:18Speaker 5: I think him, by all accounts, is a really smart
- 30:22Speaker 5: front office member, and I think he's the right guy
- 30:24Speaker 5: for what's going on right now, and I'm interested to
- 30:27Speaker 5: see what he does. To say the very least, I
- 30:31Speaker 5: think just listening to Lance, okay, like say, over the
- 30:34Speaker 5: next ten days, realistically, that's what we're going to decide
- 30:38Speaker 5: over the next ten or twelve days. The Cardinals don't
- 30:40Speaker 5: play well and they trade four or five bullpen members.
- 30:43Speaker 5: You better have four or five guys that you feel
- 30:45Speaker 5: I can actually pitch in the big leagues, or else
- 30:47Speaker 5: you're gonna rush five guys to cover innings in the bullpen,
- 30:51Speaker 5: and then you're just setting yourself there. You're setting yourself
- 30:54Speaker 5: up for not a great last two months.
- 30:58Speaker 4: I don't know. That's part of the reason why.
- 31:02Speaker 5: I just don't think that's a great idea. I mean,
- 31:05Speaker 5: I think if you trade a couple guys, a lot
- 31:08Speaker 5: of teams trade a couple guys, you know, maybe you
- 31:10Speaker 5: use a big league guy with a minor league guy
- 31:13Speaker 5: to get the piece that you want in the trade back.
- 31:16Speaker 4: I get that.
- 31:17Speaker 5: So I think over the next ten days it'll be
- 31:20Speaker 5: pretty telling here to see where the Cardinals are at.
- 31:22Speaker 5: They're one of nine teams that are over five hundred.
- 31:25Speaker 5: When playing against teams that are over five hundred, I
- 31:28Speaker 5: think that means something. You know, they play well against
- 31:31Speaker 5: good competition and against good teams, And yeah, I think
- 31:34Speaker 5: there's a certain aspect of this where your offense has
- 31:37Speaker 5: your young offense that you weren't sure about has really
- 31:42Speaker 5: played well and has put you in this position, and
- 31:44Speaker 5: a couple of the young starters or fringe starters that
- 31:47Speaker 5: you weren't sure about have put you in this position, right,
- 31:51Speaker 5: And I think there's a certain element of saying, not
- 31:54Speaker 5: like a thank you, but hey, we see what you've
- 31:56Speaker 5: done here. We see that you've put us in a
- 31:58Speaker 5: good spot. We're gonna shift our plan a little bit.
- 32:02Speaker 5: We're not gonna, you know, completely go off course, but
- 32:04Speaker 5: we are gonna give this young team a chance to
- 32:07Speaker 5: make the playoffs because they deserve it. And and yeah,
- 32:11Speaker 5: I think the fans deserve it.
- 32:14Speaker 4: I don't know.
- 32:14Speaker 5: I I think the scary part it here is here
- 32:17Speaker 5: that if you're the front office and you trade guys
- 32:19Speaker 5: away and you punt on this year and then next
- 32:22Speaker 5: year doesn't work, and now all of a sudden you're
- 32:23Speaker 5: looking at twenty eight or twenty nine to make the
- 32:25Speaker 5: playoffs again, that ain't good.
- 32:28Speaker 4: That ain't it.
- 32:30Speaker 2: Turn up? Hey, I think you guys bring up some
- 32:33Speaker 2: great points.
- 32:33Speaker 1: Keep in mind, the Cardinals had five coming up against
- 32:37Speaker 1: the Brewers here, so we'll kind of.
- 32:38Speaker 4: By the way.
- 32:39Speaker 5: They also just went four and two on a road
- 32:41Speaker 5: trip against the Cubs, and the Bruce just saying really.
- 32:43Speaker 3: Good, just saying before that road trip too, really good,
- 32:47Speaker 3: really good. Alright, Jordan ninety three home runs in June
- 32:52Speaker 3: season was over.
- 32:53Speaker 1: Geez, that's gonna do it for this edition the Cardinal Territory.
- 32:57Speaker 1: We'll see you next time. Hopefully that episode will suck
