- 0:04This is Living Waters of Grace, the teaching ministry of Lewis
- 0:08Harold, assistant pastor of Calvary Chapel of Westmoreland
- 0:12County in Greensburg, PA. Now here's Pastor Lewis as he
- 0:16continues teaching through God's Word.
- 0:37The world makes things controversial, but it's the word
- 0:40of God. It's the word of God.
- 0:43And before we even go there, I just want to go to second
- 0:46Timothy real quick. Chapter 3, Second Timothy
- 0:50chapter 3, we're going to just look at verse.
- 0:51Just going to read for verse 16. All Scripture, not some, not
- 0:59parts of it. All Scripture is given by
- 1:04inspiration of God and is profitable for doctrine and for
- 1:08reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness.
- 1:14We just talked about that. How much is all?
- 1:16Well, all means all. When God says that all of His
- 1:21word is good for us, He means what He says.
- 1:24All of it is good for us. And yes, that does include those
- 1:29long lists of genealogies with names that no one can pronounce.
- 1:34Today, Pastor Lewis shares with us that God's Word is good for
- 1:38even the most controversial of subjects.
- 1:41He points out that what the world calls controversial is
- 1:45actually clear as day in the Word of God.
- 1:48That is, if we accept it just as it is written now.
- 1:53Here's Pastor Lewis in the Book of First Timothy, chapter 2,
- 1:56with today's edition of Living Waters of Grace.
- 2:00Even Jesus himself said whoever believes shall not perish.
- 2:06Whoever believes or whoever will be saved with those who believe,
- 2:10all who call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.
- 2:13Everybody's not going to do that.
- 2:16Everybody's not going to do that.
- 2:19So when he says all men, you know, be saved, this is not
- 2:23saying that all men, as in all men without exception, will be
- 2:26saved. That's not what he's saying.
- 2:28He's saying that he, he desires that all men without distinction
- 2:33be saved. This is all men without
- 2:36distinction. That means he doesn't care if
- 2:38you're a Jew, if you're a Gentile, if you're a woman, if
- 2:42you're a man, if you're black or if you're white, if you're a
- 2:45Pagan, A Gentile Jew. He doesn't care about that.
- 2:48All men can be said. The gospel goes out to
- 2:51everybody. It goes out to everybody.
- 2:56So it's not a distinction by what a person is.
- 3:01Doesn't matter if it's man or woman, everyone, the gospel is
- 3:05there for them to be able to believe and receive.
- 3:08That's all men. And then he says and come to the
- 3:11knowledge of the truth after you get saved, then we need to be
- 3:15sanctified, right? We need to move on and grow in,
- 3:18in God. We need to grow in God
- 3:22sanctification. That means we, we're, we're
- 3:24working toward being set apart for God, for the use of God.
- 3:27It's our growth. It refers to the Christian
- 3:30growth after being saved to become a disciple of Jesus
- 3:34Christ and not to be LED astray by the false doctrines of false
- 3:38teachers, the doctrine of false teachers.
- 3:43We can't be LED astray by that if we are growing in Christ.
- 3:47Second Peter 318. It tells us to grow in the grace
- 3:50and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
- 3:55So why are we doing that? Why are we doing that and how
- 4:00and how and what is the means to be saved?
- 4:03Well, he says that in the next line.
- 4:05Look at verse 5 for this. For there is one God and one
- 4:09mediator between God and man, the man Christ Jesus.
- 4:13So what is the means for all men to be saved?
- 4:16Or what is the means for men to be saved?
- 4:18First of all, because of one God.
- 4:20We have one God. We don't have many gods.
- 4:23There's one God, one true God, one true and living God.
- 4:29A lot of people like to say God, and then he, they talk about all
- 4:32these things that God is not. If it's not the God of this, the
- 4:36God of the Bible, then he's not a true God.
- 4:39It's an idol. This is the one and true God,
- 4:44the living God. And he gave us his word so that
- 4:47we know who he is. He wants to be found of us when
- 4:53he says seek me and and you'll find me because he wants to be
- 4:57founded. But he's not hiding from us.
- 4:59He's not planning hide and go seek from us.
- 5:02He wants to be found of us. He wants us to know him so that
- 5:05we're not LED astray. So he says, so he says here,
- 5:11first of all, there is one God and one mediator.
- 5:14Now, there may be some people out there that might even agree
- 5:16with us and say, yeah, there's one God.
- 5:19But when you say there's only one way to God, when you say
- 5:24there's only one mediator between man and God, there's
- 5:27only one way that you can get to that God, that's when you have
- 5:31problems. People hate us for that.
- 5:35People call us names for that. People ridicule what?
- 5:38They slander us because of that. They call us intolerant because
- 5:44of that. Narrow minded.
- 5:46We're narrow minded by thinking it's only one way.
- 5:49How fair is that? It's true.
- 5:53There's one way, and that way is Jesus Christ the man.
- 5:59And he said the man because the reason why he said the matter is
- 6:02because he's truly God and he's truly man.
- 6:06He's fully God and he's fully man.
- 6:08But we but he's the mediator between God and man, the man
- 6:13Jesus Christ, because it was the you humanity of Jesus Christ
- 6:17that died for us on the cross. It was in his humanity that he
- 6:21died, and in his humanity he was yet without sin.
- 6:27That's why he was the accepted sacrifice.
- 6:32He was a man without sin, and he's the only mediator between
- 6:37God and man. There is no other.
- 6:40There is no other. I don't care what argument they
- 6:42try to make to try to make it seem like there's other ways to
- 6:46the Father, there is none. Jesus Christ himself said it was
- 6:49only one way, he said, and John 14, six, I am the way, the truth
- 6:53and the life. And John 10/7 he says I am the
- 6:56door. And then in Hebrews 9 and 15, he
- 7:00said the Bible says he's the only mediator of the new
- 7:03covenant, the only mediator of the new covenant, the man Jesus
- 7:10Christ. And how is it that this mediator
- 7:14works? What is the work of this
- 7:16mediator? Look at what he says here in
- 7:18verse. In verse 6 he says Who gave
- 7:22himself a ransom for all to be testified in due time he gave
- 7:28himself a ransom of all. That word is actually in the
- 7:32Greek called anti lutron, anti lutron.
- 7:36The word anti actually refers to the substitutionary.
- 7:40It's the substitute. And of course, Lutron refers to
- 7:45the fact that it is the ransom or the price of freeing a slave
- 7:51anti Lutron and, and, and, and that's how he is the work.
- 7:55That's the work of the mediator. The fact that he gave himself,
- 8:01he died for our sins. He paid the cost of what we
- 8:05could not pay. So He was the full cost to
- 8:08substitute for us for sin. Galatians 313 say that it tells
- 8:14us that Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law.
- 8:18The law held us captive in its in its condemnation.
- 8:22And no one but Jesus Christ could have paid the price to
- 8:27free us from that bondage. No one but Him.
- 8:32Thank God for that. Huh?
- 8:34That He sent his Son to die for us?
- 8:36That was costly. That was costly.
- 8:39And we talked about on Wednesday night that, you know, that this
- 8:42was not just, it was not a pretty crucifixion, it was a it
- 8:49was a true sacrifice. A true sacrifice, just like all
- 8:55the animals in the Old Testament was a sacrifice.
- 9:00And how bloody those sacrifices were.
- 9:03That's how bloody the cross of Jesus Christ was.
- 9:07It's not the cute little pictures that we see where He
- 9:09has a little blood on his around his head or a little bit of
- 9:11blood on his hands. A little bit.
- 9:13No, it's not that. We're talking about a brutal,
- 9:18brutal sacrifice. He took on the sins of the whole
- 9:21world. He paid the sins of the entire
- 9:24world, of everybody. You want a reason to be
- 9:27thankful? There's another one.
- 9:30Think about Him on the cross and then think about the fact that
- 9:34it was meant for you because we were guilty.
- 9:38He wasn't even guilty. We were guilty of the sin.
- 9:42Bless your name Lord in the Old Testament.
- 9:46Now there were other go betweens, you know the Old
- 9:49Testament, the priest in the high priest.
- 9:51They were the mediators between God and man because the you
- 9:55know, the children of Israel didn't want to speak to God
- 9:59anymore. They were fearful.
- 10:00Moses was a type of mediator or go between between God and man
- 10:05are the 1st covenant, but it's only Jesus Christ and that all
- 10:09all all those mediators pointed to the mediator Jesus Christ,
- 10:14the true mediator, the one and only mediator.
- 10:18And then we go over here to verse 7.
- 10:20It says for which I was appointed A preacher.
- 10:25I was appointed A preacher and an apostle.
- 10:28I am speaking the truth in Christ and not lying.
- 10:32A teacher of the Gentiles in faith and truth.
- 10:37You know what's amazing is that Paul's now saying that I'm
- 10:42qualified. I was anointed.
- 10:45I was called to this ministry. And the ministry that he was
- 10:50called to was what was described in the verse before.
- 10:54The verse before where it says he gave himself a ransom for all
- 10:58to be testified in due time. The message that we give, the
- 11:02true gospel message, is the fact that Jesus Christ gave his life
- 11:06for our life so that we would have salvation.
- 11:12It's a simple gospel message. Jesus Christ died according to
- 11:16the Scriptures, and he was buried, and on the third day he
- 11:20rose again according to the Scriptures.
- 11:23It's a very simple gospel, but there's power in the gospel
- 11:28message. There's power, and Paul says
- 11:32that I was a preacher of that message.
- 11:35What does he mean a preacher? A preacher is one who heralds.
- 11:39He had the authority to herald that message publicly and
- 11:43proclaim the gospel message to all men.
- 11:48He said I was a preacher of that, and then he said I was an
- 11:51apostle. That means he was 1 cent.
- 11:54He was given a special mission from God himself.
- 11:59He was called and and then he says that I am speaking the
- 12:02truth in Christ and not lying A teacher of the Gentiles.
- 12:07Is there a difference between being a teacher and a preacher?
- 12:11Absolutely a teacher, a preacher heralds the message.
- 12:16He cries out the message he he he tells what the truth of the
- 12:19he tells the truth. That was the message that the
- 12:21message that he was sent to deliver.
- 12:23Most evangelists are your preacher.
- 12:26They just give the message. This is the truth.
- 12:28This is the true message. But the teachers, they actually
- 12:31teach us. They instruct us in the way of
- 12:33righteousness. They break down the message,
- 12:37they expound the message. That's a teacher.
- 12:42Teach us in the way of righteousness.
- 12:43Teach us in a way of holiness. Teach us in a way that's
- 12:46pleasing to God. Teach the doctrine that was
- 12:49given to us from the apostles. That's a teacher explains the
- 12:56right way. So yes, Paul was a preacher and
- 13:00he was a preacher of the Gentiles according to Acts 9 and
- 13:0315 said that he was sent to the Gentiles, but he was also sent
- 13:07to kings and he was also sent to the Jews as well.
- 13:10So this message he was sent to for everybody and, and it was A
- 13:14and it was a teach the Gentiles in faith, which again was
- 13:18justification, just as if you had not sinned.
- 13:21We are all justified. We're justified righteous by
- 13:25God. We're decreed, we're called
- 13:27righteous by God, not that we are righteous in what we do, but
- 13:31we're decried. We are declared righteous by God
- 13:35the Father. And that's the faith.
- 13:37And then in truth, that's the sanctification he teaches.
- 13:40Also, He makes disciples of men and women.
- 13:43He makes disciples, and that's what we should be doing.
- 13:46You see, after you are saved, then it is necessary for us to
- 13:51grow and the way we grow, and that's called the process of
- 13:55sanctification. We're learning the way of
- 13:57righteousness. We're learning the way of
- 13:59holiness. We're learning to walk more in
- 14:02the spirit and less in the flesh.
- 14:04We're learning that and that's how as a church body we tend to
- 14:08grow closer to the Lord. And now that he's talked about
- 14:12that and all this is coming through prayer.
- 14:15Keep that in mind. He's all dealing, He's still
- 14:17dealing with the issue of prayer there.
- 14:19You know, we should pray for, for the word to get out to
- 14:22everybody, We should pray. I heard one teacher say that you
- 14:27know it in the church now, there's more announcements and
- 14:30things of that nature than there is prayer.
- 14:34And we really need to focus on prayer.
- 14:36I'm glad that we have so many avenues here in this church that
- 14:40offer prayer. So many, so many.
- 14:44And you can all plug yourselves into it.
- 14:46We invite you to plug yourselves into those avenues of prayer
- 14:51because every one of those groups, whether it's a Thursday
- 14:54night Zoom group or whether it's the Thursday night group that
- 14:57meets here to pray about certain things, the the all of the Bible
- 15:03studies that should include prayer.
- 15:05I'm sure it does. When those things happen, that
- 15:08is all in worship to God. It's all in worship to God.
- 15:15So we pray because he died for all and his death was sufficient
- 15:21for all, but it's only efficient for those who believe, for those
- 15:29who believe. And then he goes to verse 8.
- 15:33And as we move to verse 8, we come to see now that we're now
- 15:36moving into an issue which is seen as being controversial, but
- 15:43it's not really controversial. If it is rightly divided, it's
- 15:50not really controversial. The world makes things
- 15:52controversial, but it's the word of God.
- 15:56It's the word of God. And before we even go there, I
- 15:59just want to go to second Timothy real quick.
- 16:02Chapter 3, Second Timothy chapter 3, we're going to just
- 16:05look at verse. Just going to read for verse 16.
- 16:09All Scripture, not some, not parts of it.
- 16:16All Scripture is given by inspiration of God and is
- 16:20profitable for doctrine and for reproof, for correction, for
- 16:25instruction and righteousness. We just talked about that, that
- 16:31the man of God or the woman of God may be complete, thoroughly
- 16:36equipped for every good work. So what we're about to go in
- 16:40here into here, this is not Paul's opinion.
- 16:47This is not just Paul's opinion. All scripture is inspired by
- 16:52God. It's in the Canon of Scripture.
- 16:55This is coming from God. So he, she, he says here in
- 17:01verse 8, I desire therefore that the men pray everywhere, lifting
- 17:10up holy hands without wrath and doubting.
- 17:14Let's stop there, he said. I desire, therefore, that the
- 17:18men pray everywhere. Now he's talking about not just
- 17:23mankind, meaning everybody. He's talking about men as in
- 17:27male gender, that they pray. And Paul is saying here that men
- 17:33should lead prayer in public services.
- 17:37Men should lead prayer. I know growing up I didn't see a
- 17:41lot of men leading prayer in public services.
- 17:44It was most leading women. I just see a lot of men leading
- 17:47it. But Paul says here that men
- 17:50should lead prayer. We know women will pray, but
- 17:55Paul's saying we want to see more men praying.
- 17:57Men pray leading. And now this is not a
- 18:00prohibition to say that women shouldn't pray in public.
- 18:04That's not what this is saying, and we want to get to that over
- 18:07in verse 9. But here he is making a point to
- 18:10say that men should be praying and should be leading and
- 18:14praying in public services, lifting up holy hands without
- 18:20wrath and doubting. So Paul's mentioned in three,
- 18:23three things that are essential. And we know with men praying in
- 18:28public, three things. First of all, he says lifting up
- 18:31holy hands and lifting up holy hands is actually cultural.
- 18:36It's Jewish culture that the men at that particular time when
- 18:39they prayed, they would pray extending their hands to heaven.
- 18:45Now that gesture of extending the hands of heaven, when you
- 18:48look at it, it really has a lot of different meaning or
- 18:51connotations to it. First of all, it's the
- 18:53connotation of surrender. It's surrender when a man lifts
- 18:59his hands, when a police officer tells a suspect to come out with
- 19:04your hands up, that means you are surrendering, that that
- 19:07person is surrendering to the authority of that police
- 19:10officer. He's surrendering.
- 19:13He is putting himself into custody, willingly putting
- 19:16himself into custody of that police officer.
- 19:19And that's exactly what we're doing when we lift our hands to
- 19:22the Lord. Back in the Old Testament, this
- 19:24was a sign of surrender to God. God, I surrender, I place myself
- 19:30under your authority. So the prayers that go up are
- 19:35prayers to the Lord submitting to his authority.
- 19:42And there's several scriptures that talk about the lifting of
- 19:45the hands. Turn with me really quick to
- 19:47Psalm 63 and look at verse four. He says thus I will bless you
- 19:53while I live. I will lift up my hands in your
- 19:58name and then go to Psalm 134 and Psalm 134 reads this way.
- 20:03Lift up your hands in the sanctuary and bless the Lord.
- 20:08And we know we read the story back in First Kings chapter 8
- 20:13and 22 that when Solomon prayed and he dedicated to temple.
- 20:18He lifted up his hands to heaven and he prayed when David prayed
- 20:26several times it's mentioned that he lifted up his hands to
- 20:29the Lord when he prayed. So that is a, it's a cultural
- 20:33position, but I just want to mention that we need to
- 20:37understand the lifting of the hands.
- 20:38It's an outward expression of where our hearts should be.
- 20:44It's not that important what we do with our hands.
- 20:47Now, God is more interested in the position of your heart when
- 20:52we pray. And then he goes in and he goes
- 20:55into that. So he says without wrath and
- 20:58without wrath means that it's, you know, you first of all,
- 21:01you're you. The hands that you're lifting up
- 21:02have to be holy hands. So it's got to be pure hands,
- 21:05right? Hands that we, we're not talking
- 21:07about, you know, practicing sin and then coming up and lifting
- 21:10your hands to pray. You know, that doesn't mean that
- 21:14if you have sin that you can't pray, you repent.
- 21:18And the repentance cleanses us. We confess, and that cleanses us
- 21:23before God and we can lift up our hands and pray.
- 21:26It's about lifting up cleansed hands.
- 21:28That means the heart is cleansed from whatever sin is morally or
- 21:32spiritually cleansed. But it's without wrath.
- 21:35And without wrath simply means without anger.
- 21:37It's without resentment. We should be praying without
- 21:40resentment. I shouldn't be up here praying
- 21:42and knowing I got something against that brother sitting
- 21:44back there or something against a sister sitting over there.
- 21:50Can't pray like that. I got to go make it right with
- 21:53them first. I got to go make it right with
- 21:55them and then I can pray. I don't want my prayers hindered
- 22:00by having all these ungodly things in my heart towards
- 22:03someone else, have an ought in my heart against a brother.
- 22:08I can't pray that way, Davis said.
- 22:11If I regard iniquity in my heart, he won't hear me.
- 22:15God won't hear me. So we have to have pure hearts
- 22:20and clean hands when we pray. And he said, and doubting,
- 22:23doubting actually means that we must pray in faith.
- 22:26We shouldn't be praying doubting.
- 22:28James said that when you pray, you know you, you, you should be
- 22:32praying without doubting. You ask without doubting.
- 22:34He said he who doubts is like a wave of the sea tossed to and
- 22:38fro by the wind. It it's an unstable person who
- 22:41doubts. When we pray, we pray believing.
- 22:47We pray believing, so we pray without doubt.
- 22:50So then we go on to verse 9. And this is where things get
- 22:55kind of interesting because he says here in like manner also,
- 22:58and don't miss that line, in like manner also, in like manner
- 23:04also, women adorn themselves in modest apparel with propriety
- 23:10and moderation, not with braided hair or gold or pearls or costly
- 23:15clothing. So what is he saying here?
- 23:18This is actually evidence to some degree that women can pray
- 23:23in public. It's fine for women to pray in
- 23:26public because he said in like manner.
- 23:28Also. In other words, in the same way,
- 23:30when women pray, their praying should be with adorning
- 23:35themselves in modest apparel. Men should pray with their
- 23:40hearts, not having wickedness or anger or art in their hearts.
- 23:45He emphasized that for men, not that anybody should, but that's
- 23:48what he emphasized for men And but for women, he said when you
- 23:52pray, if you want to, you know, when you pray, have modest
- 23:55apparel. Thank you for tuning in to
- 23:58Living Waters of Grace with Pastor Lewis Harrell.
- 24:02We're currently in the books of First and Second Timothy.
- 24:05Some of the things included in these New Testament letters from
- 24:09Paul are that the young and newly established Pastor Timothy
- 24:14was being encouraged to hold fast to what was true.
- 24:18He was challenged to confront and address the false teachers
- 24:22that were rising up. He was also reminded to accept
- 24:26his calling to the ministry with gratefulness and to address the
- 24:29happenings going on in the Ephesian church.
- 24:33Paul was imparting his experience and knowledge to the
- 24:37next generation. Timothy was receptive to
- 24:41learning and gleaning what he could from Paul's wisdom.
- 24:44This is how it should be in ministry across multiple
- 24:47generations. Those who have lived a little
- 24:50more life should be open to sharing their successes and also
- 24:55things they've learned along the way.
- 24:57That we're not a wind. The younger generations coming
- 25:00up can learn and appreciate much from those ahead of them, and
- 25:04perhaps avoid some of the same pitfalls that their mentors work
- 25:09through mentoring. It's a beautiful relationship
