- 0:17Hi and welcome to the Curve Weekly, the podcast that keeps you up to date with all the money,
- 0:22business and stock market tea.
- 0:24You know exactly what I needed to do, but it would take money to get there.
- 0:27Show me the money!
- 0:30For the record, feminism by definition is the belief that men and women should have equal rights
- 0:36and opportunities.
- 0:37Everyone should experience for us class at least once in their lives in Annie.
- 0:40Shouldn't miss out just because she can't afford it.
- 0:42Help me, I'm poor.
- 0:45What?
- 0:46Can you record your video?
- 0:47I am.
- 0:48What are you laughing at?
- 0:49I'd love not to do a video for these lives.
- 0:52It's 7 a.m. in the morning.
- 0:54It's like, can we do early in the morning?
- 0:55I was like, how early is early though?
- 0:57And then stuff's like, okay, I'm coming around now.
- 0:59I was like, well, well, baby, I've literally just got back from running my face.
- 1:01It's so sorry.
- 1:02It's like, give me at least 15 minutes for my skin to dry out.
- 1:04It's 5.30.
- 1:05Oh, god.
- 1:06I just couldn't sleep last night.
- 1:07I thought, you know what?
- 1:08Let's just get this shit done.
- 1:09So I've dreamed about the Curve.
- 1:11I actually was.
- 1:12Yeah, I was dreaming about the Curve last night.
- 1:15But they can, I were at a wedding in the weekend, and so apologies if so, it's a bit slow this
- 1:20morning.
- 1:21Oh, frog.
- 1:22They have two days, the day after, and the wedding.
- 1:24Which is not like, usually it's all around.
- 1:26Usually I'd be the one that's like, wedding, day after, but I was behaved, and I just went
- 1:31home early.
- 1:32I was reasonably behaved.
- 1:33I think it's actually, yeah, I don't know what's been, yeah, anyway, I've been like
- 1:37handling my album.
- 1:38Yeah, you and me.
- 1:40Yeah, for a party.
- 1:43But like, I was just saying to Vic off the microphone, I was like, we were like, some
- 1:47of the only two single girls that we had actually, like, really, god, I didn't even
- 1:50notice.
- 1:51Like, so oblivious.
- 1:52Anyway, the funniest thing happened when you left.
- 1:55So one of the guys who I felt like had been flirting with me the whole day, someone else
- 2:00had been like, oh yeah, it was just banging on about how much you wanted to get with
- 2:03the Vic.
- 2:04Oh my god.
- 2:05Oh my god.
- 2:06Why are we, that's so funny, that we're like the last two single girls at the wedding,
- 2:10and all the guys are just like, I feel like it's been like that for years for me.
- 2:14And then I'm like, this will be the last wedding, I'm single, this will be the last
- 2:18one.
- 2:19I'll still be 45 and be like, so funny.
- 2:22Oh gosh.
- 2:23Okay.
- 2:24So week two of the Curve Weekly.
- 2:25So this is our new podcast, which is a 10 minute wrap up of all the key things that are
- 2:30going on in the stock market, the business world, the news world, whatever, like we need
- 2:34to know to kind of be aware of what's happening in the economy.
- 2:38And the boring world that no one wants to know about, but everyone should know about.
- 2:41I heard someone in a weekend say that they were like, I just kind of bothered reading
- 2:44the news.
- 2:45I was like, maybe.
- 2:46Love you.
- 2:47It's a good week.
- 2:48It's not like, it's actually a deal for you.
- 2:51But use, we had another strong week last week in the US stock market.
- 2:56So strong means it's going well, as it's going up, like stocks are selling strong, strong
- 3:02week, up, down, yeah, those kind of act.
- 3:04And so this is the second week, we had a good week, the previous week.
- 3:08So the first two weeks of 2023 have been really good, which is, which is great.
- 3:13So the stock market, the S&P500, was up 2.2%.
- 3:17And that is the main index in the US for a year, doesn't it?
- 3:20To the top 500 US publicly listed companies.
- 3:23So that's up 5% now for the start of the year, which is pretty good.
- 3:27Considering last year was like an absolute chit-chat.
- 3:30Yeah.
- 3:31That's quite good.
- 3:32Yeah.
- 3:33I mean, we're here for the long term, long term, long game.
- 3:37And then the NASDAQ, which is the more high growth, high octane index in the US,
- 3:43that was up 4% last week.
- 3:46And high octane, just for anyone that's tuned in for the first time, they're like, what the
- 3:49f**k?
- 3:50Or any petal heads?
- 3:51Petal heads are not high octane.
- 3:52But it basically just means they're quite volatile, like, risky stocks, more, like, technology
- 3:57based stuff that goes up, right, right, and then down a lot.
- 4:02Yeah.
- 4:03So volatile.
- 4:04So the, I don't know the word for this.
- 4:06I know we, the gyrations, you know, like, gyrations.
- 4:09And isn't that, like, like, magic mic, like, gyrating on somebody?
- 4:13Well, like, gyrations means, like, big moves, like, big moves out, big moves down.
- 4:18So the, the extreme moves, I guess, is stock market is gyrating at the moment.
- 4:24Yeah.
- 4:25Oh, babe.
- 4:26I'm going to go with it after we've done the support.
- 4:29The record is actually termed.
- 4:30Yes.
- 4:31But it just means that the moves are bigger, so the moves are bigger, the moves down are
- 4:35bigger.
- 4:36Okay.
- 4:37So the last two, I've lost it.
- 4:39Oh, onto more important things.
- 4:41So last week was really important because it was the start of corporate earnings season.
- 4:46Now that just means that in the US, if you're a public listed company, you have rules that
- 4:51you have to buy by.
- 4:52And one of those is that you have to disclose your financial results to the public.
- 4:56So they know what they're investing in and they know how to come as performing.
- 5:00And they have to do that four times a year.
- 5:02And so that started last week.
- 5:04And so did they slowly start releasing the results?
- 5:07Like, it's like a staggering, right?
- 5:08Yes.
- 5:09And now it's my turn.
- 5:10Yes.
- 5:11And here are my results.
- 5:12Okay.
- 5:13Exactly.
- 5:14And usually that all the banks go first, so I'm talking like JP Morgan, City Group, Bank
- 5:19of America, these big, big investment banks, like Goldman Sachs, for example, they have operations
- 5:25in so many countries and do give quite a good insight into what's happening.
- 5:29So what is the bigger global picture?
- 5:31So they've actually reported pretty good results.
- 5:34So we're not hitting into a global recession.
- 5:36Well, it's from the commentary that they put out, going to be more mild than we have
- 5:42expected, which is good.
- 5:43A mild recession.
- 5:44Yeah.
- 5:45It's not spicy.
- 5:46We can do all that.
- 5:47Yeah.
- 5:48Yeah.
- 5:49So people were kind of expecting quite a massive recession or, you know, didn't really
- 5:51know what to expect.
- 5:52If it was panicking.
- 5:53Yeah.
- 5:54And that's a little bit like, we can do this.
- 5:55We can do this.
- 5:56We got this.
- 5:57Deep breaths, deep breaths.
- 5:58Yeah.
- 5:59Okay.
- 6:00Cool.
- 6:01Yeah.
- 6:02So that's why the market's gone out.
- 6:03Okay.
- 6:04That means people are buying those stocks, other stocks.
- 6:07And then, yeah.
- 6:08So this week, pretty big week with other company earnings and we've got Netflix coming
- 6:13up.
- 6:14Yeah.
- 6:15So that should be interesting.
- 6:16And speaking of Netflix, Disney also had an announcement during the week.
- 6:21So they're CEO.
- 6:22So now we did some social posts throughout this.
- 6:25I feel like it actually went out onto the curve weekly.
- 6:27Was it?
- 6:28I used to.
- 6:29I'm about the old CEO returning to Disney, which was great news.
- 6:35He'd driven Disney's share price up massively and he'd done fantastic wealth.
- 6:39Disney.
- 6:40So he's back in the seat now.
- 6:41And one of the first things that he has said is that he has introduced a really strict
- 6:46back to work policy.
- 6:48Now why is this important?
- 6:49Well, you know, kind of, you can take either side the argument, but some people are like,
- 6:54oh my gosh, no, we're now in a world where you should be able to work from home as many
- 6:58days as you want.
- 6:59You should be able to have that flexibility.
- 7:01Other people are like, no, for the business, and this is his argument, is that, you know,
- 7:05being a creative media company, needing to be innovative.
- 7:09You need people to get that.
- 7:10You need people to be brainstorming, throwing ideas off each other.
- 7:13And so I kind of get what he's saying, you know, so he's saying you have to be in the
- 7:16office Monday to Thursday.
- 7:18A lot of people won't like that and maybe they'll lose some employees.
- 7:21But as someone who's worked in teams of creative people like Asin producing a show or, you
- 7:27know, working in radio, television or whatever, for me, like, that's what I miss the most
- 7:32actually since working on the curve full time has been that lack of interaction with other
- 7:37people to bounce ideas off.
- 7:38I really think when you're around other people who can stimulate ideas and you can brainstorm
- 7:46with, like, that's really powerful.
- 7:48I actually understand where it's coming from.
- 7:49I think you'd be annoyed if you're in the accounts team and you're like, oh mate, like,
- 7:52yeah, I can do this at home.
- 7:55So that was, that was big news for Disney.
- 7:58We also had Tesla, so their stock has had a pretty tough run last year.
- 8:03So it's down about 65%.
- 8:04Does it still down that much?
- 8:06So and this was all the backup, this was all off the back of issues in China, factories
- 8:11closing, unable to get the cars out and through production.
- 8:14And then also the whole saga with Elon Musk and Twitter, you know, is he going to be distracted.
- 8:18He's going to have to sell shares in Tesla.
- 8:20So that both of those kind of big issues caused, well, the main reasons for Tesla's share
- 8:25price falling.
- 8:26But last week, they've actually announced 15% price cuts to most of their vehicles and the
- 8:32stock sold off on the back of that news.
- 8:34What, sorry, sold off means the stock price went down, but hold on, why did that happen?
- 8:40Well, the understanding is that it's, it's due to lack of demand.
- 8:45Well, because you wouldn't cut prices if you've got good orders and you've got good sales
- 8:50and so, yeah, so it's not a good sign or, you know, competition, there's other really
- 8:58good electric vehicles out there now, you know, Tesla used to be the poster child for
- 9:03electric vehicles, but you know, all the other brands are doing them now.
- 9:05So it's kind of, it's never a good sign when you have to cut the price of your product
- 9:10because it means that you're trying to stimulate interest and stimulate demand.
- 9:14Oh my God.
- 9:15What other company news is coming in?
- 9:16And then next one we had Apple, so this is quite, when I read this headline, I was like,
- 9:24oh my gosh.
- 9:25And then I was like, no, good on you.
- 9:27And I was literally like floppin' in my head.
- 9:29Anyway, the headline is that Apple's Tim Cooks, the CEO of Apple, takes a 50% pay hit
- 9:35after she holds a feedback.
- 9:36Now, you're saying they're going, oh my God, nice, he's taking a 50% cut in his, in his
- 9:41pay in his salary because the sheer price of Apple hasn't done very well last year.
- 9:45So she hold has been like, hey, you know, that needs to be reflected in your compensation
- 9:49or your salary.
- 9:50So it's brutal, isn't it?
- 9:52But then, if you're thinking about his compensation or his salary was $100 million, and now he's
- 9:58giving $50 million.
- 9:59$100 million a year.
- 10:00I know.
- 10:01What the hell?
- 10:02I didn't even know there were jobs that paid.
- 10:06I know.
- 10:07It was quite eye-opening.
- 10:08Also gutted if you're getting half of what you were getting though.
- 10:11I know there's still a lot of money, but that's like going from $100k to $50k.
- 10:16Yeah.
- 10:17Which is quite a huge change.
- 10:18Which is quite a huge change.
- 10:19Yeah.
- 10:20But yeah, this is all around the sheer price falling, it fell about 20, 23% last year,
- 10:26which isn't really that bad.
- 10:27If we just talked about Tesla and the sheer price is down 65%, but this is where as a
- 10:33shareholder, you actually have a say, and you can stand up and go, you know what, no,
- 10:38their compensation needs to reflect the fact that Apple didn't do too well last year.
- 10:42And so that's what shareholder has done, and so the board, who controls his salary,
- 10:48has said, okay, well, he'll get a 50% pay go.
- 10:50Oh, that's quite intense.
- 10:51Yeah.
- 10:52And so if anyone listening, he was like, oh, what is that?
- 10:53I'm kind of confused.
- 10:54What is that?
- 10:55It's a shareholder.
- 10:56If you're a shareholder, you've bought shares in the company, right?
- 10:59So like, how?
- 11:00I mean, there we need.
- 11:01You get rights with those shares.
- 11:03You get rights you have to have a say.
- 11:05Which is weird, because you always say that, and I'm like, but do you?
- 11:08If I own $10 an Apple, do I have a really good a say?
- 11:11But like, hearing something like that, it's quite cool.
- 11:13Yeah.
- 11:14And the other really good thing, which for me is a really big green flag, is that with
- 11:20CEOs, usually there's like a base amount they get paid, and then there's kind of what
- 11:25we call this a sheer bonus, which means that part of it is paid in shares.
- 11:31And his has now increased from, so it used to be 50-50, 50% base, 50% shares.
- 11:36And now it's 25% base, 75% share.
- 11:39Oh, that's a good sign.
- 11:40Yeah.
- 11:41So he's very much incentivised.
- 11:42I mean, you're already getting 50 million.
- 11:44So, I mean, you're incentivised to a point.
- 11:46But he's now more incentivised than he was last year to regenerate Apple's share price.
- 11:53And you still invested in Apple?
- 11:55Yes.
- 11:56Yeah.
- 11:57So, do you, does it freak you out seeing the cut in his salary or any of that news?
- 12:01I don't know.
- 12:02Like, this is one of, in my opinion, one of the best companies in the world.
- 12:06It's been around forever, you know, it has done fantastically well, so I don't know what
- 12:14other CEOs get paid in, kind of, as some people have under companies, versus Apple's.
- 12:20But I would say that Apple's is probably one of the most highest paid salaries, but you've
- 12:25got one of the toughest jobs in the world.
- 12:27God, you could not, could not pay me to do that.
- 12:29So, people write CEO of Apple.
- 12:32I'd be like, what do I do?
- 12:34I'm so out of my depth.
- 12:36But even though one day, it is just saying the same, I'd be like, okay, cool.
- 12:40Yep, there's one million dollars.
- 12:41Thank you, bye.
- 12:42Yeah, true.
- 12:43And then lastly, just to wrap up, crypto, and I've got some news for you, so.
- 12:48Is it going up?
- 12:49Yes.
- 12:50So.
- 12:52So with the market going up, crypto has also gone up these last few weeks.
- 12:58Interesting.
- 12:59Yeah, so it's up, I think it's about, Bitcoin's up about 10% and Ethereum's up about 17%.
- 13:05Remember, they fell a lot last year, about both about 60%.
- 13:10So it's just bouncing on the bottom still.
- 13:13But it's positive news, and that's been great.
- 13:19I just gave Vicka let's wrap this shit up.
- 13:23And that was it.
- 13:24And now I'm done.
- 13:25For anyone who has listened to this podcast and thought, you know what?
- 13:28Still don't really know what you're talking about.
- 13:30Or, hey, this sounds interesting, and I want to learn more.
