- 0:00Speaker 1: You know, back of Caffe or Gin entertaining the folks here, engage.
- 0:04Speaker 2: He's so much fun. You sit here.
- 0:06Speaker 1: I got the best job in the world working with
- 0:09Speaker 1: this guy. Husky's in Goinova. We touched on that Tomorrow
- 0:12Speaker 1: night six thirty on the radio pregame. The twenty fifteen
- 0:16Speaker 1: and sixteen National Championship teams will be honored. They will
- 0:19Speaker 1: go to the Huskies of honor. Brianna Stewart, Morgan Tuck,
- 0:23Speaker 1: Mariah Jefferson.
- 0:24Speaker 2: Yeah, they're pretty good. They'll be here.
- 0:26Speaker 1: Brianna Palito, who was part of that senior class. Fact
- 0:30Speaker 1: she hit the last bucket of that twenty sixteen season
- 0:32Speaker 1: against Syracuse, Tarny Lawler, Katie lu Samuelson, Kia Stokes, who
- 0:37Speaker 1: has had a nice WNBA career for herself, Keia Nurse,
- 0:40Speaker 1: and Colleena Musquette Lewis. Those will be the players that
- 0:43Speaker 1: will be here representing those teams. When I think of Kalina,
- 0:49Speaker 1: she always came up in the clutch for you in
- 0:52Speaker 1: the postseason. There was never a game where she didn't
- 0:55Speaker 1: have double figures in a tournament game, whether it be
- 0:57Speaker 1: Biggiess Tournament or the NCAA Tournament. And she was an
- 1:00Speaker 1: All American a couple of times, and I think twice
- 1:03Speaker 1: she won the Big East Tournament's Most Outstanding Player freshman
- 1:07Speaker 1: and I don't want to say junior year maybe, but
- 1:12Speaker 1: she was always dependable and she was that perfect compliment
- 1:15Speaker 1: for like Stewie and Tuck and Steph and Bria.
- 1:19Speaker 3: Yeah, when when Klena graduated, when she finished school, she
- 1:32Speaker 3: was arguably the greatest three points shoot ever played college basketball.
- 1:37Speaker 2: She had the record when she graduated. Yeah.
- 1:38Speaker 3: Okay, now that's a lot of may threes on a
- 1:43Speaker 3: bunch of really good teams. So it's not like some
- 1:48Speaker 3: kids back then and today they take twenty shots and
- 1:52Speaker 3: they score sixteen points. She take twelve shots and scored
- 1:58Speaker 3: twenty five points. Because we work really really hard on
- 2:03Speaker 3: being efficient because with all these Ald Americans, how am
- 2:06Speaker 3: I going to give you twenty five shots? Twenty three shots,
- 2:09Speaker 3: twenty two shots? Not possible. So you're when you do
- 2:13Speaker 3: get the ball in your hands, you need to be efficient.
- 2:16Speaker 3: Maybe you get twelve shots, maybe you get twelve, maybe
- 2:18Speaker 3: you get eleven, maybe you get ten. Maybe so you
- 2:21Speaker 3: go five six for ten, make a couple of free throws,
- 2:24Speaker 3: and you all walk out of there with fifteen points
- 2:26Speaker 3: and we win all the time. And then some guys,
- 2:28Speaker 3: you know, they're going to get big numbers because they're
- 2:30Speaker 3: just better than everybody else. And Kleina, all she did
- 2:34Speaker 3: was shoot the ball her freshman year, and she led
- 2:37Speaker 3: the team in minutes play as a freshman. She played
- 2:39Speaker 3: thirty one minutes because I knew like there might be
- 2:42Speaker 3: a five minute stretch where the game will end right now,
- 2:45Speaker 3: because she'll make five in a row. The thing that
- 2:51Speaker 3: happened between her freshman year and senior year is she
- 2:53Speaker 3: became a really, really, really, really an amazing basketball.
- 2:58Speaker 2: Player, very underrated re bounder.
- 3:00Speaker 3: Not just a shooter. She was really rebounded. She's a
- 3:04Speaker 3: good passer, she was the well, she couldn't have been
- 3:08Speaker 3: the best greener when she played with Steph because Steff's
- 3:10Speaker 3: the greatest screener in the history of basketball. But she
- 3:13Speaker 3: became a really good screener. She just became an all
- 3:17Speaker 3: around basketball player. And that's what I was most proud
- 3:21Speaker 3: of is you know, she came in with the reputation
- 3:23Speaker 3: of being a shooter and she turned into one of
- 3:25Speaker 3: the best basketball players at Yukon.
- 3:29Speaker 1: Two time All American, Right, It's amazing yes, it's amazing
- 3:31Speaker 1: that the two kids that were twenty three back to back,
- 3:34Speaker 1: Mayan Kleena.
- 3:34Speaker 2: You're talking like five thousand points between those two. Oh yeah,
- 3:38Speaker 2: in eight year span.
- 3:38Speaker 3: That's a lot of points. Yeah, somebody should take twenty
- 3:41Speaker 3: three just for to hel of it and just go,
- 3:44Speaker 3: you know, tell their grand kids down the road. You know,
- 3:46Speaker 3: everybody who wore my number, we scored like six thousand points.
- 3:51Speaker 1: You know, I was looking back and this is a norm.
- 3:54Speaker 1: Of course, Yukon is always among the national leaders in
- 3:57Speaker 1: assist per game. They lead the country this year about
- 3:59Speaker 1: twenty four and a half. Looking at the twenty fifteen team,
- 4:02Speaker 1: you had five players with one hundred plus assists. Maria
- 4:07Speaker 1: Jefferson had one ninety one, Stuie had one hundred and
- 4:10Speaker 1: twenty two, Kalina had one hundred and four, Morgan had
- 4:12Speaker 1: one hundred and fifteen, Kenners had one hundred and eight.
- 4:15Speaker 1: There have been some years where you've had five get
- 4:17Speaker 1: over one hundred. Four over one hundred is always good.
- 4:20Speaker 1: Last year's team had four players over one hundred assists.
- 4:23Speaker 1: But that just tells you how unselfish. Now there is
- 4:25Speaker 1: an asterisk to one of these. The two thousand and
- 4:28Speaker 1: one two thousand and two team, they only had two
- 4:30Speaker 1: players with one hundred plus, but Sue and d both
- 4:32Speaker 1: had over two hundred.
- 4:34Speaker 2: Yeah, and that that was the anomaly. Well you remember
- 4:37Speaker 2: you got what year was that? The one to o
- 4:39Speaker 2: two team? Yeah? What do you remember that?
- 4:41Speaker 3: We had Shaye as Fat on the team. They ain't
- 4:45Speaker 3: passing your assault at dinner, all right, So we had
- 4:51Speaker 3: we had Shae ands Fat, We had Asian swim one.
- 4:54Speaker 2: Yeah, all right, So we had a lot of.
- 4:57Speaker 3: Guys on our team. You passed the ball to them,
- 4:59Speaker 3: they they never come and they're never passing it to anybody.
- 5:02Speaker 3: But what they all could do was they could finish,
- 5:05Speaker 3: So if you were sure, indeed, they're smart enough to
- 5:07Speaker 3: like and that's you know, that's why they were great players.
- 5:13Speaker 3: They didn't really need a lot of shots. They didn't
- 5:15Speaker 3: really need that. But you know, when you have that
- 5:17Speaker 3: many players that can pass the ball, you are really
- 5:21Speaker 3: really really hard to play against. You know, And people
- 5:23Speaker 3: ask me all the time, like what are you looking
- 5:25Speaker 3: for in recruiting? I said, well, you mean like talent obviously,
- 5:28Speaker 3: if you have the kind of talent that can help
- 5:31Speaker 3: you play at Ukon. Yeah, and then can you like
- 5:35Speaker 3: be unselfish and be a great teammate? You know, so
- 5:38Speaker 3: we watch and you know, how do you act? You know,
- 5:40Speaker 3: you're a jerk or you're a great teammate, You're a
- 5:42Speaker 3: good kid. You bitch at the rest all the time.
- 5:45Speaker 3: You know what are You're a great kid? And next,
- 5:49Speaker 3: can you pass the ball? Will you pass the ball?
- 5:53Speaker 3: Do you enjoy passing the ball? So that's why we
- 5:57Speaker 3: always lead the country and assists because if a kick
- 6:00Speaker 3: can pass, I don't recruit them because imagine you got
- 6:04Speaker 3: five guys out on the floor and all five of
- 6:06Speaker 3: them were high school Americans, and four of them don't
- 6:10Speaker 3: want to pass the ball.
- 6:12Speaker 2: That's hard.
- 6:13Speaker 3: Yeah, now you know I made fun of those other guys,
- 6:17Speaker 3: Feda Shay and all those guys. They were great scores,
- 6:20Speaker 3: but if you were open, they would get you the
- 6:22Speaker 3: ball after they tried to score.
- 6:27Speaker 2: All right, Well, take a break.
- 6:28Speaker 1: We're gonna have a little fun with Gino when we
- 6:30Speaker 1: come back on the Yukon Women's Basketball Coaches Show.
- 6:33Speaker 2: We're live at Cafe or here on Learfield. Stay with us.
