Latest / Early Edition with Ryan Bridge / Ryan Bridge: Labour's getting protest votes
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: People have been looking at the polls, and that was
- 0:02Speaker 1: at home yesterday looking at all the stories about the polls.
- 0:05Speaker 1: I don't think people are telling pollsters that they would
- 0:08Speaker 1: vote for labor because they would actually vote for labor.
- 0:11Speaker 1: Labour hasn't got any policies. They are an empty vessel.
- 0:15Speaker 1: It's captain still, according to most recent polling, less popular
- 0:18Speaker 1: than Luxon. This is a protest vote. They're telling the
- 0:22Speaker 1: Prime Minister, hey, hurry up and do something else to
- 0:25Speaker 1: rescue the economy that the last lot and the trade
- 0:28Speaker 1: will have suppressed. You don't throw the baby out with
- 0:30Speaker 1: the bathwater and back a team that has no plan.
- 0:33Speaker 1: That clown, literally a clown that's running in the Wellington
- 0:37Speaker 1: Meryal race, has more policies than hipkins right now. He
- 0:40Speaker 1: wants to turn the base and Reserve into a swamp.
- 0:44Speaker 1: Sure it's mad, but at least it's a policy. Late
- 0:47Speaker 1: last year and earlier this year, the recovery was on track.
- 0:50Speaker 1: It was heading in the right direction. They got hit
- 0:53Speaker 1: by Trump's Liberation Day. Confidence and investment took a massive hit.
- 0:57Speaker 1: The markets were in free fall. Remember that long ago,
- 1:00Speaker 1: but you do forget it's throwing everything. Of course now
- 1:04Speaker 1: You can argue that National went too hard and fast
- 1:07Speaker 1: on cutting the spending and stopping infrastructure projects, but at
- 1:10Speaker 1: the same time they were voted in to stop wasteful
- 1:14Speaker 1: spending on dumb stuff. That's what we asked them to do.
- 1:18Speaker 1: Many think that hasn't actually gone far enough. Just yesterday
- 1:22Speaker 1: we learn of one hundred jobs going at the Reserve Bank,
- 1:24Speaker 1: which under Adrian Or wanted a budget of more than
- 1:28Speaker 1: a billion dollars and to keep twice the number of
- 1:32Speaker 1: staff that they started the pandemic with. Does that sound
- 1:36Speaker 1: reasonable to you? This comes down to a question of
- 1:40Speaker 1: who is best place to invest in this country, the
- 1:43Speaker 1: private sector or the state. The answer of courses a
- 1:46Speaker 1: bit of both, But it's chicken or egg stuff right now.
- 1:51Speaker 1: One thing is for sure. If the only thing capable
- 1:54Speaker 1: of keeping this country afloat is government borrowing like the
- 1:57Speaker 1: last lot did, then we'll only ever end up back
- 2:01Speaker 1: in this same position over and over again. The medicine
- 2:05Speaker 1: needed to dig us out of this hole is nasty, tastes, disgusting,
- 2:10Speaker 1: completely unpalatable, but the disease it's treating was worse. For
- 2:16Speaker 1: more from early edition with Ryan Bridge. Listen live to
- 2:19Speaker 1: news talks it'd be from five am weekdays, or follow
- 2:22Speaker 1: the podcast on iHeartRadio
