- 1:22Welcome to the Mcnickels Sports Arena in Denver, Colorado, the home of the Denver Nuggets who this afternoon play host to the Chicago Bulls.
- 1:35Hi everybody, I'm Gary Bender along with Steve Jones and Steve we have two clubs coming in here seeking consistency.
- 1:42Gary, both teams have had their problems. Chicago down early in the season and they've been trying to get up off the floor all season long.
- 1:49They have had a streak going and look like they were going to get it turned around and they've been down.
- 1:53Denver on the other hand, got off to the usual quick start and they sputtered and they have been trying to catch the fast rising Kansas City Kings ever since then.
- 2:01But they have it turned around here playing better basketball.
- 2:04Well, Chicago has defeated Denver on the two previous occasions winning right here in the Nuggets Arena for the first time.
- 2:09They want a big game here. They'd seem to and it seemed as though they had things turned around when a back to back series played some good basketball.
- 2:15And then they struggle again. They've been back down and they're trying to get it back up.
- 2:19A lot of skill more you visit with him. What'd you ask him?
- 2:23Well, I got a chance to talk with the arts and ask him if they would really get their situation turned around.
- 2:28240 pounds from Kentucky. Go, Captain of the Nuggets. Number 44, Chris.
- 2:33We've got the things that we want turning around. And me personally, I feel that there's some things that I've got to do as a captain and as a leader.
- 2:39And influence or encourage our guys to come out and play hard.
- 2:43I know we're lacking a few things, but yet instill with the things that we do have, we've got to take advantage of it.
- 2:49When you talk about leadership, do you think you can apply that type of pressure and make the Scott Mays, Mickey Johnson and Wilbur Hollins play up to the potential they did a couple of years ago?
- 2:59Well, not necessarily apply pressure. But I think in terms of convincing the guys what it's all about to come out and play hard and play to the up to their potentials and hopefully get a good result.
- 3:12So any results. Right. Let's talk about you for a quick second. You're going to go to the All-Star game again, big fella.
- 3:17And I know you're always happy to participate in those things. You're looking forward to being in Detroit.
- 3:21Absolutely. As any player in the NBA would say, it's a great honor to be chosen or selected for the All-Star team. And once again, I'm really happy to be a part of it.
- 3:32On the other hand, George McGinnis will also be playing in the NBA All-Star game, which will be televised right here on CBS, along with his teammate David Thompson.
- 3:42Again, is coming over, of course, from the Philadelphia 76ers this year in the trade with Bobby Jones and Ralph Simpson. He's a big, powerful man at six foot eight.
- 3:51And he's been involved in games this year where the Nuggets have been losing close ones. Seventeen games they've lost by six points or less.
- 3:59I asked George about those close losses.
- 4:05Yeah, it's been a characteristic of our team so far. And then the losses, I think that after the season gets down to the wire that we're going to look back and feel awful bad about.
- 4:15But the one thing that's I feel positive about them losses is that we stuck in there and we hung in there and we battled.
- 4:21You need to stay around to the end more often. You fouled out, I think, twelve times in eleven of those games, your team has lost.
- 4:27Yes, I've had a problem with fouls this year and we've had a problem winning them ballgames because of the fact that our team goes to me a lot.
- 4:36And hopefully today I'll be able to stay in the game and make a positive effect on the team.
- 4:44And so we're ready to go as both these clubs at center circle. Our officiating crew will be Lee Jones, the crew chief, Terry Durham and Hugh Hollins.
- 4:53You see the starting lineup in Chicago says a starting five. Well, they haven't had it for a long time.
- 4:58Wilbur Holland at one guard and Scott May is starting to the other forward. He has a ball right now along with Mickey Johnson.
- 5:04This is Johnson had thirty three points in the game earlier this year against Denver rebound. Bobby Wilkerson looks at it now for the Denver Nuggets.
- 5:11This is David Thompson. He'll be joined out there by Charlie Scott at the guard spots. Bobby Wilkerson, George McGinnis, the forwards and Dan Issel will be in the middle.
- 5:20And it's turned over. Scott May comes away with it. Chicago has really been tough on Denver. They played excellent basketball. All the games have been close.
- 5:29The problem for Chicago is they've been a little lacking in the first year as far as offensive firepower go. They went down and now they have begun to put it together.
- 5:37They've got their best offensive unit out on the court. Now we should have an excellent offensive basketball game.
- 5:42David Thompson in bounds of all the Charlie Scott's got averaging just over twelve points a game. That's a career low for him, but he's contributed in other ways, particularly in the assist department.
- 5:51And we have a traveling call on David Thompson. Thompson was somewhat sensational Friday night. He had a tremendous game, probably his best all around game of the season.
- 6:00He rebounded well, passed the ball well, played defense well, just did everything to ask for a play of his ability. He had six dunks in that game. He blocked the shot that everybody's talking about.
- 6:09Here's Gilmore backing in on this. Scott May may try to come away with it. We have a loose ball foul.
- 6:16There's a problem for us. We're trying to keep Gilmore from forcing the ball inside. Well, you know, they were teammates at Kentucky in the ABA and Dan knows artist Gilmore as well as anyone.
- 6:25But Gilmore is just able to out maneuver and overpower Dan Issel. And that's where his advantage is.
- 6:32Mickey Johnson picked up the foul. That's the first of the game just underway. First period, Issel outside rebound. Theus after Wilbur Holland. Holland started this year as the starting guard.
- 6:43The first twenty one game. He's back in there now. Out it comes to Scott. Back is Theus. Scott having trouble and he's going to have to reset. Nice pass to Issel. And that's what Charlie Scott's been doing.
- 6:55Charlie Scott's been giving the ball up well and early in the season to hurt him because he wasn't looking at the hoop. Now he's turned it around and gotten some offense going himself.
- 7:03So the Nuggets got on the scoreboard. Here's Theus six foot seven inside to Gilmore. Seven two against six nine. Rebound McGinnis. McGinnis. What a horse he is on the board.
- 7:13Well, George McGinnis is all that Denver has ever needed in the sense that they have a big strong guy who can take it through the hole just like that.
- 7:21Boy, he went around Mickey Johnson like he was standing still. He may have done a little two step. He got away with that little NBA shuffle and they got the hoop and they got a four point lead.
- 7:30Four nothing. Denver. Theus averaging sixteen point two with the basketball. Scott May hasn't played a lot but boy they're glad to have him back after starting the first game.
- 7:40He's done undergoing knee surgery second time in two years. Johnson's rebound Wilkerson and we have another foul coming up. Mickey Johnson and he's picked up two in a hurry.
- 7:51Well, that's been a problem for Mickey Johnson. He's an offensive player and his game sort of goes the way his offense goes. He made two tries at the hoop. He missed them both and he picked up fouls afterwards after trying to get the ball.
- 8:01As an end result fifty four Mark Landsberger sent and replacing Mickey Johnson. Johnson had that sensational game of thirty three points against Denver earlier this year but he's having some back trouble.
- 8:11Well, he's having some back trouble and maybe more in his head than anything else. He is kind of a psychological player and when everything is going well for him he plays well.
- 8:19Wilkerson who has been up and down and he had a streak with his offense was really going well and now he's shooting about thirty five percent from the field and really struggling.
- 8:29He's in a shooting slump. This guy has started the last fifteen games at forward and Denver's gone ten and five during that stretch so he's fit in very well at that forward spot after playing a guard most of last year.
- 8:41It's so important to have that team chemistry and get them in the line if they have it. Boy, there's something that's impossible to stop.
- 8:49And now it's five to Denver. David Thompson, you can see he has the left leg wrapped. He's had all kinds of nagging injuries. Little groin problems, a little knee injury.
- 9:01He got knocked out early in the season and that hurt him a bit but as he said on Friday night he played his best all-around game. His leg was wrapped in two.
- 9:08There's a move by David Thompson. All-NBA and for the third straight year on the starting All-Star squad on next Sunday's game. Seven to Denver.
- 9:20Gilmore against Issel. Nice move.
- 9:24A little finger roll inside and that keeps Chicago close. Artis Gilmore comes in here. Ford in the NBA and scoring just under twenty-five a game. Wilkerson out to Scott. They're moving the ball very well. Thompson.
- 9:39Another assist for Scott. Thompson hits outside and Denver's off and rolling. The thing that Chicago does not want to let Denver do is get a quick start here at their home court even though they haven't been a devastating pass.
- 9:52Boy you can see Lansberger and McInnis going up. There's not a lot of room when they go up. McInnis showing great speed getting that ball down to Thompson.
- 9:59I don't think David Thompson was quite ready to handle that pass but Scott is.
- 10:03Charlie Scott, he lost his confidence last year as a shooter didn't he?
- 10:08Well there's no question about it. He's playing in a new situation coming from Boston to Los Angeles. He tried to fit in with Kareem and some other people there and just did not look at the basket.
- 10:17He hurt himself but he's back right on top. He's Charlie Scott that we knew at Phoenix and Boston.
- 10:28A lot of cars are like pizzas. To get a lot on them you gotta pay a lot extra.
- 10:33But not the 1979 Chevy Chevette. It comes with a lot already on it.
- 10:37Chevette ignores the pizza principle. With it you get an AM radio, reclining bucket seats, console, white striped tires and more all at no extra cost.
- 10:46So avoid the pizza principle. Get a car with a lot already on it. Get the best selling hatchback in America.
- 10:52Chevy Chevette. It's a lot of car for the money. Hi Richie. Hi kid.
- 10:58The Miller people promised me a case of light beer if I could keep this ball spinning for the length of this commercial.
- 11:02Now I'm not one to show off but I do just about anything for a few light beers.
- 11:06You see light's got a third less calories than the regular beer and it's less filling so I can stay loose.
- 11:10But the thing I like best is the taste and I believe it this time that somebody here owes me a case of that taste.
- 11:18Thanks a lot boys. See you around.
- 11:21Light beer from Miller. Everything you always wanted in a beer and less.
- 11:29Three unidentified 19 inch color TV pictures. Each the best of its brand.
- 11:34Over a thousand people saw them and picked the one with the best overall picture. They didn't pick America's biggest seller, Zenith.
- 11:41Or the second biggest, RCA. Over 60% picked the 19 inch Sylvania Super Set.
- 11:48Over 60%. We're not the biggest but a lot of people think we've got the best picture.
- 11:56The Sylvania Super Set.
- 11:58Larry Costello, the Chicago Bulls and Denver's off and moving.
- 12:03Steve they hit five of the first six shots.
- 12:05That's firepower in the right places and when you only miss one and Chicago's two for ten.
- 12:09That'll give you a lead. They're ahead by seven, eight, ten to go and they're trying to apply some pressure into back court.
- 12:14Wilbur Holland who many people are reminded of Dick Barnett when they watch him play the little jumper the way he picks his legs up.
- 12:21He's a great opportunity player. You know if he could get down in a fast break situation anytime he can go to the basket he's going to be the first to go.
- 12:27He's going to get a chance to get to the line and get a hoop.
- 12:30Well Charlie Scott guarding a little too aggressively on that play. Picks up the foul. His first foul.
- 12:35First team foul against Denver and Holland will inbounds it from the near side.
- 12:40Well a problem here. You know we talk about a hand checking rule and Charlie Scott has his hands on him. He's not happy. It's not that much contact.
- 12:47Gilmore. Lansberger. This guy's a tough rebounder. That shot will count and he's been fouled. A chance for a three point play.
- 12:55Lansberger his first basket. You know this Lansberger this year had 15 offensive rebounds in one game. That's the top of the NBA.
- 13:02That's the top. You know that's way ahead of Moses Malone who's the offensive rebounding leader but this kid is down and deep and George McInnis is going to have to be cognizant of that and box him.
- 13:11He's got good offensive moves in close around the basket. That's where he tries to work.
- 13:15Foul picked up by McInnis. His first it's an 11 to 6 game. Denver. Three point play and now we have something away from the ball. Lee Jones says that Scott May reached in and grabbed.
- 13:26So he picks up the foul. That's his first. The third team foul now against Chicago.
- 13:30You talk about the hand checking rule and again it comes into play. No one's really hindering Thompson's progress but they don't want the players reaching and touching.
- 13:37Now they Scott look at that Lansberger get up with you the former Arizona State standout. Tom Toholland. Reggie Fias. Fias at 6'7". He's a handful for Thompson but he walks to the ball.
- 13:48Yeah he did a little bunny hop. He got away with it and then Lee Evans whistled him and he's a little surprised. Larry Costello he's hot about it but then he's got a lot of problems to be hot with.
- 13:58Chicago started rolling and then all of a sudden they fall back into the problems that plagued them early in the year.
- 14:04They just haven't had that consistency. Again is trying to get out of some difficulty. He doesn't do it.
- 14:13Off to Lansberger. The Fias. Rebound by Scott May and he can't get it down. Look at him. Horse awards. Lansberger gets it in.
- 14:22Anytime you get three opportunities you're going to get it down. Scott May who's missed two layups on timing problems has been there and it's important that they get as many opportunities as they can.
- 14:31Well after leading 11-4 it's been cut to 11-8 now. Issel trying to answer outside. Wilkerson. Good effort.
- 14:38Denver came right back with the same thing. You've got to box and either team is doing a good job of it early and it cost them hoops on second and third tries.
- 14:46Chicago historically has been tough on their front line rebounding wise but Denver that time getting the better of it. Here's Gilmore with Issel trying to hang in there with him.
- 14:55He likes that move and he's got it. He's got a chance for a three point play. Well an interesting thing about this matchup is normally they try to give Issel some help.
- 15:03Gilmore is just as dominant in that offense as Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. You'll see he works down and deep and once he gets down in there and leans in there's not much that a smaller than Issel can do.
- 15:13He's on the line with the chance to get a three point play and bring Chicago within two points. That's the first foul on Issel and Issel comes away with it.
- 15:21Earlier this year Gilmore had thirty one points and eleven rebounds and a game played right here in the Nichols Arena. He's out to maybe duplicate that this afternoon.
- 15:31Lansberger. The interesting thing about Gilmore is he outscored every center that he plays against. Here's Theus. Well this guy's going to be around a long time isn't he?
- 15:41Oh he's one fine prospect and all he can do is continue to get better. He sees the court well. He scores good. Hover Holland and to Gilmore they're going to get the big guy and why not?
- 15:53Oh that'll hurt you right there. That'll hurt more than your pride when you get down and deep like that and get mugged that way.
- 15:58All of a sudden we have a one point game. Thirteen to twelve. Denver on top. Remember they led eleven four. Here's Issel a little pushing there as they set up the pick. David Thompson a mismatch.
- 16:11Thompson's going to take him inside. He got away with it and he's fouled. A lot of three point plays here in the early going.
- 16:19Well we talked earlier about David Thompson adjusting to the guard position. That time he recognized right away he had a mismatch. Went on Gilmore and went right to the hoop. He got him a two point play and a chance to get three and build a lead up to a four point lead.
- 16:33Reggie Theus picked up the foul and already Thompson has seven points in the game. For Theus his first foul. Sixteen twelve. Denver. Inside again. He tried to front him on that play. Gilmore can't handle it. Boy Larry is really upset. I think he feels they were reaching in on Artis a little.
- 16:53Well they made a fine pass inside and Gilmore looked like he had an easy stuff and all of a sudden the ball was free and you always look for some help from the officials in that case.
- 17:03We have five twenty to go first period. Thompson hit one from there earlier. Rebound. Holland. They're getting only one track at it now. Holland on a break. He loves to run. How's that for a play?
- 17:13That's a fine offensive break that time. He was looking at the hoop and they came to him. He drew the defense and gave to Scott May. He gets his first hoop. Chicago's hanging tough. And we're going to have a timeout called by Denver. They don't like how things are happening right now.
- 17:26Sixteen fourteen. Denver with the lead at five oh one as Chicago's got boring right back at this one.

- 18:39Agent Brent Whitlock talks about family insurance.
- 18:42You have an obligation to that individual when he buys an insurance policy from you to back up what you tell him. You're selling him a service. It's an intangible.
- 18:51The only way you can prove that you're you're worth what you say you are or your company is as good as you say it is is to be there when he needs you and provide the service that he deserves.
- 19:10All the stars will come out for CBS Sports exclusive live coverage of the NBA All-Star Game from Detroit with the best in the East taking on the best in the West. You'll say.
- 19:24You saw it on CBS Sports.
- 19:29Larry Brown is fifth year as a coach of Denver. It's not been an easy year for him.
- 19:33He's been up and down normally off to a quick start. His teams and they have played with a lot of consistency and this year they have been up and down.
- 19:40He's trying to figure out what the problem is so they could get back in first place a place that he's made or a company to be.
- 19:46Denver looked like they were off and running. All of a sudden Chicago's battle back within two as we pick up the action just inside five minutes to go.
- 19:53First period.
- 19:54David Thompson.
- 19:56Well, he hit so didn't even ripple the court. You know, it's tough try there. He's got nine points and they're going to go back to what got him that lead Thompson scoring nine for him.
- 20:05Eight for Gilmore. The leading scorer thus far in the early going to this game.
- 20:09Scott a tough defensive man at six six against six seven.
- 20:12Theas Landsberger.
- 20:16Sixteen seconds on the shot clock as Theas trying to rotate around and that's a tough shot off balance couldn't get it. He had enough time to get that ball up but he forced one. Well, that's one thing about rookies.
- 20:26You got to learn where the shot is. Scott goes down the lane and he gives it away.
- 20:30Oh, did that get rejected?
- 20:32Artist Gilmore comes in here tenth in the NBA and block shots. And there's Holland and Holland. Boy, he just loves to run at every opportunity. He's trying to get down.
- 20:41He's always got his nose on that hoop. He's looking for a chance to score with him in the line of Chicago seem to be trying to run a little bit more Gary and they've been getting more points out.
- 20:49Eighteen sixteen. They've been outscored what now? Fourteen to two.
- 20:53They have really put a good run together. They've allowed Denver only one shot and they got another break.
- 20:59Holland sets it up. Landsberger a lot of missed shots inside, but it's going to be Chicago's basketball. Let's go back and watch Gilmore.
- 21:06Lock that shot inside. This is always nice to have a big guy standing around to spot those flies. He fools Scott. Scott fools him right there, but this one can't get up high enough or quick enough.
- 21:15And Gilmore puts it right back down.
- 21:18George McGinnis comes in. Also Robert Smith is checked in along with Kim Hughes. Three changes now for Larry Brown's team.
- 21:25Gilmore. Hughes blocks it. Nice play by Kim Hughes. They called him the Spider-Man.
- 21:30That was an excellent block by Hughes. Gilmore thought he had a lot more time to put the top on that one. McGinnis shows him how much time you need.
- 21:36George McGinnis with four points. Twenty sixteen now. As all of a sudden Denver's in trouble. They start to straighten themselves out a little bit.
- 21:45Robert Smith. There's a guy that kind of grows on you. The more you watch him play out of Nevada, Las Vegas. Only five eleven.
- 21:52Scott May picked up by Tom Boswell who's checked in and I think.
- 21:57They had that time too much on the ball. They couldn't handle that one. Well they had a lot of defensive pressure.
- 22:01He made a tough pass inside and Wilbur Holland just was surprised and not ready to handle it.
- 22:05So Denver gets to handle the ball. They got a chance to increase their lead with three minutes left in the first period.
- 22:10That against Denver is their third turnover. Tom Boswell. What a find he's been this year after coming from Boston.
- 22:16McGinnis changed the shot. And an offensive foul on McGinnis. McGinnis has had foul trouble all year long.
- 22:23Has already picked up his second. He told Landsberger. No you don't get this block big guy. You'll see him working here.
- 22:29He's going to go up. He commits himself a little soon. Landsberger is right there. He just takes that big left arm and rips him away.
- 22:35McGinnis has fouled out at twelve games this year and the team has lost eleven of them.
- 22:40Here's Wilbur Holland into Gilmore against Kim Hughes. He faked him up and he got the foul.
- 22:46That's the tough thing about Gilmore. You go up with him trying to anticipate and he'll make you pay for it.
- 22:51The worst problem is you let him get down and deep and once he gets in there you know you're in a lot of trouble.
- 22:56So you've got to try and commit a little bit early. He leaves his feet.
- 22:59The important thing about Gilmore is in watching him this first couple of years in the NBA he was not as confident.
- 23:05Very confident. Castello is yelling at Lee Evans. He wants more calls down and deep.
- 23:10But Gilmore was not as confident as he is now offensively. He feels as though he can score on anybody.
- 23:15He works to get that position. He wants the ball down and deep.
- 23:18Gilmore now with nine points. Nine of the Bulls. Now I should say ten of the Bulls. Eighteen points.
- 23:24Two point lead for Denver.
- 23:26Artis Gilmore has been very, very consistent this year as he's been in his entire career in the NBA.
- 23:33Here's Tom Boswell. Well he's found a home here hasn't he?
- 23:36Well there's no question. They got a big fine in Boswell.
- 23:39Boston had turned him loose and didn't know that he was as good a player as he is.
- 23:44He's gotten a chance to play on a different coach and a different style of play.
- 23:47McGennis hustling back. Able to break up what looked like might be an easy two inside.
- 23:51It's John Menngelt. Will now check into the guard spot.
- 23:55And Ritchie Theus will come out.
- 23:57The thing that Denver would like to do is get Chicago down and keep them down.
- 24:02But they have not been able to do so. Bobby Wilkerson is going to check in and Charlie Scott takes a blow.
- 24:07So we're going to have Wilkerson operating into the guard spot this time.
- 24:11Wilkerson, Smith, McGennis, Kim Hughes and Tom Boswell. That's the five in the game now for Denver.
- 24:17Two minutes to go. First period. McGennis.
- 24:20George McGennis coming in here eighth in the NBA and scoring.
- 24:23He is tenth in steals and ninth in rebounding. Not too bad.
- 24:27A great all-around player and since he's left Philadelphia he's been able to show people that George McGennis is not dead.
- 24:32There they go inside again. But that's not going to count.
- 24:36We got a pushing off foul that time.
- 24:39Gilmore is going to make sure that there was no one to hold him and encumber him as he went in.
- 24:44And he pushed off with that right arm and knocked Kim Hughes back about five steps.
- 24:48That's the first foul on Gilmore. John Brown getting ready to come in for Chicago.
- 24:52Boswell had a good game earlier this year against Chicago with 12 points, 14 rebounds.
- 24:58Here's McGennis trying to get it outside and it's going to be Denver's ball.
- 25:02Also Ollie Johnson comes in. So two new forwards.
- 25:05John Brown, Ollie Johnson, Artis Gilmore and Scott May will come out.
- 25:09You know May has got to have a problem with conditioning. He hasn't played all that much.
- 25:13He has not played much but he's a hard-working guy.
- 25:16Most of the guys from Indiana keep themselves in pretty good shape.
- 25:18He has just got to get his game, get himself in game shape.
- 25:22And they didn't get it off. The shot clock runs out.
- 25:25McGennis couldn't get the ball inside and that's the fourth turnover against Denver.
- 25:3022-18 the Nuggets.
- 25:33Denver an impressive win here Friday night.
- 25:36Breaking a three-game losing streak. They defeated the Los Angeles Lakers.
- 25:41Holland to John Brown. Brown who a week ago today got a starting call against Cleveland.
- 25:46Here's Mengyelder playing with a bad knee. Strain ligaments in that right knee.
- 25:50Holland with Robert Smith on him. And look at McGennis box off.
- 25:55Again that's a dimension that Denver has not had.
- 25:58A big strong guy to go up and get that rebound when you need it.
- 26:01Again a sprain with the two fouls. Kim Hughes picked up from the New Jersey Nets as a free agent.
- 26:07Kim does a very good job within his limits. And look at that a left-hander shooting a right-handed hook.
- 26:12Well he stays in his limitations and that time he had a mismatch on Robert Smith.
- 26:16He could have just rolled inside and stuffed it and he elected that right-hand hook and got it down.
- 26:20Kim's been very popular here in the Mile High City.
- 26:2324-18 Landsberger with McGennis on him. Mengyel wide open. Rebound by as well.
- 26:30Look at Smith go. From the running Rebels in the battle of Las Vegas. He's at home in that situation.
- 26:36Oswell tries to bottle and Landsberger, a real workhorse, comes away with it.
- 26:40Landsberger done an excellent job on the board at both ends for Chicago.
- 26:43Limiting them to one shot, getting the offensive rebound and keeping them close.
- 26:47They're going for the last shot now this first period as we have 10 seconds remaining in the first period.
- 26:53Seven seconds. Mengyel was six seconds. He got this one.
- 26:57And they worked that play to perfection. Used all the time. Denver's not even going to get a chance to get the ball up.
- 27:02So the Denver Nuggets who got off very quickly in this game on an 11-4 lead have a four-point lead after the first period of play.
- 27:11Chicago, who's won the first two meetings this year, giving them all they want.
- 27:16The first thing you notice about the Bic shaver is that the handle is hollow, practically worthless.
- 27:28Bic put the money into their top quality bonded stainless steel blade.
- 27:33That's why Bic can charge only 19 and three-quarters cents a shaver.
- 27:38And each one gives you days and days of close, comfortable shaves.
- 27:43The Bic shaver, hollow handle, superior blade, incredible price.

- 28:25And I'm a long way from NBA action.
- 28:28Here in Africa, like a lot of places around the world, the Peace Corps is alive and well, helping people in need.
- 28:35People went out of their way to help me when I was a kid.
- 28:38That's what the Peace Corps is asking you to do.
- 28:41Help someone and you'll help yourself.
- 28:45Join the Peace Corps.
- 28:47This message is brought to you by the Ad Council in cooperation with the NBA.
- 28:56Well, in that first period of play, it was Artis Gilmore for Chicago, scoring half their points, 10 of the 20,
- 29:02after it looked like Denver might be running off and hiding somewhere.
- 29:05They got off to an excellent start and Chicago came right back, went down into their strength,
- 29:09and Gilmore delivered. They need to stay close in the ball game.
- 29:12During that time out, Larry Costello spent a lot of time diagramming their 3A off their one set.
- 29:18We'll see how good their offensive execution is.
- 29:20What does that all mean?
- 29:22That means score a basket.
- 29:2424-20s, we pick up the second period. You saw Gilmore on the bench getting a breather.
- 29:29We have Mingale, Holland, Landsberger, Brown, and Olley Johnson in the lineup.
- 29:33And Hughes trying that right-handed hook again that he hit earlier.
- 29:36Here comes Holland. Charles Dudley getting ready to come in for the bulls.
- 29:40Mingale, one for two from the field in that first period.
- 29:44Olley Johnson, out to John Brown, who they picked up from the Atlanta Hawks for number two draft pick in 1980.
- 29:49Mingale, a tough guy. Boy, he got that one kicked out of the...
- 29:53Two on two. Anthony Roberts, number 21 in the lineup now.
- 29:57He's the guy battling back from some virus trouble where he lost 25 pounds.
- 30:01John Mingale on that last offensive series, he was going to get that up.
- 30:05That was his play no matter what. Kim Hughes just smothered him.
- 30:09Chicago's going to work again.
- 30:11He never saw the basket. Holland with Hughes on him, a little mismatch, and now they reset it.
- 30:16David Thompson picking up Holland.
- 30:18Olley Johnson inside the Landsberger working on Hughes.
- 30:22Follow-away. Anthony Roberts has got it.
- 30:25Boy, you can tell Roberts lost some weight. He's down on weight, isn't he?
- 30:28He's been down, he's been coming back, he played his best offensive game, actually all-around game against Los Angeles.
- 30:33All the Nuggets played well. They were happy to see him come back.
- 30:36Robert Smith was doing the same thing on Friday night.
- 30:39Smith, you know, didn't hit his first three, but he's got confidence.
- 30:42He came back and he popped that one in for his first two points.
- 30:4526-20. The Nuggets by six.
- 30:49John Brown with Tom Boswell on him.
- 30:51Wilbur Holland, that little jumper of his.
- 30:54Intimidation that time from Smith, it was on him tough.
- 30:56Chicago seemed to have struggled. They bogged down.
- 30:59They tried to come down with the set offense, and they've not gotten the same type of effort with Gilmore out of the lineup.
- 31:03When they run, they seem to get easier hoops.
- 31:06You know, Gilmore almost averages 42 minutes a game, so he's not going to be out of there very long.
- 31:10Here's Boswell, Landsberger on him.
- 31:13Smith and Holland, six foot against six, five-eleven.
- 31:17Two seconds on the shot clock, and Hughes got it.
- 31:19Boy, he knew the time remaining. He wasted no time.
- 31:22Well, the crowd was yelling, and the only thing he could do was respond. He got a low pass, but he got a high jump.
- 31:28Kim Hughes, this second bucket, 28-20.
- 31:33Mengelt, they're not getting the ball inside, and the reason, number 53's out of there.
- 31:37Here's Hughes again, and he's taken over in the absence of Gilmore.
- 31:40Boy, he has done an excellent job of rebounding again, giving the Nuggets a chance to get down and get the opportunity shot.
- 31:46Oli Johnson with the steal. Mengelt doesn't see the ball, and it's off of Mengelt.
- 31:50Fine, heads up play by Kim Hughes, who was able to bat it off of him.
- 31:54Charles Dudley now checks in for Chicago.
- 31:58Leaving will be Wover Holland, so Mengelt and Dudley will be in the backcourt.
- 32:02The thing that Larry Costello should be aware of is that his team is losing a little bit of the momentum.
- 32:06Certainly, I'm sure he's going to make some changes to try to get that right.
- 32:10If they had it going and staying in the close ball game, they have not scored since the top of the period.
- 32:14Chicago losing on Friday night against San Diego, and there's David Thompson.
- 32:18You didn't hear from him for a while, but he's come back now. He has 11 points for the afternoon.
- 32:23And all of a sudden, Denver has jumped up to a 10-point lead.
- 32:27They lead it 30 to 20 with 916 to go before halftime.
- 32:32A reflex concern, Larry Costello.
- 32:40We offer this $100 bill to anyone who's stronger than Eastman 910 adhesive.
- 32:44Just a drop of Eastman 910 here and here.
- 32:47Pull it apart, and the money's yours.
- 32:49There. It's only been one minute.
- 32:54Whoa!
- 32:55Oh, oh! Come on, no! Help!
- 32:57No!
- 32:59For the really tough jobs around your house, put your money on Eastman 910 adhesive.

- 34:01Tough and economical for you.
- 34:03Chevy Trucks. Built to stay tough.
- 34:06Hi. Sunday.
- 34:08I play a mother with a deaf son.
- 34:11Watch at Your Name is Jonah, the Sunday Night Movie Special at 9, 8 Central and Mountain.
- 34:20Denver with a 10-point lead, and Chicago has the big guy back in there under Skillmore.
- 34:24Without him in there, their offense just wasn't hitting on all cylinders.
- 34:27They certainly bogged down, and when they got to the end of the game,
- 34:30they had no place to really get a hoop.
- 34:33Now he's got Gilmore back in, and they come right back in to him.
- 34:36He goes to work.
- 34:38And Artis Gilmore already has 10 points in the game this foul.
- 34:42It's going to be Kim Hughes picking up the personal foul, and that's his second.
- 34:46Red and butter, that's what they always say.
- 34:48Go to it, and he gets it right down in here, and he knows where the hoop is,
- 34:51and he knows he's got a strong advantage over Kim Hughes.
- 34:54He just overpowers him.
- 34:56He has two shots coming.
- 34:58Artis Gilmore, I'll tell you, for a big guy, he shoots very well from the line, 76%.
- 35:03He is the number one field goal shooter in the NBA, with 59% coming into the day.
- 35:09Well, Gary, I think all the big guys now realize that you get cheap points
- 35:13with no one guarding you at the free throw line.
- 35:15They're taking a little bit more time to shoot those free throws a little bit better.
- 35:18Gilmore, pressured by Olly, or I should say Thompson pressured by Olly Johnson.
- 35:22Here it comes to Dudley.
- 35:24Dudley, out of Golden State.
- 35:26Not much of a scorer, but he's been able to contribute as far as quarterbacking this basketball team.
- 35:32Again, notice the difference when Chicago has the ball and Gilmore in the game.
- 35:35They try to push the ball up the floor.
- 35:37Look out, and Gilmore is hammered as he goes up.
- 35:40Hammered by Kim Hughes, and Hughes now with three personal,
- 35:44and they have caught a finger in the eye on that one.
- 35:46Dan Issel and Charlie Scott are coming in now.
- 35:49Well, a lot of bodies underneath, and Gilmore gets that rebound off of Landsberger.
- 35:53He keeps it alive, and again, Hughes doing the only thing he can.
- 35:56Comes right over the top. You see the hand go across the face there.
- 35:59Gilmore is down. I'm certain that he's all right.
- 36:02He's taking another breather.
- 36:04Well, we're looking forward to seeing this guy in the All-Star Game.
- 36:07A week from today, February 4th, the NBA All-Star Game from the Silver Dome and Pontiac,
- 36:13and of course, McInnis and David Thompson will be starting in that game.
- 36:16They're going to be their big guy, and it should be a good one.
- 36:18We'll have an interesting matchup because Artis Gilmore is an excellent rebounding center.
- 36:22And he's going to go against the Vest in the business against Moses Malone.
- 36:26And we'll see when they get in the basketball game just how they play inside.
- 36:30Clear out. It's their territory, right?
- 36:32Dan Issel, 44, in, along with Charlie Scott, who checked back in for the Denver Nuggets,
- 36:38who lead it 30 to 22, 30 to 23.
- 36:41Well, with Gilmore going as well as he is, I'm not sure that Dan Issel would like to come back
- 36:45and take some of that abuse.
- 36:47The big guy is really overpowering people down in D.
- 36:49Thirteen points for Artis Gilmore. Anthony Roberts, their second first-round draft pick last year
- 36:56and a very good player. Thompson, it will not count.
- 36:59He's been fouled by Dudley, but before the shot.
- 37:02Dudley, he can't believe it, and he's got to have a conversation about it,
- 37:05but he was right there again. You know, you talk about that hand-checking rule,
- 37:08and sometimes the players just don't realize when they have their hands on the other guy,
- 37:12and the whistle is blown, and it's disbelief. There's no play at all.
- 37:16And Charlie Scott has backed into Mingale. He's picked up a personal foul, and Scott now with two.
- 37:24A problem for Charlie Scott, playing excellent basketball, and you'll see Mingale, he takes a little bit of a dive,
- 37:29but Scott has not been able to stay in the ball game a lot because he has had foul problem.
- 37:33That's been the story with McGinnis, and they've lost a lot of close ones with the big guys out of the lineup.
- 37:38Gilmore, tough shot. Anthony Roberts goes up for it.
- 37:41Anthony Roberts was out six weeks with that virus, had his best game Friday night,
- 37:45coming in against Los Angeles. Here's Issel. Out it comes to Thompson.
- 37:50Nice play by Thompson. He faked him out of there beautifully.
- 37:53That's one of the few times you see David Thompson give a head fake and a ball fake,
- 37:56and he got him off his feet, got an easy hoop.
- 37:58It looked like the Nuggets had wasted a lot of good penetration for nothing,
- 38:01and they still come away with the hoop.
- 38:0332-23, Theus is getting ready to come back in again for Chicago.
- 38:07Olly Johnson into Gilmore. They tried to front him, and they got away with it.
- 38:10Well, that time he didn't have the ball. He had excellent position.
- 38:13Unfortunately for Denver, he deflected the ball out of bounds.
- 38:16Larry Costello is going to change his lineup. Dudley comes out,
- 38:21and Scott May comes back in.
- 38:24Scott May in. That's the sixth turnover against Chicago,
- 38:26and they've been up among the leaders in that department all year long.
- 38:30Scott Thompson, Issel, Anthony Roberts, and George McGinnis for Denver at this stage of the game
- 38:36at the 726 mark of the second period at halftime.
- 38:40Have an interview with Kevin Lockery of the New Jersey Nets as McGinnis horses one in.
- 38:45Boy, is he strong.
- 38:46Well, the important thing about having that kind of strength is also having control,
- 38:50and he was off balance but strong enough to get the ball to the hoop and get the basket.
- 38:54Eight points for McGinnis. Lansberger, the basket will count,
- 38:58and we have a foul coming up against Charlie Scott.
- 39:01I think Scott maybe thought he was running, too.
- 39:04Well, you know, one of those times when a guy wants to stay in the red,
- 39:07Charlie Scott right there, but not quite there. Lansberger leaves his feet.
- 39:10If Charlie Scott moved over just a little bit more and not bailed out,
- 39:14he probably would have gotten the call to go his way.
- 39:17Tom Boswell, 41, checks in. Bobby Wilkerson will check back in.
- 39:21Charlie Scott with three personal fouls. Both he and Hughes have three,
- 39:24so Scott will leave at this stage.
- 39:26Again, see, that's a problem that Charlie Scott has had.
- 39:28It's not that he's not played excellent basketball.
- 39:30It's just time out on the floor, and you can't do anything from the bench, Gary.
- 39:34There's Lansberger, completes a three-point play, and it's 34-26.
- 39:38Lansberger now with seven points.
- 39:41This game has kind of a flavor that they had the first time they met here.
- 39:45Denver dominated and had the lead, but they could not really big enough lead
- 39:48and bury them, and Chicago came back in the second half.
- 39:51See, Fiasso's long arms reaching in. Wilkerson, well, he's getting the shooting slump,
- 39:55but that ought to help his confidence a little bit.
- 39:57Oh, anytime you can feather him from out there, you know you're going to put up
- 40:00a couple more balls, and we'll see what happens,
- 40:02but he's a player that really tries hard, he works real hard.
- 40:05Good things will happen for him because he puts a lot of effort out there.
- 40:08Ten-point lead, Scott May, tough shot, rebound, Issel.
- 40:11Issel off to Boswell.
- 40:14Boswell will hold it up.
- 40:16The McGuinness, George inside, rejected by Gilmore.
- 40:20That strength against strength there.
- 40:23Wilkerson again.
- 40:24You can't bring that cheap stuff in there, so they go to the outside,
- 40:27and Bobby Wilkerson, he delivers.
- 40:29You go in there and they test you, don't they?
- 40:32They trick you.
- 40:33What they do is they turn their back, make you think it's open,
- 40:35and all of a sudden they turn around and knock it away.
- 40:3738-26, six minutes to go.
- 40:40What a move by Reggie Fiasso.
- 40:43That's a little Houdini.
- 40:45Now you see it, now you don't.
- 40:47Just little flashes like that, it gets you excited about this young rookie.
- 40:52He is big at 6'7", and he can move inside.
- 40:56Here's McGuinness out to Issel.
- 40:58Here's Gilmore, and he's got an off-balance shot.
- 41:00You know, Issel's had a tough time finding his role on this team.
- 41:03Well, he struggled, you know, basically he's an outside player
- 41:06for most of the big centers.
- 41:07Chicago double dribbles and blows an excellent offensive opportunity.
- 41:14So we have the ball turned over by Chicago.
- 41:16Let's look again at Fiasso's move.
- 41:18A little magic right there.
- 41:19He showed Bobby Wilkerson the baseline and spun away clean,
- 41:22and Chicago has a 10-point disadvantage.
- 41:26Owens Corning would like to help you understand insulation R values.
- 41:30R stands for resistance to heat flow.
- 41:32It's the right way to measure insulating power, not thickness.
- 41:35Look, it takes about 18 feet of stone to give you an R value of R-19,
- 41:40but only 15 inches of wood and 6 inches of this Owens Corning fiberglass insulation.
- 41:46So check for R value.
- 41:48The higher the R value, the greater the insulating power.

- 43:00Next Sunday, mark this down on your sports calendar.
- 43:03The NBA All-Star Game from the Silver Dome and Pontiac.
- 43:06Three players here this afternoon will be checking in there.
- 43:09Artist Gilmore along with George McInnes and David Thompson.
- 43:12The Dr. Julius Irving will be matching up against his former teammate McInnes in that game.
- 43:16Firepower, that's what we'll have at that All-Star Game.
- 43:18And it really should be exciting.
- 43:20East against the West, 1.45 next Sunday.
- 43:23Ten point lead now for Denver.
- 43:25Five and a half minutes to go before intermission.
- 43:27Dan Issel to Wilkerson.
- 43:29Broken up nicely and Issel very alertly picks it up.
- 43:34Dan Issel got that basket that time before.
- 43:36He tried to get Gilmore off his feet and didn't get it.
- 43:39Threw the ball up and Chicago got it back and wasted it.
- 43:41And he got it off his feet this time and he scored.
- 43:44Issel averaging 16 and a half after last year.
- 43:46Averaging a little over 21.
- 43:48Nice play by Theus, but you saw McInnes get up there.
- 43:51It's going to be Chicago's ball, but again, Theus showing great agility in there.
- 43:55Did a good job of boxing down and deep and we had heard during the timeout,
- 44:00Larry Brown saying give help on defense and that time McInnes does so and they stop Theus' effort.
- 44:05Look at that.
- 44:06Oh, I tell you, he stretched that arm up and just kept going.
- 44:09It wouldn't go for him though.
- 44:1040-28.
- 44:12McInnes down quickly.
- 44:13One thing about George, for a big man, he really gets down the floor in a hurry.
- 44:16Well, he has amazing foot speed and quickness and that's what you don't realize about him.
- 44:20He runs like a small forward.
- 44:22Tommy Boswell does a good job of working down and deep right there.
- 44:26And you wonder sometimes why Boston let him go.
- 44:28May has his hands all over him, squeezes right down the lane between a bunch of folks, gets it off the glass.
- 44:34They're going to call that foul on Wilbur Holland.
- 44:36That's his first, second team foul now against Chicago.
- 44:39Boswell at the line.
- 44:42There he is.
- 44:43He played kind of a role in Boston.
- 44:45And he's an all-around player and he's coming here and they let him play an all-around style of game.
- 44:49His role was an oxygen breaker.
- 44:51He just came in and gave people a blow.
- 44:54All right.
- 44:55Well, it was a role anyway.
- 44:57Here's Reggie Theus, off to Wilbur Holland.
- 45:00Artis Gilmore back to Holland.
- 45:02Nice set up that time by Artis.
- 45:04That's one thing that makes them very tough with Holland in the game.
- 45:07He shoots the ball well from the outside and when they can go inside and bring it back out,
- 45:11they flatten the defense out and they get a good shot.
- 45:14Thirteen-point lead now for Denver.
- 45:16Issel from the side.
- 45:18For a big guy, he can shoot with anybody.
- 45:20Well, you know, if they say advantage, Issel, and when his advantage is having Gilmore on the perimeter shooting the ball there.
- 45:26Gilmore almost missed that play.
- 45:28Holland said, let's settle down a little bit now.
- 45:30And it goes to the big guy.
- 45:34That's a funny shot.
- 45:36It changed it halfway up.
- 45:37Well, I think you realize he was a little bit further out in his hooking range.
- 45:41He does not have that sky hook like Kareem Abdul-Jabbar.
- 45:44Consequently, he doesn't have that automatic confidence about it.
- 45:47He wheels around.
- 45:48He likes to face Tabasco a little bit more.
- 45:50Well, he had a loose ball foul on Scott Mayer.
- 45:52Robert Smith, number five, will come in.
- 45:54So Wilkerson and Smith will be the backcourt tandem as we have McGuinness.
- 45:59And Boswell evidently shaken up.
- 46:00We have a twenty-second injury timeout for him.
- 46:03Issel and McGuinness, the other two now in the lineup for Denver.
- 46:06It's been a tough physical game, but when you have Gilmore inside,
- 46:09you can't stay out of that realm because everybody's boxing in on him,
- 46:13trying to reach in on him.
- 46:14He's so strong and overpowering, you have to give help,
- 46:17and that's where the physicality comes in to play.
- 46:20Gilmore is an overpowering type of player, and no one individual in this league can handle him.
- 46:26They need Chamberlain to come back, and he was thinking about going to Chicago.
- 46:29That's right.
- 46:30Lee Jones spots a reaching-in foul that time.
- 46:33That's Gilmore.
- 46:35And Gilmore's second personal foul.
- 46:38Gilmore, though, will stay out of foul trouble.
- 46:40Normally he does not foul out of many basketball games.
- 46:43His problem here is with Issel, who goes to the perimeter well,
- 46:46and he gives a little fake from the outside and goes by him.
- 46:49So he'll have to be cognizant of that.
- 46:51Three forty-six to go before halftime.
- 46:53And halftime, Kevin Lockery, a guy who's had a few technical fouls call on him this year.
- 46:58The New Jersey Nets call it for coach.
- 47:00And there is Bobby Wilkerson on a give-and-go.
- 47:03Nine points for Wilkerson.
- 47:04Denver has really got good offensive execution going.
- 47:07They bogged down earlier, but they've got it back.
- 47:09Chicago is going to have to bounce back, and they're coming right back inside to Gilmore.
- 47:13Gilmore at that time didn't want to get it off.
- 47:15Scott May.
- 47:16Wait a minute.
- 47:17Who's got it?
- 47:18Robert Smith.
- 47:19Well, I guess he didn't travel with it.
- 47:22And the crowd here wasn't sure.
- 47:24Well, the Nuggets are doing an excellent job on defense by sending three men to Gilmore.
- 47:29Here comes Theus.
- 47:32Seventeen-point lead for Denver.
- 47:34Chicago kind of out of their offense right now.
- 47:36Well, they seem to be passing up the open man.
- 47:38That time Scott May was open.
- 47:39He elected to give it to Holland.
- 47:41Look at that move by McEnnis, would you?
- 47:43To Wilkerson.
- 47:44I tell you, when McEnnis gets loose like that, you just got to get out of the area.
- 47:47Fast break opportunities.
- 47:49And when you get players with those kinds of capabilities running loose, you're going to have all kinds of fouls.
- 47:54He went inside, made an excellent move, brought the defense to him,
- 47:57and he dishes off into a wide-open Bobby Wilkerson, and they get the basket.
- 48:02Again, McEnnis working hard, pulls the defense to him, and there's nobody by Bobby Wilkerson.
- 48:07You can't make those. You can't play.
- 48:12This is it.

- 49:27No.
- 49:28Is foamy, thick and rich enough to support this skydiver?

- 49:34But if you want a clean, close shave, it's more than thick and rich enough.
- 49:44Next Saturday on the New Look CBS Sports Spectacular, take a look at this.
- 49:48The Pro-Ice Spectacular with gold medalists Peggy Fleming and John Curry.
- 49:54Plus the fight of the week.
- 49:56From Hawaii, men's World Team Surfing Championship. Plus live coverage of the start of the 24 hours of Daytona.
- 50:04You'll say you saw it on CBS Sports.
- 50:10Denver with a 19 point lead. Chicago trying to regroup forces. They bring John Brown into the forward. He has the ball now.
- 50:17Brown with a mismatch. Smith on him.
- 50:20Mathias into Gilmore. They go back to the guy that's carried him all the way and that shot just won't go for him.
- 50:27Here they come on the run. Three, four on one.
- 50:30And Wilkerson to Issel and nice play.
- 50:33Well they nearly didn't get it because they couldn't get the ball in the middle. They had three guys on one side and Holland could almost zone up on them.
- 50:39But they do get the basket as Wilkerson goes all the way in.
- 50:41You talk about Gilmore, they're giving two and three guys on him, but Chicago has no movement anyplace else.
- 50:47There's Holland open. That was a fine pass. Heads up by Theus. That's what you said earlier. He sees the floor so well.
- 50:53Theus sees the ball and the court. He gives it to the people that are open. Now Chicago must put the ball in from the perimeter to loosen it up inside so Gilmore can go back to work again.
- 51:0351-32. A minute 51 till halftime. Issel in and he's charged.
- 51:09He picks up the foul running into Wilbur Holland.
- 51:12At halftime, Rod Hundley will visit with New Jersey Nets coach Kevin Lockery.
- 51:18Well you see right there, Gilmore giving away to Issel who had gone by so he doesn't get the foul.
- 51:24Holland doing the thing the coaches always talk about, giving help even the big guys need help.
- 51:28As the second foul on Issel, another turnover. Chicago playing with the turnovers. Here's Robert Smith.
- 51:35And Denver right now is off and moving.
- 51:38Well they're blowing them away right now and it's because Chicago is struggling offensively. They've come in and they've said offense is broken down.
- 51:45They're not getting easy offensive opportunities and the Denver Nuggets are applying good pressure in the middle and they come up with another steal and an easy hoop.
- 51:54Tom Moswell. That is a tenth turnover in this game against Chicago.
- 51:59All of a sudden when it looked like Chicago was going so well and going to get back in that basketball game, they broke down. They've only had a couple of hoops.
- 52:09And they've gone exclusively to Gilmore right here.
- 52:12Holland's the only guy that's been scoring and he hits again from the side.
- 52:15At the one quarter mark it was a four point game and all of a sudden it's 55-34.
- 52:21McGinnis on the move.
- 52:22The thing that's obvious to me, Steve, is that Denver's tempo is so much quicker. Chicago can't seem to pick up their tempo and compensate.
- 52:29Well, Chicago only really has one style of play and that's basically to come down and set up and that hurts them very much.
- 52:35The Nuggets, on the other hand, can run the set offense and they also can run off the break.
- 52:40Now they've been fortunate to get the easy opportunities and they've cast in on them.
- 52:45Chicago, when they made their changes in the substitution, they seem to have broken their rhythm and they have not gotten back to the offensive firepower that they had early in the basketball game.
- 52:56McGinnis has been dominant in this period and Thompson has been sitting on the bench.
- 53:00McGinnis converts both of them. That last foul on Landsberger, his first, and it's 57-34.
- 53:06McGinnis in this game has 10 points, 13 for Thompson, 8 for Issel, 11 Wilkerson. So good, balanced scoring by the Denver Nuggets.
- 53:14Wilbur Hollins trying to hit three in a row.
- 53:16Landsberger comes away with it. He has 13 rebounds in this game.
- 53:20And a little push and a shove and who's this one on?
- 53:24It's Kim Hughes. He has four fouls.
- 53:27Kim Hughes is real active and he's trying to get the ball and he does an excellent job of blocking this shot right here.
- 53:33You see he gets them off the feet. Hughes goes up, gets the piece of the ball, then Gilmore comes in, he comes over Gilmore's back.
- 53:39Chicago has the ball out, but they need a lot more plays like that. Kim Hughes takes a break, McGinnis takes a break, and David Thompson is back in the basketball game.
- 53:4830 seconds left in this period.
- 53:50And also Anthony Roberts checks in. As you said, 30 seconds left before halftime.
- 53:54Here's Landsberger forcing one in and that's not a bad move.
- 53:58He's real nice around the basket and he tries to get in that red area and anytime he can get down in there, he's got an excellent chance of getting the ball in.
- 54:05Chicago having to play some catch-up basketball.
- 54:08That's the worst kind of play.
- 54:10Boy, it is, particularly when the big guy's being boxed in and guarded inside like he is.
- 54:16Gilmore comes away, but Anthony Roberts with the steal.
- 54:19Three seconds left.
- 54:21Gilmore trying to keep it away and he does.
- 54:23And so the first half comes to a close here at McNichols Arena.
- 54:28As the Denver Nuggets, after moving off very quickly to an 11-4 lead, had a four-point lead after the first period and now 57-36.
- 54:37And half time.
- 55:07Kicking up!
- 55:08America is turning seven up!
- 55:13Gee, Mr. Goodrench, I don't know. It's going...
- 55:15Kathump. Kathump. Kathump. Kathump. Kathump. Kathump. Kathump.
- 55:19Yeah.
- 55:20Mr. Goodrench understands your GM car.
- 55:23He has special GM training and GM equipment available to help him analyze your car and diagnose the problem.
- 55:29No more Kathump. Thanks.
- 55:31Keep that great GM feeling
- 55:35Mr. Goodrench?
- 55:36With genuine GM parts.
- 55:40I understand.
- 56:10This has one push leaning.
- 56:13Because of a certain ability I possess, I've been asked to tell you all the useful shopping information you can find in the Bell System Yellow Pages.
- 56:20Names, addresses, phone numbers, maps, directions, credit cards, items for sale, charge accounts, deferred payment plans, brand names, regular valet parking, custom work, machine work, quantity discounts, colors, days and hours of business, insurance, bonding, deliveries, endorsements, cash and carry, 24-hour service, estimates, illustrations, years in business, same day...
- 56:32When you need to know who, what, where, when, and why,
- 56:37let your fingers do the walking through the Bell System Yellow Pages.
- 56:41Thank you.
- 56:52Basketball is everyone's game.
- 56:55Short folks, tall folks,
- 56:57girl folks,
- 56:58boy folks,
- 56:59young folks,
- 57:00all folks.
- 57:02Basketball is everyone's game.
- 57:09Basketball, it's your game.
- 57:15The Denver Nuggets with a 57-36 lead.
- 57:19Well, Kevin Lockery of the New Jersey Nets has always been a very vocal guy.
- 57:23Rod Hunley visited with him.
- 57:29I'm Rod Hunley and last week on the beautiful campus of Princeton University at Princeton, New Jersey,
- 57:34I was able to corner one of the most controversial coaches in the NBA,
- 57:38Kevin Lockery of the New Jersey Nets.
- 57:43Oh, no, no, technical. Oh, Rod.
- 57:45Oh, this is a cost.
- 57:46Hey, no fine, no technicals.
- 57:48I've been down at Piscataway, New Jersey looking for you.
- 57:51They'd send me over to Meadowlands. I go over there, there's a big hole in the ground.
- 57:54They said go over to Princeton University. Here I am.
- 57:56Were you trying to hide from people?
- 57:57Well, we haven't been playing too well and when we're not playing well,
- 57:59we move around trying to get a victory, change the pace.
- 58:01Come on, let's go ahead and talk.
- 58:02Okay, come on in.
- 58:04I want to talk to you about the referees.
- 58:06Okay.
- 58:07One of your favorites.
- 58:08All right.
- 58:10Well, Kevin has been since 1963, last time we played against each other.
- 58:13This is the first chance we've had to sit down and talk about basketball.
- 58:16The game has changed, in particular, the referee.
- 58:18And you lead the league in technical fouls.
- 58:21I've led the league the last couple of seasons in technical fouls.
- 58:24I think, Rod, when we played, there was less players and less officials.
- 58:28And we became friendly with the officials and not nearly as many technicals.
- 58:32It's a changing game and I think if we were more friendly together,
- 58:35the officials and the coaching would be less technical.
- 58:37How about now you've got three referees instead of two?
- 58:39That's one more guy that's got a shot at you.
- 58:41Well, the chances are 33% better now that I get a technical in a basketball game.
- 58:46All right, the referee has just hit you with the second technical foul.
- 58:49You know you're out of the building. Your wife's sitting up in the stands.
- 58:51How does she react to all this?
- 58:53Well, she reacts all right now, but the first time she'd see me coach,
- 58:56she couldn't believe it because off the floor and away from the game,
- 58:59I'm a little low-key compared to the way I work.
- 59:02And she was extremely surprised when she saw the way I work the basketball game.
- 59:07But she's used to it by now.
- 59:09And I bet in particular when she sees a new dress you like to have,
- 59:12and there goes that money out the window.
- 59:14Who pays these fans? You pay them?
- 59:16Well, unfortunately, for our club, they pay them.
- 59:19Hey, you have two sons, Kevin Jr. and Steven. They both play basketball.
- 59:23How do they react to their dad getting technical fouls?
- 59:25The one thing I tell them is make sure you never get a technical foul
- 59:28because if they start getting technicals, people will think they're like the old man.
- 59:33So I tell them, make sure you stay off your faces when you're playing.
- 59:36How about basketball in New Jersey? It's got to be a little frustrating.
- 59:40You win the ABA. You win the ABA championship.
- 59:43You had the good doctor, Julius Irving. You win 55 games.
- 59:46Then the next year they merge. You come in in the NBA.
- 59:49And your first year you won 22 and lost 60. It's got to be a little frustrating.
- 59:52It really is because we've seen what the other teams on the ABA,
- 59:55particularly San Antonio and Denver, has done.
- 59:58And we were able to beat them for two out of three championships in the ABA.
- 1:00:02If we could have came over with our ball club intact,
- 1:00:05I really honestly believe now from being in the league three years
- 1:00:08that we had a chance to win it all in the NBA also.
- 1:00:10Well, you played 11 years in the NBA, Kevin.
- 1:00:12You scored over 10,000 career points and never played in an NBA All-Star game.
- 1:00:16Well, someone said that I scored 10,000 points, but the guys I would guard
- 1:00:20and scored 11,000. So I guess that's the reason I didn't make the All-Star.
- 1:00:24The fans vote on it now. In those days when you played, it was the sports writers.
- 1:00:27You like that better?
- 1:00:28I'm all for the fans voting on it, even though there'll be some discrepancies.
- 1:00:32Some players, some teams will load up their ballot boxes.
- 1:00:35But I believe the fans pays the tariff for this league.
- 1:00:39It's an entertainment business and any time you got them sharing in a situation in the league,
- 1:00:44I think it's good for basketball.
- 1:00:45Well, Kevin, you guys have pretty much weathered the storm.
- 1:00:48You started as the New York Nets in the ABA, changed to the New York Nets in the NBA,
- 1:00:53and then moved to New Jersey, still the Nets, and playing in a lot of different places.
- 1:00:57First the Coliseum, and then you moved into Pitchcaddyway, New Jersey,
- 1:01:01and now a chance to move into one of the most beautiful complexes in the world,
- 1:01:05and that's going to be at Meadowland.
- 1:01:07Well, I think we've got a chance, Hot Rod, to soon we keep continuing on
- 1:01:11and become a successful basketball team on the floor,
- 1:01:14which we've improved with the 500 level with a chance for the playoff now.
- 1:01:18When we get into the new building in Meadowland, I think it has a chance to be
- 1:01:22not only one of the best franchises in basketball and most successful, but in all of sports.
- 1:01:26Hey, Kevin, is that a world championship NBA ring?
- 1:01:29It's not an NBA ring, Hot Rod. It's the last ABA championship ring.
- 1:01:33When we were in the ABA, we beat Denver, which is a fine ball club.
- 1:01:37We had Dr. J, Rich Jones at the forward, Kim Hughes, Brian Taylor, and John Williamson at the guards.
- 1:01:43Several other great players, and I seen you last week on the halftime with Kevin Grieve on CBS Halftime.
- 1:01:49You're trying to get his ring. There's no way you got his. There's no way you're getting mine.
- 1:01:52The only way you ever get a ring, Hot Rod, is to make a comeback.
- 1:01:55Fat chance I got.
- 1:01:57This is the first of eight consecutive games on this road trip, so good luck to you.
- 1:02:01You gotta be a good boy. No technicals, huh?
- 1:02:03I will, Hot Rod. Thank you very much.
- 1:02:07It's halftime. The Denver Nuggets with an 11-point lead over the Chicago Bulls.
- 1:02:11The NBA on CBS will continue after this word from your local station.
- 1:02:16He's at his fighting best.
- 1:02:19John Wayne stars as Big Jake on the CBS Tuesday Night Movies at 9, 8 Central and Mountain.
- 1:02:26This is CBS.
- 1:02:36At the conclusion of today's game in each of our NBA telecast during the season, we'll be selecting the Chevrolet, most valuable player of the game.
- 1:02:44In conjunction with this award, Chevrolet will present a check for $1,000 to the General Scholarship Fund of the Players College or University.
- 1:02:52Any student may be eligible to benefit from these scholarship funds, and today's winner will be announced at the end of this telecast.
- 1:02:58Steve Jones, you and I will be voting for the MVP, and should we disagree, our producer Bill Barnes will cast the deciding vote.
- 1:03:06So in this first half of play, it's been the Denver Nuggets rolling very well.
- 1:03:10They've been paced in scoring by David Thompson's 13, Wilkerson has added 11, George McGinnis 10, Issel with 8 points.
- 1:03:20The Andy Williams San Diego Open is underway again today.
- 1:03:24Yesterday, Fuzzy Zeller had a two-stroke lead. For an update, let's go to Ben Scully.
- 1:03:33Yesterday, we had to go off the air before showing you Bill Cratchit's 18th hole.
- 1:03:38He had hit his second shot into the gallery, had taken a drop, finally chipped onto the green and three, and so he had this putt for Birdie.
- 1:03:46He was two under at the time.
- 1:03:48He got his birdie at 18 to go to three under par and join Billy Casper and Gil Morgan at three under, three shots back of the tournament leader Fuzzy Zeller.
- 1:03:59Yesterday, the weather was magnificent. We probably sold a lot of real estate in Southern California.
- 1:04:04Today, they might be giving it back. We have a 30-mile-an-hour wind, a definite threat of rain, so Fuzzy Zeller's two-stroke lead is very much up in the wind,
- 1:04:14chased by Jerry McGee at four under, then the trio, Casper Morgan and Cratchit at three, and Lee Trevino lurking in the weeds, four shot back at two under par.
- 1:04:24That's it as we await the final round of the Andy Williams San Diego Open.
- 1:04:28Now, this is Ben Scully in La Jolla. Back to NBA basketball.
- 1:04:35Welcome back to McNichols Arena, the home of the Denver Nuggets, who at halftime have an 11-point lead over the Chicago Bulls.
- 1:04:42As in this first half of play, very fine shooting by the Denver Nuggets. They are shooting almost 58% from the field.
- 1:04:51On the other hand, Chicago has not been hitting that well for the field. They're shooting just under 33%.
- 1:04:58The turnover department, 11 turnovers for Chicago in this first half of play, as opposed to eight for the Denver Nuggets.
- 1:05:06Rebounding wise, surprisingly too, is that Denver is out rebounding the Chicago Bulls at halftime 28-23.
- 1:05:14So it's been a very fine first half for the Denver Nuggets. We have one, two, three men in double figures in this first half of play.
- 1:05:22They've been able to go to the bench and maintain that advantage. On the other hand, the Chicago Bulls have gotten an outstanding performance from Artis Gilmore with a total of 13 points.
- 1:05:32He's followed by Landsberger, who's played well. He has a total of nine points and 13 rebounds.
- 1:05:37All right, let's join Steve Jones. He's with David Thompson.
- 1:05:41I'm here with David Thompson and everybody's all-league all-star.
- 1:05:45David, Friday night you had an excellent basketball game. You seem to be much more under control. Your offense is a little bit easier for you.
- 1:05:54Today you have 13 points. You seem to be going pretty good. What do you think the reasoning for that?
- 1:05:59Well, I get more into the flow of the game and I'm taking the ball a little more myself.
- 1:06:06I'm going a little more individual, taking the ball to the basket.
- 1:06:10Anytime my outside shot is on, it seems to help my overall game. And that's really been the key. I've been shooting the ball a lot better from outside.
- 1:06:18You think you've finally adjusted to playing the outside position playing guard.
- 1:06:22I know that you're a lot more comfortable when you can catch the ball instead of having to bring it up to court. You think you've finally adjusted to playing outside.
- 1:06:29Yeah, I'm getting used to it. I'm getting better more and more with more experience.
- 1:06:35Basically, my game is 15 feet and on end, but now I'm working on my outside game, handling the ball a little more and just getting a better feel of the overall game.
- 1:06:44All right, David, we want to thank you. We'll be looking forward to seeing you at the all-star game. Have a good second half.
- 1:06:48Thank you, Steve.
- 1:06:49Thank you, gentlemen. 57-36. That's our halftime score. The Denver Nuggets on top.
- 1:06:56We're going to be back with the start of the second half in just a moment.
- 1:07:26Jason, bad guys is not so glamorous outside of the movies.
- 1:07:40You find you spend a lot of time on stakeouts eating cold pizza and you'd rather be someplace else having a cold beer.
- 1:07:46For me, that'd be one of these white beer from Miller. Just in case I got to move fast.
- 1:07:51See, lights got a 30 less calories than a regular beer and it's less filling and it tastes just great. Ain't that right, Mugsy?
- 1:07:59Like beer from Miller, everything you always wanted in a beer and less.
- 1:08:05A family is about to lose its home forever. Not the home on the left. All state homeowners insurance can pay to rebuild that house.
- 1:08:12The real disaster is on the right. The owner died before the mortgage was paid.
- 1:08:17All state life has mortgage protection insurance to help give your family a debt-free home if you die.
- 1:08:23You need mortgage protection insurance, too. So your family won't lose its home.
- 1:08:27See your Allstate agent for both kinds of insurance. Make sure your home lives on. You're in good hands with Allstate.
- 1:08:37Come along, R2. You can't have whooping cough. Droid's don't get dangerous diseases like whooping cough or measles.
- 1:08:44But children do and they can get very sick, even die.
- 1:08:49R2, let me tell them. Parents of Earth, childhood diseases can be prevented. Call your doctor or local health department.
- 1:08:58Immunize your children, please. And may the force be with you.
- 1:09:07The preceding announcement was brought to you as a public service by the National Basketball Association.
- 1:09:16The NBA on CBS is sponsored by Hertz, the superstar in rent-a-car.
- 1:09:22The Miller Brewing Company, brewers of Miller Highlight. If you've got the time, we've got the beer.
- 1:09:27And by Chevrolet and Chevrolet dealers coast to coast.
- 1:09:3814,165 on hand for this one. And Steve, we talked about the stats a little bit earlier.
- 1:09:45Shooting-wise, Denver has really gotten the better of that.
- 1:09:48Well, the shots come from the types of shots. They're 58 percent because they're getting shots that the players can make.
- 1:09:53They get an easy opportunity shot coming without a lot of defensive pressure on there.
- 1:09:57And consequently, they're shooting 58 in Chicago, only 33.
- 1:10:00At a 21-point lead now for the Denver Nuggets. Charlie Scott off to Issel.
- 1:10:05He is in there along with McGinnis, Bobby Wilkerson, and David Thompson.
- 1:10:09The same five that started this game. Scott, a tough shot.
- 1:10:13Mickey Johnson is back in there for Chicago. He didn't see a lot of playing time.
- 1:10:16And an easy two for Wilbur Holland. So Holland, Theus, Mickey Johnson, Mark Landsberger played very well in the first day.
- 1:10:22And Artis Gilmore opened the second half for Larry Costello.
- 1:10:26Bobby Wilkerson down the middle. And what a game he is having. He has 13 points.
- 1:10:31Well, Mickey Johnson is looking all the way over at the bench wondering who was supposed to give him help.
- 1:10:35But that time he got screened. Wilkerson came down the lane and there were three red shirts in there.
- 1:10:39Got to have a little bit better communication.
- 1:10:41There's Theus showing a move. Landsberger inside again. And he has a bundle of rebound, but he can't get it to go.
- 1:10:47Bundle of rebound and no points to show for it.
- 1:10:50Landsberger had 14 rebounds in that first half. Broken up. It will be Denver's basketball.
- 1:10:56A fine offensive rebound to Landsberger, but he's got to be able to finish it off.
- 1:11:00It's like being able to close a deal.
- 1:11:03So now Wilkerson wide open McGinnis. They rubbed off Landsberger, but they didn't get the basket.
- 1:11:08Issel, to David Thompson. And that will be off of Thompson, Chicago's basketball.
- 1:11:14Well, when you're down by 21 and a half, what do you tell your team? Just kind of chip away at it?
- 1:11:20Well, you tell them we would like to be within a 10-point range, 10-12-point range at the start of the fourth quarter.
- 1:11:25They always say, boys, we can't get it all back at once, so let's take one basket at a time, have good offensive execution, play a little bit better defense.
- 1:11:32Make them shoot the ball from the perimeter. Let us get the layup.
- 1:11:35Landsberger that time. He shot that one up high, didn't he?
- 1:11:39Good rebound and a follow shot. It is 59 to 40.
- 1:11:43The thing the Bulls have been able to do at the start of this quarter is get two and three tries at the hoop, and if you can do that, you've always got a chance.
- 1:11:50David Thompson pulling up with one.
- 1:11:53And it's saved by Bobby Wilkerson.
- 1:11:56McGinnis, George McGinnis, he loves that shot. McGinnis now with 12 points.
- 1:12:02The thing that the Chicago Bulls must concentrate on doing is making the Denver Nuggets now come down and set up every time
- 1:12:08and try and make them put that ball up from the outside with some defensive pressure on them.
- 1:12:12Mickey Johnson can't get it to go. Here comes David Thompson.
- 1:12:16In that first half, Johnson didn't even score. He picked up two quick fouls.
- 1:12:20Wilkerson from the corner.
- 1:12:22Thompson, they're getting a follow, multiple shots, and they're getting the baskets.
- 1:12:26And that's going to get Larry Costello off his feet. He's going to have a talk. He's going to say,
- 1:12:30fellow, you didn't understand a word I said at halftime. We'll have to do the same thing all over again.
- 1:12:35So they've fallen behind two more. They trail by 21 and a half.
- 1:12:39It's now 63 to 40, 940 second period.
- 1:13:02Sometimes it seems the whole world is burning and you don't think it'll ever go out.
- 1:13:07But sooner or later, the fire does die. And it isn't the water and axes that do it.
- 1:13:13It's you and a handful of tired men.
- 1:13:17Now comes Miller time. Time to finally head for the best tasting beer you can find.
- 1:13:24Miller High Life, America's quality beer since 1855.

- 1:14:18From the author of Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid comes Mr. Horn.
- 1:14:22His story is more than just another Western.
- 1:14:24David Carradine and Richard Widmark star in Mr. Horn.
- 1:14:3123 point lead for Denver.
- 1:14:32And Otse Castello was upset during that timeout.
- 1:14:35He said, you didn't listen to what I said in halftime.
- 1:14:37They come right back. They put the top on that one.
- 1:14:39He was telling them basically in that timeout, fellas, it starts right here with us.
- 1:14:44We've got to each play our own man and play some individual defense.
- 1:14:47He went down a lot.
- 1:14:48It's a good 7-2, 6-10, and 6-8.
- 1:14:50We're not getting any rebounds.
- 1:14:52True, they had a guy like David Thompson, 6-3, taking it right over the top,
- 1:14:56doing it all offensively and getting offensive rebounds, and that certainly hurts him.
- 1:15:00Boy, boy, can he get up in the air.
- 1:15:02Every time I see him, I just can't get over him.
- 1:15:0465-42.
- 1:15:06David Thompson scoring his 17th point.
- 1:15:12Control is so important in the basketball game.
- 1:15:15You'll see Thompson here completely under control, goes up.
- 1:15:18Gilmore tries to come over.
- 1:15:19It's Mickey Johnson trying to come over, but he's there too late.
- 1:15:24Chicago turning that ball over for the 12th time.
- 1:15:29Got a foul. Looks like it's Mickey Johnson.
- 1:15:32Look at Phoenix and Boston leading Golden State.
- 1:15:36The Warriors have some problems right now.
- 1:15:37Well, the Warriors are struggling.
- 1:15:38A lot of teams seem to be struggling today.
- 1:15:40Visiting teams are having a tough time coming away with any kind of thing.
- 1:15:45Carly Scott removing the ball around.
- 1:15:47They're getting more and more cracks at it.
- 1:15:49You can't win basketball games like that, and Costello's deciding so.
- 1:15:52Here's Landsberger now with 17 rebounds in this game.
- 1:15:56Mickey Johnson playing with three fouls.
- 1:15:59That's a tough one.
- 1:16:00He got away with it, though.
- 1:16:01He got away with it.
- 1:16:02Mickey Johnson needs to get himself involved in the basketball game offensively,
- 1:16:06and then everything else for him seems to pick up.
- 1:16:08It should be the other way around, but in his case,
- 1:16:11he needs to see a few balls go down before he plays a pretty good defense.
- 1:16:14Little push in inside there, Landsberger and McGuinness.
- 1:16:17It's Landsberger who picks up the foul.
- 1:16:19Landsberger and McGuinness, both physical players, and that time,
- 1:16:22Landsberger decided he was a member of the Chicago Bears and not the Bulls.
- 1:16:27Landsberger's big enough, isn't he? 6'8", 225.
- 1:16:31He's got to weigh more than 225.
- 1:16:33He's got to be closer to 235.
- 1:16:35Thompson out to Scott.
- 1:16:37Long shot.
- 1:16:39And look at that.
- 1:16:40Three men on the boards that time.
- 1:16:41Well, they're now responding.
- 1:16:42They're making the ball come up from the perimeter.
- 1:16:44They tried to get the ball into Thompson.
- 1:16:46He had to give it up on the double team.
- 1:16:48They made the good offensive play, and Chicago cut him off with one shot.
- 1:16:52Eight minutes to go, third period, 65-44, Denver.
- 1:16:56They have seven seconds on the shot clock.
- 1:16:59Gilmore, that left hand won't go.
- 1:17:03Scott with Holland, shoulder to shoulder.
- 1:17:07Block by Gilmore.
- 1:17:08Beautiful block that time by Gilmore.
- 1:17:10Back they come, three on two, Holland all the way.
- 1:17:13Landsberger again is there, but it won't go for him.
- 1:17:17That was 18th rebound for Landsberger.
- 1:17:20They missed some follow shots.
- 1:17:23The other hand, George McInnis, Wilterson.
- 1:17:26They're going to reset it.
- 1:17:28McInnis, broken up.
- 1:17:29Mickey Johnson reached in and got it away from him.
- 1:17:32Here comes Theus.
- 1:17:33Watch this.
- 1:17:34They finally get a hoop.
- 1:17:36They went a little rat race basketball back and forth with a few turnovers and no control.
- 1:17:40Chicago finally gets a little hoop there, a little encouragement from Larry Costello, but they had a good, positive effort.
- 1:17:46Landsberger following on Drake.
- 1:17:48They didn't get it.
- 1:17:49They came back, played some good defense, and got a basket.
- 1:17:52For the first time, they made it with a run in this game and come away with a better score.
- 1:17:56There's a charging situation.
- 1:17:58Bobby Wilterson.
- 1:18:00All you need is a good little defensive effort.
- 1:18:02Again, Mickey Johnson getting there.
- 1:18:04It didn't look like he was completely covering that baseline.
- 1:18:06It looked like Wilterson had head and shoulders by, but they get the call.
- 1:18:10They need a few breaks, and again, 6.52 left in the game.
- 1:18:13They can still get within 10.
- 1:18:1565-46, Holland off to Landsberger.
- 1:18:20Reggie Pias, Scott on in.
- 1:18:24Mickey Johnson with seven seconds on the shot clock.
- 1:18:27He didn't get anything with that one.
- 1:18:29Well, that's healthy basketball by Mickey Johnson.
- 1:18:32Charlie Scott, Gilmore, and reaching over is David Thompson, and he committed the foul.
- 1:18:38Boy, it's getting pretty physical right now.
- 1:18:41It's pretty physical out there, but you see, Toc Choc got cut in and tried to take it over.
- 1:18:46Mickey Johnson does not get it.
- 1:18:48Gilmore's down and deep, and the smaller David Thompson tries to come over his back.
- 1:18:52No chance, and Charlie Scott is going to have some words about that.
- 1:18:56From the top man right down to the bottom man, he just passes right down the line.
- 1:19:05Everybody pushes for quality.
- 1:19:07Willie Rawls, utility man.
- 1:19:09This is who we are and what we do at General Motors.
- 1:19:12My job is to replace any absentees.
- 1:19:16I'm here and there all over the plant.
- 1:19:19You're not tied down to one job all the time.
- 1:19:22You're around different jobs, metal finishing, welding, soldering.
- 1:19:28But I think I enjoy soldering more than any other job I've done because there's a lot of skill in that.
- 1:19:35The fellas keep something going all the time.
- 1:19:38It's never dull around there.
- 1:19:40They all get along very good.
- 1:19:42The union's good.
- 1:19:44They're on the line. They have a lot of interest in the car.
- 1:19:47If I go out to buy a car, that's where I'd go, looking for General Motors' car.
- 1:19:51Because I'm right there in the plant and I see how they're built, you know, see the quality that goes into them.
- 1:19:56General Motors, people building transportation to serve people.
- 1:20:02Do unrelated gas prices give me fits?
- 1:20:05No way, buddy, because I got me a diesel-equipped Chevy pickup.
- 1:20:08No spark plugs, no carburetor, no distributor.
- 1:20:13And great EPA mileage estimates, too.
- 1:20:16Plus, diesel fuel traditionally costs less than unleaded gasoline.
- 1:20:22The diesel-powered Chevy pickup, a lot of miles per gallon and a lot less cost per gallon.
- 1:20:28Chevy trucks, built to stay tough.
- 1:20:32In with the basket mark.
- 1:20:35Larry Costello seeing maybe the earmarks of a comeback here.
- 1:20:40According to his troops, he's seen much better effort the last four or five minutes of this game.
- 1:20:45Positive effort. The guys are beginning to play a little bit better defensively.
- 1:20:49Even though Mickey Johnson took a little selfish offensive try the last time down,
- 1:20:53they are getting better offensive opportunities, and that's what he's asking of his team.
- 1:20:57Just chip away plenty of time in the ball game.
- 1:21:00Denver's going to give us a chance to put the ball in the air.
- 1:21:03Scott May has checked into the lineup. Here comes Lansberger.
- 1:21:05He has 18 rebounds, 23 is his career high.
- 1:21:08All in hits it. All of a sudden.
- 1:21:10That's the way they diagrammed it. We looked in just before they started.
- 1:21:15So, Chicago's not dead in this one yet. 65-48.
- 1:21:19Again, it's off to Issel.
- 1:21:21Issel out to Thompson with Scott May coming out on him.
- 1:21:26Scott May picking up the foul.
- 1:21:28Scott getting up a little slowly, and I know everyone's concerned every time he goes down
- 1:21:32because of all the problems he's had with the knee.
- 1:21:35He bounced around a little bit, but he didn't move his feet. He had his body there,
- 1:21:38but his feet were still tangled up. That's the reason he's rolling around on his back on the baseline.
- 1:21:43That's three fouls now on Scott May.
- 1:21:4565-48. Again, it dribbles it off his foot.
- 1:21:49And the scramble is on, and thereafter.
- 1:21:52Thompson.
- 1:21:54Oh, what a play by David Thompson. Fast and furious activity.
- 1:21:58While we talk about controlling against Chicago, they did not have the ball.
- 1:22:01Everybody tried to break and run away from it.
- 1:22:04Scott May scrambling all over. Thompson comes in, shows Gilmore his body,
- 1:22:09and then takes the ball away from him and puts it in.
- 1:22:1167-48. The intensity picking up.
- 1:22:14Theus, the Landsberger. Tough shot. He can't get it.
- 1:22:18Again, it's just barrels in there, intercepted by Holland.
- 1:22:23Wilbur Holland all the way, and Wilbur Holland now has given him a shot in the arm offensively.
- 1:22:28He has 14 points.
- 1:22:29Well, Wilbur Holland knows where the basket is, and he's going to keep looking at it,
- 1:22:32which is important. They need someone to continue to score.
- 1:22:35They've cut into the lead a little bit, and again, they've got to play good defense,
- 1:22:38make the ball come up from out there, and try and get down and get some easy opportunities.
- 1:22:42Well, they've cut it to 17 after trailing by 21-1.5.
- 1:22:45Scott May cuts it by two more.
- 1:22:48And as I said before, the earmarks of the comeback are shaping up now for Chicago.
- 1:22:53It's interesting how defense can bring you back in the game, Steve.
- 1:22:56Well, it's not so much defense. I think it's your offense that kind of keys the combination of the two.
- 1:23:00And if you get good baskets, your defense seems to pick up.
- 1:23:04There's Thompson, tough shot, but he got it again, and David Thompson with 21 points.
- 1:23:09Control, I keep saying control, and he's playing under control.
- 1:23:12He's doing anything offensively he wants. They're going to have to give him some help.
- 1:23:17Inside, four and a half minutes to go, third period.
- 1:23:20Fiat to Scott May, into Landsberger.
- 1:23:23Landsberger taking McGinnis in to Scott May, and he's hit two in a row.
- 1:23:28Scott May with that great shot. It's almost a picturesque shot.
- 1:23:32He's got a classic outside jump shot. He just is not in very good game shape again,
- 1:23:36not having the chance to put the ball in the air too many times.
- 1:23:39But again, Chicago's gotten better ball movement, and their defense has picked up because of it.
- 1:23:43Scott May with six points on Bobby Wilkerson. Wilkerson, difficult shot at best.
- 1:23:48Landsberger with yet another rebound. That's 19 for him.
- 1:23:51Up to Holland. Wilbur Holland pulls it up.
- 1:23:56Denver thought they were going to get away with this one easily.
- 1:23:59I think they know now they're in a basketball game.
- 1:24:01Chicago is playing tough.
- 1:24:03This is the same thing that happened the last time they played.
- 1:24:06Scott May all of a sudden got himself a couple of hoops, and he's got his nose on the basket.
- 1:24:10He comes with three baskets in a row and a chance to get a three-point play.
- 1:24:14And Larry Brown, as we see him again working in deep, is going to have to call a timeout
- 1:24:18to have some type of discussion about their defensive effort.
- 1:24:21Scott May now with eight points picking up the foul. Wilkerson, his second.
- 1:24:26We'll be back. This game's really getting tough.
- 1:24:30You're feeling good about yourself. You're feeling good about yourself, and it shows.
- 1:24:52Yeah, you're drinking diet Pepsi. Yeah, you're drinking diet Pepsi, and it shows.
- 1:25:05In business, the more efficiently you use your time, the more money you make.
- 1:25:11Time is money.
- 1:25:13So if you're spending hours dictating letters to far-off places, and hours are spent typing them...
- 1:25:20I've got other work to do.
- 1:25:23...kick the letter habit, pick up your phone, and give them a ring.
- 1:25:28The phone turns your time into money.
- 1:25:34Uh-oh, that TV show we want to watch goes on in five minutes.

- 1:26:20February 10th and 11th.
- 1:26:22From first serve to match point, you'll say...
- 1:26:26You saw it on CBS Sports.
- 1:26:31One of the best X's and O's men in the business, Larry Costello,
- 1:26:34he diagrams a play for his team and tries to get them set defensively.
- 1:26:38They have been doing a lot of talking, been very animated in that huddle over there,
- 1:26:42trying to get back in this basketball game.
- 1:26:44They've been very positive, and the key for them is movement, good effort.
- 1:26:48Scott May now trying to complete a three-point play, and as you see,
- 1:26:51he's made it 69-57, three and a half minutes to go, third period.
- 1:26:56Chicago's come back into this game, battling from a 21-point deficit at halftime.
- 1:27:02Robert Smith out to Anthony Roberts.
- 1:27:04They're moving the ball now. You can see the ball movement that they were lacking earlier.
- 1:27:08Here's Roberts.
- 1:27:10Gilmore with Boswell, and he rejects it, and it is tough in there.
- 1:27:14Boswell reaching over Scott May.
- 1:27:17Oh, boy.
- 1:27:19Well, I tell you, you know, Boswell does an excellent job to get that rebound,
- 1:27:22and then he forgot about that big skyscraper sitting in there.
- 1:27:25You'll see he goes up, gets the rebound.
- 1:27:27Gilmore gets himself right, he gets the ball again.
- 1:27:29Boswell's upset because he can't handle it and comes over Scott May's back.
- 1:27:33Chicago's working, trying to get to that 10-point deficit.
- 1:27:36First foul on Boswell. We approach the three-minute mark now, this third period.
- 1:27:4069-57, Wilbur Holland.
- 1:27:42At time, Boswell reached in and broke it up.
- 1:27:45Here comes Smith.
- 1:27:47Smith broken up by Theus. Theus with the long arms, and we've got him right on top of us now.
- 1:27:52It's going to be Chicago's basketball.
- 1:27:55I didn't know you were that quick, big guy.
- 1:27:57They started to come over, so you bailed out.
- 1:27:59I tell you what, that's perseverance.
- 1:28:02And here is a quick basket and a chance for a three-point play as Landsberger got down behind him
- 1:28:08while they were arguing on the play.
- 1:28:10Cruz controlled the Denver Nuggets, and Larry Brown looks on, saying,
- 1:28:13fellas, we've got to wake up and play basketball out here. They're starting to come back.
- 1:28:17He's a predator call on the officials, but the team has gone to sleep.
- 1:28:20They've allowed Chicago to get within 10 with 2.52 left.
- 1:28:24We got us a ball game, Gary.
- 1:28:26Yes, we do, and Landsberger, who has just played remarkable basketball,
- 1:28:30has 15 points and 19 rebounds, and he's got another one.
- 1:28:34Landsberger off to Theus, and I thought that was a pretty wise play.
- 1:28:38He just brought it out. Let's go for one now.
- 1:28:40Let's get inside 10 points with this team.
- 1:28:42Under control, and if they continue to go like this,
- 1:28:45they're going to start to come back down inside to Gilmore,
- 1:28:48because they're getting the ball up from the perimeter and they're getting it down.
- 1:28:51Anthony Roberts comes away with a rebound.
- 1:28:53Ten-point difference in this game at the 2.31 mark.
- 1:28:56Third period.
- 1:28:58Brings it out to Smith.
- 1:29:00Tom Oswell.
- 1:29:02Oswell going to shoot outside.
- 1:29:05Tipped in beautifully by Anthony Roberts.
- 1:29:09Roberts with his first points of the game.
- 1:29:11Well, that's what he does so well for them.
- 1:29:13He's a good offensive rebounder as well as a perimeter shooter.
- 1:29:16They need that kind of effort. They went dead in the water.
- 1:29:19Chicago has been coming back and chipping away.
- 1:29:21And there's a way of chipping away at it.
- 1:29:23Artis Gilmore, Gilmore now with 15 points.
- 1:29:26He had ten of those though in the first half.
- 1:29:28They have gone away from him, but everyone else has gotten involved offensively.
- 1:29:32That's what they need to open it up for him again.
- 1:29:34It's down to ten points again.
- 1:29:36Anthony Roberts giving them a shot in the arm offensively.
- 1:29:39Back at you. That's what they call that in your face.
- 1:29:42And he scores another hoop, again giving them some kind of lift.
- 1:29:45Denver's beginning to pick up their defensive effort.
- 1:29:48A lot of pushing and chipping in there as both of them jockeying for position.
- 1:29:51Those two being May and Roberts. They're really going after each other.
- 1:29:54Roberts on Scott May. May turns around.
- 1:29:57Landsberger's there. It's 20 rebounds for him.
- 1:30:00Gilmore's got it. They're just forcing the ball.
- 1:30:03The basket I believe will count.
- 1:30:06And a chance for a three-point play coming up.
- 1:30:09That is just sheer strength inside.
- 1:30:11Well, when you've got strong guys like that, you see Landsberger very active.
- 1:30:15No one boxes him.
- 1:30:16Gilmore gets it. Arms all over him. He just rolls it up.
- 1:30:19Again, Ola Chamberlain taking bodies off the ground with him.
- 1:30:22He gets two. They're down by ten.
- 1:30:24One-twenty-two left.
- 1:30:26And Thompson is back in the game.
- 1:30:28But more important, Larry Costello is right in front of us.
- 1:30:31Tell him, fellas, we're doing all we can do. Let's just keep it going.
- 1:30:35At the line now goes Gilmore.
- 1:30:37Landsberger has 21 rebounds, two away from his career high.
- 1:30:41That's the official count on Mark Landsberger in the rebounding department.
- 1:30:45And there's your score, the closest they've been in a long time, by nine.
- 1:30:50Heavity three-64. Smith out to Issel. Issel bringing Gilmore out.
- 1:30:54What could Gilmore get back in for that rebound?
- 1:30:57Well, that rebound right there was Artis Gilmore's 10,000th of his career.
- 1:31:01That's right. He needed six coming in here today.
- 1:31:03He's got over 14,000 points in his career and now 10,000 rebounds.
- 1:31:07What a productive career he's had.
- 1:31:10Mengelt, throw it away.
- 1:31:11Intended for John Brown.
- 1:31:13John Brown and Mengelt checking into the lineup right now.
- 1:31:16And we're going to have a timeout by Denver.
- 1:31:19Denver asked for a timeout with 54 seconds left in this third period.
- 1:31:24As the Chicago Bulls, after trailing by 21 at halftime, have climbed within nine points in this game, 73-64.
- 1:31:33They've done it with just pick-up intensity.
- 1:31:36They've got quite a performance from Landsberger, Gilmore.
- 1:31:39And I thought maybe one of their real outstanding performances was a guy by the name of Theus,
- 1:31:44who came in and seemed to have control and had some ball movement.
- 1:31:47They've all played much better since they got blessed out in that timeout.
- 1:31:52Now we're going to take a look at Larry Brown's huddle and see if he can get his team offensively guarded, defensively riding.
- 1:31:58Vaz and David. Dan's coming up.
- 1:32:01Vaz, you pop. Don't pop until Dan receives the old post play.
- 1:32:05All right? Hey, don't pop until he receives it.
- 1:32:08Look, the second time down, we're just hitting Dan and he's going straight on the drive on Gilmore.
- 1:32:14All right? We're running them both times.
- 1:32:15That's it, David, with you low.
- 1:32:17Woozy, that means you've got to be aware of court balance, all right?
- 1:32:20We can't foul and can't give up second shots.
- 1:32:22And be aware of the clock, Robert, all right?
- 1:32:25We want to get it inside.
- 1:32:27Vaz, don't pop until Dan receives it.
- 1:32:30All right? Hey.
- 1:32:32All right, Steve, now what does he mean by not popping?
- 1:32:36Coming out to meet the ball, right?
- 1:32:37Don't come out. Don't break the play until we get everyone set in position.
- 1:32:41They want to get it down. And if they're going to try to go to Gilmore, they're going to try and pull him out.
- 1:32:44You see Larry Costello. He's working down at the other end.
- 1:32:47Again, diagramming both coaches, excellent coaches.
- 1:32:50And the thing that Larry Costello is trying to do is keep a positive effort for a team that's trying to come over the hill.
- 1:32:55Larry, Larry Brown is trying to keep them down.
- 1:32:57He's trying to emphasize the good things.
- 1:32:59Both coaches trying to keep their teams on a positive note.
- 1:33:03Well, we have a good one here, but a week from today, we're going to have a good one, too.
- 1:33:06The NBA All-Star Game from the Silver Dome and Pontiac.
- 1:33:10We sure enjoy this. 1-45 Eastern Time. A nine-point game.
- 1:33:15Chicago setting up defensively with Mendel and Fias at the guard's bite.
- 1:33:20Boswell brings it out to Robert Smith.
- 1:33:23Now they've got 40 seconds left now for the end of this third period.
- 1:33:26Thompson, he shot it with a man in his face and he got it.
- 1:33:30What a shot by Thompson. 23 points he's fouled by Fias.
- 1:33:34Well, that's just a great offensive play by Thompson.
- 1:33:37You'll see Fias right there in his face. The problem for Fias is he brought that hand down and got called for the play.
- 1:33:43Thompson has a chance for a three-point play. Doesn't get it in Gilmore rebound.
- 1:33:48I tell you, Thompson in this third period has made three very pressure-packed free throws, or I should say field goals.
- 1:33:54People hanging all over him.
- 1:33:55All his field goals have been tough tries.
- 1:33:57Chicago the last two times down, just when they seem to have got it going, have turned the ball over without a shot at the hoop, and that hurt.
- 1:34:05Now Kim Hughes is coming in for Dan Issel with 25 seconds left in this period.
- 1:34:10Hughes will check in with a total of four fouls.
- 1:34:16Smith, Thompson with Anthony Roberts, Kim Hughes, and Tom Boswell.
- 1:34:21They're going to go for the last shot now this period.
- 1:34:23Seventy-five, sixty-four. Watching the clock very closely.
- 1:34:29The thing that you want to do defensively is not let the team run their play, so you try to be disruptive.
- 1:34:33Run at the guy, make them do something they don't want to do, put the ball up quicker.
- 1:34:37With three seconds.
- 1:34:38Good, John Brown's got it, so they do not get the two points on the last play of this third period.
- 1:34:44What a third period we had. Twelve minutes of very intense basketball.
- 1:34:50The Denver Nuggets are at a 21-point lead at halftime, now having a battle for the lives.
- 1:34:55They lead it 75-64.
- 1:35:03Here's to good friends, tonight is kind of special.
- 1:35:08Hello, Cosley.
- 1:35:09Hiya, Dad.
- 1:35:10I heard a rumor you finally passed the bar exam.
- 1:35:12Yeah.
- 1:35:13Congratulations. Frank said...
- 1:35:14Frank will have the prime ribs and a couple of low and brown.
- 1:35:17Prime ribs? Low and brown? What are you doing?
- 1:35:20Buying dinner for the guy who put me through Boston.
- 1:35:22When you want the taste of a truly great American beer, tonight, let it be low and brown.
- 1:35:28Mr. Good Friends.
- 1:35:29Low and brown.
- 1:35:31Good Friends.
- 1:35:32The NBA on CBS will continue after this word from your local station.
- 1:35:37From the author of Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid comes Mr. Horn.
- 1:35:41His story is more than just another Western.
- 1:35:43David Carradine and Richard Widmark star in Mr. Horn.
- 1:35:47This is CBS.
- 1:36:17Good friends.
- 1:36:47Artis Gilmore today going over 10,000 rebounds in his career.
- 1:36:57Joining a select group of people, Chamberlain's Bellamese, Silas' Russells move over and make room for Big A.
- 1:37:05We start the fourth period. Be sure now and stay tuned for the MVP award at the conclusion of this game.
- 1:37:10We may have a tough time picking them. We have some people out there, the candidates.
- 1:37:14Mengyel rebound. Brown can't handle it.
- 1:37:17John Brown, good second ever to Gilmore and Kim Hughes has just picked up his fifth foul.
- 1:37:22Kim Hughes has had a tough time all day long and the problem that time is they played pretty good defense.
- 1:37:27Again, Chicago getting a good offensive effort on the board.
- 1:37:30Mark Lansberger comes back in.
- 1:37:32You'll see Brown go down and deep.
- 1:37:34Kim Hughes all over the back.
- 1:37:36No complaint. Lansberger back in the game.
- 1:37:39They have a problem. They've got Scott May coming out because Denver has two big strong guys in them.
- 1:37:45Boswell and McGinnis, they want a matchup.
- 1:37:48What a game Lansberger's having. He has 15 points and 21 rebounds.
- 1:37:52Gilmore looking back door.
- 1:37:54Have a troubling walk to the ball.
- 1:37:57Now Chicago, what is that? Three times straight I think down the floor. They haven't, they've turned it over.
- 1:38:02They got within nine and now they've had three turnovers and that's hurt them.
- 1:38:06They've had a good defensive effort, good offense to the outs for the Nuggets in the third period,
- 1:38:10but they've got to come back to that effort that they finished with.
- 1:38:13Boswell backing in on Lansberger. Robert Smith seeing a lot of action.
- 1:38:17Driving on Mingeld and who got the foul?
- 1:38:20It's Mingeld. He did not have position.
- 1:38:23And now Charlie Scott will be checking in.
- 1:38:27Robert Smith makes an excellent move right here.
- 1:38:29Mingeld never having his feet set and not had his body over there.
- 1:38:33Robert Smith should have tried to get that ball in there, maybe would have gotten a chance to shoot some free throws.
- 1:38:37And Smith comes out of the lineup for Scott. Thompson inside, 25 points.
- 1:38:43Any way you want it, he can get it done.
- 1:38:46And he has hit some shots in the second half. 77-64.
- 1:38:50Chicago is in nine and all of a sudden now Denver started to creep away again.
- 1:38:54Gilmore is going to bring it back by two though.
- 1:38:57He got a lot of help that time. He wanted to put it over the top and stuff it.
- 1:39:01McGinnis came over, had a lot of hands in the way so he had to take it off the glass.
- 1:39:04A tough drive but they got it.
- 1:39:06Gilmore with 20 points for the afternoon.
- 1:39:10Scott to David Thompson.
- 1:39:12Diaz staying on him.
- 1:39:14Diaz could probably match up with as well as anybody on David.
- 1:39:16But David hits it again and he's laying them on.
- 1:39:19The problem again is now Thompson is going inside and out and Diaz really doesn't know what he's going to do.
- 1:39:24Thompson is too great an offensive player so you've got to give him some help.
- 1:39:28You've got to make him work harder and you've got to really concede him 25 a game if you want to start the ball game.
- 1:39:33John Brown lost with the ball.
- 1:39:36And he doesn't like that development. That's a 16th turnover against Chicago.
- 1:39:40Look at that one. It got a little tighter didn't it?
- 1:39:42Well, Golden State is coming off the floor and they're also back in the basketball game.
- 1:39:4524 seconds to shoot. Anything can happen in this NBA so you've got to stay with it.
- 1:39:5079-66. This will often McGinnis.
- 1:39:53McGinnis on Landsberg.
- 1:39:55Another foul coming up. Who's it on?
- 1:39:58McGinnis really upset.
- 1:40:02It's going to be Landsberger committing the foul.
- 1:40:05Or McGinnis really upset about something.
- 1:40:07Well, I think McGinnis wants a hoop but he's coming right here and now he's got the ball up.
- 1:40:11He's saying he's in the way and Gilmore comes up and knocks the ball down.
- 1:40:17Landsberger committing the foul. That is his third.
- 1:40:22McGinnis still arguing and Charlie Scott yelling some encouragement.
- 1:40:26Charlie Dudley. I think he wanted goaltending on the play but what do you think?
- 1:40:30Well, it wasn't goaltending right there. Gilmore catches the ball. It wasn't on a downward flight.
- 1:40:36But George has been known to lobby for every point that he can get.
- 1:40:39Here's a guy that's on the line that's averaging 11 free throw attempts this year.
- 1:40:44More than anybody else in the NBA, he's just not been able to get a good percentage of the men.
- 1:40:49He's made like 376 of them, been there about 580 times.
- 1:40:53He's hit 67%. He leads an attempt and made free throws in the NBA.
- 1:40:59That's because he's so quick and big and gets inside and you get in trouble when he does that.
- 1:41:04He also has the green light.
- 1:41:06Here's Dudley. Mingelt. 81-66.
- 1:41:11Gettler in this fourth period has put it together again.
- 1:41:13Gilmore at the Mingelt with six seconds on the shot but Gilmore trying to follow and McInnis has it.
- 1:41:19McInnis that guy just fought him off.
- 1:41:21Well, they brought Charlie Dudley in to see if he could do something defensively with David Thompson.
- 1:41:29Excuse me, Gary, but they seem to have missed something with Wilber Holland out of the lineup.
- 1:41:33Here's Brown driving and he's intimidated and it is really tough inside.
- 1:41:39Here comes Boswell up to Thompson. McInnis.
- 1:41:43Gilmore and Gilmore's fouling.
- 1:41:47You talk about a meeting up above the basket.
- 1:41:49Well, they set a little prayer up there.
- 1:41:51You see Thompson draws and Gilmore turns his back making McInnis think he's got the easy stuff.
- 1:41:56That looks like a pretty good play if Gilmore doesn't get that arm there and the bodies collide.
- 1:42:00That's a good fly.
- 1:42:02Free fouls on Artis Gilmore and McInnis to the line.
- 1:42:05Now you see his shooting percentage from the strike, not what he'd like to have.
- 1:42:09He's not shot well but he's always been there and that's important.
- 1:42:12I think if you get there enough times eventually your concentration and your efforts picks up.
- 1:42:17The Denver Nuggets doing a fine job defensively making the Chicago Bulls turn the ball over,
- 1:42:22come back and they have extended their lead.
- 1:42:25Chicago must now settle down and get some hoops.
- 1:42:28They should try really to get back running, getting some quick opportunities and scoring a little bit easier.
- 1:42:32I bet your point was well made that when they took the guard outside,
- 1:42:37hollering out of the lineup they may have lost a little something.
- 1:42:39You know, Hollen is a guy that can give them that firepower, give them that quickness to get down court and they haven't had that.
- 1:42:44There's Brown hitting from the corner.
- 1:42:4683-68, that's only the fourth point in this third or I should say fourth period for Chicago.
- 1:42:53They had 64 points after three periods.
- 1:42:56And up and down quarters as far as team shooting, Denver had the better from the first half
- 1:43:00and then only were six for 20 at one point during the third.
- 1:43:04Scott dribbled that one off his foot.
- 1:43:07Chicago will have it and that is the 13th turnover against Denver.
- 1:43:13And Gelt Dudley Gilmore, Brown and Landsberger.
- 1:43:17That's the five in there now for Laurie Costello's team.
- 1:43:19McGinnis on to steal a 10, Brown double dribble.
- 1:43:24He was in too big a hurry.
- 1:43:26John Brown is pained, he knew he had a free chance to put the ball up.
- 1:43:30McGinnis had gambled and was half court and he just couldn't control it.
- 1:43:33And again another turnover and that's plaguing Chicago as they try to make their comeback bid.
- 1:43:37You know, McGinnis is tense with the NBA and steals.
- 1:43:40They almost had one there.
- 1:43:41Here's Landsberger, that's 22 rebounds for him unless we lost count somewhere.
- 1:43:45He's had so many of them we have to keep checking the stats.
- 1:43:48He's done an excellent job of going to the board.
- 1:43:50He's really kept them in the game.
- 1:43:51Mingale gets the ball up from the outside.
- 1:43:53They've got to have good defensive pressure, not turn the ball over.
- 1:43:57They're going to make it all the way back.
- 1:43:5913 point game after cutting it to nine and now Denver still not out of this one with eight minutes to go.
- 1:44:07Scott into Boswell, route on him.
- 1:44:11Boswell and we've got charging on Boswell.
- 1:44:13He had no place to go.
- 1:44:14He had no place to go.
- 1:44:15He can't believe it.
- 1:44:17He's got that pained look on your face.
- 1:44:19You see right here John Brown making up for the mistake at the other end does an excellent job with a little hand in there to get an advantage.
- 1:44:26And then he gets his body in front of it.
- 1:44:28That against Boswell, his second personal.
- 1:44:30Mingale off the Landsberger.
- 1:44:33John Brown, they're pushing him outside a little bit on defense now.
- 1:44:36They pushed him much higher out, but they get the ball down and deep and again they close.
- 1:44:41Again, this happened in the last time they played.
- 1:44:43They begin to come back.
- 1:44:44The Nuggets working pretty hard.
- 1:44:46Defensively have them outside.
- 1:44:48Mingale makes an excellent penetrating move.
- 1:44:51You see Landsberger rolls inside.
- 1:44:53Nothing but honey.
- 1:44:56Get away.

- 1:46:32A month ago today, it was a Chicago victory here at McNickles Arena against Denver, but boys did they've had to spend a lot of effort to play catch up all afternoon long.
- 1:46:41Also a month ago today, Denver had the same type of league and they ended up losing it.
- 1:46:45So Larry Brown is cognizant of that and he's telling his team to keep good offensive pressure on the bull.
- 1:46:51David Thompson with Dudley on him.
- 1:46:53And this time he can't get it.
- 1:46:55Brown lost it.
- 1:46:58Another crack at it for Denver.
- 1:47:00Andy Williams open immediately following the conclusion of this game.
- 1:47:04Stay with us for that.
- 1:47:05Coaches try when they see that.
- 1:47:06You get the ball up from the outside, you have the board covered.
- 1:47:09McGinnis just barrels over.
- 1:47:12John Brown.
- 1:47:13Lansberger comes away with it off to Dudley.
- 1:47:16Scott is back.
- 1:47:17Mengel.
- 1:47:19What a shot that was.
- 1:47:21We had two people all over him and who touched it last?
- 1:47:24I think Denver did.
- 1:47:26Let's see.
- 1:47:27Well, they should have gotten a foul out of that.
- 1:47:29He came up and showed the ball and brought it back and he pushed it up in the air.
- 1:47:33It went all the way over the top.
- 1:47:34They say David Thompson nixed it.
- 1:47:36You see Mengel working in there.
- 1:47:37A little showing tail.
- 1:47:38Puts it up way high off the glass.
- 1:47:41Goes all the way over the back.
- 1:47:42Dudley's ready to catch it.
- 1:47:46Wilbur Holland checks back in.
- 1:47:47Dudley will check out for the Bulls at the 7'13 mark.
- 1:47:52Lansberger, the Mengel, shooting against Scott.
- 1:47:55Rebound McGinnis.
- 1:48:00McGinnis who can handle the ball.
- 1:48:02Off to Bobby Wilkerson.
- 1:48:06McGinnis picked up by Lansberger.
- 1:48:08Smith with Wilbur Holland on him.
- 1:48:09Inside seven minutes to go in the game.
- 1:48:12I don't believe McGinnis thought that was going to go in.
- 1:48:15Well, you've got to get a look in this game.
- 1:48:17Now when he put it high up in the air and it came off the glass, they get the basket.
- 1:48:20They got a 13-point lead.
- 1:48:2218 points for McGinnis.
- 1:48:25Mengel.
- 1:48:26Well, as McGinnis has been very consistent this year, he's been over 30 points seven times.
- 1:48:30Mengel, another outside shot.
- 1:48:32He nails it.
- 1:48:33Scott May getting ready to come in for Chicago.
- 1:48:36It's 85-74.
- 1:48:40Wilkerson out to Scott.
- 1:48:42Kemper with good ball movement.
- 1:48:43Mengel comes away with it, but I believe he picked up the foul.
- 1:48:47He thought he had a clean steal.
- 1:48:49It looked like a clean steal.
- 1:48:50McGinnis just apparently had lost control.
- 1:48:53He had made a quick move inside.
- 1:48:54There were two people in there on him, and Chicago came up with the ball.
- 1:48:58Larry Costello right in front of him.
- 1:49:00Lee, I don't believe that.
- 1:49:01Come on, you're kidding.
- 1:49:04With 6-21, Mengel has picked up his second personal foul.
- 1:49:10Four team fouls now against Chicago, only one against Denver.
- 1:49:14Looks like McGinnis is a little shaken up on that play.
- 1:49:17Taking a bit of a breather.
- 1:49:23That Mengel is a tough guy.
- 1:49:25He was a football player at Auburn.
- 1:49:27He won't back off from anybody.
- 1:49:29He plays a little bit of football out there, but you need a guy that will go on the floor and come up with a loose ball for you and give you a good, honest effort out there to make a successful basketball team.
- 1:49:38McGinnis putting on a couple of moves, dishes it off to Smith, and he misses an easy one.
- 1:49:43Here comes Wilbur Holland.
- 1:49:44They've got a chance now to climb the closest they've been in a long time, 85-74 our score.
- 1:49:51They got within 9 earlier, and they're trying again to do that very thing.
- 1:49:54Gilmore, and it's a big turnover.
- 1:49:58Smith.
- 1:50:01He had enough spin on that ball that it got him.
- 1:50:03Just enough.
- 1:50:04He was low on the ground, and he just got it up as Mingelt was chasing to hit the lip and fell in for them.
- 1:50:10Chicago really a little frustrated as they try to run their off-pin.
- 1:50:1418 turnovers, and that was a big turnover.
- 1:50:17Gilmore to Scott May, and Mingelt, Smith hits the deck.
- 1:50:21Smith picks up the foul.
- 1:50:24Talking about a little football.
- 1:50:28Robert Smith, he's not a very big guy, he's 5'11", they say he weighs 165. Mingelt, he's solid.
- 1:50:34He comes in here at 6'2", and they list him at 195.
- 1:50:38If Robert Smith continues to run into picks like that, he'll be 5'5", before his career is over.
- 1:50:44Landsberger with McGinnis on him.
- 1:50:46Scott May, well, it's a tough shot.
- 1:50:49Landsberger trying to follow.
- 1:50:50There he is again with another rebound.
- 1:50:52I believe that ties his personal high of 23.
- 1:50:56That's just a great rebounding effort.
- 1:50:58He's got a lot of offensive boards to keep the ball alive, and Holland gets it down for them.
- 1:51:02Holland has been tough.
- 1:51:04He has 16 points.
- 1:51:05He's been shooting and shooting well from outside.
- 1:51:11That was his 23rd rebound for Landsberger, tying his career high.
- 1:51:18And now, he's got another foul.
- 1:51:21George McGinnis, and that's his third.
- 1:51:25He's got a chance to get within 9.
- 1:51:29They've got a chance to get within 9 with 4.56 left, almost five minutes left in the game.
- 1:51:34Plenty of time.
- 1:51:35What they must have is good offensive execution.
- 1:51:37They've been hitting the board good.
- 1:51:38They just got to cut down on the turnover.
- 1:51:41Scott May into Gilmore.
- 1:51:424.46 left in the game.
- 1:51:44Gilmore looking around, backing in on Issel, and he forced it, but he couldn't get it.
- 1:51:50It just can't get inside that 10-point mark here, and there's McGinnis.
- 1:51:56He is tied up, but a foul will go on Wilbur Holland.
- 1:52:03Larry Costello not too happy about that development.
- 1:52:06McGinnis goes to the line.
- 1:52:07It looked like they had McGinnis tied up right there.
- 1:52:09You see him, man.
- 1:52:10He said, this will make coaches older in a hurry.
- 1:52:13He was out in the league two years.
- 1:52:15He's back in, and I'm sure brings back a few memories of those years he had with Milwaukee.
- 1:52:19He may want that vacation back if they keep going like this.
- 1:52:23George kind of bouncing those free throws around.
- 1:52:25There's Landsberger.
- 1:52:26He has 24 rebounds.
- 1:52:28That's a personal high for him.
- 1:52:30Career high.
- 1:52:33Penalty in, and so it's three to make two, and McGinnis is going to need all of them.
- 1:52:39And he gets the third one.
- 1:52:41McGinnis now with 19 points.
- 1:52:4388-76, oral pressure by Smith on Holland.
- 1:52:47Holland's a tough guy to pressure.
- 1:52:49He's got good quickness, and that makes it difficult.
- 1:52:51He handles the ball well, and more importantly, he's dangerous because he's always looking to score.
- 1:52:55Fias with the left hand can't get it.
- 1:52:58Holland tries to break it up, and Issel saves the ball.
- 1:53:01They're approaching four minutes in this game.
- 1:53:06McGinnis out to Issel.
- 1:53:08Roken up by Fias, but Thompson comes back with it.
- 1:53:12Fias trying to get back on Thompson.
- 1:53:17McGinnis, it's a long ways out.
- 1:53:20Smith comes away with it, of all people.
- 1:53:22He fakes Gilmore up, and Gilmore's committed the foul on Issel.
- 1:53:26That's four on Gilmore.
- 1:53:30That's about the only thing you can do in a situation like that, is hope he goes up with a fake.
- 1:53:33Well, anytime you've got that kind of offensive pressure on you, where the little guy comes in, he almost has it clean,
- 1:53:38and he's got a man on the other side, Gilmore, trying to anticipate.
- 1:53:41Got a piece of the ball, but also got a piece of Dan Issel's head, and Issel's going to get some free throws because of it.
- 1:53:46Chicago's really struggling at the defensive end, and that's hurting them.
- 1:53:51Larry Costello, he's trying to pull one out of here somehow, and it has been an uphill battle.
- 1:53:56Trying to dream of some miracle to get them to run that play that will get them going offensively.
- 1:54:02Again, they're going to take another time out. They're going to have another discussion.
- 1:54:05They're going to see if they can make it right with 3.51 left in the fourth period.

- 1:55:22Hey, where's Bob?
- 1:55:23I thought he was with you.
- 1:55:24You're kidding.
- 1:55:25He's not down yet?
- 1:55:26What, do you think something happened?
- 1:55:28Let's start looking.
- 1:55:29Hey! I'm on a low and brow!
- 1:55:32Bob!
- 1:55:33When you want the taste of a truly great American beer, tonight, let it be low and brow.
- 1:55:40Hey, you know, for a minute there, you really have us worried.
- 1:55:43I know. Thanks.
- 1:55:45MUSIC
- 1:55:49Well, the Chicago Bulls have twice climbed within. 11 points, 9 points, the closest they've been.
- 1:55:54That's been the magic mark here in the second half of play.
- 1:55:57Denver's been able to meet every challenge when they've gotten within 9, and they've played good defense, good offense.
- 1:56:02They've gotten the ball when they needed it.
- 1:56:04As a consequence, they have the lead and the pressure, obviously, on Chicago to make another turnover.
- 1:56:09But Denver returns a favor.
- 1:56:11Guess who got that pass? Larry Costello.
- 1:56:13He wanted the ball anyway to get it.
- 1:56:15LAUGHS
- 1:56:16That's 14 turnovers against Denver.
- 1:56:18Well, they'll try it again. Three and a half minutes left.
- 1:56:21Andy Williams, San Diego, with the follow immediately after this game.
- 1:56:26Here's Landsberger with McEnnis on him. Scott May into Gilmore.
- 1:56:29Gilmore, turn around. That's a tough shot for him.
- 1:56:32Landsberger there again. 25 rebounds.
- 1:56:35He's gonna try it again, and he got it.
- 1:56:37I'm gonna tell you something right now. I'm gonna give him my vote for the MVP.
- 1:56:41Well, you've just gone out on a limb, right?
- 1:56:43LAUGHS
- 1:56:44He's got a contest with David Thompson, who's also answered big hoops for them.
- 1:56:47But Landsberger has been after it all day long.
- 1:56:49He works on his rebounding, so I guess he can give his points totaled up.
- 1:56:52He has 19 points, 26 rebounds.
- 1:56:55First kick there, piece of work.
- 1:56:57Here's Thompson shooting against Fias.
- 1:56:59Tipped out, here comes Fias.
- 1:57:01Fias, look at him move.
- 1:57:03Block by Thompson. Oh, what a play by David Thompson.
- 1:57:07Maybe I'm premature in that post.
- 1:57:10Bobby Wilkerson.
- 1:57:11CHEERING
- 1:57:14Bobby Wilkerson, who had 11 points in the first half, has 15 for the game.
- 1:57:18Well, that people, they like him here a lot.
- 1:57:20David Thompson coming back with another great block.
- 1:57:22He did the same thing against Lou Hudson coming over the top.
- 1:57:25On Friday night, he does it against Fias, who had gone by Robert Smith
- 1:57:29and thought he was in clean.
- 1:57:31All right, Tom Boswell, Cole Ellis, number 31, will come in.
- 1:57:35CHEERING
- 1:57:37Look at that block.
- 1:57:38You see Thompson coming right there, right over the back of Fias,
- 1:57:40way up in the air. Doesn't look like those legs are dead yet.
- 1:57:43We have a timeout now by Chicago with 2.20 left in this game.
- 1:57:50Larry Costello hoping somehow to pull this one out,
- 1:57:56but they obviously have their work cut out for them.
- 1:57:59MUSIC

- 1:58:34All the stars will come out for CBS Sports' exclusive live coverage
- 1:58:39of the NBA All-Star Game from Detroit.
- 1:58:42With the best in the East taking on the best in the West,
- 1:58:45you'll say...
- 1:58:49You saw it on CBS Sports.
- 1:58:52Scott, may you come out hard.
- 1:58:54So we have 2 minutes, 20 seconds left,
- 1:58:56and Larry Costello trying to pull some magic off here.
- 1:59:00This Chicago team who's won the first two games here in McNichols Arena on the 28th of December,
- 1:59:05then they went to the stadium in Chicago and duplicated their effort on the 29th.
- 1:59:10Well, they had two good efforts in a back-to-back series,
- 1:59:13and they seemed to have lost it.
- 1:59:15They played a good first period, got bogged down in the second period,
- 1:59:18and it's been a long climb for them.
- 1:59:20They got within nine in the third period.
- 1:59:22They have been within nine.
- 1:59:23A couple of the 11 or 9 was in the fourth period,
- 1:59:25but they have not been able to get over the hill as Gilmore worked.
- 1:59:28Gilmore misses one that he didn't want to miss.
- 1:59:3092-78.
- 1:59:32Approaching the two-minute period now as Issel to Smith.
- 1:59:37Bobby Wilkerson, Denver won't be in as much of a hurry now.
- 1:59:41Mo Ellis, lead action.
- 1:59:43Ellis has been out for the year with a knee operation.
- 1:59:46Here Smith again, and he hits it.
- 1:59:48Robertson Smith.
- 1:59:51This guy, he was cut once last year, then he was brought back,
- 1:59:55and he has a niche on this basketball team.
- 1:59:5894-78, a minute 51 left.
- 2:00:01Fias from the corner.
- 2:00:03Landsberger, Pablo Timpson, he has 21 points.
- 2:00:0721 points, 27 rebounds.
- 2:00:1294-80.
- 2:00:14Issel, off to Boswell.
- 2:00:17You can see they're in no hurry right now.
- 2:00:19They want to use some of that time.
- 2:00:21Well, they use that clock to have everything in their favor.
- 2:00:23Robert Smith makes a tough try.
- 2:00:25Landsberger with another rebound, and Fias, really a good athletic effort.
- 2:00:28He gets the hoop.
- 2:00:30You know, he can use either hand equally well.
- 2:00:32You notice that?
- 2:00:33He was comfortable going up left-handed that time as right-handed.
- 2:00:36Either way, they just have to be a little bit more consistent.
- 2:00:4094-82, off to Boswell.
- 2:00:431-14 left in this one.
- 2:00:48Denver trying to win their second in a row after breaking a three-game losing streak Friday night.
- 2:00:52Bo Ellis.
- 2:00:53Issel, nice play by Bo Ellis.
- 2:00:56Issel with 12 points.
- 2:01:0096-82, Alan De Fias.
- 2:01:02One minute left.
- 2:01:05Gilmore.
- 2:01:07Gilmore hasn't scored an awful lot in the second half.
- 2:01:09Fias.
- 2:01:10Well, Denver's done a good job of doubling up on him,
- 2:01:12making him take the shot from the position that he doesn't want.
- 2:01:15Early in the ballgame, he was able to go in a one-on-one situation,
- 2:01:18wheel and roll inside and get any kind of hoop.
- 2:01:20And they started sending a bunch of people at him,
- 2:01:23and that changed Chicago's offensive effort completely.
- 2:01:26He's had only seven points in the second half.
- 2:01:28He has 20 for the game.
- 2:01:30Scott May driving inside, and he's been fouled.
- 2:01:33And they got a goaltender. Bobby Wilkerson went up and slapped that ball away.
- 2:01:38You'll see May out here now.
- 2:01:39He makes a good move to get by Bo Ellis.
- 2:01:41This is not smart basketball by Wilkerson as he slaps it away dead.
- 2:01:44It looks like that ball was easy to be close to going in.
- 2:01:47And maybe Bobby Wilkerson has given his teammate a break.
- 2:01:51So the basket will go to Scott May.
- 2:01:54Scott Lloyd now comes in replacing artist Gilmore.
- 2:01:57John Brown will come into the ballgame.
- 2:02:00Mark Landsberger will go out.
- 2:02:02Landsberger with 28 rebounds, 21 points.
- 2:02:06I give him my vote.
- 2:02:08Where are you on this one?
- 2:02:09Well, I thought David Thompson, he challenged him at every time,
- 2:02:12and I think that, you know, we kind of split on that.
- 2:02:14We might have to call for Billy Barnes to bail us out on that.
- 2:02:17All right, Bill Barnes, you will cast this siding vote.
- 2:02:20Put the old pressure on.
- 2:02:22Twenty-five seconds left.
- 2:02:24Smith.
- 2:02:26Scott Lloyd trying to get the ball,
- 2:02:28and Robert Smith instead comes away with it.
- 2:02:32Denver to win their 28th game of the year.
- 2:02:35And here Hughes put one away.
- 2:02:37Six points for Hughes.
- 2:02:40So Mark Landsberger is our MVP.
- 2:02:43Bill Barnes casts the siding vote.
- 2:02:45Doubling up on me like the Chicago Bulls are being doubled up
- 2:02:48like Scott May out there.
- 2:02:50John Brown working hard.
- 2:02:51He gets it down, but a little bit too late.
- 2:02:53It's all academic now.
- 2:02:55The score is 98 to 67, and there's our Most Valuable Player.
- 2:03:00The Chevrolet Most Valuable Player Award goes to Mark Landsberger.
- 2:03:04Twenty-one points, 28 rebounds.
- 2:03:06The Chevrolet $1,000 scholarship will be awarded to Arizona State
- 2:03:11on behalf of Mark Landsberger.
- 2:03:14So 98 to 87, our score, the Denver Nuggets,
- 2:03:18after dropping the first two games of the year to the Chicago Bulls,
- 2:03:22after day three.
- 2:03:28The Miller people promised me a case of light beer
- 2:03:30if I could keep this ball spinning for the length of this commercial.
- 2:03:32Now, I'm not one to show off, but I do just about anything for a few light beers.
- 2:03:36You see, light's got a third less calories than the regular beer
- 2:03:38and it's less filling, so I can stay loose.
- 2:03:40But the thing I like best is the taste.
- 2:03:42And I believe it this time that somebody here owes me a case of that taste.
- 2:03:46Thanks a lot, boys. See you around.
- 2:03:50Light beer from Miller. Everything you always wanted in a beer. And less.
- 2:03:54Hey, Charlie.
- 2:03:56This is it.
- 2:03:58This is it. America's a new Chevrolet.
- 2:04:02America, if you're looking for a full-size car that goes easy on the gas.
- 2:04:06This is it.
- 2:04:08And easy on the road.
- 2:04:10This is it.
- 2:04:11A car with all kinds of room inside.
- 2:04:13This is it.
- 2:04:14The new Chevrolet, a new generation car
- 2:04:16bought and embraced by more than a million people in its first two years.
- 2:04:20Caprice and Impala for $19.79.
- 2:04:22This is it. America, look, new Chevrolet.
- 2:04:28Owen's Corning would like to help you understand insulation R values.
- 2:04:32R stands for resistance to heat flow.
- 2:04:34It's the right way to measure insulating power, not thickness.
- 2:04:38Look, it takes about 18 feet of stone to give you an R value of R-19,
- 2:04:42but only 15 inches of wood and six inches of this Owen's Corning fiberglass insulation.
- 2:04:48So check for R value.
- 2:04:50The higher the R value, the greater the insulating power.
- 2:04:53Want to know about insulation? Ask the experts. Ask Owen's Corning.
- 2:05:03It's all over at McNichols Arena.
- 2:05:05The Denver Nuggets defeating the Chicago Bulls, 98 to 87.
- 2:05:09An update on Mark Landsberger officially now.
- 2:05:11He's been credited with 29 rebounds.
- 2:05:15A go at his 21 points, and of course, he's our MVP.
- 2:05:18But as you look at this Denver attack, they got very good balance scoring.
- 2:05:22David Thompson led the way with 27 points, but he was closely followed by George McEnnis with 19.
- 2:05:29It was 15 points for Bobby Wilkerson, 12 for Dan Issell.
- 2:05:34And then they had some good scoring off the bench from Hughes with six,
- 2:05:37Roberts with four, and Robert Smith with a total of eight.
- 2:05:41As far as Chicago's concerned, leading the way was Landsberger.
- 2:05:45He was followed by Gilmore, who had 20 points.
