- 0:40[SPEAKER_00]: Hey everybody, Brian Smith here with the IM team series and your daily influence and how are we going to as leaders be able to measure the impact of our leadership on our organizations success.
- 0:56[SPEAKER_00]: What does that even mean?
- 0:57[SPEAKER_00]: What does it even look like?
- 0:59[SPEAKER_00]: And it's so important for us to be able to measure our impact.
- 1:04[SPEAKER_00]: It gives us the fulfillment of knowing that we are leading our team.
- 1:09[SPEAKER_00]: the way we hope that we are.
- 1:11[SPEAKER_00]: Because look, if we only rely on our own perspectives, we might not see below the bales.
- 1:17[SPEAKER_00]: We might not see under the hood of what's going on.
- 1:20[SPEAKER_00]: And oftentimes our teams shield us from some of the negative things that are going on for a myriad of reasons.
- 1:28[SPEAKER_00]: So, what can we do to set ourselves up for more clear success
- 1:36[SPEAKER_00]: of our success.
- 1:38[SPEAKER_00]: And not just for us, but for our organization.
- 1:41[SPEAKER_00]: And the first thing is is defining what success is using the smart goal concept.
- 1:48[SPEAKER_00]: What that means is being specific, highlight the importance of clearly defining what success looks like to each individual operating unit in your organization in your area of influence.
- 2:00[SPEAKER_00]: What does it look like for the leaders?
- 2:03[SPEAKER_00]: for you, but for each individual eater and underneath them each individual person, to find that specific success.
- 2:11[SPEAKER_00]: Then when you layer that success in a more individual manner, the influence that you have, and the influence that they have on achieving their individual success becomes more cumulative, and it makes more sense, it has more context for you.
- 2:28[SPEAKER_00]: So setting those measurable objectives, improved employee engagement, improved communication, better communication, and customer service ratings or customer ratings, whenever ways that you can measure,
- 2:43[SPEAKER_00]: what you're doing within your organization, pay better attention to that, improve the way you look at your analytics.
- 2:52[SPEAKER_00]: And as we're talking about analytics, discuss the tools you're using if they're not effective, if they're not efficient, think of better ways to collect that data.
- 3:01[SPEAKER_00]: What key performance indicators actually means something, don't just create them to have them.
- 3:12[SPEAKER_00]: They just look good.
- 3:14[SPEAKER_00]: If you're going to measure it, measure it for a purpose, have a reason.
- 3:18[SPEAKER_00]: Be specific about that reason.
- 3:21[SPEAKER_00]: And then give feedback on that and use that data.
- 3:25[SPEAKER_00]: Be specific about how you're going to use your measurements.
- 3:28[SPEAKER_00]: That's how you can measure success.
- 3:31[SPEAKER_00]: If you're going to measure it, but not pay attention to it ignore it.
- 3:35[SPEAKER_00]: Make excuses for justifying it.
- 3:38[SPEAKER_00]: then you're not really using it to improve, using it to grow, and if you're not doing that, you're not really being an effective leader in your area of influence, and then make sure that you're relevant, that your leadership aligns with the values, the culture, the vision, and spread that into your organization so that you see improvement.
- 4:02[SPEAKER_00]: When you see people falling
- 4:06[SPEAKER_00]: not able to define these things, lift them up, make it part of how you communicate throughout your organization, make your culture, make your core values, make your organizational values relevant to what you do as an organization, which that makes it relevant to what each individual does in their area of influence and supporting your organization.
- 4:29[SPEAKER_00]: And as we get down into these layers
- 4:34[SPEAKER_00]: What ourselves, the teams that report to us, the teams we influence, have an insist on personal accountability.
- 4:44[SPEAKER_00]: Great leaders recognize their individual rewards, their individual impact, but they also recognize
- 4:58[SPEAKER_00]: getting and getting that improvement.
- 5:01[SPEAKER_00]: Take responsibility for the outcome of your overall organization and then teach your team how to take responsibility for the outcome of each of their specific areas of influence.
- 5:12[SPEAKER_00]: Give them the tools, the smart tools, be specific and measurable to understand how to reach those goals, how to use tactics, how to use the tools that you're
- 5:24[SPEAKER_00]: Look, if you're just doing things without doing it with a purpose, having context for why you're implementing these KPIs, why you're implementing technology, what it's there, what purpose does it serve?
- 5:38[SPEAKER_00]: You're just making noise.
- 5:40[SPEAKER_00]: And when you bring the team into help define these things, you're inherently creating team development.
- 5:46[SPEAKER_00]: You're also creating
- 5:51[SPEAKER_00]: As we learn about how we use data and how we tactically engage with data and make decisions, our ability to define what accountability becomes clearer.
- 6:04[SPEAKER_00]: And when we do this in a rinse and repeat repetitive consistent way, we begin to influence the development of culture that not only supports
- 6:17[SPEAKER_00]: But improves and almost guarantees success and guarantees we're going to reach where we have defined we want to be.
- 6:27[SPEAKER_00]: And then move that out into longer term opportunities.
- 6:34[SPEAKER_00]: And by longer term opportunities, you'll begin to see where you can go.
- 6:39[SPEAKER_00]: When you are clearly defined in the moment
- 6:47[SPEAKER_00]: and you're learning from the mistakes that you make along the way, you can better create a path forward because you can better anticipate how your actions and how your team will perform when faced with the challenges that come with improvement.
- 7:04[SPEAKER_00]: So sustainable growth requires a plan, give that to them.
- 7:09[SPEAKER_00]: But make them use those tools over and over and over again and lean into those tools,
- 7:18[SPEAKER_00]: using everything that they have at their disposal to have the most positive and responsible influence they can in whatever area of influence they are and let them use that to the best of their abilities and then get out of their way.
- 7:34[SPEAKER_00]: Look over their shoulder if you have to
- 7:37[SPEAKER_00]: Give them a tap once in a while, provide some of that accountability, provide some of that leadership and support they mean, but let them do what they're supposed to do.
- 7:46[SPEAKER_00]: You will see them become more resilient, more adaptable, and become stronger leaders within each of their areas too.
- 7:54[SPEAKER_00]: And as they do that and grow better as a team, you as a leader will grow better also, and your organizational become more stable and more successful.
- 8:03[SPEAKER_00]: And then you will create a legacy of success that you can measure urine and urine out, that you can count on urine and urine regardless of what you face.
- 8:17[SPEAKER_00]: The challenges become opportunities, the lessons become improvement.
- 8:23[SPEAKER_00]: It's a great time to apply this to your organization into yourself.
- 8:29[SPEAKER_00]: Be reflective, be bold, be smart.
- 8:33[SPEAKER_00]: I hope you've enjoyed today's podcast and I hope you have a great day.
