- 1:04SPEAKER_00: Who's our guest, Mr.
- 1:05SPEAKER_03: Mars?
- 1:06SPEAKER_03: This is Marshall Reed.
- 1:08SPEAKER_03: He came in in a 1932 Ford Roadster out there that's got a really unique finish on it, and that's really what'll get your attention, besides just the fact that it's a roadster and uh love roadsters.
- 1:18SPEAKER_03: So, Marshall, tell us a little bit about your car.
- 1:22SPEAKER_04: It's a 1932 Ford Roadster.
- 1:26SPEAKER_04: Oh, here you go.
- 1:27SPEAKER_04: There you go.
- 1:28SPEAKER_04: You gotta get it tight here.
- 1:30SPEAKER_04: Uh 1932 Ford Roadster.
- 1:32SPEAKER_04: It has a uh Chevrolet engine, and most people call that a uh uh if you have a Ford 32 Ford uh with a Chevrolet engine, they call that a belly button.
- 1:43SPEAKER_04: Uh because a lot of uh hot rudders do that.
- 1:46SPEAKER_03: So I just thought that's the way they came.
- 1:49SPEAKER_03: Yeah, there's so many of them, right?
- 1:53SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 1:55SPEAKER_03: So the what what do you got up there under the hood?
- 1:59SPEAKER_04: Uh you said it's a Chevrolet, but yeah, it's a 350 um ZZ4 high performance out of the great Chevrolet engine.
- 2:10SPEAKER_03: Great motor, and you got it backed with a Trimek five speed.
- 2:14SPEAKER_03: Five speed, nice.
- 2:15SPEAKER_03: Yeah, instead of going with the automatic, like a whole lot of people do.
- 2:19SPEAKER_04: Yeah, I I like I like three pedals.
- 2:21SPEAKER_03: Yeah, yeah, very good, very good.
- 2:23SPEAKER_03: Yeah, we're uh we were talking about the the finish on yeah, it's an unusual finish.
- 2:29SPEAKER_04: Uh it's uh it's a brushed finish.
- 2:33SPEAKER_04: It's um um it's a satin original finish, and then it's then it's sanded as a brush finish.
- 2:42SPEAKER_04: And then uh it's uh as you saw the card.
- 2:48SPEAKER_04: No, it's black.
- 2:49SPEAKER_04: Okay, it's a black satin black, and then the the the texture has a has a brush like you're gonna paint it again, and uh then it's then it's uh uh pinstriped on top of that.
- 3:04SPEAKER_04: So yeah.
- 3:05SPEAKER_04: Oh wow, that's a real cool car.
- 3:08SPEAKER_03: Yeah, yeah, it's kind of sitting over there uh straight across from us on the other side of this the black truck that came in.
- 3:14SPEAKER_04: Yeah, so it's uh black and then it's highlighted with red, and the red is the motor and the inside of the frame.
- 3:23SPEAKER_04: Yeah, and then the inside of the frame is uh red too.
- 3:27SPEAKER_04: So you don't know it's red until you uh put it up on Jackson, it's all red on the underside.
- 3:35SPEAKER_02: Do you live in the area here?
- 3:37SPEAKER_04: Uh I live in town, Houston, yeah.
- 3:39SPEAKER_04: About an hour drive from here.
- 3:40SPEAKER_03: Yeah, but yeah, it's still Houston, though.
- 3:42SPEAKER_03: We've been an hour from here.
- 3:44SPEAKER_04: Yeah, and it was raining when we left, so yeah.
- 3:47SPEAKER_04: And you left with the top.
- 3:49SPEAKER_03: Yeah, no top.
- 3:50SPEAKER_03: And your wife was with you.
- 3:51SPEAKER_03: Oh yeah.
- 3:52SPEAKER_03: Yeah, she likes she loves the roadster, it's cool.
- 3:55SPEAKER_03: Um, yeah.
- 3:56SPEAKER_03: I keep telling my wife that, but she's not she hasn't bought into it yet.
- 4:00SPEAKER_03: Well, well, some days.
- 4:03SPEAKER_04: Well, you gotta take her out in the roadster board, you know.
- 4:06SPEAKER_04: It's great at sunsets.
- 4:08SPEAKER_04: I I agree.
- 4:09SPEAKER_04: Yeah, you know, I think I think that'd be the way to go.
- 4:12SPEAKER_04: Yeah, I'm lucky guy.
- 4:20SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 4:23SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 4:24SPEAKER_04: So we we always go to you know the Austin Roundup.
- 4:28SPEAKER_04: Oh, that's nice.
- 4:29SPEAKER_04: Many of my car buddies here today will we'll all go together.
- 4:33SPEAKER_03: That's very good.
- 4:34SPEAKER_03: I used to cover that long time ago for a magazine Alpha on the West Coast.
- 4:39SPEAKER_03: And uh back whenever I could literally go down there uh on South Congress at night in front of the Continental Club.
- 4:45SPEAKER_03: It used to be that way, and I could literally set my camera on a tripod in the middle of the road where the turning lane is not anymore.
- 4:51SPEAKER_03: And I mean, all night long, just buzzing pictures.
- 4:53SPEAKER_03: Oh, yeah.
- 4:54SPEAKER_03: Last time I was up there, uh the magazine got home and he said, You want to go back?
- 4:58SPEAKER_03: And I went back up there, and uh first thing that cops said no, it ain't exactly now like it was now.
- 5:06SPEAKER_04: There's cops on every intersection, and and we go there for the show and don't necessarily go to Congress.
- 5:12SPEAKER_04: We used to be on Congress all the time, so yeah.
- 5:15SPEAKER_03: Yeah, it got to be to the point out at the park where they were having it.
- 5:19SPEAKER_03: I guess out there is still on Durker, Decker.
- 5:21SPEAKER_03: Yeah, on Decker.
- 5:23SPEAKER_03: Yeah, yeah.
- 5:23SPEAKER_03: I mean, you go out there, uh and people would I mean one o'clock, they're headed for Congress to give a parking spot.
- 5:31SPEAKER_03: It's like, no, you know, you're you're you're losing it too much.
- 5:34SPEAKER_03: Yep, that's what's going on.
- 5:36SPEAKER_04: But anyway, still bound to be fine.
- 5:38SPEAKER_04: That's right.
- 5:39SPEAKER_04: Yeah, we need to get uh more younger people into hot rotting.
- 5:43SPEAKER_04: So uh uh any young people out there want to get into hot rotting, give me a buzz and uh let's figure it out.
- 5:51SPEAKER_03: So, what do you do for a living that you can do all this?
- 5:54SPEAKER_04: I'm an architect.
- 5:57SPEAKER_04: There you go.
- 5:58SPEAKER_04: Yeah, I'm an I'm an architect, uh, been practicing over 30 years, uh 45 years actually, and uh enjoy that and and uh and it's able to fuel my hobby, right?
- 6:12SPEAKER_03: Right, right, right, right.
- 6:14SPEAKER_03: And I noticed that on your car you had some uh uh some not some LA clubs or something.
- 6:20SPEAKER_04: Uh Houston Roadster Club, which we saw that yeah.
- 6:23SPEAKER_04: We were to we met this morning, I wasn't there, but they met this morning.

- 7:17SPEAKER_04: Um any kind of roadster, there's a lot of different kinds of roads.
- 7:20SPEAKER_04: Oh, yeah.
- 7:24SPEAKER_03: Uh no, they they build them.
- 7:28SPEAKER_03: And uh the father started the business, he passed, and so they came out and uh the mother was driving one.
- 7:38SPEAKER_03: She came out and won.
- 7:39SPEAKER_03: I think they brought four out that day to hear, and we saw him one more at the time uh down at um school events we did or something.
- 7:46SPEAKER_03: Yeah, is it sure it's not Bruce's Rod Shop?
- 7:48SPEAKER_04: Bruce's, that's it.
- 7:50SPEAKER_04: Out of spring, Spring, Texas.
- 7:52SPEAKER_05: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 7:53SPEAKER_04: Yeah, they come out.
- 7:54SPEAKER_04: Yeah, well, no, no, they're at they're at the roaster club.
- 8:01SPEAKER_04: Houston roasters, and they're building a car for me right now.
- 8:05SPEAKER_04: So oh yeah, yeah.
- 8:07SPEAKER_04: Better than that one?
- 8:08SPEAKER_02: How many do you have?
- 8:10SPEAKER_04: Oh only two.
- 8:14SPEAKER_04: Yeah, no, I've had a few.
- 8:16SPEAKER_04: That's why they're getting at me.
- 8:17SPEAKER_04: They're these are my buds here.
- 8:20SPEAKER_04: Currently I have two cars, one's in the right at Bruce's being uh rebuilt.
- 8:25SPEAKER_02: Did you drive it?
- 8:28SPEAKER_04: No, there's my wife right there.
- 8:29SPEAKER_03: I know, but does she drive one of them?
- 8:31SPEAKER_02: Oh, that's getting together now.
- 8:34SPEAKER_02: All right, let's think about confusing mic over here.
- 8:36SPEAKER_03: Yeah, and that don't take a whole lot to do.
- 8:40SPEAKER_03: So, what is what do you use your daily driver?
- 8:43unknown: Thank you.
- 8:47SPEAKER_04: An outie SUV.
- 8:50SPEAKER_04: Why not?
- 8:51SPEAKER_04: Why not?
- 8:52SPEAKER_04: Gotta have it for business, right?
- 8:53SPEAKER_04: That's right, that's right.
- 8:55SPEAKER_04: Yeah, yeah.
- 8:56SPEAKER_04: The roasters are not too safe.
- 8:58SPEAKER_03: Well, don't say that very loud because that's what my wife keeps telling me.
- 9:03SPEAKER_04: Yeah, you're you have a roaster.
- 9:05SPEAKER_03: No, I want one, uh and uh so it's it's kind of uh well.
- 9:12SPEAKER_04: So this is a way to get around this, honey.
- 9:14SPEAKER_04: This is the car I bought you.
- 9:16SPEAKER_04: That's that's how I got the roadster.
- 9:19SPEAKER_04: Ah so that car is actually my wife Cindy's car.
- 9:22SPEAKER_04: Uh huh.
- 9:23SPEAKER_04: Is it her name?
- 9:24SPEAKER_04: Yeah, she's laughing about it over there.
- 9:26SPEAKER_04: She thinks that's really funny.
- 9:32SPEAKER_04: Yeah, so I I've uh we've gone to uh vacant parking lots to show her how to drive it, and it's not been very successful.
- 9:40SPEAKER_02: That's all right, and it's got a lot of horsepower.
- 9:44SPEAKER_03: No, she said, yeah, she said she can handle it, man.
- 9:50SPEAKER_02: Yeah, she's done it for you.
- 9:52SPEAKER_02: The other one will have air conditioning, see.
- 9:54SPEAKER_00: Are you are you are you having a uh margarita right now?
- 9:58SPEAKER_04: I am yeah it is.
- 9:59SPEAKER_04: I'm having my second margarita right now.
- 10:01SPEAKER_04: Oh duh, yes, absolutely.
- 10:05SPEAKER_00: I'm just never meeting you, and uh all I caught was uh there's something about a manual transmission somewhere.
- 10:12SPEAKER_04: Yeah, yeah, roaster and in the coupe.
- 10:15SPEAKER_04: Um five speed, yeah.
- 10:18SPEAKER_04: Oh, the one they're building.
- 10:18SPEAKER_03: Bruce is building a coupe, yeah.
- 10:20SPEAKER_02: Bruce is out here last time when they had the free roasters on here.
- 10:23SPEAKER_02: He's having a roaster built on the coupe.
- 10:28SPEAKER_00: That's where you can get the air conditioning and stuff in the three-window coupe.
- 10:31SPEAKER_00: Now, now who is that woman there on the left?
- 10:34SPEAKER_00: That is his wife, his wife, okay.
- 10:39SPEAKER_00: This is my wife.
- 10:40SPEAKER_00: Well, so I didn't I didn't know any of that.
- 10:42SPEAKER_00: So there was an open place to sit there, and and I sat down there, and she and I, you know, you can guy, and and and she says, Oh, that's my husband.
- 10:52SPEAKER_00: Like I was gonna go try to pick her up or something.
- 10:55SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I just need a place to sit.
- 10:57SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it's more important right now than looking for any of that.
- 11:00SPEAKER_00: Now, yeah, you can't deny that.
- 11:02SPEAKER_00: That's the way that it is.
- 11:03SPEAKER_02: He would cost you too much.
- 11:06SPEAKER_00: I would that's right, in hospital bills.
- 11:09SPEAKER_04: But both of them are so used to it they have to introduce themselves like that.
- 11:13SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah.
- 11:15SPEAKER_00: I got I think I've I've got a girlfriend now that's trying to protect me because because wait a minute, his blood sugar is off, and um he's gonna pass out, so just get out of the way.
- 11:26SPEAKER_00: Let me put him back in the car.
- 11:28SPEAKER_00: That kind of thing.
- 11:31SPEAKER_00: Are you?
- 11:33SPEAKER_00: So, what does the rest of the day look like for you guys?
- 11:35SPEAKER_04: Uh we're well, since I'm an architect, we're gonna go look at a building.
- 11:40SPEAKER_04: Oh, God.
- 11:41SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I know.
- 11:41SPEAKER_02: So are you are you still do that?
- 11:43SPEAKER_04: Or not retired.
- 11:45SPEAKER_04: Oh my god.
- 11:46SPEAKER_04: And why don't people ask me that?
- 11:47SPEAKER_04: You know what?
- 11:48SPEAKER_04: Why don't people ask me that?
- 11:49SPEAKER_04: You know, because they're because they're jealous, that's why just because all you guys have gray hair doesn't mean I'm retired.
- 12:00SPEAKER_00: No, uh I'm about to be, and not by choice.
- 12:05SPEAKER_02: It's it's it's uh yeah, not by choice.
- 12:07SPEAKER_02: No, we asked them.
- 12:09SPEAKER_04: No, I'm um uh I I like my work, I love my work actually.
- 12:13SPEAKER_02: Folks out here that retired that have car collections.
- 12:16SPEAKER_02: Oh, yeah.
- 12:16SPEAKER_00: Hey honey, I got a great date for us.
- 12:18SPEAKER_00: We're gonna go look at some buildings.
- 12:20SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah.
- 12:21SPEAKER_02: Let's take the let's take it.
- 12:23SPEAKER_00: It was her suggestion.
- 12:24SPEAKER_00: It was her suggestion.
- 12:25SPEAKER_00: We're gonna have some great times.
- 12:27SPEAKER_00: So are you getting ideas to design or no?
- 12:30SPEAKER_00: No, no, he's looking at it.
- 12:31SPEAKER_00: Hey, look, that's a really good looking door.
- 12:34SPEAKER_00: I think I'm gonna buy that building.
- 12:36SPEAKER_04: Yeah, you go that kind of thing, kind of thing, yeah.
- 12:40SPEAKER_00: So when you look at a building, what do you look at or for?
- 12:44SPEAKER_00: Oh, uh is this an investment?
- 12:47SPEAKER_04: No, no, no, no.
- 12:48SPEAKER_04: I don't I don't do that anymore.
- 12:50SPEAKER_04: I I just run my architecture firm.
- 12:52SPEAKER_00: Okay, so you say, huh, that's got a really good looking front door.
- 12:57SPEAKER_00: Do you ever say that?
- 12:58SPEAKER_04: I have said that before.
- 12:59SPEAKER_04: I actually have a collection of photographs of front doors.
- 13:03SPEAKER_00: Bing bing bing.
- 13:04SPEAKER_00: I scored on something because it uh okay, then you're a car guy, yeah.
- 13:12SPEAKER_00: When you look at that bus, yeah, what do you see?
- 13:17SPEAKER_04: Classic.
- 13:17SPEAKER_00: No, I know that, but let's drill it down a little bit.
- 13:21SPEAKER_00: And uh, what do you see that really uh attracts you?
- 13:25SPEAKER_00: Uh attracts your attention.
- 13:28SPEAKER_04: I can remember when I had a date in a bus like that.
- 13:31SPEAKER_00: So for me, okay.
- 13:33SPEAKER_00: Well, I never had a date in a bus like that.
- 13:35SPEAKER_00: I wish I had, but you're much much younger than me.
- 13:37SPEAKER_00: You're such a hippie.
- 13:40SPEAKER_00: So, what attracts me to that bus are the curtains.
- 13:45SPEAKER_00: Yeah, no, the it's the curtains, yeah.
- 13:49SPEAKER_00: Because you take the curtains away and it's just a regular VW bus.
- 13:55SPEAKER_00: Yeah, but you put the curtains in it, and it says something, it says to me, I got curtains, I've got curtains, and I've got a place to sleep at night, and I can go camping in it, and uh, I can drive it back and forth to work.
- 14:07SPEAKER_00: It is the era now.
- 14:09SPEAKER_00: That's a 74, yeah.
- 14:10SPEAKER_02: Okay, it's a 74 or 64 74.
- 14:14SPEAKER_02: Really?
- 14:14SPEAKER_00: He's got a 64, but that's a 74.
- 14:17SPEAKER_00: That is a Brazilian, not the kind that you're thinking of, but that's a Brazil, it's made in Brazil.
- 14:23SPEAKER_00: Oh, the re that's why it didn't have the bumpers of a 74, it doesn't have shaped handles, it didn't have bumpers because that vehicle we talked to the owner a little while ago, because that vehicle was uh actual, they did not change the bus design for those vehicles that were built in Brazil versus the Germans versus the German ones, so there are a lot more of those built, but they were cheaper.
- 14:48SPEAKER_04: Well, the cool thing is they look like the older ones, yeah.
- 14:51SPEAKER_00: Well, they because they were this, so nothing has changed in the design of that from the 60s.
- 14:56SPEAKER_02: Yeah, the gentleman that owns it is actually uh running coistry house, so he brought his vehicle at his time.
- 15:02SPEAKER_00: He's got a he's got a he's got a he's a VW bus collector.
- 15:05SPEAKER_00: That's cool, and then but you see what I'm saying?
- 15:07SPEAKER_00: When I when I what I'm saying about the curtains, oh yeah, what makes it see for me?
- 15:12SPEAKER_00: I look at things like that's a unique thing, yes, yeah.
- 15:16SPEAKER_00: When you look at buildings, don't you think of that?
- 15:18SPEAKER_02: Oh, yeah, sure.
- 15:19SPEAKER_02: Mike, what about and and and things that would enhance that's right?
- 15:23SPEAKER_04: If I'm gonna go look at a building, it's gotta have something special, right?
- 15:26SPEAKER_00: Right, yeah, because if if I'm gonna rent a space in a building, which I'm sure you deal with, right?
- 15:33SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I'm gonna look at a space in a building and think, okay, I'm gonna have people come and see me in my office.
- 15:40SPEAKER_00: But I mean, I'm gonna I I want to see the front door.
- 15:44SPEAKER_00: I want what are they gonna see when they come in?
- 15:47SPEAKER_00: Maybe it's because of my age, but I start to look at things like that.
- 15:50SPEAKER_04: I think it's a good idea.
- 15:56SPEAKER_00: Exactly.
- 15:57SPEAKER_00: You know who he reminds me of?
- 15:59SPEAKER_00: George Skelton.
- 16:01SPEAKER_00: Yeah, George, George Skelton is a friend of uh us and our our show.
- 16:06SPEAKER_00: And uh I went to I went to school all my school years with George.
- 16:11SPEAKER_00: Yeah, um, and uh he hasn't been feeling well lately and he's had some surgery and he always listens to the show.
- 16:17unknown: He's on the men.
- 16:18SPEAKER_04: Hi George.
- 16:19SPEAKER_00: Uh are you a Houstonian?
- 16:20SPEAKER_04: Yeah, oh yeah.
- 16:21SPEAKER_00: Do you remember the Metropolitan Theater downtown?
- 16:24SPEAKER_04: Sure.
- 16:25SPEAKER_00: His dad ran the Metropolitan Theater.
- 16:27SPEAKER_00: George worked there for a while back before the you know his the demise of it, but yeah, so you can relate.
- 16:34SPEAKER_00: Where did you go to high school?
- 16:35SPEAKER_04: Uh Abilene Cooper in Houston, Texas?
- 16:39SPEAKER_04: No, in Abilene, Abilene Cooper.
- 16:42SPEAKER_00: So when did you move here?
- 16:44SPEAKER_04: Uh 1977.
- 16:46SPEAKER_00: Oh but you you can get the yeah, the vibe.
- 16:51SPEAKER_00: Yeah, okay.
- 16:54SPEAKER_00: All right, well, you know, this is a car show, yeah, and we try to keep it in that venue.
- 16:59SPEAKER_04: Yeah, but we got off track, didn't we?
- 17:01SPEAKER_00: No, we didn't.
- 17:01SPEAKER_00: No, because because we always try to have something unique about this show, kind of like those curtains in the Brazilian or in your guest drinking margaritas Bloody Mary's today.
- 17:16SPEAKER_02: Cheers, I think.
- 17:17SPEAKER_04: Cheers.
- 17:17SPEAKER_02: Don't forget, always forgot.
- 17:19SPEAKER_02: Come on out here, yeah.
- 17:21SPEAKER_02: Toy, you get taco and Victoria Cag.
- 17:28SPEAKER_04: Oh, well, we didn't know that.

- 21:20SPEAKER_01: He came in 10th for the first time.
- 21:21SPEAKER_01: I like it.
- 21:22SPEAKER_01: Fernando.
- 21:22SPEAKER_01: So there you go with that.
- 21:24SPEAKER_01: We'll follow that next year.
- 21:26SPEAKER_01: What is it?
- 21:26SPEAKER_01: Very intimate.
- 21:27SPEAKER_00: What is the name of the song about Fernando?
- 21:29SPEAKER_01: I have no idea.
- 21:30SPEAKER_00: But ABBA?
- 21:32SPEAKER_00: Fernando?

- 21:41SPEAKER_00: People are fingering me.
- 21:43SPEAKER_00: I mean ABBA.
- 21:45SPEAKER_00: Fernando.
- 21:46SPEAKER_00: That's what I said.
- 21:48SPEAKER_00: She's trying to get well we want to we want to do the trop the trophy presentations 10 to 1015.
- 22:03SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 22:04SPEAKER_00: So for those of you that can hear it, can anybody hear us out there in the parking lot?
- 22:09SPEAKER_00: Can you hear us out there?
- 22:10SPEAKER_00: Can you hear us?
- 22:11SPEAKER_00: Can you hear us out there?
- 22:13SPEAKER_00: Sheila says she can't hear us out there.
- 22:16SPEAKER_00: David, can you fix that so she can hear us?
- 22:19SPEAKER_00: Hello on to Jeffrey, would you go out there and make sure that the back into this because you've got uh other things for the racing calendar?
- 22:27SPEAKER_00: All right, please do the racing calendar.
- 22:28SPEAKER_01: We have we've got some other things going on.
- 22:30SPEAKER_01: Did you know that there is a blind driver car rally?
- 22:33SPEAKER_01: That's coming up, and what you have is a uh a blind individual.
- 22:36SPEAKER_01: Wait a minute.
- 22:37SPEAKER_01: A blind individual drives the car, but they have a co-driver that tells them how to drive the circuit.
- 22:41SPEAKER_01: Then you got lawnmower racing, you got school bus racing, figure eight train racing.
- 22:47SPEAKER_01: How about that?
- 22:48SPEAKER_01: You got a trailer and you got to pull something around figure eight, swamp buggy racing, and then you got pig and Ford racing.
- 22:55SPEAKER_01: Check this out you are on uh you're on a tractor, you have to start the tractor and it's a circuit.
- 23:02SPEAKER_01: You pull up into the main straight, you have to get out, grab a pig out of a pen, hold on to that pig, and do a lap.
- 23:09SPEAKER_01: If you lose the pig, you have to start over.
- 23:12SPEAKER_01: So after one lap, you have to take the pig back and grab another pig.
- 23:15SPEAKER_01: You do three laps and you win.
- 23:17SPEAKER_00: Where is this?
- 23:19SPEAKER_00: In uh Pigeon Pig.
- 23:21SPEAKER_01: It is no, it's in Talmook County, Oregon.
- 23:24SPEAKER_01: It's in Oregon.
- 23:25SPEAKER_01: So that's what they do in Oregon.
- 23:30SPEAKER_01: I think we need to do that next time we come out here to Lupe.
- 23:34SPEAKER_01: We need to do that this afternoon.
- 23:36SPEAKER_01: Drinks.
- 23:37SPEAKER_01: No, no, no, no, no, no.
- 23:39SPEAKER_01: Put that down.
- 23:39SPEAKER_01: Put that down.
- 23:40SPEAKER_01: There you go.
- 23:41SPEAKER_01: All right.
- 23:41SPEAKER_01: So that's the racing calendar.
- 23:43SPEAKER_01: Thank you for that.
- 23:44SPEAKER_01: Back to you, Michael.
- 23:47SPEAKER_01: Michael, I would like to say next, isn't he?
- 23:50SPEAKER_00: Well, let's see.
- 23:51SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it's high now.
- 23:54SPEAKER_00: Well, the end of the time weekly auto history lesson.
- 23:58SPEAKER_00: Here comes my car.
- 24:00SPEAKER_03: Slowly but surely.
- 24:02SPEAKER_01: Do you need me to work something on that?
- 24:04SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I need to be doing this and that at the same time.
- 24:07SPEAKER_03: No, it's on this one.
- 24:08SPEAKER_03: It's on this one.
- 24:10SPEAKER_03: Can you see it?
- 24:11SPEAKER_03: No.
- 24:11SPEAKER_03: I'll work it.
- 24:13SPEAKER_03: All right.
- 24:14SPEAKER_03: So we're going to do this week in auto history.
- 24:18SPEAKER_03: It's over here.
- 24:20SPEAKER_03: Nope.
- 24:21SPEAKER_03: Scroll down.
- 24:23SPEAKER_03: So December the 8th, 1936.
- 24:25SPEAKER_03: We're going to go ahead and start while Jeff's catching up.
- 24:29SPEAKER_03: Pontiac introduces its 1937 model lineup.
- 24:32SPEAKER_03: Now, this is important because not only did they come out with some new streamlined bodies and integrated headlights, but they also had improved engines.
- 24:39SPEAKER_03: They had an inline six and a straight eight engine.
- 24:43SPEAKER_03: And while this was all a recovering economy, this is what helped boost Pontiac, but it also helped people coming out of the depression prior to World War II.
- 24:54SPEAKER_03: In 1958, Chrysler introduced the Wedge Head V8.
- 25:02SPEAKER_03: Chrysler the Wedge Head V8.
- 25:04SPEAKER_03: I'm going to leave it to you, Jeff.
- 25:05SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 25:05SPEAKER_03: They uh now this is the Wedge Heavy 8, and in 1958, and because it was lighter and simpler alternative to the complex Hemi designs.
- 25:13SPEAKER_03: So the Hemi head, the engines that were going on at the time, they wanted something simpler.
- 25:17SPEAKER_03: And this carried on into the sizes 361, 383, 413, and 440 may sound familiar because they produced them all the way up through the muscle car era, and it became the backbone of the muscle car era for Mopart.
- 25:32SPEAKER_03: They put in police packages, they had heavy-duty applications, and it was really cool looking under the hood because you had this cross-ram manifold with two fours on it.
- 25:42SPEAKER_03: 1953 Corvette enters full production.
- 25:46SPEAKER_03: So up until this time, the 300 Corvettes that had been built were all built by hand, and it made it uh hard to scale things up and to really sell it, but by pushing it into the mass production model, it got it to where they could make enough of them that they could actually pay for them and sell them well enough to ensure the model's survival and evolution.
- 26:08SPEAKER_03: And actually ended up since the first ones were all six cylinders, they actually became into the V8s, and actually that's what helped push the Corvette into the status as America's longest running sports car.
- 26:20SPEAKER_03: 1983, the film Christine was released.
- 26:23SPEAKER_03: Oh, yeah.
- 26:23SPEAKER_03: This was John Carpenter's film about a shy teenager, Arnie who becomes obsessed with a sinister 1958 Plymouth Fury that he restores.
- 26:33SPEAKER_03: Now he really got in tight with Christine.
- 26:35SPEAKER_03: She started hammering on him, displaying a violent, possessive personality, just like any other teenage girl would do for a teenage boy, eliminating anyone who threatened their connection.
- 26:46SPEAKER_03: So this movie blended supernatural horror with muscle car culture, and uh really had some practical effects that made the self-repairing fury uh an iconic on-screen vehicle, you know, because it would fix itself the way they did it.
- 26:59SPEAKER_03: Yeah, it was done really, really well.
- 27:01SPEAKER_01: Yeah, they did the filming in reverse.
- 27:03SPEAKER_01: When they didn't know, I guess that's what they did.
- 27:05SPEAKER_01: They did filming in reverse.
- 27:06SPEAKER_03: 1994 production ends on the Dodge Spirit, Plymouth Acclaim, and the Chrysler LeBaron.
- 27:12SPEAKER_03: One second of uh silence for that.
- 27:14SPEAKER_01: Kathy had a 94-4 Taurus SHO petty blue, gray interior.
- 27:18SPEAKER_01: It was an awesome car.
- 27:20unknown: Cool.
- 27:21SPEAKER_03: 1997 Toyota launches the first Prius.
- 27:25SPEAKER_03: Now, this was the first generation, it was actually launched in Japan.
- 27:29SPEAKER_03: And uh they got it and they built it into uh something that they could bring into the United States, and it was the first compact sedan to use a gasoline electric powertrain design, improved fuel economy, and it put Toyota into the position of a global leader in hybrid technology, which that car is still produced today.
- 27:47SPEAKER_03: Of course, it's got a lot of technology advances, but it's still the hybrid to chase after if you're looking for a small compact sedan hybrid.
- 27:55SPEAKER_03: Yep, there you go.
- 27:55SPEAKER_03: And that's this week in automotive history.
- 27:57SPEAKER_03: Thank you for that, Michael.
- 28:01SPEAKER_03: And what do we got next?
- 28:03SPEAKER_03: Headlines, yes, headlines.
- 28:07SPEAKER_00: Headlines, ladies and gentlemen, bankrupt sub-prime auto dealer Tricolor.
- 28:13SPEAKER_00: Uh-oh.
- 28:14SPEAKER_00: Tricolor Holdings is preparing to sue the company's founder, who the trustee alleges was at the center of a massive fraud that led to the company's collapse into bankruptcy, according to a court filing.
- 28:26SPEAKER_00: Daniel Chu is already facing probes by the Justice Department and the Securities and Exchange Commission.
- 28:34SPEAKER_00: Tri-Cultur's bankruptcy trustee said in the filing in federal court in Dallas, Texas.
- 28:38SPEAKER_00: The trustee said that it expects to file a so-called adversary complaint against Chew by the end of the month.
- 28:46SPEAKER_00: Tri-Cutter filed for bankruptcy in September after shutting down more than 60 locations across the U.S.
- 28:55SPEAKER_00: Southwest.
- 28:56SPEAKER_00: A preliminary examination of Tri-Cutter's records showed that at least 29,000.
- 29:01SPEAKER_00: Get this listen.
- 29:03SPEAKER_00: 29,000 loans pledged to creditors retired to vehicles already securing other debts.
- 29:10SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 29:11SPEAKER_00: What a what a federal investigators are also looking into whether Tricolor pledged the same collateral to different creditors.
- 29:19SPEAKER_00: Cheaters go to jail.
- 29:21SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 29:22SPEAKER_00: Just amazing.
- 29:24SPEAKER_00: Listen, a lot of people here in Houston got royally screwed.
- 29:29SPEAKER_00: Yes, absolutely.
- 29:30SPEAKER_00: Got their cars confiscated, the whole comedy is just bad.
- 29:33SPEAKER_01: Well, they put them in for service, they can't get them out.
- 29:35SPEAKER_00: Yep.
- 29:36SPEAKER_00: Yeah, no, it's over.
