- 0:10Welcome back to Randy Unscripted.
- 0:12I'm Randy Black, and this episode is part of my napod promo series. That's national podcast post month where I'm challenging myself to create a new episode every single day in November.
- 0:2230 episodes
- 0:24in thirty days. Lots of podcasters out there taking part. Go out, search for napod po m o, n a p o d p o m o, and see what you can find to go along with it. I wanna kick this episode off, with a little clip from one of my other podcasts called shooting it straight, and it goes like this. in thirty days. Lots of podcasters out there taking part. Go out, search for napod po m o, n a p o d p o m o, and see what you can find to go along with it. I wanna kick this episode off, with a little clip from one of my other podcasts called shooting it straight, and it goes like this. And you can't have really great success
- 0:44Unknown: without some form of or many forms of failure. Do remember my fortune cookie? Oh, yeah. Failure is feedback, and feedback is the breakfast of champions. That's right. That's exactly right. But see, in today's world,
- 0:57see, in the old school world, the dinosaur world where I grew up,
- 1:02that's how people learn. In today's world, it's kind of opposite
- 1:06because kids think failure
- 1:09is like, oh my gosh. They don't know you're gonna learn from it. Everything's based like it.
- 1:15Randy Black: This episode started several years ago in one of the most unexpected places you could imagine. It was a Chinese restaurant.
- 1:24I just finished eating a plate of General Tso's chicken, one of my absolute favorites.
- 1:30And as the meal wraps up, the server
- 1:32brings out the fortune cookies along with the check.
- 1:35You know, those little fortune cookies, they're folded. They usually have something silly inside like, you will take a pleasant journey soon or your lucky numbers are.
- 1:45But this one,
- 1:47this one stopped me in my tracks.
- 1:49As you just heard in the clip, it said,
- 1:52failure is feedback,
- 1:54and feedback
- 1:56is the breakfast of champions.
- 1:58I still have a picture
- 2:00of that fortune cookie saved on my phone, and I'll include it in the show notes for this episode.
- 2:04You can actually even go to Randall Black dot com where this podcast is hosted, and it's on the main page in the hero section.
- 2:12Something about this fortune cookie
- 2:15struck me
- 2:16as being so powerful,
- 2:19maybe even
- 2:20extremely profound.
- 2:22And in in in just those few short little words,
- 2:26it changed things for me.
- 2:28You see, most of us, we're taught from a young age to fear failure.
- 2:33We're taught to avoid mistakes.
- 2:36We're taught to get it right the first time.
- 2:40But life doesn't really work that way, does it?
- 2:43As an educator and as someone who works with technology,
- 2:46I've seen time and time again
- 2:49that the best learning doesn't happen
- 2:52when everything goes perfectly.
- 2:54It happens when something breaks,
- 2:56when we mess up, when things don't go as planned,
- 2:59because that's when we stop and ask,
- 3:01okay.
- 3:03What happened here?
- 3:05That moment,
- 3:07that reflection,
- 3:10that's feedback.
- 3:15And that feedback
- 3:18is exactly what helps us grow.
- 3:21Think about the athletes
- 3:23who practice day after day.
- 3:25They fail
- 3:27constantly,
- 3:28missed shots,
- 3:30dropped passes,
- 3:32false starts,
- 3:34but they also have coaches
- 3:36giving them constant feedback, pointing out what worked,
- 3:40what didn't,
- 3:41and how to adjust.
- 3:45That's why this fortune
- 3:47says
- 3:48feedback is the breakfast of champions.
- 3:52It's nourishment.
- 3:53It's fuel.
- 3:55It gives us what we need to become better
- 3:58than what we were yesterday.
- 4:00But here's the thing.
- 4:03Champions
- 4:04don't just receive feedback.
- 4:07They embrace it.
- 4:09They even go looking for it
- 4:11because they know
- 4:13every failure
- 4:15is simply data.
- 4:17It's a clue about how to improve for the next time.
- 4:21When I think about this in my own life, whether it's teaching a lesson that didn't land with the with the students,
- 4:27recording a podcast that
- 4:30the flow
- 4:32didn't go the way I hoped,
- 4:34or working through a project that just goes sideways and loses focus.
- 4:40Each of those moments have offered
- 4:42valuable feedback.
- 4:45The same goes for my work in educational technology. Sometimes a new system rollout
- 4:50does not go as planned
- 4:52or a tool
- 4:54that I thought and our team had thought would make things easier ends up creating
- 4:59more confusion than it does clarity.
- 5:03But even then, those moments show me what needs to change.
- 5:08They help me understand the real needs of the teachers and the students and how I can do better next time.
- 5:15It's not always fun.
- 5:17In fact,
- 5:18most of the time it stings. It hurts.
- 5:22But if I could look at it objectively,
- 5:24step back, and say, what can I learn from this?
- 5:28Then
- 5:29that that so called failure
- 5:31turns into a stepping stone.
- 5:34So maybe failure isn't the opposite of success after all.
- 5:39Maybe it's just
- 5:40part of the same road as you heard Jim talk about in that clip.
- 5:44So today,
- 5:46I wanna leave you with this very simple thought.
- 5:50Don't fear failure.
- 5:53Feed on it.
- 5:54Let it sharpen you.
- 5:56Let it strengthen you,
- 5:58and let it guide you toward where you are meant to go.
- 6:03Remember that little fortune,
- 6:05failure is feedback,
- 6:08and feedback is the breakfast of champions.
- 6:10So grab your plate and dig in.
- 6:14This has been another episode of Randy unscripted as part of my napod promo series for national podcast post month. Thank you for joining me on this Jersey journey
- 6:24one episode,
- 6:26one day, one reflection at a time. And until next time,
- 6:30keep learning,
- 6:32stay curious,
- 6:33and I'll catch you the next time that I'm unscripted.
- 6:37Failure is feedback, and feedback is the breakfast of champions.
