Transcript
- 0:07Speaker 1: Hey, everybody. Emily Abadie here. You are listening to 5-Minute
- 0:23Speaker 1: Friday on Hurtle.
- 0:24Speaker 2: Y'all, the world tour just for now. is about to
- 0:32Speaker 2: come to an end.
- 0:32Speaker 1: I am coming home on Monday and although Australia has
- 0:37Speaker 1: been absolutely wild, I'm so grateful for the time that
- 0:40Speaker 1: I've had here.
- 0:43Speaker 2: Your girl is ready. Your girl is ready to be
- 0:45Speaker 2: in her own space. She's ready for her own bed.
- 0:46Speaker 1: She's ready for a washer dryer that she can use
- 0:50Speaker 1: her favorite Tide detergent in. She's ready to be able
- 0:54Speaker 1: to stroll to the bodega to see her people. Oh
- 0:58Speaker 1: my God, I'm so excited to spend time with my friends. Yeah,
- 1:02Speaker 1: I'm just ready to be in my own space again.
- 1:04Speaker 1: And I'm also simultaneously feeling so grateful for this time.
- 1:10Speaker 1: A big theme for me out here this month has
- 1:13Speaker 1: been saying yes. And also going out of my way
- 1:19Speaker 1: to be present in the surroundings that I'm in. When
- 1:23Speaker 1: I was in Bondi over the last week, I... joined
- 1:29Speaker 1: a gym that was near my hotel. And at the gym,
- 1:33Speaker 1: I wouldn't say I made friends, but I would see
- 1:37Speaker 1: the same people day in and day out.
- 1:39Speaker 2: And they would say hi to me and everyone was
- 1:41Speaker 2: so friendly.
- 1:41Speaker 1: And also just like sitting at cafes, the hotel that
- 1:47Speaker 1: I stayed at was called QT Bondi. And it was
- 1:50Speaker 1: also above this.
- 1:53Speaker 2: Really, is it called common space, common ground? Yeah. Common Space,
- 1:58Speaker 2: I think. Of course, now I'm going to get this wrong.
- 2:01Speaker 1: But it's above this cafe that can only be described
- 2:04Speaker 1: as like the Air One of.
- 2:07Speaker 2: Air One of Common Supply. It's called Common Supply. The
- 2:11Speaker 2: Air One of... Bondi, like 100%.
- 2:15Speaker 1: It has smoothies and avocado toasts and really delicious bowls
- 2:19Speaker 1: and then an entire area that you could shop and
- 2:22Speaker 1: buy super organic and trendy snacks and stuff like that,
- 2:26Speaker 1: and matchas and coffees and you get the idea. And
- 2:30Speaker 1: in there, I wanted to do work on my computer
- 2:33Speaker 1: and they had Wi-Fi in there, but no one that
- 2:36Speaker 1: worked at Common Supply knew the name, the password of
- 2:40Speaker 1: For the Wi-Fi, even though it existed. And so a
- 2:43Speaker 1: man there like, let me use his hotspot, which was
- 2:46Speaker 1: so kind. There's a reason why I'm telling you all this.
- 2:49Speaker 1: In my quest to say yes, I also accepted an
- 2:54Speaker 1: invitation from a new friend, Lydia O'Donnell. She's a run
- 2:59Speaker 1: coach for Nike out in Australia. She's also the co-founder
- 3:02Speaker 1: of an app called Femi, which I will link in
- 3:05Speaker 1: the show notes.
- 3:06Speaker 2: But.
- 3:07Speaker 1: Lydia invited me to come stay with her for a
- 3:09Speaker 1: couple of nights up in a town called Noosa. It's
- 3:13Speaker 1: about an hour and a half north of Sydney via
- 3:17Speaker 1: plane on the Sunshine Coast. And there were so many
- 3:20Speaker 1: reasons why I could have said no. I don't know
- 3:23Speaker 1: her that well at all. We've literally only met on
- 3:25Speaker 1: the internet. I was a little nervous because I knew
- 3:29Speaker 1: that going to visit her meant lots of really fun
- 3:32Speaker 1: running opportunities and trails.
- 3:34Speaker 2: But I also know that she.
- 3:36Speaker 1: is literally running 20 kilometers on trails multiple times a
- 3:40Speaker 1: week and I'm.
- 3:41Speaker 2: Coming off of a marathon. Yeah. There was just a
- 3:43Speaker 2: lot of reasons why maybe I wasn't going to do it.
- 3:47Speaker 2: And I kind of just sat there. I made this
- 3:50Speaker 2: plan while I... Where was I?
- 3:52Speaker 1: I said yes when I was in Fiji and I
- 3:55Speaker 1: booked a flight and I said, why not now? You
- 3:59Speaker 1: are literally on the other side of the world And
- 4:02Speaker 1: this great human being is welcoming you into her space.
- 4:07Speaker 2: What's the worst?
- 4:08Speaker 1: I mean, I'm sure there's a lot of frightening things
- 4:10Speaker 1: that could happen in a bad situation. This was not
- 4:13Speaker 1: a bad situation. We had the best time. Me, her,
- 4:17Speaker 1: her dog, Rafiki. I drove on the left side of
- 4:19Speaker 1: the road for the first time. We had absolutely delicious
- 4:23Speaker 1: cocktails and we did a ton of trail running. I
- 4:25Speaker 1: probably went on one of the top three runs of
- 4:28Speaker 1: my life in a national park there. I was blown
- 4:33Speaker 1: away by the views, her hospitality, and just how grateful
- 4:38Speaker 1: I felt for the opportunity to do this, to try
- 4:41Speaker 1: new things, to be out in the world. And I
- 4:44Speaker 1: feel like I'm bringing that level of awareness with me
- 4:48Speaker 1: as I go home on Monday. I'm bringing this willingness
- 4:53Speaker 1: to say yes. I'm bringing this openness. I'm bringing this, like,
- 4:59Speaker 1: it doesn't need to be that serious mentality. We only
- 5:04Speaker 1: get to do this once. We only get to do
- 5:08Speaker 1: this once. And this trip has been so fun. And
- 5:12Speaker 1: it has reminded me of the importance of play, of
- 5:16Speaker 1: the importance of just going for it, of the importance
- 5:19Speaker 1: of saying yes. And for that, I'm really, really grateful
- 5:22Speaker 1: that And also again, like shout out to Lids.
- 5:25Speaker 2: She's the best.
- 5:26Speaker 1: I'm going to link her profile in the show notes
- 5:29Speaker 1: as well because she's just such an inspiring person to
- 5:33Speaker 1: follow and such a good human. I also, I can't
- 5:36Speaker 1: believe I didn't realize this until this trip when I
- 5:39Speaker 1: was up there and she was telling me that when
- 5:41Speaker 1: the Olympics are in Australia in 2032. So I literally
- 5:45Speaker 1: like looked at her dog before I left and I
- 5:47Speaker 1: was like, I will see you in five, six.
- 5:51Speaker 2: Six years, buddy.
- 5:53Speaker 1: When the Olympics are here in 2032, they're going to
- 5:55Speaker 1: be in Brisbane. And she told me that the marathon
- 6:00Speaker 1: is actually going to be in the Sunshine Coast, up
- 6:04Speaker 1: very close to where she lives. So I'm going to
- 6:08Speaker 1: be back, y'all. That's basically what I'm saying. Yeah, a
- 6:12Speaker 1: lot of gratitude coming from me and a little fresh
- 6:16Speaker 1: perspective that I'm bringing back to... New York City, baby.
- 6:21Speaker 1: I'm coming for you, Brooklyn. My prompt for you this week.
- 6:26Speaker 1: Is there something that maybe you should just do?
- 6:29Speaker 2: Not to be ironic.
- 6:30Speaker 1: I mean, I'm here this weekend for the After Dark
- 6:33Speaker 1: tour here in Sydney. That's Nike's women's race. I'll also
- 6:37Speaker 1: be running that in Los Angeles. But, you know, the saying,
- 6:40Speaker 1: just do it. Is there something that you should just say?
- 6:43Speaker 2: Why not now? I'm curious. Have you been standing in
- 6:46Speaker 2: your own way? Let me know. Let me know what's up.
- 6:50Speaker 1: Uh, now I have a listener question from Christine. Christine
- 6:58Speaker 1: wants to know, here we go. Hey, Emily, longtime hurdler
- 7:02Speaker 1: and occasional five minute Friday question submitter.
- 7:06Speaker 2: We love you.
- 7:06Speaker 1: If you have a question for five minute Friday, I
- 7:08Speaker 1: want to hear it. So you can DM me, you
- 7:10Speaker 1: can email me, you can hit me up at hurdle podcast.
- 7:13Speaker 1: And again, that email is hello at hurdle.us. Curious about
- 7:17Speaker 1: your book reading habits. Are you an Audible reader, listener,
- 7:21Speaker 1: a Kindle reader, or real books or all of the above?
- 7:24Speaker 1: What works best for you in which environment and any
- 7:26Speaker 1: great book recommendations for Audible versus Kindle or hard copy?
- 7:29Speaker 2: Thanks so much, Chris. Okay.
- 7:31Speaker 1: This is a good question. So a dear friend of
- 7:34Speaker 1: mine gave me a Kindle about a year ago, maybe
- 7:37Speaker 1: a little over a year ago. And I love reading
- 7:40Speaker 1: on the Kindle. It could not be more convenient, especially
- 7:43Speaker 1: when I'm traveling and I can go through a number
- 7:46Speaker 1: of books and I don't need to be bringing the
- 7:47Speaker 1: actual book. I have one physical book with me. It's
- 7:50Speaker 1: a galley of dying to run by Matt Fitzgerald. I
- 7:54Speaker 1: haven't even read that book because it's so much easier
- 7:57Speaker 1: for me to tuck my Kindle into my purse and
- 8:00Speaker 1: bring it with me out to dinner or wherever that
- 8:03Speaker 1: I'm going. So for me, I'm really on team Kindle.
- 8:07Speaker 1: Now I do love a physical book. You know that
- 8:10Speaker 1: my setup at home, especially in the office is a,
- 8:12Speaker 1: massive bookshelf. I love having them to reference and I
- 8:15Speaker 1: like to write in them as well when I'm reading them.
- 8:18Speaker 2: So I would say in New York City, I'd love
- 8:20Speaker 2: a book.
- 8:20Speaker 1: But in the meantime, it's just a little bit easier
- 8:25Speaker 1: to download things, get them on the Kindle.
- 8:27Speaker 2: I don't need to.
- 8:28Speaker 1: Be as decisive before I go somewhere. So I'm a
- 8:33Speaker 1: little bit of both. It's kind of how I feel
- 8:35Speaker 1: about print media.
- 8:36Speaker 2: I love a magazine. I love a newspaper.
- 8:39Speaker 1: But in this day and age, It's a little bit
- 8:43Speaker 1: easier to sometimes just scroll and read things online. I'm
- 8:47Speaker 1: curious what y'all are up to. Are you Kindle readers?
- 8:51Speaker 1: Do you read on your iPad? Do you like real books? Like,
- 8:54Speaker 1: what's the deal?
- 8:55Speaker 2: Let me know. DM me. Give me the lowdown.
- 8:58Speaker 1: Also, shout out, when I got my Kindle, my stepsister
- 9:01Speaker 1: Megan was constantly sending me books. And I would say
- 9:03Speaker 1: that that was also really helpful because she would just
- 9:07Speaker 1: upload them to my account and I didn't even need
- 9:09Speaker 1: to think about it.
- 9:10Speaker 2: So I was just reading whatever she told me to.
- 9:12Speaker 1: And this is also part of the reason why I
- 9:14Speaker 1: really got into fiction books over the.
- 9:18Speaker 2: Last year and a half.
- 9:19Speaker 1: I had been in this, gosh, in the pandemic, I
- 9:23Speaker 1: got really into self-help books and I got really tired
- 9:25Speaker 1: of feeling like every time I wanted to pick up
- 9:27Speaker 1: a book, I needed to like improve myself. And so
- 9:31Speaker 1: over the last year or two, I've gotten really into
- 9:33Speaker 1: reading fiction books and it has been such a gift.
- 9:36Speaker 1: Right now I'm reading two books. I'm reading The Calamity
- 9:39Speaker 1: Club and then I'm opening my phone to look at
- 9:42Speaker 1: the title exactly of the other one. I'm reading, oh,
- 9:46Speaker 1: Serena Kerrigan's book, Let's Effing Date. I think it's, I'm
- 9:51Speaker 1: only like 25 pages in and I can tell you
- 9:53Speaker 1: that I will probably read this book in maybe about
- 9:56Speaker 1: an hour and a half or two hours front to
- 9:58Speaker 1: back on the plane ride home.
- 10:02Speaker 2: That's it for now, y'all.
- 10:04Speaker 1: You know the drill over at Hurdle Podcast at Emily
