- 0:00Speaker 1: It's Wayne Dan studio with the boys.
- 0:01Speaker 2: Dan and say, how.
- 0:02Speaker 1: Y'all doing good to see you, brother, what's happening to
- 0:04Speaker 1: see you? I haven't seen y'all since Award season. Things
- 0:06Speaker 1: slowing down, How you're feeling about the rest of the year.
- 0:08Speaker 3: Chewing out a little bit? I overdressed Nashville is like
- 0:11Speaker 3: the weather's been nuts, Dude. One day it's ten degrees,
- 0:13Speaker 3: the next day it's seventy degrees.
- 0:15Speaker 1: See, I thought maybe you went like GQ.
- 0:18Speaker 4: I'm trying. I'm just trying to keep it because.
- 0:20Speaker 1: To be funny, when I saw y'all at CFAs about
- 0:23Speaker 1: you're like, look, he's making fun of how we're dressing.
- 0:27Speaker 5: Well, I wasn't gonna make fun of your shirt. I
- 0:29Speaker 5: think your shirt it's cool no matter what Dan thinks
- 0:31Speaker 5: about it, you know what I mean?
- 0:32Speaker 6: I think that's I think.
- 0:32Speaker 1: They have that like judgment, so like, oh you wore
- 0:35Speaker 1: that today?
- 0:35Speaker 4: Are you getting changed for the interview? Now cameras, this
- 0:39Speaker 4: isn't on camera.
- 0:40Speaker 6: You just say this is audio for you either, this
- 0:43Speaker 6: is great.
- 0:45Speaker 1: How how do you approach award season? Is how those
- 0:49Speaker 1: things wrap up? Like, cause it's there's a lot of
- 0:51Speaker 1: stress going into it and then once the amaze that's
- 0:53Speaker 1: kind of like the end of the year.
- 0:55Speaker 6: It feels like right it is, man.
- 0:56Speaker 5: You know, I feel like at this point in our career,
- 0:59Speaker 5: you know, we've been blessed enough to have you know,
- 1:01Speaker 5: won every award that we can win in our in
- 1:03Speaker 5: our genre for you know, being up for something, and you.
- 1:06Speaker 2: Try to get to that place where it's like, all right, just.
- 1:08Speaker 5: To be you know, nominated is an honor, and we
- 1:11Speaker 5: really are in that place. I think for every artist
- 1:13Speaker 5: would be lying if you said that going into it,
- 1:15Speaker 5: it isn't just anxiety or ridden and like there's just
- 1:19Speaker 5: so much pressure because you love all the people in
- 1:21Speaker 5: your category. Those are your friends, and so it's really
- 1:23Speaker 5: tough when you kind of go into that moment. And
- 1:26Speaker 5: even if you're just like all right, you know, if
- 1:29Speaker 5: you're you're okay with just being nominated, it stinks because
- 1:31Speaker 5: you go in there and you're like, all right, somebody's
- 1:33Speaker 5: gonna be a winner and someone's gonna be a loser tonight,
- 1:35Speaker 5: and it's just it's tough. Man. I feel like every
- 1:38Speaker 5: artist struggles with it, but we really have gotten to
- 1:40Speaker 5: a place that's what makes it great about being in
- 1:42Speaker 5: a duo.
- 1:43Speaker 6: We always talk about this.
- 1:44Speaker 5: You know, the highs are even higher and the lows
- 1:45Speaker 5: aren't as low, and we're really able to kind of
- 1:47Speaker 5: remind each other like, hey, this, it really is amazing
- 1:49Speaker 5: that we get to do this, and you know, we
- 1:51Speaker 5: can kind of remind each other. It's probably a lot
- 1:53Speaker 5: tougher for a lot of the solo acts, who are
- 1:55Speaker 5: just kind of there by themselves with the smiles, like I'm.
- 1:57Speaker 2: So happy that I didn't win, But no, I feel
- 2:02Speaker 2: like it's.
- 2:02Speaker 6: You know, I feel like it is very uh, it's stressful, but.
- 2:06Speaker 5: At the same time, it is one of the only
- 2:07Speaker 5: times in the year that you get to see everybody,
- 2:09Speaker 5: and it really is just kind of a family affair,
- 2:12Speaker 5: and we really have gotten to that place in our
- 2:14Speaker 5: career where it's like, man, we are we really are
- 2:16Speaker 5: lucky to still be doing this and to be able
- 2:19Speaker 5: to still be invited. There was a time when we
- 2:21Speaker 5: we weren't invited, and so to kind of go back
- 2:23Speaker 5: to that place and be like, you know what, this
- 2:24Speaker 5: is pretty amazing that we get to be a part
- 2:26Speaker 5: of such an incredible thing.
- 2:27Speaker 1: Although I'm surprised it didn't go viral. I did notice
- 2:31Speaker 1: Dan Lean over to you when Brooks and done one
- 2:34Speaker 1: and I'm a great lip reader. Move aside, Grandpa, is
- 2:37Speaker 1: what you said?
- 2:38Speaker 4: Hey, you gotta get your glasses checked. Me go.
- 2:42Speaker 3: We have some like potentially viral moments at that award show.
- 2:45Speaker 3: There's a funny moment we're sitting there. Luke Combs is
- 2:48Speaker 3: performing Ain't No Love in Oklahoma, which could just goes
- 2:50Speaker 3: so hard, you know, and Bailey Zimmerman was like walking
- 2:53Speaker 3: you know, you know, he's such like a ball of
- 2:55Speaker 3: energy's so positive, so happy to be there. And he's
- 2:57Speaker 3: walking past our seats and they're like, all right, and
- 3:00Speaker 3: second's ten seconds. You know how they usher everybody and
- 3:01Speaker 3: they get the seed fillers in there. I was like,
- 3:03Speaker 3: you're not gonna make it, dude, You're not gonna make it.
- 3:05Speaker 3: The camera's right there. Peyton Manning, Luke, Bryan Laney Wilson
- 3:08Speaker 3: are like and up next with the song from the
- 3:10Speaker 3: Twisters soundtrack, Luke Combs, and I was like, sit dout,
- 3:13Speaker 3: sit on getting my aisle. He sat on my lap
- 3:15Speaker 3: and we're just going absolutely bananas. When Luke comes doing
- 3:18Speaker 3: a No Love in Oklahoma, the camera was on us
- 3:21Speaker 3: the whole time. I didn't watch the playback, but like
- 3:23Speaker 3: if I'm that switcher guy backstage doing the camera, I'm like,
- 3:25Speaker 3: I'm keeping it on Dan and Billy's and the whole
- 3:27Speaker 3: time it looked ridiculous like father and son vibes, you
- 3:30Speaker 3: know what I'm saying, Like, yeah, I told you this
- 3:33Speaker 3: guy's good.
- 3:33Speaker 6: You know it was.
- 3:34Speaker 2: It was crazy because they also like those people.
- 3:36Speaker 5: Are obviously they have a job to do it, like
- 3:38Speaker 5: when they're in the aisles, they're pretty aggressive with like
- 3:41Speaker 5: shoving people out of the way. And right before that,
- 3:43Speaker 5: like whenever Laney and them were announcing it, they had
- 3:46Speaker 5: this like fan blowing on them to announce it, you know,
- 3:48Speaker 5: like the whole you know play on words.
- 3:50Speaker 4: Like a spinning fan, not like a fan.
- 3:56Speaker 2: It was an actual like blowing fan.
- 3:57Speaker 5: And it's like, you know, they're trying to make it
- 3:59Speaker 5: where it looks like they're in the storm and all
- 4:00Speaker 5: this stuff. And so they they all but shoved Bailey aside,
- 4:04Speaker 5: and he got there was no option but to sit
- 4:06Speaker 5: on Dan's left because the camera was taking up most
- 4:08Speaker 5: of the aisle. And I was like, man, the lady,
- 4:11Speaker 5: I thought she was going to shoot somebody. She was
- 4:13Speaker 5: very angry with who she didn't realize that whoever it was,
- 4:16Speaker 5: she was just like.
- 4:17Speaker 1: You gotta move, you gotta move.
- 4:19Speaker 5: We got three seconds and I was like, oh my gosh,
- 4:21Speaker 5: it was it was. It was a wild, uh wild
- 4:23Speaker 5: thirty seconds there.
- 4:24Speaker 1: You guys, you look at a show like that, and
- 4:26Speaker 1: it evolves over the years, especially with I feel like
- 4:29Speaker 1: over the last two years it's been and obviously social
- 4:31Speaker 1: media has been a large help. The rush of new
- 4:35Speaker 1: artists and new songs is like stronger than ever. What's
- 4:38Speaker 1: that like for you guys who have who have done
- 4:41Speaker 1: what you do at such a high level for so long.
- 4:43Speaker 1: What's it like to see where country was when you
- 4:46Speaker 1: got here to where it is now?
- 4:49Speaker 4: It's cool, man, Honestly, I think it's evolved a lot.
- 4:51Speaker 3: There's like it's gone through a crazy roller coaster revolution
- 4:54Speaker 3: of different sounds. It's been more pop leaning, it's been
- 4:57Speaker 3: more country leaning, and now I feel like the door
- 4:59Speaker 3: is why open for stuff that's as you know, country
- 5:02Speaker 3: and his cowboys Cody Johnson or Parker McCollum, who are
- 5:05Speaker 3: good friends of ours, you know. And then you've still
- 5:06Speaker 3: got guys like Bailey Zimmer and pushing the envelope, Sam
- 5:09Speaker 3: Hunt and I feel like when we came onto the scene,
- 5:12Speaker 3: you know, twenty thirteen, twenty fourteen, our sound was pretty progressive,
- 5:17Speaker 3: but I feel like being a part of that movement
- 5:19Speaker 3: that kind of broke some doors down, you know, introduced people.
- 5:21Speaker 3: We had some songs that were grateful for it, crossed
- 5:24Speaker 3: over to different genres.
- 5:25Speaker 4: How they see Top forty, you know.
- 5:26Speaker 3: Songs that started at country, Tequila, Speechless, you know those
- 5:30Speaker 3: tunes ten thousand hours with Bieber. I feel like we're
- 5:33Speaker 3: the start of bringing people in from other genres. You know,
- 5:35Speaker 3: Shania Twain's done it in the past, Garth Brooks has
- 5:37Speaker 3: done it in the past, and you know, now Morgan's
- 5:39Speaker 3: doing it. You know, his songs are all over Top
- 5:41Speaker 3: forty radio. And the coolest compliment we could get from
- 5:44Speaker 3: somebody out there on the road is like, yo, man,
- 5:46Speaker 3: I never listened to country before, but I was listening
- 5:48Speaker 3: to you know, whatever station, Kids FM, and I heard
- 5:50Speaker 3: Dan and Shay on there, and I now I got
- 5:52Speaker 3: country program in my car. And that's cool because there's
- 5:54Speaker 3: just so much good country music to be discovered now,
- 5:56Speaker 3: more than ever, especially with streaming, you know, more genre
- 5:59Speaker 3: or more artists coming into the scene every single day.
- 6:02Speaker 3: I can't even keep up with it. It's nuts, even
- 6:04Speaker 3: on our own record label, you know. I asked my wife,
- 6:05Speaker 3: I'm like, can you name ten percent of these artists?
- 6:07Speaker 5: It's wild.
- 6:08Speaker 3: But it's a good thing, man, it's a good thing.
- 6:10Speaker 3: People are making great music out there. Touring is bigger
- 6:13Speaker 3: than ever. I feel like there's more country headliners. I
- 6:15Speaker 3: was talking about this with somebody last night.
- 6:17Speaker 4: I was like, there are so.
- 6:18Speaker 3: Many arena, amphitheater, and now stadium level country headliners.
- 6:23Speaker 4: It's it's insane.
- 6:24Speaker 1: You know.
- 6:25Speaker 4: The fan base is just huge.
- 6:27Speaker 1: As you see that the stadium thing coming to play
- 6:31Speaker 1: because arenas, like country lived in arenas and really up
- 6:34Speaker 1: until the last few years like that became garth. Did
- 6:37Speaker 1: you know the big the massive venues. Does that open
- 6:42Speaker 1: up goals that maybe you guys didn't have at some point,
- 6:44Speaker 1: like hey, what if what if you know we put
- 6:46Speaker 1: something together and made a swing at some of those
- 6:50Speaker 1: type of venues at some point.
- 6:51Speaker 6: Absolutely, I think every artist does.
- 6:53Speaker 5: I think in the beginning, I think my goals were
- 6:56Speaker 5: so much smaller than they are now. They start out
- 6:59Speaker 5: like our dream was to be able to play like
- 7:02Speaker 5: a thousand caps, Like growing up, mine was like, you know,
- 7:05Speaker 5: George's Majestic Lounge in Fayeville, Arkansas. It was like, man,
- 7:09Speaker 5: whoever's playing there, they're the biggest artists in the world,
- 7:12Speaker 5: you know, And it was like, I think that was
- 7:14Speaker 5: kind of my goal. You know, my favorite bands were
- 7:16Speaker 5: all playing these five hundred caps two fifty caps, and
- 7:19Speaker 5: I feel like, as you, you know, progress in your career,
- 7:21Speaker 5: we were just blown away that we were able to
- 7:23Speaker 5: have anyone come to our shows. And I think that
- 7:25Speaker 5: as you go along in your career and you have,
- 7:28Speaker 5: we've never had this like, oh we've got.
- 7:30Speaker 2: To get to stadiums or we've been a failure.
- 7:32Speaker 5: I think though, as you've you reached those goals, there's
- 7:35Speaker 5: a natural I always say to be content but not complacent,
- 7:38Speaker 5: Like I'm very happy and you know with the way
- 7:41Speaker 5: our career has gone and the things we've gotten to do,
- 7:44Speaker 5: but I think you always kind of have to look
- 7:45Speaker 5: ahead and be like, you know what, what can we
- 7:48Speaker 5: set our sights on next?
- 7:49Speaker 6: In a healthy way.
- 7:50Speaker 5: In the past, we've we've done that in an unhealthy
- 7:52Speaker 5: way where it's like you set these goals and these
- 7:54Speaker 5: expectations and then if you don't meet them, you know,
- 7:57Speaker 5: your happiness is, you know, you feel like you're not
- 7:59Speaker 5: happy with your I think that we have fully kind
- 8:02Speaker 5: of changed our perspective on that, and you know, give
- 8:04Speaker 5: you know, enjoy what life gives you and the opportunities
- 8:07Speaker 5: that you're given. We definitely have our our sights on
- 8:10Speaker 5: bigger things, you know. I think that you kind of
- 8:13Speaker 5: have to to keep moving forward, and it would be
- 8:15Speaker 5: amazing to one day make it to stadiums, and I
- 8:18Speaker 5: think every.
- 8:18Speaker 6: Artist would would say that.
- 8:19Speaker 5: But if we never get to that point, I'm also like,
- 8:22Speaker 5: it's insane that we get to do arenas in these amphitheaters,
- 8:25Speaker 5: Like that's the craziest thing in the world. But yeah,
- 8:27Speaker 5: there's definitely those those ambitions in the back of my mind.
- 8:31Speaker 1: Content but not complacent is like a way of life,
- 8:34Speaker 1: and I've never heard it said like that before. Yeah,
- 8:37Speaker 1: we talked to you guys as you were putting new
- 8:39Speaker 1: music out, and you were in the best mental place,
- 8:42Speaker 1: you know, individually but collectively that you've maybe ever been.
- 8:46Speaker 1: As you look back on, you know, the last year
- 8:50Speaker 1: now that you've been in this more clear headspace and
- 8:53Speaker 1: been able to appreciate things a little more, what's the
- 8:56Speaker 1: last year been like versus maybe years in the past.
- 8:59Speaker 4: It's been a maya, man.
- 9:00Speaker 3: I feel like we've been able to soak in this
- 9:02Speaker 3: year a little bit more than the past. We've gotten
- 9:03Speaker 3: to do all kinds of stuff.
- 9:05Speaker 5: Man.
- 9:05Speaker 3: We've gotten to have number ones on country radio thanks
- 9:07Speaker 3: to folks like you. Weve gotten a play Arenas, sold out,
- 9:10Speaker 3: Bridgestone just down the way, gotten to play amphitheaters for
- 9:13Speaker 3: the first time, headlining. We've opened for everybody in those amphitheaters,
- 9:16Speaker 3: Blake Sheldon, Darius Rucker, you know, Rascal Flats, fgl But
- 9:20Speaker 3: to get to go into those amps and headline, see
- 9:21Speaker 3: our name on the top of the marquee, see you know,
- 9:24Speaker 3: ten thousand people up in that lawn going crazy singing
- 9:26Speaker 3: the words.
- 9:27Speaker 4: How was that kid?
- 9:27Speaker 2: Man?
- 9:28Speaker 3: I still feel like that kid, you know, especially this year,
- 9:31Speaker 3: bringing it back to like the basics, the fundamentals, and
- 9:34Speaker 3: just appreciating it all. I feel like we had those
- 9:36Speaker 3: moments on stage where we're like, dude, this they're singing
- 9:38Speaker 3: bigger houses. This is like we're up here with an
- 9:41Speaker 3: acoustic guitar sitting on this little house and they're singing
- 9:43Speaker 3: this freaking song back to us.
- 9:44Speaker 4: I feel like in the past. You know, we're going,
- 9:47Speaker 4: going and going.
- 9:47Speaker 3: Tequilu's happening. Speechless has happened, and we didn't take that.
- 9:50Speaker 3: You know, we've talked about this before. We didn't take
- 9:52Speaker 3: that moment to sit back, to soak it in and
- 9:54Speaker 3: be like this is really freaking cool, you know. And
- 9:57Speaker 3: this go around, we had moments where we probably were
- 9:59Speaker 3: a little unprofession on stage where we were just like
- 10:01Speaker 3: we sat there for five minutes and just soaked it in,
- 10:03Speaker 3: like dude, We looked at each other, hugged it out,
- 10:06Speaker 3: set it to the fans like, oh man, I just
- 10:08Speaker 3: I need a sec like this is a dream come true.
- 10:10Speaker 3: Because there was a moment that we weren't sure if
- 10:13Speaker 3: we were ever going to get to do that again.
- 10:14Speaker 3: To stand on that stage and to be back up
- 10:16Speaker 3: there have so much love from the fans from country
- 10:19Speaker 3: radio is just unbelievable.
- 10:21Speaker 1: How do you make sure because it felt and I
- 10:23Speaker 1: don't want to put the words in your mouth, but
- 10:25Speaker 1: it felt like you guys were at a breaking point
- 10:27Speaker 1: like hey, like you do your thing, I'm gonna do
- 10:30Speaker 1: my thing. Love you not by, but uh, how do
- 10:35Speaker 1: you make sure to not get back there and not
- 10:38Speaker 1: that you had problems with each other. I don't want
- 10:40Speaker 1: to like paint that, but like, how do you make
- 10:42Speaker 1: sure that you don't get back to a place where
- 10:44Speaker 1: you're like, I need to do my thing, dude.
- 10:46Speaker 5: Well, I think it's communication is the number one thing
- 10:48Speaker 5: in any kind of relationship, whether that's a marriage or
- 10:51Speaker 5: a friendship.
- 10:52Speaker 6: And we've done a really.
- 10:53Speaker 5: Good job about that of keeping everything of Like, hey,
- 10:57Speaker 5: at the end of the day, you know, obviously we
- 10:58Speaker 5: have an amazing team and we have things kind of
- 11:01Speaker 5: go out from there, but it starts with us, and
- 11:03Speaker 5: we have to make sure that you know, Dan and
- 11:04Speaker 5: I are on the same page at all points in time.
- 11:07Speaker 5: You know, if I if he knows that you know,
- 11:09Speaker 5: something bothers me, or if I know that something bothers him, Like,
- 11:11Speaker 5: I've got his back one hundred percent, he's got mine.
- 11:13Speaker 5: And I think starting there and then moving out is
- 11:16Speaker 5: the way that leadership kind of has to work because
- 11:18Speaker 5: we're running also a business, you know, and we have
- 11:20Speaker 5: a lot of people that we really care about that
- 11:23Speaker 5: or you know, that are working with us, you know,
- 11:25Speaker 5: to make this whole thing happen, and we want to
- 11:26Speaker 5: make sure that it's working in the healthiest way that
- 11:28Speaker 5: it possibly can. And the best way for that to
- 11:30Speaker 5: happen is that Dan and I got to be on
- 11:31Speaker 5: the same page at all points in time, and I
- 11:33Speaker 5: know that we're at a place in our friendship in
- 11:36Speaker 5: our career that we can be really honest with each other,
- 11:39Speaker 5: just like, hey man, this is I'm not feeling this.
- 11:41Speaker 6: I really don't want to do this. And when you
- 11:43Speaker 6: can kind.
- 11:44Speaker 5: Of get to that place, it's a very sustainable model,
- 11:47Speaker 5: I think when you see things that have happened, because
- 11:49Speaker 5: I've looked at this really carefully because it hit home
- 11:53Speaker 5: a lot closer than I ever thought it would. You
- 11:55Speaker 5: look at all these duos that broke up and you
- 11:57Speaker 5: look at like what happened there, and think that as
- 12:00Speaker 5: your career goes along, you're a lot easy, Like you're
- 12:04Speaker 5: much more separated in moments than you used to be.
- 12:07Speaker 6: You know, when we were in one bus, you know,
- 12:09Speaker 6: and you're there and.
- 12:10Speaker 5: You're, whether you like it or not, we're talking for
- 12:13Speaker 5: seven hours, you know, on that bus, and I think that,
- 12:16Speaker 5: you know, as your career goes along, you know, you
- 12:18Speaker 5: have those the ability to kind of have a little
- 12:20Speaker 5: bit more space, which is amazing, you know, for your
- 12:22Speaker 5: life and your career. But if you don't have those
- 12:24Speaker 5: moments of communication, that's when things just kind of fall apart.
- 12:27Speaker 5: Because if you just don't talk to somebody for a
- 12:30Speaker 5: while and the only times you see each other is
- 12:32Speaker 5: on stage or in little points when you have to
- 12:34Speaker 5: do something professional, it gets really you know, things, little
- 12:38Speaker 5: things can turn into two big things really quickly. And
- 12:40Speaker 5: we've seen that over the career of not only country duos,
- 12:43Speaker 5: but pop duos and rock duos, and it's just, you know,
- 12:46Speaker 5: we try to learn from that and rather than fall
- 12:48Speaker 5: into those same traps, we just, man, let's let's talk
- 12:51Speaker 5: it out, because you'd be surprised what can change over
- 12:55Speaker 5: a conversation of just something very very small, you know,
- 12:58Speaker 5: and being very human.
- 12:59Speaker 1: But these moments, the way you worded something and that
- 13:02Speaker 1: answer was awesome, and I want to give you credit
- 13:04Speaker 1: for it, because a lot of people would be like
- 13:06Speaker 1: a lot of people would word that, Oh, I have
- 13:08Speaker 1: a lot of people. We have a lot of people
- 13:10Speaker 1: depending on us. You said, we have a lot of
- 13:12Speaker 1: people making this work with us, right, So it's obviously
- 13:16Speaker 1: you vision yourself in the trenches with them versus like
- 13:19Speaker 1: here's Dan and Shay and they're you know, holding us up.
- 13:22Speaker 1: Have you always thought that way? Have you always are?
- 13:24Speaker 1: Did it take you a second to step back and
- 13:26Speaker 1: be like, hey, we're all rolling this boat.
- 13:28Speaker 3: I think it's hard sometimes, man, because I've those are
- 13:30Speaker 3: our boys, Like we came up with those guys.
- 13:32Speaker 4: I've known those guys for twenty years.
- 13:33Speaker 3: We've been playing music, touring in vans, playing in bars, clubs,
- 13:37Speaker 3: doing the whole thing for so long. And like it's
- 13:40Speaker 3: sometimes weird that our names on the T shirt. I guess,
- 13:43Speaker 3: like that's an imposter syndrome thing that we battle with
- 13:45Speaker 3: sometimes Sometimes we have to be like, all right, we're
- 13:47Speaker 3: taking responsibility.
- 13:48Speaker 4: We got to go do this, or our names on
- 13:49Speaker 4: the thing or whatever.
- 13:50Speaker 3: I'm like, no, Like, we're all in this, man, this
- 13:52Speaker 3: is our crew. These are our guys, and we're so
- 13:55Speaker 3: grateful for him. Man.
- 13:56Speaker 4: We would, honestly, we would have nothing without them.
- 13:58Speaker 3: You know. It's like they put as much time as
- 14:00Speaker 3: we do. Like I'm away from my wife and dogs,
- 14:02Speaker 3: Chase away from his wife and the kids, Like so
- 14:04Speaker 3: are they, you know, and like they might not get
- 14:07Speaker 3: the glory of getting to accept that trophy on stage
- 14:09Speaker 3: or you know, have their name on the thing.
- 14:11Speaker 4: So it's like, I don't know.
- 14:12Speaker 3: I think like keeping that humble attitude has allowed us
- 14:15Speaker 3: to do it at this level for so long.
- 14:18Speaker 4: I don't know, man.
- 14:18Speaker 3: And also, again, like Shay said earlier, being in a duo,
- 14:21Speaker 3: keeping each other in check. If somebody starts getting out
- 14:23Speaker 3: of line, it's like, dude, come on, come on, Like
- 14:25Speaker 3: we're still the same guys that were riding around in
- 14:27Speaker 3: old Blue with fourteen guys on the bus, you know
- 14:29Speaker 3: what I mean, Like still literally the same guys and uh, man,
- 14:33Speaker 3: just these things that we get to do, and also
- 14:35Speaker 3: having like our crew and that close knit of a
- 14:37Speaker 3: community out there makes us appreciate it more.
- 14:39Speaker 6: You know.
- 14:40Speaker 4: It's the same dudes who were like that.
- 14:41Speaker 3: We'll send like throwback pictures of the group chat like,
- 14:44Speaker 3: look at these dudes from back, you know, like when
- 14:46Speaker 3: we started touring, playing Joe's on Weed Street or Cannery
- 14:49Speaker 3: Ballroom here I think our first headlining show in Nashville
- 14:51Speaker 3: or soul Shine Pizza, Like everybody listening to soul Shine
- 14:54Speaker 3: that's like a long time ago. We're aging ourselves right now,
- 14:58Speaker 3: but doing riders rounds there, man, and it's, uh, it's
- 15:01Speaker 3: I don't know, We're grateful those guys are stuck with
- 15:02Speaker 3: us that this long over ten years.
- 15:04Speaker 4: That's that's crazy.
- 15:05Speaker 1: You were talking about the house that's on stages you
- 15:07Speaker 1: guys perform. I've seen the house and a ton of pictures.
- 15:09Speaker 1: You guys did like a little radio hang with when
- 15:11Speaker 1: the house was there. What that house has become like
- 15:14Speaker 1: a third member of the band. What's gonna happen?
- 15:16Speaker 3: It's the most expensive member that we got three of
- 15:20Speaker 3: those houses built.
- 15:20Speaker 4: We couldn't fit in the dang truck.
- 15:22Speaker 1: What's the plan after after that's run its.
- 15:24Speaker 4: Course and we gotta to pay for storage? So you
- 15:26Speaker 4: got any space in the backyard needs.
- 15:28Speaker 1: You know, drive spring Hill, we'll put it.
- 15:32Speaker 2: My kids keep asking about it. They're like, Daddy, what
- 15:35Speaker 2: are we When do.
- 15:35Speaker 6: We get in that house?
- 15:36Speaker 2: Because I've got to like mention them jokingly.
- 15:38Speaker 5: Like hey, my asher was like, if you guys are
- 15:41Speaker 5: finished with like you do we get to you think
- 15:43Speaker 5: we could get it? And I was like, Oh, I
- 15:44Speaker 5: don't know, buddy, you know, maybe don't ever say maybe
- 15:47Speaker 5: it's a yes in your kids mind. I should have
- 15:49Speaker 5: never said anything everywhere like do you think that they're
- 15:52Speaker 5: like almost done with it? I'm like, dude, we don't
- 15:53Speaker 5: where are we going to put that? First of all,
- 15:55Speaker 5: like we're gonna have to either live in it or
- 15:57Speaker 5: it's gonna have to go in our backyard. And I
- 15:58Speaker 5: was like, I mean, I'll I'll do it. I'll live
- 16:00Speaker 5: in that house with you guys. If you really want
- 16:01Speaker 5: to do that, let's do It's.
- 16:03Speaker 6: Yeah, we'll see.
- 16:03Speaker 4: It's still pretty sturdy. Honestly it is.
- 16:05Speaker 1: Well it's and you guys climb up on it, right,
- 16:08Speaker 1: I mean, you're not like huge individuals. I'm not saying that.
- 16:11Speaker 3: Well, there's multiple iterations of this house. The first one
- 16:14Speaker 3: was like a little bit flimsy. It was for the
- 16:15Speaker 3: music video. It wasn't meant to be like, you know,
- 16:19Speaker 3: knocked around at a truck. We did like a little
- 16:21Speaker 3: event when the record came out. We had a bunch
- 16:22Speaker 3: of writers and one of our co writers on the song.
- 16:24Speaker 3: I'm not going to say which one, but his name
- 16:25Speaker 3: starts with an A.
- 16:27Speaker 4: He got on the house.
- 16:28Speaker 3: And like there's like a little railing on the front,
- 16:30Speaker 3: like a little picket fence around the front. Knock the
- 16:32Speaker 3: whole thing off, like just I mean, it was like
- 16:34Speaker 3: toothpicks and his defense like one little flick of the
- 16:36Speaker 3: thing and it was down. So that was our cue.
- 16:38Speaker 3: It was like, this thing ain't going on the road
- 16:40Speaker 3: with us. We got to get a reinforced one. And
- 16:42Speaker 3: then it was like, okay, cool, we got this stage design,
- 16:45Speaker 3: big lights, big risers were coming out of the floor
- 16:47Speaker 3: and doing all this stuff, and it's like the guy's
- 16:49Speaker 3: bad news. We can't fit the house in the truck.
- 16:52Speaker 3: I'm like, what are you talking about. You can't fit
- 16:53Speaker 3: that house in a truck.
- 16:54Speaker 4: Come on, pay all this money for it.
- 16:56Speaker 3: So like the ultimate solution was to cut the house
- 16:59Speaker 3: in half vertically and then like then it fit in
- 17:02Speaker 3: two pieces, you know, you slid it in and then
- 17:04Speaker 3: it wheeled on stage and they were like, what can't
- 17:07Speaker 3: fit through the doors in these arenas. I was like,
- 17:08Speaker 3: how does the zamboni fit through the freaking doors in
- 17:10Speaker 3: the arenas? You know?
- 17:12Speaker 4: Well, yeah, that's I shut him down with that one.
- 17:14Speaker 3: As you should cut the house in half and it's
- 17:16Speaker 3: slid in the truck somehow, And then they had to
- 17:18Speaker 3: like in the fifteen seconds between the songs, the crew
- 17:22Speaker 3: guys assembled it on stage. So shout out to the
- 17:24Speaker 3: crew guys for assembling a house in fifteen seconds. That's
- 17:26Speaker 3: about how fast they do in Nashville these days anyways.
- 17:29Speaker 1: But but I will tell you, you take this beautiful song
- 17:31Speaker 1: bigger houses and there's a house, and then you make
- 17:33Speaker 1: it a song about divorce and split the house.
- 17:35Speaker 6: And right here, come on, are you a songwriter?
- 17:43Speaker 1: I do have some ideas.
- 17:45Speaker 6: I think it out.
- 17:49Speaker 1: At what point do you go, let's make Christmas music?
- 17:51Speaker 1: Because that's kind of a ballsy choice to make, right
- 17:54Speaker 1: because there's a lot of people that tried in it.
- 17:56Speaker 5: So yeah, it's a tough thing to do. And I
- 17:59Speaker 5: will say this, this has kind of been ten years
- 18:01Speaker 5: in the making. The very first song we did was
- 18:02Speaker 5: have Yourself in Mary Little Christmas, and that was always
- 18:05Speaker 5: explain eventually the album was was obviously the plan to
- 18:09Speaker 5: put together, you know, a body of work. But it's
- 18:11Speaker 5: really tough because you've got to do it in between.
- 18:14Speaker 5: You can't record it at Christmas time. You know, you've
- 18:17Speaker 5: got you're starting in January, you know, in a new year,
- 18:20Speaker 5: and for us, we've always been rolling and rolling, so
- 18:22Speaker 5: it's really tough to like, in between tours and between
- 18:25Speaker 5: writing an actual you know record that's not a Christmas record,
- 18:29Speaker 5: trying to find the time to do that is really difficult.
- 18:31Speaker 5: So it kind of started, you know, we had put
- 18:33Speaker 5: together some songs. We had written you know, one or
- 18:35Speaker 5: two songs this year, you know, I mean in previous years,
- 18:39Speaker 5: and we put out some original Christmas music and that
- 18:41Speaker 5: really it went over really well with our fans, and
- 18:44Speaker 5: the songs that you know there went platinum, and it
- 18:46Speaker 5: was like, all right, we can go into the Christmas space.
- 18:49Speaker 5: And the dream was to do it, you know, an album.
- 18:51Speaker 5: And when it came time, it was January of this year.
- 18:55Speaker 5: I'm trying to think of what year it is. I
- 18:56Speaker 5: think it was this year. We had a it was
- 18:59Speaker 5: a a snow fall here in Nashville and we just
- 19:02Speaker 5: kind of that kind of started it all. Dan had,
- 19:05Speaker 5: you know, texted me. I was like, hey, we let's
- 19:06Speaker 5: let's come work on this thing. And we just started
- 19:09Speaker 5: writing songs. We had a little bit of a break
- 19:11Speaker 5: and we started writing some songs for the Christmas record.
- 19:13Speaker 5: And about halfway through this kind of process, Dan was like,
- 19:17Speaker 5: I think I can pull it off, which already doing
- 19:19Speaker 5: one album is a lot trying to pull off a
- 19:22Speaker 5: double album in a year when we're touring all summer
- 19:24Speaker 5: and in the spring was like, this is gonna be
- 19:27Speaker 5: a big undertaking and for me, I could do it
- 19:29Speaker 5: really easy because my stuff takes like two days. Dan's
- 19:32Speaker 5: gonna spend the next nine months, you know, trying to
- 19:34Speaker 5: you know, make this record happen. And it was just
- 19:36Speaker 5: awesome that it that it came together, and I you know,
- 19:39Speaker 5: kudos to Dan for somehow pulling this off in between
- 19:42Speaker 5: all the other stuff that we had going on. But
- 19:44Speaker 5: it kind of started there in January and we put
- 19:46Speaker 5: together all these songs and put together our favorite songs
- 19:48Speaker 5: and people were like, how did you how.
- 19:49Speaker 2: Did you choose and like we kind of didn't have to.
- 19:52Speaker 2: We put them all on there.
- 19:53Speaker 4: Every single Christmas song that's ever been written and recorded.
- 19:56Speaker 1: We did it. We did it.
- 19:57Speaker 5: It was just all all of the songs, not all
- 19:59Speaker 5: the hits, just all this So yeah, man, I you know,
- 20:01Speaker 5: we somehow, I say we very uh loosely, Dan somehow
- 20:05Speaker 5: pulled this off, and I'm just so proud of how
- 20:07Speaker 5: it turned out.
- 20:08Speaker 1: Man.
- 20:08Speaker 6: He did a great job on the production.
- 20:09Speaker 5: And we really wanted this to be a timeless classic,
- 20:12Speaker 5: you know, not only the actual classics that we did, uh,
- 20:16Speaker 5: but the songs that we had that were originals. You know,
- 20:18Speaker 5: we felt like we really had some some special songs
- 20:21Speaker 5: that would be you know, for that next generation. You
- 20:24Speaker 5: know my kids now, you know, growing up listening to
- 20:26Speaker 5: this record. I have just about wore out Officially Christmas
- 20:29Speaker 5: because literally we got a CD player. My kids discovered
- 20:32Speaker 5: CD players and DVD players. They were just enthralled with
- 20:35Speaker 5: the idea that she didn't have to do on the
- 20:36Speaker 5: internet get out of Christmas exactly every single night.
- 20:40Speaker 2: I have this like fifteen dollars CD player. Every night.
- 20:43Speaker 5: If you were to like deliver some re eats to
- 20:46Speaker 5: my house, I promise you will hear Officially Christmas playing
- 20:49Speaker 5: on repeat, by the way, which I that's devastating. That's
- 20:51Speaker 5: a feature on those little players. He wants to listen
- 20:54Speaker 5: to Officially Christmas on repeat, and I'm talking about from
- 20:56Speaker 5: seven thirty to until he gets up in the morning.
- 20:59Speaker 2: I can just hear it's a Phishi Christmas.
- 21:02Speaker 3: And I'm like, oh, dear God, I said, you could
- 21:04Speaker 3: at least put them on the streaming service.
- 21:07Speaker 4: You ain't getting points for that on the CD.
- 21:09Speaker 6: No points.
- 21:09Speaker 1: My favorite part is you know that I'm paid so
- 21:11Speaker 1: little that I'm doing uber it's on the weekends. Thanks
- 21:13Speaker 1: for cooling.
- 21:14Speaker 2: I don't want to say specifically you.
- 21:16Speaker 5: I was talking to all the listeners out there, who
- 21:18Speaker 5: are the amazing breaths drivers.
- 21:21Speaker 1: May you guys put this Christmas music is just as
- 21:24Speaker 1: fantastic as you are outside of holiday music, is it.
- 21:28Speaker 1: Do you feel like there's a challenge to let that
- 21:30Speaker 1: music live its life because it's holiday based versus a
- 21:34Speaker 1: regular damage record.
- 21:36Speaker 4: It's tough, man.
- 21:36Speaker 3: I feel like we found this responsibility of Like record
- 21:39Speaker 3: came out October eighteenth, which is early. I apologize to
- 21:42Speaker 3: everybody who's a purist and say you can't celebrate for Halloween.
- 21:45Speaker 3: It's like, come on, guys, we got a finite window
- 21:47Speaker 3: to promote this record.
- 21:48Speaker 4: We got to make it.
- 21:48Speaker 1: Successful when you put the album out for the content alone, Yeah, yeah,
- 21:53Speaker 1: for sure.
- 21:53Speaker 4: Yeah, I gotta get.
- 21:54Speaker 3: Time, Lise, you know what I mean. October seventeenth, that
- 21:56Speaker 3: thing's going up. You know, we're living and breathing it.
- 21:59Speaker 3: You gotta find in that window. It's like, you got
- 22:01Speaker 3: to put that out. You got to get it in
- 22:02Speaker 3: the stores, you got to get it service to radio,
- 22:04Speaker 3: all the inside baseball here. But December twenty sixth, it
- 22:07Speaker 3: kind of is like cool, guys, what's next? So we
- 22:11Speaker 3: had to push it really really hard. We tried to
- 22:12Speaker 3: have content for like every day coming up. I've got
- 22:15Speaker 3: a lot of content stashed in my phone, some good content,
- 22:17Speaker 3: some absolutely terrible content. It's tough to come up with
- 22:20Speaker 3: like ninety pieces of consecutive content. You guys are doing
- 22:23Speaker 3: it over here. You do a great job of it.
- 22:24Speaker 3: I need to hire y'all next time because I'm not
- 22:27Speaker 3: good at it. But man, it's it's a different kind
- 22:29Speaker 3: of thing promoting it. Like literally did every TV appearance
- 22:33Speaker 3: we could, like, we're grateful for the opportunities, you know
- 22:35Speaker 3: we I think I was counting it in my head.
- 22:37Speaker 4: We did eleven.
- 22:38Speaker 3: Songs on TV in like forty eight hours or something
- 22:42Speaker 3: like that. Flew Nashville and New York, did the Thanksgiving Parade,
- 22:45Speaker 3: back to Nashville for like a day, back to New York,
- 22:49Speaker 3: did fallin Today's show, tree Lighting, flew to La did
- 22:53Speaker 3: the Voice, came back to the SEC Championship in Atlanta.
- 22:56Speaker 3: It's nuts nuts, And now we're doing Christmas at the Opera,
- 22:59Speaker 3: which is awesome. At least you get to sleep in
- 23:01Speaker 3: your own bed.
- 23:02Speaker 1: For that one last thing I want to ask because
- 23:04Speaker 1: I know we're wrapping it up. Christmas music is iconic.
- 23:06Speaker 1: There's so many songs that people, you know, their go
- 23:09Speaker 1: tos and andy you put them on and it brings
- 23:11Speaker 1: up memories from Grandma's house and parents' house. You guys
- 23:14Speaker 1: now have music like that. Tay and I just did
- 23:16Speaker 1: our top Christmas songs, and on her list was it's
- 23:19Speaker 1: officially Christmas tops.
- 23:21Speaker 6: Let's go, what does that?
- 23:23Speaker 1: What does that mean to you guys? To Your music
- 23:26Speaker 1: speaks for itself, but there's something special about a Christmas
- 23:29Speaker 1: music that can Christmas song that can last like that.
- 23:32Speaker 5: Man, you know, that's exactly what we had in mind
- 23:34Speaker 5: when we were creating this project. And I and I'm
- 23:36Speaker 5: you know, living breathing proof of that. I, you know,
- 23:38Speaker 5: right now in my house, Like I'm kind of passing
- 23:41Speaker 5: along those Christmas songs.
- 23:43Speaker 6: Selfishly.
- 23:43Speaker 5: It's mostly our music because that's kind of what we've
- 23:46Speaker 5: been doing for the last year. But I watch my kids, man,
- 23:49Speaker 5: and I'm watching this happen, you know, and now there
- 23:52Speaker 5: he brought some CDs to his school and like that,
- 23:54Speaker 5: now they have their favorite Christmas songs, and like, I'm
- 23:57Speaker 5: so proud of that because I, you know, a Christmas
- 23:59Speaker 5: record is very different than a normal, you know, album,
- 24:01Speaker 5: full album. You obviously you have songs that are going
- 24:03Speaker 5: to live on forever, and you hope that, like you know,
- 24:05Speaker 5: with your super fans, they know every song on the record,
- 24:08Speaker 5: but with this Christmas album, it's something that doesn't just
- 24:10Speaker 5: go away after you know, an album cycle. This is
- 24:13Speaker 5: something that is going to be a part of our
- 24:15Speaker 5: legacy for the next one hundred years, and our hope
- 24:18Speaker 5: would be, you know, in ten years a lot like
- 24:20Speaker 5: has happened with our other music. In ten years, a
- 24:23Speaker 5: you know, a girl that was little, that was five
- 24:25Speaker 5: years old, who is now fifteen tells us this lifetime
- 24:28Speaker 5: of stories.
- 24:29Speaker 6: You know, pretty good, dude, pretty good.
- 24:31Speaker 5: You know you're able to kind of hear all those
- 24:33Speaker 5: stories and the memories, and especially with Christmas music, it's
- 24:36Speaker 5: tied so heavily to a moment in time when you think,
- 24:39Speaker 5: I think back to a lot of the classics that
- 24:40Speaker 5: we recorded, I remember those songs when I was a kid,
- 24:43Speaker 5: and I remember the year that I got my Nintendo
- 24:44Speaker 5: sixty four. I remember the year I got my favorite
- 24:47Speaker 5: Power Rangers thing, you know, and I remember all these moments.
- 24:49Speaker 5: There's a song directly tied to that. I remember the
- 24:51Speaker 5: first country song that ever heard when I was a kid,
- 24:53Speaker 5: Like I remember those moments, and I feel like it's
- 24:56Speaker 5: we want to be that for this next generation of people,
- 24:59Speaker 5: just you know, every year having that plate in their
- 25:01Speaker 5: homes and just that that it would bring so much
- 25:04Speaker 5: joy and be as much of a blessing to other
- 25:06Speaker 5: people as it has been to us already this year.
- 25:08Speaker 2: Like I want that for the next fifty years.
- 25:11Speaker 5: I hope that when we're eighty five years old, you know,
- 25:13Speaker 5: there's an entire you know, few generations that have listened
- 25:17Speaker 5: to this, this Christmas album and just have gotten so
- 25:20Speaker 5: much joy from that.
- 25:21Speaker 6: And that's that's what it's all about. Man.
- 25:22Speaker 5: I hope that we bring a little bit more goodness
- 25:25Speaker 5: into the world than when we found it. And I'm
- 25:27Speaker 5: really really proud of what not just the actual music,
- 25:29Speaker 5: but what this means for the next twenty five fifty,
- 25:33Speaker 5: one hundred years of Dan and Shay.
- 25:34Speaker 1: That's awesome. I'm down for one hundred more years, by
- 25:36Speaker 1: the way, let's go.
- 25:37Speaker 4: Let's go the first year though.
