- 0:02Speaker 1: High Heart Music Studio, Dan Hurley. You've gone for a
- 0:06Speaker 1: basketball coach's show.
- 0:08Speaker 2: Dan's better half has entered the building, so now.
- 0:10Speaker 1: You're going to have to behave. I'm going to straighten up. No,
- 0:12Speaker 1: I'm going to sit up straight. Sit up straight. No slouching.
- 0:15Speaker 1: Trying to behave. Those eyes when she glares at me. Oh,
- 0:20Speaker 1: I know. I get that, too. I know what it
- 0:21Speaker 1: feels like with the players.
- 0:25Speaker 2: I'm going to ask you about gesturing, because you're pretty
- 0:27Speaker 2: good with the gesturing thing. The other night, you were
- 0:30Speaker 2: doing a lot of this, waving your arms up. What
- 0:33Speaker 2: was that all about? Tell the audience, because sometimes you
- 0:37Speaker 2: do that a lot.
- 0:37Speaker 1: In a game. Yeah, I don't know. I just think it's,
- 0:42Speaker 1: when I grew up, the coaches, at least the Big
- 0:45Speaker 1: East that I grew up with, and the fans of
- 0:49Speaker 1: some of those, like, you know, obviously Coach Calhoun and
- 0:53Speaker 1: you know, John Thompson, the late John Thompson, the late
- 0:56Speaker 1: Raleigh Massimino. I mean, the coaches were, they were themselves.
- 1:01Speaker 1: They were characters. And I think there's been so much,
- 1:04Speaker 1: there's so much to diminish the role of coaches in
- 1:07Speaker 1: sports today, to try to devalue them. And everything is
- 1:12Speaker 1: so much player empowerment, player empowerment, player empowerment. At some
- 1:16Speaker 1: point that becomes negative, especially in sports, like especially college sports.
- 1:23Speaker 1: Because coaches are really important in college sports. Because you're
- 1:26Speaker 1: dealing with developmental players. So that's that. And then the
- 1:30Speaker 1: other part of it is sometimes I'm just a jerk.
- 1:33Speaker 1: And I can't help myself. Right? Andrea?
- 1:37Speaker 2: You can't help yourself. I have told people, though, that
- 1:40Speaker 2: some of the things that you do are for effect.
- 1:42Speaker 2: You do them to get a reaction. Maybe from your team.
- 1:46Speaker 2: Maybe from an official.
- 1:47Speaker 1: I don't know. It's just tied into our program, really.
- 1:49Speaker 1: I mean, it's how we show up into the arena.
- 1:52Speaker 1: and how we practice every day, and just our mindset
- 1:56Speaker 1: and our mentality. Like, we don't slink into the arena
- 1:59Speaker 1: when we go on the road. I mean, we announce ourselves,
- 2:02Speaker 1: because we're six-time national champion UConn Huskies. You know, six-time. Six, six,
- 2:08Speaker 1: by the way, six! And in the last four years,
- 2:11Speaker 1: we've won two, and we've been in the finals another time. So, like,
- 2:16Speaker 1: we don't come in all meager. I mean, we've got humility.
- 2:19Speaker 1: You know, like, we know... We have respect for your opponents. Yeah,
- 2:22Speaker 1: are you kidding me? Like, the programs that we beat,
- 2:26Speaker 1: I don't troll. Like, I don't troll these other programs.
- 2:31Speaker 1: I got great respect for these other programs. Like, I'm not...
- 2:35Speaker 1: That's never been my intention. I mean, some of them,
- 2:38Speaker 1: I guess I do, you know? But... You're not going
- 2:42Speaker 1: to name names, are you? No. I mean, like the Duke,
- 2:46Speaker 1: I really don't. Duke is not the program that I
- 2:49Speaker 1: really am aiming at when I troll. Like, they actually
- 2:54Speaker 1: win a lot. I mean, like, they win a lot.
- 2:56Speaker 1: I mean, they're, you know, like they're along with UConn
- 3:00Speaker 1: right now. I think we've separated ourselves as the two
- 3:03Speaker 1: premier programs. Obviously, Florida, you know, going into this year,
- 3:07Speaker 1: they just won one recently. If they find themselves in
- 3:10Speaker 1: the final four. win a national championship, and they got
- 3:14Speaker 1: a squad that may be able to do it. Now,
- 3:16Speaker 1: they're in that conversation, obviously, as well. But, you know,
- 3:19Speaker 1: I was talking more about, like, programs that just produce
- 3:23Speaker 1: draft picks but don't make it to Elite Eights, that
- 3:26Speaker 1: don't make it to the Final Fours. You people are brutal, man.
- 3:32Speaker 1: I'm not the one saying that, by the way. Arkansas,
- 3:35Speaker 1: I don't know. I'm not the one saying that. I know.
- 3:38Speaker 1: You people. We've got a wild crowd. They're outspoken. They're
- 3:41Speaker 1: happy to see you.
- 3:42Speaker 2: They want to yell and scream.
- 3:43Speaker 1: This is what you get from people in the Northeast. Yeah,
- 3:45Speaker 1: and you're comfortable with it. Yes, that's why I fit in.
- 3:48Speaker 2: We're all comfortable with that. I've got to ask you this.
- 3:53Speaker 2: Going back to the Duke game, this is the last
- 3:54Speaker 2: thing I'm going to ask about this.
- 3:56Speaker 1: Oh, my God. Yes.
- 3:58Speaker 2: First of all, you're down 19 in the first half.
- 4:02Speaker 2: Are you in your mind saying, oh, we're going to
- 4:04Speaker 2: come back. We can get back in this thing. Are
- 4:05Speaker 2: you saying, please, let's not embarrass ourselves?
- 4:08Speaker 1: No, no. I mean, some of those early timeouts, I mean, like,
- 4:12Speaker 1: you know, I think, you know, they, you know, they
- 4:14Speaker 1: kind of jumped us a little bit. We cut it
- 4:16Speaker 1: to five or six and then Silas has a really
- 4:19Speaker 1: bad unforced turnover where now the first half, you know,
- 4:23Speaker 1: begins to now, you know, head in the wrong direction.
- 4:26Speaker 1: And I did, there's like a little bit of, weak
- 4:28Speaker 1: human nature kind of kicks in and you say man
- 4:30Speaker 1: this is like like this is this this is supposed
- 4:35Speaker 1: to be an epic battle and you know you could
- 4:39Speaker 1: get run here i mean i was like quick though
- 4:41Speaker 1: it's like three seconds yeah i'm like i punched myself
- 4:45Speaker 1: in the jaw i'm like yo don't be a punk
- 4:46Speaker 1: you know like yeah really like get because you don't
- 4:48Speaker 1: think that way because you do i mean you're you
- 4:51Speaker 1: you're you know the quality of who you're dealing with
- 4:53Speaker 1: the boozer You know, like, I mean, just what they
- 4:57Speaker 1: brought to the table, their team, everything. You know, that like,
- 5:01Speaker 1: you know, you needed to just stay in the fight.
- 5:03Speaker 1: And you know you have the DNA to still win
- 5:08Speaker 1: that game. And you're just begging and pleading with your
- 5:11Speaker 1: team and getting them to believe just in all those moments,
- 5:15Speaker 1: those interactions you have with the team. Just long enough
- 5:18Speaker 1: to put game pressure on them. And just preaching, you know,
- 5:22Speaker 1: if we put game pressure on them, you know, that
- 5:26Speaker 1: these guys will crack and they'll leave us a little window,
- 5:29Speaker 1: you know, to get to the Final Four and win
- 5:33Speaker 1: the game. And that's it. And that's... You've got to
- 5:36Speaker 1: just talk about this year's team now. Yeah, well, all right.
- 5:39Speaker 1: We haven't mentioned Braylon Mullins. This guy's going to have
- 5:41Speaker 1: a follow-up question about when we lost to Wichita State
- 5:43Speaker 1: in year one or something. Or Houston. I'm not bringing
- 5:46Speaker 1: that up. That's a bad one.
- 5:49Speaker 2: We haven't mentioned Braylon Mullins. I mean, he hasn't played.
- 5:51Speaker 2: He's getting ready to play. I mean, that moment for
- 5:54Speaker 2: him was fabulous.
- 5:55Speaker 1: And for the team.
- 5:58Speaker 2: Bob Hurley Sr. in the stands and your mother. I mean,
- 6:01Speaker 2: that was a crazy, crazy moment. You lost your haberdasher.
- 6:06Speaker 2: Your jacket fell off.
- 6:09Speaker 1: I know. Andrew's mom was the only person that wasn't
- 6:11Speaker 1: even looking at the shot. Oh, no. I call her Meemaw.
- 6:16Speaker 1: I'm 53 years old. I call her mother Meemaw. It's bizarre. But, yeah,
- 6:21Speaker 1: I mean, Braylon, that does a lot for his confidence
- 6:25Speaker 1: going into this year. He's a lot stronger. We just
- 6:29Speaker 1: got to get him. I mean, we could have. I
- 6:31Speaker 1: think the plan was like, let's play him the first half,
- 6:33Speaker 1: first Michigan State, and just get him some run there
- 6:37Speaker 1: because he had had multiple days of live practice. But
- 6:42Speaker 1: we just figured it was best to just get him
- 6:44Speaker 1: some consistent work up to Purdue so that he's got
- 6:48Speaker 1: a chance to get out there in the Purdue exhibition
- 6:51Speaker 1: as long as he doesn't have any setbacks. But he's
- 6:54Speaker 1: a lot stronger now. I mean, he looked great today.
- 6:57Speaker 1: I mean, went over and practiced today. Like, Braylon, you
- 6:59Speaker 1: look great. I mean, you look big. You look strong.
- 7:03Speaker 1: I mean, you look like a man out there. I'm
- 7:06Speaker 1: very excited to see what the guy can do this year.
- 7:10Speaker 1: Him and Silas, I think, backcourt-wise, could be just as
- 7:13Speaker 1: good as it gets. And the thing about Braylon is, like,
- 7:16Speaker 1: Braylon plays both ends. Like, Braylon's defense last year, especially
- 7:21Speaker 1: the last half, last third of the year, he was
- 7:23Speaker 1: like an excellent, excellent, two-way player that also gets on
- 7:27Speaker 1: the backboard and he steals the ball and makes plays
- 7:31Speaker 1: so um i just can't wait to see what the
- 7:33Speaker 1: guy does yeah just so much more mature uh as
- 7:37Speaker 1: a as a person just how he handles everything
- 7:40Speaker 2: Yeah great prospects for braylon mullins and the huskies we
- 7:43Speaker 2: take a quick break dan hurley back the uconn men's
- 7:46Speaker 2: basketball coaches show
