[SPEAKER_01]: Hi folks, welcome to the episode of Film Study.
0:04
[SPEAKER_01]: This is Ken McCusik, and we're here to discuss the offense from that big win over the Falcons.
0:09
[SPEAKER_01]: On Sunday night in Atlanta, joining me to do that is Jacob Obus Patan, Jacob, how are you doing?
0:15
[SPEAKER_00]: Good, good.
0:15
[SPEAKER_00]: I'm glad to be here with an exciting win this week.
0:18
[SPEAKER_01]: I appreciate you joining me.
0:22
[SPEAKER_01]: there aren't many great comeback wins in this league of that kind of a nature late.
0:27
[SPEAKER_01]: You know, down eight is a very tough place to come back from.
0:31
[SPEAKER_01]: And there are very few backup quarterbacks who can deliver that kind of a win even further and hotly.
0:37
[SPEAKER_01]: After a fairly pedestrian 57 and a half minutes came right out of the closet and play like Superman for two drives.
0:45
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I jokingly called him a comeback
0:51
[SPEAKER_00]: for comebacks now, so there's a lot of discourse around him, but he's definitely done his part more recently than before, but yeah, I like him a lot.
1:01
[SPEAKER_01]: This is one of his last three starts now.
1:03
[SPEAKER_01]: I all against NFC teams over the last year and a half, since that Chicago game actually gets week five of last year, right week six, whenever it was, I guess it's really over the last 16 or 17 games.
1:15
[SPEAKER_01]: He's won all these three in a row.
1:20
[SPEAKER_01]: Ravens wouldn't snap count in this one seventy one to sixty four and and that's remarkable considering that when you consider the period between late in Q three and the two thirty mark of Q four the Ravens only ran three of the twenty seven offensive snaps during that time that the they were on the field defensively somehow with those two tent pole drives they held the Falcons to just two field goals which was really a key to
1:51
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I mean, that's something that we've seen over the years that it just, it does feel different this year though, where the defense is kind of on the field a lot towards the end of the game, but it kind of felt, you know, not quite as scary as it did before, obviously, you know, you want them to close out drives a little bit quicker.
2:09
[SPEAKER_00]: That's so I'm sure some of you guys probably talk about the third downs during the defensive Discussion, but it's still felt different, but yeah, they just don't need to be on the field that much But that's why I think especially over time.
2:22
[SPEAKER_00]: There's so impressive to see that long drive Hear it out by the offense.
2:26
[SPEAKER_00]: It's just a pretty much put the bow on the game
2:30
[SPEAKER_01]: was really nice because they were at that point they'd been out snapped going into that going into overtime there I think 62 to 57 it might have been a 14-plate drive I think in a case they've been out snapped slightly in the game at that point and they took it down the field I think I've heard a lot of arguments in part of this has been a lot of discussion today about whether or not it was a good idea to go on to take them all I'm sorry to start over time.
2:55
[SPEAKER_01]: And I did a separate podcast on that side.
2:57
[SPEAKER_01]: I'd ask people to actually listen to that if they would.
3:00
[SPEAKER_01]: But one of the reasons given is that the Falcon's defense was all tired.
3:05
[SPEAKER_01]: Well, it's true, they had just been on the field for an eight play drive.
3:08
[SPEAKER_01]: But right before that, the Ravens were on the field for 24 and a 27 defensive steps.
3:13
[SPEAKER_01]: So I don't think I could really ascribe that as a big advantage for the Ravens.
3:19
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, and I came over who it was, I think it was a but like flowers is like, yeah, they were tired.
3:24
[SPEAKER_00]: So maybe they saw something.
3:26
[SPEAKER_00]: And the moment, they were a little bit discouraged on the the Falcons defense, but he made a comment about it, but yeah, I mean, they were on the field for a little bit like he said there was a pretty good break prior to that.
3:38
[SPEAKER_00]: So it wouldn't attributed to just that of either.
3:43
[SPEAKER_01]: One of the kind of scandals that came out of this game was somebody got a click to picture of the Ravens in Actives It included Lamar Jackson and listed his position as running back and the other four or five in Actives I think it might have been five they had two of them listed for the correct position and the others were listed for incorrect positions
4:02
[SPEAKER_01]: And it was, it's, I told that the personnel in that stadium have pulled some incredibly petty crap over the years, and there's what they do, of course, scored board.
4:15
[SPEAKER_01]: One thing they do is, if they're playing the Ravens or an AFC team, they just let Ravens on the, you know, visitor part of the scoreboard, where they were showing the score, apparently for this one, the Saints are there, they just let's visit her.
4:26
[SPEAKER_01]: And like the Falcons and Saints rivalry is that big a deal that you had to fell on somebody.
4:34
[SPEAKER_01]: But it's a big deal of the Falcons, you know, yeah, you heard it.
4:38
[SPEAKER_00]: I heard that that was a long play trot on the raven.
4:42
[SPEAKER_00]: So if it was good, good for them, it was funny, but maybe just a mistake.
4:48
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I don't think it was a mistake now that I hear the the the damning consistency of things that had happened before that Paul Park anyway, definitely a probably a bad karma thing to try to try and do, but it was what it was.
5:04
[SPEAKER_01]: One of the things a red zone success was very different.
5:06
[SPEAKER_01]: I think I called this goal to go success is actually red zone success Ravens went three of four in the red zone.
5:12
[SPEAKER_01]: That's excellent.
5:13
[SPEAKER_01]: The Falcons went one of three.
5:14
[SPEAKER_01]: That's terrible and Really a good Showing defensively in the red zone for the Ravens, but also good showing offensively that they were able to stick it in the end zone or huntly on all but that first drive of the game where they decided not to go four or fourth and two
5:32
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I mean, I mean, I think, I think the team definitely trust Hutley and a lot of people like see a lot of discourse said, says that they think they don't try to trust Hutley to do certain things, which I'm sure he's limited, but I think they're just trying to make sure they came over with something, because when you got a backup quarterback in there, you just drove down the field, you know, you want to end up with some kind of momentum through the game, especially coming out without your starting quarterback.
6:01
[SPEAKER_00]: So, I mean, I do like the idea of being aggressive.
6:04
[SPEAKER_00]: I wouldn't be upset with it at all, but I understand, especially after the drop.
6:10
[SPEAKER_00]: You know, like I can't imagine having that drop pass and then not converting a fourth down and goal and just kind of how that would take the air out, especially after such a successful drive.
6:19
[SPEAKER_00]: So, I'm up in the air about what would be correct and not, I wouldn't really dislike either decision.
6:27
[SPEAKER_01]: a few weeks ago, I guess this was week one, I really liked the fact that it was the first data point really for the mentor era in terms of game management that he went on 4th and 4th and gold from the 3 against Indianapolis.
6:38
[SPEAKER_01]: That didn't work out, but I was good.
6:39
[SPEAKER_01]: I was positive on the decision.
6:41
[SPEAKER_01]: Even without Lamar here, I think I got to go on 4th and 2.
6:45
[SPEAKER_01]: And when I look at the situation, they eventually put themselves in, which was that they needed a 2 point conversion just to tie the game, get it over time.
6:51
[SPEAKER_01]: Boy would have been nice to have that same play in use at that fourth and two fourth and gold in the two yard line.
6:58
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, just to talk real quick though, I mean, I don't know how I feel yet about all the wildcat at the goal.
7:04
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I mean, that's a little bit different and it's obviously had some success, but just a quick shout out to the defense, like I think they did an incredible job with their personnel this game, you know, basically,
7:18
[SPEAKER_00]: Having linebackers out there felt like a little bit more than normal, but yeah, I mean the Falcons They're they're one of those weird teams where they're they're not necessarily a top team But they also kind of have the tools to take down people.
7:32
[SPEAKER_00]: So I you know, definitely Give respect to both sides of the ball for for doing what they did this game especially with people out
7:41
[SPEAKER_01]: team effort.
7:42
[SPEAKER_01]: So they both got it done.
7:43
[SPEAKER_01]: And certainly, Huntley did not take any shots at all down the field, not even one, where he really tried to throw the ball over the defense through a couple balls in between level, level two and three.
7:54
[SPEAKER_01]: And the longest one is probably the throw to flowers, which they got the DPI on.
7:59
[SPEAKER_01]: But he did not really did not want to throw the ball into the teeth of their twin safety back there.
8:03
[SPEAKER_01]: They got two great ball hawks, probably the most biggest embarrassment of riches in the NFL in terms of ballhawking
8:11
[SPEAKER_01]: And, you know, I say, baits and watts are a very fine group.
8:17
[SPEAKER_01]: I've tried to think if there's another group that I would trust or be more fearful of in terms of getting picks, but that's probably it.
8:26
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I mean, I definitely think, I think we'll talk about it some more later, but that was kind of the big difference between the first half of the game for the most part outside of the opening drive, which was scripted well.
8:41
[SPEAKER_00]: They still kind of had a lot of routes trying to kind of push the field a little bit and not only just didn't have the ability to do that and there's left with a lot of like one one read short routes that were either covered and ended up being flushed out because of it or he was able to get out quickly and we'll talk about the line more later and I had some opinions on kind of how that played out but
9:03
[SPEAKER_00]: I think that was the last, the big difference is I had a whole very small right up that I really thought the short to intermediate stuff, especially with Bateman this week, getting him involved is going to be the difference of winning or losing because they're going to get pressure this game and they're obviously a good run deep and so I mean it's pretty much the area they, the offense had to work in.
9:23
[SPEAKER_01]: Was this looking prospectively to the Falcons game or now you talking about the Browns?
9:27
[SPEAKER_00]: No, for the Falcons game, I really thought that the key to success was, I mean, Zay was going to be helpful, of course, but I really thought that
9:36
[SPEAKER_00]: Baitman's ability as a technical runner.
9:39
[SPEAKER_00]: Yes, our path.
9:39
[SPEAKER_00]: It's going to be a router would be a major factor in this game.
9:42
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, and they're working through it.
9:45
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, you, John, time, throw guy.
9:47
[SPEAKER_01]: And he is the guy who fits Huntly a lot better than he fits Jacks it, honestly.
9:50
[SPEAKER_01]: But a great game for Baitman who's having a terrific season right now.
9:55
[SPEAKER_01]: And I think it's going on notice.
9:57
[SPEAKER_01]: But the Baitman haters had to retreat into the woodwork for right now.
10:02
[SPEAKER_01]: but he's doing the job this year.
10:04
[SPEAKER_01]: I'll talk about some of the significant offensive themes.
10:06
[SPEAKER_01]: Obviously, you know, without Lamar Jackson, the rate of offense completely changes, one of the very nice things about this was the design.
10:13
[SPEAKER_01]: I thought was terrific.
10:15
[SPEAKER_01]: That first drive with descriptive plays were very good.
10:17
[SPEAKER_01]: A lot of manufactured deception that was, you know, not an easy thing to do.
10:24
[SPEAKER_01]: put in place without Lamar Jackson in the game, you have a Tyler Huntley is such a limiting factor in terms of deception in the offense because he doesn't really run the read option.
10:34
[SPEAKER_01]: He can naked boot like any other quarterback in the NFL, you know, zone block left, they could boot right of the other way around, but I mean that's not a special superpower of any sort.
10:43
[SPEAKER_01]: Lamar Jackson faces the field, it makes the read like no athlete in history and it's, you know, it's obviously a large step down to Snoop even though he got the job done in this one.
10:56
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I mean, I guess that I think that you have to be a little more creative and a little bit more timing with something was snooping, but I guess that I actually like the fact, and I see arguments about this all the time, it's not to say that we know that snooping anyways, you know, more more efficient or better than Jackson, but it's that the offense does get forced to be a little more balanced.
11:24
[SPEAKER_00]: and in situations where it's kind of like the obvious choice, they don't overthink it because they just know like, this is what we have available to us.
11:34
[SPEAKER_00]: It's third and one, you know, let's not get crazy with this and try to skim up with something, you know, a deep past for no reason, or something, let's just hear the end reading.
11:45
[SPEAKER_00]: you know, work it out.
11:46
[SPEAKER_00]: So it has its upsides.
11:48
[SPEAKER_01]: Go ahead.
11:49
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, that was one place where I thought Huntley really provided a spark was on the actual QB sneaks.
11:54
[SPEAKER_01]: They don't run those with more in the game, obviously, but you know, you had you wanting a center, which is a was a big advantage for this knee.
12:00
[SPEAKER_01]: You can really, oh my god, he has some great plays on the sneaks.
12:04
[SPEAKER_01]: In fact, that the last sneak, he really had to shoulder a four different players on that play and provided
12:14
[SPEAKER_01]: But, you know, Huntley's ability to sneak the ball and willing us to sneak the ball very different from having the more in there, it's been suggested by the way, should Huntley be doing the sneaks.
12:25
[SPEAKER_01]: We can see if that is a question coming up.
12:27
[SPEAKER_01]: So let's lead that and we'll get to it later.
12:30
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
12:31
[SPEAKER_00]: The last thing I kind of would say is about we did have that discussion and the offseason about expectations of Huntley and Humphrey was our show and again, I mean, he hit every
12:42
[SPEAKER_00]: Like, I'm not expecting to go out there and essentially elevate the offense, but he's not going to make mistakes.
12:47
[SPEAKER_00]: He's going to keep things moving.
12:49
[SPEAKER_00]: And again, I do think he has a pension for those last little clutch moments, it's a promise.
12:55
[SPEAKER_00]: He just sometimes doesn't perform enough to get into those moments, but he does seem to be solid in those moments.
13:01
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, definitely was the kind of game that the Ravens have Tyler Huntley on the team for is to get you through a not terribly imposing set of games, two or three games.
13:13
[SPEAKER_01]: You hope to win a couple out of, you know, couple out of three, maybe one out of two is the more reasonable number, but you hope to get, he gets you through this.
13:23
[SPEAKER_01]: Now, they've got the Browns coming up this week and that is an absolutely critical divisional game.
13:30
[SPEAKER_01]: uh... you can't minimize the impact of this uh... uh... this is a huge tiebreaker implications losing the browns won't necessarily have a tiebreaker implications against the browns but it should put against the bangles or steelers uh... if either of them are are you know in the hot for either a wild card or a uh...
13:46
[SPEAKER_01]: a division title.
13:48
[SPEAKER_01]: So the Ravens can't afford to lose this game of the two.
13:50
[SPEAKER_01]: It was the much more important.
13:52
[SPEAKER_01]: If they were holding Lamar Jackson back and he maybe could have played, which I don't really think is the case.
13:57
[SPEAKER_01]: Then I certainly hope he's back for the Browns.
13:59
[SPEAKER_01]: I hope he's back for the Browns either way.
14:02
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I think like I said, I'm barely certain they will be, but I also know.
14:07
[SPEAKER_00]: All coaches, but especially if you're like any work from the harbor tree likes to be a little more vague about this stuff, but yeah, it's kind of whether I trust Huntly to be able to win it's just going to be it's just going to need to be another team after it.
14:23
[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, you know, when need to see more from Andrews, you know, we're going to need to see more.
14:29
[SPEAKER_00]: From the past for us, I think, you know, I think it was a really two.
14:33
[SPEAKER_00]: to big aspects that are going to need to step it up next week if unfortunately or uh, Huntley has to start.
14:38
[SPEAKER_01]: Right.
14:39
[SPEAKER_01]: Not a, not a terrible game from the past Russian this thing, but they still, the Ravens presented a pretty difficult opportunity set to, to Panics, but he still outperformed his opportunity set by more than a yard per throw.
14:56
[SPEAKER_01]: So that was not good.
14:57
[SPEAKER_01]: We'll talk about some of the particulars of that a little bit later.
15:00
[SPEAKER_01]: 5.0 A dot for Humphrey, that's up from 0.3,
15:08
[SPEAKER_01]: quarterback his entire career is you know it's seven eight yards you know maybe two yards shorter than a bar but but not a horribly short a dot and some of this might have been by design just because of the safeties and I actually kind of think in that way that the browns may present a bigger challenge because the browns aren't as dependent on two outstanding safeties to be a large component of their defense.
15:33
[SPEAKER_01]: In fact they're guys on the back end are pretty
15:38
[SPEAKER_01]: who's the other guy who's not not also has not played what J.
15:41
[SPEAKER_01]: Grant dealt it, although he came highly regarded in the league, but I don't think he's got a whole lot in there since.
15:47
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I mean, I did briefly bring this up from one of your post on Reddit.
15:51
[SPEAKER_00]: It's just, I don't think Huntley is a guy at all that pushes the ball down the field, but I definitely think that I said it to someone else, where basically I said it's
16:02
[SPEAKER_00]: It's not a there's a misnomer that it's an inability of his.
16:05
[SPEAKER_00]: It's just he's not very good at it.
16:07
[SPEAKER_00]: Um, and it's just not really where, you know, where is that what an ability is.
16:14
[SPEAKER_00]: I'm talking to like, you know, people, I do feel like people think he literally has a neutral arm.
16:18
[SPEAKER_00]: It can't go more than 35 yards.
16:19
[SPEAKER_00]: It's not okay.
16:20
[SPEAKER_00]: So I mean, yeah, he, he, he just isn't very accurate.
16:23
[SPEAKER_00]: So it's not going to be something they're going to do a lot of fun.
16:25
[SPEAKER_00]: Like he said at
16:27
[SPEAKER_00]: I think people really do think he's like sitting at like under five for his career and it's not that bad.
16:33
[SPEAKER_00]: It's not good.
16:33
[SPEAKER_00]: It's not that bad.
16:35
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
16:36
[SPEAKER_01]: And I believe it was a clutch play and this one, one thing that had been killing the Ravens all year is the holding penalty.
16:42
[SPEAKER_01]: Well, the penalties have all sorts on the offensive line.
16:44
[SPEAKER_01]: But holding penalties in particular are some illegal downfield plays.
16:47
[SPEAKER_01]: And Huntley last week had three drives stalled on him with penalties.
16:53
[SPEAKER_01]: And two of them were five yard flags.
16:54
[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, they're kind of things that, you know, they're a speed bump to Lamar.
16:59
[SPEAKER_01]: In the case of Huntley, he overcame an enormous first and 20 situation with the third of flowers.
17:06
[SPEAKER_01]: That was going to give me for 26 yards if they counted the catcher, end up being 29 yards on the DPI.
17:13
[SPEAKER_01]: But either way, he got it back on the very next play.
17:16
[SPEAKER_01]: And then they had an earlier holding call that he got by as well and I don't remember exactly how he did it But it was the there was a call on Stanley the second one was on Jones.
17:26
[SPEAKER_00]: It was on that drive in the final two minutes Yeah, no, like I get he's just that's what I've always seen in him is like I do think that he's the offense isn't particularly explosive or anything
17:42
[SPEAKER_00]: I don't think they're going to put a lot of points up all those surprisingly if you include the overtime, which is a little cherry picking, he's averaging the last three games, I think 32 or 34 points, which is I think it would be a surprising thing to people, but yeah, he just has that consistent grind of
17:59
[SPEAKER_00]: moving the ball down the field.
18:00
[SPEAKER_00]: The issues is one air kind of can derail that so easily.
18:04
[SPEAKER_01]: You can't really recover.
18:05
[SPEAKER_01]: It's like one high variance play.
18:09
[SPEAKER_01]: It doesn't even have to be a turnover or anything like that.
18:12
[SPEAKER_01]: He's actually been quite good in the recent games of not turning the ball over.
18:16
[SPEAKER_01]: He's got, again, didn't do that in this game.
18:19
[SPEAKER_01]: Andrews was the one who was making most of the mistakes and he held on to the football through touchdowns and
18:29
[SPEAKER_01]: in this game in terms of taking care of the football and being a good game manager where you could ask him to be more explosive he actually came in a little bit short on his opportunity said here but you look at that for those final two drives getting 11 consecutive first downs like that is additionally very difficult I think the only got the third down twice that whole time they got they got a third down twice both converted by Andrews I think and I might be wrong
18:58
[SPEAKER_00]: uh... really remarkably successful drives and uh... march straight down the field yeah i think and that's kind of where i've always i've seen him is just what where i think where people really get the negative kind of outlook on him is he's not a great he doesn't do as good nearly as coming in and feeling in for jackson when he's injured compared to when he has a little bit of time although i i can't remember which uh... commentator was they did make a pretty solid point
19:26
[SPEAKER_00]: You know, the starter is getting all the reps and then you got the third string guy who's the practice squad, you know, when you're the second string guy, you're a lot of times just kind of there watching and kind of placing yourself mentally and and you know, and the the snaps, but you're not really out there getting a lot of practice.
19:41
[SPEAKER_00]: So it's not a surprising.
19:43
[SPEAKER_00]: I think to have him struggle coming in versus having that week to prep when they know, you know, jacks will be out.
19:49
[SPEAKER_00]: So.
19:50
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I guess I mean, he's a backup, you know, came in a one-to-game and four-quarter drive, like I said, you can't really ask much more.
19:58
[SPEAKER_01]: So, I have the probably the most outstanding statistic of all, this came from David Sullivan, who's done some great work by the way, looking at NFL verse and whatnot.
20:08
[SPEAKER_01]: But Huntley for the first 57, 29 of the game had a minus 0.23 EPA per drop-back.
20:15
[SPEAKER_01]: So he caused the team a significant amount because they had 26 dropbacks over that period.
20:19
[SPEAKER_01]: So he's about six points in the hole for the Ravens over those first 57 minutes.
20:25
[SPEAKER_01]: In the final two 30, one of the game is last 12 dropbacks.
20:27
[SPEAKER_01]: He was plus point 66.
20:30
[SPEAKER_01]: So he got it back and more during that time.
20:33
[SPEAKER_01]: So that was terrific.
20:35
[SPEAKER_01]: And that's point 66 per play.
20:37
[SPEAKER_01]: That's not point 66 total.
20:39
[SPEAKER_01]: So that's a lot outstanding to say the least.
20:46
[SPEAKER_01]: I think we talked about some of the originality, some of the deception that was brought schematically by Doyle, particularly in the scripted plays, but you know, a couple other things that I'd point to the pony backfield.
20:58
[SPEAKER_01]: They had not pulled this out the whole year yet.
21:01
[SPEAKER_01]: And they play their first pony of the year, and it's just a beautiful fake, fake de Henry, and then a hand off the hill that carbs right through the middle of the defense.
21:12
[SPEAKER_01]: Atlanta was just unprepared for it.
21:13
[SPEAKER_01]: They had bodies in the area that could have slowed it down or whatever, but all of a sudden Hill is off to the races sort of up the right side line.
21:23
[SPEAKER_01]: He really only wanted to run about a two-fer long race and third-out the race was about eight-fer long, and he was had a piano delivery effectively in the middle of that.
21:33
[SPEAKER_01]: I can't believe you did not run the guy.
21:34
[SPEAKER_01]: The guy was chasing him down.
21:36
[SPEAKER_01]: There's a safety who ran a 464 coming out of school.
21:39
[SPEAKER_01]: And he'll remember it was a 443 guy.
21:42
[SPEAKER_01]: Brought tremendous speed to this team.
21:45
[SPEAKER_01]: So that was unfortunate.
21:47
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, that was, I think that play kind of, there's a whole other debate like a sub-debatant the community about Henry getting to the line and how effective he is in short yard of situation.
22:01
[SPEAKER_00]: And I kind of talked about his running style
22:06
[SPEAKER_00]: difficult to sometimes get short yardage if he's not getting an initial room in the line, but I'm not getting too deep into it.
22:13
[SPEAKER_00]: That play kind of a kind of, like, kind of was everything that I love about Hill is that it's a small dude.
22:21
[SPEAKER_00]: He's good at finding space typically, because, again, when I was looking at that play and I first saw, you know, with it came up in the old 22, I was like, oh, this must have been a great, you know, great job by the line.
22:37
[SPEAKER_00]: blocked super great, it's just he found that he found the crease and pretty much was able to to get through it.
22:42
[SPEAKER_00]: So yeah, that was that was a lot on him, you know, it's he every year he makes a difficult you kind of ready to move on for him, but then he kind of decides to show you a few times that you're like, okay, well, this is probably why he's still on the team for a little bit, but yeah, it was it was a fun play.
23:00
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, he had the big run against Kansas City last year, which boosted his yards per carry for the whole year.
23:04
[SPEAKER_01]: And this game with a couple of big runs will really help his YPC for sure this time around.
23:11
[SPEAKER_01]: The other really interesting scheme play was the two point conversion.
23:15
[SPEAKER_01]: We talked about it a little bit earlier, but we talked about what the scheme actually was.
23:19
[SPEAKER_01]: It lined up flowers.
23:20
[SPEAKER_01]: Next to Henry in the back field, they fake the hand off the flowers.
23:24
[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, they're almost out of playmakers at this point.
23:26
[SPEAKER_01]: They could have used Hill again, I guess.
23:29
[SPEAKER_01]: Then they got Henry outside the frame of the defense off just that very first move from flowers and that really was the key there and then Henry there's nobody who's going to be able to stop Henry certainly no smaller player who's going to be able to stop everything that distance so very impressive job for him Getting outside the frame and getting where he needed to to know that he could power his way through Just a great call by Doyle and I
23:54
[SPEAKER_01]: I kind of updating this percentage on the fly, but what do you think is a chance that Doyle will be the offensive coordinator for the Baltimore Ravens.
24:01
[SPEAKER_01]: Come this time in 2027.
24:05
[SPEAKER_00]: I have to see how the rest of the year goes truthfully because he's doing some really great things.
24:14
[SPEAKER_00]: But the first few weeks and again, it's it's only been the first few weeks.
24:17
[SPEAKER_00]: The last two weeks I feel like were much better.
24:19
[SPEAKER_00]: So it could be a continuation, but if there's a few times, it's kind of like, I don't know about that.
24:25
[SPEAKER_00]: Like, you might, it felt like creativity for creatives, creativity's sake a few times, but he's definitely working what he can.
24:34
[SPEAKER_00]: What I was most in presses about and again, I saw in this game that I felt like was lacking
24:40
[SPEAKER_00]: to agree with both Munkin and definitely with Roman was just, I felt like I saw meaningful adjustments in the last few games and that's something I felt like we were sorely missers.
24:52
[SPEAKER_00]: There's been adjustments always.
24:54
[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, the coaches don't go and do nothing that never happens.
24:56
[SPEAKER_00]: But I felt like I could see what he was doing different for the last few years.
25:03
[SPEAKER_00]: It's been like, oh, it's a little bit of nuance.
25:05
[SPEAKER_00]: We're going to try something slightly different
25:09
[SPEAKER_00]: The offense really outskinned the defense and I didn't feel like they had that as much in the past
25:15
[SPEAKER_00]: So, I don't know.
25:16
[SPEAKER_00]: It's too early for me to say, but he's having flashes that I think people are like, but he's young.
25:23
[SPEAKER_01]: So, some of my biases implied for that.
25:25
[SPEAKER_01]: First of all, I tend to younger countries no matter what, but second of all, I've heard of speak a number of times at the podium, you know, got to ask him questions.
25:33
[SPEAKER_01]: He's extremely composed and able to flip the switch.
25:37
[SPEAKER_01]: Ravens had other cerebral coaches.
25:39
[SPEAKER_01]: Jerry Rossberg, a very cerebral coach, for example, who
25:44
[SPEAKER_01]: Um, they've had other high-links rebel coaches, just this, this is the offensive coordinator who I think really gets it.
25:54
[SPEAKER_01]: And Mark Tresman might have been smarter, I don't know, you know, he's certainly a very smart guy.
25:59
[SPEAKER_01]: He couldn't put it together on the field, not for this team, um, but, uh, but anyway, Doyle is an exceptionally exceptionally gifted offensive coordinator, I think he's
26:09
[SPEAKER_01]: likely at this point to be somewhere else next year.
26:12
[SPEAKER_01]: Now the Ravens can fortunately force him to be moving up in job if he moves That's one good thing and you mentioned I wanted to say make a shout out to Mitcher in this game too because Mitcher has also been making adjustments particularly with the past rush and with some fairly limited set I mean, you know, he's playing with three pawns in a night and a bishop.
26:30
[SPEAKER_01]: He doesn't have his queen as in his rooks right now in terms of of having all the pieces on defense And he's still making it work pretty well
26:40
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, it's nice to see.
26:41
[SPEAKER_00]: It feels fresh, like I said, it's, I think people would always in the past be a little, whatever, not, not boisterous, but exaggerate a little bit with the coaches and making their adjustments.
26:53
[SPEAKER_00]: But again, it's just, this year it feels palpable when it didn't so much in the years past.
26:59
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
26:59
[SPEAKER_01]: Hopefully, they can do what they need to against the Browns.
27:02
[SPEAKER_01]: We'd be remiss if we didn't talk about Mark Andrews in here.
27:06
[SPEAKER_01]: There's a little bit of good and a little bit of a lot of bad frankly in this game.
27:09
[SPEAKER_01]: The TD drop was unbelievable in terms of it being right in the wheelhouse for Andrews to catch that fall.
27:17
[SPEAKER_01]: Then the Fumble 6 was terrible.
27:18
[SPEAKER_01]: The 2.0 punch shot was very costly.
27:21
[SPEAKER_01]: the first down that got PD to the catch point.
27:25
[SPEAKER_01]: I'll call it to be generous.
27:26
[SPEAKER_01]: It actually I think got punched down also by lots in that case.
27:30
[SPEAKER_01]: So very tough day for Mark Andrews.
27:32
[SPEAKER_01]: The one thing I'll say about it is first of all, I came back in over time.
27:35
[SPEAKER_01]: I had two third down conversions which were very big.
27:38
[SPEAKER_01]: And the other thing was that he faced the music at the podium afterwards, which is a lot easier to do after a win.
27:44
[SPEAKER_01]: But, you know, he's the one who's got to answer for an extremely tough ball game and being the reason effectively.
27:50
[SPEAKER_01]: One of two reasons I would say why the Ravens were there at all.
27:55
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I mean, the discourse surrounding him right now is pretty rough.
27:59
[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, I've been a pretty big, pretty big supporter of his over the years, just because even after 20, 20, 20, he did put together a few good years.
28:12
[SPEAKER_00]: I understand he had his injury, but it does get kind of hard to look through some of the most important moments for him to step up and it does seem like he kind of fades a little bit and it's unfortunate because I feel like he becomes a scapegoat and a lot of things but his involvement is is undeniable a lot of things and he probably was a big component of why this game was initially close and it really shouldn't have been which is
28:38
[SPEAKER_00]: Again, a great thing to say about the team, they did rally and he did contribute towards the end.
28:44
[SPEAKER_00]: But, I mean, you're talking about potential 14 points swing on a single player's pretty heavy.
28:50
[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, that's outside of a quarterback or something like that.
28:53
[SPEAKER_00]: That's very rare that a skill position player has that type of impact.
28:58
[SPEAKER_01]: You're talking 14 points on all the place put together?
29:02
[SPEAKER_00]: Just making it's a very,
29:05
[SPEAKER_00]: just basically saying the drop touchdown and the return touchdown.
29:09
[SPEAKER_01]: Okay, that that way.
29:10
[SPEAKER_01]: I'm sure it's a perfectly reasonable number in total.
29:13
[SPEAKER_01]: I think I think it's a reasonable one.
29:15
[SPEAKER_01]: So yeah, I'm with you on that.
29:19
[SPEAKER_01]: The other major theme that's going on is the inability of the Ravens to field a complete offensive line at this point, and they had to bring up two guys on the practice squad just to make eight for this game.
29:30
[SPEAKER_01]: Now for those who don't know, he probably have heard it on Friday morning GM or other shows that that I have, you're kind of eight is the only number you should really have for an active NFL roster.
29:41
[SPEAKER_01]: And the reason is the NFL gives you one extra roster spot if you carry an eighth offensive lineman.
29:47
[SPEAKER_01]: If you don't carry any, you don't get it, okay?
29:49
[SPEAKER_01]: So it's a free spot, you'd be very foolish not to take.
29:53
[SPEAKER_01]: It's all teams know they have to effectively.
29:56
[SPEAKER_01]: And the ravens in this game had to bring up two guys off the practice squad, because they, you know, Voorhees was unable to go.
30:04
[SPEAKER_01]: They had Schuma adoga brought up to the practice, sorry, elevated, I think, prophylactically for the game, meaning they wouldn't have used him, and they've already done that a couple of times this year with Lichtenhand, I think,
30:17
[SPEAKER_01]: they where they elevate a guy and then they don't activate him.
30:20
[SPEAKER_01]: So I thought that might happen and then for he's apparently everybody's watching him before in warm-up city he just couldn't go and so the ravens were left with a doga who did happen to get in for one snap and they also had Kyle Hergle from last week who is the backup center in case anything happened to you one a and when we just bite our tongues right now that that doesn't happen given he's the the ravens best off
30:43
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I mean, Vincent, I was kind of wondering who, with where Audrey went down for the two plays, who would fill in for him.
30:49
[SPEAKER_00]: I was kind of assuming Vincent, but at the same time, I don't think, you know, depth charts are kind of wacky sometimes, but I don't think he's officially considered the backup for the right guard.
30:59
[SPEAKER_00]: With the only thing I can say that I do like is that
31:06
[SPEAKER_00]: While it wasn't outstanding, I'm actually hoping for worries to come back because still not great, but I've been the little I've seen from this year was a lot better than the last year, and I've actually really been impressed with Benson.
31:19
[SPEAKER_00]: So it's not actually the death that you said, it's just a fact of fielding eight players right now as we come very difficult.
31:26
[SPEAKER_00]: So I weirdly in a weird spot that I'm really hoping that
31:34
[SPEAKER_00]: depth right now.
31:35
[SPEAKER_00]: It's just having those extra guys in case of any further injuries and they're just completely blowing up and anything else happens.
31:43
[SPEAKER_01]: Well, let's hope it works out with Jurkins for a lot of reasons, but they certainly have made it made their big play this year with the draft capital they've you know, expanded on him.
31:53
[SPEAKER_01]: So we'll take a break here and we'll be back to discuss a lot of other things, including a day that Tyler Huntley had.
32:04
[SPEAKER_01]: All right.
32:05
[SPEAKER_01]: And we're back.
32:07
[SPEAKER_01]: So let's start with some more general comments about offensive formation that the Ravens used.
32:13
[SPEAKER_01]: Lots of 12 and 13 personnel this year.
32:15
[SPEAKER_01]: So far, they're now second in the entire NFL in 12 personnel 12 or 13 personnel used at 50 or 51% 50%.
32:25
[SPEAKER_01]: for the year.
32:25
[SPEAKER_01]: By the way, the team that Lizzie NFL, a lot of people won't know, but it's lost Vegas.
32:30
[SPEAKER_01]: Now, it's about 62% 12 and 13% else.
32:34
[SPEAKER_01]: It's become a real hallmark of what they do.
32:36
[SPEAKER_01]: And the Rams, so I think a lot of people would say, it's got to be the Rams, right?
32:39
[SPEAKER_01]: Because they play a lot of 13.
32:41
[SPEAKER_01]: They play a 13.
32:41
[SPEAKER_01]: They don't play a lot of 12.
32:43
[SPEAKER_01]: So it's a kind of a strange situation.
32:46
[SPEAKER_01]: They're actually behind the Ravens in terms of their percentage of 12 or 13.
32:49
[SPEAKER_01]: But
32:51
[SPEAKER_01]: They're leaning on that.
32:52
[SPEAKER_01]: This is something Femi has been real high on that they're going to play a lot of 13 personnel for the year.
32:57
[SPEAKER_01]: We saw a lot of that on Sunday night, 17% 13 personnel.
33:03
[SPEAKER_01]: What's your feeling about this multiplicative tight end to offense and is this what you expected when they got Doyle?
33:11
[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, so I watch a ton of games.
33:14
[SPEAKER_00]: I don't follow up a lot of the
33:17
[SPEAKER_00]: kind of the background so with the coaches everything I heard that Doyle was someone who liked to use tight ends.
33:23
[SPEAKER_00]: So I mean in my my very limited knowledge I was somewhat expecting just from word of mouth.
33:29
[SPEAKER_00]: As far as the usage I really I really enjoy having the tight ends and because it does create conflict of crease nap and then additionally it does give you
33:43
[SPEAKER_00]: the opportunity to kind of have mismatches on the corner backs and such, if you've the alignment fits, what I haven't really loved, I don't really think that our titans have performed exceptionally well in the run game this year, and I think, although we're going to talk about Venet who actually did have a very good game, which is promising.
34:06
[SPEAKER_00]: I call it a wam, you know, there's different names for it, basically, the Titan Wam where they have the Titan essentially try to trap a defense attack or something along the lines.
34:17
[SPEAKER_01]: Right.
34:18
[SPEAKER_00]: It was not, I didn't, I didn't love it.
34:19
[SPEAKER_00]: I don't think it was very successful, they seem to not use it a ton, but so I don't mind the Titans being out there, I just, I knew you see more out of them specifically in the run game.
34:31
[SPEAKER_00]: I love him or that like we talked about him and he's okay break bring it up a little bit there
34:37
[SPEAKER_01]: We'll try and work through this and break it up a little bit on me here, but we'll see if we can improve that.
34:42
[SPEAKER_01]: And I don't disagree with you by the way about the quality of Titan blocking.
34:47
[SPEAKER_01]: I think it's been okay, but but not great so far.
34:51
[SPEAKER_01]: And I think that's part of the issue.
34:54
[SPEAKER_01]: If you want, if you're going to have expand as many eligible receivers as they do on Titan's, then you expect to get a bigger payoff.
35:02
[SPEAKER_01]: By the way, it's still a well short of like Greg Roman area here.
35:06
[SPEAKER_01]: in terms of the percentage of heavies that the Ravens have on the field.
35:09
[SPEAKER_01]: So they still, with the, you know, exile of Patrick or card that occurred, you know, those full back snaps had to go to some other eligible receiver, you've heard you say that a lot.
35:20
[SPEAKER_01]: And they have actually been parceled out in terms of some additional 11 other the Ravens are very low in the entire NFL and that they're not now rock bottom anymore.
35:29
[SPEAKER_01]: They're 25th in the league in that, but they've gotten more 12 and more 13 in both cases and really a lot more 13 than they had before.
35:37
[SPEAKER_01]: They used to have a lot of 12, a lot of 22 to make up their large number of heavies then in the past and other teams use heavies too.
35:44
[SPEAKER_01]: They'll use a sixth offensive lineman, which three of its have done some of, but
35:49
[SPEAKER_01]: This was, they used in this game five OL sixes and they used 1.62 tight ends per play.
35:55
[SPEAKER_01]: So I, I, I considered that about where I would expect it to be.
35:59
[SPEAKER_01]: In fact, I think the 13% LS may be a little bit higher than I would expect it to be.
36:02
[SPEAKER_01]: But, um, I'm, I'm expecting the Ravens to probably continue and stick with this.
36:07
[SPEAKER_01]: And if they have some more comfortable leads, they're probably going to want to even play more of it to, to really grind out the clock towards the end of games.
36:17
[SPEAKER_01]: All right, let's move on here for a second.
36:19
[SPEAKER_01]: Mick Vanette, 19 snaps in this game.
36:22
[SPEAKER_01]: He ties Tilly Voss, on 1920s N, who was the first to ever all pro one for the Green Bay Packers.
36:30
[SPEAKER_01]: He got it in 1924 with his 337 receiving yards that year.
36:35
[SPEAKER_01]: as the only two players in NFL history who played for 10 different teams.
36:41
[SPEAKER_01]: And they actually had to play SNAPS in this case.
36:43
[SPEAKER_01]: And Josh Johnson, I know a lot of people think he did do it.
36:46
[SPEAKER_01]: He did not.
36:47
[SPEAKER_01]: He played for seven NFL teams.
36:50
[SPEAKER_01]: He just played in four leagues.
36:52
[SPEAKER_01]: And, you know, Canadian footballing near Reno League, and all these other things where he's, he's that a little bit of playing time and he's probably been on on the sideline for other NFL things where he didn't get to play, but he's not quite at that same level.
37:07
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, my mind goes to Fitzpatrick every time this discussion.
37:11
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
37:12
[SPEAKER_00]: I can't believe that he hasn't been close to that many.
37:15
[SPEAKER_00]: It feels like he's been on half the league, but
37:20
[SPEAKER_01]: that's a good one.
37:24
[SPEAKER_01]: I'll look that up.
37:24
[SPEAKER_01]: Well, we're talking about the next topic here.
37:28
[SPEAKER_01]: You know, we talked a little bit about the loss of misdirection, but is there anything else you can see that maybe they haven't pulled out of the bag yet that could give this offense additional misdirection or additional deception with Huntley if they have to go another week with him or more for that matter?
37:50
[SPEAKER_00]: like you say he's he's limited because of him not running really running the option I'm not a personally at this level outside of having it like a true gadget player I'm not a huge like wide receiver reverse kind of guy myself like lives again you have a true gadget player I really can't think like again I get that's why I give props to Doyle because
38:16
[SPEAKER_00]: I do feel like he's really been stretching the offense to what it can be the only thing I could actually think of and I think this is again an argument that I made when we were talking about Huntley's A dot is a big part of it is is that I think he is A.
38:34
[SPEAKER_00]: stick to the play kind of guy.
38:36
[SPEAKER_00]: So I mean, if they can, if they're going to really maybe throw a few wrinkles in there, it's going to have to be something truly designed, designed up to get someone essentially free down the sideline deep.
38:49
[SPEAKER_00]: So I mean, if he can create that kind of opportunity where, you know, he's really creating a broken coverage, I think that's
39:02
[SPEAKER_01]: I'll give you maybe one more that we haven't really seen this organization do much of in its entire history and that's run a lot of pick and rubbrouts.
39:09
[SPEAKER_01]: They've very scanty related to other teams.
39:13
[SPEAKER_01]: They very rarely line up in any kind of a bunch of formation.
39:17
[SPEAKER_01]: It's just not really part of their arrangement.
39:20
[SPEAKER_01]: But we just saw
39:21
[SPEAKER_01]: Great London in this last game continually get open, and one of the times he got open, I thought it was a borderline offensive pass and if he was called for dots and running into Humphrey on the play, but essentially dots and Hamilton, Hamilton is on dots and we're running a little bit of a flat route or an out route and they got in the way of Humphrey and
39:45
[SPEAKER_01]: London was able to rub free in that manner.
39:51
[SPEAKER_01]: Another element they haven't used, most of what I think we've seen from Doyle so far has been alignment choices that are unusual, so flowers in the backfield.
40:02
[SPEAKER_01]: This ponybackfield, they did.
40:04
[SPEAKER_01]: I don't really think they're gaining much from the direct snaps to Henry, but they're doing some of them, and they've tried to reinvigorate those by turning them into
40:14
[SPEAKER_01]: Jackson Henry plays again like the gold line plate is it's it's a classic kind of a jackson Henry play to have flowers and Henry next to each other because you've got you've got real elements of misdirection They didn't go through like actual true mesh point on that play, but flowers pretended to take the ball and the snap was not in the perfect position for for that fake to be as good as you know it The as it could have been, but it's still was good enough to fool the defense Henry got outside the frame and and square the touchdown, but
40:42
[SPEAKER_01]: Picking rub routes are one area where Ben Rothersberger just lived for the last years of his career and I'm wondering, you know, particularly if you have Tyler Huntley in there, if he could be the kind of quarterback who could take advantage of some of those.
40:52
[SPEAKER_00]: Well, I mean, that's actually what I was taking a pause to ask you is how do you feel he would fit into, because I mean, one throw that he showcased last night was the touchdown to Walker.
41:03
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, that I mean, that's the kind of throw that you're making potentially in those type of schemes.
41:11
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I mean, someone, again, random common, I saw someone's like, we're all the slants, you know, we're here's all the short yardage kind of quick stuff.
41:21
[SPEAKER_00]: And it is weird to me that it is such a theme for the Ravens, you know, sent in the Jackson era to really be lacking a dedicated,
41:34
[SPEAKER_00]: like scheme with that and again, I can only imagine because you want to maximize Jackson so much, but we're in three quarter-nateries now, where I just kind of feel like that's something that's not really been incorporated, like you said, especially not the picking robes and things like that.
41:49
[SPEAKER_00]: But I just methodical timing routes, just not something that's been the repertoire for over five years now.
41:58
[SPEAKER_01]: one of the things, well, the timing routes are not.
42:00
[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, Jackson is a site quarterback and and there's nothing wrong with that.
42:04
[SPEAKER_01]: So they're trying to manufacture more easy reads for him this year.
42:07
[SPEAKER_01]: That's the word at the podium and it's the word that, you know, I think I can see in the game plan as it's put out there.
42:14
[SPEAKER_01]: He said a few more on schedule throws this year certainly.
42:17
[SPEAKER_01]: And the only real on schedule throw you need with Lamar Jackson, a quarterback, the only real one you need is the one that gets the ball out of a condensed formation where the opponent is crowding line is great.
42:31
[SPEAKER_01]: If you've got that, you've got everything you need in terms of an on schedule throw.
42:34
[SPEAKER_01]: After that, let him roam and hunt for the big play as he sees fit.
42:39
[SPEAKER_01]: He's extremely good at it and very difficult and elusive and he can make plays with his legs or his arm, et cetera, et cetera.
42:46
[SPEAKER_01]: I just, I don't want to, I don't want to make Lamari into a different quarterback.
42:50
[SPEAKER_01]: I like kind of the way the Doyle is approached it, that, you know, give us some easy reads.
42:55
[SPEAKER_01]: Let's see if we can do that.
42:55
[SPEAKER_01]: And then let him get out of the second play.
42:57
[SPEAKER_01]: And that is one of the things they talked about so far I can't really say I've seen it be a huge difference, but that the second play,
43:05
[SPEAKER_01]: is going to be an easier, it's going to have better spacing design around it, and it's done more on that.
43:12
[SPEAKER_01]: I think mostly what we've seen, the really good first place that we've seen, have been some of the incuts from flowers that have really dominated this early part of the year.
43:20
[SPEAKER_01]: And that was true last year too.
43:21
[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, it's not a new thing of the offense.
43:23
[SPEAKER_01]: They have really not used Bateman when Lamar has been in there, nearly the degree you'd hope.
43:30
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, and I mean, like,
43:32
[SPEAKER_00]: I think they're pretty content and it seems like I know there was a whole discussion with Baman having the talk with Jackson after one of the games just to see if he can get some more targets but I mean just a shout out to Baman I mean you see him off camera making blocks you know for the run game you see him you know unselfishly a lot of times
44:01
[SPEAKER_00]: Again, I think where we have a lot of issues, so is in that he needs to pick up on is, I think a lot of people consider him not trying hard on a lot of these routes, you know, sometimes it doesn't look like he fills and it's just, I think it's sometimes, you know, he just feels content, he doesn't, it really just isn't expecting the ball.
44:20
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, and it's just, that's not an excuse for him, but at the same time, he seems like he's a team player by a great, I've been a huge fan of his, I think he can be a lot better than he's been utilized.
44:31
[SPEAKER_00]: And I will say, like, week to week, it does seem like Doyle has made comments on that they're trying to.
44:38
[SPEAKER_00]: And I also think that we're slowing to see him more involved, and I think we saw a lot of it this week.
44:44
[SPEAKER_00]: I think the offense we'd better for, especially with Lane coming back.
44:48
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, by the way, you know, the assumption is that you're going to be back this week.
44:52
[SPEAKER_01]: I don't know that's true at all.
44:53
[SPEAKER_01]: The guy's not practiced yet.
44:55
[SPEAKER_01]: And even though they made a move to de-elevate more and actually release Hillary, which is a little surprising, because the Hillary was a younger practice squad player who potentially could have been the next man up for the Ravens of Wider Seaver.
45:07
[SPEAKER_01]: They're now saying, ah, ah, we're going to bring more down to the practice squad, I think.
45:11
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, it's still be available for multiple elevations, and I think they're actually going to use the spot on offensive linemen, I think that's the that's the spot they have to use given the use to elevation.
45:23
[SPEAKER_01]: Just this last week on offensive linemen to to bring them up.
45:29
[SPEAKER_01]: All right, you know, one of the big things for me has been the need to balance what Doyle has come to figure out about, you know, the limitations of Huntley and he needs to have the ball scheme out of his hand quickly with the need to throw them all down the field and loosen up the damp defense, because certainly do not want to browns team.
45:48
[SPEAKER_01]: going to cover zero against Huntley.
45:49
[SPEAKER_01]: I'd be very concerned about that and what that might mean.
45:52
[SPEAKER_01]: They have to really meaningful ways to get the ball outside of the, the contents formation quickly with Huntley.
45:58
[SPEAKER_01]: If, if there's any hint that this is going to turn into a big cover zero game.
46:03
[SPEAKER_01]: And there's, there's a couple of ways they can do that, but one that I want to see them test out is getting walker on a fly.
46:10
[SPEAKER_01]: down either side line with single high because that means it's a one-on-one coverage situation and Walker is just too fast for pretty much every defensive or every corner out there right now in the NFL, certainly the corners they're going to face.
46:26
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, and I think, and again, this kind of goes back to the Miss Nomer, I think Walker would potentially,
46:35
[SPEAKER_00]: work out with Huntley because like Huntley I mean probably he's going to kind of pick a spot he's going to chuck it and it's actually going to give Walker maybe a chance to get under it right where we where we've seen you know Jackson really tried to be more precise with his placement in a few times it's come up a little bit short.
46:52
[SPEAKER_00]: It would be it would be funny I mean I won't hold my breath until I see it but it would be kind of funny.
46:57
[SPEAKER_00]: to see Walker and Huntley develop a connection with just an effect that he's just going to try to chuck it and let him get underneath of it.
47:06
[SPEAKER_00]: But yeah, it's kind of what I was looking to earlier, they just, they need to find ways to create those.
47:11
[SPEAKER_00]: There's one on one match.
47:12
[SPEAKER_00]: But I mean, my thing is, too, though, is, you know, if you got, if you got someone like
47:26
[SPEAKER_00]: I just, I can't really see if they're going to his zero coverage, or even a one-high safety.
47:30
[SPEAKER_00]: I trust Huntley to work the corners in the outs.
47:31
[SPEAKER_00]: He doesn't have a strong arm, especially on the outs, but he's shown that he's had the timing to somewhat compensate for it.
47:35
[SPEAKER_00]: I almost, I don't know what to do, but I don't know what to do, but I don't know what to do.
47:38
[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know what to do.
47:40
[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know what to do, but I don't know what to do.
47:41
[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know what to do, but I don't know what to do.
47:43
[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know what to do.
47:44
[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know what to do.
47:47
[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know, maybe I shouldn't say this because it's such an important game, but I'm almost wishing that this week that they just would have tried doing a little bit more and maybe it is just him.
47:56
[SPEAKER_00]: Maybe he really is gun shy, isn't doing, you know, taking those plays, but like I said, this week at Landa or this week Cleola.
48:04
[SPEAKER_00]: This week at Atlanta, I kind of wish that they would have tried to incorporate a little more just because it wasn't as much as a meaningful game.
48:15
[SPEAKER_00]: is good to come back, you know, obviously we don't know, we just kind of go, but yeah, I feel like there's things that they could push him into, hopefully doing that would, would help against something that could cover zero.
48:27
[SPEAKER_00]: I just we haven't seen it done.
48:30
[SPEAKER_01]: So the major thing that the ravens would be trying to do to, if they try to run fly routes or whatever verticals they want to run with Walker,
48:39
[SPEAKER_01]: If they're going to be trying to loosen up that defense, the Atlanta defense is playing a lot of too high and they have two of the best ball hoax in the national football league playing together on the back end.
48:48
[SPEAKER_01]: If they're willing to do that and they're giving you free reign to kind of go underneath and find the weakness of the defense behind the linebackers.
48:55
[SPEAKER_01]: go ahead and take that.
48:56
[SPEAKER_01]: I don't have a problem, so I think some of it was schematic this week.
48:59
[SPEAKER_01]: This next week, you know, Delpit is a guy who doesn't necessarily want to stay back and either is Hickman.
49:04
[SPEAKER_01]: They're both guys who, you know, you could have some single high, could even have some cover zero, and they'll be opportunities to go after the middle of the field deep or go after man coverage.
49:14
[SPEAKER_01]: I think this is the week you've got to try and have Huntly out throw the defense and see if Walker can run under it.
49:21
[SPEAKER_01]: And Walker, by the way, two really big catches in this game deserves a shout out for it.
49:26
[SPEAKER_01]: I'm going to bring up when we talk about the individual players.
49:28
[SPEAKER_01]: But wow, those were two routes that were very, very important as part of the Raven's win, that were not Walker or standard routes at all.
49:41
[SPEAKER_01]: It comes back to the ball.
49:43
[SPEAKER_00]: The first one I wasn't like I really was not thinking it was him.
49:47
[SPEAKER_00]: I went back when I was looking through the footage and just like, oh, I didn't realize that it catch before they touched out.
49:52
[SPEAKER_00]: I really thought that was the first one.
49:55
[SPEAKER_01]: uh... did a good job of shortening this game of against it land i i think huntley in terms of his game management certainly deserves a shout out for that and so does doil uh... you know do it doil said some things about wanting to hot explosives and not really grinding is not really as thing he's looking for plays a game ten yards and what not and and i look i want to have all of i can of that
50:17
[SPEAKER_01]: but you know what the Ravens really needed in that overtime for example was a really grinding massive drive and they put it together at just the right time.
50:26
[SPEAKER_01]: And honestly in a lot of ways Huntley is just the right quarterback to do it.
50:28
[SPEAKER_01]: Lamar is going to pick up some chunks in a drive like that and take advantage of things and you know Huntley, you know
50:36
[SPEAKER_00]: The best of them I could have done is scored a touch down the same and I'm sure they would have gone for one so they got the absolute apex result out of that It just they probably did it more efficiently with Huntley in terms of the time rolled off the clock Yeah, I funny like years ago, I just this is such a big thing that came up is I took exactly what I called Huntley I was like I said Huntley is a surprisingly more efficient
51:05
[SPEAKER_00]: just that kind of grind.
51:06
[SPEAKER_00]: And I probably didn't add enough to it because people just heard a vision only.
51:10
[SPEAKER_00]: But yeah, I think like I said, I think he has the ability to live in there, it's just, as we mentioned earlier, one monkey range kind of can potentially ruin that entire scheme for that drive.
51:20
[SPEAKER_00]: So it's a given take.
51:22
[SPEAKER_01]: It's two things we need to learn if you interact at all with the Twitter verse in this town.
51:26
[SPEAKER_01]: And I'm not accusing the people who listen to this show of being part of that group.
51:30
[SPEAKER_01]: So I mean, be clear about that.
51:34
[SPEAKER_01]: If you say anything bad about Lamar Jackson, you're a horrible person, you're probably a racist, you know, and you've got to be really careful.
51:43
[SPEAKER_01]: Any criticism is really unwelcome in this town for Lamar.
51:47
[SPEAKER_01]: And I don't like Lamar Clarces either.
51:49
[SPEAKER_01]: I go to the barber.
51:50
[SPEAKER_01]: I hear his sidekick, you know, the guy owns the business with talk about Lamar Jackson.
51:54
[SPEAKER_01]: I can't stand listening to him.
51:56
[SPEAKER_01]: So, you know, it's stuff I don't want to hear, but I will say this that, you know, there's also some rabbi who's going on and you're talking about an injury and people say you're blaming a lar for his injury kind of thing.
52:09
[SPEAKER_01]: I just know that's not what I'm saying.
52:11
[SPEAKER_01]: I'm as upset as introduced anybody else.
52:13
[SPEAKER_01]: You know, it's, and yes, I do think it was partly the offensive line.
52:16
[SPEAKER_01]: And yes, you know, like, I'll hope a bunch of other things.
52:18
[SPEAKER_01]: But, you know, you can
52:20
[SPEAKER_01]: The Ravens office is crippled with our Jackson's, the only point I'm really making about it, including what happened basically between the goal post ends of the season and beginning of the season this last year.
52:30
[SPEAKER_01]: You just have to qualify everything, so much, you can't even have a discussion about it.
52:35
[SPEAKER_00]: And, no, I was gonna say it's just so difficult because the space that we live in so often is text, and you don't have that, that's good point.
52:45
[SPEAKER_00]: Back and forth, to make that nuance,
52:50
[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, I always, like I said, I'm often critical of Jackson, but it's only because I have that additional expectation not only for him as a Raven, but also for the ability that I know that he has.
53:03
[SPEAKER_00]: So yeah, I mean, I'm probably going to say I'm over critical of times, but it's only again because I know what he's capable of.
53:11
[SPEAKER_00]: With that said, like I said, yeah, it's true.
53:14
[SPEAKER_00]: Like sometimes there are like he went through a time that he didn't like checking down.
53:19
[SPEAKER_00]: He went through a time where he didn't like getting rid of the ball.
53:22
[SPEAKER_00]: He still has that sometimes.
53:23
[SPEAKER_00]: He's getting progressively better at it.
53:25
[SPEAKER_00]: That doesn't make him a good or bad quarterback.
53:28
[SPEAKER_00]: Like I said, it's just an aspect of his game that you have to play it around and deal with.
53:33
[SPEAKER_00]: So just little things like that.
53:35
[SPEAKER_00]: It's
53:35
[SPEAKER_00]: It's not a negative against him.
53:37
[SPEAKER_00]: It is a characteristic of him that he compensates in other ways.
53:41
[SPEAKER_01]: Yes.
53:43
[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, every time I feel we'd get to the other things, we need to reinforce the fact that Lamar Jackson is 68 spot to low on the NFL top 100 list.
53:53
[SPEAKER_01]: And he's the only guy I'm sure of, the exact number of spots he's too low on that ranking.
53:58
[SPEAKER_01]: He's the only one I'm sure of.
54:00
[SPEAKER_01]: So he is number one and a very lucky to have him as a team, but let's talk to Tyler Huntley a little bit what happened in this game.
54:06
[SPEAKER_01]: The rush by numbers, they sent a lot of four man rush against him, but they really actually invested fairly heavily in numbers.
54:14
[SPEAKER_01]: And some of that was came later.
54:16
[SPEAKER_01]: They were not getting to him as much as they probably wanted to with four and more than that over the last two drives.
54:22
[SPEAKER_01]: They were just having a lot of difficulty stopping in period.
54:24
[SPEAKER_01]: He was completing pass after pass.
54:29
[SPEAKER_01]: of the 35 passes slash sacks that he had.
54:33
[SPEAKER_01]: Remember, flowers also had that sack.
54:36
[SPEAKER_01]: 15 to the 35 times, 40% they rushed five or six, which is very high.
54:41
[SPEAKER_01]: Big commitment overall of players there, and it was kind of interesting.
54:46
[SPEAKER_01]: The Ravens only used a very limited number of set and shipwalks, only 16 in the whole game.
54:51
[SPEAKER_01]: So they really were very conservative in terms of not wasting their eligible receivers to try and max protect or give him protection that might have helped against additional pass rushers to put it that way.
55:07
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I'm assuming, you know, we're going to talk about him getting the ball out quick.
55:11
[SPEAKER_00]: And I'm going to assume that the lack of chips are really because they, I don't know, trust the right word, but just as soon that, you know, he's going to be getting the ball out quickly outside of that side of the pull it down and going, yeah, but with that said, I don't know exactly how they formulate the, you know, the island radar, whatever you want to call it for our tackles tackles are allegedly left out on their own.
55:35
[SPEAKER_00]: quite a bit.
55:36
[SPEAKER_00]: So it's not necessarily something that's unique to this game.
55:40
[SPEAKER_00]: I just think that in this specific game that probably had more to do with the fact that he's going to get his read and I think we talked about this last year and one of his the Green Bay game, he makes his read, he makes his decision and he's either going to try to get the ball away or more likely he's going to put the ball down and run.
55:56
[SPEAKER_00]: So he's very quick on
55:58
[SPEAKER_00]: those decisions and it very often doesn't give the time for the pressure to develop.
56:03
[SPEAKER_01]: Obviously, it still did someplace, but generally speaking, he's definitely not a big multiple read quarterback.
56:09
[SPEAKER_01]: He's not a guy who's going to go through one, two, three, four of that reads kind of thing.
56:13
[SPEAKER_01]: He's a guy who really wants to have it out on the second read at the latest.
56:17
[SPEAKER_01]: So that is a limitation.
56:20
[SPEAKER_01]: It's who Tyler Huntley is, but that's okay.
56:23
[SPEAKER_01]: I want to talk about ample time and space ball out quick and pressure.
56:26
[SPEAKER_01]: Those are the three components that make up opportunities said.
56:29
[SPEAKER_01]: He had eight ample time and space opportunities in this game.
56:32
[SPEAKER_01]: That's either a three second pocket or it was blocked up to be that way.
56:37
[SPEAKER_01]: Even though the ball is out over generally speaking two seconds is the latest.
56:41
[SPEAKER_01]: Sorry.
56:42
[SPEAKER_01]: the earliest I'll allow the ball to be out relative to the three second time to make sure that the pocket would have held up for three.
56:49
[SPEAKER_01]: He had six of seven complete for 63 yards on those passes.
56:52
[SPEAKER_01]: By the way, that didn't include a sack zero on those ATS throws.
56:55
[SPEAKER_01]: So the not certainly the lines fold 7.9 yards per play on those.
57:00
[SPEAKER_01]: He had 14 times here at the ball out quickly and that's a much higher percentage that it ever is for Jackson.
57:06
[SPEAKER_01]: Last time it was 29 and 2
57:11
[SPEAKER_01]: ball out quick throws, but it was only actually 40% of the total in this game.
57:16
[SPEAKER_01]: It went 12 for 14 on this place, 104 yards, 7.4 yards per place.
57:20
[SPEAKER_01]: So so far in those two categories, no problem, even though the ATS is a little bit maybe lower than would be expected, and then the last category, they got 13 pressures on them, and this speaks to the opportunity set, not being particularly good.
57:32
[SPEAKER_01]: The pressure rate,
57:34
[SPEAKER_01]: is not super high, but it's that 13 to 8 relationship between pressures in ATS and you add another one, another pressure on the
57:43
[SPEAKER_01]: Lower is sac, it's not a, it's not a really, it's not a good relationship between those two things.
57:49
[SPEAKER_01]: You'd like that to be about 1.2 to 1 and then you're happy.
57:52
[SPEAKER_01]: If you're 1.1 to 1, you're, you're thrilled.
57:56
[SPEAKER_01]: And if anything better than that, boy, are you thrilled, but you completed six of those 11 passes for a total of 18 net yards and 1.4 yards per play.
58:04
[SPEAKER_01]: So like all quarterbacks he had a lot of trouble with with pressure, but I would say he should get about three and a half yards per play on those and he was about, you know, two yards per play below that for 13 of his 35th row.
58:15
[SPEAKER_01]: So it's actually a fairly significant contributor to his under performance of his opportunity set, which was a net of 13 yards, not terrible.
58:24
[SPEAKER_01]: 185 net yards he had and 198 were expected given that opportunity set.
58:29
[SPEAKER_01]: So he came and short by about point four yards per play and it will say you can take a lot you could take a lot more than point four below your expectation if you have no turnovers which that's exactly what it did in this game and really kind of a low variance game for huntly in a lot of ways it was a lot of short completed passes and in a lot of ways that's better for an
58:53
[SPEAKER_00]: And it's something I want to touch on where we talk, we're about to run, but I definitely, as a whole felt like you got the ball out a lot.
59:06
[SPEAKER_00]: I did recognize that we do see pressure a little bit difference like something that I consider what I call a pocket squeeze.
59:13
[SPEAKER_00]: You'll oftentimes consider pressure.
59:16
[SPEAKER_00]: I'll talk more about it specifically with Stanley later.
59:19
[SPEAKER_00]: But yeah, he definitely had a lot of tight pockets this game to spite him getting the ball I quickly.
59:26
[SPEAKER_00]: And again, I'm curious to know, I have an idea why Stanley, but the rest of the line, it really felt like they had that internal clock of we're getting the ball out quick, give a little bit of ground, try to put your foot in the ground and then let him get the ball out.
59:43
[SPEAKER_00]: So there seemed to be a little more give than usual.
59:49
[SPEAKER_00]: that may have just kind of been a visual trick because he doesn't quite drop back as far as Jack.
59:55
[SPEAKER_00]: So I guess it was an interesting it was an interesting thing we'll talk more about later but it was the interesting observations regarding that.
1:00:02
[SPEAKER_01]: They've each got their own drift.
1:00:03
[SPEAKER_01]: Jackson is more of a back drifter and Huntley is more of a left-right drifter which we saw some in this game too and some of that comes off the snap but we're going to get to that in part two.
1:00:12
[SPEAKER_01]: Jacob
1:00:18
[SPEAKER_01]: Contact you online if they have a question about football.
1:00:21
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, for the most part, just just on the reddit under the handle Sputan 89 SPIT and eight nine.
1:00:27
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, for the most part, you'll see me posting there a lot.
1:00:31
[SPEAKER_00]: You always drop by and say, hey,
1:00:34
[SPEAKER_01]: I highly recommend the Reddit community, by the way, made a lot of new friends over there, since I've been posting there fairly regularly.
1:00:40
[SPEAKER_01]: And just very good football fans, I think there was a time a few years ago when the site had kind of a bad reputation over some of the book out and crap all up.
1:00:48
[SPEAKER_01]: But honestly, it's a very mature, very well-spoken group that has good questions and good high-level discourse over there, so I would highly recommend it.
1:00:58
[SPEAKER_01]: Whether you're on a board or not, you love this could be your second board kind of thing at a minimum.
1:01:03
[SPEAKER_01]: Other folks out there please use film study mailbag at gmail.com for your questions.
1:01:07
[SPEAKER_01]: We'll get to them in the second half of this show and we'll talk to you next time on film study.
