Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Welcome into another episode of Inside the Charge Matti Lab
- 0:03Speaker 1: alongside of defensive tackle day Kwon Jones, who's with us today.
- 0:07Speaker 2: We're going to talk cornhole, We're.
- 0:08Speaker 1: Going to talk football, We're going to talk travel and
- 0:11Speaker 1: cover it also, daik One, thank you so much for
- 0:13Speaker 1: being on today.
- 0:14Speaker 3: Thank you for having me. I appreciate it.
- 0:15Speaker 1: All right, let's get into it, dayk One. You guys
- 0:26Speaker 1: are in OTAs right now. Lots of new faces on
- 0:30Speaker 1: this roster, especially on the defensive side of the football.
- 0:34Speaker 1: You've been added a few weeks with these guys, so
- 0:36Speaker 1: you're starting to get to know the new faces a
- 0:38Speaker 1: little bit. What do you think has been your biggest
- 0:41Speaker 1: takeaway from this new look Bills.
- 0:45Speaker 4: At the defense side of the ball. I can just
- 0:47Speaker 4: say the eagerness to learn. I feel like everyone's uh
- 0:51Speaker 4: just trying to like understand what they have to do
- 0:53Speaker 4: so they don't fall it too far behind. We got
- 0:55Speaker 4: a lot of new faces, a lot of new young guys,
- 0:57Speaker 4: especially on the D line, So the eagerness.
- 1:00Speaker 3: Every day in that meetroom, everyone's trying to learn.
- 1:02Speaker 4: And I like it because you know, in our room,
- 1:04Speaker 4: everyone asking me questions every day, which wasn't really a
- 1:08Speaker 4: thing we did in the last couple of years. So
- 1:09Speaker 4: just having a better understanding for the defense and what
- 1:12Speaker 4: they want and how we want to execute it.
- 1:15Speaker 3: It goes a long way, and I really enjoy that part.
- 1:17Speaker 2: You're an ultravat.
- 1:18Speaker 1: You've been in this league ten plus years now, So
- 1:21Speaker 1: when it comes to these newer guys asking questions, do
- 1:26Speaker 1: you chuckle at all to yourself just remembering what it
- 1:28Speaker 1: used to be like being a rookie or someone who
- 1:32Speaker 1: was in a new defense.
- 1:34Speaker 4: You know, I think back to my first time in
- 1:36Speaker 4: Tennessee when I got drafted and it was like a
- 1:39Speaker 4: field book. I mean, no one really trying to talk
- 1:41Speaker 4: with your technique or really anything because it was such
- 1:44Speaker 4: a grammy business back then. Everyone want to like, you know,
- 1:47Speaker 4: you're trying to fight for another man's job. But the
- 1:49Speaker 4: open is here to kind of how you know, we
- 1:51Speaker 4: want everyone to be better. We know what the end
- 1:53Speaker 4: goal is. We want want a championship, and we can
- 1:55Speaker 4: only do that when everyone is on the same page
- 1:58Speaker 4: and we know what to do. And right now we
- 1:59Speaker 4: don't know with who or what those pieces are going
- 2:02Speaker 4: to be in the fall or turning camp, So make
- 2:04Speaker 4: sure everyone knows what they have to do is critical
- 2:06Speaker 4: and just thinking back in Tennessee, I don't really have
- 2:09Speaker 4: that luxury and had to go out there and kind
- 2:11Speaker 4: of you earn it the hard way, But eventually I
- 2:14Speaker 4: had to some of the older guys thinking under the wing.
- 2:16Speaker 4: After that, you know, that's all I can do. But
- 2:18Speaker 4: hear from the get go, I think everyone's here to
- 2:20Speaker 4: share knowledge and make sure they're on the same page.
- 2:22Speaker 3: Then go out there to a high level.
- 2:23Speaker 2: That's really cool.
- 2:24Speaker 1: I mean walking into an environment where newer faces and
- 2:28Speaker 1: younger players can feel like I'm not walking into somewhere
- 2:31Speaker 1: that's hostile. I'm not walking into somewhere where I feel
- 2:34Speaker 1: like I really have to prove myself. Yes, I want
- 2:36Speaker 1: to work hard, but I also can ask questions and
- 2:39Speaker 1: be open and honest with the guys in the rooms.
- 2:42Speaker 1: That has to start somewhere, and it probably starts with
- 2:44Speaker 1: the older players.
- 2:46Speaker 2: How have you?
- 2:47Speaker 1: And and maybe Vaughn and some other guys in the defensive
- 2:50Speaker 1: line room really set that up to where these guys
- 2:52Speaker 1: walk in and they're feeling like, oh, this guy wants
- 2:57Speaker 1: wants me to play my best here.
- 2:58Speaker 3: Yeah, I really just talking to him in the meeting.
- 3:02Speaker 4: If the coach is going over a detail, going to
- 3:04Speaker 4: play and you know, if I see something that you know,
- 3:06Speaker 4: one of the young guys can do, I'll I'll like,
- 3:08Speaker 4: you know, go over to the seat and tell them
- 3:09Speaker 4: what I see and and kind of go back and
- 3:12Speaker 4: just trying to feed them low information as much as
- 3:15Speaker 4: I can in the meet and do what the meeting
- 3:16Speaker 4: for what I see, even like today, you know, just
- 3:19Speaker 4: telling the guys, you know, just take the time. I mean,
- 3:21Speaker 4: I know, I know they're gonna get you know, the
- 3:22Speaker 4: coach is gonna.
- 3:23Speaker 3: Be under butt about, you know, doing the small things
- 3:25Speaker 3: and running around and I'm like, just take take a
- 3:27Speaker 3: deep breath.
- 3:28Speaker 4: Understand it's part of the part of the job of
- 3:30Speaker 4: being a young guy. But at the same time, just
- 3:34Speaker 4: we have enough time from now to training camp to
- 3:36Speaker 4: kind of along you gotta learn and you kind of
- 3:38Speaker 4: you can learn at your own pace and kind of
- 3:39Speaker 4: just take a deep breath and let it come to you.
- 3:42Speaker 1: It's also nice when there's not several cuts throughout the
- 3:44Speaker 1: off season. These guys can actually learn the playbook, play
- 3:47Speaker 1: the preseason games and then figure out, Okay, am I
- 3:50Speaker 1: on the roster or am I not on the roster?
- 3:52Speaker 1: You also re signed with the Bills this off season
- 3:55Speaker 1: on a two year deal. Why did you want to
- 3:57Speaker 1: stay in Buffalo?
- 3:58Speaker 3: I mean I just loved it.
- 4:00Speaker 4: I mean when I signed here and I, uh, you know,
- 4:03Speaker 4: got the kind of taste of the scheme and what
- 4:05Speaker 4: we do.
- 4:06Speaker 3: I just fell in love with that.
- 4:07Speaker 4: And the you know, the icing on the cake is
- 4:09Speaker 4: the fan the fan base, and you know what what
- 4:12Speaker 4: this team means the Buffalo and vice versa. It's hard
- 4:16Speaker 4: to match that anywhere else. And I'm comfortable here.
- 4:18Speaker 3: I have a relationship with all.
- 4:21Speaker 4: The coaches and players, and it would just start all
- 4:24Speaker 4: that backup and getting.
- 4:24Speaker 3: Going somewhere else. I mean, it didn't make sense to me.
- 4:27Speaker 4: So when they came came knock and it was it
- 4:29Speaker 4: was an easy decision.
- 4:31Speaker 1: Austin Johnson is now a part of the defensive line room.
- 4:35Speaker 1: He it was somebody that you played with when you
- 4:38Speaker 1: were in Tennessee for I want to say four seasons
- 4:40Speaker 1: together and when he when it was announced that he
- 4:43Speaker 1: was going to become a Buffalo Bill, we saw that
- 4:46Speaker 1: you celebrated that signing. Seemed like you had a little
- 4:50Speaker 1: played a little part in getting him to Buffalo.
- 4:53Speaker 2: What is Austin Johnson.
- 4:54Speaker 1: What is that relationship like with him and how did
- 4:57Speaker 1: you convince him, Hey, hey man, you got to be here.
- 4:59Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, you know, that's like a little brother
- 5:01Speaker 3: to me.
- 5:02Speaker 4: You know, we both had Penn State together, and when
- 5:05Speaker 4: he came in there, I hosted him on his official
- 5:08Speaker 4: and you know, kind of since then, we've kind of
- 5:11Speaker 4: been hitting it off, and you know, we remained close
- 5:13Speaker 4: over the years. Like you said, got drafted at his
- 5:15Speaker 4: draft party and Jersey, I was there when he had
- 5:18Speaker 4: to call from Tennessee.
- 5:19Speaker 3: So that that's pretty cool.
- 5:20Speaker 4: And just for him to call me and tell me
- 5:22Speaker 4: that he had two options and he's leading towards Buffalo
- 5:25Speaker 4: and be able to tell him my part and why
- 5:27Speaker 4: why I chose Buffalo and why I thought Buffalo would
- 5:29Speaker 4: be a good fit for him, and he told me
- 5:31Speaker 4: to think about it, and I think by the end
- 5:33Speaker 4: of that day he called me back and told me
- 5:35Speaker 4: he's gonna sign with Buffalo. So I was very excited
- 5:37Speaker 4: with that. I'm happy he's here. I think he'd be
- 5:39Speaker 4: a great addition on the d line for us. And
- 5:42Speaker 4: I can't say not enything bad about that guy.
- 5:44Speaker 2: One of the reasons why people love playing here.
- 5:47Speaker 1: White players want to re sign here is because of
- 5:49Speaker 1: the culture and a lot of that happens inside the
- 5:52Speaker 1: locker room. Well, when you walk into the locker room here,
- 5:54Speaker 1: you see guys playing ping pong, you see guys playing cornhole,
- 5:57Speaker 1: and you are somebody who is playing cornhole in the
- 6:00Speaker 1: locker room. When did you start playing that game?
- 6:03Speaker 4: I didn't start how I got here really, you know,
- 6:06Speaker 4: Dion Dawkins put me on and I've been hooked ever
- 6:10Speaker 4: since he showed me the game. They yeah there, okay,
- 6:13Speaker 4: my first year here and I fell in love with it,
- 6:15Speaker 4: and you know, we play all the time.
- 6:17Speaker 1: Now did it come easy to you or was it
- 6:20Speaker 1: something you had to work at? I myself played cornhole
- 6:23Speaker 1: for fun, like in the summer at a party, but
- 6:26Speaker 1: I am terrible. I feel like as an NFL athlete,
- 6:29Speaker 1: you're just good at sports.
- 6:31Speaker 2: Was it easy for you? Didn't it take some time?
- 6:33Speaker 4: No?
- 6:33Speaker 3: I I got pretty good.
- 6:35Speaker 4: I mean, Dion, it was hard trying to understand the
- 6:39Speaker 4: game and understand just tossing the bag like it's different,
- 6:42Speaker 4: it's different.
- 6:43Speaker 3: Like this cornhole.
- 6:44Speaker 2: I just want this thing.
- 6:45Speaker 4: Yeah, did the different type of game and just how
- 6:48Speaker 4: to you know, throw the bag and understand the slide
- 6:51Speaker 4: and pushing all the different rules of cornhole. And he
- 6:54Speaker 4: taught me at all and and now I can I
- 6:56Speaker 4: can hone my own with him. And you know, he
- 6:58Speaker 4: invited me to you know, lose like a month ago
- 7:01Speaker 4: to playing that tournament.
- 7:01Speaker 3: I loved it, So I'm a I'm a huge advocate
- 7:04Speaker 3: for it. Now.
- 7:05Speaker 1: Yeah, you guys were on ESPN playing in the Cornhole
- 7:10Speaker 1: League tournament, the American Cornhole League tournament.
- 7:13Speaker 2: What was that like?
- 7:15Speaker 1: Turn on the TV and there are some NFL players
- 7:18Speaker 1: participating in a cornhole tournament.
- 7:20Speaker 4: Yeah, it was kind of nerve wracking walk in there
- 7:23Speaker 4: to a big gym and there's nothing but boards lined
- 7:26Speaker 4: up in teams, you know, warming up and playing. They
- 7:29Speaker 4: played before us, so they were playing all day. But
- 7:32Speaker 4: I mean the amount of talent and that people have.
- 7:36Speaker 3: Playing corn holes crazy.
- 7:37Speaker 4: I mean, the one thing I like about it and
- 7:39Speaker 4: the untouched about it is like, you know, it doesn't
- 7:41Speaker 4: matter how big or small, or or if you if
- 7:43Speaker 4: you're handicapped, now you can still play this game.
- 7:46Speaker 3: That's why it makes you so special.
- 7:47Speaker 4: And you know, going out there and being able to
- 7:50Speaker 4: play up there with with other peers, run the league
- 7:53Speaker 4: and also be able to play against you know, the
- 7:56Speaker 4: a CL's best you know players, was really cool experience.
- 8:00Speaker 2: How did you guys do in the tournament?
- 8:01Speaker 3: My team one?
- 8:02Speaker 4: Yeah, my team one h My partner was Blaine and
- 8:06Speaker 4: it came down to me and Blaine for Dion and
- 8:10Speaker 4: Adrian and we won.
- 8:11Speaker 2: That's awesome. Okay, explain the throw?
- 8:14Speaker 1: How do you do it? How do you toss it?
- 8:16Speaker 1: Everybody's got their own spin to it. I'm sure what
- 8:19Speaker 1: is what is the uh the key pieces of putting
- 8:22Speaker 1: a toss together for you?
- 8:25Speaker 4: For me, in my mind, I think like I'm going
- 8:27Speaker 4: bowling like it's a little opposite, but you have to
- 8:30Speaker 4: turn that way. But like if you're trying to go
- 8:32Speaker 4: for like a corner pin, trying to like turn it out.
- 8:34Speaker 4: So like for me, I just got like toss like
- 8:36Speaker 4: I'm going for like the corner pin and for me,
- 8:39Speaker 4: for me, it goes right out the middle and it
- 8:42Speaker 4: works for me.
- 8:42Speaker 2: Easy piece?
- 8:44Speaker 3: Are you?
- 8:44Speaker 1: Are you somebody who's hot at the start? Are you
- 8:46Speaker 1: a closer? Are you consistent?
- 8:49Speaker 3: I've think I'm a closer.
- 8:50Speaker 4: When I start out, I'm okay, But when I get
- 8:53Speaker 4: warmed up and I'm good, like I can I can
- 8:55Speaker 4: get a four bagger.
- 8:57Speaker 1: That's a who are the top five players in the
- 8:59Speaker 1: locker room? Or are we learning since there are a
- 9:02Speaker 1: lot of new guys on this team.
- 9:04Speaker 4: Yeah, I'm not sure if any of the new guys play,
- 9:06Speaker 4: but I would go I'll go in no particular order.
- 9:11Speaker 4: I'll go Dion, AJ cam Lewis, myself. I mean, dirty
- 9:22Speaker 4: Red Tyler he was he was.
- 9:24Speaker 3: It was good too.
- 9:25Speaker 2: But right now, maybe the fifth spot is open.
- 9:29Speaker 4: Yeah, it might be open because we had a couple
- 9:30Speaker 4: of guys who are not here no more that we're
- 9:32Speaker 4: pretty good.
- 9:33Speaker 3: I think that. I think the fifth spot is open.
- 9:35Speaker 1: Is Dion at the top of the list or do people?
- 9:39Speaker 1: Can people kind of compete with him in there?
- 9:41Speaker 3: I think A J might be the most consistent.
- 9:45Speaker 4: He always does it like down the middle, and I
- 9:48Speaker 4: don't understand how he does it, but he's very consistent,
- 9:51Speaker 4: and I will probably say he's.
- 9:55Speaker 2: Never want to be right now, all right, that's pretty cool.
- 9:58Speaker 1: You've got your second anual Cornhole Classic coming up on
- 10:01Speaker 1: June fifteenth and Binghamton, New York. I want to talk
- 10:04Speaker 1: about that. The proceeds go to athletes to athletes. Why
- 10:07Speaker 1: did you want to have this event.
- 10:10Speaker 4: I mean after I did so, when I got here
- 10:12Speaker 4: and I played cornhole, I really enjoyed it.
- 10:14Speaker 3: And then Dion had an event here I think was
- 10:17Speaker 3: last year.
- 10:18Speaker 4: And I really enjoyed that, and I'm like, yo, I
- 10:20Speaker 4: want you to do something like that back home a hometown.
- 10:24Speaker 4: And so I went home, and I think three weeks
- 10:26Speaker 4: before I did it, I found out there's like two
- 10:28Speaker 4: corn hole leagues that you know, play back home on
- 10:31Speaker 4: Thursday nights and it was pretty packed.
- 10:33Speaker 3: Well we might as well try, and then we did it.
- 10:35Speaker 3: Last year.
- 10:35Speaker 4: We had a great turnout, A lot of people came
- 10:38Speaker 4: did we raised like three thousand dollars for athlete athletes.
- 10:40Speaker 4: And you know this year we have like sixty four
- 10:43Speaker 4: teams already signed up wow to play, so somebody a
- 10:45Speaker 4: long night. It was gonna be a fun night. And
- 10:47Speaker 4: I'm just excited to kind of go out there and
- 10:50Speaker 4: play cornhole.
- 10:51Speaker 1: Going back to the locker room setting, having games in there.
- 10:55Speaker 1: When you have so many new players being introduced to
- 10:58Speaker 1: a locker room, a team, an offense, a defense, new system,
- 11:02Speaker 1: trying to learn things. How does playing cornhole or playing
- 11:06Speaker 1: ping pong help bring this group together?
- 11:09Speaker 2: And also how is it unique to Buffalo.
- 11:11Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean it kind of just it sparks that
- 11:13Speaker 4: that conversation and it just helps you kind of, you know,
- 11:18Speaker 4: get to know your team agy more. I mean, as
- 11:20Speaker 4: you're throwing, you can sit there and have a conversation
- 11:22Speaker 4: about you know, whatever you're going to through, about life,
- 11:25Speaker 4: a but your family, whatever, whatever the case may be.
- 11:27Speaker 3: You got to sit there and talk about it.
- 11:29Speaker 4: And you know, even like today, I mean they were
- 11:31Speaker 4: competing like crazy over that that ping pong and just
- 11:34Speaker 4: one game. I can't play, but you know they're over
- 11:37Speaker 4: there competing and stuff, and just just another way to
- 11:40Speaker 4: kind of drive that competitive edge. And at the end
- 11:42Speaker 4: of the day, I think it makes makes his team
- 11:43Speaker 4: better and it makes the you know, the team going long.
- 11:47Speaker 2: We're in the off season right now.
- 11:48Speaker 1: You guys are coming back and forth here for OTA's
- 11:51Speaker 1: mandatory mini camp is coming up and then you guys
- 11:53Speaker 1: have a big break before training camp.
- 11:56Speaker 2: What have you went up to this off season?
- 11:57Speaker 4: Dayclon, I mean, I've been I've been traveling. I want
- 12:01Speaker 4: two big vacations. I went on a icon of the
- 12:05Speaker 4: seas the cruise line, and that was that was crazy.
- 12:10Speaker 2: He's a cruise guy too.
- 12:11Speaker 4: I didn't go with him, but I tried to recruit
- 12:15Speaker 4: him to go on go on the trip last minute notice,
- 12:18Speaker 4: But yeah, I went on there and it was it
- 12:20Speaker 4: was pretty pretty cool. And then just last week I
- 12:23Speaker 4: went on my dream vacation to so.
- 12:26Speaker 1: Dream vacation because if you go onto your bio, it
- 12:29Speaker 1: says dream vacation spot Bora, Bora, And you made this
- 12:32Speaker 1: happen this off season.
- 12:34Speaker 2: Why did you want to go there? And what was
- 12:37Speaker 2: the best part about that trip?
- 12:40Speaker 4: You know, it was really my my wife dream vacation,
- 12:43Speaker 4: and she told me years ago she wanted to go,
- 12:45Speaker 4: and we tried to go.
- 12:47Speaker 3: I tried to surprise her.
- 12:49Speaker 4: Actually the Coked year, I tried to book a surprise,
- 12:52Speaker 4: but then we shut down, so we had to keep
- 12:54Speaker 4: pushing it off.
- 12:55Speaker 3: And then.
- 12:57Speaker 4: You know, this year with hold, with the whole, the
- 12:59Speaker 4: whole the contract stuff, I kind of book up vacations
- 13:03Speaker 4: now and.
- 13:03Speaker 3: So we can kind of know we gotta go. And
- 13:05Speaker 3: I just looked down line, I'm like, you know.
- 13:07Speaker 4: The heck was surprised they were bar Bora and went
- 13:11Speaker 4: out there, and honestly, I think the best part I've
- 13:13Speaker 4: been out there was actually walking into your to your
- 13:16Speaker 4: to your room, the hut.
- 13:17Speaker 1: The hut was was it like an over the water
- 13:20Speaker 1: hut type of thing over.
- 13:21Speaker 3: The water and have like a pool in it.
- 13:24Speaker 4: And I'm not really an ocean guy, so I was like,
- 13:26Speaker 4: I was happy we had a pool and then I
- 13:28Speaker 4: can just kind of wash the water. So yeah, I
- 13:31Speaker 4: think the rooms were the best, the best thing about
- 13:33Speaker 4: the whole island.
- 13:34Speaker 1: Oh that's amazing. Not an ocean guy because of sharks,
- 13:37Speaker 1: because of what's.
- 13:37Speaker 2: In the ocean.
- 13:40Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, I'm not I'm not a little fish guy.
- 13:42Speaker 3: You know.
- 13:42Speaker 4: I was trying to tell that as a kid, long
- 13:46Speaker 4: story story I had. I had a fish stuck on
- 13:48Speaker 4: my shirt and it was just flopping around.
- 13:50Speaker 3: And it kind of just trying to tell me a
- 13:52Speaker 3: little bit. So I don't really like the water.
- 13:53Speaker 4: I don't like the fish, and uh, you know we
- 13:55Speaker 4: were over there, we saw you know, turtles and steam rays.
- 13:58Speaker 3: You know, it just made me even more harshly about
- 14:00Speaker 3: going in the water. But I really did enjoy it.
- 14:03Speaker 2: That's I totally understand that.
- 14:05Speaker 1: And having an overwater bungalow sounds incredible.
- 14:08Speaker 2: You also said you went on a cruise. Was it
- 14:11Speaker 2: your first cruise?
- 14:13Speaker 3: Second?
- 14:13Speaker 2: One second?
- 14:14Speaker 3: One second?
- 14:14Speaker 4: One yep, And I became a fan of those and
- 14:17Speaker 4: I want to do them yearly and make it like
- 14:20Speaker 4: a family thing, like.
- 14:21Speaker 3: By all my my brothers and my and.
- 14:23Speaker 4: My my nieces and nephews and try to set that
- 14:25Speaker 4: up so so next year we're trying to do going
- 14:28Speaker 4: the Iconic game, but bring off our families.
- 14:31Speaker 1: Cruise people have things that they want to do, things
- 14:34Speaker 1: that they love to do on cruises. If you're if
- 14:36Speaker 1: you've been on a cruise more than once, you know
- 14:38Speaker 1: the lay of the land. What are what are a
- 14:40Speaker 1: few things you have to do when you're on a cruise.
- 14:43Speaker 4: Oh, I would say the icon they had They had
- 14:48Speaker 4: a little pop up ice cream shops that were amazing
- 14:51Speaker 4: and like I probably found myself there with my kids,
- 14:53Speaker 4: like every day. I was blaming on my kids wanting
- 14:56Speaker 4: to go there, but it really me. And if I
- 15:00Speaker 4: would say the food or like it's actually really good.
- 15:02Speaker 4: You can like the food packages and you kind of
- 15:05Speaker 4: kind of eat whatever. I think the highlight Highlight that
- 15:08Speaker 4: have it like a little pizza shop, I forget the
- 15:11Speaker 4: name of it, and it's like twenty oh you can
- 15:14Speaker 4: eatia little little thin slices and I mean it's dangerous now.
- 15:18Speaker 4: And my first one, I went out, I took my dad,
- 15:21Speaker 4: and my dad was there like all night, like we
- 15:24Speaker 4: actually call him one night, like coming down at one
- 15:25Speaker 4: o'clock in the morning.
- 15:26Speaker 3: I got yeah. Yeah, So, I mean it's addicting for sure.
- 15:30Speaker 1: In the off season, are you someone who, Hey, I'm
- 15:33Speaker 1: on the defensive line.
- 15:34Speaker 2: I'm trying to bulk up.
- 15:36Speaker 1: And then when I get back here, I had a
- 15:37Speaker 1: training camp, but I'm I'm going to work on my body.
- 15:40Speaker 1: Is that Are you able to do something like that
- 15:42Speaker 1: so you can hit the pizza shop and the ice
- 15:43Speaker 1: cream shops as much as you want.
- 15:45Speaker 3: Well?
- 15:45Speaker 4: Yeah, Like I trained very hard and the off sudden
- 15:48Speaker 4: back home with my trainer, Kevin, and we we kind
- 15:52Speaker 4: of get after that, and my wife did a great
- 15:54Speaker 4: job with just helping me stay focused on my diet
- 15:57Speaker 4: and and you know, trying to you know, make sure
- 15:59Speaker 4: we're putting the stuff in my body. So I like
- 16:01Speaker 4: to send my back and then like try to cut,
- 16:04Speaker 4: like in this whole month and a half going to camp,
- 16:06Speaker 4: but right now I'm kind of in the cutting phase
- 16:08Speaker 4: and just trying to make sure my body's in the
- 16:09Speaker 4: best shape. You know, every year you got make sure
- 16:12Speaker 4: you do something even better for your body, you know,
- 16:14Speaker 4: going to year eleven. So I'm just trying to, like,
- 16:15Speaker 4: you know, just stay on top of all, you know,
- 16:17Speaker 4: my health and when it comes to my diet, and yeah,
- 16:20Speaker 4: it's take one step further.
- 16:21Speaker 1: What are some new things you are doing, whether it's diet,
- 16:24Speaker 1: whether it's physique wise, whether it's in the weight room
- 16:28Speaker 1: as you approach your eleventh NFL season, because you hear
- 16:31Speaker 1: rookies become you know, second, third, fourth year players and
- 16:34Speaker 1: what they start to say is I'm learning about my body.
- 16:38Speaker 2: I'm learning about treatment.
- 16:39Speaker 1: But then once you get into the double digit years,
- 16:42Speaker 1: you have to double down on that even more.
- 16:44Speaker 4: Yeah, I think it's tough because I go to speak
- 16:47Speaker 4: to myself when I first came in. It's hard when
- 16:49Speaker 4: you have you know, the stream coaches they meet you
- 16:52Speaker 4: and they only see you for a couple of months,
- 16:53Speaker 4: but they're trying to.
- 16:54Speaker 3: Tell you what what your body should be at whatever
- 16:56Speaker 3: it is.
- 16:56Speaker 4: And it takes a while for you to learn your
- 16:58Speaker 4: body in this game and understand like your body kind
- 17:00Speaker 4: of reacts in situations.
- 17:02Speaker 3: So for me, just making sure I'm really make sure.
- 17:07Speaker 4: I eat it's clean as like as I can in
- 17:09Speaker 4: all season could hit to build that habit.
- 17:11Speaker 3: And then when I come here when I'm i'm training
- 17:14Speaker 3: or I'm stretching.
- 17:15Speaker 4: Like working more on like the like the little stuff
- 17:17Speaker 4: more like ankle molds and making sure you get that
- 17:19Speaker 4: inflection in your in your your ankles, get your bend
- 17:21Speaker 4: and the way you move all starts theres so make sure,
- 17:24Speaker 4: like you know, those all primed up and ready to go.
- 17:26Speaker 4: And in the weight room just we're lifting moderate, but
- 17:29Speaker 4: also making sure the details all there and I'm really
- 17:32Speaker 4: working on my form and make sure my overall body's
- 17:35Speaker 4: throwing on.
- 17:35Speaker 3: Just certain parts.
- 17:36Speaker 1: What does eating clean look like to you? What's on
- 17:38Speaker 1: your plate in the off season? What do you have
- 17:40Speaker 1: to avoid?
- 17:41Speaker 4: Yeah, you know so actually I have like a gluten analogies.
- 17:45Speaker 3: I just away from like bread as much as I can.
- 17:48Speaker 3: So easy.
- 17:49Speaker 4: No, it's not that I love. My favorite food is
- 17:53Speaker 4: a burger. I could eat a burger.
- 17:54Speaker 3: Every day of the week.
- 17:56Speaker 2: I could much diner.
- 17:57Speaker 3: Yeah, I can everything I could.
- 17:59Speaker 4: And so for me, like in the morning, I do
- 18:02Speaker 4: like four eggs and some avocado and bacon, and bunches
- 18:05Speaker 4: are lunches it for me are kind of tough.
- 18:06Speaker 3: So I kind of try to do like falt.
- 18:09Speaker 4: A chicken and I can see the salad, and then
- 18:12Speaker 4: for dinner we do like just ground ground beef and riots.
- 18:14Speaker 4: They keep it real simple and kind of like change
- 18:16Speaker 4: your flavors up every other day and kind.
- 18:18Speaker 3: Of keep it going.
- 18:19Speaker 1: Are you cooking? Is your wife cooking? Do you guys
- 18:21Speaker 1: have somebody that helps you.
- 18:23Speaker 4: To teach me to kind of do it myself, But
- 18:26Speaker 4: she does majority of the of the cooking. I'm trying
- 18:31Speaker 4: to do it myself, but she don't come up here
- 18:33Speaker 4: in Ogs, so when I go home, is me doing it,
- 18:36Speaker 4: so just you know, she kind of coached me do
- 18:38Speaker 4: like you know stuff I like how to cook it.
- 18:40Speaker 2: Yeah, that's awesome.
- 18:41Speaker 1: Okay, so you have kids at home, you got a
- 18:44Speaker 1: wife at home. I hear you also have lots of dogs.
- 18:46Speaker 2: Is that correct? What's the number there?
- 18:49Speaker 3: So?
- 18:49Speaker 4: I have four massive four massive four massive as two
- 18:55Speaker 4: they're all presic canarios. Two right now currently live with me.
- 18:59Speaker 4: Two of them right now living with my dog trainer.
- 19:02Speaker 4: Just because of behavior issues, I'm not home, so but
- 19:06Speaker 4: you know, we still take care of them, still love
- 19:07Speaker 4: aut them. So we have two right now living with us,
- 19:10Speaker 4: but we have four at one point.
- 19:11Speaker 2: How big are these dogs about? Like, oh my gosh, yeah,
- 19:17Speaker 2: the big baby that's more than me. That's crazy. Did
- 19:21Speaker 2: you always love those types of dogs?
- 19:23Speaker 1: Is?
- 19:25Speaker 2: Did you always want big dogs in your life?
- 19:27Speaker 1: Because there's people who are small dog people big dog people.
- 19:30Speaker 4: I had a pipoll my first people passed away last
- 19:32Speaker 4: year and I my first dog I had, and I
- 19:35Speaker 4: loved them, and AWAYS wanted like a you know, kind
- 19:38Speaker 4: of a bigger dog.
- 19:39Speaker 3: And when I picked up these puppies back in.
- 19:42Speaker 4: Eighteen, like I wanted the two boys, but then the
- 19:45Speaker 4: female was like attached to the other ones, so like I'm.
- 19:48Speaker 3: Like, God, got to take of that.
- 19:50Speaker 4: I bought the three puppies at one time, and you know,
- 19:53Speaker 4: I had a an older master at the time that
- 19:55Speaker 4: bought when I was still in Tennessee, and they all
- 19:59Speaker 4: got along great. And then obviously when the whole dynamic
- 20:02Speaker 4: if you're leaving the house and it's on the compete,
- 20:06Speaker 4: but you know, they kind of got out of hand.
- 20:07Speaker 4: But we still keep on all four of them and
- 20:10Speaker 4: make sure they're all in good health. But you have
- 20:12Speaker 4: two live with now and doing good.
- 20:13Speaker 1: So the two that live with you, now, how much
- 20:15Speaker 1: attention do two huge dogs need not allowed.
- 20:19Speaker 4: They're very they're very docile, They're very Yeah, they're very uh,
- 20:23Speaker 4: very lazy dogs that they sit there and they kind
- 20:25Speaker 4: of lay around all day, but you know they go
- 20:27Speaker 4: outside and run around and have a have a blast
- 20:30Speaker 4: and all that.
- 20:31Speaker 3: Now that they're very easy going dogs, that's pretty cool.
- 20:34Speaker 1: I also want to talk about some things that you
- 20:35Speaker 1: have going back on at home, because you have this
- 20:39Speaker 1: Cornhole Classic coming up, but you also have a place
- 20:41Speaker 1: called the Legacy Lounge back in Bantam.
- 20:44Speaker 2: Why did you want to open up something like that?
- 20:47Speaker 4: Yeah, you know, just one of them drinks again, like
- 20:49Speaker 4: I always have these uh you know, like popcorn brain.
- 20:54Speaker 4: I think about what I want and all from an
- 20:57Speaker 4: early age, I there was like a couple of things
- 20:59Speaker 4: that I had to crawl off my bucket list and
- 21:00Speaker 4: it was like, you know, dogs, nice house, acreage, and
- 21:04Speaker 4: you know, I wanted to own like my own like
- 21:06Speaker 4: liquor lone one day and the opportunity came and presented
- 21:10Speaker 4: itself to me a couple of years ago, and I
- 21:12Speaker 4: jumped on it. And we've opened now for like two
- 21:14Speaker 4: and a half years and it's been a huge learning
- 21:18Speaker 4: curve for me. But I truly do love and enjoy
- 21:22Speaker 4: and I's wanting to get back to my community. I
- 21:24Speaker 4: mean we have Irish pub, which is then an Irish pub,
- 21:28Speaker 4: but that's all we had back home.
- 21:29Speaker 3: You wanted to bring a different type of uh you know,
- 21:33Speaker 3: nightlife out there.
- 21:34Speaker 2: So it's a hit so far.
- 21:35Speaker 3: Yeah, we we we.
- 21:36Speaker 4: The first year was was great, obviously, learning through the
- 21:39Speaker 4: whole employee phase and growing through that, and but we're
- 21:43Speaker 4: doing good.
- 21:44Speaker 3: We're on track to have a positive year this year,
- 21:46Speaker 3: so I really can't complaining.
- 21:48Speaker 2: You also have a podcast and a lifestyle vlog.
- 21:50Speaker 1: I mean, you have things going on in your life
- 21:52Speaker 1: outside of playing for the Buffalo Bills, which a lot
- 21:56Speaker 1: of players, especially vets like yourself, start to focus on,
- 22:00Speaker 1: all right, what else do I have going on for myself?
- 22:02Speaker 1: Why do you feel like it's important to have a
- 22:06Speaker 1: legacy lounge, to to have a podcast and a lifestyle vlog,
- 22:10Speaker 1: to have other things happening at the.
- 22:12Speaker 4: Same time, Uh, to kind of learn yourself. I mean,
- 22:16Speaker 4: you don't know what you what you like, and you
- 22:18Speaker 4: know we talk about every day that we you know,
- 22:19Speaker 4: we're not just football players out here, We're human beings,
- 22:22Speaker 4: and you know, the NFL's things for one thing not
- 22:25Speaker 4: for long, and you have to figure out what you're
- 22:27Speaker 4: going to do after. So when my time comes, when
- 22:30Speaker 4: I hang up the cleats, I want to be able
- 22:32Speaker 4: to have a different type of avenue that can go
- 22:34Speaker 4: down and stuff that I enjoy that kind of keep
- 22:36Speaker 4: me entertained that can do at the football.
- 22:38Speaker 3: So I'm just trying to figure.
- 22:38Speaker 4: Out, like what I like to do, and if I
- 22:41Speaker 4: do like it, keep in my back pocket and kind
- 22:42Speaker 4: of keep building over the time.
- 22:44Speaker 3: So when I do say, you know, goodbye to the game,
- 22:46Speaker 3: I have something to roll into.
- 22:48Speaker 1: Is there anything that's at the top of your list
- 22:50Speaker 1: right now that you've you've kind of dipped your toe
- 22:53Speaker 1: into and you're like, hey, this this would be really
- 22:55Speaker 1: cool to pursue Whenever I hang up the.
- 22:58Speaker 4: Cleats, I really do like the podcasting and lifestyle. I
- 23:04Speaker 4: think I want to get my story out there more often.
- 23:07Speaker 4: I'm trying to trying to be more vulnerable and open up.
- 23:11Speaker 4: Never been a fan of the camera or the microphone,
- 23:13Speaker 4: but I'm trying to do a great job. I'm trying
- 23:16Speaker 4: to push myself and kind of just growing with a
- 23:18Speaker 4: person in that area. And I think last year when
- 23:21Speaker 4: when I first did, I really enjoyed it.
- 23:23Speaker 3: I learned a lot.
- 23:24Speaker 4: And then this year we're working on a lot of
- 23:26Speaker 4: good stuff and just trying to keep on pursuing that.
- 23:29Speaker 2: Where can people find that stuff?
- 23:31Speaker 4: Yeah, so my lifestyle page, podcast page, you see why legacy,
- 23:36Speaker 4: it's on that, on I G and on YouTube.
- 23:40Speaker 3: I think you follow me there. It's tagged my bio
- 23:42Speaker 3: on my personal page.
- 23:44Speaker 1: So yeah, you said, uh, you're checking off these boxes
- 23:48Speaker 1: of you know, the dogs, the kids, the house, the acreage,
- 23:53Speaker 1: the lounge.
- 23:55Speaker 2: What else is what else is on that list that
- 23:57Speaker 2: you're going to check off?
- 23:59Speaker 3: You know?
- 23:59Speaker 4: One of my one my biggest goals is to you know,
- 24:02Speaker 4: double double the amount of money I made they're in
- 24:04Speaker 4: football outside of football, just to prove to myself that,
- 24:08Speaker 4: you know, I can, I can continue to be successful
- 24:12Speaker 4: and make the amount of money I would be playing
- 24:15Speaker 4: football outside.
- 24:16Speaker 3: So my next goal is to.
- 24:19Speaker 4: Find ways to generate you know, income for me and
- 24:22Speaker 4: my family, to telling myself to make it much I
- 24:25Speaker 4: did play in the league.
- 24:26Speaker 1: That's awesome and I think that's so smart that so
- 24:28Speaker 1: many players nowadays are focusing on It's not taking away
- 24:32Speaker 1: from the game, but they're also focusing on life outside
- 24:35Speaker 1: of football to set themselves and their families up for
- 24:38Speaker 1: success for the rest of their lives. I want to
- 24:40Speaker 1: finish off by some rapid fire questions about the defensive
- 24:44Speaker 1: line room, because there's a lot of new faces that
- 24:48Speaker 1: we're all trying to learn right now. And I'm sure
- 24:50Speaker 1: you guys are too. You know them way better than
- 24:52Speaker 1: I do. But I know you guys are building those
- 24:54Speaker 1: relationships right now. So who is the funniest guy in
- 24:58Speaker 1: the defensive line room?
- 25:02Speaker 3: Hmmm? Probably me? I get that.
- 25:07Speaker 4: Yeah, I'll go, I'll go me, And then like funny
- 25:11Speaker 4: but not trying to be funny is like, he's not
- 25:15Speaker 4: like trying to be funny.
- 25:15Speaker 2: But he's just like what is what does he do
- 25:17Speaker 2: that's not funny? But it is?
- 25:19Speaker 3: He just I don't like to say it's just uh,
- 25:26Speaker 3: I don't know if I can say it.
- 25:28Speaker 1: I'm not gonna say it because for me, he just
- 25:31Speaker 1: looks like, you know, gentle giant, the nicest guy. He's tall,
- 25:34Speaker 1: he's big, he's a defensive line and.
- 25:38Speaker 2: He just goes about his life.
- 25:39Speaker 3: And I don't know a good way to put it's
- 25:43Speaker 3: in the anime. He's just like very I don't know
- 25:49Speaker 3: a good word for it.
- 25:51Speaker 4: He just you wouldn't get that vibe that he's like
- 25:53Speaker 4: a funny guy or like the jokes, but it's how
- 25:55Speaker 4: he how he comes back from like a joke on
- 26:00Speaker 4: back or something like that, Like it's just how he
- 26:01Speaker 4: says it.
- 26:02Speaker 3: And then like in minnerism, it's just it's funny.
- 26:05Speaker 1: So I would say Greg second, well, we love Greg
- 26:07Speaker 1: over here, so that's hilarious. You also mentioned yourself, are
- 26:13Speaker 1: you the are you cracking jokes? What are you doing
- 26:16Speaker 1: that people are saying, Q, You're funny?
- 26:19Speaker 3: Yeah, I am, I'm cracking jokes.
- 26:20Speaker 4: And then like I don't like my thing is that
- 26:22Speaker 4: don't mess up because like the tension in the room
- 26:25Speaker 4: can be kind of high, which is like okay the
- 26:27Speaker 4: camp like nobody wants to totally yeah, but if you
- 26:29Speaker 4: mess up, like.
- 26:30Speaker 3: I'm gonna give you, I'm gonna give you a look,
- 26:32Speaker 3: or I'm.
- 26:32Speaker 4: Gonna make a comment and I'm gonna say something put
- 26:34Speaker 4: in a joke away to kind of lighten up like
- 26:35Speaker 4: light in the room because we get just too worked
- 26:38Speaker 4: up over that stuff. And so like I kind of
- 26:40Speaker 4: just fire off on people all the time, and people
- 26:42Speaker 4: thought like a guy here, like, I'm quiet, I don't talk.
- 26:45Speaker 3: I'm like I I'm a jokester.
- 26:47Speaker 1: At the end of the day, you got guys who
- 26:48Speaker 1: are fighting for their jobs in that room, and sometimes
- 26:51Speaker 1: you need somebody to throw a joke in there once
- 26:55Speaker 1: in a while because it can get I'm sure it
- 26:57Speaker 1: can get very serious sometimes.
- 26:59Speaker 4: I mean because just like you know, if someone gets
- 27:01Speaker 4: dumped in the ground, you look at them as like, buddy,
- 27:05Speaker 4: you know you can't, you can't.
- 27:06Speaker 3: Do that, and like it just kind of lightens the
- 27:08Speaker 3: mood of the room and everyone's so it's just it's
- 27:12Speaker 3: a good time.
- 27:13Speaker 1: Who's the most serious guy on the defensive line? Is
- 27:20Speaker 1: there somebody who is not cracking jokes?
- 27:28Speaker 3: No?
- 27:29Speaker 4: I mean I feel like the actual other people they
- 27:32Speaker 4: might say me as well, but like I feel like, uh,
- 27:35Speaker 4: I thought we all meshed pretty well together. No one's
- 27:39Speaker 4: kind of no one's kind of not cracking jokes.
- 27:42Speaker 3: I mean no, I think everyone. I think everyone kind
- 27:46Speaker 3: of by then and we all we all do it.
- 27:49Speaker 2: Who's the most interesting player on the defensive line?
- 27:54Speaker 3: I'll say probably it.
- 27:57Speaker 1: Because he's posting videos on the first going twenty two
- 28:00Speaker 1: miles per hour.
- 28:01Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean, he's a you never know you're gonna
- 28:04Speaker 4: get with him. You know, he's he's he's a character,
- 28:06Speaker 4: but he's a great guy. But you never know what's
- 28:09Speaker 4: gonna come buy of his mouth or or what are
- 28:12Speaker 4: you thinking.
- 28:13Speaker 2: So I would say, for sure, it's always a surprise
- 28:16Speaker 2: with Ed. Yeah, you don't know you're gonna get You
- 28:18Speaker 2: gotta have somebody like that, that's amazing.
- 28:20Speaker 3: Sure.
- 28:21Speaker 2: What are three words to describe the vibe in the
- 28:24Speaker 2: defensive line room?
- 28:28Speaker 4: Okay, funny, the vie, funny, relaxed, and brotherhood. I feel like,
- 28:38Speaker 4: I mean, we're just we're all so close, even though
- 28:41Speaker 4: the new guy's getting here, like we we just we
- 28:43Speaker 4: brought them in and and really it feels like none
- 28:46Speaker 4: really changing that.
- 28:47Speaker 3: Room other than we're teaching and developing. But yeah, I
- 28:51Speaker 3: think brotherhood. Uh, funny, we're all just very you know,
- 28:54Speaker 3: relaxed and laying back at the end of the day.
- 28:56Speaker 1: Who's somebody that you you saw them play last year
- 29:00Speaker 1: and didn't have to be on the team. That's not
- 29:02Speaker 1: a rookie that you're excited to see this season. Defensive
- 29:06Speaker 1: line room.
- 29:07Speaker 3: I play not on the team.
- 29:10Speaker 2: They don't have to be on the team.
- 29:11Speaker 1: They can be on the team, somebody who played in
- 29:14Speaker 1: the NFL last year, that's a part of the defensive
- 29:17Speaker 1: line that you're excited to watch them.
- 29:20Speaker 4: First, when I comes to my mind, I would stay AJ,
- 29:22Speaker 4: and I've been. I've been, feel like guy, I've been
- 29:24Speaker 4: a huge advocate for AJ. I think last year he
- 29:28Speaker 4: took some great stride and I think, you know, watching
- 29:31Speaker 4: them at ot is how he's moving now, the game's
- 29:33Speaker 4: kind of coming to him. Like you know, you can't
- 29:36Speaker 4: speak for another man in this league, but I feel
- 29:38Speaker 4: like he's going to have a pretty.
- 29:41Speaker 3: Damn good year.
- 29:42Speaker 1: I'm so excited that he's back. I'm so excited to
- 29:44Speaker 1: watch him this season. It was amazing to see what
- 29:47Speaker 1: he did last year with the team, and it's so
- 29:49Speaker 1: great that he has teammates like you who pour into
- 29:52Speaker 1: him and really believe in his abilities on the field.
- 29:55Speaker 1: One more question for you. Give me a few words
- 29:58Speaker 1: to describe Dwayne Carter. We've got a new defensive lineman
- 30:01Speaker 1: that was drafted by Brandon Bean and company, and I'm
- 30:06Speaker 1: excited that he's here.
- 30:07Speaker 2: He comes from Duke. What is this guy like?
- 30:13Speaker 4: He's a smart He's a smart kid, first of all,
- 30:15Speaker 4: and I love his approach to the game. He's he's, uh,
- 30:19Speaker 4: he's going to put someone in that serious column. It
- 30:21Speaker 4: might be him right now, but I mean he's very,
- 30:23Speaker 4: very intentative to details. Every every day in the meeting room,
- 30:26Speaker 4: he's he's taking notes, and you know, he go out there,
- 30:30Speaker 4: he's trying to apply what he's learning.
- 30:32Speaker 3: It's not easy, you know.
- 30:33Speaker 4: I mean, you come in, you had to kind of
- 30:34Speaker 4: destruct your mind on what you learned in college and
- 30:36Speaker 4: kind of you know, get us to the terminology and
- 30:39Speaker 4: be able to then apply it. I think he's doing
- 30:41Speaker 4: a great job so far of come my air and
- 30:43Speaker 4: compete and and and buying into the process.
- 30:46Speaker 2: Take one.
- 30:47Speaker 1: I'm excited to see what this group looks like this season.
- 30:49Speaker 1: I'm excited to see you in it, a healthy season,
- 30:52Speaker 1: ready to go. We know last season was cut a
- 30:54Speaker 1: little bit short. You came back, but this defensive line
- 30:58Speaker 1: is better with you in it. So thanks for taking
