- 0:00So I think supporting organizational Innovation is
- 0:04must a necessity. Something a lot of leaders
- 0:10practitioners and organizations simply just don't get now.
- 0:16I think we all can assume or imagine or understand why it's a
- 0:19must a necessity. I think we're realizing what
- 0:23we're seeing between let's call it 2019 and 2020 3 is that so
- 0:30much can happen in a short period of time where
- 0:32organizations have to remain have to keep ability of being a
- 0:36job. Being supportive to change
- 0:40adaptive, to change resilient to change supportive of change,
- 0:46supportive of innovation. And I think having leaders
- 0:50inside the company that are stale, or, or stuck in their
- 0:56ways doesn't doesn't, doesn't mode.
- 1:00Well, and doesn't go well. Doing moments in times like
- 1:04this, and I don't think it's stopping.
- 1:08I think there are many reasons of why the last 5 to 10 years,
- 1:13has been up and down, lots of changes.
- 1:16Lots of complexities and just many reasons why, again, whether
- 1:20we're talking about the culture changes, whether we're talking
- 1:23about the racial Wars that were having whether we're talking
- 1:27about the demon, your changes and issues that we're having,
- 1:31where, I think the intelligence factors are starting to shift a
- 1:35bit weird, what you need to know and how you You need to learn to
- 1:39be able to put yourself in a position to have a great job to
- 1:41have a great career, is starting to change the political
- 1:45landscape is changing. There's a lot of things
- 1:46changing, where organizations, have to put Innovation at the
- 1:50top of their priority list. So how does HR have anything to
- 1:53do with this? Right?
- 1:54How does this all work? I think the very first step is
- 1:57to build processes that can reinforce Innovation straight
- 2:01up. Now, what does that mean?
- 2:03I think when you want to reinforce and have processes
- 2:06that reinforces The vision you have to have a true operational
- 2:11fabric. We're whether it's once a month,
- 2:13once a quarter twice a year once a year, every single employee
- 2:17from the top to the very bottom of the organization understands
- 2:21that it is a mandated expectation that they're
- 2:25constantly proactively thinking about how they can improve what
- 2:29they do, internally how they can think outside the box, how they
- 2:32can bring a new idea, a new tweak, a new pivot, a new moment
- 2:36to make with there. Doing more productive, faster,
- 2:39more efficient, and just inevitably better.
- 2:43I think having that as part of a GD, an expectation, something
- 2:47that employers would be measured against something that's
- 2:50incredibly important. I think hiring for folks that
- 2:53have Innovation and have new ideas and have curiosity at
- 2:57their core is something that needs to be met easily be put in
- 3:01place. I think, at the end of the day,
- 3:06it's incredibly important to make sure that the process has
- 3:10the Innovation, the the Little Fabrics of who you have in place
- 3:15that can support. That is incredibly important and
- 3:17removing folks that are not on board or not, excited about
- 3:21Innovation, I'm not excited about coming up with new ideas.
- 3:25So a very core processing to make it very simple and clear
- 3:28and granular is to have a simple month to month year to year by
- 3:34month. Whatever it's going to be.
- 3:36It's a moment we are everyone on the team is coming up with new
- 3:40ideas of how they can improve what they do personally.
- 3:43Lee how the department and operations move overall or in
- 3:47organizationally. Right.
- 3:50I think the second thing you want to think about is hiring
- 3:52for Innovation and building at internal capabilities, I just
- 3:56spoke about that kind of in the first tip but I'll expand a bit
- 3:58more. I think there are so many tools
- 4:01out here that can really analyze and assess, who was the most
- 4:05curious, who has the most ideas, who is excited about, bringing
- 4:11those ideas to the table. No I think one very simple way
- 4:15without investing in big tools of AI and all these other things
- 4:19that are incredibly expensive at times, one simple thing is
- 4:23during the interview process, try to judge and assess and
- 4:27analyze by the questions you ask, who is actually in a state
- 4:33of the career. In a point in time in their
- 4:35career where they're excited to present new ideas, they're
- 4:39excited to tackle New Frontiers. I think coming at that
- 4:44conversation and I'm peeling and bacon that out at a real raw
- 4:48authentic levels. Important to let me give you a
- 4:50break practical example, I know right now, my wife is looking
- 4:55for a new job. My wife naturally in her core
- 5:00and definitely based off of the time period of her life.
- 5:03With a lot of things that are happening outside, the
- 5:04workplace, I know, coming up with new systems processes,
- 5:09innovation ideas and something and it's not not not only, not
- 5:12natural to her but not an interest or desire for her.
- 5:17So if an organization is trying to hire an executive assistant,
- 5:21that's going to break the mold, adjust pivot and readjust things
- 5:25or bring Innovation to the work to make the More productive,
- 5:28more efficient, whatever the case is going to be, that may
- 5:30not be in, my wife's will house at the moment.
- 5:33Thus, they may not be, she may not be an overall fit with that
- 5:36brand. Doesn't mean that she's not a
- 5:39great employee. Doesn't mean she's not able to
- 5:42provide value to an organization.
- 5:44That just means she's not a good fit for the organization once
- 5:48which is, which is innovation, which is change.
- 5:52And I think being able to ask and unpeel and unpack, some of
- 5:55those questions during the interview process is incredibly
- 5:58important. So going to her directly through
- 6:01it with in that interview and providing examples and nuances
- 6:04of moments and we're you need this role to break and tweak and
- 6:08change things. And just looking at her body
- 6:10language analyzing the way she reacts and responds.
- 6:13And then bluntly asking is this something that you're excited
- 6:17about right now at this stage in your career?
- 6:21And whatever the answer is is great, but the fact that you're
- 6:24asking the big bold question and analyzing that and setting
- 6:27expectations from the get is incredibly important.
- 6:31For the third thing is to find a rewards and recognition I think
- 6:35if we want employees to be highly Innovative, and how the
- 6:39thoughtful, about how they can break tweak and adjust things, I
- 6:42think we need to reward them for that effort, that may look like
- 6:46rewarding them for a bonus structure promotion.
- 6:50New title allow them to tap into different projects and things
- 6:55that are a little bit more geared towards their passions
- 6:57and interest. But I think building out of
- 7:00rewards and recognition program that are fueled by how much
- 7:04which the employee is driving and bringing Innovation to the
- 7:07table and rewarding them for. That is incredibly important.
- 7:10I'll give you one way that I used to talk about often.
- 7:14I have and I will continue to reward clap for pat on the back.
- 7:20Maybe even provide a bonus, little extra cash on top of that
- 7:23weekly, or bi-weekly check for those that had the greatest
- 7:27ideas that fail. I want to reward those that are
- 7:32bold enough that are that are that are that have enough ego?
- 7:36Because that's another thing. You need a slight, I talked
- 7:39about this actually, I should have, you need a slight level of
- 7:42ego to be able to have the the confidence, the hutzpah to be
- 7:46able to bring up new ideas. And I think if you reward like
- 7:49congratulate say, they thank you.
- 7:51Andrew. Thank you, Derrick for that, new
- 7:53idea for that presentation for thinking through this, over the
- 7:57last six seven, eight days. We're not going Is this, it's
- 8:01not clear enough, it's not thoughtful enough, it's not,
- 8:04it's not enough of a great partnership with what we're
- 8:05trying to do, but I will say thank you for putting in the
- 8:10effort, there are nuances and things that we can extract that
- 8:12we can build upon to make a little bit more better, make it
- 8:14better, make a little bit better, make a little bit more
- 8:17of a fit for us. But at least we warning that
- 8:20individual for that, not pushing them down, not making them feel
- 8:24like it was a bad idea for them to bring up the guy two years.
- 8:27And I'm making them feel like since the idea is Isn't
- 8:30something we're going to put in place that it was a waste of the
- 8:32time. No.
- 8:32Congratulate them for spending that time.
- 8:34Just always something you can extract from that focusing on
- 8:39diversity and inclusion can help organizational Innovation at
- 8:42scale. This is something a lot of
- 8:45organizations is simply Miss hiring people that have a very
- 8:49different way of attacking, similar problems will drive
- 8:52Innovation Point Blank period end of discussion.
- 8:57For instance, with some of my new Endeavors with top employer.
- 9:00Right now, I'm looking at a few elements of the product and
- 9:05since I come from a completely different, background of each
- 9:07are completely different background a business.
- 9:09I'm looking at a few gaps that can potentially increase
- 9:13Revenue, adjust the product. Make it a little bit more more
- 9:17familiar for the states. I'm just looking at different
- 9:20things from a way that will really drive high levels of
- 9:24productivity potential additional Revenue.
- 9:26Because of my diverse background, I have a completely
- 9:29different way of looking at it. I think inclusion is, well, I
- 9:33think I think there are there's a certain percentage of
- 9:36employees across teams that actually have the ability to
- 9:40drive new ideas, but they don't feel safe enough to share the
- 9:43new ideas because they've seen their counterparts and their
- 9:46fellow employees. Get scrutinized for those same
- 9:49new ideas in those moments, so kind of similar to the rewards
- 9:53and recognition adjusting the the best practices in the
- 9:58operational, Fabrics of your company from a Communications
- 10:00perspective, And saying, look, I know in the past, we may have
- 10:04scrutinized to push down those represented, new ideas, good,
- 10:08bad or indifferent. But there's a new sheriff in
- 10:12town. There's a new way that we're
- 10:13trying to do things here from an HR perspective.
- 10:16We're trying to support organizational Innovation and so
- 10:20we will be a fool to not appreciate.
- 10:22Not make you feel comfortable to share those new ideas.
- 10:26There's no dumb ideas. Here there's no stupid
- 10:28statements. And we want to understand what
- 10:31that looks like. So kind of going back to acts
- 10:33number to building an internal capabilities, hold the fireside
- 10:36chat. Hold an internal like pitching
- 10:39and competition where there's reward or moment in place where
- 10:42folks can present and put decks together and really push for new
- 10:46ideas. Work with the HR work with the
- 10:50recruiting teams and hire someone that doesn't necessarily
- 10:53fit the JD perfectly but bring them in.
- 10:57Anyway, Making sure with your recruiting efforts you're not
- 11:01just going after folks with the exact five years of background
- 11:04and this particular industry with this particular amount of
- 11:07success. Look for some transferable
- 11:10skills. Be open-minded.
- 11:13May indeed that of your recruiters, make sure that
- 11:15you're judging and analyzing that.
- 11:17So we have Recruiters in your team, make sure.
- 11:20Hey, look, I need to quantify me be able to quantify that 35% of
- 11:24those that are in this pipeline coming from completely different
- 11:27background. And I'm not just talking Talking
- 11:28about gender or race. I'm talking about skills, I'm
- 11:31talking about competencies. I'm talking about rolls, I'm
- 11:34talking about experiences. Finally, promote collaboration.
- 11:41Any time there's a new team inside of an organization that
- 11:44comes up with a new idea that actually works or there are
- 11:48nuances of what you that new idea was and is that you
- 11:51extracted and put in place promoting promoted through your
- 11:55internal communication channels promoted.
- 11:58Via your website promoted via your slack Channel conversations
- 12:02your Microsoft team conversations, your emails,
- 12:05promoted congratulated, put energy behind it, If you want to
- 12:11start, I've often talked about how organizations just started
- 12:14internal podcast for their their employees to tune in and listen
- 12:17to promote it there as well. Make sure everyone knows how
- 12:22much you are grateful as an organization and how much you're
- 12:26supporting the fact that people are thinking outside the box and
- 12:29trying to push the envelope from an innovation perspective.
- 12:32So these are just a few thoughts that I have personally as it
- 12:36pertains to how HR can support organizational innovation.
- 12:40As always just a few thoughts, just a few perspectives.
- 12:45We'll talk soon. As always just a few thoughts,
- 12:43just a few perspectives. We'll talk soon.
