- 0:07The New York Yankees faced the Richmond Virginians on April 12, 1964 for an exhibition game before the season.
- 0:13The Yankees entered 1964 under manager Yogi Berra.
- 0:17Yogi had just retired as a player and the Yankees needed a new leader to replace Ralph Hauck,
- 0:21who moved to the front office as general manager after losing the World Series in 1963.
- 0:26Richmond was the Yankees' AAA club and they were managed by Preston Gomez.
- 0:30This would be the Virginians' final season in Richmond.
- 0:33After 1964, they transferred to Toledo, Ohio and they were renamed the Toledo Mudhens.
- 0:39This audio recording is from the New York Radio broadcast featuring announcers Mel Allen and Phil Rizzuto.
- 0:45At home plate, Yogi Berra meeting with Preston Gomez, the Virginians' manager.
- 1:01The banding order for the Yankees will be Phil Linds leading off, shortstop, Bobby Richardson, second base,
- 1:10Roger Maris in right field, Mickey Mantle in center field, Tom Thresh in left field, Joe Cuppetone at first base,
- 1:19Elston Howard catching through for your third base, and Al Downing, who you pitched for,
- 1:24which hung at one time, on the mound for the Yankees.
- 1:29The Richmond team, which had been training in Hollywood just below Fort Lauderdale,
- 1:36their season doesn't open for a pitch yet and they didn't send an entire squad.
- 1:40They've got about 13 or 14 men.
- 1:47Don Wallace will be leading off at shortstop, Alice Clark, second base, Art Lopez in left field,
- 1:54Bob Smith will do the catching batting fourth. You remember him when he played for the Giants and the Senators.
- 2:00Fred Hotkitt, first base, Rich Barry in right field, Mike Matheson, who worked out for the Yankees in spring training last year at third base,
- 2:12Vic Pagel, center field, and Billy Muppet, who the Yankees had faced before when he was an Red Sox uniformer during the pitching.
- 2:21And as I recall, their times had some trouble, Mr. Muppet.
- 2:29Well, this is the last game on spring training. An open date tomorrow and Tuesday.
- 2:38Welcome Yogi Day. And what a hand he got when he was introduced here.
- 2:45They introduced the players from both teams.
- 2:50I don't know how many decibels came up on Joe Cooper's machine over there, but he got a tremendous hand.
- 3:02We have just two umpires today.
- 3:09Val Gommon is back in the play. I'm looking for Frank Humon.
- 3:15Oh, I see him. He was out there talking to the crowd at the right field fence, and he's held his hand up.
- 3:21So wait a minute. The game's about to begin. Here's the first pitch, and no umpire first base.
- 3:26It's in there for a strike to Phil Linds.
- 3:28Humon, meantime, is talking to a policeman. That's why I couldn't find him.
- 3:32Out in front of the... Here's the next pitch. Hits five short in the left center for a base hit.
- 3:40It wouldn't have made any difference whether Linds touched the bat or not if he got back.
- 3:46Frank Humon's coming in now. He was talking to a policeman along the right field foul line.
- 3:52They have an overflow crowd asking him to keep them back and not to run onto the field of play.
- 3:59Phil Linds singles the left center. Now here is Bobby Richardson. Takes it low and outside.
- 4:06Oscar Kuhn is umpiring his third base.
- 4:15Go over to first. The runner's back. It's a beautiful day in Richmond.
- 4:20Wish we'd had a day like this in the last three days of our stay in Fort Lauderdale.
- 4:26Here's the pitch inside for a ball.
- 4:30It's a little more on the chillier side, but the sun is shining bright.
- 4:38Muffin, the right-hander, delivers. Richardson takes it up high. Ball three.
- 4:45I'm glad we didn't have a microphone at home play, as some folks would like to have.
- 4:55I heard what Muffin said, but I'm going to tell you. Here's the pitch. It's inside for ball four and Richardson walks.
- 5:05Linds moves to second. Muffin actually wasn't yelling enough. He was angry himself.
- 5:11Now coming up is Roger Maris.
- 5:24Linds on second. Richardson on first.
- 5:28Muffin, the right-hander, delivers and it's in there for a strike.
- 5:34Muffin looks as if he's put on a lot of weight.
- 5:43Bill Linds leaning away from second. Bobby Richardson from first.
- 5:48And the pitch. Maris swings and lines under clean first and second, the right field for a base hit. Rounding third is Linds.
- 5:54He's coming in to store. The ball is cut off as the throw went toward third to hold Richardson.
- 6:01The ball is cut off by shortstop Don Wallace.
- 6:05And Bobby stops to put him back. Now Mickey Manil.
- 6:12One to nothing, New York.
- 6:22They have a tremendous parking lot beyond the fences.
- 6:27Here's the pitch, high outside for a ball.
- 6:33You know, sitting up in a place like this and looking out into a parking lot just jammed with more than a thousand cars, here's the pitch, swung on and foul tipped.
- 6:49You get an idea that General colors people like most and they're more on the pastel side.
- 7:02Muffin all set, delivers up high to Mickey.
- 7:22Richardson moves off second, Marisol first. The delivery is swung on and foul back.
- 7:32You know that ball as it came down hit a screen, I don't know if it was that close.
- 7:38I'd have reached for Zuto out to get it.
- 7:43Two balls, two strikes.
- 7:48They're away from first and second. Here's the pitch, it's up high.
- 7:54A 3-2 count.
- 7:57They expected somewhere in the neighborhood of 10,000 people here today.
- 8:03They certainly have that many with an old crow crowd extending from the right field foul line out to the point and deep right center.
- 8:13Three balls, two strikes, two men on. Billy Muffin tries to pick off play but didn't throw the ball as he whirled around off the mound.
- 8:23His strikes caught.
- 8:26Don Wallace tried to slip in behind Richardson.
- 8:30Richardson leads off second, Marisol first the pitch, the man will strike out.
- 8:38Now tipped held onto by Bob Smith.
- 8:44Nick was going for the long one, you could tell that.
- 8:49Now the batter is Tom Trash.
- 8:54Joe Puppet going on back.
- 9:02He's up in New York. Richardson leads off second, Marisol first. The pitch is swung on by one hopper to Clark over to Wallace.
- 9:10That's a first.
- 9:13Nickly executed double play. Clark is second, Wallace is short, the hoppies first.
- 9:19And the side is retired.
- 9:22One run, two hits.
- 9:24There were no errors, one left on.
- 9:26At the end of the first half, the first inning, Yankees won, the Virginians coming to bat.
- 9:39The last half of the first inning.
- 9:43The Richmond Virginians come to bat.
- 9:49They're not a set team as yet, you must keep in mind they brought up enough players from the Yankee farm area in Hollywood.
- 10:03From there they selected them and sent them out to different teams.
- 10:08It filled those boards executed a double play with Finesse.
- 10:11Oh, he couldn't do any better than the big ladies now.
- 10:15Leading off is Don Wallace, left-hand hitter.
- 10:21Clark on deck and Art Lopez follow.
- 10:26Left-hander Al Downing's pitch. It's low, ball one.
- 10:35Al did some pitching for the Virginians.
- 10:40Here's the pitch, swung on and missed.
- 10:43One-one count.
- 10:53And the next pitch, swung on, little tap toward the mound.
- 10:57Second by Downing to throw to first.
- 10:59In time he almost threw it away.
- 11:02You know, Joe Puppetone almost daily impresses you with his feelings.
- 11:10So good over there, he's a little bit like Vic Powell with that glove.
- 11:17Didn't play to get too good because in the end field I don't care where he threw it.
- 11:23Harris Clark comes up, right-hand batter.
- 11:26And the pitch, in there for a strike.
- 11:31He's from the Virgin Islands, his middle name is Mann, Harris Mann, remember that?
- 11:36Harris Mann Clark, here's the pitch.
- 11:40He went for a ball that tailed away from him.
- 11:44Two strikes.
- 11:53Now the delivery, outside for a ball.
- 12:06A two-one count.
- 12:10Al Downing's pitch is swung on.
- 12:12There's a high fly ball in the medium center.
- 12:14Mann drips in and makes the catch.
- 12:18Two away.
- 12:22Lopez, left-hand batter coming up.
- 12:30And Blaney wears glasses.
- 12:38Al Downing's delivery is low and inside for a ball.
- 12:42There was a time when players refused to wear them.
- 12:47They thought it was a stigma.
- 12:51Here's the pitch, it's in there for a strike.
- 12:56Actually, there are a couple of umpires that use them off the field.
- 13:07Downing's overhand fastball is cut on and bowed to the left of the plate.
- 13:19Naturally, they get kidded when they're spotted walking the street.
- 13:23There's a ball player that says, you know you ought to use those in the game.
- 13:30Downing's delivery, swung on, ground ball head out to second.
- 13:33Richards is in up with it, throws on the peppertone.
- 13:37And that's it in the last half, the first inning.
- 13:41No runs, no hits, no errors, no one left on.
- 13:44And at the end of the first inning, the Yankees won, Richmond nothing.
- 13:50And every fan attending the opener will receive a welcome yogi button too, Mel.
- 13:54And a big free game program will get underway at 1.30 with game time at 2 p.m.
- 14:00So it should be a big day.
- 14:02Everybody come out and greet yogurt.
- 14:06The Yankees get their American League championship emblems, right?
- 14:10Elston Howard's and Los Angeles Player Award.
- 14:13It'll be an historic opening day.
- 14:17I know you people like to be in on it.
- 14:22Joe Peppertone takes low, ball one.
- 14:27Jim Gleason coaching at third and Spud Murray at first.
- 14:32Peppertone takes outside.
- 14:39Billy Muffet pitching for the Virginians.
- 14:42The pitch is swung on as a high drive to deep left center.
- 14:46Vic Pagel goes way back and makes the catch well over 400 feet away.
- 14:543.55 the left center, that had to be close to 400 feet.
- 15:00It's a big ballpark.
- 15:09Elston Howard up, he hits the first pitch, a drive deep to left field, going, going, gone.
- 15:22He's a strong man.
- 15:26That seemed very near smashing the windshield of the station wagon.
- 15:31But a young man standing out there, there's several, with gloves.
- 15:35He saved somebody's windshield and got the ball.
- 15:41Two to nothing, New York, and here's Cleet Boyer.
- 15:47Wow, that Howard can really put the wood to them.
- 15:52Inside the first pitch to Boyer, there are many who claim he's perhaps the strongest fellow in the league.
- 15:59The pitch is in there for a strike.
- 16:03One ball, one strike.
- 16:06Muffet's delivery, inside, ball two.
- 16:10Strength, of course, is helpful, but it's not necessary to be a home run hitter.
- 16:14Look at Ernie Banks, wrist action, timing.
- 16:18If you've got them both, so much the better.
- 16:28Now the pitch, swung on foul-tip.
- 16:32A two-two count.
- 16:44Here's the pitch, swung on, there's a drive down the right field line.
- 16:48Rich Barry goes over and takes it right at the line.
- 16:53Two down and Al Downing is coming up.
- 17:00Al's familiar with these three cents.
- 17:05He hits the no-hitter for the Virginia.
- 17:10That's right-handed, takes a strike.
- 17:14Two to nothing, New York, it's the first half of the second inning.
- 17:19And the next pitch inside, Alfonso Erwin Downing from Trenton, New Jersey.
- 17:29And the next pitch, cut on foul-back.
- 17:38He pitched a no-hit game to Richmond where on May 12, 1960.
- 17:48Here's the delivery, it's in there, false strike.
- 17:53Sides retired, one run, one hit, no errors and no one left on.
- 18:01And thus at the end of an inning and a half, the score, the Yankees 2, Richmond nothing.
- 18:11In the last half of the second inning, the veteran Bob Schmidt, right-hand batter, takes it outside for a ball.
- 18:21And Preston Gomez coaching at third base.
- 18:27He's the manager.
- 18:29Next pitch over the outside corner for a false strike.
- 18:34Ike Futch is coaching at first base.
- 18:41Now the delivery.
- 18:43It's over that outside corner, just in the strike zone up high.
- 18:50One and two.
- 18:56And the pitch, swung on.
- 18:58There's a drive to D plus D.O.
- 19:00That ball is going to be topside, Tresh up against the pitch.
- 19:05Right where it says courtesy.
- 19:10No courtesy on the part of Tresh there.
- 19:13He hit a ball as hard as Howard did, but he didn't get a hundred an hour.
- 19:18And Bob Schmidt is retired.
- 19:22Tresh banged into the barrier.
- 19:27It held on.
- 19:30Fred Hopke, left-hand batter, takes it low for a ball.
- 19:37He's the first baseman for the Virginians.
- 19:40Some of these names will become more familiar to you in short years ahead.
- 19:46The pitch, cut on foul back.
- 20:06Al Downing goes to work.
- 20:08The pitch is low.
- 20:21And the delivery, swung on and grounded foul.
- 20:24Ike Sputch coaching it first, dabbed it.
- 20:40You know, Pedro Gomez, the manager, was born in Oriente, Cuba.
- 20:48Two balls, two strikes.
- 20:51The pitch is low outside.
- 20:55Went to college in Mexico City.
- 20:59And in his baseball career, he was signed first of all by the Washington Senators.
- 21:06The pitch is swung on and top foul.
- 21:10Howard going over near the screen and he's got it.
- 21:13Yes, missed the screen by inches.
- 21:20Two down.
- 21:26Pedro Gomez played with the Hanna.
- 21:30Then another World Series here.
- 21:37Right now, Rich Barry swings and fouls it off.
- 21:43He was hired by the Los Angeles Club to direct their Spokane club in the Pacific Coast League.
- 21:52Stayed there until he joined the Virginians last winter.
- 21:56Here's the pitch, swung on and missed.
- 21:59Tried to uppercut that one.
- 22:07Downing New York.
- 22:13Downing is delivery high outside.
- 22:28Downing into the windup and the pitch change up is high.
- 22:44Interesting to see some of these better players in your top farm club or on your top farm club.
- 22:51Because one day they'll be up at Yankee Stadium.
- 22:54Here's the delivery. He tried to check his swing but couldn't and strikes out.
- 23:00Thus the side is retired. No runs, no hits, no errors, no one left on.
- 23:04And at the end of two innings of play, the Yankees 2, Richmond nothing.
- 23:12In the first half of the third inning, Phil Lenz hits a line drive to short caught by Don Wallace.
- 23:26Lenz had single in the first inning.
- 23:33Richardson who drew a pass steps up. High outside, ball one.
- 23:45Now the pitch, it's in there.
- 23:49A 1-1 count.
- 23:54The next delivery, high and inside.
- 23:58Did he intend on an upper ball or a change in?
- 24:01I know he's pissed off and it's hard to tell he's pitching so fast.
- 24:04He is pitching fast.
- 24:06Here's the pitch. Swung on as the line drive to straightaway center, Big Bagels comes in and makes the catch.
- 24:17Due down and up comes Roger Maris.
- 24:20Right field hit, Roger Maris.
- 24:29Roger singled in the first inning. Takes it inside, belt high, ball one.
- 24:39And the pitch, outside, ball two.
- 24:51Billy Muffet comes in with the pitch. It's swung on and popped up.
- 24:56Out back of second and the second baseman shots the shortstop off.
- 25:00It's high spark and he makes the catch.
- 25:03The side is retired. No runs, no hits, no errors, no one left on.
- 25:07And at the end of two and a half innings, Yankees two, Richmond nothing.
- 25:23And the last half of the third inning, Mike Matheson, left hand batter, takes it inside.
- 25:32Mike, of course, is the name, that is Matheson's name is one that you all know real well.
- 25:39He was with the Yankees spring training last year.
- 25:43Fastball on inside. For a while it looked as if he might make the team. He put on a pretty good display.
- 25:54Two balls, no strikes.
- 26:01Downing's next pitch swung on as a high fly ball to short left.
- 26:06Going out to shortstop lens and he makes the catch way over near the foul line.
- 26:18Up comes Vic Pagel.
- 26:22Center fielder, right hand batter.
- 26:31Al Downing's delivery swung on foul tipped strike one.
- 26:45Downing working rapidly too, high outside with a fastball and the count's one and one.
- 26:54Remember the Yanks and the Red Sox opened the season Tuesday at Yankee Stadium.
- 27:01The pitch is swung on in this. There's an open day and then the Red Sox are there on Thursday.
- 27:20Now the pitch, swung on as a high ball to short, clubbed nicely by a lens going to his left to throw the cup its own in time.
- 27:28And they're two away.
- 27:33The man who makes out the schedules for the big leagues has a thankless task.
- 27:40This year the Yankees have come up with a fine schedule, especially for weekend dates when more people can go.
- 27:52Here's Billy Muppet, high ball one.
- 27:56And don't forget those six suburban nights which will start at six o'clock.
- 28:01Center of the rig at eight o'clock night games. Of course there are a lot of night games at eight in addition.
- 28:07And the big game is inside.
- 28:14That Fourth of July doubleheader of the twins on a Saturday is going to be pretty good.
- 28:19That'll be quite a weekend.
- 28:22Al Downing's next pitch is swung on and missed.
- 28:27Muppet was swinging for.
- 28:32There's so many cars out there. Just pick out one you like.
- 28:38The two on delivery, up high.
- 28:56Downing's next pitch swung on and missed.
- 29:12Al fires away and the ball is popped high into a very short right.
- 29:17Marist coming on and makes the catch. Just to the side are Bobby Richardson who could have made it if he had to.
- 29:27No runs, no hits, no errors, no one left on.
- 29:30And at the end of three innings of play the Yankees own the game's only two runs, three hits and no errors.
- 29:38Zero all the way around for the Virginians.
- 29:45The Yankees have played in just about 30 minutes.
- 29:49And as we go to the fourth Mickey Manil steps up and right behind the microphone Phil Rizzuto.
- 29:55Thank you, man. I think he takes called strike one on the first pitch.
- 29:58Mickey was called out on the second pitch. No, he was swung and missed in the first inning.
- 30:03Changeup, bonded in the air over the pitch. He's there coming in fast and second base and he's got it.
- 30:08Dred went by the pitcher but popped it up in the air and Marist caught him charging in for it on the fly.
- 30:17No way. And here's Joe, no it's not, it's Tom Tret. Tret didn't know double play in the first inning.
- 30:26You're tuned to your Yankee baseball station here in Albany, New York, WOKO 1460 on your dial.
- 30:34Nothing to take, no wind up at all.
- 30:41The pitch is inside corner, strike two called.
- 30:51Nothing in two on Tret. Next pitch is fouled back out of play.
- 31:06Billy Muffet, working a little too fast. Tret has the time of the play.
- 31:15The pitch is a curve hit on the ground. Nice play knocked down by the second base and throw to Tret.
- 31:21Inside, a nice play by Hockey. They've got Tret on a highly ground ball.
- 31:25That hard shot knocked down on the edge of the outfield grass.
- 31:28And his throw, even though it was wide, Hockey kept his foot on the bag.
- 31:32Two outs, Joe Peppertow who fly deep to left center field in the second inning on deck Elton Howe.
- 31:47First pitch to Joe, a ground ball to first base. Hockey has it, steps on the bag and there were three quick outs from Muffet.
- 31:54No runs, no hits, no risks and errors, no brief ups at the end of three and a half.
- 31:58It's the Yankees two, the Virginians nothing.
- 32:02In here he has faced nine men in three innings.
- 32:05And the legal fatter, Don Wallace, will be leading off against Downey in the bottom of the fourth inning.
- 32:12He'll be followed by Horace Clark and Art Lurke.
- 32:16Wallace hit back to the box, his first time in fact.
- 32:24Downey's going straight in from center field.
- 32:30Beautiful day though here in Richmond, Virginia.
- 32:34Downey's pitch is a bonnet camp filed off strike one.
- 32:42It's now showing you an overflow crowd here at Parker Field.
- 32:48And standing all over.
- 32:52Downey's first hit on the ground, leads to his left.
- 32:55Up with it, one hand and face to face.
- 32:57In time for the out and out, beautiful play by Phil Linds and Adelaide.
- 33:01Really close to third base. That Wallace can get down the line.
- 33:05Phil Linds who made three sparkling plays yesterday when the Yankees lost the grave has made two here already.
- 33:12One hand changes, going to his left, making perfect throws.
- 33:19Horace Clark five to center field, first down at bat.
- 33:27Linds has got a real fine spring in between injuries.
- 33:31He is another fellow that comes up with an awful lot of injuries.
- 33:37Downey's pitch, hitting the ground at second base.
- 33:39One hop, Bobby Richardson up with it.
- 33:40So it's the first two outs.
- 33:46And now Bob Lopez who will bounce the second base in the first inning.
- 33:49Lopez back from left-handed.
- 34:01Lopez stands deep in the box with a close center.
- 34:05Pitch high and tight ball one.
- 34:17Downey's pitch is in the first.
- 34:19Ball two, two and up.
- 34:31Downey gets the sign from Horace.
- 34:35His pitch is fouled at the lowest.
- 34:37Oh man, and that almost came through the window and got melt.
- 34:42It hit to the screen right below it and then it pounds off fast.
- 34:46And some of Joe Cooper's wire is hanging out there.
- 34:49I wasn't worried. I was in position. I was ready.
- 34:52All right.
- 34:56The two-one pitch is outside ball three.
- 35:00The ball was under the table.
- 35:07A three-one count.
- 35:12Downey's pitch is fouled off the screen.
- 35:21Joe Cooper's all the way out on the field.
- 35:24Full count on odd Lopez.
- 35:34Downey ready now for the payoff pitch.
- 35:37Two outs, nobody on. Yankees leading two-nothing.
- 35:40There's the windup.
- 35:42Pitch, a foul-tip at the plate.
- 35:45Downey's running through the breaking ball that time on a three-two count.
- 35:58Again the three-two delivery.
- 36:00High and tight ball four and that's the first pace runner for the Richmond team in the ball game.
- 36:06A face on ball to odd Lopez.
- 36:09Downey had retired the first 11 men that he faced.
- 36:14Tom Schmitz who hit a line drive against the fence in Redfield.
- 36:19And Tom Schmitz made a spectacular play as he courted and banged into the wall.
- 36:29Two men out.
- 36:31Downey's on holding first against Lopez. The pitch is inside, ball one.
- 36:45There deep in the left field and center field to Schmitz.
- 36:48Big right hand hitter with good politics. Swing and a missed strike one, one-on-one.
- 37:00Looks like it's going out to left field.
- 37:05Downing stretches.
- 37:07Curve is in there, strike two, one ball, two strikes.
- 37:19Lopez leads away at first.
- 37:25Over against the time, delivered a foul ball head over towards the Yankee dugout.
- 37:33Still one ball, two strikes on Bob Schmitz.
- 37:49Now Downey ready.
- 37:52Down ball right at left one hop. He throws to Richardson for the fourth time.
- 37:56Boy that ball drove left and back a step or two.
- 38:01Four Richmond in the bottom of the fourth. No runs, no hits, no Yankees errors.
- 38:05One man left and at the end of the fourth full inning it's the Yankees two, Richmond nothing.
- 38:12Well Mel, what have we got to talk about here about this upcoming season?
- 38:18You only talk about the whole 160-50.
- 38:22Oh no, no.
- 38:25Well I'll talk about a great portion of them. The popular Yankee combination plan is still available.
- 38:31As I said earlier, the Yankee schedule this year is one more to the liking of fans.
- 38:37And the combination plan as a variety of surprise extras includes 44 big games on 36 select days,
- 38:45including 13 Sundays, 21 night games, the July 4th holiday doubleheader,
- 38:51and the Gala Welcome Yogi opening day program there for tomorrow.
- 38:57Combination plan ticket holders have the same choice seat locations for each game, and there are other privileges too.
- 39:04To get your combination plan tickets or for more information about it, why don't you call
- 39:10Cypress 3-4300, ticket manager, New York Yankee Yankee Stadium.
- 39:16Of course you can ride him, but time is running short.
- 39:19And if you want a season schedule, they're available free, two times.
- 39:25Now we're ready for the fifth inning here still.
- 39:29Okay Mel, and we have another Mel out there on the mound. Mel Stoudelmeyer has replaced Billy Muppet,
- 39:34and Jake Gibbs has gone in to do the kick-tacking in place of Bobby Schmidt.
- 39:39Elston Howard, first pick of the ball, second one is low, ball two.
- 39:43Ellie Holm is deep over the left field fence in the second inning.
- 39:48Yankees leading two to nothing.
- 39:53Conductly Boyer.
- 39:56Next pick to Howard is low, ball three.
- 40:13A three-nothing pitch is inside, ball four. So Howard walks on four straight pitches.
- 40:20And it brings up Cleve Boyer. Cleve's line to right field in the second inning.
- 40:27When Boyer played down here for Richmond, Eddie Lopak was the manager. He played shortstop,
- 40:32which he has done on occasion for the Yankees and done a real fine job.
- 40:40Hopkey holding first against Howard. Here's a stretch by Stoudelmeyer.
- 40:45Pitch swing and a miss, strike one.
- 40:53On deck is Al Downing.
- 41:00Ralph Terry is loosening up in the Yankee bullpen. There's a curve in there, strike two.
- 41:16Stoudelmeyer leans over to get the sign. Howard with a short lead at first base.
- 41:24Stretch and a pitch in the dirt. Howard starts the second in the hole. Nice play by Gidd.
- 41:30He blocked that ball so it bounced in front of him.
- 41:34Gidd, as you know, is a big bonus boy at the Yankee sign.
- 41:40Not originally a factor, but he'll be better figures.
- 41:44Some day they're going to need cash more than anything else, so he's breaking Gidd's in.
- 41:50Two strikes pitch low, and boy it's extra swing, two and two.
- 42:07Nobody out here in the top of the fifth.
- 42:10The stretch in goes Howard. The ball is lined to center field right at pitch Pago.
- 42:14Howard was down to second after Huffleback. Boy, he got good work on that ball.
- 42:24One on that brings up Al Downing. Downing struck out in the second inning.
- 42:34They tried that play in the last game the Yankees played. I think it was the last game.
- 42:40Howard was thrown out at second. The boy are up, only boy has hit the pitch.
- 42:45There's a throw to first and they almost got Howard.
- 42:48All right, now just remind me on that particular play with Boyle at that,
- 43:15there was a one-one count and the catcher called for a pick out.
- 43:18Howard didn't go on the next play. The catcher called again for a pick out, which made it a 3-1 count.
- 43:23But they got him. There's a beautiful bump that might go for a face hit.
- 43:26Saddlemire throws to first. They got him. A beautiful play by Horace Clark.
- 43:32Downing bonnet that ball by the uncharging Mel Saddlemire, who had a reverse of field and go back past the pitchers mound to pick it up.
- 43:40He threw low to Horace Clark, who caught the ball lying flat on the ground.
- 43:45Saddlemire's work from the ball play by Horace Clark.
- 43:50Downing bonnet that ball by the uncharging Mel Saddlemire, who had a reverse of field and go back past the pitchers mound to pick it up.
- 43:58He threw low to Horace Clark, who caught the ball lying flat on the ground.
- 44:03Saddlemire's work from one to four.
- 44:08Howard moves to second and here's Stillinges who single-elaps center and line to the shortstop.
- 44:17Hits Stillinges in their strike one call.
- 44:24On deck, Bobby Lichten.
- 44:27And he's still leading to the nothing here. That's top of the fifth inning.
- 44:35Right-handed stretches. Pitch low. Get away from Smith but not too far.
- 44:40Grab it, J. Gibbs.
- 44:45Gibbs runs out to the pitcher's box. Have a little chat with Saddlemire.
- 44:54J. Gibbs might have been crossed up on that pitch.
- 44:57And now Saddlemire wants to talk with Gibbs a little bit.
- 45:01It's a one-one count on Stillinges.
- 45:13Elston Howard leading off second base.
- 45:21The stretch.
- 45:22The pitch. The ground ball. Hopkey, the first baseman, upwarded races to the bag for the unassisted put-up.
- 45:29For the Yankees in the top of the fifth, no runs, no hits, no Richmond errors.
- 45:33One man left and at the end of four and a half it's the Yankees two, Richmond nothing.
- 45:40Al Downey continues on the mound and he'll be facing Fred Hopkey, Rick Barry, and Mike Maffeeson.
- 45:47Yankees leading two-nothing.
- 45:52Hopkey fouled out to the catcher in the second inning.
- 46:00Bill Stafford and Hal Runniff running over to the big old clubhouse.
- 46:08They're out to do a little running in the outfield.
- 46:17Looks like they're through for the day.
- 46:21Right there hit a Fred Hopkey up there. Downey's pitch is fouled again and back of the plate.
- 46:25This one coming back near the screen and out of play.
- 46:41Hopkey's a jersey boy.
- 46:50Downey's pitch is signed.
- 46:54Swing and a miss.
- 47:07Nobody out, nobody on.
- 47:09Downey's pitch is high, one ball two strikes.
- 47:22Downey ready. His pitch is a little bit high, two and two.
- 47:28Hal Drummond dusting off home plate.
- 47:35Downey leans over to the sign. His pitch is a check swing just a little bit outside, full count, three and two.
- 47:53Downey ready for the playoff pitch.
- 47:55It's swung at it, missed, strike three.
- 47:58Two and a breaking pitch. Second strikeout for Al Downey in the ball game.
- 48:07And it brings up Rich Barry who struck out in the second inning.
- 48:22Downey's pitch is high, ball one.
- 48:37Downey's one-nothing pitch is on the outside corner strike called one-on-one.
- 48:43Mel told you this is a pretty ball park with tremendous parking area and quite accessible to the highways leading in and out of town.
- 48:53Sting up is high.
- 48:56Two balls, one strike.
- 49:06Downey's pitch hit foul outside of third, two and two.
- 49:14Steve Hamilton is up with Ralph Terry now in the Yankees ball game.
- 49:20Yankees will work out tomorrow to get ready for their opening day on Tuesday, April 14th with the Red Sox.
- 49:28Two-two pitch in the dish, three and two.
- 49:43Now the playoff pitch to Barry. A tie ball four.
- 49:49That's the second ball given up by Downey.
- 49:55It brings up Mike McEachin who pops the shortstop in the third inning.
- 50:07One away, the Yankees lead two-nothing bottom of the 7th.
- 50:12Sir gets away from Howard and bounces his game.
- 50:19It's kind of questionable whether they'll give a wild pitch or a fast ball. The ball hit the end of Howard's packing glove. Didn't look that far outside.
- 50:34It's a wild pitch. Shots to Al Downey.
- 50:40That's the second on the play, Rick Barry. It's a stretch. Pitch is the ground ball. Beautiful play by Rick. It throws the first inside for the out.
- 50:50He's just a big bit away from Mike McEachin.
- 50:54And moving ahead on the play, Rick Barry.
- 50:59Somehow Bobby reached a little longer than his arms looked like he could reach.
- 51:04That's the first infield here. That ball almost got by him.
- 51:10There's a big takeover to the shortstop in the third inning.
- 51:23Two men are out.
- 51:27Rick Barry has third base.
- 51:31Pagle right hand batter. Downing pitch is on the inside corner, strike four.
- 51:39Third base so far against Al Downey.
- 51:45One strike pitch is low. One-one.
- 51:54Downing brightly here in Richmond, Virginia. Understand it's a nice day back home in New York.
- 52:02One-one pitch is high. Ball two, two-one.
- 52:22Downing is two-one pitch. Popped in the air to left field.
- 52:26Down stretch is moving in under it.
- 52:29And Tom Haffett for Richmond in the bottom of the fifth. No runs, no hits, no Yankees.
- 52:34There's one man left. And at the end of five, it's the Yankees two to the Virginians nothing.
- 52:44All right, we're ready to go. And ready to go again is Mel Allen.
- 52:47Thank you very much, Phil. Bobby Richardson hits the first pitch high and deep into left center.
- 52:52Art Lopez goes over and makes the catch just short of the running track.
- 52:59Run away.
- 53:01Richardson had walked in line to center previously.
- 53:07And the late Billy Muffet who won the first four innings.
- 53:11Tall Yankee right-hander now facing Rockamar.
- 53:14And he can pop the second. The pitch is outside, ball one.
- 53:28Now the delivery is swung on. There's a high drive to deep center going back.
- 53:32Playing it perfectly, making the catch at the thick table.
- 53:36And now Mickey Mantle is struck out and on an attempted drag front, popped it in the air to second baseman.
- 53:43Despite the fact that the Virginians have not had a man reach base other than on a walk,
- 53:50Al Downing is through for the day, taking some wind sprints.
- 53:56They pitch to Mantle, high and away, ball one.
- 54:03Terri and Hamilton have been warming up for New York.
- 54:06They pitch to Mantle in the air force flight.
- 54:12The thing about an exhibition game such as this, people come out to see a guy like Mickey.
- 54:18They feel he ought to hit a home run.
- 54:20Pitch is low on inside.
- 54:24And in fact during the season.
- 54:26That's one of the prices you have to pay when you do hit a lot of elements.
- 54:30They expect you to do it every day you happen to come out.
- 54:33Now the pitch outside, ball three.
- 54:37And the rest is sure that the players can turn in which he could do.
- 54:48Three balls, one strike to pitch.
- 54:50That's low on inside, ball four.
- 54:54Mantle draws a walk.
- 54:57And we're going to have a runner, Archie Moore, for Mantle.
- 55:06Get your hands.
- 55:11As a matter of actual fact, in a game like this, a man such as Mickey or America or New York, they would like to be with you.
- 55:23Trash, grounded in the second into a double play, and grounded the second time, no pitch.
- 55:32Yankees leading two to nothing, it's the first half of the sixth inning.
- 55:41Two outs, Moore running for Mantle on first.
- 55:45The pitch is outside.
- 55:48Watching Jake Gibbs, he is learning some things about catching.
- 55:54It's a difficult position to learn.
- 56:00Now the pitch outside.
- 56:05I was just thinking of that little movement he made on the previous pitch.
- 56:09When he caught the ball, he shifted right out to the left, ready to fire down the second if the runner is doing.
- 56:15The catcher is blocked and you've got a left-hand hitter out there.
- 56:19Here's the delivery outside.
- 56:22Sometimes some catchers will lean back just a little, move back just enough to where they can get a look at that runner on first.
- 56:37Now Stottlemeyer behind on Tom Trash and the pitch.
- 56:43It's low outside for ball four.
- 56:47So with two down, a pair passes.
- 56:52He sets it up now for Joe Pepitone, who's flying the center, the very deep center, and grounded the first.
- 57:03Joe's still having a little trouble with his wrist on the left hand, and he is a wrist hitter.
- 57:16Two way, two on.
- 57:19Stottlemeyer's pitch is inside, ball one.
- 57:38Stottlemeyer again to the stretch and the pitch.
- 57:41He's gone and grounded down to first. Right along the line, and Hopke, who was guarding the line,
- 57:47feel it easily and Pepitone is retired.
- 57:51No runs for the Yankees, no hits, there were no errors and two men left on.
- 57:56And thus at the end of five and a half and to play, the score remains New York 2, Richmond nothing.
- 58:0414Z radio WOKO in Albany, New York.
- 58:30Last half to six pinning, two to nothing in favor of the Yankees.
- 58:44Stottlemeyer will be the first batter, and Ralph Terry has come in to do the pitching.
- 58:52We have other changes to give to you in just a moment.
- 59:01Here's a first pitch from Ralph, been there for a strike.
- 59:05Archie Moore has gone to right field, place of Maris, Trash has replaced Mantle and Center moving over from left field,
- 59:11and Hector Lopez has gone to left field.
- 59:15The third catching place of Howard, pitches low outside for a ball.
- 59:24Two to nothing, New York leading, it's the last of the six.
- 59:31Terry's next pitch is fouled off, the first out of play.
- 59:53Now the pitch on the way, high, a 2-2 count.
- 1:00:12Two balls, two strikes.
- 1:00:18Here's the pitch, high and inside, ball three.
- 1:00:24Terry wants a new ball, which gives me a chance to say that the attendance today is 12,240,
- 1:00:35and 12,000 approximately is capacity for this part.
- 1:00:47The next pitch misses the mark, ball four, and Stradlmeyer guards the wall.
- 1:00:53I've just double-checked in 10,000, the capacity in round figures.
- 1:01:05Those of you who don't like round figures, I'll give you the exact one, 9,583.
- 1:01:14We've got 12,240 today.
- 1:01:19Don Wallace, the leadoff man, the left-hand batter, takes the strike.
- 1:01:35The next pitch, the left-hand batter, is hit right by Boyer and through the hole in the left field for a face-off.
- 1:01:41Boyer was at the back, and Wallace took advantage of the positioning of the infield there and drove it by Boyer and through the gap,
- 1:01:53and that's the first hit for the Richmond Virginians.
- 1:02:03Al Downen, five innings of hitless pitching.
- 1:02:09Terrell Terry has come on. He's walked one man and allowed a single to another.
- 1:02:15I'm just on first and second.
- 1:02:17Harris Clark, bunch, and the play as Terry falls down is too late.
- 1:02:25Terry's last clock in the glass, he's dug a big divot.
- 1:02:31What a divot he does.
- 1:02:36He's got to be short to base hit.
- 1:02:42Now you hear some folks waking up.
- 1:02:51Three men on base.
- 1:02:55Donald Meyer on third, Don Wallace on second, Harris Clark on first, and the batter is Arch Lopez, the left-hand hitter.
- 1:03:02New York leading two to nothing, last of the sixth inning.
- 1:03:06Three runners lead away to wind up the pitch. It's low, ball one.
- 1:03:16Cuppet zone playing the toughest steps behind the runner at third.
- 1:03:20Three men lead away to wind up the pitch.
- 1:03:23One on nine and the high field is off of a base hit. Lawrence Downen on third, and the ball comes through Glantz at the end of the pitch.
- 1:03:32And the game is back up.
- 1:03:35The coach united the Glantz.
- 1:03:39He couldn't handle it. He had a chance on the second runner, that is Don Wallace, coming home.
- 1:03:46But all he did was jab and tag the man without the ball.
- 1:03:53So Arch Lopez lifts a solid single to center for two runs, scoring Donald Meyer and Wallace, sending Harris Clark to second.
- 1:04:06The tie ball game now, 2-2, and the Virginians have awakened.
- 1:04:15Now the batter is Jake Gibbs, who replaced Bob Smith in left-hand batter.
- 1:04:28Ralph Cherry to the stretch. The pitch is high, ball one.
- 1:04:36Now you can hear the hubbub of the crowd.
- 1:04:44You know that's helpful to a hamster, some of the other things.
- 1:04:48You do a game and they're all sitting down in this quiet, you start getting as quiet as they do.
- 1:04:54Runners lead away from first and second. The pitch to Jake Gibbs, one on, there's a high fly ball in the short left, could be trouble.
- 1:05:01Now Lopez comes on to grab it, and then he's going out.
- 1:05:05It's near the left field line.
- 1:05:09The runners hold up, one bounce, and here's Fred Hoppe.
- 1:05:17First baseman, another left-hand hitter.
- 1:05:23Foul out to the catcher and struck out.
- 1:05:27These left-hand hitters started picking on some right-hand pitching after looking at downing left-hand pitching for a while.
- 1:05:33The delivery inside for a ball. Each team is about to step into that pitch.
- 1:05:42Hoppe is a big fellow.
- 1:05:47Runners on first and second.
- 1:05:51Mark and Lopez of the pitch. Outside and high, ball two.
- 1:06:12Now the pitch. One on, a down ball, hits Richardson backhand, it over to Linds. Linds world close to first for a good double play.
- 1:06:21He did a complete circle. 180-degree turn after taking the toss from Richardson, who first of all made a sparkling draft almost behind second base.
- 1:06:34It was behind second base because as he tossed to Linds, Linds had to do a complete circle around to get in position to throw the first base.
- 1:06:47That's why pitchers do love good infielders.
- 1:06:51Two runs, three hits, no errors, one left on.
- 1:06:58And so at the end of six innings of play, the total is identical. Two runs, three hits, and no errors.
- 1:07:07In order to watch some batting practice, but particularly infield practice.
- 1:07:12And the infield just put on a show finger.
- 1:07:18No better show could have been put on in the execution of that double play.
- 1:07:23Now the Richardson race over, backhand of the ball, kind of flipped it sidewise with the glove.
- 1:07:29I mean he kept the glove, but I mean the end ball flipped it over.
- 1:07:33Here's Johnny Blanchard takes the strike.
- 1:07:36That's why Linds was facing center field when he took the toss and had to come all the way around to turn to throw the first.
- 1:07:44Johnny Blanchard takes it outside.
- 1:07:50It has slowly changed, but it's true. Many years ago, before my time, I never saw a piece coming forward.
- 1:07:56What show did he put on? There's a pitch that fouled on the right field line.
- 1:08:03There was a policeman with his back to the play talking to one of the attendants at the ballpark.
- 1:08:12And the attendant at the ballpark came close not to having anybody to talk to.
- 1:08:21Here's the pitch, low and inside, 2-2.
- 1:08:35Donald Meyers' pitch is flung on, hits hard on the ground to second. It's parked up, but it flips on to first, to Fred Hocky, and it's won away.
- 1:08:49Police Boyer, flying to right, flying to center.
- 1:08:56Tom Metcalfe, who showed so well for the Yankees' spring training.
- 1:09:01The pitch is low for the ball, is warming up for Richmond.
- 1:09:09Bob Meyer, warming up for New York.
- 1:09:14The next pitch is in there for the Tigers, 1-1. Yankees 2, Richmond 2.
- 1:09:28Now the delivery, hung on and missed.
- 1:09:32I couldn't help but think of the old Satchel Page saying among his many things,
- 1:09:43the pitch is into the dirt.
- 1:09:46When that ball almost hits the place and not hits.
- 1:09:50When you're running, don't look back, because somebody's out there gaining on you.
- 1:10:03Here's the pitch, inside, ball 3, 3-2.
- 1:10:16He had a whole list of things, wonderful.
- 1:10:22Now the pitch, and it's low and inside for a ball.
- 1:10:27Then I get ready to pitch while I warm up. I just stand there and just jangle my arms down by the side.
- 1:10:34Just keep jangling them, because that gets the juices going in your body.
- 1:10:40Then I have to warm up.
- 1:10:43Ralph Terry, the batter.
- 1:10:46There's the puck.
- 1:10:48Fred Hopke, first baseman plays it to second baseman, Harris Clark, to sacrifice.
- 1:11:03Here comes Phil Lynn, who singles to right center, lines it short and grounded to first.
- 1:11:22Donald Meyer to the stretch, here's the pitch, swung on, grand ball hits the short, the play will have to be the first base in time.
- 1:11:40The side is retired, no runs, no hits, no errors, one left on.
- 1:11:47And at the end of the 6 1 half innings, the score remains the Yankees 2 and the Virginians 2.
- 1:11:54This is W.O.K.O. in Albany, New York.
- 1:11:57Mr. Pour Yourself a Ballantine Beer.
- 1:12:00Ballantine is the beer that gives you a smile every time, the beer that won't fill you up, won't let you down.
- 1:12:05So go ahead, pour yourself a crisp, lively Ballantine, pour yourself a smile.
- 1:12:11Harris pitches in there for a strike.
- 1:12:15You know, as we've been broadcasting this game, it's been a little thing running through your mind.
- 1:12:22Here's the pitch, high for a ball.
- 1:12:25In terms of translation, the Richmond Virginians are wearing Yankee uniforms with the NY taken off and their own insignia on.
- 1:12:33And you keep wanting to speak of the home team in terms of Yankees.
- 1:12:45Here's the pitch.
- 1:12:46Swung on as a time to take my field and it is going foul.
- 1:12:52It's kind of funny, it's that.
- 1:13:04That would put the Virginians ahead and the ball went over a sign that puts you in the driver's seat.
- 1:13:11Now the pitch, swung on, went for a low outside pitch, a little anxious.
- 1:13:34Jack Matheson coming up, Yankees two, Virginians two.
- 1:13:45Ralph Terry, who succeeded Al Downing, delivers pitch one on and head out into right center.
- 1:13:53Round track station, two away.
- 1:13:57Don't forget opening day at Yankee Stadium, day after tomorrow, with a Boston Red Sox.
- 1:14:02Welcome home to Yankee.
- 1:14:08I know there's so many people out there, you can give them a stand on the back.
- 1:14:14We can't do it verbally, we'll do it with the clap of the hands.
- 1:14:18It'll be quite a big day, a historic day.
- 1:14:21Big Tegel takes inside and high, ball one.
- 1:14:26Red Sox are also there.
- 1:14:30On Thursday, they're left Wednesday open in the event of a weather possibility so they can have the opening day the next day.
- 1:14:38Here's the pitch, low and outside.
- 1:14:43Two balls, no strikes.
- 1:14:52Ralph Terry's delivery, high and inside, ball three.
- 1:14:58Bill Cooper was remarking earlier, we hadn't seen too much of Ralph Terry this spring.
- 1:15:03The pattern that the yogi devised in order to get pitchers more work with their rookie camp just a few miles from the base camp.
- 1:15:13Here's the pitch in their first track.
- 1:15:16They would send a lot of the pitchers down there to work.
- 1:15:22So in a sense, they got more work than actual game.
- 1:15:27Now the delivery, swung on and popped up to Joe Capitone, the mozova in the foul ground and one-handed.
- 1:15:36The side is retired.
- 1:15:38No runs, no hits, no errors, no one left on.
- 1:15:42And that's at the end of seven innings of play, two runs, three hits and no errors.
- 1:15:48Those are the totals for each team.
- 1:15:51Don Seeger running with Fred Muriel towards the dressing room and Stan Williams.
- 1:15:57Don Seeger was the trainer here and so was Joe Thoris at one time.
- 1:16:02We pause for station identification.
- 1:16:05This is 1460 Radio in Albany, New York, WOKO.
- 1:16:10Joe Cronin, president of the American League, will be at the stadium Tuesday.
- 1:16:30He'll give the award to you through Elton Howard, the most famous player.
- 1:16:35Gallimbado and his Royal Canadians will be on hand to entertain, a souvenir for all the folks who are there.
- 1:16:43And Phil Rizzuto has just gotten a job with Gallimbado for the day.
- 1:16:50How do you mean, cleaning the horns or a finger?
- 1:16:53Finger, oh, okay.
- 1:16:56Bobby Richardson leads off and Count now has two balls, no strikes on Bobby.
- 1:17:05I heard you.
- 1:17:07He's singing and playing the pick-a-lo.
- 1:17:13Bobby started to try to duck out of the way, goes right back to the pitcher, throws to first Richardson, still hasn't left the batter.
- 1:17:19Bobby trying to duck out of the way, actually sat on the ground, the ball hit his back, and it was an easy out, one to three.
- 1:17:27Here's Hector Lopez up to the first time.
- 1:17:30Bob Damaris while he was in there, had one single in three times at bat and a run batted in.
- 1:17:37Down my assist is over, strike call.
- 1:17:49Pitch is low.
- 1:17:51One on one, I'm Decker Archie Moore.
- 1:18:01Next pitch is on the inside corner, strike two call, one ball, two strikes.
- 1:18:12I think he's opening this game like he's going to have a big day against Richardson.
- 1:18:18Third strike, three balls.
- 1:18:27Now here's Archie Moore up for the first time at bat.
- 1:18:31Maybe Maddow was over too, got a base on balls while he was in the game.
- 1:18:37On deck, Cleve Boyle.
- 1:18:40No, on deck, Tom Thresh.
- 1:18:44First pitch is inside, ball one.
- 1:18:56Two out, nobody on it, two, two ball games.
- 1:18:59Curve is low, two balls, no strikes.
- 1:19:14Right hander back with a fastball hit, right back to the box, he's got on one hot close to first for the out.
- 1:19:21Nice hand for Stoudelmeyer, as he ties the Yankees in order here in the top of the eighth
- 1:19:26and at the end of seven and a half innings it's the Yankees two to the Juniors two.
- 1:19:40Getting ready to go in the bottom of the eighth inning, a tie ball game, two-two.
- 1:19:46That's Harry's on the mound.
- 1:19:52And we're going to have a pinch hitter for Meryl Stoudelmeyer.
- 1:20:00Wearing uniform number two, he's got the left-hand batter, Ike Butch.
- 1:20:13He's going to turn it around his box.
- 1:20:21But Hoppe, as quoted in the fair, this is a coach at first base.
- 1:20:24The first pitch is inside, ball one.
- 1:20:29Now, Stoudelmeyer, the Indians only have I think 14 men up here right now.
- 1:20:33A lot of them are still in Hollywood, a lot will be sent down.
- 1:20:36There they drive to center field, coming on fast, Tom Thresh coming on fast and he can't get it.
- 1:20:41A deep spin and a tentatively single for the pinch hitter.
- 1:20:50That's the fourth hit of a proud Harry and all four hits by the Virginians.
- 1:20:54What Harry is now down in with five innings without giving up a hit.
- 1:20:58Here's Ed John Wallace who's got the first pitch of the ball game for the Virginians in his seventh inning, a 10-to-the-left field.
- 1:21:04Boy, a move to the third now with a short side two-two.
- 1:21:07They are looking for the possible bunch.
- 1:21:09They throw to first, not in time.
- 1:21:17There's the stretch.
- 1:21:18Boy is coming in, a 50-quid round bunch at high in the air.
- 1:21:21Kyle Pepperstone has got it on a fly.
- 1:21:23Let's get back to first base.
- 1:21:37Ike Clark who beat out a bunch single in the sixth inning also fly to center bounce to second.
- 1:21:44A left-hand batter.
- 1:21:52Boy is still in on the infield grass.
- 1:21:55Runner leads away at first.
- 1:21:57There he goes and the pitch is low.
- 1:21:58The throw is wide and not in time.
- 1:22:02He takes a good pitch to steer line, a third ball that was low inside.
- 1:22:07An advantage hurry throw was wide at the back.
- 1:22:10Throw to stolen base and it puts the lead run at second base.
- 1:22:16Pitch to the ball through Irish clock.
- 1:22:24Stretch by Terry.
- 1:22:27He's got a ground over half-back throw by right here.
- 1:22:32Down he's got it coming on the floor as the floor is low off.
- 1:22:36Nice touch from the beginning one-way three-to-two.
- 1:22:41Boy, Pepperstone just had a deep pitch.
- 1:22:43Oh, then he's touching on that too.
- 1:22:46He's got a lot of work done down in spring training.
- 1:22:49Very proud of his lead team.
- 1:22:52Almost lost a couple there and a hard bouncing ball that bounced right over his right shoulder.
- 1:22:57Throw, run, battered in.
- 1:22:58Second hit for Irish clock.
- 1:23:00And the Virginia's now lead three-to-two.
- 1:23:03Here's Art Lopez bounce to second.
- 1:23:05Walks and single to center.
- 1:23:08Very pitchy.
- 1:23:09Starts to butt-pick for the first strike.
- 1:23:20Pepperstone holding fast, holding first against Irish clock.
- 1:23:29First throw to first.
- 1:23:30Walk inside.
- 1:23:33Lopez drove in two runs with his single to center field in the sixth inning.
- 1:23:38First is a changeup hitting the air to left center field.
- 1:23:40That's going to be trouble.
- 1:23:41And it's just coming up.
- 1:23:43And Lopez, the first hit to the side just, and that was Lopez.
- 1:23:50They're waving him in all the way.
- 1:23:52He loses, throw to the plate.
- 1:23:53While he's throwing from, he's got it to play on a beautiful relay.
- 1:23:56From Lopez to Linz to Blanton.
- 1:23:59And that second base for the double is Art Lopez.
- 1:24:02And it's just coming from, he's got it to play just, and that was Lopez.
- 1:24:07They're waving him in all the way.
- 1:24:08He loses, throw to the plate.
- 1:24:10From Lopez to Linz to Blanton.
- 1:24:13And that second base for the double is Art Lopez.
- 1:24:17The wind kept blowing that ball away from Tom Sessions.
- 1:24:20He tried to backhand it.
- 1:24:28Linz made a beautiful relay.
- 1:24:30One hopper right, two gunnybugs.
- 1:24:33Now to bring up Jake Yidd, now with two outs.
- 1:24:38And that second base, Art Lopez.
- 1:24:47Richmond leading 3-2 in the bottom of the eighth.
- 1:24:51Stretched by Terry.
- 1:24:53Touches and high foul by Al Finner at a county branch that is under.
- 1:24:59And Blanton takes it just in front of the stand.
- 1:25:02For Richmond in the bottom of the eighth, one run on three-base hit.
- 1:25:06No Yankee errors, one man left.
- 1:25:08At the end of eighth quarter, Richmond 3, the Yankees 2.
- 1:25:15Hey, you hear about John and Mike and Steve?
- 1:25:18Isn't that a word? What did they do?
- 1:25:20And Phil and Jack and Mary Lou.
- 1:25:22Come on, tell me, what did they do?
- 1:25:24They've all changed to Winston, every one.
- 1:25:26Oh, that's nothing new. I'll just tell you.
- 1:25:29How did you?
- 1:25:31Yes, just thinking of changing to a thousand changes.
- 1:25:35Changing to a filthy cigarette.
- 1:25:38Change to Winston.
- 1:25:40Because Winston, they showed up like a thousand cigarettes chosen.
- 1:25:45A modern filter and exclusive filter blend up front.
- 1:25:49Now you know why Winston is America's largest selling filter cigarette by far.
- 1:25:54Join the swing to Winston.
- 1:25:56Yes, just thinking of changing to a filthy cigarette.
- 1:26:00Change to Winston. Because Winston, they showed up like a thousand cigarettes chosen.
- 1:26:06Winston, they showed up like a thousand cigarettes chosen.
- 1:26:10Change to Winston.
- 1:26:16Well, don't forget, it'll be opening day Tuesday, April the 14th.
- 1:26:19And by the way, how many openings does that make it feel now?
- 1:26:22As the voice of the Yankees.
- 1:26:24Well, I'd have to go back and count on my sisters in the 39s.
- 1:26:30I worked with them in the Army for three years.
- 1:26:34And from 46 on, I've been doing new games now.
- 1:26:39In fact, before the war, we used to do the home games of Giants and Yankees.
- 1:26:44Never traveled.
- 1:26:46And so we were in both leagues at that time.
- 1:26:49That's a lot of openings.
- 1:26:51Yes, sir.
- 1:26:52We've got Tom Metcalf coming in now.
- 1:26:57Metcalf has shown brittleness for the Yankees in spring training.
- 1:27:02The decision had to be made between him and Mickelson.
- 1:27:06And it wasn't so much the fact, as I said, that Metcalf didn't look so well,
- 1:27:15but rather the style of pitching that felt that they'd go with Mickelson,
- 1:27:18at least to start with, because he can throw centers.
- 1:27:22Whereas Metcalf's type of pitching, he had a lot of balls up in the air.
- 1:27:30They had quite talked with him and told him to work on that little pitch.
- 1:27:34He's bound to make it a very intelligent fellow.
- 1:27:36Here's a pitch swung on, and there's a looper out over second for a base hit.
- 1:27:41And on the handle, too.
- 1:27:45Tom Trash hit one on the handle and pushed it over the head of the second baseman,
- 1:27:55Harris Park.
- 1:28:00And that's the Yankees' first hit since the second inning.
- 1:28:07Joe Pepitone, nothing to agree.
- 1:28:12Tom Metcalf's pitch is swung on and fouled it, that one.
- 1:28:20Billy Muffet, who started, gave up three hits in the first two innings
- 1:28:25and the Yankees two runs.
- 1:28:31Then he pitched two score openings, and Stoudelmeier went through the eighth
- 1:28:35without giving up a hit.
- 1:28:36And that's the delivery, swung on, hit foul.
- 1:28:50And just the reverse, Downing didn't give up a hit for five innings.
- 1:28:55Sanferri gave up three in the sixth and three in the eighth.
- 1:28:59Metcalf's pitch to Pepitone swung on and hits right below us.
- 1:29:04Opening day at Yankee Stadium Tuesday.
- 1:29:10Connor Yogan-Barras, Elston Howard, and a host of others.
- 1:29:18Dignitary's presence.
- 1:29:20Here's the pitch swung on and bounced foul down the first base line.
- 1:29:33Richmond three and the Yankees two.
- 1:29:38It's the first half of the ninth inning.
- 1:29:45Tom Metcalf all set.
- 1:29:47The pitch swung on as it bounced to the first.
- 1:29:49Hopke had to throw down the second for one, back to first to Metcalf nine times.
- 1:29:55It was awful close.
- 1:29:59Hopke threw down to Wallace and they knocked off fresh.
- 1:30:06And the shortstop's relay to Metcalf within an eyelet of completing the double play.
- 1:30:16Force out at second.
- 1:30:18Pepitone on first, Nevada.
- 1:30:21Johnny Blanchard.
- 1:30:26Tom Metcalf's delivery.
- 1:30:29It bounces away from the catcher over near the barrier and Pepitone moves on to second.
- 1:30:35That's a wild pitch.
- 1:30:38You can almost see what Metcalf is doing.
- 1:30:41Yogi and Ford had a long talk in about a half hour before they asked him to go back down to Richmond.
- 1:30:52That's what I learned, to keep the ball low.
- 1:30:55I think I have to have a little too low.
- 1:31:00Three to two, Richmond leads.
- 1:31:02Here's the pitch to Blanchard, swung on and bowled off.
- 1:31:05That ball's second.
- 1:31:19Pepitone moving off second.
- 1:31:23It's up high, fastball.
- 1:31:27June 1 the count.
- 1:31:28We're in the first half of the ninth inning.
- 1:31:29Richmond leading by a score of three to two.
- 1:31:45Pepitone leading away from second.
- 1:31:47Metcalf's delivery is low and inside.
- 1:31:51Green one.
- 1:31:59He's trying to make him hit on the ground.
- 1:32:10The stretch and the three-one pitch swung on and bowled down the first base line.
- 1:32:15Strike two, full count.
- 1:32:35Tom Metcalf in release.
- 1:32:38Full count on Johnny Blanchard.
- 1:32:41Pepitone on second.
- 1:32:44Three to two Virginians.
- 1:32:45And the pitch gets away from the catcher.
- 1:32:48He fired that one and I believe it hit.
- 1:32:51No it didn't.
- 1:32:52Blanchard sort of, yes it did.
- 1:32:55Pepitone had to go back to second.
- 1:32:58I saw Blanchard kind of bend over and back up a little and then suddenly straighten up and throw his cap.
- 1:33:04So the wild, what appeared to be a wild pitch, did not go to the Yankees advance because then Pepitone would have been on third where he could have scored on and out on a long fly.
- 1:33:21Blanchard hit by a pitch ball and here's Creek Boyer.
- 1:33:26One out in the ninth, three to Richmond. The pitch swung on and bowled back.
- 1:33:42And the batter is hit by a pitch ball, a dead ball, and the runners have to return to their bases unless by virtue of the fact that they're becoming a base runner, it courses the others along.
- 1:33:56Metcalf into the stretch. Here's the pitch to Boyer.
- 1:33:59Low outside.
- 1:34:05First to the ninth.
- 1:34:08But Daly starts to warm up for New York, Terry on deck.
- 1:34:13Richmond leading three to two. Pepitone leads off second. Blanchard off first and the pitch to Boyer. It's in there for a strike, a beautiful curve.
- 1:34:24The plate started to swing at that pitch as ever up at home plate.
- 1:34:34Metcalf seemed to return his own style of pitching suddenly.
- 1:34:38One ball, two strikes.
- 1:34:40The stretch and the pitch.
- 1:34:43That one's into the dirt going outside.
- 1:34:45A nice save by Jake Gibbs.
- 1:34:52Two balls, two strikes.
- 1:34:58Richmond three, New York two. First half of the ninth inning.
- 1:35:02One out. Pepitone leading off second. Blanchard off first and the pitch.
- 1:35:08It's again, it's the plate. Blanchard back is. Three and two to count.
- 1:35:17They're trying to keep that ball low.
- 1:35:25Of course hitting the ground ball or even find a hole, but the percentage is in favor of being handled by an in-theater.
- 1:35:34Full count one out. We'll watch the runners. Pepitone leads off second. Blanchard off first.
- 1:35:39They're holding the pitch. The swung on and fouled off. It's about to the plate.
- 1:35:51Jim Gleason looks into the dugout to see if Yogi's got any change.
- 1:35:56As far as the base runners are concerned.
- 1:35:59The dangers move in the ninth inning. Running them.
- 1:36:03The stretch. Runners taking their lead and then Metcalf steps off the rubber right quick.
- 1:36:10Sometimes you can pick up the fact of whether the runners intend to go or not.
- 1:36:15Pepitone leads off second. Blanchard off first. The stretch.
- 1:36:19Runners are holding the pitch. The swung on. It says fly a ball in to short it out.
- 1:36:23Art Lopez comes in under and loses it.
- 1:36:27And he moves.
- 1:36:31As Lopez picks up the ball and Pepitone is forced to third.
- 1:36:37Instead of playing it halfway.
- 1:36:40Pepitone apparently had an idea he was going to go back to second in tags.
- 1:36:44And Lopez who lost the ball in the sun.
- 1:36:51Now Boyer has left first base.
- 1:36:54Thinking the ball was caught but now the holler at him in the egg he's got to run back.
- 1:36:59But time has been called.
- 1:37:02Now Yuma, and that's the oddest thing.
- 1:37:04He thought the ball had been caught in the double play and the game over.
- 1:37:10Now he's laughing.
- 1:37:15Now I was wondering why time was called and I understand.
- 1:37:19The left field.
- 1:37:21Ostrich 2 and the Alpine fans.
- 1:37:25Wanted some glass.
- 1:37:27And he's the one that called time.
- 1:37:29Else the game would have been over.
- 1:37:35Isn't that strange Bill?
- 1:37:37I've never seen anything like it though.
- 1:37:39Boyer thought the ball was caught and Pepitone was doubled at third and he was in for home.
- 1:37:46And when I say home I mean where he lives in the metropolitan area.
- 1:37:53But the left fielder had asked for time to get glasses.
- 1:37:58And when they hollered at him in the egg he's done got it.
- 1:38:00He'd already crossed the third baseline.
- 1:38:04He turned around and starts running back to first.
- 1:38:09Jill didn't know what had happened.
- 1:38:11That's the first time I saw that.
- 1:38:16So even with the outfielder losing the ball in the sun, it's not a base hit.
- 1:38:21It's a fourth play.
- 1:38:23Lopez to Mephyson.
- 1:38:29And Boyer saved by the grace of Lopez asking for the glasses.
- 1:38:36And here now with two down is Pedro Gonzalez.
- 1:38:41Man-pending, 3-2 Virginia.
- 1:38:44Blanchard on second.
- 1:38:45Boyer on first.
- 1:38:46The pitch is won on.
- 1:38:47The last five will be for Mark Lopez.
- 1:38:49He's going to get under it.
- 1:38:50He's waiting and the ball game is over.
- 1:38:54And Gonzalez flies to deep left.
- 1:39:04No runs.
- 1:39:06One hit.
- 1:39:08No errors and two men left on.
- 1:39:11I'll be back in a moment for the total to highlight.
- 1:39:17You get a smile every time with a Valentine.
- 1:39:29Wow, what a beer, that's Valentine.
- 1:39:33You get a smile every time with a Valentine.
- 1:39:37Wow, what a beer, that's Valentine.
- 1:39:41Beer at the beer, the most we're pressing around.
- 1:39:45Won't fill you up, won't let you down.
- 1:39:49So get a smile every time with a Valentine.
- 1:39:53Get a smile every time.
- 1:39:56Make a Valentine beer.
- 1:39:59Great ball game, great glass of Valentine.
- 1:40:20There's a happy combination for you.
- 1:40:22Hope you're enjoying a Valentine right now.
- 1:40:24And if not, what are you waiting for?
- 1:40:26Get a smile every time.
- 1:40:28Get crisp, lively Valentine.
- 1:40:30Wow, what a beer.
- 1:40:32And Al Downing started out and the Yankees started out against Muppet
- 1:40:37as if they would have a pleasant afternoon.
- 1:40:39When they scored runs in each of the first two innings,
- 1:40:42Linz singled, Richardson walked, Maris singled Linz home.
- 1:40:48And then Elston Howard blasted one over the left field fence in the second inning.
- 1:40:53There was two to nothing, but Muppet settled down,
- 1:40:55blanked the Yankees over the next two innings.
- 1:40:57Without a hit.
- 1:40:58In fact, the Yankees went from the second inning to the ninth inning without a base hit.
- 1:41:05As Muppet hurled two hit the thinning and Stoudelmeyer, who came on in the fifth,
- 1:41:10pitched four hit the thinnings and then came the wild ninth.
- 1:41:15And where two situations were involved with the runner on second thinking about tagging up
- 1:41:23instead of playing it halfway and then being forced its third
- 1:41:25when the left fielder lost the ball in the sun.
- 1:41:31And thus was able to force in a third, depriving the runner of a base hit.
- 1:41:37And of course giving the Virginians an important out.
- 1:41:40And Boyer who was running the first, caught the outfielder, had caught the ball,
- 1:41:45and there was a double play at third and a game over and had left first base
- 1:41:48and crossed the third baseline headed to the dugout.
- 1:41:52And was saved by the fact that time had been called by the left fielder who had dropped the ball
- 1:41:58in order to get some sun grass.
- 1:42:00Something I've never seen.
- 1:42:03And then Tom Metcalf came in and worked that while he was in there working tonight.
- 1:42:14And then Al Downey just to the reverse hurled five no hit innings and was taken out.
- 1:42:22And Ralph Terry came on and then the Virginians jumped on him.
- 1:42:28Stottlemeyer the pitcher got a walk.
- 1:42:31Don Wallace single to the left.
- 1:42:35Harris Park got a base hit. Art Lopez a base hit.
- 1:42:39The Virginians were in and then in the eighth inning, clutch hitting for Stottlemeyer, single to center.
- 1:42:46Harris Park singled and Art Lopez doubled to left for the third run.
- 1:42:52With a possible fourth run being cut down to play on a beautiful relay from Lopez to Lenz
- 1:42:58and Lenz's perfect throw to Blanchard at the plate.
- 1:43:01So that's the way the runs were scored.
- 1:43:03Stottlemeyer the winning pitcher and the losing pitcher Ralph Terry.
- 1:43:07Music
