Latest / Foul Territory / Chelsea Janes: Checkups on Mets, Yankees, Nationals & Orioles
Transcript
- 0:03Speaker 1: Hey, let's talk to SNY insider Chelsea Jans right now
- 0:06Speaker 1: about Mets Yanks and maybe a little bit more.
- 0:08Speaker 2: Chelsea, great to have you on, And what.
- 0:10Speaker 1: Did you think of the series for the Mets?
- 0:13Speaker 2: Will start there? They win this series, it was exciting.
- 0:16Speaker 1: They had the big comeback on Sunday, which they hadn't
- 0:18Speaker 1: done in a million years, like two but they also
- 0:21Speaker 1: lost Clay Holmes.
- 0:22Speaker 2: So how do you kind of recap the last few days?
- 0:26Speaker 3: Yeah, Friday night was one of the more depressing nights
- 0:29Speaker 3: I've seen around a baseball team in a while, after
- 0:31Speaker 3: Holmes broke his leg. I mean, they had no idea
- 0:33Speaker 3: that was coming until you know, they happened to go
- 0:35Speaker 3: get xtrays and oh my gosh, their best picture is out.
- 0:38Speaker 3: Mendoza looked down. It was kind of it felt, honestly
- 0:41Speaker 3: like the death knell. Right, you're not going to come
- 0:44Speaker 3: back and win this series against the Yankees. You don't
- 0:46Speaker 3: have your best picture anymore. Now this is really over.
- 0:49Speaker 3: And then they win Saturday with David Peterson in an opener,
- 0:53Speaker 3: which seemed unlikely, and then all of a sudden Sunday
- 0:56Speaker 3: it's like their best comeback when in literal years since
- 0:59Speaker 3: you know, Peter So home it against Devin Williams in
- 1:01Speaker 3: that in that game in the twenty twenty four playoffs.
- 1:04Speaker 3: So it's definitely the kind of game they're going to
- 1:06Speaker 3: have to win with the kind of people they're going
- 1:08Speaker 3: to have to win it with if they want to
- 1:09Speaker 3: get back into this. It's certainly a positive because there's
- 1:13Speaker 3: a lot of resilience on display that we hadn't seen
- 1:15Speaker 3: from them. But man, when you start to look at
- 1:18Speaker 3: the depth and the rotation, the lack of depth, I
- 1:20Speaker 3: should say, you know, good feelings all around, but it's
- 1:24Speaker 3: going to take something I think pretty special for them
- 1:26Speaker 3: to turn this into a full recovery.
- 1:30Speaker 4: Was the Taylor home run not special? Was that not
- 1:32Speaker 4: something they can build on because a lot of teams
- 1:34Speaker 4: look for one moment or something like that, And the
- 1:37Speaker 4: three run homer by Taylor in the ninth and then
- 1:39Speaker 4: winning it obviously in the tenth on the on the
- 1:41Speaker 4: single I guess we call it by Benjiir the last
- 1:44Speaker 4: inning where the two Yankees guys ran into each other.
- 1:45Speaker 4: Is that not a moment that can turn them around?
- 1:49Speaker 3: Yeah? If it's not, you know, nothing can I think
- 1:51Speaker 3: you're totally right. It's just It's hard to see, right,
- 1:55Speaker 3: It's hard to see how this lineup, as beat up
- 1:57Speaker 3: as it is, and the rotation now is beat up
- 2:00Speaker 3: as it is, can sustain. This doesn't mean they can't,
- 2:03Speaker 3: you know, but I watched the twenty fifteen Nationals. They had,
- 2:06Speaker 3: you know, Strasburg Sure's or that whole big rotation. They
- 2:08Speaker 3: just kept getting guys hurt. And even when those guys
- 2:11Speaker 3: came back late in the season and they were still
- 2:13Speaker 3: in it, it took a little while to get them going.
- 2:15Speaker 3: So I think I have a little PTSD there of like, Okay,
- 2:18Speaker 3: you can hang in there, but will Lindor be what
- 2:20Speaker 3: you want when he gets back? Is Robert going to
- 2:22Speaker 3: be anything? What are you going to get from Polanco?
- 2:24Speaker 3: You know it's not impossible, but it's it's going to
- 2:27Speaker 3: be tough. But you're right, like, if that's not the moment,
- 2:29Speaker 3: I don't know what the moment is. So you know,
- 2:31Speaker 3: you'd rather obviously have that than not.
- 2:35Speaker 5: Is there is there the nucleus to start dominating because
- 2:40Speaker 5: where they're at now, the hole they're in, they need
- 2:42Speaker 5: people that are going to dominate, not just I would
- 2:45Speaker 5: That's why I would say about the Tyrone Taylor Homer like,
- 2:48Speaker 5: it's cool, but you're talking about like a like a
- 2:50Speaker 5: platoon guy, so like the nights he's not starting. How
- 2:53Speaker 5: is this? You know, you build momentum by guys that
- 2:57Speaker 5: are carrying this team, Juan Soto, and you say and
- 3:00Speaker 5: Francisco and Dork, do they have the nucleus to say, Man,
- 3:03Speaker 5: when these six guys are in the lineup, they are
- 3:05Speaker 5: just going to carry us for an entire month.
- 3:08Speaker 3: I think there's a world in which they do. That
- 3:11Speaker 3: world includes Francisco Lindor coming back. It probably includes Louise
- 3:14Speaker 3: Robert Junior getting healthy, which we all know you can't
- 3:17Speaker 3: necessarily count on. But what they do have right now
- 3:21Speaker 3: is two hitters in Carson Bench and aj Ewing who
- 3:23Speaker 3: look like they've been here for years and are kind
- 3:26Speaker 3: of carrying them and I think, to be honest, have
- 3:29Speaker 3: absolutely no idea how hard this is supposed to be.
- 3:31Speaker 3: Right Like, I think their advantage right now is that
- 3:33Speaker 3: they're carrying a team that they shouldn't be able to carry,
- 3:35Speaker 3: but they don't know it's supposed to be hard, and
- 3:37Speaker 3: they're just kind of having fun and going out there,
- 3:39Speaker 3: and you know, they're good at bats, have improved at bats,
- 3:42Speaker 3: from Mark Fianto's and Brett Batty and other guys they
- 3:45Speaker 3: really need. So you know, it's definitely a lineup as
- 3:49Speaker 3: constructed where if everyone is good and Batty and Biento's
- 3:52Speaker 3: take the next step and you know, if Boba Schett
- 3:55Speaker 3: figures it out. That's one that I think is really
- 3:57Speaker 3: hurting them. Yeah, they can be good. They can keep up,
- 4:01Speaker 3: you know, if they can, you know, get Holmes back
- 4:03Speaker 3: later this summer, then the rotation can keep up. But
- 4:06Speaker 3: they're gonna have to tread water for a really long
- 4:08Speaker 3: time until you get the guys in there you know
- 4:11Speaker 3: can do it like the Lindors and those guys right now,
- 4:14Speaker 3: they're hoping that guys who haven't done it can do it.
- 4:17Speaker 3: So far, so good the last week or so, But
- 4:19Speaker 3: I don't know that that's necessarily a recipe for long
- 4:22Speaker 3: term success.
- 4:24Speaker 4: Hey, you mentioned Lindor coming back at some point. I mean,
- 4:27Speaker 4: I was watching these games this weekend. He was engaged
- 4:29Speaker 4: on the bench. Is this the most we've seen him engage?
- 4:31Speaker 4: I mean he was the first one out there. He
- 4:34Speaker 4: was banging the dugout padding. Is this what they need
- 4:37Speaker 4: from Lindor when he comes Not only now, but when
- 4:39Speaker 4: he comes back.
- 4:41Speaker 3: Yeah, you know, it was noticeable to me in spring
- 4:44Speaker 3: training as well as when he first got you know,
- 4:46Speaker 3: and he had the handmaid in spring training, right, so
- 4:48Speaker 3: he couldn't be participating normally until really the very end.
- 4:52Speaker 3: But he was pretty absent, you know, for a guy
- 4:54Speaker 3: that I had understood was a big part of this clubhouse.
- 4:57Speaker 3: And I think is he just wasn't much because he
- 5:00Speaker 3: was injured. He wasn't his place, he felt, I think so.
- 5:04Speaker 3: And then he gets hurt again and he kind of
- 5:06Speaker 3: you know, has to kind of go and do rehab
- 5:08Speaker 3: and he's not a part of things again. So his
- 5:11Speaker 3: role in this new group I think hasn't really had
- 5:13Speaker 3: time to evolve. He does seem a lot more comfortable
- 5:17Speaker 3: the last few weeks, you know, I think he's been
- 5:20Speaker 3: in the clubhouse more visibly. He's definitely obviously been very
- 5:23Speaker 3: active in the dugout. He hasn't traveled with them, so
- 5:26Speaker 3: that's part of why you haven't seen them a lot.
- 5:28Speaker 3: But the one thing I think it has been clear
- 5:30Speaker 3: to me about him is even when they're on the road,
- 5:32Speaker 3: you know, he's posting on Instagram like big Win or
- 5:34Speaker 3: whatever it is, like he wants to seem engaged. He
- 5:38Speaker 3: wants to be a good teammate and a leader of
- 5:41Speaker 3: this team, and I think it's complicated coming into a
- 5:44Speaker 3: brand new clubhouse in the year where you know, he
- 5:47Speaker 3: hasn't been able to play regularly, because it's like, what
- 5:49Speaker 3: do you do with that? How do you lead when
- 5:52Speaker 3: you're in the injured list? So he's been kind of
- 5:54Speaker 3: interesting to watch, but I do see a lot more
- 5:56Speaker 3: comfort evolving. And you know, I think him being with
- 5:59Speaker 3: the team being a dugout is only a positive. You know,
- 6:02Speaker 3: He's certainly not a negative presence in any way.
- 6:07Speaker 1: Some wireless plans can get a little bit crazy, a
- 6:11Speaker 1: little bit off the charts expensive. Mint Mobile can get
- 6:16Speaker 1: you started with three months of premium wireless for fifteen
- 6:20Speaker 1: bucks a month.
- 6:21Speaker 2: Pretty good.
- 6:22Speaker 3: I like that.

- 6:25Speaker 4: to keep more mobile plan down and mint Mobile is

- 6:31Speaker 4: family members, You can do all that for just fifteen
- 6:33Speaker 4: bucks a month.

- 6:37Speaker 1: if you like bougie drinks. All plans come with high
- 6:40Speaker 1: speed data and unlimited talk and text delivered on the
- 6:43Speaker 1: nation's largest five G network. If you like your money,

- 7:02Speaker 1: options available, taxes and fees extra.
- 7:05Speaker 2: See mint mobile for details.
- 7:08Speaker 5: We talk about this all the time, not just with
- 7:10Speaker 5: the Mets, but teams that are struggling with high payrolls.
- 7:14Speaker 5: Who's the leader on this team when Francisco's out, when
- 7:18Speaker 5: Juan Soto's out, and now Francisco Alvarez is out, Like,
- 7:23Speaker 5: who is that guy on this team? Because there was
- 7:26Speaker 5: some rumblings before that, ah this team and then they
- 7:29Speaker 5: switched everybody up. Who is the leader on this team
- 7:32Speaker 5: to right the ship and make this ten of fifteen
- 7:36Speaker 5: actually sustainable for the rest of the year.
- 7:39Speaker 3: I think it's a really complicated question, right. We obviously
- 7:42Speaker 3: heard a lot about it last year and I was
- 7:44Speaker 3: not here for that, but from what I can glean,
- 7:46Speaker 3: I think there were a lot of people Brandon Neimo, PETERL. Bonzo,
- 7:49Speaker 3: you know, Lindor, who sort of viewed themselves as that person,
- 7:53Speaker 3: but maybe there wasn't kind of one person pulling everyone,
- 7:58Speaker 3: you know, that one person everyone far. Obviously, Sodo comes
- 8:01Speaker 3: in and is probably the best player, and that complicates things.
- 8:04Speaker 3: I think what we're seeing this year is another clubhouse
- 8:09Speaker 3: that kind of has to figure out what it is.
- 8:11Speaker 3: I mean, you know, Marcus Simmons, a guy who's been
- 8:13Speaker 3: around forever and can be kind of a heart o
- 8:15Speaker 3: when it comes to plan every day and stuff. But
- 8:17Speaker 3: I think he's been on the quieter side because he's
- 8:19Speaker 3: not totally comfortable in the room. You know, Boba Schett,
- 8:22Speaker 3: who's obviously had some big hits in his career, I
- 8:24Speaker 3: think is still kind of feeling like where he belongs,
- 8:26Speaker 3: and and Lindor has been out, so he hasn't sort of,
- 8:31Speaker 3: you know, established himself as the main guy, which I think,
- 8:35Speaker 3: you know, given the contracting signed, he is long expected
- 8:37Speaker 3: to be. So I think it's Sodo. But I also
- 8:42Speaker 3: don't think Sodo is going to go out of his
- 8:44Speaker 3: way to do that. And I say that and I
- 8:46Speaker 3: think people would take that as, oh, he doesn't care
- 8:48Speaker 3: about his teammates, blah, blah blah. No. I just think
- 8:51Speaker 3: he the best version of Juan Soto is just playing
- 8:54Speaker 3: baseball and having people come to him. I think if
- 8:57Speaker 3: you've noticed the last few nights, you know, Carson, benj
- 9:00Speaker 3: and aj Ewing, it's like Sodo and the white guys
- 9:03Speaker 3: in the outfield and they're like little buddies and it's
- 9:05Speaker 3: just kind of an evolving relationship that's kind of cute
- 9:07Speaker 3: to watch. But I think that's him. I think that's
- 9:09Speaker 3: his best role in this clubhouse is not going in
- 9:12Speaker 3: and saying I'm the leader, follow me, but rather sitting
- 9:15Speaker 3: in his locker in the corner, letting guys kind of
- 9:17Speaker 3: come over, you know, having his handshakes with everyone and
- 9:20Speaker 3: just mashing like you know. And I think he is
- 9:23Speaker 3: the leader in the lineup because he is the best
- 9:25Speaker 3: sitter in the lineup and the one that can carry
- 9:27Speaker 3: this team. And I think he is also sort of the,
- 9:31Speaker 3: if not the leader, like the lighthouse in the clubhouse
- 9:34Speaker 3: of like, if this guy's good, however this guy's reacting,
- 9:37Speaker 3: you know, we can kind of follow him. But I
- 9:39Speaker 3: still think this is a group that has a lot
- 9:40Speaker 3: to kind of figure out about who it is and
- 9:43Speaker 3: who fits where because you know, there's a lot of
- 9:45Speaker 3: turnover in that room, and the first two months, I
- 9:48Speaker 3: think you've seen the uncertainty that comes with that.
- 9:51Speaker 5: You answered that question perfectly. Thank you, gosh, thank you
- 9:54Speaker 5: that wow answering it without answering it perfect because we
- 9:58Speaker 5: know what the answer is. But I gotta go to
- 10:01Speaker 5: where basically this series hinged the bullpen. The Yankees bullpen
- 10:07Speaker 5: is playing for the Mets, who then pitched better than
- 10:10Speaker 5: the Yankees bullpen, which is now the Yankees bullpen. But
- 10:14Speaker 5: was the Mets bullpen? Is there an issue there for
- 10:18Speaker 5: the Yankees to get out pitched in the bullpen by
- 10:23Speaker 5: a bullpen that has been struggling this year for the
- 10:26Speaker 5: Mets and the Yankees were the ones that Or was
- 10:30Speaker 5: this just a blip in the radar? And you know what,
- 10:32Speaker 5: we'll chalk it up to that.
- 10:36Speaker 3: Yeah. I think to this point in the season, until
- 10:39Speaker 3: about Friday evening, I think the Yankees probably felt pretty
- 10:42Speaker 3: good about letting Weaver and Williams go and the group
- 10:45Speaker 3: they built last year at the deadline. You know, by comparison,
- 10:48Speaker 3: I think Bennar had been really sturdy and all that.
- 10:51Speaker 3: I don't necessarily think they feel bad about their bullpen now.
- 10:54Speaker 3: But I do think what you saw is I think
- 10:58Speaker 3: they just kind of lacked the dominant option back there, right.
- 11:01Speaker 3: I think Camille Deval has the potential, hasn't really become
- 11:05Speaker 3: that guy we thought he'd be when he was early
- 11:06Speaker 3: with the Giants. You know, Bennar is really sturdy, but
- 11:09Speaker 3: he's not going to absolutely blow you away. Tim Hill's
- 11:12Speaker 3: been really effective, but kind of same thing, right, He's
- 11:14Speaker 3: not an obvious fireman. So I think, you know, in
- 11:19Speaker 3: the way that all good teams worry about their bullpen
- 11:21Speaker 3: this time of year, the Yankees probably are looking at
- 11:24Speaker 3: adding at the deadline. They always do. I don't necessarily
- 11:27Speaker 3: think that means it's a problem, but I do think
- 11:28Speaker 3: if you look at what is otherwise a very well
- 11:31Speaker 3: rounded team, that's the place you're trying to add. And
- 11:34Speaker 3: I just think they need a couple of big, big names,
- 11:36Speaker 3: big arms back there so that Bennard gets bumped back
- 11:38Speaker 3: and Tim Hill can be used sort of fully in
- 11:41Speaker 3: a lefty role and you can just kind of get
- 11:44Speaker 3: the best out of everyone without asking too much.
- 11:47Speaker 5: Does it look like they thought they had a dominant
- 11:50Speaker 5: piece in that bullpen just based on how the season started,
- 11:53Speaker 5: the off season when and some of these guys were
- 11:55Speaker 5: who were brought over last year at the trade deadline
- 11:58Speaker 5: to be that dominant piece, because if you don't, if
- 12:02Speaker 5: they never actually had that dominant piece, or they thought, well,
- 12:05Speaker 5: we saw Bednar as a guy who we know what
- 12:07Speaker 5: he did his All Star years and we're going to
- 12:09Speaker 5: get back to that. If that's the case, then they
- 12:12Speaker 5: kind of built this team a little bit short for
- 12:14Speaker 5: what they want to do is win the World Series,
- 12:17Speaker 5: because you need a dominant that if not three dominant
- 12:21Speaker 5: back end guys, no matter how good your rotation is,
- 12:24Speaker 5: you need that guaranteed three outs in the ninth inning.
- 12:26Speaker 5: And I agree with you, I don't think they had
- 12:28Speaker 5: that from the start of the year. So is this
- 12:30Speaker 5: a construction thing.
- 12:33Speaker 3: I guess yes, but I also kind of understand it.
- 12:36Speaker 3: I think one of the things Aaron bram has said
- 12:38Speaker 3: multiple times as their bullpen was pitching really well early,
- 12:41Speaker 3: better than I thought based on the names, was like,
- 12:44Speaker 3: I think some of these guys are just better than
- 12:45Speaker 3: you guys realize. And you know, Brent Hedrick is a
- 12:48Speaker 3: guy like people probably don't think about it much much.
- 12:50Speaker 3: He's been really good. I mean, he's been a real
- 12:53Speaker 3: fine for them. That's just like how they operate. You know,
- 12:56Speaker 3: Brian Cashman has said, we don't we don't go out
- 12:58Speaker 3: of our way not to sign big name for the bullpen.
- 13:01Speaker 3: They just haven't done it. And I think, you know,
- 13:04Speaker 3: having not been around forever here, that they're just very
- 13:07Speaker 3: comfortable trying to see what's available in July. So I
- 13:11Speaker 3: don't necessarily see it as like a glaring constructioner. I
- 13:14Speaker 3: think it's probably a more conservative approach to a group
- 13:18Speaker 3: they know they can build on later. And there's this
- 13:21Speaker 3: the whole other part of it that I think gets
- 13:23Speaker 3: looked over a little bit, which is that they've got
- 13:25Speaker 3: a ton of starting pitching dip, which means they're probably
- 13:29Speaker 3: going to be able to bump some people back there
- 13:31Speaker 3: when it comes to it. Right. So you know, Ryan
- 13:34Speaker 3: Weathers has pitched so well, maybe he's now off that
- 13:36Speaker 3: list and certainly in the rotation. But if Freed comes
- 13:39Speaker 3: back and Cole comes back, I mean Weathers has looked
- 13:41Speaker 3: great and you can imagine the stuff playing up as
- 13:43Speaker 3: a lefty in that role. Carlos lagron Hae throws a
- 13:46Speaker 3: million miles an hour. He's in triple A. A guy
- 13:49Speaker 3: who just basically played his way into roster consideration in
- 13:53Speaker 3: the spring. You know, I think they want to keep
- 13:56Speaker 3: him stretched out if they can. But if you get
- 13:58Speaker 3: to September, I mean that's somebody that I think you
- 14:01Speaker 3: can see in the back end for sure. So I
- 14:03Speaker 3: think they also just kind of see the depth that
- 14:05Speaker 3: exists in their system and think they can patch from there.
- 14:08Speaker 3: But by and large, like if you had to say
- 14:10Speaker 3: where did the Yankees go wrong constructing their roster, I
- 14:13Speaker 3: think you point to the bullpen and say this is
- 14:16Speaker 3: weaker than it needs to be to win World Series.
- 14:18Speaker 3: But also in another way, it's it's probably the easiest
- 14:21Speaker 3: unit to upgrade, and I don't necessarily think it's gonna
- 14:24Speaker 3: doom them before they get a chance to do that.
- 14:29Speaker 4: Jelse, one of your old teams used to cover is
- 14:30Speaker 4: the Washington Nationals. Are Are they for real? Because they're
- 14:34Speaker 4: twenty three, twenty four, they're around, they score a ton
- 14:36Speaker 4: of runs. I mean, if they get any kind of pitching,
- 14:39Speaker 4: they win. But is there are this team for real?
- 14:41Speaker 4: Can this team stay around the five hundred mark and
- 14:45Speaker 4: be competitive and show that natitude like they used to.
- 14:50Speaker 3: Nattitude? Yeah? I don't know. I don't think they have
- 14:53Speaker 3: the pitching. To be honest, what I always thought about
- 14:57Speaker 3: this team under Paul Taboni was the they would probably
- 15:01Speaker 3: be ten wins better purely because they have such a
- 15:03Speaker 3: clear direction now, because there are so many detailed plans
- 15:07Speaker 3: for all these young guys of like, here's how we're
- 15:09Speaker 3: going to get you better, here's the vision, And that
- 15:11Speaker 3: just didn't exist before. You know, I think you saw
- 15:14Speaker 3: guys like James Wood and now departed Mackenzie Gorge just
- 15:17Speaker 3: get demoralized last year, Like if you look at the
- 15:18Speaker 3: way they kind of fall off fell off. Yeah, I
- 15:22Speaker 3: just think it was a tough place to play because
- 15:23Speaker 3: it didn't seem like there was a way out of
- 15:25Speaker 3: the holder. And and now under Tiboni and Bhuterra and
- 15:28Speaker 3: that whole crew, it's like, here's the plan, here's how
- 15:30Speaker 3: you're going to get better. Here's how we're going to
- 15:32Speaker 3: get better. So I think, purely on vibes, they were
- 15:35Speaker 3: going to get better. That being said, I think they've
- 15:37Speaker 3: made people better, right, I mean, their lineup has been really,
- 15:39Speaker 3: really good. They've done a good job finding people to
- 15:42Speaker 3: add to it who can hit. But Brady House there
- 15:45Speaker 3: were times where he looked like he was totally a
- 15:47Speaker 3: lost cause he's not anymore. You know. C. J. Abrams
- 15:50Speaker 3: has been good. They've been able to kind of keep
- 15:51Speaker 3: him locked in.
- 15:53Speaker 2: You know.
- 15:53Speaker 3: I just think they're they're doing a good job getting
- 15:55Speaker 3: the most out of guys and offensively. I think maybe
- 15:57Speaker 3: they're not going to leave the league, you know, like
- 15:58Speaker 3: they have at times early. But I think they're going
- 16:01Speaker 3: to be pretty sturdy and continue to get better. I
- 16:03Speaker 3: think ultimately they're going to run out of pitching. I
- 16:05Speaker 3: think you could argue they already have if you see
- 16:06Speaker 3: the way the rotation has been at times. But you know,
- 16:09Speaker 3: I think they're one of those teams that might be
- 16:12Speaker 3: having their good year before you think they are. You
- 16:14Speaker 3: know that they can take the leap frog a year
- 16:16Speaker 3: in development and are a little better than you think.
- 16:19Speaker 3: And the real question will be how do you get
- 16:21Speaker 3: the pitching to catch up to where the hitting is
- 16:24Speaker 3: by next year if there is a next year, because
- 16:27Speaker 3: I think that's obviously the part that's going to take
- 16:28Speaker 3: a little longer when they get their hands on the
- 16:30Speaker 3: minor league system there.
- 16:33Speaker 5: We love our dog Bella, who splays out in the

- 16:41Speaker 5: her belly.
- 16:43Speaker 2: She's a cutie.

- 17:34Speaker 1: Chelsea them coming off a series win against the Orioles,
- 17:38Speaker 1: including a ten run drubbing on Saturday definitely made them
- 17:42Speaker 1: look good and made everyone else pay attention to them
- 17:45Speaker 1: or in the area, made people continue to pay attention
- 17:49Speaker 1: to Baltimore.
- 17:50Speaker 3: So on.
- 17:50Speaker 1: To finish with that question for you, are you surprised
- 17:53Speaker 1: to see where Baltimore is? I mean, you know, you're
- 17:55Speaker 1: looking at a Yankees team just now coming off like
- 17:58Speaker 1: one of their bad stretches two and seven stretch. They're
- 18:01Speaker 1: still in great shape in the Al East and Baltimore
- 18:05Speaker 1: is sinking fast. What are your thoughts on what you've
- 18:08Speaker 1: seen from them and how the winning window if they
- 18:10Speaker 1: don't make the playoffs this year appeared to be a
- 18:13Speaker 1: really really quick one.
- 18:15Speaker 3: Yeah, that's a great point. I am surprised, right Like
- 18:20Speaker 3: I think maybe we, I being one of these people,
- 18:23Speaker 3: overestimated how much they could count on the young guys,
- 18:26Speaker 3: this young wave of talent that came up when it
- 18:28Speaker 3: was Rechmond and Henderson and all that. I think their
- 18:30Speaker 3: front office overestimated how quickly those guys would become stars
- 18:33Speaker 3: or whatever, or that they could become stars. But I
- 18:36Speaker 3: also think if you look at what Michael Lias has
- 18:38Speaker 3: done year by year, I think he's learned some lessons, right.
- 18:41Speaker 3: I think he's he got went out there this winner
- 18:44Speaker 3: and got veterans Bassett, you know, Pete Alonzo, obviously, Taylor Award,
- 18:48Speaker 3: Ryan Helsley, people who have been there before, who I
- 18:51Speaker 3: think have helped some of these young guys understand what
- 18:54Speaker 3: it takes. And it's still not happening. You know, they
- 18:56Speaker 3: went out and they got starting pitching. I think they're
- 18:59Speaker 3: continued over is that you got to pay for the
- 19:01Speaker 3: big guys in the rotation if you really want to win.
- 19:03Speaker 3: And maybe Bassett isn't that, you know, but even that
- 19:08Speaker 3: I think shouldn't have knocked them down as far as
- 19:10Speaker 3: they are right now. So I don't know. I mean,
- 19:13Speaker 3: one thing I always think about the Orioles is, and
- 19:17Speaker 3: this sounds funny, like I've always thought a guy like
- 19:20Speaker 3: Tommy Famm, who they just signed to a myaor League deal,
- 19:22Speaker 3: would be really fun to kind of put in that
- 19:24Speaker 3: clubhouse because he is so different than these polished kids
- 19:28Speaker 3: who come up in the Orioles system and know exactly
- 19:31Speaker 3: what to say to the media and you know, are
- 19:33Speaker 3: kind of perfectly well behaved guys, which they all are.
- 19:37Speaker 3: I just think they've always needed a little edge, right,
- 19:39Speaker 3: and and you know, obviously, I don't think Tommy Fan's
- 19:42Speaker 3: going to come up and change their season, But I
- 19:43Speaker 3: just mean there's some there's some edge they don't have,
- 19:45Speaker 3: and I don't know how you create that. I thought
- 19:48Speaker 3: Albernas might do it. Maybe he is doing it and
- 19:50Speaker 3: we're not saying it yet, but there's just something that
- 19:52Speaker 3: misses there with the people they bring in, and I
- 19:55Speaker 3: don't know what it is. I credit Michael ISAs for
- 19:57Speaker 3: trying to figure it out, but I think times running
- 19:59Speaker 3: out because it's just not coming together year after year
- 20:03Speaker 3: after year.
- 20:06Speaker 4: My question on this is Chelsea. You know, you mentioned
- 20:08Speaker 4: all this talent they have, but Gunner is obviously the
- 20:11Speaker 4: one guy who's really shining. He's off to a terrible
- 20:14Speaker 4: start this year, right. I feel watches it bats, He's
- 20:16Speaker 4: hitting balls hard, he's getting frustrated, you know. I think
- 20:19Speaker 4: he's putting a lot of pressure on himself to lead
- 20:22Speaker 4: this team. Holiday hasn't played yet, Kobe Mayo, Westburg's out
- 20:26Speaker 4: for the year, right, Beavers hasn't done a whole lot.
- 20:29Speaker 4: Athlete's having a nice start. Right, It's like they can't
- 20:32Speaker 4: ever get everybody to align and play well together. Is
- 20:36Speaker 4: that a development thing, do you think, or is that
- 20:39Speaker 4: just the big leagues are really hard.
- 20:41Speaker 5: And maybe one day it'll come together, will be good again.
- 20:45Speaker 3: That's a good question too. I don't know. I certainly
- 20:47Speaker 3: think they have had a lot of injuries to those
- 20:52Speaker 3: young guys over the years, and I don't know if
- 20:55Speaker 3: that's a systemic issue. I know they've tried to make
- 20:57Speaker 3: some changes to training and stuff like that over the years,
- 21:01Speaker 3: So I don't know, you know, I don't know how
- 21:03Speaker 3: much blame sort of they should shoulder for having a
- 21:06Speaker 3: lot of pictures get injured over the years, which they have,
- 21:08Speaker 3: and having a lot of these you know, young core
- 21:10Speaker 3: get hurt. The other thing is I just I do
- 21:16Speaker 3: think there has been a lot of pressure on guys
- 21:18Speaker 3: like Gunner and Adley over the years, and they've never
- 21:20Speaker 3: quite figured out how to handle it or to take
- 21:22Speaker 3: that pressure off. You know. I think I thought Pete
- 21:24Speaker 3: Alonzo would do it. Maybe he you know, maybe we
- 21:26Speaker 3: still see that. But yeah, there's there's something in these
- 21:30Speaker 3: guys that are coming up from the Orioles that is
- 21:32Speaker 3: preventing them from playing well consistently and from sort of
- 21:37Speaker 3: taking that next step into stardom consistently and the way
- 21:41Speaker 3: I see some of those guys, I think it's pressure.
- 21:42Speaker 3: I think it's just an inability to kind of play
- 21:45Speaker 3: free at the major league level. Injuries mean that they've
- 21:48Speaker 3: probably had a lot more on them than they need
- 21:50Speaker 3: pressure wise, and you know, I don't know who you
- 21:53Speaker 3: blame for that, but I think it's kind of hard
- 21:55Speaker 3: to deny, you know, watching them at this point.
- 21:59Speaker 5: Has that quite been post to Craig Craig Alburn as
- 22:03Speaker 5: a new manager just came from Cleveland, where everybody would agree,
- 22:08Speaker 5: besides Jose Ramirez, you're just getting the most out of
- 22:12Speaker 5: those guys. And right now people would say, well, you
- 22:15Speaker 5: know what, Orioles players were really high ranked as they're
- 22:19Speaker 5: coming up through They hit the ball hard, they throw
- 22:22Speaker 5: it really hard, they run fast. But the Guardians don't
- 22:26Speaker 5: have that in their minor league system. And yet they're
- 22:28Speaker 5: winning with players from their minor league system. So has
- 22:31Speaker 5: that question been posed what to see he see differently
- 22:34Speaker 5: from the people that he saw that come up in
- 22:39Speaker 5: the Cleveland system and play in the big leagues and
- 22:41Speaker 5: come up through the oriole system and play in the
- 22:43Speaker 5: big leagues.
- 22:44Speaker 3: Not that I've seen anywhere on the record, and not
- 22:47Speaker 3: that I asked him, you know, in the winter meetings
- 22:49Speaker 3: or anything like that. It's a great question, it should
- 22:52Speaker 3: be posed. But one of the things I've wondered is
- 22:59Speaker 3: I don't is if they're as good as they think
- 23:02Speaker 3: they are right the prospects, Like it's I think it's
- 23:04Speaker 3: also possible that they're just not evaluating guys well that right,
- 23:09Speaker 3: Like this is no not going to Athley Reritchmond, who
- 23:12Speaker 3: I think is a really really good player, but they
- 23:13Speaker 3: it was Bobby Witter, Athley Retchmand, and you know, one
- 23:17Speaker 3: of them is is a superstar and the other has
- 23:19Speaker 3: been trying for a long time. Like maybe it's that simple,
- 23:21Speaker 3: like maybe the evaluation is just not as good as
- 23:24Speaker 3: we think. Obviously that means a lot of other people
- 23:26Speaker 3: who evaluate players Baseball America stuff like that, scouts are
- 23:29Speaker 3: also wrong. But it could be it could be that,
- 23:33Speaker 3: But I don't know. And you know, Albernas is someone
- 23:35Speaker 3: interesting to bring up because he's I think he it
- 23:37Speaker 3: was the perfect fit for them because he could bring
- 23:39Speaker 3: some levity and maybe make those guys take it a
- 23:41Speaker 3: little less seriously. And even he's kind of run into
- 23:44Speaker 3: whatever that wall is of like you just can't get it,
- 23:47Speaker 3: you know, you can't get them where you want them,
- 23:50Speaker 3: So I don't know, but I would love to ask
- 23:52Speaker 3: him that. And and if you guys get them, you
- 23:54Speaker 3: should because I'd be fascinated.
- 23:57Speaker 2: Yeah. Hey, that's a good point.
- 23:58Speaker 1: When you start looking back at Bobby Wit versus Aadley Rushman,
- 24:01Speaker 1: you got to nail your.
- 24:02Speaker 5: Can't make that. Let see, I can't.
- 24:04Speaker 4: I can't say that because at the time, Adley was
- 24:06Speaker 4: like the Sensus number one. He's been to the All
- 24:08Speaker 4: Star Game. I mean, he's done a lot of things.
- 24:11Speaker 4: I mean, that's that's the one. Now, if you want
- 24:13Speaker 4: to say they should have traded other people, like if
- 24:16Speaker 4: they should have traded Kobe Mayo instead of someone else,
- 24:18Speaker 4: so they should have traded Hairstad and someone else, I
- 24:21Speaker 4: can see that. But to go back and say a
- 24:24Speaker 4: college guy who was the switch hitting catcher with power
- 24:27Speaker 4: from both sides, was supposed to be the cornerstone of
- 24:29Speaker 4: your franchise, you take him one to one. Those guys
- 24:31Speaker 4: don't grow on trees.
- 24:32Speaker 5: I can't.
- 24:33Speaker 4: I cannot. I cannot argue that pick because I mean, listen,
- 24:36Speaker 4: Bobby WIT's great, but he also hasn't want anything either.
- 24:39Speaker 2: Yeah, but I mean he's a better player. I know
- 24:42Speaker 2: if you.
- 24:43Speaker 4: Have a college kid, if you have a college guy,
- 24:46Speaker 4: especially in a catcher like a position like a catcher
- 24:49Speaker 4: that is the hardest position to find in the sport.
- 24:52Speaker 4: He switch hits, he hits for power. He'supposed to be
- 24:54Speaker 4: incredible leader. That is impossible to pass up them. Sorry,
- 24:57Speaker 4: and he's made the All Star team a couple of times. Yes,
- 24:59Speaker 4: he's been hurt, but it's not like Adley's been an
- 25:01Speaker 4: abject failure. I mean he's they just haven't won the
- 25:05Speaker 4: playoff games, and so that's the one. Listen, you can
- 25:09Speaker 4: make the argument he should have traded this guy or
- 25:10Speaker 4: that guy for this instead of this guy. But to
- 25:12Speaker 4: say Adley over Bobby Whitt, Yeah, it's easy to look
- 25:15Speaker 4: back now, but I promise you if you would have
- 25:17Speaker 4: pulled a hundred scouts, probably ninety eight of them would
- 25:19Speaker 4: have said take Adli Rutchman.
- 25:23Speaker 3: Totally.
- 25:25Speaker 5: I mean they would have said higher ceiling. With Wit,
- 25:27Speaker 5: I think everybody would have said higher ceiling. But I
- 25:29Speaker 5: mean the other part of the age. They didn't even
- 25:31Speaker 5: bring up both extremely high character guys. So you take
- 25:35Speaker 5: the older guy that's closer, and you say, yeah, I
- 25:41Speaker 5: can't I can't argue that is Wit a better player. Absolutely.
- 25:45Speaker 5: I think if you ask Adley that you would say
- 25:47Speaker 5: he's a better player.
- 25:49Speaker 1: It's good, good discussion, just to look back now at
- 25:51Speaker 1: the roster construction and where they're at and how they
- 25:53Speaker 1: tanked for six years to get to this and this
- 25:55Speaker 1: isn't looking good. So I think they're going to rebound
- 25:58Speaker 1: this year and at least be in the mix. But
- 26:00Speaker 1: it's getting tougher to say that.
- 26:02Speaker 2: Chelsea.
- 26:03Speaker 1: I really appreciate the extended time. We love talking to you,
- 26:06Speaker 1: love your work on.
- 26:06Speaker 2: U S and Y as well. Thank you for joining us,
- 26:09Speaker 2: Thanks for having me
