- 0:43SPEAKER_00: Um, I get my slippers ready.
- 0:45SPEAKER_01: Are you like a um terry cloth robe?
- 0:47SPEAKER_01: Yeah, what color is that robe?
- 0:48SPEAKER_01: I need to know.
- 0:49SPEAKER_00: It's blue, dark blue.
- 0:50SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 0:51SPEAKER_00: Um do you have slippers?
- 0:52SPEAKER_00: Yeah.

- 0:53SPEAKER_00: A thousand percent.
- 0:54SPEAKER_01: Like, are they over the toe or are they like a full full slipper?
- 0:57SPEAKER_01: Full slipper, okay.
- 0:59SPEAKER_00: Fuzzy slipper.
- 1:00SPEAKER_00: All right.
- 1:00SPEAKER_00: Um what do I do?
- 1:03SPEAKER_00: I get firewood ready to go.
- 1:05SPEAKER_00: That's that's awesome.
- 1:06SPEAKER_00: I have a little bit from last year still, but I gotta get it.
- 1:09SPEAKER_01: Are you uh hey, let's open the doors because it's you know 60 outside, but let's start a fire.
- 1:14SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:14SPEAKER_00: Okay, good.
- 1:15SPEAKER_01: That's good.
- 1:15SPEAKER_00: Yes, yes.
- 1:16SPEAKER_00: I'm considering building a fire pit in the backyard for this year.
- 1:20SPEAKER_00: We're doing a little work to the yard.
- 1:22SPEAKER_00: Let's just buy one.
- 1:23SPEAKER_00: I know.
- 1:23SPEAKER_00: Testing, test it out.
- 1:24SPEAKER_01: It's not the same, but it'll buy a year.
- 1:26SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah.
- 1:27SPEAKER_00: You know.
- 1:28SPEAKER_00: Um, what is going on?
- 1:30SPEAKER_00: This is like an El Nino year.
- 1:32SPEAKER_00: I don't know what that means.
- 1:32SPEAKER_00: It's supposed to be a bad winter though, right?
- 1:34SPEAKER_01: Well, if it's anything like to do with the summer, like if it's you know super hot and it's gonna be super cold, um man, I mean it was hot.
- 1:42SPEAKER_01: Still hot.
- 1:43SPEAKER_00: It's still hot.
- 1:43SPEAKER_00: I was out this weekend at the baseball field and it's still very hot.
- 1:49SPEAKER_00: Yeah, so I don't know.
- 1:50SPEAKER_00: But um now I get painted as this guy who loves like summer.
- 1:56SPEAKER_00: I do like nice weather also.
- 1:58SPEAKER_00: You like fall?
- 1:59SPEAKER_00: Spring.
- 2:00SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 2:00SPEAKER_00: I do.
- 2:01SPEAKER_00: I enjoy like a nice 72-degree day, also.
- 2:04SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 2:04SPEAKER_00: I'm not a psycho.
- 2:05SPEAKER_00: Just check.
- 2:06SPEAKER_00: Like I like nice weather.
- 2:07SPEAKER_00: That's that's not for you to determine.
- 2:10SPEAKER_01: Oh man.
- 2:12SPEAKER_01: Welcome to 100% maybe as we talk about what Jeff wears as he sits around a fire and watches football.
- 2:19unknown: Yes.
- 2:20SPEAKER_00: All those how oh my gosh.
- 2:22SPEAKER_00: Sorry, man.
- 2:23SPEAKER_00: I don't want to talk about the cowboys.
- 2:25SPEAKER_00: Uh how old, man, did we just start this?
- 2:27SPEAKER_00: We just talked about the weather.
- 2:29SPEAKER_00: Weather.
- 2:29SPEAKER_00: That's very important.
- 2:31SPEAKER_00: So far we're gonna be there.
- 2:31SPEAKER_01: That transition happened for me a long time ago, buddy.
- 2:33SPEAKER_01: I've I turned 55 in a couple days.
- 2:36SPEAKER_01: Feeling it.
- 2:37SPEAKER_01: Next week, feeling good.
- 2:38SPEAKER_01: Monday.
- 2:39SPEAKER_01: Uh Monday.
- 2:40SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 2:41SPEAKER_00: So then this is your last podcast as a 54-year-old.
- 2:45SPEAKER_00: Is how do you feel about that?
- 2:48SPEAKER_01: Um 55's kind of like I'm gonna go buy a robe.
- 2:52SPEAKER_01: I will not.
- 2:52SPEAKER_01: I won't robe because I'm hot natured.
- 2:54SPEAKER_01: I would die.
- 2:55SPEAKER_00: 55's kind of a cool age.
- 2:57SPEAKER_00: Like I feel like you were saying, it's speed limit, there's songs about it.
- 3:02SPEAKER_00: It's kind of cool.
- 3:03SPEAKER_01: Uh, I don't know about any of that stuff.
- 3:04SPEAKER_01: I feel like I have a little bit of knowledge on board, and I got some pretty decent mobility.
- 3:10SPEAKER_01: Not fast.
- 3:11SPEAKER_01: No, no, don't get don't try to juke me because I'll fall down.
- 3:13SPEAKER_01: But like probably these are the years where you can accomplish most things.
- 3:16SPEAKER_01: So you can still take the stairs.
- 3:19SPEAKER_01: I could I could take the stairs.
- 3:20SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 3:21SPEAKER_01: A lot.
- 3:21SPEAKER_01: We walked a lot of stairs here.
- 3:23unknown: Yeah.
- 3:23SPEAKER_00: So that's good.
- 3:24SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 3:24SPEAKER_00: Keep that going.
- 3:25SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 3:26SPEAKER_00: Well, do you want to put some of that wisdom to the uh to the test today?
- 3:30SPEAKER_00: It's gonna take all of it.
- 3:31SPEAKER_00: Dude, we got a lot here.
- 3:32SPEAKER_00: Let's take a nap after this one.
- 3:34SPEAKER_00: Got a lot here.
- 3:35SPEAKER_00: So is there a disclaimer that it's too much to read on a Sunday morning, so read ahead.
- 3:43SPEAKER_00: Did you say that?
- 3:44SPEAKER_01: Yep, we're in a study on Hebrews, and it's a lot.
- 3:47SPEAKER_01: It's a lot, lot.
- 3:48SPEAKER_01: Uh, and we're about to get into the lot stuff.
- 3:51SPEAKER_01: Like uh not not lot, and into the deeper, harder to understand, not hard as in hard truths, just information.
- 4:00SPEAKER_00: Information.
- 4:01SPEAKER_00: A lot.
- 4:01SPEAKER_00: And if it's maybe not as familiar to us as a non-Jewish, mostly a non-Jewish audience.
- 4:10SPEAKER_01: Just talking to someone in the hallway, I think.
- 4:13SPEAKER_01: So we're getting into chapters five, six, and seven.
- 4:16SPEAKER_01: This is the understanding of the Jesus as high priest, connection to Melchizedek.
- 4:24SPEAKER_01: They believe that the book of Hebrews was written before the temple was destroyed.
- 4:30SPEAKER_01: So think about a first century Jewish person.
- 4:32SPEAKER_01: They still had the sacrificial system.
- 4:35SPEAKER_01: And the writer of this is a first century Jewish person who believes in Jesus.
- 4:39SPEAKER_01: So they have a sacrificial system, but they have Jesus and they're trying to wrestle the theology to the ground of him being the sacrificial lamb, all those things.
- 4:48SPEAKER_01: I honestly bet a whole I mean uh this it doesn't matter what I think.
- 4:53SPEAKER_01: But there's probably a very short window.
- 4:56SPEAKER_01: They think that this was written somewhere in the late 50s, or excuse me, late 60s, because the temple was destroyed in 70.
- 5:02SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I've been saying that wrong all day.
- 5:04SPEAKER_01: Um, late, late 60s.
- 5:06SPEAKER_01: So there was a window where the context of this letter, this book, would have made incredible sense to the people because they still had the temple, they were still doing sacrifices, they still had high priests, all of those things were still actuated in front of them.
- 5:25SPEAKER_01: Five years later, that system was destroyed, everybody was scattered, and then though as long as those people were alive, they would have been able to understand this.
- 5:34SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 5:34SPEAKER_01: But here we sit here today, and if you're sacrificing animals, somebody's coming to arrest you.
- 5:39SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 5:40SPEAKER_00: So it's not a and you've missed you've missed something along the way.
- 5:42SPEAKER_00: And you missed yeah, you missed something.
- 5:45SPEAKER_01: You missed a lot.
- 5:46SPEAKER_01: So I I think it's it's a challenge to understand this, but he wrote it in context to a context, and they would have, well, they would have said, okay, let's go.
- 5:57SPEAKER_01: But we got work.
- 5:58SPEAKER_01: We got work to do.
- 5:59SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 6:00SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 6:00SPEAKER_02: I it's so good, man.
- 6:02SPEAKER_02: It's really it's really good.
- 6:04SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 6:05SPEAKER_01: Um it's just not a warm, fuzzy feeling.
- 6:07SPEAKER_01: It's not your uh inspirational sermon that m warms your heart.
- 6:12SPEAKER_01: There can be parts of it that do when you start to understand what it means to have Jesus as a high priest.
- 6:16SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 6:17SPEAKER_01: But still that's a big disconnect from what our normal way of thinking would be.
- 6:22SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 6:22SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 6:23SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 6:24SPEAKER_02: Well start us off with I know you're not gonna read all five.
- 6:31SPEAKER_01: Um but you have things in there you want.
- 6:35SPEAKER_01: Well so would you like me to paraphrase it and you can just you can throw some ideas out?
- 6:38SPEAKER_02: Yeah, but yes.
- 6:40SPEAKER_02: But let me throw out a question.
- 6:45SPEAKER_02: I love questions.
- 6:47SPEAKER_02: Um I don't know if it's a question.
- 6:50SPEAKER_00: I just is it the big thought of why he has to establish this thought of Jesus as high priest?
- 6:58SPEAKER_00: Because what did the high priest represent or do for them?
- 7:02SPEAKER_00: Because it's it was essential to then how they interacted with the holy god.
- 7:09SPEAKER_01: The short answer was um you need somebody to represent you to God.
- 7:16SPEAKER_01: So the system was created that there would be a a lineage of people through the Levitical tribe or the tribe of Levi.
- 7:24SPEAKER_01: There was a person with that name and his descendants.
- 7:28SPEAKER_00: Great grandson of Abraham, right?
- 7:30SPEAKER_01: So they had people had responsibility for the temple.
- 7:33SPEAKER_01: So God just basically gave them a job and they took care of all of the things of God.
- 7:39SPEAKER_01: Uh so it was a royal priesthood.
- 7:42SPEAKER_01: I mean, you think of I say royal, it's just it's how it unfolded.
- 7:46SPEAKER_01: And um the stories we get of Jesus' birth, you know, uh Zachariah was in the he was a priest.
- 7:53SPEAKER_01: Like you go down and you look at he was in the temple when God spoke to him, like you see these things pop up in scripture.
- 7:59SPEAKER_01: Um so the writer of Hebrews, and I let's let's just do this.
- 8:04SPEAKER_01: Let's rip this band-aid off.
- 8:05SPEAKER_01: Yeah, okay.
- 8:06SPEAKER_01: Uh Hebrew's hard to understand.
- 8:09SPEAKER_01: So let's just look at it in chunks.
- 8:12SPEAKER_01: As a first, if you just kind of separate your mind and think of yourself as a first century Jewish person, you have what's known as a sacrificial system.
- 8:22SPEAKER_01: So you have sin in your life, but you have to offer a sacrifice, a blood sacrifice to atone for that sin.
- 8:31SPEAKER_01: That's their system they had in place.
- 8:33SPEAKER_00: And Leviticus 16, I think it is, the day of atonement.
- 8:36SPEAKER_00: Those were the once-a-year sacrifices, the Super Bowl of the uh super bowl of getting rid of sin.
- 8:43SPEAKER_00: And and the high priest, like that was his main job.
- 8:46SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and he was the one that officiated, if you will, and made sure that everything was done right.
- 8:51SPEAKER_01: But the high priest had work all year long that he did to moderate for the people.
- 8:55SPEAKER_01: So the first century Jewish person had this knowledge, a running knowledge of a couple big important things: a high priest, a sacrifice, and they had different sacrifices for different things, a tabernacle.
- 9:10SPEAKER_01: Now, tabernacle is the word that's used, but they were in a temple time.
- 9:13SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 9:14SPEAKER_01: So the tabernacle, I think, was in the Old Testament.
- 9:17SPEAKER_01: It moved.
- 9:17SPEAKER_01: They would move it from place to place, but very similar.
- 9:20SPEAKER_01: The temple was patterned after the tabernacle.
- 9:22SPEAKER_01: There is a there is a place that has incense, there's a place that has bread.
- 9:26SPEAKER_01: All of them are symbolic based on what Moses taught them to represent the throne room of God.
- 9:33SPEAKER_01: And then there's a curtain that separates from what they call the Holy of Holies and the place where God's presence would dwell.
- 9:42SPEAKER_01: And and sacrifices would be made, blood would be sprinkled in the Holy of Holies on the on the altar, all of those things they knew about.
- 9:49SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and only the high priest was able to enter.
- 9:51SPEAKER_01: And only the high priest could go in there.
- 9:53SPEAKER_01: So the high priest had a very specific role, but but but I said all that to say this.
- 9:56SPEAKER_01: Remember, they had a priest, a high priest, they had a sacrifice, they had a tabernacle, they also had what's known as a covenant, the Mosaic covenant gave them that law, that sacrificial system.
- 10:09SPEAKER_01: As we move over these next two weeks, you're gonna see the writer of Hebrews explain to you how Jesus fulfilled all those things.
- 10:19SPEAKER_01: He's the high priest.
- 10:21SPEAKER_01: Kat next week is going to teach you about the covenant.
- 10:25SPEAKER_01: He gives us a better covenant that's gonna govern the rules.
- 10:28SPEAKER_01: Then we're gonna talk about the tabernacle.
- 10:31SPEAKER_01: That's in one of her chapters, because there has to be a place to offer this, but but the writer's gonna say it's not the tab, it's not a building.
- 10:38SPEAKER_01: There is a real holy of holies, right?
- 10:40SPEAKER_01: So he's gonna say he went into that.
- 10:41SPEAKER_00: Yeah, because that was modeled after what's happening.
- 10:44SPEAKER_01: That's right.
- 10:44SPEAKER_01: That was just a foreshadowing of the real place.
- 10:46SPEAKER_01: And then there's also a sacrifice, and he's gonna offer that sacrifice.
- 10:50SPEAKER_01: So what's completely lost on us is all of that.
- 10:54SPEAKER_01: So you have to imagine you're that person and he's gonna give you all of these pieces.
- 10:58SPEAKER_01: The cool thing is just keep hanging on.
- 11:00SPEAKER_01: We're gonna get three weeks from now, we're gonna talk about faith.
- 11:02SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 11:03SPEAKER_01: And we're gonna say, if you didn't understand all that, good.
- 11:05SPEAKER_01: You didn't need to.
- 11:06SPEAKER_00: Just have some faith.
- 11:07SPEAKER_01: Put the key in your car, turn the car on.
- 11:09SPEAKER_01: You don't know if the gas what the gas is doing.
- 11:11SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 11:11SPEAKER_01: Just drive the car to where you need to go.
- 11:12SPEAKER_01: That's your faith.
- 11:13SPEAKER_01: You're gonna activate the faith, it's gonna take you where you need to go.
- 11:16SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 11:16SPEAKER_01: So our we, our job is is to reconcile that here's the problem.
- 11:22SPEAKER_01: We'll tell them the problem up front is to reconcile that Jesus is the high priest, but there's a problem.
- 11:27SPEAKER_00: There's a big theological problem the writer has if he's gonna establish Jesus as high priest.
- 11:32SPEAKER_01: That's right.
- 11:32SPEAKER_01: Because in the Mosaic covenant, in order to be a priest or a high priest, you have to be related to Levi from the Levitical tribe.
- 11:39SPEAKER_01: Yep.
- 11:39SPEAKER_01: And Jesus is not, he's what?
- 11:41SPEAKER_01: Judah.
- 11:42SPEAKER_01: Judah.
- 11:42SPEAKER_01: He's from the tribe of Judah.
- 11:43SPEAKER_01: So that's a pr that's a huge problem for the writer of Hebrews.
- 11:47SPEAKER_01: So now he's got to go back in and figure out what to do.
- 11:50SPEAKER_01: And he chooses one of the most theologically not rich, rich people from Genesis named Melchizedek.
- 12:02SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 12:03SPEAKER_00: Which we had a heated debate already over the story.
- 12:05SPEAKER_01: Well, he and I have already fought over it.
- 12:06SPEAKER_01: We made up, and now we're gonna fight again.
- 12:09SPEAKER_01: In in Genesis chapter 14, verses uh so you can have the references.
- 12:14SPEAKER_01: Uh-huh.
- 12:15SPEAKER_01: Genesis 14, verses 17 through 20, you get the entire story.
- 12:22SPEAKER_01: That's all you get.
- 12:24SPEAKER_01: It's it's three or four verses, really three verses, that tell you everything and all that scripture has to say specifically about Melchizedek.
- 12:34SPEAKER_01: Now, later, David, many years later, writes a psalm about a priest from the order of Melchizedek.
- 12:44SPEAKER_01: So it's prophetic.
- 12:45SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 12:46SPEAKER_01: And the writer of Hebrews goes, Oh, he grabs that joker and pulls it into our writing today.
- 12:51SPEAKER_01: So you have three verses about a mysterious person that shows up in Genesis.
- 12:56SPEAKER_01: The king of Salem.
- 12:57SPEAKER_01: Yeah, the king of Salem.
- 12:59SPEAKER_01: The word Salem means peace.
- 13:01SPEAKER_01: So the king of peace, the word the name Melchizedek means king of righteousness.
- 13:05SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 13:06SPEAKER_01: So the king of righteousness, the king of peace, shows up in Genesis, blesses Abraham.
- 13:13SPEAKER_00: Abraham blesses Abraham.
- 13:15SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 13:16SPEAKER_01: Yeah, blesses Abraham.
- 13:17SPEAKER_01: The writer of Hebrews is going to say, and we're jumping ahead, but this will help you.
- 13:20SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 13:20SPEAKER_01: The writer of Hebrews says the superior blesses the inferior.
- 13:24SPEAKER_01: So if Melchizedek blesses Abraham, then Melchizedek is superior.
- 13:29SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 13:29SPEAKER_01: Then something happens.
- 13:31SPEAKER_01: Abraham, so first record of this, uh, pays a tithe or 10% to Melchizedek.
- 13:39SPEAKER_01: The inferior path the tithe to the to the superior.
- 13:45SPEAKER_01: So you have to remember he's building this case that Melchizedek is supreme.
- 13:50SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 13:51SPEAKER_00: And also a priest, because the blessings, the Levitical priests received a tithe as well that that went to that.
- 13:59SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 14:00SPEAKER_01: Well, so uh well let's do let's tackle that when we get there.
- 14:02SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 14:02SPEAKER_01: But but uh also one other thing.
- 14:04SPEAKER_01: In that story, it's really cool.
- 14:05SPEAKER_01: This blows your mind.
- 14:08SPEAKER_01: In that middle of that Genesis three verses of Melchizedek, Melchizedek shows up with bread and wine.
- 14:14SPEAKER_01: And so many people go, oh, right?
- 14:18SPEAKER_01: Many people believe it's a Christophany, yeah, that it was Jesus showing up as the king of Salem and blessing Abram.
- 14:27SPEAKER_01: In Judaism, they hold it in various different ways, but predominantly believe that Melchizedek, they would say God, they wouldn't say Jesus was God showing up and blessing Abraham.
- 14:39SPEAKER_01: And there's instances all throughout scripture of God showing up and and and visiting with Abraham and talking to him.
- 14:46SPEAKER_01: So it wouldn't be too uncommon to have that, but they already hold that.
- 14:50SPEAKER_01: So for the writer of Hebrews to grab that shouldn't be too odd for us.
- 14:54SPEAKER_01: It's just strange for us to have it.
- 14:57SPEAKER_01: So that's the foundational work that we needed to do for today.
- 14:59SPEAKER_01: And it only took us 50 minutes to get there.
- 15:01SPEAKER_01: So let's do it.
- 15:02SPEAKER_00: Without understanding some of that, you'd be really lost.
- 15:05SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I think.
- 15:06SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 15:07SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 15:07SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 15:07SPEAKER_01: We're watching uh this is like uh um Lord of the Rings, right?
- 15:11SPEAKER_01: I mean, it's really cool stuff, except real.
- 15:13SPEAKER_01: Except real.
- 15:14SPEAKER_01: Except real.
- 15:14SPEAKER_01: So better.
- 15:15SPEAKER_01: Way better.
- 15:16SPEAKER_00: So much better, dude.
- 15:17SPEAKER_00: Jesus is greater.
- 15:18SPEAKER_01: Greater and better.
- 15:19SPEAKER_01: Greater and better.
- 15:20SPEAKER_01: What do you want to talk about?
- 15:21SPEAKER_00: Um I don't know, man.
- 15:27SPEAKER_00: So how about, yeah, how about verse two?
- 15:29SPEAKER_00: This is what the writer of Hebrews thinks about us.
- 15:32SPEAKER_01: It's my one of my favorite verses.
- 15:34SPEAKER_00: How does that how does that make us feel?
- 15:36SPEAKER_01: First of all, uh in chapter 5, verses 1 through 4, it's a job description for a priest.
- 15:41unknown: Right.
- 15:42SPEAKER_01: And what does he say, Jeff?
- 15:44SPEAKER_01: Well, the problem this is why you're listening.
- 15:46SPEAKER_01: Go ahead.
- 15:46SPEAKER_00: The reason we need a high priest is because we're ignorant and wayward.
- 15:51SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 15:53SPEAKER_01: He said he is talking about the high priest, not not Jesus, he's just talking about the description of a high priest.
- 15:58SPEAKER_01: He is able to deal greatly with the ignorant.
- 16:01SPEAKER_01: Gently.
- 16:02SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 16:02SPEAKER_01: I'm sorry, I'm sorry, excuse me.
- 16:03SPEAKER_01: Gent gently with the ignorant and wayward.
- 16:07SPEAKER_01: But then he tells you why.
- 16:09SPEAKER_01: Since he himself is subject to weakness.
- 16:12SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 16:12SPEAKER_01: Or is ignorant and wayward himself.
- 16:15SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 16:16SPEAKER_00: Yep.
- 16:17SPEAKER_00: Which is a good baseline to establish if you're going to establish a greater high priest, then we're kind of setting the bar here.
- 16:23SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 16:24SPEAKER_00: Because on the Day of Atonement, before the priest could offer a sacrifice for the people, they had to offer one for themselves.
- 16:30SPEAKER_01: And offer sets a sacrifice for his own sins.
- 16:32SPEAKER_01: And now you're getting to see the picture of why Jesus is better or greater.
- 16:35SPEAKER_01: He did not have to.
- 16:36SPEAKER_01: Yep.
- 16:36SPEAKER_01: Um, so please don't miss this point.
- 16:40SPEAKER_01: Uh scripture is not silent on um on uh understanding your preacher, right?
- 16:48SPEAKER_01: If you have church hurt because a preacher was a jerk, yep.
- 16:52SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 16:53SPEAKER_01: That's you yeah.
- 16:54SPEAKER_01: And I'm not excusing them.
- 16:56SPEAKER_01: Preachers should not be jerks, but they are, we are, I am, ignorant and wayward.
- 17:00SPEAKER_01: And always have been.
- 17:01SPEAKER_01: And always have been.
- 17:02SPEAKER_01: That's right.
- 17:02SPEAKER_01: So, so uh uh I'm not trying to excuse any of that.
- 17:06SPEAKER_01: I'm just trying to say, yeah, you you should not give um uh there should be no blind devotion.
- 17:14SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 17:14SPEAKER_00: I think that's a very practical, real, real world thing too, and a good reminder for us to people that pour into our lives, we have the a special connection to, but you cannot put them beyond where they need to be.
- 17:29SPEAKER_00: Still flawed, still human, still in need of a savior, just like we are.
- 17:33SPEAKER_01: A perfect gospel in the hands of imperfect people.
- 17:36SPEAKER_01: I'm not I'm not trying to excuse, I'm trying to actually go the other way and say you should not have blind devotion to any person like that.
- 17:43SPEAKER_01: Uh preachers can be abusive and can be harmful.
- 17:46SPEAKER_01: So uh use spiritual discernment, use all those things, and know that if you've been hurt, yeah, I I think that's that's that's a reality.
- 17:53SPEAKER_01: Um so so learn, grow, find a place you can connect, and then have proper perspective on those things.
- 18:00SPEAKER_01: Um, and uh all get together a little bit better, I think, and we'll understand all that.
- 18:05SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah.
- 18:06SPEAKER_00: So so good.
- 18:07SPEAKER_00: In verse five, he does your favorite thing.
- 18:11SPEAKER_00: He's gonna grab two psalms.
- 18:12SPEAKER_00: Oh man.
- 18:13SPEAKER_01: Individual single.
- 18:14SPEAKER_00: He grabbed Psalm 2 and Psalm 110.
- 18:17SPEAKER_00: I'm just being together.
- 18:19SPEAKER_00: His he's establishing Jesus as we see this a lot if you study anything with Hebrews, king priest.
- 18:27SPEAKER_00: Yep.
- 18:27SPEAKER_00: He's the king priest.
- 18:28SPEAKER_01: The king priest.
- 18:29SPEAKER_00: Yep.
- 18:29SPEAKER_00: Is that essential to his to his argument here?
- 18:33SPEAKER_01: His argument.
- 18:34SPEAKER_01: Yep.
- 18:35SPEAKER_00: Anything there?
- 18:36SPEAKER_00: No, anything interesting?
- 18:37SPEAKER_01: Uh the the way I'm gonna teach this on Sunday, verses one through four, that's the job description for a priest.
- 18:43SPEAKER_01: Verses five and six.
- 18:45SPEAKER_01: Jesus has a resume that matches the job description.
- 18:49SPEAKER_01: Verses seven through, we hired him, seven through ten.
- 18:52SPEAKER_01: He went and he did a great job.
- 18:53SPEAKER_01: And the verse that you like is verse uh verse nine.
- 18:57SPEAKER_01: And having been made perfect, he became the source of eternal salvation for all who obey him.
- 19:02SPEAKER_01: He did such a great job, he became the eternal source of salvation for all who obey him.
- 19:06SPEAKER_01: That's really chapter five.
- 19:08SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 19:08SPEAKER_00: I think I love that putting yourself in the mind of of as best as we can, of, of this audience.
- 19:18SPEAKER_00: I think the eternal salvation would unlock a new thought for them.
- 19:22SPEAKER_00: Good point.
- 19:24SPEAKER_00: Being that the system that he's referring to was such a continuous thing.
- 19:30SPEAKER_00: And he makes that point later on.
- 19:32SPEAKER_00: He's like, hey, remember, you guys did this over and over and over again, and guess what?
- 19:36SPEAKER_00: Every year, still sacrifices had to be made.
- 19:39SPEAKER_00: They never showed up one year and was like, hey, we got nothing, we got nothing to to atone for this year.
- 19:44SPEAKER_00: That covenant didn't fix anything.
- 19:46SPEAKER_00: That never happened.
- 19:47SPEAKER_00: And then he makes the greater point later that this the whole idea of the priesthood God had in mind is so much beyond what this is, though this points to it.
- 19:57SPEAKER_00: I think he said earlier on, it's only a shadow, or maybe says that next week.
- 20:01SPEAKER_00: It's only a shadow of what was to come.
- 20:02SPEAKER_00: Yeah, that's not true.
- 20:03SPEAKER_00: And fulfilled in Jesus.
- 20:04SPEAKER_00: So I just think that that eternal thing of you're so used to this is this is this is etched into your way of life and way of worship, too.
- 20:14SPEAKER_00: And now he's saying there's like an eternal resolution to this now, and it's made in Jesus.
- 20:20SPEAKER_00: Yep.
- 20:21SPEAKER_00: I think that's a whole unlocking of of something pretty incredible.
- 20:24SPEAKER_01: Yep.
- 20:25SPEAKER_01: Hope they grabbed it.
- 20:26SPEAKER_01: Uh it's easier for us, I think, to hold on to because of the way we've held faith.
- 20:30SPEAKER_01: For them, yeah, I think you're right.
- 20:31SPEAKER_01: That's why he would have wrote this, because he doesn't want them to fall back into the system.
- 20:34SPEAKER_01: Yeah, because it was right there.
- 20:35SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 20:36SPEAKER_01: Right there.
- 20:37SPEAKER_01: So yeah, I I think that would have been a quit crucifying Christ again, which is what he's about to say again.
- 20:41SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 20:42SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 20:42SPEAKER_01: When he's about to get there.
- 20:43SPEAKER_01: So, so so simply enough, five builds builds the case for a high priest resume.
- 20:48SPEAKER_01: Jesus matches it, Jesus did it.
- 20:50SPEAKER_01: And then chapter five ends with uh, you're so dull, you need solid meat, but you're but you can only have milk.
- 20:57SPEAKER_00: These are the moments of scripture.
- 20:59SPEAKER_00: The older I get, the more I love.
- 21:00SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 21:01SPEAKER_00: He's making this point, and he stops himself and he says, you know what?
- 21:05SPEAKER_00: Let's just riff on this for a little while.
- 21:07SPEAKER_00: It's too lazy and dull to even get this.
- 21:11SPEAKER_00: But then he's gonna come back to it.
- 21:13SPEAKER_00: Like any good parent.
- 21:14SPEAKER_00: Let me tell you something harder.
- 21:16SPEAKER_00: That's what he does.
- 21:18SPEAKER_00: It's awesome.
- 21:18SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it's so human.
- 21:20SPEAKER_00: If you ever wonder, like, uh, is this can this be trusted?
- 21:24SPEAKER_00: Absolutely.
- 21:24SPEAKER_00: I mean, you see the humanity all over it.
- 21:27SPEAKER_01: Yeah, you should understand all this.
- 21:29SPEAKER_01: Why am I having to write this?
- 21:30SPEAKER_01: Okay, let me double down and tell you about Mochet.
- 21:32SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 21:33SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 21:33SPEAKER_01: Back to what I was saying.
- 21:34SPEAKER_01: Back to what I was saying.
- 21:35SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 21:35SPEAKER_01: Yep.
- 21:36SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 21:36SPEAKER_00: So nothing I'm guessing that you're going to go to too much in six.
- 21:41SPEAKER_00: Uh no, I'll have I have to talk about the warning.
- 21:44SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 21:44SPEAKER_01: So the week how to do it.
- 21:46SPEAKER_01: But to me, the warning gets right to everything you were just talking about, so you've kind of covered it.
- 21:49SPEAKER_01: So there's a there's a warning in there that um is really harsh about don't cruci you you you if you believe in Christ and then you walk away, he's not gonna die on a cross again.
- 22:00SPEAKER_01: And he died.
- 22:00SPEAKER_01: That's it.
- 22:01SPEAKER_01: So quit doing that.
- 22:02SPEAKER_01: And it sounds very final.
- 22:04SPEAKER_01: And I know that there are people that will listen to this that will interpret that and say, Yeah, if you believe in Christ and then you walk away from Christ, there's no coming back.
- 22:13SPEAKER_01: Um, you're dead to me.
- 22:15SPEAKER_01: Why I believe that that's hyperbole, this is my opinion, is because when you get to verse nine, so that warning is in four through eight.
- 22:26SPEAKER_01: When you get to verse nine, he says, Even though we speak in this way, beloved, we are confident of better things in your case.
- 22:32SPEAKER_01: So he he he has the most harsh words, but then he says, but not you guys.
- 22:37SPEAKER_01: Right?
- 22:38SPEAKER_01: It it's not you, it's me.
- 22:39SPEAKER_01: I'm just I was frustrated.
- 22:41SPEAKER_00: There's people out there, yeah, but not you.
- 22:43SPEAKER_01: But it's not you.
- 22:44SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 22:44SPEAKER_01: And then he then he ends chapter six, and it's very important.
- 22:48SPEAKER_01: I think that once again, these things aren't gonna matter to us.
- 22:51SPEAKER_01: We don't understand it, but the end of chapter six is super important because he talks about a point that's gonna be brought up in chapter seven, which is the oath.
- 23:01SPEAKER_01: In the covenant that God made or the agreement that God made with Abraham, he swore to it by himself.
- 23:11SPEAKER_01: Jesus is God, swore to it by himself.
- 23:15SPEAKER_01: So when you get into this idea of, you know, when we make a promise, we're only as good as our word, and our word is only as good as we are.
- 23:23SPEAKER_01: So at some point it falls apart.
- 23:24SPEAKER_01: When God swears by himself, should probably be pretty good.
- 23:27SPEAKER_00: You can take that one to the Because God is truth.
- 23:29SPEAKER_01: And so if God ends up being a liar, God is not God.
- 23:31SPEAKER_01: So that's not like the math doesn't math.
- 23:34SPEAKER_01: So he makes this comparison about um through the two unchangeable things that both were secured by God, but the one in Christ is better because it's Christ that did it versus through Abraham on the other side.
- 23:48SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 23:48SPEAKER_01: So so he brings out that understanding of an oath.
- 23:51SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and that and he's gonna pick it up later.
- 23:53SPEAKER_00: And the idea of covenant, old covenant versus new covenant.
- 23:56SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 23:56SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 23:56SPEAKER_00: He caught what does he use the word promise?
- 23:58SPEAKER_00: Yeah, promise and oath.
- 23:59SPEAKER_00: Yeah, promise and oath.
- 24:00SPEAKER_00: Yep.
- 24:01SPEAKER_00: Uh I don't have it on a pillow, but we definitely have 419 on a sign hanging on our wall.
- 24:07SPEAKER_00: We have this hope, a sure and steadfast anchor of the soul.
- 24:10SPEAKER_01: Anchor for our souls.
- 24:11SPEAKER_01: That's good.
- 24:12SPEAKER_01: Yeah, that'd be a lot on a pillow.
- 24:13SPEAKER_01: That'd be a giant pillow.
- 24:14SPEAKER_01: Yeah, that'd be too much for a robe, like on the back of a robe, like Rocky.
- 24:18SPEAKER_01: No?
- 24:19SPEAKER_00: I I don't hate it.
- 24:21SPEAKER_01: This is like a commercial break.
- 24:22SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 24:23SPEAKER_00: Uh, you don't want to talk about losing your salvation?
- 24:26SPEAKER_00: You don't want to have that debate.
- 24:27SPEAKER_00: We can.
- 24:28SPEAKER_00: I don't I don't think you can.
- 24:30SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 24:30SPEAKER_00: I don't want to.
- 24:31SPEAKER_00: I'm not prepared to have that conversation.
- 24:33SPEAKER_01: And we we recognize that you you can feel that way.
- 24:35SPEAKER_00: Well, I it could be said that that's where a lot of this comes from, is is that.
- 24:41SPEAKER_00: So and it's I mean you can't ignore that that conversation's out there.
- 24:45SPEAKER_01: Okay, it's semantics.
- 24:47SPEAKER_01: I I I am a free will guy, so I believe that you do have the ability to choose and you have the ability to walk away.
- 24:53SPEAKER_01: So I I misspoke.
- 24:54SPEAKER_01: Um, but so like I because I believe it's choice.
- 24:58SPEAKER_01: I believe you can absolutely choose to not believe and deny God and walk away.
- 25:04SPEAKER_01: Then there's those that believe there's the elect and they're in and they're in, and you can't ever lose it.
- 25:10SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 25:11SPEAKER_01: But if they saw somebody walk away, they would say they were never.
- 25:16SPEAKER_01: So it's semantics, yeah.
- 25:17SPEAKER_01: Right?
- 25:18SPEAKER_01: I mean, one way or the other.
- 25:19SPEAKER_01: So let's just agree to not understand and um I I think it's it's bull fan, and we're not gonna understand God on that.
- 25:28SPEAKER_01: So what I would say is don't walk away.
- 25:30SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 25:32SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 25:32SPEAKER_02: Just don't do it.
- 25:34SPEAKER_02: It's easy.
- 25:34SPEAKER_02: It's better.
- 25:35SPEAKER_02: Jesus is better.
- 25:36SPEAKER_02: Jesus is better.
- 25:37SPEAKER_00: Choose that.
- 25:37SPEAKER_00: Yeah, that's right.
- 25:38SPEAKER_00: Is that a weird little intermission break between his points about high priests to you?
- 25:44SPEAKER_00: Or does that does that help to inform seven at all?
- 25:50unknown: Yes.
- 25:50SPEAKER_00: Or his point?
- 25:51SPEAKER_01: Yeah, he's building on.
- 25:52SPEAKER_01: Oh, he's absolutely building.
- 25:53SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 25:54SPEAKER_01: Because he he's now established a priest, uh a high priest that Jesus is.
- 25:58SPEAKER_01: He's already kind of been trickling out the idea that Jesus is a high priest.
- 26:01SPEAKER_01: Now he just established Jesus as the high priest.
- 26:04SPEAKER_01: And if you're a Jewish person, you would say, okay.
- 26:09SPEAKER_01: Wait a minute.
- 26:10SPEAKER_01: He's from Judah.
- 26:12SPEAKER_01: He's not, we already said this.
- 26:13SPEAKER_00: Kings are from Judah, priests are from Levi.
- 26:15SPEAKER_01: That's right.
- 26:16SPEAKER_01: So he can't be a a priest.
- 26:18SPEAKER_01: Right?
- 26:19SPEAKER_01: So now he's got to solve that problem.
- 26:22SPEAKER_01: That, my friends, is chapter seven.
- 26:24SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 26:25SPEAKER_01: The one that I we put this thing on the board a year a year ago, and I have been um so excited about this one uh because it's just tough to understand.
- 26:39SPEAKER_02: So what do you want to talk about in chapter seven, bro?
- 26:44SPEAKER_02: Um well you know it's hard to look through a microphone, you know that?
- 26:49SPEAKER_02: I know.
- 26:49SPEAKER_00: But you I usually kind of do it.
- 26:51SPEAKER_01: And you put it where you want it so that it so that can be heard well.
- 26:53SPEAKER_01: So I got it.
- 26:54SPEAKER_00: Okay, that's good.
- 26:55SPEAKER_00: This started as an audio play.
- 26:57SPEAKER_01: So let's let's read verses one and two.
- 27:00SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 27:01SPEAKER_01: And um and this will this will give you the recap in the writer of Hebrews words from Genesis 14.
- 27:08SPEAKER_01: He says, This king Melchazedek of Salem, the priest of the most high God, met Abraham as he was returning from defeating the kings and blessed him.
- 27:21SPEAKER_01: And to him Abraham apportioned one-tenth of everything.
- 27:27SPEAKER_01: Then he goes into explaining all of the significance about Melchizedek, none of which is stated in Genesis.
- 27:36SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 27:37SPEAKER_02: So all of these are theological discernments.
- 27:44SPEAKER_02: I was I made a crazy face there.
- 27:46SPEAKER_01: Um or jumps uh we we would say by the Holy Spirit, based on the belief of the writer of Hebrews to make all of this assumption because he's going to say that Jesus is from Judah, so yeah, he wouldn't be born into the priesthood.
- 28:03SPEAKER_01: He is a priest because he's from the order of Melchizedek.
- 28:06SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 28:07SPEAKER_01: So he's gonna make that connection, but he's gotta explain Melchizedek first.
- 28:12SPEAKER_01: So we're gonna spend an entire chapter talking about Melchizedek or half a chapter.
- 28:18SPEAKER_00: So if you're thinking that this might be weird or random, it's it's not because the genealogy would have been such a huge matter for them in the in choosing the high priests, they weren't chosen.
- 28:33SPEAKER_00: I mean, God chose them, but from that order, from the genealogy, it would have it would have absolutely mattered to them.
- 28:39SPEAKER_00: And I think at the time, if you study that, what became time later on is just it got way more political than Rome had a say in who the high priest was.
- 28:49SPEAKER_00: If you go back to Jesus' trial and crucifixion, um, you have Caipus the high priest there, and there's a whole thing there, which I know the re Hebrews is not really talking about, but it I think it's interesting context to understand like what genealogy meant.
- 29:03SPEAKER_01: Yeah, so so for I was trying in my brain, I got stuck in Abraham's time.
- 29:08SPEAKER_01: You're talking about during this the time of this writer.
- 29:11SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 29:11SPEAKER_01: So the time of this writer, they would have they would have recognized he couldn't be, he had to be from he's from Judah, so he couldn't have been a priest.
- 29:18SPEAKER_01: The interesting thing for the for Genesis is Melchizedek shows up before there's even a priest.
- 29:25SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 29:25SPEAKER_01: So he stands in the story as a priest.
- 29:28SPEAKER_01: He does priestly things.
- 29:30SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 29:30SPEAKER_01: He blesses them.
- 29:32SPEAKER_01: Um, you know, uh so like in that little exchange of three verses, he has the name, King of Righteousness, King of Peace.
- 29:40SPEAKER_01: He blesses him, and then he also receives the offering.
- 29:43SPEAKER_01: So like in those few moments, the writer of Hebrews is probably scanning through scripture and goes, Well, there he is right there.
- 29:52SPEAKER_01: Now we kind of have to suspend our brain and realize that for them, that would have been they they I've already said it, they believe that that would have been God showing up.
- 30:03SPEAKER_01: For the writer of Hebrews, he's like, that's a Christophany.
- 30:06SPEAKER_01: Or God, same thing, um, showed up there, and now uh he's gonna do the work to connect.
- 30:11SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 30:12SPEAKER_01: So if you if you just situate in your brain that the writer of Hebrews believes that that that Melchizedek was God, then the rest of this makes sense.
- 30:26SPEAKER_01: Because because if you start reading it, he verses four through ten, he makes this awesome argument about uh about the superior or the lesser, which we talked about, and then about the offering.
- 30:39SPEAKER_01: That it wasn't even until the Levitical tribe that that tithe came into the picture.
- 30:46SPEAKER_01: And that's Abraham, Isaac, Jacob go into Egypt, Moses pops out, goes into the thing, creates the you know, all the stuff.
- 30:55SPEAKER_01: And um, and so then there was money that had to come into board to be able to pay for the temple or tabernacle and all the different stuff.
- 31:01SPEAKER_01: That's where the where the 10% came in.
- 31:03SPEAKER_01: That's a long time after the exchange with Abraham.
- 31:06SPEAKER_01: So the writer of Hebrews says Abraham gave a tenth of all he had to Melchazedec.
- 31:14SPEAKER_01: Inside of Abraham was the seed of Levi, who was many generations later.
- 31:20SPEAKER_01: So kinda, Levi paid a tithe to Melchazedek.
- 31:26SPEAKER_01: So that makes Melchizedek a better priest or a more superior priest than Levi.
- 31:31SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and if nothing else, established this order of priesthood went before all the others.
- 31:37SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 31:38SPEAKER_01: And that's that's all he's trying to do.
- 31:39SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 31:39SPEAKER_01: The arguments are they're beautifully laid out.
- 31:42SPEAKER_01: I don't know that they matter to us, but he's just going to great lengths to say that Jesus is superior, Jesus is greater.
- 31:47SPEAKER_00: So how does because I don't think he is explaining Melchizedek in a way that he has more insight on than anyone else in history, I guess.
- 31:55SPEAKER_00: Ever, yeah.
- 31:55SPEAKER_00: Um, which is curious.
- 31:57SPEAKER_00: I'd love to know where that came from.
- 31:59SPEAKER_00: Holy Spirit.
- 31:59SPEAKER_00: Yeah, absolutely.
- 32:00SPEAKER_00: But how does it his point is not to point to Melchizedek, but his point is to help us understand Jesus better.
- 32:06SPEAKER_00: Correct.
- 32:06SPEAKER_00: So how how does that help us understand Jesus?
- 32:10SPEAKER_01: He just he's well, I you're not gonna like my answer.
- 32:14SPEAKER_01: He just he did a work, he didn't do a workaround.
- 32:16SPEAKER_01: He explained, he explained how to understand Jesus as a high priest.
- 32:19SPEAKER_01: That he always was, that this was the plan all along, that Jesus didn't come through a broken system.
- 32:25SPEAKER_01: He came, he is the system.
- 32:27SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 32:27SPEAKER_01: So he was the one that's connected directly to God because he is God.
- 32:31SPEAKER_01: So I think that's probably the best way to look at it.
- 32:33SPEAKER_01: So they were looking at a high priest through the lens of the covenant through Moses, right?
- 32:37SPEAKER_01: And he's like, no, let me tell you about that.
- 32:40SPEAKER_01: God just showed up.
- 32:41SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 32:41SPEAKER_01: God just showed up.
- 32:42SPEAKER_01: Uh uh there's there's some phrases in here that I think are awesome.
- 32:47SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 32:47SPEAKER_01: Let's just read 11, uh let's just read verse 11 in chapter seven.
- 32:52SPEAKER_01: Now, if perfection had been attainable through the Levitical priesthood, which is which is just a great phrase, right?
- 32:58SPEAKER_01: So he just threw the whole law under the priesthood.
- 33:01SPEAKER_01: The thing you guys, you know, believed in.
- 33:03SPEAKER_01: He says, for the people received the law under this priesthood, what further need would there have been to speak of another priest arising according to the order of Melchizedek rather than one?
- 33:14SPEAKER_01: So what so if if the law was good, why would David, why would anybody talk about anything?
- 33:21SPEAKER_01: We're golden.
- 33:22SPEAKER_01: He's like, clearly there's a problem.
- 33:24SPEAKER_01: So then you get down to um verse, let's just go to 18.
- 33:28SPEAKER_01: There is on the one hand the abrogation, which means the setting aside of an earlier commandment because it was weak and ineffectual.
- 33:38SPEAKER_01: That's the law.
- 33:39SPEAKER_01: He says, for the law made nothing perfect.
- 33:42SPEAKER_01: There is, on the other hand, the introduction of a better hope through which we approach God.
- 33:48SPEAKER_01: So he's like, You've got the law.
- 33:49SPEAKER_01: So Jewish Christi Jewish believers in Christ, you've got the law, which never fixed anything, or you've got Jesus, which offers us true hope.
- 33:58SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and Paul in Paul would would talk about how the law actually just reveals our need in a greater way.
- 34:05SPEAKER_00: Like it it didn't solve anything, it it was a revelation of.
- 34:08SPEAKER_01: Yep.
- 34:09SPEAKER_01: Here I got I found it.
- 34:10SPEAKER_01: My favorite verse.
- 34:11SPEAKER_01: Verse 16.
- 34:13SPEAKER_01: One who has become priest, not through a legal requirement concerning physical descent, but through the power of an indestructible life.
- 34:22SPEAKER_01: So he's talking about Christ.
- 34:23SPEAKER_01: He didn't become it because he was uh because he just didn't die.
- 34:26SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 34:27SPEAKER_01: He couldn't die.
- 34:29SPEAKER_01: Probably gonna put my hope on that.
- 34:31SPEAKER_01: Should go with that one.
- 34:32SPEAKER_01: You know?
- 34:32SPEAKER_01: You should go with that one.
- 34:33SPEAKER_01: Was it Andy Stanley that used to say, um, if somebody can tell you that he's gonna die and how long it's gonna be, and then he then he's gonna rise, and then he does it, you should go with that guy.
- 34:43SPEAKER_01: Should go with that guy.
- 34:43SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 34:44SPEAKER_00: Um, let's get practical, man.
- 34:47SPEAKER_00: Because those are some beautiful, life-changing, amazing, powerful truths that that we should we should sit with and won't fully understand.
- 34:55SPEAKER_00: But the idea of um what what did yours say?
- 35:01SPEAKER_00: The mine says on seven nineteen.
- 35:06SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 35:08SPEAKER_00: The confidence of the better hope through which we draw near to God.
- 35:13SPEAKER_02: My whole book and I left my tab out.
- 35:15SPEAKER_00: The confidence of the whole what a better hope through which we draw near to God.
- 35:22SPEAKER_00: 19.
- 35:23SPEAKER_00: 719.
- 35:26SPEAKER_01: For the law made nothing perfect, there is on the one hand the introduction of a better hope through which we approach God.
- 35:32SPEAKER_00: Approach God, draw near to God.
- 35:34SPEAKER_00: Um do we live like people that that uh act like that?
- 35:39SPEAKER_02: And how how would that change if our heart understood that that drawing near to?
- 35:48SPEAKER_00: Yeah, um because many of us have this still live like there's this barrier here, or like the guilt of your sin and feeling like there is not this invitation that God says come near to me.
- 36:06SPEAKER_00: But you know, because of sin, it it kind of it skews our our thought on that.
- 36:13SPEAKER_01: I okay, so I've got a completely different thought on that.
- 36:16SPEAKER_01: And I don't know that it's right, Jeff.
- 36:17SPEAKER_01: I I think our modern society is the other side of that.
- 36:22SPEAKER_01: I think that we have we have a complete callousness for God.
- 36:26SPEAKER_01: Um, at least the first century Jewish person had an understanding of if you have the thought of the Holy of Holies going in there and just dying.
- 36:34SPEAKER_01: Now we create gods out of everything, right?
- 36:36SPEAKER_01: I mean, there there seems to be no appreciation.
- 36:39SPEAKER_01: Um, we look at grace as if it doesn't matter.
- 36:41SPEAKER_01: We there are so many people that I know that they become believers, but they're not necessarily, and I'm I don't want to be the judgmental guy, but it's reality that not interested in working on transformation in their lives, and it brings utter destruction into their lives.
- 36:57SPEAKER_01: So, I mean there's a there's a cost for all that stuff.
- 37:00SPEAKER_01: So I think what we miss is that the writer of this person is being encouraged to move into the Holy of Holies because Christ has made a way that's there.
- 37:09SPEAKER_01: I think we need to go, oh, there is a high priest that did this for us so that we, because we are a mess.
- 37:16SPEAKER_01: Oh, well, I mean, we are awesome.
- 37:18SPEAKER_01: Like we think we're amazing and we're incredible and we're all of those things.
- 37:22SPEAKER_01: We should probably check ourselves and realize that Christ had to do all of this so that we could be righteous, so that we could be there.
- 37:29SPEAKER_01: That's um, I do I do know that there are people that they get to a place to where they go, oh man, I am sinful and I am broken and I do not deserve this.
- 37:38SPEAKER_01: And that's true.
- 37:40SPEAKER_01: I I wish more of us could be there in that place than than not, because that's that's the ultimate truth.
- 37:46SPEAKER_01: And that's that's why Jesus had to do what he did here.
- 37:50SPEAKER_01: So maybe both and but I think our society feels pretty good about itself.
- 37:56SPEAKER_02: I don't know.
- 37:56SPEAKER_02: Am I crazy?
- 37:57SPEAKER_02: No.
- 37:59SPEAKER_02: I think it's all of it.
- 38:00SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 38:01SPEAKER_02: I agree with that.
- 38:02SPEAKER_00: I don't I don't I don't disagree with that.
- 38:04SPEAKER_01: Um To me, that's why I think they struggle with Hebrews.
- 38:08SPEAKER_01: What do you mean?
- 38:09SPEAKER_01: A priest?
- 38:10SPEAKER_01: A sacrificial system?
- 38:11SPEAKER_01: That doesn't make any sense.
- 38:12SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it seems very irrelevant to today to a non-Jewish person for sure.
- 38:19SPEAKER_01: Because we bought into the uh faith at no cost, right?
- 38:23SPEAKER_01: I mean, just uh believe and receive.
- 38:26SPEAKER_01: And and there's there's truth there.
- 38:28SPEAKER_01: There's truth there, but man, it it costs.
- 38:31SPEAKER_00: Well that yeah, that whole the whole philosophy of like whatever your truth is versus my truth versus you you do your thing, and there's no like there's not this universal truth that is true.
- 38:45SPEAKER_00: Um that's a whole other podcast probably.
- 38:48SPEAKER_01: That is a that is a whole lifetime.
- 38:50SPEAKER_00: But yeah, I see people too though that have this feeling, maybe we touched on it in Ecclesiastes that you've you might have these all these different thoughts on God and have kind of pulled the threads from every which way, but in your heart there is this longing of of a sense of like things just ugh, things aren't the way that they're supposed to be.
- 39:15SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 39:15SPEAKER_00: You know?
- 39:16SPEAKER_00: And then I think the r the result of that is then you try to make sense of it in your own way.
- 39:20SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 39:21SPEAKER_00: You know, and you you can come to all these different conclusions, which is no different than what people have always done.
- 39:27SPEAKER_01: And let and let's okay, back to what you asked me to do, and I blew it up for you.
- 39:31SPEAKER_01: Let's make it super practical.
- 39:32SPEAKER_01: The writer of Hebrews is saying, guys, the greatest gift that was ever given came, did all of these things for you.
- 39:40SPEAKER_01: Don't try to make it about yourself.
- 39:42SPEAKER_01: Don't, don't uh try to make it about works, righteousness.
- 39:46SPEAKER_01: He was the greatest gift of grace.
- 39:48SPEAKER_01: He was the high priest, he was the sacrifice.
- 39:50SPEAKER_01: He went into the actual tabernacle, holy of holies, and offered this for you.
- 39:55SPEAKER_01: It speaks of how much God truly loves us and the links to which God was willing to go to rescue us, despite us.
- 40:04SPEAKER_01: You know, I mean, how ignorant we can be.
- 40:06SPEAKER_01: And so he's holding the attention of that first century Jewish person that that believes in Jesus, but really has affinity for the system that they grew up in, and they want to go back to the sacrifices.
- 40:18SPEAKER_01: They want to go back to the system that they found so much.
- 40:20SPEAKER_01: And he's like, Man, Jesus died for you.
- 40:24SPEAKER_01: Don't walk away from the greatest sacrifice that has given you the ability to be right, that has given you the ability to have your soul restored.
- 40:36SPEAKER_01: Don't lose that.
- 40:37SPEAKER_01: Like, don't abandon that for something that is a foreshadowing of what you just discovered.
- 40:43SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 40:44SPEAKER_01: And they were living in that time.
- 40:46SPEAKER_01: I mean, that's the crazy thing, is this book was written right there in that window.
- 40:50SPEAKER_01: So that context he wrote to, it was real-time, purposeful understanding of what had just happened.
- 40:57SPEAKER_01: So I think, you know, all the Jesus is greater, all of those different things that we did, those are to help us understand something that we'll never be able to fully put our mind into.
- 41:06SPEAKER_01: But but that's it.
- 41:08SPEAKER_01: That God loved us that much that all of these pieces scripturally, the the things you have to do to make them reconcile, the writer of Hebrews is doing that for us.
- 41:17SPEAKER_01: But man, you just need to know that God loved you.
- 41:19SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 41:19SPEAKER_01: And he did it.
- 41:20SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 41:21SPEAKER_01: He did it.
- 41:22SPEAKER_01: He was the high priest from a different order because he's God, right?
- 41:26SPEAKER_01: God doesn't need to have a birthright.
- 41:29SPEAKER_01: Um, he's God.
- 41:30SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 41:30SPEAKER_01: And he came in.
- 41:31SPEAKER_00: And he tells you if the priesthood changed, then guess what?
- 41:34SPEAKER_00: It all changes.
- 41:35SPEAKER_00: Yeah, that's right.
- 41:36SPEAKER_00: And if he who established it wants to change it, he can do so.
- 41:38SPEAKER_00: And he did because he fixed it.
- 41:40SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 41:41SPEAKER_01: He fixed it.
- 41:41SPEAKER_01: And then the invitation is there for us to believe.
- 41:44SPEAKER_00: That's good.
- 41:45SPEAKER_00: Um, last, I want to read this and then we'll close on this thought because I I think it it it takes that next step then, too, because we think, yeah, Jesus died for me.
- 41:56SPEAKER_00: 25 tells us he lives forever to intercede with God on their behalf or on our behalf.
- 42:03SPEAKER_00: So what does that mean that got that Jesus is interceding for us right now?
- 42:11SPEAKER_02: You tell me, buddy.
- 42:14SPEAKER_02: Well, let's go back to the ignorant and wayward.
- 42:16SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 42:17SPEAKER_00: I can relate to that.
- 42:19SPEAKER_01: I can too.
- 42:20SPEAKER_01: I'm I'm and so I'm glad I've got somebody, the one who is representing me to God, and the one that walked in our shoes that said, yeah, he's ignorant and wayward.
- 42:33SPEAKER_01: We love that guy, and and his heart is his heart is right.
- 42:39SPEAKER_01: That's that's it.
- 42:40SPEAKER_01: That's what we that's man.
- 42:43SPEAKER_01: And and and he's mine.
- 42:46SPEAKER_01: So he's in.
- 42:47SPEAKER_01: That's that's I mean, let's get down to it.
- 42:49SPEAKER_01: That's what that's what it's all about.
- 42:51SPEAKER_01: So ignorant, wayward, struggle, all the things.
- 42:54SPEAKER_01: Um, working through transformation, trying to get to that place.
- 42:58SPEAKER_01: The other side of this is is we also carry this message.
- 43:02SPEAKER_01: It's not just about us sorting it out for our own personal being.
- 43:04SPEAKER_01: That's huge.
- 43:06SPEAKER_01: But then to champion this message and carry it on to the next generation.
- 43:09SPEAKER_01: I think of our kids, I think of the church, I think of discipleship, all the things that we're doing.
- 43:13SPEAKER_01: Um, the way that we model, we could we allow that this to change and transform us.
- 43:20SPEAKER_01: That's good.
- 43:20SPEAKER_01: So high priest forever.
- 43:21SPEAKER_00: That's good.
- 43:22SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 43:22SPEAKER_00: I it uh it continues, it's the theological truth, I think, to what a lot of our message would be.
- 43:30SPEAKER_00: We say, hey, you know, Jesus loved you, he sacrificed for you, he died, he rose again.
- 43:35SPEAKER_00: And we say we might say something like, Hey, he's with, you know, he's with you.
- 43:40SPEAKER_00: This is that theological next uh understanding of this is how he's with you.
- 43:46SPEAKER_00: He's actually alive.
- 43:49SPEAKER_00: He didn't just die for you a long time ago and that was it.
- 43:52SPEAKER_00: He actually is alive, lives forever, and is forever interceding for you.
- 43:57SPEAKER_00: I think that's a we don't talk or think about that as much as the sacrifice, and then now the result of a really amazing thought that I think can reshape how we understand Jesus.
- 44:12SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 44:13SPEAKER_01: The image that we're given is he's seated at the right hand of the Father, he's interceding for us.
- 44:18SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 44:19SPEAKER_01: So I whether that's exactly what it is, remember when prophetic is given to us, it's given to us in terms that we can understand so that we can try and reconcile it.
- 44:31SPEAKER_01: I maybe there's a literal throne, and maybe Jesus is right there, and maybe that's how that's happening.
- 44:36SPEAKER_01: I I don't know.
- 44:37SPEAKER_01: What I do know is that there is an intercession or there's somebody that's fighting on our behalf.
- 44:44SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 44:45SPEAKER_01: That's what that's the crux of that whole understanding.
- 44:49SPEAKER_01: And um, and once again, he's the one that said he's gonna die.
- 44:54SPEAKER_01: He did, and he came back.
- 44:56SPEAKER_01: Called a shot.
- 44:58SPEAKER_01: Should probably go with that one.
- 44:59SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 45:00SPEAKER_01: Better.
- 45:01SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 45:02SPEAKER_01: Pretty pretty fun, it's a lot.
- 45:04SPEAKER_01: Like we covered all kind of stuff.
- 45:06SPEAKER_01: And maybe nothing at all, but at the same time.
- 45:10SPEAKER_01: That's what we do here.
- 45:11SPEAKER_01: That's what we do here.
- 45:12SPEAKER_01: And there was like a commercial break somewhere in the middle, so you guys will never see that.
- 45:19SPEAKER_00: That's right.
