- 0:00Back with Gino one final segment, then we'll visit with Nik and Mule.
- 0:03The Huskies are in Austin, Texas this weekend. Take on a long Horns
- 0:09coached by Vic Shaeffer. Pregame at two point thirty. Broadcast begins a game
- 0:12broadcast at three with Deb Fisk and myself here around the network. Text is
- 0:16another formidable foe, obviously with Vic Shaeffer. You know, it starts with
- 0:20defense on their end. They force almost twenty five turnovers per game. Rory
- 0:25Harmon back in the lineup twenty five steals on the season, but again consistently
- 0:30big g know four players at six or four, led by Taylor Jones.
- 0:34They don't shoot a lot of threes, but you know, when you're averaging
- 0:36fifty two points of the paint, I guess you don't really need to make
- 0:39that in many threes. No, No, you're right, you don't.
- 0:45And they are. They are traditionally based, you know, defensive, based
- 0:51on their defense more so than anything. And they get their offense off their
- 0:55defense. You know, that's where it all comes from. Their transition basket
- 1:00come from how much they turn you over. I thought one of the reasons
- 1:04we played so well, and one last year had a lot to do with
- 1:10how well we handled their pressure. And now you know how we were able
- 1:15to negate a lot of their a lot of their transition game. And and
- 1:25you know, again Dorker broke her thumb, you know, early in the
- 1:30game and played the entire game with it, and I thought her and Elijah
- 1:36matched up really really well with their two big guys. And then as he
- 1:41had thirty two points, you know, because we went to her a lot
- 1:45down the stretch and she handled the ball for us, she broke the press
- 1:51for us. But they're a hard team to play, and they're especially a
- 1:56hard team to play down there in that environment, against that pressure. And
- 2:00again we're going to be you know, we're going to be faced with some
- 2:06some physicality and some athletic ability and quickness and and disruptive stuff that they're trying
- 2:13to do. And and the one thing I want to see come out of
- 2:15this is you know, players that that we have that keep that we keep
- 2:20our poise and keep our composure and not get effected by you know, the
- 2:24game, the crowds, everything that goes with it. And that's going to
- 2:30be a big that's going to be a big issue for us, you know,
- 2:36can we be can we be poised, can we be composed? Can
- 2:39we handle all the things that they're going to throw at us? And that's
- 2:49that's a big question mark. Then Wednesday night, it is a reunion of
- 2:53the Mule family. Not only does a younger sister, Hanna play for ball
- 2:58State, but a pair Sneaka's parents are coming to see the game. But
- 3:01this is how I heard how this game came about. I guess you kind
- 3:06of offered him the head coach for ball State because I knew they were radio
- 3:08play by play guy Joel Goodett who's now in Boston doing stuff. But he
- 3:13told me that the coach asked what does he get out of it? And
- 3:15apparently was dinner at the Cafe Aura with coach hor I don't know if that's
- 3:23true or not, but yeah, well their their former eight d that was
- 3:30there, Beth right, Yeah, was was here for a few years and
- 3:35now she's at Iowa. So yeah, that's kind of how it came came
- 3:40about. And it'll be interesting. Uh, it'll be interesting to see Nick
- 3:47and her sister, uh, and especially have her mom and her dad be
- 3:54here in the stands and It'll be the first time they've you know, they've
- 3:57ever been here and ever watched their play here in person. So we thought
- 4:02it would be a great thing. We thought it would be an amazing,
- 4:08you know, reunion. You know, what are the chances that two kids
- 4:13from Croatia go to America and end up playing against each other at Gamble Pavilion
- 4:18with their parents in the stands. I mean, it's a it's just such
- 4:21a great feel good story and I'm glad we were able to put it together.
- 4:26Dinner or no dinner at all? Okay, is Nicko more like her
- 4:30dad or mom like her dad? Her mom is very quiet, very reserved,
- 4:40very understated, and her dad he's none of that. All right,
- 4:48let's leave on a high note. Last night it was announced that your former
- 4:53player maya more and this is going to become commonplace sooner than later, that
- 4:57more Yukon players are going to be doing this. Elected in Little Women's Basketball
- 5:00Hall of Fame. You know, Springfield's coming for her, for Sue,
- 5:03for Diana down the road. But it's just the first of many, do
- 5:08you know that is going to be head in this place. There's gonna be
- 5:10a lot of numbers that are suddenly going to be retired up in those rafters
- 5:13at Campbell Pavilion. But Maya, we know her story. Incredible young lady,
- 5:17tremendous honor. Yeah, I don't think it's a I don't think it's
- 5:23a surprise to anybody. Obviously, we have, you know, tremendous group
- 5:33of individuals that are played here. Certainly no one has had more of an
- 5:43impact than than Maya has had here on and off the court. It turns
- 5:47out right, and at the w NBA level, at the Olympic level,
- 5:55you name it. So it's it's it's it's a shame that it's happened this
- 6:03early because I think her basketball career ended way sooner than you know, I
- 6:10would have liked to have seen it end, because she had so much more
- 6:12to give. But it ended on her terms, the way she wanted it
- 6:15to end. And this is just the first of some of the accolades that
- 6:23are going to be coming her way. And I couldn't be couldn't be happier,
- 6:28and couldn't be proud of you know, the one thing that I remember
- 6:30about Maya, forget the points, forget the rebounds, just her relentlessness for
- 6:35four years to get after it. Could you imagine her with the two thousand
- 6:40and two team and how relentless they were just put that together. I mean,
- 6:45you know how tough those those fi were. Yeah, yeah, you
- 6:53know if she walked in the gym today, she in three days she'd be
- 6:56in our starting lineup. So I understand exactly what what you're saying. Well,
- 7:01you know, the group that she played with wasn't too bad either.
- 7:03All they did was when seventy went bro right, No, they weren't.
- 7:08Geno is always thank you. We'll talk to you before the game Sunday in
- 7:11Texas. All right, thanks Bob Gene where I'm but with us Sunday you
