- 0:00You're listening to Beyond the Sermon, the podcast the First
- 0:03Methodist Church in Collingswood, NJ.
- 0:05On our podcast, the goal is not just to share our sermons, but
- 0:08to go beyond the sermon and talk about what we're learning and
- 0:11what God is doing in US and in our community.
- 0:14The conversation you're about to join was inspired by our Spring
- 0:17Mixtape 2025 non series sermon series.
- 0:21Rather than a series, this will be a collection of sermons based
- 0:24on what God is leading us to preach on this spring.
- 0:27You can find out more information about our church at
- 0:29fumccollingswood.org. Thanks for joining us for this
- 0:32conversation. So Jeremy, in your message
- 0:37yesterday, in the second service anyway, you went the route of
- 0:42looking at different mediums that have been used to store
- 0:49music over the years and the decades.
- 0:52You know, going back to, you know, all the way to the iPod
- 0:56and CDs and then even further back, you know, through all the
- 1:01things back to photographs and stuff.
- 1:02But in the first service, you, you showed them a clip of a
- 1:08video that you created with AI. And it got me thinking, what's
- 1:16the wildest thing you've seen AI create?
- 1:22I mean, some of the videos because you can ask it multiple
- 1:27times with a similar prompt until you get one that has
- 1:31minimal to no giveaways that it's AI and then stitch that
- 1:36together with other videos. And so I think that's more
- 1:41terrifying because nerds will be nerds.
- 1:46And the right now there are certain barriers and
- 1:50restrictions on what it can be used for.
- 1:53Like you can't put in like a proper noun and say a specific
- 1:56person and have them do whatever you want in the video.
- 2:00But people have ways. Just a yeah, it's a matter of
- 2:05time before people work their way around that's.
- 2:07Just a restriction on Google's and from the user interface.
- 2:10It's not. Yeah, it's not.
- 2:12Technology, it's not limited. Yeah, yeah, AI could could do
- 2:16it. They're just telling it not to
- 2:17do that. So yeah, I think it's getting to
- 2:20a place. I mean, you can find like many
- 2:22movies of like aliens taking over the world and all this kind
- 2:26of stuff and interviews of people and fake influencers and
- 2:30like, you can recreate a whole YouTube channel with AI and
- 2:34people would think that it's real people doing real stuff.
- 2:37Yeah. So it's, it's, I think every
- 2:39within the next few years, everything you see digitally
- 2:44should be more questionable than ever.
- 2:47Like like not being able to trust anything you see video
- 2:50wise, Yeah. Yeah, which is crazy because up
- 2:56to this point that's kind of been like, oh, if you've got it
- 2:59on video, it's indisputable fact.
- 3:03Yeah, yeah. And I mean, there was, there was
- 3:06even within 3-4 years ago when AI tried to make videos, it was
- 3:09all very like it almost looked like abstract are being used as
- 3:14stop motion. It wasn't.
- 3:16And now we're getting AK made-up people from Mexico like I showed
- 3:20yesterday with great hair fades, like the hair stylist online,
- 3:26like you. Yeah, to have AK resolution of a
- 3:29person that doesn't exist within two minutes.
- 3:32Like I literally typed it out and within two minutes I had it
- 3:35and I'm not. And it was free.
- 3:37It's not like the most premium available thing in the world.
- 3:40It's not restricted to whatever people like a random person
- 3:43just. But it's funny how they're like,
- 3:46at this point anyway, there are still kind of like, tells, Yeah,
- 3:50Because like, as soon as I looked, I was like, this isn't
- 3:52real like. Yeah, so, so in the video, well,
- 3:56it was too high quality for anyone I know in Mexico to take
- 3:58a video of the first one. But he in the video, basically
- 4:03the guy greets the church. Like there's a guy standing
- 4:06outside of a church in Mexico and he says, hello, First
- 4:09Methodist Church, Collingswood and my brother Jeremy, blessings
- 4:14to all, or something like that. And he at first is holding his
- 4:18cell phone because in the prompt I told it to have him record it
- 4:22with a phone. And I don't know if it took that
- 4:25as recording with the phone or recording while holding a Yeah,
- 4:29yeah, yeah. So like at first he's holding
- 4:32like a selfie the the fake camera, the imaginary camera
- 4:36while holding a cell phone. And then both hands go down.
- 4:40So he's no longer holding the camera that's recording.
- 4:43He lifts up both hands to say hi to me with no phone in his hand.
- 4:47And then when he goes to walk away, he has the phone again in
- 4:50his hand. So they're those are the the few
- 4:53towels. But if I just kept doing the
- 4:56prompt and and I got rid of cell phone and it like sure, it's
- 5:00yeah, baffling. You you said how your
- 5:04grandfather would see stuff like that and always respond with all
- 5:08what will they think of next? Oh yeah.
- 5:11Where do you think technology's going?
- 5:13You don't want to know that answer, Scott.
- 5:15You don't honestly want to know that answer.
- 5:18If anyone's interested where AI is proposed to be going in the
- 5:22next 10 to 25 years, talk to me outside of the podcast, all
- 5:26right? But too big for the podcast.
- 5:28It's it's essentially like world domination that's like taking
- 5:35out to the point where we just similar to like the new the past
- 5:382 Mission Impossible movies where like if it is not properly
- 5:41restrained, we won't be able to be connected through the
- 5:46Internet because otherwise it will like.
- 5:48Manipulate everything. Everything, yeah.
- 5:52There you go. Come here for the Optimist
- 5:54project. And for, like, for a lot of
- 5:57people, the more they like, study and especially people in
- 6:00technology that should get it, they're getting more and more
- 6:03scared and want governments to put more and more restrictions
- 6:05on it. I have Jesus, and I know that
- 6:08the end is a good thing overall. Do we need to get the people
- 6:12living here now to know him before that time comes?
- 6:14Yeah. So there's more of an urgency,
- 6:17but it's like, I don't care how God ends the world.
- 6:20Like I know what happens after, right?
- 6:23Fair. Enough, Fair enough.
- 6:26Well, all that was like the lead into your sermon, which had to
- 6:31do a lot about faith and all that kind of stuff.
- 6:36Where where did your sermon? Like we know that we read in the
- 6:42service. We read Hebrews Chapter 9 verses
- 6:461 to 10. But you you mentioned at some
- 6:50point like maybe it was in the first or I was.
- 6:52In the first. That you saw some people kind of
- 6:54like the light bulb coming on of like what you were doing.
- 6:59So tell me, what were you doing with your sermon this week?
- 7:04You're very experimental. Not as a linear sermon this
- 7:08week. That's a great question, this
- 7:10guy. You can just AI me asking that
- 7:13one. Yeah, I would say it was Larry
- 7:17Gibbons and Carrie. And I think there's one more in
- 7:22the first service and then Dick Escher in the second service
- 7:25like. No, he was in the first service.
- 7:28Too. Yeah.
- 7:28So those three, I can see where they were sitting.
- 7:30Those are the ones that like within probably like 5 minutes
- 7:35of my sermon after I got past talking about my grandfather,
- 7:39we're very aware of what I was doing so long time ago.
- 7:43I desired to after rereading Hebrews and especially the end
- 7:48of Hebrews, I was like this preaches.
- 7:51Like there's the what what do you do?
- 7:55Like, in addition to this, because 9 through 13 just
- 8:01preaches on its own merit, and especially when you read it more
- 8:04in like a new Living translation where it's a little more modern
- 8:08language, it feels more like just a sermon.
- 8:13And so I was like, I would love one day to just memorize 9
- 8:17through 13 and be able to like, do that in a way that is like
- 8:25engaging in fluid. That is not what you witnessed
- 8:27yesterday, obviously, but that that was just like in my head
- 8:32for the past few years. And I never thought that there
- 8:34was an appropriate time to do that.
- 8:36And as I was preparing for these past three sermons, I felt like
- 8:41God was nudging me into that direction, or at least into
- 8:44those chapters. I didn't know what it would
- 8:47exactly look like, especially after all The Dirty looks I got
- 8:50from people for saying my original idea.
- 8:53And so as I was going through the text, I was trying to add
- 8:57stuff to connect it more to nowadays, but also adjust the
- 9:03flow and direction of things. So it's a little bit more, has a
- 9:09little bit more of a flow of thought and then kind of re
- 9:14including things for my example to try and help it progress and
- 9:20then utilizing towards the end scriptures as like prayer and as
- 9:26the benediction. But that's kind of where because
- 9:31I know nobody read Romans 6 through 8.
- 9:34And so I was like, instead of assigning homework, I will just
- 9:38provide you the gist of nine through 13.
- 9:42So not homework, but here's your challenge then right to to
- 9:45listen to Jeremy's sermon as you're reading in those chapters
- 9:50of Hebrews and, and see how it all flows together and.
- 9:54And it wasn't as reading through, it wasn't as like
- 9:59modern ceremony as I. Thought yeah.
- 10:02Because there are. I mean, there's so much in
- 10:05there. There's so much in there.
- 10:07Well, and I think that's the biggest thing, right is like, we
- 10:09would never put that much content with that many rabbit
- 10:13trails and so into one. That's where I I ended up
- 10:17cutting out even just like second halves of verses that
- 10:22would lead people very far off of the main, yeah, direction
- 10:26that the text is going. And so that's where I tried to
- 10:30it wasn't to avoid certain phrasings or parts of Scripture,
- 10:35but it was to help try and keep the flow of thought as best as
- 10:40possible. Before people were like, wait,
- 10:41did he just say this and then I need to go back and yeah.
- 10:45No, and and and in it you you talked a lot about faith because
- 10:50Hebrews talks about. Faith out of that chapter, I
- 10:55gave a top three when they're so I had the one idea and I was
- 10:59like, people hate participating from the pews.
- 11:03So I'm I'm not going to try and get like a lot of participation
- 11:08because I had this idea was like, what if every time I
- 11:10pointed at them, they said faith and then we just go through all
- 11:14the examples. I think that's Chapter 11 by 12,
- 11:18faith by faith. And then and then I was going to
- 11:21be like, look, normally people taper off and it gets quieter
- 11:24and quieter. Instead we're going to start at
- 11:26a whisper and then we get louder outer.
- 11:28But I'm like, they're never going to do that.
- 11:31So. Maybe at a youth camp?
- 11:33Yeah, maybe youth camp. Yeah, after we give them
- 11:36monsters. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 11:37But he talked about how our faith is integrally connected to
- 11:44the sacrifice that Jesus made on the cross, right?
- 11:49And how we are called to live out of that victory that that
- 11:58Jesus won. But the question that came up
- 12:01for me was where does that faith come from?
- 12:06Is that can we build faith in ourselves?
- 12:12How does that good layout energism?
- 12:16So I think like there's a degree in which you can gain knowledge
- 12:21of God, but having more knowledge of him that may like
- 12:26confirm certain things like historically doesn't necessarily
- 12:33build faith. It can, but it's not the the
- 12:36same as building faith. And so I think in scripture,
- 12:40like Paul prays for more faith from God.
- 12:44And so it's something that like and I think how enough is in
- 12:49Hebrews or something else I was reading recently where it talks
- 12:51about Jesus giving us faith like the oh, Hebrews, right, the
- 12:59initiator and perfector of our faith.
- 13:01But that's not or. Author and Perfector is 1.
- 13:04Translation Yeah, the Pioneer is 1 the.
- 13:08Pioneer And so it's like it's not just us trying to squeeze
- 13:14out tensing up and squeezing out a mustard seed of faith, right,
- 13:18But like going to God. And that's, that's where I think
- 13:22there's like a, a hurdle for some people where it's like, I
- 13:26don't know how to believe more, but you're also not going to
- 13:30God, asking him for stronger faith.
- 13:33And so it, it becomes like this hurdle, this roadblock.
- 13:40And if you sincerely desire. And that's why like I tried to
- 13:43emphasize like those that sincerely seek him because a lot
- 13:47of people seek him. But then they're really going
- 13:51like, I want you to confirm what I already believe, or I want you
- 13:55to give me this, this, this, and this, and then I'll follow your
- 13:59line of rules. But like sincerely seeking Him
- 14:02for who He is instead of who we want Him to be or whatever.
- 14:07I think that's key to also growing our faith because then
- 14:10we would desire more faith. We would desire to know His
- 14:14will. We would desire to do His will
- 14:17right. Yeah, yeah, because I think we
- 14:20often hear that verse about Jesus being the author and
- 14:23perfector of our faith. And think of it in terms of
- 14:26like, he's the author and perfector of our Christian
- 14:30faith, right? Like he's the one who built the
- 14:32system, but that's not really what it's saying, right?
- 14:36It's he's the one who actually generates faith, bestows faith,
- 14:42gifts faith, however you want to think about that transferral.
- 14:47He's the one who gives the faith.
- 14:49It's it's even a gift from God and his pervenient grace that we
- 14:55can even respond in faith to his offer of.
- 15:00Grace and that's that's the thing, right?
- 15:02Sincerely seeking desert, like all of this stuff, because when
- 15:06people, if you just take the one or two verses and it's like
- 15:10Jesus, all that kind of stuff, people are like, oh, so see, you
- 15:14can't believe on your own. You can't have faith on your
- 15:16own. God chooses who has faith and
- 15:19who believes. So like, because God's giving it
- 15:22and so God's giving it to those that he wants to be saved.
- 15:27And that just doesn't work within full context of
- 15:29Scripture. But we can't just sit back
- 15:31passively and. That's what that's what people.
- 15:34Say, I know, I know. Absolutely, absolutely.
- 15:38The other thing that kind of stood out to me the second time
- 15:43hearing it through. Second time was way better.
- 15:48That's true and. Not, but not because of the not
- 15:52totally because of the example at the beginning.
- 15:54I was so discontent with the first serves, not with how with
- 16:01how the sermon went in first service.
- 16:03And I was like, God, just like, have your spirit speak or do or
- 16:09whatever. Let my iPad die and just take
- 16:11over. Like, I, yeah.
- 16:14And so there were like paragraphs that like, as I got
- 16:18to them, I just felt like, I was like, just skip that.
- 16:21Here you go. And then I just said stuff.
- 16:23I did not prepare whatsoever. And then I was like, OK, where
- 16:26do I pick back up? And then finding that.
- 16:29And so there was like, I was like.
- 16:30That one buffering moment, yeah. There was like, yeah, at the
- 16:33end, they're completely different ending, not completely
- 16:36different, but way more succinct and like connected.
- 16:39And so there was three parts within the second service where
- 16:43I just didn't have it prepared. And God, just provide.
- 16:46It's not that I didn't have something prepared, I just
- 16:48didn't have that specific phrasing or paragraph or
- 16:52whatever. And so I know that he used those
- 16:56because they weren't me. But yes, sorry, second service.
- 16:59Yeah, yeah. But at the end there of that
- 17:02second service sermon, you brought it back to your
- 17:07grandfather saying of what will they think of next?
- 17:10And kind of like how your point was like Jesus was kind of gods,
- 17:17what will he think of next or like.
- 17:20Oh, I messed that up then, if that's what you thought.
- 17:23It kind of came across like Jesus was Plan B, like the
- 17:28evolution of the plan, and I don't think that's what you were
- 17:32intending to communicate. I say, yeah, I was thinking more
- 17:38of like, yeah, now there's got to be a better way.
- 17:41And then that's Jesus. That's what it was.
- 17:43Yeah, there's got to be a better way that Jesus.
- 17:45And the world's always trying to find a better way for
- 17:47everything, and it never satisfies better way Jesus.
- 17:51And then what will they think of next is how God makes us holy
- 17:57through Jesus Christ. And so it wasn't a like
- 18:00afterthought. It was always part of the plan,
- 18:03but like we couldn't be made or made.
- 18:07I forget the exact phrasing. Perfect or I know it's like made
- 18:09holy and then something else made perfected in Christ without
- 18:12Jesus Christ. So like it was that's what was
- 18:15next. It was just thought of prior.
- 18:19Yeah. Or always.
- 18:21Always, which would. Be prior, but like, yeah, so it
- 18:24wasn't like, oh, what now? OK, Jesus died and resurrected
- 18:29and God's like, huh, what should we do next?
- 18:32Yeah, or. But you're right, the the
- 18:34phrasing can get you to a different conclusion.
- 18:37Yeah, yeah. So I just wanted to give you a
- 18:38chance to clarify that because we see all through Hebrews,
- 18:42right? Like if we were to go back and
- 18:44read the whole book, you know, he's laying the case that or the
- 18:49author is laying the case that all those steps before the law
- 18:56and the sacrifices and all of that wasn't like a a first
- 19:00attempt that failed, but that it was preparing the way like that.
- 19:04There was a reason that Jesus didn't just show up 5 minutes
- 19:09after the fall, right? Like we had to get to a point
- 19:14where people saw their sin and and they saw their need for a
- 19:21savior and they saw that all the things that we can do in and of
- 19:26ourselves will never accomplish what we need to.
- 19:32So then Christ comes right and and as God and human, he bridges
- 19:41the gap. He makes the once and for all
- 19:44sacrifice that not only fulfilled all the previous
- 19:48sacrifices but paved a way for a new kind of humanity.
- 19:55Anything else in reflection that that you kind of wish you had
- 20:01another chance to say differently or?
- 20:05I wish I was better at memorizing scripture because
- 20:08yeah, that would have helped. Like if I because that was
- 20:12always a goal of like, to know, just know that script and still
- 20:15a goal to know that section of Scripture so intimately and so
- 20:19well. Because then I feel like I would
- 20:23have been less beholden to looking down essentially.
- 20:27And I could have been more focused on like intonation and
- 20:31how to express, yeah, those parts of Scripture, which, I
- 20:35mean, I've been listening to all those chapters like every day
- 20:39for the past three or four weeks.
- 20:42And still even that is. That the primary way you learn
- 20:45scripture. How I learn I don't like I I I
- 20:51don't know of what method of learning I am.
- 20:56I just know when I'm interested and passionate about something
- 20:59it usually sticks better. But even then, I'm good with
- 21:03Nuggets. Not like chapters and chapters
- 21:06of we're like, I can tell you the general flow of what happens
- 21:10in all those chapters and themes and all that kind of stuff.
- 21:13But to like word for word, yeah. When we were working with as
- 21:21missionaries and we were working with pastors in biblical
- 21:25reality. So, you know, we're talking
- 21:27primarily working with pastors who have limited literacy, their
- 21:33people even more limited. And so one of the tools we were
- 21:37using was this oral method of, of studying Scripture, which
- 21:41means an oral method of learning Scripture.
- 21:44We found through the training we participated in, it wasn't
- 21:47something we came up with, but they taught us that the most
- 21:51effective way to learn a passage is to read it aloud, close the
- 21:59book and say back as much as you can remember, and then go back
- 22:08and read it aloud again. Because there's something in
- 22:11reading it with your eyes, saying it with your mouth,
- 22:15hearing it with your ears that uses like so many different
- 22:21parts of your brain rather. Because like for me, the way I
- 22:26would normally try to learn a passage of scripture is I would
- 22:28read it silently and then try to say it.
- 22:33You know, that's kind of seems to be like the basic.
- 22:37But even if you're trying to listen to it and then say it
- 22:41like you're still only using one sense at a time.
- 22:46So that might be something for you as you.
- 22:49And for the listeners continue because it's so important to
- 22:53write what talks about from that section of as a Jeremiah 31 of
- 22:58they will have my laws on their hearts and minds.
- 23:00And I think it's one of those things.
- 23:02And last week we talked about meditating on it because the
- 23:06because the person in Romans 7 loved the law of God so much.
- 23:11And it's one of those things where when you're in times of
- 23:14need for yourself or when you're with someone else and you want
- 23:17to provide scripture to provide truth into the situation and
- 23:21then comfort that instead of Googling, oh, nice verse that
- 23:25makes you feel better, Bible on Google.
- 23:27And then seeing whatever comes up, you'd actually be able to
- 23:30like provide that. So by going through some of the
- 23:33verses that have given you so much comfort or direction or
- 23:37truth that you needed and trying to use this method so that at a
- 23:41moment's notice, you can share the gist of it at least as
- 23:45you're continuing to memorize it is extremely beneficial for you
- 23:49and those around you. And in that process, you
- 23:54yourself are formed then by those passages and by that
- 23:57Scripture, as it's not just something we can reference on a
- 24:03printed page in a Bible somewhere, it actually becomes a
- 24:06part of us. It becomes part of how we think
- 24:09it's. I think it's a resource and the
- 24:13Holy Spirit can point to and bring up within us in those
- 24:18trying moments in those conversations because we've
- 24:22internalized and it's become part of us and God has then
- 24:26shaped and formed us through it. Well, that's our conversation
