Latest / Abbey the Podcast Lady / Instagram Is Going Long Form: How Podcasters Can Get Ready
Transcript
- 0:00The Instagram that we know and love or love to
- 0:02hate is rolling out a new feature and it is catered
- 0:05at podcasters. Here's what you need to know.
- 0:12Hey, welcome to another episode of Abby the Podcast
- 0:15Lady. I am doing a little emergency podcast episode
- 0:19because there is a new feature rolling out on
- 0:22Instagram and it's actually called features.
- 0:25So what is happening on Instagram is kind of
- 0:28a 2 .0 version of their IGTV. Remember when that
- 0:32was a thing? Yeah, so they have announced this
- 0:34week that Instagram is going long form with their
- 0:37content. We know Instagram as a place for reels,
- 0:41honestly, as of late. It used to be a place for
- 0:43like... really artsy pictures of your Converse
- 0:47sneakers or like a picture of a Frappuccino,
- 0:49but that is so 2014. Now they are focusing on
- 0:53long form content and they didn't explicitly
- 0:55say that this is built for podcasters, but I
- 0:57have to believe that is built with podcasting
- 1:00in mind. Here's what's going down. They are now
- 1:02allowing 90 minute uploads for videos on Instagram.
- 1:09Crazy, right? Remember when it was like 30 seconds?
- 1:11We could like barely get a thought out. And now
- 1:13they're allowing for 90 minute videos. They're
- 1:15calling them features. They are landscape portioned
- 1:18from what I have seen in my research. And what
- 1:21is the really cool thing about it is they are
- 1:25linking the reels to these features. So podcasters,
- 1:29what have we been doing lately? We have been
- 1:30taking our long form content. We have been cutting
- 1:33it up into juicy parts to share on Instagram,
- 1:36on Facebook, on TikTok, on... LinkedIn, on Pinterest,
- 1:39posting it there and then hoping that someone
- 1:42likes that clip enough, is intrigued by that
- 1:45reel enough that they go and find the full podcast
- 1:48on their favorite listening platform. Now Instagram
- 1:51is like, no, no, no, no, no. You don't got to
- 1:53go anywhere. You're staying in -house for this
- 1:55one. And what's happening is you're going to
- 1:57post that clip and that clip is going to link
- 1:59back to the full episode. So if people really
- 2:01like it, they can just tap on it. takes them
- 2:04right to the full episode to watch the full thing.
- 2:06It keeps people in the app longer. It increases
- 2:09discoverability for shows. Like, I mean, just
- 2:11imagine sitting there and you're scrolling, you
- 2:13find something, they're like, oh yeah, that's
- 2:15really cool. I want to learn more about it. Tap
- 2:16full podcast right there, playing in your face,
- 2:19ready to go. I am enthralled. by this idea. I
- 2:23think this is awesome. This is something I actually
- 2:26was dreaming about last year at Podfest in Orlando.
- 2:29I was sitting there thinking, I'm like, I'm making
- 2:31all the short form content and I post it and
- 2:34then I'm still trying to direct someone somewhere
- 2:36else. Like what if there was just an app where
- 2:39I could post a clip and it would take me to the
- 2:41full episode right there. And I don't got to
- 2:44go anywhere else. I don't need to close out a
- 2:45different app. I don't need to log into a different
- 2:47account. It's all right there. And I don't know.
- 2:50I'm convinced my phone is reading my mind. And
- 2:52I'm okay with that because it's giving me what
- 2:54I want. This is exactly what I asked for a year
- 2:57ago now. And I'm excited to see this rollout.
- 3:00Now, this is a test. This isn't a full official
- 3:03rollout just yet. From what I've researched,
- 3:07they have been testing it in the Brazil market
- 3:09and now they are bringing it to the US. So creators
- 3:12across the United States are finally getting
- 3:13access to features. So I keep refreshing my phone,
- 3:17updating my app, logging into different accounts,
- 3:19seeing if I have access to the features feature.
- 3:22I want to so bad. I'm sure it'll get here soon
- 3:26enough, but it is not available to everyone just
- 3:28yet. So what do we need to do in the meantime
- 3:30to be prepared for? features on Instagram. If
- 3:34you are a podcaster and you have been clipping
- 3:36your show to make clips to promote the full episode,
- 3:40keep doing that. Keep doing that, but keep things
- 3:43organized. I want you to have special folders
- 3:45either on your phone, on your laptop, wherever
- 3:47you're doing your editing. Make sure that what
- 3:50you're doing is saving your clips. for each episode
- 3:53in a way that you can go and retrieve them. Because
- 3:56I've said it before, podcasting is evergreen.
- 3:58Your show is relevant today, this week, next
- 4:01week, and a year from now, more than likely,
- 4:03depending on your topic, of course. But... With
- 4:06that in mind, you can be recycling content. Once
- 4:08features roll out, you can take those old clips
- 4:10for those old episodes, upload the full episode,
- 4:13upload the clips, breathe new life into these
- 4:16episodes you worked so hard to create. It's going
- 4:19to be so much easier if you're prepared for that.
- 4:21So keep doing that, keep yourself organized,
- 4:23and be ready that way. In addition to that, keep
- 4:26making more clips. If you're only making like
- 4:28one or two reels for your show every week, Let's
- 4:32up that number because I think this is gonna
- 4:34end up being a huge numbers game First of all,
- 4:37you're gonna want really juicy really good clips
- 4:39well edited thought out, good hooks to them,
- 4:42text hooks, voice hooks, captions, the whole
- 4:45nine yards. You want good quality content so
- 4:47people are intrigued enough to watch the full
- 4:50episode. But you're probably going to want more
- 4:52content as well because if this is getting rolled
- 4:55out, people are going to use it and they're going
- 4:57to keep uploading more. So there's going to be
- 4:59a higher volume. So you're going to want a few
- 5:01more clips every single week to promote the show
- 5:03because they're going to be linking back and
- 5:05forth. Up your volume. I know it's another thing
- 5:08to do. But guess what? If you don't want to do
- 5:11it, you can hire people to do it for you. Hi,
- 5:12looking at me, Abby the podcast lady, Abby Graves
- 5:16Productions. We can help you with that. So if
- 5:18you're like, I don't want to do that. I'm already
- 5:20doing too much. I don't want to do that. This
- 5:21is just another thing. That's literally my whole
- 5:24business. So give me a call. Shoot me a message.
- 5:27And the last thing we can do to be prepared if
- 5:29you are not making a video podcast. Hate to tell
- 5:33you, but now's the time. I know you've been holding
- 5:35off as long as you can, and I'm not sitting here
- 5:37saying that I'm the oracle or anything, but what
- 5:40I do see is the writing on the wall. Instagram
- 5:43is asking for long form video content. And as
- 5:46a podcaster, you're already making long form
- 5:48audio content. So prop up your phone, prop up
- 5:51a camera and record the video too. Because not
- 5:54only are you going to be catering to what the
- 5:56platform is asking for, which is going to help
- 5:58you increase your visibility, build your community,
- 6:00build your brand, build your business, but it's
- 6:03also going to allow you to make things like reels.
- 6:05And it's just good practice for being on camera.
- 6:07So if you're not making a video podcast yet,
- 6:10now's the time. And I know part of me is like,
- 6:14oh, but podcasting is an audio first. platform.
- 6:17And I still believe that. I still think you need
- 6:19good audio. That is very important. But also
- 6:21I did not want to be a on video person. I went
- 6:25to radio school because I did not want to be
- 6:27on TV. I did not want to do my hair and makeup
- 6:29every morning and get on TV and broadcast. I
- 6:32wanted to hide behind my microphone in my band
- 6:35t -shirt and sweatpants. And that's what I did
- 6:38for a long time. But the time is now for a video
- 6:40podcast. And guess what? I'm still wearing sweatpants
- 6:42and you can't even see them right now. So there's
- 6:45ways around it. Video podcasting is here to stay.
- 6:47Now's the time to get into it. And you don't
- 6:50need to invest big right away. Your cell phone?
- 6:53The camera on here is more than good enough.
- 6:55You'll be fine with this to start. You can always
- 6:57upgrade down the road. So to put a bow on all
- 6:59of this, Instagram is moving to long form content,
- 7:02and this is great news for podcasters. It feels
- 7:05like this is built specifically for us. So start
- 7:09thinking about your game plan for this. Make
- 7:10sure you're making those clips. Make sure you're
- 7:12making more of them. Make sure you're keeping
- 7:13them organized. And if you haven't started on
- 7:15video yet. Now's the time. And if you have questions
- 7:18about starting on video, I actually have a free
- 7:21school community. Podcast Visibility School is
- 7:24available for you to join. It is totally free.
- 7:26The discussions, the topics, we get into it in
- 7:29the general chat. I have in -depth courses and
- 7:31tutorials available there for you as well. But
- 7:33join that free community. I have a link in the
- 7:35show notes below for Podcast Visibility School.
- 7:37So hopefully you'll join us there as we get ready
- 7:39for this new features rollout. Woo! I am really
- 7:42excited for this. I haven't been this excited
- 7:44for an Instagram feature. probably since stories.
- 7:47It's been a while. So excited to see how this
- 7:49rolls out. If you get access to it, tag me, let
- 7:52me know. I want to see how it's shaken out for
- 7:54you.
