Transcript
- 0:09Speaker 1: Hello, everyone, Welcome to Inside the Tape with Adam Kaplan
- 0:13Speaker 1: and the great grayco Self of NFL Films and NFL
- 0:16Speaker 1: Matchup Show. By the way, you better watch it on.
- 0:17Speaker 2: The ESPN over the weekend.
- 0:19Speaker 1: Right, good to.
- 0:19Speaker 2: See it, Adam, what's happening? All right?
- 0:22Speaker 1: Well, since it's an inside the Tape on the Eagles,
- 0:25Speaker 1: this is gonna be a little different. We did this
- 0:27Speaker 1: over the holidays, over the Christmas holiday, So because it's
- 0:31Speaker 1: their last game, we're gonna we're gonna we're gonna take
- 0:35Speaker 1: an extended look, but more discussion.
- 0:36Speaker 2: There's not gonna be any tape this.
- 0:38Speaker 1: Time, but we're gonna go over what you saw, but
- 0:40Speaker 1: we're gonna get this gives us more time to go
- 0:42Speaker 1: more in depth about not only what you saw in
- 0:45Speaker 1: this game, obviously, but just a microcosm of the seed
- 0:49Speaker 1: season positive or negative. We want to get into that
- 0:51Speaker 1: and may even get into a word if we have time,
- 0:53Speaker 1: about this weekend's divisional games. But Greg, I know you
- 0:57Speaker 1: watch the game at home, then you're watch an twenty two.
- 1:00Speaker 1: Was it what you thought when you got in your
- 1:02Speaker 1: office Monday morning?
- 1:07Speaker 2: You know it's always different when you watch the all
- 1:09Speaker 2: twenty two because TV doesn't really give you a true
- 1:12Speaker 2: sense of everything that's going on, you know. I thought
- 1:15Speaker 2: it was interesting the way the Eagles started the game,
- 1:17Speaker 2: which was not a surprise to me. Eight of their
- 1:19Speaker 2: first twelve plays through their first two possessions were Barkley runs,
- 1:24Speaker 2: and that did not surprise me at all. That's who
- 1:26Speaker 2: they are as a team. They're not really a passing team.
- 1:30Speaker 2: We've talked about that, you know, and I keep reminding
- 1:33Speaker 2: people that that was the case one year ago as
- 1:36Speaker 2: well when they won the Super Bowl, that they were
- 1:38Speaker 2: not really a passing team either. But because they won
- 1:41Speaker 2: the Super Bowl, people just assumed they were great in
- 1:43Speaker 2: every area. So I was not surprised at all by
- 1:46Speaker 2: the way they they came out and played and chose
- 1:50Speaker 2: to play in terms of approach, you know. Again, and
- 1:56Speaker 2: they ran reasonably well in the first half of the game.
- 1:58Speaker 2: I mean, Barkley, I think at fifteen for seventy one
- 2:02Speaker 2: in the first half, and Bigsby had a couple of
- 2:06Speaker 2: runs as well, so they you know, it almost looked
- 2:10Speaker 2: like the Eagles. But their O line is just not
- 2:15Speaker 2: good enough. It's just ultimately not good enough to be
- 2:18Speaker 2: able to play that way as a foundation of their
- 2:20Speaker 2: offense and what really stood out to me, And I
- 2:24Speaker 2: hated to see it because you hate to just pinpoint
- 2:27Speaker 2: one guy. But I thought Jurgens really played poorly. And
- 2:31Speaker 2: I don't know if he's injured and he's you know,
- 2:34Speaker 2: playing but it doesn't matter, or if ultimately he's not
- 2:38Speaker 2: as good as they thought and they signed him and
- 2:40Speaker 2: he's their guy, but he certainly did not have a
- 2:43Speaker 2: good season.
- 2:45Speaker 1: Yeah, let's get started with that right now. We'll get
- 2:48Speaker 1: in the run blocking and pass blocking. But you've told
- 2:51Speaker 1: us for many weeks at Jurgen's struggle. Now, I remember
- 2:54Speaker 1: he's had the back problems, he's had surgery, he had
- 2:57Speaker 1: injury problems lower body, were told going back to Nebraska,
- 3:01Speaker 1: But as you said, the Signetra extension, he's also had
- 3:04Speaker 1: some really good tape prior to the season.
- 3:06Speaker 2: Correct. Hope here is.
- 3:07Speaker 1: Greg, he gets a all season, no surgeries, just re
- 3:11Speaker 1: just feel good about your seat without having your backwork
- 3:14Speaker 1: done or anything else. But other than that, the other
- 3:17Speaker 1: guy is Lennon Dickerson. Greg, how did he look in
- 3:20Speaker 1: this game? If you noticed them?
- 3:22Speaker 2: I didn't notice him in a negative way in this game.
- 3:24Speaker 2: So I'm not going to you know, I'm not gonna
- 3:25Speaker 2: sit here and say I noticed him in a positive
- 3:27Speaker 2: way where he was just mauling people, but I certainly
- 3:29Speaker 2: didn't notice anything negative about him. Jurgens really stood out.
- 3:34Speaker 2: But you know, the Eagles run game in the first half,
- 3:37Speaker 2: it was diverse, it was multiple as far as concepts.
- 3:40Speaker 2: You know, it looked pretty good. You know. The problem
- 3:44Speaker 2: with that, of course, as you know, and certainly Barkley
- 3:48Speaker 2: had the twenty nine yard run, I think on the
- 3:50Speaker 2: second play of the game. But the run game, unless
- 3:53Speaker 2: you're getting explosive runs, which of course seemed to be
- 3:57Speaker 2: weekly a year ago, unless you're getting explosive of runs,
- 4:00Speaker 2: as you well know, the run game doesn't necessarily produce
- 4:03Speaker 2: explosive plays. It can produce the staining plays and maybe
- 4:07Speaker 2: once in a while on explosive play, but it doesn't
- 4:11Speaker 2: produce explosive plays in the same way in which a
- 4:13Speaker 2: pass game does.
- 4:15Speaker 1: Sure, sure and conceptually especially so one other thing with
- 4:20Speaker 1: on that twenty nine yard run, we had some people
- 4:22Speaker 1: ask us this was it because it looked like inside
- 4:25Speaker 1: he didn't have it, and then he broke it outside
- 4:26Speaker 1: and obviously he got down he was it block well
- 4:29Speaker 1: enough or he just he.
- 4:30Speaker 2: Well, he just saw what happened was it was an
- 4:33Speaker 2: inside run and the Niners just squeezed inside so far
- 4:38Speaker 2: on the edges that the edges it just opened up,
- 4:41Speaker 2: and Barkley saw it and just broke outside. It wasn't
- 4:44Speaker 2: meant to go there, but he just read read the
- 4:46Speaker 2: defensive flow hard inside and saw that there were space.
- 4:50Speaker 2: Although I will say one thing, and I actually mentioned
- 4:52Speaker 2: this to my matchup guys today and they agreed with me.
- 4:56Speaker 2: I didn't think Barkley looked as explosively fast when he
- 4:59Speaker 2: got out in space. And I even thought that when
- 5:02Speaker 2: I saw it live on TV.
- 5:05Speaker 1: Now, would you say, as an overview of the season,
- 5:09Speaker 1: let's leave at the numbers, just let's go by your tape,
- 5:12Speaker 1: the tape steady your two eyes. Did you feel he
- 5:15Speaker 1: looked as explosive as last season?
- 5:19Speaker 2: No?
- 5:20Speaker 3: And hell so, just I mean, that's just an eyeball thing.
- 5:23Speaker 3: I mean, there's no like, that's not you know, a
- 5:25Speaker 3: mathematical equation. I can't give you a number, but I
- 5:30Speaker 3: didn't think he looked quite the same. Now, he certainly
- 5:33Speaker 3: didn't look slow. It's not as if he's slow in plotting.
- 5:36Speaker 3: But I just I just didn't feel like he looked
- 5:39Speaker 3: exactly the same as he did a year ago, when
- 5:41Speaker 3: it seemed as if when he got first to past
- 5:43Speaker 3: the first level of the defense, it just seemed like
- 5:46Speaker 3: you knew a big play was coming, and it just
- 5:49Speaker 3: didn't seem that way this year.
- 5:51Speaker 1: Past protection of this game, how did you think it
- 5:53Speaker 1: held up over time?
- 5:55Speaker 2: I think four quarters, for the most part, I didn't
- 5:57Speaker 2: think past protection was a problem at all. They faced
- 5:59Speaker 2: a team that for the most part does not rushed
- 6:01Speaker 2: the quarterback, and I didn't think pass protection was a
- 6:04Speaker 2: problem at all.
- 6:05Speaker 1: In fact, wouldn't you say over the course of the
- 6:07Speaker 1: season it was fairly solid.
- 6:10Speaker 2: Yeah, I would, And I actually think in past protection
- 6:14Speaker 2: Fred Johnson did not do a bad job at all,
- 6:16Speaker 2: you know, because he ended up playing almost half the season,
- 6:19Speaker 2: and I didn't think he was a liability.
- 6:23Speaker 1: Yeah, that's been a pleasant surprise because you don't quite know,
- 6:26Speaker 1: and he wound up starting I think seven at left tackle,
- 6:29Speaker 1: won at right tackle. You don't know when you stick
- 6:32Speaker 1: a backup in there, how's he going to do over
- 6:34Speaker 1: the course of time. This is a saying backups could
- 6:36Speaker 1: probably help you for three to four games, but more
- 6:38Speaker 1: than that you're asking for trouble. But over so you
- 6:41Speaker 1: thought he did fairly solid job.
- 6:43Speaker 2: Over Yeah, I didn't think he was a liability. I mean,
- 6:45Speaker 2: obviously we're not going to compare anybody to Lane Johnson,
- 6:48Speaker 2: but I didn't think he was a liability by any means.
- 6:52Speaker 1: No, all right, let me get into aj Brown. And
- 6:55Speaker 1: this is strictly again your tape study. We had some
- 6:58Speaker 1: people ask us is he does he look heavy? We're
- 7:02Speaker 1: not gonna ask how much, she weays, we don't know
- 7:03Speaker 1: how muchy ways, but from a tape study, how's he
- 7:06Speaker 1: moving comparably to other sits? Does he look like the
- 7:08Speaker 1: same player?
- 7:10Speaker 2: Well, the only thing I'd say is, and again that's
- 7:13Speaker 2: always hard to know. As well, I would say that
- 7:16Speaker 2: you didn't see him, although I don't think they did
- 7:18Speaker 2: it as much this year, and I don't know the
- 7:20Speaker 2: answer for that, but you didn't see him when they
- 7:23Speaker 2: did ask him to run vertical routes outside the numbers,
- 7:26Speaker 2: he didn't get on top of corners as much as
- 7:30Speaker 2: he has in the past. Now, if that means he's
- 7:32Speaker 2: a step slower, maybe you know. But the point is
- 7:36Speaker 2: he was not getting on top of corners the way
- 7:38Speaker 2: he's done in the past. You know there were times
- 7:40Speaker 2: he did, but not quite as often.
- 7:42Speaker 1: So it hurts, you know, hurts his game. This is
- 7:45Speaker 1: an interesting game because it looking at your notes and
- 7:48Speaker 1: we all saw the same thing. He reverted back a
- 7:51Speaker 1: little bit to moving for no reason or moving breaking down,
- 7:55Speaker 1: which kills the progression.
- 7:56Speaker 2: Yeah, they were two in particular that really stood out
- 8:00Speaker 2: that he prevented, you know, good plays from happening.
- 8:04Speaker 1: And what when you say that, what did you notice
- 8:07Speaker 1: about because again, conceptually, we've shown this in the past.
- 8:12Speaker 1: He'll move, let's say, to the right and there's no
- 8:15Speaker 1: pressure and the bosses to go here, and then what
- 8:18Speaker 1: happens is because he's late, he runs to the far right.
- 8:22Speaker 1: He's broke it right away. Yeah, and then people blame
- 8:26Speaker 1: the coaches when it's really the quarterback.
- 8:28Speaker 2: And there were two really clean examples of that. One
- 8:32Speaker 2: was on first and tent on the first third quarter possession.
- 8:35Speaker 2: They ran a really well designed intermediate vertical route concept
- 8:39Speaker 2: that had a four strong element to it. Brown was
- 8:43Speaker 2: wide open on the crosser, wide open, and Hertz perceived
- 8:46Speaker 2: and overreacted to the backside pass rush of a Cleveland
- 8:50Speaker 2: Pharrell versus may Alatta. It was by it was not
- 8:53Speaker 2: really pressure, and he left the pocket, ran to his
- 8:56Speaker 2: right and threw it away. Then on third and thirteen,
- 8:59Speaker 2: early in the fourth quarter, it was another snapshot of
- 9:02Speaker 2: Hurts prematurely leaving the pocket. The Eagles ran a series
- 9:05Speaker 2: and I obviously know this from speaking to coaches through
- 9:08Speaker 2: the years. Everybody has it. It's called the byte series.
- 9:11Speaker 2: It's a third down concept. What you run is you
- 9:14Speaker 2: run mirrored curl routes and drag routes, and then you
- 9:16Speaker 2: run a sit route at the sticks right in front
- 9:18Speaker 2: of the quarterback. Smith's curl route into the boundary was
- 9:22Speaker 2: to throw it was there, but Hurts broke down with
- 9:24Speaker 2: no pressure. He ran to his right and and he
- 9:27Speaker 2: threw the ball away. And by the way, when he
- 9:30Speaker 2: broke down for no reason and moved to his right,
- 9:32Speaker 2: he also moved himself right into the stunt. So those
- 9:36Speaker 2: two examples were glaring and in a close game, you know,
- 9:39Speaker 2: those are plays.
- 9:40Speaker 1: That have to get made when Hurts is on the
- 9:42Speaker 1: top of his game. We're gonna leave twenty two ol,
- 9:44Speaker 1: because that's a different deal. When aj Brown first got there,
- 9:47Speaker 1: when the league didn't really know how to defend it,
- 9:49Speaker 1: what's it look like when it looks good from your
- 9:51Speaker 1: vantage point.
- 9:52Speaker 2: With Hurts, I mean, they're not, in a strict sense
- 9:58Speaker 2: a drop back pass team at him. So you know,
- 10:00Speaker 2: it's not like you watch other teams where you know,
- 10:02Speaker 2: you just see the quarterback drop back and boom the ball.
- 10:05Speaker 2: You know, it's one of those that's not who he
- 10:09Speaker 2: is and that's not the way their past game is
- 10:11Speaker 2: primarily because that's not who he is. So what Hurts
- 10:14Speaker 2: is playing at his best, what we've seen for the
- 10:18Speaker 2: most part over the years is throws outside the numbers.
- 10:21Speaker 2: Now they're timing throws. I mean, he throws with good timing.
- 10:23Speaker 2: He can throw a beautiful fade ball, he throws a
- 10:26Speaker 2: beautiful deep ball. You know, every once in a while
- 10:30Speaker 2: you'll see him throw the ball between the numbers, but
- 10:33Speaker 2: not very often than last year. But yeah, yeah, but
- 10:37Speaker 2: that's kind of who he is, you know. And and
- 10:40Speaker 2: you know the one other thing, the one other thing
- 10:44Speaker 2: too that has certainly stood out this year. And I
- 10:46Speaker 2: know people might look at it and say that it's
- 10:49Speaker 2: on the coaches. We don't know that. I'm not in
- 10:50Speaker 2: the building, but certainly there were fewer design quarterback runs
- 10:54Speaker 2: this year than there were a year ago. Now again,
- 10:57Speaker 2: I don't know if if that's something Hurts doesn't want
- 10:59Speaker 2: to do, or if that's something the coaching staff just
- 11:02Speaker 2: didn't call. We don't know the answer to that. But
- 11:05Speaker 2: there were a meaningfully fewer number of quarterback design runs
- 11:09Speaker 2: this year than there were in years past. And as
- 11:13Speaker 2: you know, I mean, look, you can go back to
- 11:16Speaker 2: the Super Bowl year of twenty twenty two when that
- 11:19Speaker 2: part of the Eagles offense was a really important deal.
- 11:22Speaker 2: And the reason it's important is not just because he's
- 11:25Speaker 2: a good runner. It's because it impacts the way defenses
- 11:29Speaker 2: have to play, and defense has become more predictable, you know,
- 11:32Speaker 2: when you put together a run game. And this is
- 11:36Speaker 2: something I learned from talking to a coach, and you know,
- 11:40Speaker 2: because I always try to learn how coach you see it,
- 11:42Speaker 2: because that's really because that's what I do. I sit
- 11:44Speaker 2: and watch tape, so I think like a coach because
- 11:46Speaker 2: I'm watching tape. You know, when you put together a
- 11:49Speaker 2: run game, what you're trying to do is you're trying
- 11:52Speaker 2: to find out what the fronts are with the least
- 11:56Speaker 2: a variance. And by that, I mean, so if you
- 11:59Speaker 2: line up in base personnel on offense, you're likely to
- 12:02Speaker 2: get base personnel on defense, okay, And there's less front
- 12:07Speaker 2: diversity and multiplicity in a defense's base fronts than there
- 12:12Speaker 2: are when they're in their nickel or they're dying. So
- 12:15Speaker 2: you're trying to find where there's the least variance in
- 12:20Speaker 2: defensive fronts. And that's how you want to start how
- 12:23Speaker 2: you build your run game, because if you pretty much know,
- 12:27Speaker 2: if we line up with such and such personnel, we're
- 12:30Speaker 2: going to get one of two fronts, then you can
- 12:32Speaker 2: build your run game because you know what you can
- 12:35Speaker 2: do against those one or two fronts.
- 12:37Speaker 1: Yeah, no doubt. Speaking of the run game, now other
- 12:41Speaker 1: questions and other issues. So we see Cam lat two
- 12:44Speaker 1: has been kind of a nice story four or forty
- 12:46Speaker 1: nine er by.
- 12:46Speaker 2: The way, like one snap this week.
- 12:48Speaker 1: Yeah, it surprised me. I don't know what happened there.
- 12:51Speaker 1: But Kim lat two is a guy you liked. I remember,
- 12:54Speaker 1: In fact, I remember that when we started talking about it,
- 12:57Speaker 1: you said, hey, you know what, I'm gonna get a
- 12:58Speaker 1: scout report out. I liked him to me, Greg, Greg Calcata,
- 13:03Speaker 1: we kind of know this. He's not in line. Why
- 13:05Speaker 1: tight end, I know there you have pointed out some
- 13:08Speaker 1: good blocks from him this season, but overall it's not
- 13:10Speaker 1: been great. Cam Lato to me, has been one of
- 13:13Speaker 1: these mysteries with his coaching staff that I've never quite understood.
- 13:16Speaker 2: What don't they see in him?
- 13:16Speaker 1: I know there's no way you can answer that, but
- 13:18Speaker 1: let's leave you let's let's let's put it to it
- 13:20Speaker 1: like this, when you've watched Kim Lato this season, what
- 13:24Speaker 1: have you seen from him?
- 13:25Speaker 2: Well, I would answer that this way, Adam, in the
- 13:27Speaker 2: context of their offense. Okay, that's that's what we have.
- 13:31Speaker 2: This is their offense. Yep, him lot too to me,
- 13:34Speaker 2: and again you know me well enough to know I
- 13:36Speaker 2: don't rip coaching staffs because I'm not there. I don't
- 13:39Speaker 2: know the conversations that the coaches have at nine o'clock
- 13:42Speaker 2: at night when they get together and really talk it
- 13:44Speaker 2: up and try to figure things out, you know. But
- 13:49Speaker 2: it would just seem to me that cam Lotu would
- 13:52Speaker 2: really fit what they're trying to do as their second
- 13:54Speaker 2: tight end because he's clearly the best blocking tight end,
- 13:59Speaker 2: you know, certainly obviously better than Calcatarian Grandson. So you know, again,
- 14:05Speaker 2: but they don't play him that way, you know, Goddard
- 14:07Speaker 2: got beat and by Huff, you know, in this game
- 14:10Speaker 2: on a where Huff crossed his face and tackled Barkley
- 14:13Speaker 2: for a loss. You know, So it would just seem
- 14:16Speaker 2: within the context of how they play that a Lot
- 14:19Speaker 2: two would be someone you'd want to put out there
- 14:21Speaker 2: because he is a good blocker.
- 14:23Speaker 1: Yeah he's uh, it's a good fine for but he
- 14:25Speaker 1: goes And let's not forget he was a third round
- 14:27Speaker 1: pick from the Niners, you know, which is hard to
- 14:31Speaker 1: believe that they you know, they walked away from him.
- 14:33Speaker 1: He goes, brought him in. I give them credit for
- 14:35Speaker 1: keeping them on the roster. Uh, your last after last season,
- 14:40Speaker 1: and he made the roster and was a good story
- 14:42Speaker 1: and then you know he barely plays, and I'm just
- 14:45Speaker 1: puzzled there as we always. You know, there's a reason
- 14:47Speaker 1: for this. That's something that whoever is calling the plays
- 14:51Speaker 1: and designing everything this coming season, they've got to figure
- 14:55Speaker 1: out a way to get this guy on the field.
- 14:56Speaker 1: He's a good serve And by the way, to be
- 14:57Speaker 1: a third round pick, you're not drafting a blocking tent
- 14:59Speaker 1: and strict in the third round because.
- 15:01Speaker 2: No, no, I thought again, I didn't think he was
- 15:03Speaker 2: a number one tight end, but I thought he could
- 15:05Speaker 2: be a really solid number two tight end, you know.
- 15:09Speaker 2: And obviously the Niners did not think so because they
- 15:12Speaker 2: cut him, But yet they thought so when they drafted him.
- 15:15Speaker 2: Ory wouldn't have drafted him in the third round and
- 15:19Speaker 2: Deals picked him up obviously, but you know, he hasn't
- 15:22Speaker 2: played much at all.
- 15:23Speaker 1: Another guy people want to know about Number fifty six,
- 15:26Speaker 1: Tyler Steamer, former tackle Atbama playing guard. Now, like, what
- 15:30Speaker 1: was your what was your overview of him for the season.
- 15:33Speaker 2: I would say it was an uneven up and down season.
- 15:35Speaker 2: I think that if he's going to continue to be
- 15:37Speaker 2: the starter to right guard, and that's I think something
- 15:39Speaker 2: they'll have to, you know, study in detail, then he's
- 15:42Speaker 2: going to have to get stronger. I think he's going
- 15:44Speaker 2: to have to be more I hate to say more physical,
- 15:47Speaker 2: because guys can be physical but just not strong, you know.
- 15:50Speaker 2: But I think he's going to have to be stronger
- 15:53Speaker 2: in being able to block one on one on drive
- 15:56Speaker 2: blocks and base blocks. You know, obviously if you're part
- 15:59Speaker 2: of a double team or acount block, pretty much anybody
- 16:01Speaker 2: should be able to do that. But I think he's
- 16:04Speaker 2: going to have to just get stronger as far as
- 16:06Speaker 2: those individual one on one base blocks and drive blocks.
- 16:10Speaker 1: During my lot of Greg, he was not only injury
- 16:12Speaker 1: put really at all this season. But you saw him
- 16:15Speaker 1: the season I know, when we would do these shows
- 16:18Speaker 1: every now and then you go, boys, there's something wrong
- 16:20Speaker 1: with my lot. He wasn't moving well. I missed a
- 16:22Speaker 1: block overall for the entire of the season. What do
- 16:25Speaker 1: you think of sixty eight my lot and not have.
- 16:27Speaker 2: His best season by any means. I mean, obviously he's
- 16:29Speaker 2: not going anywhere, and he'll be there left tackle next year,
- 16:33Speaker 2: and he's obviously very gifted physically, size, athleticism, rare traits.
- 16:38Speaker 2: But I just don't think he had his best season.
- 16:40Speaker 2: And I don't know the reason why. I'm not an
- 16:42Speaker 2: O line coach. I can't dissect him the way just
- 16:44Speaker 2: Stallin can or an old line coach Ken. But I
- 16:47Speaker 2: didn't think that overall he had the kind of season
- 16:51Speaker 2: I'm sure they expected.
- 16:53Speaker 1: I'm going to bring up a guy that we first
- 16:55Speaker 1: talked about in training camp. I remember calling you about
- 16:57Speaker 1: him and I said, this guy number, I don't know
- 16:59Speaker 1: what I think he's number eighty. The same is Darius
- 17:02Speaker 1: Coop from Charlton State.
- 17:03Speaker 2: Greg. So, if A. J.
- 17:05Speaker 1: Brown's traded, I'm not saying he's going to start, but
- 17:08Speaker 1: he could, he could want to sort of challenging for
- 17:11Speaker 1: the number three role. What do you see from Darius
- 17:13Speaker 1: Scooper and his woman playing time this season?
- 17:15Speaker 2: Yeah? And again, you know, he was a guy that
- 17:17Speaker 2: I did not do coming out obviously, But then when
- 17:19Speaker 2: when training camp came and he had that really good
- 17:21Speaker 2: preseason game with Tanner Keith throwing to him, actually went
- 17:24Speaker 2: back and watched his tape at was it Charlton State.
- 17:27Speaker 1: Darlton State?
- 17:28Speaker 2: Yeah, Yeah, and I was impressed with what I saw. Now,
- 17:30Speaker 2: again it's easy to say, well, he's not playing against
- 17:33Speaker 2: you know, big time players. I don't necessarily look at that.
- 17:36Speaker 2: I look at what the guy's trades are, and you know,
- 17:39Speaker 2: again watching his tape, I didn't come away going, Wow,
- 17:41Speaker 2: this guy's going to be Jerry Rice. But I mean
- 17:43Speaker 2: I thought that this guy's got some pretty good trades
- 17:46Speaker 2: and I think he can play in the league. Now,
- 17:48Speaker 2: we've seen receivers over the years at him as you
- 17:50Speaker 2: well know, who are not high draft choices, and even
- 17:53Speaker 2: free agent receivers who've come in and been quality players.
- 17:57Speaker 2: Not number ones, you know, not superstars, but quality players.
- 18:02Speaker 2: Could he turn out to be that guy? Clearly they
- 18:06Speaker 2: see something in him because he got more snaps as
- 18:08Speaker 2: the season went on, So they see something in him.
- 18:12Speaker 2: Maybe with another training camp, you know, another off season,
- 18:15Speaker 2: you know he can develop into a legitimate quality NFL
- 18:20Speaker 2: wide receiver. I remember you would ask me.
- 18:25Speaker 1: Because you watch this college tape, right and then you
- 18:28Speaker 1: saw you saw him in trade. I guess he saw
- 18:30Speaker 1: his preseason tape. You go, did he I think he said?
- 18:33Speaker 1: Did he put a lot of weight off?
- 18:34Speaker 2: Said?
- 18:34Speaker 1: I think he's fifteen pounds up.
- 18:36Speaker 2: Yeah, he gained weight because he was much dinner in college. Yeah,
- 18:39Speaker 2: so he was old to do that by agent scouts.
- 18:44Speaker 2: I'm not part of that, but you know he was.
- 18:47Speaker 2: He was clearly lighter when he played in college.
- 18:49Speaker 1: Offensively, Greg, we know a lot of the same players
- 18:52Speaker 1: were back from the super Bowl team, a little different
- 18:54Speaker 1: on defense. He had a lot of changes when you
- 18:58Speaker 1: look at it. And we'll talk more to you about
- 19:00Speaker 1: this in the off season. But for them to grow offensively,
- 19:04Speaker 1: we know they're a run team. That's not going to
- 19:05Speaker 1: change as long as Barclay's here. Especially, what would you
- 19:08Speaker 1: like to see going forward here to get Tom the
- 19:10Speaker 1: next level offensively.
- 19:12Speaker 2: Well, the bottom line is it's the NFL adam, So
- 19:14Speaker 2: regardless of what your quarterback is or isn't or wants
- 19:18Speaker 2: or doesn't want. You know, and you know you and
- 19:20Speaker 2: I can't answer that because we're not sitting there in
- 19:23Speaker 2: the meetings, But their past game has to become far
- 19:27Speaker 2: more expansive by NFL standards. It just has to. And
- 19:33Speaker 2: you know, you hate to say it, but ultimately, if
- 19:36Speaker 2: Jalen Hurts can't do that, then you have to get
- 19:38Speaker 2: another quarterback. I mean, your past game has to become
- 19:43Speaker 2: much more than it is. And you can blame anybody
- 19:47Speaker 2: you want, and I'm not here to blame anybody. All
- 19:50Speaker 2: I'm saying is, you know, and I joked with you
- 19:53Speaker 2: before we started talking when they hired Nick Siriani. You know,
- 19:56Speaker 2: they didn't say, wow, you're hired because you only know
- 20:00Speaker 2: five pass game concepts. You know, obviously these coaches know
- 20:05Speaker 2: all these concepts. So now you can get into things
- 20:08Speaker 2: which we don't know, like play calling, sequencing of plays,
- 20:12Speaker 2: all those things that you know. I know, you speak
- 20:14Speaker 2: to John D. Philippa, who did all this in the league,
- 20:16Speaker 2: and you know, and I know Flip as well, and
- 20:18Speaker 2: he could speak to you about it with far more
- 20:20Speaker 2: intelligence than I could. But the bottom line is you
- 20:23Speaker 2: need a pass game that is an NFL pass game,
- 20:27Speaker 2: because right this season, and to some degree even last
- 20:30Speaker 2: year when they won the Super Bowl, the pass game
- 20:33Speaker 2: is not really an NFL pass game. I'm talking conceptually, obviously.

- 24:02Speaker 1: When you because when you talk to prop personnel guys
- 24:05Speaker 1: and they'll you know, I ask them if you have
- 24:07Speaker 1: the Eagles this year or some guys don't, some guys do,
- 24:09Speaker 1: they kind of come out like you do you watch
- 24:12Speaker 1: tape of this team, then you see the Eagles pass gameing,
- 24:14Speaker 1: go boy, this is really simplistic comparably to other schemes.
- 24:19Speaker 2: You know. And yes, and that's and that's from tape study.
- 24:22Speaker 2: That's not it's just so people understand, that's not an
- 24:25Speaker 2: opinion or an interpretation. That's the tape study. And you know,
- 24:29Speaker 2: you validate it just by talking with other people who
- 24:32Speaker 2: study tape as well. I mean, the bottom line is
- 24:35Speaker 2: their past game on tape is you know. I hate
- 24:39Speaker 2: to use words that make it seem like people are
- 24:40Speaker 2: stupid because I don't talk like that, but by NFL standards,
- 24:44Speaker 2: it's kind of elementary, you know, And so there has
- 24:47Speaker 2: to be a reason for that. And I'm not going
- 24:50Speaker 2: to sit here and speculate on the reason because then
- 24:53Speaker 2: it comes across as blame. And you know, I don't
- 24:55Speaker 2: know the interaction of everything that leads it to be
- 24:58Speaker 2: that way, but it is elementary.
- 25:00Speaker 1: Sure, all right, good stuff, Greg. We appreciate your honesty
- 25:03Speaker 1: and the intelligence there in the intel. So for that man,
- 25:07Speaker 1: Greg co Sell in his film Vaulted NFL Films, I'm
- 25:10Speaker 1: Adam Kaplan.
- 25:11Speaker 2: We'll see you on the defensive tape
