- 0:00Well, this morning, we're going to be concluding
- 0:04with the time of communion at the end of the
- 0:08service. But I wanted to spend a few moments
- 0:11on this Thanksgiving weekend out of Psalm 107.
- 0:18You're going to want your Bible today. You might
- 0:20want your notebook. As I was in Psalm 107, I
- 0:25was struck by the beauty of the pattern. that
- 0:29is seen. It was a continued pattern through the
- 0:33first half of the chapter. And as we did that,
- 0:37I'm like Psalm 107 just like wrote my sermon
- 0:40for me. But I want to just begin by opening with
- 0:45verses one and two. Give thanks to the Lord for
- 0:48he is good. His love endures forever. Let the
- 0:53redeemed of the Lord. Tell their story. That's
- 0:57just what the girls were talking about. Let the
- 1:00redeemed tell their story. Nobody else can tell
- 1:04your story. Only you can tell your story. So
- 1:09tell your story. And so Emerson said this. He
- 1:16said that if the stars came out only once a year,
- 1:20everybody would stay up all night to behold them.
- 1:27We have seen the stars so often that we don't
- 1:31bother to look at them anymore. We have grown
- 1:34accustomed to our blessings. I had that thought
- 1:39when a couple of weeks ago, Darren and I were
- 1:41flying home from Texas, from Dallas. And we were
- 1:48flying. Now, I typically don't want a window
- 1:51seat. I can't look out the window because I get
- 1:53sick. But I was doing pretty good because I had
- 1:56my Dramamine in me. And so as we were coming
- 2:00down into St. Louis, I thought it was so rude.
- 2:05The lady in my row kept her window closed the
- 2:08whole time, so I couldn't see anything. So I'm
- 2:11looking out at somebody else's window, and it
- 2:15was the peak fall colors. flying down over St.
- 2:22Louis. It was a sea of colorful trees. And then
- 2:27I start looking around the airplane, and I see
- 2:32not one person looking out the window. They all
- 2:36were on their phones and tablets. And I had the
- 2:41thought, beyond just the fact that... We have
- 2:45this sea of beauty outside our window. We've
- 2:48grown so accustomed even to the idea of flying
- 2:51that we don't look at what's outside our window.
- 2:57We grow accustomed to our blessings. And so today
- 3:02as we are reading through Psalm 107, I want us
- 3:06to take a few moments on this Thanksgiving weekend,
- 3:10and I want us to call to mind. The blessings
- 3:14that he has given to us. The Israelites had this
- 3:18problem themselves. They even in the wilderness
- 3:23had grown accustomed to their blessings. They
- 3:26were without food and they were longing for the
- 3:29food of Egypt. And they begin to complain. They
- 3:36begin to complain. And so what does God do? He
- 3:39begins to feed them every morning with manna.
- 3:44Every morning, I'm like, man, you don't even
- 3:47got to cook. You don't got to do dishes. Right?
- 3:53I have dishes I have to go home and wash today.
- 3:57This is my reality. But if food, like, I don't
- 4:00care. You have me to your house. I don't care
- 4:02what you cook for me. I didn't have to cook it,
- 4:04and I'm not cleaning it up. So I will take great
- 4:06joy in that food. But the Israelites grew accustomed
- 4:11to their blessing. And they got a bit of a complaining
- 4:15spirit. And they said this, but now our whole
- 4:18being is dried up. They're so dramatic. Our whole
- 4:22being is dried up. There is nothing at all except
- 4:28this manna before our eyes. I kind of feel this
- 4:32way when Darren's in Petersburg. He hasn't been
- 4:36there in like four months. So he's there today.
- 4:38So I can again say whatever I want because he's
- 4:41not here. I feel this way when I'm in the living
- 4:45room and I can hear Darren roaming the kitchen.
- 4:48And I hear the refrigerator being opened. And
- 4:52I know he's just standing there staring at it.
- 4:54And I'll call out suggestions. There's this in
- 4:57there. There's this in there. There's this in
- 4:59there. I'm going to go to Thornton's and get
- 5:01a hot dog. Right? This is all we have in here,
- 5:05healthy stuff. I'm drying up. I need a greasy
- 5:10hot dog. Nothing but manna. They are experiencing
- 5:16a miracle of God's provision every morning. And
- 5:22they grew tired of it. How many of you remember
- 5:27Keith Green? Some of you older ones. Darren and
- 5:31I are big Keith Green. We read his book. I read
- 5:34his book multiple times. Love Keith Green. And
- 5:38so he wrote. How many of you remember his manna
- 5:42song? Oh, yeah. Oh, no. Manna again? Manna waffles.
- 5:50Manna burgers. Manna bagels? Filet of manna.
- 5:54Manna patty? But manna bread. And then he goes
- 6:00on to say this. We once complained for something
- 6:03new to munch. The ground opened up and had some
- 6:07of us for lunch. He had a way of really getting
- 6:11to the heart of things. In Numbers 11, this is
- 6:17what happened. God finally sends meat to them.
- 6:22But in the sending of the meat, in the provision
- 6:25of the meat, God gets exasperated with them.
- 6:29And it says that they buried the people who had
- 6:34been so greedy for meat. They called the place
- 6:39graves for the greedy. Graves for the greedy.
- 6:48I don't know about you, but I don't want my life
- 6:50to be a grave of the greedy. I don't want to
- 6:55become so accustomed to my blessings that I have
- 7:00a complaining spirit and I forget to be thankful.
- 7:03And so in Psalm 107, We're going to look here
- 7:08in this rhythm of this psalm, the beauty of this
- 7:11psalm. And we're going to, some of this is going
- 7:15to apply. You're going to be like, ah, that was
- 7:17me. That's who I was before Christ. Some of you
- 7:23in here might say, that's me now. I need Christ.
- 7:27But we're going to begin, we'll just begin from
- 7:29the beginning once again in verse 1. Give thanks
- 7:33to the Lord. For he is good, his love endures
- 7:37forever. Let the redeemed of the Lord tell their
- 7:41story. Those who he redeemed from the hand of
- 7:46the foe. Those he gathered from the lands, from
- 7:50east and west and north and south. Some wandered
- 7:55in desert wastelands, finding no way to a city
- 7:59where they could settle. They were hungry. and
- 8:03thirsty, and their lives ebbed away. This person
- 8:10would be the distressed wanderer, and that might
- 8:14have been some of you, wandering from this thing
- 8:18to the next thing, hungry and thirsty, unable
- 8:21to find anything that can satisfy, anything that
- 8:25can settle your spirit to say, I'm home, I'm
- 8:28at rest, I'm at peace, I'm content. You were
- 8:33this desert wanderer, this distressed wanderer.
- 8:40When we look, we see in the New Testament a wonderful
- 8:44example of this, and Kathy was even referring
- 8:46to it. In Luke 15, we have the account of the
- 8:50prodigal. And when I read the account of the
- 8:53prodigal, I see a distressed wanderer. He, in
- 9:00verse 13, the younger son, it says he gathers
- 9:03everything that he had, and he set off for a
- 9:06distant country where he squandered his wealth
- 9:10in wild living. He was going from one thing to
- 9:15the next thing to the next thing, but nothing
- 9:18could ever satisfy. Nothing could ever fill this
- 9:23hunger he didn't know what it was for, this thirst
- 9:27he didn't recognize why it was there. And so
- 9:33it says, after he'd spent everything, there was
- 9:36a severe famine in the country, and he began
- 9:39to be in need. So he went and he hired himself
- 9:43out to a citizen in the country who sent him
- 9:46to his fields to feed the pigs. Let's remember,
- 9:51you might think pigs are cute, and we'd certainly
- 9:55enjoy eating pigs, but for him, this was an unclean
- 9:58food. This was an unclean animal. It's bad enough
- 10:03that he's going to take care of these pigs, but
- 10:06for his culture, these are unclean animals. Verse
- 10:1416, he longed to fill his stomach with the pods
- 10:18that the pigs were eating. But no one gave him
- 10:22anything. And then there's verse 17. And it says,
- 10:28he came to his senses. I pray that over my kid.
- 10:33He came to his senses. He said, how many of my
- 10:38father's hired servants have food to spare? And
- 10:42here I am starving to death. I will set out and
- 10:45go back to my father and say, I've sinned against
- 10:47heaven and you. I'm no longer worthy to be called
- 10:51your son. Make me like one of your hired servants.
- 10:55So he got up and he went to his father. What
- 10:58did he do? He went back to the source. He went
- 11:03back to that place that would satisfy the hunger,
- 11:07that would satisfy the thirst, that would be
- 11:10his resting, his home place. I am at rest here.
- 11:16He was a distressed wanderer. And in Psalm 107,
- 11:22verse 6, here's what the distressed wanderers
- 11:25do. They eventually will cry out to the Lord
- 11:29in their trouble. And he delivered them from
- 11:34their distress. He led them by a straight way
- 11:39to a city where they could settle. He brought
- 11:42them home. They cried out to the Lord, and he
- 11:47brought them home. If this is you today, you're
- 11:50saying, I don't know, there's just this thing
- 11:52I can't be satisfied. I can't seem to settle
- 11:56into anything. Some people like this will go
- 11:59from job to job to job to job, relationship to
- 12:02relationship to relationship, church to church
- 12:05to church, because they can't find in God what
- 12:10they need. And so they search everywhere. Let
- 12:16those, how many of you would say, that was me,
- 12:19I was a distressed wanderer. I had a hunger and
- 12:22a thirst and I didn't know how to satisfy it,
- 12:25right? Many of you raising your hands. And so
- 12:27those who were the distressed wanderer, if that
- 12:30is you, verse 8 and 9, let them give thanks to
- 12:34the Lord for his unfailing love and his wonderful
- 12:39deeds for mankind. For he satisfies the thirsty,
- 12:44and he fills the hungry with good things. How
- 12:48many of you, God has done wondrous deeds on your
- 12:51behalf. He has satisfied you. He has filled you
- 12:56with good things. Give thanks today. Give praise
- 13:01today. The distressed wanderer. In the next portion,
- 13:08we see another. In verse 10, some sat in darkness,
- 13:17in utter darkness, prisoners suffering in iron
- 13:22chains because they rebelled against God's commands
- 13:26and despised the plans of the Most High. So he
- 13:32subjected them to bitter labor. They stumbled
- 13:36and there was no one to help. Some of you came
- 13:41out of the place of great darkness. The chains
- 13:45of the kingdom of darkness were heavy around
- 13:48your neck. And it wasn't until he came, and there's
- 13:53a beautiful passage that says that he ushers
- 13:56us out of the kingdom of darkness and into the
- 13:59kingdom of light. Right? How many of you, that's
- 14:02me. I was ushered in out of the darkness and
- 14:06into the light. I read. the account of a young
- 14:12lady named Sophia. This is a little lengthy,
- 14:16but I think you're going to be blessed by her
- 14:18testimony. It was printed in Christianity Today.
- 14:23But she tells her story saying, my earliest memory
- 14:27is of crying inside a locked supply room. My
- 14:32mother had sold me as a child laborer, as she
- 14:36often did. I was three. At four, my mother sold
- 14:42me for $58 as a child laborer to the imam of
- 14:48the neighborhood's Muslim community. I lived
- 14:51in a locked room and by age 25 gave birth to
- 14:55two girls, both taken from me immediately. At
- 14:59this point, life became unbearable. It felt unbearable,
- 15:04and when I began, it's when that unbearable moment
- 15:07hit her. that she began to hear a gentle whisper
- 15:12in her ear, it's okay, just stay alive. I didn't
- 15:19know who or what this voice was, but it comforted
- 15:23me. It was powerful yet gentle. One night, not
- 15:28long after the birth of her second child, she
- 15:31awoke at three in the morning to the voice telling
- 15:35me to escape through the window. I was confused,
- 15:39but the voice said, it's time. I bargained with
- 15:44the voice. If I jump, you have to promise I'll
- 15:49get back everything I have lost. It was a second
- 15:52story window. Helped by a woman in the community,
- 15:57she was sent to another town to work where a
- 16:00U .S. Army officer began to pursue her romantically.
- 16:04She followed him to Chicago. where it was not
- 16:08the fresh start she had hoped for. During the
- 16:12next six and a half years, the man abused me.
- 16:16I tested positive for HIV, developed tuberculosis,
- 16:19and landed in the hospital, wrecked with despair.
- 16:23All the money I'd earned working in Chicago went
- 16:27toward my medical bills. Soon I had nothing left,
- 16:30and the officer sent me back to Bangkok. I never
- 16:34saw him again. For three months, I languished
- 16:38alone in a hospital bed. My legs became paralyzed,
- 16:42and though I could hear what went on around me,
- 16:46I could not move or see. I could not remember
- 16:48my name or who I was. During this season of torment,
- 16:54I silently called upon every God I knew, yet
- 16:58nothing happened. An American friend visited
- 17:03and talked about Jesus with me, asking, why don't
- 17:07you ask Jesus to be your Savior? Unable to say
- 17:11anything or acknowledge that I had heard, I cried
- 17:14out to Jesus in my heart, if you are with me,
- 17:17come save me. For three months, I languished
- 17:23alone in a hospital bed. This season in that
- 17:32torment, she called on Jesus, but nothing had
- 17:35changed, right? She didn't see any change at
- 17:38all. But what she did is what Psalm 107, verse
- 17:4513 now says again. They cried out to the Lord
- 17:49in their trouble, and he saved them from their
- 17:53distress. He brought them out of darkness, the
- 17:56utter darkness, and broke away their chains.
- 18:00She didn't know it yet, but she had called on
- 18:03Jesus, and he was at work bringing her out of
- 18:08darkness and breaking her chains of bondage and
- 18:12infirmity. Her story continues. After crying
- 18:22out to Jesus, she went for six weeks without
- 18:25food or medicine, only water. Yet strangely,
- 18:31I never felt like I was alone, because the voice
- 18:34that had spoken to me all those years ago spoke
- 18:37again, live. That's all it takes, one word, live.
- 18:47In that little house, I understood that it had
- 18:50been Jesus' voice all along. And in his presence,
- 18:54I slowly came back to life. My wounds healed.
- 18:58My spirits lifted. And one day, it seemed as
- 19:01if Jesus was telling me, come out. See, her family
- 19:05had sequestered her in isolation in that little
- 19:08room. And now Jesus is saying to her, come out.
- 19:13I stumbled out of the wooden house like Lazarus.
- 19:17My family, the villagers, and the doctors who
- 19:20tried to heal me were all shocked. A pastor in
- 19:23Bangkok had visited me while on my deathbed.
- 19:27After my miraculous healing, he brought me to
- 19:30a ministry called The Well to help me recuperate.
- 19:35I told him I wanted to learn more about the voice
- 19:38that had brought me back to life. And that's
- 19:41when I gave my life to Jesus. The pastor helped
- 19:45me enroll at a Baptist seminary in Bangkok where
- 19:48I received my biblical studies certificate. Not
- 19:52long after I graduated, I felt God calling me
- 19:55back to return to the Muslim community I had
- 20:00escaped. Only God can do this in a life. Go back,
- 20:08God said. Learn to forgive and love them. The
- 20:13community still had both my daughters, and they
- 20:16didn't want to return them to me because I had
- 20:18become a Christian. But I slowly reestablished
- 20:23connections. I brought food and had meals with
- 20:26people. I accompanied elderly women to the hospital
- 20:29and shared how Jesus had befriended and saved
- 20:32me. Eight years after I returned to the community,
- 20:36The imam who had enslaved me called me on the
- 20:39phone, was dying of cancer and wanted to see
- 20:43me. I sat next to him and he asked me to forgive
- 20:46him and said, can you give me bread and coffee?
- 20:51I was stunned. He had locked me up for years.
- 20:58Why should I forgive and serve him? What was
- 21:02I even doing sitting there next to him? Then
- 21:07I remembered Jesus and his command to forgive
- 21:11and love my enemies. I took the bread. I believe
- 21:17this is the table of the Lord. I took the bread
- 21:20and I gave it to the imam. And the chains in
- 21:25my heart broke. I felt true freedom at last from
- 21:31this man and those terrible years. Later, right
- 21:35before he died, the imam asked if I wanted to
- 21:37have my daughters back. He didn't need to ask
- 21:42twice. Today, my two daughters, 25 and 32, live
- 21:47with me. When I jumped out of that window, I
- 21:51asked God to give me everything back. He kept
- 21:54his promise. He kept my daughters safe and returned
- 21:57them to me. He has transformed my suffering into
- 22:04an open door to minister to others in dire situations
- 22:08in Thailand, including prostitutes, abandoned
- 22:12children, and those who have been trafficked
- 22:15or without homes. Listen, only God can bring
- 22:19you out of that kind of darkness. Only God can
- 22:23break those kind of chains of bitterness and
- 22:26woundedness. Only God can do that. And for some
- 22:32of you, you might say, well, my story isn't that.
- 22:35Listen, it doesn't matter. Your darkness may
- 22:39be different. Your chains may be different. They
- 22:42may be of a lighter weight chain or maybe a heavier
- 22:46chain. It doesn't matter. There's no chain that
- 22:49is too heavy or too strong for the power of Jesus
- 22:53Christ. Not one. There's no darkness that cannot
- 22:58be lit up with the light of Christ. And so for
- 23:01some of you, this was you. You were in the darkness.
- 23:05You were captured by the chains. Maybe it's you
- 23:11today. Maybe you're in a darkness. Maybe you
- 23:16have chains. We have a great deliverer, Jesus
- 23:21Christ, who's just waiting to shed light in your
- 23:26darkness and break every chain. And so those
- 23:31of you who were darkness dwellers, Psalm 107
- 23:35verse 10 calls to you. Let them give thanks to
- 23:39the Lord for his unfailing love and his wonderful
- 23:43deeds for mankind. For he breaks down gates of
- 23:47bronze and cuts through bars of iron. So give
- 23:53praise, give thanks. Hallelujah. The next portion
- 23:58of Psalm 107, the next person that we find in
- 24:02this chapter, In verse 17, some became fools
- 24:07through their rebellious ways and suffered affliction
- 24:10because of their iniquities. They loathed all
- 24:14food and drew near the gates of death. This next
- 24:19person is the rebellious one. Israel, God's people
- 24:25in the Old Testament, this is their story, isn't
- 24:28it? Time and time again, they would rebel. Against
- 24:34the Lord. In fact, in Isaiah 48, he gives a picture
- 24:40of Israel. It's not a great picture. In fact,
- 24:47he says, listen to this, you descendants of Jacob.
- 24:51You who are called by the name of Israel. I knew
- 24:55how stubborn you were. Your neck muscles were
- 25:00iron. Your forehead was bronze. Some of you in
- 25:05here were very stubborn in bowing to your Lord.
- 25:12You came the hard way to bow before the Lord.
- 25:18You had a neck of iron. Your forehead was bronze.
- 25:24You could just like beat your head against the
- 25:26wall. He goes on to say, I am the Lord your God
- 25:34who teaches you what is best for you. This is
- 25:39the thing about the stubborn, rebellious one
- 25:42is they think they know what's best for themselves.
- 25:45And God is saying, no, I'm the one that teaches
- 25:47you what is best for you, who directs you in
- 25:51the way you should go. This is my favorite passage.
- 25:54Oh, if only, if only you had heeded. If only
- 26:01you had heeded and paid attention to my commands,
- 26:04you would have had peace. Your peace would have
- 26:09been like a river. Your well -being like the
- 26:13waves of the sea. How many of you, you were that
- 26:17rebellious one. You came to the Lord the hard
- 26:20way. Yeah. But there, just like all the others
- 26:28in Psalm 107 and verse 19, the rebellious cried
- 26:33out to the Lord in their trouble. The Israelites
- 26:35knew how to do that. They often had to do that.
- 26:38God brought them into captivity, and they would
- 26:42have to begin to again cry out to the Lord. And
- 26:46always he saved them from their distress. He
- 26:50sent out his word and healed them. He rescued
- 26:55them from the grave. Praise the Lord. The thing
- 27:01is, is that God's even more stubborn. His will
- 27:05is even stronger. And his will is to heal you.
- 27:10His will is to bring you up out of the grave.
- 27:14And so maybe that's you today. Some of you, that's
- 27:17who you were. But maybe today you're saying,
- 27:19I've been stubborn. I've been resisting the word
- 27:22of God in my life. Today is your day to cry out
- 27:27in trouble and receive healing. And so you today,
- 27:32who were the rebellious ones, hear the call of
- 27:36verses 21 and 22. Let them give thanks to the
- 27:40Lord for his unfailing love and his wonderful
- 27:44deeds for mankind. Let them sacrifice, thank
- 27:48offerings, and tell of his works with songs of
- 27:52joy. Sing it out. Sing out his good works, you
- 27:57who are the rebellious ones. All right, our next
- 28:01group right here, this is the last one, are the
- 28:05fearful ones. In verse 23, some went out on the
- 28:11sea in ships. They were merchants on the mighty
- 28:14waters. They saw the works of the Lord, his wonderful
- 28:18deeds in the deep. For he spoke and stirred up
- 28:21a tempest that lifted high the waves. They mounted
- 28:25up to the heavens and went down to the depths.
- 28:28In their peril, their courage melted away. They
- 28:31reeled and staggered like drunkards. They were
- 28:34at their wit's end. I think these are ones that
- 28:37started out as adventurers. They were going out
- 28:41on adventurous things on the seas. But then when
- 28:46things got a bit stormy, what happened? Fear
- 28:48came in. And they became so fearful that they
- 28:52staggered like drunkards at their wit's end.
- 28:58If that's you, you know what? You're in keeping
- 29:01here. You're in good company. Because as we look
- 29:06at some people in the Bible, they are just like
- 29:09you. They are just like you. Elijah had a great
- 29:14victory in the mountaintop where he called down
- 29:16fire from heaven, consuming the sacrifice over
- 29:21all of the other false prophets. I mean, you'd
- 29:24be like spiritually high that day. But then the
- 29:27next thing you read, he's running in fear from
- 29:30Jezebel. In fact, he has so much fear that he
- 29:37just wants to die. But it says that the Lord
- 29:43gave him food, gave him water, and gave him rest.
- 29:46And after that, he got up and ran 40 days to
- 29:49the cave, where in that moment in the cave, God's
- 29:54glory, his presence passed before him. And it's
- 29:58in that place that God says, I got a couple more
- 30:01kings for you to anoint, and it's time for you
- 30:04to go anoint Elisha to be raised up after you.
- 30:10He wasn't done yet. He got into a fearful place.
- 30:18Gideon was hiding out in the winepress from his
- 30:21enemies, declaring to be the weakest of the weak,
- 30:24when the angel comes and says, O mighty man of
- 30:28valor, and calls him to do battle on behalf of
- 30:32his people. And he brought peace to the land.
- 30:35He was hiding in fear. And then the word of the
- 30:39Lord came. Esther, she feared for her life when
- 30:43called upon to intercede with the king for her
- 30:46people. She didn't want to do it. Ultimately,
- 30:51though, we know her famous saying, if I perish,
- 30:55I perish. She went before the king and saved
- 30:58her people. The disciples, following this great
- 31:02miracle of multiplication of food for 5 ,000.
- 31:06Again, a great spiritual high. Look at what God
- 31:09has done. Yet they get in a boat and they face
- 31:13a fierce storm. And they are in fear until Jesus
- 31:19calms the storm. Peter. Peter walked on water
- 31:26until he began to sink in fear. Peter declared
- 31:32he would never deny Christ. And then you find
- 31:37him three times denying him. Yet Peter was martyred
- 31:44for Christ. There are many. They started out,
- 31:49yes, in adventure, I'm going to do great things.
- 31:53They ended in fear. But I want to say to you,
- 31:55if you've had fear in your life, you've got to
- 31:59do it. Psalm 107 says to do in verse 28. You
- 32:04cry out to the Lord in your trouble. And he brought
- 32:07them out of their distress. He stilled the storm
- 32:11to a whisper. The waves of the sea were hushed.
- 32:15They were glad when it grew calm. And he guided
- 32:18them to their desired haven. For many of you,
- 32:22this was you. You lived a life of fear until
- 32:25you found safe harbor in Christ. Some of you
- 32:30are here today, and you need safe harbor. Christ
- 32:35is here for you to cry out to in trouble. And
- 32:40so, I believe that courageous adventures are
- 32:44hidden somewhere in every heart. So if that is
- 32:48you, if you have been the fearful one that Jesus
- 32:50brought out, we heed verse 31. Let them give
- 32:55thanks to the Lord for his unfailing love. and
- 32:59his wonderful deeds for mankind. Let them exalt
- 33:03him in the assembly of the people and praise
- 33:06him in the council of the elders. Isn't that
- 33:08interesting? What an intimidating place. I remember
- 33:12when I was being ordained, having to preach to
- 33:14our presbytery and our superintendent. I was
- 33:17so intimidated and fearful in that moment. And
- 33:20I finally had to say, forget it. They need the
- 33:23gospel just like everybody else, so I'm going
- 33:24to preach it. I had to get rid of that intimidation
- 33:28and that fear. And I think it's interesting here
- 33:30that that's what this verse, it says, exalt him
- 33:35in the assembly of the people and in the council
- 33:38of the elders. You would never think that you
- 33:41could do that. But you're not a person of fear
- 33:45anymore. So you can declare and exalt the Lord.
- 33:50And so today my question for you is what is your
- 33:54trouble? What is your trouble? What was your
- 33:59trouble? What did God do for you when you cried
- 34:03out to him? We need to remember our blessings
- 34:06today. We need to call to mind what God has done
- 34:11for us. And maybe, just maybe, you need to cry
- 34:17out to him today. Maybe today you're the distressed
- 34:22wanderer, searching, hungry, and thirsty. Maybe
- 34:28you're the darkness dweller. The darkness has
- 34:32such a hold on you. Your chains have such a hold
- 34:35on you. Can I say he wants to deliver you? You
- 34:39don't have to walk out of here in darkness and
- 34:42in chains. You can leave them at the feet of
- 34:44Jesus today. Maybe you've been the rebellious
- 34:49one needing to bow in humility to your Lord.
- 34:56Maybe you're the fearful one needing to lift
- 34:59your gaze to the one who does wondrous deeds
- 35:02on behalf of man. Maybe, just maybe, it's you
- 35:11today and you need to cry out. We're going to
- 35:15be celebrating communion in a moment, the table
- 35:17of the Lord. And we celebrate open communion.
- 35:22As long as you profess Jesus to be Lord of your
- 35:26life, you are welcome to participate in communion.
- 35:30But before we take communion, I just want to
- 35:33give a moment of opportunity for you. If this
- 35:38is you and you're saying, today I need to make
- 35:42that decision. Today I need to invite the Savior
- 35:45into my life. We want to make room for you today.
- 35:51And so here's what we're going to do. We're going
- 35:56to take a moment and we're just going to all
- 35:59of us bow our heads, close our eyes. I'm not
- 36:03going to ask anybody to come up right now. But
- 36:07I want us just for a moment to quietly before
- 36:09the Lord. If this is what Christ has done for
- 36:14you, I want you just to call to mind the beginning.
- 36:20I want you to... Call to mind the glory of what
- 36:24he has brought you out of. And if you need to
- 36:30do that today, I want you just to begin to tell
- 36:33the Lord, Lord, I need you. I'm crying out just
- 36:39like in Psalm 107. They cried out to the Lord
- 36:43in their time of distress. Today I'm calling
- 36:47out, I'm crying out to you in my distress. And
- 36:52if that's you, while everybody's got their heads
- 36:55bowed, I want you just to lift your hand up so
- 36:58I can pray with you this morning. Today is your
- 37:01day to be courageous and to lift up that hand
- 37:05and say yes to the Lord. I see one hand over
- 37:10here. Anybody else before we move on? Maybe you're
- 37:15saying he's done that for me once, but I've let
- 37:18those old things back in my life. And I need
- 37:22to renew my commitment. I need to renew that
- 37:27relationship. Yeah, lift your hand in the back.
- 37:30Others, here's what we're going to do today.
- 37:34We're going to just all of us pray this prayer.
- 37:38As one whole congregation, I want you just to
- 37:41repeat after me. Heavenly Father, I come to you
- 37:46as a sinner in need of a Savior. I believe that
- 37:53Jesus Christ is the Son of God and the Savior
- 38:00of the world. Today, I make Jesus Lord of my
- 38:05life. I believe you died so I could be forgiven
- 38:12and rose again to give me life. I receive this
- 38:20new life. This is my new beginning. I am a child
- 38:27of God. Amen. Amen. Praise the Lord. Praise the
- 38:35Lord. I'm just going to say this here. If you
- 38:39still have chains that you are carrying and need
- 38:44somebody to pray with you, don't leave this place
- 38:46at the end of service. We have elders that would
- 38:49love to pray with you this morning. And so today,
- 38:54we're concluding with a time of communion. We've
- 38:59got some of our leaders and our pastors that
- 39:01are going to help us. And so if you guys would
- 39:04head over to your stations. What we're doing,
- 39:08our response time today, is this time of communion.
- 39:14It's saying, I remember, I remember Christ, what
- 39:17you have done for me. As we take this bread that
- 39:22represents the body of Christ, I receive it remembering
- 39:27that your body was broken for my brokenness.
- 39:32I receive it knowing that I cannot sustain my
- 39:35own life. I need the bread of life to sustain
- 39:39me. And as we dip this bread in this cup, we're
- 39:45acknowledging and we're remembering that it is
- 39:47the blood of Jesus that has cleansed us and washed
- 39:52us and set a new covenant in place, a covenant
- 39:57of peace, a covenant of grace. And so as we move
- 40:03toward communion this morning, I want you to
- 40:07do it prayerfully. I want you to do it beginning
- 40:11to give thanks to God for what he has brought
- 40:13you out of. I want us to not take for granted
- 40:17what he has given to us, the miraculous provision.
- 40:21We don't want to be like the Israelites. We don't
- 40:25want to be like manna again, God. We want to
- 40:30say thank you, God. for your provision. Thank
- 40:34you for what you have sustained me in life. We're
- 40:40going to remember what the Lord has done. Our
- 40:44lives aren't going to be the graves of the greedy,
- 40:46right? They're going to be places full of thanksgiving
- 40:52and gratitude, which is the language of the kingdom
- 40:57of God. Gratitude and thankfulness. And so I'm
- 41:02going to invite you to stand with me this morning.
- 41:06The team is going to lead us in worship, and
- 41:08as we do, I'm going to invite you to communion.
- 41:12This here, Lila's going to start off this section.
- 41:15You're going to go back to Dan and Linda. This
- 41:19section, Gary's going to start you off over here,
- 41:22and you'll make your way forward. You guys are
- 41:25going to, your sections are going to come up
- 41:27here. David, you're going to start them back
- 41:29there to Dennis and Linda. And so as you do,
- 41:33let's just worship the Lord. Receive your communion
- 41:36and then find a place worshiping at the feet
- 41:40of Jesus for a few moments this morning. Make
- 41:43the declaration, I'm living my life at the feet
- 41:47of Jesus. This is who I am. This is how I live,
- 41:51full of gratitude and thankfulness. Amen? Amen.
