- 0:00Speaker 1: Welcome back to ACC Football Addiction. Got a treat for
- 0:03Speaker 1: you guys today. Eric McLean to talk about your team.
- 0:06Speaker 1: We appreciate him for his time. We appreciate prize picks
- 0:09Speaker 1: where all new users get $ 150 instantly when they win
- 0:12Speaker 1: their first $ 5 lineup using code HMA.
- 0:15Speaker 2: Here's Eric. All that.
- 0:16Speaker 1: Let's go to the Seminoles for just a minute and
- 0:17Speaker 1: then we'll get you out of here. But start with
- 0:19Speaker 1: New Mexico State. Obviously, you would expect a really good result.
- 0:23Speaker 2: They're on in week zero.
- 0:25Speaker 1: And of course, all the things you want to see,
- 0:26Speaker 1: you know, effort, which I don't think was a problem
- 0:28Speaker 1: last year, but effort and execution. And how does a
- 0:30Speaker 1: new quarterback look? But then you've got SMU week one.
- 0:34Speaker 1: And I, my pick.
- 0:36Speaker 2: To see Miami and Charlotte is SMU.
- 0:38Speaker 1: I think it largely is going to come down to
- 0:40Speaker 1: what happens in that SMU Louisville game. in week three,
- 0:42Speaker 1: which is a sneaky underrated game for the season.
- 0:45Speaker 2: Um, that's in Dallas. So I'm going with them.
- 0:47Speaker 1: If it was in Louisville, I'd probably go the other way,
- 0:49Speaker 1: but I think SMU is incredibly talented. And how do you,
- 0:53Speaker 1: I worry about Jennings is the a hundred percent where,
- 0:56Speaker 1: where is he at? But what do you think about
- 0:58Speaker 1: that SMU Florida state matchup on Labor Day in Doak?
- 1:01Speaker 3: No, it's huge, man. And the huddle is going to
- 1:03Speaker 3: be there. Uh, cannot wait to see that game in
- 1:06Speaker 3: person Monday night, We've got great coverage coming that entire
- 1:10Speaker 3: day leading into that game, halftime and, of course, postgame.
- 1:14Speaker 3: First of all, the stadium needs to be electric, and
- 1:16Speaker 3: I'm sure it will be. All the great additions that
- 1:19Speaker 3: Alford and company have made to that thing. I got
- 1:21Speaker 3: to see that last year early in the season. It
- 1:24Speaker 3: is tremendous. And what a game day experience that has
- 1:27Speaker 3: only been enhanced. That's a ton of fun there. So that,
- 1:31Speaker 3: first of all, needs to be that. The best– Defense
- 1:35Speaker 3: is having that 12 guy out there with you when
- 1:37Speaker 3: you're facing an electric quarterback like Florida State will be
- 1:40Speaker 3: doing against Kevin Jennings. How can the crowd manipulate pressure?
- 1:44Speaker 3: Can it help with causing chaos? And then those guys
- 1:48Speaker 3: delivering out on the field. Obviously, you have to contain
- 1:51Speaker 3: that guy. When he gets on the edges, not only
- 1:54Speaker 3: is he a threat to run and kill you with
- 1:56Speaker 3: his legs, but he's going to extend plays as long
- 1:58Speaker 3: as he can and keep those eyes downfield. So how
- 2:00Speaker 3: do you contain him? How do you keep him in
- 2:01Speaker 3: the pocket? Try to hit him as much as you
- 2:04Speaker 3: can there And then just offensively, like you said, I'm
- 2:07Speaker 3: higher on Florida State than a lot of people. I'm
- 2:10Speaker 3: not sure where you stand, but I like Ashton Daniels
- 2:12Speaker 3: a lot. I think he is a great fit for
- 2:15Speaker 3: this offense, for what Mike Norvell wants to do, the
- 2:18Speaker 3: versatility with his legs, how good he can be. as
- 2:22Speaker 3: a runner, but also a passer. And, and I know
- 2:24Speaker 3: people want us to look at the box scores and say, well,
- 2:26Speaker 3: look at all these turnovers.
- 2:27Speaker 2: Look at all these pigs.
- 2:28Speaker 3: My man, a lot of that was at Stanford.
- 2:30Speaker 2: Okay.
- 2:31Speaker 3: You and I would try to throw those pigs too.
- 2:32Speaker 2: Cause we're just trying to do anything we can to win.
- 2:34Speaker 2: And I think six of.
- 2:35Speaker 3: Them were against Clemson. Like they're bouncing off dude's face
- 2:38Speaker 3: mask right into Clemson sands. And it's just like, Oh,
- 2:40Speaker 3: this is great. You know? So, so I think there's
- 2:43Speaker 3: more to it than just looking at that number. And
- 2:45Speaker 3: I like this receiver room and running back room a lot.
- 2:47Speaker 3: That's going to help everybody involved. Like the, the offense is,
- 2:51Speaker 3: from a top of the order starters, first team type deal,
- 2:56Speaker 3: I feel very good about. And the fact that Mike
- 2:58Speaker 3: Norvell is back to calling play. So I think that
- 3:01Speaker 3: is going to be a tremendous battle for SMU and
- 3:04Speaker 3: just testing them. Like they were the worst pass defense
- 3:07Speaker 3: in the ACC, one of the worst in the country
- 3:09Speaker 3: a year ago. I am testing that maybe from the
- 3:12Speaker 3: first snap and throwing it as deep as I can
- 3:15Speaker 3: to deuce and seeing what happens.
- 3:17Speaker 2: I think Florida State will be improved year over year.
- 3:21Speaker 1: I think what is tough for me is that Florida
- 3:24Speaker 1: State plays six of the top seven teams. When you
- 3:28Speaker 1: look at the ACC odds, they play eight of the
- 3:30Speaker 1: top nine. When you look at the vote or nine,
- 3:33Speaker 1: seven of the top eight.
- 3:34Speaker 2: I'm sorry.
- 3:34Speaker 1: When you look at it the way that it was voted,
- 3:36Speaker 1: which I know our votes don't mean a lot, but
- 3:38Speaker 1: just the perception is this is a really tough schedule.
- 3:40Speaker 1: You got two really tough out of conference games, but
- 3:42Speaker 1: I do. I expect the offense to be better. I
- 3:44Speaker 1: think the defense is better in year two under Tony White.
- 3:47Speaker 1: The problem or the issue might be you could be
- 3:50Speaker 1: markedly better and play a much tougher schedule and only
- 3:53Speaker 1: win one or two more games.
- 3:55Speaker 3: And that's such a great point. Let me ask you
- 3:57Speaker 3: this from the like from the Florida State perception you
- 4:03Speaker 3: know that you only win seven games you know that
- 4:06Speaker 3: what does that mean moving forward.
- 4:09Speaker 1: I think it would be it's two-sided one it would
- 4:13Speaker 1: be improvement and you would understand where you're at I
- 4:16Speaker 1: think do they though do they do they an overarching
- 4:19Speaker 1: perspective would be you should never be at a place
- 4:22Speaker 1: like Florida State you should never be.
- 4:26Speaker 2: In a situation where SMU is a game or Louisville
- 4:29Speaker 2: is a game.
- 4:29Speaker 1: Or like that, that should be the, the perception is like, yeah,
- 4:35Speaker 1: you played a tough schedule, but this shouldn't be a
- 4:37Speaker 1: tough schedule for Florida state. Now it couldn't be more
- 4:40Speaker 1: difficult than normal.
- 4:41Speaker 2: That's fine.
- 4:42Speaker 1: But we should never be in a situation where you're
- 4:44Speaker 1: looking at NC state and Virginia and thinking, man, I
- 4:47Speaker 1: don't know if we're going to get out of that one.
- 4:48Speaker 1: You know, like the expectation should be higher for a
- 4:51Speaker 1: year in year in itself. Seven wins would not be
- 4:55Speaker 1: bad against this schedule. Appreciate Alumni Hall for their support.
- 4:59Speaker 1: We want to encourage you to use our code CFA15
- 5:01Speaker 1: to save 15% on your order at alumnihall.com or in person,
- 5:06Speaker 1: in store. Code works either way. CFA15 didn't sign you
- 5:10Speaker 1: up for anything. Just saves you a little money on
- 5:11Speaker 1: that gear you're buying for your favorite team anyway. Appreciate
- 5:14Speaker 1: Alumni Hall for their support. Go check them out.
- 5:16Speaker 2: But if you're getting to.
- 5:17Speaker 1: A point where that's where it's at, that's where I
- 5:20Speaker 1: think you have a problem.
- 5:21Speaker 3: It'll be brilliant just to see how that's a value.
- 5:24Speaker 3: And maybe you're not in that situation. Listen, I think
- 5:27Speaker 3: eight wins is kind of the minimum that we should
- 5:30Speaker 3: be aiming for here. So and we'll see, you know,
- 5:33Speaker 3: if you don't get to that, then there's, you know, unfortunately,
- 5:35Speaker 3: decisions that have to be made.
- 5:36Speaker 2: We'll see.
- 5:37Speaker 1: If you get to eight against this schedule and I
- 5:40Speaker 1: think that's, I think that's not bad. And if you
- 5:42Speaker 1: could somehow get to nine or more, right. If you
- 5:44Speaker 1: get to nine, shoot, you're in playoff discussions in November in,
- 5:47Speaker 1: in some respects.
- 5:48Speaker 3: Right.
- 5:49Speaker 1: So I do think going back to the SMU game,
- 5:52Speaker 1: to me, that's such a linchpin game. Because if you
- 5:55Speaker 1: win that, you're starting 2-0 and you're going to Bama
- 5:57Speaker 1: with a little bit of confidence. Even if you lose
- 5:59Speaker 1: to Bama, you come home and you get the win
- 6:01Speaker 1: against Central Arkansas. You're 3-1. You play Virginia the next week.
- 6:04Speaker 1: I think if you beat.
- 6:05Speaker 2: SMU, you can beat Virginia. So you're talking about a
- 6:08Speaker 2: 4-1 start.
- 6:08Speaker 1: I mean, you're talking about a ranked team by the
- 6:11Speaker 1: time they start getting into the meat of their schedule
- 6:13Speaker 1: playing Miami and others. Now, I still think Miami's ahead
- 6:16Speaker 1: of you. But if you beat SMU, there's no reason
- 6:18Speaker 1: you can't go on the road and beat Louisville. There's
- 6:20Speaker 1: no reason you can't go beat Clemson. There's no reason
- 6:22Speaker 1: that NC State is a certain loss or anything like that. So,
- 6:26Speaker 1: but if you conversely, you drop to SMU, then you
- 6:29Speaker 1: drop to Bama and only two wins or those two,
- 6:32Speaker 1: then I think you're looking at the rest of the
- 6:33Speaker 1: schedule and you're.
- 6:34Speaker 2: Saying, to.
- 6:38Speaker 1: Me, Florida state could do itself such a favor by
- 6:41Speaker 1: repeating what happened last year on labor day weekend.
- 6:43Speaker 2: The crowd brings it. They impact the game.
- 6:45Speaker 1: They upset somebody because SMU is a slight favorite right now.
- 6:49Speaker 2: And they pick up a huge win.
- 6:50Speaker 1: Again, as tough as I think the schedule is, I've
- 6:53Speaker 1: got SMU number two power rated in this conference. If
- 6:56Speaker 1: you beat number two, you could beat anybody else on
- 6:58Speaker 1: your schedule.
- 6:58Speaker 2: No doubt. That's where I think it becomes so important.
- 7:01Speaker 2: I'm with you. Come on.
- 7:02Speaker 3: Let's go do it.
- 7:03Speaker 2: I'm hyping myself up. I'm going to be ready to
- 7:05Speaker 2: run out there.
- 7:06Speaker 3: I'm with you, baby.
- 7:08Speaker 2: I would like to see it work out for Mike.
- 7:10Speaker 2: Last thing on Daniels.
- 7:11Speaker 1: Again, people will like to point to the turnovers. I
- 7:15Speaker 1: just watched Kurt Cignetti bring over a turnover per and
- 7:17Speaker 1: quarter in Indiana.
- 7:18Speaker 3: Right.
- 7:19Speaker 2: And I'm not calling Mike or anybody else. Kurt Cignetti.
- 7:21Speaker 2: He's kind of one of one.
- 7:23Speaker 1: But if we can get anything close to Auburn, Ashton
- 7:27Speaker 1: Daniels and not Stanford, Ashton Daniels, which was his most
- 7:30Speaker 1: recent stop.
- 7:31Speaker 2: You're not asking. It's not an Uyungle situation where you're
- 7:33Speaker 2: asking to go back four years.
- 7:35Speaker 1: Right.
- 7:36Speaker 2: Clemson shout shout out there.
- 7:38Speaker 3: Shout-out DJ destroying two programs, dude. Shout-out DJ destroying two programs.
- 7:42Speaker 2: Two ACC programs, too. Boy, the lies. I told myself
- 7:46Speaker 2: that looking at the Oregon State box score. Gosh, if
- 7:49Speaker 2: I could have that offseason back.
- 7:52Speaker 1: If you can get Ashton closer to what he did,
- 7:55Speaker 1: the Ashton that had Bama on the ropes at the
- 7:57Speaker 1: end of the year, if you get that, this offense
- 7:59Speaker 1: has a chance to be even better than it was
- 8:00Speaker 1: last year, and it was really good last year.
- 8:02Speaker 3: That's what's around him. It's not what was at Stanford, right?
- 8:06Speaker 3: It's much closer. to what was at Auburn and maybe
- 8:08Speaker 3: just as good, you know, depending on who you ask.
- 8:10Speaker 3: I mean, Auburn didn't have deuce. Okay. They didn't have
- 8:13Speaker 3: a six, six freaking Wolverine out there.
- 8:15Speaker 2: Just catching anything.
- 8:16Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 8:17Speaker 2: That's what I'm saying.
- 8:18Speaker 3: So I tend to think we are going to get
- 8:21Speaker 3: that best version and that's what I'm excited for.
- 8:24Speaker 1: Eric, you mentioned some of the things you guys have
- 8:26Speaker 1: going on. Where can people catch you? I know you
- 8:28Speaker 1: do your pod too, but like where, where can people
- 8:30Speaker 1: get all of that?
- 8:30Speaker 3: Yeah. I appreciate it, man. Gramlich and McLean always we'll
- 8:33Speaker 3: be ramping it up next week. Cannot wait. Kelly and
- 8:36Speaker 3: I have so much fun just breaking down this conference.
- 8:39Speaker 3: And then this weekend, man, the ACC huddle. We'll have
- 8:41Speaker 3: ACC PM Friday night, some SportsCenter stuff Friday night, and
- 8:45Speaker 3: then our show 10 a.m. Saturday morning, first one, with
- 8:49Speaker 3: the Hoos there and with the Wolfpack in Virginia. So
- 8:52Speaker 3: cannot wait, man. Football is freaking back, and we're sprinting
- 8:56Speaker 3: full speed ahead.
- 8:57Speaker 1: Dude, I could not be more jacked. I'll be in
- 8:59Speaker 1: Tallahassee this weekend, but then I'll see you in 9, 10,
- 9:01Speaker 1: 11 days, whatever it is.
- 9:02Speaker 2: That's right. Tallahassee on Monday night. So we appreciate you,
- 9:05Speaker 2: but a ton for taking, taking some time. Thank you, brother.
- 9:08Speaker 2: Cannot thank Eric enough for his time.
- 9:09Speaker 1: He's a busy man, college football seasons ramping up and
- 9:12Speaker 1: we are getting going here in just a few days,
- 9:14Speaker 1: but make sure that you are subscribed not only to
- 9:17Speaker 1: his show, but also here to ACC football addiction. Appreciate
- 9:20Speaker 1: price picks where all new users get $ 150 instantly when
- 9:24Speaker 1: they win their first $ 5 lineup using code HMA. See
- 9:26Speaker 1: you guys on the next one.
