- 0:08On Saturday, October 7, 1950, the Philadelphia Phillies faced the New York Yankees at Yankee
- 0:13Stadium in Game 4 of the 1950 World Series. The Yankees led the series 3-0 after winning
- 0:19three consecutive nail-biting, one-run games. Game 3 featured a dramatic finish with an
- 0:24unearned run in the bottom of the 8th inning, tying the game. This was followed by an RBI
- 0:29single by Jerry Coleman in the bottom of the 9th, giving the Yankees a commanding series
- 0:34lead. For Game 4, the Phillies sent Bob Miller to the mound to face the Yankees' rookie pitcher,
- 0:39Whitey Ford. The audio recording is from the radio broadcast featuring announcers Mel
- 0:44Allen and Gene Kelly.
- 0:46Well after his near fatal plane accident, coming back from football game last Saturday,
- 0:53Bill DeCosta supervising field engineer for Mutual and Lou Jurgensen at the controls
- 0:57of the engineering department. And down in Philadelphia, on the controls at that end
- 1:02were Frank Pant, Del Dengate and Allen Smith. Our sincere appreciation to all those people
- 1:09for making it so easy for Al Helper, yours truly, Mel Allen, and the man who's forced
- 1:14you over the first four and a half innings today to do such an easy job. I'm talking
- 1:19about a fellow who's celebrated his 32nd birthday yesterday and he was just a little superstitious
- 1:25because the game wound up 3 and 2. But Gene, any time being 2, make 32. That's something
- 1:32I have to learn, always talk to you in May 5. Gene Kelly.
- 1:37Thank you Mel, and of course you'll note that the Phillies are wearing number 19. Towards
- 1:43one game happens, and a 9 innings, regulation distance game. It is interesting as well to
- 1:48point out that no one team has scored more than one run in any one inning, compositely
- 1:54speaking, of the games played. And we had one 10 innings at play. The first inning has
- 1:59been scoreless, and that is all. The Phillies have been held scoreless in the first four
- 2:04innings of the first three games, and the Yankees have posted singles in the second,
- 2:08third, and fourth while the Phillies have had a tendency to score late. But the Yankees
- 2:13a little bit later to the tune of enjoy yourself Phillies, it's later than you think, while
- 2:18their late rallies in the last two games have won out for them. DiMaggio's home run in the
- 2:23second game with Shy Park in Philadelphia, and of course yesterday in the ninth inning.
- 2:28Jerry Coleman, now the hitting star. One of the two Massachusetts citizens involved in
- 2:37this World Series classic, Eddie Wachis, is about to step in to face the left-hand O'Fighty
- 2:434. The field scouts, George Earnshaw and Jack Sandford. Earnshaw of course, the former
- 2:49athletic grade and Sandford Toronto manager, have had nothing but high regard for this
- 2:53chunky Southlaw who faced the field first in spring training. He had hurt his arm then.
- 2:57He's set for the first pitch. Here it comes, and it's low outside ball one. Wachis had
- 3:02lunged to his own right that time as if to pump a bunch down the third baseline or drag.
- 3:08In the series, Eddie is hitting 250. Three hits in 12 trips. One a double. The pitch,
- 3:15outside and low, ball two. Both Ford and his opponent Miller are very confident youngsters.
- 3:22I believe you heard Mel say the other day that Ford asked his dean, is that the kind
- 3:27of play they have in the National League. Two and no pitch. Strike one is all. Two and
- 3:40one. First man up. Out of the first. Left-hand of Ford in motion. The livers, Wigg just cuts
- 3:47sand, gets the end of the wood on the ball for a foul just to the right of his own dugout
- 3:53to even it up at two and two. The fields have brought along three bad boys. Ken Bush, Cranky
- 4:02Campanero and Steve Arlasco. Three youngsters who didn't have much of a break too early
- 4:07in life and have been brought along by the Phillips Club. So the bad boys and ball
- 4:10boys in their home park have done a grand job. Two and two. A curve that is too close
- 4:16for ball three. It was a real, real hook that time. What's thrown too close to the body
- 4:22of Wachis. He stands up there with his right foot poised for the first baseline. Left foot
- 4:27deep on the line as the left-handed batter chokes up about three inches. The string runs
- 4:31out on the first batter. Twenty-four in the big pitch delivers. Five of all four and
- 4:36Wigg just is on the lead off wall. I think the tenor of the crowd fans will bear out
- 4:43this afternoon that the fields are tremendous sentimental favorites. If not, a predominant
- 4:49actual and logical favorites. Boy, they are now free down and no club has ever come from
- 4:56behind to this extent to win out on a World Series. The closest, of course, the Giants
- 5:01two down in 1921 and earlier before the Roaring 20s the Pittsburgh parts who were down three
- 5:07one. A man on first that he wickets with a walk about is Richie Ashburn batting left
- 5:11handed. He swings and there's a flipper to short left field but Woodling plays him shallow
- 5:16comes in and makes it to play. Fortunately that time the defense was alert to the fact
- 5:21that Ashburn is a straightaway hitter who sprays hits and he was very, very shallow in left
- 5:26field and makes a put out. One down put out goes to the left field. Ashburn swinging on
- 5:33the first pitch and about an hour is Woodling putting headjumps. In the three previous games
- 5:40the third baseman of the field is two for ten. Hitting at even two hundred batting right
- 5:44handed. Wigg is leading off first. Young Ford in the stretch delivers. Low wall one. A curve
- 5:51that was aimed right towards the middle of the strike zone but broke below the knee. One
- 5:57and oh. In field and double play depth. Is it all leading the march on the end of the
- 6:03fence. Ford ready throws. Right one ball. Now his hook was very similar to the one that
- 6:10he had tossed at John's in his initial pitch but this one was aimed just above the knee.
- 6:17One ball. One strike. One down. One on. Top of the first. No score. The Phillies batting.
- 6:21In the fourth game of the world series against the world champion. New York Yankees. The
- 6:25left handed pitchers. Jones swings. As the ball hits toward the right field corner. It
- 6:29is in there. And bounces into the stands for ground rule double. Wigg is held at third
- 6:34and Jones is a second. That ball was some thirty feet just inside the right field pole
- 6:42line which is two hundred ninety six feet from home plate. And the ground rule here at
- 6:47the stadium where the fences are very low especially in dead right and dead left is that
- 6:51if it bounces in it's automatically a ground rule double. You don't take any extra bases
- 6:56if you are the runner at the time. At the hitter gets his double so that Wigg is now
- 7:00at third and Jones is on at second. Jones is first extra base of the series. And a sixth
- 7:09field double. The batter is Dale Henneth who picked up his first world series against
- 7:15yesterday. The full wind up on the left hand of four. High and wide on the curve. Balls
- 7:19in the right handed batter. Ball one. On third Wigg. On second. Well he Jones. Base
- 7:31on balls has proven extremely detrimental. The pitchers on both sides in the series.
- 7:37One ball no strikes. The pitch to Winnett. Wide and high. Ball two. He is pitching extremely
- 7:42carefully to Winnett. Or Dale is the long ball hitter on this ball club. Lefty Joe Astofsky.
- 7:50The technical professor of the Yankee relief score acquired from the St. Louis Browns in
- 7:57mid year has begun warming up for the Yankees in their alley in right field. Two and nothing
- 8:03but pitch. He throws. Wide. Ball three. This is the earliest real threat that the field
- 8:11has staged. On the first day they were sit down on order. On the second day Ashburn had
- 8:24a double with one away. Strike one ball. Three and one. That was right down the middle. On
- 8:33the second and third top of the first inning. The police determined not to be blanked in
- 8:38the series. Often running against the star rookie of the Yankee Mount Corps. 24. The
- 8:46infield is off the dock. The outfield is pushed for the left and fairly deep. Three one pitch.
- 8:51Two swings. A high chopping ground wall. Plays for the plate. He is out. Third to catch it.
- 9:01Ground to be ra. A chopping ground wall that was just inside the line a third base. And
- 9:07Doc Bob Brown. Had tremendous series. For the past two years. Immediately got rid of
- 9:14it. A perfect. Take a good body block of the plate by Vera. Retired on, there was no chance
- 9:19There's no chance for the double player to start with first base open and runners on at second and third.
- 9:25That's the second out.
- 9:26And again, a filled chance at the plate is rubbed out with a compactly filled barrel making sure they didn't have the runner.
- 9:34The runner at third, wakers his way off with a crack on the bat, but he was a dead pigeon.
- 9:39Goal scored, third to catch him on the field of choice, and it's at first.
- 9:42Jones at second, the batter picks this way.
- 9:44Left handed swinger.
- 9:46Strike one, four.
- 9:48Crossfire pass ball making the outside corner just above an ease.
- 9:52Two gone.
- 9:56Jones at second.
- 9:58And it's at first.
- 10:01Alert Yankee Fielding. They have not committed an error as yet in the series.
- 10:07Pitching a swing off the umpire's mat, and it ripped the mat loose.
- 10:13The portion of the strap, which commences at the forward, goes to the mate of an X.
- 10:20Tears itself loose for umpire Charlie Berry.
- 10:23And it's time for the competitive.
- 10:26And a former catcher in the American League as well as a great football player in college.
- 10:30And again, we say Phillipsburg, New Jersey is proud of this participant in the World Series.
- 10:36I note now that the story has a brand new mat, and it didn't take any time at all for the Yankee bat boy to replace it for him.
- 10:42The count is nothing in two on Dick Sissler.
- 10:45One hit in 13 trips in the World Series.
- 10:48He singles home run yesterday.
- 10:50Board in the stretch.
- 10:51Kick delivers.
- 10:52Too close on the curve ball, backing him away.
- 10:54Ball one.
- 10:56One ball, two strikes.
- 10:58Jones at second, and it's at first.
- 11:00Game began when Wacoos drew a pass, Ashburn with a hit on on,
- 11:05and he's tied to short left, and Jones doubles, ground rule style, ball bouncing into the right field stand.
- 11:13One or two.
- 11:15Six three, ball out.
- 11:17A punch ball, and it's on the outside corner.
- 11:20And Sissler again goes down on strike for Dick's fifth strikeout in the World Series.
- 11:26He has the dubious to sink in the leading the pack in that department.
- 11:29No runs, one hit, a double by Jones, a walk thrown in, no Yankee errors, two fills left.
- 11:35At the end of the first half of the first, nothing to nothing, but Billy's at New York.
- 11:40Men who use a Gillette super speed raiser, shade quicker and far more enjoyably than ever.
- 11:45For a mighty good reason.
- 11:47The Gillette super speed raiser changes blades instantly, cleans instantly, and never jams or clogs.

- 12:26And listen to this, you get the complete set, an actual $1.75 annual, for only a dollar.
- 12:33Ask for yours at your favorite store.
- 12:38Ready to go on the Yankee half of the first inning.
- 12:41Bob Miller.
- 12:45Miller has had a peculiar ailment.
- 12:48He had Scarlett's fever as a youngster, and his perforation glands never worked correctly in his hands.
- 12:55He has to wet his hands under the water cooler before each game to make sure that the combination of water and rosin,
- 13:01give him the proper glue to hold onto that ball.
- 13:04One of the oddities of baseball, he leans forward in the old Disney style.
- 13:07He's a rangey, right-handed, faces Gene Woodling, delivers, and it strikes one ball, a fast ball.
- 13:14The girls had a great threat rolling in the first, but Ford forced Ennis to bounce the third and Brown put them out of the plate.
- 13:23They're a guarding.
- 13:26The ball once strikes out of Woodling, Gene hitting a 400 on the series.
- 13:31Low and away, ball one.
- 13:34Miller has a finger pitch, which dips down and slightly away from a left-handed batter.
- 13:39It can be compared favorably to a screwball, though this ball is thrown more naturally.
- 13:44It is at the end of a finger dip.
- 13:46It's the old-fashioned enduke that your youngsters used to have on the sand lines.
- 13:50One-on-one, swinging a ground ball right behind them out, over for Goliath.
- 13:54Woodling puts it and the runner is safe, but it may go as an infield hit.
- 14:04Waiting.
- 14:06They're chalking him with a bubble.
- 14:09Goliath is charged with an error.
- 14:11He came in behind them out and played the ball directly in front of the bag at second,
- 14:16but he lost the handle and Woodling is on with a life.
- 14:19It was a slow hit, while chopped behind them out.
- 14:22Manera on Goliath, the second baseman, the field.
- 14:26A great batter is the batter.
- 14:29The right-handed hitting shortstop takes a low curve of all while.
- 14:33Bill hitting a 200 in the first three games of the Wales series.
- 14:37He has two for ten and a run scored with two walks thrown in.
- 14:42One-on-one, him flashed on a Woodling at first base.
- 14:45Bill takes high inside, or two.
- 14:51Invariably, Miller has gotten off to rocky start this season.
- 14:55He has had a few exceptions in games recently pitched, and of course, as Mel told you,
- 15:00at the start of our broadcast, he came up with a sore right shoulder recently.
- 15:05A little bit of an overworked.
- 15:07He's been used in relief and shotting roles.
- 15:10He's now asking for a new ball and gets one from the plate on fire, Charlie Berry.
- 15:15Two-and-a-things are resudo.
- 15:17Nobody out for the Yankees last of the first,
- 15:20and the era on Goliath places Woodling at first.
- 15:26The stretch by Menon, he throws.
- 15:28Too close and low, ball three.
- 15:31Goliath's era was his first of the series and a fourth by the field.
- 15:39In the bullpen, we're about to get some activity.
- 15:42By the way, Robert has joined his bullpenmates,
- 15:45Gunstady, Meyer, and left-hander, Chaco Thompson.
- 15:50Today, so you can see that Zoya is not bearing the forces at all.
- 15:57Three-and-a-things out, the scooter is at all.
- 15:59A pitch, strike one ball, pass ball.
- 16:03Zoya has a big motion.
- 16:05He's a six-three and Benzomas way down to his knees with one foot forward,
- 16:10steering down for the side from his catcher anti-semitic.
- 16:14Third baseman, Jones, still shallow.
- 16:16Waco's guarding at first, Woodling leading off.
- 16:19Slow-toe over there, the guard gene, and he's back safely.
- 16:23So let's watch him closely.
- 16:26You've got a real runner out there at the plate as well.
- 16:29The stretcher on the three-one, for delivery.
- 16:31Swinging a foul, which cuts right back to a guard rail.
- 16:37The Yankee screen behind the plate is perhaps the smallest in height in the major league.
- 16:45The cord, which creates the screen for the balls back on, is very shallow
- 16:52and right before a microphone.
- 16:54And Staddy warming up for the filly.
- 16:57Zoya apparently is prepared to go early with his great, not only relief right hander,
- 17:04but the front of the prove that he could start and do well,
- 17:06though he lost to Rashi on the opening day, one-to-nothing.
- 17:09Full count to Phil Ruzudo.
- 17:11The runner breaks, Phil swings the ground wall, deep to the third,
- 17:14only one play, first base, so high but in time.
- 17:18And that ball almost got away from Eddie Waco.
- 17:21Jones cut it loose, side arm, and it blew up.
- 17:24But Waco's dancing master kept his foot on a bag for the put-on.
- 17:28The runner was off with a pitch, and Woodling lost the second base.
- 17:32He represents the scores of Potential, Honor, and Rock.
- 17:34That play went third to first, one down.
- 17:38Now Yogi Berra.
- 17:40Yogi's had difficulty hitting in the series, but his defensive work and handling of the pitchers has been great.
- 17:44Top notch.
- 17:46He has one hit in 11-trips in the three games, batting the padded.
- 17:50Swing a shot, single-clog right field.
- 17:53Here is Woodling rounding third, heading for the plate.
- 17:55The goal comes in from Ennis.
- 17:57It is not in time. He's safe.
- 18:00Yanki's lead, one-to-nothing.
- 18:03And now this series has witnessed runs scored in every inning by one team or the other.
- 18:11Berra held it first.
- 18:13Waco's safe.
- 18:15He's now cut off to the right of the plate as Ennis's throw came in well.
- 18:20But Woodling was off with a crack in the bat, and fast on the lead.
- 18:24He has split in safely well ahead of the throw.
- 18:26So Berra gets an RBI.
- 18:33His first silver series.
- 18:35A sharp single, which skidded on the turf just once and rolled sharply to right.
- 18:41Now for the time being, that run is unearned, but it must await the remainder of the inning.
- 18:51That's the second run that Woodling has scored in this series.
- 18:54There haven't been very many fellows going more than one.
- 18:56Here's the module, which plays tremendously a field.
- 19:00And of course his home run won the second game.
- 19:02The most curve is low and outside.
- 19:05So the Yankee clip, or football won.
- 19:07In this series, Joe is hitting an even 200.
- 19:13Two for ten.
- 19:14A Texas league single and a big home run the other day.
- 19:18One goal, no strikes.
- 19:19Quick throw to first.
- 19:20Berra is back.
- 19:22Yogi is not what might be called a speed merchant on the pass.
- 19:26But once he gets a start, he can really go down.
- 19:29One on nothing.
- 19:30Way wide.
- 19:31A wild fish getting away from Sendig.
- 19:32Moving to second base.
- 19:33Berra rounding second, heading to third.
- 19:35The big pass of all.
- 19:37No play.
- 19:38He's in there with a two base, wild fish.
- 19:43He was about to go into his slide.
- 19:48And when he saw that Sendig had no chance for what would have
- 19:53mattered to a tremendous throw, he was way back to the base of the
- 19:56screen behind the plate.
- 19:57He kept standing up on his own two feet.
- 20:01The counter course was two and all.
- 20:03The pitch was way wider than the plate in the dirt.
- 20:06And the Aggies are now set up well for their second run.
- 20:11A two base, wild fish.
- 20:16That is the first wild fish on the World Series.
- 20:24So now that Miller is in real hot water early in the game.
- 20:30The first two days of the situation that had to have been
- 20:33faced before.
- 20:34Two runs and one inning.
- 20:35Pitching to Marjole.
- 20:36Low ball free.
- 20:37Junction is having trouble.
- 20:40And of course the spark was ignited by the error committed by
- 20:46Goliath.
- 20:47The right side of the infielders shadow on to Marjole.
- 20:49The left side sees Berra take pretty good lead off third base.
- 20:53One away.
- 20:54One run in.
- 20:55And Miller calls time at the moment.
- 20:58And Joe steps up.
- 21:03Now the big wind up by the big right hander.
- 21:05He throws.
- 21:06Right one calls.
- 21:08Now he bent that one on a three and nothing pitch which shows
- 21:11that he has pretty good confidence that his turbo will get in there
- 21:14when he wants it to get in there.
- 21:16Particularly on three and nothing.
- 21:17So it is three and one.
- 21:21Winding.
- 21:22He pitches.
- 21:23A swing.
- 21:24And a line drive.
- 21:25The right field.
- 21:26In there for base hit.
- 21:27Here comes Berra.
- 21:28He scores.
- 21:29The Marjole round first goes to second.
- 21:30Here comes the throw.
- 21:31One and five.
- 21:32A double.
- 21:33Yankees lead two and nothing.
- 21:34And for the first time in the Wales series a team leads by more than one
- 21:46rock.
- 21:47Soya moves down to the dugout.
- 21:48And it appears it is all seeing now that he has had a runner at second base.
- 21:56Another at third after a single and a two base wild pitch and a double by the Marjole.
- 22:03He is going to waste no time in calling a pitcher in from the field bullpen.
- 22:16Making a leap over the short fence and left field is Jim Concetti.
- 22:21He will be making his third appearance in four days.
- 22:28On a public address system right now the announcer is telling the folks to take their
- 22:33coats off the railings.
- 22:34Particularly in dead ride and dead left field.
- 22:38The area incidentally where Willie Jones poked his double and then it went into the stand.
- 22:43And as well possibly sets up hitters who are facing that direction with a bad background.
- 22:51So here comes Professor Jim and the rookie right hander.
- 22:55He is off to one of his many rocky stars that is taking nothing away from the beetle-browed
- 23:02Miller.
- 23:03He might have been out of the city.
- 23:07Now Mel, I should imagine that with the Marjole's dettles, both runs may go as short as earned.
- 23:12Since Rosito's ground ball would have represented out number two and Barrett Singles moved to
- 23:19third on the wild pitch and the Marjole doubled.
- 23:23However we'll wait on that.
- 23:26In other words the inning isn't over yet.
- 23:29There is only one out and that's off of Bob Miller.
- 23:31He faced four runs and for the time being the first one is on earth.
- 23:36Woodling having reached first base on Goliath's era.
- 23:40So Jim and Staddy, the big professor, come to the know again in a virtual start.
- 23:46There is only one Yankee out of there and he'll be facing Johnny Myers with whom he's had
- 23:51no difficulty at all in the World Series.
- 23:54As a matter of fact, many onlookers find it tough to believe that can Staddy is equally
- 24:00effective against left handed swingers as he is against right handeders.
- 24:03But yesterday you'll remember that when handsome and walk free men enter all, when the Yankees
- 24:09brought home a tying run on Hamner's era, he was facing Bobby Brown who was set up as
- 24:14a pinch hitter for Hank Bauer.
- 24:16And it was Bauer who had doubled against Staddy on the opening day to set up the one run
- 24:21scored by either team.
- 24:23Myers is of course one of the greatest free swingers as the game has known in the last
- 24:2910 or 12 years.
- 24:31And he put in a bit for a home run yesterday hitting to the 344th footpark in right, but
- 24:38he dragged it down before it went into the stand.
- 24:41Now the situation is the module at second with a right field double, two runs in for the Yankee,
- 24:46one man out, and the batter John Myers batting left handed.
- 24:51And Staddy's outside screwball is ball one, throwing to the left handed batter.
- 24:57And Staddy now has pitched eight and one third innings in the World Series, allowing four hits
- 25:02and one iron run.
- 25:04He has walked four.
- 25:06Low inside to the stamping left handed header.
- 25:10Ball two.
- 25:12Johnny has put one hit in the World Series.
- 25:18Average actually 0-8-3.
- 25:20One for 12.
- 25:22Two balls, no strikes.
- 25:25And Staddy's low strategy checks the module, comes to the plate, strike one call.
- 25:30The curve ball.
- 25:32Jim very rarely calls his pitch a curve, it's the Staddy version of the slider.
- 25:38Two and one.
- 25:41The pitch, the swing, a shot foul for the lower deck in right.
- 25:46Now that's about as well as Myers is tagged of all in this series.
- 25:50His pitch for the home run yesterday was a very high fly with a lot of uppercut on it.
- 25:56This one was thrown around the chest or tore the eyes of the batter's hotel.
- 26:02And he wasted no time in bringing that batter out.
- 26:05It evens the counter two and two on Johnny Myers.
- 26:07On deck is Doc Bob Brown, one of the series heroes thus far.
- 26:11The pitch, a fly ball, hits the feet, go right and way upstairs.
- 26:18Now Lise tested the downstairs area.
- 26:21This time he hit under the ball upstairs and that ball was hit far and away but fouled by some 35s of 40 feet.
- 26:37Two and two, two ball in play.
- 26:39He pitches the swing, a ground ball to Goliath.
- 26:42Up with it, over to first in time.
- 26:46Goliath made sure he dripped that ball, he put his left knee behind it and then took his time to throw Lise out.
- 26:53Tamaggio moving to third on the play.
- 26:55That's for second out.
- 26:59Now the run must go as on earth.
- 27:02For Myers's ground ball, what have represented out number three?
- 27:05So no matter what happens now, anything that scores is on earth.
- 27:09Beyond the one run.
- 27:11Sooner or nothing, here is Bob Brown.
- 27:13The screw ball pitched away to the left handed swinging third baseman, ball one.
- 27:18Gillette's cavalcated sport, a Yankee two to nothing lead in the first inning.
- 27:22The field had a threat going and they wasted no time to the Yankees in derriking Bob Miller.
- 27:27The full wind up by Gonstaddy.
- 27:29Swings on the pitch, a ground is through the box, up with it, Goliath.
- 27:32Go to first in time, side retired.
- 27:34Second to first to play, Yankee first inning, two runs, one runs.
- 27:40Two hits, a single by Vera, a double by DiMaggio, an era by Goliath,
- 27:46and one man, Jota Margio, left on.
- 27:49First inning score from Yankee Stadium in New York.
- 27:52The Yankee two, the Phillies, nothing.
- 27:56We pause ten seconds for station identification.
- 27:59This is the mutual broadcasting system.
- 28:15Back at the stadium in New York, Rani Hanna, who was in Real Tears,
- 28:21as he plumped in front of his locker in the visitor's dressing room at the yesterday's ball game.
- 28:27But with it all, when Hanna had committed his era on Brown's Brown ball,
- 28:31with the bases loaded, in that eighth inning,
- 28:34the Pepperpot field shortstop, 23 years of age from Richmond, Virginia,
- 28:38doubled to deep left Centipede.
- 28:41It was only a great play for the second straight day by DiMaggio
- 28:46that prevented Hanna from going further,
- 28:48and possibly saving the ball game for the field's worth set down
- 28:51despite the leadoff double without a run in the ninth inning.
- 28:56So though his era stands out in the relief,
- 28:59Hanna brings a tremendous batting average into this ball game.
- 29:02He is hitting at 500 evens, five hits and ten trips, including a pair of doubles and a triple.
- 29:08He's batting right handed against fours, the left-hander throws.
- 29:11Hanna takes close at the toes, ball one, medium curve ball.
- 29:18One ball, no strikes. Nobody on, nobody out.
- 29:21Top of the second, Yankee two, the Phillies, nothing.
- 29:24So now, teams have scored in every inning in the series.
- 29:27The pitch, the swing, a ground ball, zipped to Razuto.
- 29:29He moves to his right, top of it, go to first in time.
- 29:33Nice play by the Scooter.
- 29:37Razuto, because he has second.
- 29:40Must teach himself a jump on the ball.
- 29:43Must be a second.
- 29:45Must teach himself a jump on the ball.
- 29:48And as soon as that ball leaves the bat,
- 29:51he has a sixth sense as to where it's going to depart.
- 29:56Play went short to first, one down.
- 29:58Now Andy Seminick, the catcher, two for seven.
- 30:04Two eighty-sixth batting average on the series, batting right handed.
- 30:07Strike one ball, left-hander came down with a tight-fisted pitch.
- 30:14One down, nobody on, nothing in one count.
- 30:17Top of the second, 24, delivers.
- 30:20Seminick, half-wing for take, slow inside, ball one.
- 30:25The two-base wild pitch was one of the key plays in the first inning.
- 30:31For New York, but of course that's chargeable to the pitcher.
- 30:36The era, set everything up.
- 30:42One ball, one strike.
- 30:46And the wind-up, four pitches.
- 30:49And the bat takes close, right at his felt line, inside, ball two.
- 30:58Two and one.
- 31:01Four, studies well.
- 31:04Into the big motion, delivers.
- 31:06Seminick swings, sends a high, quick-sting foul,
- 31:08is throwing it out of play,
- 31:09for the upper deck along the first-base line,
- 31:11just misses and falls down.
- 31:12It's deceptive here as to where the foul ball is going to land.
- 31:17The third deck, juts out as we told you yesterday.
- 31:20And the second deck is Wolf-Bagged.
- 31:22And it appears as though the upstairs patrons
- 31:24are glad to get themselves a chance
- 31:25for a fourth-game World Series souvenir.
- 31:28And then frustration.
- 31:29Downstairs she goes.
- 31:31Two and two.
- 31:36Four now, apparently settling down after a bat start.
- 31:39First inning though he held, the visitor scoreless.
- 31:42Yankee leading, two to nothing.
- 31:45He does.
- 31:47Outside for ball three.
- 31:49A curve that missed the mark.
- 31:52A low for the ease and too far outside.
- 31:55Full count.
- 32:00That is the rookie second full count.
- 32:02He walked wink as to the first inning.
- 32:03You recall?
- 32:04The string runs out.
- 32:06He's in the motion, he pitches.
- 32:07Seminick swings.
- 32:08An arching foul over the roof.
- 32:10Caught it.
- 32:11Downstairs again.
- 32:14Still three and two.
- 32:16First base dive.
- 32:18Score to the nothing Yankee.
- 32:20That's the first time either team has scored
- 32:22more than one deli in any one frame.
- 32:25The Sun now coming out more brilliantly.
- 32:26It's a bit more mild today than it was yesterday.
- 32:29Perhaps the best World Series weather.
- 32:32The full count again.
- 32:34Four throws.
- 32:35Seminick swings.
- 32:36And another foul.
- 32:37This is what Soya refers to as the batter
- 32:40giving the pitcher a battle.
- 32:42He may not be able to land full wood on the ball,
- 32:45but he gets just enough to spoil the good ones.
- 32:48And of course it means that much more strength
- 32:50taken out of the pitcher's arm.
- 32:52He's got to work harder, concentrate harder.
- 32:54For Seminick has an odd stance.
- 32:55Wide open.
- 32:56Toys toward the left, but he hits the ball well to right.
- 32:58I noticed that the foul is playing him pretty straight away out there.
- 33:00Three and two.
- 33:02Swinging a foul.
- 33:03Downstairs again.
- 33:04This one zips down a line.
- 33:05Into the stance.
- 33:07Along the first base line.
- 33:11Well, they're getting plenty of activity today,
- 33:13especially the customers in a box seat in short-ride fields.
- 33:19The ball in play by Empire Berry to the pitcher of 24,
- 33:2221-year-old left-hander.
- 33:24He's in the pumping motion.
- 33:26He kicks, he delivers.
- 33:27Seminick swings and gets the lazy foul.
- 33:30Clubbed off the handle behind the plate.
- 33:33Mera tosses over to Empire Berry,
- 33:35who looks it over, decides it's not good for Fodos,
- 33:38and throws you out of play, pretending a new one to four.
- 33:42Scoring Yankees two for at least nothing.
- 33:44A slow start.
- 33:45We're on the top of the second inning with one fill down.
- 33:48And they're grounding out to Residual short.
- 33:50And Seminick in a foul-off marathon right now.
- 33:54Three and two again.
- 33:56Time calls.
- 34:01Many times a pitcher will go into what is actually a bought motion,
- 34:04but since there's nobody on at the time,
- 34:07they'll never call it naturally.
- 34:09Three and two.
- 34:11A big pitch.
- 34:13Swing and another foul.
- 34:17This one back on the screen to the right of Argyllette's microphone.
- 34:30Three ball to Stankhout of Addisemmick.
- 34:34A rather controllable all the long way.
- 34:37Ready for the pitch again for throws.
- 34:39Seminick swings a chopping round ball on two hops taken by Residual.
- 34:42Go to first in 20-a-time by 30 feet.
- 34:45Two down.
- 34:46Short to first.
- 34:47Residual the busy B in this frame.
- 34:51Now Goliath.
- 34:53There has been a lot of talk.
- 34:56And second guessing today as to whether Goliath should have been taken out of the game yesterday.
- 35:01Goliath had two chances in the tenth-nineteenth.
- 35:07Goliath might have been a younger pitcher.
- 35:09Here he is again to start today.
- 35:11He takes strike one to all the curve.
- 35:13Going by the left-hand 0-54.
- 35:15In a series, Goliath is 2-10.
- 35:19Air singles are under the end or on score.
- 35:21Starting 200.
- 35:22And the right-handed slinger.
- 35:24Nothing in one pitch.
- 35:25Swing and another pitch.
- 35:27Swing and another pitch.
- 35:29Swing and another pitch.
- 35:31Two.
- 35:32With the old-fashioned hook.
- 35:36A well-to-strike.
- 35:38Perhaps getting 21-year-old butterflies settled out now.
- 35:42Looks like a canny veteran on a mound.
- 35:45Facing Goliath.
- 35:46He's in the motion.
- 35:47Throws.
- 35:48Goliath swings and gets a foul.
- 35:49Lazyed along the third base side of the diamond.
- 35:52Behind Soya coaching a third.
- 35:54Counter-plotted first.
- 35:55Dusty Cook.
- 35:56And her slide yanking.
- 35:58The series replete with Yankee's redition.
- 36:01Soya, brought up in their stools.
- 36:03Cooker for the Yankee himself.
- 36:05Nothing in two.
- 36:06Ready to pitch.
- 36:07The swing.
- 36:08A long fly ball.
- 36:09Lifted to our left.
- 36:10Woodling has the roll.
- 36:11Cam's under.
- 36:12Wait and squeezes for the third out.
- 36:15Goliath flies to left.
- 36:16Three up, three down.
- 36:17For the Phillies in the top of the second.
- 36:19No runs, no hits, no errors, none left.
- 36:21One and a half innings.
- 36:22The Yankees two.
- 36:23The Phillies nothing.
- 36:25Watching the game with us here in the broadcasting booth.
- 36:27Is my good friend Kurt Simmons.
- 36:29fellow Southpaw.
- 36:30The Philadelphia Phillies.
- 36:32Who's sold to the hills on Gillette's lube lades.
- 36:34Kurt, tell the folks why that is.
- 36:37Well, thanks.
- 36:38It's because of the stupid shaving blades I know about.
- 36:40And I've tried a lot of different times.
- 36:42Have you used Gillette's improved dispenser, Kurt?
- 36:45The latest one with a used blade compartment.
- 36:47Yes, it's a great convenience.
- 36:49And saves a lot of dollars.
- 36:51Men, see for yourselves how much easier
- 36:53shaving and longer lasting Gillette lube lades really are.
- 36:56Ask for them in the improved Gillette's dispenser.
- 36:59That deals them out unwrapped.
- 37:01And solves the used blade problem as well.
- 37:03You pay nothing extra for the dispenser.
- 37:05Just the regular price of the blades alone.
- 37:08Loop sharp.
- 37:09Field sharp.
- 37:11B sharp.
- 37:12Used Gillette lube lades.
- 37:14With the sharpest edges ever home.
- 37:16Kurt, play the ill.
- 37:18I'm sorry.
- 37:19Kurt, we're happy to have you with us during the season.
- 37:22And of course, sorry to lose you to the Army.
- 37:25But, Markle Sam calls.
- 37:27Stick around for a moment, Stella.
- 37:29And I would like to talk things over with you.
- 37:31Here's Hank Bauer.
- 37:32And the pitchfork and Stanley as well outside.
- 37:34I know you may not be enjoying it because the fields are behind.
- 37:36But I know you're happy to be here for the 10-day leave, right?
- 37:39Right.
- 37:40I'm glad to be here, Gene.
- 37:41A lot of luck to you, Kurt.
- 37:42And all the good fortune in the world with the 28th Division.
- 37:45Thank you, Gene.
- 37:46Hank Bauer now.
- 37:47One of the things that Stanley pitches, Hank swings.
- 37:49A very high pop going to the shortstop side.
- 37:51Hamner jogging in under.
- 37:53Hatches it.
- 37:57Bauer pops out to the shortstop.
- 38:01Now Jerry Coleman.
- 38:03With one down.
- 38:06The hitting hero of the World Series thus far.
- 38:08Running right handed.
- 38:09Chowkrip and Stanley throws.
- 38:10Coleman takes.
- 38:11Spike one call.
- 38:12All a hand curve ball.
- 38:23Coleman came around as if to bluff upon that time, but checked it.
- 38:27Nothing in one.
- 38:28One down.
- 38:29Last of the second.
- 38:30Stoyankies two for these nothings.
- 38:32Bigton Staddy delivers.
- 38:34Coleman swings.
- 38:35A long fly ball.
- 38:36Hit quickly and deep to left.
- 38:37This one moving back, back, back, under.
- 38:39Grabbed it.
- 38:40White at the base of the screen.
- 38:42380 feet away from home plate.
- 38:46He was on the plate turf.
- 38:49That warns the outfielders.
- 38:51Here comes the fence.
- 38:55So Coleman is surprising everyone with his long ball hitting.
- 38:58Remember he fooled the left field in Mayhem.
- 39:00Instead of building an asperger.
- 39:01With a game winning single yesterday.
- 39:03Two down.
- 39:05Heady four.
- 39:06Left handed batter.
- 39:07Pitcher.
- 39:08Strike 112.
- 39:10Down breaking curve ball.
- 39:12In the season.
- 39:14The White Hair Juncture.
- 39:16Hit 194.
- 39:187 hits and 36 trips.
- 39:20Nothing in one.
- 39:21Swing damage to strike two.
- 39:23He was brought up on the Long Island City Sandlot.
- 39:27In the borough of Queens, New York.
- 39:29Four.
- 39:30Nothing in two.
- 39:32A foul.
- 39:33Third base.
- 39:34Back seat.
- 39:38Out of play.
- 39:40Two down.
- 39:41Last of a second.
- 39:42Yankees get off to a two run march.
- 39:44In the very first inning.
- 39:46When it appeared.
- 39:47All the Phillies are going to dig in first.
- 39:49But Ford was an asperger with a good defense.
- 39:51Nothing in two pitch.
- 39:52Can Staddy throws.
- 39:53High and wide.
- 39:54To the chunky south bar.
- 39:55Ball one.
- 39:56One or two.
- 39:58Two gone.
- 40:00Staddy in a virtual second.
- 40:02The Guardie came on.
- 40:04With one out in the first inning.
- 40:06Two relieve young Miller.
- 40:08Bit way high and wide.
- 40:11Ball two.
- 40:13Two and two.
- 40:16Can Staddy.
- 40:18A Spartan.
- 40:19Four conditions.
- 40:21He runs.
- 40:23Every chance he gets.
- 40:25Two and two.
- 40:26Strike three calls.
- 40:28The ball blew up like a grapefruit came down.
- 40:31The ball was struck three calls.
- 40:33First strike out in the game by either of the two filled pitchers.
- 40:37So in the second inning.
- 40:39Yankee retirement.
- 40:40One two three.
- 40:41No runs.
- 40:42No hits.
- 40:43No errors.
- 40:44None left on.
- 40:45Two innings.
- 40:46Yankees two.
- 40:47The Phillies nothing.
- 40:49The fact that the Phillies.
- 40:54And incidentally.
- 40:56Old Pete.
- 40:57Grover Cleveland Alexander.
- 40:58Who hurled that.
- 40:59The first National League championship in 1915 was here.
- 41:02Yesterday.
- 41:03Not very well.
- 41:04But they say in the French box that he was still sharp enough to know what was going on.
- 41:09Anyway, these Phillies are the sentimental favorites.
- 41:12And everybody is hoping that even if they don't win the World Series and they certainly are deep down now.
- 41:19They would like to see the visiting National League club.
- 41:24This hand is looking static.
- 41:36I bet you even though you lose.
- 41:38It's a great feeling that all of the fans are appreciative of your effort.
- 41:42And certainly big Jim can static.
- 41:45Has written new marks in the record book.
- 41:47See that's right handed.
- 41:48And Ford's fastball is found off by Jim to the base of the screen behind the plate strike one.
- 41:54Miller of course never did get to the plate.
- 41:57In the series can Staddy got to the plate two times first day over two.
- 42:04Ball one.
- 42:05A curve that was just a wee bit high.
- 42:07Right handed batter.
- 42:08One ball one strike.
- 42:12Ford waits little time between pitches in the motion now he throws.
- 42:18Like two high fastballs.
- 42:21Two to nothing.
- 42:22Yankees leading top of the third now after a slow beginning in the first inning and a half.
- 42:26She's rolling along now.
- 42:27Sun comes out brilliant.
- 42:29Almost perfect baseball weather.
- 42:31One or two pitch.
- 42:32Wide and high ball two.
- 42:35Now let's check the wind for the moment.
- 42:37Very important for the long ball though Coleman hit the beat to left.
- 42:40It is blowing in decidedly from left field right now.
- 42:45A crockling in field.
- 42:47Not necessarily favoring anybody including a right field hitter.
- 42:50Two and two pitch.
- 42:52A ground ball.
- 42:54Slowly the second.
- 42:55Coleman up with it over the first in time.
- 42:57Staddy bounces out second to first.
- 42:59One down.
- 43:04Eddie Winkers.
- 43:06First fill base runner today.
- 43:08He drew a walk when Ford lost the mark for a while and passed him on a three to count.
- 43:15Eddie eventually moved around a third on Jones's double and pitching to Ennis.
- 43:20Dell forced the field of choice at the plate.
- 43:23Ball one wide.
- 43:25Ford now while missing occasionally is very very close.
- 43:30He missed by a scantage on the corner.
- 43:33One or no.
- 43:35He throws. Winkers swing. They zipper to center field.
- 43:38Base hit.
- 43:39Several hops fielded by DeMonte.
- 43:41He'll return to relay man.
- 43:42Second base then Coleman.
- 43:44Singles to center for Eddie Winkers.
- 43:47His fourth world series hit.
- 43:51A man on.
- 43:52One down.
- 43:53The beginning now of course is going to be necessary for the underdogs today.
- 43:58They have only been able to get one at a time.
- 44:00Three in three games and 28 innings.
- 44:06Yankees of scores have now scored an eight run.
- 44:1028 previous innings exclusive on this game.
- 44:13Ashburn about applied to left to the first.
- 44:15Go for one.
- 44:17Wide and high on the career ball.
- 44:19Ball one.
- 44:20One down.
- 44:21One on.
- 44:22One ball.
- 44:23No strike and number one for better.
- 44:25You might play the ace is a high on the Gillette scoreboard right now.
- 44:30The pitch.
- 44:31Inside.
- 44:32All right.
- 44:33Ball two.
- 44:34Two and a half.
- 44:35Outfield on Ashburn.
- 44:36Push then and toward the left.
- 44:37Straight away.
- 44:38Flap hitter.
- 44:39Infield.
- 44:40Playing up as if they would be looking for the double play which they are anyway but
- 44:43they play him that way anyway when there's nobody on.
- 44:45Fast runner.
- 44:46Two and a half.
- 44:47Two and a half.
- 44:48Two and a half.
- 44:49Two and a half.
- 44:50Two and a half.
- 44:51Two and a half.
- 44:52Two and a half.
- 44:53Two and a half.
- 44:54Fast runner.
- 44:55Two and a half.
- 44:56Squings and gets a foul.
- 44:57Just above our head.
- 44:59Behind the plate.
- 45:00Two and one.
- 45:01The vantage point for Mel, Al and myself is right smack jab behind the platter.
- 45:08The field is in front of it.
- 45:10And we can see the fancy hook with that ball as it sits in there to the opposing batters
- 45:16for the pitchers.
- 45:17Bored and Alcon Staddy.
- 45:18Bored in the stretch.
- 45:19Two and one.
- 45:20Pitching.
- 45:21Another foul, lost his third base dive, giving it a try, Doc Brown.
- 45:25No avail. End of the stand to Arlen.
- 45:292-1-2.
- 45:33Wait just at first base, while not an exceptionally
- 45:37speedy base runner, a smart one.
- 45:41He's shut the ellipses knees high
- 45:45as in setting up exercise, physical training. Bigs well, runs
- 45:49off his toes. 2-2.
- 45:53Foot-foot, hash burn. Waiting for the pitch.
- 45:57Stoned by Ford. He stuck him out on a roundhouse curve.
- 46:01Well that's one of the first things a kid will pick up on a sandlot.
- 46:05And I imagine that was one of Ford's best deliveries.
- 46:09When he was operating in the baseball alliance with the Pearl Queens in New York, he really
- 46:13found him.
- 46:17So the hash burn, who struck out three times yesterday,
- 46:21now is fans of the fourth time. He and sister.
- 46:25Were tied until six struck out in the first.
- 46:29Two down on the batter Jones who doubled into the stand in right field.
- 46:33First inning. Strike one ball. Caught the corner for the right-handed batter.
- 46:49Two strikeouts now. A 24.
- 46:53Irish, Swedish, Kansas.
- 46:57Light, there's quite gold.
- 47:01Nothing in one. Checking it first.
- 47:05Coming to the plate. Inside of the toes on a curve.
- 47:09Ball one. One ball, one strike.
- 47:13Two gone. With the Phillies top of the third Yankees leading. Two to nothing.
- 47:17Two runs, two hits. Phillies no runs, two hits.
- 47:21Set for the 1-1 delivery.
- 47:25Swinging a ground ball to the left of short. Residual up the play at second for the fourth.
- 47:29Residual to Coleman to retire the Phillies in the top of the third inning.
- 47:33Fourth outplay goes short for second.
- 47:37Third inning for the Phillies, no runs. A single is centered by
- 47:41the Yankees. No errors by the Yankees. One man left. Two and a half innings.
- 47:45The Yankees two, the Phillies nothing.
- 47:49Kurt Simmons of the Philadelphia Phillies, meant every word.
- 47:53Shaving hand.
- 47:59Now when buying Gillette blue blades, ask for them in the
- 48:03improved Gillette dispenser. This hand magazine deals them out unwrapped.
- 48:07Ready for use. And has a built-in compartment for the safe, permanent disposal of used blades.
- 48:11You get 20 blades, 40 shaving edges
- 48:15for 98 cents. 10 blades for 49 cents.
- 48:19Remember, look sharp.
- 48:23Field sharp. B sharp. Use Gillette blue blades
- 48:27with the sharpest edges ever hold.
- 48:31Last of the third, New York batting, Woodling, lead off man.
- 48:35Takes the inside curve, a strike one. Gene
- 48:39through the life, Angoliad's bubble in the first and score the first
- 48:43of the two Yankee runs.
- 48:49Angoliad's bubble in the first and score the first of the two Yankee runs.
- 48:53Sandy Wines delivers. Gene swings as a lazy fly.
- 48:57The short left center. Ashburn calling for it.
- 49:01100 and makes the grab of the put-out. One down.
- 49:05Fly ball to side.
- 49:09Fly ball to side.
- 49:13Fielders at all. My hasn't missed
- 49:17Yankee defense. Displated self.
- 49:21The field, of course, are known to have just about the best infield
- 49:25in the National League. No flies on the Yankee defense either.
- 49:29Good scooter. Strike one called. Inside curve. One thing about
- 49:33Kinshawda, he uses a small strike zone and brother, he's got one up there right now in scooter.
- 49:37Nothing in one. An attempted
- 49:41punt. Ticked foul behind the plate.
- 49:45You see his limbs are so short that even when he moves the hand up
- 49:49to try to dump a punt to the left or a bleed one to the right
- 49:53he catches the defense completely off-dars, invariably.
- 49:57Nothing in two. Jones now moves back.
- 50:01Fielding with the punt is off. With a nothing-two-count on fill.
- 50:05Can Stanley pitch his risotto? Swing. Round ball toward the hole. Nice scoop by
- 50:09Jones. Go to first. In time by a side.
- 50:17Two men out. Good play by Jones.
- 50:21He went toward the base-head hole between third and short. I made a glove hand
- 50:25spear the ball and racing up
- 50:29to the left of an iron. Whipped over to first to get the fast run of risotto. Two gone.
- 50:33With a single on and off the eye.
- 50:37Strike one. Attempted punt.
- 50:41The crowd is kind of chuckling because they don't look for yogi to try to
- 50:45drag that ball for a punt. I'll tell you, he doesn't run too fast either
- 50:49at all. But not a good strategy. The pitch is high and wide.
- 50:53Jones, of course, is not taking any chances. Moves in. Second pitch.
- 50:57One-on-one.
- 51:01Two is talking about risotto. Is there a one-on-one pitch? That swing and a foul.
- 51:05Jones is going to give it a try but can't get it. Into the sand.
- 51:09Box seats left side.
- 51:17Mel points out that there are just like a lot of other catches and
- 51:21ponderously built fellas have to get good starts. But once they get flowered, they like
- 51:25those pullbacks that we're crashing through today. A lot of good iron. One and two pitch.
- 51:29Ground ball. Hits to the right of second. Up with it. Gulli had over the first
- 51:33in time on a quick scoop by Wacom. Called out by Conlon.
- 51:37And now I notice that Conlon had a use his left arm to call it out
- 51:41today because he was bruised in awe on the opening day. Vera bounces out
- 51:45second to first. So I'd be tired in order for the second straight inning.
- 51:49Conscending now, switching wonderful relief ball. Now his club trails. Two to nothing.
- 51:53No runs. No hits. No errors. None left on. Three innings totals.
- 51:57Two run. Two hits. No errors. And one left on.
- 52:01For the Phillies. No runs. Two hits. A big juicy food.
- 52:05And three men left on.
- 52:09The late scout
- 52:13O'Rourke who once worked for the Detroit Tigers as well as the Yankees
- 52:17made a statement to me one time. We were watching a ball game in the
- 52:21upper New York State League where a lot of collegians like Hank Faroia and many others
- 52:25had come on to the big time. He said in a tight ball game
- 52:29you look up at the sky and you say please
- 52:33let us have a juicy boot. And the one big
- 52:37bobble in the game of course has undoubtedly aided the Yankee Cogs.
- 52:41But they played well. They backed up board with a tight defense. And the Phillies now
- 52:45not only have to come from behind. Three games down. But must
- 52:49stage a beginning. For the bombers when
- 52:53they're spotted a couple of runs are tough to catch. And when you start hitting
- 52:57against them they start digging into the toes too. Now
- 53:01the top of the fourth inning. Dell and it's who grounded into
- 53:05a third to the plate. The field is choice to retire a waker. So it's a
- 53:09third at the time in the first inning. Over one. Dell has one world series hit
- 53:13a double. Letting right handed. Ford's fastball takes off
- 53:17too high and wide to the right handed. That a ball was.
- 53:21Why D4?
- 53:25Third baseman Brown not too deep. For Zodo deep to the shortstop hole.
- 53:29Outfield to the left. One or nothing bitch. Swing. Fly ball.
- 53:33Gallup. Ford right. But going into the stands and foul territory.
- 53:37One on one.
- 53:41Now Ford uses this moment to work on the ball
- 53:45a little bit. They called out a big blacksmith. He hasn't produced too much
- 53:49power. Although he certainly sent a lot of back at Shib Park for a 400 foot
- 53:53cloud. Joe hold it in. One on one. Swing on it.
- 53:57A change up curve that was a beauty. Throwing tight to the big right handed
- 54:01batter. Strike two.
- 54:05One ball just like Yankee's leading.
- 54:09Two or nothing. Top of the fourth. First man up.
- 54:13Slow hit. Four long third baselines.
- 54:17And it stays there.
- 54:21That ball
- 54:25was teasing Bobby Brown.
- 54:29Third baseman. And it said I got great big eyes Bobby.
- 54:33I don't know whether I want to go to the left or stay inside this white line.
- 54:37And so the ball turned its eyes right.
- 54:41And stayed right inside the line for a second.
- 54:45If there ever was one.
- 54:49And it's on. And the crowd really roared on that one.
- 54:53One of the most unique offensive plays in the game. And in the series.
- 54:57System of the banner. There's a left handed throw to first by Ford.
- 55:01No tag by Mice. And it's back to plenty of time.
- 55:09Swing. My ball. Very deep to the right. Moving in under the ball.
- 55:13Closing. And all the down.
- 55:17One away. The crowd roared for the moment. As this one uppercut the ball.
- 55:21And Bob banked away. But then he got the beat on it. And moved in fast for the put-off.
- 55:25One down.
- 55:29Grown hander. Also one. Ground ball to the shortstop. And then the put-off.
- 55:33And the second and eight.
- 55:37Right handed slinger. He's leading extra base producer in the series.
- 55:41Her misses outside. Low ball one. Ford pitching with tremendous
- 55:45voice for a fellow who's about to celebrate his 22nd
- 55:49birthday. 21st of this month.
- 55:53One ball no strikes to Hamner. Pitching.
- 55:57Swinging the right. Got the fast ball in there. High.
- 56:01I think one of the big reasons that Hamner has not been
- 56:05scattered too well. In other words they didn't look for him to hit the long ball off.
- 56:09It's the fact that he is an inveterate bad ball hitter. A lot of his hits
- 56:13were seen. Of what would have been balls as told by
- 56:17the umpire. One on one. Stretched by Ford.
- 56:21The check at first. Comes to the plate. Two low.
- 56:25Ball two. Two on one. And it's at first.
- 56:29With an infield single that they'll be writing about tonight.
- 56:33It just refused to go foul. And Brown waited on it.
- 56:37Wasn't much else to talk to either.
- 56:41Because if it had picked it up anyway it would have been tied at first base. Two on one.
- 56:45It comes to pitch. The runner breaks. The ground ball. Swaps all the hole.
- 56:49It's the third. Up with the ball is power. And the Phillies have run as it first and third.
- 56:53That was a weak ground ball but the hitter on word perfectly. With a right handed
- 56:57batter up there and it broke for seconds to drag and suck out
- 57:01foreman from the play. Like a football trend. And so it left a tremendous
- 57:05gap between first base in Mies and second base in Coleman. And roll lazily
- 57:09to short right field. Giving Hammer a ground single.
- 57:13And spotting Ennis at third base in scoring position. With one man up.
- 57:17And Semonix coming up.
- 57:21Two nothing Yankee leads.
- 57:25Albedo Ford.
- 57:29Buddy Ford and the stretch.
- 57:33Ford throws. Too close. And low. Ball one.
- 57:37Semonix right handed batter. Bounced out to short. Second inning.
- 57:41Robin Roberts has begun warming up. And the Phillies both pass.
- 57:45Phil's pulling out the stoppers.
- 57:49One on nothing. Ford throws. Semonix swings. Ground ball.
- 57:53Just inside the line. Goes to the plate. He is out.
- 57:57He takes fourth base course.
- 58:01Here's the runner. Caught in a first base. And he goes back.
- 58:05Residual fubble ball. Cannon moves to third.
- 58:09And Carlin is pulling Semonix out.
- 58:13On a first to catcher.
- 58:17Double play. The side is actually retired.
- 58:21So they waited out there in conference. It is a double play
- 58:25band. Lies tagging the bag. So Semonix didn't think so.
- 58:29Carlin called him out. And the throw to the plate is what we call a three
- 58:33three two double play. First base been getting a put out in the assist. And the runner
- 58:37at the plate. And it's retired. No runs.
- 58:41Two hits and a very weird inning. No errors.
- 58:45And one man left on.
- 58:49Three and a half innings. Gar Yankee two. Pills nothing.
- 58:53Man for the greatest shaving bargain ever offered. By a modern Gillette Super Speed
- 58:57Razor set. Believe me it's the biggest package of shaving comfort and convenience

- 59:17There's nothing to take apart or put together. Nothing to waste your time or try your
- 59:21patience. It changes blades instantly. Cleans instantly.
- 59:25And can't jam or clog. Ask for a Gillette Super
- 59:29Speed Razor and enjoy modern shaving comfort and convenience.
- 59:33It comes in a handsome styrene travel case with a Gillette dispenser holding ten
- 59:37factory sharp Gillette blue blades. Here's a big dollar
- 59:4175 I do for only a dollar.
- 59:45That play could bear out further explanation.
- 59:49The Yankees didn't realize with the exception of minds that he attacked the bag.
- 59:53The Conlin had already called Seminick out. And then Mize threw to the plate and
- 59:57promptly retired Delinus. That was one of the weirdest sinnings this series has
- 1:00:01witnessed. Nobody knew what was up except Mize and Conlin.
- 1:00:05Now the last of the four. DiMaggio facing his daddy who draws.
- 1:00:09Spike one calls. George filled two to nothing. And the fans have filled
- 1:00:13dozens of themselves about that last inning. The bills have had two grand scoring opportunities
- 1:00:17but their thoughts failed. Yankees leading. Nothing in one. DiMage
- 1:00:21wins. Then it was like two.
- 1:00:25Sawyer had Roberts getting ready and they filled both
- 1:00:29and you see in case the inning was full on. And they got down as far as the pitcher
- 1:00:33and a possible pinch hitter. Nothing to count
- 1:00:37DiMaggio. The standing pitch too high around the chin more
- 1:00:41than the pitch. One and two. Two punts by the big professor. The
- 1:00:55kick. The pitch. Wings and a two. Squint him out. On a sliding slider.
- 1:00:59Going away to the right handed batter. One down.
- 1:01:03And daddy's second strikeout. He is hurting
- 1:01:07him significantly. No training. Two to nothing. And of course young four.
- 1:01:11Has certainly had the opportunity to see his own defense
- 1:01:15really come to his rescue. I don't know whether
- 1:01:19Mize himself realized he tagged the bag but Conlin pointed it out to the fans. Here's
- 1:01:23Mize now. Yankees takes the low inside for a one.
- 1:01:27One ball and no strikes. One down
- 1:01:31and over the arm for the Yankees last and the fourth. They lead two to nothing over the Phillies.
- 1:01:35And he sets the livers. Two close.
- 1:01:39Wall two. Mize free swing left hander.
- 1:01:43And he throws right. Big beefy fellow.
- 1:01:47Ways to 240 pounds.
- 1:01:51Swing. Line drive. Right field in there.
- 1:01:55Bait it. Charging up to it. And it's the field. And Mize is on.
- 1:01:59With his second world series hit.
- 1:02:03That's the first hit off Consteady.
- 1:02:07He had retired nine Yankees in order
- 1:02:11when he came on with the module at second and one out to relieve Mida in the very
- 1:02:15first inning. Now the pest Bobby Brown.
- 1:02:19Left handed batter low inside. Ball one.
- 1:02:23Both of Mize's singles
- 1:02:27in this series have been carbon copies.
- 1:02:31Lofters over the second baseman's head and dipping into short right field.
- 1:02:35Want to know how to Bobby Brown.
- 1:02:39All for one. Stetch pitch. Stake one ball.
- 1:02:43We're having a great opportunity today, mellow myself,
- 1:02:47to watch the break of these pitches tossed up there by Consteady.
- 1:02:51We watch games during the season off at Angles usually. And I can tell you this fella has
- 1:02:55something on the ball. They may call it what players term junk.
- 1:02:59Very expensive junk. One to one. As the ball left it to center
- 1:03:03very high. Ashburn backpedaling about six yards. Camp center and
- 1:03:07holes it in. Brown flies to center.
- 1:03:11The ball has been hit up in the air I think more often than down in the
- 1:03:15third. This series. Two men out. And a runner on.
- 1:03:19And Henry Bower who pumped out the shortstop. Hamner in his first trip.
- 1:03:23Butting right handed. Slow stretch by the pitcher
- 1:03:27Consteady throws. Bower swings. Chopping ground foul. Third base side.
- 1:03:31Frankie Crocetti picks it up and gets it to the opposing third baseman
- 1:03:35Jones. Sawyer who was a Yankee organization man tells us that Crocetti
- 1:03:39might have been the game's greatest second baseman.
- 1:03:43But they needed a shortstop and what a shortstop he was. And one of the most
- 1:03:47manly Yankee errors. Nothing in one count. Pitch to the right handed
- 1:03:51batter. Swing. A zipper to third. Jones throw to second for the fourth.
- 1:03:55Bara bounces into a final out force.
- 1:03:59The third baseman Jones for the second baseman Mike Goliath.
- 1:04:03And the Yankees are set down on the fourth without a run. A right field single
- 1:04:07by Myers. No field errors and one man left. Four innings.
- 1:04:11Yanks two runs. Three hits. No errors. Fills no runs. Four hits.
- 1:04:15One error. For slick refreshing
- 1:04:19shaves that look tip top and feel the same. Use Gillette
- 1:04:23blue blades. These finest abrasive blades five for a quarter
- 1:04:27have the sharpest most beautifully finished edges ever home. Also they're hard
- 1:04:31enough to cut glass so they stay keen for one comfortable shave after
- 1:04:35another and save you money. When buying Gillette blue blades
- 1:04:39ask for them in a handy Gillette dispenser that feels the blades out unwrapped
- 1:04:43ready for use. It comes in both 10 and 20 blade sizes
- 1:04:47for the regular price of the blades at all. 10 seconds
- 1:04:51for station identification. This is the mutual broadcasting system.
- 1:05:09Back at Yankee Stadium New York with Mel Allen and Al Helger. This is
- 1:05:13Jean Kelly on Gillette's Cavalcade of Sports. The fourth game
- 1:05:17of the 1950 World Series. The New York Yankees two. The Phillies
- 1:05:21nothing. Mike Goliath leading off top of the fifth. Facing
- 1:05:2524 who throws. Strike one ball. A curve
- 1:05:29for the right handed batter. Goliath's slide to that field in his
- 1:05:33first trip up. He has two World Series hits.
- 1:05:37And looks at a low curve of all one.
- 1:05:49He has a very short stroke. Swinging at the ball. One on one.
- 1:05:53A high curve ball two. Two on one. Goliath.
- 1:05:57Then Pitchick and Staddy do to be followed by
- 1:06:01number one batter Eddie Wakers.
- 1:06:07Ford in the 2-1 pitch. Right to call. He's
- 1:06:11really cutting those corners with his youngster. And it's amazing.
- 1:06:15The great boys and self confidence he's exhibiting
- 1:06:19out there on the hill today. I'm sure the
- 1:06:23scouts for the Phillies had great praise for this youngster. Even up to two pitch.
- 1:06:27Swinging them at Stucky Mountain.
- 1:06:31Number three for Eddie Ford. He gets Goliath swinging on a lazy curve.
- 1:06:35Now for Staddy. Listen.
- 1:06:51Stepson he bounced out the second base last time and Jim
- 1:06:54swings as they boom in the right field. It is in there for a base hit.
- 1:06:58And almost got away from Hang Power. He didn't know whether to play it safe
- 1:07:02on a charge for the shoestring. And the ball kept zipping away to his
- 1:07:06all left. He's the right fielder. And he managed to trap it else it would have been
- 1:07:10curtain for him for the moment at least. So, uh, Staddy gets a single right.
- 1:07:14The pitchers in the series. A witness
- 1:07:18low pat. Reynolds. Rashid.
- 1:07:22Now for Staddy. Getting hits.
- 1:07:26And Yankee artillery goes way down to number nine. The young
- 1:07:30filled fat boy brings out the right red warm up sweater for
- 1:07:34Staddy. It was his first place for the singles. Can't say he's not contributing to his own cause.
- 1:07:38Banner said he winked. Ford throws him. Eddie swings. They line by
- 1:07:42for a much better field. Moving in under Woodling makes the catch. Nice play.
- 1:07:46Staddy jogs back to first. This wind out here
- 1:07:50is playing havoc with the outfielders. I believe that when Barre on the single
- 1:07:54bike and Staddy played it, he was crossed up by it. It's a crosswind type
- 1:07:58though primarily it is going in from dead left today. Across the
- 1:08:02diamond. And that's why Woodling had a bit of difficulty with the wakers who
- 1:08:06smashed to left. Two down.
- 1:08:10Banner, Ashburn. Open two. Fly ball to left. Strike out swinging on
- 1:08:14a roundhouse curve. Ford throws.
- 1:08:18Richie takes high and wide. 4-1.
- 1:08:22Score two to nothing. New York both runs in the first inning and since that time
- 1:08:26Staddy has matched the rookie for pitch for pitch.
- 1:08:30What a series this has been.
- 1:08:34For the low run.
- 1:08:38Shadow a third round. Ford in the stretch.
- 1:08:42Comes to the plate. Swing and a high pop. Back up second base.
- 1:08:46Barre moving in. Coleman weighs everybody away. Second baseman grabs to put out 30 feet
- 1:08:50on the ground. Ashburn pops out short right to the second baseman Jerry Coleman.
- 1:08:54Wines up the fifth. Flaws the Phillies. No runs. One hit.
- 1:08:58The field fifth. No errors by the Yankees. One man.
- 1:09:02Pitcher can Staddy. Left on. Four and one half innings. New York two.
- 1:09:06Philadelphia nothing. There has been
- 1:09:10only one triple play in World Series history. Also only one
- 1:09:14run with the laces loaded. Interestingly enough both occurred in the same
- 1:09:18game. Giving the fans a lot for their money. Yes men

- 1:09:54Apporting lasting protection. Get acquainted with Gillette leather
- 1:09:58or Gillette brushless. 30 cents. No other shaving creams contain
- 1:10:02K34.
- 1:10:06But the WizKids have two runs in.
- 1:10:10Seminix being replaced by a runner Mayo and the pitch is outside for a ball to Mike
- 1:10:16Goliath. So unless the Phillies continue to come through here
- 1:10:22in the ninth inning it would be a heartbreaking error for Ford who wanted the
- 1:10:26shutout. The pitch low outside for a ball. Two balls no strikes.
- 1:10:30Goliath's
- 1:10:34glad to let struck out file the first Mayo on first place two down
- 1:10:38two in ninth inning five to two the score of the delivery right in there for a call strike.
- 1:10:42June 1.
- 1:10:46Two balls one strike.
- 1:10:50Two balls one strike.
- 1:10:54Two balls one strike.
- 1:10:58Two balls one strike.
- 1:11:02The stretch Mayo with a lead and the pitch.
- 1:11:06Swung on a ground ball hit into the hole between first and second and left field for a base hit.
- 1:11:10Up to the ball is Woodling throws back to Rizzuto holding it second as Mayo.
- 1:11:14And now the tying run comes to the plate for the WizKids.
- 1:11:18And it will be a pinch hitter.
- 1:11:22Stan Lopata
- 1:11:26will be the bat for Robin Roberts.
- 1:11:30And while there's a bit of a conference at the mound as
- 1:11:36Stingle comes out of the dugout we pause ten seconds for station identification.
- 1:11:40This is the mutual broadcasting system.
- 1:11:44This is the mutual broadcasting system.
- 1:11:48This is the mutual broadcasting system.
- 1:11:52This is the mutual broadcasting system.
- 1:11:56This is the mutual broadcasting system.
- 1:12:00Casey Stingle has elected to remove
- 1:12:04Whitey Ford from the ballgame.
- 1:12:08And we'll have a new pitcher coming on for the Yankees in the top of the ninth inning.
- 1:12:12And so for the second
- 1:12:16straight day a Yankee starter has been relieved.
- 1:12:20Although Lopata yesterday pitched excellent ball as did Whitey Ford here.
- 1:12:24Ford went to the ninth inning with two outs
- 1:12:28and a potential shutout in his grasp when Woodling
- 1:12:32dropped the deep liner hit by some nick that
- 1:12:36would have been the third out. It was charged with an error two runs scored.
- 1:12:40And then the follow-up single by Goliath has put the Phillies
- 1:12:44in position whereby the distance cloud
- 1:12:48could tie it up.
- 1:12:52And Allie Reynolds is coming in from the ballpen
- 1:12:56to relieve Whitey Ford who went eight and two-thirds innings.
- 1:13:00A loud seven hits.
- 1:13:04Walked one man, the very first one he faced,
- 1:13:08hit a batter in the ninth inning, struck out seven
- 1:13:12and actually has not officially allowed
- 1:13:16any run. The two runs that the Phillies have scored here in the ninth inning
- 1:13:20will be classified as unearned.
- 1:13:24So Allie Reynolds comes on for the second time in the series
- 1:13:28and Ford gets the hands he needs.
- 1:13:52In the event that Allie Reynolds should subdued the Phillies
- 1:13:56here in the ninth inning, the Vickby would still go to Ford
- 1:14:00in the event he may be, and this is unofficial,
- 1:14:04he may be the youngest ever to win a World Series game.
- 1:14:08Dave Adams, whom Pittsburgh fans will recall vividly,
- 1:14:14among others, won a World Series game for the Pirates
- 1:14:18against the Tigers in 1909 when he was just 25 years of age.
- 1:14:22Some of the fans are booing Casey for removing
- 1:14:28Whitey Ford.
- 1:14:34And now Casey calls Jim Turner out of the Yankee dugout, he's the Yankees' pitching coach
- 1:14:38to ask him something, and Casey then goes back to the mound
- 1:14:42to say something to Reynolds. So we've had some
- 1:14:46real excitement here in the ninth inning.
- 1:14:50The Yankees leading five to nothing, and with their 13th World Championship
- 1:14:54almost all wrapped up, the Phillies have begun to go to work.
- 1:15:00Stan LaFatta, a 6'2", 210 pounder, 25 years of age
- 1:15:06from Detroit, Michigan, steps into bat for Robin Roberts.
- 1:15:14He had 26 out of 130 on the season.
- 1:15:18Wasn't too active, he's a big fellow.
- 1:15:22Runner's on first and second.
- 1:15:26Mayo on second, Goliath on first, two outs.
- 1:15:30Ninth inning, the pitch. Strike ball, fastball in there,
- 1:15:34letter high, Reynolds fastball pitcher.
- 1:15:42Halley's already achieved one victory in this series.
- 1:15:52Mayo off second, Goliath off first, the stretch. Here's the pitch.
- 1:15:56Lopata swings and misses, one, two.
- 1:16:00He threw an aspirin tablet up there that time.
- 1:16:04Reynolds can throw as hard as anybody in the major leagues.
- 1:16:10And when he erares back and fires as hard as he can, it's tough to see him.
- 1:16:18Looks into getting a sign, two strikes on Lopata, Mayo off second.
- 1:16:22Goliath off first, stretch by Reynolds. Here's the pitch and it is.
- 1:16:30No strike three, almost went for it and held up its low with a curveball.
- 1:16:34One and two, the crowd started to roar.
- 1:16:38One and two, the compound on Lopata.
- 1:16:48Halley gets his sign, Goliath leads off second.
- 1:16:52Mike Goliath off first, the stretch. Here's the pitch.
- 1:16:54Lopata swings and misses, strike three in the Yankees, a world champion for the 13th time.
- 1:17:00As Halley Reynolds powered another fastball by him.
- 1:17:04And the final score, New York five, Philadelphia two.
- 1:17:08And there goes Eddie Sawyer, the manager of the Philadelphia Phillies from his third base coaches box,
- 1:17:14over toward the Yankee dugout to be among the first to go in to congratulate Casey Stengel and the Yankees
- 1:17:20on having swept the four games for their 13th world championship out of 17 efforts.
- 1:17:2817 tenets and 13 times have been returned the victors in the World Series.
- 1:17:34And for the sixth time, out of those 13 world championship achievements,
- 1:17:43have won the series four games to none and that has been accomplished only nine times overall
- 1:17:50in the 47 year history of the World Series.
- 1:17:53So here you are with the totals.
- 1:17:57The Yankees five runs, eight hits, two errors, four men left on.
- 1:18:07For the Philadelphia Phillies two runs, seven hits, one error, and seven men left on.
- 1:18:13That check gene.
- 1:18:16And so the World Series now is history. Al Helfer is on hand to give you his brilliant analysis and summary.
- 1:18:23But before Al comes in, I'm sure he won't mind a word from Gene Kelly.
- 1:18:29I know that Gene enjoyed broadcasting this World Series as much as you fans enjoyed listening to it.
- 1:18:36Gene, it was one that got over with in a hurry in the four games.
- 1:18:41I just wondered what you thought about it.
- 1:18:44Well, in the first three games, Mel, there's no question that scouting came to the fore.
- 1:18:48The pitching was magnificent.
- 1:18:50The feeling was superb. And of course, every time the field had a lapse mentally, offensively, or defensively,
- 1:18:57the Yankees didn't fail to take advantage of the opportunity.
- 1:19:00I'd like to kind of check back on the quote that we gave to Tom Flarek, the ace release for the Yankees yesterday.
- 1:19:08He says there isn't much difference in these teams, personnel-wise.
- 1:19:11He says there is age-wise and he doesn't mean graybeard.
- 1:19:15At the experience hold, and that today, scouting went out the window because Constanti had to come back comparatively quickly.
- 1:19:21He hadn't gone stretches of distance too frequently this season.
- 1:19:25And at a youngster, 21 years of age, who learned his baseball in the same lots of Long Island City within shouting distance,
- 1:19:32this Bronx ballpark was masterful all the way.
- 1:19:35Of course, legitimately, as you said, Mel, the two runs shouldn't have scored at all.
- 1:19:39But those just couldn't muster up a batting attack. Worth their salt. Their pitching, as you'll have to admit, was great for the three games.
- 1:19:47And that Sawyer, if he had won today, would have had a three-way gavel.
- 1:19:50He would have had to use Constanti and Relief after Miller.
- 1:19:53Come back with Roberts tomorrow.
- 1:19:56And even if there was a possible victory here in the Sunday ballgame,
- 1:19:59he still would have had to scrape around the bottom of the bag to come up with pitchers that might try something that never has been done
- 1:20:06in the history of this World Series Autumn Classic that has come from behind three games down.
- 1:20:11The Yankees, you might say, Mel, deserve to win.
- 1:20:14And I think that the Phillies will be the first clubs to admit it because you saw the old Yankee organization man himself,
- 1:20:19Skip Ready Sawyer, Race to the Dugout, to be the first one to congratulate the Yankees.
- 1:20:24I want to say this much, Mel. For me, it's a thrill of a lifetime if I don't live another minute.
- 1:20:28I have lived for 1950 with a pen and one of the Phillies and into a World Series Classic.
- 1:20:34Even the most optimistic, except Sawyer himself, felt would occur.
- 1:20:38It's been a great opportunity for yours truly working with you, Al Helper and the rest of the mutual and Gillette crew,
- 1:20:44and to see a great ball club fully deserving of its second straight world championship.
- 1:20:50And it's 13th of all time. You can throw the numerology out the window, Mel.
- 1:20:54Well, thank you ever so much, Gene. It was a great pleasure being able to work with you.
- 1:20:59And I just wanted to say this. The Yankees have been a team that you can characterize basically as alert opportunists.
- 1:21:09As Red Rolf, Hank Greenberg and many baseball observers have said, the Yankees are not the old type overpowering Yankees,
- 1:21:18but they are a type of ball club that will never beat themselves.
- 1:21:24And whenever you give them any sort of an opening, they're quick to take advantage of it.
- 1:21:29And so that's the score there as the Yankees go on to win the World Championship for their second straight year
- 1:21:36and the 13th time in their glorious history.
- 1:21:40Eddie Ford was the winning pitcher, Bob Miller the loser, and now here is Al Helper to wind it up in his inimitable fashion.
- 1:21:48OK, Al. Well, thank you very much, Mel. Ladies and gentlemen, we saw many impressive things here in the 1950 World Series,
- 1:21:55but I think the most impressive was to see the entire stands here this afternoon rise and applaud young Wadi Ford
- 1:22:02as he strolled ejectively off the mound after having been taken out in the ballgame in the top half of the light dining.
- 1:22:07But young Wadi Ford weathered a very stormy top half of the first inning, in which he walked leadoff man, Wakers,
- 1:22:12and allowed Jones to double him around the third with one out, and then proceeded to close up the frame by striking out Sissler
- 1:22:18after Bobby Brown had thrown Wakers out of the plate on Delano's roller to third.
- 1:22:22The Phillies starting pitcher Bob Millidoe didn't fare so well with Lady Lock in the first inning.
- 1:22:26The breaks won against the young right-hander from the very start when leadoffer Gene Whitling's grounded to second was pooted by Mike Goliath for an error.
- 1:22:33Rezuto advanced Gene by grounding out to Jones and then Yogi Perra hammered in the first run of the game and the inning with a line drive single to right field,
- 1:22:42pitching carefully to Joda Maggio, Minner uncorked a wild throw and Perra raced all the way around the third.
- 1:22:47The Maggio then proceeded to double to right to score Perra in a trot from third base.
- 1:22:51And he saw your lift at his starter at this point and called upon the dependable Jim Kinsteady to pitch to Mies and Brown,
- 1:22:57which he did to retire the side with two runs on two hits at one Phillies' error.
- 1:23:01From the first inning until the sixth cansteady had given the Yankees but two hits and pitching for two third innings and relief.
- 1:23:07But his foul over the New Yorkers was broken when Yogi Perra slammed one into the right field stands for Homer to score the Yankees third run.
- 1:23:14The Maggio was put on, hit by the pitch and after Mies grounded out to move to Maggio the second, Bobby Brown got him home to score with a triple rammed into right center.
- 1:23:22Barra scored Brown with fly ball to deep right and Coleman ended the inning with a pop-up to hammer, short for three runs on two hits.
- 1:23:30There was no more scoring then until the top half of the ninth inning.
- 1:23:33When Gene Woodling with two away allowed a high fly ball as Mel and Gene told you the trot almost untouched,
- 1:23:40thereby allowing the Phillies to pick up two runs on two hits and they had two errors.
- 1:23:46There was two left on, there was that one error in the pre-.
- 1:23:49So the final totals again for the Phillies, two runs, seven hits, one error.
- 1:23:53They had seven men left on, their losing pitcher was Bob Miller.
- 1:23:56The AX5 runs eight hits, two errors, they had four men left on and the winning pitcher and rightly so was young Whitey 4.
- 1:24:02As far as attendance here at the World Series 1950 is concerned, a total paid attendance of 196,000 and nine were paid.
- 1:24:10It's going to be 63,406 in here at the Yankee Stadium for two games, 132,603.
- 1:24:17And one note, probably Whitey 4 at age 21 is the youngest pitcher, probably I say, the youngest pitcher to ever win a World Series game.
- 1:24:25If memory serves correctly, Babe Adams was about 25 years of age when in 1909 he won the first game of the 1909 World Series while pitching for Pittsburgh against Detroit.
- 1:24:37That ball game went to Pittsburgh, many of the old timers will remember at four to one.
- 1:24:42Well, the 47th annual baseball classic is now history.
- 1:24:46This 1950 World Series cannot be remembered as one filled with spectacular action and color,
- 1:24:50but rather as a series of contests in which the hopes of ambitious youth was eclipsed by veteran savvy, know-how and professional experience.
- 1:24:58Well, almost surely had the series been decided solely upon the spirit, determination and willingness, Philadelphia might well have been able to write a much different story for baseball's record book.
- 1:25:08However, there are things we shall always think of when recalling play in the 1950 series.
- 1:25:13We shall always remember the fine pitching performances of McBrashery, Jim Constantine, Robin Robertson and Alireno
- 1:25:18and the adept catching and handling of these pitchers by Simonica Fafil and Barra of the Yankees.
- 1:25:23We shall always remember too the fat inside pitch which Roberts served to Joda Maggio in the 10th inning of the second game
- 1:25:29and how that great competitor leaned into that pitch and smashed it into the left center field stand for the home run which gave the Yankees their second straight fix.
- 1:25:36Or can we forget the timely hitting and fine defensive play of Yankee second baseman Jerry Coleman?
- 1:25:40And during the months and years to come, the strategy used by the opposing managers will be discussed over and over again.
- 1:25:46But one conclusion can be counted.
- 1:25:48Both Stengel who has stupefiedly handled the world champion Yankees
- 1:25:54and Eddie Sawyer whose pitching staff was severely riddled by the loss of Kurt Simmons and with injuries to Church and Miller
- 1:25:59made the moves which most benefited youthful talent he directed.
- 1:26:03Another thing we shall remember is how the pitching in the series silenced the bats of the power hitters
- 1:26:08and when batters did get a hold of one, that so-called rabbit ball got nowhere.
- 1:26:12And so it seems that this year's World Series exploded the year-long myth of the lively ball.
- 1:26:18To pick heroes in this World Series, well you might say Joda Maggio, Vikrashe, Ali Reynolds, Jerry Coleman and Yolke Barrett
- 1:26:26and all of the bills for that determined fight.
- 1:26:29Well, then that's about it.
- 1:26:32The story of another World Series goes into the record.
- 1:26:35But Gillette's cable-cable sports carries on.
- 1:26:37Every Friday night we're on the air coast to coast with a major boxing event of the week.
- 1:26:42Plan to be at Radio Ringside Friday nights and enjoy the fight.
- 1:26:45Now this is Al Helper who has enjoyed tremendously working with Gene Kelly of Philadelphia and Mel Allen of New York.
- 1:26:53A couple of fine guys enjoyed very much.
- 1:26:56And this is Al Helper.
- 1:26:58I said a moment ago saying smooth sailing, smooth shaving and good afternoon from your host, the Gillette Safety Razor Company,
- 1:27:04Mel Allen and Gene Kelly.
- 1:27:10We wish to thank the sponsor of Man on the Farm, the Quaker Oats Company,
- 1:27:14makers of full-of-fifth feed for relinquishing their regular time today.
- 1:27:17Man on the Farm will follow over many of these stations in just a moment.
- 1:27:21In other areas, the football game of the week will follow immediately.
- 1:27:25This is the Mutual Broadcasting System.
