- 0:02Speaker 1: Hello, and welcome to Redioi's Children's Story Hour. As a
- 0:05reminder of Radio Eye is a reading service intended for
- 0:08people who are blind or have other disabilities that make
- 0:11it difficult to read printed material. Today we will be
- 0:15reading from various books on feelings. Your reader today is Dyingane.
- 0:22We will begin with the book Sometimes I Feel Sad,
- 0:27which was published by Pebble and in print of Capstone
- 0:33and the copyright here is twenty twenty one. It was
- 0:36written by Jacquine J. Cox. What is sadness? Imagine senior
- 0:44friends playing a game. You run over to join them,
- 0:47but they say you can't play. You sit down on
- 0:50a bench all alone. You probably feel sad. Sadness is
- 0:54an emotion or feeling. Some emotions can make us feel good,
- 0:59but others, like sadness, can make us feel down in
- 1:02the dumps. What does it feel like to be sad?
- 1:07Can you think of a time you were sad? Maybe
- 1:10you lost your favorite toy or watched a sad movie.
- 1:13How did you feel when you are sad? Your smile
- 1:17goes away, you get tears in your eyes, your lip
- 1:20might shake, your heart feels heavy. You may feel tired
- 1:23and want to stay in bed. Using your senses. Your
- 1:28senses can make you feel different things. Everyone has five senses.
- 1:32We can hear, smell, and touch things. We can also
- 1:36taste and see things. Seeing someone else's cry might make
- 1:40you sad. Hearing a sad song can get you down.
- 1:43Maybe the smell of a homemade cookie makes you miss
- 1:47your grandma. Talking about your feelings. Being able to say
- 1:51how you feel is important. If you are sad, tell
- 1:53your family or friends. They can help you. Talking about
- 1:57it can make you feel better too. Naming your emotions
- 2:00can be tricky, but a little practice will make it easier.
- 2:04Just think about how you are feeling and why, then
- 2:08say your emotion out loud. Understanding sadness, You have probably
- 2:16been sad at one time or another, but why Maybe
- 2:20you didn't do well on a test or had to
- 2:22move to a new city away from your friends. It
- 2:25is okay to feel sad sometimes, but you don't want
- 2:28to feel sad for too long. It's helpful to know
- 2:31what causes sadness. Then you can figure out how to
- 2:35feel happy when you are sad. It can be hard
- 2:38to get along with others in school. It can be
- 2:40harder to learn. You might be distracted and not hear
- 2:44what the teacher says. How you feel about yourself can
- 2:47affect your emotions. If you feel good about yourself, it
- 2:50is easy to be happy. If you feel bad about yourself,
- 2:54it is easy to be sad. Handling your feelings when
- 2:58you're sad. There are things you can do to feel better.
- 3:01Crying can get out all your sad feelings. Turning on
- 3:05upbeat music and dancing around can put you in a
- 3:09happy mood. Going for a walk can get rid of sadness.
- 3:12You can also help others feel better. You see someone
- 3:16looking sad, talk to them, ask them to play with you,
- 3:19Say something nice to them. Be positive. It helps others
- 3:23around you feel more cheerful too. Everyone has things that
- 3:30they are thankful for. Maybe you are thankful for your family, house, toys,
- 3:34or favorite foods. Try to remember these things when you
- 3:37are feeling down. It will chase your blues away. The
- 3:42next book is called When Sophie Gets Angry, Really Really Angry,
- 3:48and it was published by Scholastic Incorporated. It has a
- 3:53copyright year of nineteen ninety nine and it was written
- 3:55by Molly Bang. Sophie was busy playing when her sister
- 4:01grabbed gorilla, No, said Sophie, Yes, said her mother. It
- 4:08is her turn now, Sophie as her sister snatched gorilla away.
- 4:12Sophie fell over the truck. Oh is Sophie ever angry? Now?
- 4:20She kicks, She screams. She wants to smash the world
- 4:24to smotherings. She roars, a red, red roar. Sophie is
- 4:32a volcano ready to explode. And when Sophie gets angry,
- 4:37really really angry, she runs. She runs and runs and
- 4:42runs until she can't run anymore. Then for a little
- 4:46while she cries. Now she sees the rocks, the trees
- 4:50and ferns. She hears a bird. She comes to the
- 4:53old beech tree. She climbs. She feels the breeze below
- 4:58her hair. She watched the water and the waves. The
- 5:02wide world comforts her. Sophie feels better now. She climbs

- 8:48yourself and others. Our next stories will be on Valentin's.
- 8:54The first one is called Ruby Valentine Saves the Day
- 8:58and it was published by Carol Wrote of Books and
- 9:03has a copy right year of twenty ten. It was
- 9:06written by Lori B. Friedman, high above the hills of
- 9:13hartleand just beyond the township sign with her feathered friend
- 9:16named Lovebird lived Ruby Valentine. Now Ruby had a favorite day.
- 9:22It came around once a year. As she settled in
- 9:26to her new house, Valentine's Day was drawing near, so
- 9:29she decided to throw a party without a moment's hesitation.
- 9:33She and Lovebird sat right down and designed the invitation.
- 9:39It's a party. On February fourteenth, also known as Valentine's Day.
- 9:43Please join me in my house to eat and drink
- 9:45and play. I'll wait your RSVP that says you'll be mine.
- 9:51I can't wait to celebrate. Ruby mailed the invitations, then
- 9:56hugged Lovebird with affection. She told her feathered friend. They
- 10:00playing this party to perfection. She and Lovebird hung new curtains,
- 10:05They scoured every nook. They decorated room by room. They
- 10:09began to bake and cook. When they tied up the outside,
- 10:13Lovebird clung to every feather. Ruby shivered with excitement or
- 10:17possibly from bad weather. As the special day drew closer,
- 10:23Ruby counted RSVPs. She never noticed the thermometer. It rid
- 10:28thirty two degrees. Valentine's is tomorrow, and I want everything
- 10:33to be just right. Ruby tied up gifts and goodie bags,
- 10:37then kissed the Lovebird good night. But when Valentine arrived
- 10:42and brought something unexpected. Though Ruby planned out most things,
- 10:46there was one thing she neglected. A snowstorm, cried out Ruby.
- 10:51She spent all morning on the phone. No one could
- 10:54make it up the mountain. She'd be celebrating Valentines alone.
- 10:59No perfect party, sobbed poor Ruby. Now it won't take place.
- 11:04Lovebird wiped away the tears as they trickled down her face.
- 11:08Then he looked outside the window and said, do not despair.
- 11:11If no one can make it here, let's take the
- 11:14party there. Ruby looked at Lovebird. This wasn't how I
- 11:19planned the day. Lovebird shook his feathers. There is no
- 11:23other way. So together, Ruby and Lovebird carefully packed their sled.
- 11:27As they set out down the mountain, Ruby yelled full
- 11:32steam ahead. But as they made their way to Heartland,
- 11:35little did they know they left behind a trail of
- 11:38party fair amissed the ice and snow, happy balance Tyne's day,
- 11:44cried Ruby. As she went from door to door, she
- 11:47gathered everyone in Heartland, from every school and house in store.
- 11:51Time to celebrate. Smiled Ruby, will have a party in
- 11:55town square. Then, horrified, she realized her slid was and bear.
- 12:01Ruby run her hands together. I've made a big mistake.
- 12:04We can't have a party without presents, cards or cake. Nonsense,
- 12:09said the townspeople. Will have fun anyway. As long as
- 12:12we're together, Let's enjoy the day. So they built a
- 12:16giant sell me and they sang songs around a fire.
- 12:20They sounded so good together they formed the Heartland Choir.
- 12:25Everyone loved the holiday, but Ruby most of all. It
- 12:28wasn't what she planned, but she truly had a ball.
- 12:33In the end, everyone thanked her and said you saved
- 12:36the day. Ruby smiled from ear to ear. She had
- 12:39something she wanted to say. I've always loved Valentinees. You
- 12:43all know that is true. Though I celebrate every year.
- 12:46Today I learned something new. Planning the day out to
- 12:49perfection is not what makes it great. If you're with
- 12:54the ones you love, that's all you need to celebrate.
- 13:00Book is called The Valentine Express and it was published
- 13:02by Marshall Cavendish and has a copyright year of two
- 13:07thousand and four and it was written by Nancy is
- 13:10the Elizabeth Wallace. On February fourteenth, Missus Bloom asked, who
- 13:17is our calendar? Help her today? Me, said Minna. It's
- 13:21Valentine's Day. She taped a paper heart over the fourteen.
- 13:25Let's talk about Valentine's Day, said missus Bloom. Would anyone
- 13:29like to share? Valentine's Day is about love and friendship,
- 13:35said Minna, and giving each other cards. Added tyrone and candy,
- 13:40said Lindsey. My day gave my mom flowers, said Vanessa.
- 13:44It's about saying and doing nice things, said Miguel, and
- 13:47everybody being everybody's friend. Yes, it's a day to be
- 13:51extra thoughtful and caring, agreed missus Bloom. But how did
- 13:55celebrate Valentine's Day begin, she asked. Nobody really knows. It
- 14:00may have started in ancient Rome, during a festival held
- 14:03in February. Young picked young men picked names from an
- 14:08urn in hopes of finding someone to marry. Might have
- 14:11started with someone named Valentine, who lived a long, long ago.
- 14:15There are several stories about Valentine. Our story tells us
- 14:18how he was kind to children and that he sent
- 14:21a note to a young friend and signed it from
- 14:23your Valentine. Or may have started because in the old
- 14:26days everyone thought the birds found their mates on February fourteenth.
- 14:31It may have started for all those reasons. But one
- 14:34thing we do know for sure. For hundreds of years,
- 14:37sweethearts have been sending each other notes and cards, gifts
- 14:41and flowers. Missus Bloom pointed to her heart. The heart
- 14:44and feelings go together. We say things like you're my sweetheart,
- 14:48my heart throbs for you. So what shape is the
- 14:51symbol of love? The class knew the heart, they shouted,
- 14:56and I am sure you know who this is, said
- 15:00missus Bloom. The class shouted Cupid and oh no, not
- 15:06more love stuff grown dave. Missus Bloom smiled. Long long
- 15:12ago people also believed there really was a Cupid. He
- 15:18shot a magic golden arrow into someone's heart, then that
- 15:24person would fall in love. Today, Valentine's Day is celebrating
- 15:30many countries around the world. Knock, knock, knock. Someone was
- 15:34at the classroom door, Come on in, called missus Bloom.
- 15:41Vanessa's mom brought in two plates of heart shaped cookies.
- 15:45Mina's dad brought in a picture of pink lemon a punch,
- 15:51and everyone gave everyone Valentine's After school, Minna and Pip
- 15:58walked home. When they got to their streets, Wander was
- 16:02hobbling towards them. Happy Valentine's Day, Missus Wander. They said,
- 16:08oh is it today? Looks like your bags are filled
- 16:11with Valentines. Mina answered, I got one from everybody in
- 16:14my class. I got one from everybody in my class too,
- 16:18said Pip. Did you get lost? Missus Wander? I used
- 16:22to when I was young. She said, well, happy Valentine's Day.
- 16:26She went into her house. Mina and Pip kept walking.
- 16:30I wonder if grown ups get valentines, said Mina. What
- 16:33if missus Wander didn't get any. I wonder if Mad
- 16:37Damn Dody got one, or mister missus Checker or Big Stewart.
- 16:42They said together, let's make Valentines for them, said Mina.
- 16:48When they got home, they told Dad about their idea.
- 16:51That's a very thoughtful thing to do, he said. While
- 16:53you're creating Valentines, I'll be in the kitchen cooking something
- 16:56special for supper and dessert. Don't peek, we won't. Mina
- 17:01went and got her art box. It was filled with
- 17:03colored paper, a glue stick and marker, scissors and string, wooden,
- 17:08craft sticks, tape and pencil. Pip got his scissors. Can
- 17:13you make a Valentine, Pip asked Minna. Hearts are hard
- 17:17to cut, Minna, just do your best. Pip started cutting.
- 17:22Mina did too. She cut out one big paper hart
- 17:25and wrote on it. Then she cut it into puzzle pieces.
- 17:29A puzzle for missus Wander, said Mina. She put all
- 17:33the puzzle pieces into a white envelope. Oh La La,
- 17:40said Mina. I have a great idea for Madam Dody.
- 17:43She cut a large triangle. Then she cut two hearts
- 17:46for wings and cut a blue butterfly body. She pasted
- 17:49the butterfly onto the triangle. Pip held a triangle while
- 17:53Mina tagged it to a skinny stick. Voila a flag
- 17:57for Madam Dodyna. Mister and missus Checker loved playing games
- 18:04instead of tic tac toe, said Minna, giggling. I won't
- 18:07make them ticktac heart. Minna took a piece of pink
- 18:11paper and a piece of purple paper. She folded the
- 18:13pink paper in half and then in half again. She
- 18:17cut out four pink hearts, then four more pink hearts.
- 18:20She did the same thing with the purple paper. Next
- 18:24she measures square and cut it. Then she took some
- 18:27more purple and pink paper and cut out four skinny
- 18:30strips to fit the square. Pip held hop Pip helped
- 18:35hold the paper strip straight while Mina glued them in place.
- 18:39Mister and missus Checker going to love playing this game,
- 18:42said Mina. She put five pink carts and five purple
- 18:46hearts and the square into a big envelope. Now, said Minna.
- 18:52Time to deliver puzzle for missus wander flag from a
- 18:55damn dody tick tack toe, I mean heart for mister
- 18:59missus checker and for Big Stuart. Pip held something in
- 19:03his hands behind his back. These are not good hearts, Mina,
- 19:07can I see, Mina asked. Pip put some of the
- 19:10hearts on the table and stuffed the rest into his pocket.
- 19:14They are my practice hearts. Minna thought for a minute,
- 19:16that's okay. Pip. You were busy helping me. Do you
- 19:20have an idea Mina, he asked, I'm thinking. She said,
- 19:24you have extra hearts. Mina said, Pip, we can make
- 19:28We can make a mobile, she shouted. Minna got two
- 19:34craft sticks and strings from her art box. Holding the
- 19:37sticks to an x, she wound string around and around
- 19:41the middle nixt She cut four pieces of string the
- 19:44same length. She and Pip taped two purple hearts and
- 19:47two pink hearts to the strings. Then Mina tie the
- 19:50strings to the ends of the sticks. Now they had
- 19:53a mobile for Big Stewart. We better carry this valentine,
- 19:59said Minna, so it doesn't get all tangled. They loaded
- 20:03Pip's wagon. We're the Valentine Express, said Minna, delivering Valentine's
- 20:08to missus Wander, Madame Dody and mister Missus Checker and
- 20:12Big Stewart. Have fun, said Dad, But hurry along, is
- 20:15getting close to supper time. Happy Valentine's Day, missus, Wander,
- 20:20a heart shaped puzzle for you. Oh, how clever, how nice?
- 20:24Thank you Mina and Pip. At the next house, Pip
- 20:29buzz the buzzer. Madame Dody opened the door and he
- 20:34handed her the flag. Happy Valentine's Day. Happy Valentine's Day
- 20:37to you, may A. Miss Madame Dody waved her flag.
- 20:43Merci Bookoo. Mina clanged the bell. At the third house,
- 20:48Well look who's here, said mister Checker. Mina said. Valentine
- 20:52Express delivering a game for you and a pretty mobile
- 20:55for the missus, said mister Checker. Oh, Missus Checker, I
- 21:00will hang in the kitchen. You're filling our home with
- 21:03hearts and love. Thank you sweet neighbors, but started Pip.
- 21:08Mina grabbed Pip's hand, But we better be going. At
- 21:12the end of the Checker's path, the Valentine Express stopped
- 21:15Minna's side. Missus checker loved our mobile. But how But
- 21:20now we don't have a Valentine for Big Stuart. What
- 21:22will we do? Mina asked Pip. I'm thinking, said Mina.
- 21:26Do you have an idea, Mina, Pip asked, I'm still thinking.
- 21:30She answered. Then she said, if only we have your
- 21:34heart's Pip, They're in my pocket. Minna. He said, they
- 21:37are good. She said, now we need to find a
- 21:40big twig. Pip found one near a tree. He brought
- 21:44it over to Mina. Mena gently pushed Pip's hearts onto
- 21:48the small branches. Wow, said Pip. I like it. The
- 21:53Valentine Express was making deliveries again. Ding dong dong. What
- 21:57do we have here, asked Big Stuart. Come in, Minna
- 22:01and Pip. What a creative Valentine. Big Stuart put his
- 22:06Valentine in a base on the mantel. It's perfect, he said.
- 22:10It's the art of friendship. The Mina and Pip in
- 22:14the Valentine Express headed home, Happy Valentine stay. Our next
- 22:21story is called Pierre in Love and it was published
- 22:25by Orchard Books and has a copyright year of two
- 22:29thousand and seven. The author of the book is Sarah pennypacker.
- 22:34Pierre was in love. He had all the symptoms. He
- 22:37stared into space for hours on end. He tossed and
- 22:41turned all night in deep plump colored shadows had grown
- 22:44beneath his eyes. He could not eat. His favorite chowder
- 22:48tasted like paste, and Jesus he had once loved, lay
- 22:51in his mouth like stones. His face melted into Lupy's smile.
- 22:55Whenever he heard her name Catherine, or even a word
- 22:59that sounded like bom aspirin for example, or bathroom, how
- 23:03he longed to speak to her, to tell her how
- 23:06he felt. Pierre sighed tragically. This was exactly what he
- 23:10could not do. Catherine was exquisite, an angel of grace
- 23:14and beauty, and he was only an ordinary fisherman. In
- 23:19the morning stream, steaming out, he passed her studio. He
- 23:25saw her teaching ballet to the children who lived in town.
- 23:28He heard her voice, the floating like a silver ribbon
- 23:34over the harbor, and his heart beat so louly it
- 23:37drowned out the engine of his boat. In the evenings,
- 23:40pulling back into port, he saw her painting at an easel.
- 23:45How elegant she was, he marveled, How clean, how unlike himself.
- 23:51Pierre sighed another tragic sign and began to pull in
- 23:55his lines. The final haul of the day, some clams,
- 23:58three lobsters, a single bad The blue scales reminded him
- 24:02of how much he wanted to speak to Katherine. Of course,
- 24:04everything reminded him of this. Sunrises, sunsets, empty potato chip bags.
- 24:10And then there, tangled at the end of his line
- 24:13was an unbroken shell, as perfect in its beauty as
- 24:16Katherine herself. How would he give it to her? He must,
- 24:22as a token of the love he could not express
- 24:25in words. Perhaps she would paint it. How happy that
- 24:27would make her. Pierre hoisted his anchor tonight it seemed
- 24:32as light as a gold feather, and turned his boat
- 24:36towards the harbor. In his cottage, Pierre washed the shell
- 24:43with great care. Then he tied a ribbon around it.
- 24:46It was ready after an extra long shower. Pierre combed
- 24:49his hair back and styled his mustache with squid ink.
- 24:53He polished his teeth. He tried on everything in his closet,
- 24:56and finally selected a dashing red silk shirt, red he
- 25:00knew was the color of love. Inspecting himself in the mirror,
- 25:03then step back to get the full picture. Perfect. He
- 25:07did not look a bit like the fisherman he had
- 25:11been just an hour ago. He flew out the door
- 25:14and down the road to Catherine's studio. His heart surged
- 25:17as wild as Hurricane c as he raised his hand
- 25:21to knock on her door. Then he froze. What had
- 25:24been thinking? What would he say when she came to
- 25:27the door. Pierre laid the shell on Catherine's doorstep and fled.
- 25:34We will have to finish this story for next time,
- 25:38So this concludes our story hour for today. Please join
- 25:42us next time as we will read more stories, fables
- 25:46and fairy tales. And thank you for listening, and please
- 25:49stay tuned for the Harold Leader on Radio I
