- 0:47Speaker 1: You're here on a good day. I think we're going
- 0:50Speaker 1: to hear from anam quarterback Marcel Reid coming up, got
- 0:54Speaker 1: a high school report. Author Matthew Davis is going to
- 0:58Speaker 1: join me. He has written a really interesting informative book
- 1:05Speaker 1: on Mount Rushmore and how that came about. It is
- 1:10Speaker 1: called Biography of a Mountain, The Making and Meaning of
- 1:15Speaker 1: Mount Rushmore. Matthew Davis will be with us in this hour.
- 1:18Speaker 1: We're going to hear from Georgia football coach Kirby Smart
- 1:22Speaker 1: coming up, and Mallory is here as well with entertainment news.
- 1:27Speaker 1: Marcel Reid is one of thirteen semi finalists for the
- 1:31Speaker 1: Maxwell Award. Nine of those thirteen players are quarterbacks. The
- 1:37Speaker 1: non quarterbacks Jeremiah Love of Notre Dame, Emmitt Johnson of Nebraska,
- 1:42Speaker 1: Jeremiah Smith of Ohio State, mackay Lemon USC wide receiver,
- 1:48Speaker 1: the quarterbacks Ty Simpson, Gunner Stock and Haines King, f
- 1:53Speaker 1: Nando Mendoza, Trinidad, Chambaliss, Julian Saying, Dante Moore, and Diego Pavia.
- 2:01Speaker 1: Aside from Marcel, the Chuck Bednarik Award is given to
- 2:04Speaker 1: the best defensive player. Cassius Howe is on that list,
- 2:12Speaker 1: so it's a good day for Aggie's and Howl has
- 2:15Speaker 1: been named semifinalists for the Impact Award, presented every year
- 2:19Speaker 1: to the student athlete who best exhibits the characteristics of
- 2:23Speaker 1: Ronnie Lot by making an impact on and off the field.
- 2:30Speaker 1: It's in an acronym for integrity, maturity, performance, academics, community,
- 2:36Speaker 1: and tenacity. As far as I know, Cassius Howe has
- 2:40Speaker 1: not had to cut off part of his finger to
- 2:44Speaker 1: continue playing. Need to ask him about that the next
- 2:47Speaker 1: time the Earl Campbell Talrose National Player of the Week.
- 2:52Speaker 1: Texas Tech running back Cameron Dickey twenty three carries a
- 2:57Speaker 1: buck twenty one and a touchdown in the Raiders twenty
- 3:01Speaker 1: nine to seven performance over BYU. Dicky became the Big
- 3:05Speaker 1: twelve's leading rusher eleventh rushing touchdown of the season eight
- 3:12Speaker 1: hundred and sixty seven yards so far. He played at
- 3:18Speaker 1: Austin Crockett. In illegal filing against LSU's Board of Supervisors,
- 3:24Speaker 1: Brian Kelly's attorneys say LSU has taken the position that
- 3:29Speaker 1: has not quote formally terminated Kelly. The school, according to
- 3:35Speaker 1: the petition for a declaratory judgment, is now seeking to
- 3:39Speaker 1: fire Kelly for cause and avoid paying the fifty four
- 3:43Speaker 1: million dollar buyout. LSU's representatives had a call with coach
- 3:48Speaker 1: Kelly's representatives where LSU took the position that coach Kelly
- 3:53Speaker 1: had not been formally tournament terminated and informed his representatives
- 3:58Speaker 1: for the very first time that LSU believed there were
- 4:01Speaker 1: grounds for termination for cause. Kelly's attorneys are seeking a
- 4:08Speaker 1: judgment confirming confirming the firing was without cause and he
- 4:14Speaker 1: is entitled to the fifty four million dollars. Who's going
- 4:18Speaker 1: to get most of that money? The attorneys. The NC
- 4:22Speaker 1: DOUBLEA has agreed to pay out three hundred and three
- 4:24Speaker 1: million dollars to settle a class action any trust suit
- 4:29Speaker 1: representing seventy seven hundred volunteer college coaches who alleged the
- 4:34Speaker 1: NC DOUBLEA was engaged in illegal wage fixing under rule
- 4:39Speaker 1: that prohibited schools from paying them. A coach from the
- 4:43Speaker 1: proposal will receive about thirty nine thousand, two hundred dollars
- 4:47Speaker 1: before expenses and fees. In other words, they're not getting
- 4:52Speaker 1: a lot of money. SEC basketball tonight. The best one
- 4:58Speaker 1: is Florida State at Florida, the defending national champs, and
- 5:02Speaker 1: Kentucky at Louisville. Those two teams don't.
- 5:07Speaker 4: Like each other.
- 5:08Speaker 1: In case you didn't know, Memphis and Ole Miss is
- 5:11Speaker 1: also televised on the SEC network. The Aggie's next game
- 5:16Speaker 1: is at Reed Arena at seven o'clock Friday night against
- 5:20Speaker 1: Central Florida. Beside Florida State, Florida, Kentucky, Louisville, Texas Tech,
- 5:28Speaker 1: and Illinois are playing a nice little ballgame that's in Champagne,
- 5:35Speaker 1: and Creighton and Gonzaga have the late game on ESPN.
- 5:40Speaker 1: A couple of top twenty five teams there as well.
- 5:45Speaker 1: The twenty twenty six Winter Olympics are less than three
- 5:50Speaker 1: months away and still work to be done. The league
- 5:54Speaker 1: has not allowed its skaters to participate at the Olympics
- 5:58Speaker 1: since twenty fourteen. Now there are serious questions about the
- 6:02Speaker 1: quality of ice on which they will be playing. Gary
- 6:07Speaker 1: Bettman confirming to NHLGMS today there's still work ongoing on
- 6:12Speaker 1: the rinks and ice conditions. It's something we're monitoring closely
- 6:18Speaker 1: and we have absolutely no control over. This is all
- 6:23Speaker 1: on the International Olympic Committee and the International Ice Hockey Federation.
- 6:30Speaker 1: Betman says the league is getting quote constant reassurances that
- 6:36Speaker 1: everything will be fine with the rinks by the time
- 6:40Speaker 1: the athletes get there. The main hockey rink is still
- 6:45Speaker 1: being built. That venue was meant to undergoing testing for
- 6:50Speaker 1: the Olympics in December, but that's not going to happen.
- 6:58Speaker 5: Wow, it sounds like.
- 7:02Speaker 1: Another cluster from the International Olympic Committee. Just say tomorrow
- 7:09Speaker 1: on the show, we're going to be joined by local
- 7:14Speaker 1: musician made good Aiden Ross, who's on the voice. He's
- 7:19Speaker 1: in the middle of the knockout rounds right now. I
- 7:22Speaker 1: will visit with Aiden Ross tomorrow on the program. Scott
- 7:28Speaker 1: Clindenon will also be here tomorrow. Mallory will also be
- 7:33Speaker 1: here tomorrow. Thursday, we will have our Clark Eisenhower Outdoor edition.
- 7:40Speaker 1: We'll hear from Tory and York Aggie Linebacker. Let's see
- 7:47Speaker 1: what else will we hear. We'll hear from basketball. We'll
- 7:52Speaker 1: have some A Bucky and maybe a player or two
- 7:58Speaker 1: on Thursday's and then Freddy Kirk, Bulls, Tony Catalina, the
- 8:03Speaker 1: usual cast of characters with young Ryot. I looked online
- 8:09Speaker 1: for tickets today for A and M South Carolina. Right
- 8:14Speaker 1: now on the secondary markets, the cheapest ticket is two
- 8:18Speaker 1: hundred and thirty eight dollars. Now, that wasn't the shaker
- 8:21Speaker 1: to me. The chakra to me was the Sanford game.
- 8:25Speaker 1: The cheapest ticket for the Sanford game, I believe, is
- 8:28Speaker 1: somewhere around one hundred and eighty bucks right now. Yeah,
- 8:32Speaker 1: I think that will go down as you get closer
- 8:35Speaker 1: to the game. But that just shows the level of
- 8:42Speaker 1: interest and it seems like there's still a little bit
- 8:47Speaker 1: more room on the bandwagon. But I think most people
- 8:52Speaker 1: are already on the bandwagon. Nobody has jumped off the bandwagon.
- 8:56Speaker 1: Let's put it that way. And tonight, I don't know
- 9:00Speaker 1: what time. I don't really care. The college football playoff
- 9:04Speaker 1: rankings Week two come out, as we talked about with
- 9:08Speaker 1: the writers yesterday. No real concern there, just you know
- 9:15Speaker 1: this need to wait for those final rankings. But I
- 9:20Speaker 1: don't think there'll be any real concern there as well
- 9:23Speaker 1: for Raggy fans. Okay, we're going to take a break.
- 9:26Speaker 1: We're gonna hear from A and M quarterback Marcel Reid,
- 9:29Speaker 1: who visited with reporters today. The Final Lap is brought
- 9:32Speaker 1: to you by Chad Jones Law.
- 9:34Speaker 6: I'm Chad Jones. We know sports injuries hurt, and so
- 9:37Speaker 6: do injuries from car recks. But you didn't sign up
- 9:40Speaker 6: to be in a car wreck with someone who wasn't
- 9:41Speaker 6: paying attention. It was their fault, and now you're left
- 9:44Speaker 6: to deal with the consequences. You need to see a doctor,
- 9:47Speaker 6: and you're missing work. Chad Jones Law can help. We've
- 9:49Speaker 6: been helping our neighbors for more than two decades stop
- 9:52Speaker 6: getting frustrated with the other side's foot dragging. Remember, don't
- 9:56Speaker 6: get mad.
- 9:56Speaker 7: Get Chad.
- 9:57Speaker 6: Call Chad Jones Law at ninety seven nine five five thousand,
- 10:01Speaker 6: or go online to Chad Jones lawn dot com.
- 10:06Speaker 8: To say Connor Zilich had an amazing year in the
- 10:09Speaker 8: Xinity Series would be an understatement. Ten wins, twenty three
- 10:13Speaker 8: top tens, twenty top fives and he didn't win the championship.
- 10:17Speaker 9: I had a lot of texts and people coming up
- 10:19Speaker 9: to me Sunday in the garage when I was at
- 10:20Speaker 9: the racetrack, and that's just awesome to know that, you know,
- 10:23Speaker 9: people support me and like me and you know want
- 10:27Speaker 9: to be there for me, because, yeah, in moments like that,
- 10:30Speaker 9: you want to be able to have that kind of
- 10:32Speaker 9: sense of you know, just people believing in you and
- 10:36Speaker 9: still you know, appreciating what you did, because you know,
- 10:39Speaker 9: those moments are tough, and I didn't know really how
- 10:42Speaker 9: to deal with it, and I've never been through something
- 10:44Speaker 9: like that before. So a weird couple of days, but yeah,
- 10:47Speaker 9: a lot of great people in our sport reaching out
- 10:50Speaker 9: and just offering me some advice. And yeah, so you
- 10:53Speaker 9: need an fiaa license to run a hypercar and WEC
- 10:58Speaker 9: and I was supposed to go to Bahrain to do
- 11:00Speaker 9: a test. But because of the points system, you know,
- 11:04Speaker 9: you get ten points to win the Xfinity Championship in
- 11:07Speaker 9: eight per second, and I needed ten points to get
- 11:10Speaker 9: to the you know, the fourteen needed. Because I didn't
- 11:13Speaker 9: win the championship, I didn't have enough points. In hindsight,
- 11:16Speaker 9: didn't get a license to go run the hypercar and WAC.
- 11:20Speaker 9: But I can still do IMSA, So you know, I'll
- 11:22Speaker 9: just have a little bit less testing time before I
- 11:24Speaker 9: get to Daytona in two weeks and then you know,
- 11:27Speaker 9: hopefully if all goes well, I'll be able to go
- 11:29Speaker 9: do the twenty four in you know, the top class.
- 11:32Speaker 8: You're on the final app Hi, I'm Kylie, I'm John.
- 11:36Speaker 2: And I'm Garrison.
- 11:36Speaker 10: And a little thing we love about the thirty count

- 11:44Speaker 10: gifts and of course we go and pick up our
- 11:46Speaker 10: family's favorite nuggets.
- 11:47Speaker 12: Every nugget is tasty times quad billion, and we get
- 11:50Speaker 12: all the sides.
- 11:51Speaker 11: Yeah, the Oui Gui mac and cheese is.
- 11:53Speaker 7: A big hit.
- 11:53Speaker 13: Everyone from one to one hundred and sixteenth would love
- 11:56Speaker 13: Chick Flea Chicken Nuggets.

- 12:35Speaker 15: Three hours before kickoff of every Eggy football game, It's
- 12:39Speaker 15: the Courney's Pub.
- 12:41Speaker 7: Game, Dasha.
- 12:41Speaker 15: All of this and more up to you by Texa's
- 12:44Speaker 15: on the.
- 12:44Speaker 16: Zone Rosetta Sweet Coretti, Fy she thought she was a Lena? Yeah, okay,
- 13:14Speaker 16: Jujubody was Ana, but didn't you?
- 13:22Speaker 17: Joe Joseph dis dues on Arizona Los Calefon.
- 13:31Speaker 1: If you saw Peter Jackson's Beatles documentary. The way this
- 13:36Speaker 1: song was written just exemplified the genius of that group.
- 13:44Speaker 1: I mean, it was unbelievable to see them sitting around
- 13:49Speaker 1: in the studio and boom, a song was written.
- 13:55Speaker 7: Just like that.
- 13:57Speaker 1: Glad to have you with us here on a two stay.
- 14:00Speaker 1: Coming up, we have a high school report. We have
- 14:03Speaker 1: author Matthew Davis. His book is called Biography of a Mountain,
- 14:10Speaker 1: The Making and Meaning of Mount Rushmore. I think it's
- 14:15Speaker 1: really interesting and some of you may think it's interesting
- 14:20Speaker 1: as well. We'll visit with Matthew Davis. Coming up. We're
- 14:23Speaker 1: gonna hear from Kirby Smart coming up. Mallory is here
- 14:29Speaker 1: with some entertaining entertainment news.
- 14:33Speaker 9: All of that.
- 14:34Speaker 1: But a little bit earlier today around lunchtime, Marcel Reid
- 14:40Speaker 1: visited with reporters changed the last few weeks from washing
- 14:47Speaker 1: into basketball game.
- 14:48Speaker 18: The other day, taking pictures of your five seconds and
- 14:51Speaker 18: are you aware of this chance thing that's taking over
- 14:54Speaker 18: or saying your message boards YouTube and around campus.
- 14:58Speaker 17: Yeah, a little bit. Definitely get a little bit more recognition,
- 15:03Speaker 17: you know. I don't think too much of it. I
- 15:05Speaker 17: think it's just fans supporting players, which is pretty cool
- 15:08Speaker 17: to see. I've seen the chance thing pop up. At first,
- 15:11Speaker 17: I was just seeing like comments and saying Chance. I
- 15:13Speaker 17: was like, I don't know what this is. Then I
- 15:14Speaker 17: saw like a picture of my face, and then I
- 15:17Speaker 17: said Chance. I was like, Okay, I kind of understand
- 15:19Speaker 17: it now. But yeah, I feel like it's just, you know,
- 15:22Speaker 17: the things that come with, you know, being a starting
- 15:23Speaker 17: quarterback in the SEC. So I've kind of taken it
- 15:26Speaker 17: all in. Uh, you know, I told I told my
- 15:30Speaker 17: dad this, and uh, you know, even my agents. At
- 15:33Speaker 17: the end of the day, you know, I came to
- 15:34Speaker 17: play football just because it's the love of the game.
- 15:36Speaker 17: Like I never expected to get nil when I first
- 15:38Speaker 17: came to college or do any of those things. So,
- 15:42Speaker 17: you know, I go out here and play the game
- 15:44Speaker 17: I've been playing since I was five years old, just
- 15:46Speaker 17: to have fun, you know, because that's what the game
- 15:48Speaker 17: is all about.
- 15:48Speaker 19: How do you deal with the now, the Heisman, trophy
- 15:51Speaker 19: stuff around you. Is that something you embrace and enjoy
- 15:54Speaker 19: it or is it something that you just try to
- 15:57Speaker 19: try to ignore and play.
- 15:59Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 16:00Speaker 17: Uh, you know, definitely embrace it a little bit and
- 16:02Speaker 17: enjoyed it a little bit because you know, it's great
- 16:05Speaker 17: to to get recognition like that, but you know, I
- 16:09Speaker 17: kind of have to push it aside just because you know.
- 16:11Speaker 7: None of that all matters until it did matter.
- 16:13Speaker 17: So until you know the Heisman ceremony comes, it's not
- 16:17Speaker 17: really on my mind focused on you know, winning one
- 16:20Speaker 17: game each week, and right now we got so Socc
- 16:23Speaker 17: Carolina coming up, so that's what I'm focused on.
- 16:25Speaker 19: And I know that you have Jefferson stro Jefferson Street
- 16:29Speaker 19: Joe Gillim's jersey in your room. Is that because you
- 16:32Speaker 19: just thought it was a cold jersey or is there
- 16:34Speaker 19: any inspiration behind?
- 16:35Speaker 7: Uh?
- 16:36Speaker 17: I think really it was kind of my dad that
- 16:39Speaker 17: gave it to me.
- 16:40Speaker 7: And I always knew who Joe Gilm was.
- 16:41Speaker 17: You know, went this football camps that he had when
- 16:43Speaker 17: I was younger that he hosted at Tennessee State. But
- 16:46Speaker 17: you know, my dad got one for me and he
- 16:50Speaker 17: told me to where it pose it and I think
- 16:52Speaker 17: I did it like one time. But uh, you know,
- 16:54Speaker 17: I'm not really a Steelers fan, so I'm not I
- 16:57Speaker 17: don't want to wear a Steelers jersey all the time.
- 17:00Speaker 19: So there's nothing like, hey, his story is inspiration or anything.
- 17:03Speaker 7: Like oh, story, a story.
- 17:04Speaker 17: Definitely definitely an inspiration and you know that's that's a
- 17:08Speaker 17: quarterback that you know, I look up to just because
- 17:10Speaker 17: of you know, the barriers that he broke, and you know,
- 17:13Speaker 17: just be an African American. You know, you didn't always
- 17:15Speaker 17: see that growing up as a kid, that there's African
- 17:17Speaker 17: American quarterbacks.
- 17:18Speaker 7: So definitely kind of look up to.
- 17:20Speaker 17: Him and you know all the other ones who were
- 17:23Speaker 17: alongside him as well.
- 17:24Speaker 13: After the Missouri game, coaches mentioned that you checked into
- 17:27Speaker 13: the or audibled into the screen pass for for Casey
- 17:31Speaker 13: when he made that. Uh, we're talking a little bit
- 17:34Speaker 13: about that development of getting able to have that freedom
- 17:38Speaker 13: to to call things and move things around in the line.
- 17:40Speaker 13: When when did that come around and what was the
- 17:43Speaker 13: process to get to be able.
- 17:45Speaker 7: To have that freedom?
- 17:46Speaker 17: Yeah, I mean it all just comes with, you know,
- 17:48Speaker 17: extra preparation. You know, as the years went on, uh
- 17:51Speaker 17: started to get you know, more and more heavy on
- 17:53Speaker 17: you know, just going in and sitting down with Klein
- 17:55Speaker 17: and understanding the game plan and you know, when we
- 17:57Speaker 17: see this look, what are we trying to get into?
- 17:59Speaker 7: What we don't want to run against this look?
- 18:00Speaker 17: So, uh, you know I saw the safety roll down
- 18:03Speaker 17: and you know it's obviously we're overloaded.
- 18:05Speaker 7: We can't block every single person.
- 18:07Speaker 9: Uh.
- 18:07Speaker 17: You know, sometimes they don't always bring all seven, but
- 18:09Speaker 17: at that time, fortunately they did bring all seven and
- 18:11Speaker 17: we got you know, all our guys through on the
- 18:13Speaker 17: old line, got case of.
- 18:14Speaker 7: The ball out quick and you know he went out
- 18:17Speaker 7: for forty eight.
- 18:17Speaker 13: So has there been any other plays this year that
- 18:19Speaker 13: you've checked into something that it's run for a touchdown?
- 18:22Speaker 3: Or is that the first one?
- 18:23Speaker 17: Can't recall? I probably I've checked into a couple of plays.
- 18:27Speaker 17: You know, there's there's, like I said, there's plays where
- 18:29Speaker 17: you know, we'll either have like a double call and
- 18:32Speaker 17: you know we'll see something if we want to get
- 18:33Speaker 17: out of it, we'll check to this h and have
- 18:36Speaker 17: a kill call. But you know, there's there's been definitely
- 18:40Speaker 17: plays like that this season. And you know, like I said,
- 18:43Speaker 17: it just all comes with game planning and you know,
- 18:45Speaker 17: understanding what the team's going to do.
- 18:46Speaker 20: You got able to avenge of some losses this year.
- 18:48Speaker 20: When I ask worried about South Carolina and you use
- 18:51Speaker 20: the word personal, is that like kind of that revenge
- 18:54Speaker 20: type in the back of your mind here when you
- 18:55Speaker 20: get ready.
- 18:56Speaker 7: For this week. Yeah, I think so.
- 18:58Speaker 17: I mean obviously you can't, you know, look back at
- 19:00Speaker 17: last year and and try to, you know, bring that
- 19:02Speaker 17: type of energy into it.
- 19:03Speaker 7: But it is personal.
- 19:05Speaker 17: You know, those were one of the teams that kind
- 19:06Speaker 17: of got us out of, you know, getting into the
- 19:08Speaker 17: playoffs last year and took us out of the US
- 19:10Speaker 17: Championship conversation.
- 19:12Speaker 7: So you know, I mean it's just one of one, I.
- 19:15Speaker 17: Know, mentality, and like I said, we have South Carolina
- 19:17Speaker 17: and you know that's what our focus is on, and
- 19:19Speaker 17: we're just going out there get another win. They're in
- 19:22Speaker 17: our way, just like every other team. So you're just
- 19:25Speaker 17: gonna go handle business as we can.
- 19:26Speaker 21: Other weeks still on and y'all, and y'all continue to
- 19:28Speaker 21: be undefeated, one of only three in the whole country.
- 19:31Speaker 21: What is what is the feeling around here? I know
- 19:33Speaker 21: you guys believed you could do it, but to be
- 19:35Speaker 21: this late in the season and be doing it, what
- 19:36Speaker 21: what does it mean to you guys?
- 19:38Speaker 7: Yeah, it obviously feels good.
- 19:40Speaker 17: It gives us just you know, the confidence that you
- 19:43Speaker 17: know you want to have going into each week knowing
- 19:45Speaker 17: that you're capable of beating any team that you go
- 19:47Speaker 17: against you know, and it's not false confidence, which is good. So, uh,
- 19:51Speaker 17: we're going into every week prepared and uh and knowing
- 19:55Speaker 17: that you know, the team in front of was like
- 19:56Speaker 17: I said, is it is in our way and we're
- 19:58Speaker 17: gonna go dominate them that you know, our best ability.
- 20:01Speaker 7: So it's just about.
- 20:02Speaker 17: Execution at the end of the day, and you know,
- 20:05Speaker 17: you know, focusing on the next game. You know, those
- 20:07Speaker 17: other nine are behind us now, so you know we
- 20:09Speaker 17: got three more, but we're focused on this one next
- 20:11Speaker 17: this week.
- 20:11Speaker 7: What does Tory and York bring to this team?
- 20:13Speaker 15: And can you appreciate how he calls the defense house.
- 20:18Speaker 7: When Yeah, Tory York brings a different type of leadership.
- 20:21Speaker 17: I mean, you guys just heard him talk about, you know,
- 20:23Speaker 17: how he prepares and how he's been watching.
- 20:25Speaker 7: Film since eighth grade. But I mean just the way
- 20:28Speaker 7: he does it.
- 20:28Speaker 17: Like he as soon as we get into the bus
- 20:31Speaker 17: or the plane after a game, he's looking at you know,
- 20:34Speaker 17: film for the next week, or looking at a scouter
- 20:37Speaker 17: report for the next week, or watching the game of
- 20:39Speaker 17: the team that we're about to play next week.
- 20:42Speaker 7: So I mean he takes it.
- 20:43Speaker 17: To another level and it's just great to see that
- 20:46Speaker 17: growth from him and you know how he's done it
- 20:48Speaker 17: all these years because you know, me and him are
- 20:50Speaker 17: so close. You know, we spend each other ready times
- 20:53Speaker 17: houses just sitting there talking ball and just you know,
- 20:56Speaker 17: just talking life at the same time, because you know,
- 20:58Speaker 17: we talked about this your freshman, about getting to this
- 21:02Speaker 17: position and what it's gonna take. And then it's gonna
- 21:04Speaker 17: be me and him because you know, he knew what
- 21:06Speaker 17: it took to be a starting linebacker to lead the defense,
- 21:08Speaker 17: and I knew what it took to be a starting
- 21:10Speaker 17: quarterback and leave the offense. So we're kind of just
- 21:13Speaker 17: you know, sailing ship on both ends. And uh, it's
- 21:16Speaker 17: just great to see because he brings it out of everybody.
- 21:18Speaker 17: I mean, he makes sure that you know, everybody's doing
- 21:20Speaker 17: the right thing. We're all held accountable, and that's why
- 21:22Speaker 17: you've seen so much success this year from us.
- 21:24Speaker 22: I assume you're you're a college football fan and watch.
- 21:27Speaker 7: Are there any Heisman.
- 21:28Speaker 15: Moments that you remember from players where they like that
- 21:31Speaker 15: Johnny Manziel and your plumble touchdown, or are there what's
- 21:34Speaker 15: your highest moment that you might remember as a fan?
- 21:39Speaker 17: Cam Newton's run against LSU and then you know, I
- 21:43Speaker 17: don't even think the little fumble pass was Johnny's best player.
- 21:46Speaker 7: I think you know, the run he had.
- 21:47Speaker 17: Against Mississippi State at Mississippi State was pretty fire. You
- 21:51Speaker 17: know when he hit he hit the Cam Newton celebration
- 21:53Speaker 17: with the this right here in screams. So I mean
- 21:55Speaker 17: that was pretty cool. Yeah, I mean there's shoot, I
- 22:00Speaker 17: can't really think any other ones off the top of
- 22:02Speaker 17: my head, but there's definitely a lot of people who've
- 22:04Speaker 17: had their Heisman moments, and so.
- 22:08Speaker 7: Let's just look out for my.
- 22:11Speaker 23: Is.
- 22:11Speaker 7: Have you have you ever struck the Hesman post? I haven't.
- 22:14Speaker 7: I haven't it. I mean, it'd be cool to do it.
- 22:18Speaker 7: I'm just waiting for the right time.
- 22:19Speaker 19: Look like, what are your teammates all have done it
- 22:21Speaker 19: for you?
- 22:21Speaker 17: Yeah, it's a little it's a little TikTok dance that
- 22:23Speaker 17: has it in it. But it's not you know, we're
- 22:25Speaker 17: not struck the Huysman post. It's gonna be me and
- 22:27Speaker 17: me only probably, So you you.
- 22:29Speaker 18: You were pretty close to coach KWin of course, just
- 22:32Speaker 18: you know, he was a Heisman finalist at one point.
- 22:34Speaker 18: Just what's maybe been some of his advice that he's
- 22:36Speaker 18: given you these last few weeks. Is you've had some
- 22:39Speaker 18: success here and your names in that conversation.
- 22:42Speaker 17: Yeah, I mean he just honestly just checks in on
- 22:44Speaker 17: me and ask me if I'm handling it as well,
- 22:48Speaker 17: you know, just you know, less as a coach, but
- 22:50Speaker 17: more as a you know, a friend. He's making sure
- 22:52Speaker 17: that this isn't too much of my shoulders and that
- 22:54Speaker 17: I'm still focused and stuff like that. So we sit
- 22:57Speaker 17: down every Sunday and talk about you know, the upcoming week.
- 23:00Speaker 17: Uh you know how he did the day before, and
- 23:02Speaker 17: just sit down and talk life and kind of understand
- 23:05Speaker 17: each other. So, you know, he's been a great coach,
- 23:07Speaker 17: a great mentor for me. Uh you know, like you said,
- 23:09Speaker 17: he was a Heisman finalist and so he's been through
- 23:11Speaker 17: through this before.
- 23:12Speaker 7: So uh, you know, just making sure that you.
- 23:14Speaker 17: Know, I'm grounded in the same place and just worrying
- 23:16Speaker 17: about them now is what he's been doing for me.
- 23:19Speaker 7: Who first called you the gingerbread man? And when did
- 23:21Speaker 7: that come around? I called myself the ginger bread Yeah.
- 23:25Speaker 7: When did you start calling yourself?
- 23:26Speaker 13: Though?
- 23:27Speaker 17: Probably about fifth grade? I used to call myself the
- 23:31Speaker 17: gingerbread man. Uh, you know, I call myself the dragonfly
- 23:35Speaker 17: at one point.
- 23:35Speaker 7: I don't know if you guys ever trying to hit
- 23:37Speaker 7: a dragon fly. It's pretty hard to do. I've never
- 23:39Speaker 7: touched that. What was your most gingerbread man moment? Maybe
- 23:43Speaker 7: this year before like this year, Uh.
- 23:51Speaker 17: Probably say Mississippi State where the little pump throw and
- 23:54Speaker 17: I was crazy.
- 23:54Speaker 7: I don't know how I did that, to be honest.
- 23:56Speaker 7: And then in high school, if you go see my
- 23:59Speaker 7: senior get highlights, I I.
- 24:01Speaker 17: Made a cut on two people and made three people
- 24:04Speaker 17: tackle each other in the game the state championship game.
- 24:07Speaker 17: Unfortunately we lost, but just going back and looking at
- 24:10Speaker 17: the highlight, it was just pretty cool to see.
- 24:12Speaker 20: So you've obviously had a lot of there's a lot
- 24:15Speaker 20: of work to be done here, but as somebody who
- 24:17Speaker 20: got doubted in the preseason, have you had a chance
- 24:19Speaker 20: at a human level to kind of sit back and
- 24:20Speaker 20: just look on what these year has been for you
- 24:23Speaker 20: personally and this team.
- 24:28Speaker 17: I mean yes and no, you know, haven't really just
- 24:30Speaker 17: enough step back and thought about, dang.
- 24:33Speaker 7: We're doing really well.
- 24:34Speaker 17: I mean I'm just kind of, like you know, taking
- 24:37Speaker 17: each win by the week and like I said, just
- 24:40Speaker 17: trying to focus on the next one. But obviously it's
- 24:43Speaker 17: been it's been pretty cool. You know, this is the
- 24:46Speaker 17: type of season that you dream of, and you know,
- 24:50Speaker 17: we're just doing everything that we can and keep it rolling.
- 24:53Speaker 17: And you know, it's amazing that we have all the
- 24:55Speaker 17: support and everybody traveling with us since you going.
- 24:58Speaker 7: To watch games and you see stage is clear out.
- 25:01Speaker 17: That brings so much joy to us, and you like,
- 25:03Speaker 17: people don't even understand it, and it's just it's it's
- 25:06Speaker 17: cool to be a part of not only a team,
- 25:09Speaker 17: but just a university net program like this.
- 25:11Speaker 13: There are some other quarterbacks around the country that have
- 25:13Speaker 13: caught your attention.
- 25:15Speaker 17: Uh, definitely, Uh, you know Tye Simpson, Fernando Mendoza, Uh honestly,
- 25:21Speaker 17: really just all the guys in the heis and Radz
- 25:23Speaker 17: right now, Julian Sand's done really well. But you know
- 25:26Speaker 17: Fernando H I trained up with him in Dallas this summer.
- 25:30Speaker 17: He was a pretty funny guy. And then tie a
- 25:34Speaker 17: little bit of history behind that. It's just like me
- 25:36Speaker 17: and him played on the same seven on seven team,
- 25:38Speaker 17: uh back in Tennessee. And then you know, growing up
- 25:42Speaker 17: our dad just to coach, coach each other, coach against
- 25:44Speaker 17: each other. He was his dad was the head coach
- 25:45Speaker 17: at UT Martin and mine was the head coach at
- 25:47Speaker 17: Tennessee State, which are votes in the OVC. So we
- 25:50Speaker 17: used to go back and forth to Martin, Tennessee and Nationhville, Tennessee.
- 25:52Speaker 7: Just UH with that. So you know, it's just.
- 25:55Speaker 17: It's just cool to see, you know, people you know
- 25:57Speaker 17: you have met and talked to, UH being so successful.
- 26:02Speaker 1: You know, I got to tell you when you see
- 26:03Speaker 1: Marcel Reid, when you see him in this situation, when
- 26:06Speaker 1: you see him postgame, answering questions, winsord losses, and there
- 26:13Speaker 1: haven't been any losses this year, this guy is what
- 26:19Speaker 1: you want as the face of your program. He is
- 26:23Speaker 1: exactly who you want representing your program and your university.
- 26:32Speaker 1: Remarkable young man, well taught, mature, and you know, the
- 26:39Speaker 1: team obviously feeds off of that. You can't ask for
- 26:46Speaker 1: a better guy leading this program than Marcel Reid. And
- 26:52Speaker 1: it's fun to watch. It's fun to see him grow
- 26:59Speaker 1: mature and and again the team. You know, it goes
- 27:03Speaker 1: without saying when when your guy is like this, UH,
- 27:09Speaker 1: players are playing for him. They respect him in the
- 27:12Speaker 1: locker room, and fans need to appreciate that because it
- 27:18Speaker 1: doesn't come along that often. Right, there's great guys in
- 27:23Speaker 1: college football.
- 27:24Speaker 7: There are.
- 27:25Speaker 1: I mean, it's it's fun to watch. It's fun to
- 27:28Speaker 1: see these guys. And and he's just he's a top
- 27:34Speaker 1: flight guy and there's still a lot of possibilities. Look,
- 27:44Speaker 1: I know, Johnny was Johnny and it didn't matter what
- 27:47Speaker 1: he did because of how remarkable he was on the field.
- 27:53Speaker 1: But there are obviously some embarrassing moments and issues unfortunately,
- 28:02Speaker 1: but you're not gonna get that with this kid. And
- 28:07Speaker 1: it's just it's fun to see him, fun to watch him,
- 28:10Speaker 1: fun to listen to him. I think he's more mature
- 28:15Speaker 1: and older beyond his years, and that's a big reason
- 28:21Speaker 1: why this team's undefeated right now. All right, coming up,
- 28:26Speaker 1: we're going to do us a high school report. We're
- 28:28Speaker 1: going to be joined by author Matthew Davis coming up
- 28:32Speaker 1: in this hour, So stay with us for that. Sefchek

- 28:53Speaker 1: when it gets cold. You can go in there to
- 28:57Speaker 1: the pumps and they will take care of you right
- 29:00Speaker 1: away with stuff like that.
- 29:03Speaker 5: You have more serious issues.
- 29:04Speaker 1: They have people on staff that can that know their

- 29:41Speaker 11: Oh?

- 31:07Speaker 22: Com welcome to The High School, report Im Matt, williams
- 31:22Speaker 22: and today we're going out to The Polaris funstoner phone
- 31:24Speaker 22: line to visit with the head of football coach for
- 31:25Speaker 22: The Huntsville Hornet's Todd.
- 31:27Speaker 1: Mavis it's great to have you.
- 31:28Speaker 7: Back how are you doing, today Good.
- 31:31Speaker 25: Matt thanks for having, me.
- 31:32Speaker 19: Sir.
- 31:32Speaker 23: Anytime as the season carries on into its last stage
- 31:35Speaker 23: the regular season at, least what are some lessons that
- 31:38Speaker 23: you learned in the early season that you're taking with
- 31:40Speaker 23: your team for this final.
- 31:41Speaker 25: Push you, KNOW i mean, again there's no. EXCUSE i
- 31:47Speaker 25: think there's some reasons why we're playing better football right.
- 31:51Speaker 25: NOW i, mean the reasons behind it is is that you,
- 31:54Speaker 25: KNOW i personally didn't even get On Townsville High school
- 31:58Speaker 25: to the first week Of, april you, know in the
- 32:00Speaker 25: head coaching, realm and trying to be able to change
- 32:04Speaker 25: schemes offensively and defensively and and create a. CULTURE i,
- 32:08Speaker 25: MEAN i would say in the coaching world that's that's relatively.
- 32:10Speaker 25: Late but you, know very fortunate to be. Here AND
- 32:14Speaker 25: i think that we've done a lot of great work
- 32:16Speaker 25: in a short period of. Time and you, know early
- 32:19Speaker 25: in the, season you, know schemes are, new and you,
- 32:23Speaker 25: know we just had to keep working through. It And
- 32:25Speaker 25: i'm real proud of our football. Team for you, know
- 32:28Speaker 25: their workmanlike attitude and being able to stay positive and
- 32:32Speaker 25: and continuing to grow their FOOTBALL iq and our new
- 32:35Speaker 25: schemes and you, know hopefully we're hitting our stride here
- 32:37Speaker 25: late in the.
- 32:38Speaker 23: Season, Yeah and what has been your toughest matchup this
- 32:43Speaker 23: season and what have you taken away from?
- 32:44Speaker 25: IT i, MEAN i think that every game has BEEN i,
- 32:49Speaker 25: Mean i've got tremendous respects for this. DISTRICT i, mean
- 32:53Speaker 25: it's been a dogfight every single, week you, KNOW i,
- 32:56Speaker 25: mean you, know it's JUST i think our team has,
- 33:01Speaker 25: grown you, know and their resiliency and they're poise and.
- 33:05Speaker 25: Composure you, know the two losses that we had in
- 33:10Speaker 25: district Against Port Natus grove And montgomery were very physical football.
- 33:14Speaker 25: Games we've out and played a tremendous first half AGAINST
- 33:17Speaker 25: p AND g and went to, halftime you, know that
- 33:20Speaker 25: came out on, top and you know the second half
- 33:22Speaker 25: they had the momentum on their side and we weren't
- 33:24Speaker 25: really able to get it. Back montgomery game was you
- 33:28Speaker 25: know a little bit of the. Same did not necessarily
- 33:31Speaker 25: play our best, game and you know we're able to
- 33:34Speaker 25: rattle off three wins in a row here against very
- 33:37Speaker 25: tough opponents and we've won all three, games you, know
- 33:40Speaker 25: in different. Fashions so you, KNOW i, Mean i'm proud
- 33:43Speaker 25: of our football. TEAM i certainly think that you, know
- 33:45Speaker 25: we're battle tested and it have been in a lot
- 33:47Speaker 25: of different situations and and had to overcome a. LOT
- 33:51Speaker 25: i certainly think that we need to continue to get
- 33:53Speaker 25: better at the situational football, piece which is things that
- 33:56Speaker 25: you know that we're addressing on a daily, basis and
- 33:57Speaker 25: certainly what championship teams do in the.
- 33:59Speaker 23: Playoffs you Faced netherland last week and came out with a.
- 34:03Speaker 23: Victory talk to me a little bit about what went
- 34:05Speaker 23: down that. Game what do you think went well and
- 34:07Speaker 23: where do you think your team was.
- 34:08Speaker 7: CHALLENGED i, MEAN.
- 34:11Speaker 25: I think our our team was challenged in every. Facet
- 34:15Speaker 25: Because needland is a really good football. Team their record
- 34:18Speaker 25: doesn't show how good a team that they. ARE i,
- 34:21Speaker 25: think you, know you, know a couple of plays here or,
- 34:24Speaker 25: there you, know they win a couple of their, games
- 34:26Speaker 25: and now they're in playoff. CONTENTION i think that they
- 34:29Speaker 25: would be a playoff, team you know in a lot
- 34:31Speaker 25: of other, districts you, know in FIVE A division two
- 34:34Speaker 25: around the, state and so you, KNOW i think we
- 34:37Speaker 25: came out, early you, know got up to a fourteen point.
- 34:40Speaker 25: Lead they were again strong, team able to tie at fourteen,
- 34:43Speaker 25: fourteen and really kind of going into the second, half
- 34:46Speaker 25: we were able to stretch out our lead and scored
- 34:49Speaker 25: a couple of non offensive, touchdowns had fourteen points on,
- 34:52Speaker 25: defense and you, know our offense late there was able
- 34:55Speaker 25: to put it. Away and so, again you, KNOW i
- 34:59Speaker 25: mean we just the resiliency and poise and just our,
- 35:02Speaker 25: guys you, know trying to find a way to.
- 35:04Speaker 23: Win and your next matchup is Against. Splendora what are
- 35:07Speaker 23: you expecting from that? Matchup and how do you think
- 35:09Speaker 23: your teams will mix on the.
- 35:10Speaker 25: Field i'm expecting it to be another you, know, physical
- 35:15Speaker 25: uh football. GAME i Mean splendora you, know probably didn't
- 35:20Speaker 25: have has not had the season that they. Expected at
- 35:23Speaker 25: the same, TIME i mean you turn on the video
- 35:25Speaker 25: and uh you, KNOW i mean there's there's explosive plays
- 35:27Speaker 25: all over the. Place they've got explosive. PLAYERS i, mean you,
- 35:31Speaker 25: know they're they're having kickoff returns returning it to, midfield
- 35:34Speaker 25: setting their offense up for great field. Position you, Know,
- 35:37Speaker 25: offensively they spread you out and and challenge you with
- 35:41Speaker 25: the space on the, field and they've got guys that
- 35:43Speaker 25: you can get the ball in their hands and they
- 35:45Speaker 25: can change the, game you, know in a. Hurry so you,
- 35:49Speaker 25: know we're just we've got to go out and be
- 35:51Speaker 25: the best version of us and and again try to
- 35:53Speaker 25: try to play situational football a lot.
- 35:55Speaker 14: Better m.
- 35:56Speaker 23: H and as you close out the regular, season how
- 35:59Speaker 23: do you keeping your program focused and locked in on you,
- 36:02Speaker 23: know this last game with playoffs right around the.
- 36:05Speaker 25: CORNER i, mean we've got another football game that's another district.
- 36:10Speaker 25: Game it's a you, know very, important you. KNOW i,
- 36:13Speaker 25: mean our expectation is to go out and, play you,
- 36:16Speaker 25: know our best game of the year because it's the tenth.
- 36:19Speaker 25: Game and and you, know we've got a, compressive progressive
- 36:23Speaker 25: competitive mindset that every opportunity we step out on the,
- 36:26Speaker 25: field we need to be better than we were the Last,
- 36:28Speaker 25: so you, KNOW i, mean we're fortunate enough in week
- 36:32Speaker 25: nine to be able to do a body of work
- 36:34Speaker 25: that will give us an opportunity to have three more
- 36:38Speaker 25: practices in another game next week in the. Playoffs BUT
- 36:41Speaker 25: i mean the main focus, is you, know what we
- 36:43Speaker 25: need to do tomorrow.
- 36:45Speaker 23: And what are your expectations for the. Playoffs how are
- 36:47Speaker 23: they different and more challenging than a regular season from
- 36:50Speaker 23: a mindset perspective or is it pretty consistent across the.
- 36:53Speaker 25: BOARD i, mean it's consistent across the. BOARD i, MEAN
- 36:57Speaker 25: i think the mindset is just an. UNDERSTANDING i, mean
- 36:59Speaker 25: you when you move, on if you, don't you go.
- 37:01Speaker 25: HOME i, mean you know there's nothing guaranteed after. That you,
- 37:06Speaker 25: know you get in the regular season and you, know
- 37:09Speaker 25: you start to play In. August you, know subconsciously you
- 37:12Speaker 25: know you've got you, know two more months of football
- 37:16Speaker 25: ahead of you and more practices and everything. ELSE i,
- 37:19Speaker 25: mean when you get into the, PLAYOFFS i, mean you
- 37:21Speaker 25: got three days of, practice you got a couple of,
- 37:23Speaker 25: walkthroughs and you're gonna go lay it down on the
- 37:24Speaker 25: line for forty eight minutes and you, know if you
- 37:26Speaker 25: come out on, top then you're gonna give yourself three
- 37:29Speaker 25: more practices another forty eight minute. Game if if you,
- 37:32Speaker 25: don't then you, know unfortunately your season's. Over so you,
- 37:36Speaker 25: KNOW i mean the margin FOR aer is something that
- 37:39Speaker 25: has been very small in our. District that's that's what
- 37:42Speaker 25: we've been able to you, know have to respect and
- 37:45Speaker 25: understand and you, know the margin for air in the
- 37:47Speaker 25: in the playoffs is even smaller because if you don't
- 37:50Speaker 25: come out on, top then you, know LIKE i, said
- 37:52Speaker 25: the last opportunity that you've had to be on the
- 37:54Speaker 25: field with the senior class.
- 37:56Speaker 23: That you have absolutely thank you so much for your, time.
- 37:59Speaker 25: Coach, yeah thank, You, Matt thanks for Going, yes.

- 42:43Speaker 11: You i'm doing, great. Chick thanks for having me. ON
- 42:46Speaker 11: i really appreciate.
- 42:46Speaker 1: It this is a fascinating. Book i've really enjoyed. It
- 42:51Speaker 1: where did you get the idea to write on this?
- 42:53Speaker 11: Subject, Yeah, so On july, third twenty, Twenty President trump
- 42:58Speaker 11: spoke At Mount rushmore and gave a speech with a
- 43:01Speaker 11: certain kind of vision Of american history and the memorials
- 43:03Speaker 11: and monuments that are built to commemorate. It AND i
- 43:06Speaker 11: didn't see the speech. Live WHEN i was reading about,
- 43:08Speaker 11: IT i just sort of was wondering why he decided
- 43:11Speaker 11: to give that speech and At Mount. Rushmore and so
- 43:14Speaker 11: did a little bit of a deeper dive into the.
- 43:15Speaker 11: Memorial it's its, history its, origins why it's in The Black,
- 43:19Speaker 11: hills who the sculpture, was what the controversies around it,
- 43:23Speaker 11: were and really just came to understand that a lot
- 43:26Speaker 11: of Our american, myths whether they're our westward, expansion our
- 43:31Speaker 11: search for, gold our relationship With native, communities our big
- 43:34Speaker 11: ambitions and creative, projects you, know these important words like
- 43:38Speaker 11: democracy and freedom and liberty that sort of are at
- 43:41Speaker 11: The memorial and course through us As, americans they're all
- 43:45Speaker 11: reflected in the story Of Mount. Rushmore so for me
- 43:47Speaker 11: it was a way to sort of learn about and
- 43:49Speaker 11: write About american. History through the lens of this.
- 43:51Speaker 1: Memorial you talk a lot About custer and kind of
- 43:56Speaker 1: the role he played in shaping that entire. Area did he?
- 44:00Speaker 11: Not, yeah he. DID i mean the story Amount rushmore
- 44:04Speaker 11: is closely tied To custer for two important. Reasons the
- 44:07Speaker 11: first Is custer led his Seventh cavalry on an expedition
- 44:11Speaker 11: through The Black hills in eighteen seventy, four and it
- 44:13Speaker 11: was the first expedition of Any americans through The Black
- 44:16Speaker 11: hills in, history and he was his assignment was to
- 44:22Speaker 11: look for a military for, it but everyone knew that
- 44:24Speaker 11: what he was really looking for was. Gold and he found.
- 44:27Speaker 11: Gold his expedition found. Gold and what that meant was
- 44:30Speaker 11: that at the, time The United states was really going
- 44:33Speaker 11: through kind of the equivalent of The Great. Depression there
- 44:36Speaker 11: was a lot of people unemployed. There it was called
- 44:39Speaker 11: The Financial panic of eighteen seventy, three and The United
- 44:42Speaker 11: states needed both morale boosting and also some economic. Salvation
- 44:47Speaker 11: and so the finding a gold really made miners want
- 44:51Speaker 11: to come into The Black. Hills and even though they
- 44:54Speaker 11: were technically not allowed to come, in The President ULYSSES.
- 44:57Speaker 11: S grant sort of relented and, said, LISTEN i can't
- 45:00Speaker 11: stopped miners from coming, In so it changed The Black
- 45:03Speaker 11: hills in that. Way and Then custer plays another important
- 45:07Speaker 11: role Because grant Ordered Native americans to go To american run,
- 45:13Speaker 11: reservations and he said that those that refused needed to
- 45:16Speaker 11: be quote unquote rounded. Up and So custer led The
- 45:20Speaker 11: Seventh cavalry to go round up those Recalcitrant Native. Americans
- 45:25Speaker 11: and what he encountered In montana at The Battle Little
- 45:29Speaker 11: bighorn In june of eighteen seventy six for a large
- 45:32Speaker 11: group Of lakota And Northern, cheyenne and When custer attacked
- 45:35Speaker 11: them and was, defeated that caused a great deal of
- 45:39Speaker 11: controversy back in The United states because at that time
- 45:43Speaker 11: THE us was celebrating At. Centennial when people learned about
- 45:46Speaker 11: the defeat Of custer at The battle A Little, bighorn
- 45:49Speaker 11: which The Native americans called The battle Of Greasy, grass
- 45:52Speaker 11: that enraged The United states and caused them to take
- 45:56Speaker 11: The Black hills Of South, dakota which is, where of
- 45:58Speaker 11: Course Mount rushmore is.
- 45:59Speaker 1: Today and And custer has always been painted in a
- 46:03Speaker 1: in a certain. Light you you write that it's a
- 46:07Speaker 1: little bit more complicated than. That, CORRECT i.
- 46:11Speaker 11: Think he's a really complicated. FIGURE i, mean and it
- 46:14Speaker 11: depends on what kind of light you're talking, about, chip
- 46:16Speaker 11: BECAUSE i think that some people view, him at least
- 46:19Speaker 11: they did at the time that he, died as kind
- 46:20Speaker 11: of this martyr of westward, expansion whereas you know today
- 46:24Speaker 11: many people sort of View custer as kind of not
- 46:29Speaker 11: not following, orders being, disobedient you, know being too too
- 46:35Speaker 11: aggressive in his. Actions and SO i think it depends
- 46:38Speaker 11: on who you talk to with regards to his. Legacy but,
- 46:41Speaker 11: CLEARLY i, MEAN i think with regards to the history
- 46:44Speaker 11: of The Black kills in that area of The United,
- 46:46Speaker 11: states he has an important, legacy whether or, not you,
- 46:49Speaker 11: know regardless of how you feel about him as a.
- 46:52Speaker 1: Person guts and Borglin is is the, face no pun,
- 46:58Speaker 1: intended Of Mount. Rushmore but he wasn't the guy that
- 47:02Speaker 1: had the original, idea was.
- 47:04Speaker 7: He.
- 47:06Speaker 11: No i'm so glad you asked this because this is
- 47:08Speaker 11: my favorite part of The rushmore. Story and the person
- 47:11Speaker 11: who had the original idea was a state, Historian Abount,
- 47:14Speaker 11: rushmore a guy Named Doan robinson who was very concerned
- 47:17Speaker 11: about the economic state Of South dakota in the nineteen.
- 47:20Speaker 11: Twenties the commodities and agricultural markets of the state had
- 47:24Speaker 11: tanked Following World War, one And Joan robinson wanted a
- 47:27Speaker 11: way to diversify the state's, economy and so he had
- 47:30Speaker 11: this idea to carve sculptures in The Black hills to
- 47:34Speaker 11: attract the burgeoning number of car tourists that were driving
- 47:37Speaker 11: around the. Area so his initial idea was to carve
- 47:40Speaker 11: characters that were reflective of The American, west people like
- 47:44Speaker 11: The Great Lakota, Leader Red, cloud Or, custer Or lewis
- 47:47Speaker 11: And clark Or, sakajuwea the guy who Led lewis And Clark.
- 47:51Speaker 11: West so that was his initial. Idea when he Hired
- 47:55Speaker 11: guns And borglum to do the, sculpting borglam changed it
- 47:58Speaker 11: into something that we see today that became quite frankly
- 48:01Speaker 11: more political than what the original intention.
- 48:03Speaker 1: Was Borg, Ludden you, right and WHAT i get from,
- 48:09Speaker 1: him he is the consummate artiste with with with everything
- 48:15Speaker 1: that goes with.
- 48:16Speaker 7: That was he?
- 48:17Speaker 4: Not he?
- 48:18Speaker 11: Was he. Was he was a very complicated, personality but
- 48:21Speaker 11: he was someone that was very. Demanding he was someone
- 48:24Speaker 11: that was very hard to work. With he was a,
- 48:26Speaker 11: perfectionist but he ALSO i, mean in some ways you,
- 48:30Speaker 11: know he Was he took credit when things went well
- 48:32Speaker 11: and blamed others when things went went. Poorly so he's
- 48:36Speaker 11: a complicated, figure but he certainly was a driving force
- 48:40Speaker 11: behind the, memorial and there's you, know it's hard to
- 48:44Speaker 11: imagine someone besides someone as ambitious and full of energy
- 48:49Speaker 11: as him getting this.
- 48:50Speaker 1: Done no matter what you think of the politics surrounding
- 48:54Speaker 1: it or everything that went on putting this, on it
- 48:58Speaker 1: is a rather remarkable piece of, art is it.
- 49:02Speaker 11: Not it is very classically. Beautiful, YEAH i, Mean borglin
- 49:06Speaker 11: was a trained. Artist he was someone that was very,
- 49:09Speaker 11: accomplished and so the works of art you see up,
- 49:12Speaker 11: there the faces were incredibly difficult to, achieve and they
- 49:19Speaker 11: are beautiful on their, own that is.
- 49:21Speaker 1: True how difficult was it getting this project? Done talk
- 49:26Speaker 1: to our listeners about the fact that several times it
- 49:30Speaker 1: ran out of money and this thing almost never, happened, right.
- 49:34Speaker 11: It almost never. Happened, yeah that's a great. Point it
- 49:37Speaker 11: did go through ups and downs of. Funding it.
- 49:39Speaker 25: Was.
- 49:39Speaker 11: Actually one of the ironies of this project is that
- 49:42Speaker 11: our most, conservative fiscally Conservative, President Calvin, coolidge was signed
- 49:47Speaker 11: the bill that federally funded the memorial before it was federally.
- 49:50Speaker 11: Funded they were really scraping to try to fund this.
- 49:53Speaker 11: Thing and even after it was federally, funded there were
- 49:57Speaker 11: other moments where went up and down in terms of.
- 50:00Speaker 11: Funding but once it got the funding from The United states,
- 50:02Speaker 11: government it became a bit more secure in its position
- 50:07Speaker 11: as a. Memorial and you, KNOW i think one of
- 50:09Speaker 11: the things that's interesting about it today is that federal
- 50:12Speaker 11: funding ran out in nineteen forty, one and so the
- 50:16Speaker 11: original vision of the memorial was to include the torsos
- 50:20Speaker 11: of the, presidents to include What borglum called a hall
- 50:24Speaker 11: Of records that would have original documents like The constitution
- 50:28Speaker 11: and The bill Of rights and other smaller busts Of
- 50:31Speaker 11: americans throughout. History and those visions were never realized because
- 50:36Speaker 11: the memorial ran out of the money and the money
- 50:38Speaker 11: was used to go Fight World War.
- 50:40Speaker 1: Two we almost Had susan. B anthony on that on
- 50:45Speaker 1: the face of that, mountain do we, Not.
- 50:47Speaker 11: Well that was there in the nineteen. Thirties there was
- 50:50Speaker 11: a real push to include her on the, mountain AND i,
- 50:53Speaker 11: think you, Know borglin was kind of coy and sort
- 50:57Speaker 11: of encouraging these speculations to try to get support for his.
- 51:00Speaker 11: Project but knowing deep down that there was not going
- 51:03Speaker 11: to be another person on the. Mountain he had who
- 51:07Speaker 11: he wanted to be on the, mountain and he was
- 51:09Speaker 11: not going to change.
- 51:11Speaker 1: That some of his history had been kind of erased
- 51:14Speaker 1: his biography because he was he had links and ties
- 51:18Speaker 1: to the ku Klux, Klan did he?
- 51:20Speaker 7: Not he.
- 51:21Speaker 4: Did.
- 51:22Speaker 11: Yeah his work Before Mount rushmore was At Stone Mountain
- 51:25Speaker 11: confederate Mem. Atlanta that was a project that was initially
- 51:28Speaker 11: run by THE Kkk borglum had very close ties with
- 51:32Speaker 11: its leadership and he, had you, know close affiliations with
- 51:36Speaker 11: its beliefs as, Well and that's something that part of
- 51:40Speaker 11: his biography is something that is not included At Mount.
- 51:43Speaker 1: Rushmore, uh there's a lot of, well everyone's, flawed, obviously
- 51:48Speaker 1: there's a lot of brilliant people that were. Flawed he
- 51:51Speaker 1: was one of, them was he?
- 51:52Speaker 11: Not he was incredibly. FLAWED i think that's exactly. Right
- 51:56Speaker 11: ship people are very. COMPLICATED i think it's you, know
- 51:59Speaker 11: one of the THINGS i meant in my book about
- 52:01Speaker 11: a Five mountain is just that maybe it shouldn't be
- 52:03Speaker 11: any other way, that you, know the creator of our
- 52:06Speaker 11: national memorial has so many of the same flaws as
- 52:10Speaker 11: our country.
- 52:10Speaker 1: Itself Matthew davis is the is the. Author the book
- 52:14Speaker 1: is CALLED A biography of A, Mountain The making And
- 52:17Speaker 1: meaning Of Mount. Rushmore it is really really. Good, matthew
- 52:21Speaker 1: thanks for the. TIME i really appreciate.
- 52:23Speaker 11: It, chip thank you so. MUCH i appreciate you having me.
- 52:25Speaker 1: On, yes sir. Again the book is out. Today it's
- 52:31Speaker 1: Through Saint Martin's, press and just a really terrific, history
- 52:38Speaker 1: lesson everything that it took when you think about it
- 52:43Speaker 1: took seventeen, years by the, way when you think about
- 52:49Speaker 1: what it took to do. THIS i don't know how
- 52:54Speaker 1: many of you have. Been It's. AMERICANA i think it's
