Transcript
- 0:00Hi everyone. Welcome to Mini Scroll, the
- 0:02daily Internet culture podcast bringing you the biggest stories
- 0:06from social media, the creator economy and the digital space.
- 0:09Every Monday to Thursday. I'm your host, Lauren Meisner,
- 0:13the founder of the youth digital media brand Centennial World.
- 0:16Welcome to Mini Scroll, everyone.
- 0:19Oh my God, this has felt like a seriously long time coming.
- 0:25I am so excited to be bringing you guys my daily podcast.
- 0:30I've been thinking about doing a daily podcast now for quite a
- 0:33while. For honestly a couple of years
- 0:35some of my favorite podcasts have been daily podcasts.
- 0:38Sorry I just ran up my stairs 'cause I'm like running late to
- 0:41get this going and now I'm like, so out of breath.
- 0:44But yes, I have been thinking about doing a daily podcast for
- 0:47a long time. It just never really made sense.
- 0:49And then now with the opportunity to be kind of doing
- 0:53things on my own, in my own schedule, on my own program, I
- 0:57just thought, why not? Why not bring you guys the news
- 1:00every single day for Internet culture?
- 1:03So the way that this will work is Monday to Thursday, with the
- 1:06exception obviously of this week because it was Easter.
- 1:09But Monday to Thursday I will bring you between one and three
- 1:12stories. So these will be stories that
- 1:15are on the Internet, on TikTok, on YouTube and the creator
- 1:18economy, social media, whatever it is today.
- 1:20I do have three stories for you guys because it's a long weekend
- 1:23and it's the first episode. I wanted to like kick it off
- 1:25with a bang. But yes, that will be the
- 1:27schedule every single day. It will be like the top story or
- 1:31two or three that you need to know from the day before.
- 1:34As you guys know, if you've listened to our podcast for a
- 1:36long time, like sometimes there's so much news happening
- 1:38and sometimes there's not a lot. So that's kind of what the
- 1:42general plan will be. And the episodes will be between
- 1:4510 and 15 minutes and they will be much chattier, much more off
- 1:48the cuff than Infinite Scroll. If you listen to Infinite
- 1:51Scroll, then you'll have already heard all of this over the last
- 1:53couple of weeks with me teasing Mini Scroll.
- 1:55But yes, that is the plan. So I am so, so, so excited to be
- 2:00doing this. Please, if you like this
- 2:03episode, if you like the idea of mini Scroll, a daily podcast, it
- 2:06will mean so much to me. If you could rate, review and
- 2:09subscribe, it will help my podcast grow, the YouTube
- 2:12channel grow. I'm going to be posting all of
- 2:15these episodes as well on Tiktok on our infinite scroll podcast
- 2:18Tiktok. So that will be like 10 minutes
- 2:21from the episode. Ideally these episodes will be
- 2:2310 minutes long, but sometimes I'm sure they'll be over,
- 2:25especially if I end up talking about like content that I
- 2:28watched or whatever. But anyways, they'll like bulk
- 2:31of the episode. They'll like a meat of the
- 2:32episode will be on Tiktok every single day as well.
- 2:35So the first story that I have for you guys today is that
- 2:37Beyoncé's Cowboy Carter is causing a divide on TikTok.
- 2:42So on March 29th, Beyoncé released her 8th studio album
- 2:45Cowboy Carter, the 2nd installment in her trilogy of
- 2:49albums. Interesting tidbit here.
- 2:51Beyoncé said she originally planned to release Cowboy Carter
- 2:54ahead of Renaissance in 2022, but the quote heaviness of the
- 2:58pandemic LED her to change the order of albums.
- 3:02In a statement on Instagram, Beyoncé said that Cowboy Carter
- 3:05took her five years to create and that the album was quote
- 3:08born out of an experience that I had years ago when I did not
- 3:11feel welcomed and it was very clear that I wasn't.
- 3:14Though she didn't say exactly what this experience was, it's
- 3:18likely she's referring to her 2016 appearance at the CMA
- 3:21Awards where she performed daddy lessons off her album Lemonade
- 3:25alongside the Dixie Chicks, who are now known as the Chicks.
- 3:29Beyoncé received racist backlash for this performance, and these
- 3:34racists also called to boycott the CMA S after her performance.
- 3:39The CMA S wiped all mention of Beyoncé from their website.
- 3:43Though Beyoncé finished her Instagram post by saying, quote,
- 3:45this ain't a country album, this is a Beyoncé album.
- 3:48Many fans see this album as a response to that racist
- 3:51experience. Despite sharing this experience
- 3:54with us, Tik Tokers are at it with the rage baits.
- 3:59Now, I don't want to go too much into what people are
- 4:01specifically saying about the album because that's like really
- 4:04not the point. But for the context of this
- 4:07story, what you need to know is that there has been a lot of
- 4:10comparison between Cowboy Carter and Tortured Poets Department,
- 4:15which is Taylor Swift's new album that is not even out yet.
- 4:19OK, so creator Hope Sloop discussed this on TikTok.
- 4:23I don't want to take credit for this opinion, but comparing
- 4:26Beyoncé's album to Taylor Swift's, which we haven't even
- 4:30heard yet, is so dismissive of what Beyoncé literally just told
- 4:35us on her Instagram post. She told us that the album was
- 4:39born out of feeling ostracized and not welcomed in a certain
- 4:42space, and that space presumably being the whitewashed world of
- 4:46country music. So comparing her and her album
- 4:50to Taylor, who is a white girl with country music origins after
- 4:55she just released this incredibly vulnerable body of
- 4:58work and opened up about the experience that inspired that
- 5:01body of work. Like we're literally proving her
- 5:04point here. So you are the reason that she
- 5:07made this album. Stop it.
- 5:09Stop comparing Beyoncé and Taylor Swift.
- 5:11It feels so off. It's so icky and is so
- 5:15inappropriate, especially in the context of what Beyoncé has told
- 5:19us about this album and comparing it to an album that
- 5:22doesn't even fucking exist yet. The next story is that Billie
- 5:25Eilish is facing backlash for comments she made in a new
- 5:28Billboard article. I have a really hard time saying
- 5:31Billboard billboard. I'm actually working on my
- 5:35pronunciation and how I speak on the podcast because it's so
- 5:39freaking annoying. Anyways, Billy Eilish and her
- 5:42mother were profiled by Billboard about their
- 5:46sustainability initiatives. The piece was definitely press
- 5:50for her joint project with Reverb, which is called the
- 5:53Music Decarbonization Project, which quote, aims to ultimately
- 5:56eliminate carbon emissions created by the music industry.
- 5:59The profile was published over the weekend and the singer
- 6:02immediately faced backlash for allegedly throwing shade at
- 6:06Taylor Swift. Again, why do all roads lately
- 6:09lead back to Taylor Swift? So she said in this article,
- 6:14quote we live in this day and age where for some reason it's
- 6:16very important to some artists to make all sorts of vinyl and
- 6:19packaging, which UPS the sales and UPS the numbers and gets
- 6:23them more money and gets them more.
- 6:25I can't even express to you how wasteful it is.
- 6:27It is right in front of our faces and people are just
- 6:29getting away with it left and right.
- 6:31And I find it really frustrating as somebody who really goes out
- 6:34of my way to be sustainable and do the best that I can and try
- 6:37to involve everybody in my team and being sustainable.
- 6:40And then it's some of the biggest artists in the world
- 6:42making fucking 40 different vinyl packages that have a
- 6:45different unique thing just to keep you buying more.
- 6:47It's so wasteful and it's irritating to me that we're
- 6:49still at a point where you care that much about your numbers and
- 6:52you care that much about money making and it's all your
- 6:54favorite artists doing that shit.
- 6:57She kind of popped off there. Like it's literally so true.
- 7:01That was a criticism when Taylor first announced her new album
- 7:04and then she started immediately releasing these new additions.
- 7:06I think she has four or five now that she's released.
- 7:09And you know, her comments, honestly, Like her comments have
- 7:12been turned off on Taylor Swift, like the official Taylor Swift
- 7:15Instagram. But Taylor Nation have the
- 7:18comments turned on and people are just flooding those
- 7:21comments. Just saying, like, this is so
- 7:23wasteful. Like even fans being like, I'm a
- 7:25huge swifty, but this just feels like a cash grab.
- 7:27I'm just going to wait for the deluxe edition.
- 7:30I'm just going to wait for the stream on Spotify.
- 7:33Like, this is so unnecessary. So this is definitely part of a
- 7:36bigger conversation that people have been having not just about
- 7:39Taylor Swift, but, you know, celebrities in general.
- 7:42But this is definitely like, there's a big spotlight on
- 7:44Taylor Swift right now with her private jet stuff.
- 7:47And now all of, like, her different album releases.
- 7:49So this quote by Billy got the Swifties up in arms, thinking
- 7:53Billy was going after Taylor, given, like I said that so many
- 7:56of her albums have numerous additions with different vinyls,
- 7:59packaging, and merch associated. And then yesterday Billy took to
- 8:03Instagram to address the backlash.
- 8:05She wrote an Instagram Stories quote.
- 8:07OK, so it would be awesome if people would stop putting words
- 8:10into my mouth and actually read what I said in that Billboard
- 8:12article. I wasn't singling anyone out.
- 8:15These are industry wide systemic issues and when it comes to
- 8:18variants, so many artists release them, including me,
- 8:21which I clearly state in the article The climate crisis is
- 8:23now and it's about all of us being part of the problem and
- 8:26trying to do better. Sheesh.
- 8:28I mean, yeah, I think that's fair.
- 8:30I think it's actually pretty great that somebody who is as
- 8:36successful as Billy in the music industry is having these
- 8:39conversations, whether it's kind of like PRE or not, whatever.
- 8:44I think drawing attention to them and making fans consider
- 8:47what their faves are kind of doing and the impact that the
- 8:51music industry has on the environment, which is massive.
- 8:55We actually talked a little bit about that on our Taylor Swift
- 8:57episode a few weeks ago with Crystal.
- 8:59But yes, like, I think it's actually quite impactful for it
- 9:03to come from somebody like Billy because she is so popular, she's
- 9:07so successful, she's top of her game, and she's very culty.
- 9:11Like, she has, like that Gen. Z fan base that every artist is
- 9:15constantly trying to get. OK?
- 9:17And the last story that I have for you guys is the man who
- 9:21allegedly punched women in the face in New York City has been
- 9:24arrested after a viral TikTok video.
- 9:27So last week, TikTok influencer Hallie Kate posted a series of
- 9:31videos sharing that she had been punched in the face while
- 9:33walking on the sidewalk in Chelsea in New York City.
- 9:37Hallie said she was looking at her phone when the attack
- 9:39happened. Quote you guys, I was literally
- 9:41just walking and a man came up and punched me in the face, she
- 9:44said while showing like a big goose egg on her forehead.
- 9:47She said, Oh my God, it hurts so bad I can't even talk.
- 9:50Literally I fell to the ground and now this giant goose egg is
- 9:53forming. She also said when she fell to
- 9:55the ground that she blacked out for a second and the man was
- 9:58like standing over her screaming at her and it seemed to be that
- 10:01he was very irritated that she was on her phone.
- 10:04Halley's video has shed light on at least twelve other posts by
- 10:08women over the past month on TikTok, claiming that the same
- 10:11thing happened to them while walking in New York City.
- 10:14One day after Halley's video went viral, the NYPD announced
- 10:18that they had arrested a man in connection with her assault, 40
- 10:21year old Skiboki Stora, who has also built himself a TikTok
- 10:25presence primarily through videos where he intentionally
- 10:29harasses and follows women seemingly in an effort to scare
- 10:33them. So it does seem in this case
- 10:35with all the women coming forward that there is more than
- 10:38one puncher, like quote UN quote, but I think he is a
- 10:41frequent perpetrator and obviously the content that he
- 10:44posts publicly for people to see is already super scary, super
- 10:49problematic. However, I wanted to touch
- 10:51really quickly on the reception that Hallie received for posting
- 10:55this because basically she posted like a few different
- 10:57videos talking about the experience and then sharing like
- 11:00the follow up of you know, her going to the police station, her
- 11:02going to urgent care, all this stuff.
- 11:04And then I think it was either the same day or was the next
- 11:07day. She posted a video kind of
- 11:09making light of the situation, like she was on the street
- 11:12pretending to walk basically, like, without using her phone.
- 11:15And I I don't have the exact video here, but I think the
- 11:18caption said something like me, you know, walking undistracted,
- 11:21aware of my surroundings or whatever, 'cause that was like,
- 11:23the issue that this man had is that she was on her phone,
- 11:26apparently. Or that's the issue that he's at
- 11:27least claiming that he has. It's obviously just like an
- 11:30excuse to, you know, commit violence against women, but
- 11:34whatever. So people have been really
- 11:36unsupportive or like they don't really like the fact that she's
- 11:42been making fun of it. And it was so quick.
- 11:43And I saw like her, her comments just blew up with people being
- 11:46like, this is way too soon, Is this even real if you're already
- 11:49making fun of it and all this stuff.
- 11:51And to that, I just feel like it's obviously real, like this
- 11:54man, like they took, they found security footage of him, that's
- 11:56how they arrested him. So it obviously did happen.
- 11:59I think it's really fucked up to like question if we think that
- 12:02happened to her or not. But I think we can't really
- 12:05police how people deal with situations like this.
- 12:08Like if you were randomly attacked like that, so violently
- 12:11in the street as a woman, I think it would take a really
- 12:14long time to actually process what had happened to you.
- 12:17And I think it's OK to make jokes about things like that
- 12:21when it's at your own expense and it's like it's something
- 12:24that happened to you. I think it's part of her, like
- 12:26coping, it's part of her processing.
- 12:27Obviously she took to TikTok to share the whole thing.
- 12:29Anyways, we feel like we can police how we expect people to
- 12:33react to things that happened to them.
- 12:35And if they react in a way that we feel uncomfortable with, or
- 12:39we feel like we wouldn't do it that way, then automatically,
- 12:43oh, they're a liar. This doesn't add up to me.
- 12:46This must not be true. This was all just for clout and
- 12:48attention. And I think the naysayers, they
- 12:52have put been put to bed, like put to rest, put to bed,
- 12:54whatever that saying is because obviously he has been arrested.
- 12:58And I don't think there's any questions anymore if this
- 13:01actually happened or not. But the initial reaction to
- 13:04Hallie, like making light of this just rubbed me the wrong
- 13:07way. So I think that's something to
- 13:08think about, like when there's these kind of conspiracies going
- 13:12on, on TikTok about, you know, is this really true or not?
- 13:14Like, it's it's valid to question if what we see online
- 13:18is real or not, if it's just rage bait, if it's click bait,
- 13:21whatever. But I think there needs to be an
- 13:24element of empathy there as well.
- 13:26And we need to consider like, yes, just because she might not
- 13:29be reacting the way that we would react in that situation
- 13:32doesn't mean that it's not true. OK, OK, Well, that is it for the
- 13:39first episode of Mini Scroll. Thank you guys so much for
- 13:43listening. Please remember to rate, review
- 13:45and subscribe. It helps me so much.
- 13:48I love you guys and I will talk to you tomorrow.
- 13:51Bye.
