- 1:10Speaker 1: since the anniversary of a broadcasting masterpiece. Tuesday marked the
- 1:16Speaker 1: sixtieth anniversary of what I consider to be the greatest
- 1:19Speaker 1: work by a sports broadcaster of all time. It was
- 1:23Speaker 1: Vin Scully's radio broadcast of a Sandy Kofax perfect game.
- 1:28Speaker 2: Three times in his sensational career, as Sandy Kofax walked
- 1:34Speaker 2: out to the mound to pitch a fateful ninth where
- 1:38Speaker 2: he turned in a no hitter. But tonight September ninth,
- 1:42Speaker 2: nineteen hundred and sixty five, he made the toughest walk
- 1:46Speaker 2: of his career. I'm sure, because through eight innings he
- 1:49Speaker 2: has pitched a perfect game.
- 1:51Speaker 1: Note that Vin used the words perfect game. There's no
- 1:56Speaker 1: such thing as a broadcaster's jinx. Call of the ninth
- 2:00Speaker 1: inning was filled with vivid descriptions that perfectly captured the drama.
- 2:06Speaker 2: And you can almost taste the freshure. Now twenty nine
- 2:10Speaker 2: thousand people in the ballpark and a million butterflies.
- 2:14Speaker 1: And now here's Vin's call of the final.
- 2:16Speaker 2: Out, two and two, the Harvey Keane one strike away,
- 2:22Speaker 2: Sandy into his wind up. Here's the pitch.
- 2:25Speaker 3: Swung on in this the perfect game.
- 2:33Speaker 1: Scully did not speak for thirty eight seconds, he let
- 2:38Speaker 1: the roar of the crowd serve as his color commentator,
- 2:42Speaker 1: and when he finally did return to the mic, he
- 2:45Speaker 1: put the cherry on top of the Sunday.
- 2:49Speaker 2: On the scoreboard and right field. It is nine forty
- 2:52Speaker 2: six pm in the City of the Angels, Los Angeles, California,
- 2:58Speaker 2: and a crowd of twenty nine thirty nine just sitting
- 3:04Speaker 2: in to see the only pitcher in baseball history to
- 3:07Speaker 2: herald four no hit, no run games. He has done
- 3:10Speaker 2: it four straight years, and now he capped it on
- 3:15Speaker 2: his fourth no hitter. He made it up perfect games,
- 3:18Speaker 2: and Sandy Kopax, whose name will always remind you of strikeouts,
- 3:23Speaker 2: did it with a flourish. He struck out the last
- 3:27Speaker 2: six consecutive batteries. So when he wrote his name in
- 3:32Speaker 2: capital letters in the record books, that K stands out
- 3:35Speaker 2: even more than the oufax.
- 3:38Speaker 1: That K stands out even more than the oufax. What
- 3:43Speaker 1: an incredible summary. I've always maintained that if we were
- 3:47Speaker 1: there that night to write a story about the game,
- 3:50Speaker 1: and had several hours to choose every word carefully, our
- 3:54Speaker 1: stories would not compare to what the Dodgers broadcaster ad
- 3:58Speaker 1: libbed well brought casting it live like Sandy Kofax that night.
- 4:03Speaker 1: Vin Scully was perfect. If you would like to hear
- 4:07Speaker 1: the entire ninth inning, just search for Vin Scully, Sandy Kofax.
- 4:12Speaker 1: You'll see a link on MLB dot com and YouTube.
- 4:16Speaker 1: Now let's get to my first guest. First and ten
- 4:19Speaker 1: Browns at their own twenty five thrash goes in motion.
- 4:23Speaker 1: Placo fakes a handoff and he gets sacked night knocked
- 4:28Speaker 1: down by Trey Hendrickson, who led the NFL with seventeen
- 4:32Speaker 1: and a half of them a year ago, and he's
- 4:34Speaker 1: got his first one in twenty twenty five.
- 4:36Speaker 4: Seventeen and a half two years in a row, thirty
- 4:39Speaker 4: five two year total. He is a premier pass rushery.
- 4:44Speaker 1: After a lengthy contract negotiation, the Bengals, an all pro
- 4:47Speaker 1: edge rusher, Trey Hendrickson, agreed to erase this season thirteen
- 4:52Speaker 1: days before the season opener. That led to speculation that
- 4:55Speaker 1: Trey would be on a quote unquote pitch count in
- 4:58Speaker 1: Week one. That did not turn out to be the case.
- 5:02Speaker 1: Trey played the most snaps of any Bengals defensive lineman
- 5:05Speaker 1: and played them well. He's PFF's ninth highest graded Edge
- 5:09Speaker 1: player after one week and for what it's worth, Shamar
- 5:12Speaker 1: Stewart is seventh. I talked to Trey about his performance,
- 5:17Speaker 1: Schamar's performance and why he doesn't wear gloves. Trey, after
- 5:23Speaker 1: having just a few training camp practices, you played fifty
- 5:26Speaker 1: seven snaps in the opener, You had eight quarterback pressures.
- 5:30Speaker 1: You had a huge impact on the game. Al Golden said,
- 5:33Speaker 1: that's an amazing human being to be able to do that.
- 5:36Speaker 1: Were you essentially telling the coaches to leave you out there?
- 5:40Speaker 5: It was something that the you know, game dictated. Every
- 5:44Speaker 5: drive is important. I think every drive is important in
- 5:47Speaker 5: every game, but specifically we were in must win situations
- 5:50Speaker 5: if we want to go where we want to go.
- 5:52Speaker 6: This season, big start being in division.
- 5:56Speaker 5: And on the road. So, you know, it was something
- 5:58Speaker 5: that I love this team. I've said that this whole offseason.
- 6:02Speaker 5: I had great work at the d one point of
- 6:05Speaker 5: Vidro with Chase he was my trainer there, and then
- 6:09Speaker 5: coming here I got to work out with Pat at
- 6:11Speaker 5: Black Cheap and then obviously finishing the job with Joey
- 6:15Speaker 5: in House. So I had a great offseason something I
- 6:19Speaker 5: was very proud of. I know my wife was very
- 6:22Speaker 5: proud of the way I worked as well. So considering
- 6:25Speaker 5: all those things and working out and then getting a
- 6:27Speaker 5: win and me having to play fifty seven snaps, I
- 6:31Speaker 5: do it again.
- 6:32Speaker 1: The defense held Cleveland to sixteen points, you got two takeaways.
- 6:36Speaker 1: What did the defense do best in the win?
- 6:39Speaker 5: I think we're just creating an identity of what kind
- 6:42Speaker 5: of brand of football we're going to play. And we're
- 6:44Speaker 5: far from where we want to be. There's a lot
- 6:47Speaker 5: on film that we have to get corrected. But anytime
- 6:50Speaker 5: you're learning with a win, that's a good thing. In
- 6:52Speaker 5: the National Football League, we're.
- 6:54Speaker 1: Visiting the Trey Hendrickson throughout training camp, you could be
- 6:56Speaker 1: seen constantly giving pointers to Shamar Stewart. What'd you think
- 7:00Speaker 1: of his debut?
- 7:02Speaker 5: You know, I think he's got an exceptional amount of talent.
- 7:06Speaker 5: I think that's what the guys in this building obviously
- 7:10Speaker 5: have seen in the recruiting process of bringing him to
- 7:12Speaker 5: be a part of the Cincinnati Bengals.
- 7:14Speaker 6: So the potential is there.
- 7:16Speaker 5: Jerry's doing a good job of tapping that potential and
- 7:20Speaker 5: everything that it comes with, and as he continues to
- 7:23Speaker 5: learn of what our brand of football is, I know
- 7:25Speaker 5: his production will improve.
- 7:27Speaker 1: Jerry coaches hard.
- 7:28Speaker 6: Do you like it? Yeah?
- 7:30Speaker 5: I think Jerry's a great coach. His reputation around the
- 7:34Speaker 5: league speaks volumes. Great person, great coach, fun to work with.
- 7:39Speaker 5: He is an intelligent mind when it comes to run schemes,
- 7:42Speaker 5: how to break them down, how to make it identifiable,
- 7:45Speaker 5: to slow the game down. So for me as a player,
- 7:48Speaker 5: I've been with three different defensive line coaches, and you know,
- 7:52Speaker 5: all of them in their own rights, have been elite.
- 7:55Speaker 1: Charlie Goldsmith wrote a great story about how you, during
- 7:59Speaker 1: the period where you were watching practice but not taking part,
- 8:02Speaker 1: reached out to Jerry and said, let's meet every morning
- 8:05Speaker 1: at five thirty am so you could learn basically what
- 8:09Speaker 1: he was working on with the defensive line. Five thirty
- 8:12Speaker 1: am meetings with the coach.
- 8:14Speaker 6: Well, you know it was.
- 8:16Speaker 5: It was an interesting time for me and I wanted
- 8:18Speaker 5: to do more. So the more I would be able
- 8:20Speaker 5: to learn the defense. Obviously I could teach from in
- 8:25Speaker 5: that situation I was in, so I could actually give
- 8:28Speaker 5: to the guys and be speaking the same language and
- 8:30Speaker 5: being all on the same page, not just you know,
- 8:34Speaker 5: out there just to be out there, you know, like
- 8:36Speaker 5: having a purpose. While I was out there, all of us,
- 8:39Speaker 5: like I said, collectively speaking the same language. So it
- 8:42Speaker 5: was important to me to learn this defense. You know,
- 8:45Speaker 5: didn't know what the future held, but I wanted to
- 8:47Speaker 5: lean in to the qualities that my wife and I carry,
- 8:50Speaker 5: which is when we're all in, we're all.
- 8:52Speaker 6: In, you know.
- 8:52Speaker 5: And that's something that I have made clear since the
- 8:56Speaker 5: beginning of this off season is that I love the
- 8:58Speaker 5: Cincinnati Bengals and I want to.
- 9:00Speaker 6: Be all in for them, no matter what that looks like.
- 9:03Speaker 1: Do you always get up that early or did you
- 9:06Speaker 1: do it specifically in order to meet with Jerry before
- 9:08Speaker 1: he had other stuff to do.
- 9:10Speaker 5: Well, meetings were happening, you know, pretty early here during
- 9:14Speaker 5: camp because there was a quick turnaround for practice for
- 9:17Speaker 5: training camp, so there was a limited amount of time
- 9:20Speaker 5: because obviously when my son was awake in the afternoon
- 9:23Speaker 5: when we all went home, I wanted to spend a
- 9:25Speaker 5: little bit of time with him, not meet after so alarm.
- 9:29Speaker 6: Clock getting a little early. You know, it is what
- 9:33Speaker 6: it is.
- 9:33Speaker 5: We're in the National Football League, you know, I needed
- 9:36Speaker 5: to catch up for months of time away, and I
- 9:40Speaker 5: think we did a great job, the professional professionalism of
- 9:45Speaker 5: Jerry to do that for me. During the circumstances, and also,
- 9:49Speaker 5: you know there was a mutual respect there where we
- 9:52Speaker 5: all wanted.
- 9:52Speaker 6: To get better and I could help in any way
- 9:54Speaker 6: I could try.
- 9:55Speaker 1: You're a four time Pro bowler, you were a first
- 9:57Speaker 1: team All Pro member, last year, runner up for NF
- 10:00Speaker 1: Defensive Player of the Year, NFL sacks leader. It's a
- 10:03Speaker 1: heck of a list. What's next? What are you determined
- 10:06Speaker 1: to do going forward?
- 10:08Speaker 5: I want to be the best Trey Hendrickson I can be,
- 10:10Speaker 5: and all those accolades aside.
- 10:12Speaker 6: I want to glorify the Lord with my play.
- 10:15Speaker 5: God has been so gracious to me with the game
- 10:17Speaker 5: of football and my walk personally from high school, college
- 10:21Speaker 5: in the NFL and now being in my ninth year
- 10:23Speaker 5: in the NFL. These are the things I talked about
- 10:26Speaker 5: with my dad when I was six years old, like
- 10:28Speaker 5: every six year old talks about, and having a son.
- 10:31Speaker 5: Now myself puts it in perspective. You know, this is
- 10:34Speaker 5: also a long offseason to spend time with family and reflect.
- 10:38Speaker 6: I know I have a lot of work to continue
- 10:39Speaker 6: to do.
- 10:40Speaker 5: I know I have a lot of gas in the
- 10:41Speaker 5: tank and tread on the tires, so I'm excited for
- 10:44Speaker 5: the future. But I've never played for the accolades. I
- 10:47Speaker 5: never played for the statistics. I want to help my
- 10:49Speaker 5: team win. I want to play as hard as I
- 10:51Speaker 5: can and let the trips fall where they may. And
- 10:54Speaker 5: I know it's been five years of saying that, it
- 10:56Speaker 5: is the truth, and I have high spectations for myself
- 11:01Speaker 5: because of the way I work and the way I
- 11:02Speaker 5: conduct myself.
- 11:03Speaker 6: And you know, but that's something that every.
- 11:07Speaker 5: Week, giving it your all with the win in mind
- 11:10Speaker 5: and helping the team the statistics or the byproduct.
- 11:13Speaker 1: The ruler of the jungle this week is Sam Hubbard,
- 11:16Speaker 1: your teammate, your former running mate, is the two defensive ends.
- 11:20Speaker 1: What did you respect about Sam when you two guys
- 11:22Speaker 1: played together.
- 11:23Speaker 5: There's so many things I could say what I respect
- 11:26Speaker 5: about him, but I think, you know, he embodied what
- 11:28Speaker 5: being a Bengal was on and off the field, and
- 11:31Speaker 5: I think he was a leader through and through, you know,
- 11:34Speaker 5: first in line, always an example of what it looked
- 11:37Speaker 5: like to be a football player, give a one hundred
- 11:40Speaker 5: percent effort all the time, and his character was second
- 11:43Speaker 5: to none. You know, he was a guy that you
- 11:46Speaker 5: could always rely on, always trust, knew what to do
- 11:49Speaker 5: and did it to a high level, and I have
- 11:51Speaker 5: a tremendous amount of respect for him and the friendship
- 11:53Speaker 5: I'm going to have with him for years to come
- 11:55Speaker 5: because of the things he taught me as a player
- 11:58Speaker 5: and obviously hopefully the things I taught him.
- 12:00Speaker 1: He told me you reached out and asked him to
- 12:03Speaker 1: look at the tape, give you some pointers after week one?
- 12:05Speaker 3: Will he?
- 12:07Speaker 5: You know, I think that football will always be a
- 12:09Speaker 5: part of his life. It'll always be a part of
- 12:11Speaker 5: my life. There's always a day where we won't be
- 12:15Speaker 5: able to play, and whether that's ye're one for some
- 12:18Speaker 5: guys or you're fifteen for other guys, there's a day
- 12:21Speaker 5: where we take off the pads and you know, sometimes
- 12:25Speaker 5: in life it comes sooner than later. And you know,
- 12:27Speaker 5: for him to handle it with the amount of like
- 12:30Speaker 5: I respect the way he handled it and everything that
- 12:33Speaker 5: he has and a tremendous life looking forward to ahead
- 12:36Speaker 5: of him.
- 12:36Speaker 6: But yeah, it's a it's.
- 12:40Speaker 5: A cool thing, you know that for him to you know,
- 12:42Speaker 5: we talk ball, and we will always talk ball, and
- 12:45Speaker 5: I always want his opinion because he gave it to
- 12:47Speaker 5: me on Monday mornings after the game, we would talk
- 12:50Speaker 5: about football.
- 12:51Speaker 6: So he's a He's a part of.
- 12:53Speaker 5: The Cincinnati Bengals culture that we're going to continue on here.
- 12:58Speaker 1: Another teammate and friend is Josepho's. He had an awesome
- 13:01Speaker 1: response when I asked about you during your contract impass.
- 13:05Speaker 1: Here's what he said. The defense needs him. You feel
- 13:09Speaker 1: his presence when he's out there. Ask any offensive lineman
- 13:13Speaker 1: in the league. When trade lines up in front of
- 13:15Speaker 1: you with his tinted face, mask, no gloves, long sleeves
- 13:18Speaker 1: and tights, you know you've got war the whole game.
- 13:23Speaker 1: What's your reaction to that quote.
- 13:25Speaker 5: I love Joseph, He's been He was my first rookie
- 13:29Speaker 5: as a VET, you know, not to say that being
- 13:31Speaker 5: year four in New Orleans was an a vet, but
- 13:34Speaker 5: I came here for a purpose, and obviously he was
- 13:38Speaker 5: the first defensive end that I was able to inherit
- 13:42Speaker 5: a meaning was drafted to us in our room also
- 13:46Speaker 5: Cam sample, but to take him under my wing in
- 13:49Speaker 5: some ways like Cam Jordan took me under his wing
- 13:52Speaker 5: and kind of help him along the way. Now he
- 13:55Speaker 5: has to become who he wants to be, and for
- 13:58Speaker 5: him to talk about me like that is special, And
- 14:01Speaker 5: you know, I hope someday you know there's someone that
- 14:05Speaker 5: will look up to him the way you know I
- 14:07Speaker 5: look up to Cam and hopefully he looks up to me.
- 14:09Speaker 5: So you know, that's just continuing the legacy and of
- 14:13Speaker 5: what football is. It's it's not keep all your secrets
- 14:16Speaker 5: and hold them tight to your chest. It's it's a
- 14:18Speaker 5: giving sport. We have a common goal to win. We're
- 14:22Speaker 5: all wearing the same uniform for this season and continuing forward.
- 14:27Speaker 6: It's a special thing.
- 14:28Speaker 5: So that's a tremendous respect for him and he's a
- 14:31Speaker 5: he's a friend for life too.
- 14:33Speaker 1: A follow up to that quote, why no gloves.
- 14:36Speaker 6: It's just a toughness thing.
- 14:37Speaker 5: You know after a while, Like in New Orleans they
- 14:39Speaker 5: got sweaty, and Fau they got sweaty, and you know,
- 14:43Speaker 5: after a while it was like, man, why you know,
- 14:45Speaker 5: so being a part of you know, there's some guys
- 14:48Speaker 5: that don't wear gloves and you always know that those
- 14:50Speaker 5: guys are they got a little something to him.
- 14:53Speaker 1: Final question, and the only contract related question now that
- 14:57Speaker 1: you're playing again, is the bitterness gone? How are you
- 15:01Speaker 1: feeling mentally?
- 15:03Speaker 5: You know, it's one one game in a time mentality,
- 15:05Speaker 5: doing what's best for the twenty twenty five Bengals, and
- 15:08Speaker 5: for that, I will give everything I've got. And you
- 15:11Speaker 5: know it's something that I don't even think about what's uncontrollable.
- 15:15Speaker 6: I can only control what's controllable.
- 15:17Speaker 5: And that's how we handle ourselves in our home and
- 15:20Speaker 5: in our family and how I was raised. So what's
- 15:23Speaker 5: in my control is going out there on Sundays and
- 15:25Speaker 5: giving it my all.
- 15:26Speaker 1: Appreciate you so much, thanks for the time, best of
- 15:28Speaker 1: luck this week.
- 15:28Speaker 6: All right, thank you.
- 15:30Speaker 1: Trey has one of four players credited with eight pressures
- 15:33Speaker 1: in Week one to share the NFL lead. Miles Garrett
- 15:37Speaker 1: had two sacks against the Bengals, but the old line
- 15:40Speaker 1: held him to five pressures. For the second straight year,
- 15:44Speaker 1: the Bengals will open in orange, but in addition to
- 15:47Speaker 1: wearing that color, Zach Taylor has another request for any
- 15:52Speaker 1: of you going to the game.
- 15:53Speaker 7: I know how loud we're going to be, and so
- 15:55Speaker 7: let's do it early. Let's show him right out the gate.
- 15:58Speaker 7: I think when Sam Hubbard is up there is the
- 16:00Speaker 7: ruler of the jungle. Every seat is packed, and I'd
- 16:04Speaker 7: love to look up just for I'm just asking for
- 16:05Speaker 7: one game, a ten minute sacrifice from the parking lot,
- 16:08Speaker 7: and so that that might just mean getting up ten minutes,
- 16:11Speaker 7: ten minutes earlier and getting to the stadium ten minutes
- 16:14Speaker 7: earlier than you normally would. And so do whatever you
- 16:16Speaker 7: want of those extra ten and then that extra ten
- 16:18Speaker 7: getting in the stadium. And so when when Sam's the ruler,
- 16:22Speaker 7: I'm kind of looking up at that escalator that's to
- 16:24Speaker 7: my right, and it's it's like, you know, and maybe
- 16:28Speaker 7: people just appease me and stand at the bottom. So
- 16:29Speaker 7: I can't see as he's up there, but I would
- 16:32Speaker 7: love to hear that just week one. The rest of them,
- 16:35Speaker 7: you can you can tell, get a little extra longer.
- 16:37Speaker 7: But I think for this first one to be awesome,
- 16:39Speaker 7: just to send the message to the team, we got
- 16:40Speaker 7: to do our best to start to to zero. And
- 16:43Speaker 7: for all the great things that we want to do
- 16:44Speaker 7: this year, it starts with playing great at home. And
- 16:47Speaker 7: that's a collective effort from our players, our coaches, our
- 16:51Speaker 7: fan base. And so I'm excited to set off twenty
- 16:53Speaker 7: twenty five the right way at home and Orange were
- 16:57Speaker 7: oranged out, you know, and the gat and I goes
- 17:01Speaker 7: to be fired up.
- 17:01Speaker 1: So finish that last beverige and Burger at your tailgate
- 17:04Speaker 1: lot and be in your seat ready to belt out
- 17:07Speaker 1: the Hooday chant when it's led by my next guest,
- 17:12Speaker 1: The ruler of the Jungle this week proudly wore the
- 17:15Speaker 1: orange and black for his hometown team for seven years.
- 17:17Speaker 1: I am speaking of the Cincinnati kid, Sam Hubbard. Sam,
- 17:22Speaker 1: great to see you. Here's my first question. What did
- 17:25Speaker 1: you do on your first NFL Sunday in retirement?
- 17:29Speaker 8: Dan, Good to see you. Uh yeah, it was a
- 17:32Speaker 8: weird feeling.
- 17:33Speaker 9: I was.
- 17:33Speaker 8: I was out of town. I was on a fishing
- 17:36Speaker 8: trip in Yellowstone, but I was locked in. I was
- 17:39Speaker 8: in the airport, but locked in on my phone watching
- 17:42Speaker 8: the game. Uh play by play it was. I was
- 17:45Speaker 8: glad they game on with the wind. You know, it's
- 17:47Speaker 8: tough to always play in Cleveland again. That win first
- 17:51Speaker 8: week is so huge to set up the season. I
- 17:54Speaker 8: was pumped for him.
- 17:55Speaker 1: I'm sure you're gonna miss game day. But what about
- 17:58Speaker 1: training camp? Did you miscamp up?
- 18:00Speaker 9: Yeah?
- 18:01Speaker 8: You know, I've had August this training camp for the
- 18:03Speaker 8: last I don't even know, fifteen twenty years, and having
- 18:08Speaker 8: that month back to myself was different for sure. I
- 18:11Speaker 8: definitely was doing other activities outside of training camp, but
- 18:16Speaker 8: I definitely missed the you know, the time you spend
- 18:18Speaker 8: with your teammates that August training camp, you really develop
- 18:22Speaker 8: who you're going to be as a team. You kind
- 18:24Speaker 8: of get closer, develop those relationships. And I was texting
- 18:28Speaker 8: some guys seeing what was going on, what was the
- 18:30Speaker 8: latest developments. You know, it's it's fun chatter. And just
- 18:35Speaker 8: felt a little out of the loop, but that's the
- 18:37Speaker 8: natural the way of things.
- 18:39Speaker 1: Well, I am sure you're up to speed on Week
- 18:42Speaker 1: one now. Road wins in the AFC North are prized commodity.
- 18:46Speaker 1: What did you think about Cincinnati's victory in Cleveland.
- 18:50Speaker 8: Yeah, it's huge that, Like you said, those AFC North
- 18:53Speaker 8: winds are massive for setting you up for the postseason.
- 18:57Speaker 8: My career, of the last several years, we've had trouble
- 19:01Speaker 8: winning in Cleveland. It's a tough place to play, the grass,
- 19:04Speaker 8: the crowd, that defense is you know, it's it's a
- 19:09Speaker 8: tough win and I'm glad they pulled it off, setting
- 19:12Speaker 8: themselves up to to be top of the vision and
- 19:15Speaker 8: you know, fight to stay at top it as the
- 19:17Speaker 8: season goes on.
- 19:18Speaker 1: When you win a game like that and you didn't
- 19:21Speaker 1: play your best, are you fine with it. I'm sure
- 19:24Speaker 1: immediately after the victory you are. But as the days
- 19:27Speaker 1: go by, do you still feel good about it?
- 19:30Speaker 8: Well, when you can win those games that are close.
- 19:32Speaker 8: You know, last year we had a lot of those
- 19:34Speaker 8: games and we didn't win them, And that's all that
- 19:37Speaker 8: matters is getting those wins and learning from them. And
- 19:40Speaker 8: I'll tell you, you do a lot better in the
- 19:44Speaker 8: long run winning close games like that and learning from
- 19:47Speaker 8: them than you do, you know, having losing all those.
- 19:51Speaker 8: You know, I'm sure that with the way that they played,
- 19:54Speaker 8: they're very motivated on fixing their mistakes. I know several
- 19:57Speaker 8: guys are, you know, not happy with a one to
- 20:01Speaker 8: oh start with that type of win, So I'm sure
- 20:04Speaker 8: they're building on it and excited about the momentum and
- 20:08Speaker 8: first home game, perfect place to put on their best performance.
- 20:12Speaker 1: One thing they are definitely happy about was the run defense.
- 20:16Speaker 1: In Week one, Cleveland ran it twenty four times, no
- 20:19Speaker 1: runs longer than five yards. They averaged two yards per carry.
- 20:24Speaker 1: How closely does stopping the run like that correlate to victory?
- 20:29Speaker 8: Very closely, especially on the road. You know, I saw
- 20:32Speaker 8: a lot of guys taking on blocks, shedding blocks, block
- 20:36Speaker 8: destruction making tackles usually early in the season. Early in
- 20:41Speaker 8: the weeks, you see a lot of mistackles as people
- 20:44Speaker 8: get back into the swing of things. I think they
- 20:46Speaker 8: did a great job. Obviously, we're working really hard in
- 20:48Speaker 8: camp on tackling, putting an emphasis on it, and it
- 20:51Speaker 8: showed up. And if you can have those fundamentals and
- 20:55Speaker 8: really build your foundation on stopping the run early in
- 20:58Speaker 8: the season, it becomes a standard and I think that
- 21:00Speaker 8: sets them up well. That's a very big positive.
- 21:03Speaker 1: When you went to the Super Bowl in twenty twenty one,
- 21:05Speaker 1: Al Golden was the Bengals linebackers coach. What was your
- 21:08Speaker 1: reaction when he came back to be the DC.
- 21:10Speaker 8: Yeah, I know Il really well. I know how much
- 21:12Speaker 8: he loves football, how intense he is in his preparation.
- 21:16Speaker 8: We always talk about how early he gets there and
- 21:19Speaker 8: all his coffee, and you know how much football means
- 21:23Speaker 8: to him. And I think that resonates to the defense,
- 21:27Speaker 8: especially with these young guys coming from college. You know,
- 21:29Speaker 8: he had experience in college and knows how to develop guys.
- 21:34Speaker 8: And I thought it was a great fit. Knowing Cincinnati,
- 21:36Speaker 8: knowing you know, the coaching staff, a lot of the
- 21:38Speaker 8: players too. I was excited about the fit, and obviously
- 21:43Speaker 8: they're off to a great start.
- 21:45Speaker 1: You and Trey Hendrickson formed a dynamic duo at defensive end.
- 21:49Speaker 1: What do you respect most about Trey?
- 21:52Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 21:52Speaker 8: I have a lot of respect for play obviously, Trey.
- 21:54Speaker 8: Obviously we have grown very close over the years, had
- 21:57Speaker 8: a lot of big moments, a lot of big wins together.
- 22:00Speaker 8: I really respect his intensity, his work ethic. He's one
- 22:04Speaker 8: of the most intense guys you'll find on the football field,
- 22:07Speaker 8: and that translates to his play, and you know, he's
- 22:10Speaker 8: always looking to get better. He texted me after the
- 22:12Speaker 8: game coach me up, and I thought that was funny.
- 22:17Speaker 8: You know, he's had a great forty pass rush win
- 22:21Speaker 8: or something like that, and he was still focused on
- 22:25Speaker 8: you know, he's got to improve, He's got to get better.
- 22:27Speaker 8: So that's just the relentless mindset that I think makes
- 22:29Speaker 8: him great.
- 22:30Speaker 1: Will you coach him up?
- 22:31Speaker 9: Did you watch the tape?
- 22:33Speaker 8: I watched it. I don't know if he needs much
- 22:36Speaker 8: coaching for me, but sometimes it's good for a second
- 22:38Speaker 8: set of eyes just to bounce ideas off of. So
- 22:41Speaker 8: I'm always there for that for anybody.
- 22:44Speaker 1: Sam, you got to know Joe Burrow as an eighteen
- 22:46Speaker 1: year old college freshman, and you two guys have been
- 22:49Speaker 1: fast friends ever since. When did you start to think
- 22:52Speaker 1: that Joe Burrow could be one of the best quarterbacks
- 22:55Speaker 1: to do it?
- 22:57Speaker 8: You know, it's an evolution, I think that. You know,
- 23:00Speaker 8: when the quarterback battle was going on at Ohio State,
- 23:05Speaker 8: it dragged on very long because Joe simply wouldn't allow
- 23:11Speaker 8: a clear decision. He was fighting constantly, you know, making
- 23:16Speaker 8: his case. And you know, Dwayne Haskins was a great
- 23:20Speaker 8: player and came in for the Michigan game the year
- 23:22Speaker 8: before because Joe's hand was broken, and you know, it
- 23:26Speaker 8: kind of set him back, but he fought tooth and
- 23:28Speaker 8: nail and I just earned so much respect for him
- 23:31Speaker 8: during that quarterback battle. And obviously I went to the
- 23:34Speaker 8: NFL and he went to LSUS, so we never got
- 23:36Speaker 8: to play together. But watching him from Afar, you know,
- 23:39Speaker 8: I was campaigning for him to come to the Bengals,
- 23:43Speaker 8: to Zach to Joe, trying to broker that relationship just
- 23:47Speaker 8: as a friend, knowing how much it'd mean to us,
- 23:50Speaker 8: and thankfully it all worked out.
- 23:52Speaker 1: Good recruiting on your part. I remember that National semifinal
- 23:56Speaker 1: game against Oklahoma, where he threw seven touchdown passes in
- 23:59Speaker 1: the first half, and at that point it was likely
- 24:02Speaker 1: that the Bengals were going to have the first pick
- 24:04Speaker 1: in the draft. Were you as excited watching that LSU
- 24:07Speaker 1: Oklahoma game as I was.
- 24:10Speaker 6: No.
- 24:10Speaker 8: I watched every one of his college games with some
- 24:12Speaker 8: of my our Ohio state friends and we just were
- 24:16Speaker 8: you know, in all I like, I think the whole
- 24:19Speaker 8: country was in you know, his performance in big stages,
- 24:24Speaker 8: his growth from his I think his red shirt junior
- 24:26Speaker 8: year to his red shirt senior year, but all throughout
- 24:29Speaker 8: the toughness he showed. I think it took a lot
- 24:32Speaker 8: of people by surprise and gained a lot of Joe
- 24:34Speaker 8: Burrow fans. But we had a close, a close game
- 24:39Speaker 8: to Miami late in that year where we could have
- 24:42Speaker 8: beaten them in double overtime and lost the first pick.
- 24:46Speaker 8: I'm just glad it worked out and we were although
- 24:49Speaker 8: it was a tough year too, you know, in twenty
- 24:52Speaker 8: nineteen to go two and fourteen and paid off getting
- 24:57Speaker 8: that first overall pick to get our.
- 24:59Speaker 1: Guy Sam After you fire up the fans as the
- 25:03Speaker 1: ruler of the jungle. This Sunday, the Bengals will host
- 25:05Speaker 1: the Jacksonville Jaguars, coming off an impressive Week one win
- 25:09Speaker 1: over Carolina. What are some keys to victory for the
- 25:11Speaker 1: Bengals this Sunday.
- 25:13Speaker 8: Yeah, I think it's starting fast, you know. I think
- 25:15Speaker 8: that this crowd is going to be incredible open an Orange.
- 25:19Speaker 8: There's gonna be a lot of excitement, a lot of tailgating.
- 25:21Speaker 8: I'll hopefully provide some juice and energy at the start.
- 25:24Speaker 8: But you know, we've had a lot of home openers
- 25:28Speaker 8: where we didn't start fast. I remember playing Jacksonville Week
- 25:31Speaker 8: four on Thursday night in twenty twenty one and we're
- 25:34Speaker 8: down fourteen to nothing at half, and that just makes
- 25:37Speaker 8: it harder. But if you can get that lead early,
- 25:40Speaker 8: get the crowd behind you, get that crowd noise going,
- 25:42Speaker 8: start getting those pass rushers to get a good get off.
- 25:47Speaker 8: With that silent count and a little chaos, I think
- 25:50Speaker 8: they can really establish a strong foundation to winning at home.
- 25:55Speaker 8: That can be the key to getting where they want
- 25:57Speaker 8: to be at the end of the year. So I
- 25:58Speaker 8: think it's just starting fast and not letting any adversity
- 26:02Speaker 8: that arises that will for sure arise shake these new
- 26:06Speaker 8: players and it'll be fun to watch.
- 26:09Speaker 1: You're doing phenomenal work in the community with the Sam
- 26:12Speaker 1: Hubbard Foundation. What do you have going on this time
- 26:15Speaker 1: of year and how can people help?
- 26:17Speaker 8: Yeah, this time of year, schools back in session. Our
- 26:20Speaker 8: main program, Hubbard's Cupboards, is grown by fifteen schools this year.
- 26:26Speaker 8: This school year that just started, We're in thirty six
- 26:28Speaker 8: local schools providing resources for confidence and school supplies, high
- 26:34Speaker 8: gene items, healthy snacks and if you're interested in learning more,
- 26:38Speaker 8: check it out on our website Sam Hubbard Foundation dot com.
- 26:42Speaker 8: And I'm excited to be still in this community here
- 26:44Speaker 8: in Cincinnati doing things like this and staying involved.
- 26:49Speaker 1: We are excited to see you on the stage as
- 26:51Speaker 1: the Ruler of the Jungle this Sunday. I appreciate your
- 26:54Speaker 1: time and enjoy the season as a fan for the
- 26:57Speaker 1: first time in a long time.
- 26:58Speaker 8: Thanks Dan, always a pleasure see you there.
- 27:02Speaker 1: Sam gave us some keys to victory. The Bengals are
- 27:04Speaker 1: favored by three and a half. The Bengals Booth podcast
- 27:08Speaker 1: is brought to you by pay Corps, proud to be

- 27:23Speaker 1: official healthcare provider of the Bengals. Now time for this
- 27:28Speaker 1: week's Know the Faux segment. After a dreadful season that
- 27:32Speaker 1: ended with a four and thirteen record, the Jacksonville Jaguars
- 27:35Speaker 1: cleaned house, firing their GM and head coach. The new
- 27:39Speaker 1: GM is thirty five year old James Gladstone, the youngest
- 27:43Speaker 1: GM in the NFL. The new head coach is thirty
- 27:46Speaker 1: nine year old Liam Cohen, among the five youngest head
- 27:49Speaker 1: coaches in the NFL, and the team's new vice president
- 27:52Speaker 1: of football Operations is Hall of Fame offensive lineman Tony Bisselli.
- 27:58Speaker 1: The new trio is off to a good start after
- 28:00Speaker 1: a twenty six to ten Week one win over Carolina.
- 28:04Speaker 1: Frank Frangie is the voice of the Jaguars and joined
- 28:08Speaker 1: Dave Lapham and me this week on the Bengals Game
- 28:10Speaker 1: Plan Show.
- 28:12Speaker 3: It's been a tough go around here, as you guys know,
- 28:15Speaker 3: and it was a good start, and even in the
- 28:17Speaker 3: offseason it felt like it might be that way. Tony
- 28:20Speaker 3: Bucelli is running things around here now. The new regime
- 28:24Speaker 3: seems to be all pulling in the same direction, which
- 28:27Speaker 3: we haven't maybe always had. So yeah, it was a
- 28:29Speaker 3: good start. It was just it was one game, but
- 28:32Speaker 3: I think it felt pretty good around here. I think
- 28:33Speaker 3: your assessment's dead.
- 28:34Speaker 4: On what did the Jaguars do best? In your opinion
- 28:39Speaker 4: when you were watching the game live, What did they
- 28:43Speaker 4: do that kind of made you perk up in the
- 28:46Speaker 4: in your in the broadcast booth and take notice, or
- 28:50Speaker 4: after the game when you had time to look at
- 28:52Speaker 4: it again in review tape of it, what might have
- 28:55Speaker 4: jumped out at you?
- 28:57Speaker 3: Okay, But I think the main thing is they said
- 29:00Speaker 3: they were going to run the ball, and they said
- 29:02Speaker 3: they were going to be a physical So, you know, we.
- 29:03Speaker 9: Have a new regime.
- 29:04Speaker 3: You never really know, right, you know, you have an
- 29:07Speaker 3: idea what they want to be and what they hope
- 29:09Speaker 3: they'll be. But Liam Cohen ran the ball as the
- 29:12Speaker 3: coordinator in Tampa last year, and I think one of
- 29:14Speaker 3: the things that helped him really sort of unlock some
- 29:16Speaker 3: things in Baker Mayfield is he got Bucky Irving in
- 29:19Speaker 3: that running game going, and I think that's one of
- 29:21Speaker 3: the things that made him attractive to Jacksonville. Well, he
- 29:23Speaker 3: got here and they said, listen, we're going to run
- 29:25Speaker 3: the football.
- 29:26Speaker 9: We're going to we have to be a physical football team.
- 29:28Speaker 9: And they did that.
- 29:29Speaker 3: They stuck to the run. They ran for two hundred yards.
- 29:31Speaker 3: You know, the running the teams that are committed to
- 29:33Speaker 3: the run. Everybody could run on first and ten, but
- 29:36Speaker 3: he's still willing to run on second and nine, right
- 29:38Speaker 3: or second and eight. And I think they were so.
- 29:40Speaker 3: I think the commitment to the run traves ETN had
- 29:43Speaker 3: the big game rushing. The team rushed for two hundred yards.
- 29:47Speaker 3: They were more physical than this team's been in a while.
- 29:49Speaker 3: I think there's one thing that jumped off the page
- 29:52Speaker 3: and I think we were all kind of excited about
- 29:54Speaker 3: is they said they were going to run the football and.
- 29:55Speaker 9: They did right.
- 29:57Speaker 1: My son is a student at the University of Colorado,
- 30:00Speaker 1: so I watched a lot of Travis Hunter last year
- 30:03Speaker 1: and it was an amazing show on both sides of
- 30:06Speaker 1: the ball. In Week one, most the offense, just a
- 30:09Speaker 1: few snaps on defense. I heard that Liam Cohen apparently
- 30:12Speaker 1: said earlier today he'll play more defense this week. How
- 30:17Speaker 1: has he looked, I mean, has he been as impressive
- 30:20Speaker 1: on the practice field as he was for the Buffaloes
- 30:23Speaker 1: last year.
- 30:24Speaker 9: You know, damn.
- 30:25Speaker 3: The thing is he's never tired wherever.
- 30:27Speaker 9: I don't even where he is right now, but wherever
- 30:28Speaker 9: he is, he's not tired.
- 30:29Speaker 3: I'll tell you that right now.
- 30:30Speaker 9: He's never tired.
- 30:32Speaker 3: That's the amazing thing about him. And I'll say this, Yeah,
- 30:36Speaker 3: he's look good in practice. He's got to learn the offense.
- 30:38Speaker 3: He's got to learn defense. But he can play all
- 30:41Speaker 3: day long. And if your son watched him, you probably
- 30:43Speaker 3: watched him.
- 30:43Speaker 9: You know this.
- 30:44Speaker 3: He's got the endurance. What he's got to do is
- 30:47Speaker 3: learn the offense and the defense. Last week he played
- 30:50Speaker 3: forty two plays on offense and six on defense. I
- 30:53Speaker 3: think this week the plan is to play more on defensive.
- 30:55Speaker 3: Liam said for a couple of reasons. Number one, he
- 30:57Speaker 3: got the first game under his belt. Right now, he's
- 31:00Speaker 3: got the feel of playing on both sides of the
- 31:01Speaker 3: ball and knowing both game plans. And he did that
- 31:04Speaker 3: one time, so this will be the second time he's
- 31:06Speaker 3: done that.
- 31:06Speaker 9: The other thing is.
- 31:07Speaker 3: He's playing Joe Burrow. Okay, with all apologies to Bryce Young,
- 31:11Speaker 3: this week, he's playing Joe Burrow. When he's playing those
- 31:13Speaker 3: receivers so I think it's all hands on deck. Defensively,
- 31:16Speaker 3: I don't know that it's going to be. Let's say
- 31:19Speaker 3: there's sixty offensive plays and sixty defense. I don't know
- 31:22Speaker 3: that he's going to play forty and forty, but I'll
- 31:25Speaker 3: bet you he plays twenty to twenty five on defense,
- 31:28Speaker 3: would be my guest this week, and forty or so
- 31:31Speaker 3: on offense. If I was guessing, I think that's where
- 31:33Speaker 3: it would be.
- 31:33Speaker 9: But yeah, he's been very impressive.
- 31:35Speaker 3: He's a great kid, hard worker, gained the respect of
- 31:38Speaker 3: his teammates really right out of the gate, and he's
- 31:41Speaker 3: going to be some player.
- 31:42Speaker 9: He really is.
- 31:43Speaker 4: What other players on the Jacksonville Jaguars have impressed you.
- 31:49Speaker 3: I would say Travis Etn had the big game. You know,
- 31:52Speaker 3: people have been trying to chase off TRAVIS'STN forever. Right,
- 31:55Speaker 3: He's the first round draft pick. He was just okay
- 31:58Speaker 3: for some of those years, so they thought, I think
- 32:00Speaker 3: Bigsby might beat him out. He's more of a downhill runner.
- 32:02Speaker 3: Then they drafted to running backs, they drafted Basil Tutons,
- 32:05Speaker 3: they drafted le Quinn Allen, and everybody thought Travis might
- 32:09Speaker 3: be say everybody, many thought Travis might be the forgotten man. Well,
- 32:12Speaker 3: he took that personally.
- 32:13Speaker 9: He said, okay, okay's still my job.
- 32:15Speaker 3: And he had the big game one hundred and forty
- 32:17Speaker 3: plus last week, so he certainly looked good. And I
- 32:20Speaker 3: think one of the reasons is they blocked. They brought
- 32:22Speaker 3: in Robert Hainsey to be their center. He's a physical player.
- 32:25Speaker 3: They brought in Patrick McCarey from the Ravens to be
- 32:27Speaker 3: the right guard.
- 32:27Speaker 9: He's a physical player. Ezra Cleveland, the left guard.
- 32:30Speaker 3: Was always athletics, but I thought he had a little
- 32:32Speaker 3: more lead in his rear end this time than I've
- 32:35Speaker 3: seen in the past. So the running game Travis CTN
- 32:37Speaker 3: stood out. And I'll say this, Foyer Lucan had a
- 32:40Speaker 3: great game. He was kind of playing out of position.
- 32:42Speaker 3: He's always led the team in tackles. He's often led
- 32:45Speaker 3: the league at tackles.
- 32:46Speaker 9: Last year they moved him to from the mic to.
- 32:48Speaker 3: The will because they thought he'd played space better, and
- 32:50Speaker 3: it was a mistake. He's back at the mike linebacker spot.
- 32:53Speaker 9: He was the player.
- 32:53Speaker 3: He was the AFC Player of the Week defensively this week,
- 32:56Speaker 3: and he earned that with ten tackles and a diving interception.
- 33:00Speaker 9: I would say a Lucon.
- 33:01Speaker 3: On the defensive side the middle linebacker, and travisse Etn
- 33:04Speaker 3: on the offensive side who had a really big game.
- 33:07Speaker 3: Those two guys are attorneyes that were real pleased with
- 33:10Speaker 3: how they played.
- 33:13Speaker 1: There are a lot of high draft picks on the
- 33:14Speaker 1: defensive line. Frank the number one overall pick from a
- 33:17Speaker 1: few years back, Trayvon Walker the seventh pick in the
- 33:20Speaker 1: draft not too long ago, Josh heinz Allen many years ago,
- 33:24Speaker 1: Eric Armstead was the seventeenth pick in the draft. Remains
- 33:27Speaker 1: a giant up front. How good is that group? Because
- 33:31Speaker 1: the Cleveland Browns front gave Cincinnati a lot of trouble last.
- 33:34Speaker 9: Week and the ends are very good.
- 33:37Speaker 3: I would say that Josh heines Allen and Trayvon Walker
- 33:40Speaker 3: are going to continue to be good players.
- 33:42Speaker 9: Two years ago, Josh.
- 33:43Speaker 3: Had seventeen and a half sacks and Trayvon had ten.
- 33:47Speaker 3: Last year, Treyvon had ten. Josh didnt that as good
- 33:49Speaker 3: a year, but the ends are good.
- 33:50Speaker 9: They're good there.
- 33:52Speaker 3: Duan smooth Is the backup end, had two sacks last
- 33:54Speaker 3: week or a sacond and a half. They went and
- 33:56Speaker 3: got Emmanuel ogg go to be a backup end, so
- 33:58Speaker 3: I think they're okay outside. I would say that the
- 34:01Speaker 3: jury is still out on the tackles. Eric Armistead did
- 34:04Speaker 3: not practice much. He was hurt too much a camp
- 34:06Speaker 3: played last week. I'm not sure he played, made a
- 34:09Speaker 3: lot of splash plays. De Von Hamilton, the nose guard,
- 34:11Speaker 3: played okay last week. They added two guys, Austin Johnson
- 34:15Speaker 3: from Buffalo and Colin Saunders from from New Orleans. I
- 34:18Speaker 3: think they're just okay at tackle. I think if you
- 34:21Speaker 3: if you try to identify a concern on the football
- 34:23Speaker 3: team going into the season coming out of camp, it
- 34:26Speaker 3: would be defensive tackle. I'm not sure they fixed that.
- 34:29Speaker 3: It'll be interesting to see. So I think the ends
- 34:31Speaker 3: are pretty good and and I think they like where
- 34:33Speaker 3: they are with their ends. They'd probably like to see
- 34:35Speaker 3: the tackles flash a little bit more. I think I would,
- 34:39Speaker 3: And I think that's probably where they are as well.
- 34:42Speaker 4: How how big a focus is ball security with the
- 34:46Speaker 4: coaching staff during the course of practice.
- 34:50Speaker 3: Yeah, well, I'll tell you this. Any team that runs
- 34:53Speaker 3: the ball and it's sound like a broken record here,
- 34:55Speaker 3: guys that I apologize, but we haven't done that around here,
- 34:58Speaker 3: right any team it's that committed to running the ball.
- 35:02Speaker 3: Better take care of the ball. You know, if you
- 35:04Speaker 3: think if you're a running team, the game's going to
- 35:07Speaker 3: be a little shorter, right, You're not as likely to
- 35:09Speaker 3: come from behind, And I think you better care of
- 35:12Speaker 3: the ball.
- 35:12Speaker 8: Now.
- 35:13Speaker 9: Again, they've played one game.
- 35:14Speaker 3: That doesn't mean Trevor won't throw it forty five times
- 35:16Speaker 3: on Sunday in Cincinnati. But I think that's who they
- 35:19Speaker 3: want to be. You always want to establish your identity,
- 35:22Speaker 3: and I think that's who they want to be. So
- 35:23Speaker 3: they've got to take care of the ball, and Trevor's
- 35:25Speaker 3: got to take better care of the ball. He would
- 35:26Speaker 3: tell you that Trevor's got to. Trevor Lawrence is a
- 35:29Speaker 3: really good kid and he's going to be a very
- 35:31Speaker 3: good player in this league. There's no doubt in my mind.
- 35:33Speaker 3: I think he's made progress, but the one thing he's
- 35:35Speaker 3: got to do is take care of the ball. I
- 35:36Speaker 3: think Trevor was so successful in college sticking balls in
- 35:40Speaker 3: there where you probably shouldn't have been able to. But
- 35:42Speaker 3: his receivers were so good and his arm is so
- 35:45Speaker 3: good that he got some balls in it and.
- 35:47Speaker 9: Maybe you shouldn't. You shouldn't have been able to write.
- 35:49Speaker 3: And you have to learn and you get in this
- 35:51Speaker 3: league and didn't like that. You get in this league.
- 35:53Speaker 3: That cornerback from wake Forest who couldn't quite get there
- 35:56Speaker 3: is now a cornerback from the Denver Broncos who's going
- 35:58Speaker 3: to get there right. And I think that he had
- 36:01Speaker 3: to learn that and I think he's starting to. So, Yes,
- 36:04Speaker 3: small security is a big deal. Turnovers or the kiss
- 36:08Speaker 3: of dead. By the way, we were the worst team
- 36:10Speaker 3: in the league last year in takeaways. The Jagguars had
- 36:13Speaker 3: nine takeaways all last year. The defense got them nine
- 36:17Speaker 3: turnovers all last year. They harready got three in the
- 36:19Speaker 3: first game. They had three takeaways for a team that's
- 36:22Speaker 3: a third of what they did in the entire season.
- 36:24Speaker 9: So that's certainly a point of emphasis with his defense
- 36:26Speaker 9: as well.
- 36:28Speaker 1: Three years ago, Jacksonville made the playoffs and won a
- 36:31Speaker 1: playoff game, one of the great comebacks in football history,
- 36:34Speaker 1: twenty seven zip to beat the Chargers. They still had
- 36:37Speaker 1: a winning record the following year and Trevor Lawrence got
- 36:40Speaker 1: hurt late in the season or they might have made
- 36:42Speaker 1: the playoffs again. And then last year the bottom fell
- 36:45Speaker 1: out for whatever reason. Four wins all year. What happened.
- 36:48Speaker 1: Why did they fall off that coup last year?
- 36:51Speaker 9: Boy, then that is the question.
- 36:53Speaker 3: I'm still horse from that comeback three years ago, so
- 36:55Speaker 3: I remember it well. One of the fun moments we've
- 36:59Speaker 3: all had around here.
- 37:00Speaker 9: You know what the question you just asked is is.
- 37:03Speaker 3: The bizarre one? They had the really good year under
- 37:06Speaker 3: Doug Peterson his first year here the playoffs, They won
- 37:09Speaker 3: the playoff game, they went they may be Elite eight
- 37:11Speaker 3: if you will, of the NFL, and then lost to
- 37:13Speaker 3: obviously a very good Chiefs team.
- 37:15Speaker 9: And they were very good that year.
- 37:16Speaker 3: The next year they started eight and three and it
- 37:18Speaker 3: looked like they were It looked like they were pretty good. Now,
- 37:21Speaker 3: if you remember the game against the Bengals here, Christian
- 37:24Speaker 3: Kirk got hurt. Okay, in that game when he got her.
- 37:27Speaker 3: There were eight and three at the time, and that's
- 37:29Speaker 3: the game he got hurt, and that started the spiral down.
- 37:33Speaker 9: Man.
- 37:33Speaker 3: They finished one in five. One in five started with
- 37:36Speaker 3: that game against the Bengals and never picked up the pieces.
- 37:39Speaker 3: I thought last year they kind of would resurrect that,
- 37:43Speaker 3: but they just never got it going. Doug Peterson's a
- 37:45Speaker 3: wonderful man. I think he's a very good football coach,
- 37:47Speaker 3: but I'm not sure he and the in the GM
- 37:49Speaker 3: were pulling in the same direction. The more you lose,
- 37:52Speaker 3: the more confidence you lose. And you know that defensively
- 37:55Speaker 3: they weren't very good. They brought in a new coordinator,
- 37:57Speaker 3: Ryan Neilson last year, and it was a disaster defensively,
- 38:01Speaker 3: so the offense was playing catchup all the time. It
- 38:03Speaker 3: hard to run the ball when you're down seventeen to
- 38:05Speaker 3: six in the second quarter, and that was kind of
- 38:08Speaker 3: the season they had. So yeah, it was I'm not
- 38:11Speaker 3: sure everything that happened, Dan, but it.
- 38:12Speaker 9: Was a hard year.
- 38:13Speaker 3: Man. It was a hard year, and that's why sometimes
- 38:16Speaker 3: we have those. That's why you have all the changes.
- 38:18Speaker 3: They had the changes, and I think that's why there's
- 38:20Speaker 3: so much positivity now because they are all pulling in
- 38:23Speaker 3: the same direction and they all seem to be of
- 38:25Speaker 3: a similar mind, and I think they're excited about where
- 38:27Speaker 3: they are.
- 38:28Speaker 9: I really believe that.
