- 0:18Just when you thought that Elon Musk couldn't shock you anymore,
- 0:23Tesla has just locked in a major chip deal with Samsung, which
- 0:28deepens Elon Musk's effort to reshape his companies around AI
- 0:33as opposed to Tesla vehicles. Now they signed a new contract
- 0:37with Samsung for next Gen. chips.
- 0:39According to multiple reports and also confirmed by Samsung in
- 0:43a public statement, this is the first time that Tesla has
- 0:46publicly committed to a major external chip supplier for
- 0:50upcoming AI and autonomous driving hardware.
- 0:53So why is Tesla turning to Samsung for chips though?
- 0:57Because Elon Musk says he's in founder mode again, and he's
- 1:00directing his energy toward what he views as Tesla's next crucial
- 1:04phase, transforming it into a dominant force in AI.
- 1:09Tesla has relied mostly on its in house Full Self driving
- 1:13hardware, but this new deal indicates the company needs more
- 1:16specialized silicon to keep pace with its software rivals.
- 1:21Now, Samsung confirmed it will manufacture Tesla's new chips
- 1:25using its four nanometer fabrication process, which is
- 1:28one of the most advanced in the world.
- 1:29Samsung's 4 nanometer tech allows for higher transistor
- 1:33density, better power efficiency and improved performance.
- 1:38Now, the chips will be billed at Samsung's factory in South
- 1:40Korea, and Samsung said the chips are part of Tesla's
- 1:43Hardware HW-5 Hardware 5 platform, the next generation
- 1:49after the currently shipping HW-4.
- 1:51The powers Tesla's latest Autopilot and FSD systems.
- 1:55Now, Tesla hasn't provided a timeline for when HW-5 will
- 2:00launch, but internal documents show that it is being designed
- 2:04to handle larger AI workloads needed for Tesla's Robotaxi
- 2:08platform and Optimus humanoid robot.
- 2:11By tapping Samsung's chip making division, Tesla will also bypass
- 2:16the oncoming backlog faced by TSMC, the world's leading chip
- 2:20manufacturer, which handles contracts for Apple, NVIDIA, and
- 2:24AMD. Now, Musk has publicly expressed
- 2:27frustration with Nvidia's supply chain, specifically calling out
- 2:30the limited availability of each 100 GPU's.
- 2:33While Tesla uses NVIDIA hardware in his Dojo supercomputing
- 2:36projects, the custom chips from Samsung will give Tesla more
- 2:40control over its FSD road map. This aligns with Musk's recent
- 2:45pivot to centralized Tesla's AI stack around vertically
- 2:49integrated technology. Now, Samsung stock rose nearly
- 2:535% on news of the Tesla contract, making it one of the
- 2:56best performers in South Korea's Kospi index on Monday.
- 3:00Investors viewed the deal as validation of Samsung's
- 3:03aggressive mood into foundry services work, a piece directly
- 3:07with TSFC. Now.
- 3:08Samsung has struggled to win high profile contracts outside
- 3:12of mobile and consumer electronics, and Tesla offers
- 3:15the company a powerful new customer and AI now.
- 3:19Elon's decision to secure external chip supply also shows
- 3:23that Tesla's growing hardware needs.
- 3:25Then it shifts from cars to infrastructure and AI.
- 3:29In recent months, Tesla has scaled up his Dojo
- 3:31supercomputer, which processes massive data sets for FSD
- 3:35training. Tesla said last year it planned
- 3:38to spend more than a billion dollars on Dojo, with much of
- 3:42the budget going toward custom chips and data centers.
- 3:45And while Tesla has long claimed it leads in the AI race through
- 3:49software, its hardware has been pretty laggy behind NVIDIA and
- 3:54AMD, whose chips dominate training workloads in data
- 3:58centers. A Tesla's new chips will not
- 4:00replace Nvidia's for general AI training, but they will be
- 4:04optimized for inference tasks inside vehicles and robots or
- 4:08power efficiency and latency matter more than raw compute.
- 4:14Samsung the Samsung deal said the contract covers a multi year
- 4:20supply agreement and the Samsung has already begun very early
- 4:24production of these chips and they're expected to be taped out
- 4:26later this year, meaning they're nearing final design and ready
- 4:29for mass production. Tesla could begin integrating
- 4:32the new hardware into vehicles sometime in 2026.
- 4:36The early prototypes may appear sooner for testing.
- 4:39Samsung's manufacturing process at 4 nanometers has seen several
- 4:43improvements in yield, according to internal metrics reported by
- 4:46the company earlier this year. These improvements helped
- 4:49convince Tesla the Samsung's process has become competitive
- 4:53with TSMCS, and Tesla's chip design team will still control
- 4:58the chip architecture, while Samsung will acts as a foundry.
- 5:03Tesla's pivot to more complex chip design also places it more
- 5:07directly in competition with other AI firms, many of which
- 5:10already designed their own ASICS chips.
- 5:12That's application specific integrated circuits for machine
- 5:15learning. Google has tensor processing
- 5:18units or Tpus, and Amazon uses custom Tranium chips.
- 5:23Tesla now joins that group with the Samsung manufactured HW-5.
- 5:28Now the chip deal gives Samsung a major foothold in automotive
- 5:32semiconductors market it has sought to enter more deeply over
- 5:36the past decade. Most of Samsung's revenue has
- 5:39historically come from memory chips and mobile processors, but
- 5:41the company has increased investment in AI hardware and
- 5:46auto components. Working with Tesla provides the
- 5:48scale and the visibility to build momentum in both areas.
- 5:54Now, Tesla remains very secretive about HW-5.
- 5:58We don't know any specifications, but there is
- 6:01some documents floating around. They've been obtained by supply
- 6:04chain analysts and it suggests that the chip will support
- 6:08faster neural network processing, real time
- 6:11environmental modelling and also improved compute per Watt for
- 6:16onboard systems. Now these enhancements are
- 6:18critical for any future roll out of fully autonomous vehicles,
- 6:23which Musk continues to promise despite years of delays.
- 6:30Now this contract doesn't guarantee the Tesla will launch
- 6:33robo taxi or Optimus at a large scale anytime soon, but it
- 6:38removes a major hardware bottleneck.
- 6:41Tesla now has a dedicated source for high end chips, reducing its
- 6:45reliant on over stretched GPU vendors and giving it more
- 6:49control over its product timeline.
